This week... Every time I see a crimson rosella, which is often in the bush capital, I’m reminded of a dear friend’s late mother who loved the vibrant plumage of the local birdlife, especially the aforementioned red and blue parrot. Similarly, sulphur-crested cockatoos now remind me of my late brother, Tony, who passed away in Queensland on Sunday. That same morning, a lone cockatoo peered at me pottering in my garden; then, while out walking, a flock of cockatoos landed in a mighty gum beside us and one particularly cheeky fellow, flashing his yellow crest, squawked at us, as if to say “G’day mate!”. Later that afternoon, moments after Dad rang to tell me of Tony’s peaceful passing, one sole cockatoo flew directly overhead. When I spoke to my niece, she said a raucous clattering of cockatoos was swirling around the family property as her dear dad sighed his final breath. My brother was big, blond, loud and full of personality – you might say “cocky”. He was also generous, intelligent, brave, resilient, hard-working and quick-witted. Due to the restricted number of flights to Brisbane due to COVID-19, I wasn’t able to be there for his passing but am there now to say farewell. This week, I am grateful for a lifetime of knowing my brother, and the love of our parents, our family and his offspring, who were right there at the end. Vale, Tony Lovell. - Julie Samaras

Hands Across Canberra CEO Peter Gordon with TADACT community engagement manager Trudy Taylor. Image supplied.
Recovery appeal to aid charity sector Hands Across Canberra launched a recovery appeal on Wednesday 10 June, after its research showed 97% of Canberra’s charities had been financially impacted following the bushfire season and COVID-19. The community foundation group
works with over 250 local community organisations and conducted a threemonth survey which found 83% of the sector had been “significantly impacted” in that time. The appeal, which launched on Wednesday morning, already has
over 35 charities signed up to be involved. Technology for Ageing and Disability ACT (TADACT) will be taking part in the appeal, as community engagement manager Trudy Taylor said the not-for-profit organisation had taken a huge hit in recent months. “We have basically had to cancel all our community engagement and fundraising activities,” she said. “Fundraising makes up one third of our income, so we have had a major financial hit during this time.” The organisation specialises in customising equipment for those with disabilities and older people with special needs, servicing between 350 and 400 families per annum. Ms Taylor said it would have a devastating impact if the niche service could not continue to help those in the community. “Our service is a very bespoke one as most of our clients are those who can’t find equipment for them on the shelves,” she said. “Our staff and volunteers have been doing this for a really long time
and they have a broad knowledge of the disability sector.” Hands Across Canberra (HAC), in collaboration with the Snow Foundation and John James Foundation, had previously created a rapid response round of grant funding worth $500,000 in March this year. HAC CEO Peter Gordon said it become apparent that more needed to be done. “Our message is simple, if you are in a position to help and donate, please do. It will make such a difference to many charities who are struggling to keep their doors open, let alone offer support to those who need it,” he said. “Our appeal has been welcomed by the community sector, with over 35 organisations already signing up to drive their own fundraising efforts under the Canberra recovery appeal banner.” Donations can be made to single charities or the whole appeal at the Hands Across Canberra website; handsacrosscanberra.org.au - Danielle Meddemmen
100 new ACT public service jobs created One hundred new, temporary, casual jobs will be created within the ACT Public Service across a plethora of roles, following another expansion of the Jobs for Canberrans Fund. Tuesday’s (9 June) $8 million announcement will expand the ‘Jobs for Canberrans’ to $28 million, creating in total almost 500 new jobs. The new jobs will be across maintenance, involving restoration work in nature parks, reserves, and city service assets, plus office work in call centres, information, administration, and assistance. ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the ACT Government is the most occupationally diverse employer of any Australian government, given they are responsible for the functions of 6
both state government and local council. “We have a very wide range of occupations and skill needs within our employment, so extending this program together with our ongoing recruitment campaigns … provides a timely boost to employment in the ACT,” he said. “What this does is add to aggregate demand in our economy, so more people in our economy, more money to spend, the multiplier effect here is more jobs in the ACT economy.” He said the ACT Government has received “thousands” of applications since the fund was established in late April. Once the fund’s temporary contracts are complete, Mr Barr hopes many workers employed through the fund can continue
working in the ACT public service. “What will be the case with the staff that we’ve taken on through these programs is that many of them will progress through ACT Government employment ranks and opportunities … If that’s their career progression and desire.” Mr Barr said the fund will continue to create jobs, noting an “ongoing need for the government to both be an employer and to expand its employment opportunities,” as well as partnering with the private sector in a range of economic development and infrastructure initiatives. So far, the jobs created involve a wide range of duties including cleaning schools, maintaining public places and restoring bushfire damaged regions. Access Canberra also welcomed
17 new team members who will be put to work answering calls in the Contact Centre. Shadow Minister for Business and Employment Andrew Wall said the government should be doing more to create new jobs in the private sector too. “While adding jobs to the ACT public service is welcome news to many, it’s cold comfort for almost 10,000 Canberrans who are out of work and the local and family businesses that employed them. “If small and family businesses suffer, jobs suffer. That’s why we’re pushing for more support to back Canberra’s local employers,” Mr Wall said. New roles under the Fund will be finalised over coming weeks and made available online via the Casual Jobs Register.

news Super woman earns Queen’s Birthday honour When women avoid poverty in retirement it’s thanks to the work of feminist giants like Catherine Wood AM. Ms Wood has been a strong advocate for workplace equality for more than 20 years in a career that spans trade unions, super boards and charity organisations – too many to name. It was her work in these fields both paid and unpaid - that earned her a Queen’s Birthday honour (Member (AM) in the General Division of the Order of Australia), announced Monday 8 June, for services to super, women and trades. Ever the activist, Ms Wood said while she “very much appreciates” the nomination, she would like to acknowledge the award within the context that fewer women receive these awards than men. Ms Wood was born and raised
in a Catholic family in Box Hill, Melbourne. Her mum worked in the family home to raise her and her four siblings and her dad was a tax inspector. She said it was this family setting that instilled in her a strong belief in the rights of ordinary working Australians, particularly female workers. “You could say it was in my blood,” she said. Her career began in the Victorian trade union movement in the 1980s where she worked on the negotiation of compulsory superannuation – something younger women have come to take for granted. But she said when she got involved in super, it was a “joke”. “Women lost their super when they left the workforce, which they almost always did to care for their
family, sometimes they weren’t even allowed back to work,” she said. This policy negotiation led her to a life in Canberra and directly to super funds and boards. Ms Wood said being part of the evolution of super in the 1980s and 1990s was “very fulfilling”. “It had elements of all the social equality issues I cared about and it was a new area that required lots of learning and provided lots of stimulation.” It was a time of change for women and she enjoyed a strong comradery with other females in the field. “I worked with loads of women in super who were all great feminists and we became activists together,” she said. Ms Wood was the inaugural chair the Canberra Mother’s Day Classic in 1998.
The event was supported by Women in Super – an organisation of which Ms Wood is the chair. She said they started the event to raise money for breast cancer research, which at the time was unfunded and a major health issue. Along with creating massive structural change for women, Ms Wood has also raised five children of her own. She said it’s her contributions to shining a light on the problems within the superannuation system that she’s most proud of. “It’s now commonly known that women retire with less money than men and receive less tax concessions than men,” she said. “The awareness has grown, but there are still problems. “We still have a long way to go.” - Cassandra Power

HomeGround Real Estate Canberra advertising moment
HomeGround celebrates one year HomeGround Real Estate Canberra is celebrating one year of providing Canberrans with affordable rental properties, with around 100 tenancies currently under management. They are encouraging more landlords to consider renting out their property under the affordable scheme and make a real difference in their own community.
U
nder the scheme, landlords can lease their property through HomeGround at a reduced rate and receive a 100% exemption from their land tax and a tax donation receipt for any foregone rent. HomeGround’s Business Development Manager, Maria Edwards, says the first year of the scheme has been a great success, with every one of their 46 landlords having “made a difference to the lives of someone less fortunate”. “Housing affordability is no longer solely a tenants’ problem in the ACT, and through HomeGround we are able to address the situation from both sides and bridge the gap to assist with keeping up the supply of affordable housing in the ACT.” With a successful first year under their belt, and the introduction of a second strata and property manager, Stuart Dovers, the organisation is going from strength to strength, and is encouraging

prospective landlords to sign up to the affordable rental scheme. “It’s a very individual decision,” Ms Edwards says, “so the solutions that we have are quite tailored to their individual properties and circumstances”. “We have a range of options, but the reduced rent affordable option should be considered. The quality of the tenants is amazing, and their properties are well managed. We have a track record now so we can give real examples of the success of the scheme.” She says the scheme has had great feedback from both tenants and landlords, and with uncertainty in the rental market generally due to COVID-19, now is a great time to check out the benefits on offer through HomeGround. By contacting HomeGround and outlining your situation, you’ll receive a comprehensive financial summary, and there’s no cost to sign up an already tenanted property. “If you would prefer to rent your property
at market rate, you can still do so through HomeGround,” Ms Edwards says, “and all management fees are directed back into Community Housing Canberra (CHC), the largest not-for-profit community housing provider in the ACT.” Andrew Hannan, CEO of CHC under which HomeGround operates, said landlords with more than one property can have HomeGround manage them all. “They don’t all have to be affordable – they can choose how much of a subsidy they want to provide, if any. Even for those that are rented at market rate, they are still contributing to our mission.” “Tenants come from a range of backgrounds, most with single-income households and young children, who are particularly vulnerable in the expensive Canberra rental market,” adds Ms Edwards. “Their gratitude has been overwhelming and all see it as an opportunity to escape the poverty cycle.”

news 45 years of teaching: ‘a difficult job and getting harder’ For almost half a century, Stephen Ford has been teaching students across the ACT, and despite two attempts at retirement, is still working in the classroom, this time at Erindale College. A teacher for 45 years, Stephen’s career was “inspired by a couple of my teachers when I was in school” and he has since proven to be an inspiration for others. This includes Helen Souflias-Mantinaos, a science teacher at Erindale College, who was a student of Stephen’s at Wanniassa High. “Stephen taught me in 1982 which was the second year the school opened. As a science teacher, I think he left a lasting impression on the world of science and I think my interest from there grew,” Helen recalled. “When I knew I was going to become a teacher, which was
12
probably by the end of high school … he was just always a role model of what a good teacher should be.” While many parents have gained a newfound respect for the work of teachers thanks to remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, Stephen said the profession is not attracting the teachers it used to. According to Stephen, teaching is “a difficult job and getting harder” because they are no longer just teachers but counsellors, social workers and career advisors. However, teaching has its rewards. “It’s a hard job but the reason I am in it is for the kids,” he said. “I enjoy the challenges. I love trying to get the kids to try and do their best. “A lot come through life thinking they can’t do … and when they realise that they actually have the ability, they actually really enjoy what they do.” He said good teachers not only
need to know their subject well but be empathetic to students, and that it’s important to attract more people back to the profession. One method Stephen suggests is to bring back scholarships, which is what initially helped him on his career path. “I won a scholarship to do teaching … so I took it and part of that scholarship was guaranteed work in the NT,” he said. Since his time in the NT, Stephen has spent most of his career in the ACT teaching at Weston Creek High, Wanniassa High, Calwell High, Hawker College, University of Canberra, CIT, and Lake Ginninderra College, where he first retired in 2008. “I was retired a few days and the phone rang for a job at Canberra Boys Grammar and then on to Canberra College where they needed a chemistry teacher,” he said.

Electricity prices set to drop ACT residents will soon see cheaper electricity prices, according to the Independent Competition and Regulatory Commission’s (ICRC) final decision on regulated electricity prices released on Friday 5 June. According to the report, a typical customer on ActewAGL’s standing offer contracts will see a 2.56% reduction in retail electricity prices in 2020-21. For the average residential household consuming about 6,500 kWh per year, the expected
price decrease would translate to a reduction of $43 in their annual bill. The ICRC also made two recommendations on making it easier for consumers to compare electricity offers in the ACT, including the development of a reference bill amount and a new obligation for electricity retailers to notify customers if they have a better offer available. For more information on the final electricity prices decision, visit icrc.act.gov.au.

Baseball Canberra to sleep out
The board of Baseball Canberra, led by General Manager Josh Matavesi, will brave the cold and sleep out on the field to raise funds for St Vincent de Paul’s homelessness services at this year’s Vinnies CEO Sleepout on 18 June. Mr Matavesi comes to the position after a background in social work and is passionate about addressing disadvantage in the community. “Seeing the difference that $50 can make to someone is eye-opening,” he said. “It is never too late. Some of our players over the years have come from underprivileged backgrounds, and we know that someone’s background doesn’t determine their future.” The Vinnies CEO Sleepout is a national event occurring on Thursday 18 June. 1 red onion, sliced into rings 8 large portobello mushrooms
8 small unsweetened gherkins
Remove the patties from the fridge and leave for about 10 minutes to come back to room temperature. Melt your preferred cooking fat in a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for 2–3 minutes each side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Transfer to a plate, cover loosely with foil and set aside to rest. Add a little more cooking fat to the pan if needed, along with half the onion and mushrooms, stem-side down. Cook for 4–6 minutes, turning the mushrooms halfway through cooking, or until the onion has softened and caramelised and the mushrooms are soft and tender. Transfer to a plate and repeat with the remaining onion and mushrooms. To plate up, start with a mushroom, stem-side up, on the plate, then layer over a few lettuce leaves followed by one of the burger patties, some tomato and caramelised onion. Top the whole thing with another mushroom, stemside down, then use a toothpick to add some gherkins on top. Repeat with the rest of the ingredients and dig in!

Using a spatula, mash and pull the jackfruit into stringy strips so that it resembles pulled pork. Season with chilli paste, if using, and salt and pepper. Spread the pulled jackfruit evenly on the prepared tray and bake for 10–15 minutes, until golden brown. Toast the burger buns in the oven at the same time until golden brown. Mint-as burger with kiwifruit ketchup Recipe by Daniel Wilson for Australian Lamb australianlamb.com.au 500g lamb mince Sea salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste 1 tsp sriracha seasoning or sauce 10 mint leaves, finely sliced
Place all of the ketchup ingredients into a small saucepan and bring to a simmer over a low heat. Allow to simmer until most of the liquid has evaporated. Place a lid on and cook for another 5 minutes on a low heat to ensure that the kiwifruit is cooked through. Allow to cool, then puree with a stick blender or food processor and transfer to an airtight container. Reserve in the fridge until needed.
4 free range eggs 4 large slices beetroot 4 burger buns 4 leaves iceberg lettuce, washed and torn 4 tomato slices
Preheat a barbecue or frying pan to a high heat, peel the paper off one side of the lamb patties, place exposed side down then peel the paper off the top. Cook for 2-3 minutes then turn over and cook for 2-3 minutes on the other side. Once the patties are cooked, place onto a tray and let rest for 3-4 minutes.
4 Tbsp mayonnaise 4 tsp Dijon mustard 4 Tbsp kiwifruit ketchup (recipe below) Olive oil, for brushing the buns Chipotle, kiwifruit and manuka honey ketchup 2 kiwifruits, peeled and diced 1 Tbsp Manuka honey 1/2 tsp chipotle sauce 50ml apple cider vinegar 1 Tbsp raw sugar Pinch sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

Fresh fish, fresh seafood and fresh oysters arrive daily and we also stock frozen produce and a new grocery range including dry foods, herbs, canned foods and select fruit and vegies.
In a mixing bowl add the salt, pepper, sriracha seasoning and mint to the mince and mix well. Weigh out to 125g balls and place between 2 sheets of baking paper then flatten with the bottom of a saucepan. The patties will shrink when cooking so they will need to be twice the diameter of the bun to make sure they are the perfect bun size when done. Once pressed, place into the fridge until needed.
While the lamb patties are resting, brush the cut side of the buns with olive oil and lightly toast on the barbecue. Fry the eggs on the flat plate or a large frying pan. Once everything is ready, quickly place the lamb patties back onto the heat for 30 seconds each side. Build burgers from the bottom in this order: bun, kiwifruit ketchup, patty, mustard, beetroot, egg, tomato, lettuce, and bun top with mayo spread on it.

Book talk This week, Michael Popple reviews three entertaining recent releases to read by the heater this winter. You can find more of Michael’s book reviews on his blog: unseenlibrary.com The Girl and the Stars by Mark Lawrence Harper Voyager, $32.99
On Abeth, tribes scrape a living on the ice that has frozen much of the planet. There is little room for variation on the ice, and those who stand out are thrown into the Pit. When Yaz, a young girl with power, ends up down the Pit, she discovers a vast new world under the ice, which is both beautiful and extremely dangerous. This an outstanding and complex fantasy/science fiction hybrid, that serves as the first book in an intriguing new series. Lawrence crafts together an intense and captivating tale, which takes place in an elaborate setting. A very impressive read.

Burden (M)
In the small, historic town of Laurens, South Carolina, Mike Burden (Garrett Hedlund), zooms up the ranks in the local Klu Klux Klan (KKK) chapter headed by Tom Griffin (Tom Wilkinson). Soon, however, the Klan open their store; a museum celebrating their history, gaining the attention of local activist, Reverend Kennedy (Forest Whitaker). After reading an article detailing the Redneck Shop and KKK Museum, writer-director Andrew Heckler travelled to the town to meet Reverend Kennedy and members of the KKK. Heckler kept up his relationship with Reverend Kennedy and his family and finished writing the script in 1998. Twenty years later, Heckler and his actors met their reallife counterparts during development, except for Wilkinson, as the real Griffin was considered too coarse. Wilkinson’s interpretation expresses Griffin’s fatherly qualities and goes
someway in showing how one could be indoctrinated into such a group, especially when one is lacking in community, education and means. Hedlund met with Burden, and the resulting performance is distracting. Whilst Hedlund may indeed have executed a masterful impersonation of the real Burden, his performance, including mannerisms, serve as an obstacle in getting to the heart of the character. It is therefore difficult to empathise with the character’s plight and his motivation to change his life when encouraged by his equally distracting partner Judy (Andrea Riseborough). Verdict: An amazing story which is unfortunately very relevant, but let down by distracting performances from its leads. 2 stars. Burden is available to rent via Foxtel Store. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net
The Viennese Girl by Jenny Lecoat Allen & Unwin, $29.99
June 1940. The German army takes the Channel Island of Jersey unopposed. Jewish refugee Hedy finds herself trapped on the island with no option of escape. Forced to work for the Nazis, Hedy does all she can to hide her status and survive. But will the relationship she forms with German officer Kurt Neumann be her salvation, or her downfall? This is a powerful debut by Jenny Lecoat, which is based on a remarkable true story. Filled with drama, romance, tragedy, great characters and a fascinating historical setting, The Viennese Girl is a fantastic book that comes highly recommended.
Lionheart by Ben Kane Orion, $32.99
Ferdia is the son of an Irish lord, who was taken hostage by King Henry II of England. Raised at an English castle, one day he saves the life of the King’s son Richard, becoming his squire. Drawn to Richard’s charisma and bravery, he follows him into war. However, when Richard’s brothers plot against him, Ferdia finds himself in the midst of a bitter conflict for the throne. This is a compelling read that weaves an action-packed narrative around the early life of King Richard the Lionheart. An incredible novel from one of the world’s best historical fiction authors. 21

The gym is back open, awesome! This means you go straight back into heavy training, right? Not so fast; just because the gym is open doesn’t mean you should smash out the heavy weights, fast track your lifting or up your cardio training to level 10. You’ll need to ease back into training to prevent injury. It is great to be super motivated and pumped about your health and fitness, and please keep that motivation, but let’s be smart about easing back in: • For the first week, just do very light weights and practise the exercises that you will be doing. Take your time learning any new exercises to ensure you have the correct technique. • Do lots of reps to help the body start to wake up from not doing any weight-bearing exercise for a while.
WITH LEE CAMPBELL, CELEBRITY TRAINER, HEALTH & FITNESS PROFESSIONAL BFIRM.COM.AU
• Trial a few different training times; see what works best for you on different days. • Set up your new training program. Consider a one-onone session with a personal trainer to guide you and correct your techniques if necessary. • Set short-term goals and stick to your plan. • If you are going to do classes, get the timetable and check out different options. When heading back into the gym, you need to have a good understanding of what works best for you, and when you feel most comfortable there. I like the place to be just about empty and can use most of the equipment without much of a wait. If the equipment you want is being used, move to your next exercise and come back later.

Elegant and timeless Campbell 54A Jacka Crescent This newly built, Hamptons-style home in coveted Campbell is an architectural masterpiece. Hive director Josh Morrissey says architect Terry Ring has a “brilliant understanding” of the key elements of design, which are “all evident in this home”. “Terry Ring and Connected Projects have delivered a home that will remain as elegant and timeless as the designs that inspired it,” he says. This home, dubbed the ‘Statesman’, boasts four bedrooms, including an
opulent master suite with dressing room/walk-in robe. The adjoining ensuite is fit for a king, with underfloor heating, freestanding bath, two marble sinks and twin shower. The remaining three bedrooms are serviced by the stunning main bathroom, while the ground floor includes a separate powder room for the living spaces, which includes open plan kitchen, living and dining, as well as a separate lounge room – both with gas fireplaces. The chef’s kitchen is a Hamptons dream, with 40mm stone
benchtops, blackbutt breakfast bar and walk-in pantry. This flexibility of living options means this could be the perfect home for a number of buyers, according to Morrissey, such as a family or even downsizers. “The floor plan was designed as a functional space but also to give scale to a homely feel,” he says. Further luxury appointments include hickory timber flooring, feature skylights in the alfresco area, ducted zoned heating and cooling, double glazed windows and sliding doors, security system and fully landscaped gardens with 2,500L water tank. In close proximity to Campbell shops and nature reserves, Morrissey says there is a lot to love about this house: “to coin a real estate phrase, the street is established and tree-lined,
and surrounded by quality homes. The suburb itself is minutes to the City, Lake Burley Griffin and surrounded quality schooling options,” he says. “I think the use of light and scale add a level opulence to the home that can only be achieved by great design. “It feels like home.”

Weekly market wrap Seasonal low brought forward
During winter in Canberra, seasonally lower listing volumes occur. This is because Canberra homeowners have historically shown preference to sell their homes during the warmer months even though these periods have increased competition. Seller activity has decreased significantly since government restrictions prevented public auctions and open homes. Even as we have seen restrictions relax, weekly new established listings on Allhomes have reduced by 40.12% since the week ending 27 March. This has effectively brought forward seasonally lower listing volumes by nine weeks. On Saturday 6 June, Canberra recorded a preliminary auction clearance rate of 64%. Sales volume was exceptionally low, only nine properties sold on the day, collectively achieving a sales value of $8,400,000. For those who are choosing to sell now, results are mixed. SQM Research found the number of properties advertised for less than 60 days had decreased month on month to May.
Over the same period, the number of properties advertised for 60-180+ days increased. This indicates there is buyer demand, however it’s price sensitive, leaving ambitious sellers stranded and isolated from the market.
Incentives to buy pique buyer’s interest
From 4 June 2020 until 30 June 2021, eventual owner occupiers have significant incentives to consider purchasing new properties. The ACT Government has offered to waive stamp duty for eventual owner occupiers purchasing new single residential blocks of land. Owner occupiers buying off-plan apartments and townhouses with a purchase price up to $500,000 will also have their stamp duty waived or reduced by $11,400 for purchases between $500,001-$750,000. The Federal Government also announced an incentive to buy new. Their $25,000 HomeBuilder Grant will apply to people building or renovating their homes, providing they meet strict conditions.

WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST
Since the announcement of these incentives, I have been inundated with buyer enquiries; buyers who had intended to buy anyway but now feel some urgency to make their decision and those seeking to buy as the incentives will help them. Those suddenly seeking to buy are often unaware they need to have either a 5% cash deposit or a deposit bond of 10% to exchange contracts. Therefore, offering $25,000 solely to those meeting the current means testing is ineffective. In my opinion, both federal and ACT government incentives miss the mark in their application. On the basis they were put in place to stimulate the construction industry and keep construction workers employed, stamp duty concessions and HomeBuilder Grants should be applied for those buying investment properties and higher income earners.

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR June is going to be a very emotional month and sometimes, life requires patience. And often, our greatest breakthroughs come when we wait, pause and reflect. June is not a time to force yourself to power through your days. It’s a time of going inward and appreciating quieter moments.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY Values can change when Venus is retrograde, as can relationships, you suddenly discover things about your loved ones that you never realised before and your creative processes also become stuck. Venus turns direct on 25 June, helping you to move forward with newfound understandings of yourself and others.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE With six planets in retrograde this month, June is a time of personal transformation, re-evaluation and rejuvenation. They say change starts from within, and that holds strong right now. Venus’s retrograde period began on 13 May in the sign of Gemini,
celebrity birthday PETER DINKLAGE 11 June 1969 Peter is going to feel the urge to travel within his own country or overseas and the need to move freely and explore. He should take the time to do so as there will be mindbroadening experiences. New faces and new horizons will enable him to assess himself in a new light. The year ahead will be a very active one socially and career wise and he will find himself being the centre of attention. His success is going from strength to strength.

things can no longer be as they were, let it go as best you can.
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN
This month is a time to work out what makes you happy and to explore the inner work you feel called to do to bring your best self forward in service of something greater. A health concern for an older man or father figure will need to be addressed.
This month’s transit of Mercury opposite Pluto favours propaganda, conspiracy theories, manipulation, deceit and possibly even intimidation. The truth may be hidden by secrecy and illusion. It is reasonable not to take anything at face value and to investigate both sides of any issue or argument.
This month, the stars encourage you to take that time to figure out what you want. Continue to unwind out of your old habits. Continue to let go of the things and people that won’t get you any closer to where you really want to be.
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG Mercury opposite Pluto creates a battle of ideas, either within your own mind or between competitors. This is a good time for research, investigation and to uncover secrets. An intense build-up of mental energy require an outlet and this can turn into fierce debates and arguments.
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT Relationships that have been on rocky ground are going to be put under a great deal of strain. To have some harmony in relationships at an intimate level, you need to gain self-awareness of how you communicate and come
SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV You have a powerful ability to improve your communication style to improve close relationships. Be wary of being talked into things under pressure. Those who allow ego to control them may result in temporary gains and an inflated sense of superiority, but in the long run, such tactics will backfire.
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC Aspects of your loved ones that you haven’t seen before suddenly come to light and, if not dealt with positively, then separations or break-ups are likely. If something is telling you that
AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB What will you learn today from the person you will be tomorrow? What would like to say to your younger self right now, Aquarius? You’re reaching a turning point and are starting to appreciate the person you have grown into, as well as the ways you are still evolving.
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR Don’t avoid tending to the shakier areas of your life any longer. The good news is that the planets are trying to help you get these details in order so that your path can become clearer. The bad news is that you might need to muster some motivation.
