BUSHFIRE
CRISIS CANBERRA GASPS FOR BREATH AS COUNTRY BURNS
Canberra Weekly contents
thursday 09 january 2020
This week...
Usually I start the New Year with a sense of optimism and a handful of resolutions that are achieved to varying degrees, or not. However, with the continuing bushfire crisis literally consuming vast tracts of our wide brown land and a heavy toxic bushfire smoke haze blanketing the national capital, this time I witnessed a vexing mix of emotions instead. There was and is a sense of feeling somewhat overwhelmed by the sheer scale of the disaster in its size, duration and capacity for devastation. Infinite gratitude for the incredibly brave firefighters, emergency responders, community heroes and support crews who have been battling fires around the country in valiant efforts to save lives, primarily, and livestock, wildlife and property where safe to do so. Compassion for the many families and communities who have lost loved ones, including volunteer firefighters who paid the ultimate price. Empathy for the many thousands who have lost their homes, businesses, livelihoods and community assets, such as schools. Disgust at the low acts of looters and scammers preying on vulnerable people (make sure your donation counts by donating to registered charitable organisations experienced in disaster recovery). Meanwhile, the extraordinary outpouring of generosity from people across Australia and the world helps to restore one’s faith in humanity and shines a gentle light amidst the doom and gloom. Please take care and stay safe.

NSW South Coast suffers through bushfire crisis The NSW South Coast has been devastated by bushfires over the summer, and despite a reprieve earlier in the week with light rain, conditions are expected to again deteriorate by 10 January. Over 1,500 homes have been destroyed across the State this fire season, and at the time of going to print, the death toll from the bushfires in NSW is at 20 people,
eight of whom have died on the South Coast since 30 December. On Monday 6 January, residents from Eden in the south to Batemans Bay in the north were allowed to return home after being evacuated on 2 January. Batemans Bay resident Dene Lewthwaite said everything on the coast is “pretty raw” at the moment. “I’m in Surf Beach … It got

Canberra gasps for breath as bushfires burn A State of Alert was declared for the ACT on Thursday 2 January, with ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr acknowledging it was still in place on Monday 6 January. He said this is to allow Canberrans to prepare in case of an emergency. As at 8.46am on Tuesday 4
7 January, the Bureau of Meteorology was forecasting temperatures around the low 30s for the week in Canberra with the exception of Friday 10 January, which is forecast to hit 38 oC. While hot, it falls short of Canberra’s highest ever
evacuated 9 o’clock New Year’s Eve once we had fire coming over the hill toward our place. “Since then we’ve had no power, and the phones on and off over the last week and we had to evacuate Saturday with the second wave of fire. “The main thing, the RFS has been great … The community down here has rallied together and that’s great, it’s great to see us helping each other,” Mr Lewthwaite said. He said the long-term effects of the fires will also be felt by local businesses on the NSW South Coast. “This six-week period is the busiest time of year where they make their money to keep them going through the quieter months; it will certainly affect a number of businesses throughout the area. “I drove into town today (7 January) and most of the businesses here have reopened for the first time, the ones that can anyway, and have power, but quite a few have been
burnt out in the industrial area.” Fires at Currowan and the Clyde Mountain eased on Monday 6 January as light rain fell across the fire grounds. On Tuesday 7 January, the large Currowan bushfire, burning west of Kangaroo Valley in the north, Braidwood in the west, and Batemans Bay in the south, was being controlled at 303,648 ha. The smaller Clyde Mountain fire was out of control at a size of 82,546 ha. On the afternoon of 7 January, 133 fires were burning across NSW, and while cooler weather has provided a reprieve from the diabolical conditions seen over the weekend of 4-5 January, conditions were expected to deteriorate on Friday 10 January. “No one is under the illusion that this game is over, there is still a lot of work to do and ongoing risk,” said NSW RFS community safety officer, Marty Webster. - Denholm Samaras
temperature of 44.0 oC that was recorded on Saturday 4 January. The previous record was 42.2oC recorded on 1 February 1968. Canberra also recorded its warmest December day on record when the temperature reached 41.1oC on Saturday 21 December 2019. The previous high was 39.2oC recorded on 21 December 1994. Although weather conditions improved on Monday 6 January, and the smoke that was impacting the city had moved away, Mr Barr said “there is a risk it may come back” and encouraged the community to minimise their exposure to bushfire smoke by staying indoors. The ACT Government acknowledges that many Canberrans are anxious about their health due to exposure to smoke. The ACT Government has supplied face masks to the Early Morning Centre for individuals sleeping rough. Face masks have also been offered through
Housing ACT to tenants that need them. They have also accepted a supply of P2 face masks from the Commonwealth Government. The supply of 100,000 masks were being delivered to pharmacies and expected to be available for people who are most at risk of the health impacts of exposure to smoke from Tuesday 7 January. This includes people with existing chronic lung and heart conditions, pregnant women and people over 65 years of age. Masks will also be available through the Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health Service for their clients. However, ACT Health recommends that people with lung conditions and chronic heart conditions should seek advice from their medical practitioner prior to using these masks. ACT Health’s advice to the community also remains that the best way to avoid exposure to the smoke is by staying indoors (with windows and doors closed).

news Canberrans rally to help fire ravaged communities The generosity of Canberrans is always evident in the wake of disasters and tragedies, and the bushfire crisis currently ravaging the east coast of Australia is proving to be no different. Canberrans have rallied around those from fire-affected communities, offering accommodation, supplies and connection through a Facebook group, started only last week, that has already helped countless people in need. The group’s founder, Alison Elliot, set up the page on Wednesday last week (1 January), in response to the mass evacuation of the NSW South Coast – believed to be the largest peacetime evacuation in Australian history. She said she saw a post on a Canberra noticeboard Facebook page from someone who had left
the South Coast and had nowhere to stay in the Capital. “All these people were offering their homes for them to stay,” Ms Elliot said. She said she started the group as there appeared to be no coordinated response for accommodation for the influx of people into the ACT. She said “if this is the start of people being told to get out of there and being told to head to Canberra … this is going to get bigger and bigger”. Ms Elliot said the group was initially flooded with offers for accommodation, and not many requests, but that soon changed, with people needing accommodation that also had space for caravans, horses and other pets. “We’re also seeing other offers too; people are opening up

their houses for people to have a shower, have something to eat or to just have a break if they’re passing through Canberra.” She said people have offered activity vouchers to help keep kids entertained while they’re here, as well as things like food, fuel vouchers and clothing. One man has even donated the use of his old car, currently being used by a family who evacuated to Canberra, and after that it will be used by a couple in Bodalla who lost their home – all organised via the Facebook group with 9,100plus members – and counting! Ms Elliot said as well as helping to match those in need with offers from the community, the group has also fostered social connection, especially for those isolated due to the fires. “They’ve found a lot of comfort
in being a part of the group and watching people getting help … It’s one of the places where they can keep track of what’s going on. “It’s just amazing the things that are going on in there. “I already knew that Canberra was a really generous place, I’m not surprised by it all, but it’s just amazing to see the level of generosity of people. A lot of people are saying to us ‘we just want to help in some way’.” For more information, find the ‘Bushfire emergency accommodation in Canberra’ group on Facebook. The group is no longer accepting offers for accommodation, due to the large number of offers already, and is focusing on matching offers with requests from those in need. - Libby Kimber

news Simple checks to avoid ‘unethical plumbers’ Unethical plumbers have recently tarnished the profession, with Master Plumbers ACT keen to defend its trade while informing consumers how to protect themselves. Executive Officer of Master Plumbers ACT, Leigh Watson, said the association was aware that there have been instances recently in the ACT where customers have been charged unfairly. This follows on from a recent ACT Supreme Court ruling which ordered Your Local Plumbing Group Pty Ltd pay a $100,000 penalty for making false and misleading representations, and engaging in misleading and deceptive conduct, in relation to the advertising of plumbing services in the ACT. Ms Watson said those seeking to engage a plumber can do some simple checks to avoid being victims
of unethical plumbers starting by checking that the plumber has a registered business through the Australian Business Registration website. “A plumber’s ABN should be listed on their website and in advertising,” Ms Watson said. “Consumers should then check that the plumber is registered on the Access Canberra List of Licenced Plumbers – if you can’t find their name here then they are not licensed. This licence number should also appear on all advertising. “Lastly, they can do the final internet check of the name to bring up any customer reviews. Once the plumber arrives at your residence, they also need to show you proof of their Public Liability Insurance.” Ms Watson also warned about handymen undertaking various aspects of plumbing work.
“This is not legal and more than likely will not be covered by insurance. Even a simple job such as taps installed by a handyman would not be passed by an inspector,” she said. Overall, Ms Watson said the easiest way for a consumer to ensure they are dealing with “an honest and ethical plumbing business” is to choose a member of a reputable industry association, such as Master Plumbers ACT. “To sustain a membership with the ACT Master Plumbers Association, a plumber needs
to provide proof of current Plumbing License, Business Registration, Public Liability Insurance – as well as abide by a Code of Ethics. So by engaging them, the checks are already done for you,” Ms Watson said. “On top of that, if we receive multiple complaints about members, they are investigated in a prompt manner and, if found to be unethical, unreasonable, have a poor quality of work or have lost business registration or credentials, they have their membership revoked.”
Braidwood escalates water restrictions Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council has announced that from Friday 10 January, water restrictions in Braidwood will escalate to Level 4. The extended dry period, and pressure placed on local water sources from bushfires in the area, has seen Braidwood’s off-river water storage drop to a concerning level. Council estimates that pumping from the Shoalhaven River will no longer be possible after 10 January, leaving only the off-river
storage for town use. That storage currently sits at around 82% of the 72ML capacity and is reducing by approximately 1% every two to three days. Council will commence transporting potable water to Braidwood in mid-January. Bungendore will remain on Stage 1 restrictions. Captains Flat and Queanbeyan will remain on permanent water conservation measures. Queanbeyan’s water is sourced from Icon Water and usage complies with ACT water restriction policy.

Air quality forces cancellations A number of sporting events recently scheduled for the ACT have been forced to postpone, cancel or relocate due to the poor air quality across the region from bushfire smoke. Last month, umpires at the Big Bash League game at Manuka Oval on 21 December deemed conditions too hazardous to continue, cancelling the Adelaide Strikers versus Sydney Thunder match during the second innings before a result could be determined. On Friday 3 January, Tennis ACT announced the decision to relocate the Apis Canberra International, scheduled for 6-12 January, to Bendigo, Victoria due to the ongoing bushfire activity in the region. Also on 3 January, Football Federation Australia (FFA) announced that the W-League fixture between Canberra United and Sydney FC and the Y-League fixture between Canberra United and the Newcastle Jets on Sunday 5 January would be postponed. An announcement on when these matches will be rescheduled is to be made at a later date. The Canberra Cavalry’s round seven Australian Baseball League (ABL) series against Adelaide scheduled for 2-5 January was cancelled, with the
ABL to outline the impact of the cancelled series on the playoffs and roster points. The Canberra Cavalry hosted a “live stream-athon” via their Facebook page on 3 January to raise funds for the NSW Rural Fire Service. The WNBL cancelled the Round 12 match between the UC Capitals and Perth Lynx, due to be played on Sunday 5 January at the AIS Arena in Canberra. Further discussions between the WNBL and respective teams will determine a solution on the most fair and equitable date to replay the game if both the teams and the league feel it necessary. In terms of upcoming events, Triathlon ACT and Triathlon Australia announced on Tuesday 7 January the cancellation of the Capital Trilogy Triathlon and the adjoining scheduled Junior Development Camp scheduled for the weekend of 18-19 January. Triathlon ACT will process refunds over the next two weeks for all registered athletes. Meanwhile, Capital Football is hopeful the 2020 FFA National Futsal Championships, due to be held in Canberra on 13-17 January, will go ahead as planned. As at Tuesday 7 January, discussions were continuing with venue providers in regards to the delivery of the event.

How to make 2020 your best health year ever From my experience working with patients, the unequivocal key to making 2020 your best health year ever involves changing your habits. Most of what we do on a daily basis is habitual; from driving our cars, to what we wear, to what we eat and drink, and even to what and how we think. These are generally directed by automated pathways in our brain and bodies, which often make these nerve pathways subconscious. This means that we are often unaware of what and why we are doing certain activities, they have simply become a habit. The key, then, to improving our health, involves changing these subconscious habits by identifying and addressing them, one at a time. Identifying your habits The first step in changing your habits it to identify them. There are usually three components to a habit – they are repetitive (something you do on a regular basis), automatic, and situational (performed as part of a
specific situation, e.g. smoking on the way home from work in the car). My suggestion is to start by identifying three habits that you feel are negatively impacting on your health. Find alternative habits To change our negative habits, we ideally need to swap them for more positive ones. Habits simply can’t be broken; they need to be replaced. For example, instead of saying, “I’ll cut down on how many wines I drink each evening”, we are more likely to succeed if we say to ourselves, “I’m going to swap one glass of wine for a glass of sparkling water”. That way, we are still going through the motions of drinking something, instead of depriving ourselves completely, which can work against our efforts. Addressing your habits Once you’ve identified your negative habits, and thought of alternative, more positive habits, how do you make those new habits stick?

Start working on the ‘easy-tochange’ one: this is the habit that involves minimal sacrifice. This will start the process of change and create momentum. Aim small not big: similarly, breaking your habit into smaller, more achievable steps can help to create confidence that you will succeed. For example, if your eventual goal is to do 30 push-ups a day, then starting with just one pushup a day and building up slowly over a defined period of time will be much more achievable. Know your motivators: know what would motivate you to change i.e. what would be your reward for changing a certain habit? My suggestion is to make it a non-food/ drink reward such as an experience or a small gift. Create a fail-proof plan: don’t set yourself up for failure by relying solely on willpower. Willpower will only get you to the start line of change but won’t help you win the race. If, for instance, reducing how much chocolate you’re eating
BY DR CRIS BEER, AUTHOR OF YOUR BEST YEAR AHEAD
is a health goal this year, make sure you avoid keeping chocolate in the house, that way you aren’t ever tempted. Be accountable: making yourself accountable to someone else, or even just a written declaration to yourself in the form of a goal list, can help keep you on track. Repeat, repeat, repeat: practice makes perfect when it comes to replacing negative habits with positive ones. This helps to set in the new habit. By changing your habits, you really can make 2020 your best health year ever! For more step-by-step advice around positive habits to make this year, see Dr Cris Beer’s new book, Your Best Year Ahead.

Moroccan sweet potato chickpeas and couscous with chermoula Community: New Edition by Hetty McKinnon, published by Plum, RRP $39.99. Photography by Luisa Brimble. Serves: 4-6
Kick-starters
This week, food writer Libby Kimber brings you some nourishing recipes to kick-start the New Year.
Overnight summer oats with roasted nectarines Recipe courtesy of Australian Summer Stonefruit | @aussiesummerstonefruit Serves: 4 Prep: 10 mins Cook: 15 mins 2/3 cup natural sliced almonds 1 cup rolled oats 1 large Granny Smith apple, quartered, cored and grated 2 cups unsweetened almond milk, plus extra to serve (optional) 1/2 cup sultanas 1/4 cup currants 3 nectarines, cut into 12 wedges 1/4 cup maple syrup, plus extra to drizzle
Roughly chop 1/3 cup almonds and place into a bowl. Add rolled oats, apple, almond milk, sultanas and currants. Stir until combined. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Preheat oven to 200째C (180째C fan forced). Line a baking tray with baking paper. Combine nectarine wedges and maple syrup in a bowl. Spread on prepared baking tray and bake for 15 minutes or until nectarines are golden and softened. Spread remaining almonds on a second tray and bake for the last 5 minutes of cooking. Stir extra milk into porridge, if you like, and spoon into serving bowls. Top with roasted nectarines and almonds. Drizzle with extra maple syrup.
5 sweet potatoes (about 2.5kg), peeled and cut into 1cm cubes 3 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil Sea salt and black pepper 400g couscous 2 tsp vegetable stock powder 30g butter, cubed 500g cooked chickpeas (about 2 cans), drained 1 Tbsp finely chopped preserved lemon rind 1/2 cup flaked almonds, lightly toasted Chermoula 2 garlic cloves 2 tsp ground cumin 2 tsp paprika 1/2 tsp cayenne pepper Grated zest and juice of 1 lemon 1 tsp sea salt 3 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 cup flat-leaf parsley leaves, finely chopped 1/2 cup coriander leaves, finely chopped Preheat oven to 200째C. Place the sweet potato cubes on a baking tray and toss them with 2 tablespoons
of the olive oil and a good pinch of salt and pepper. Roast for about 20 minutes, stirring once, until tender. To make the chermoula, pound together the garlic, cumin, paprika, cayenne, lemon zest, lemon juice and salt using a mortar and pestle. Transfer to a bowl and whisk in the olive oil until well combined. Stir in the parsley and coriander. Alternatively, you can use a food processor to mix together all the ingredients. Reduce the oven temperature to 120째C. Place the couscous in a shallow heatproof bowl, along with the remaining olive oil. Mix the vegetable stock into 600ml of boiling water and pour over the couscous, stirring well. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let stand for 10 minutes. Uncover and dot the couscous with the butter, then cover with foil and heat in the oven for 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and fluff up the grains with a fork. Combine the sweet potato with the couscous, chickpeas and preserved lemon and gently fold through the chermoula. Transfer to a large serving dish and sprinkle over the flaked almonds.
Date and blueberry bruffins SuperFastDiet by Victoria Black and Gen Davidson, published by Macmillan Australia, RRP $34.99, Photography by Rob Palmer. Preheat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Line six holes of a ¾ cup muffin tin with paper cases. Place the flour, bicarbonate of soda and dates in a bowl and rub with your fingers to mix well, making sure the date pieces don’t clump together and each piece is coated in flour.
2 cups (300g) self-raising flour ½ tsp bicarbonate of soda 50g pitted medjool dates, finely chopped 2 x 120g tubs unsweetened apple puree 125g blueberries 300g Greek-style yoghurt 1 Tbsp pure maple syrup
20
Fold in the apple puree, blueberries and yoghurt until the mixture is just combined – don’t overmix or your bruffins will be tough. Spoon the mixture evenly into the prepared muffin holes. Bake the bruffins for 35-40 minutes or until a skewer inserted in the centre comes out clean. Immediately brush the tops with the maple syrup, then rest in the tin for 5 minutes. Serve warm, or cool and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 2 months.

Patricia Piccinini’s Skywhale returns to Canberra skies in March. Photo: Martin Ollman.
Five cultural events to watch out for While Canberra’s event calendar is even quieter than usual this January, there’s plenty of premier entertainment coming to town over the coming months. CW arts editor Denholm Samaras looks at five cultural events to get along to in early 2020. Skywhales: every heart sings The Balnaves Contemporary Series National Gallery of Australia, 7 March – 30 May While it divided public opinion at the time and was the butt of many lacklustre jokes throughout Canberra’s 100th year, acclaimed Canberra artist Patricia Piccinini’s polarising and controversial Skywhale has aged like fine wine. Since being unveiled to commemorate Canberra’s centenary in 2013, the infamous balloon has flown around the world, and was fittingly donated to the National Gallery of Australia recently, the site where she took her first flight. NGA Director Nick Mitzevich described Skywhale as “one of the most talked about artworks in the history of Australia” when it was donated to the Gallery. And in March, it will gloriously take to Canberra’s skies again, accompanied by Piccinini’s new companion hot air balloon, Skywhalepapa. Together, they will form a skywhale family 22
that will be launched near the Gallery, and take flight over Canberra eight times during the exhibition period. The sculptures will then float across the skies of Australia as a National Gallery travelling exhibition. Details: nga.gov.au

A 7-foot tall interactive audio-visual installation allows visitors to hear the extraordinary first-hand stories from those on the frontline of the battle for truth. As part of the exhibition, the former Parliamentary Broadcasting and ABC Studio were restored to reflect the studio in 1988. This studio has never before been open to the public. time out Book talk Jeff Popple reviews three enjoyable novels about paranoia, romance and serial killers to distract you from the heat this summer. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Deep State by Chris Hauty Simon & Schuster, $32.99
Chris Hauty’s debut thriller revolves around the idea that deep inside Washington there are influential members of government agencies, the military and the establishment involved in the secret manipulation of government policy. When the populist, controversial and divisive Richard Monroe is elected as President, the Deep State decides that he must be controlled or removed. The only person standing in their way is a 25-year-old West Wing intern and ex-Army soldier, Hayley Chill, who stumbles across the conspiracy following the murder of the White House Chief of Staff. Hauty’s politics aside, this is an enjoyably light and twisty thriller read with which to pass the time inside.

The Lost Summers of Driftwood by Vanessa McCausland Harper Collins, $29.99
Set on the south coast of New South Wales, Vanessa McCausland’s novel explores old secrets, lost loves and the chance for new beginnings. When Phoebe’s life falls apart, she retreats to her family’s abandoned holiday cottage on the river near Bateman’s Bay. There she deals with the legacy of her sister’s suicide a year ago and the rekindling of an old childhood love. As the river begins to give up its secrets, Phoebe becomes caught up in new mysteries. This is an evocative, well written and engaging tale that is given extra poignancy by the recent events on the coast.
Nine Elms by Robert Bryndza Sphere, $29.99
Kate Marshall was a rising star in the London Metropolitan police force until her horrific encounter with the Nine Elms serial killer, which ended her career. Now 16 years later, Kate lives a quiet life on the English coast until a copycat begins to follow in the steps of the Nine Elms killer. Suddenly, Kate has to call on her long-neglected skills as an investigator in order to catch him before she becomes his final victim. Bryndza is a good writer of dark, British police novels and Nine Elms is a fast moving and compelling thriller that will appeal to his many fans.
Now showing The Gentlemen (MA15+) The odious Fletcher (Hugh Grant) meets with Raymond (Charlie Hunnam) in an attempt to sell him his ‘movie script’. The script highlights Raymond’s boss, Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey), as he is attempting to cash out his highly profitable London marijuana empire. Director Guy Ritchie has had a bit of a dry run of late. Bursting onto the scene with the quickpaced, cool and hilarious Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch, Ritchie has had little success in moving away from the ‘Norf’ London gangster genre: Swept Away was an unmitigated disaster, Aladdin was an odd experience, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. was not picked up as a franchise starter, nor was the video-game/Marvel movie inspired King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.
Going back to his roots, Ritchie thrusts the audience quickly into the thick of things as Grant’s greasy Fletcher attempts to blackmail Raymond and Mickey. We’re thrown into the story via a creative, albeit unreliable narrator as we learn the ins-and-outs of Mickey, his drug operation and the sea of criminals who not only want to buy Mickey out, but to swindle him out of the game altogether. McConaughey thankfully keeps his Southern drawl while all others are heavy on the cockney: Michelle Dockery hilariously stands worlds apart from her Downton Abbey days. Effortlessly dancing between the quick-paced main action and the sparring narrators telling it, Ritchie delivers an experience not unlike Tarantino and Scorsese. Verdict: A surprisingly entertaining effort. Vintage Guy Richie. 4.5 stars. - Luke McWilliams

The Pleasure Trap: mastering weight loss, health and happiness Join one of the world’s leading evolutionary psychologists this February for a talk shedding light on the hidden force undermining our health and happiness.
A
ccording to preeminent evolutionary psychologist Dr Doug Lisle, it’s both the number one personal goal and the biggest single cause of psychological angst amongst those living in the developed world. Every day, people are sold solutions to it that harbour little to no results or temporary solutions – be they fad diets, cleanses or ‘fat-shredding’ exercise programs. “People certainly want to make more money, and want their kids to be successful, but the most common, most pervasive goal of people today in the first world is to lose weight,” says Dr Lisle. A thought leader in evolutionary theory and human psychology, Dr Lisle says the root cause of weight gain and other self-destructive behaviours can be attributed to a psychological phenomenon known as ‘the pleasure trap’. “It’s really the key to understanding basically all addiction processes,” he says. “It also helps us to understand why it’s difficult to do some other things that might be very good for us to do, like get in better physical condition, or get our lives organised in certain ways.” He says the pleasure trap exists due to the fact our deep innate biology was designed for an environment of scarcity. “We’re now facing an environment of not only abundance, but what we’re going to call supernormal food, or supernormal stimuli,” Dr Lisle continues. “Because of that situation, we naturally will walk into this trap because our instincts will fool us, and that will cause people to be very puzzled as to why they’re behaving in a self-destructive way. “The first step to actually extricating yourself from the trap is to understand the trap a little more deeply.” Dr Lisle will extensively cover this phenomenon
at an upcoming talk in Canberra this February called The Pleasure Trap - Mastering the Hidden Force that Undermines Health and Happiness. “The ideas that I’m going to be talking about are very sensible; they’re straight forward although they are counter-intuitive in some ways. “The less baggage that a person brings to understanding this, the better … If you don’t have a degree in social science you’re probably better off.” Since completing his Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of Virginia, Dr Lisle’s decorated career has seen him work as a lecturer in psychology at Stanford University, and as a forensic psychologist in both the Texas and California criminal justice systems. Today, Dr Lisle is the psychologist for the McDougall Wellness Program in Santa Rosa, California. Deeply dedicated to exploring the mysteries of human behaviour from fresh, uncharted waters, Dr Lisle’s research in evolutionary psychology and its impact on health, happiness and the pursuit of pleasure has generated critical acclaim for many years. In 2003, Dr Lisle co-authored a book on the phenomenon he’ll be discussing in Canberra titled The Pleasure Trap, and has subsequently lectured across the world to swathes of health professionals on the topic. He says this talk will greatly benefit people who’ve had the common experience of struggling with weight gain, experiencing short-term successes only by methods requiring semi-starvation. “If these people talk to a psychologist about it or take in any mainstream media they’ll be told they’ve got underlying emotional dynamics: they had a rough childhood, they were comforted at their grandmother’s house with chocolate cookies and

that’s why that’s comfort food for them, and that means love, and food means love, and they were short of love … there’s no end to these discussions, and they’re all 100% wrong. “Science has clearly spoken on this issue, and that perspective, emotional eating, is a total red herring. “It’s one that makes some degree of institutive sense because people are so puzzled as to why it is that they continue to behave essentially indulgently and self-destructively, and that’s what the pleasure trap is about,” Dr Lisle says.

Mother-daughter duo Lisa Bonet and ZoĂŤ Kravitz looked effortlessly chic, as always. Bonet opted for an embroidered, boho-style gown from Fendi, while Kravitz oozed elegance in a polka-dot gown from Saint Laurent.
Golden Globes
In the first major red carpet event for the year, celebrities donned their finest for the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards on 5 January. Here’s our round-up of some of our favourite dresses (and non-dresses) from the event.
Jodie Comer: The Killing Eve star brought the colour, in an emerald green Mary Katrantzou dress, paired with a yellow feather clutch and pink shoes.
Zoey Deutch stunned in Fendi, the actress donning a bright yellow jumpsuit matched with silver and blue jewels.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge: The Fleabag writer and star took to the red carpet in a suit from Ralph & Russo, which is to be auctioned off for bushfire relief.
Saoirse Ronan: The actress kept it simple with a metallic dress from Celine, minimal jewellery and a stunning natural beauty look.
Booksmart and Unbelievable star Kaitlyn Dever looked radiant as she arrived in a floral gown by Valentino.
Amy Poehler: The comedian and actress made a change to her usual red carpet look, donning a belted, glittering gown from Sergio Hudson.
Glenn Close: The A-list veteran was the epitome of Hollywood glamour, in a navy velvet gown from Armani Privé.

2020 trends What’s trending for the beginning of the decade?
Pose star Billy Porter made waves on the Oscars red carpet in February 2019, in a tuxedo dress by Christian Siriano. Getty.
Gender-neutral: Pinterest says demand for gender-neutral options is on the rise. They say Gen Zers tend to expect more genderneutral options, while people are searching more for gender-neutral options for “both everyday needs and milestone events”. Searches for unisex kids’ clothes are up 119%, androgynous wedding wear up 51%, tuxedo dresses up 99% and searches for gender-neutral haircuts increased by 625%. Sustainability: It’s not surprising that people are looking towards more “conscious consumption” and to reduce waste. Pinterest says searches for thrifted wedding dresses and second-hand fashion are both up, at 41% and 38% respectively.
Hear the soundtrack of life Wellness: People are looking for ways to incorporate wellness into their everyday life, with a range of searches on the rise. These include: social media detox (+314%), mood-booster playlists (+85%), and embracing being single (+49%). There is also a big push towards getting outside and into nature, to lower stress levels and increase energy. Searches for hiking fashion are up 194% – think layers and boots, designed for comfort. Out of this world: Space-related searches are up, for everything from parties to STEM activities. For the fashion conscious, Pinterest has seen increased interest in clothing with NASA logos, constellation piercings, space tattoos and planet-inspired makeup – think purples, blues and blacks. ‘90s revival: The ‘90s are back, baby! Nostalgia reigns supreme, with searches for grunge fashion (+292%), lip gloss and liner (+144%), hair clips 90s (+930%), 90s braids hairstyles (+329%), 90s streetwear (+277%) and scrunchies (+6,309%) all way up, with no signs of slowing down.

Coastal getaway Bermagui NSW 4039 Tathra-Bermagui Road This coastal gem sits on 25 acres, just across the road from beautiful and secluded beaches. “The property is sort of split in two sections,” says LJ Hooker Narooma sales manager, Steven Hutcheson. “One part of the property could be classified as a fantastic five-acre block with a spectacular home, great gardens, incredible views, huge shed and a manager’s quarters, big dam and barbecue shed … The other 20 acres is primarily a wetland that is home to over 80 different species of birds and other wildlife. “When the wetlands open to the ocean, this property quite literally
has the coastline running through the middle of it. The owners have put in a DA to council to have eco cabins approved for the south end of the property that would look over these unique wetlands.” Inside, the custom-built threebedroom home offers modern interiors, with an open-plan kitchen, Manna Gum hardwood floors and a main bedroom suite with an enormous walk-in robe and separate study area. There’s also a tiled outdoor courtyard, established vegetable gardens, large dam and a bird hide. Hutcheson says this property
would be “ideal for sea-changers” or would be a “spectacular holiday home” – the property has an onsite manager who takes care of the lawns, basic maintenance and looks after the property while the current owners are away. “This would obviously be an ideal situation for a holiday home to make use of an onsite manager,” Hutcheson says. He says the property offers privacy and location, just three minutes from the famous ‘Bermi Pub’. “You are directly across the road
from the beach, one minute north of Cuttagee Lake and three minutes south of Bermagui. “The owners do put the house on Airbnb when they go to Melbourne over Christmas so the opportunity to make some holiday rental income also exists.”

Executive estate Murrumbateman NSW 39 Jiparu Drive This contemporary property in the NSW town of Murrumbateman is nothing short of spectacular. According to ACT and NSW licensed agent from Ray White Canberra, Mark Johnstone, the “architectural design and floorplan provide functionality for the modern family, but it is also an entertainer’s delight and provides holiday resort style living”. “It features 3m-high coffered ceilings, blue stone feature walls, designer kitchen, argonfilled double glazing and double insulation on external walls, plus double insulation on roller door to the garage providing an outstanding energy rating of six stars,” Johnstone says. “The home features a lowmaintenance 9m x 4.5m mineral filtered solar heated pool, providing not only summer fun, but a very relaxing view from the main living area. To complete the package, in addition to the double garage under main roofline, there is a
lined and insulated metal double garage currently fitted out as home gym/man cave, also ideal for car enthusiasts.” The inclusions just keep coming, with the home also boasting, among other features, solid Queensland spotted gum flooring, slow combustion fireplace and a gourmet kitchen which includes a walk-in pantry, double oven and a wine fridge. Perfect for entertainers, 39 Jiparu Drive includes approximately 270sqm of internal space, with the main living area adjoining the covered alfresco entertaining space – complete with an outdoor kitchenette, wine fridge, heaters and built-in TV and speakers. “This home suits a variety of buyers as it features two generous sized living areas and five bedrooms including a segregated master bedroom,” Johnstone says. “It would suit a growing family or perhaps those families with older teenagers. “Murrumbateman is the perfect rural lifestyle location as it is a close commute to Canberra, yet you can still escape life’s busy pace and enjoy the space of living on a 3.39 acre block. The Jiparu estate itself is a prestigious estate and well known for architecturally-designed, executive homes,” he says.

Melissa McCarthy (pictured) plays a maligned pencil-pusher working for the CIA, who’s often overlooked in favour of the shoot-’em-up agents in the field. But when her partner (Jude Law) goes missing in action, it’s up to her and her undercover alter egos to infiltrate a smuggling ring led by a notorious arms dealer (Rose Byrne). Smart and hilarious in equal measure.

pick of the week Unforigven Monday, 7MATE, 8.30pm, M (1992)
Clint Eastwood (pictured) certainly knows his place in the pantheon of cowboy movies. By subverting every rule of his legendary “man with no name” character, he comes up with a tense and thrilling masterpiece. A retired gunslinger (Eastwood) reluctantly takes on one last job, which puts them in the sights of a malevolent smalltown sheriff (a brilliant Gene Hackman).

I, Tonya charts the life and career of infamous figure skater Tonya Harding, which includes, of course, the bizarre attack orchestrated in 1994 by her ex-husband on Harding’s rival Nancy Kerrigan. The film provides a platform that showcases Margot Robbie’s (pictured) prodigious acting talent, and she was duly nominated for an Oscar for her dynamite performance. Far from being just a movie about ice skating, the film explores issues of domestic abuse and mother-daughter relationships. >i<

celebrity birthday LIAM HEMSWORTH
13 January 1990
Liam will be governed by the planet Mars in 2020, which will make him pushy and energetic; the upshot is he needs to be gentle in conveying his ideas and offering his views. He must avoid arguments if he wants to improve his relationships. If he feels changes need to be made, he needs to discuss them with his loved ones. He can work through issues by creating a feeling of togetherness and an inspirational pathway for those closest to him.

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN
With Venus entering Pisces from
this year could change your outlook
With the full moon in your sign on 10 January, be careful of what you say and how you act. Not everyone may be tolerant of your temper or arrogance. Unless you want someone special to exit your life permanently, be mindful of your behaviour and think before you speak.
Mars is in your house of short distance journeys until 17 February, energising you so it’s almost impossible for you to sit still for any length of time. If you’re really lucky, this could be due to the fact that you’re rushed off your feet with social occasions to attend.
on life completely.
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG
SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV
Happy Birthday Capricorn! The sun, new moon and Mercury are all energising your financial house, placing the focus on ways to increase your cash and income which will not be too difficult as opportunities will be all around you. However, you must be careful of the urge to splurge unnecessarily.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY
Venus is in your career house from 14 January to 8 February. It seems as though certain blocks that may have prevented you from moving forward career wise are going to be removed. The planets are suggesting that you have what it takes to solve a tricky financial situation.
With the New Moon, Mercury and Venus in your 4th house, the focus is on your home and family life. There is certainly going to be an element of change which may include renovations, investment or move of property, either for you or close friends or family.
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC
With Mercury in your house of intimate relationships until 14 January, you will be forced to confront certain emotional issues head on, otherwise, you may be forced into eventually making decisions you will regret. It could be challenging, but the impact you are about to make will delight everyone.
Mars moved into your own sign on 4 January, energising your whole chart. You begin a part of the year where you must be prepared to accept opportunities that come your way. You’re going to have plenty of confidence and your sunny disposition will increase your social activity.
14 January to 8 February, you’ll become aware you can no longer ignore certain harsh realities. 2020 will see you moving on socially to a more innovative group of friends. A surprisingly disruptive element
It will be necessary for you to learn new skills if, for instance, you were to move house at this time, you would have to come to grips with interior decorating or gardening. You may learn to sew, drive a car or bring your work skills up to date.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE Mars moved into your house of relationships on 4 January where it will remain until 17 February, so if anything is going to stir up those hormones, it is this configuration. However, try not to act impulsively; otherwise you may live to regret it.
AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB With Mercury and the new moon falling directly in your sign this month, it is time for fresh starts in all areas of your life. Many of you will be moving home, changing jobs or perhaps moving states or countries this year. It’s time to take greater care of your health.
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR With Venus in your own sign on 14 January, you’re going to be looking good and feeling good. It is likely to be either a highly romantic time or a fun sociable one. Even at work you are light-hearted and jovial, which makes the hours positively whizz past.

French icon Inspired by real events, Seberg (M) tells the story of Breathless star and darling of the French New Wave, Jean Seberg (Kristen Stewart), who in the late 1960s was targeted by the illegal FBI surveillance program COINTELPRO. Seberg’s political and romantic involvement with civil rights activist Hakim Jamal made her a target of the FBI’s ruthless attempts to disrupt, discredit and expose the Black Power movement. An ambitious young FBI agent, Jack Solomon, is assigned to watch her, only to find his fate dangerously interwoven with her own. In cinemas 30 January.
Enter to WIN Canberra Weekly has 5 x Seberg in-season double passes to be won. To enter, email competitions@canberraweekly.com.au with ‘Seberg’ in the subject field. My favourite things
MUSIC Since starting piano lessons at age five and self-teaching myself the guitar at 13, writing, rehearsing, recording and performing music with my band, Pleased to Jive You (pictured), has been a constant pleasure.
MOVIES AND TV As an avid enthusiast, most of my spare time goes towards either watching or writing TV and movies. I’ve written/ directed/produced two feature films and a TV pilot and have a stockpile of projects that I’m working on bringing to life.
SOCCER Photo Aaron King
A love I had until my late teens, then faded away from, only to come back to during the 2014 World Cup in full force. You’ll find me around Canberra playing outdoor, futsal, summer sixes and nines or up late watching Liverpool games.
Declan Shrubb Filmmaker and musician
Declan Shrubb is a filmmaker and musician from Canberra. A band member of Pleased to Jive You since high school, he’s played alongside everyone from Peking Duk and Hands Like Houses to Aunty Donna. As a filmmaker, Declan was the writer, director and producer of the Screen Canberra supported oz-zom-com Me and My Mates vs the Zombie Apocalypse starring Jim Jefferies and Alex Williamson. His production company, Quippurb, creates sketch comedy, podcasts, short films and music videos. 66
COMEDY I’m obsessed with all things comedy: TV shows, movies, podcasts, sketch, stand-up. I even produce my own stuff with my sketch troupe/production company, Quippurb.
ALEX HOSS Although not an object, she’s been my partner, muse and best friend for half of my life and supports me through all of my artistic, professional and personal endeavours.
