This week... From the editor Welcome to our fi rst edition of 2018, which, thanks to the magic of technology, pre-planning and a great team, actually went to press before Christmas. Who knew? As a result, I won’t sign off this column with my usual list of seven things to feel grateful for– a practice regular readers will be all too familiar with. But I will take the opportunity to share why this practice began– plus it’s a nice way to kick off the New Year. Scientific research shows that being more grateful can improve your overall sense of wellbeing and life satisfaction The Harvard Medical School defines gratitude as “a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives … As a result, gratitude also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals – whether to other people, nature, or a higher power”. Simply being grateful for being alive is a great way to motive oneself to seize the day. And gratitude can be contagious, in a good way. Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) was onto something when he said: “Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitiude.” Amen to that. - Julie Samaras

The first of 14 light rail vehicles (LRVs) arrived in Canberra in December, marking another milestone for the light rail project. The distinctive red LRVs are being assembled in Spain by Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles, or CAF, the company selected to build the fleet of vehicles. Although extensive testing has already occurred in Spain, the first of Canberra’s LRVs will have to undergo rigorous testing on the rail line that is being built here. For Canberra Metro Engineering Manager – Rail Systems, Adam Versteege, his job won’t end with the arrival of the vehicle. Because the vehicles have been taken apart to be shipped, the first thing that will happen when they arrive at the Mitchell Depot will be to re-assemble the mechanical elements of the LRV and check the connections of all key systems. “That will take a couple of days,” Mr Versteege said. “Then we power the unit up and run a series of tests on the electrical and communications systems. We will run through an exhaustive checklist in the process that will take about four weeks. We’ll
prove that everything is working according to the specifications, and that will ready the vehicle for testing on the track to Gungahlin. That will take another two months or so. “We have to optimise the traction and braking system performance so the ‘jerk rate’ is minimised to assure a smooth ride for customers. At the same time, the regenerative braking system is optimised to improve energy consumption by distributing regenerated power back into the overhead power supply that can be used by other LRVs.” Mr Versteege said testing of the vehicle in situ is a key part of the process of getting the fleet up and running. “The idea is that we need to prove the functional performance of the design under all operating conditions to ensure the LRV conforms to the specifications. That work will include testing traction and braking performance, coupling ability, passenger information and communications systems and will be quite exhaustive.” Once the first vehicle has completed its on-track testing, it will be handed over to operational

crews for use in driver training and operational exercises. The vehicles being built by CAF are part of the company’s URBOS range, widely used by light rail operators throughout Europe and the Americas. Canberra’s fleet is part of the third generation of URBOS vehicles, also being used or on order for networks in Sydney and Newcastle. “The key difference from a customer perspective is in the layout of the passenger saloon,” Mr Versteege said. “The layout of the interior has been changed for Canberra’s fleet. We have two dedicated areas for the storage of bicycles and wheelchairs. It means there are fewer seats in those two cars. They are quite open areas. But there will be plenty of seats
elsewhere and importantly plenty of hand-holds for standing passengers for use during busy periods.” Canberra passengers will also have access to Wi-Fi during their commute, while there is also passenger audio and visual information systems including a public address system, exterior and interior LED displays and hearing loops (specialised transmitters) for the hearing impaired, air conditioning designed for Canberra’s climate, and closed circuit TV surveillance. The livery inside the vehicles is also unique to Canberra. Celebrated indigenous artist, Uncle Jimmy Williams, played a central role in designing the seat fabric. Two more LRVs are scheduled to arrive in Canberra in February.
Trial to fight rare cancers in Canberra Close to 100 patients suffering from rare cancers in the ACT are expected to be recruited for trials of cutting-edge personalised treatment which will start early this year. ACT Health is joining the Molecular Screening and Therapeutics (MoST) clinical trials which will match novel therapies to rare and less common cancer patients based on their individual molecular and genetic makeup. The MoST project identifies 6
optimal therapeutic targets for patients without treatment options by using cutting-edge molecular and genetic analysis of their tumour. New drugs are becoming available which are specific for these therapeutic targets. This leads to higher response rates, fewer side effects and better outcomes than traditional methods. The trial is thanks to a new partnership between the Canberra Region Cancer Centre and world-
class research institute, the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney. “About 30% of cancers diagnosed are rare and less common cancers, and many are currently incurable which means they result in 50% of all cancer deaths,” ACT Minister for Health and Wellbeing Meegan Fitzharris said. The ACT Government will invest $436,000 over three years on the trial, which will provide significant benefits for patients in Canberra.
“Under the trial, eligible patients being treated at the Canberra Regional Cancer Centre will be able to have samples and information submitted to the Garvan Institute for analysis and have potential therapies identified,” Minister Fitzharris said. “The ACT medical community will also benefit from collaborating with a world-class institution in improving patient health outcomes and in attracting high quality clinicians to the ACT.”

news Territory Plan encourages active living principles Canberrans can look forward to a healthier and more active city with active living principles being incorporated into the Territory Plan under Variation 348. Active living describes physical activity being a natural part of people’s daily routine. It means creating a built and natural environment to support active lives. The six active living principles are: connected places, open space, mixed land use and density, safe and attractive places, supportive infrastructure, and environments for all. Tony Stubbs CEO of Heart Foundation ACT commended the ACT Government on making the changes to the Territory Plan, acknowledging that “about half of all Canberrans are not active enough for their health”. He said people should be able to enjoy a tree-lined park, walk to school, ride to work, walk to their shops or a café if they want to – “and it should all be easy. By design. They shouldn’t have to rely on a car”. Places like Kingston Foreshore, Franklin Recreational Park, the suburbs of Forde and Crace, and Southquay Tuggeranong will be the ‘norm’ in terms of setting the benchmark for active living across Canberra. According to Professor Rachel Davey, Director of the Health Research Institute at the University of Canberra, “this has been a long time coming”. As part of the research behind the Active Living Program, Professor
The Territory Plan now incorporates activing living principles that require the creation of a built and natural environment that supports actives lives. Photo: Eva Schroeder.
Davey said: up to 40% of Canberrans felt there were not adequate crossings and signals on busy roads; 25% weren’t satisfied with lighting in their neighbourhood; 40% were not satisfied with the amount of shade in local parks; and one-third were not satisfied with park seating and playgrounds’ cleanliness and safety. Mr Stubbs said the Heart Foundation (ACT) continues to work with the ACT Government to improve the built and natural environment to build a healthier city through the Active Living Program. The program has included research, advocacy, education and now, legislative change. The Heart Foundation ACT will now work with the ACT Government, the community and local industry to promote awareness and the uptake of active living.

Also invoking an earlier time is this mystery set in 1930s Cambridge. A rapist is terrorising the city and several prominent alumni of the university are also being killed in a manner reminiscent of the horror stories of M. R. James. Writer Josephine Tey and Inspector Penrose set out to solve the mysteries behind the attacks before others fall victim. Upson’s clever use of real life mystery writer Josephine Tey as a detective has proven popular with readers and this time she involves Tey in an intriguing mystery set against a well imagined historical Cambridge. An engaging detective story.

More substantial reading is provided by this fascinating and detailed biography of Jann Wenner and the successful rise of Rolling Stone magazine. Drawing from Wenner’s extensive archives and interviews with numerous rock luminaries, such as Mick Jagger, Elton John and Bruce Springsteen, Hagan tells the story of how Wenner captured the 1960s youth culture and turned it into an influential and powerful magazine that also made him very wealthy. Full of interesting revelations and stories, this is an enthralling ‘warts and all’ journey back to the hey-day of meaningful rock and roll and the rise of serious alternative journalism.

Summer book bundles
Voyager, $19.99
Here at the Canberra Weekly, we receive all kinds of goodies from PR agencies, publicists and businesses. This week, we’ve put together 3 x great book bundles, valued at well over $100 each, to give away.
At the end of World War II, the world’s population was devastated by an alien virus. Many of those who survived were either mutated or given super powers. Seventy years later and the world is still a dangerous place, especially for the crew and passengers of the steamer Natchez, whose lives and freedom hang in the balance. Edited by George Martin, this is the 24th book in the Wild Cards universe, and contains six interconnected stories from prominent fantasy and science fiction writers. Each of the entertaining stories provides an intriguing insight into a world with superpowers, and they mesh together into a coherent narrative.
The Wanted by Robert Crais Simon & Schuster, $32.99
Crais’s novels always make for good exciting reading, and his latest about Los Angeles PI Elvis Cole is another high-octane ride. When Tyson Connor’s mother becomes concerned about her normally nerdish son’s change in behaviour and the money she fi nds hidden in his room, she approaches Cole to make sure that he is not involved in something illegal. Cole quickly links Tyson to a string of burglaries, but when the boy goes missing and the bodies start turning up, he realises that something more sinister is at play. A good one to read between dips in the pool.

Things to remember ...
Summer fun
Step away from the screens! Summer holidays are the perfect time to head outdoors for play with family and friends. We’ve found some ideas to help you keep the boredom at bay whether you’re home or away.
This is an edited extract from Camping with Kids by Simon McGrath published by Explore Australia $19.99 and is available in stores nationally.
Outdoor games The Matchbox Challenge How many items from around the campsite can be fitted into an empty matchbox? Naturally, a number of empty matchboxes will be required, together with some imagination. Then challenge the kids to set off around the campsite in search of tiny items to jam inside. Cracking fun In the weeks before the holiday, collect a number of empty cardboard egg boxes and paint each ‘dimple’ (the part in which the eggs sit) a different colour. Each box could have a blue, yellow, red, green, brown and white section, for example. At the campsite, give each of the young children an egg box and challenge them to collect as many different things as they can fi nd that both fit into the dimple and correspond with the colours. 24
Deer stalking This is an old Scout game that’s best played in a small area of trees. One person is the ‘deer’ and heads off into the ‘forest’ to await detection but without hiding or crouching down, though they can occasionally move short distances. The other players need to approach from different directions, ideally using the vegetation as cover, to track down and then gradually stalk the deer. Using sight and sound, the deer looks out for the stalkers and when one is spotted, he or she shouts out and points to their position. If correct, that stalker stands up and the game continues until either all stalkers have been identified or someone has got close enough to tag the deer. A time limit can be set and once that’s reached, all the stalkers need to reveal themselves and identify their positions. The closest to the deer wins. The less time available, the faster the game is played. A variation is to blindfold the deer and play the game on ground that has lots of dry twigs and stones. The deer uses hearing to point in the direction of the stalker. Cricketing capers Cricket is a great team game ideal for families but it needs stumps or at least some sort of wicket. So if you don’t have those, try French cricket instead – it’s fun and fast-paced and the wicket is your legs. You still need a bat or tennis racket and a soft ball such as a tennis ball. The aim is to
score as many ‘runs’ as possible before being bowled or caught out. The batsman stands in the middle and the other players surround him or her as fielders. A person bowls with the aim of hitting the person’s legs with the ball below the knee. When the batsman strikes the ball, he or she accumulates runs by passing the bat around their body, switching hands behind their back. Each time it counts as one run. As soon as the ball is back with a fielder in position, that person then bowls. A batsman can only rotate his or her position when the ball is not in anyone’s hand. So if they are facing the wrong direction, the ball can still be bowled and the batsman must try to defend their legs (and score some runs if they’re lucky). The batting duties change hands when either the legs are hit or the ball is caught.
There are a few items that you really mustn’t forget to pack if you want to play a variety of outdoor games on your camping holiday... A bat and ball: Absolutely essential for rounders, cricket and its French counterpart. Quoits: If you’re looking for some simple but competitive family fun, the game of quoits is suitable for the very young and the very old. It’s even better if they play together. Football: Whether you prefer football or rugby, each family member can practise their own kicking accuracy by using the trees as goal posts. Pen and paper: So that an impartial observer can keep a running score. Prizes: For the winners and runners-up. Remember to reward effort, too, and even consider awarding a booby prize for the person who came last in the most games!
Handy hints... Invent your own games Making up your own games can be a fun activity in its own right. Here’s what to think about: Come up with the concept: How do you win? How long should it take to get to that point? Devise the rules: How many players are involved and what are they allowed to do (and just as importantly, what are they definitely not allowed to do)? Invent a name: Call it something wacky and exciting. What will it need? Can you make any necessary equipment yourself? Try it out: Test it on your friends and family, and fine-tune the concept and rules. Let any new campsite friends know where and when you’ll be playing it. Then enjoy the fun.

The latest news, products and happenings for things around the home. Home security
Recycle your mattress
ACT Policing and Crime Stoppers are reminding the community to think about their home security this summer. Simple measures can often deter intruders, according to Officer in Charge of Belconnen Police Station, Station Sergeant Chris Meagher. “Ensure that all doors and windows are securely locked during the summer months, unless there are adequate security screens in place. If possible, install visible security systems which cover all external doors and windows as this can be an effective deterrent for intruders and thieves.” Report any suspicious activity to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online at act. crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.
In the 2016-17 financial year, there were 706 incidents of mattresses illegally dumped in the ACT, costing the ACT Government around $16,000 in disposal fees alone. In the present financial year, there have been 220 incidents of mattresses illegally dumped so far. It is an offence under the Litter Act 2004 to dump rubbish in a public place and, if caught, the penalties applied could be up to $7,500. Residents can recycle their mattresses through Soft Landing at Hume which stops items going to landfill with almost 90% of mattress components recycled. Soft Landing will come and collect from $30.65 per mattress or they can be dropped off to Soft Landing from $24.

Peter Blackshaw’s starry donation In keeping with the happy holiday spirit, Peter Blackshaw Real Estate has generously handed over a big $41,068.67 cheque to local charity Stella Bella Little Stars Foundation. Launched in 2012 by Suzanne Tunks, Stella Bella Little Stars Foundation helps children in the ACT region who are living with serious longterm illnesses and their families who may be struggling financially while caring for them. In an Australian first, earlier this year the Foundation also opened Stella Bella Children’s Centre in Fyshwick, an all-inclusive childcare facility offering mainstream childcare rooms alongside a specialised respite and occasional care unit for chronically ill children aged 0-5 years. Tunks founded the non-profit organisation following the death of her nine-month-old daughter due to a rare heart condition in 2010. “Peter Blackshaw Real Estate was born and bred in Canberra, and our success comes from this amazing community we are part of and we want to give back,” says the agency’s franchise operations manager Narelle Casey. “We chose Stella Bella Little Stars Foundation because they do an incredible job delivering key services and support to local families in Canberra.”
Guide to ACT Strata Law

Through their ‘workout to help out’ effort which saw offices, clients, friends and family exercising to raise money combined with a $20,000 donation through the Peter Blackshaw Real Estate charitable giving program, the company was able to donate the whopping cheque to the charity. Peter Blackshaw Gungahlin’s charity golf day held in December also raised an additional $22,000, raising the total donation to over $63,000. The agency has raised in excess of $144,000 for the charity since the relationship began in 2014.

Throughout the coming year, Catherine will hear more good news about a loved one, such as the birth of a child or a new romance. It will be a time when she needs to let people go their own way as much as possible. This is a good time not to poke her nose in where it’s not wanted. My favourite things CHAIR “First occupied by eminent mentors Professors Ralph Slatyer, Barry Osmond and Ian Cowan, the chair was bought for Professor Ralph Slatyer when the Department of Environmental Biology was first established. He was my first mentor (other than my father) and advised me to do physics before biology.“
FAMILY “The family is fundamentally the most important element. They buoy you up when things are tough, and keep you realistic when you start getting full of yourself. I enjoy my wider family, too.”
DRYSDALE PAINTING Photo Kierrie Brewer
Graham collaborated with Richard Richards and his CSIRO team who bred a water-efficient wheat variety called Drysdale. Russell Drysdale painted many evocative scenes of drought-ravaged western NSW in the 1940s. This painting is called The Drover’s Wife.
Dr Graham Farquhar 2018 ACT Senior Australian of the Year
Biophysicist Dr Graham Farquhar AO is the 2018 ACT Senior Australian of the Year. After growing up with a Tasmanian farming family background, Graham has used his love of science to deliver practical benefits to the agricultural sector. He has received a string of accolades during his distinguished career for his research examining how water-efficient crops can protect food security in a changing climate. In 2017 he became the first Australian to win a Kyoto Prize – the most prestigious international award for fields not traditionally honoured with a Nobel Prize. From his long-term base at the Australian National University, Graham is tackling some of the most profound challenges facing humanity and the environment. 66
PIE Graham jogs up to the ANU bakery daily to get his favourite pie. “By keeping some aspects of daily life routine, it makes it easier to be adventurous in the research aspects. Many pie wraps have been used to derive mathematical relationships and stimulate lunch-time discussions.”
FARQUHAR LABORATORY The Farquhar Laboratory Team works from ‘The Shed’, while the main building has been gutted and refurbished. “Having to move all our laboratory equipment into unsuitable environments has been a strain, but the team has rallied and developed a rapport, and everybody is helpful to each other, and it has been pretty special.”
