thursday 16 april 2020

This week... From the editor Greetings dear readers, how did you go over the isolation Easter long weekend 2020? For 10 of the previous 11 Easters, I had frequented the National Folk Festival at EPIC, and usually enjoyed celebrations with the extended family, while this year’s plans to visit friends at Pambula were shelved a few weeks back. So, while this was an Easter break like no other, isolation has its advantages. We had a couple of cosy dinners in, watching the telly, and perambulated around the neighbourhood in glorious autumn sunshine. Cooked some new recipes, chatted on the phone with family who live interstate, devoured some books and magazines, and pottered in the garden, which presented an ideal opportunity to meet the new neighbours, who were also working in their front garden – social distancing all the while. The occasional relaxing cuppa on the back deck turned into spontaneous bird watching episodes as king parrots, crimson and Eastern rosellas, gang-gangs, galahs and sulphur-crested cockatoos visited the yard. As a friend shared on her Facebook page: “Just think about it. How privileged we are that during a global pandemic we can just stay at home comfortably reading, working, watching TV, listening to music and with a fridge stocked with food. Do remind yourself to be grateful today.” I am grateful for all that and more, especially for all those doing their best to contain the pandemic. Take care,

news Canberra Easter crowds solicit stern warning

Canberrans are being urged to heed social distancing guidelines while exercising outside, especially around popular spots like Lake Burley Griffin.

While Canberrans recently have done a lot toward curbing the rate of spread of COVID-19, many people inadvertently flouted the public gathering and social distancing restrictions over the Easter long weekend. ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said that ACT Policing overall reported a very positive response from the Canberra community, with only a couple of exceptions. Police were “mobile and active” on all major roads leading into NSW and were stopping drivers to speak with them about the purpose of their travel.

“I’m advised nearly everyone was compliant,” Mr Barr said. “ACT Policing were required to turn a few cars around, including someone who thought that towing a caravan for a holiday into NSW would be a good idea at this time. “Even though it’s been disappointing that a very small number of people have not been heeding the warnings, we do want to say thank you to all of those Canberrans who have done the right thing,” he said. Across the four days, police spoke with close to 400 drivers about the

purpose of their travel, and 46 drivers chose to turn around on highways when they understood their travel wasn’t essential. In total, police issued over 100 traffic infringements for offences including speeding, unregistered vehicles, and use of a mobile phone, while one driver was summonsed for driving while disqualified. Locally, Mr Barr mentioned police reported significant crowding at two Canberra landmarks: Lake Burley Griffin’s bridge-to-bridge walk, and a well-known flat pack furniture shop near Canberra Airport. “Police were patrolling Lake Burley Griffin yesterday (12 April) and did see a lot of people out exercising, and that’s a great thing … we do just need to remember to avoid crowds when we exercise. “There’s nothing wrong with doing that 5km circuit, but when you are doing it you defeat the whole purpose of physical distancing if you’re all crammed together,” he said. Mr Barr ruled out stationing ACT Policing on the bridges while speaking to ABC Radio Canberra’s

Breakfast on 14 April. “I’d despair a little about how we’re going to go with this for the next few years if we can’t manage a little distance between one another going over a bridge,” he said. In respect to retail shopping, Mr Barr said while there are things people do need to do over the long weekend, it’s important to still be mindful of crowding. “Just think about how you do that … All the fantastic work that people have been doing day in day out for weeks can all be undone by one large crowd gathering.” Police responded to several incidents over the long weekend for possible breaches of COVID-19 health directions. These included gatherings at residences and public parks, businesses thought to still be operating, and a group of three men working on a car in front of a house in Forde. In all instances, the groups were cooperative with police, and dispersed without incident where required, with no fines issued.

Red Cross calls for blood donors Australians who are healthy and well are being encouraged to roll up their sleeves and donate blood to assist patients across the country. Australian Red Cross Lifeblood Chief Executive Shelly Park said in mid-March that they saw a strong response from donors at the start of the year as a way to help with the nation’s bushfire response however “those generous donors have to wait 12 weeks before they are able to donate again”. “This means there are now fewer people able to donate over the coming weeks. Last minute cancellations are also putting a dent in blood stocks at a time when donors are in urgent need. As we all know, there is no substitute for blood. It is a critical resource, and right now, we need more people 6

booking appointments to donate.” Ms Park said the organisation was also preparing for the annual cold and flu season, and said the emergence of the novel coronavirus could put the nation’s blood supply under pressure should existing donors become unavailable and regular donations become disrupted. Lifeblood NSW/ACT Media and Communications Manager Nicky Breen acknowledged there has been a drop in donations in recent weeks. “We know people are likely to be changing their regular schedules right now due to public health advice and this may impact their ability to attend a donor centre,” Ms Breen said. “But it’s important to remember that blood and plasma donation remains absolutely vital and is excluded from restrictions to

people’s movement.” Ms Breen said the exception “is our generous donors aged 70 and over”. “We strongly encourage people who have been advised by government to stay at home and self-isolate for their own protection to follow this advice. This applies to people aged 70 and over, or other specified age groups with chronic medical conditions.” There are currently 500,000 blood donors in Australia but millions more who may be eligible to donate. Blood and blood products are used to treat patients with a number of conditions in Australia including those suffering from cancer, patients undergoing surgery, people suffering from anaemia and other blood disorders as well as trauma victims and mums suffering complications in

Walk this May for RSPCA Supporters of the Million Paws Walk still have the opportunity to grab a leash and fundraise for a purpose with this year’s event going virtual in response to government restrictions on public gatherings during the COVID-19 pandemic. The event has evolved into Million Paws Walk: Walk This May, which encourages participants to simply

walk 30 minutes a day this May, in their backyards or neighbourhoods, with their furry friend. Participants can make a donation, or fundraise in the lead up to and during May. Money raised from online fundraising and merchandise sales will be used to support the RSPCA’s work within the community.

RSPCA ACT CEO Michelle Robertson said they don’t know what to expect from this year’s event but acknowledged its importance in terms of funds for the shelter. “Fundraising is so important for us,” she said. “If you look at our revenue, 60-70% comes from donations and fundraising. We genuinely rely on the generosity of the community.” The restructure of the event means the organisation will miss out on funds that typically come from ticket sales. This year, they had already sold 1,391 tickets. Those who have pre-purchased tickets are being given an opportunity to have their ticket cost transferred to a donation; however, people can also ask for a refund. Ms Robertson encouraged the community to continue to be involved in this year’s event despite the changes as it provides an opportunity to feel good and do good.

“People will see the benefits,” she said. “Even if it’s just going out and going for a walk you feel better, you clear your head, and you’re getting exercise. If you do that every day of the month, it will provide a whole lot of good. It’s not just about the issue [animal cruelty].” And to encourage a community feel, participants are encouraged to share photos of their dogs and walks on social media using the hashtag #MillionPawsWalk and #MPWDOGSQUAD. The Million Paws Walk: Walk This May is free to participate. To sign up, purchase merchandise and start fundraising, visit millionpawswalk.com.au The RSPCA ACT shelter is still open, however they have implemented a booking system for adoption appointments. Life on the COVID-19 front line for two Canberra doctors When Dr Sharmila Sambandam (below) and Dr Eu Jern Tan (right) joined Ochre Health’s Garran Medical Centre 10 months ago, they were looking forward to a focus on their special interests: weight management for Dr Sambandam and skin cancer for Dr Tan. Then COVID-19 hit! “Things have been changing so rapidly to ensure the safety of our patients,” Dr Sambandam says. “Initially, we rescheduled respiratory patents to the end of the day so that they could still be reviewed. Once telehealth consultations were initiated, we were able to see patients in the safety of their homes via phone or video, and refer them for testing should they be unwell and meet the relevant criteria.” “It works very well, although some patients still need face-toface consultations. However, as Emergency Departments are not places people should go for minor ailments at the moment, the service a GP provides is more important than ever.” Her colleague Dr Tan agrees: “Having research experience in Influenza, I would highly recommend everyone gets an influenza vaccination early this year, as per the government’s advice. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the optimisation of everyone’s health through various means including vaccinations is crucial in reducing poorer outcomes.

We are currently running dedicated flu clinics which are very safe. Our triage staff are dressed in full PPE (personal protective equipment). We also stagger appointments to make sure we never have too many patients in the same area at any one time.” “Anybody could have COVID-19,” says Dr Sambandam. “I am aware of the personal risk of bringing something home, because we are the frontline. At the same time, I have a duty and I love my job. When I come home, my daughter comes running to me – just these days she has to wait until I’ve had a shower!” “At home, we use an ethanol solution to thoroughly wipe down any plastic bags or packages we bring in from outside,” says Dr Tan. “You could use any commercialgrade disinfectant product instead. We have a designated area for this, where we put our groceries into clean containers before transferring them inside. Keeping safe is all about hygiene, especially through regular handwashing with soap or hand sanitizer.” “We doctors are part of a team of many health professionals out there fighting for our community,” says Dr Sambandam. “We encourage everybody to adhere to social distancing measures and the medical advice provided to help us stop the spread of the virus, protect your loved ones, and save lives. It is a team effort for all Australians!” Dr Tan and Dr Sambandam practice from Ochre Health’s Garran Medical Centre, 2 Garran Place, (02) 6281 0033

Allira was diagnosed with melanoma at 22 and, almost seven years later, with Stage 4 metastatic melanoma. She went through adjuvant immune-therapy treatment and welcomed the announcement it will be made accessible to everyone through the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. Image supplied.

Affordable access to melanoma treatment Eligible patients will now have affordable access to melanoma treatment options on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). The Federal Government recently announced the current PBS listing of Opdivo (nivolumab) will be expanded to include adjuvant treatment of completely resected stage IIIB, IIIC, IIID and stage IV malignant melanoma. Immuno-oncology treatments, like Opdivo, use the body’s natural defences – the immune system – to fight cancer. Associate Professor Matteo Carlino, medical oncologist and lead investigator at the Melanoma Institute Australia, welcomed this PBS listing as an important new option for healthcare practitioners. “Traditionally, once patients finished their primary treatment (usually surgery), the approach was to watch and wait, hoping the cancer did not return. Now, adjuvant treatment can help reduce the risk of cancer returning for some patients with a higher risk of melanoma coming back.” Local resident Allira was diagnosed with melanoma at 22. “It was a normal mole on my right arm but in hindsight it showed all the signs,” she said, including being itchy, changing colour and bleeding. “Dad saw it on my arm and said I should get it checked. I knew what

was going on wasn’t great but I was in denial.” Allira underwent surgery, was given the all clear and, as advised, remained vigilant and continued to have regular scans. Almost seven years later she was diagnosed with Stage 4 metastatic melanoma after tests found a lump on her arm and tumour in her lung, both of which were surgically removed. At the time Allira started adjuvant immune-therapy treatment, she said it cost about $3,000 per fortnight. “That was very stressful and I thought we would be paying that all year.” Thankfully, she said, there was a bridging program which came into effect about three months into her treatment program and “from that point the drug company covered the cost of it”. It is expected the PBS listing will provide welcome financial relief for those accessing the treatment. It is estimated more than 1,500 patients might otherwise pay more than $100,000 per course of treatment without the PBS subsidy. The Federal Government is also expanding the listing of Opdivo and Yervoy (nivolumab and ipilimumab) to allow use as a first-line therapy in the treatment of BRAF V600 mutant positive Stage III or Stage IV unresectable or metastatic melanoma. - Allison Turnbull

A new short film competition is offering some isolation inspiration, encouraging young filmmakers to express their ideas for a sustainable future in Canberra. SEE-Change received funding from the ACT Government’s Community Zero Emissions Grants Program to run the short film competition and festival, Future Film, which is designed for young people and has the theme of Reimagining Canberra’s Future. SEE-Change executive officer Maddie Diamond said the competition is about providing a “different kind of platform for people to engage with sustainability and climate change”. Participants are encouraged to create awareness of sustainable solutions and technology in use now, or explore their own unique solutions for the future, through a 2-7 minute film in any form – documentary, animation, comedy, etc.

“We have provided ideas about what people might want to explore but I really hope that people take it into their own hands and make it their own.” Ms Diamond said the films don’t have to be award-winning quality, rather they want to see people put in the research to a sustainable solution and communicate that effectively. “A lot of people will have to make this in their backyard with the current [COVID-19] situation so they will have to be more creative with less resources,” she said. “We don’t want people to feel that because their original idea can’t happen anymore they are not good enough … as long as they are eligible on the guidelines, it will still be considered. Don’t doubt what you can make because of the restrictions.” For those keen to participate but unsure where to start, Ms Diamond said they are also providing a free mentoring program with local filmmakers; however, limited spots are available. “We have about 18 spots people can sign up for and get some mentoring about how to make a film,” she said. Mentoring will be via phone, email or video call. There are five age categories for the Future Film Festival from Kindergarten - Year 3 category through to 18-25 Years category with prizes up for grabs as well as the winners having their films screened at the Canberra Short Film Festival (subject to change). “It might seem like a big age range but all young people are facing the same challenges of what we are going to face with climate change,” Ms Diamond said. Free to enter, entries close on 21 June. For more information visit see-change.org.au/futurefilm - Allison Turnbull

sport At a glance NRL Premiership eyes restart The Australian Rugby League Commission has endorsed a proposal from the Project Apollo committee to resume the Telstra NRL Premiership on 28 May. In addition to resuming the competition in May, Project Apollo also recommended to the Commission that State of Origin be played in a standard three-game format, and the NRL Grand Final be played in Sydney as a standard one-game format. Resumption of the competition remains subject to ongoing advice from government and health experts and continued consultation with all broadcast partners to determine the optimum way to fulfil broadcast obligations.

Community sports postponed further Rugby Australia and its State and Territory member unions have made the collective decision to further postpone Community Rugby across the country until at least 1 June. All rugby activity including matches, training and face-to-face education courses will not be conducted during

this period. The organisations will continue to review this position as further updates from government and health authorities are received. Football Federation Australia has also decided to extend the temporary suspension of grassroots football. The current suspension, which applies to all sanctioned matches and competitions, including National Premier Leagues, FFA Cup, Junior and grassroots football, as well as training and associated football related activities, will remain in place until 31 May, at which point it will be reassessed.

Brumbies W finish third The Super W season was finalised on Friday 3 April with the NSW Waratahs Women declared champions for the third straight season, having finished the regular rounds in first place. Due to the ongoing public health emergency of COVID-19, governing bodies agreed the season could not be completed in the near future and collectively decided to conclude the season with immediate effect. The Brumbies were due to take on the Queensland Reds W for a place in the grand

final, having finished third in the regular season. The finals matches were originally postponed until late May.

Huawei stands by Raiders Huawei Australia has announced they will continue to fulfil their major sponsor obligations to the Canberra Raiders despite the ongoing uncertainty caused by the suspension of the 2020 NRL season. Ongoing financial support provided by Huawei Australia as part of their major sponsorship deal will provide the Canberra Raiders with a vital revenue stream. In response to COVID-19 and suspension of the NRL season, the Canberra Raiders administration closed on Friday 27 March until further notice with administration staff stood down indefinitely. The Brumbies have also announced that they have offered a significant number of staff reduced hours, while a small number of staff will continue working full-time but with significant salary reductions. These measures have been implemented from 1 April through until at least 30 June.

Combine dry ingredients (flour through cinnamon) in a large bowl. Whisk together wet ingredients (buttermilk through vanilla) in a jug.

Serves: 1

Pour wet ingredients into dry and stir until just combined. The mixture will be thick, with a few lumps.

1 cup milk or water

Preheat a large skillet over medium heat. Brush pan with a bit of extra oil and pour in 1/4 cup of batter per pancake; allow room to spread and avoid crowding the pan. Cook 2-3 minutes until small bubbles form on the surface and edges are golden.

1 Tbsp (10g) sliced almonds

Flip pancakes and cook another 2-3 minutes. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil, or keep warm in a low oven. Re-oil pan and repeat with remaining batter. Serve with extra passionfruit pulp, yoghurt and maple syrup.

1/3 cup (35g) rolled oats 1/4 tsp cinnamon 1 cup (150g) diced papaya 1 Tbsp almond butter 2 Tbsp natural yoghurt Add oats, milk and cinnamon to a saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer 3-4 minutes until thickened, then stir through half the diced papaya. Spoon porridge into a serving bowl, top with almonds, almond butter, yoghurt and remaining papaya.

Sonic the Hedgehog (PG)

Gathering Dark by Candice Fox Bantam, $32.99

Blair Harbour was once a respected surgeon in Los Angeles, until she murdered someone. Recently paroled and trying to keep her nose clean, she finds herself dragged into trouble when her former cellmate, Sneak Lawlor, begs her to help save her daughter. Blair must turn to two unlikely allies to survive, underworld figure Ada Maverick and the cop who arrested her, Detective Jessica Sanchez. This is an entertaining stand-alone crime fiction novel from Australian author Candice Fox. Fox crafts an electrifying story around four fantastic female characters, and the result is a clever and extremely enjoyable read.

House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J. Maas Bloomsbury, $29.99

Bryce Quinlan was a half-Fae party girl, living it up in Crescent City, until her best friend was brutally killed by a demon. Two years later, a string of similar murders occur, and Bryce is coerced into investigating them. Teaming up with the dangerous fallen angel, Hunt Athalar, Bryce begins to explore the city’s dark underside. But is she truly prepared for the secrets and hurt she is about to uncover? This is a massive adult fantasy masterpiece from an extremely talented author. Featuring an amazing story, an outstanding new fantasy world and some very complex characters, this book is highly recommended.

Hitler’s Secret by Rory Clements Zaffre, $29.99

1941, Hitler’s Germany is at the height of its power, and Cambridge history professor Tom Wilde wants to help bring it down. Enlisted into a top-secret mission, Wilde is smuggled into Germany to recover a package, one that could have massive consequences for Hitler. Trapped behind enemy lines, Wilde learns the full horror of Hitler’s secret, and now he must survive to protect it. The fourth book in Clements’ Tom Wilde series, Hitler’s Secret is an impressive historical thriller, with a captivating story and an evocative setting. Thrilling and hard to put down, it is well worth checking out.

A young, anthropomorphic hedgehog called Sonic (Ben Schwartz) is sought after by a tribe of echidnas for his supersonic power. To protect him, his owl guardian gives Sonic a bag of interdimensional portal rings to assist him in travelling to other planets. Flashing forward 10 years, Sonic lives reclusively in small-town Green Hills, Montana USA. That is, until he accidentally triggers an EMP that knocks out the city’s power, in turn drawing the attention of the US Government and one zany Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Developed in the early 1990s, Sonic The Hedgehog was Sega’s response to Nintendo’s ubiquitous Super Mario Brothers. The hypercool, fast talking larrikin since spawned a multimedia franchise, with a feature-length movie in development since 1993. Paired with the town sheriff (James

Marsden) to assist him on a crosscountry roadtrip to get his lost rings back, Sonic relies on the usual interdimensional-hopping tropes (Masters of the Universe, Smurfs) in setting the adventure on Earth to keep production costs down. Carrey brings his brand of otherworldly comic-book antics to the proceedings, hamming it up with glee in a variety of ways; from giving hilarious shade to military types to doing a dance sequence in a research montage. Verdict: With the main theme revolving around loneliness and friendship, it’s a shame that the usually uber-cool and selfconfident Sonic comes across as ‘needy’. Hopefully, future outings give Sonic his groove back. 3 stars. - Luke McWilliams | themovieclub. net Sonic The Hedgehog is streaming on Amazon Prime and iTunes.

The Witcher (MA) Monsters, magic and fate, oh my! The Witcher is a medieval fantasy series based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s books which is screening on Netflix. Bloody and violent, the show won’t be to everyone’s tastes but fans of the books or the video games, will find plenty to enjoy, especially in the amazing choreographed fight scenes – episode one being a particular highlight. Henry Cavill (Man of Steel) is perfectly cast as Geralt of Rivia – the titular witcher/monster hunter – conveying most of his performance through grunts and facial expressions. His performance is complemented by those of Anya Chalotra as sorceress Yennefer, Freya Allan as princess Ciri, and Joey Batey as bard Jaskier, who provides most of the lighter moments throughout

the series as well as one catchy tune - Toss a Coin to Your Witcher – an original song from the show. As a fan of both the video games and books prior to watching the series, I was concerned about the adaptation to screen but creator Lauren Schmidt has done a wonderful job bringing The Witcher to life. The only concern for those unfamiliar with the source material is the show can be difficult to get into. It isn’t aided by having multiple timelines in play, leaving it up to the viewer to decipher what’s happening. But don’t write it off too early. The episodes are suitably entertaining, often with a ‘monster of the week’ offering, and when you unravel the nuance of timelines and characters, there’s another level of intrigue. - Allison Turnbull

Earth Day From plastic wrapping to takeaway coffee cups (which are being used more now while keep cups are off limits due to COVID-19 restrictions), the little ways our habits impact the environment can quickly add up. Selecting the right lighting and cooling products for your home can help minimise your impact on the environment. Atlanta 142cm DC fan and light $469, Beacon Lighting.

Challenge yourself

Live lighter

Show the Earth some much-needed love and try to incorporate some simple changes into your lives. No new plastics: Refrain from buying new plastics for a week. Plastics make a huge amount of ocean waste and not all are fully recyclable. If you manage one week, try to extend the challenge for longer periods. Invest in multi-use: Think about products that have dual (or more) use to get more bang for your buck and minimise waste. Recycle: Recycle any product packaging, including cardboard, jars and plastics. And be sure to get the most of the products you already have – beauty brand Biossance suggests cutting tubes of products in half to use up every last drop before purchasing more. Switch off: Be more conscious of your electricity usage. You don’t need all the lights on at once. Reuse: Sterilise and reuse your empty jars as containers rather than purchasing new storage containers.

Minimise your impact on the environment through choosing energy-efficient lighting and cooling products. Here Beacon Lighting shares how to make the right choice for your home. Choose energy efficient LED globes: An 8.5W LED globe uses almost five times less energy than a standard 42W halogen globe and lasts over seven times longer. This helps you save energy and money while reducing the number of globes ending up in landfill. Save energy with DC fans: Direct Current (DC) powered fans are highly energy-efficient, requiring less energy to produce a superior air flow while costing just one cent per hour to run. It is estimated that in summer, using your fan with air conditioning can help to cool the room faster, saving energy and reducing cooling costs by 40%. In winter, running your fan in reverse mode to circulate the warm air that gathers at the ceiling helps warm up the room faster, saving energy and reducing heating costs by 10%. Sensors: Besides enhancing your home’s kerb appeal, exterior lights with motion sensors help you to save energy by automatically turning on only when they detect motion. Plus, they improve your home’s security by deterring potential burglars. Use switch dimmers: Dimmers allow you to control the amount of light to match your tasks – more light when you’re reading or working, less light when you want to relax or create a mood. This helps to reduce your energy usage and running costs.

Sustainable design With more people taking an interest in sustainability, homewares are starting to adapt their products for the environmentally conscious. You can find rugs that are made from recycled plastic water bottles or, in the case of Sheridan, a sheet range featuring Tencel Lyocell fibres with Refibra technology created using upcycled cotton scraps and wood pulp from sustainable forests. Tencel X Refibra sheet set $399.99 queen, Sheridan.

Stylist Tara Wokulski shares her simple and practical tips to bring cosiness and comfort into your home: Start with soft and cosy: We’re talking anything you can snuggle into or bring in for a cuddle. Bring the outdoors in: A small, or large, touch of nature in the home not only looks great, but helps create a sense of peace, relaxation and tranquillity. Looking around at happy houseplants or florals makes you happy too, and helps with balance and harmony. Be sure to house your plants and arrangements in appropriately sized pots, bowls and vases. Don’t leave your walls bare: Art is always important, and can totally make a space. Find an artist with a style you love, and purchase a couple of pieces from a series. You can always add or mix things up later. Update your basics: Hone in on those products you bought on the cheap; these can be functional pieces like a wastepaper bin or toilet brush. Updating and upgrading these items can create an overwhelming difference in your home, and provide small, but significant, moments of joy when used. Fragrance: If you don’t have a signature fragrance in your home, you’re really missing out. The sensation of walking into a lightly scented room is game changing, and completely changes the ambience and feel of a space.

Weekly market wrap

Is now a good time to buy or sell? This, or a variation of this (“what is the market like?”) is often one of the first questions I get asked in social settings when those I am speaking with find out I work in real estate. Initially, this sounds like a straightforward question; the answer is either yes or no. However, it isn’t as straightforward as it initially seems, as the real estate market is comprised of a number of sub-markets. This is especially true in Canberra as our city is planned around multiple town centres, each surrounded by apartments, townhouses and houses which are a mix of established properties, brand new builds and those being sold off-plan. Each sub-market has its own typical vendor, buyer and tenant demographics that need to be considered when determining the state of the market. SQM Research reported in March that Canberra had an 11% increase in the number of properties advertised for sale month on month; however, the number of listings was still down 15.4% year on year. During the last week, there were 30.3% fewer established properties listed for sale on Allhomes. Buyers looking for established properties have far less choice.

For those considering selling, this poses an opportunity to offer their property for sale with significantly less competition. During the last year, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reported there were 1,942 fewer dwellings approved in Canberra than in the previous year. This means people buying offplan in low-rise, medium-density developments won’t see an increase in their available options in the immediate future. There is potential supply within the apartment market in town centres as multiple Development Applications for large projects have been lodged or approved during the last year. This shows the reduction in the number of dwellings approved could in effect be compressed further by developers choosing not to release stock. Across the stock I am working on, the number of appointments and sales has

increased week on week. The people actively looking for and buying property have been a mix of purchaser demographics but have shared the belief there is a significant proportion of our local population without concerns about their employment. Most of them perceive market conditions as favourable and are ready, willing and able to buy now. Despite the uncertainty currently caused to some parts of the economy, the reduced supply, underlying demand and confidence amongst buyers and sellers highlights that now appears to be as good a time as any to be making the decision to buy or to sell.

Jones announces retirement The ACT Work Safety Commissioner Greg Jones has announced his retirement from the ACT Public Service, with his replacement to be announced in the coming weeks. Mr Jones, who has held the position since July 2016, said he is proud of the government’s focus on industrial work, health and safety, as well as the “enhanced awareness of employers of their responsibilities through the Work Health and Safety Act”. “As a result of our active engagement with all stakeholders and our enforcement activities, more workers returned home safely, and I am pleased to have led this

important work. WorkSafe has a strong and experienced investigation team which focuses on professionally gathering evidence to ensure successful regulatory action is achieved,” he said. WorkSafe ACT recently undertook a blitz of residential construction sites, after two onsite deaths in as many months earlier this year, which saw a number of notices issued due to safety concerns. ACT Minister for Workplace Safety Suzanne Orr thanked Mr Jones for his work and service “to improve the health and safety of all working people across the ACT”.

Picture perfect Sutton NSW 5 Desalis Street ‘Riverview’ at 5 Desalis Street in Sutton is a picturesque country home in close proximity to the Nation’s Capital. “Tucked away behind the privacy of electric gates, ‘Riverview’ is a graceful, doublestorey, country residence, providing a sense of grandeur and a timeless elegance that almost transports you to another era!” say Bradys Real Estate directors John and Nicola Brady. They say this five-bedroom family property is “simply stunning”. “This elevated home is set in tiered stone gardens with lush green lawns and captures some of the most picturesque views that Sutton has to offer. Each room perfectly frames the views of rolling fields, hills and the Yass River

winding through this property. “This home has everything you need! Pool, tennis courts, stables and arenas as well as Yass River frontage set on 12 acres.” Enjoy a lifestyle filled with entertaining with this home’s striking formal areas, including the pool courtyard with French doors, the formal lounge and the separate dining room that can seat around 20 people. The master bedroom boasts a walk-in robe and ensuite, with an outdoor patio for taking in the countryside views. The luxury continues throughout the home, with an open fireplace, chandeliers, large entrance foyer and under-floor heating in the upstairs bathrooms. Comfort is assured, with wall-panelled

electric heaters, double glazing and 18 solar panels. Outside, the lush surrounds include a wisteria-covered pergola, green lawns and gardens with roses, vegetables and fruit trees – serviced by water tanks and bore. An abundance of parking, including double garage and large farm shed, means there’s room for everyone, including stabling for four horses. Nicola and John say this home is perfect for “a buyer who loves to entertain or wants to raise their family in a stunning country

atmosphere so close to Canberra”. “Someone looking to escape to the country with the ability of a city lifestyle due to its short 20-minute drive to Canberra’s CBD.”

Rural elegance Wallaroo NSW 370 Oakey Creek Road This stunning property comprises two residences set over (approx.) 16 acres (6.47 Ha) in beautiful, secluded Wallaroo, enjoying lush views from every angle. “Crimson sunsets are a regular feature that illuminate the dusk sky and rolling hills,” says Ray White Canberra licensed agent ACT and NSW, Mark Johnstone. “Wallaroo is one of the most sought after rural lifestyle areas near Canberra given its close proximity to all the city conveniences, yet far enough away to enjoy a peaceful lifestyle.” Tarra Homestead, the property’s five-bedroom residence, boasts a huge range of features including in-zone slab heating, hydronic heating, combustion fireplace, three-metre high ceilings, country-style kitchen, heated inground pool and a luxe master retreat with ensuite and walk-in robe. The main residence also boasts full-length windows to soak in the view, grand entrance way, built-in barbecue and outdoor entertaining areas in the stunning grounds. “There is also ample shedding and multiple car accommodation,” Johnstone says. “Tarra Homestead offers an

abundance of elegant living areas and the modern three-bedroom Tarra Cottage includes granny flat and studio. “The opportunity is there for the lucky buyer to enjoy country walks on their own piece of paradise including exploring the banks of Oakey Creek which runs through the property. The grounds immediately surrounding the homes are very much a parkland setting with an abundance of mature trees and beautiful gardens. He says this feature-packed property would be ideally suited to “an extended family, for two separate families seeking segregated living quarters, or those after executive country living”. “[There is] the option of renting out the second residence or exploring the possibility of running a bed and breakfast style accommodation.”

ONCE IN A LIFETIME

The iconic property with two beachfront blocks. This residence is a cutting edge masterpiece from an award winning architect and was granted an occupancy certificate in December 2010. Take the stairs down on to a quaint secluded beach directly in front. Each of the three bedrooms has its own ensuite. There is a glass breezeway from the master to the living space. The cost of this home is unfathomable. This is a sexy house with glamorous proportions where no expense has been spared. Whilst the owners’ only used the property three days a month over seven years, being Sydney based. They had growing concerns with mould and some building defects. A heart breaking legal battle ensued that was resolved this year. They have decided to walk away. The owners dream home is now a project they have no desire to fix. This creates an opportunity for you to buy a property that cost in excess of $3 million dollars at a huge discount. How much will it cost to fix the issue? Are you a builder? Do you know a builder? Bring them with you. Reports should be read prior to inspecting. Private inspections only. 62

celebrity birthday KATE HUDSON 19 April 1979 Kate normally has a very sunny and charming personality which wins her friends and influences others in her favour. However, she must be careful of what she says and does as she has a habit of putting her foot in her mouth. From August onwards, her star power starts to rise again, as does her popularity. Her strong compassionate streak will always be there for her family and friends, but she needs to be careful who she trusts, as not everyone thinks like her.

The more attention you pay to good nutrition and health practices, the more resilient you will be, which is especially important at this time. Conserve your nervous and emotional energies, too. Stay calm and focused – it will greatly boost your inner reserves of stamina and fortitude.

Household duties and chores will be hard work and could set a fast, strenuous tempo over the next few days. A simmering conflict in some quarters could erupt abruptly, presenting an ideal opportunity to deal with it directly, forthrightly and positively to ensure it is resolved long-term.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY Watch for friction on the job, as the atmosphere or conditions could get a little tense, plus you could feel frazzled occasionally and react to situations in an emotional way. Soothe yourself and the atmosphere with calmness and patience and you will help promote smoother work flows.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE If you’re in an established union, a common focus with a special project, the joy of your children and sharing highlights or achievements with them, important decisions involving significant amounts of money, or making plans for a long-awaited goal will reinforce the loving ties and union between you.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG Surprisingly, this will be an expansive month socially – even if it is only online, where you could meet some interesting new people. Lay the foundations for friendships and enjoy yourself with pleasing social companions, your friends and the friends of your partner and children.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT Auspicious trends on the job throughout the month should bring intriguing offers and rewarding results for your endeavours. Your relationship with a superior or a colleague in a senior position should be very positive and congenial, or will improve considerably.

My favourite things SHEFFIELD TEAPOT While writing or to create a peaceful oasis in the juggle of the day, I love the ritual of a long, slow pot of tea. The pot is as important as its contents. I bought this one second-hand for a song. Sheffield silver. Think of the conversations it’s joined since 1880!

RAISED GARDEN BED

Photo Kerrie Brewer

The apocalypse of recent months has been deeply disturbing: fire, smoke, flood, hail. At Christmas, I asked Santa for a raised garden bed, beeswax food wrappings, a SodaStream. Planting seedlings immediately before a week-long heatwave? Not my best effort. The irony of having just published a book about a landscape architect doesn’t escape me.

CREATIVITY I had the luxury of a year off work to write Desire Lines thanks to grants from the Australia Council and artsACT. Returning to the office was a wrench. To counter the shock, I spent weekends painting a jungle on the wall of my house (After Rousseau). A salute to creativity.

Felicity Volk Novelist

Felicity Volk’s second novel, Desire Lines, set largely in Canberra, has just been published. A long-term Canberra resident, Felicity arrived in 1989 to join the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. After diplomatic postings in Bangladesh and Laos, and following the birth of her two daughters, she began writing for publication. Her award-winning first novel, Lightning, which begins during the January 2003 bushfires, was described as “astonishing ... a bolt of brilliance”. Desire Lines has received rave reviews as “epic, tender, heart-rending – a story resonating in its spectacular landscapes”. Against the backdrop of Canberra’s growth from farmland in the 1920s to a modern national capital, the novel explores a compulsive, unconventional love that spans decades and crosses continents. Felicity divides her time between the world of foreign policy, writing, painting murals and a newfound love of composting and growing vegetables as an antidote to the despair of climate change.

FAMILY Life is messy; you end up in places you don’t anticipate. But it’s possible to heal old wounds, be forgiven and forgive, recover love and peace. My ex, my gorgeous daughters and I have dinner together each week. It’s a celebration of abiding love and grace.

ANDON LAMP Made for me by an 83-year-old friend in Wisconsin (USA), this Andon-style Japanese lamp is as much about friendship and love as light and beauty. George painstakingly crafted it from cocobolo wood he had been saving for 40 years and gingko leaves from a tree he planted himself.
