This week... From the editor As if I needed a nudge, some lessons I’m taking from the continuing COVID-19 pandemic are to find joy in each day and to not take things for granted. One never knows when circumstances – personal, local, national and/or global – will change beyond one’s control. Some readers have decried our lack of social photos lately. Please remember, basically all social events have been cancelled due to pandemic control measures. We welcome selfies of readers participating in virtual events; email them to news@canberraweekly.com.au And to those readers who are missing your free TV guide inside your free Canberra Weekly magazine, please know it is very minor collateral damage in the global economic downturn caused by COVID-19. Over the previous 11 years, its production has come at significant expense to our family business, both to purchase from our supplier (no, it isn’t compiled in-house) and in printing (four pages times 43,000 copies, 50 weeks a year, 11+ years). We decided to let go of the guide so we can continue printing our community magazine and put the savings towards keeping as many of our team employed as possible. I trust you understand, and perhaps even empathise. I know our fellow small business friends adversely impacted by this pandemic do. While we’re “all in this together”, some are in much deeper than others – especially our front-line health workers and those in essential industries. Virtual pat on the back. #staysafe #stayhome - Julie Samaras

The number of weekday journeys across the Territory’s public transport system was down by 88.5% in the week ending 12 April compared with the same week in 2019. Photo: Denholm Samaras.
Trams run near empty as light rail turns one With everything that’s happened subsequently, it’s hard to believe it’s just over one year since Canberra Metro Light Rail Stage 1’s maiden public voyage departed the city station on Easter Saturday 2019 to shoot up Northbourne toward Gungahlin. A much-maligned project that divided opinion across the national capital, mainly by what side of the lake you live on, to date the project has been a resounding success according to the ACT Government’s own metrics. Before the COVID-19 pandemic there were, on average, 15,047
passenger boardings each day, numbers that weren’t expected until 2021. The busiest month in the first year of operations was May, during the free travel period, with over 460,000 customers travelling, followed by October 2019 with over 411,000 boardings. The most frequented light rail stop was Alinga Street in the City with nearly 40% of light rail trips starting at that station. The number of weekday journeys across the Territory’s public transport system was down by 88.5% in the week ending 12
April 2020 compared with the same week in 2019, following patrons being instructed to refrain from using public transport unless essential. (Figures for week ending 19 April 2020 were not available at print deadline.) Public Transport Association of Canberra chair, Ryan Hemsley, supported Transport Canberra’s approach of retaining current public transport service levels during the crisis. “As restrictions are lifted in the months ahead, we urge the ACT Government to consider increases to select services to ensure that social distancing can continue for as long as is required,” Mr Hemsley said. It appears users are happy with the service, too. According to the Government’s latest customer survey, 94% of customers were satisfied with the ease of use of light rail and it now accounts for around 20% of all public transport boardings across the ACT. In February, services had to be increased during peak times to manage the demand and crowding on light rail vehicles. Mr Hemsley said he believes “similar patronage increases can be expected as future stages of the network are rolled out in the years ahead”. So, what do these times of social distancing and unheralded economic circumstances
mean for the future of the Barr Government’s signature infrastructure project? Transport Minister Chris Steel told Canberra Weekly that major infrastructure projects like the future stages of light rail will have an important role to play in Canberra’s economic recovery by creating new construction jobs. “ACT Government is closely monitoring risks and actively considering ways to ensure the projects continue progressing,” Mr Steel said. “Site investigations have commenced on Light Rail Stage 2A (city to Commonwealth Park), with findings to be used to inform the project’s detailed design.” Commonwealth and Territory works and planning approvals will be sought later in 2020, while construction work remains scheduled to begin in 2021. Mr Hemsley said social distancing measures also present an opportunity for both the ACT Government and National Capital Authority (NCA) to conduct important works during a rare period of reduced road traffic. “We call on both the ACT Government and NCA to work collaboratively so that that these projects can be fast-tracked in a manner that provides the greatest long-term benefit, while minimising disruption to road users in the short term.” - Denholm Samaras
ACT appoints first female Work Health and Safety Commissioner Jacqueline Agius has been announced as the ACT’s first female Work Health and Safety Commissioner. Workplace Safety Minister Suzanne Orr said Ms Agius’ appointment comes as WorkSafe ACT begins its “new, independent” journey, with the commissioner’s first task to develop a compliance and enforcement policy. 8
canberraweekly.com.au
“The policy will clearly articulate the way in which WorkSafe will operate, including its aims, approach and the key principles underpinning how it regulates,” Ms Orr said. Ms Agius currently works with the Australian Education Union, ACT Branch, and was a member of the ACT Work Safety Council from 2016 to 2019. The announcement
of her appointment comes after current commissioner Greg Jones announced his retirement last week. Ms Agius said she was looking forward “to the challenge” of leading the agency, and that it was “an exciting opportunity to ensure that workers are front and centre of work safety in the ACT”. “Fundamental to a successful
economy and fair workplaces is the right for workers to return home after a day’s work in the same state that they left home for work in the morning. “I look forward to working with unions, business, workers and government to achieve this.” Ms Agius will commence her appointment on 28 April for a fiveyear term.

cover story Honouring Anzac Day in isolation 25 April will no doubt look different this year, with Anzac Day services across the country cancelled due to the impact of COVID-19. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said while we won’t be gathering this year, people around Australia can still honour the service and sacrifice of veterans and serving defence personnel from home. “But we will still remember the sacrifice of those who gave so much for us at Gallipoli and on many fronts, as we ourselves give what we can to protect Australian lives while we face this terrible virus.” The ACT’s Chief Health Officer Kerryn Coleman echoed this sentiment, urging Canberrans to find ways of commemorating Anzac Day that comply with physical distancing. “Canberrans have been incredible in their response so far and I thank them for the efforts; however, this pandemic is still ongoing and large gatherings and trips away over the Anzac Day weekend are simply not possible this year,” Dr Coleman said. While the Australian War Memorial remains
closed to the public until further notice due to the pandemic, it will go ahead with a private service to be broadcast live across the nation. Acting Memorial Director Anne Bennie said the revised commemorative ceremony will take place “within the heart of the Memorial” in the Commemorative Area and the Hall of Memory. The ceremony is expected to retain some traditional elements, with wreaths to be laid by dignitaries as well as senior representatives of current and former veterans. As well as tuning into this year’s ceremony, Australians are also encouraged to pause and reflect at home through the RSL’s #lightupthedawn campaign, by standing on their driveway with a torch or candle immediately following the televised service. Similarly, the Driveway at Dawn campaign from Soldier On and volunteer group Aussies and Kiwis for ANZACs has an app (Anzac Day 2020) that will prompt Australians to head out to the driveway at 5.55am to observe a minute’s silence. Federal Veterans’ Affairs and Defence Personnel Minister Darren Chester said
The Australian War Memorial’s usual crowds will be nowhere to be seen at this year’s Anzac Day services in Canberra, with Australians urged to commemorate and reflect at home. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
“whether it’s a solitary driveway tribute, baking Anzac biscuits, a small ceremony with your household, sharing a message for our service personnel, or watching the televised service from the Australian War Memorial on the morning of 25 April, I encourage everyone to pause, reflect and say a simple ‘thank you for your service’.” The Anzac Day commemorative service will be held at 5.30am on Anzac Day, 25 April, broadcast live on ABC and streamed online.

news Concerned citizens contribute to safer community Every two minutes throughout 2019, Crime Stoppers was contacted to share information about an array of unsolved crimes and suspicious activity, leading to an average of 100 apprehensions by police every week across the nation. The organisation released its annual results on Wednesday 15 April which showed that by contacting Crime Stoppers in 2019, people directly contributed to a total of 18,686 charges being laid by police, which included arrests for murder, armed hold-ups, drug manufacturing and dealing, serious fraud and more. Locally, the public provided Crime Stoppers ACT with 14,266 contacts from which police were able to extract 3,052 information reports. Chair of Crime Stoppers ACT, Diana Forrester, was particularly pleased with the conversion rate and thanked the public for their assistance. “We think that the reason there are more information reports is that online reporting tends to be more detailed,” she said. “Those information reports are processed
by the police and actioned.” Ms Forrester said this resulted in 32 arrests and 193 charges laid. Overall, the number of people contacting Crime Stoppers ACT continues to increase. Ms Forrester said there were 2,030 more contacts in 2019 compared to 2018, and a 75% increase on contacts from 2017. “I was pleased to see the consistent increase in reporting and the number of information reports that resulted from the contact because it means we are receiving quality information.” She said Crime Stoppers want people to keep sharing what they know about all types of crime or suspicious activity. “Every piece of information can make a real difference,” Ms Forrester said. “People don’t need to provide formal evidence of a crime or get involved in any court proceedings – they just need to know that if something doesn’t feel right or they only have a suspicion about something, then they can still share what they know without having to say who they are,” she said. “People stepping up is more important
Zed SESELJA SENATOR FOR THE ACT
than ever during the current pandemic, and we want everyone to be the eyes and ears of their community – whether that’s contacting us about a break-in on a local business, drug dealing nearby, robbery, property damage or more. We want information about all types of crimes and any suspicious activity.” In terms of the current pandemic, Ms Forrester, who is also Chair of Crime Stoppers Australia, said nationally there has been a large increase in some jurisdictions with people reporting quarantine breaches. However, Crime Stoppers should not be the principal channel for these reports. For all general enquiries, including to make a report of non-compliance of the public health directions with referrals to ACT Health Protection Services, ACT Policing or Access Canberra Fair Trading, the community can contact the COVID-19 Helpline on 6207 7244 (7 days a week 8am-8pm) or fill in an online form via accesscanberra.act.gov.au - Allison Turnbull

$10m upgrade for Queanbeyan Queanbeyan’s CBD is set for an upgrade thanks to $10 million in government funding. Member for Monaro John Barilaro said the funds from the $170 million Drought Stimulus Package will be used to improve pedestrian access, boost safety and, importantly, support local retail. The upgrades are planned for a section of Monaro Street, between Crawford and Lowe Streets. It is one of six stages of a plan to transform
the Queanbeyan CBD over the next 10 years. Mr Barilaro said the upgrade will deliver new wider walkways, improved drainage, lighting, seating and road refuges. The upgrades form part of the broader CBD Masterplan endorsed by QueanbeyanPalerang Regional Council and will reduce traffic noise and manage the flow of traffic in the CBD, providing greater safety for drivers and pedestrians.
QPRC offers assistance Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council (QPRC) is implementing a range of strategies to assist local residents, businesses and community organisations during the COVID-19 pandemic. Under NSW legislation, councils are not able to waive or rebate rate charges, but QPRC has identified measures to provide assistance where possible. For residents and ratepayers this includes: to extend the modified approach to apply for hardship relief to residential and business ratepayers, enabling employees who have lost their jobs and businesses that have closed or have been restricted trade as a consequence of government orders. Relief options include deferral of rate instalments and extending regular rate payments over two years, and the waiver of interest charges, under approved payment plans. Assistance for businesses and community organisations includes: to waive or defer rents for commercial operators leasing council property who can demonstrate financial distress due to COVID-19, in line with Commonwealth/State Government codes; continue to waive footpath and related fees for businesses; and offer deferred developer contributions for commercial development applications in the recovery period.

The Football For Fires bushfire relief match has been rescheduled from 23 May to Saturday 3 October at Bankwest Stadium with all ticketholders to be accommodated at the new venue. Most of the superstars of football who had committed to the #FootballForFires game in May had indicated they would travel to Australia for this important fundraising event later in the year, with additional players now to be added. The event will honour and recognise all fire-fighting agencies and State Emergency Services personnel who were involved in the recent bushfire crisis. All proceeds from the match will go toward the restoration and improvement of local football clubs and facilities in fire-affected areas nationwide.
Walk Safely to School Day The Pedestrian Council of Australia has advised that Walk Safely to School Day has been postponed. The annual event, now in its 21st year, was scheduled for 15 May. Chairman and CEO of the Pedestrian Council, Harold Scruby, said they are hoping to be able to reschedule the event later in the year.

Many charities across the ACT are urgently seeking internet dongles to help their clients – families and tertiary students affected by COVID-19 – stay connected. Many families and individuals who would typically rely on public and school facilities for internet access now find themselves without a way to stay connected or complete school work from home. The dongle will give families the means to maintain their children’s studies, help newly unemployed workers gain access to job search or online employment, as well as giving individuals who struggle with mental and physical health needs the ability to access care services from the safety of their home. Charities are looking for internet dongles with or without credit. Items can be dropped-off, posted to or pick-up by the charity. To donate, visit givit.org.au/items-needed, search ‘dongle’ and select requests located in ACT. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant charity to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off.

sport At a glance Sports sector funding The ACT Government announced on 17 April that it will support Canberra’s sports sector through the challenges of COVID-19 with funding and relief equivalent to $3.3 million. This includes an immediate financial injection of $700,000 across ACT peak sport and recreation bodies and early access to approximately $1.5 million through the 2021 Sport and Recreation Grants Program for the 28 triennially funded organisations. Government sportsground hire fees will be waived for the winter season and for existing bookings from midMarch, estimated at $616,000. This is in addition to a six-month waiver of rent and hire fees for community groups using ACT Government properties, which had already provided an $80,000 rental reduction for relevant sporting organisations.

Get yourself into the kitchen for the long weekend! Our food writer Libby Kimber brings you two long weekend recipes, with, of course, a classic recipe for Anzac biscuits.
Sweet potato galette Recipe and image courtesy of Australian Sweet Potatoes australiansweetpotatoes.com.au
Mix the olive oil and garlic in a bowl and place the sweet potato slices in the mixture so they are coated. Place the butter in a frying pan, add the sliced onion and sauté for about 10 minutes until soft and caramelised. Remove from heat and set aside to cool.
2 Tbsp olive oil 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 1/2 medium sweet potato (200g), sliced 1.5mm thick 2 Tbsp butter 1 red onion, peeled and sliced 1 rectangle shortcrust pastry, defrosted 100g feta, crumbled 1 egg yolk Fresh thyme and sage, to serve 18
Preheat oven to 200°C and line a baking tray with baking paper.
canberraweekly.com.au
Trim the edges of the pastry so it resembles a rough oval shape and place onto the prepared baking tray. Using half the feta, arrange a layer of the cheese on the pastry leaving a 4cm border, followed by the caramelised onion. Now arrange a layer of the sweet potato slices over the top, working in a circle with slices overlapping, until all the slices are used. Now fold the border of the pastry inwards, brush with egg yolk, and top the sweet potato with remaining feta. Bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown. Top the galette with fresh herbs like thyme and sage, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper.

Preheat the oven to 180°C fan-forced and line a baking tray with baking paper. Put the pumpkin on the tray and roast for 30 minutes or until tender. Meanwhile, to make the dukkah, toast the pepitas, sesame seeds, cumin seeds, coriander seeds and sumac in a dry frying pan over medium heat for 3 minutes or until fragrant, shaking the pan to avoid burning. Remove from the pan and grind with a spice grinder or mortar and pestle until the seeds are split but not powdery.

Now streaming Vivarium (M) After seeing the habits of a cuckoo, young teacher Gemma (Imogen Poots) meets up with her gardener partner Tom (Jesse Eisenberg) to visit a real estate agent in a search for their starter home. Once there, a strange estate agent named Martin (Jonathan Aris) convinces the couple to follow him to a new suburban development called Yonder, to show them home number 9. Suburban horror movies serve as a metaphor for the anxiety and existential dread that conformity and the mundanity of everyday life can bring. The Stepford Wives showed the peer pressures of keeping up with the Joneses, A Nightmare on Elm Street poked through the shallow veneer of the picket-fenced neighbourhood ideal, then Rear Window and The Burbs ripped it down by revealing what the neighbours, and by extension, what anyone, may have bubbling beneath the surface. Trapped in a never-ending maze of perfect, cookie-cutter replica houses, Gemma and Tom are also trapped in their daily routine and responsibilities; rising with the sun, eating prepackaged tasteless food and raising a strange child
who coldly mimics them as a form of growth. Any greater goal the couple may have is a source of hope, which may, in itself, also be a source of horror. Verdict: A grim, nihilistic but intriguing mystery which is all too easy to figure out quite early in the piece due to some blunt foreshadowing. Vivarium may have fared better as a vignette ala The Twilight Zone. 3.5 stars. - Luke McWilliams |themovieclub.net Vivarium is available now on VOD at umbrellaent. com.au and will be streaming on Google Play, iTunes, Telstra, Fetch and Foxtel on Demand from 6 May.

Book talk For Anzac Day, 25 April, this week Jeff Popple reviews three books of wartime service. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com The Battles for Kokoda Plateau by David W. Cameron Allen & Unwin, $32.99
In July 1941, a large force of Japanese soldiers landed on the north-eastern coastline of Papua. Their target was Port Moresby. Standing in their way was a small Australian militia force and a Papuan Infantry Battalion. For three weeks, this outnumbered force fought courageously to hold the Kokoda Plateau and keep the airstrip out of Japanese hands. Well respected Canberra historian David Cameron provides a lucid and interesting account of the fight for Kokoda Plateau and of the travails of two ragtag groups of missionaries and lost soldiers trapped behind enemy lines. Full of first-hand accounts, this is an absorbing read. 20

Code Name Hélène by Ariel Lawhon
Radio Girl by David Duffy
Simon & Schuster, $32.99
Allen & Unwin, $29.99
This novelisation of the wartime efforts of the much-loved Australian heroine Nancy Wake, makes for highly entertaining and informative reading. Lawhon uses two separate timelines to tell of Nancy’s role in smuggling people, including Allied soldiers, out of France during the early days of World War II, which earned her the moniker of ‘The White Mouse’, and then of her later involvement as a British Special Operations Executive operative with the Maquis. She went on to become of the most ruthlessly effective leaders in the French Resistance and a major problem for the Nazis. A nicely paced and very readable story.
Radio Girl plays tribute to Violet McKenzie, an amazing, although now largely forgotten, woman who made a major contribution to Australia’s wartime efforts. Violet was the first woman to enrol and graduate from an Australian engineering course and became the centre of the wireless radio industry in Sydney. With the approach of World War II, she saw a need for Morse Code operators and trained dozens of young women in its use. These women went on to instruct thousands of men and women during the war, and in 1941 she was instrumental in establishing the Women’s Royal Australian Naval Service. A timely biography of a remarkable woman.

wellbeing Immune system checklist: zinc and vitamin D I was talking this week with Live Well’s holistic GP, Dr Orla Teahan, about key immune system nutrients. Dr Teahan commented that many people she’s testing have low or borderline low zinc and vitamin D levels and how that was a concern, given their status as a key immune system nutrients.
Let’s talk about zinc Zinc is found in abundance in red meat, eggs, dairy and seafood, especially oysters, as well as flaxseeds, pumpkin seeds, nuts, chickpeas, tofu, tempeh, alfalfa, peas and, thankfully, dark chocolate (although, if dark chocolate is your main dietary source you might be in trouble!). The prevalence of zinc deficiency may be
because we’re eating less red meat and seafood than previously. The plant-based sources of zinc also contain phytate and other inhibitors of zinc absorption, meaning that despite adequate dietary intake, you may not be absorbing sufficient amounts. Fortunately, you can ensure plant-based zinc is more readily absorbed by the body by soaking and sprouting legumes and nuts. Plant-based foods that have been fermented (e.g. choosing sourdough bread, which has undergone a fermentation process) also help your body absorb zinc.
What about Vitamin D? Vitamin D, as we all know, is made by the body when our skin is exposed to sunlight. As little as 10 minutes of sun a day on bare skin (arms, legs, face and back) without sunscreen is considered enough. However, as days get shorter and work hours take up more of our sunlight hours, it’s understandable why many of us are missing out. Oily fish has some of the highest quantities of vitamin D in food sources. Plant-based sources are limited, which is why manufacturers add vitamin D to many commercially available foods that are labelled ‘fortified’, including some milks, breads and juices.
WITH WESLEY SMITH DIRECTOR, LIVE WELL SPA & WELLNESS CENTRE MANUKA livewellnaturally.com.au meditatewithwes.com
Vitamin D is crucial to our immune system’s ability to mount an effective defence once it comes into contact with a pathogen. Vitamin D deficiency is also prevalent in autoimmune disease, so if you have an autoimmune condition, or family history of autoimmune disease, it would be wise to find out what your vitamin D levels are. The bottom line is that whilst we have access to exceptional fresh produce, many of us are not getting sufficient key nutrients from our diet. However, a simple blood test can tell you if your zinc and vitamin D levels are adequate. Armed with that knowledge, you can either remedy the situation or rest easy knowing your immune system has the raw materials it requires. Nest in peace When it comes to designing your baby’s nursery, CW Home editor Allison Turnbull has pulled together some expert tips to ensure the transition is as seamless – and stylish – as possible. Being able to mimic the night-time at any time in a baby’s room also helps to create the ideal environment for sleep. Developing a design plan is a must as it not only allows you to cover off those nonnegotiable nursery items, but also keeps you aligned with your budget. With so much room for creativity, here are three key things to consider when designing your baby’s nursery:
Pick a theme A good first step is to set a theme, while striking a balance between practicality and trend. An easy way to do this is to choose a gender-neutral colour for your walls. Oversized murals and feature walls are popular, reflected through colour pops pulled from them and echoed across the room. Floral and natural prints, such as leaves and trees, are a favourite, bringing in a hint of the outside. Many people are becoming bolder with their
blind choices, choosing patterned and textured blinds when styling rooms, while monochrome continues to be a popular choice. Safety first Safety in your baby’s room is a number one priority. By designing a safe space from the get-go, you can factor in things like trip hazards, sharp corners and cupboard locks, right through to ensuring your window coverings are child-safe and cord-free. The workstation A key consideration when planning your nursery is to keep everything easily accessible from one central point. Nappies, wipes, clothes, change table covers, bin, bub’s favourite teddy – it all needs to be at arm’s length. If bottle feeding (expressed breastmilk or formula), a fridge in your baby’s room can be a gamechanger. You could create a mini workstation, including bottle steriliser and warmer, fridge, bottle stash, etc. – ideal for those late night feeds or emergencies. By having an easily-accessible feeding area, you’ll need fewer trips to the kitchen, resulting in more relaxed, well-rested parents and happy baby.
Monochrome continues to be a popular choice for a nursery, like this striking black and white Luxaflex Kids Print collection Zebra print, available in both blockout and translucent. Photo: Luxaflex.
Design inspo Stylist Bree Leech transformed a bland, allwhite kid’s bedroom using the Dulux Grounded palette which combines gentle, earthy neutrals and warm whites with accents of soft coral and lavender to create a cosy, laid-back feel. “This bedroom’s all-white palette made it feel a little uninviting - the exact opposite of what you want in a child’s room. The room itself has great features, including a high ceiling, a beautiful, solid timber floor, French doors, plenty of natural light and a striking brick fireplace,” Bree said. “I wanted to add warmth and personality to the space so that its little occupant would enjoy spending time here. I aimed to highlight the room’s best features, detract from the less appealing ones – and spend next to nothing. To keep the budget in check, we kept the main pieces of furniture – a feature toddler bed with timber detailing and a curvy armchair and ottoman.” Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux colour and communications manager, added, “it’s important not to add too much clutter to a child’s room, particularly if it’s small, as you want to give them space to relax and play. We left plenty of breathing space and kept the sheer linen curtains to allow soft light to filter in”.

Autumn is one of the best times to explore your local nature reserves, get some fresh air and exercise, and enjoy the seasonal flowers. Flowers of The ACT & Region by Don and Betty Wood (2005) is an excellent field guide for identifying local flowering plants. The following are some of the many delightful forbs (herbaceous flowering plants other than grass) in flower now: Calotis lappulacea, known as Yellow burr-daisy, produces masses of bright yellow, globular flowers for many months of the year, followed by round burr-like seed heads that turn brown when ripe. and widespread plant to around 15cm, occurring in open forests, woodlands and grasslands. Purple daisy-like flowers with yellow centres occur mostly in spring and with spot flowering in autumn after rain. This is followed by distinct fluffy seed heads. Glycine tabacina, known as Variable glycine, is a scrambling plant from the legume family. The leaves are in threes and with purple flowers appearing in milder weather. Seed pods around 3cm long, form soon thereafter.

Beachfront showstopper Long Beach NSW 171-173 Northcove Road In a beachfront opportunity like no other, this property boasts two blocks with water views of Maloneys Beach. “Two beachfront blocks, next to reserve so that it is like a private compound overlooking the beach,” says Christine Ewin, managing director of My Agent Christine Ewin, “the best home I have been inside of in my 20 years of real estate; this is like something you
see on Grand Designs”. “The finish is spectacular!” The house does require some rectification work, and Ewin says this stunning residence would be perfect for “someone in the construction industry”, who could look to “build on the vacant block and rectify any issues with the house at a minimum cost”. “[There are] full details available of
rectification work required,” she says, “the vacant block next door would sell for above $800,000.” The three-bedroom, two-storey home is a modern marvel, and boasts a range of showstopping design features, including the bespoke kitchen with Miele appliances and walk-in pantry, the glass breezeway from the master to the living area, and ensuites to accompany each bedroom. Entertaining family and friends will be no issue at all, with a separate rumpus area and a range of outdoor spaces to take in the spectacular surroundings. Enjoy beach views from the home’s many windows or the myriad outdoor entertaining spaces, or simply take the stairs directly out front down to the sand.
“The home is the very last property on the entry to Maloneys Beach,” Ewin says. “Flat beach front blocks with an elevated view like a cliff top is a unicorn; no sand dunes impeding the view and no restrictive rising sea level issues that you find with normal beach fronts.”

Weekly market wrap Industry leaders at the forefront of technology Property professionals have rapidly adapted to the current environment by embracing technology; it has become common practice for buyers to be able to view properties virtually from a convenient location. Local master builders Classic Constructions have been designing, crafting and building quality, custom homes to give their clients exactly what they want. When asked about how they’re able to still do this, sales advisor Peter Stewart said “a lot of the things we already had in place for our overseas clients, including Skype, Zoom and phone calls”. Display villages have been unable to regularly open to the public. Stewart sees this as an opportunity to work with more people at the early stages of considering
building their new home. “We’re using Facebook Live for a general look around the home and to answer questions. For those ready to start building their new home, we’re still able to show them our stunning Balcombe and Kew display homes by appointment.” Stewart sees opportunity to showcase his company’s leadership by doing things differently: “we plan to focus on the innovation in our display homes as part of our virtual experience,” he said. “An example of this is our awardwinning Balcombe display home at Denman Prospect [which] has a pocket sliding door system which recesses back into the wall. It has recessed blinds to improve energy efficiency and have clean lines; we
also used recycled bricks to add some warmth to the contemporary design.” Blackshaw Real Estate agent Mario Sanfrancesco had increased pressure to move quickly due to having multiple auction campaigns on the market. “Lucky for us, the technology for adapting to auctions was already there. It just wasn’t readily used by agents, buyers and sellers. We had a number of public auctions which had to shift to online.” Changes to how business is conducted has affected all market participants: “buyers have adapted quicker and easier than everyone else. Our first couple of online auctions were a bit clunky, however now we have everything streamlined,” said Sanfrancesco.
WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST
Having recently broken sales records in Griffith and Narrabundah, Sanfrancesco confidently explained his assessment of market conditions. “I’ve sold some really nice homes in the last three to four weeks. Once you move into the upper echelons of the market, buyers may look for several years prior to finding the right home. I’ve found there are some owners putting their plans to sell on hold; however, on either side of that there is a comfortable balance between seller and buyer demand.” Adaption of technology will forever change how people seek their new homes by removing layers of unnecessary friction.
Wind farm soars above reserve
Grants target online projects
Over 500 acres near Yass, set to be home to part of the Bango Wind Farm, has sold under the hammer for $375,000 over reserve. ‘Woolangubra’ at 3047 Wargeila Road sold for $1.6 million in an online auction on 9 April, in what Ray White Rural Canberra/Yass sales agent George Southwell believes to be “the first wind farm that has ever been sold publicly in Australia”.
Applications for the 2020-21 ACT Heritage Grants Program are now open, targeting projects that will “move Canberra’s history online”. “This year we’re asking for proposals that are developed in line with current social distancing requirements,” said ACT Environment and Heritage Minister Mick Gentleman. “This could include projects to bring our heritage to life in new ways like online resources and
“I haven’t been able to find another wind farm sale like it in Australia so I am certain it could potentially be the first,” he said. The winning bidders also own the adjacent land, and plan to expand their sheep operation. Woolangubra will be home to part of the wind farm, which will comprise a total of 46 wind turbines, expected to be completed and operational in 2021.

Rooms with a view Fadden 5 Rawlings Place This family home in the South Canberra suburb of Fadden celebrates and appreciates the iconic views across the ACT region. “Architecturally designed to take full advantage of the panoramic views on offer, this generous family home has been lovingly maintained over the years and is presented to please,” says Ray White Canberra sales manager and auctioneer, Alec Brown. “A segregated floor plan ensures space for the family plus the secluded location backing reserve guarantees maximum privacy,” he says. “Ideal for entertaining, a variety of outdoor areas and a deep in-ground pool cater for every occasion.”
Spread over multiple levels, the home includes living, dining, family and rumpus areas, perfect for a range of family living and entertaining needs. The master bedroom is segregated from the rest of the house, with an ensuite, walk-in robe and private deck, while the rumpus or fourth bedroom is on its own level and includes an ensuite and built-in robes. Brown says 5 Rawlings Place is ideal for “families looking for a long-term home that will grow with their changing needs”. Alongside the sparkling pool outside is a sundeck, with a range of entertaining options, as well as a double lock-up garage and double carport. The home backs onto reserve at the base of MacArthur Hill. “First and foremost, the views are arguably some of the best found in Canberra, taking in a full panoramic aspect of the Brindabella Mountain ranges. With only a handful of homes in this quiet cul-de-sac, number 5 is one of the few who back the reserve,” Brown says. He says inspections are available by appointment, while the online listing features a video walk-through and a full 3D scan of the house.

This iconic property with two beachfront blocks, with separate titles was bank valued 6 weeks ago for $1.5 million. The residence, a cutting edge masterpiece from an award winning architect and was granted an occupancy certificate in December 2010. It cost in excess of $1.5 million to build. Standing in the living area facing North East staring down the barrel of Maloneys Beach - sand, waves crashing, jaw dropping view. Take the stairs down on to a quaint secluded beach directly in front. Each of the three bedrooms has its own ensuite. There is a glass breezeway from the master to the living space. The cost of this home is unfathomable. This is a sexy house with glamorous proportions where no expense has been spared. Whilst the owners’ only used the property three days a month over seven years, being Sydney based. They had growing concerns with mould and some building defects. A heart breaking legal battle ensued that was resolved this year. The owners dream home is now a project they have no desire to fix. No energy to repair or remedy. They just want to walk away. How much will it cost to fix the issue? I have all the reports you need. Are you a builder? Do you know a builder? Bring them with you.

BOOKS A big fan of books, architecture and photography books in particular, Shannon says they are often her souvenirs when she travels. “They have a deep meaning to me of the people I meet through them and the stories that you read.”
My favourite things SCARF
Photos Kerrie Brewer
This scarf was given to Shannon while in Palm Springs, USA last year by a complete stranger. She says it’s a reminder of a place she “adores” and “that the vast majority of people are kind, good and friendly”.
SOLERI BELL “I think it speaks to me about somebody who had a pure ideal and wanted to live by it. To find something in our life that we are passionate about and include in our day to day rather than a hobby.”
Shannon Battisson
ACT President, Australian Institute of Architects
Director of The Mill Architecture + Design, Shannon Battisson is the new ACT President of the Australian Institute of Architects. With over 14 years of experience, her projects span local Canberra projects, across Australia to Hong Kong and the USA. While born in Sydney, Shannon was “very much raised here” in Canberra and says she always knew she would settle here. The mother of two is looking forward to the challenge of juggling family life with her business and the role of ACT President of the Australian Institute of Architects alongside valuable downtime. “Both my husband and I go at a pretty hectic pace and our home is our retreat,” Shannon says. “I also take time out once or twice a year to go and immerse myself in architecture somewhere.” - Allison Turnbull
GUITAR Shannon studied at the School of Music when younger, before architecture, and is traditionally a singer. “But I started learning guitar with my children and husband. I love the idea of starting something new … and loving learning it with my children”.
CAMERA “I actually got into architecture through a love of photography. I would travel and come home from trips and mum would always lament I’d come home with buildings rather than photos of people.”
