This week... From the editor

Welcome to our first edition of 2019, which, thanks to the magic of technology, pre-planning and a great team, actually went to press before Christmas (19 December to be precise). As a result, I haven’t signed off this column with my usual list of things to feel grateful for this past week – a practice regular readers will be all too familiar with. But please indulge my sharing why this practice began – plus it’s a nice way to kick off the New Year. Scientific research shows that being more grateful can improve your overall sense of wellbeing and life satisfaction. The Harvard Medical School defines gratitude as “a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives … As a result, gratitude also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals – whether to other people, nature or a higher power”. Simply being grateful for being alive is a great way to motive oneself to seize the day. And gratitude can be contagious, in a good way. Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) was onto something when he said: “Cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and to give thanks continuously. And because all things have contributed to your advancement, you should include all things in your gratitiude.” I wish you appreciation and abundance in 2019.

news Have your say on Canberra’s new playgrounds

Glebe Park in Canberra’s CBD is one of several areas in the ACT which has been slated for a new play space. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.

The ACT Government is calling on Canberrans to help design three new nature play spaces that will be built in the City, Woden and Farrer.

ACT Minister for City Services, Chris Steel, said this process of co-design would ensure the community have a chance to be

involved in creating great new play spaces in their own suburbs. “The new nature play spaces will be built in Eddison Park in Woden, Glebe Park in the City and a park in Farrer near the shops. They will be a welcome addition to Canberra’s already extensive playground network,” Minister Steel said. “Natural play spaces provide creative and imaginative play experiences, using elements from the landscape, such as logs and rocks, to encourage children to climb, jump and explore. With nature play the possibilities can be much more flexible than traditional play equipment, and we want to know what you think should be in your suburb. “There are lots of ways you can get involved in the design of these new play spaces, including a number of pop-up design

sessions in the parks …, an online survey, and co-design workshops in February. We will also be working directly with local schools, childcare centres, youth groups and special needs schools through a series of targeted co-design sessions.” The ideas and design suggestions collected through the engagement process will be used to create three final designs to be built. The pop-up sessions for Glebe Park and Farrer were held in midDecember. The pop-up session for Eddison Park will be held on Sunday 13 January 8-10am at the Southside Farmer’s Market, Canberra College. The online survey will be open until Friday 15 February. Snake safety this summer Snakes love to slither out of their hiding spots and into our backyards during the summer months. During snake season, Canberrans are urged to be mindful when out and about. According to ACT Conservator Ian Walker, Eastern brown snakes are most frequently seen across Canberra from October until March. “While they are highly venomous, they are naturally shy and will only strike when provoked,” Mr Walker said. “If you do come across a snake, the best approach is not to catch or kill them, as harassing the reptile may cause it to defend itself by striking,” he said, as the weather started to heat up in October. “It’s also timely to remind people that snakes are a protected species, and under the Nature Conservation Act it is an offence to capture, harm or kill them.” If you do come across a snake, remember: • When left alone, snakes present 6

little danger to people and animals. • If you see a snake, move pets and children away until the snake moves off. • When bushwalking, let friends or family know where you’re going, wear enclosed shoes, take a backpack with a first aid kit and be alert at all times. • Keep gardens, sheds and aviaries well maintained. • Don’t attempt to capture or kill snakes, instead call Access Canberra on 13 22 81 for further advice, or call a licensed snake catcher. Pets and snakes can often clash as well, with dogs in particular susceptible to snake encounters. PETstock veterinarian Dr Hay Chung said in summer, snakes are likely to be found in search of water, food and shelter. “It is important for dog owners to always remain vigilant as depending upon the species of snakes, the time of the day or the season that they are

most active can vary. It is becoming increasingly common for dogs to encounter snakes in or around their own homes in suburban environments,” Dr Chung said. “The warning signs of a snake bite can vary and are time sensitive: weakness, not walking straight to collapse, loss of bladder or bowel control, blood in urine, rapid and shallow breathing, bleeding from snake bite wound.” Dr Chung said the best way to avoid a pet snake bite at home is to: • Minimise the places snakes can hide in; clear undergrowth, fill holes in the ground, and mow the lawn regularly. • Rodents can attract snakes, so make sure you have nothing in the house that may attract rodents, such as spilled food. • Know who to call when you notice a snake in your house. Do not attempt to capture a snake yourself. • Do not let your dog examine a dead snake as the venom may still

be active on the fang or it may not actually be dead. And outside the house: • Keep your dog on leash at all times. • Do not let them explore holes or dig under rocks.

news New dental clinic on the move

The ACT’s second mobile dental clinic will be based around local community services. Photo: supplied.

A new mobile dental clinic will begin seeing patients this month, after it was launched on Tuesday 18 December 2018.

The clinic, the second of its kind in Canberra, will be based around local community services such as Companion House and Toora

Women Inc. It will also service the Bimberi Youth Justice Centre. “We know that good oral health is fundamental to an individual’s overall wellbeing, but it can also be difficult for some people in our community to access,” said Minister for Health and Wellbeing Meegan Fitzharris. “A healthy mouth enables people to eat, speak and socialise without pain, discomfort or embarrassment. “The establishment of this additional mobile dental clinic will extend dental care to people who need it but might currently have difficulty visiting a dental clinic at a Community Health Centre.” The dental treatments available at the mobile clinic are the same as those available at regular community-based dentists, and include dental examinations and X-rays, restorative services such

as fillings and extractions, and preventative services such as cleaning and oral hygiene education. “This service will be run throughout Canberra and will improve the physical access to dental treatment facilities by visiting agencies that support Canberrans who might be experiencing mental health issues, domestic or family violence, alcohol and drug issues and homelessness as well as new refugees to Australia,” Minister Fitzharris said. “I am sure this new clinic will have real benefits for those who visit it and it will improve oral health outcomes for vulnerable people in our community.” Launched in 2014, the ACT’s first mobile dental clinic visits aged care facilities and has since provided treatment to over 2,000 Canberrans.

Book talk This week Jeff and Michael Popple recommend five good reads for the pool or beach this summer.

1

The Promised Land by Barry Maitland Allen & Unwin, $29.99

A clever whodunnit always makes for enjoyable summer reading, and the latest Brock and Kolla detective story by Australian author Barry Maitland will keep crime readers happily occupied in between swims. Set in London, it has all the ingredients of a good mystery. The detectives are engaging, the secondary characters are well fleshed out and the plot is cleverly constructed. There is a good mid-book twist and Maitland keeps the surprises coming all the way to the last page. There is also a nice literary sub-plot about a lost George Orwell novel. A very enjoyable read.

2

OtherEarth by Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller

Mantle, $29.99

Those looking for a bulky holiday read should check out this impressive piece of historical fiction. Set in 1549, it features lawyer Matthew Shardlake who is sent to Norwich to investigate the murder of a distant relative of his client, Princess Elizabeth. As he uncovers a complex conspiracy, a massive peasant rebellion overtakes the city, forcing Matthew to choose between friends. Tombland is the seventh book in one of the best current historical mystery series. It is an exceptionally good read, centred on a captivating mystery and containing convincing historical details. It is over 800 enjoyable pages long and will keep readers very entertained these holidays.

5

An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen Macmillan, $29.99

Popular fiction in 2018 was dominated by domestic suspense novels. A lot of them were forgettable, but there were some gems, such as J P Delaney’s Believe Me. Now 2019 is off to a good start with the very impressive An Anonymous Girl. When Jessica Farris sneaks her way into a psychology study on ethics and morality, she is just after some quick money. But when her responses draw her to the attention of the mysterious Doctor Shields, she becomes involved in something more sinister. Well written, clever and surprising, this could well be the summer’s best thriller.

Rock the Boat, $19.99

Comedy icon Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller once again team up to produce an exciting young adult thriller that is ideal for the holidays. After freeing his best friend, Kat, from inside the Otherworld VR game, Simon and his friends are on the run from the Company. But as they attempt to fight back with new allies, they are unprepared for the secrets they will uncover. OtherEarth is an intriguing novel that features an amazing combination of video game adventure, fun characters, great humour and a thrilling, conspiracy-laden tale. An outstanding read that will appeal to a diverse audience.

3

4

Tombland by C J Sansom

Calm the F**k Down by Sarah Knight Quercus, $29.99

The summer break is always a good time to reflect. Renowned ‘anti-self help guru’ Sarah Knight has produced another clear-sighted book for those who spent too much time in 2018 overthinking and worrying. Sarah acknowledges that bad things can and will happen to you. But instead of wallowing in worry, she sets out what you can realistically do about your problems and how you can get on with your life. Her tone is very down to earth, and the advice is given without jargon or the usual self-help platitudes. A timely reminder for all of us to calm down.

time out A beginner’s guide to the NSW South Coast It’s January, and therefore customary that Canberrans migrate east to the NSW South Coast. This is a guide for the uninitiated, or those looking for something new, and covers a few spots up and down the Shoalhaven, Eurobodalla and Sapphire Coasts.

Boggy Creek at Merimbula is popular with families.

Jervis Bay

Durras

Merimbula

Jervis Bay is a series of small holiday townships of Huskisson, Vincentia, Hyams Beach, and Callala Bay, the Booderee National Park, and beautiful beaches all located on the shoreline of this spectacular bay. Known for its remarkable white sands and glorious waters, head inland and you’ll just find more to be in awe of. There is eucalypt forest, woodland, swamps, dunes, mangroves, rainforest, scrub, grassland and heathlands, all of which can be explored via bushwalks, drives or bike rides. Camping options inside Booderee National Park, such as Green Patch and Bristol Point, are very popular with Canberrans and Sydneysiders alike, and require booking in advance over peak season.

Comprising the three tiny townships of Durras North, Durras Lake and Durras South, they’re all set in the heart of the lush Murramarang National Park and just a 15-20 minute drive north of Batemans Bay. It’s perfect for those seeking seclusion and spectacular sandy beaches. Camping at the neighbouring Depot Beach and Pebbly Beach offers more of the same.

Merimbula is a charming seaside holiday town offering a range of water-based activities including fishing, swimming, surfing, boating, lake cruises, scuba diving, sailboarding and canoeing. Merimbula is also ideal for exploring Bournda National Park, driving to Tathra, bushwalking, kayaking and bike riding. Located about 30km south of Bega and 26km north of Eden, it’s a bit further south than the other options here, but the drive down via the Snowy Mountains Highway is a winner, and a nice change of pace from the Clyde.

Stop, look, and plan

Ulladulla and its broader region (which for the purposes of this article includes Mollymook and Milton) caters to just about everyone. Food highlights include one of the NSW South Coast’s finest in the form of Rick Stein’s at Bannisters and the vegetarian and vegan friendly Pilgrims at Milton. The region features lookouts, beaches and walks aplenty. You’d be hard pressed running out of things to do around here.

That’s the message from Surf Lifesavers this year, who are encouraging swimmers of all ages and abilities to draw a line on the sand and to pause, look for hazards, and assess the dangers before entering the ocean. Rip currents are an ever present danger on NSW beaches responsible for a significant number of rescues performed by surf lifesavers, while alarmingly, research shows that while beachgoers express confidence in their ability to recognise a rip, in reality less than half actually can. It is believed that nearly 4 million Australians have experienced the terror of being caught in a rip current with the majority of those involved in a fatal incident are males aged 25-39. To ensure the safety of yourself and your loves ones when you’re at the beach this summer, have a plan and swim at a patrolled location and between those red and yellow flags. Another resource available to swimmers is the Surf Lifesaving (SLS) Beachsafe website and app, which provides beachgoers with the latest information about every Australian Beach. Go to beachsafe.org.au or download the Beachsafe to your mobile; available on both Apple and Android devices. -Denholm Samaras

Trending in 2019 What’s hot this year? Here are some of the hottest trends tipped to be big in 2019, according to the experts.

via soothing palettes that soften our environment and give us the measure of serenity we seek. Muted, chalky hues will grow in popularity with greens – from mint to sage – leading the charge, backed up by watermelon, subdued apricot and soft tans. Matte finishes will continue to rule the roost. • Designed secondary spaces: We’re seeing every inch of space utilised in the home by integrating deliberate features into any forgotten areas. The design approach to such spaces calls attention to them, rather than allowing them to recede into the background. Think alcoves turned into wine storage, under-stair areas becoming play spaces for children, display elements in disused areas, functional joinery built into narrow spaces and corners transformed into eye-catching studies. Focus on Furniture stylist Melissa Gullifer says Australians will be focusing on sustainability in home design this year. Her top trend predictions are: •

WITH HOME EDITOR, LIBBY KIMBER

Home design platform Houzz has released their top design trends for 2019, citing colour, bold statements and indoor-outdoor living. • Striking wall treatments: Vertical surfaces are set to be a new design frontier in homes. From walls to island benches, we will continue to see a more creative approach to these facings, such as halfround oak dowels used to great effect on island bench fronts, shiplap cladding used in exciting new ways, and wool as a wall covering. • Pastel kitchens: Professionals on Houzz are seeing an increased demand for pastel-coloured kitchen cabinets. ‘Millennial pink’ made major inroads into decor in 2018, opening the way for other pastel-based hues, including baby blues, green washes and soft greys. Proving to be a safe way to include colour in the kitchen, pastels are likely to rival all-white kitchens in popularity this year and beyond. • Statement vanities: Expect bathrooms to take over from kitchens as the key place to stamp your style. Watch for the rise of statement vanities; whether personalised with statement handles, showcase original joinery or painted in bold, saturated colour. Plain white and laminate surfaces will take a back seat, while the design-savvy step up and express their creativity in new ways. • Indoor-outdoor: The look of exterior furniture will move closer to that of interior furniture. Webbed detailing, sling-back chairs and turned legs on tables will be embraced by the fashion-

forward. Those who desire relaxed outdoor living are likely to forgo large dining settings and instead turn over their space to living roomlike arrangements by choosing roomy modular sofas, accompanying coffee tables and statement armchairs. • The rise of the pod: Timber-clad pods have been popular as a way to add a separate backyard room, granny flat, teenage retreat or studio in recent years. Now we’re seeing pod-like shapes attached to or inside homes. We suspect rounded pods will continue to pop up in the centre of otherwise conventional spaces. • Calming colours: The desire for physical and mental wellbeing will increasingly be expressed

sw-architects, Sam Noonan Photography.

Colour: Matte black seems to be moving from fashion to interiors. Expect to see bold, highcontrast furniture designs such as luxurious marble and black steel or black leather and deep, brown timbers. Move over rose gold; traditional metallic gold is going to make a major comeback in 2019, with dark, bright gold pairing with raw, natural finishes. Sustainability: Australians are more conscious about ending the ‘war on waste’. Retail companies are also looking for new ways to improve their environmental processes and we’ve seen a massive trend towards customers looking for companies who are taking this seriously. Earthy tones and greenery: Timber finishes are the perfect way to let the outdoors in and feel a little summery all-year round. Indoor plants continue to be on trend.

Style guide: bathrooms

With bathrooms set to steal the show from kitchens this year, Wesley Sinclair from Highgrove Bathrooms gave us his 2019 trend predictions for bold, luxurious bathroom spaces. • Brushed brass finishes: The embodiment of modern elegance, brushed brass finishes are undoubtedly making a comeback and will continue well into 2019. Suited to most colour schemes, but especially darker palettes, the warm, burnished tones and earthy industrial sheen of brushed brass give a luxe appeal to your bathroom, instantly adding value and a ‘no expense spared’ look and feel to your home. It’s a classic, timeless finish that will stand the test of time. • Dark, bold colours: For those looking to move with the times and make a bold statement, darker colours is an emerging trend not to be missed. In particular, bathroom-ware and accessories in a deep forest green and striking navy will soon dominate new bathroom interiors. Whether you’re looking to splash some vivid colour with a vanity, plush towels, cabinetry or statement

28

wall, bold colours will deliver the atmosphere you want. • Concrete: Introducing a new and unique texture to your bathroom will transform the look and feel of the space dramatically. A concrete finish has a bespoke look and is fast becoming an interior design favourite. Consider bringing concrete textures into your bathroom by pairing a concrete basin with a timber vanity top or matte black tapware for a contemporary look. • Mirrors: Bringing that fivestar feel to your bathroom is a must, and what better way to do that than with LED mirrors? The streamlined look of an integrated LED mirror oozes a sense of luxury while brightening up your bathroom with dedicated task lighting and creating the illusion of more space. If the bright lights aren’t quite calling your name, opt for round or oblong mirrors instead. The curved profile of a round mirror can soften the overall look of your bathroom. With an elongated oblong mirror above the vanity, you’ll be able to create the illusion of a higher ceiling.

Methven-Maku Satinjet rail shower. Photo: Methven.

Andy Grigor, Head of Design and Innovation at tapware designer and manufacturer Methven, says the ‘industrial look’ will remain strong in bathroom design. He gave us his top give bathroom design predictions for 2019: • Materials: Concrete, whether it’s porous and unrefined or smooth and sanded, is growing in popularity with a strong nod to the use of urban industrial materials. We are seeing concrete being used with increasing popularity for floors and walls and even whole basins. • Natural: Natural materials, such as wood, work to balance and create softness, and perfectly complement the industrial theme. The use of reclaimed wood gives a great rustic and worn-in charm while creating warmth and softness in juxtaposition with the colder industrial materials such as metal and concrete. • Black: While bathroom design is calling on industrial influences,

there is a softer approach to the concept in bathrooms with the use of more modern materials such as matte black finishes. Matte black tapware is very popular due to its ability to pair so well with other current design and style trends. • Metals: With reference to the urban city and industrial work spaces, the use of metals remains strong in bathrooms, with warmer tones such as copper, gold and bronze used as eyecatching features. These metals suggest a touch of luxury against the industrial theme. • Pops of colour: Another trend that’s continuing into 2019 is the mid-century Miami look, with a focus on soft colours and dusty pastels such as mint and powder pink. Classic 1950s patterns are also popular on tiles and textiles, as well as mid-century curves making a comeback. Pale wood can also beautifully complement the mid-century Miami colours.

Local home to feature on Selling Houses Australia A Queanbeyan home has been chosen to appear on the makeover program Selling Homes Australia, which will air in March 2019. The home was a standout contender due to its time on the market and the renovation needed inside and out. Ray White Queanbeyan sales executive Ben Mills says that he had to take the property off the market for two months while the renovation process took place and the team at Selling Houses Australia worked their magic. “The home has an abundance of new features including new flooring in the lounge, kitchen, living and dining area, new walk-in pantry off of the brand new custom kitchen, new window treatments, new lighting and rooms styled by Shaynna Blaze of Selling Houses Australia,” he says. The exterior also had the expert treatment with

Girls in Property Property Council of Australia’s Girls in Property program has launched in Canberra with the goal of showing high school girls the pathways to working in the Territory’s property sector and hopes to cultivate the next generation of female property leaders. Property Council of Australia ACT Executive Director Adina Cirson said that some 38 female Year 9 students from Melba-Copland, Kingsford Smith and UC Kaleen High Schools were taking part in the 2018 program. “With the property industry being Australia’s biggest employer, taking action to engage with

The program gives students an opportunity to hear first-hand from and connect with inspirational and talented professionals in the property industry, including some of the best and brightest women working in the ACT property sector. The Property Council of Australia hopes the Girls in Property initiative will assist more young women to choose a career in property, by showing them the full range of options that are available and how rewarding working in the property industry can be. University of New South Wales (UNSW) has partnered with Australian company, WBS Technology, to roll out a wireless solution across the country that allows buildings to monitor themselves and report problems autonomously – and even talk to your smartphone. Known as EMIoT, the new wireless platform relies on LED exit signs as the backbone of a low-power meshed network that covers 99.9% of a building – even reaching underground carparks, pump systems and air conditioning. WBS Technology, which is commercialising the technology, has installed it in more than 10 apartment complexes – the latest being at Castle Hill in the northwest of Sydney. “All you need is to install the emergency lights, and they all automatically connect to each other, and that creates the network,” says UNSW’s School of Computer Science and Engineering Dr Wen Huof. The emergency lights can then be networked with other devices via various wireless technologies, including Bluetooth, which allows them to be controlled locally with a smartphone or via the Internet from anywhere in the world.

Circa 1900, ‘Warrane’ brings the quintessential old world charm and modern sophistication of a coastal home. Located on the northern side of Batemans Bay and only a few minutes’ drive to the town centre and spectacular beaches, the estate offers privacy, serenity and a presence rarely found in the Batemans Bay area. “This property truly tells a tale of two worlds. From the elegant tree-lined driveway to the stainless steel kitchen with Smeg cooking appliances, the tranquillity continues as you look across the fully landscaped gardens and manicured lawns to the 12m solarheated swimming pool,” says Raine & Horne agent Aristotle Stavros. The main home is brimming with striking features including formal

and informal living areas with high ornate ceilings and skirting, designer appointed master suite with a walk-in dressing room/robe and stunning marble ensuite, and a chef’s kitchen with commercial 60-second turbo cycle dishwasher. “The main homestead comprises of four bedrooms, three bathrooms, study, formal room and large verandas. The estate also boasts a separate three-bedroom selfcontained guest house with a games and media room,” says Stavros. With a five-car garage providing all the space for the boat, cars and storage, and completely landscaped fully-fenced grounds including manicured lawns, feature plantings and stunning deciduous tree-lined formal driveway, this estate is a visual feast for the eyes. “This property has previously been a private residence but currently operates as a highend wedding venue, corporate event venue, family reunion accommodation and/or five star holiday home. property of the week

Luxury beachside living Malua Bay NSW 28 Tallawang Avenue This luxurious property, located in stunning Malua Bay, is what coastal living is all about. With panoramic views and an architectural design, this expansive property on Tallawang Avenue is bursting with magnificent features. “The home has been beautifully rebuilt with only the finest finishes and quality inclusions being used,” says Ray White agent Melissa Williams. “There are three levels of luxury living with massive water views, huge bedrooms (two with ensuites), three bathrooms with heated floors, spacious

entertaining areas including a fully covered back deck, a sensational kitchen with a threedoor oven and lots of practical storage, and a general sense of elegance.” High quality inclusions sweep through each room of the home with stone vanities, glass shower screens, quality fittings and heated floors making each bathroom and powder room elegant and luxurious; and it doesn’t stop there, with an ideal kitchen for entertaining including glass splash back, stone benchtop and silent range hood. “The Spotted Gum flooring,

quality carpets in the bedrooms, fantastic roof lines, plantation shutters, motorised Holland blinds and double glazing all make for a sumptuous residence,” says Williams. Additional standout features include two reverse cycle split system air conditioners, gas heating, gas hot water, security doors and a two-car garage with plenty of storage. “This house is designed for comfortable, flow-through living taking advantage of the ocean panorama and activities on Malua Bay Beach,” says Williams. Situated on the high side of Tallawang Avenue, there is easy beach access with uninterrupted beach and water views and the Malua Bay shops and facilities are just a short stroll away. According to Williams, the

beachside home would ideally suit an active family or one that loves to entertain and have guests stay over. “It would also suit a couple whose family have flown the nest but return regularly for a visit,” she says. What really sets this idyllic home apart is the attention to detail throughout and the quality of its materials and construction.

Bradley needs to forgive and forget; to learn to love his neighbour as himself. 2019 will be a great romantic year for him, filled with love and happiness if he doesn’t make himself the centre of attention. This is a year to discard anything useless, including worn-out habits, negative attitudes, dead-end relationships and material junk; a year for friendships and to take stock of his life. He’s in the process of completing a cycle that began nine years ago; it’s time to review that period quietly.

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

From 2 January it is full steam ahead as your ruling planet Mars enters your sign and remains there until 14 February. You’ll be able to tackle new beginnings with a growing confidence in yourself. The New Moon on the 6th warns you to take extra care whilst driving.

The New Moon on the 6th is a good time to declutter your home and to fall into a sensible routine with work; you could find yourself following a strict set of rules. You might travel overseas or investigate a part of the world you’ve always fancied knowing better.

Partnerships and relationships are going to be of paramount importance to you this year. New Moon on the 6th is the ideal time to renovate, build, move or buy a new home. Your interior decorator skills will certainly be on display for all to see.

Your home circumstances will play a major part in your life in 2019, which may mean a move of house, building work to be done, decorating or buying new furnishings. The New Moon on the 6th in your own sign ushers in a fresh new start to your life.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG The New Moon on the 6th falls in your work house ushering in a fresh start at your place of employment and improvements on the health front. Uranus in your 10th house indicates an unexpected breakthrough with your career and a move into a position that you’ve always dreamed of.

You’ll be focused on your career or business and find either your job becomes more interesting or you begin to do something new and highly satisfying. The New Moon on the 6th is the ideal time to start work on a creative project or something that involves writing or public speaking.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

With Mars in your 12th house until 14 February there will be a strong element of fantasy in your love life. Half-buried memories will come back to haunt you and you could find yourself facing up to old fears. The 6 January New Moon warns you against being closed minded in foreign situations.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

The New Moon on the 6th indicates your boss or the company you are working for may start to do really well and will pass on bonuses to you; it’s also a good time apply for a loan. You will make achievements as part of a group or a team.

2019 is a year when you will reach out and make the changes which will set the pattern of your life for many years to come. The New Moon on the 6th is the ideal time for dealing with children and young people or for embarking on creative projects.

During the year ahead, you’ll be dealing with children and young people or enjoying a more youthful attitude, possibly joining in sporting and youthful pastimes. The New Moon on the 6th indicates that a new source of income is possible or you may start a business of your own.

The coming year is a time of consolidation in all things and of steady and controlled growth. The New Moon on the 6th indicates that you may become involved with a sports team or people who are interested in artistic pursuits, or some kind of intellectual grouping.

This will be a busy and potentially restless year for you; a year for mental exploration and you could take evening classes at your local college. The New Moon on the 6th indicates you will enjoy making contact with a black sheep relative the rest of the family ignores.

Life and times of Berlusconi Seduction, glamour, corruption, drugs and raucous poolside parties: the life and times of scandal-plagued Silvio Berlusconi have long-demanded a screen depiction, and who better to deliver it than Paolo Sorrentino. The Academy Award-winning director of The Great Beauty and The Young Pope returns to the screen in spectacular fashion with Loro (CTC), a dazzling, topical and no-holds-barred depiction of life in Italy under the glistening eye of modern Europe’s most infamous politician. Releases nationally from 17 January.

For the DIY enthusiast Looking for a DIY present for the summer holidays? Chamberlain is offering one CW reader the chance to transform a garage door with a ‘smart’ makeover using a Chamberlain HandyLift myQ garage door opener. The HandyLift myQ can be attached to a single or double roller garage door in a few hours and connected to a home’s Wi-Fi network in minutes. The myQ app allows you to monitor and control your garage door from anywhere in the world. The HandyLift myQ also features premium reversal technology which will automatically stop and reverse if it senses an obstruction, ensuring children, pets and the family car are out of harm’s way. The Chamberlain HandyLift myQ is available at Bunnings Warehouse and is sold with two key ring remotes and one car visor remote. With an RRP of $499, the product is backed by a five-year warranty and Chamberlain’s after sales support service.

My favourite things DANCING Dancing has always been a huge part of my life. I love to move my body and get lost in the music.

LAKSA If I could only have one dish for the rest of my life, laksa would be it!

SNEAKERS Comfort is key, and I always feel stylish and comfortable wearing my Fila sneakers with active wear or casual fashion.

Emily Dibden

RUBY My darling ‘Jug’ (Pug x Jack Russell) dog Ruby.

Model and contestant on The Bachelor

Born and bred Canberran Emily Dibden recently graced our television screens on the last season of The Bachelor Australia alongside ‘Honey Badger’ Nick Cummins. Pursuing a career in dance at a young age, Emily went on to study and perform classical ballet interstate and overseas before ultimately sustaining an injury and changing her career path. Moving into fitness and Latin dance, Emily travelled the world competing and performing. Post The Bachelor, Emily is back living in Canberra, following in her father’s footsteps and working with him in arboriculture. When Emily’s not working, you will find her keeping active and walking around Lake Burley Griffin or Mount Ainslie, attending social events and spending time with her family and friends. 74
