Is it just me, or have you noticed many more folk, particularly families, out walking, cycling, riding scooters in your neighbourhood lately? Clearly, it’s not just me, as the ACT Government has been installing ‘slow down’ corflute signs in select suburbs to help make our streets safer (read the story on page 8). I’m taking extra care since young children took to cycling almost daily in our cul-de-sac. If there are any upsides to the virus crisis, more active neighbourhoods is one. On recent walks in my suburb, the breathtaking beauty Mother Nature puts on display has halted me in my tracks several times. A showstopping cluster of fist-sized mustard-yellow fungi fighting for space at the base of a giant gum. The setting sun momentarily transforming a little grey cloud into a glowing rose-gold vision against the fading blue sky. A band of lilac haze on the horizon as the sky at dusk transitions through shades of cerulean until the colours seep away into darkness. A pair of magpies zipping and darting overhead like fighter jets in pursuit of a lone currawong. Red grevillea flowers vibrant against an azure sky. Bliss. Things to be grateful for this past week include the beauty of nature on our doorsteps and the devotion and fortitude of my nieces and parents tending to my seriously ill brother in Queensland. Take care.

Major upgrades for the Monaro Highway are a step closer following the release of concept designs, which include a southbound flyover at the intersection with Lanyon Drive. On-road cycle lanes will also be built as part of the new flyover. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
Major upgrades a step closer for Monaro Highway Concept designs for upgrades along the Monaro Highway were released on Tuesday 19 May with a southbound flyover at the intersection with Lanyon Drive a key feature. Improvements to the highway were flagged in March 2019 – to improve safety and travel times – with the $200 million Monaro Highway upgrade package jointly funded by the Commonwealth and ACT governments on a 50:50 basis.
ACT Minister for Roads Chris Steel said the upgrades to the Monaro will be going ahead, with construction work due to start in the second quarter of 2021. “The ACT Government’s financial contribution to the upgrade of the Monaro Highway was funded in the 2018-19 ACT Budget. The Federal Government also committed $100 million to the project,” he said. “It was announced last year [in
November] that we will be bringing forward $45 million in funding to fast track the project - $30 million from the Commonwealth and $15 million from the ACT Government. We are in the early stages of design and it is anticipated construction for the whole project will take approximately four years.” Deputy Prime Minister and Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development, Michael McCormack, said the flyover was part of a suite of improvements at the Lanyon Drive intersection. “The Lanyon Drive flyover will improve traffic flow during the morning and afternoon peak periods, getting commuters home sooner and safer,” Mr McCormack said. “The traffic lights at the Alexander Maconochie Centre intersection and at the southbound Monaro Highway intersection with Lanyon Drive will be removed and the signalised intersection at Lanyon Drive and Sheppard Street upgraded to improve access into and out of the Hume commercial centre.” These designs are for the first stage of the Monaro Highway
upgrade project that will also see improvements to the intersections with Isabella Drive, Mugga Lane, Tralee Street and Sheppard Street. The ACT Government will be contacting local stakeholders, including businesses in Hume, over the coming weeks to start consultation on the proposed designs. Senator for the ACT Zed Seselja said he looked forward to the construction getting underway. “The release of the concept design is an important step toward construction and I am pleased to see we are a step closer to getting Canberrans home sooner and safer,” he said. “I have been prosecuting the case for this much needed flyover since my first term as Senator for the ACT.” Safety improvements are also well underway further south on the Monaro, with the addition of an overtaking lane and turning lanes near Royalla, which will improve safety for those on the way to the snow fields, due to be completed this year. - Allison Turnbull
Slow down for safer streets Active travel has boomed during the COVID-19 pandemic, prompting the ACT Government to remind motorists travelling through Canberra’s suburbs to slow down. ACT Minister for Roads and Active Travel, Chris Steel, said ‘slower streets’ is a community initiative that encourages motorists to slow down and be mindful that there are more people out and about in the neighbourhood walking and cycling. “This is not an enforceable requirement. It is simply a request to people driving to be on the look-out for their neighbours who are walking and cycling through residential streets,” Mr Steel said. “This initiative may even help to address a significant issue of motorists travelling around 8

corners too fast, making them unprepared for any hazard ahead such as a person walking on the road or riding a bike.” The ACT Government is working with residents’ groups to install signs to remind people to slow down and look out for one another. The residents of Aranda, Crace, Downer and Farrer will notice slow down signage has been installed at various locations around their suburbs. The decision follows a call in late April from Australian health and transport experts, sent to all State and Territory transport ministers, to enact urgent measures to support safe walking and cycling during the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr Ben Beck, from the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine at Monash University,
led the call and is concerned paths and cycleways are inadequate to handle the physical activity requirement during this crisis. Experts also noted safe cycling and walking will be imperative in reactivating the economy when social distancing measures are relaxed, enabling people to travel to work and school using transport modes that are both safe and healthy. Minister Steel said the ACT Government would like to sustain the increase in walking and cycling beyond the pandemic, and “at an appropriate time, welcome commuters back onto public transport”. To encourage active travel to continue long term, Mr Steel said the ACT Government is “fasttracking new and upgraded paths throughout the Territory and we

Canberra cafes and restaurants reopen to reduced numbers From last Saturday 16 May, a select number of cafes, restaurants and other eateries across the ACT opened their doors to welcome customers for the first time since March. With a 10-patron limit in place, many eateries decided to remain
takeaway only, given opening up for so few seated customers is financially unviable for most. ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr acknowledged as much when he announced the easing of restrictions on 12 May.

“The vast majority of the hospitality industry will remain takeaway only for now,” he said. Fyshwick café and grocer As Nature Intended is among those businesses that recommenced receiving diners over the weekend. Owner Beata Wilder told Canberra Weekly that given they operate as both a café and grocer, she had to seat her dine-in customers in their outdoor area around a fire pit so shoppers could still get their groceries indoors. “We had quite a lot of customers sitting outside quite happily, it was a beautiful day … so we don’t know how that’s going to work in the future,” she said. “People have had enough of sitting at home, and just even to go out it’s a pleasure.” Ms Wilder said an increase in the limit of patrons up to 20, as would be the case when the ACT moves into stage 2 of the Commonwealth Government’s COVIDSafe plan,
wouldn’t make a big difference to how she does business. “I don’t think it would make a lot of changes … It’s probably not enough to pay for everything at a coffee shop. “At the moment we are doing the little steps forward, and if something else happens like a second wave … then that would probably end us all,” she said. Ms Wilder remains uncertain about how the dine-in patron limits are to be enforced moving forward. “How are you going to restrict those 10 or 20 to come in? Do they book, do they stay an hour … we’ve never had to say ‘time’s up’.” Ms Wilder said myriad local hospitality business owners have decided to stay shut due to reopening not being worth it. “A lot of my friends with restaurants decided not to open because they can’t follow the restrictions … They feel like it’s not worth it for them to open,” she said. - Denholm Samaras

news Virtual visits keep detainees connected Virtual visits have become the temporary norm at the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) at Hume to mitigate the risks associated with COVID-19 and ensure detainees remain connected to their families. The audio-visual visits started on 27 March in place of social visits. A Justice and Community Services Directorate spokesperson said there has been an average of 38 virtual visits per day. “Due to the requirement to maintain social distancing protocols at the Alexander Maconochie Centre, ACTCS (ACT Corrective Services) are only able to offer each detainee access to one, one-hour video visit per week at this time. Previously, detainees were entitled to two, one-hour face-to-face visits per week,” the spokesperson said. All detainees have also been provided with a weekly allowance of $20 credit to use on the detainee phone system until in-person visits resume. ACT Minister for Corrections and Justice Health, Shane Rattenbury, said suspending
face-to-face visits has “been essential to protect our detainees during the pandemic, but keeping connected with loved ones is also vital”. “Connecting with each other via video has been a good ‘plan B’ during this difficult period, and I am pleased ACT Corrective Services was able to put the system in place so quickly.” ACT Corrective Services Commissioner Jon Peach said the virtual visits recognise the “significant importance that the maintenance of ties with family and friends plays for detainee wellbeing and longer-term reintegration”. Mr Peach said the service has been well received and highly beneficial to detainees and their loved ones. “It has been even more pleasing that I have received anecdotal feedback from families and friends that the use of the video visits has allowed visits to occur with loved ones across Australia where normal visits provision would not permit due to the tyranny of distance.” More broadly, ACTCS is taking necessary

news Local team keeps music Live in Ya Lounge For both punters and musicians, you can’t beat the energy of a live gig, but founder of Live in Ya Lounge, Rob Cartwright, has come very close with his new venture. ICYMI (in case you missed it), live music and all the industries that revolve around it have been stopped in their tracks during the current pandemic. Live in Ya Lounge was founded to provide musicians with an opportunity to have a live performance broadcast digitally at an industry standard – a full production complete with professional audio and lighting. Having already presented three concerts, demand is at a point where they will soon be presenting gigs two nights a week, with bookings through until July. Cartwright, also managing director of Event AV Services, saw his audio-visual business come to a standstill when the COVID-19 restrictions were enacted in March. “We’ve got 27 people on JobKeeper. When that all first happened, we made a commitment to keep everyone on and find a way through,” he said.
“Bands were in a similar boat where their entire livelihood was taken away from them.” Cartwright said he worked “really hard” with ACT Health and other departments to get an approval process to ensure they could operate. “I don’t think anyone had every written a sanitisation policy for a microphone before,” he smiled. Cartwright said both the bands and audiences have been astonished by the quality his team are able to produce. “People think it’s going to be like what else they’ve seen during the pandemic, which is recorded on someone’s iPhone in a lounge room. “What we’re producing is very different to that, it really is a virtual concert. High-level professional video, audio with lighting. “There’s seven cameras, camera operators, lighting operators, studio set up with audio … as high a quality as we can produce to get as good an experience as you would have got in a concert otherwise.” Pivoting into live digital broadcasting has presented myriad challenges for Cartwright and his

team, which they’ve embraced wholeheartedly. “We’re doing a whole lot of learning very quickly but, like anybody, you’re grateful to have something to do … it gives you a sense of purpose.” Post-pandemic, Cartwright thinks there will be space for his service and believes the events industry will experience permanent change on the back of COVID-19. Being a self-funded operation raising funds by donation, he said Live in Ya Lounge will eventually require extra funding to continue. Go to liveinyalounge.com to find out more. - Denholm Samaras

Local doctor spotlight
expanding experience and care in Bruce “With 25 doctors we have hundreds of years of cumulative medical experience and clinical care to offer patients,” says Dr Chris Harrison (photo above right), Medical Coordinator at Ochre Medical Centre Bruce. “We’re a ‘can do’ clinic, taking on everything from vasectomies to iron infusions. And now we welcome even more experience to the team with a new colleague - Dr Sneha Malik.” Dr Malik’s (photo above) special interests include preventative health, paediatrics, mental health and women’s health. “Every day is different for us as GPs,” says Dr Malik. “There is always a challenge of not knowing what will come through the door next, which is very intellectually stimulating.” And a GP visit can lead to a long-term relationship with an entire family. “One day, I saw a little girl as my new patient. She had a red, swollen ankle and mild fever. Her mum thought it was just a sprain, but brought her in as it was getting worse. I suspected septic arthritis and immediately arranged for her to be seen at Emergency Department. She recovered well post IV antibiotics. “I called the girl’s mother the next day, when her daughter was still in hospital. She really appreciated the follow up, saying she felt supported. Since then, I’ve cared for the whole family, including seeing her through her second pregnancy and she’s now pregnant with her third child!”
A ‘one stop shop’ care team “Our nurses are fantastic too,” Dr Harrison continues. “Half a dozen of the team have special interests in addition to their general nursing qualifications. We have a diabetic educator, an immunisation specialist and nurses who focus on women’s health and aged care.”
“Many of our patients come to us because they can see their GP, get their blood tests done at Laverty Pathology down the corridor, see their physio, orthopaedic specialist or podiatrist, buy medications or get advice at Capital Chemist downstairs and grab a drink or a bite at the coffee shop on the way out - all in the one purpose-built clinic.”
I worked out there had been a communication problem. She was very grateful that this was identified and with the GP we came up with a plan to stop the medication and keep a close eye on her. “That’s the importance of reviewing patients, I can pick up on medication related problems or oversights.”
Getting the medications right Pelvic floor-focused physio
One unusual resource at the centre is Pharmacist Astrid Socha. Since January she’s been carrying out medication management reviews for Ochre patients, supported by a grant from the Capital Health Network. “When patients come to see me, I ask to see all their medications. People often see multiple specialists and their GP might not be across all medications prescribed, which could lead to medication misadventure. I investigate what medications people are actually taking to identify any safety problems and help optimise treatment. I also answer any questions GPs have about medication shortages or interactions, and help patients understand why they’re taking medications, what they do and any side effects to look out for. “I saw a patient recently who just came out of hospital,” she says. “She was still taking a medication that she should have stopped when she left hospital and it was causing bleeding.
Also in the Ochre Medical Centre is Marita O’Shea, a physiotherapist focusing on women’s health. Starting out as a general and sports physio, many of her patients had issues returning to exercise after a baby. This led Marita to an interest in pelvic floor health and additional postgraduate study in 2005. “There’s a real need for this type of physio service in the community and it’s all I’ve done since,” says Marita. Not all her patients are new mothers: “We all have pelvic floors! I see younger women with endometriosis, women who become symptomatic as they come into menopause, basically women of all ages. Problems from pelvic pain and urinary incontinence to vaginal prolapse and bowel issues are common – it’s just that we don’t like to talk about them.” Marita’s approach varies according to patient needs: “There’s a myth that it’s always about pelvic floor strengthening, but it’s not. Some
women have over-active pelvic floors, so they need help to downtrain and relax those muscles; others need advice on bladder management, fluid intake and bowel habits. Many women need help with lifestyle modification so they can exercise safely.”
Don’t put off the serious stuff – we have the tech! Dr Harrison’s current concern is that fear of COVID-19 might lead some patients to avoid making important appointments. “Canberra has been spectacularly good at self-isolating and we’ve flattened the curve,” says Dr Harrison. “But it’s really important that people don’t put off any serious concerns or potentially serious health issues.
“it’s important to keep following your care plan and doing your regular check-ups” “If you’ve got lumps and bumps that shouldn’t be there, new skin things that aren’t healing, or serious symptoms of any kind, get them looked at straight away. Also, if you suffer from any chronic diseases, it’s important to keep following your care plan and doing your regular checkups. Many of these can be done by Medicare-supported phone or video consultations. “We can also send scripts over to the pharmacy electronically, or order a pathology test or an x-ray online. Otherwise, if you want or need to come in, I can assure you that we have strict hygiene practices and social distancing in place to keep everybody safe.”

sport Poke honoured for service to rowing A long-time contributor to Australian rowing as an oarsman and administrator, Robin Poke AM has been recognised for his service as a Life Member of Rowing Australia (RA). For Poke, the recognition is “overwhelming” as he joins Nick Green OAM, Doug Donaghue AM, Noel Donaldson and Katherine Bennett as 2020 Life Members. “I’m astonished that I should be listed among the five people who’ve got this award because the four others are people I’ve admired enormously for a long, long time,” he said. “To be regarded up there with them is quite exceptional.” Born and raised in England, Poke took his first tentative rowing strokes on the River Thames in West London at the age of nine. “I was introduced to the sport by my father. He helped re-establish his
club after the Second World War.” While Poke said he “was never a national champion or anything like that” he did row at a reasonably high level, and even participated at the Henley Royal Regatta in 1957. Poke migrated to Australia in 1969, where he joined the Mosman Rowing Club in Sydney and it was during his time there that he became involved in the administrative side of the sport. He came to Canberra in 1982 and is currently a member of the Canberra Rowing Club, “and have been for many years”. Life Membership of RA is the sport’s highest honour. It is reserved for those who have demonstrated significant, sustained and highquality service that enhances the reputation and future of rowing by virtue of their considerable contribution to rowing nationally.
Now is the time to prepare for take-off... This quieter period in business is a great time to reflect on whether your brand is your best salesperson – because it could be. The role of your brand is to act as a sorting device for customers…to demonstrate shared values and offer a distinct reason to choose you over a competitor while creating an emotional attachment that is genuine and creates lasting value. When we come through this, and we will, your business could be primed to capture market share in your industry. If you feel your brand could benefit from reinvigoration, give me a call on 0402 136 260. We’d love to help. Call Peter Ring on 0402 136 260 or visit altitudebrands.com.au
In terms of his achievements, RA noted that Poke founded the national magazine, Australian Rowing, and was media liaison officer with the Australian team at the Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 Olympic Games. “It’s just enormous,” Poke recalled. “The Olympics are the ultimate and going to an Olympic Games is the most sensational experience. It was beyond anything I’ve ever aspired to.” Poke was also appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in 2013 ‘For significant service to the sport of rowing and the Olympic movement as an administrator, journalist and author’. Gobble Guts advertising moment
Make every mouthful count with Gobble Guts Offering a comprehensive nutrition solution for your tiny human, Gobble Guts is a Canberra-based baby and toddler meal delivery service providing healthy, delicious, nutritionist-designed food. Gobble Guts was started by Katie and Sam Croser in mid-April and since that time they have been overwhelmed by the community uptake and positive feedback they have received. Parents to two children under three, Katie says when their second child arrived, they found themselves time poor, but still wanting to provide healthy and nutritious meals. After looking at baby and toddler meals in the supermarket and online, the couple wasn’t satisfied with the options available to them – and Gobble Guts was born. With the creation of Gobble Guts, Katie and Sam also hope to free up your time so you can spend

Gobble Guts meals are plant-based, all natural, and free from the eight common allergens – milk, eggs, fish, shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat and soy. The meals are also gluten-free and contain no added sugars, additives or preservatives. “We only offer real food,” Katie says. Gobble Guts believes in the importance of gut health at any age, so all their meals contain ingredients that support digestive health and a flourishing microbiome. This week, Jeff Popple reviews three novels about pandemics and viruses. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com The End Of October by Lawrence Wright
Lockdown by Peter May
Bantam, $32.99
Riverrun, $22.99
Lawrence Wright’s The End Of October is a scarily prescient novel about what happens when a deadly virus breaks loose. It starts at an internment camp in Indonesia with 47 people dying from a mysterious fever. Before well renowned microbiologist and epidemiologist Dr Henry Parsons can contain it, others are infected, including a pilgrim on the annual Haji to Mecca. Soon the virus goes global and Parsons must try to identify the real source of the virus and find a cure. Set against a backdrop of government plots and incompetence, and containing a wealth of fascinating detail, this is a gripping and timely read.
When Peter May wrote Lockdown back in 2005 at the height of the Bird Flu, publishers were quick to dismiss it as being unrealistic. Fast forward to 2020 and suddenly it is all too real and very publishable. It is set in a London beset by a global pandemic, which has already claimed tens of thousands of lives and left the city in lockdown. Amid the chaos, DI Jack MacNeil is trying to find the killer of a young girl, but it is an investigation which some powerful and dangerous people want stopped. A very dark and compelling thriller which holds attention from beginning to end.
The Andromeda Evolution by Daniel H. Wilson Harper Collins, $32.99
The Andromeda Evolution has been out for a little while, but its themes have recently gained more currency. This sequel to Michael Crichton’s landmark, The Andromeda Strain, deals with the threat posed by the re-emergence of an extra-terrestrial microbe, 50 years after it first crashed to earth. A team of experts are sent to the middle of the Brazilian jungle to investigate the new discovery, which appears to be evolving. If they cannot stop it, the ramifications for the world will be catastrophic. It lacks some of the freshness of Crichton’s original, but is a very enjoyable adventure novel full of mystery and action.

To make extra money, Ellie authors her classmates’ essays. One day, she is approached by the loveable but inarticulate football player Paul Munsky (Daniel Diemer), who asks Ellie to write a love letter to his crush: the beautiful Aster Flores (Alexxis Lemire). The movie is the 16th film adaptation of the 1897 French play, Cyrano de Bergerac. Most audiences know the story from 1987’s Roxanne, where the nasally endowed CD Bailes (Steve Martin) woos the beautiful Roxanne (Daryl Hannah) on behalf of a clueless stud. The Boss Baby: Back in Business (PG) of homosexuality from an immigrant perspective within a traditional religious setting. Ellie is intelligent, independent but quiet. If not for the lure of money and the unrequited love of a fellow classmate, she would likely ignore all calls to a future beyond graduation and stay in the safe bubble she has made for herself. With the charm of a ‘going home’ movie, The Half of It explores the awkward trepidation of growing up and moving on, coupled with the want to know oneself and to live authentically. Verdict: A charming, quaint movie which unfortunately derails in the third act, careering away from the lofty, genre-defying ideas set up early on. 3 stars. The Half of It is streaming on Netflix. - Luke McWilliams | themovieclub.net
When you have a tiny human in the house, it’s a relief to find a program that is both colourful and entertaining enough to keep them occupied (for a brief time at least) and is still a bit of fun for older viewers as well. Enter Netflix’s The Boss Baby: Back in Business, a television spinoff of the 2017 film which explores the ongoing adventures of Boss Baby and his older brother Tim Templeton as they work to preserve ‘baby love’ everywhere. At a runtime of 24 minutes, the episodes are not too lengthy for younger audiences, though the ability to hold their attention varies depending on the storyline and accompanying action. This holds true for adults as well. Despite this, there is still
plenty to enjoy about the show from the cute animation style, to the distinct personalities of the characters, and overarching storylines. Yes, you read that correct. Each season of The Boss Baby: Back in Business has an overarching storyline and there are even some twists! This is a definite bonus for adults sitting through the show and, like me, you might find yourself invested in finding out who is trying to destroy ‘baby love’ and how Boss Baby is going to save the day. Netflix has recently released season three of this series, so if you’re yet to check it out or were waiting for some new episodes to drop, now is your chance. - Allison Turnbull

wellbeing Essential oils Not only do they smell divine, essential oils can elevate the healing benefits of bathing. You only need six to eight drops to get the benefits. Try adding them whilst the bath is still filling up to help the oils disperse. For promoting relaxation and better sleep, consider lavender, chamomile, ylang ylang or rose.

Soak up the benefits The days and nights are cooling down, which means it’s the perfect time to soak in a steaming hot bath and soak up the benefits – for your body and mind. Who said self-care had to be arduous? If you really want to maximise the health benefits, considering adding at least some of the elements below.
Epsom salts
Epsom salts are high in magnesium, the mineral that helps relieve muscle spasms and tension. Magnesium is readily absorbed through the skin, so bathing in Epsom salts is a great way to replenish this key mineral that is depleted by stress and physical exertion. You’ll also be setting yourself up for a great night’s sleep.
If you really want to feel like royalty, adding flower petals to your bath is the way to go. If you can’t pick them from your garden, you can source dried versions that will still delight once added to water. Try fragrant rose petals, lavender, sweet jasmine or chamomile.
Lights Nothing says ‘keep alert’ like bright lights, so light some candles instead and feel your mind and body start to wind down.
Sound The right music is the icing on the cake for a healing bath. For something truly different, try a ‘sound bath’, a relaxation technique and meditative experience in its own right. Using different vibrational sounds produced from voice, singing bowls and other instruments to create a wave of sound that can be deeply relaxing. Try it for yourself!

A holistic approach to healthy skin Healthy Skin Solutions is committed to not only treating the symptoms of their patients’ skin conditions but treating the underlying cause of the condition as well. These include aspects of health like diet, immune system function, digestion and stress levels, to name a few. Owner and practitioner Luke Clews says that focusing on the broader health picture, while also treating a patient’s symptoms, helps to effect long-lasting benefits. He says the “body is a complex system”, which requires a comprehensive approach to treatment. “We take the time to actually treat the individual patients; there’s no such thing as a ‘one size fits all’ treatment with us.” Luke says coming into winter,
conditions such as eczema, dermatitis and psoriasis can flare up in the cold, dry Canberra climate. Stress is a significant factor for flare-ups of skin conditions, too. “The cold and dry Canberra weather really triggers these conditions, but there’s a lot that can be done for it,” he says. “In terms of staying at home, COVID-19 has certainly worried some people, and that stress can cause certain people’s conditions to get significantly worse. Stress is probably the number one trigger I see.” Healthy Skin Solutions use natural treatment options for their patients, with a strong focus on education for maintaining progress. “Our medications are made from natural ingredients; we very

in the garden
Purchase spring flowering bulbs now from your local garden centre or reputable online supplier.
Chores to tackle in the garden • Now is the time to purchase spring flowering bulbs and deciduous trees, shrubs, vines, and other dormant plants. Visit your local garden centre for ideas and advice. Alternatively, there are also some excellent online suppliers such as Swane’s, Yalca Fruit Trees, Tesselaar, and Daleys Fruit Tree Nursery. Preparing planting sites ahead of time is beneficial as it gives the soil and any added organic matter time to settle
and break down beforehand. • Prune berry canes, blackberry vines, currants and blueberries (maintenance pruning only if needed). Check with local garden experts or online for appropriate treatment for different varieties. Top dress beds with nutritious organic matter (homemade is best wherever possible), and a light covering of mulch to protect the soil while still letting in warming winter sunlight.
Get in and de-compact your soils using a sturdy garden fork or broadfork. To minimise future compaction, stick to designated walking areas and apply mulch.
• Create warm micro-climates around vulnerable plants using strategically placed rocks, bodies of water, or berms of sticks, straw, or similar (frost works its way down hill and pools in low areas). U-shaped hedges of hardy plant species can also be planted to trap northerly sunlight. • Re-locate frost sensitive pot plants to sunny protected spots. Avoid positions which receive sunlight first thing in the morning as it can damage the cells of frosted leaves. • Harvest ripe citrus fruit to prevent it stealing much-needed nutrients from the plant. Apply seaweed extract fortnightly to give a

boost of potassium and increase resistance to frost damage. • De-compact garden soils and mulches to improve aeration, encourage soil life and absorb winter rains. Use a sturdy garden fork or broadfork such as locally designed Gundaroo tiller – simply push in and lever forward without turning the soil, being careful of plant roots. For more open areas with less plants or in seasonal veg patches, you can lever backwards and lift the soil. Work backwards to prevent undoing your efforts. To reduce future compaction, stick to designated path areas and keep soils mulched.

Classic Canberra charm Ainslie 4 Alt Crescent This truly stunning home in Canberra’s premier suburb of Ainslie perfectly blends modern elegance with classic charm. “It is one of the very first houses built in Canberra,” says LJ Hooker Dickson franchise owner, licensed agent and auctioneer, Stephen Bunday. “It was built in the early 1920s when the suburb of Ainslie encompassed both Reid and Braddon, so it is very similar in
style to many Reid houses built at a similar time. “It’s been sympathetically renovated and extended and has enormous character.” The home’s character-filled features include 9ft-high batten ceilings, hung timber sash windows, picture rails and two original fireplaces, as well as modern inclusions such as cypress and jarrah flooring, ducted gas heating, security
system with CCTV and a renovated kitchen with Caesarstone benches. The master bedroom, at the front of the home, includes a fireplace, ensuite and built-in robe. Bedrooms two and three also boast built-in robes and share access to a sunroom or study, while the fourth bedroom off the family room is the perfect guest retreat. Outside, there is space in spades for entertaining friends and family; a pergola out the back ensures a covered area for year-round alfresco dining. Bunday says this home could suit a range of buyers, namely “professional couples who love to eat out and like the idea of Braddon as their playground,” and families who can make use of the 235sqm of living space and the large block.
Bunday says homes in this highly sought-after area of Ainslie are a very rare find, indeed. “The home is set in a small quiet enclave off Limestone Avenue at the City end of Ainslie,” he says. “The street has been extremely tightly held and it’s literally across the road from the buzzing, hip Braddon precinct.”

Weekly market wrap The irony of banks forecasting property values
Property values have become a hot topic as market analysts share wildly varying short-term forecasts making headlines in mainstream media. Forecasts I’ve read have varied from property values declining by up to 5% to, at worst-case, declining by up to 30%. The analyst predicting the up to 5% decline suggests property values will flatline for a few months before rebounding and the growth cycle commencing with values increasing by another 10-20%. This begs the question: how are they so far apart and why are banks’ in-house economists so pessimistic? As part of providing economic stimulus, the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) provided a Term Funding Facility (TFF) for the banking system,
under which banks have access to funding from the RBA for three years at 0.25%, with additional funding available if banks increase lending to businesses, especially small and medium sized businesses. These funding costs are substantially lower than the 1% estimated wholesale cost of funding around that same maturity. The RBA’s Statement on Monetary Policy explains that so far, banks have only drawn down around $4 billion, representing 3.5% of their aggregate TFF allowances. The size of the facility has increased from $90 billion at its inception to $115 billion in May. This reflects growth of banks’ lending to business, which increases their allowances under the facility. While some banks are expected to increasingly draw upon their TFF allowances as existing funding matures, term funding needs more generally have been low. Australian Banking Association CEO Anna Bligh said that banks stood shoulder to shoulder with Australians who were suffering as a result of the COVID-19 health and economic crisis. “Banks are here to support customers throughout the crisis and help the economy on the other side as we recover from the devastating effects of this pandemic,” Ms Bligh said. One of the biggest risks to the market,
WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST
forced sellers, appears to be nullified by banks’ preparedness to use cheap funding via TFF allowances to continue supporting borrowers. Looking specifically at the property market in Canberra, weekly new properties listed on Allhomes have fallen by 38.32% from the week ending 27 March, prior to the banning of open homes and public auctions to the week ending 15 May. Low stock volumes have seen the auction clearance rate remain above 55% for the last three weeks after having reached a low of 39% on 4 April (noting auction clearance rates were not reported on the Easter or Anzac Day long weekends). A lack of stock coming to market, historically low mortgage interest rates and the RBA providing cheap funding to banks creating latitude to cost-effectively work with borrowers who require ongoing assistance post repayment holidays are mitigating the biggest risks within analysts’ forecasts. This makes me wonder: if those who are wanting to own property in Canberra, and are delaying making their decision hoping the pessimistic market forecasts are realised, understand the significant market forces that may be working against them?
Tenant-landlord dispute service up and running
The Conflict Resolution Service is providing a free mediation service that can be used for tenants and landlords to come to a temporary agreement with regards to residential tenancies during the virus crisis.
Mediation is now available for residential landlords and tenants impacted by COVID-19. The service was announced by the ACT Government 36
canberraweekly.com.au
on Wednesday 6 May and was made available from Monday 11 May. The Conflict Resolution Service (CRS) is providing the free service, which can be used for tenants and landlords to come to a temporary agreement with regards to residential tenancies during the virus crisis. “The CRS will work with parties to resolve their disputes through a facilitated discussion, negotiate options and work to agree on a path forward,” said ACT Attorney-General, Gordon Ramsay. “Parties who are interested in resolving their residential tenancy disputes related to COVID-19 impacts, including negotiating a rent reduction, can contact CRS for support and assistance.” The ACT Greens have welcomed the service, with housing spokesperson Caroline Le Couteur labelling the move a “huge win” for
Canberra renters. “The Prime Minister recently called on renters struggling during this pandemic to just ‘work it out’ with their landlords. But there is often already a power imbalance between tenants and landlords that, for some, will only be exacerbated during this crisis. This is clearly understood, as the Government provided a similar mediation service for commercial tenancies many weeks ago,” she said. The ACT had previously introduced some rental relief measures, including financial incentives for landlords to reduce rents and a moratorium on evictions, as well as moving to ensure tenants cannot be “blacklisted” for failing to make rental payments during the pandemic. Registration for mediation is now open via crs.org.au or by calling 6189 0590.

Rural and regal Goulburn NSW 129 Marys Mount Road This truly unique property is nothing like anything else on the market today. Set on the outskirts of Goulburn, on just over 2 acres, this grand 1,600sqm manor is being offered for sale for the first time since its construction. Peter Mylonas Property Solutions’ principal, Peter Mylonas, says this home was originally home to Goulburn’s former mayor, Tony Lamarra. “There is no other home like this in Goulburn,” Mylonas says. The grand entrance to this home sets the scene for the elegantly quirky touches throughout. A grand double staircase is also a home for the bar area, part of the enormous foyer with double-height ceilings. The mezzanine provides
access to the bedrooms, with views down to the grand entry way below. The six-bedroom residence boasts myriad accommodation and entertaining options, with large living spaces, billiard room, detached office and a spacious attic for storage. There’s also a double garage, as well as separate garaging for a further six cars. The grounds are spacious, and the residence sits proudly on a circular driveway, surrounded by wellestablished trees for privacy and a leafy outlook. “It’s in an elevated position, with uninterrupted, 360-degree rural/ district views,” Mylonas says. He says the property would be suitable to be used for functions, such as weddings, as a bed and breakfast, or for large families.

Beachfront blocks in the older established areas on the coast are praccally non-existent. Northcove Road is the blue ribbon street that runs along the cliff face that joins Long beach to Maloney’s beach. This vacant lot is incredibly placed as the second last lot from the sands of Maloney’s. The stairs down to a secluded beach is posioned metres from the back gate. The land itself is flat with southern views over Batemans Bay and the ocean. There are no issues with sand dunes blocking the view, as it is beaufully elevated with reserve to the cliffs edge. The bonus of being a lile higher means any building restricons from coastal inundaon are oen negated. The property was originally purchased with the vacant lot next door, prior to a home being built on Lot 173. The parcel comes with a very expensive powder coated railing fence on all external sides. The internal division between the home and land has a retaining wall ready for a fence to be erected. This is a gorgeous blank canvas for your architect to create something magical.

Her connection with her loved ones needs to be open and free. This is a big year for her own growth and for gaining further recognition for her talents. Romantically, she is ready to move forwards and set the stage for the next chapter in her life.

“It looks abstract because it is a series of dots but it is runners on the streets of the New York Marathon.” The painting was a gift to Shaun from his dad and sister for his 50th birthday. “I like it for the fact it was given to me on a special occasion by special people but also the strong link to my love of marathon running.”
MANTLE CLOCK This French marble mantle clock is about 130 years old. When Shaun broke the Australian steeplechase record, he received a cash bonus and “wanted to buy something to remember the occasion and signify the achievement”. What better than a clock - a classic record of time.
Shaun Creighton Former Olympian
Earlier this year, Canberra lawyer Shaun Creighton was presented with the Athletics Australia Edwin Flack Award at the AIS. This prestigious award is presented annually to an Australian athlete who has rendered distinguished services to the sport of athletics. The award acknowledged Shaun’s contributions to athletics over the past 30 years, which has included roles as an athlete, coach, lawyer, tribunal member and national selector. Shaun says he’s “still wearing a lot of those hats” and, as an athlete, broke the Australian over-50 marathon record last year. A long distance runner, Shaun represented Australia at two Olympic Games and four Commonwealth Games. During his career, he held Australian records at three distances – 3,000m, 10,000m and the 3,000m steeplechase, which still stands. He is now a Partner Director of Moulis Legal. - Allison Turnbull
MEDALS As a schoolboy runner, Shaun never won at State or National Championships but in 1987 he took bronze in the U20 steeplechase championships. “At the time I thought that would be as good as it gets but with the benefit of hindsight, it was an important stepping stone to a far better running career than anticipated.” He has won 13 Australian championship gold medals but said his single bronze means more.
CANBERRA RAIDERS As a kid, Shaun’s first sporting ambition was to play first grade rugby league. “I’ve always been a big rugby league fan,” he said, and has been “a Raiders tragic” since moving to Canberra over 30 years ago. “I love nothing more to go out with friends and family to the stadium.”
