This week...

Catching up with a friend over lunch, we were reflecting on what a strange summer this one has turned out to be. Staying indoors far more than usual this time of year as the bushfire ‘smokewave’ blankets the city in a greyish haze day after day, it feels a bit like a Canberra winter, when you might take refuge indoors from the fog, frost or biting cold, rather than smoke haze. Like me, they had packed a bag just in case they had to leave due to a bushfire emergency, a process that forces you to consider what’s really important to you. The Red Cross [redcross.org.au] advises to pack: an overnight bag with change of clothes and toiletries; medicines and first aid kit; important information such as passport, will, photos and jewellery; mobile phone and charger; water; wool blankets, contact information for your doctor, local government and utilities. I also packed heirloom china from my late grandmothers, a rug my mother crocheted for me, a vintage gown, two silk garments by my favourite designers, and my late grandfather’s painting. What’s precious to you? Reasons to be grateful this past week include widespread rainfall, lunch and dinner catch-ups with friends, blueberry cashew cheesecake, and our stellar CW team managing the workload and deadline day while I’m on leave. Thanks crew.

news Wild weather causes carnage Severe storm activity hit the ACT on Monday 20 January with hail as big as golf balls causing extensive damage to cars, windows and buildings including the iconic Shine Dome. The hailstorm dented the heritage listed Shine Dome’s copper roof tiles and smashed several skylights, exposing the building’s nationally significant scientific archives to the hail and rain. Australian Academy of Science Chief Executive Anna-Maria Arabia said there was no damage to the archives thanks to a rescue effort by staff, who formed a human chain to move the boxed archives to safety. “The extreme weather events of the past few months have demonstrated that fire and storm damage are real and present dangers and this incident has highlighted the urgent need to accelerate the digitisation of this significant and unique historical collection,” Ms Arabia said. “The Academy has been fundraising to have the archives digitised but we have not yet met our target of at least $10 million to achieve this.” The Australian Academy of Science’s heritage-listed Ian Potter House, where staff are based, also suffered extensive damage, with dozens of windows smashed, rendering the building unsafe for staff for the immediate future. Ian Potter House was placed on the ACT Heritage Register in 1998. The vehicles of 34 staff were also severely damaged by the hailstorm and were unable to be driven home. The storm resulted in a record amount of

calls to the ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) with 2,044 calls for assistance, up on the previous record of 998 calls from a windstorm back on 13 January 2017. Over the last two years, the ACT State Emergency Service has averaged an annual storm response of approximately 600 jobs. In an update released at 5pm on Tuesday 21 January the ESA said they had completed 580 jobs with 1,464 outstanding. It will take a number of days to get through every task and the ESA asks that if you no longer need assistance to call 132 500 to cancel your request. On Tuesday 21 January the Insurance Council of Australia declared a catastrophe for damage caused by hail storms that struck eastern Melbourne, Victoria, the ACT and parts of NSW on Sunday 19 and Monday 20 January. Insurers have received more than 29,000 claims (56% from the ACT, 34% from Victoria and 10% from NSW). Losses are estimated at $320 million. About two-thirds of claims are for damage to motor vehicles. Access Canberra has acknowledged that there are a large number of damaged vehicles remaining in government-controlled car parks and roadside parking. They have advised if your car can not be driven, and is clearly damaged from the storm activity, and therefore remains in the parking space, you will not be fined. The National Capital Authority has made a similar commitment for vehicles that remain parked on national land.

Severe storm activity hit Canberra on Monday 20 January with heavy downpours and significant hail causing hail and roof damage, electrical threats and localised flooding.

Insurers have received more than 29,000 claims for damage caused by hail storms nationally with two-thirds of claims for damage to motor vehicles. Image supplied.

Vehicle owners are reminded to remove any valuable items from their vehicles if leaving them on site and to make contact with their insurance companies to arrange the safe removal of their vehicles for repair.

Call for Canberrans to rent out South Coast holiday homes More than $250 million has been donated to charities for Australian bushfire relief in recent weeks, while the Federal Government has allocated $2 billion to the recovery effort. The groundswell of financial and emotional support from around the world has been immense as the rebuilding of affected communities across Australia gets underway. Right here in Canberra, many of us have been supporting the cause in myriad ways. But for Canberrans who own South Coast property, they’re able to assist those who lost their homes get back on their feet in a big way. Harcourts Batemans Bay Director Dene Lewthwaite has called on them to offer up their holiday homes as long-term rentals. For the Canberrans generous enough to participate, Harcourts Batemans Bay will offer 8

a 20% discount on their professional property management fees. They will also be donating to the NSW Rural Fire Service and WIRES. Mr Lewthwaite said he’s keen to rent properties at current market rents. Having been through the 2003 bushfires, he saw how quickly rents and sale prices spiked, adding further anxiety and pressure on those who needed a home while rebuilding. Mr Lewthwaite is hoping to avoid that at the South Coast. Canberra resident Geoff Davis and his family decided to offer up their South Coast holiday home as a long-term rental. “We discussed it as a family and wanted to support the community at the South Coast that has welcomed us into their fold for the close to 20 years we’ve been enjoying holidays down there,” he said. “It’s a practical way for us to provide direct help

and so important because evacuees can’t live in temporary, emergency accommodation during the long haul as they rebuild their lives.” NSW Member for Bega, and Minister for Transport Andrew Constance MP said there’s a need now to free up stock owned by nonresidential rate payers whose homes have survived. “It provides a homeless family with a roof over their head as they get sorted and are able to rebuild on their blocks. “We have people living in caravan parks, hotel rooms, with neighbours, with friends, in sheds. We’ve got to get people placed and one solution to that is freeing up many coastal homes which won’t necessarily have people in them,” he said. - Denholm Samaras

news Australia Day concert to support bushfire relief Fireworks will not be lighting up the skies for this year’s Australia Day celebrations in Canberra and Queanbeyan however there will still be plenty to entertain on Sunday 26 January. The ACT Government made the decision to cancel the fireworks due to the ongoing impacts of bushfires in the region with a morning concert in Commonwealth Park to raise funds for those impacted by bushfires to be the focus of celebrations this year. Three charity organisations will be represented at Sunday’s Australia Day bushfire relief concert –

St Vincent de Paul Society, wildlife rescue service WIRES and mental health charity Lifeline. Both St Vincent de Paul and Lifeline will have a presence at the concert. Cash and electronic donations for all the charities will be taken on the day with online donations able to be made at any time. Barnie van Wyk, CEO of St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn, thanked the community “for their concern and generous assistance of our fellow Australians in crisis so far”. “Rebuilding from natural disaster relies on the kindness of the people in our community. It has been very heartening to see how the community is coming together in these extraordinary circumstances.” The fundraising concert from 10am to 1pm follows the National Flag Raising Ceremony and Citizenship Ceremonies at Rond Terrace and features Japanese Wallpaper, Nicole Millar and Sistas in Song featuring Monica Moore. In addition to stage performances there will be free amusement rides, a glitter bar and roving entertainment plus food trucks offering tasty treats.

A free Australia Day shuttle bus will run on a loop every 10-15 minutes from the city interchange to Commonwealth Park. Parking is available at the Canberra Centre, National Convention Centre and other city carparks. Around the region, Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council (QPRC) also cancelled their annual fireworks display that concludes Queanbeyan’s Australia Day celebrations with the money likely to be donated to bushfire relief. However, there is still a full range of celebrations planned on Sunday 26 January. The day kicks off in Captains Flat at 10am with Australia Day awards and a morning tea at the Captains Flat Community Hall. At the same time, Bungendore celebrations start at the Bungendore Council Chambers with awards and a community BBQ. A lunchtime event in Braidwood will start at 12pm and will see more Australia Day awards announced before the major event in Queanbeyan starts at 4pm. “The Queanbeyan celebrations are the culmination of a great day around our region,” QPRC Mayor Tim Overall said.

news Canberra Pet Rescue branches out to the bush Local organisation Canberra Pet Rescue has branched out to help those affected by the ongoing bushfire crisis. Usually, the Canberra Pet Rescue volunteers would dedicate their time to rescuing cats and dogs from ‘death row’, but the organisation has recently also taken on a bushfire appeal, delivering animal feed, supplies and veterinary services to areas in need, for wildlife, livestock and domestic animals. Volunteer Carolyn Mueller said the organisation mobilised quickly when the bushfires struck, and volunteers have been making daily trips to affected areas since Christmas. So far, the team have made deliveries to Nerriga, Braidwood, Tallaganda, Charleys Forest, Araluen, Mongarlowe, Monga, Tomboye, Cobargo and Yowrie, and have received requests for help from areas as far as Batlow and the Snowy Mountains. “Now that the fires seem to have died down a bit for the moment… were starting to move from response mode to recover mode,” Ms Mueller said. “If we couldn’t get into a dangerous area, we’d either have the RFS escort us or they’d take the

12

provisions in for us. We’re now at a point where we can get to most areas. We’re using Braidwood RFS as a base, so we can get out there and people can get in to pick [supplies] up.” She said the organisation runs entirely on volunteer power, and is a registered charity, so people can be assured “every cent they donate is actually going to the animals... Our focus is very much on response and recovery”. Canberra Pet Rescue is now urgently seeking donations of funds to allow them to purchase animal and livestock feed and wildlife waterers, as well as the use of a 4WD vehicle to travel into rural areas to provide assistance. “We are reaching out to the Canberra community and businesses in the hope that someone will be able to donate a suitable vehicle for this urgent and vital work,” Ms Mueller said. “Any wildlife that have escaped the fires are now at risk of dying from thirst and starvation... Wildlife are probably at the most risk at the moment.” At the time of writing, the appeal had raised over $54,000 of its $100,000 goal.

news Factsheets for smoke haze State of Alert amended Major cities recently choked on thick clouds of hazardous smoke, prompting the release of new factsheets on how best to protect yourself from bushfire smoke. The factsheets have been developed by leading air quality and health expert, Professor Sotiris Vardoulakis from the Australian National University Research School of Population Health. “The existing public health advice on bushfire smoke is mainly tailored to brief air pollution episodes,

typically lasting no longer than one or two days,” Professor Vardoulakis said. “But this is not normal, and we need to urgently do more. People need to be able to access the best information out there simply and quickly.” The ANU factsheets provide the advice and practical tips urgently needed by people exposed to bushfire smoke in their daily lives for short and longer periods. The information is designed to enable the public to make clear and informed decisions . The factsheets include information for those more vulnerable to the smoke, as well as for healthy individuals, and address topics such as being active, facemasks, mental health and medication plans. The State of Alert for the ACT has been amended to rural and remote areas of the ACT only, and will no longer apply to urban and residential areas. ACT Emergency Services Minister Mick Gentleman made the announcement on Monday 20 January after taking into consideration recent improvements

in weather conditions in the region, including recent rainfall and progress in containing fires burning close to the ACT border. Community meetings are expected to be organised for Tharwa and Uriarra Village communities in the coming days, according to the Emergency Services Agency (ESA).

Water relief for Braidwood Temporary water relief is on the way for the NSW country town of Braidwood with Canberra to provide up to 300 kilolitres of water a day. The ACT Government and Icon Water supported a request from Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council (QPRC) to provide temporary water relief to Braidwood

after the town’s water supply driedup due to low inflows and bushfires in the region. Braidwood moved into Stage 4 water restrictions on Friday 10 January. The temporary arrangements will be in place for up to six months as QPRC and the NSW Government develop longer-term solutions to the shortage.

Gas connections will no longer be required in new Canberra suburbs, as part of the ACT Government’s plan for “zero emissions from gas use” by 2045. File image.

Gas no longer required for new suburbs Gas connections will no longer be required for new Canberra suburbs, with the ACT Government releasing a draft variation removing the mandatory requirement. “The fact is, natural gas is a polluting fossil fuel and we must eventually phase it out in favour of clean energy,” said ACT Climate Change and Sustainability

Minister Shane Rattenbury. “Previously gas connections were mandated in new suburbs, and the ACT was the only Australian state or territory to require this. This rule was both outdated and not necessarily beneficial for homeowners. “Removing the requirement for gas will see more Canberrans using electricity instead of gas,

taking advantage of the ACT’s world-leading 100% renewable electricity achievement.” Minister Rattenbury said moving away from gas can see a reduction in household bills, and said a number of Canberrans were already switching from gas, with the average annual household gas consumption dropping by 22% since 2010. The Conservation Council ACT Region has labelled the move a “positive step” but said the ACT Government has wasted the opportunity. “Removing the requirement to put gas into every new development is a positive step, but the Government will miss a great opportunity to prevent the further rollout of the gas network in the ACT going forward, something that would be consistent with their ambitious 2045 zero emissions target,” said executive director Helen Oakey.

“We know from previous experience that removing the mandate alone won’t necessarily stop Evoenergy from proceeding with the rollout of new pipes into suburbs. “The ACT Government has acknowledged that we are facing a climate emergency, the only stateterritory jurisdiction to do so. This was the perfect opportunity for them to take action to ensure that all new developments from here on run on 100% renewable electricity and make it easier to reach our zero emissions target.” The ACT Government plans to achieve “zero emissions from gas use” by 2045, through phasing out new and existing gas connections, gas-to-electric appliance upgrades and an expanded Energy Efficiency Improvement Scheme (EEIS) to increase support for low income priority households. The draft variation is open for public comment until 6 March 2020; visit act.gov.au/draftvariations

YoWIEs take to UNSW ‘YoWIEs’ once again descended on UNSW Canberra, for the annual Young Women in Engineering (YoWIE) event held on 13-15 January. Created to “disrupt the imbalance in the gender make up” of engineering in Australia, the three-day event sees high school girls from across the country come together to complete activities such as designing satellites, building and testing rockets, disassembling a lawn mower and programming a robot. “Engineering is a unique profession mixing

creativity, abstract thinking and technical skills to solve unknown problems,” said event organiser and aerospace engineer Dr Bianca Capra. “It is fundamental to our lives, yet sadly remains non-representative of our society. The innovative future that is our promise to further generations will only be achieved with diverse and inclusive teams – and increasing the number of women in engineering is a crucial first step to greater diversity.”

8pm each evening. Passengers should use bus stops located near each light rail stop on Northbourne Avenue and Flemington Road. The main works will take place at two locations on Flemington Road, near Exhibition Park in Mitchell and between Manning Clark Crescent and Kate Crace Street in Gungahlin. For more information, visit transport.act.gov.au or call Access Canberra on 13 22 81.

This means our investment advice is focused on the best outcomes for the client and is not influenced by any potential remuneration that we may otherwise receive through a commission arrangement with a product provider.’ With such a unique approach to providing financial advice, it is little wonder Custodian Financial Group has experienced significant and rapid growth since being established in 2009, resulting in Jason becoming a Director in 2015. ‘Our service is not just about investments; it also covers technical strategies, which focus on creating more tax-effective outcomes for our clients. dollars in tax year on year’ Jason says. Jason also specialises in insurance advice assisting clients with life, TPD, trauma and income protection insurance. ‘Protecting a client through an appropriate risk management plan is an essential element of holistic advice’ Jason reinforces. With rapid growth has come the need to grow the team. ‘We are absolutely committed to maintaining our strong client focus and personalised service, and with growth comes the need to support that growth,’ says David. n a conflicted world where the large majority of financial planning organisations recommend financial products from which they receive a financial benefit (either through direct ownership and/or commissions), comes a refreshing approach to obtaining financial advice. ‘We are independently owned and charge on a fee-for-service basis,’ says David Cox, who along with Jason Rance are the Directors of Custodian Financial Group. ‘This sets us apart from most financial planning organisations as we are free to provide investment advice that is in the best interests of the client, not the product providers.’ The client’s best interest is reinforced with Custodian Financial Group’s approach to fees. Financial institutions and planners have come under intense scrutiny in recent times through the Royal Commission, following a long history where they received commissions from clients’ portfolios for very little, if any, service. news Mental recovery from bushfire trauma Experts warn that children are among the worst affected when it comes to trauma caused by disasters and they do not have to personally witness an event to feel scared, angry, confused or overwhelmed. Nicola Palfrey, director of the Australian National University Australian Child and Adolescent Trauma, Loss and Grief Network, said “for many children and adults, the impacts of exposure to a traumatic event only begin to be evident in the months and years after it happened”. “Many people have the misconception PTSD is the only mental health condition that may develop after exposure to traumatic events like the bushfires. But many people also experience significant issues such as anxiety, depression and difficulties with relationships.” Ms Palfrey led the development of a freely-accessible Community

22

Trauma Toolkit, which contains a suite of resources to help support adults and children before, during and after bushfires. The toolkit has been tailored for parents and caregivers, general practitioners, health and social services workers, first responders, educators and community leaders. Ms Palfrey said it is a common misconception that shielding children from bad news is best. “Children need honest, simple and age-appropriate information about what happened, focusing on the effort that is being taken to help others,” she said. “It’s good to let children lead the conversation and monitor how they respond.” According to Ms Palfrey, talking to children about the bushfires will give parents an understanding of what their children know. Talking will also help children share their

fears instead of being left to manage feelings of distress on their own. “Children are resilient, they overcome obstacles big and small every day, but is important that we are clear in what we mean by being resilient,” she said. “Being resilient does not mean never being upset, or sad, or angry.” The toolkit includes tip sheets on how to talk to children following a bushfire and age appropriate activities for their mental health. The toolkit also provides resources to support individuals and communities to: prepare children and their families both practically and psychologically for a disaster; interact with children during the event in a way that may enhance their resilience and recovery; interact and support children and their families as they re-establish a sense of safety immediately after an event;

Nicola Palfrey, director of the ANU Australian Child and Adolescent Trauma, Loss and Grief Network: “Being resilient does not mean never being upset, or sad, or angry.”

support children and their families in the ongoing recovery process; understand the importance of selfcare during and after a traumatic event; and identify emotional and behavioural difficulties in children that may indicate more ongoing, specialised support is required. news More Canberra Hospital parking A temporary carpark will be constructed for the Canberra Hospital on the site of the former CIT Woden Campus. The project will see more than 1,100 additional parking spaces for staff, visitors and construction workers during the construction of the SPIRE project. ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said the carpark would primarily be for hospital staff, and would help to alleviate pressure within the hospital precinct during the SPIRE construction. She said the carpark would include security and shuttle bus services. “We have designed this solution to boost Canberra

Hospital parking availability for staff, visitors and construction workers during this busy expansion period for the hospital,” Minister Stephen-Smith said. “Importantly, the former CIT Woden site will continue to be zoned for community use. “The ACT Government will work with the community to consider options for future use of the site beyond the SPIRE build.” Demolition is expected to start early this year to remove CIT buildings, and construction of the carpark is expected to begin in the middle of the year. The carpark is expected to be open for use prior to work starting on the SPIRE project.

Adelaide Avenue upgrade The ACT Government has announced a dedicated continuous lane from the Cotter Road ramp onto Adelaide Avenue, in a bid to reduce congestion on the arterial road and surrounding streets. The Cotter Road on-ramp will continue onto Adelaide Avenue and become the left-hand lane, while the T2/bus lane will be discontinued for a distance, and

will merge with regular traffic in the middle lane, providing three lanes for traffic heading towards the city. The bus lane will be reinstated when the road opens up to four lanes near Hopetoun Circuit. No changes are being made to the southbound lanes. Construction will take place in two stages, and was expected to begin this week.

Top Aussies to be recognised The 2020 Australian of the Year awards will be presented at the National Arboretum Canberra on Saturday 25 January. The four award categories are: Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year, and

Australia’s Local Hero. The ACT is represented by women’s rugby league pioneer Katrina Fanning, leader and disability advocate Sue Salthouse, sustainability advocate Madeline Diamond, and foster carer Julia Rollings.

Bushfire fundraiser A two-day music fundraiser for bushfire-affected regions will be held in Captains Flat on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 January, with funds raised to go towards the NSW RFS and Wildcare Queanbeyan. ‘Raise the Fun Fest’, will see a number of blues and roots acts take to the stage, including Den Hanrahan, Blue Cheese Rats and the Mighty Resonators, as well 24

as a local craft market, silent auctions, raffles, barefoot bowls and children’s entertainment. The live music will take place at the Captains Flat Hotel, while free camping will be available at Winchester Park and Wilkinson’s Oval. sport Hutchison an ace on the course

Sandra Hutchison had a successful year on the golf course in 2019 claiming the NSW, Victorian and Australian International Ladies Open titles in pitch and putt. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.

Success called for local golfer Sandra Hutchison in 2019 as she claimed the NSW, Victorian and Australian International Ladies Open titles in pitch and putt. Sandra, who is 76 years old and a member at Canberra International Pitch & Putt (CIPP), has been playing the sport for 20 years and prior to last year’s achievements had previously won Australian titles in 2004 and 2005 as well as several state titles. “The club has got quite a few good women players and it just all fell into place for me last year,” Sandra said. “I think someone else will come up this year.” It was tough competition for Sandra to claim the trio of titles. At the NSW Ladies Open she came from nine shots adrift in the last round to win the event while the Australian International P&P Open in Canberra was decided by a sudden death playoff. However it was Sandra’s performance in Victoria, at an unfamiliar course at Phillip Island that she was most proud of. Sandra said the course featured fast, curvy greens – “lots of people had trouble” – however

she claimed a convincing win with her result also ranking her third overall including against the men. Adding to her titles, Sandra also set a new ladies course record of 46 (8 under par) off the stick at the CIPP course. When it comes to competition Sandra said she doesn’t have a lot of strategy with “a lot of luck involved” and was pleasantly surprised with her achievements. “I hadn’t been feeling very competitive before that … I decided I would give it go and I didn’t expect anything. I thought I’d just go for the social part and travelling. The pressure wasn’t on; it will be now,” she smiled. In terms of upcoming events Sandra said she will likely play in the ACT titles at the end of February. She said pitch and putt is a great sport for everyone to get involved with and, unlike a traditional game of golf, it is over in about an hour and a half. “It’s a good way to keep fit as well as enjoying the social side of the game.” - Allison Turnbull

Local tennis player Alison Bai (right) won the women’s doubles title at the Apis Canberra International with Jaimee Fourlis. Photo: Ben Southall.

Bai teams up for success Local tennis player Alison Bai recently teamed up with Jaimee Fourlis (Vic) to claim the women’s doubles title at the Apis Canberra International (Bendigo). For Bai and Fourlis it is their second title together after also winning the ACT

Claycourt International #2 in March last year. After losing the first set 7-5, the pair recovered to take the second 4-6. In the match tiebreak they fell behind 8-5 before rattling off five consecutive points to claim the title.

The UC Capitals returned to form during Round 14 of the WNBL claiming a one-point overtime win over the Melbourne Boomers and a 24-point win over the ladder leaders Southside Flyers, 98-74. Keely Froling will be out for a minimum of three weeks after fracturing her nose and cheek during the match against the Boomers. The Capitals took on Perth Lynx at the National Convention Centre on Wednesday 22 January, the result was not known at time of print. They also host the Sydney Uni Flames on Sunday 26 January 5.05pm.

Cavs claim series win The Canberra Cavalry claimed a series win over the Auckland Tuatara in their series played at the Narrabundah Ball Park from 16-19 January. The Cavalry won their matches 3-2, 11-7, and 7-5 with game four rained out preventing them from claiming the series sweep. Canberra will face the Sydney Blue Sox away, from 23-26 January, in the last regular-season round of the season.

Out to lunch A long lunch for a long weekend! WITH FOOD WRITER, LIBBY KIMBER

Dudes pesto presto scallops This is an edited extract from Keto for Life by Mark Sisson, published by Hardie Grant Books, RRP $29.99 and is available in stores nationally.

Serves: 2 Prep: 20 mins Cook: 5 mins 1 bunch fresh basil, leaves picked 1/2 cup pine nuts 1 Tbsp fresh lemon juice 1/3 cup extra- virgin olive oil or avocado oil 2 ounces (56.70 g) firm aged cheese, grated 1/2 onion, peeled 1 pound (453.59 g) sea scallops 1 Tbsp salted butter 34

In a blender, combine the basil leaves, pine nuts, lemon juice, olive oil, cheese and onion and puree to blend. Transfer to a bowl. Rinse the scallops in warm water and pat them dry thoroughly with a paper towel. This helps them sear rather than steam. In a large cast-iron skillet, heat the butter over medium-high heat. Swirl the butter evenly in the pan. Carefully arrange the scallops in the skillet so one of their flat surfaces is directly touching the pan. Sear for 1 1/2 minutes. Carefully flip the scallops and cook the other side for 1 1/2 more minutes. They should have a golden crust and be translucent in the centre. Drain the scallops in a sieve, then transfer them to the pesto bowl. Toss to coat the scallops well, then serve.

Heat the olive oil over a high heat in a medium sized pan and once hot, add the chicken and cook until browned all over. Once cooked, remove the chicken from pan and set aside. In a large mixing bowl, bring together the spring onions, coriander, mango, lime juice, macadamia nuts, pea shoots (or watercress), lettuce and finally the cooked chicken. Toss to combine and serve immediately.

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Line the base of a 26cm springform tin with baking paper and lightly butter the side of the tin. Coarsely crush the biscuits. Transfer to a food processor with the walnuts and chop finely. Add the biscuits, nuts, butter and salt to a bowl and mix well. Press the mixture firmly into the tin. Whisk the cream cheese. Stir in the maple syrup. Add the eggs, one at a time, and whisk to combine. Pour the mixture into the base and level the top.

Bake the cheesecake for 45–50 minutes. Remove from the oven, slide a knife around the side to loosen and leave to cool in the tin. Refrigerate the cooled cheesecake for 4 hours. Wash, trim and quarter the strawberries. Gently toss with the lemon juice and icing sugar in a bowl and set aside to marinate briefly. Serve the cake with the strawberries and maple syrup.

The exhibition features an immersive 7-foot tall display allowing visitors to hear the first-hand experiences of 12 high profile Australian journalists discussing the pressures they face in their line of work.

Head of exhibitions, content and learning at MoAD, Michael Evans says the new exhibition, Truth, Power and a Free Press chronicles technology’s transformative influence on Australia’s media. Photos: Kerrie Brewer.

MoAD exhibition fights for a bright democratic future Having a free press and a healthy democracy come hand in hand. The two ideals are heavily intertwined and co-dependent. Although coined by former Australian Democrats leader Don Chipp, the Australian adage of ‘keeping the bastards honest’ springs to mind when thinking about the ideals of journalism. The influence of technology on media and, in turn, democracy throughout modern history has been transformative, completely changing the dissemination of information and the public debate for better and for worse. While information is now literally at our fingertips in Australia in 2020, the need for trusted media sources, and for each of us to play our part as informed consumers of news, given the proliferation of content, is more important than ever.

That’s where MoAD comes in, with their new permanent exhibition Truth, Power and a Free Press. Launched in November 2019, the exhibition stresses the importance of trusted media sources in a modern democracy, while bringing together powerful stories and objects that span the history of media in Australia. MoAD Head of exhibitions, content and learning, Michael Evans, tells Canberra Weekly the exhibition is part of a conversation about media and the broader issues affecting our democracy. “You need to have facts, we need to have information available to everybody,” he says. “If you go back to the 19th Century and even the early 20th Century, a lot of what newspapers would do is report word for word what was said in parliament. “We don’t do that so much now because we

don’t need to, but we still need to agree on facts … A lot of problems come about because there’s less clarity between what is fact and what’s opinion. “Pulling against that is the fact that a free press is about opinion. If we only had one voice saying ‘this is the truth’, that’s big brother. “You want a variety of opinion … which is why concentration of ownership is a risk,” he says. As part of this exhibition, MoAD partnered with SBS to develop an immersive 7-foot tall audio-visual display that allows visitors to hear the first-hand experiences of 12 high profile Australian journalists discussing the pressures they’ve faced in their line of work. “The media in general are aware of the threats and problems that are facing free media in Australia; they were all keen to be involved and very supportive of this,” Evans adds. Truth, Power and a Free Press also lays bare the technological evolution of Australia’s media, with items ranging from a mid-19th Century printing press brought out from the UK for Sir Henry Parkes, to the latest iPhones. The most visceral and immersive way in which media’s technological evolution is showcased is by a rather spectacular time warp. Visitors are able to experience the Old Parliament House ABC studio, which has been restored to appear exactly how it did back in 1988. Featuring 1980s-era tech like video cassettes, cameras, recording devices, a record player, and (gasp) hand-written notes in an office space so retro you can almost smell the wafting cigarette smoke, you’re transported back to an analogue world and reminded of the vital role Old Parliament House played in the dissemination of political information for much of the 20th Century. Truth, Power, and a Free Press is a permanent exhibition on display at MoAD; moadoph.gov.au/truth - Denholm Samaras 37

present time out Car New Breakfast host brings a scientific mind to the airwaves Lish Fejer’s warm, bubbly energy is immediately apparent as she enters the secondary studio at ABC Radio Canberra’s famous

Dickson compound. It’s the Thursday before Fejer’s first shift as ABC Canberra’s newest Breakfast host, which took

place on 20 January. She’s been busy shooting a promotional television commercial with the ABC’s own in-house production crew, rolling eight deep, who are down on assignment from Sydney. “Let me assure you this is not a normal day at the ABC,” she quips. Taking on the breakfast shift comes with a dreaded, notoriously early start. Despite identifying as a morning person, Fejer says rising at 3.30am will take some getting used to. “I am a morning person, just when morning actually starts. 3.30am still feels like night, so it will test me, but I definitely have the energy. “I’ll need to be very routine, it will be a relatively early bed time, a 3.30am alarm. I think the secret is to not even mess about, just get

straight up. Don’t question it.” Having called Canberra home for 30 years now, Fejer first came here from a farm in the Snowy Mountains to do a science degree at the ANU. Upon graduation she left town for a few years, but returned to participate in a Questacon graduate program called Questacon Science Circus. “They get 15 enthusiastic science graduates each year, train them up, and then send them out around the country for a year.” She has worked in the field of science communication as a presenter, speaker, writer and exhibition developer ever since. “I’m intensely curious, that’s why I love science, and it’s why I love local radio, because I’m just really interested in what’s

(from page 38) going on in our world, and also in people’s lives, and our community,” she says. Fejer joined the ABC Radio Canberra team in 2010. Having done the Sunday Brunch shift on ABC Radio Canberra for the past six years, she brings experience and lots of pre-existing connections to the role. Fejer’s excited by the prospect of her new gig allowing her to be part of the city’s beating heart. “In the morning you feel like you’re in on something before the word’s got out … I’m looking forward to hearing people’s stories, because we connect a lot more with people at breakfast time.” Fejer’s keen to tell the “hyperlocal” stories, “the little things that are happening in the small, proud, pockets of Canberra”. “Canberra is such a wonderful community place. There’s so much going on here that we don’t

know about, so we really rely on those listeners to tell us what’s important to them,” she says. The biggest issues Fejer sees Canberra facing moving forward is how we as a city continue to develop while maintaining our ‘bush capital’ essence. “I come to how our city grows and how we can keep that charisma and that culture, but also develop as a town,” she says. “To keep up, grow our economy, grow our culture, and grow our community and still keep that very essence that is Canberra. “We’ve just gone through six weeks of really intense smoke, and the anxiety, I think that just makes us love our town even more for the clean air, crisp blue skies, and cold winter days; and I think that’s also what we’ve got to maintain.” Catch ABC Radio Canberra’s Breakfast with Lish Fejer every morning from 6-9am on 666 AM; abc.net.au/radio/canberra - Denholm Samaras

The Pleasure Trap Learn the root cause of weight gain and other self-destructive habits

time out Book talk Jeff Popple reviews two books about gambling and the ‘Shark Arm Murder’ for Australia Day. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Shark Arm by Phillip Roope and Kevin Meagher Allen & Unwin, $32.99

The ‘Shark Arm Murder’ is the quintessential Australian true crime story. In 1935, a recently trapped tiger shark stunned watchers at a Sydney aquarium by vomiting up a human arm tattooed with a blue boxing man. The tattoo identified the victim as being Jim Smith, an ex-boxer and petty police informer. His murder shone a light on some very unsavoury activities in Sydney, but the guilty parties closed ranks and no one was convicted of Smith’s killing. Now, Roope and Meagher take a new look at the crime and uncover a fascinating story of high-class smuggling, cover-ups and more murder. Recommended.

Please Gamble Irresponsibly by Titus O’Reily Michael Joseph, $34.99

A fascinating and insightful lecture that will benefit people struggling with weight gain and the inability to lose weight or keep it off. An inspiring lecture followed by Q&A. Dr Doug Lisle Ph.D.

The Australian fondness for gambling is arguably one of the more worrying aspects of our culture. In Please Gamble Irresponsibly, popular sports comedian and commentator Titus O’Reily takes an irreverent look at the history of Australian sports gambling and how we have achieved the accolade of being the ‘biggest gambling nation in the world’. It is full of amusing stories and interesting historical snippets, as well as some useful tips: ‘gambling is an investment strategy on par with investing in your local pub by buying lots of drinks there’. It is a highly entertaining read, but one that casts a sad light on our national gambling obsession.

Now showing Bombshell (M) In the offices of Fox News, political commentator Megyn Kelly (Charlize Theron) gives us the professional and political lay-of-the-land. After the sexist and aggressive public fallout of her interactions with Donald Trump while moderating the 2016 Republican debate, we flash over to seasoned commentator Gretchen Carlson (Nicole Kidman) who is inexplicably fired from her program. Enter the new, young and beautiful Kayla Pospisil (Margot Robbie) who is quick to catch the eye of Fox News founder Roger Ailes (John Lithgow), who offers to help her career. Announced shortly after Ailes’s death, the movie looks into the lead women who brought Ailes down. Kelly is our guide into the world of Fox News and that of the recent past: a

world that did not believe a man like Donald Trump could ever be President of the United States. Carlson embodies the endgame of one who resists Ailes’s ‘charms’, whereas Pospisil represents the beginnings of a successful career in a transactional relationship with the odious Ailes. Ailes’s leadership through fear and paranoia creates a toxic workplace, with staff (played by an ensemble cast) untrusting of each other whilst being extremely competitive for the sake of their own careers: pawns of Ailes’s machinations. Verdict: While reaching to The Big Short and Vice, the movie fails to drive a clear, cohesive and dramatic point. Apparently, Ailes’s behaviour was much worse than what’s depicted here. Hopefully TV’s The Loudest Voice doesn’t pull its punches. 2.5 stars. - Luke McWilliams

The beauty industry is rapidly changing, with new technology and ever-evolving treatments; it can be hard to keep up. One major trend we’re clearly seeing though, is the importance of skin health. “I think people are more informed, now than ever before, about what happens to their skin if they don’t look after it,” says Australian Capital Training Institute (ACTI) CEO, Borka Buseka, “and now as people become more aware and they understand the ageing process and the impact of external factors, they really are mindful of how to look after their skin”. Borka, along with ACTI director and educator Elise Birchall, provide accredited courses in beauty and leadership and management, as well as non-accredited short courses for those already in the beauty industry. They say they have seen the beauty industry change over time, with people now looking for treatments that aren’t just ‘skin deep’, and based in health science. “We don’t do cosmetic injections here [at ACTI], but I think cosmetic injections are definitely becoming more normalised. There’s not that much stigma associated with it,” Borka says. Both Elise and Borka say with the rapid change in the beauty industry, it can be hard for the accredited curriculums to keep up with consumer demand, so they employ industry specialists to come in and train students in specific treatments that might be ‘trending’. “Because the curriculum restricts what we can teach, the curriculum’s not going to change in the next six months to allow brow laminating and brow tattooing and all those things to come in,” says Elise, who is

also a dermal therapist. “So we have relationships with people who are specialists in eyelash extensions, cosmetic tattooing, nutrition, nail enhancements, tanning. “I think there’s a big trend with the younger generation particularly, that skin health is important and looking after all aspects of your body – your mental health, your physical health, your skin health, and looking after that from the start before problems happen.” Borka says younger clientele are “more educated” on skincare and skin conditions when they come in, while more mature clients are looking for hydration and anti-wrinkle treatments. Elise says for anyone seeking products to manage acne conditions, look for Vitamin B3 (aka Niacinamide), for its antiinflammatory and strengthening benefits, or salicylic acid and other anti-inflammatory products. For ageing concerns, she says products will depend on the condition of the skin; however “retinol or other forms of Vitamin A are very popular”. “These ingredients help to normalise skin cell function and stimulate collagen production – great for mature skin. “Peptides are a bit of a trend in the beauty industry at the moment too, great for producing collagen and repairing damaged skin cells. “With any skin condition, it’s always super important to have a consultation with a professional so that you are prescribed the appropriate skincare and so more damage isn’t created. For all skin concerns, seeking the advice of a qualified skin therapist is also important.” - Libby Kimber

Help for Common Ground

Summerfield residents band together

The ACT Government is calling on businesses to help deliver the second Common Ground project, releasing a ‘Market Sounding Paper’ to gauge interest in the early construction and social and community phases of the project. “The Canberra community has always shown its willingness to give to the greater good and a key to the success of Common Ground Gungahlin was the positive community response and I hope that will be repeated in Dickson,” said Housing Minister Yvette Berry. “This could involve partnering with commercial tradespeople or suppliers, groups or individuals to contribute anything from construction resources and materials to essential household goods and services.”

Residents of Braidwood’s over 55s development Summerfield have banded together to help those affected by the ongoing bushfire crisis. Tim Wright, Summerfield Constructions’ owner and director, says the Summerfield residents “opened up the club house and other accommodation very early on to those who needed help as well as individual residents having those affected with the fires stay with them”. “Summerfield residents have been contributing in cooking and other activities for the fire fighters and other support groups,” he said. “The fires have seen communities all over this country band together to help where they can with the fires. While all segments of our

Common Ground board member Di Kargas Bray AM said “experience shows the Common Ground approach works by helping previously homeless people not only with housing but also connections with the community”. “The Common Ground model based on partnership between the government, community and private sectors - makes it particularly suitable for philanthropy,” she said. Common Ground Dickson will comprise 40 social and affordable homes, with a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, to support people experiencing chronic homelessness into permanent housing. Construction for the project will be tendered both locally and nationally, with completion anticipated by the end of 2021, subject to DA approval.

WorkSafe executes search warrant WorkSafe ACT has executed a search warrant in relation to the death of a 47-year-old worker at a construction site in Denman Prospect on Saturday 11 January. WorkSafe ACT executed a search warrant, supported by the Australian Federal Police and Border Force, to a company director in Denman Prospect on 15 January, to assist their investigations. ACT Work Safety Commissioner

52

Greg Jones said he would “use all powers available” to “fully and thoroughly” investigate the incident. “All ACT workplaces, especially in construction including the residential sector, are on notice that WorkSafe ACT will have a strong regulatory focus on businesses meeting their work health and safety responsibilities and we will not tolerate non-compliance with legislative requirements.”

communities are impacted, the impact on the elderly can be great, from those who may have lost their homes to those who suffer badly from the smoke and air quality, and those who do their best to shelter friends and family and provide support in every way.”

The residents of Summerfield in Braidwood have banded together to help those affected by the bushfires.

Facelifts planned for icons Changes to legislation to help improve, restore and revitalise the appearance of the iconic Sydney and Melbourne Buildings in Civic have been released for public consultation. The proposed changes to the City Renewal Authority and Suburban Land Agency Act 2017 will allow the City Renewal Authority (CRA) to work with building owners to create a revitalisation plan, which will set out what improvements building

owners need to make to their external facing areas and in what timeframe. The draft legislation is based on consultation with stakeholders in 2019 and allows the ACT Government to step in and complete works, at an owner’s expense, if they are not completed within the agreed timeframe. The draft legislation is available for public comment until 9 February online at yoursay.act.gov.au

An elegant estate Wamboin NSW 1311 Norton Road This charming estate in Wamboin is set on approximately 10 acres of grazing land, nestled among beautifully landscaped gardens. “Like a holiday resort dropped into the middle of the countryside, this beautiful sanctuary offers the best of both worlds; resort-style living at its very best in a tranquil and calm country environment,” says Maria Selleck Properties director and real estate agent, Maria Selleck. “Although only 30 minutes away from Canberra CBD (20 minutes from Watson), this beautiful property situated on 10 acres with plush rolling hills as some of the scenic backdrops, is ideally suited for anyone who enjoys entertaining, and/or busy executives who would like to get away from the hustle and the bustle of the city environment into the peace and quiet of the countryside.” Selleck says the home’s unique features include the dome-like ceiling, the award-winning solar and gas heated indoor swimming pool and spa, the pavilion-sized games room and the well-equipped bar, among others. “This beautiful countryside

‘mansion’ complements family living whilst showcasing a host of additional features. “With the additional detached cottage complete with a living room, bedroom, and kitchen family room and several other buildings providing exceptional space, both inside and out, this well designed property ensures the whole family and all of their friends will be well catered for all year round.” The home has been “meticulously loved and maintained”, and built to the highest standard, with five bedrooms, including a large master suite with ensuite and walk-in robe. The open-plan family room boasts a slowcombustion fireplace, while the large kitchen features a five-burner gas cooktop, Miele appliances and a Blackwood timber kitchen bench. Set amongst a backdrop of rolling hills, the outdoor surrounds boast an automatic watering system and pasture across four paddocks. Selleck says Wamboin is an ideal location for those commuting to Canberra and elsewhere: “the rural district of Wamboin is less than 30 minutes’ drive from the Canberra CBD, 30 minutes from the Woden Town Centre and about 10 minutes’ drive from the City of Queanbeyan, making it ideal for commuting between Canberra, Goulburn or the South Coast”.

property of the week

A room with a view Fraser 1 Eddison Place This beautifully-crafted dualoccupancy residence in the Belconnen suburb of Fraser is perfectly positioned high on the block, taking in views of the rolling hills and beyond. On the site of an ex-Mr Fluffy block, 1 Eddison Place has been architecturally-designed, and is a brand new home ready for its new owners. McGrath Dickson sales agent Justin Ingram says the home’s ideal buyers may be an older couple looking to downsize: “maybe the kids have left home but the parents aren’t proper downsizers yet, so they can still manage stairs”. “If they have kids, they are likely to be teenagers, as there isn’t an enormous block so the kids may not use a big yard anyway,” Ingram says. The new owners will enjoy a gourmet kitchen, perfect for the home chef, with induction cooktop, walk-in pantry, plumbed fridge space and custom joinery. Ingram says the home is positioned “high on the hill, and designed to capture stunning views”, which can be seen from the open plan living, kitchen and

dining space. The home has four good-sized bedrooms, including an executive master bedroom, which boasts a spacious room, walk-in robe and a large ensuite with herringbone tiling. The remaining three bedrooms all include built-in robes. Other features inside the home include 2.7m high ceilings, custommade double glazed windows and doors, timber flooring, ducted reverse-cycle heating and cooling and an over 70sqm garage on the lower floor with plenty of storage. Outside, enjoy the fully landscaped gardens, as well as a large entertaining deck, perfectly positioned for summer nights spent entertaining and taking advantage of the stunning vista.

The Grey

Friday, 7MATE, 9.45pm, MA15+ (2011)

Liam Neeson (pictured) offers up another action performance here in a tale that pits him and his co-stars against vicious forces of nature. On their way home from a job drilling oil deep in the frozen wilderness of Alaska, John Ottway (Neeson) and his pals find themselves stranded after their plane crashes right into the realm of a vicious wolf pack.

Friday

pick of the week The Sapphires Sunday, SBS, 8.30pm, (2012)

With an all-star cast including Deborah Mailman (pictured), Chris O’Dowd and songstress Jessica Mauboy, this uplifting tale set in the swingin’ ’60s is based on the true story of four Aboriginal women in a singing group who auditioned to entertain US troops in Vietnam. Featuring charming performances, it’s an inspirational story about coming up against the odds.

January 24

Elle Saturday, SBS, 10.20pm, (2016) Paul Verhoven’s black comedy about one woman’s response to being raped will not be for everyone. Based on Oh …, the award-winning novel by Philippe Djian, it stars the brilliant Isabelle Huppert (pictured) as Michèle, a high-flying video game company CEO. Surprisingly quick in the unmasking of her assailant, the film is more concerned with investigating Michèle’s conflicting impulses. Perplexing, unexpected, enthralling and even funny in turn.

celebrity birthday JESSICA MARAIS

29 January 1985 The next 12 months show up all the complex emotions in Jessica’s personal relationships. It may not be comfortable to see clearly where all the weaknesses lie, but ignoring problems won’t make them go away. People whom she loves dearly may be using her as a support even when they could manage reasonably well without her. If that’s case, then it’s time to call a halt and make them stand on their own. In her working life, it could be helpful to develop some stress control techniques.

in the stars ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

Money wise and in dealings with authority you’re in luck. You’re forceful and assertive and won’t take less than perfect. Be sure you don’t take this wilfulness too far or you could wind up dishing out more than anyone deserves! At the very least, you’ll get what you want.

Jupiter visits your relationship house. A relationship/friendship could be problematic as a loved one issues ultimatums. More compromise is needed if you want to avoid tears before bedtime. Many Cancers will take up a sport, hobby or a new fitness program. Creative prospects are also favoured.

It’s full steam ahead when it comes to a personal or family issue. It’s time to ask some hard questions and take a firm stand. Don’t let a loved one walk all over you and avoid a tendency to procrastinate! You won’t get far if you just sit on the fence.

There is an upsurge in optimism which should put a much-needed sparkle back in your personality. You will find that your popularity increases this month and you can’t fail but to charm all around you. Who could resist your smouldering good looks and magnetic personality?

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY Think before you act if you want to avoid trouble this week. Thankfully with Jupiter in your romance zone, it will help you to view a troubled relationship from a philosophical perspective. If you are single, you could fall for someone from overseas.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE With Mars in Libra, the bond between yourself and loved ones will be strengthening. If you’re fancy free, get out with friends who could make interesting introductions. Intense communication and relationship challenges lie ahead. You’ve got plenty to say; just be certain to listen to others.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG You need to pace yourself and do your best to avoid run-ins with authority figures. If you are the person in charge, then resist the urge to be bossy and overbearing with others. Being overly demanding will get you nowhere fast. Communicate clearly at work to minimise confusion.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT Venus is in a beautiful aspect with Jupiter and so it won’t pay you to be too independent, mainly due to the fact that others are lucky for you. They can point you in the right direction, so that you’re in the right place at the right time.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV Smart Scorpios will seize the moment, day and year, as you grab opportunities when they come along. Cash opportunities could help you to reorganise your life more constructively. Your values could go through a fundamental shift. Think carefully about your responsibilities as well as what you want and need.

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC Saturn and Venus encourage you to utilise your leadership skills in disciplined and diplomatic ways that result in cooperation from others. You’ll be making strides at work, so decide what you want and then go for it. Your courage and enthusiasm will set the pace and impress other people.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB A romantic date will give your heart a lift. Singles, a simmering attraction could gather exciting momentum. Fun places and encounters will keep you smiling; going further afield or catching up with a friend from afar will be stimulating. A personal or professional project will progress in leaps and bounds.

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR You seem to be making some quite important long-term decisions and the indications are that this is the right thing to do. Some of these decisions revolve around relationships and partnerships and they could lead you either into or out of some kind of major commitment.

My favourite things RESCUE ANIMALS “It’s really something Kate (my partner) got me into.” Katrina says they have had “all sorts of weird and wonderful things” including chickens, rabbits, ducks, dogs and guinea pigs to name a few. “They all come with a little story”.

EXPLORING CANBERRA Photo Kerrie Brewer

“That’s something that’s a team negotiation on a Saturday morning.” Katrina says they often revisit locations such as the War Memorial, Questacon and National Museum but she also encourages her boys to “think up or look up new things. That becomes our adventure on the weekend”.

Katrina Fanning

ROAST DINNER “It is the one meal we will sit down and talk about the week or how last week went.” Katrina says she enjoys the smell of it cooking throughout the house in the colder months, and it’s also a dish her boys like. “When the boys leave, they can come back for it.”

2020 ACT Australian of the Year

Women’s rugby league pioneer, Katrina Fanning, is the 2020 ACT Australian of the Year. Originally from Junee, NSW, Katrina is the Director of Coolamon Advisors, an Indigenous majority-owned and managed consultancy, as well as being involved in numerous roles within the community. Some of her roles include chairperson of the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body as well as board member of the Fred Hollows Foundation, Australian Rugby League Indigenous Council, Women’s Legal Centre and the Canberra Raiders. Katrina was also recently named as part of the National Co-Design Group tasked with developing options and models for a national Indigenous voice. “If I had to peel it right back, it’s working on things that give people opportunity and choice in their lives,” Katrina says. “As a kid, I had teachers and coaches that did something a little extra and gave me a different pathway in life.” - Allison Turnbull 106

KARAOKE

RUGBY LEAGUE

“I love karaoke which is weird because I’m not good at it. I lived in New Zealand for a year and gave up on karaoke while I was there because they could all sing. I was very amateur but I just think it’s a bit of fun and poking fun of yourself.”

“The last year in particular, just seeing how all of Canberra got behind a team, I love that sense of community that comes with football. Growing up in a rugby league town, regardless of how the rest of the week went, rugby league brought us together.”

TREAT YOURSELF CANBERRA, YOU DESERVE IT! Like every other tourism operator in the area, we have had lower bookings for January due to the smoke we had in Canberra!! For a VERY limited time, ring 02 6287 8444 anytime between 7am and 7pm and if we have a vacancy and you book in the next 4 nights from when you ring, we will upgrade you from a uShaka Room to a Giraffe Treehouse or from a Treehouse to a Jungle Bungalow. Luxury themed accommodation with artefacts, 5 course gourmet dinner with Moet Champagne and fine wines, breakfast, two great tours, incredible visitors at your window….. Please note that while the animals generally join guests as shown, no guarantees can be given as they are free to roam their entire area at all times.
