From the editor While this is our second edition of 2018, it’s the first we’ve actually curated this year, our 4 January edition having been sent to print before Christmas so we could enjoy a well-earned two-week break. If you had time off, I hope you enjoyed it; if you didn’t, thanks for working to keep Australia moving forward; and if you’re still on a break, woohoo! New Year is often a time for making resolutions or creating bucket lists to be ticked off. Apparently, one of the secrets to succeeding with resolutions is to make them clearly defi ned and realistic. For example, rather than promising “I’m going to lose weight this year”, it’s better to consider how you’re going to achieve it, such as “I will make healthier food choices” or “I will exercise at least three times a week”. Spot the difference? And if you fall, don’t despair. You can always try again. To help you on your way, we’ve got some smoothie bowl recipes in Taste, fitness and wellbeing tips in The Look, and a Fresh Start feature on pages 19-23. Enjoy! Recent reasons to be grateful include downtime, refreshing ocean dips at Umina, seeing some stellar fi lms (including The Greatest Showman and Coco), a few good reads, turning off the alarm (and turning it back on this week), social-media-free days, and returning to a job I relish. - Julie Samaras

news 105,000 attend horsepower party Despite the hot conditions, over 105,000 attendees enjoyed the sights and sounds of Summernats 31 which was held at Exhibition Park in Canberra from 4 to 7 January. The event attracted 2,135 cars – the second highest number of entrants in its history – which Summernats co-owner Andy Lopez said bodes well for the future of Summernats. And, while there is a growing representation of women and families at Summernats, Mr Lopez said they will continue work to ensure it is an inclusive event. “We’re happy with the additional

measures we put in place this year, but we know change doesn’t happen overnight,” he said. “We will continue to work hard to make the Summernats safe for everyone who attends.” Saturday was the busiest day of the festival with around 40,000 people in attendance and overall Mr Lopez was pleased with the turnout given the conditions. Maximum temperatures steadily increased across the four-day event from 30oC on the Thursday, to 34oC on Friday, 37oC on Saturday and 41oC on Sunday. “Our team had prepared for the

Concerns were raised about air conditioning not working in the pavilions for the duration of the event with Mr Lopez acknowledging that there was one pavilion that did have an air conditioning problem “but the venue operators at EPIC brought in external air conditioning units to address the issue”. “Given the extreme conditions, obviously air conditioning

systems were working hard throughout the weekend across the venue, however we understand there were no other issues of note.” ACT Policing’s Station Sergeant Matt Reynolds said “overall crowd behaviour was good with few incidents of note”. While revellers were generally well behaved during the event, ACT Policing arrested one person for driving under the influence of alcohol, one person for driving under the influence of drugs and one male for being intoxicated and disorderly. - Allison Turnbull

Better solar access for low income households in the ACT A new solar program is set to help low income household save $300 to $900 a year on energy costs. Announced in December, the Actsmart Solar for Low Income Program has received $2 million in funding over four years to provide greater support to eligible ACT households to invest in rooftop solar panels to help reduce their energy costs, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The program is available to home owner occupiers who are in possession of an Australian Government pensioner concession card. A cost benefit analysis will be undertaken for each household participating based on electricity consumption and household composition. All solar panels in the program are Clean Energy Council certified and have a 25-year performance warranty. Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Shane Rattenbury said “the beauty of this program is it breaks the barrier for people of the upfront cost”. “Often people can’t afford that initial capital 6

so this scheme providing a subsidy and a loan that can be paid back from the savings makes it possible for all households to access solar.” Mr Rattenbury said over the next three years, participants will be offered a rebate of up to 60% on costs for the supply and installation of a rooftop solar photovoltaic system. The subsidy will also cover upgrades for a switchboard and smart meter if required. Participants will have access to an interest-free loan to pay back the remaining installation costs over three years. For homeowner Corrine Phillips, the installation of solar panels meant being able to use the air conditioner this summer as in previous years they could not afford it. “Everybody should get solar. I think that this country is eminently suited to it … and this scheme just makes it affordable for those of us who otherwise just couldn’t get there,” she said, while adding that it also offers a sense of security. “We read in the press how electricity prices are going to keep rising and that frightens me, so this

does give me peace of mind because it futureproofs me for those electricity price rises.” The ACT Government also announced a new partnership with ActewAGL Retail as part of the Energy Efficiency Improvement Scheme (EEIS), which will help low income households reduce their energy consumption and save money on gas and electricity bills. An ACT Government spokesperson said the partnership will improve the energy efficiency of 200 public houses by replacing old, inefficient heaters with better systems, achieving lifetime bill savings of approximately $2.5 million. Since being implemented in 2013, the EEIS has helped more than 70,000 Canberra households and businesses reduce energy bills and emissions, including more than 17,800 priority low income households. news 2017 ACT road toll lowest in years The ACT recorded its lowest road toll figure in 2017 with five fatalities for the year, according to ACT Policing figures. The figure included three persons who were the driver/passenger in a car, one person who was a cyclist and one who was a motorcyclist. Based on data from 2000 to 2017, there have been only two other calendar years where the ACT road toll has been under 10 – in 2013 (seven) and 2011 (six). The 2017 result is an improvement on 2016 where 10 people died on ACT roads, however ACT Policing said they would prefer to see the road toll at zero. In many circumstances, ACT Policing said the difference between a fatal collision and an injury/ non-injury collision is a matter of centimetres in relation to how a vehicle or person collides with another road user or object. While the road toll focuses on fatalities, ACT Policing attends serious injury collisions much more regularly, which also have a traumatic impact on the community.

ACT Policing is currently investigating a single vehicle road fatality which occurred on Yarra Glen on Tuesday 2 January but will likely be included in the 2018 road toll. Meantime, ACT Policing expressed disappointment with driver behaviour over the festive season. Operation Safe Christmas/New Year was conducted between Friday 22 December 2017 and Monday 1 January 2018 with ACT Policing issuing 297 infringements during the Double Demerit period, the majority of these being related to excessive speed. This included: 172km/h in 80km/h zone on Drakeford Drive, 155km/h in 60km/h zone on Springvale Drive (residential street), 106km/h in 60km/h zone in Aranda, and 150km/h in 100km/h zone on the Majura Parkway (driver also charged with drug driving). Detective Acting Station Sergeant Marcus Boorman said “while most drivers are doing the right thing, it is frustrating that some show a blatant disregard for not only their own safety

In addition to numerous speeding infringements, the Traffic Operations Team conducted 9,000 Random Breath Tests resulting in the apprehension of 20 drink drivers and 108 Random Drug Tests from which 27 drivers tested positive to prohibited substances. news Major intersection closure for light rail works The Federal Highway and Flemington Road intersection will be temporarily closed to northbound traffic until 25 January to allow for important light rail works. During these works, there will be no northbound traffic on Federal Highway between Phillip Avenue and Flemington Road, and on Flemington Road between Federal Highway and Randwick Road. The closure will also prevent right turns from the Federal Highway onto Flemington Road. Traffic travelling southbound towards the city on the Federal Highway will remain unaffected. Detours will be in place to divert all traffic including buses. Traffic travelling north from Canberra to Sydney will detour along Antill Street or Phillip Avenue; traffic travelling north to Gungahlin will detour via the Barton Highway and Randwick Road or Gungahlin Drive. In other light rail news, the ACT Government has refined the two route options for stage two of the city-wide light rail network linking Gungahlin through Canberra city to the Woden Town Centre. The City – Parkes – Woden route (Option 1) is largely the same as the route published for consultation earlier last year. The City – Barton – Woden route (Option 2) has been amended slightly following technical analysis to enable more Canberrans to get to work in the Parliamentary Triangle and improve access for visitors. It would also be Canberra’s first light rail route with a section that doesn’t follow a current road. A government decision on the preferred route will be made this year. Further consultation will take place on the exact stop locations once the preferred route has been determined.

Five local aspiring teenage inventors have been selected to attend a cutting-edge national convention run by Questacon in Canberra from 15 to 19 January. Elizabeth Drew, 15, Robert Butler, 14, Bridget Shelley, 14, Catharina Schranz, 15, and Imogen Brewer-De Nicola, 17, from Canberra and Queanbeyan will join 20 other young Australians from across the country to participate in the National Questacon Invention Convention (NQIC). The five-day convention will offer the inventors a hands-on peek into innovation and entrepreneurship. Ms Drew says it’s an amazing opportunity to meet like-minded people and work with some of Australia’s leading innovators and entrepreneurs. The NQIC will consist of workshops where the young inventors will develop their creative design and innovation skills.

Hill bound for Carrera Cup Canberra racing driver Cameron Hill has announced he will undertake a full-time campaign in the 2018 Wilson Security Carrera Cup Australia series. The 21 year old said, when looking at options for this year, the Carrera Cup was the standout category for a number of reasons. “Everyone recognises Porsche as a brand synonymous with upmarket sports cars and all the cars in Carrera Cup are identical – the results genuinely come down to driver ability,” Hill said. “Another strong aspect is the pathways it can create – drivers who have been successful in Carrera Cup

Active living to reduce dementia Early results from a new study led by the Australian National University (ANU) indicate that people aged in their 60s and early 70s could lower their risk of dementia if they maintained a healthy weight by going to the gym to retain muscle mass. Lead researcher Dr Marnie Shaw, from the ANU Research School of Engineering, said about one in 10 Australians aged 65 years and older will get dementia. “As our population ages, the number of people with dementia will increase, but an active lifestyle offers real opportunities for reducing dementia risk,” Dr Shaw said. The researchers observed about 400 people aged in their 60s and early 70s from Canberra at several different stages over time. Dr Shaw said the study was the first to show that the relationship

between body mass index (BMI) and brain shrinkage changed from midlife to older age. Research evidence has linked brain shrinkage to the onset of dementia. “Preliminary results from our research indicate that it’s important for people in later years to go to the gym to maintain a healthy weight and not lose their muscles,” Dr Shaw said. The other main risk factors for dementia include midlife obesity, physical inactivity, smoking, hypertension and depression. ANU collaborated with the University of NSW on the research, which is published in the International Journal of Obesity. This research is part of a larger study, called the 2sweet project, which is led by Associate Professor Nic Cherbuin at the ANU Research School of Population Health.

Boundless playground back in action Canberra’s first all abilities playground, ‘Boundless’, has reopened following completion of its final stages of construction. The playground was closed for just over three months for construction and now has a new giant slide, a sensory garden and extended sun shading for the whole family to enjoy. The Boundless Buddies program resumed on Monday 8 January. It is a free program run by Marymead every Monday 10-11.30am, including public holidays. The Boundless playground is located at Kings Park on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin.

time out Inviting kids to be seen and heard A family outing on a summer’s day is a time cherished and remembered by all involved, so for parents on the lookout for an engaging fun time or a way to whittle down a hot afternoon, the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD) at Old Parliament House has you covered with their family exhibition, PlayUP – The Right to Have an Opinion and be Heard. Wander through the magnificent building, steeped in history yet often forgotten by locals, to find the exhibition that presents a good time full of opportunities for interactivity and education in disguise. MoAD’s third iteration of PlayUP is grounded in Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child – the right for children to have an opinion and for it to be listened to and taken seriously by adults. This manifests itself throughout PlayUP,

as each space houses a different part of the exhibition’s collection of eclectic elements that include retro communication technologies, listening pods and a roleplay Kindness Café alongside a fuzzy felt wall and craft activities. Nanette Louchart-Fletcher, creative producer at MoAD, says PlayUP has an educational grounding in communication for kids. “It also makes you think about what it means to be a good listener, and goes through how kids can frame their opinions in different ways,” she says. “It’s filled with different ways of engaging with that article 12, but all in really fun ways.” Speaking with Louchart-Fletcher, the meticulous detail that’s gone into the design of this exhibition becomes apparent. “We’re trying to have a really rich and layered engagement; you can sit at a level where you

MoAD director Daryl Karp says PlayUP nurtures curiosity and thoughtfulness in children through play-based learning. “PlayUP celebrates the role of children in our community and provides a welcoming environment for families to learn about and participate in democratic processes through imagination, roleplay and discovery,” she says. A young P.T. Barnum labours as an apprentice tailor to his father, working for the upper class. By doing so, Barnum meets and falls in love with Charity, and resolves to win her heart. Flashing forward years later, the married couple are living a very modest and humble life with their two young daughters. That is until Barnum (now played by Hugh Jackman) is laid off from his clerk job, and takes a chance on himself to finally provide the life he promised to his wife (Michelle Williams) and family. From the get-go, the movie grabs you by all your senses and never lets go. We see an adult Barnum under circus bleachers ready to hit the stage in a moment of quiet introspection, and then go tumbling back to where it all began. From Barnum’s origins, we empathise with his want for recognition from a class who refused him and his father. By accepting the insulting labels thrown at him, Barnum establishes his own identity and destiny as a circus showman, celebrating those who are different from the norm by putting them literally on pedestals for the paying audiences who once shunned them. The rags-to-riches Dickens-like tale is told on a lavish background of classic circus props and performances that push the various art forms’ boundaries which include singing, dancing and acrobatics. Verdict: An absolutely uplifting and joyful experience. A cynic would call such a movie a shallow, cheesy piece of fluff. Well, welcome to the circus! 5 stars. - Luke McWilliams

Finding a way to thank his Auntie Lucy for sending him to London in the first place, Paddington spots a beautiful antique pop-up book to give to her for her 100th birthday. Paddington 2 is a charming tale that reflects To afford the book, however, the tone of the original Paddington Bear Paddington soon takes up a series children’s books. of odd jobs, catching the eye of Phoenix Buchanan (Hugh Grant), a charming but narcissistic faded actor looking for a great sum of money to get back into the game … 2014’s Paddington was received very well, with critics lauding its slapstick humour, warm heart and charm. While it served as somewhat of an origin story, describing how the bear comes to Paddington Station in the first place, the central premise involved Nicole Kidman’s taxidermist character wanting to kidnap Paddington Bear to add to her collection. Pretty grim stuff. The slapstick humour was also cranked to 11, bordering on irritation. Whereas P1 seemed to play to a slightly jaded audience wishing for Pixar paced bombastic humour, P2 levels things out with a confidence to stick closer to the tone of the original Paddington Bear children’s books. There are cameos aplenty which please without distracting, exquisite set-design and fashion, all forming a charming tale that pays homage to the heart and soul of Paddington Bear. Verdict: A brilliant production for both children and adults that delivers a tale of a single person changing the hearts of others for the better. 5 stars. - Luke McWilliams

The most popular books and DVDs requested out of the 2.74 million borrowed items from ACT public libraries in 2017 were recently revealed. Do you know your mortgage interest rate?

Borrowers who don’t want to miss out on savings are advised to review their mortgage at least once a year.

A remarkable 38% of Australian’s don’t know their current interest rate on their mortgage, according to Mortgage Choice’s Australian Financial Savviness Whitepaper. According to the white paper, 36.9% of those aged between 30 and 39 do not know their interest rate on their mortgage, compared to 46% of those over the age of 60. “A home loan is one of the biggest financial investments a person will make in their lifetime. If they don’t review it on a regular basis, they could end paying a lot more than they should,” sais Mortgage Choice CEO John Flavell. With many lenders regularly making adjustments to the interest rates on their owneroccupied and investment home loan products,

Flavell says failing to regularly review your interest rates could cost you substantially long term. “In the past two years the cash rate has been reduced by 50 basis points and a huge portion of this has been passed onto mortgage holders in the form of lower rates. As such, anyone who hasn’t reviewed their mortgage in the past two years could find that the interest rate on their home loan is significantly higher than it needs to be,” says Flavell. “Slight changes can make a significant difference to what a borrower has to pay each month. Those borrowers who don’t want to miss out on savings are advised to review their mortgage at least once a year.”

Improved housing affordability attracts first home buyers

Housing affordability has improved nationwide and there has been a significant increase in the number of loans to first home buyers, according to the September quarter edition of the Adelaide Bank/Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) Housing Affordability report. According to the report, first home buyers now make up 24.5% of the total owner occupied housing market, increasing by 22.8% for the quarter and 32.6% over 12 months.

The national professional association for Australia’s real estate sector, the REIA provides advice to the Federal Government, Opposition, members of the real estate sector and the general public on issues affecting the Australian property market.
