This week... From the editor Things that make you go hmmm … When you wake up and it’s 2020 already! When your Christmas delivery fails to be delivered within 15 business days, then is sent to the billing address, not the recipient address in Tropical North Queensland. Sorry Mum and Dad. Your gift was delicious, by the way. When the box of invisible tape at the stationery store is empty. Or is it? When you accidentally bump into someone dressed in camouflage. Oops! Did not see you there. When Autocorrect replaces the T in your witty one-word retort of “Touché” with a D. Changes the Y in “Yum” to a B. Or substitutes a perfectly standard word with one you never knew existed. Shy? (Corrected translation: Why?) When the cashew butter label states: “Warning: contains nuts.” When the self-serve checkout asks if you’re using your own bag then repeatedly stalls to report “unexpected item in bagging area”. Expect the bag already. Ah, you’ve got to laugh at the small stuff. It makes it easier to cope with more significant issues that are bound to arise during the coming year. In 2020, I’ll be continuing my daily gratitude journal just as I have for several decades. Research suggests that if you’re able to find one thing to be grateful for each day, it can help to improve your overall physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. What’s your thing today? - Julie Samaras

news Canberra is school excursion ‘hot spot’: research The University of Canberra (UC) has launched new research into school excursions to Canberra, which shows teachers visiting the ACT see Canberra as a “pre-eminent school excursion destination in Australia”. UC’s Dr Naomi Dale said, overall, there has been an increase in the number of visitors to Canberra since data collection began in 1997, with teachers highlighting the ACT’s positive attributes. “The majority of Canberra’s interstate visitors come from NSW (50.1%), followed by Victoria (18.5%) and then South Australia (12.6%). We are finding quite high regional and rural numbers as well, with 30% of those visitors from these areas,” she said. “Teachers were highlighting positive links to the curriculum in the areas of civics and citizenship, Australian history and science

and technology. “They were also including art and culture, Indigenous culture and history, and health and sport as strengths for Canberra.” Dr Dale’s research involved collecting data from Canberra’s national institutions and attractions, as well as through discussions with teachers and coach drivers. She said the benefits of school excursions might “be more than expected”, particularly for the local economy. “I think people initially think with children visiting, they are bringing $10 pocket money and that’s the only impact; but financially we are finding the contribution to gross state product is really high because of the accommodation and the programs and obviously the transport,” she said.

School excursions to Canberra, to visit some of our most popular attractions, are almost a rite of passage for interstate school students, and new research from UC shows visits to the Capital have increased in popularity. File image.

RSPCA ACT warns of summer dangers As temperatures continue to soar this summer, the RSPCA ACT has issued a timely reminder about animals being left in cars. According to RSPCA ACT CEO Michelle Robertson, the organisation has already received more calls than over the corresponding time 12 months

ago and, with temperatures set to remain high, “the community should be hyperaware of the dangers”. “It only takes seven minutes for a dog to die in a hot car so this is a reminder to please not leave your pet in your car,” Ms Robertson said.

The RSPCA ACT currently have over 130 cats and kittens in foster care that are receiving love and socialisation before they make their way back to the shelter to be desexed, microchipped, vet checked and adopted.

6

The reminder comes as the RSPCA ACT prepares for an influx of animals coming into the shelter over the summer months. Ms Robertson said this is particularly so for cats and kittens, where the monthly intake average nearly doubles. “Kitten season is a contributor in this regard,” Ms Robertson said. “We also see a slight increase with dogs and puppies in summer months. With people being away, with festivities and other social events, stray dogs also increase. We see a slight peak in puppies coming in, but there is no discernible reason for this.” Ms Robertson said most animals come to the RSPCA either because their owners cannot look after them anymore; they have been abandoned, lost or hurt; or due to neglect or cruelty where these animals were seized by RSPCA Inspectors. “In the first instance, we

encourage prospective pet owners to think carefully before acquiring a pet. You need to be able to ideally commit for the lifespan of your pet,” Ms Robertson said. “We encourage people to ensure their pets are microchipped and desexed.” Some other helpful tips for the summer months include: • Always ensure your pet has adequate shade, and access to cool water. Where possible, spend time with your pet indoors. Pet owners are also encouraged to try to not overexert their pets with exercise as this could lead to heat stress. • If your pet is afraid of fireworks, consider bringing your pet indoors and closing any windows to try muffle the sounds. Allow your pet to hide in a safe and secure place. Creating a calm environment for them will make sure they feel safe.

news Support network for multiple birth families Having a child brings its own sets of challenges – and for multiple birth families, the challenge can be even greater, which is where a local support network can prove beneficial. The Canberra and Region Multiple Birth Association (CARMBA) is a support network for parents, guardians and expectant or adoptive parents of twins, triplets or more which was founded in 1973 and services the ACT and surrounding region. According to CARMBA president, Carmen Hinkley, the organisation aims to “offer support and provide information to multiple birth families throughout the anteand post-natal periods, the preschool stage and the primary and secondary school years”. “There are some unique challenges to having twins, triples

or more – particularly in those early days,” Carmen said. This includes juggling logistics in working out how to feed more than one baby at a time and managing sleep deprivation. Additional challenges in the school years include whether to keep your children in the same class or not; managing developmental and social differences; and maintaining the ‘twinship’ bond while encouraging different friends and interests. “They say it takes a village to raise children, and CARMBA really is one great big support village with people in the same tribe, helping each other out emotionally, socially and practically,” Carmen said. Kambah Village upgraded

This might just be the tip of the iceberg.

Upgrades to the Kambah Village shopping centre are now complete, with more car parking and green spaces, as well as new play equipment, toilets, a barbecue, the installation of more seating, improved pedestrian lighting and pathways. A private development to expand the Woolworths supermarket has been approved ready for

construction, and will include a new covered entrance to the shops as well as more retail spaces. ACT City Services Minister Chris Steel said there would be some disruption to local businesses when the private development is built and called on the Kambah community to continue to support them during construction.

Weston walk-in centre opens The Weston Creek nurse-led walk-in centre has opened its doors, with the local community now able to access free healthcare for minor injuries and illnesses, every day of the year. ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said Canberra’s walk-in centres provide people with access to health services closer to home. Phase two of the refurbishment will provide an additional space for Maternal and Child Services,

maternity and community nursing, which is due for completion later this year. Ms Stephen-Smith said more than 17,000 people were treated in Canberra’s walk-in centres from July to September 2019. An additional walk-in centre in Dickson is due to open in late 2020, as part of the new Dickson Community Health Centre. Healthier Choices Canberra advertising moment

Canberra, let’s strip things back There’s something about Mary. She has a warm, friendly smile that lights up a room and has a passion for simple heathy food that is positively addictive. Mary Levy, recently crowned the winner of the Healthier Choices Canberra Great Canberra Cook Off, Stripped Back Chef, said “I entered the cook off because I love inventing and adapting recipes to make them more nutritious, healthier and jam packed with flavour while still budget friendly for my family”. Her Mince Burger Wrap was the crowd favourite at the fi nale. One child was proclaiming that it was ‘the best pizza he’d ever tasted!’ as he licked the remnants of flavours off his fi ngers. “My recipe is based on the Middle Eastern ‘Arayes’ which uses a type of flatbread. It’s very easy to prepare and cooks quickly in a pan, barbecue or oven,” Mary said. “It can be very easily made by a school or sporting canteen or served up to family and friends for a weekend barbecue.”

Why do we need to strip things back? The rate of Canberran adults who are overweight or obese has increased from 40% in 1995 to 64% in 2017-18. Carrying excess weight puts individuals at increased risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, conditions affecting the muscles, bones and/or joints and some cancers. Small, easy changes to include more vegetables and whole foods in every day meals can have a big impact. Try Mary’s recipe for yourself. Fire-spotting chopper arrives in ACT

Brumbies to kick off campaign against Reds

A new fire-spotting helicopter has arrived in the ACT, to assist the ACT Rural Fire Service (RFS) over the summer months. The ‘Firebird 100’ chopper, owned by Microflite, has Secret Intelligence Gathering (SIG) capabilities, and can provide realtime streaming and scanning of any hotspots for potential fires

Earlier kick-off times, daytime rugby and traditional derbies headline the Brumbies 2020 Super Rugby fixture. The Brumbies start their season with a clash against the Reds at GIO Stadium on Friday 31 January, one of a trio of home fixtures for the new campaign. The Brumbies will also take on the Rebels and Waratahs at home, along with New Zealand sides the Highlanders and Hurricanes, the Jaguares from Argentina, the Stormers from South Africa and the Sunwolves from Japan. Barring any participation in finals football, the Sunwolves will play their final ever Super Rugby match at GIO Stadium in Canberra on Friday 29 May. In a move that will surely appeal to families, matches on Friday and Saturday evenings have been brought forward by half-an-hour with kick-off times now taking place at 7.15pm, rather than the usual 7.45pm. Brumbies memberships are now on sale. In other club news, Brumbies Academy product Issak Fines has returned to the club signing a deal for the 2020 Super Rugby season. Experienced

with infrared cameras, as well as the capability to water-bomb fires. The footage and data is sent, in real-time, to the Emergency Services Agency (ESA) Incident Management Team. In a statement, Emergency Services Minister Mick Gentleman said the Firebird 100 spotted a number of fires in the ACT last bushfire season, with emergency services able to bring them under control very early. “It’s an invaluable asset to the ACT community and is one of many initiatives the ACT Government has funded to protect Canberrans throughout the bushfire season, including recent recruitment of 20 new ACT Fire and Rescue firefighters,” he said.

Re-gift your unwanted presents National charity GIVIT is calling for presents that didn’t ‘spark joy’ to be re-gifted to a family or household living in poverty and in need of festive cheer. GIVIT ACT manager, Caroline Odgers, said re-gifting through the online charity was an easy and rewarding way to find new homes for unsuitable gifts. “We understand that a lot of effort goes into gifting to the people you care about, which is why we’re encouraging a second chance for those gifts to be appreciated,” she said. “Whether your children received far too many toys, or you unwrapped yet another tech device or pair of plain socks, these can all be the gifts that keep on giving for someone in need.” Australians can donate or re-gift through the following steps: Visit givit.org.au/give-items; submit general details and photos of the items; once a charity reserves your item/s, contact details between you and the charity are provided to allow easy pick-up/drop-off options; organise delivery with the charity and make a big difference to someone in need!

Share your community event. Email news@canberraweekly.com.au with ‘HYH’ in the subject field. Deadline is 10 days prior to Thursday edition date.

Back to school appeal Following the success of the inaugural Back to School Appeal in 2019, the ACT Government is again partnering with ACT community organisations and online charity GIVIT for the 2020 Appeal. 12 Day tripper

Between the abundance of local pools and natural swimming spots, there are plenty of places to cool off at this summer. Pack a picnic basket, swimmers and towels and go for a day out at a popular spot on the river, such as the Cotter, Kambah Pool or Pine Island.

Take a note from The Beatles and road trip out from Canberra for the day. Grab a map, close your eyes and pick one of our neighbouring NSW townships at random. A great time can be had exploring the likes of Murrumbateman, Yass, Goulburn, Gundaroo, Bungendore, Braidwood, Bowral or Bundanoon. 15

great summer reads

Jeff and Michael Popple recommend five good books for the pool, beach and backyard this summer. More of their reviews can be found on their blogs: murdermayhemandlongdogs. com and the unseenlibrary.com

Macmillan, $29.99

Looking for a good book to kick off your summer reading? Then check out Spy by bestselling author Danielle Steel. Spy follows the life of Alexandra Wickham, a young woman who serves as a British intelligence operative during and after World War II, but who can never reveal the truth of her job to any of her loved ones. Spy is an outstanding piece of historical fiction that expertly combines romance and family drama with an intriguing spy thriller story. A powerful and addictive read, Spy has something for everyone and is highly recommended.

Legacy of Ash by Matthew Ward Orbit, $32.99

If you need a massive book to read while travelling or lounging by the pool, you should get this debut fantasy novel from Matthew Ward. The Tressian Republic is under threat of invasion, and yet its rulers are blinded by plots and ambition. Three heroes may have a chance of saving their nation, however, bitter rivalries and the need for revenge threatens to turn them against each other. A complex novel with a widespread and exciting story, this excellent book is well worth checking out. At nearly 800 pages long, it is guaranteed to keep you busy and enthralled over the holidays.

3

Miracle Mutts by Laura Greaves Orbit, $32.99

Laura Greaves provides some feel-good reading, and great photos, with this lovely book about dogs who have shown incredible grit and determination. The 15 accounts collected here run the gamut from tales about dogs who have suffered abuse, medical issues and farming accidents, but have gone on to prosper and give back to their rescuers. Included among them is Maggie who was shot 17 times on the streets of Beirut and blinded, but now provides support to stressed out students in England. The abuse that many of these dogs received will make you angry, but the outcomes are a triumph of compassion and resilience.

4

The Strangers We Know by Pip Drysdale Orbit, $32.99

This briskly paced tale of love gone wrong is a good follow-up to Drysdale’s enjoyable The Sunday Girl. When Charlie sees a photo of her husband on a dating app she goes into a spin. Determined to find out what is going on, she signs up to the app to catch him out, but things soon spin out of control and she finds herself in a deadly situation. Charlie is an engaging narrator who combines a sense of mounting horror with wry observations on internet dating, “Think: zombie apocalypse with dick pics,” and the book builds to an unexpected climax. A good beach novel.

5

Asterix and the Chieftain’s Daughter by Jean-Yves Ferri and Didier Conrad Orion, $19.99

For a terrific fun read for the kids, think about grabbing this latest entry in the iconic Asterix series. Asterix, Obelix and the Gaulish village play host to the daughter of the legendary chieftain Vercingetorix in order to keep her out of Roman hands. However, the chieftain’s daughter is a rebellious young woman who is determined to run away, even with a dogged traitor hunting her. Part of a newer batch of Asterix comics that have a more modern flair, this latest volume has the heart of the original comics, as well as an amusing focus on the trials of the younger generation. Very entertaining.

Crowdfunded children’s book goes to print In March 2019, local awardwinning author Samantha Tidy, and illustrator/designer Juliette Dudley pressed launch on a crowdfunding campaign. Their goal – to publish a children’s book celebrating the wonders of exploring Canberra as a child. The response was one of excitement, overwhelming support and impatience. More than 300 passionate Canberrans pre-ordered a copy of Our Bush Capital. Not only did Canberrans embrace the book, but it caught the attention of two local tourism organisations. The National Capital Attractions Association (NCAA) and National Capital Educational Tourism Project (NCETP) collectively sponsored the publication, ensuring every Australian MP and Senator receives a copy in the first sitting week of Parliament in 2020.

With the campaign reaching well past its target, Our Bush Capital will be published on 13 January 2020. Our Bush Capital will be launched at several events around the city and will be available at many retailers. See samanthatidy.com for details of launches in Woden, Scullin, Gungahlin, Manuka and Wanniassa as well as direct orders.

Benefit’s national brow artist, Hannah Mutze, shares some top tips for the perfect summer brows: • Book a brow appointment several days before a big event, to allow time for post-wax redness to fade and your tint to settle in. • Book a spray tan for a couple days after your brow appointment; waxing afterwards will remove the tan. • Invest in a waterproof clear setting gel to create a polished finish and to set and secure your brows in place. • Water resistant formulas are a must! Ensure your brow pencil can survive a summer heatwave to avoid any smudging. • Avoid a block out with texturising brow gels. Blocked brows can look too harsh and heavy for the warmer months.

2020 forecast What’s hot or not in home renovation and design is constantly changing. We’ve asked the experts to look into their crystal ball and share their top home design trends for 2020. WITH HOME EDITOR, ALLISON TURNBULL

Curves Curves deliver a calm, soothing environment and, according to Houzz, the leading platform for home renovation and design, will emerge as an interior design trend in big ways. “We see designers and architects on Houzz introducing that curves add a feminine touch and create softness in spaces otherwise filled with hard surfaces. Architectural elements of the home will embrace rounded edges through circular windows, arches and curved walls as advances to technology allow architects to challenge structural boundaries.”

Energy efficiency Energy efficiency will continue to dictate building design in the 2020s. “Research shows that up to 40% of heat escapes from homes via windows, while double glazing can decrease heat loss by almost 30%,” says Christine Evans from Stegbar. “Building regulations will continue to push green building, new technologies in glazing

lifestyle. “Personalisation has moved beyond merely heating and lighting,” says Vera Meharg from Luxaflex Window Fashions. “Homeowners can take complete control in the management of shading, temperature control, energy efficiency and privacy in their home, all of which can actively reduce energy consumption and amp up security.”

Make sure your pet is always within eyesight (and earshot) so you can catch them before they touch something they shouldn’t.

Keeping your dog safe at the beach It’s summer time and the beach is calling. If you’re planning on taking your dog seaside, be sure to keep a close eye for any potential risks that could spoil a great day out. Things to look out for include jellyfish, snakes, ticks, things that can be swallowed and signs of heat stroke. PETstock vet Dr Hay Chung offers these beach safety tips: • Be prepared: Take plenty of water, a bowl, towels, sunscreen (for you and your buddy – particularly important for dogs with exposed skin, pink noses or short hair), and poo bags. • Keep an eye on your buddy: Make sure they are always within eyesight (and earshot) so you can catch them before they touch something they shouldn’t. • Jellyfish stings can cause local pain and swelling, but poisonous jellyfish stings can cause swelling of the head

and face, wobbliness, hives, drooling and anaphylactic reactions. If you notice these signs, take your dog to a vet immediately. • Always be on the lookout for snakes. An inquisitive dog may get bitten, so keep an eye on your pet and monitor them for signs of a snake bite – lethargy, wobbliness, drooling and vomiting. • The paralysis tick is found along the eastern coast from Cooktown in Queensland to Lakes Entrance in Victoria. As the name suggests, this tick causes paralysis starting from the hind legs, then spreading to the front legs. If you’re travelling to these coastal areas in spring/summer, it is recommended that you use appropriate tick protection. • Many dogs are inclined to chew

or swallow things like bait or fish hooks, because they smell fishy. In some cases, this can cause diarrhoea and vomiting. In more severe cases, the object may need to be surgically removed. • Heat stroke is another risk, particularly with energetic dogs. Heat stroke happens when the dog’s body temperature gets too high. This is caused by a combination of hot weather, high-energy activities, and sometimes dehydration. To reduce the risk of heat stroke, avoid visiting the beach in the hottest part of the day - mornings or late afternoons are best. • Monitor them back home: Be aware of any odd behaviour, your pet could be dehydrated or feeling unwell. Contact your closest vet immediately if you’re concerned.

ACT finalists in national awards Investors look to interstate Four finalists in the 2020 Property Council of Australia/Rider Levett Bucknall (RLB) Innovation and Excellence Awards hail from the ACT. “The ACT’s four finalists are a powerful symbol of an industry that continues to challenge itself to deliver better workplaces, homes and communities for Canberrans,” said RLB managing director, Mark Chappe. The finalists are: Moncrieff Affordable Homes for Purchase for Best Affordable Housing

Development; the John Gorton Building – façade and roof for Best Heritage Development; 3 Molonglo Drive for Best Office Development; and Capital Airport Group Office for Best Workplace Project. All ACT development finalists are in the running for ACT Development of the Year and the Rider Levett Bucknall Australian Development of the Year. The national award winners will be announced at the awards’ gala dinner in May.

Property investors will look to buy interstate this year, according to research from Property Investment Professionals of Australia (PIPA). The 2019 PIPA Investor Sentiment Survey found 45% of investors surveyed are looking to buy outside of their home state in the next 12 months. “More and more investors are recognising that there are myriad investment opportunities around the country, rather than being blindsided by

what’s happening in their own backyards,” said PIPA Chairman Peter Koulizos. “Australia has eight capital cities and dozens of major regional areas which have property markets at different stages of the market cycle at the same time.” He pointed to recent examples of growth in locations such as Canberra, Adelaide and Hobart, and parts of regional Australia, while property prices reduced in Sydney and Melbourne.

Batemans Bay named growth hotspot Popular NSW South Coast destination, Batemans Bay, has been named as a holiday location that’s primed for growth in the next three years. Analysis from suburbgrowth. com.au, part of the Select Residential Property (SRP) Research Group, identified 20 holiday hotspots in four different states, with a forecast median house price growth of up to 28% over the next three years. Batemans Bay was given a threeyear growth forecast of 22.1%. “While some of these locations might be better known as holiday destinations, they also have significant local

populations – in some cases, hundreds of thousands of people who live there all-year round,” said SRP director of research Jeremy Sheppard. “What this means is that these markets have solid fundamentals primed for growth, including the economic principals of demand and supply that apply upward housing price pressure.”

Analysis from suburbgrowth.com.au has suggested Batemans Bay is among ‘holiday hotspots’ primed for growth in the next three years.

Private retreat Denhams Beach NSW 223 Beach Road This coastal retreat is peaceful and private, with panoramic ocean views and access to a private beach. “This home enjoys title to the high water mark which is very rare, so effectively the property shares ownership of the beach with eight other properties with similar title,” says First National Batemans Bay licensed real estate agent, Pat Jameson. “We believe this small enclave of properties is the only one in our postcode with title to the high

water mark. “It has a private boatshed on the cove style beach, ideal to go fishing or kayaking or to check your lobster pot.” Built by local builder Tim Law, the home has been constructed to the highest quality finish, with materials such as timber recycled from the wharves of Port Kembla. Most rooms in the home enjoy north-facing ocean views, and Jameson says the property will appeal to the discerning buyer

looking for the ‘wow factor’. The home has three bedrooms, including a master bedroom with ensuite and walk-in robe on the property’s upper level. The open plan kitchen, meals and lounge area flows out onto the deck, where you can take in the breathtaking water views or take the stairs down to the private beach. Entertain either at the house on the deck, or down at the boatshed, with a large deck and pizza oven for waterfront dining. “The ideal buyer will appreciate the uniqueness of the property and the high quality of finish,” Jameson says. “It may interest a professional couple who want work/life balance with their own beach. There is a

great home office – although the stunning views may make it hard to concentrate whilst watching passing dolphins and whales.” This property, while allowing peace and privacy in abundance, is only five minutes’ drive from the Batemans Bay CBD, making it the perfect private hideaway.

celebrity birthday KATE BOSWORTH

2 January 1983

Relationships will be demanding, and it is at this point in Kate’s life that she will realise she has to give something to herself as well. If the people who matter most are not reciprocating and meeting her needs, she will have to make some important changes. When it comes to helping others, Kate must pick her mark; not everyone is deserving of her time, love and resources. If she is taken advantage of, she needs to be firm but compassionate.

in the stars ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER: 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

You will be forceful and assertive in dealings with authority, just don’t take this too far or you could wind up dishing out more than anyone deserves. Jupiter, planet of prosperity, is bringing you luck; over the next year you could receive a pay rise, inheritance, bonus, settlement or payout.

You could try to sort out a number of difficulties between you and your partner, only to find they walk away and do not listen. Mars in Libra brings tension; family members may make differing demands of you. The New Moon means you will be seductive and win admiration easily.

It’s full steam ahead this month, time to ask hard questions and take a firm stand. Don’t let a loved one walk all over you, and avoid procrastinating! Prosperity planet Jupiter helps you to capitalise on financial opportunities that come your way. It’s time to improve your communication skills.

There will be a surge in optimism which puts the sparkle back in your personality. Your popularity will increase over the coming weeks; you are going to be in a particularly romantic mood. Focus on praising others; this is likely to win you a great deal more friends.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

This month sees you play peacemaker, but you won’t be able to keep this up and there may be an outburst. You need cooperation from those around you, and acting like a tyrant won’t win you any points. Jupiter is in your romance zone; you could fall for someone overseas.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE Business prospects look good and you’ll focus on ways to increase your financial security. With Mars in Libra, your bonds with loved ones will strengthen and you may go out with friends who make interesting introductions. Communication and relationship challenges lie ahead. Your health could suffer from excess food and insufficient sleep.

Pace yourself and try to avoid runins with authority. This coming year, you could buy or sell real estate, move house or renovate. You need to focus on your job; the week is unlikely to pass without some confusion manifesting itself at work. Do your best to avoid misunderstandings.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT Your fussy and finicky side could run rampant if you let it – try to relax and keep things in perspective. Your public profile really takes off this year, as Jupiter blesses all forms of communications, so it’s a terrific time to start a blog, website or promote your business.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV Jupiter will see you capitalise on stamina, positive mood and good fortune. Relationships could feel a bit obsessive – remember that you are both separate people. Approach challenges with plenty of passion, intelligence and resilience. Smart Scorpios will seize the moment, day and year, grabbing opportunities as they come along.

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC It’s definitely time for speedy Sagittarians to slow down and become more philosophical, as Jupiter moves through your contemplation zone. You’re keen to be in charge, and Saturn and Venus encourage you to utilise your leadership skills in diplomatic ways. Your courage and enthusiasm will impress others.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB A romantic date will lift your heart and a simmering attraction could gather momentum. Fun places and encounters will keep you smiling, and an exciting project will go ahead in leaps and bounds. Keep tabs on your spending otherwise money will simply slip through your fingers.

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR You are likely to be given thoughtful gifts, and a tantalising attraction could intensify. A good financial deal will please you and a new possession adds to your happiness, but an expensive purchase may play havoc with the budget. Important decision making could lead you in or out of a commitment.

My favourite things FAMILY Family shapes who we are, so I owe them a lot. I always want to make them proud in everything that I do.

FOOD Love, love, love all food. Anytime, anywhere, I am always hungry and ready for lunch.

BEING A MUM One of the hardest things I have had to do in my life, but also one of the best. Life is certainly more hectic since having my son, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Jessie Rasschaert Canberra United

Born and raised in Canberra, Jessie Rasschaert is playing in her first W-League season, debuting with Canberra United. A defender, Jessie started playing soccer when she was eight years old for local club, Tuggeranong United. “I have always loved soccer ever since I was a little girl,” Jessie says. “I certainly have my parents to thank for putting in so much effort – playing taxi driver, flying me around the country to play rep, standing out in the freezing cold at training and games – I wouldn’t be where I am today without their support.” Jessie says she loves playing for Canberra “because this is where I grew up. I couldn’t think of anything better than representing the place I live and all my friends and family who live here”. Canberra United takes on Sydney FC at McKellar Park on Sunday 5 January 4pm. 42

MOVIES I grew up watching Disney movies at my Grandma and Pa’s house so my favourite thing to do on the weekend is to sit on the couch and watch a Disney classic.

SUMMER Warm weather makes me happy. I love seeing people outside exercising and enjoying life. My happy place is definitely at the beach in summer.
