This week... From the editor For many of us, #isolife is a whole different ballgame to our existence pre-pandemic. How are you finding it? Several local photographers are taking the opportunity to document #isolife in Canberra. Read the story on page 6. Fortunately for me, my kids are in their 20s, and have not (yet) spawned offspring of their own, so we don’t have to contend with the challenges of home schooling. Which, I’m told, has its ups and downs. Not a big bread eater, I’m not on board the sourdough #isobaking trend, but have been doing more #isocooking – experimenting with new dishes to navigate temporary shortages and use up panty staples and garden produce. An unexpected advantage of #isolife is the many hours I once spent attending events and live performances are now spent in nature, pottering in the garden, longer walks, as well as reading and watching ‘interesting’ TV programs. A number of our team are working remotely and/or reduced hours. While our magazine is smaller (including no TV guide due to less advertising), we’ve ramped up our website to include lots of additional content. In Canberra, while we’re doing an extraordinary job to contain the spread of the coronavirus, our condolences go to the loved ones of the three people who have died from COVID-19 in Canberra (as at 28 April). We cannot be complacent.

news Photographers capture snapshots of isolation

Photographer Tracy Hebden has been documenting family life during COVID-19 with her ‘Us At Home’ photo project. Photo: Tracy Hebden of www.tracyleephotography.net.

A number of local photographers are taking the opportunity to document family life amid the COVID-19 pandemic through creative family portraits. Tracy Hebden, of Tracy Lee Photography, was inspired by a Lithuanian photographer’s quarantine windows project to start her ‘Us At Home’ photo project. With her wedding and portrait work being postponed or cancelled, Ms Hebden said the project provides an opportunity to connect with the community, a purpose, and a creative outlet. “It was only just going to be in my suburb of Dunlop, but when I put it out there, I had 50 people sign up within an hour,” she said. Families as far as Murrumbateman, Queanbeyan and Gunning have expressed interest in taking part. “Upon reflection, it’s such a time of uncertainty for people,” Ms Hebden said. “It gives people an outlet to connect while physically isolating and I find it gives them something to look forward to.” Families who take part are 6

photographed through their windows, or on their driveway, with the process taking about five to 10 minutes. Ms Hebden said families are given access to a gallery to download the images for free, and there are usually one to three images per household. “The ethos of the project is for them to remember something fun.” Ms Hebden started the project about three weeks ago and has had over 100 sign-ups. While originally intended to be shortterm, she said “I’m just going to keep doing it until we’ve got freedoms again. I’m not sure when it will finish”. However, there is an end goal in mind, creating a snapshot of history. Ms Hebden has applied for an arts grant which, if successful, will be used to create a book or mount an exhibition of the photos. And she’s not alone. Documenting life during COVID-19 is becoming a trend for many photographers. Ms Hebden said “everyone is getting the idea from similar projects around the world” and thinks “it’s great” as all are doing things slightly

differently and with different styles of photography. Kelly McInnes, from Huggins Photography, is another local who has taken the opportunity to document households. She was inspired by a group of photographers in America working together to photograph families in their driveways to document this time of isolation. Like Ms Hebden, Ms McInnes said there has been significant interest in the project. She has received more than 300 enquiries and is shooting every second day in a new suburb. “People seem excited about the opportunity of being photographed and having the photograph to share with future generations of the COVID-19 that occurred in 2020 and how it

affected their family,” she said. “The short-term goal is to share an image each day with a small blurb from the family of how they are dealing or how they have been affected. We are all in this together. It is good to know that we are all facing the same challenges.” Ms McInnes said there is no upfront cost and participants receive a complimentary, low-resolution image. A highresolution image is available for $5 which has been assisting with fuel costs. To find out more or to get involved in either project, contact Ms Hebden via tlp@tracyleephotography.net or email Ms McInnes at hello@hugginsphotography.com.au - Allison Turnbull

Majura Primary School is one of nine safe and supervised sites in the ACT for students unable to study at home during Term 2. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.

Education union cautious about reopening schools As the ACT Government works towards a return to face-to-face learning for public school students, the Australian Education Union (AEU) ACT remain cautious about reopening schools en masse. AEU ACT Branch secretary Glenn Fowler said they remain concerned that “our members are physically and psychologically vulnerable

in worksites where we are not yet convinced it is possible to maintain appropriate social distancing and the highest hygiene standards”. As it stands, the AEU and the ACT Education Directorate agreed on 25 March that, until further notice, any AEU member can elect to work from home and will not be compelled to attend a worksite.

“We would need to reach agreement to divert from this shared position. The AEU’s position will be determined democratically through our Branch Executive,” Mr Fowler said. Term 2 resumed on Tuesday 28 April for public schools with remote learning, however nine schools are available as safe and supervised sites for students and families who are unable to stay at home. The Education Directorate expects about 1,900 students each day to attend a school site. Other specialist settings will continue to operate as per usual, including the Muliyan Off-Campus Flexible Learning Program, Murrumbidgee Education and Training Centre, the Cottage and the Hospital School. In a letter to members, the AEU ACT said the safe and supervised sites model will form a useful blueprint for what the reopening of schools might look like, however

noted “if we can’t get it right for 13 schools, we won’t get it right for 88”. The AEU ACT will watch to see how the NSW Government fares when it seeks to reopen 2,200 public schools from 11 May, as “it will take only one case of transmission in a school to throw that entire approach into serious question”. Meanwhile, all systemic Catholic Schools in the ACT will continue to be open for students who need to attend school throughout Term 2. Director of Catholic Education Canberra and Goulburn, Ross Fox, said until the general community situation changes, a remote learning program will be offered for all students, both those who attend school and those learning at home. Catholic Education will continue to closely monitor the available government and health advice in relation to schools. On a weekly basis, they will review the context and advise parents accordingly. - Allison Turnbull

Welcome Dr Sadia Athar

Local healthcare spotlight: From sole to soul in Kippax! We’re all aware of the critical role of doctors during the current COVID-19 pandemic, but what about other health issues that can’t wait until social distancing ends? For the health providers at Ochre’s Kippax Health Hub, it’s business as usual. The podiatrists, physiotherapists, psychologist and community services team are all still available – just with adjustments such as patient screening, temperature checks, hand sanitiser on arrival and freshly disinfected chairs! Graham McKerchar of Belconnen Community Service says it’s good to see the Ochre team proactively taking precautions. His organisation provides a range of assistance including transport and in-home services as part of the Commonwealth Home Support Program. “Many people have cancelled their transport and in home services for now,” he comments, “but we’re still here and helping as needed!” “Corns and callouses don’t stop with social distancing,” says Podiatrist Charlie Reynolds of Your Happy Feet. “We also occasionally detect major issues like DVT leg clots, which could be a concern with people not getting out and about as much.” “We are seeing increasing numbers of people with back and neck problems,” says TM Physio’s Sue McDonald. “Working from home, their setup isn’t

Ochre Medical Centre Kippax 02 6259 7216 ochrehealth.com.au

ergonomic and they’ve also lost their regular activity. Many of our patients go to the gym, but now the gyms are shut.” “I’ve been very concerned for my clients these last few weeks,” agrees Clinical Psychologist Sara Dubravs (main photo). “It’s an unsettling time for everyone – the uncertainty, not knowing when things might return to normal. That said, I’ve found clients to be relatively resilient. “My work usually involves building face-to-face relationships, but I did my first remote session last week. It flowed smoothly and worked well.”

The doctors and support team at Ochre Medical Centre Kippax are delighted to welcome a new colleague. Dr Thinus van Rensburg, Dr Riana Janse van Rensburg, Dr Kotie Ras, Dr Chinchu Ann Varghese and Dr Abraham Thomas have been joined by Dr Sadia Athar, an experienced GP with skills across many areas of family medicine.

She’s concerned about the longer term impacts of COVID-19: “We find ourselves in challenging times and don’t know how long restrictions will be in place. We don’t want to see more physical and mental problems than before. People at home can’t just forget about their health and eat their way through each day!”

“I love all parts of general practice,” says Dr Athar. “A GP must be an all-rounder because every day brings different patient needs. I started my career in adult medecine and paediatrics then completed a diploma in health counselling, all of which helps me put my feet in anybody’s shoes. Now I cover a range of areas from minor surgery and mental health to chronic disease and, of course, women’s health.

Her key recommendations? “Healthy foods and exercise - walking for 30 minutes a day is good for everybody, both for the physical movement and the change of scenery.”

“The diversity of health services in the Kippax Health Hub is wonderful because I can talk directly to the podiatrist, the physio or the counsellor. For example, many of my patients are diabetics with feet problems. If we didn’t have a podiatrist on site and I needed to refer them elsewhere, we might need to wait a month for an appointment. That doesn’t help - my patient needs treatment now! Being in the same building, I can work directly with the podiatrists and other health professionals to provide more immediate care. We can all be on the same page.”

“I am concerned by reports of increased alcohol consumption, with one in five Australians buying more. If you’re anxious and you drink more, your anxiety gets worse - it’s a vicious cycle. In some cases, that leads to worse problems like mental health issues and domestic violence.”

Coping strategies and selfcompassion are at the core of Sara’s work. “I saw a client this morning who is applying these concepts in her life. She seemed revitalised today, very happy in herself. Seeing somebody grow and learn to like themselves that’s a great experience!”

Your Happy Feet Podiatry 02 6133 9654 yourhappyfeet.com.au

“It’s OK to enjoy a drink, but keep it to a sensible level. If you’re struggling, get help – your GP is a good first port of call. They can refer you to other practitioners based on your needs.”

TM Physio’s home office tips: • Sit upright, back against the chair • A lumbar support can help • Hips slightly higher than knees • Feet flat on the floor • Screen at arm’s length • Eyeline level with the screen’s top • Keyboard close - elbows under shoulders • Mouse next to the keyboard

Sara recommends focusing on what you can control. “It can be difficult when everything seems out of control! My advice is to maintain a good routine, get outside at least once a day for some exercise, and take the time to engage with hobbies. “I prefer the term ‘physical distancing’ to ‘social distancing’. We can still reach out to friends and family - our communications tech has become so valuable and we need to use it!”

“Most of us could limit our intake of food containing saturated fat, added salt and added sugar – but it’s about balance. A sensible, balanced diet supports a healthy body and immune system. Get your two fruits and five veggies a day.”

news Child care package a burden for some centres Designed to help the early childhood education and care sector, the Federal Government’s support package has left some services feeling the pinch more than ever. For Wattle Early Childhood Centre in Lyneham, centre director Ashleigh Daly said projections for the current quarter of the financial year has them hitting a $53,000 loss, even when factoring in access to the Federal Government’s JobKeeper and child care relief packages. Originally, they were projecting a $4,000 surplus. The child care relief package was designed for the government to pay 50% of the sector’s fee revenue up to the existing hourly rate cap, in lieu of the Child Care and Additional Child Care Subsidy payments. It is a significant loss for the centre given there has been minimal changes to their attendance figures. The centre, which has 33 places, lost

10

six enrolments through withdrawals or decreased days; however, Mrs Daly said they have such an extensive waiting list that these spaces were filled immediately. The situation is such that there are concerns the centre may not survive beyond 1 July. “Families are contributing to us in some form or another, donating nappies, food, consumable items that are an expense to us that we are no longer able to afford.” As a not-for-profit, Wattle Early Childhood Centre has always had a big fundraising focus but has had to rethink their plans as they can no longer participate in Bunnings sausage sizzles or host fetes. They have been fundraising through take-home meals, while they also received a donation from a family of plants which they will also sell to raise funds.

“These programs are not going to save us but every dollar helps in these situations.” Mrs Daly said they applied for the supplementary payment from the Federal Government, however that was rejected. She hopes that when the government reviews the system, changes may be forthcoming. “It was due to be reviewed after one month. Whether there’s any change to that we don’t know. It’s been really stressful … to try and find a solution but we can’t find one unless the government steps in to help.” Mrs Daly said while they support the idea behind the Federal Government’s relief package, “it seems to us the package was designed as a one size fits all” without consideration for small, long day care providers and family day care models. “The only way we can remain

Wattle Early Childhood Centre director, Ashleigh Daly, said the Federal Government’s relief package has lost them 60% of their income and the centre may not survive beyond 1 July. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.

open is that the package has a complete overhaul and looks at the complete situation including looking at models like ours,” Mrs Daly said. She believes there should be “some sort of means testing or eligibility” for families to be able to access the free package. - Allison Turnbull

GIVIT donation of the week: Bunk bed A local charity that assists families and individuals on the journey from homelessness to living stability is in need of a bunk bed for some of their clients. A family of 10 people has recently been able to secure a home large enough for everyone to live together under the same roof. The charity is helping them source furnishings to create a comfortable and long-lasting home for the adults and children. The family needs a bunk bed, preferably with a double bed on the bottom and a single bed on top to accommodate children of different ages. Items can be dropped off to or picked up by the charity. To donate, visit givit.org.au/items-needed, search ‘bunk bed’ and select requests located in ACT. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant charity to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off. Ricotta and custard apple cheesecake Recipe and image courtesy of Custard Apples Australia | custardapple.com.au Crust 6 ginger biscuits (80g) 1 Tbsp (20g) butter, melted Filling 500g smooth ricotta 500g cream cheese 4 eggs

Comfort food

Comfort food is good for the soul. Try your hand at something new while in isolation, with these two comforting recipes sourced by our food writer, Libby Kimber.

Tonkatsu Image and text from Japanese Food Made Easy by Aya Nishimura, photography by Lisa Linder, Murdoch Books, RRP $39.99. 4 pork loin steaks, about 170g each, skin and bones removed Sea salt and ground black pepper 1/4 cup (35g) plain flour 2 eggs, lightly beaten 2 cups (120g) panko breadcrumbs 2 cups (500ml) sunflower oil, for deep-frying 400g soft white cabbage (about 1/4 small cabbage), shredded and kept in ice-cold water 1/2 cup (125ml) quick tonkatsu sauce

Quick tonkatsu sauce

Bring the pork steaks to room temperature. If you have thick steaks, make five or six incisions where the meat meets the fat on both sides. This will tenderise the pork and prevent it from curling during cooking. Season with salt and black pepper. Place the flour, beaten eggs and breadcrumbs in three separate shallow bowls. Coat the pork in the flour first and pat to remove any excess flour. Next, dip the pork into the egg. Finally, cover the pork with breadcrumbs. (You can freeze the coated pork at this stage if needed.) Heat the sunflower oil in a deep saucepan to 180°C. Cook two pork steaks for about 3 minutes, until golden brown. Use a metal strainer to remove the tonkatsu and place on paper towel to drain. Repeat with the rest of the steaks, then fry each tonkatsu again for another minute and drain on paper towel. Drain the cabbage completely. Cut the tonkatsu into thin slices. Serve with the cabbage and drizzle with the tonkatsu sauce.

2 tsp Dijon mustard

1/2 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice

4 tsp soy sauce

2 Tbsp tomato sauce

1/4 cup (45g) light brown sugar a pinch of sea salt

1/4 cup (60ml) Worcestershire sauce

1/4 cup (40g) white sesame seeds, toasted, optional

Mix the tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, soy sauce, sugar, lemon juice and salt in a bowl until well combined. If you are making this to store, don’t add the sesame seeds at this stage. Store the sauce in the fridge in a clean, screw-top jar for up to a month. Place the toasted sesame seeds in a suribachi or mortar and coarsely grind. Mix them into the sauce just before serving.

1/3 cup (75g) granulated sugar 2 tsp lime juice 1 tsp lime zest 1 tsp vanilla Pinch sea salt 1 cup custard apple flesh (approx. 1 medium custard apple) 1/4 cup (40g) plain flour Decorate 1/2 cup custard apple, extra 1 tsp lime zest 1 tsp lime juice 2 ginger biscuits, crumbled Preheat oven to 180°C. Brush a round 23cm springform tin with a bit of the melted butter. Crush or blitz the ginger biscuits to a fine meal. Scoop 2 tablespoon of crumbs into the buttered tin and spread the biscuit meal around the sides, allowing any extra to settle in the base. Combine remaining butter and biscuit crumbs in a bowl and stir until just mixed. Press the mixture into the base of the tin, then pop the pan into the refrigerator while you make the filling. In a food processor, blend ricotta and cream cheese until smooth. Add eggs, sugar, juice, zest, vanilla and salt to the processor – blend again until thick and smooth. Stir through custard apple, then fold in flour. Pour mixture into prepared pan and gently crisscross a knife through the batter to break any air bubbles. Smooth the top of the cheesecake and place tin on a baking tray. Bake cheesecake for 45 minutes, then turn the heat off, prop the door open a centimetre or so with the end of a wooden spoon, and leave the cheesecake to cool in the oven for a further 1 hour. Remove cake from oven, place on a rack and cool completely before releasing the side of the pan. Top cake with extra custard apple segments, zest and crumbled biscuit to serve.

Jeff Popple reviews five great Australian books for Mum this Mother’s Day! More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Zen Mamas by Teresa Palmer and Sarah Wright Olsen Ebury, $34.99

This inspiring and informative book makes an ideal present for those mums seeking to find a semblance of “calm, acceptance and presence among the inevitable pandemonium”. This beautifully presented book by actresses and businesswomen Teresa Palmer and Sarah Wright Olsen, is based on their internationally popular blog Your Zen Mama and provides a guide through pregnancy, childbirth and long-term parenting. Drawing on their own experiences and expert advice, they encourage mothers to find their own version of peace and balance as a parent, what they call ‘the Zen’, while also accepting the inevitable mayhem that comes with it.

Balance & other B.S. by Felicity Harley Allen & Unwin, $29.99

Inspired by the stories of friends and her own experiences, leading Australian journalist and TV personality Felicity Harley provides a warm-hearted and encouraging book about finding clarity in chaos and empowerment in the middle of a messy life. Despite the promises of feminism, many modern women are plagued by the illusion of perfectionism and feel guilty over not achieving the right balance in their lives. While seeking ‘wellness’, many women are actually suffering a decline in mental health. Aided by experts and friends, Harley gives real examples of what is going wrong and suggests what you can do to live your version of a meaningful, healthy and well life.

The Women’s Pages by Victoria Purman HQ, $32.99

Mothers who enjoy bulky historical tales of love, loss and survival will like the latest novel by Victoria Purnman. Victoria has previously explored the war experiences of women in the rural Australian Women’s Land Army and, in her new book, she turns her attention to the end of World War II. As Sydney swells with the return of Australian servicemen, Tilly and her friends must adjust to a change in their circumstances as they give up jobs and have to cope with the return of husbands badly affected by the war. A well-researched and moving novel of a very different time. 18

The Shifting Landscape by Katherine Kovacic Echo, $29.99

Also featuring a vivid rural setting is the latest Alex Clayton art mystery by Katherine Kovacic. The book opens with Alex, and her beloved Irish Wolfhound Hogarth, being invited to the historic sheep station of Kinloch in the Western District of Victoria to value the family’s art collection, which dates to the 1800s. She quickly identifies an important, historical painting, but further examination is stopped by the disappearance of the artwork and a suspicious death. As tensions increase on the farm, Alex finds her own life under threat. A well-crafted and very enjoyable crime novel that raises some important issues about Australia’s past. Recommended.

Fool Me Once by Karly Lane Allen & Unwin, $29.99

Those mums who like a good rural romance will enjoy the latest offering from the popular Karly Lane. Georgie Henderson manages a cattle property in northern New South Wales but has always dreamt of buying back the family farm of Tamban. An unlikely meeting with Michael Delacourt sets her on a whirlwind romance and, for a while, her desire to reclaim Tamban takes a backseat, until she learns Michael’s shattering secret. As she struggles to move forward, Georgie must also cope with the dramas of running a farm in very challenging times. Aided by a terrific sense of place, this is an engaging tale of rural romance.

Now streaming Paper Moon (PG) In Gorham, Kansas, during the Great Depression, itinerant con man Moses Pray (Ryan O’Neal) arrives late at the funeral of the mother of nine-year-old Addie Loggins (Tatum O’Neal). Believing him to be the young orphan’s father, the neighbours urge Moses to take Addie with him on the road to her aunt’s home in St Joseph, Missouri. Released in 1973 and shot-inblack and white at the suggestion of Orson Welles, Paper Moon is a classic. A 10-year-old Tatum O’Neal earned an Oscar for her troubles; she remains the youngest person to ever to win a competitive Academy Award. Moses and Addie are played by real-life father and daughter actors, matching wits and strength all the way through. In harsh times during the Great Depression, Moses travels the land, committing

a string of small cons to get by. With Addie’s insistence comes her assistance, challenging Moses to go just a little bit further in his cons. The movie, like our characters, chugs along with haste: a road movie thrown forward by our leads’ quick patter and speedy cons. It’s a wonder whether Moses is Addie’s real father (they share the same jaw), and if Addie could, or would, go back to a semblance of normal life once she makes it to her aunt’s home. Verdict: The movie highlights Moses’ quintessential grifter life (as parodied by The Simpsons’ monorail huckster) as shared with Addie, opposed to the cons he uses to get through it. 4.5 stars. -Luke McWilliams | themovieclub.net Paper Moon is streaming on SBS On Demand.

Oh mama!

Our favourite, stylish, celebrity mums. One of the world’s most stylish mums, Victoria Beckham was spotted in New York last October in this impeccably-tailored ensemble. The ‘Spice Girl’ turned fashion designer has four children with husband David Beckham: Brookyln, Cruz, Romeo and Harper.

A royal fashion icon, The Duchess of Cambridge turned heads in Ireland earlier this year, when she parted with her usual style and opted for a metallic green dress from cool-girl label The Vampire’s Wife. She is, of course, mum to Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Human rights lawyer and mum of twins Alexander and Ella, Amal Clooney rocks a jumpsuit like no one else can, evidenced by this navy piece she wore to a charity gala ball in Scotland last year.

Kid-friendly workouts With the new school term under way, and it looking like the kids will be home schooled for some of it, it’s a good idea to think about how to keep them healthy, focused and happy while at home. Colleen’s Lingerie and Swimwear advertising moment

Colleen’s supporting clients through uncertain times Colleen’s Lingerie and Swimwear in Garran is continuing to support their clients through these uncertain times with their online store and friendly, expert advice available for anyone who needs it. Store manager Karen Swan says while the Colleen’s online shop has always worked in partnership with the store, it is now “more important than ever” as people stay home and practise physical distancing. “Our doors are still open, but the online shopping gives women the option to browse from the comfort of home,” she says, “our entire range is online”. While the store remains open with reduced hours, Karen says they’re still available via phone or email for advice on fit and the range of products for those post-breast cancer diagnosis or surgery. “This is a time of uncertainty, but for women who have been newly diagnosed or are undergoing treatment, they might understandably be feeling a heightened sense of anxiety,” Karen says. “We’re a phone call away – whether it’s just someone to listen or questions about what they

need to be comfortable at home post-surgery. “Breast cancer diagnoses don’t stop; people still need our products and our service.” Perfect for Mother’s Day, Colleen’s has a great range of sleepwear for the cooler months ahead, including collections from brands Givoni and Amoena. They also stock a range of soft, nonunderwire bra styles, for those looking for support and comfort while working from home. “Visually, it’s loungewear as well as sleepwear. With some of the pyjamas, you could do a Zoom meeting and no one would know you’re in your jammies.” Karen says while the way they help their valued clients may have changed slightly, their priority is still to support their customers, whether online or in store. “Everybody’s experience is unique, and we’ve got the time and the space to really listen to what our customers need. “We have a saying here at Colleen’s: ‘we do love first’,” she says.

The Colleen’s Lingerie and Swimwear team are available both online and in store to provide their valued clients with support and advice.

Hot glue gun and glue sticks

DIY citrus bath bombs

Twine

Makes FIVE round 100g bath bombs. Recipe created by Biome Eco Stores. Shop ecofriendly products and DIY skin care ingredients online at www.biome.com.au

Method

Wooden flourishes

In a mortar and pestle or coffee grinder, grind the dried calendula petals down to a smooth, silky powder.

Black fine liner

Mix dry ingredients together in a glass bowl until combined.

Scissors

Slowly add the castor oil followed by the essential oils. Mix and squeeze together with your hands until it resembles damp sand.

Method

Ingredients

Divide the mixture into 5 equal portions and roll each portion into a tight ball. You may like to roll some whole calendula petals into the ball to decorate (like pictured).

3 Tbsp dried calendula petals 1 cup bi-carb soda

Let them set overnight, and air dry for another 24 hours after that.

1 cup citric acid

How to use

1/2 cup cornstarch 1/2 cup castor oil (or another light oil such as sunflower, rice or grapeseed oil) 6 drops grapefruit essential oil 6 drops orange essential oil 4 drops bergamot essential oil 4 drops lemongrass essential oil 4 drops ginger essential oil 24

Faux floristry and leaves

Run a warm bath and drop one in. It should fizz and release a beautiful uplifting aroma. Take care leaving the bath or shower as it may be slippery. Store in a sealed glass jar out of direct sunlight. It’s best to make bath bombs in small regular batches and use within a month rather than storing them long term as certain temperatures and humidity can affect their fizz quality. No bath? No worries. Biome also has a DIY recipe available online for an energising shower bomb for mental clarity.

Pencil

Decide on which box size you need/want for your gift. Cut the burlap to desired thickness and glue on the inside of box lid with the hot glue gun. This way it is easy to open the box without ruining the look of it. Choose what words you would like to put on your presents and use a pencil to lightly draw that word onto the wooden flourish. Then draw over that word with black fine liner to make it stand out. Pull apart the faux floristry and eucalyptus plants and create small little bouquets to put on top of your presents. Use a small amount of the hot glue to glue the stems together or tie together with twine. Now you can decorate your different gift boxes with combinations of all the different elements you have created.

Impeccably crafted for family living Forde 42 Quinane Avenue This impeccably-crafted family home is a cut above the rest, offering the best of both worlds in location and design. Carter + Co Agents director James Carter says the home has been “architecturally designed”, with a “spacious floor plan for perfect family living”. He says the location also makes the house a standout, in the popular

Gungahlin suburb of Forde, as well as the large amount of space on offer for family living. “The best feature is the size of the master bedroom and spacious rooms, and the kitchen is very enviable,” says Carter, “as is the quality of the finishes; being a builder’s own, this home is finished superbly”. Design features of the home include high ceilings, spotted gum

timber floors and the extensive use of glass, including highlight windows, as well as feature walls and landscaped gardens. The kitchen is a showstopper, with Carrera marble benchtops, walk-in pantry, Smeg appliances and a window splashback that overlooks the lush garden. For entertaining and outdoor dining, the home perfectly encapsulates indoor-outdoor living, with a covered alfresco area easily accessible from the family room, boasting a barbecue, sink and LED lighting. Entertaining is no problem, with two separate living areas on the lower floor and a rumpus upstairs, perfect for a kids’ or a parents’ retreat. The luxury finishes continue with the master suite, complete with walkin robe, ensuite and private balcony. All three bathrooms are finished to the highest standard, with marble vanities and feature tiles; two boast

freestanding baths. Outside, the landscaped gardens have WiFi-controlled irrigation as well as two 2,000L water tanks. Carter says this home is ideal for “a family that is looking to upsize, or a growing family”. “The home is close to the local schools and town centre, but also the access to nature on the other side.”

property news

Weekly market wrap COVID-19 and ‘timing the market’ When it comes to advising first home buyers what, when and where to buy, having unconscious incompetence can be dangerous. The person receiving the advice has little recourse and relies on the credibility of the source as part of confirming their decision to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars. Alternatively, receiving advice to delay purchasing could cost tens of thousands of dollars should the market suddenly increase. What we have learned from the impact of COVID-19 is that forecasters garner the most attention when they operate at extremes. Removing the individual choice to socialise, participate in certain recreational activities and entertainment is confronting, however the results from our shared community sacrifice has proven effective. At the time of writing (27 April), there were 106 reported cases of COVID-19 in the ACT, of which 100 people had recovered. Property market analysts forecasting large falls in property values had failed to allow for a result like this. CoreLogic’s daily dwelling value index for the combined capital cities markets showed during the 28 days to 23 April, property values had increased by 0.4%. Four of the five markets captured have the lowest levels of national housing and rental affordability. If there were to be steep falls in national property prices, these markets would be showing signs of decline first. Canberra is moving into the seasonally quieter winter market. This generally leads to lower stock volumes which have been brought forward by several months, evidenced by the 18.78% decline in the weekly volume of new listings on Allhomes from the first to last week of April. Canberra’s strong

economic fundamentals, combined with reduced supply, could end up delivering accelerated growth in values, which would deliver a shock to buyers thinking they can ‘time the market’. Transaction volume in the off-plan market shows there is a significant portion of the local population who perceive now as a good time to buy. The market is sensitive to ambitiously priced properties, which is reflective of balanced market conditions. People actively looking to buy off-plan now have positive market sentiment, as they astutely identify some property developers are seeking to increase presales, which is reflective in their pricing. There is a proportion of buyers who believe they can time their purchase and transact at what they perceive to be the bottom of the market. The Allhomes ACT Property Market Report, tracking the median property price back to 2005, illustrates buyers seeking to achieve this take on significant risk, often with little market

WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST

knowledge other than what can be gleaned from stories in the media. After each fall in the median price of multiunit dwelling values, the market increased by a far greater amount than what values had reduced by. The greatest decrease in the median price of multi-unit dwellings was $5,100 in 2015 which was followed by an increase of $10,100 in 2016. Relative consistency of Canberra’s property market shows there is negligible downside to buying as soon as you can afford to. The most important thing property owners should consider instead of trying to time the market, is to extend the duration of their time in the market as property owners.

Campbell home sells for nearly $2 million

While long weekends are typically quieter than most in the real estate world, one Canberra property has livened things up,

selling for nearly $2 million. 3/50 Jacka Crescent in Campbell went under the online hammer over the Anzac Day long weekend, with bidders battling it out, placing 19 bids for an eventual sale price of $1.96 million. The architecturally-designed property was listed by Mario Sanfrancesco and Debbie Maddigan of Blackshaw Manuka, and includes three bedrooms plus study, two bathrooms and a four-car garage. The sale comes as auctions around the country move online due to COVID-19, and the real estate industry adapts to the changing landscape.

Retro revival Cook 49 Dwyer Street Travel back in time with this iconic family residence in the North Canberra suburb of Cook. Blackshaw Belconnen principal Matt Sebbens says “the classics never die”, and predicts many a prospective buyer will “fall in love with this ‘70s masterpiece”. Situated in the heart of the Cook, Sebbens says this home is an “expansive and truly unforgettable residence sprawling across 330sqm of living and set on a large, private 920sqm block”. “This is a rare opportunity to secure a property of this calibre after almost 50 years with the original owners – a local family that have poured endless creativity and painstaking attention to detail into the home’s design and high quality finishes,” he says. With five bedrooms, multiple living areas and huge garage, Sebbens says this home is ideal for the “decisive purchasers”, whether they be large or growing families, or those with an appreciation for the home’s iconic style. “Surrounded by quality schools, [the home is] minutes to the revitalised Cook Shops and Jamison

Centre, and just a short road trip to Belconnen Town Centre or Canberra City,” he says. “With internal living spread over two levels, segregation and space for each member of the household is a reality.” “The staggering upper level is an entertaining hub,” says Sebbens. It boasts formal and casual spaces, open bar and lounge area, balcony with views to Black Mountain, large separate dining area and fifth bedroom/rumpus or home office. On the lower level are three large bedrooms, bathroom, another living area, cellar and internal access to the garage. Beautifully maintained, this home includes no shortage of unique, quirky features that pay homage to its era and the quality of construction – it even has a fireman’s pole! “Part of the original design and build, it was installed for the kids to take themselves to bed at the end of the day and remains a favourite feature for those who have inspected the property thus far,” says Sebbens.

WANT TO MAKE A MILLION DOLLARS?

For Sale $2,000,000 ONO View By Appointment Only Agent Christine Ewin 0409 719 158 Office My Agent Christine Ewin

This iconic property with two beachfront blocks, with separate titles was bank valued 6 weeks ago for $1.5 million. The residence, a cutting edge masterpiece from an award winning architect and was granted an occupancy certificate in December 2010. It cost in excess of $1.5 million to build. Standing in the living area facing North East staring down the barrel of Maloneys Beach - sand, waves crashing, jaw dropping view. Take the stairs down on to a quaint secluded beach directly in front. Each of the three bedrooms has its own ensuite. There is a glass breezeway from the master to the living space. The cost of this home is unfathomable. This is a sexy house with glamorous proportions where no expense has been spared. Whilst the owners’ only used the property three days a month over seven years, being Sydney based. They had growing concerns with mould and some building defects. A heart breaking legal battle ensued that was resolved this year. The owners dream home is now a project they have no desire to fix. No energy to repair or remedy. They just want to walk away. How much will it cost to fix the issue? I have all the reports you need. Are you a builder? Do you know a builder? Bring them with you.

in the stars ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

Your ability to put your foot in your mouth is not going to help you win friends and influence people in May. Tense discussions are underway; what counts is getting to the heart of the matter, as it looks as though someone is not being totally honest with you.

The secretive area of your chart is highlighted by Venus and your imagination is running riot. If you have an artistic job, you will certainly be doing very well. One little word of caution though, if you already have a mate, don’t be tempted by any superficial attraction.

Venus is in the area of your chart devoted to matters abroad, so if you have friends, family and acquaintances a long way off, you will be hearing from them. When it comes to a possible romance, you may very well be drawn to somebody with a foreign accent.

The areas of your chart that is devoted to daily routine and hard work is being influenced by Venus and luckily you are not the type to baulk when you are overloaded. You simply put your head down and push ahead at your own pace.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

Venus is in your 11th house, the area of your chart devoted to your friends and social life. In fact, new people you meet could introduce you to a potential lover. We know you can be charming and flirtatious, but if you already have a mate at home, be careful.

The planets are focusing on the area of your chart devoted to health matters, where you need to take extra care. Relationships with your workmates also need some consideration. You’re a hard worker, but when you become wrapped up in your ambitions, there aren’t many who can keep up with you.

Venus in Gemini means invitations for enjoyment, socialising and romance are all coming your way, sooner or later. If you already have a mate, you’ll need to be careful. If you do anything underhanded, you’re going to be found out – so bear that in mind.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

The career point of your chart is highlighted, and you’re much more confident with professional matters. It’s a great time for putting ingenious ideas to your boss because they will most definitely listen. Whatever anybody else says to the contrary, you must remember that you are impressive.

Venus will be drifting along in Gemini, your opposite number, so you’re going to have to comply with other people’s wishes and thoughts and be much more considerate than is usually the case. New people who enter your life will be anything but straightforward and honest with you.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY Happy Birthday Taurus! Venus in Gemini, the financial area of your chart, throws a happy glow over your money and income, which for some reason seems to be swelling, throughout much of May. Perhaps you have been very clever and achieved a pay rise or government assistance kicks in.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE Venus will be moving along in your sign so you look good and feel good and can hardly go wrong unless you really try. Those of you in a relationship may decide to take the next step and make a commitment or agree to a long-term plan.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR Neptune is in a challenging aspect with Venus and you may be experiencing a great deal of inner stress, so be kind to yourself; don’t overcrowd your program. If you ignore this advice, don’t be surprised if you upset some important people – the choice is entirely up to you.

Harvestcare: naturally good Harvestcare provides Canberrans with a local, natural line of hair and body care products in swappable aluminium bottles – naturally good for you and Mother Nature! Olive oil from Canberra region growers, coconut oil from Kokonut Pacific in Queanbeyan – Harvestcare tries to source local ingredients for their products whenever possible, helping other local businesses and reducing carbon emissions footprint for transportation. Both the product and the packaging are designed to be good for consumers and the environment. Once the pandemic is over, they plan to take the bottles back and sterilise them for reuse – like the milk companies used to do. More info: harvestcare.com.au

London Kills To celebrate the release of London Kills S1 (M) on DVD from 6 May, Canberra Weekly has 10 DVDs (RRP $29.55 each) to be won. London’s best detectives take on its worst crimes in this sleek British mystery series from the creator of Suspects. Veteran DI David Bradford (Hugo Speer) heads an elite murder squad, but he’s been on leave following the unexplained disappearance of his wife. In his absence, ambitious DS Vivienne Cole (Sharon Small) has been leading the investigations, and when Bradford returns to work, the two clash over their methods and lines of inquiry. The only case Bradford can’t crack is the one most personal to him – until another of their investigations uncovers evidence linked to his missing wife.

Enter to WIN To enter, email competitions@canberraweekly.com.au with ‘London Kills’ in the subject field. Tell us your name, full contact details and one of the stars of this series. Entries close 9am Friday 8 May 2020 and winners drawn same day. One entry per person. Entrants must be aged 18+.
