This week... I’m heartened by news that Australia and New Zealand are considering a travel bubble to straddle the ditch, now that both countries seem to have flattened the curve and avoided the worst-case scenarios seen elsewhere. So far. Not that I’m planning on heading there tomorrow, although returning to the land of the long white cloud appears on my bucket list. My first port of call, once domestic travel restrictions have eased, will be to hug my parents and extended family in Cairns. Then I’m hoping to take restorative, short getaways to the NSW South Coast and country towns, such as Tumut, struggling to recover from drought and bushfires. Last weekend, I was fortunate to be invited to experience Monster Kitchen and Bar’s new Restaurant In Room initiative while staying overnight at Ovolo Nishi. Monster’s charming host, Mars, explained the menu and served the three courses plus appetisers, at the in-room table, perfectly timed about 30-40 minutes apart and physically distanced at least 1.5m from guests. An isolation staycation is as good as a holiday, as the saying goes. It’s a shining example of how local organisations are innovating their business models to keep employees in work, live long and prosper. As restrictions are easing, please turn to local businesses in our community when you’re spending your hard-earned cash. It equals jobs right here. Take care, - Julie Samaras

Hand sanitiser made by Underground Spirits can be purchased via a ‘drive-through’ sanitisation station at the Canberra Region Visitors Centre, which has repurposed their team and centre to support the project on behalf of the ACT Government. Photo: Denholm Samaras.
Distilleries turn their hands to sanitiser As hand sanitiser supplies dwindled worldwide, local distilleries transitioned their businesses to create product for frontline medical staff – and now it’s readily available to the general public. This includes Underground Spirits who, on Tuesday 5 May, announced a new business arm - AUS, made by Australian Underground Spirits – offering hand and home sanitising products for the public. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Underground Spirits has made tens of thousands of litres of hand sanitiser for use by
frontline medical staff in the ACT. According to owner and head distiller, Dr Toby Angstmann, they have been overwhelmed with requests for hand sanitiser from the public that, until now, they have been unable to facilitate. “Our new system sits under a new extension to our business – made by AUS. This system is wholly Australian made and follows the Department of Health guidance for appropriate cleaning in these current times,” Dr Angstmann said. The three new products are: mediSPRY - a hand sanitiser that is
effective against viruses, bacteria and fungi, available in a one-litre bottle; mediVIRTUE – a 70% denatured alcohol surface solution available in a 500ml bottle; and mediMOXIE – a chlorine-based home cleaning solution. Bottles of mediSPRY are available via ‘call and collect’ at the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre on weekdays; the Capital Region Farmers Market on Saturday mornings; or online at undergroundspirits.com.au Unicorn Spirits is another local distillery that has turned their hand to manufacturing and supplying hand sanitiser to the public. Founder and CEO of Unicorn Spirits, Ben Osborne, said they decided to transition to making hand sanitiser when major events around Australia were being cancelled. “We were all set for our biggest year yet and had booked into many large markets. As markets are our main source of income, to have all of them cancelled was a huge hit. I had already produced all the stock and now only had my website to sell it on.” He said the Therapeutic Goods Administration in late March gave distilleries the opportunity to manufacture hand sanitiser under strict guidelines. “This was a massive opportunity to keep me and my workers busy and help our local community. The
first production saw 1,000L of our vodka (ethanol) put towards helping frontline medical staff in Canberra hospitals and medical clinics.” The company is still producing 700ml medical grade 80% ethanol refill bottles of hand sanitiser (available via unicornspirits.com. au/shop for express delivery) and is hoping to have pump bottle options available soon. The Canberra Distillery has also been hard at work turning wine, sourced from local wineries, into ethanol, which is used as a base ingredient in hand sanitiser. Owner Tim Reardon said they switched from making gin to ethanol due to the enormous demand for hand sanitiser at the start of COVID-19 in Australia. They can make 150 to 200 litres of ethanol a day. Mr Reardon said the spike was the result of false demand, not unlike what happened with toilet paper, where customers were not only placing their normal order but extra to stockpile. However, he said it returned to equilibrium over the Easter long weekend. Now, he said they are “working on doing a proper hand sanitiser, not just the ethanol side of things” as well as building up supply of some other products. - Allison Turnbull
Funding advance incentive for school to return The Federal Government has offered a funding advance for religious and independent schools having cashflow problems due to COVID-19 on the proviso of a return to classroombased learning. A federal Department of Education Skills and Employment spokesperson said that on 28 April, Minister for Education Dan Tehan sent a letter to Independent Schools Council of Australia and National Catholic Education Commission offering non-government schools the option to apply for early payments of their July 2020 recurrent funding to bring payments forward to May and June. 8
canberraweekly.com.au
“If all private schools qualified in all states and territories, the Morrison Government would have to bring forward a July payment of $3 billion,” the spokesperson said. “$1.6 billion of this will be allocated to Catholic schools, $1.4 billion to Independent schools. This funding will be allocated to schools according to the normal funding formulae.” They said to be eligible for the first payment (12.5% of their annual funding), non-government approved authorities must comply with the condition of approval imposed on 9 April 2020 to be open for physical campus learning in term 2 and to have a plan to fully re-open classroom
teaching by 1 June 2020. “To be eligible for the second payment (a further 12.5% of their annual funding), the approved authority will need to commit to achieving 50% of their students attending classroom-based learning by 1 June 2020.” It is not compulsory for schools to take up the federal government’s offer. “If schools decide not to participate, they will get their normal payment in July,” the spokesperson said. In a statement, Catholic Education Canberra and Goulburn said they are working closely with NSW and ACT government and health authorities to
determine the best plan to return to face-to-face teaching and learning “as soon as it is safe to do so”. These plans will be under constant review based on the most up-to-date health advice. “The priority in our plan to transition back to ‘normal’ schooling is the learning of students, together with the safety and wellbeing of our staff and students, and the needs of our school families.” All Catholic schools in the ACT remain open to students who need to attend school. In week one of term 2, around 1,300 students attended a Catholic systemic school on any given school day. - Allison Turnbull

news On the job with Canberra’s Contact Tracing team The ACT achieved a pretty significant milestone at the end of April in becoming the first Australian jurisdiction to record zero active cases of COVID-19. While there’s now currently one active case, the curve has been flattened on the back of hard work and sacrifice by all of us, but none more so than those working on the frontline. We’ve heard about the work ACT Health’s Contact Tracing Team have done since March in aiding the fight against COVID-19. It’s been a frantic, time-consuming, stressful, yet rewarding and uplifting time for them. Canberra Weekly recently spoke with ACT Contact Tracing team members Mary Brunton, Tim Sloan-Gardner, Tracey Boyce, Algreg Gomez and Maria Manton about what their fascinating line of work entails. With the ACT recording only one new case of COVID-19 in the past 11 days (as at 5 May), the workload for our contact tracers has dropped off, however Ms Boyce said it was “absolutely crazy” back in late March. “I could work anything between eight hours

up to 14-15 hours in the day. Every day was hard to predict as often something would occur just before you were heading home,” she said. Ms Brunton, Mr Sloan-Gardner, Ms Boyce, Mr Gomez and Ms Manton all came into the job as either health professionals or post-graduate students in health, without any direct experience working in contact tracing. “As a health professional, a lot of the work you do is investigative,” Ms Manton said. “Working with people to determine causes and contributing factors for health issues and using skills and training to help them arrive at solutions.” The aspect of the job she’s found most surprising is just how connected she’s grown to be with some of the many people she’s had to communicate with. “Making daily phone calls to people and helping them through the range of emotions that goes with a diagnosis, you develop a relationship with them.” While investigating each case plays out differently, one thing that always remains constant is an exhaustive, meticulous line of questioning.
“We have a standard set of questions that we use, more as a prompt, but depending on the answers, we will ask additional questions to gain as much information as possible. We may also need to ring people back with further questions,” Mr Sloan-Gardner said. Despite many aspects of contact tracing proving to be uplifting, given the nature of their work there are guaranteed to be some tough times too. “The role is very rewarding and fortunately the hard parts are few and far between,” Ms Brunton said. “But it is very hard when someone dies or their condition deteriorates because we get to know many of the people quite well when we call them every day.” With the Australian Government’s COVIDSafe app now having had over 4 million downloads nationally, ACT Health said they believe the data from the app will “complement the existing contact tracing that has proved to be so successful in the ACT in helping stop the spread of COVID-19”. - Denholm Samaras

news Aussies eager for early super access Australians wanting early access to superannuation due to financial hardship caused by COVID-19 have lodged more than 760,000 applications, worth over $6 billion in total, with the Australian Taxation Office. The decision to allow temporary early access to superannuation was part of the Federal Government’s second stage of its COVID-19 economic support package announced on 22 March. Under the plan, eligible individuals can access up to $10,000 of their superannuation in the 2019-20 financial year and a further $10,000 in 2020-21. An ATO spokesperson said applications for early release of superannuation for people financially affected by COVID-19 opened on 20 April 2020. “As announced by Treasury Deputy Secretary, Jenny Wilkinson at the Senate Select Committee on COVID-19 on 28 April 2020, we have received 762,000 applications for early release of superannuation, with 757,000 of these applications approved by the ATO. The total amount that has been approved for release is $6.3 billion.” The Association of Superannuation Funds of
Australia estimates that the average withdrawal is around $8,200. This is less than the maximum amount of $10,000 as a substantial number of applicants have less than $10,000 in their superannuation account (or are withdrawing from more than one superannuation account). Some applicants also are withdrawing only what they need rather than the maximum amount. However, Super Consumers Australia (SCA), Council On The Ageing (COTA) Australia and CHOICE are urging people to exhaust all other options before dipping into their super. “There are a number of financial assistance options to help people through these tough times. Super will be the right option for some, but you should be looking at what else is available and possible cuts to discretionary spending before raiding the cookie jar,” SCA director Xavier O’Halloran said. SCA modelling found that, for a 30-year-old, the impact of withdrawing $20,000 would be $49,823 by retirement age. “Taking out money before retirement means losing the benefit of compound interest over a lifetime. Depending on how old you are, withdrawing money now could see you having to
work much longer to make up the difference before you retire,” Mr O’Halloran said.
Be wary of superannuation scams Meanwhile, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is warning Australians to avoid superannuation scams. An ACCC spokesperson said since the Federal Government’s early-release announcement on 22 March, to 30 April, Scamwatch has received over 400 reports of superannuation scams relating to COVID-19, with over $12,000 in reported losses. ACCC deputy chair Delia Rickard warned that scammers are cold calling people claiming to be from organisations that can help people get early access to their super. “The ATO is coordinating the early release of super through myGov and there is no need to involve a third party or pay a fee to get access under this scheme,” Ms Rickard said. “Never follow a hyperlink to reach the myGov website. Instead, you should always type the full name of the website into your browser yourself.” More information about coronavirus scams is available on the Scamwatch website. - Allison Turnbull

news Meal service provides food relief Shopping limitations and the sight of empty supermarket shelves recently prompted Havelock Housing Association (HHA) to team up with the Canberra Racing Club (CRC) to provide a readyto-eat meal service. HHA CEO Andrew Rowe said while the service was started to help their residents, it is broadly designed to ease the demand for food relief as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. He said over a month ago when the impacts of the pandemic and isolation/quarantine requirements became clearer, it was important to think about how HHA could prepare as an organisation and help their residents prepare. Mr Rowe said while “we haven’t had anyone in lockdown or quarantine in our community”, they are familiarising residents with the offering in case they need to access it. HHA supports over 400 community housing residents in 180 properties across Canberra, including Havelock House which houses around 100 residents, some of whom live with high and complex needs including disability, physical and mental health issues.
Mr Rowe said their main focus was on those in Havelock House as they had heard stories of residents, many of whom don’t have access to transport (or stockpile goods), having to walk to various supermarkets to buy things to cook and eat. CRC Chief Operating Officer Amy Squires said the decision to join forces with HHA is an extension of their existing relationship, through which the club donates food left over from race days to Havelock House. The new meal service now means CRC has been able to keep some of their kitchen staff employed. “It is working really well and it’s growing, which shows there’s a dire need,” Ms Squires said, adding it has potential to become a longterm offering. “We are going to keep doing it for as long as we can, as long as we can help people.” The menu includes halal and vegetarian options, with prices starting from $7.70 per meal, while HHA subsides the cost for those in Havelock House. So far, more than 350 meals have been provided to residents as well as to the wider Canberra community.
Havelock Housing Association (HHA) has joined forces with the Canberra Racing Club (CRC) to provide a subsidised ready-to-eat meal service. Pictured: Amy Squires, Chief Operating Officer CRC, and Andrew Rowe, HHA CEO. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
“The main reason for including the broader community is we need to make it sustainable,” Mr Rowe said. The initiative has also received support from other community organisations with both Barnardos Canberra and Hepatitis ACT signing up for regular meal deliveries. Last week, we saw the number of active cases of COVID-19 in the ACT drop to zero. It’s thanks to the diligence of everyone in our community to be socially distant and stay home, as well as the hard work of our doctors and nurses, that we can now see a way out of this crisis. The National Cabinet, led by the Prime Minister, has shown great leadership to get us to this point. They have listened to the expert medical advice and we are now in a position where new cases are low and the health system is not overwhelmed. But as we’re starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel, it’s becoming clear that some of our leaders are moving away from listening to the evidence. We are seeing this most prominently on the question of when to reopen schools. The advice from the independent Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) and the Chief Medical Officer on schools has been consistent since day one of this crisis. When it comes to COVID-19, children are a very low risk of either getting infected or spreading the virus. On that basis, the advice has always been that schools should remain open, especially for the parents who cannot keep their kids at home due to work. Schools remaining open is critical because education is too important for a child’s future for them to lose a full term or more of
in-classroom learning. Too many health and essential workers will get pulled from the frontlines if their kids aren’t in school, because they have no one else to look after and teach their kids. Indeed, when it comes to the economic recovery we need, the PM has repeatedly made clear that every job is an essential job, and every worker is an essential worker. Getting jobs and businesses started up again will be made that much harder when many parents are forced to do at-home schooling. Not only that, Canberrans want schools to be open. I sought out the thoughts of Canberrans during the last week on this issue. Of the 2,492 people who responded, 55% had school-aged children and 64.3% of those said they would send their kids to back to school if they could; 75% wanted schools either fully open immediately or for a transition of one or two days a week to begin now. But it appears Andrew Barr and the ACT Labor Government are more interested in keeping the unions happy than doing what is right for students and parents. I understand teachers work hard and often sacrifice much for our kids. But the evidence has been clear and consistent and, with sensible safeguards, the risk is low. The evidence is clear. The views of Canberrans are clear. The Barr Labor Government needs to reopen schools now. - Senator Zed Seselja

CSCC helps those in need The Canberra Southern Cross Club has launched a ‘Job Saver’ program to support its staff on international visas who are ineligible for JobKeeper assistance. By doing so, the club has been able to increase its support of the Vinnies Night Patrol, now providing over 500 meals per week to the service. The Club has supported the Night Patrol for over 20 years. The provision of additional meals from the Club’s Woden kitchen started from Monday 20 April and will continue until further notice.
A local organisation supporting individuals living with intellectual disability is in need of exercise equipment for their clients. The service is set up with group home facilities so equipment can be shared with multiple clients who are living under the same roof. They are looking for anything such as a treadmill, exercise bike, rowing machine, hand weights or other fitness tools. Typically the organisation would support outings and social fitness; however, due to the COVID-19 restrictions, their clients have been mostly indoors. Any good quality, pre-loved equipment you can donate will make a huge difference to the lives of those who are trying to remain happy and healthy during these tumultuous times. Items can be dropped off or picked up by the charity. To donate, visit givit.org.au/items-needed, search ‘exercise equipment’ and select requests located in ACT. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant charity to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off.

Serves: 10-12
Finely chop chocolate and place in a heatproof bowl. Set aside.

Combine the cream, milk, vanilla seeds and vanilla pod in a saucepan. Cook over medium–low heat until just below boiling point. Remove from the heat. Pour just one ladleful of the liquid into the egg mixture, mix well and then add the rest of the milk. Mix completely to dissolve the sugar. Rinse the saucepan and pour the egg and milk mixture back into the pan. Cook over medium–low heat, stirring constantly, until the custard is thick enough to coat the back of a spoon. Remove the vanilla pod and scrape the custard into a bowl. Sift the matcha powder over the custard and carefully stir to remove all of the lumps. Cover with plastic wrap until cooled. Pour the cooled custard into an ice-cream maker and churn according to the machine’s instructions. Alternatively, pour the custard into a container to freeze for 2–3 hours. Whisk the custard, then return to the freezer and repeat this process for the next 2–3 hours, until frozen. To serve, scoop about 90g of the ice cream and sandwich it between two digestive biscuits. You can freeze the sandwiches again to serve later if you wish.

Pour the vegetable oil (4cm high) into a medium size saucepan with deep sides. Place on medium-high heat and bring it up to frying point (185°C). In a mixing bowl combine the plain flour, sugar and cinnamon and stir to combine. Then add the milk, lightly beaten egg and the vanilla essence. Using a whisk, whisk until well combined and no lumps appear. Add the apple slices to the batter to coat. While the oil is heating up, prepare your cinnamon sugar by simply mixing both ingredients together. Set aside on a large plate. Test if the oil is hot enough by adding in a tiny spoon of batter, it should sizzle and little bubbles should form around the batter edges. If not, allow it to heat up further. Pick up an apple slice and allow any excess batter to drip off before placing it in the oil. Use a slotted spoon to gently turn the apple slice over once the batter coating has developed a light golden brown colour and cook the other side (2-3 minutes each side). Drain off any excess oil and place on paper towel. Repeat the process in batches of 5-6 slices at a time to prevent the slices sticking to each other. Toss the cooked apple fries in the cinnamon sugar to coat all sides. For the caramel sauce, combine the lemon juice and the cornflour in a small saucepan. Stir until well combined and any lumps are removed. Then stir in the remainder of the ingredients. Allow to simmer on medium heat, stirring constantly until the sauce starts to thicken. Keep stirring to prevent lumps forming. Once the caramel sauce is thickened and the taste of the cornflour has disappeared, take it off the heat. Enjoy your apple fries with a side of the sauce.

Seven Lies by Elizabeth Kay
Hammer to Fall by John Lawton
Sphere, $32.99
Grove Press, $29.99
Elizabeth Kay’s debut suspense thriller is cleverly framed around seven lies told by Jane, the book’s very unreliable narrator. Jane and Marnie have been inseparable since they first met at school when they were 11 and they have maintained that bond into their twenties. Jane, however, dislikes Marnie’s husband, Charles, which leads to her first lie. And if not for that first lie, “Charles would almost certainly still be alive”. Written as if Jane is telling the story directly to the reader, this intimate examination of an obsessive relationship holds attention, even though it does not deliver many surprises.
A notch above the other two books, Hammer To Fall is a subtle and well-written spy thriller that seamlessly moves between Berlin in 1948 and Finland and Prague in 1966. This is the third of Lawton’s novels to feature roguish MI6 spy Joe Wilderness and once more finds him in trouble as he tries to mix financial gain with spying on the Russians. The historical periods are well evoked, and the intricate plot unfolds with clockwork precision as the story moves to a tense and unexpected climax at a border crossing between East and West Berlin. A superb piece of spy fiction.
Now streaming Hostage (M) In the 1970s in Wollongong NSW, 16-year-old Christine Maresch (Kerry Mack) works with her friends at a carnival. Soon, one of the workers, German immigrant Walter, (Ralph Schicha) gets besotted with the free-spirited teen, and abruptly proposes to her! Back in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, the Australian Government offered wannabe producers huge tax breaks on funding Australian movies amid the new R rating. This abruptly created the ‘Ozploitation’ genre: low budget movies filled with action, nudity, gore and which proudly featured the Australian landscape. Hostage, based on the shocking true story of Christine Maresch who endured an abusive relationship with her neo-Nazi, bank-robbing husband, takes on these Ozploitation tropes. On one hand, it’s a true crime story delving into the facts of the matter, while simultaneously ramping up the
Extraction (MA 15+) ‘schlocky’ Ozploitation check-list items including the movie’s various posters, VHS covers and even alternative title, Savage Attraction. The movie is therefore an uneven experience; a shallow adaptation of Christine Maresch’s experiences as noted in her novel, and a ‘grindhouse’ experience not as extreme as its peers. Its acting and accents are as expected for the era, but the look of 1970s NSW in celluloid film, enhanced to 4k, is gorgeous. Verdict: While obviously an inspiration for 1989’s Dead Calm in terms of theme and even key scenes, it is otherwise hard to see why the movie was considered a classic worthy of a 4k rerelease. 2 stars. - Luke McWilliams | themovieclub.net Hostage is now available as an extended director’s cut released on Blu-Ray and DVD and is streaming on Google Play, Fetch TV and Umbrella Entertainment as a 4k restoration.
Extraction is not a film for everyone. Are you after a storyline? Not for you. Do you get upset at the sight and sound of extreme violence? You might want to give this a miss. However, if you love action films, are a fan of shoot ‘em up video games, or even just Chris Hemsworth (raises hand) you are in for one heck of a ride. Based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, and Joe and Anthony Russo, Extraction is a new addition to Netflix’s film line-up and features Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rake, a mercenary with nothing to lose, who is hired to rescue a drug lord’s kidnapped son. And that’s about all the information divulged, which contributes to the film’s weak point – the purpose and motivation behind the kidnapping that starts the whole shebang. What works in the film’s favour, however, is the charismatic performance of Hemsworth (Aussie accent and all) who is on screen for

majority of the runtime, and generally kicks ass. There is a little bit of background provided as to why Rake is the way he is, however this film is not about character development but fastpaced action, a highlight of which is an almost 12 minute, single-take sequence. Despite almost two hours’ runtime, Extraction is relatively wellpaced. While there’s the occasional breather from the non-stop action, these sequences are often the film’s weaker elements. Verdict: An action-packed, and brutal ride – good luck keeping track of the body count! Extraction is definite escapism, although not necessarily a film you will watch on repeat. 2.5 stars. - Allison Turnbull Extraction is now streaming on Netflix.

What do you do when an unforeseen pandemic means you find yourself at home with a bit of extra time on your hands? Judging by the empty shelves of flour in Canberra supermarkets, it appears our collective response is to bake. It makes sense, bread is probably the ultimate comfort food, so naturally in a time of crisis and uncertainty we seek comfort in the magic of turning flour, water and leaven into a warm, crusty and aromatic loaf. When it comes to home bread baking, maximum kudos is reserved for those who spurn commercial yeast and embrace the ancient art of sourdough baking.
going to bake your own sourdough, it’s also advisable to try an organic bread flour as non-organic grains have been sprayed with pesticides and herbicides and irradiated for long-term storage. White four has also had the wheat germ and bran removed and been bleached so try whole grain flours or unbleached varieties.
Why sourdough? Most bread is made with modern commercial baker’s yeast, a single bacteria species isolated from the skin of grapes and originally used to brew beer. The advent of modern yeast enabled bakers to simplify and speed up the process of bread production. In contrast, sourdough ‘starter’ contains a broad range of lactobacillus bacteria and wild yeast species that not only make the bread rise but make the grain more easily digestible and the nutrients more available.
The traditional way to make sourdough starter is to add flour to water and wait for it to ferment (you’ll see bubbles), however the results can be mixed. If you’re wanting to get off to the best start, try sourcing a quality culture such as one from Canberra sourdough gurus Lissa and Mark Gavins, the proud owners of a 120-year-old ancient sourdough culture. They also run sourdough workshops, normally in person but now online; for more info visit healthkultcha.com.au
Gluten intolerance? What’s fascinating is that some people who normally have problems digesting gluten find they can eat traditionally made sourdough bread without a problem as the grain is fermented before baking. If you’re
Once you turn out that first loaf, imbibe it’s heartening aroma, upload your mandatory photo onto social media for all to admire, just sit back and all let all the stress of the last few weeks melt away. Such is the healing power of being a baker.

A jacket is not only super cute, it’s super practical – especially if you have thin, older or short-haired breeds. Wriggley Diggley original sherpa snug from $49.99, PETstock.
The purr-fect pet guide With many pet parents working from home, fur babies are likely to be spending more time indoors. While pets can be a source of comfort, it’s important to take care of their mental and physical health too. WITH HOME EDITOR, ALLISON TURNBULL
Whether they’re furry or scaly, it’s important to keep pets healthy and stimulated to maintain their overall wellbeing during lock-ins. PetSafe Australia shares their tips to care for pets during lockdown to keep them healthy and happy while taking advantage of spending more time together.
Get inventive with indoor exercise: In homes with stairs, you could encourage your pet (provided they are in good health) to go up and down a few times, or you could consider setting up an indoor obstacle course. Set aside playtime: No matter the size of your home, find a space where you can play with your pet to help keep them mentally and physically stimulated. Try to do this for at least half an hour morning and night. Stick to mealtimes: To give them a sense of normality, stick as closely as you can to regular mealtime routines - and don’t increase their portion size. 26

Winter care Despite many of our pets having fur coats, they can still suffer from frostbite, exposure and dehydration in the winter months. To help your pets get through the colder weather, the RSPCA ACT has put together these helpful tips: • Keep your animals inside as much as possible, especially during the coldest parts of the day.
Staying paw-sitive in isolation
Go for walks … but don’t overwalk: Getting out to exercise with your dog is a good way to avoid cabin fever and have some much-needed fresh air. However, make sure you don’t overwalk them by getting every family member to take them on individual walks out or they could get overtired.
Looking for some added inspiration to take your pooch for a walk? Why not take part in Million Paws Walk: Walk This May and support the vital work of the RSPCA ACT; www.millionpawswalk.com.au. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
• Make sure to dry your pet when they come in from outside. You wouldn’t want to sit in a wet coat and neither does your furry friend!
Luxe dog bed $399 Early Settler
Limit treats: Keep treats to a minimum as it can instil bad habits and could increase the risk of pet weight gain, especially with limited exercise opportunities. Invest in innovative pet toys: Got an all-important conference call coming up and no way to keep your pet occupied? There are a variety of automatic indoor and outdoor electronic toys that can entertain your pet while giving you the chance to work in peace. Prepare for life after lockdown: While it’s great to spend extra time with our pets, try not to be with them all the time. Go to another room, even if it’s just for a short period. To avoid separation anxiety after lockdown, pets need to get used to us not being there.
• If your pet is unable to stay inside, make sure they have access to winter-proof shelter. Ensure it is raised off the ground to keep it from getting wet and frosty, and place it in a location where it’s most likely to get maximum sun exposure. • Cats are notorious for finding toasty warm spots around the house. Be wary of your pet sitting too close to heaters or fires as they can fall asleep and end up with dry skin or burns. • Grab your pet a jacket. Make sure it is the right fit and avoid having the jacket too tight. It’s extremely important to take the jacket off once they are back in a heated environment as it can irritate the animal and cause injury. • Check your pet has fresh water in the morning. Make sure the water hasn’t frozen over during the night, and provide new water to drink during the day.

Autumn is for compost Composting is the process of decomposing household and garden ‘waste’ into nutrient-rich soil improver, using minimal output (that is, human labour), for maximum gain (enviously abundant, healthy plant life). Anyone can create compost and on any scale; your composting system can be as elaborate or as simplistic as you like. With 3-9 May marking International Compost Awareness Week in Australia, here are some tips to start your composting journey. How you compost will largely depend on time and space, what style of garden you have, and whether you need to consider children or pets. Purpose-made bins can be readily purchased in a variety of shapes, sizes and styles – you can also use a compact Bokashi system if you live in an apartment or don’t have many scraps. Alternatively, you can make your own compost bin using pallets, chicken netting, non-treated recycled timber, bricks, plastic garbage bins with the bottoms cut out, bales of straw, or simply freestanding and out in the open. You can even bury your compost and let nature do the work for you.
Compost can be made aerobically or anaerobically, i.e. with or without air. Aerobic composting relies on volume (one cubic metre is optimum), the right mix of carbon and nitrogen-rich ingredients, and regular turning to generate heat – the pile needs to reach 55oC, and no more, at least three times during the composting process. Anaerobic composting, on the other hand, still requires a complementary mix of carbon and nitrogen ingredients but without the regular turning or continually high heat. This method of composting is less labour intensive and a slower process; depending on conditions, it could take 5-12 months to have a garden-ready product, as opposed to the aerobic method, which can be ready in as little as three weeks (check out Berkeley method www.permaculturenews.org/2015/09/15/ some-tips-on-making-compost/). Anything which was once living and hasn’t had an excess of sodium or oil added to it can be composted. Avoid using dairy and meat products if you are composting using the cold method, have pets, or if you are still to master the hot method (unhealthy compost attracts
WITH HORTICULTURIST TRACEY BOOL traceyboolgardenwriter.com
vermin and causes odours). As a guide, layer approximately 25 parts carbon (such as deciduous leaves, shredded paper with black ink only, hair, straw, untreated sawdust) to one part nitrogen (kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, green waste from the garden) until the bin is full. Cutting ingredients into smaller pieces significantly speeds up the process. Keep the pile moist and protected from weather. To increase the amount of compost produced, consider collecting coffee grounds from your local café, deciduous leaves from roadsides, shredded paper from work, and veggie scraps also from workplaces and non-gardening neighbours – adhering to self-isolation protocols, of course! If your compost smells revolting and is too wet, add more carbon ingredients, a sprinkle of Dolomite or garden lime (optional), and give it a good turn. If it is dry and lifeless, add more nitrogen ingredients, add moisture, and give it a good turn.

property news
Weekly market wrap Canberra property values hold their own during April In the context of rapidly weakening economic conditions and the broader COVID-19 related disruption, the April housing market result looks remarkably resilient. Property values in Canberra were flat for the month, demonstrating resilience to adverse market conditions created by COVID-19. CoreLogic head of research, Tim Lawless, said “although housing values were generally slightly positive over the month, the trend has clearly weakened since mid-to-late March, when social distancing policies were implemented and consumer sentiment started to plummet”. “The Australian version of this global health and economic crisis is only a month-and-a-half old, and it looks inevitable that there will be some downwards pressure on housing values over the coming months. The magnitude of housing value falls depends on a broad range of factors with most hinging on the timing and extent of social distancing policies being lifted,” Lawless said. “The good news is that Australia has managed to flatten the spread of the virus more effectively and efficiently than expected and we are already seeing a subtle easing of social distancing policies in some states. An early return of economic activity should
support a lift in consumer spirits, which in turn should see housing market activity sparking back to life.” Plenty of downside risk remains for housing values; however, there are a variety of factors that will help to insulate home values from a material downturn. A key factor is the leniency provided to distressed borrowers affected by COVID-19 by Australian banks. Eligible borrowers can take advantage of payment holidays over a six-month window, by which time the economy will hopefully be in better shape. This policy is central to limiting the flow of distressed properties onto the market, which could have otherwise been a source of more significant downward pressure on home values. Lawless noted that the high rate of unemployment is likely to be most impactful on areas of the workforce that have lower rates of home ownership. The potential for stronger labour market conditions amongst workers who have a higher rate of home ownership is another factor that should help to keep the number of distressed properties to a minimum. There is also the unprecedented level of stimulus to consider, which will help to keep
Architects call for ‘targeted stimulus’ The Australian Institute of Architects has called on Australia’s governments to implement targeted stimulus measures to aid in fast-tracking economic recovery from the COVID-19 crisis. “The construction industry directly employs nearly one in 10 Australians,” said the Institute’s national president, Helen Lochhead. “This creates an opportunity for our sector
to do much of the heavy lifting when it comes to the economic recovery from COVID-19, provided governments pull the stimulus levers available to them.” Professor Lochhead said stimulus efforts that focus on projects and programs of “a variety of scales and locations” are essential, as well as fasttracking existing major infrastructure projects.

businesses afloat and workers in a paying job. A sharp reduction in advertised supply levels is another factor helping to safeguard home values amidst a fall in buyer demand. “No doubt the coming month will provide more clarity about the direction of housing markets,” Lawless concluded on the April market results. “One of the most important indicators to follow will be measures of consumer sentiment. If consumer spirits start to bounce back to more normal levels, this is when we should start to see housing activity lift from their current low levels.”
Your property questions answered Do you have a question about Canberra’s property market you would like answered? Next Saturday 16 May at 9.45am, Sam will be hosting a Facebook Live for Canberra Weekly to answer your property questions. “There should also be a focus on urgently rolling out a broad range of projects such as social and affordable housing, community facilities and public spaces, energy efficiency upgrades and, most importantly, projects in the fire-ravaged regional communities of Australia, geared around the principles of building back better,” she said.

Peace and privacy Holder 6 Ligar Place This suburban gem ticks all the boxes for family-friendly life. Nestled amongst established gardens in the Weston Creek suburb of Holder, 6 Ligar Place boasts four bedrooms, all with built-in robes, including the segregated master with ensuite, as well as separate living areas. Director and licensed agent from Luton Weston Creek and Molonglo Valley, Justine Burke, says due to the location, the size of the home and the layout, this home would ideally suit a young family. “However, the style of the home and the gardens may also appeal to empty nesters or downsizers,” she says. “The contemporary style of this Willemsen built home is very
appealing and the established gardens that surround the home offer a wonderful outlook from each and every window and also excellent privacy.” The light-filled living and dining area boast full-length windows, while the family and meals area includes a gas fireplace for those cold Canberra winters. The original kitchen includes a five-burner gas stove. The home’s many windows allow the lush, mature gardens to be appreciated from both inside and out, with multiple, private outdoor entertaining spaces to enjoy. Other features include an updated main bathroom and separate toilet, gas wall heaters and reverse-cycle split system and double garage. This home sits in an enviable cul-de-sac position, which allows it an abundance of peace and privacy, while also being close to a range of amenities. “It’s a super family-friendly location with a park at the end of the street, Cooleman Court within walking distance without crossing a road, and St Jude’s Primary and Canberra Montessori School are also within walking distance,” Burke says.
We get Canberra.
