This week... From the editor Last week, I felt privileged to experience The Season, a ‘deadly’ comedy on stage at The Playhouse. It’s about an Indigenous Australian family, the Duncans, coming back to roost on Dog Island for the mutton bird season, a tradition that goes back as long as anyone can remember. There was a lot to like about this play: it’s funny and irreverent (the visual of Trevor Jamieson in Australian Aboriginal Flag undies cannot be unseen); it’s about family secrets (who is without skeletons in the closet?), love and bonds that stretch and fray; and, other than seeing Bangarra Dance Theatre once a year, it’s one of the rare occasions I’ve heard Indigenous Australian stories expressed live on stage, albeit in English. It’s whet my appetite for more. Reasons to feel gratitude this past week include an elevating theatre experience at the opening night of The Season, a sneak peek of Floriade at last Friday’s media preview, a great mini road trip and company over complimentary lunch at the new-look Yass Hotel (the vegan pumpkin risotto with hazelnuts was delicious and my companion’s steak and vegetables was ‘worth going back for’), and an uplifting afternoon at the Sweet ChariTea high tea raising funds for young patients at Canberra Hospital. Congratulations to all the volunteers, sponsors and supporters involved in this unique event. - Julie Samaras

news Floriade opens with a ‘pop’ Canberra’s famous flower festival flung open its gates to the public on Saturday 15 September, marking what many ACT residents would consider to be the unofficial arrival of spring. With warm, dry temperatures, Floriade’s opening weekend did not disappoint. Floriade’s Executive Producer Vickii Cotter said the opening weekend had been “really well attended”, with a great amount of people – particularly families – making their way through the floral displays. “It’s been really well attended; we don’t have the official number yet but it was a great weekend. “It was a really beautiful weekend”. Ms Cotter said historically the

festival has seen around 400,000 visitors attend over the month-long period, and they are hoping to achieve that number again this year. “If we keep having this amazing weather, people will come out,” she said. “It’s just so nice to see everybody sitting down and just enjoying the spaces. The food has proved popular with the crowds so far, provided by Pialligo Estate in the main pavilion, and local providers in the surrounding tents, including donuts that “inspire a lap of the park” after eating. “There’s a whole array of food that you are able to eat and indulge in.” Despite the many other activities on offer, Ms Cotter said the flowers are still the main attraction. “The garden beds are the hero

with the icons of pop culture, with Where’s Wally, Ken Done, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Grug and Superhero Alley,” Ms Cotter said. “I saw someone dressed up as Marilyn Monroe yesterday and it was so exciting.” The Floriade team are now preparing for the busiest period of the festival, the ACT school holidays and the commencement of NightFest on Wednesday 26 September. “School holidays is going to be fantastic; those two last weeks of Floriade are going to be amazing, all

the flowers will be in full bloom as well,” Ms Cotter said. Tickets are selling fast for NightFest, the event program with different entertainment each night proving popular. “It’s got that whole different feel when you come to the park at night,” Ms Cotter said. Dangerous dog legislation back in focus The Canberra Liberals have presented an exposure draft of new animal welfare laws to the ACT Legislative Assembly with the aim of establishing “clear and simple accountability measures after a dog attack” in the ACT. Shadow Minister for Urban Services Nicole Lawder says the Liberals believe better laws are required to protect humans and their pets. “I have heard from many victims and witnesses to dog attacks who are concerned at how little is done after a dog attack. “I have seen grief turn to anger when they learn that attacking dogs are let back into the community, and their owners are let off the hook,” Ms Lawder says. The exposure draft of the Domestic Animals (Dangerous Dogs) Legislation Amendment Bill 2018 will 6

propose laws that require: a registrar must investigate complaints of dog attacks that cause significant injury or death of a person or domestic animal; a dog that seriously injures or kills a domestic animal must be impounded during the course of an investigation; investigations are documented; complainants, dog owners and the Minister are advised of the outcome of an investigation within 14 days of completing an investigation; and that if a dog is not destroyed, the registrar must issue a control order and declare a dog dangerous. The Independent Review into Management of Dogs in the ACT, which was delivered to the ACT Government in April and released publicly earlier this month, states the most effective way to reduce dog attacks is through prevention. “Experts recognise that the

majority of dog attacks could be prevented through responsible pet ownership and/or changes in human behaviour when interacting with dogs,” the review states. “There is a well understood correlation between dogs who are not responsibly managed, cared for, or controlled and the instance of dog attacks.” The review calls for a “sophisticated approach” in assessing and responding to attacking and harassing dogs and advises the ACT Government to not introduce breed-specific legislation. “This approach should ensure discretion in decision making and consider a number of factors on a case-by-case basis. Considerations should include whether the dog was reasonably provoked (e.g. invasion of yards by other animals). “Attacks to humans should be

assessed based on the severity of injury and individual circumstance.” In a response to the review, the ACT Government’s Transport Canberra and City Services Directorate states they will work towards developing the ‘Canberra model’ of dog management by working with and understanding the drivers of the Canberra community when it comes to pet ownership. Of the review’s 34 measures, they agree with 22, agree in principal with six, and have noted six. ACT Minister for City Services Chris Steel’s office was contacted for comment, but had not provided a response at the time of going to press. capital hill Listening with a tin ear ur latest Prime Minister, Scott Morrison, has pledged he will be listening to the people. He wants to “get on with it” and talk about the sorts of things concerning Australians. One might cynically ask, “isn’t that the job description anyway for our elected governments?” It certainly suggests that the one we elected in 2016 hasn’t been listening well enough. Why else would Turnbull have been dumped? The theory is, if a party wants to be elected as the majority party of government it should form policies the people want. On the other hand, leadership also requires convincing the electorate that the policies it is pursuing are in their best interests. We are lucky in Australia that we have a contestability of ideas. By that, I mean one party puts something up

and the other party can and often does argue that it is a bad idea. We then get to choose. Either party, however, has to be broadly in touch. Even though Scott Morrison can’t say it, a majority of the Liberal Party room judged the direction Malcolm Turnbull was taking the government was “out of touch”. But there is strong evidence that Turnbull was out of touch not with a majority of Australians but with the hard-line conservatives in his midst. The best example is marriage equality. Always a proponent of it, Turnbull was stymied by Tony Abbott’s Liberal and Nationals allies. One of the leading conservatives, Peter Dutton, suggested the voluntary plebiscite as a way of killing off gay marriage. In the end the “yes” vote was highest in some of the most “conservative” electorates in the country including Abbott’s.

Then there was the humiliating rejection by these same internal forces of every attempt Turnbull made to come up with an energy policy that would deliver reliability, affordability and emission reductions; a policy that takes doing something about climate change seriously while dealing with the other human-induced crisis – a privatised energy market gouging consumers. Last week, two more opinion surveys found close to 70% of Australians wanted the government to deal with climate change by reducing emissions. Rather than listen to what mainstream Australia wants, the Morrison Government has completely caved in to the denialist lobby in its midst. This utterly baffles former Liberal leader John Hewson. He told ABC radio: “In politics, if you

get a broad base, say a majority community support for a policy, you grab it by both hands and move as fast as you can to implement it.” This failure to listen is also evident in the Liberal Party’s “boys’ club” image as it denies women greater representation in parliament. And then there’s the shameful treatment of refugees on Manus and Nauru. Is it little wonder that the independent candidate for Turnbull’s old seat of Wentworth, Dr Kerryn Phelps, is standing on his thwarted platform? She says she is going for the “sensible centre”. Scott Morrison should turn up his hearing aid and do the same.

news ACT commits to zero-emission vehicles The ACT Government has signed an international declaration committing the Territory to take “concrete steps” towards accelerating the transition to low-emission vehicles. ACT Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Shane Rattenbury attended the first Zero Emissions Vehicles Summit in Birmingham, United Kingdom, and signed the Birmingham Declaration on behalf of the ACT Government. The Birmingham Declaration commits participating governments to “build a smart infrastructure network, support zero-emission research and development investment to create new zero-emission technologies and promote a sustainable, circular economy to drive down emissions throughout the supply chain”. Key signatories include the UK, Denmark, Netherlands, France, Barbados, Poland, Italy, Portugal and United Arab Emirates. Minister Rattenbury said reducing emissions from transport is crucial in tackling climate change and requires action on a “local, national and global scale”. “With transport expected to create over 60% of

the ACT’s emissions by 2020, mostly from private car use, we are strongly committed to reducing greenhouse gases by encouraging active travel, providing high quality low-emissions public transport options and transitioning to zeroemissions vehicles.” The ACT Government released an Action Plan earlier this year, outlining steps to support the “rapid uptake” of zero-emissions vehicles in Canberra. These include financial incentives for registration and purchase of no-emissions vehicles, requirements for new developments to install vehicle charging infrastructure, the review of parking and traffic regulations to ensure priorities are offered to zero-emissions vehicles, and transitioning the ACT Government’s vehicle fleet to zero-emissions vehicles from 2020-21. In Waiting for the Green Light, a report published by the Climate Council of Australia, local governments and councils are encouraged to take the lead on lowering transport emissions. Recommendations include a transport action plan, providing infrastructure for pedestrians and electric vehicles, and encouraging and providing

incentives for active and sustainable travel. news Bikes providing independence Girls on Bikes, a Canberrabased NGO, is mobilising migrant and refugee women in the ACT by providing a free learn to ride program. Bike riding enables independence, mobility, fitness and strength, according to Girls on Bikes founder Sophie Fisher. “It’s something that most of us learn at a young age, but if you don’t have the opportunity to learn then, sometimes you never get another chance,” she says. “Girls on Bikes started because bike riding has brought so much benefit to my life, particularly here in Canberra, and I wanted to create a safe and supportive space where women from migrant and refugee backgrounds could have that chance to learn to ride and meet new people.” Now in its second year, the program is based on the Cycle

Well program from Girls on Bikes’ principal partner Pedal Power, and runs for five weeks. At the end of the program, participants are provided with a helmet and protective gear from Trek Bicycles and a free bike donated by the community and the Canberra Environment Centre, serviced by Goodspeed. “The response to the program has been fantastic. Our next program is almost completely full; many women have been recommended by friends and family who have previously completed the program. We have also had great support from the community,” Ms Fisher says. “The sense of community that has grown within the program is really special too. Our participants and volunteers become fast friends.” “This year, through an ACT Government grant, a number of past participants and volunteers

With spring now upon us, Canberrans are urged to be aware that we’re in the midst of magpie swooping season. Director of ACT Parks and Conservation Service Daniel Iglesias said the majority of magpies will not be prone to swooping. “If a magpie feels threatened by an intruder, swooping is a defensive method for them to protect their young. Magpies are quite intelligent and will remember colours and noises which they associate with danger,” he said. “If a magpie feels threatened, its instinct will be to swoop the intruder. When people harass magpies, it

encourages increasingly aggressive behaviour.” ACT Parks and Conservation Service recommends simple precautions to help avoid being swooped that include: walking quickly through magpie territory; taking alternative routes; wearing hats, helmets, glasses or taking an umbrella; keeping domestic animals on leash; maintaining eye contact; and to demount and walk bikes through magpie territory. Some fast facts: swooping behaviour mostly occurs between August and November; it’s almost always the male that does the swooping; the swooping is usually 100 metres around the nest tree and will last around six weeks; the swooping intensifies as the chicks grow and usually stops when they leave the nest; and only about 10% of magpies swoop at people. Lifesavers on alert With many Canberrans heading to the coast, beachgoers looking to make the most of a warm start to spring are being urged to take water safety seriously with volunteer surf lifesaving patrols still more than a week away. The warning follows the release of the National Coastal Safety earlier this month, which highlights a number of NSW-specific trends. NSW again accounted for a significant percentage of coastal drownings after 39 people lost their lives during 2017/18. The data for NSW identifies the most at-risk groups are men (89% of total drownings), swimmers aged 20-29, and rock fishers between the ages of 40 and 45. While the fatalities are overwhelmingly male, there was a spike in the number of women who drowned last season with seven deaths recorded. A continuing concern for surf lifesavers is that almost two-thirds of fatal incidents occurred less than 1km from a lifesaving service but outside the patrolled area. Almost half of the coastal drownings this season occurred between the hours of 12pm and 6pm. Beachgoers are encouraged to always swim between the red and yellow patrol flags, and to find their nearest patrolled beach via the BeachSafe app or website.

cover story Canberra Moon Festival grows An ancient Chinese celebration centred on gathering and communion, the Moon Festival has been widely embraced by Canberrans since the festival’s first local iteration in 2016. Project Director Suzana Li told Canberra Weekly this year’s festivities will span over three days, from Friday 21 September through to Sunday 23 September at Exhibition Park in Canberra. “On Friday we’ll have a crazy costume party night with three contests – cultural costume, manga style, or creative and fun style … then there’ll be karaoke,” she said.

Saturday’s schedule will consist of a wide array of cultural performances including dragon dance, Peking opera and much more. Sunday’s centerpiece is a talent show to be judged by rising star Lucy Sugerman, Canberra music stalwart Andrew Ricard, and Air Music Australia’s founder Woody Wang. They’re also setting out to grab a slice of history by attempting to set the Australian record for the largest moon cake, with the current record of 70.5kg, 73cm wide and 13cm deep set at the Cabramatta Moon Festival in 2015. A great night for a great cause

Having started three years ago as a unique offering in Canberra’s comedy landscape, the Fearless Comedy Gala has gone on to establish itself as a magnificent night where comedians and the community rally against family violence. Founder Juliet Moody says each year the gala event keeps growing. “It started as a small group of volunteers with a dream … We wanted people to become fearless and stand up to family violence,” she says. “Each year we try and grow the event, we want to make it a real celebration of being fearless, we want to make it a real fun experience for the audience.” She says while comedy and family violence seem an unlikely mix, comedy was the thing that grew Moody back into herself after her own experience. “It helped me bring back my identity, my confidence and sense of purpose. “Family violence impacts right across the board, and so therefore we should be talking about this in every arena – sports, politics and mainstream media and comedy. “For us, it’s about using comedy to shed a

light on it; we’re not using it as material but as a platform … it’s really exciting that Canberra’s got behind this event. “We thought why not use this as an event for people to stop and think ‘what can I be doing to prevent this in my community’,” she says. This year’s gala will be comedian Dane Simpson’s third time with Fearless; he says he got on board initially because it was a great experience for him as an up-and-coming comic at the time. “For somebody at the level I was at the time to be sharing the stage with those incredible comedians was phenomenal.” He says the gala brings together a group of comedians that represent a broad range of skills and time in the industry. “Everybody’s style is very different and they’re all very good at what they do, which makes doing an event like this very exciting.” The Fearless Comedy Gala will be held at Canberra Theatre on Thursday 4 October 7.30pm; canberratheatrecentre.com.au - Denholm Samaras

news Healthier choices for Canberra As many Canberrans are leading busy lives, the familiar sound of “we’re hungry” when we’re out and about with the kids often starts a challenging search to find healthier food and drinks. Not only is there lots of conflicting advice about what’s healthier, most of us don’t have time to be reading nutrition labels. A recent survey found 60% of Canberrans said they were concerned about the marketing of unhealthy food and drinks to children, with overwhelming support for businesses to promote healthier options. The ACT Government’s Healthier Choices Canberra (HCC) initiative is taking the guesswork out of eating well when you’re out and about. The initiative will see Canberrans offered healthier food options in supermarkets, clubs, cafes, kids’ entertainment centres and hospital cafes. It is all about making it easier to find tasty, fresh and healthier foods in places often frequented by families and children. You can easily find healthier options on kids’ menus where there’s a ‘HC’ icon, or on the green Healthier Choices Canberra shelf tickets in supermarkets.

Kids’ menu options are a large focus of the initiative, with participating businesses changing up their menus to offer healthier kids’ meals and meal deals. Jeremy Wilson, Secretary Manager at the RUC in Turner, says their new ‘good intentions’ menu will have more salads and seafood and healthier kids’ meals. “We’re trying to broaden the range for them,” he says. “We’ll have healthier sides options, and the free drink that comes with the kids’ meals won’t be soft drink.” Let’s Play in Nicholls and Mega Bites at Questacon will both be participating in the program. Let’s Play Manager Ali McGregor says the kids’ entertainment venue has always had healthier food options, and the HCC program is a great way to showcase them. “We see that kids often want a healthier option and until now haven’t been encouraged to take it,” she says. “[Mega Bites] is a venue that mostly serves tourists and kids, and there is definitely a demand for healthier options,” says Manager Ashley Morrisey. Taking on a gutsy challenge In 1996, local Canberra woman Sarah McGoram was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST), and was given only 12 months to live. Twenty-two years later, she will run 10km with a group of friends to raise awareness and funds for digestive cancer research. When Sarah was first diagnosed, little was known about her disease and there were few treatments available. She says that she has beaten the odds so far thanks to the development of new treatments and being able to participate in clinical trials; she is “riding the wave of medical research”. “This wave has given me more than just treatment options. It has allowed me to have a

healthy and fulfilling life.” Sarah has used her experience to benefit others, becoming a strong advocate for better treatments and improving the patient experience when dealing with a digestive cancer diagnosis. In support, she is taking on a 10km Canberra fun run with friends Jenifer, Maggie, Ange and Vik. But the group has another reason for their commitment to fighting digestive cancers. In December last year, Jenifer, who is in her 40s with three primary school aged children, was diagnosed with stage three bowel cancer. “It came as a huge shock for someone who otherwise thought they were pretty fit and healthy, having completed the Canberra Half Marathon only eight months before

being diagnosed,” Sarah says. “In order to help Jen through her treatment, we all decided we’d sign up for a ‘Gutsy Challenge’ to compete in at the end of it. It has given her something to ‘train for’ to get through the hard times.” Jen has spent the past 12 months fighting her cancer, recovering from surgeries and managing chemotherapy. She and Sarah have trained at the gym throughout their treatments, to keep their minds and bodies as strong as possible to fight their digestive cancers. Both Sarah and Jen know the devastating impact of digestive cancers, which is why they are dedicated to raising awareness and much-needed funds for research conducted by the GI Cancer Institute. The group hopes that their

Be The Best You Can Be Sports Day: Around 350 ACT school students with a disability got out to the AIS Track and Field Facility to take part in the Be The Best You Can Be Sports Day on Tuesday 18 September. The carnival involved students from over 15 Canberra primary schools, high schools and colleges. The students participated in a rotation of modified activities including sprints, long jump, soccer, basketball, a modified rugby program, rugby league and an obstacle course. Tennis: Bruce Larkham and Thomas Charles Boag have been inducted into the Tennis ACT Walk of Fame on Saturday 15 September at the 2018 Tennis ACT Awards. Larkham was the first Canberran to travel to Europe to play competitively; competing in the Wimbledon qualifying singles and mixed doubles main draw. Boag established himself as one of the best players in the ACT during the 1930s and played a pivotal role in the development of Reid Tennis Club, where he was secretary for several years, then stood as president for 12 years, and was later declared a life member. Raiders: The Canberra NRL team’s major sponsor Huawei, earlier this month donated $31,875 to the Ricky Stuart Foundation for money raised during this year’s #AutismWellbeing round at GIO Stadium. The total from this year’s efforts brings the fundraising initiative to a grand total of $91,310 over the past three seasons. Huawei has helped use the annual fixture to raise awareness of the #AutismWellbeing message by giving up their regular position on the front of the Raiders specially designed jersey to help promote the initiative.

Brumbies: A number of off-season signings over the past few weeks include youngsters Bayley Kuenzle, Tom Ross and Noah Lolesio, all of whom have joined the side’s wider playing squad. Korean beef tacos Recipe courtesy of HelloFresh [hellofresh.com.au] Olive oil 1 clove garlic 300g beef strips ½ red onion 1 carrot 1 head cos lettuce 6 mini flour tortillas 50g garlic aioli 1 long red chilli 2 Tbsp crispy shallots 2 Tbsp soy sauce 1 Tbsp honey ¼ cup vinegar, rice wine or white wine ¼ cup water 1 tsp salt 3 tsp sugar

Serves: 2

Finely chop the garlic. In a medium bowl, place the garlic, beef strips, soy sauce and honey. Toss to coat and set aside to marinate. While the beef is marinating, thinly slice the red onion. In a small bowl, combine the onion, vinegar, water, salt and sugar. Stir to coat the onion in the liquid and set aside until just before serving. While the onion is pickling, grate the carrot (unpeeled). Shred the cos lettuce. Thinly slice the long red chilli (if using). In a second medium bowl, combine the carrot, lettuce and chilli (if using). Heat a drizzle of olive oil in a medium frying pan over a high heat. Once hot, add half the beef strips and cook, tossing, for 1-2 minutes, or until browned and cooked through. Transfer to a plate and repeat with the remaining beef strips. While the beef is cooking, heat the mini flour tortillas in a sandwich press or on a plate in the microwave for 10 second bursts, or until warmed through. Just before serving, drain the liquid from the pickled onions. Top the tortillas with the salad, the Korean beef and the quick pickled onions. Add a dollop of garlic aioli and a sprinkle of the crispy shallots.

Blueberry & chia breakfast pudding Recipe courtesy of Australian Blueberries [australianblueberries.com.au] Serves: 2 Chia pudding 1¼ cups (310ml) milk 1 tsp honey 4 cardamom pods, split 1/3 cup (40g) chia seeds 1 Tbsp finely chopped pistachios Blueberry, vanilla and rosewater jam 2 x 125g punnets blueberries 2 tsp honey, plus extra to drizzle (optional) 1½ tsp rosewater ½ vanilla bean, seeds scraped

To make the blueberry jam, combine the blueberries, honey, rosewater and vanilla in a small saucepan. Set over low heat and gently simmer for 5-10 minutes, until the blueberries soften and begin to collapse to make a chunky jam. Set aside to cool. Meanwhile, prepare the chia pudding by heating milk, honey and cardamom together in a small saucepan over low-medium heat for 3-4 minutes or until it reaches scalding point. Set aside to infuse for 10 minutes. Strain the milk into a medium bowl, add the chia seeds and stir to combine. Set aside for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally to break up any lumps, until the seeds absorb the liquid and swell to make a thick pudding consistency. Add the pistachios and stir to combine. To assemble, place a large spoonful of the jam into the base of two serving glasses or bowls. Cover with the chia pudding and spoon over the remaining jam. Top with a dollop of yoghurt and sprinkle with pistachios. Drizzle with honey for additional sweetness if desired.

Eyes on the prize When you think of beautiful storytelling where boxing features as the focal point of the tale, classic films like Rocky, Raging Bull and Million Dollar Baby spring to mind. The sweet science can convey the metaphors of perseverance and having to fight one’s own battle in a way that translates seamlessly into filmic or theatrical language, as it is in the case of Prize Fighter, a production coming to the Queanbeyan Bicentennial Hall later this month. Prize Fighter director Todd MacDonald told Canberra Weekly the critically acclaimed piece regularly moves the audience. “It’s a very powerful story about a kid who’s gone through really extreme trauma; he was a child soldier who came to Australia and discovered boxing, which was his tool for redemption in a way. “It’s undeniably a live event, it’s like going to watch boxing, it’s much more than a film,” he said. The work is performed in ‘the round’, meaning with surround seating. MacDonald said that since it consists of two boxing matches with a story woven throughout, it was a logical choice. “It is literally as much like being in a boxing match as possible, where they stick the boxing ring in the middle of the floor and go.

“All sport is in the round, so I guess that’s a really clear comparison. “For me, going to the theatre or going to see a live show, it’s always about the physicality, it’s always about what happens in the space between the performers and the audience,” he said. Having been written by Congolese-Australian Future D. Fidel, MacDonald said the play affords audiences the opportunity to hear and see a story

they won’t have experienced before. “Quite often audiences will say I’ve never met a refugee, what an incredible story and an incredible human being. “It’s just a human story about survival and redemption and trying to make a better life where none of us have any idea about that struggle.” Fidel told Canberra Weekly he based most of the events of the play on experiences either himself or those close to him had gone through. “I think to have this very authentic is very critical, and to tell a story about other people’s lives it has to be authentic and you have to be careful how you tell the story,” he said. For him, one of the key messages of the play is redemption. “It doesn’t matter how dark or bad the struggles you go through, there’s always tomorrow where you can dust yourself off and carry on. “And to be able to forgive others, that’s another big element of Prize Fighter,” he said. Fidel said the two elements of the story that have been fictionalised are the main character’s backstory of being a child soldier, and boxing, a sport Fidel never participated in. “In the ring it’s you against another person. That idea of having boxing is to portray that nobody else can fight your fights, you have to stand on your own and fight for yourself.” Prize Fighter has gone from strength to strength since its stage debut in 2015, having subsequently been novelised, and now being worked into a screenplay with funding from Screen Queensland. Fidel said the play’s Queanbeyan run is a great opportunity for locals to come and experience fine arts and see why it’s been doing so well. Canberran stages The Director

Now showing A Simple Favor (M) A-type personality single mother Stephanie Smothers (Anna Kendrick) runs a housewifethemed video-blog, explaining the recent disappearance of her close friend Emily Nelson (Blake Lively). Flashing back, Stephanie meets the super-hip Emily at the end of a school day, who suggests a play-date for their children with martinis for the grown-ups, before she mysteriously vanishes. The novel on which the movie is adapted is apparently more of a straight thriller in the vein of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train. Regular comedy director, producer and writer Paul Feig adds his flair to elevate the material from being derivative. The movie therefore has streaks of dark, satirical comedy with a kitsch visual style. Kendrick plays her character as a typical 1950s housewife, compacted by her presentation to a wide internet audience. We soon get the hint, however, that her reality is not too far below this surface. Juxtaposed against Kendrick is Lively’s Emily, an ‘id’

character exuding jaw-dropping Parisian style on top of a gutter-mouth free of the constraints of this small town’s rigid social norms. It is easy to see how Stephanie can readily idolise Emily, and simultaneously, how Emily can so easily manipulate Stephanie. Emily’s husband (Henry Golding) holds his own in the middle of these shenanigans with a well-rounded performance; however, this movie is the lead ladies’, whose characters steal the show. Verdict: A straightforward plot elevated by dark, comedic (albeit shaky) tonal shifts and its leads’ performances. 4 stars. - Luke McWilliams

Canberra-based performing artist Simon Doctor is set to direct and star in a production of The Director, by US writer Nancy Hasty, which is due to open at the Actors Pulse Playhouse in Redfern NSW next month. The play is set in a run-down rehearsal studio in New York, where theatre director Peter now works as a janitor in exchange for being able to use the rehearsal spaces to conduct his ‘research into acting’. After he meets an award-winning playwright, Annie, he reluctantly agrees to direct her new play after she expresses dissatisfaction with the existing director and the actors that director has cast. Doctor has worked on numerous theatre projects in New York with Hasty, the playwright and his good friend. This is a great fun read. Like thousands of other new mums, Lex Tyler is returning to work after being off on maternity leave. The only difference is that she is an assassin for the British Government. Shrugging off ‘working mum guilt’, she dives into her new case involving a Russian oligarch and finds that the easiest way to get to her target is through his wife and her West London group of yummy mummies. Asia is a gifted, amusing author and Killing It zips along at a brisk pace with plenty of witty, funny asides and the occasional moment of suspense. Highly recommended.

Each week, progress through eight rounds completing each exercise with a 10-second rest. Now lift those knees soldier, high like your heart rate.

You can do this into a pillow at home, with a boxing bag at a gym or shadow box in a mirror – show yourself who’s boss! • Stand side on, guard up, light on your feet, and jab twice with your front arm – quick, like a dart! • Throw a single forward punch with your back arm (the ‘cross’) followed by a hook punch with your front arm (lead with your elbow across your body on this one). • Finish with two uppercuts – elbows tight against your body, first starting at your chin and leading through to head height.

The Spiderlady push-up is a variation of the standard push-up, which adds in hip flexion. • Start in the standard push-up position, but with your arms staggered – one arm under your shoulder and the other arm placed back under your rib cage. • As you lower your torso towards the floor, bend your elbows out to the side. • At the same time, lift your foot (the one closest to your arm that is further back) off the floor and bend the knee to hitch it up beside your hip or to touch your elbow (depending on your strength and flexibility). • You can perform this exercise on the spot, or you can walk a step forward on your hands each time and perform the push-ups moving forward. Really make sure you’re pulling in your tummy to support your back. • Repeat this action, alternating sides.

Try a combination of leafy greens such as lettuce, spinach and kale with cucumber and celery, lemon or lime and herbs like parsley, mint, ginger or basil. For a touch of sweetness, add green apple or coconut water. If you don’t have a juicer, use a blender and then a fine mesh strainer to remove the pulp. So instead of that second coffee this morning try a green juice and notice the upgrade to your energy levels, mood and mental clarity for the rest of the day.

Orange all-round kitchen spray This will clean and sterilise all surfaces – kitchen and bathroom – and leave everything smelling delicious. Spring clean-out Don’t put off your spring cleanout! Start your spring cleaning off with the kitchen and remove all of your crockery from the cupboards, says stylist Claire Delmar on behalf of Sheridan. “By lifting everything onto a table or bench, you can easily give the cupboard a thorough clean,” Claire says. “As you remove the items of crockery, look through all the pieces and remove any ceramics that are chipped or broken.” Claire suggests editing the items

Tightly pack the orange peel into a glass jar and cover with the white vinegar. Put the lid on, and then leave to stand for 4 weeks. Gently shake the jar occasionally during this period. Strain the vinegar into a spray bottle and top up with an equal amount of water; shake briefly to combine. Spray directly onto surfaces and wipe with a damp cloth. This will keep indefinitely.

Storage solutions If you’re redecorating this spring, consider purchasing furniture with practical storage built in. Melissa Gullifer, stylist from Focus on Furniture, says there are great quality pieces of furniture with built-in storage solutions to suit every room. “If you are decorating a lounge room or living area, look for entertainment units with suitable storage draws. Think about what you would put in there and always check the height and width of the storage space so you can fit in all

your electrical and entertainment devices in easily,” she says. Opt for coffee tables, lamp or side tables with in-built storage drawers. “It’s a clever way to shop because you are looking for specific pieces of furniture that are not only great quality but offer the perfect storage solutions for your home.” Melissa also suggests using buffets in the living areas to store tableware, napery, cutlery, glassware and more. In the bedroom, opt for beds with builtin drawers and shelves. 55

New nightlife destination Plans to turn Canberra’s iconic Centre Cinema building at 50 Bunda Street into the city’s hottest hospitality precinct are a step closer with two floors being leased for the capital’s newest nightclub. “Canberrans love a good night out, proven by the fact we spend more on eating out than the rest of the country,” says Colliers International office leasing executive, Caleb Brinton. He says many were disappointed when the Academy nightclub announced it would be closing, having been one of the ACT’s most popular after hour’s venues for more than a decade. Brinton says the new tenant will be a perfect match. “Fiction nightclub will shortly open its doors following a major refurbishment.
