This week... Here we are in May already, five months into 2021! How have you been travelling, dear readers? When the welcome rain arrived on Monday evening, I was reminded it had been a while since Canberra had been so damp. In fact, after our rainy summer, April turned out to be quite parched with only 1.4mm falling in the gauge all month long. The downside of rainy days in Canberra is that many road users seem to forget how to drive in the wet; tailgating, speeding and changing lanes without indicating become even more perilous. And adding to traffic volumes, numerous people who might normally use active or public transport revert to using private vehicles, understandably. So please everyone, take more care, take a little more time, and stay safe. Reasons to be grateful this past week include complimentary dinner with a friend at the new Meat & Wine Co restaurant at Constitution Place near Canberra Theatre, an uplifting night of catch-ups, fundraising and acknowledging the extraordinary work of Lifeline Canberra at the charity’s gala on Friday with Shannon Noll in fine voice, visiting the very popular Esty Made Local markets at EPIC on Saturday, watching Oscar-winning film The Father with a friend, full house at The Twins at the Courtyard Theatre on a rainy Monday night, and long weekend walks in glorious autumn weather. Bliss. - Julie Samaras

news Local solar companies say the premature announcement of the ACT Government’s solar loans scheme has left them struggling to survive. In January, the ACT Government announced the $150 million Sustainable Household Scheme would provide zero-interest loans of $2,000 to $15,000 for rooftop solar panels, household battery storage, zero emissions vehicles, and energy-efficient electric appliances – part of the government’s plan to make the ACT (the first 100% renewable energy city outside Europe) emissions free by 2045. A spokesperson said the Government intended to open the Scheme by the end of June, and expand it to all eligible Canberra households in the first quarter of next financial year (July–September 2021), six to eight months after it was first announced. Although the Scheme was designed to encourage Canberrans to buy solar, local companies say business has plummeted. Canberrans, it seems, want solar; but they don’t want to pay for it themselves if they don’t have to. “Nobody is buying; they’re waiting for the grant to be released,” Sumandeep Dhillon, of Capital Solar Energy, said. Bin Wang, of Mondiaux Solar, said the business has gone down dramatically to 40% compared with last year.
Mafiz Uddin, of Canberra Solar Shine, estimates sales have dropped 70 to 75%. His company used to install 15 jobs a week; now, hardly four or five. Sales might have fallen, but running costs remain the same. The companies still have to keep their employees on the books and pay overheads. The three businesses consider the Scheme itself an excellent initiative, but Mr Dhillon said “the only problem is they released the information too early”. Mr Dhillon and Mr Wang want the government to speed up the process. Mr Uddin thinks this is unlikely but wants an end to the uncertainty. If the government said the Scheme would start on a certain date, businesses would be able to plan ahead. “But we don’t know anything. There is no particular time. There is no particular deadline.” In the meantime, Mr Uddin suggested, the government should give interest-free loans to companies. “So at least we can survive, we can keep paying the rent, keep paying insurance.” The ACT businesses also want the government to give preference to local (including Queanbeyan) companies that have been in business for at least a year, to prevent Sydney or Melbourne companies muscling in. Mr Dhillon suggested that as with light rail, only companies with a Secure Local Jobs Code should be

able to tender. He said this would benefit the local economy; every house in the ACT will need solar to meet the government’s 100% renewable energy target. In a general statement, the ACT Government said it was consulting the solar industry to ensure checks and balances were in place; the industry had been involved throughout the design of the Scheme, and feedback had been hugely positive. - Nick Fuller
‘Gone ballistic’: ACT median house price exceeds $900k ACT house prices have continued to soar, reaching a record-high median of more than $900,000. According to figures from Domain released last week, prices increased 9.7% over the March quarter with the ACT’s median house price now sitting at $927,577 – an increase of almost 20% on last year. And while it’s “unlikely”, another quarter at the same growth rate could push the Territory’s median to more than $1 million. “Canberra’s auction clearance rate soared to 89% in March, the highest point on record,” said Domain’s senior research analyst, Dr Nicola Powell. “It has been above 80% for two months in a row, highlighting the market fierceness.” Local real estate agency principal, Michael Potter, said the “sizzling hot” market was the busiest he’s ever seen it in more than 20 years in the industry. Mr Potter put the ACT’s growth down to a culmination of factors including low stock, low interest rates and high employment rates, as well as the return of expats from overseas due to COVID-19. “Our prices here have just gone ballistic,” he 4

said. “The buyers are getting frustrated, the market is frustrated, because there’s no stock. “Is it going to slow down? I don’t know.” Dr Powell said the strongest gains over the quarter were in North Canberra, South Canberra and Woden Valley – areas which already have a median house price of more than $1 million. “A higher average wage, job security and low mortgage rates have spurred buyers to upsize.”
First home buyers feeling the pinch Mr Potter said first home buyers, in particular, were feeling the brunt of increased growth, finding themselves priced out of the market, unable to compete with wealthier older buyers and investors. That’s something prospective first home buyer Brenton can relate to. He has been looking in the Tuggeranong and Woden Valley areas, and said the process was “stressful, trying and frustrating”. “Prices have risen approximately 10% in the six months I’ve been looking. Prices have skyrocketed from 1 January 2021 especially,” he said.
Brenton said current prices were “extremely unsustainable” for first home buyers trying to crack into the market. He said projected market growth, low wage increases and the inevitable increase to interest rates, given they’re at an all-time low, only added to the stress and meant ownership was unlikely for a number of young Canberrans. Mr Potter said some buyers were turning to apartments and townhouses – “they’ve got no choice” – but even then were faced with stiff competition at auction. “I’ve never ever seen apartments, onebedroom apartments, getting auctioned … it’s unprecedented.” Unit prices declined 5% over the quarter but were still up nearly 3% on March 2020 values, with the median currently at $473,304. “It has been a consistent Canberra trend, units providing more subtle growth compared to houses,” said Dr Powell. “The unit market is not uniform across the Territory, with apartments in Gungahlin, South Canberra and Tuggeranong growing over the quarter and year.” - Libby Kimber
political capital WITH GARY HUMPHRIES AO, FORMER ACT CHIEF MINISTER AND ACT SENATOR
ACT prison designed to fail After Health, the Corrections portfolio would have to be the biggest poisoned chalice a minister could be given in this Territory. The bad news just keeps on coming. Documents released under Freedom of Information recently show the present gaol is too small for the population the experts had forecast for it. A riot there last year cost the taxpayer $5.7 million in repairs. Prisoners complain they have nothing to do all day. Little wonder that former Chief Minister Jon Stanhope, who established the facility, labelled it “an appalling failure” last month. To be fair, his original vision of the nation’s first human rights-compliant gaol was both noble and achievable. However, he bears some of the blame for its subsequent failure because of the flaws he himself built into its design. At the outset, Stanhope ruled out a gaol run by the private sector. Now we all know, courtesy of countless American movies set in private prisons, that such places are hellholes where inmates are abused in the name of profit. But in real life, the story is somewhat different.
Nearly 20% of Australian prisoners are presently housed in privately-run facilities. In fact, Australia has the highest rate of private incarceration in the world. Many of these prisons have been operating for more than two decades. They have been retained – including by Labor state governments, which opposed them when in opposition – for simple reasons: they are cost-effective and they work. One reason they work is the profit motive. Prisons with restless, unhappy inmates are expensive, because staffing levels must stay high to deal with riots and the like. Prisons where populations are busy and engaged, where tensions between guards and prisoners are reduced, are cheaper to run. Private operators understand this well. The other reason they work is because, counterintuitively, governments have more control over what occurs in private gaols. Governments can (and do) stipulate performance targets in contracts with private operators. There is no equivalent mechanism in publicly-run gaols. Prison officer unions are more powerful in publicly-run gaols, and they are generally not allies
in the process of reform. The ACT Government learnt this lesson when it tried to introduce a needle exchange program but was stymied by the prison officers union. Given this background, and the fact that the ACT had never run a gaol before 2008, the odds were solidly stacked against the Alexander Maconochie Centre ever achieving the ambitious goals Stanhope set for it. Unsurprisingly, the rate of incarceration has jumped dramatically since the prison was built: another lost opportunity. With more effective levers of control at its disposal, the ACT Government should actually have been able to reduce incarceration rates by trialling alternatives to imprisonment and using the gaol only as the option of last resort. Again, the undynamic and unresponsive model it chose made that approach very difficult. Despite these many problems, we are still better off housing our own prisoners than transporting them to NSW. But only just.

news Check your heart this Heart Week Almost 10 years ago, Canberra local Glen Farrant thought he had only pulled a muscle as his chest began to ache. He had spent hours doing heavy lifting and, at midnight, after a shower, first noticed the pain. Within minutes, the pain began to escalate until he felt like a heavy weight was sitting on his chest and like he was going to vomit. Then 52 years old, Mr Farrant was later told he was lucky to survive his heart attack. “I knew something was wrong,” he said. “Alison (his wife) rang the ambulance … It took about an hour from my first symptoms until I was in intensive care with a stent in.” He said it was lucky his wife Alison immediately thought of her father, who had died of a heart attack aged 39, and recognised the symptoms. Mr Farrant was told by hospital staff if he had waited any longer to go to hospital, his own experience would have been “more serious”.

Prior to his heart attack in 2011, he had never had a heart check, and was shocked to learn heart attacks are responsible for causing almost one in 20 deaths in Australia. “As I was going into hospital, I was wondering whether this was the end. My father died of a heart attack, Alison’s father died of a heart attack, I thought it was my number up,” he said. According to the Heart Foundation, onefifth of Australians aged 45-74 years have a high chance of having a heart attack or stroke in the next five years. While deaths from heart attacks have been decreasing over time, researchers are concerned that following the COVID-19 pandemic, people are not undertaking preventative health assessments such as Heart Health Checks. This Heart Week, 3-9 May, the Heart Foundation has a focus on supporting health professionals to deliver more Heart Health Checks to eligible patients.

news National push for minimum rental standards More than 50 organisations have called on state and territory governments around the country to implement minimum energy efficiency standards for rental properties. According to Better Renting’s executive director Joel Dignam, inefficient homes present a “dire” situation for a number of renters in the ACT, given the Territory’s weather extremes. Mr Dignam said minimum standards would look different in each state and territory depending on conditions, but in the ACT could include things
like ceiling insultation, stopping draughts, and a fixed, energyefficient heater. “What we’d like to see is the basic stuff that just make a home fit to live in,” Mr Dignam said. The ACT Government committed to minimum standards in the Labor-Greens Parliamentary Agreement, and Energy Minister Shane Rattenbury said some regulations would be in place by the end of the year. - Libby Kimber For more on this story, visit canberraweekly.com.au
Police target dangerous driving Throughout May, ACT Policing are focusing efforts on addressing dangerous driving such as hoon behaviour, burnout activity and red-light compliance. Detective acting Superintendent Donna Hofmeier said police were concerned with a small number of drivers who put other road users at risk. “While the majority of our drivers do the right thing each day on our roads, there is a percentage that are choosing to do things that are dangerous to other road users and themselves,” she said. “We’ve had a number of incidents in just the past week
that include failing to stop at intersections, excessive speeding, driving on the wrong side of the road and failing to stop for police.” Police are also reminding motorists that red lights are a key safety feature on our roads and are not to be ignored. Between 2016 and 2021, an average of more than 5,500 infringements were issued by police and fixed cameras at red lights. Anyone with information about dangerous driving is urged to contact Crime Stoppers via crimestoppersact.com.au or on 1800 333 000.

cover story Louise Momber dreams of a cancer-free future

One in seven women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, a fact of life Mother’s Day Classic ambassador Louise Momber is determined to change. Ms Momber uses her communication skills as a journalist, her insight as a daughter who lost both parents to cancer, and her passion as the mother of two young girls to do her bit to eradicate the disease. “I’d really love for breast cancer not just to be part of the community, not just to be something that you accept is always going to be there,” she said. Ms Momber’s mother, Liz, died of cancer in 2012, two months after seeing her daughter marry Seven Network journalist, Rob Scott. Two months later, her father, Peter, died of cancer as well. Ms Momber said she wanted young Australians, including her daughters, six-year-old Ivy and three-year-old Margot, to live to see a cancer-free future. “So, I’m doing a really small part to try and encourage awareness, and to just push as hard as we can to eventually find a cure.” The dedicated fundraiser will direct her energy to the Mother’s Day Classic in Canberra this year, where her family has relocated for a couple of years while her husband reports on federal politics. Ms Momber originally became involved with the annual fun run and walk through her work at 9 News Perth, and her mum joined in too. “She herself was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004, so when she came along with me in 2008, it was a really special morning.
“She was on the other side of her battle with breast cancer, but she was surrounded by these wonderful like-minded people who all had the same goal.” Mother and daughter continued to walk the Mother’s Day Classic together until 2010, when Liz was diagnosed with another form of cancer which proved fatal. “We always vowed to do it together, and so now I have my own daughters, I want to carry on the tradition,” Ms Momber said. “And I just want to make them really aware of what the Mother’s Day Classic is, and what we’re trying to achieve.” For her littlest, Margot, it is still mostly “an excuse to wear pink”, while her eldest, Ivy, is “starting to understand that there’s a much, much bigger mission involved”. “It’s something that I hope I can continue doing for as long as the event is going on. “And for me, all these years on, it still means as much to me now as it did back then.” Over 23 years, the Mother’s Day Classic has raised $37.95 million for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. And progress is being made; the five-year breast cancer survival rate has increased from 76% to 91% since 1994. But without continued research, 27,000 more lives will be lost by 2030, according to a Mother’s Day Classic fact sheet. Since COVID-19, the Mother’s Day Classic has ‘gone local’, with staggered walks planned at Lake Burley Griffin and Lake Ginninderra from 8am on Mother’s Day, Sunday 9 May. Local doctor spotlight: From Bristol to Belconnen via Benghazi Kippax health hub grows with a new doctor, weekend clinics, X-ray and cafe Medical centres are always busy as the weather gets colder, treating patients with seasonal colds and flus and administering flu jabs. This year, many are even busier as they play their role in the COVID-19 vaccination rollout. So Ochre Medical Centre in Kippax is even more delighted than usual to welcome a new GP. Medical Coordinator Dr Jo Crookes says, “The arrival of Dr Alex Shaw is perfectly timed. He is a wonderful doctor and adding him to our team allows us to stay open longer and introduce a Saturday morning GP
clinic and a Saturday afternoon COVID19 vaccination clinic. Alex has moved into the local Belconnen area with his family, so he is a great option as a long-term family GP.” Dr Crookes is also excited about the services being added to the health hub. “We have had excellent onsite dietetics, podiatry, pathology and physio services since we opened, and we now have radiology too, with a dentist and a pharmacy to come soon. An awesome new café is also due to open any day… so to say I’m excited is an understatement!
Originally from the UK, Dr Alex Shaw joined the navy to see the world. Stints on a warship in the Arabian Gulf, supporting antipiracy operations off Somalia, and transporting refugees from Benghazi to Malta followed. This led to an interest in aid work. “Having been so close to humanitarian crises, I felt quite hopeless - I wanted to be on the ground and use my skills more”. He would go on to work in a Greek refugee camp on the border of Macedonia. Dr Shaw completed his GP training in Bristol, also volunteering as a doctor at festivals like the famous Glastonbury Festival, and gaining Diplomas in Tropical Medicine and the Medical Care of Catastrophes. The Brexit vote prompted him to relocate to New Zealand, where he worked in a rural clinic, often as the sole doctor. As well as clifftop callouts with the local ambulance service, he tells of a house-bound patient in a remote village. “She had terrible joint pains and for ten years her doctors put that down to weight and depression. I thought, let’s go back to basics and see what’s really going on here. To do
Dr Alex Shaw so, I had to build the relationship so she felt comfortable enough to be admitted for investigation and blood tests.” He ultimately found the patient had undiagnosed rheumatoid arthritis that was very treatable. “Often when a new doctor comes in with no blinkers on, they can be effective in providing quality care. It was so good to be able to tell her ‘it’s not all in your mind, it’s not you being difficult, you have pain caused by this illness and we can do something about it’.”
It’s vaccination time New medical imaging service and cafe Kippax Medical Imaging has just opened in the Ochre Health Hub complex, offering X-ray, ultrasound, CT scans, dental imaging and other radiology services. Coming soon is Script Cafe, with single origin coffees, freshly baked
pastries, other sweet and savoury treats and a wide range of gourmet sandwiches and salads on offer. Kippax Medical Imaging: Phone 0450 844 988 Monday-Friday 8.30am-5pm Saturday 9am-12pm
COVID-19 Vaccinations are currently available at Ochre Medical Centre Kippax every week at our special Saturday afternoon clinics. You don’t need to be an existing patient to book in to the clinic, but you do need to be eligible for your vaccination. The rollout recently expanded to include those over 50 years old, as well as priority patients such as primary healthcare workers and those with chronic health conditions.
You can visit healthdirect.gov.au to check whether you’re eligible yet, and make an online booking if you are. If you’re not yet eligible, you can sign up to be notified when it’s your turn. Now would also be a great time for your annual flu shot, as you will need to wait at least 15 days between vaccinations, so if you’re keen to get them all completed before winter really kicks in, it’s time to act.

news Dogs are man’s best friend – but for veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder, they are a lifesaver. Defence Community Dogs visited Canberra, the country’s biggest concentration of ADF personnel, last Thursday to introduce their assistance dogs: rescued or rehomed Labradors, trained by prison inmates, that help serving and former ADF members manage illness and injuries. Veteran Miles Jones* said getting his dog two years ago made a profound difference to his life. Three decades in the military had left its scars. “Before I got him, I was in a bad space. … I’d sort of disconnected from my children, my grandchildren, my wife. It was getting very, very difficult. “It’s absolutely amazing the change. I say to people he’s not a fix-all, and he’s not; he’s a tool in the toolbox, but
it’s like having a toolbox without a hammer. He’s that important.” The dogs are trained to alleviate symptoms of PTSD, trainer Teneka Priestly explained: shaking legs; obsessive compulsive behaviour like rubbing skin until it bleeds, flicking bands until bruised, squeezing thumbs and fingers; and night terrors. The dogs can also obey a ‘Block’ command to stop people entering their owners’ personal space; turn on lights; and scan rooms. “I’ve started to reconnect with people,” Mr Jones said. “I’ve started to go out again and socialise. I’m not as uncomfortable going into shopping centres anymore; especially with my kids, it’s been awesome. The changes he’s made are absolutely profound.” Mr Jones is one of 52 Australian veterans with a Defence assistance

Win-win-win: Assistance dogs save lives of veterans, prisoners

dog; 12 more dogs are being trained. Leanne Kyle set up the program in 2013, having learnt that dogs were helping with military PTSD in the UK and US. She called the program a ‘win-win-win’. “This program saves three lives. It provides abandoned dogs with a second chance; rehabilitates inmates; and saves the lives of Australian Defence Force veterans.” Inmates at Bathurst Correctional Complex spend almost a year training the dogs, working with Ms Priestley and other trainers. Accompanied by prison officers, the inmates take the dogs anywhere veterans might go. The inmates start talking to people after many years of not talking to the public. Training the dogs, Ms Priestly believes, gives the inmates responsibility for another creature, and teaches them to be consistent. The program works; the recidivism rate is zero. “We haven’t had one of the inmates come back to custody yet that has done this program,” Bathurst Correctional Complex’s acting governor Brett Lees said. The inmates in the program, he said, are “just average blokes that have done something wrong in the past” – drug offences, not murder or sexual assault.
At the end of the 10 months, the veterans spend eight days at the Bathurst prison, meeting the Labradors, and learning how to train the dogs, manage and handle them, veterinary care, and advanced dog training skills. At the end, the inmates hand the dogs over to their new owners. One veteran’s wife told Mr Lees she was no longer afraid to leave her husband alone any more. “I know he’s still going to be at home when I get there, because the dog’s there.” It takes $10,000 to train each dog. Defence Community Dogs is funded by the Defence Bank Foundation, a registered charity that supports current and former ADF members suffering from injuries or illnesses. Defence Community Dogs also relies on donations to pay for veterinary costs, purchasing the dogs, their food, and equipment. news Two further peafowl deaths in the Inner South last week have prompted community members to renew their calls for road safety improvements in parts of Red Hill and Narrabundah. According to convenor of local group the Narrabundah Peafowlers, Tim DeWan, the two young peacocks were killed when they were hit by a van on La Perouse Street on the afternoon of 27 April. Mr DeWan wants a roundabout at the intersection of La Perouse Street and Carnegie Crescent, 40km/h speed limits on either side of the intersection and road markings like zigzags and peacocks to remind people to slow down for the benefit of the birds and residents. Four ‘peafowl crossing’ signs were installed at the intersection last year. He says people taking “an extra 10 seconds” to get their destination could make a real difference to road safety in the area.
“We want less traffic and slower speeds,” he says. “This is a major thoroughfare for people coming from the south, people going to work in the City, people dropping their kids off at schools… but it’s still in the middle of a suburb, a community. “We’re happy to give it to the experts, and then [they] consult with us, with the community.” Mr DeWan says the local peafowl are simply the unfortunate victims of increased dangerous driving in the area. He estimates 30 birds used to call the area home, with around nine killed in the last 10-or-so months. Griffith resident Leo Dobes, a member of both the GriffithNarrabundah Community Association and the Inner South Canberra Community Council, shares the concerns about dangerous driving in the area.
“There is speeding,” he says. “But the bigger problem is there’s quite a number of stop signs at dangerous intersections and they’re totally ignored. “It’s irresponsible and it’s going to cause an accident someday.” Mr Dobes says the issues could be alleviated by more police in the area. “I’m not an expert on what’s going to be best for that intersection,” he says. “We do need the government to have a good, hard look.” The Peafowlers met with City Services Minister Chris Steel in March and are awaiting action on their concerns. A spokesperson for Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS) says the directorate has commenced a traffic study to identify road safety issues in the area, which is expected to be complete in July. “Following this study, TCCS will

Voltaire said we must cultivate our garden; Canberrans can follow that advice thanks to a $10,000 grant from the ACT Government to set up community gardens. A total of $40,000 is available in this year’s round of the Community Garden Grants, Rebecca Vassarotti, Minister for Environment, announced on Monday. Ms Vassarotti launched the 2021 round in a garden set up by a previous recipient, the Church of the Good Shepherd, Lyneham. “Community gardens are a lot more than just gardening,” she said. “They bring connectedness, a sense of community, and help to maintain and improve the wellbeing and mental health of individuals and the community.” The Church of the Good Shepherd used its 2019 grant to start a garden from scratch, to give the Lyneham community somewhere to work and grow produce, and to bring lonely people together,
chairperson Cheryl Turek said. Last year’s COVID restrictions may have made it difficult to foster community spirit as much as the church would like, but the garden has become quite popular. The church distributes the vegetables it grows to the community; some return the favour by sharing baked goods. Early May is the tail end of harvest season, but the garden grows tomatoes, onions, garlic, beans, snow peas, parsley, strawberries, beetroot, spinach, pumpkins, sunflowers, salvia, lavender and rosemary. The 2021 grants are the seventh round since 2015; over that time, the ACT Government has given 50 projects more than $188,000 in total. Applications close on 28 June. - Nick Fuller Find an extended version of this story online at canberraweekly.com.au

Brumbies through to Super Rugby grand final
Brumbies winger Tom Wright scores a try in the Super Rugby AU Semi Final against the Western Force at GIO Stadium in Canberra on 1 May.
The Brumbies have booked their place in the Super Rugby AU grand final thanks to a gritty 21-9 victory at home over the Western Force at GIO Stadium on Saturday 1 May. The win gives the Brumbies a chance at back-to-back titles when they take on the Queensland Reds in the decider on 8 May. The Brumbies dominated possession and territory for much of the match, but the Force defence made them work for everything. First-half tries to Tom Wright and Tom Banks gave the Brumbies a 12-3 lead at the break as the Force were down to 14 men for 20 minutes after a red card to Toni Pulu. The Force refused to surrender and got within 6 points twice in the second half but two late penalty goals to Ryan Lonergan sealed the 12-point win. The Brumbies take on the Reds at Suncorp Stadium in the Super Rugby AU grand final on Saturday 8 May 7.45pm. Visit ticketek.com.au for tickets.
Raiders lose fourth straight The Canberra Raiders suffered yet another second-half collapse as they went down 34-20 to the South Sydney Rabbitohs at GIO Stadium in their fourth straight loss. Canberra held a two-point lead heading into the break but quickly fell behind before some controversial bunker decisions ended a late fightback. The Rabbitohs scored three tries in the first 20 minutes of the second half to open up a 16-point lead as the Raiders came out flat after the break once again. Canberra started to mount a comeback late when Jordan Rapana crossed for his second try to bring the margin back to 12 points. 18
canberraweekly.com.au
However, controversy struck as the bunker disallowed two Jack Wighton tries for obstruction, leaving the 14,260 strong home crowd and coach Ricky Stuart fuming. “Anybody with common sense in regard to rugby league knows that they were two tries, but while that type of interpretation is in the game it’s going to be a blight on the game, we’ve been talking about it for years,” said Stuart post-match. The Raiders will look to get their season back on track when they head to Wagga Wagga to take on the Newcastle Knights on Saturday 8 May 3pm. Visit ticketek.com.au for tickets.
Giants win big in Adelaide A wonderful Giants debut from Jesse Hogan helped the club to a big 67-point victory over the Crows at Adelaide Oval on Saturday 1 May. Hogan booted four goals in the 4.15 (39) to 15.16 (106) victory to put the Giants just one win outside the top eight. The Giants were wasteful in the first quarter as they kicked 1.8 to lead by just seven points at quarter time. The second quarter was far more fruitful as they booted five goals to one to open up a 32-point lead at the main break. The Crows never looked like getting back into the contest as the Giants dominated proceedings, winning every quarter on their way to a third victory in their past four matches. Lachie Whitfield was also influential in his return from a serious liver injury, picking up 30 disposals, while Canberra boy Tom Green chipped in with 22 touches and two goals. Round 8 sees the Giants host the Essendon Bombers at Giants Stadium at Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday 8 May 1.45pm. Visit afl.com.au for tickets. -Vincent Samaras

Questacon’s Australia in Space shoots for the stars
After countless hours behind the scenes preparing for lift off, Questacon has called all systems go on their latest exhibition, Australia in Space. With an estimated 30,000 jobs set to be created in the Australian space sector over the next decade, the exhibition sets out to inspire the next generation of space enthusiasts and professionals. Many key actors in the industry, including Australian Space Agency (ASA) amongst others, have teamed up with Questacon to create the highly interactive exhibition. ASA deputy head, Anthony Murfett, said the exhibition offers insight into Australia’s role in the modern global space sector and makes it tangible for the audience. “What we really want to do is inspire the nation,” he said. “Just being able to come in and be able to see satellites, robotics, rockets. “And for kids, even if they go and do something else, at least they’ve got that insight into what Australia can do.” Questacon concepts and exhibitions manager, Dylan Barker, told Canberra Weekly that Australia in Space is all about our space industry and our
contributions to the global space sector. “We’re having a look at how we get to space, what we’re doing when we’re there and why it’s important and interesting,” he said. Barker said the exhibition is tailored to primaryschool aged children spanning the gamut from wannabe-astronauts to complete newcomers, and their parents. “A real challenge for us is how do we meet the need of all of those audiences,” he said. “Some of the ways we’ve tried to do that is through a variety of experiences. “We want to make sure all of our visitors can find an entry point with a variety of different interactives and find something for them to engage with.” Australia in Space is on display at Questacon for approximately 12 months. Artists will have access to The Courtyard Studio from Monday to Friday to develop their ideas and, at the end of the week, an invite-only industry showing to support the future of the work will be facilitated. The Centre will cover all venue and associated costs as well as artist fees for up to six artists. Expressions of interest for this opportunity close Monday 17 May 4pm. The four-week residency on 2-29 August has been established for artists with developed ideas that are ready to rehearse and perform, and comprises two weeks in the rehearsal room, one week for technical rehearsal and five performances. This residency also includes all venue and associated costs. In addition, the Centre will fund and roll out all marketing and publicity for the presentation and provide support from its programming and technical teams. Expressions of interest for the four-week residency close Monday 31 May 4pm. An information session will be held Monday 10 May 5.30pm.

Now showing Land (M) Edee (Robin Wright) has experienced the loss of her husband and young son and breaks down in front of her sister (Kim Dickens), who makes Edee promise not to harm herself. Soon, Edee retreats to an isolated cabin deep within the beautiful but isolated Wyoming wilderness to be by herself. From the get-go, Edee is distraught by the tragedy she has experienced. Wishing for nothing more than to distance herself from her life, connections, and anything reminding her of her loss, she isolates herself. While her reckless and amateurish attempts at surviving in the remote wilderness bring avoidable pain and suffering, Edee learns from the ground up the importance of connections and relationships. Leading her directorial debut, Wright is sympathetic and empathetic. The want of retreat and isolation after a hardship is explored literally and exhaustively in a Spartan cabin in the Wyoming wilderness; a place to exorcise her prior life and to restart by repairing a hut and eating only canned goods. In her attempts to push her former life far away, Edee is inevitably confronted by her unavoidable pain and memories. A minimalist and grassroots friendship with
Robin Wright makes her directorial debut and stars in Land (M), set in the wilderness of Wyoming, USA.
neighbour (Demián Bichir) slowly brings Edee around to learning the necessity of relationships to live a full life. Verdict: With the beautiful vistas, credit-font and soundtrack evoking rural Americana, Land is a strong directorial debut from Wright showcasing the importance of community. Land is screening at Dendy and Palace cinemas. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

This week, Jeff Popple reviews two novels of suspense and a romance for Mother’s Day. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Take Me Home by Karly Lane Allen & Unwin, $29.99
Popular Australian rural romance author Karly Lane heads off in a new direction with her latest novel, Take Me Home. Elle is in a state of upheaval. She has lost her job and her home, and her beloved Gran has just died. Desperate to avoid moving back in with her oppressive parents, she sets off to Scotland with her grandmother’s ashes to fulfil a promise. Of course, nothing goes as planned, and Elle finds herself solving old secrets and taking new chances. Full of romance, humour and a touch of the supernatural, this is another engaging tale by the reliable Karly Lane. A great present for Mother’s Day.
The Old Enemy by Henry Porter Hachette, $32.99
Henry Porter is one of Britain’s leading contemporary spy novelists and The Old Enemy is a terrific espionage thriller that grips the reader’s attention from beginning to end. This is the third novel in Porter’s series about ex-MI6 agent Paul Samson and opens with the murder of a former British spy on a remote stretch of the Baltic coastline. Meanwhile, billionaire philanthropist Denis Hisami is poisoned with a chemical nerve agent as he is giving evidence at a US Congressional hearing. Linking the two events is Paul Samson, who is also targeted for death. Intelligent, exciting and keenly aware of modern geopolitics, this is an outstanding spy thriller.

Also very enjoyable is Amy Suiter Clarke’s debut crime novel Girl, 11. Drawing on the current popularity of true crime podcasts, Girl, 11 follows podcaster Elle Castillo as she investigates a decades-old serial killer cold case. The Countdown Killer terrorised Minneapolis over a fouryear period as he targeted increasingly younger women and girls, before abruptly stopping. Elle is not convinced that he is dead and when her podcast seemingly provokes new murders, she desperately tries to stop the killer. This is a gripping, well written and briskly paced thriller that quickly draws the reader in and keeps them engaged until the last page.

What your face reveals Have you ever noticed dark circles under your eyes, prominent lines or skin breakouts recurring in the same place? According to Chinese medicine, each of these features tell us a story and can alert you to imbalances in your wellbeing. Dark circles The area under the eyes reflects the health of the kidneys, according to Chinese medicine, and is typically a sign of prolonged stress, adrenal fatigue and exhaustion. If the adrenal fatigue continues long term, the space under the eyes can develop a sunken look suggesting further depletion. Skin breakouts Pimples and acne generally are considered a sign your digestion and elimination systems are not functionally optimally. The location of the breakouts gives us more information as in Chinese medicine, the face is divided into zones like a map that are associated with corresponding internal organs. Some of the most common areas are:
• Forehead Small intestine area: may indicate the presence of food intolerances and associated bloating and discomfort in the region around your belly button. • Cheek bones Stomach area: may be associated with reflux plus tension around the diaphragm and shallow breathing. • Around the mouth Large intestine: you may also experience constipation, IBS or diarrhea. • Chin Hormonal imbalance: especially if the pimples appear around the same time in the menstrual cycle, typically pre-menstrual. Prominent lines and wrinkles You know the old saying, a picture tells a thousand words; the lines on our face can be whole books in themselves. Whilst there are many features to look for, two of the most common are: • Deep lines between the eyebrows are a liver sign in Chinese medicine and can indicate
WITH WESLEY SMITH DIRECTOR, LIVE WELL SPA & WELLNESS CENTRE MANUKA livewellnaturally.com.au meditatewithwes.com
long held frustration, tension and anger. • Prominent lines across the forehead are considered a spleen sign and associated with an anxious and worrying mind and potentially past shock or trauma. The good news is that as you treat the underlying imbalances, not only will your face change, you are also supporting your whole system to move towards optimal wellbeing. The art of Chinese medicine is to take the signs that show up on the face, along with other information such as a detailed case history, diagnostic techniques like tongue and pulse diagnosis, and weave together a thorough understanding of the state of your health. Editor’s note: Our rotating wellbeing and fitness columns provide information that is general in nature. Please always refer to your preferred health professional for advice suited to your personal healthcare requirements.

Revamp the bedroom Craving a change to your space but not sure where to start? Georgie Leckey, Director of Heatherly Design, shares six trendy tips to revamp the bedroom. WITH HOME EDITOR, ERIN CROSS
1
A custom bedhead is the ideal way to revamp a bedroom for the new season whilst adding an extra layer of comfort. This winter we’re all about understated luxury with an emphasis on clean design, natural textures and organic form – nothing too OTT.
2 3 4
Bolster cushions are a simple way to add shape, depth and colour to the bed.
5
If space permits, consider a storage box or an upholstered footstool at the end of the bed. They are perfect for taking shoes off at night, or for our little fourlegged friends to use as a steppingstone onto the bed!
6
Consider a locally made bedside table that allows for discreet storage.
Oslo bedhead in Smoke Velvet starting from $2,160, available at heatherlydesign.com.au
Invest in a quality eiderdown or throw for the end of the bed. A new season is the best time to change your bedlinen with quality sheets in pure starchy linen. This autumn, we’re interpreting rich earthy tones for our bedroom schemes – think camel, bluestone and sesame.

At home at ‘Hazelgrove’ Collector NSW 10 Murray Street This home in the NSW village of Collector has been architecturally designed with high ceilings, spacious rooms and a showstopping kitchen. Ray White Rural Canberra/ Yass real estate and stock and station agent, George Southwell, says ‘Hazelgrove’ is a rural retreat, perfect for a young or growing family, close to all the amenities of Canberra and Goulburn. “Hazelgrove is well suited to an entertainer,” Southwell says. “The kitchen features a chef’s
oven and opens out via double doors to a covered alfresco area which is enclosed at the other end with louvre windows to ensure enjoyment throughout all four seasons.” The home was designed by wellknown Goulburn architect Andrew Randall and completed in 2006. It boasts four bedrooms and a wealth of living areas over two storeys, as well as outdoor space in abundance with more entertaining areas and established gardens. “The resurgence in city dwellers

embracing the work-from-home directive induced by the pandemic has seen people want to relocate to the wide-open spaces and fresh air in regional areas,” says Southwell. “But people are seeking a modern design and that’s where Hazelgrove delivers; it’s a true country estate offering the best in home design and high-quality finishes that wouldn’t be out of place in homes built today.” Hazelgrove is also home to a main bedroom suite with ensuite and walk-in robe, slow combustion fireplace, upstairs ‘retreat’, and large mudroom/laundry. The openplan living room includes a bar area with built-in cupboards, sink and space for a fridge. “Hazelgrove is ideally situated a stone’s throw from local favourite, Some Café, and local cellar door,
Collector Wines,” says Southwell. “Collector is located 2.5 hours to Sydney and only 30 minutes to the Nation's Capital.” The vacant 2,000sqm block next door, 8 Murray Street, is also for sale, with the option to be purchased separately or together with number 10.

Weekly market wrap
Adjusted expectations see buyers turn to unit market
Nationally, property prices are experiencing robust growth. Data from CoreLogic found values of Canberra houses increased by 2.1% and unit values increased by 1.2% during April. Media were slow to start covering the apartment market favourably. However, as values are climbing nationally, analysts and property market commentators have started rushing to share their opinions on the next best investment opportunity. In Canberra, the speed values are increasing by is forcing some buyers to rapidly adjust their expectations or find themselves left behind by the market. During the second half of 2020, this compromise was seen when buyers who could not find suitable houses adjusted their expectations and bought a townhouse. Now, due to an extreme shortage of quality townhouses available on the market, there is a rapidly growing cohort of buyers considering apartments. Increasing demand is catching some buyers off-guard as they find by taking their time to make decisions, they risk sales milestones being achieved,
triggering price increases. CoreLogic data found Canberra units had an annual increase in value of 7.6% giving confidence to developers to increase prices. Prospective buyers researching the market can find it difficult to distinguish between credible sources like CoreLogic and Domain that genuinely understand the market and have data-backed insights, and ‘advisors’ who appear to act as a buyer’s agent but usually focus on how many parts of the transaction they can ‘clip the ticket’ on. Often, they receive fees of more than 5% of purchase price, plus receive referral fees, or have in-house teams for a package of associated services including conveyancing, property management and mortgage broking. Supply in Canberra is often misunderstood as the delivery mechanism for apartments is time consuming and slow. It often takes over 24 months from the time pre-sales commence to a project settling. In an area it may appear as though there is a lot of competition, however, if you break each

project down to its stage of delivery, it is uncommon to see multiple projects at the same stage of construction. This could explain why rents are high and the rental vacancy rate is persistently low in Canberra. Buyers wanting to future-proof their property and avoid high transaction costs might use delivery timeframes to improve their financial circumstances. This could include saving a bigger deposit or securing more favourable employment in the time between when they exchange contracts and when they settle. For some, this is a huge advantage over buying an established property which requires purchasers to be ready to settle within 30-60 days. A celebration of character Boorowa NSW 59 Queen Street This circa 1920s home in the NSW town of Boorowa has been renovated in celebration of its charm and character. The double brick Federation home boasts a variety of charming features, including wide hallways, high ceilings and picture rails. Director of Flemings Property Services, Justin Fleming, says the three-bedroom home would be perfect for first home buyers, investors, or even downsizers – 59 Queen Street sits close to all the amenities of the area, including ovals, shops, club, the school and golf course. “It’s a very well-presented home in a sought-after location,” he says. The open plan living and dining space is home to a slow combustion wood heater, and adjoins the new, state-of-the-art kitchen which fits perfectly in this character home. Each bedroom has built-in robes, all with new carpet and a fresh coat of paint, while an 48

office provides an extra space for working from home or for use as a nursery. Outside, the manicured gardens complement the home’s Federation façade. Covered alfresco entertaining spaces – in the backyard and a porch front and back – provide a variety of options for spending time with family and friends or simply taking in the country air. Steeped in history, the small town of Boorowa sits half an hour from the town of Young and just 90 minutes to the Nation’s Capital.

in the stars ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN
The New Moon on 11 May is the ideal time to investigate subjects that have always fascinated you and for short distance journeys. Be certain not to make any emotional purchases and to read the small print on any long-term financial contracts before signing your life away.
The secretive area of your chart is highlighted by Venus and your imagination is running riot. If you have an artistic job, you will be doing very well. The New Moon on 11 May is the ideal time to work solidly and focus on putting your life into order.
If you’ve been working extra hard lately, don’t worry. This is exactly what you should be doing and the stars will sort it out for you in time. The New Moon on 11 May is the ideal time to start a new health routine or eliminate certain food groups from your diet.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY
The tension in the planets is urging you to think about those patterns of behaviour that lead you to doubt yourself when there is no need to do so. The New Moon on 11 May is the ideal time to make fresh starts with your career, ambitions and public image.
While Venus squares Neptune from 10 May to 3 June, the possibility of being taken advantage of by scammers is higher during this transit, so be alert. The New Moon on 11 May is the ideal time to organise a financial plan which may involve retirement or selling property.
SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV The planets are focusing on the area of your chart that is devoted to health matters, where you need to take a bit of extra care. The New Moon on 11 May is ideal for dealing with joint finances and sorting out official or government matters.
A positive way to deal with the challenging transit when Venus squares Neptune from 10 May to 3 June, is to start a regular exercise routine and to be accountable for self-indulgences. The New Moon on 11 May is the ideal time to enjoy the company of younger people.
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR
While Venus drifts along in Gemini, your opposite number, you’ll have to comply with other people’s wishes and be far more considerate than usual. The New Moon on 11 May is the ideal time to let that someone special or a loved one know just how much they mean to you.
Those closest to you, both at home and at work, may want to make some changes. Don’t worry, because this is unlikely to be anything too drastic. The New Moon on 11 May is the ideal time to enjoy the special connections you have with longterm friends and family members.
Happy Birthday Taurus! Venus in Gemini, the financial area of your chart, throws a happy glow over your money and income which seems to be increasing. The New Moon on 11 May is urging you to focus on improving your image at work or creating a new income stream.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE Geminis don’t take commitments lightly, so any decisions made on the relationships front will be made carefully. Throughout May, do not doubt your abilities, stand your ground and trust your intuition. The New Moon on 11 May is the ideal time to indulge yourself in something special!
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT The career sector of your chart is highlighted and you’re much more confident with professional matters. It’s a great time for putting ingenious ideas to your boss because they will certainly listen. The New Moon on 11 May is the ideal time to connect with those from interstate or overseas.

WIN! Death of a Ladies’ Man (CTC) film passes Samuel O’Shea (Gabriel Byrne), a hard drinking womaniser, has seen better days. His second marriage is ending, and his first wife and two grown children have turned against him. More problematic, he has begun seeing things: strangers sing and dance to Leonard Cohen tunes; and his much-missed deceased father Ben O’Shea (Brian Gleeson) pops up for chats. Looking for answers, Samuel discovers he has a terminal brain tumour, which may be causing these odd visions, or he may just be going crazy. Samuel retreats to his family shack in remote Ireland where he meets Charlotte (Jessica Paré), who is full of unexpected surprises. Canberra Weekly has 10 x Death of a Ladies’ Man in-season double passes to be won.
Enter to WIN To enter, visit canberraweekly.com.au and click on the ‘Entertainment’ tab to ‘Competitions’, find the competition you wish to enter and follow the entry instructions. Entries close 9am Friday 14 May 2021 and winners drawn same day. One entry per person. Entrants must be aged 18+.

My favourite things
MY WILD FEMININI-TEE
I thoroughly enjoy the meditation of knitting. My must-have materials are using the thread of social equity, armed with one stick (diverse leadership models), and the second stick (practice-relevant, theory-informed research). It requires patience, humility, and a clear vision for the end result.
Besides the deliciously formidable design, this shirt represents the only things I like about wearing clothes: it’s sustainably made in a slow-fashion cycle, designed by a Canberra-woman artist, and part of a mission to amplify the voices of women through wearable art.

Rae Knopik
Founder and President of CBR Gals Network
Rae Knopik is a passionate feminist, not-for-profit founder, innovator and author. She is the current Board President of the CBR Gals Network, a feminist not-for-profit which she founded, that connects and amplifies women and their businesses. Since its inception in 2018, the organisation has impacted over 5,000 women, girls, non-binary and queer people, providing them opportunities to improve the status of their lives. In Rae’s professional capacity, she harnesses cutting-edge research in women’s leadership to create leadership opportunities for thousands of women and girls across Canberra annually. A sought-after speaker and writer, Rae and her work has featured in publications ranging from the local to international, with guest appearances on a number of podcasts, interviews and panels.
MY BIG FAT INTERNATIONAL FAMILY Being an American-Italian bitza in Australia means there’s over 100 people I call family. The way I feel about my partner Declan, three siblings, parents, and the rest of this international mob is perfectly summed up by Mom (sic) and Dad: “At the end of the day, it’s all you got”.
DANCING
THE CBR GALS
It’s what I’m doing when I feel most alive.
Find a gal-group like CBR Gals, and you’d be giddy too.
