This week... o
Canberra shivered through a chilly -5 C overnight last Saturday, already colder than the lowest minimum recorded in the ‘Berra last year. I wait with misty breath to see what this winter has in store ... So, preparing to head to my nearby Sunday morning farmers’ market, I dressed like an onion – layer upon layer. Thermals under my civvies, well-loved woollen socks (in their third decade of use) inside my boots, gloves, a scarf, and fleecy headband over my ears, all topped off with my most-used piece of winter clothing – a mid-length puffer coat. Feather-light, cosy and washable, what’s not to love? Considering myself suitably attired, I was struck by various outfits being worn by other marketgoers given the thermometer was still in minus territory. One man in shorts and thongs wearing a beanie and short puffer jacket (business up top, party down below) and another in boots, thick socks and long pants topped with a short-sleeve polo shirt. To each their own. Reasons to be grateful this past week include a fabulous night of uplifting music and heart-warming friendship at the Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s Longing and Desire concert, a celebration of compassion and creativity at Dr Merlinda Bobis’ book launch, The Kindness of Birds, overdue catch-ups with friends, intriguing cinema at the German Film Festival preview night, and celebrating my first-born’s 29th birthday. Many happy returns, son! - Julie Samaras

news National Volunteer Week (17–23 May) is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteers. Canberra Weekly talked to four public-spirited locals who volunteer with the ACT Emergency Services Agency, putting out fires, alerting neighbours, and making maps. “It’s a time to reflect on how we help out the community, with our colleagues, from all services,” said cartographer Alex von Brandenstein. Mientje Bramham qualified as an operational firefighter with the ACT Rural Fire Service in time for the ‘Black Summer’ of 2019/20. Despite a lot of training, her first fireground was scary: North Black Range near Braidwood NSW. “It was the middle of the day, but it started to get really dark like it was night-time. That was extremely nerve-wracking.” Luckily, she said, her fire crews were led by experienced people. “One has been fighting fires longer than I’ve been alive! There was lots of support and camaraderie from the team, and someone was always looking out for you.” Her nerves quickly passed, and she felt competent. “It was so rewarding to meet some of the local landowners we were helping.” As her brigade’s community engagement officer, Ms Bramham talks to schools, scout groups and the public about the RFS and fire and safety. “It’s great for them to see a woman in the role who is active and moving machinery, and doing things you wouldn’t necessarily think
we’re capable of.” Philip Nolan, commander of the Tuggeranong State Emergency Service, had an “intense” 2019/20. During the bushfires, the SES helped the local RFS teams. In the middle of the fires, he said, came the hailstorms; and then COVID. The SES was there, doing logistics work or doorknocking. Mr Nolan, a retired statistician, and his wife joined the SES 11 years ago. “The commander’s role is basically making sure that everyone is up to scratch as far as their training goes, making sure that at the end of the day people go home safely to their families.” The Tuggeranong SES team has nearly 60 members, ranging in age from 18 to nearly 80 – a good cross-section of the community, Mr Nolan said. Deanne Callaway has been with the ACT Fire and Rescue Community Fire Unit in Chapman since 2007. The CFU looks after blocks of streets near possible firegrounds, preplanning and preparing homes before Fire and Rescue or the RFS arrive. “We keep the drains clean; we get the standpipes and hoses ready to wet everything down; and we try to get the community to understand about fire control in their yards,” Ms Callaway said. During last year’s bushfires, she and her fellow CFU volunteers kept their keys in their hand and their kit by the front door in case the fire came

close. At one point, the blaze was 12 km from her street. “We could see it from our house. But we were lucky enough. The fire was being pushed across; it wasn’t coming towards us.” Alex von Brandenstein makes the operational and tactical maps used in natural disasters (such as the Orroral Valley fire or the Queensland floods), and by the police in search and rescue missions. A professional cartographer, he joined the ACTESA Mapping and Planning Support (MAPS) team in 2009 when it was set up after the Victorian fires. “Going from regular mapping to emergency management was exciting,” he said. “You’ve got your normal day job, where you use your normal skill set. All of a sudden, you’re put into a pressure environment needing to deliver the goods, to help out people in distress, or who need help, or assisting saving property.” - Nick Fuller
Homes for Indigenous elderly to be built in Dickson

Plumes of smoke rose from a Dickson construction site last week – an Aboriginal ceremony traditionally held to drive away bad spirits and cleanse the site. By the end of the year, this bare earth, strewn with trucks and

diggers, will become five two-bedroom homes for 10 elderly Ngunnawal people. “It will be a safe place for them – a strong and spiritually safe place, as well,” said Ngunnawal elder Caroline Hughes. The Housing ACT complex, known as Ningulangu (“Belonging to: home, place”), is near the Dickson shops and the tram. It will be culturally appropriate, with yarning circles, fire pits, and native gardens in each dwelling. The ACT Government will select tenants based on advice from the Elected Body and elders. Ngunnawal-Kamilaroi artist Richie Allan conducted the smoking ceremony. The ashes will be placed under the foundations of the houses.
“These places are not just brick and mortar; they actually have a story from start to finish, that continues when people live here,” said Yvette Berry, ACT Minister for Housing and Suburban Development. Ningulangu will be the ACT’s third housing development for elderly Indigenous people. Gundji Gindilan was built in Lyons in 2020, and Mura Gunya in Kambah in 2016. Ms Hughes told Ms Berry the ACT Government led the way across the country in engaging with the Indigenous community from design through construction to people moving in. - Nick Fuller Find extended versions of these stories and more at canberraweekly.com.au

political capital Time to end Canberra’s love affair with Labor? It’s not a claim the Labor Party would ever want to be heard making, but it’s true: Labor is the natural party of government in Canberra. Its credentials for that title are pretty hard to argue with. The ALP has contested House of Reps seats in the ACT on 33 occasions since 1977. It has won 32 of those races, almost always by crushing margins. Its record in the Legislative Assembly is almost as impressive: it has won eight of the 10 elections since self-government, usually at a canter. A large part of the reason Canberrans so consistently back Labor is self-interest. Labor is the party of big spending and big government. Big government equals more money sloshing through the Canberra economy. For locals, that means you get employment choices in the public service, your house retains its value and there are jobs for your kids. But last week’s federal budget is a reminder that this simple equation urgently needs to be rethought. Josh Frydenberg became a born-again Keynesian, and the huge cash splash that resulted is designed to supercharge the economic recovery from Covid.
Whatever its long-term economic merits, one outcome is certain: the Canberra economy will be in overdrive for at least the next five years. This is not, however, an aberration in Liberal behaviour toward Canberra, but in fact the reemergence of a sustained pattern. It was Robert Menzies’ decision to shift government departments to Canberra in the 1960s that gave the city the character we recognise today. Conversely, some of the most sustained job cutting in the public service in the last 30 years occurred in the final term of the Keating Government. Howard initially reduced government spending, and Canberra hurt badly for a couple of years. But by the late 1990s, Commonwealth spending under Howard was surging again, and Canberra’s economy was growing strongly. A similar pattern is all but guaranteed courtesy of the latest Frydenberg Budget. Consider this test of who has been the bigger benefactor of Canberra: which party built the national institutions erected here since World War II? The answer is the Liberal Party. Go on, count

them: the National Library, the National Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, etc, etc. The one major exception is the National Gallery, commenced by Whitlam. Even then, it’s telling that in the four decades since Whitlam, few of his ALP successors have bothered to add to the national treasures. It could fairly be argued that the Liberal largesse toward Canberra has been more the product of accident than design. But what could also fairly be argued is that Labor has grown to take the ACT for granted. Given that Canberra has fared just as well, overall, under Liberal governments as Labor ones, isn’t it time Canberra voters hedged their bets by making at least one of the Federal seats here more marginal? Not to change the Liberal Party’s view of Canberra, but to change Labor’s?

news Following the mixed results of the December 2020 ChooseCBR discount voucher scheme, the ACT Government this week announced a reworked version of the scheme offering $2 million worth of discounts will start next month. From Wednesday 9 June, registered customers will be able to use vouchers daily at participating businesses and receive: $10 off when you spend $20 or more; $20 off when you spend $40 or more; and $50 off when you spend $100 or more. The eligibility conditions for businesses have been tweaked to allow any small business with a turnover of under $10 million to be accepted, doing away with the JobKeeper criterion. The commencement date of 9 June, just before the Queen’s Birthday long weekend and at the start of winter,
was a tactical decision to support businesses through a traditionally quiet period. Dickson Dumpling House owner Max Jing said he had a positive experience participating in last year’s trial and is keen to let his customers know when the scheme recommences. “When you’re supporting one business in Canberra, you’re supporting the broader Canberra community,” Mr Jing said. According to Canberra Business Chamber CEO Graham Catt, business feedback from the December 2020 trial was that more marketing and communication aimed at businesses and customers was needed, and that the format of the initial scheme was too complex. To improve visibility this time around, marketing materials will be physically sent out to registered
businesses in the form of a toolkit providing posters, QR codes, a range of translated resources in 14 languages, as well as badges for staff. Approximately $200,000 will be spent promoting the program and businesses across the ACT have been contacted encouraging them to sign up. A total of 336 businesses signed up either before or during December’s ChooseCBR trial, a number Minister for Business Tara Cheyne believes will be “much higher” this time around. Mr Catt said a number of “really positive changes” have been made ahead of the full rollout, citing higher voucher values; discounts that match spending one for one; customers being able to use vouchers every day; and more resources and tools for businesses. The Canberra Liberals welcomed the changes to the scheme following

the December 2020 trial, saying the government had “heeded” their feedback by expanding eligibility and offering more significant discounts. “I called on the Minister to go back to the drawing board and am pleased she has overhauled the program,” Shadow Business Minister Leanne Castley said. – Denholm Samaras
Local doctor spotlight: The patient advocate
Dr Nguyet Phan and registrar Dr Elizabeth Muller who have recently joined the Ochre team in Calwell. Dr Nguyet Phan, who recently joined the team at Ochre Medical Centre Calwell, has worked in a wide range of practices from inner Sydney to rural Mount Isa and Hervey Bay in Queensland. “I’ve experienced it all now,” she laughs. Mount Isa was both interesting and challenging, she says. “You are taught about the challenges of Indigenous health in remote areas when you study medicine, but you

don’t really experience it until you actually work on the ground in a more isolated area. It was my first real experience of people with poor access to healthcare. There just aren’t many doctors out there, so minor things can get left untreated and then become an emergency in a way that just wouldn’t happen in the city.” Before becoming a doctor, Dr Phan worked as a physiotherapist for
three years. “That background definitely helps my work as a GP, especially when I see patients with musculoskeletal issues,” she says. She chose to become a GP because she says she likes a bit of everything and also the opportunity to provide holistic care. “I wasn’t one of those people in medical school who thought ‘I really want to focus on a particular part of the body or area of medicine’, I like variety.” “Just last week I saw a new patient with a background of mental health problems who has been struggling with his marriage. He had taken a couple days off work to get back on track and he was concerned about how his leave would be viewed at work. After we had talked, he asked me to call his boss. When I did, I explained he had been very proactive in getting help and he
was now ready to come back. I find it very rewarding to be able to advocate for patients in this way.” Dr Phan’s family is also enjoying Canberra: “We’re aiming to settle here permanently because we love the city and the surrounding area. We’ve been enjoying exploring the local trails and mountain biking at Mt Stromlo. We’ve also taken trips to Thredbo a couple of times and camped in Kosciuszko National Park.” “The kids are loving their new school and the cafes and restaurants are also really good - similar in quality to Sydney and definitely better than Queensland, in my view!” Dr Phan is accepting new patients at Ochre Medical Centre Calwell and is available every Wednesday and Thursday.

cover story Fourteen-year-old D’Shontéa (Téa) Devow was born into business and has grown up surrounded by it. The daughter of Darkies Designs founder and local Indigenous business leader, Dion Devow, Téa was selling her father’s wares at stalls when she was just four years old. Téa told Canberra Weekly she feels as though she’s “always known” she wanted to be in business. “While I was growing up, Dad had his own business and I always tried to basically take over,” she smiled. With his daughter constantly by his side asking to help run the ship, eventually Dion decided it was time to ease Téa into the world of business at the ripe age of 10 alongside her friend Belle. “He got so sick of me always asking that he decided to help me make my own,” Téa smiled. It was from there Téa & Belle was established, selling gifts and wares including T-shirts, caps, candles and wallets.
For Téa, another motivation to start the business was to spread awareness of Indigenous culture on the back of having personally experienced racism. “Nobody should be ashamed of who they are or where they come from. Through this business, it’s a way that I can really express myself,” she said. Dion said the business has also been a way for his daughter to learn about her Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture too, with most products having an Indigenous story behind them. Now four years into being one half of Téa & Belle, Téa said she’s keen to establish her own brand that would specialise in haircare products for curly hair. Dion said he was proud to see his daughter forging her own path at such a young age with his assistance. “I suppose it’s like any parent, if your child has interests you want to try and support them,” he said.

Teenage entrepreneur following in her father’s footsteps D’Shontéa Devow, 14-year-old daughter of Darkies Designs founder and local Indigenous business leader, Dion Devow, said she’s “always known” she wanted to be in business.
Téa was recently named a finalist in the 2021 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards. Positioned amid a field of finalists otherwise aged in their 20s, she was easily the youngest in her category. At the end of April, she attended the Gala presentation dinner in Sydney with over 400 guests. Given many of the guests were her peers, it presented a fantastic networking opportunity. “It was really good to also see other Indigenous people there in business,” Téa said. news Canberra is world’s most sustainable city Canberra has been named the most sustainable city in the world, leading with excellent public transport and air quality, according to a new study by Uswitch. The study analysed green spaces throughout each city, along with public transport, air quality and energy sources, giving each an index score out of 600. Canberra came out on top with a score of 427, beating Madrid (403) and Brisbane (382) to the title of the world’s most sustainable city. With 88.6% of the ACT’s
public transport infrastructure considered green and low air pollution levels, other factors that shot Canberra to the top include the use of solar power and wind farms, and 94% of residents being able to access the internet. Cities were also ranked on crime rates, affordability of property, traffic levels, pollution levels and use of renewable energy. Jeddah, Saudi Arabia was scored as the least sustainable city, followed by New Delhi in India and Amman in Jordan.
New dog laws passed From 1 July, Canberrans will need to register their dog annually on a digital database, under new dog laws passed in the ACT Legislative Assembly last week. City Services Minister Chris Steel said the laws would make it easier to reunite lost dogs with their
owners and enforce the Territory’s domestic animal legislation. Updating or confirming a dog’s details each year will come at no extra cost and owners will receive a reminder from Domestic Animal Services when their registration is due.

Weather permitting, people across Australia will be treated to a spectacular sight on Wednesday night, 26 May, as a total lunar eclipse turns the full moon red. Image: iStock
Total lunar eclipse set to turn full moon red A spectacular lunar eclipse is set to turn the full moon red on Wednesday 26 May as a Super Blood Moon graces the sky. Offering Australians some of the best views of the red moon, the event is a combination of May’s full Flower Moon, known as a “supermoon” due to its closer proximity to Earth, and a total lunar eclipse.
Unlike the Pink Supermoon that took place in April this year, the Super Blood Moon will actually appear red. ANU Astrophysicist and Cosmologist Dr Brad Tucker said the Super Blood Moon has always fascinated people around the world, with some cultures even linking the event to bad omens.
“Famously, Christopher Columbus used knowledge of an upcoming total lunar eclipse to scare Indigenous people in the Caribbean who wanted to get rid of him,” Dr Tucker said. While the red glow of the moon might look a little unnerving, Dr Tucker said the lunar eclipse will only last approximately 14 minutes, with the best time to see it between 9.11pm and 9.25pm. “The action starts at 7.44pm in Canberra where the moon will slowly darken,” he said. “Totality, when the moon is fully in the shadow and red, is between 9.11pm and 9.25pm with it all ending just before 11pm.” According to Dr Tucker, this supermoon is technically a perigeesyzygy, bringing it slightly closer to the Earth than it was in April. “The orbit of the moon isn’t perfect, and sometimes it is closer, and therefore bigger and brighter,” he said.
“This is the case with the full moon next Wednesday which also happens to be a total lunar eclipse, so a Super Blood Moon is born.” Dr Tucker explained that a total lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes through the Earth’s shadow. The combination of the size and orbit of the moon, along with the light that skims through the Earth’s atmosphere and into space, helps to produce the dark red glow. “Just as sunrise and sunset is orange or reddish, so is this light that skims through the Earth’s atmosphere,” he said. “As the moon gets perfectly centred in the shadow, it hits this orange-red light. So, you are seeing the sunrise and sunset of the Earth lighting up the moon. “The fact that we get two different physical things happening at the same time is always cool,” Dr Tucker said. - Erin Cross

Brumbies lose thriller in Christchurch A gutsy Brumbies outfit has come up just short of a remarkable upset, falling 31-29 to the Crusaders in Christchurch, NZ on Saturday 15 May. It was a slow start for the Brumbies with Scott Sio scoring their only try of the first half as they went into the break trailing 19-7. They came out strongly in the second half with a try to Irae Simone and penalty goal bringing them back to within two points. The Crusaders added two quick tries to almost put the Brumbies to bed at 31-17, but a brilliant individual
try from Tom Banks brought the away side back into it. Successive penalties gave the Brumbies field position and a Hail Mary pass from Simone found Tom Wright out wide, who flicked it back inside to Rob Valetini who bullied his way over. Noah Lolesio then had a chance to salvage a draw after the siren but sent the touchline conversion just wide as the Brumbies had to settle for a bonus point. The Brumbies now look to get a win against the Chiefs next Saturday 22 May at FMG Stadium, Waikato.

Persimmon and coconut chia pudding pots Serves 2
Perfect persimmons This week, food writer Libby Kimber is trying all things persimmons. In season now, persimmons have two varieties and can work in a range of dishes, sweet or savoury!
Thyme baked brie and persimmon crostini Serves 4 200g wheel of brie 1/2 baguette, sliced 2 Tbsp olive oil 3 sprigs fresh thyme, leaves picked Salt and pepper Handful of walnuts 3 firm, sweet persimmons, sliced 22
canberraweekly.com.au
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Place the brie on the centre of a lined baking tray surrounded by the slices of bread. Gently score the top of the brie in a crosshatch pattern. Drizzle the brie and bread with olive oil and scatter with half of the thyme leaves, pushing some of the leaves into the brie. Season generously with salt and pepper then bake for 10 minutes or until brie is soft and warm and the bread is lightly golden. Carefully transfer the baked brie to a serving board and sprinkle with remaining fresh thyme leaves and walnuts. Serve baked brie with toasted bread and slices of persimmon.
4 Tbsp black chia seeds 1 cup coconut milk 1 tsp honey or other sweetener (agave nectar, maple syrup) 1 large, ripe original persimmon, or 2 very ripe and soft sweet persimmons 1 tsp lemon juice 1/4 tsp cinnamon Toasted coconut flakes, to serve Whisk together chia seeds, coconut milk and honey in a medium bowl. Transfer to 2 large glasses and refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight. Once chia pudding is set, cut the persimmons in half from top to bottom then use a spoon to scoop out the flesh, discarding the skin. Add persimmon pulp to a small bowl along with the lemon juice and cinnamon. Stir to combine, crushing any bigger pieces of persimmon. Divide persimmon mixture between the two chia pudding glasses and sprinkle with toasted coconut flakes.
TIP! Use canned coconut milk (full-fat or light) for a richer and creamier texture. You can also use carton coconut milk or any other plant-based milk. Due to the higher water content, if you find it has not set completely, give it a stir and pop it back into the fridge for 15-30 minutes. Exploring Unbroken Connections through glass
Canberra Indigenous writer and actor Dylan Van Den Berg’s award-winning work, Milk, has undergone creative development over the past two years, and will premiere next month.
That’s arts and entertainment Award-winning play Milk to premiere next month Nearly two years to the day after its first reading at The Street, Canberra Indigenous writer and actor Dylan Van Den Berg’s award-winning work Milk will premiere next month. Having first had the idea for Milk roughly five years ago, Van Den Berg said the work is at a point where he’s ready, but admittedly “excited and terrified”, to share it with the world. Inspired by Van Den Berg’s personal family history as well as Tasmanian Aboriginal history more broadly, Milk’s creative development has been a journey of self-discovery for the writer too. “It’s been quite a journey to have to come to terms with a lot of things,” he said. “One of the big questions of the play is around how do you go through a personal process of reconciliation when you’re descendent from an incredible line of resilient Aboriginal peoples but also from the colonisers … Both of those stories exist within you.” Spanning two centuries, Milk tracks the conversation between three Aboriginal ancestors coming together on a metaphysical Flinders 24
canberraweekly.com.au
Island off the coast of Tasmania on the verge of life-changing moments. Van Den Berg said building the work around an imagined intergenerational dialogue has allowed him to intertwine and tell multiple stories. “They’re separate stories but they’re also one story,” he said, “It’s really allowed me to explore some of those generational perspectives on identity.” Prior to its premiere, the script for Milk took out the prestigious Nick Enright Prize for Playwriting. Van Den Berg said the $30,000 cash prize will give him time and space to work on his next project. Milk will be performed at The Street, City West, 4-6 and 9-12 June; thestreet.org.au - Denholm Samaras

Canberra Glassworks is now hosting solo exhibition by award-winning artist Megan Cope, featuring a new body of work as a result of her residency at the Glassworks in 2020 and 2021. On show at the Kingston venue until 18 July, Unbroken Connections features works showcasing Cope’s exploration of the ongoing connections her People have with Minjerribah (North Stradbroke Island) and wider Quandamooka Country for thousands of years and the unbroken connections between family and country. The various works include 12 shields on which the artist has used the battuto technique to simulate hand carved patterns of timber ancestral shields. Carving away layers of black glass, Cope remembers the catastrophic fires along the east coast in recent years. At times, the shields allow light to penetrate and highlight the depth of the memory existing in the trees. Other works throughout the exhibition are sand-blasted, etched and engraved, creating light-reflecting detail. Family Fun to celebrate World Bee Day Did you know today is World Bee Day? Slovenia proposed the United Nations proclaim the 20th of May as World Bee Day in 2017, and Canberra’s Capital Region Farmers Market has each year celebrated this day to recognise the importance of bees to food supply and our survival. The Market says that many of its stallholders depend on bees and other pollinating insects to survive, and this Saturday 22nd May will celebrate this with a bee focused family morning out that is both educational and fun. World Bee Day at the Capital Region Farmers Market will offer family fun including a dress up competition – with all Market visitors invited to come along dressed in their best bee theme. With hopes for a lot of visible black and yellow buzzing around the Market, visitors are invited to take a photo in front of the bee hive wall and post to Instagram or Facebook using #worldbeedaycrfm. Kids of all ages will also enjoy the bee
themed colouring in competition – have a little fun colouring in their own bee and adding it to the bee hive wall. All entries for the colouring in and best dressed competition go into the draw to win Farmers Market gift vouchers to spend on food and produce at the Market, with entries drawn at 8.30am, 9.30am and 10.30am. World Bee Day at the Market will also offer stallholders’ bee-friendly displays and exhibitions, honey and bee themed food created by Market producers, a display of hives, native plants, flowers and their growers, local and regional honey producers and information to help educate how people can help contribute to saving our bees. World Bee Day will be celebrated at the Capital Region Farmers Market at Exhibition Park in Canberra this coming Saturday 22nd May, 7am -11.30am
Did you know Australia is home to around 2000 species of native bees, the majority of which are solitary bees. European Honeybees are social insects that were introduced to pollinate many of the introduced food crops that now form part of a normal Australian diet.

Now showing Those Who Wish Me Dead (MA15+)
Traumatised former firefighting smokejumper Hannah Faber (Angelina Jolie) has been reallocated out of harm’s way to a fire lookout tower in rural and remote Park County, Montana. Meanwhile, a forensic accountant and his son are on the run from mafia assassins, which lead them into the county… Director and screenwriter Taylor Sheridan is no stranger to the neo-Western thriller genre after fantastic turns with Sicario, Hell or High Water and Wind River. Those Who Wish Me Dead is surprisingly high-concept: Hannah must protect a young murder witness while traversing a fire-drenched wilderness. Our would-be assassin brothers (Aidan Gillen and Nicholas Hoult) are suitably sinister with adequate depth; the younger relishing the opportunity
to step up into his own. Local sheriff Ethan Sawyer (Jon Bernthal) and wife Allison (Medina Senghore) are both vulnerable and formidable hostages, using unexpected survival skills typical of the area. The setting is beautiful but dangerous. Whilst keeping one step ahead of the killers, Hannah must escort her young witness across the cold remote landscape under the veil of night against natural threats such as animals, lightning and bush fires. It is odd that Hannah’s trauma is not too obvious; she is introduced happily socialising with her work friends, albeit with a penchant for recklessness. Verdict: While a strong and entertaining action thriller, there is surprisingly little emotional resonance. More weight may have been given to Hannah’s growth if she fully experienced an emotional catharsis. 3 stars. Seen at Palace Electric cinemas. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

Author and journalist Katherine Firkin made a promising entry into Australia’s crime writing ranks with her 2020 debut novel Sticks and Stones. She has now followed it up with the even better The Girl Remains. When human bones are found on a remote Victorian beach, the police suspect that they are the remains of 15-year-old Cecilia May who went missing over 20 years ago following a night out with her two girlfriends. A local registered sex offender confessed at the time to being involved in her disappearance, but was later alibied and released. Now with evidence of Cecilia’s death, the old case is resurrected. What we’re talking about All the latest in fashion, health and beauty. A local street pantry in Ngunnawal offers anything and everything for people doing it tough. Resident Lee Tammy started the Dignity and Desire pantry after noticing a need for women’s and baby products, starting with two fully stocked filing cabinets
on her driveway. She says 10-15 people per day use the pantry for essential items, and she also makes care packs for women and children escaping domestic violence. Head to canberraweekly.com.au for the full story.
This month, Lovekins will match every dollar spent on all purchases of sanitary pads from the website with a donation to Share the Dignity to support women and girls in need. Once Lovekins reaches $10,000 in donations, a ‘dignity vending machine’ that dispenses free sanitary products will be placed within an Australian community that needs it. For more, head to lovekins.com

wellbeing
What is wellness? Wellness and illness are like the North and South Pole on the continuum of wellbeing. The key definition of wellness is that it is more than the absence of disease, so imagine, if you will, that below the ‘equator’ there are increasingly severe levels of disease as you travel south. But what happens as you travel north? Just above the ‘equator’, you may not feel sick. If you went for a check-up you’d get a clean bill of health, yet you may or may not feel well. In this space, modern medicine may have
little to offer because there is not yet a disease to combat. In time, the ‘not feeling well’ can progress to an actual disease but just waiting for that to happen is surely not the best we can do. It’s why many people turn to wellness for answers, because they want to do more than just get by. They want to be engaged with and proactive about their health. Wellness, like illness, is now big business: juice bars, meditation retreats, detox diets, meditation apps etc., are all mainstream success stories and some sceptics bristle at the thought that people turn away from mainstream medicine in the ‘false hope’ of feeling better. However, for increasingly many, the pursuit of wellness is a meaningful one. Albeit, the challenge still remains to navigate through all the options and find something that will really help. How do we know something is helping our wellbeing? Illness can often be measured objectively such as via a blood test or a CT scan. Because it’s measurable, we can see if it’s getting better or worse and, crucially, we can evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention like a drug or surgical procedure. Wellness, on the other hand, is harder to assess. We can’t measure our vitality via a blood test. Wellness is also subjective because we can’t easily measure how I feel compared to how you feel. Ultimately, it comes down to an
WITH WESLEY SMITH DIRECTOR, LIVE WELL SPA & WELLNESS CENTRE MANUKA livewellnaturally.com.au meditatewithwes.com
individual’s own calculation of what they find helpful. We each value those things that are meaningful to us, based on our own experience. Most of us have an internal barometer of how well we are. It may be benchmarked against a time in your life when you remember feeling at your best, for example, when you had more energy, slept well, felt content and had low stress levels. We can be complacent about our wellness, only shocked into action when we actually get sick. Or, we may be jolted by life events; the birth of a child, a new job, a significant birthday. Whatever the reason, when you feel called to reevaluate and improve your wellness, then it’s a moment to celebrate. Editor’s note: Our rotating wellbeing and fitness columns provide information that is general in nature. Growing green on the inside Have you ever considered growing indoor plants but aren’t sure where to start? Or perhaps you have a tortured specimen or two hiding in a neglected corner and are at a loss as to how to love them? Indoor plants brighten up your home, freshen the air and one’s soul, and they are a perfectly valid and healthy obsession. The following tips will help get you hooked, I mean, started:
Environmental requirements Generally, plants used indoors are sub-tropical and/or adapted to bright but not harsh direct sunlight. Many require varying degrees of humidity. A well-ventilated spot with a stable temperature range is key – somewhere with fresh but not gusty air from central heating or cooling vents. Popular spots include windowsills, bathrooms
and any other bright rooms where people can enjoy their beauty. Spacing your plants so foliage isn’t touching helps maintain air circulation and maximise access to light. Turning your pot plants regularly ensures uniform growth.
Potting mixes and pots Indoor plants need a good quality potting mix which has excellent drainage and only moderate levels of fertiliser added. There are a range of indoor specific mixes available. Potting mix should be replaced around every two years as its quality deteriorates over time. Pots suitable for indoor plant use come in an array of colours, types and materials. Self-watering pots are popular, as they come with a water reservoir in the base and reduce the frequency of watering required.
Watering and fertilising The water and fertiliser requirements of indoor plants is considerably less than those grown outside, largely due to lower evaporation and growth rates. As a guide, weekly watering during warmer weather and fortnightly during winter is all that’s needed for most varieties. Wherever practical, take your plants outside to give them a thorough water, including of the foliage. This is more natural and helps remove dust from the leaves. Avoid leaving pots sitting in trays of water as this can cause waterlogging and pest and disease issues, which are detrimental to plant health. Fertilise with controlled release and liquid fertilisers designed for indoor plants. Some other products may be suitable when applied at half the recommended rate.

rare find
canberraweeklyrealestate.com.au
A 1940s find Ainslie 62 Limestone Avenue This 1940s cottage in Ainslie is a rare gem in the sought-after Inner North, having been in the same family for more than 60 years: the family of the late ANU academic and Alliance Française de Canberra president, Helmut Loofs-Wissowa. Close to the city and at the foothills of Mount Ainslie, 62 Limestone Avenue was designed by renowned architect Kenneth Oliphant in 1940. The home has since been renovated and extended in keeping with its original character and charm to include solar panels, hydronic heating, water tanks and double glazing, as well as an updated kitchen and laundry. “The house celebrates the rich history of early builds and honours all that is essential for creating a warm and welcoming family home,” says Ray White Canberra licensed agent, Nicky Symon. “Each room is unique, the attention to detail with tiling, fixtures, stained glass windows, unusual room shapes, natural materials, blend of European and ‘cottage’ styles.” 40
canberraweekly.com.au
Full of character, the formal lounge boasts ornate ceiling detail, and a wood fireplace, while the main bathroom is home to a clawfoot bath and stained glass. There are sash windows throughout, and French doors connect the home’s spaces together. Throughout the four-bedroom home there are pockets of sunshine, especially in the main bedroom, large study and kitchen, with the home’s extension designed to take full advantage of the northerly aspect. In the private gardens, you’ll find mature, established trees and garden beds, Canberra red brick pavers, three sheds and a protected sunroom. Close to all the amenities of the City and the Inner North, such as the ANU, schools and the iconic Ainslie Shops, Symon says this unique home will appeal to a number of buyers. “The ideal buyers are families looking to enjoy the Inner North lifestyle, or potential buyers looking to purchase a home in the prized heritage precinct,” says Symon.

property news
Weekly market wrap Buying off-plan in a rising market Project marketing salespeople see the look of excitement first home buyers have putting a deposit down for what will become their new home, new families have securing their next home, and investors have finding their first, or next investment property. Purchasing off-plan can be seen as an opportunity to own property, participate in the market and start realising the great Australian dream of owning one’s own home or building longterm wealth through property ownership. In Canberra, we are fortunate to have a large proportion of property developers who value their relationship with purchasers and seek to deliver high quality projects. When undertaking the development process, property developers engage specialist teams of leading consultants to assist with managing project risk, including planning, construction, legal, finance, marketing and sales. It is a challenging role described by one highly experienced development consultant as requiring
the skills of a ‘specialist allrounder’. Engaging leading consultants when all parties have positive intent enables higher quality outcomes to be delivered. Having witnessed many times a room full of consultants collaborating to resolve challenges, I can confidently say in most instances Canberrans are fortunate to have a contingent of highly qualified project professionals residing within the Territory. There is, however, a very small minority of participants in this space who have the unenviable track record of taking advantage of naive purchasers. This minority use their financial resources to set up sophisticated corporate structures and contractual arrangements to create the maximum amount of optionality in their favour. To manage complex and sometimes uncontrollable risks, off-plan contracts provided to purchasers generally have timeframes for the developer to secure approvals, pre-sales, financing,
WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST
etc., and commence construction. In the event they fail to achieve what is required, the contract provides a right to rescind and refund the deposit to the buyer. It is uncommon to see developers exercise rescission rights; however, there are some developers who seem to regularly take on overly ambitious projects or ones exceeding their financial capabilities and end up in a position requiring them to rescind contracts. Rescission by the developer can be detrimental for buyers who have exchanged contracts with the belief they had secured a property. Buyers need to do their homework and invest in high quality legal advice to minimise their risk of entering a contract to buy from an unscrupulous developer. Editor’s note: Sam Dodimead is the listing agent for a number of developments with off-plan sales.

Your ability to put your foot in your mouth is not going to help you win friends and influence people this week. The Full Moon on 26 May warns you to be careful of getting jealous or envious of others over money or matters involving the opposite sex.
The Full Moon on 26 May could be a difficult time for you regarding friends, lovers, children or your social life; issues that you have been ignoring in the relationships sector of your chart are about to come into focus. If you’re tempted to stray romantically, think again.
If you meet someone from out of town, especially via social media, by wary about getting involved as long-distance relationships can be problematic. The Full Moon on 26 May indicates that being thrifty is certainly not on your mind and your partner is not happy about it.
The Full Moon on 26 May indicates there may be issues with friends. If so, you’ll need to speak up about things you don’t approve of; there is no point in bottling things up. New relationships begun before 4 June could be confusing and you would be best to wait.

Now is a good time to start a regular exercise routine. The Full Moon on 26 May focuses on closest relationships and you will need to be careful of being overly stubborn and arrogant; failure to do this could create issues with those you value the most.
Some of your friends may be getting at you through their game playing; although they’re charming and persuasive, you know they are not being completely honest. The Full Moon on 26 May indicates issues with loved ones and, if they are being unreasonable, you have every right to more respect.
The Full Moon in your own sign on 26 May connects with Neptune causing a great deal of confusion. You may find other people are cranky, eccentric and almost impossible to pin down. The best thing you can do is to be independent and get on with your own thing.
The Full Moon on 26 May warns you to be careful of treading on the egos of others at work, especially your boss or anyone in a position of authority or influence. Certain issues are now coming to a head and you must deal with them realistically.

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC
The Full Moon on 26 May indicates it’s a bit much when others assume you’ll do what they want; in fact, the more you acquiesce, the more difficult they’ll be to deal with. Instead, show them you have a mind of your own and it will give you self-assurance.
Right now, you can meet any challenge and will be pleased with the way you perform. The Full Moon on 26 May indicates you need to rest and recuperate, otherwise you’re going to be exhausted. Don’t let any worries at the back of your mind keep you awake at night.
The Full Moon on 26 May warns you to be careful of being narrowminded, sexist or racist, which is always good advice, but any such comments made at this time could potentially land you in hotter water than you might have imagined. Take time out for reflection and relaxation.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE The Full Moon on 26 May warns you to be careful of exhaustion and not to overload your schedule. Also, stop putting off an annoying health concern and get yourself to your GP. It is time to become accountable for self-indulgences, whether in wine, chocolate or other treats.

WIN! Cruella (PG) film passes Emma Stone (La La Land) stars in Disney’s Cruella (PG), an all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinema’s most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. Young grifter Estella’s flair for fashion catches the eye of the Baroness von Hellman, a fashion legend, played by Emma Thompson (Howards End, Sense & Sensibility). But their relationship sets in motion a course of events that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, revenge-bent Cruella. Tickets on sale now for the 27 May release. Win one of six double passes to see Cruella at Dendy Canberra Centre.
Enter to WIN To enter, visit canberraweekly.com.au and click on the ‘Entertainment’ tab to ‘Competitions’, find this competition and follow the entry instructions. Entries close 9am Thursday 27 May 2021 and winners drawn same day. One entry per person. Entrants must be aged 18+.
