This week... From last summer’s bushfires, smokewaves and destructive hailstorm to the global COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions, 2020 has felt somewhat surreal so far. Flying to Queensland last week for my brother’s funeral was duly strange. Canberra Airport felt almost empty, with just two flights listed on both the arrivals and departures board and one café the only place open. We boarded a compact Dash-8 operating at 50% capacity with passengers placed in window seats, leaving aisle seats vacant for social distancing. Every passenger was required to complete a Queensland entry form. On arrival, our flight was met by two Defence personnel who directed us into lines for processing by Queensland Police (about eight officers present). Once approved, I wandered through a virtually deserted terminal where there appeared to be more officials than passengers. The return flight on Monday was still a Dash-8, now operating at 100% capacity – social distancing a distant memory – and notably more flights at both airports. Reasons to be grateful this past week include the CW team for keeping things ticking along smoothly in my absence, spending time with my parents and extended family in Queensland, the warmth of glorious Gold Coast winter sunshine, soaking rain, my nieces’ homegrown garden produce, the radiant heat of a crackling wood fire and fresh baked homemade pizza. Take care.

news Business confidence grows as restrictions ease Business confidence is growing as government restrictions ease in the ACT; however, there is still concern surrounding what a postCOVID future will look like for the local economy. Canberra Business Chamber CEO Graham Catt said since the Federal Government announced their threestep plan for re-opening Australia after COVID-19, and the States and Territories developed their own plans, “there has been an increase in business and consumer confidence”. “What business has wanted is to get back to business, to be trading again and getting people back into jobs,” Mr Catt said. However, he acknowledged it is going to take time for business to recover, especially as for some sectors it isn’t just COVID-19 they are recovering from. He said sectors like hospitality and tourism “have been dealing with tough conditions since December last year”. “When they were emerging from the bushfires, smoke, and hail damage it was only a few weeks
before COVID restrictions,” Mr Catt said, adding it was many of those sectors – retail, hospitality and tourism – thatwere the first to be restricted. According to the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s COVID-19 Business Conditions Survey Report 2020 2nd Edition, business revenue has been increasingly impacted by COVID-19 restrictions “with almost 40% of businesses experiencing an 80% decline and over 80% experiencing a decline of over 25% relative to normal for this time of the year”. Despite the decline in revenue, Mr Catt said the number of businesses that have closed down locally is relatively low. He attributes this to government assistance, however is concerned a large number of operators may face closure once the support ceases. This concern is also reflected in this year’s Small Business Recovery research commissioned by American Express. According to the research, 80% of
Australian small business owners are optimistic their business will survive the COVID-19 pandemic; however, if trade doesn’t pick up quickly enough, about half (52%) fear for their longterm survival. Canberra businesses are meeting over the next two weeks to map out the shape of the local economy in the post-COVID era. The Canberra Business Chamber is convening a series of in-depth forums with the Territory’s other major industry associations, the first of which was held on Friday 5 June. Key issues raised at the first forum included the need for ongoing cashflow for businesses to survive in the post-COVID environment, JobKeeper continuation, ensuring the ACT economy remains competitive, and more support for start-ups and innovation, as well as the ACT tourism sector. A consistent theme has been the risk for many businesses of “falling off a cliff” when support runs out and they are left without a viable operation. The results will be collated and

Legislation recognises the gift of life Families of organ and tissue donors will have the opportunity to seek formal acknowledgement of their loved one’s lifesaving gift thanks to new legislation recently passed in the ACT Legislative Assembly. The Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration (Tissue Donor Acknowledgment) Amendment Bill 2020 creates a new section, 38A, in the Births Deaths and Marriages Registration Act to give next of kin the opportunity to request that their deceased loved one be recognised as a tissue donor on their death certificate. Member for Ginninderra, Tara Cheyne MLA, who presented the bill in February, said many donor families and advocates in the ACT and across Australia had expressed to her that there were few tangible opportunities to formally acknowledge the significance of organ and tissue donation. 8
canberraweekly.com.au
Speaking in the Assembly on 21 May, Ms Cheyne said, “for some families whose loved ones in death gave the ultimate gift, this simple gesture will mean the world”. “A death certificate is, in some ways, the formal summation of someone’s life. It contains the vital statistics about a person. It follows, then, that it should accurately reflect their final, most generous act,” she said. DonateLife ACT Agency manager, Nadia Burkolter, welcomed the bill as providing a “unique opportunity to more formally recognise the importance of the gift of donation and to acknowledge this generous and selfless decision of donors and their families”. For Helen Day, who was referenced by Ms Cheyne in her speech to the Assembly, the recognition is something she will seek for her son, Stewart Orme.
Mr Orme died in a motorcycle accident in Canberra in 2012, four days shy of his 24th birthday. Ms Day said while her son hadn’t registered for organ donation, “I knew that he had dedicated his life to helping people … and I knew how strongly he felt about organ donation”. She said it is important for families to have a conversation about organ donation as “there’s nothing worse than being put in that situation. I was hoping for a miracle that he would survive”. Ultimately, Ms Day’s decision helped six others. “Stewart was never someone that wanted light shone on him for the work that he did … through him, those people are still able to, in some way, carry out his work in helping people.” The amended bill, which will come into effect within the next
12 months, will allow a next of kin to request in writing (and with verifying information) that the ACT Registrar General include in the Death Register a statement that their loved one was a tissue donor (with “tissue” being the technical term for both organs and tissue). The family can then apply for a death certificate that recognises their loved one as a tissue donor. Ms Cheyne said requesting formal acknowledgement was optional and not time limited. “Families will be able to make the written request at any time, but it will be a matter for each family to decide for themselves if it’s something that works for them,” she said. “It also means that families whose deceased loved one was an organ or tissue donor before the legislation comes into effect will have this opportunity, too.” - Allison Turnbull

ACT Road Safety Minister, Shane Rattenbury, said the ‘smiley face’ road sign trial has highlighted the power of positive reinforcement in encouraging Canberra drivers to slow down. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
Drivers slow down for a smile It seems Canberra motorists are keen to see ‘smiley face’ road signs put on a happy face with an evaluation of the smiley face road sign trial reporting success in slowing down drivers. The trial of the smiley face road signs, which aim to reduce speeding by reinforcing positive driver behaviour, ran from
February 2018 until October 2019. Five signs were rotated around 17 different residential locations in the ACT, capturing about four million motorists. The data from each site shows that, no matter what speed limit, road classification, or school or non-school zone, the visual reminder provided by the signs
has generally reduced speeds and decreased the number of motorists travelling over the speed limit. According to the data, the signs have reduced travelling speeds by between 0.4-12.2 km/h; the presence of the signs has resulted in a marked increase in the percentage of motorists travelling at or below the legal speed limit of the road; and the majority of motorists continued to observe the signs’ messaging over the entire period of their installation, despite the signs being reminder signs only and therefore not enforceable. ACT Minister for Road Safety, Shane Rattenbury, said he is pleased the signs have been a success in encouraging ACT drivers to be more aware of their travelling speed. “The cameras are designed to provide positive reinforcement to people who are obeying the speed limits and driving safely, or
provide clear feedback when they are not,” Mr Rattenbury said. “This positive approach to road safety has helped residential streets be safer by reminding people to slow down.” The trial was funded by a $40,000 Road Safety Community Grant with additional funding provided by Transport Canberra and City Services. Mr Rattenbury said given the success of the signs, the ACT Government is committing a further $20,000 from the Road Safety Fund to expand the project. Recommendations from the evaluation report also suggest scope for provision of high-speed data to ACT Policing to inform their enforcement activities. The Justice and Community Safety Directorate will also soon develop a community awareness campaign focusing on safe speeds, to support the existing speed reduction initiatives.

Some of the bravest, most cold-tolerant Canberrans will still plunge into Lake Burley Griffin from Yarralumla Bay on the shortest day of the year, however, this year’s Ian Lindeman Memorial Winter Solstice Swim will be capped at just two participants. But that’s not the only way this year’s iteration will be different to the last. More importantly, Ian Lindeman, who founded the event in 2017, passed away on 20 November 2019 from liver cancer. “He built up the event, and had steely determination as well as a heart of gold … He was really looking on his deathbed for it to be handed over and we were very happy to continue,” said Winter Solstice Swim chairperson, Ben Johnston. “He rang me, ‘Ben, I’ll be dead next week’ … it was heartbreaking, and I take it very personally,” Mr Johnston said. In its first three years, the event grew exponentially. Last year, 170 participants toughed it out and buffed it out in minus-threedegree weather. “We were looking this year to get around 350, maybe 400 people, which would get us to the limits of this area or close to, and then everything just got turned upside down,” Mr Johnston said. Two originals from the first swim, Peter Lindeman and Geoff Arney, were chosen to be the flag‘barers’ for this year’s event. “There were actually no applications possible to have public events around the lake (at the time); it actually just wasn’t something you could do,” Mr Johnston said. “For the purposes of getting it to happen, I rebranded it as a photoshoot, which seemed to satisfy the regulatory authorities. “We’re still having to get a nudity instrument passed by the Minister, which takes effect for one hour only on 21 June.” With rain predicted for that
morning, he said it would keep the temperature up to a “balmy” three degrees, compared to the minus three-degree weather the swimmers braved in 2019. “It should be interesting with the bagpiper playing under an umbrella, we might have to hold it for him,” Mr Johnston smiled. According to Mr Johnston, everyone who participates in the event walks away having enjoyed an “amazing experience”. “I’ve just watched that grow as the numbers grow, and that sense of being part of something happening … the camaraderie that engenders is huge. “The whole idea with the swim is that you refresh your soul and get a sense of renewal from washing away the negative energy and starting the new solar year afresh. “We’ll do that in a symbolic way this year, but obviously the biggest outcome that Ian wanted with the swim is to raise awareness,” Mr Johnston said. This year, 100% of all donations will go to Lifeline Canberra to support the community’s hardworking mental health support workers. As of 16 June, Mr Johnston estimated they had raised $3,000. Lifeline Canberra CEO Carrie Leeson said their telephone crisis support service has detected heightened levels of anxiety and stress throughout the community of late. “That is something that the crisis supporters have had to come to terms with; it’s almost like we’re all living in a Lifeline call at the moment,” Ms Leeson said. “To maintain their wellbeing, to be able to provide a highly effective service to an individual who needs it, has required quite a lot of additional supervision and investment.” To donate or for more information, visit wintersolsticecharityswim.com

news $17 million data centre set for Canberra Macquarie Telecom Group have announced a $17 million investment into building stage one of a second data centre in Canberra. Building of Intellicentre 5 (IC5) will begin in July and will create temporary and permanent roles across cyber-security, engineering and construction. The data centre will be at the secure location of the company’s first Canberra-based data centre and is set to be complete by December. Macquarie Government managing director Aidan Tudehope said the announcement follows a $20 million cyber-security contract with the Australian Taxation Office. “Risk to Government of a cyber breach and the dependency on cloud services are at an all-time high – we’re not just going to return to the ‘norm’ after this pandemic and facilities of this calibre are an essential requirement
in Canberra,” he said. “Government departments need to have clarity over data sovereignty – who controls the data, where does it reside, and who has access. We cover these bases by ensuring Australian control and access only by Australian Government-cleared specialists.” Macquarie Telecom Group have 18 years of experience providing cyber-security solutions to Australian governments, with 42% of federal agencies using its services. ACT Liberal Senator Zed Seselja backed the development saying it would build the nation’s economy following the pandemic. “IC5 and Macquarie’s investment into Australia’s data centre ecosystem will not only create valuable jobs but build sovereign security skills and capabilities in what has become a vital industry for our nation,” he said.
Icon Water holds prices Recognising the impact of COVID-19 on customers and the community, Icon Water has decided to freeze their combined water and sewerage price for 2020-21. The price freeze means that a typical household consuming 200 kilolitres of water per year will save $18 off the total water and sewerage bill that Icon Water could
have charged for 2020-21. The decision was announced on 12 June and coincided with the release of the ACT Independent Competition and Regulatory Commission’s annual update on the maximum prices that Icon Water can charge for its regulated water and sewerage services from 1 July 2020.
ACT Government freezes fees The ACT Government has announced a range of government fees will not increase in the 2020-21 financial year, in recognition of financial pressure from the impact of COVID-19. Some of the fees and charges which will be frozen at current 2019-20 levels, include: Birth, death and marriage registrations fees; building fees; domestic animal fees; emergencies fees; land title fees; planning and development fees; public health fees; security industry
fees; and vehicle registration fees. Several fees and charges were already frozen at 2019-20 levels or waived as part of the government’s Economic Survival Package announced in March. These fees will remain fixed at the 2019-20 level for 2020-21. Inquiry recommends ‘woman-centred’ care An inquiry into maternity services in the ACT has made 74 recommendations with an overarching ethos that maternity services and models of care should at all times be woman-centred. The Standing Committee on Health, Ageing and Community Services tabled the wide-ranging report earlier this month. Recommendations include that the ACT Government prioritise a feasibility study to examine the establishment of a perinatal hospice facility to provide perinatal services and care to relevant women, their babies and families; a day-stay lactation clinic for the ACT; and that the ACT
Government establish an official milk bank for the ACT. The Committee also recommended the ACT Government establish planned home birth as an ongoing birth option (model of care) for women in the ACT, and implement the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation’s Mandated Minimum Nurse/Midwife to Patient Ratios Framework for the safe management of maternity workloads across publicly funded maternity services.

$3,000 donation for Calvary Auxiliary The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted on the fundraising efforts of the Calvary Auxiliary however a donation of $3,000 from Barmco Mana McMurray (BMM) has gone a long way towards covering the shortfall experienced by the Auxiliary. BMM provide specialist health infrastructure engineering consultancy at both Calvary Hospital and Canberra Health Services. “At both settings we have seen how valuable volunteers are in enhancing patient services and fundraising for equipment and other items,” BMM Director Steve Wheelhouse said. “The current COVID-19 emergency has affected many charities and volunteer organisations badly with donations and fund raising opportunities now drastically reduced when compared to the normally difficult circumstances. BMM are proud to donate $3,000 to the Calvary Auxiliary as part of our ongoing commitment to the community we live and work in.”

Nominate a top Aussie Nominations for the 2021 Australian of the Year Awards are currently open and it’s time to nominate someone you admire for the titles of Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year and Australia’s Local Hero. National Australia Day Council CEO Karlie Brand said, “there are always so many people doing amazing things in our country”. “This year, perhaps more than any other since the awards began in 1960, we’ve seen Australians overcome many adversities, help each other in times of crisis and carry out acts of bravery, leadership and kindness on a daily basis,” Ms Brand said. “It only takes one nomination for someone to be considered for the awards, but a nomination must be submitted for a person in order for them to be in the running.” Nominating is easy and can be done online at australianoftheyear.org.au; nominations will close at midnight 31 July 2020.

Winter warmers
Winter has well and truly arrived – warm up with these delicious recipes brought to you by food writer Libby Kimber.
Spiced corn fritters Recipe extract from Lara Lee’s Coconut & Sambal, Bloomsbury, available now. 4 corn-on-the-cob or 350g canned or frozen sweetcorn kernels 1 Tbsp sunflower oil, plus extra for deep-frying 6cm piece of ginger (about 30g), peeled and thinly sliced 6 garlic cloves, peeled and thinly sliced 2 long red chillies, thinly sliced 2 small banana shallots or 4 Thai shallots, peeled and thinly sliced 2 large spring onions, thinly sliced 5 kaffir lime leaves (optional), stems removed, very thinly sliced
Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat. Add the ginger, garlic, chillies and shallots and fry, stirring, for 10 minutes. Blend to a medium-fine paste in a small food processor with the spring onions and kaffir lime leaves, if using. Mix the spice paste with the corn kernels in a bowl and add the coriander, cumin, salt, pepper and eggs. Stir well to combine, then add the cornflour. Fill a deep saucepan one-third full with oil. Heat the oil to 180°C. (If you do not have a kitchen thermometer, check the oil is at temperature by adding a cube of bread; it should turn golden in 15 seconds.) Carefully drop a dessert spoonful of the batter into the hot oil – it should settle into a roughly circular shape. Repeat to make 6-8 fritters, without overcrowding the pan. Fry until golden all over, about 4 minutes. Test one to ensure it is cooked through. Transfer to a tray lined with paper towels to drain. Repeat to use up all the mixture, topping up the oil if needed. Serve immediately, with sambal or chilli sauce to dip, if using.
Variation: Pan-fried corn fritters Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan. Heat 4 tablespoons of oil in a large frying pan over a high heat until the oil shimmers. Add spoonfuls of the corn mixture to the oil, flattening them lightly. Turn over after 2-3 minutes – they should be golden all over. Transfer to a baking tray lined with baking parchment and cook in the oven for 5-10 minutes – test one to ensure it is cooked through. Drain any excess oil on paper towels and serve.
2 eggs, beaten 6 Tbsp cornflour Tomato sambal Fresh tomato and basil dabu-dabu or sriracha chilli sauce, to serve (optional)
Serves 4 800g lamb forequarter chops (you can also use lamb leg or shoulder) 1 carrot, diced
If using fresh corn, remove the outer husk and threads, then carefully slice down the outside of the cob with a knife, as close to the core as possible, to remove the kernels. Set them aside.

Remove and set aside. Using the same dish, add the onion, carrot, garlic and bay leaf and cook for 2 minutes, stirring. Add the browned lamb, olives, paprika, sugar, mushrooms, tomato and stock. Check seasoning, reduce heat to low and simmer for 2 hours. Cook the pappardelle as per packet instructions. Serve with the stew, fresh basil and parmesan.

The perfect pairing While you certainly don’t have to pair your wines with your food, it can make for a fun (and delicious) addition to your dinner party. Good Pair Days sommelier Banjo Harris Plane says there are a few golden pairings that will make both your food and wine sing:
18
Acidic food
Spicy food
Pair with: acidic wine Drops to try: pinot noir, sangiovese or shiraz Banjo says a dish that’s high in acidity (like pizza, or anything tomato or lemon-based) can turn rich, fruity wines into a drop that’s “flabby and lifeless”. “You can still drink wines across the richness profile as this is often independent of its acid profile; one useful guideline is to look at the types of wine favoured in the countries the food originates from,” he says, citing the Italians’ love for sangiovese as a match for pizza and pasta.
Pair with: slightly sweet wines Drop to try: off-dry riesling According to Banjo, alcohol is a natural solvent of chilli acid so wine, with an alcohol content of 9%-14%, works to stop the burn in its tracks more effectively than beer. He says the residual sugar of a slightly sweet wine dulls the heat, allowing you to taste the dish’s underlying flavours. “As a bonus, the wine no longer tastes as sweet, so it’s a winner even for people who don’t like sweet wines.”
canberraweekly.com.au
Sweet food Pair with: sweet wines Drops to try: port, dessert wine or sweet sparkling Sweet desserts will overpower almost all non-sweet white wines, a pairing Banjo says will result in either a clash of flavours or a
lifeless wine. He says the sweeton-sweet pairing will have sugar lovers in food heaven, while those without a sweet tooth might consider “skipping the wine with dessert or ordering the cheese platter instead”.

Bottlebrush Creek by Maya Linnell
The Broken Ones by Ren Richards
Allen & Unwin, $29.99
Viper, $29.99
Bottlebrush Creek is the follow-up novel to Maya Linnell’s charming debut, Wildflower Ridge. Busy young mum Angie McIntyre is desperately trying to juggle her work and volunteer commitments while parenting her two-yearold daughter. When the opportunity to take on a cottage renovation project comes along, Angie jumps at it, even though it means moving to a 200-acre property right next door to her boyfriend’s difficult parents in rural south-west Victoria. This enjoyable novel mixes romance, family drama and renovation high jinks, against a nicely described farm setting. Fans of Maya’s first novel will keenly enjoy this latest outing.
Much darker is The Broken Ones by Ren Richards. Nell Way is a popular true crime writer who has a knack for humanising horrific murderers. At the start of the book she is in a good place with a loving boyfriend and a successful career. However, as she begins interviewing her next project, Easter Hamblin, the murdering half of a formerly conjoined pair of twins, her life begins to unravel. For it seems that someone knows about Nell’s own secret past and they are using that knowledge to threaten her peaceful existence. This is a good, twisty thriller with plenty of surprises and some very dark moments.
The Safe Place by Anna Downes Affirm, $32.99
Australian author Anna Downes makes a promising debut with The Safe Place. When struggling actress Emily is fired from her job, she is unexpectedly thrown a lifeline. Despite some reservations, she agrees to be the housekeeper for Scott, his wife Nina, and their daughter Aurelia at their remote estate on the coast of France. But when the seemingly idyllic setting turns sinister, she realises that her employers have some deadly secrets and that they will do anything to protect their seemingly perfect life. There is some predictability about the plot, but Downes keeps it moving along nicely. A good literary escape from Canberra’s cold winter.

The eyes have it They are the window to the soul, so ensure your eye area is looking its best! WITH FASHION & BEAUTY EDITOR, LIBBY KIMBER
Eye creams
While the jury is still out on whether eye creams are a necessity – Go-To Skincare’s Zoë Foster Blake is famously anti-eye cream – Sukin’s Cathy Galileos says they are “essential”. She says the eye is surrounded by delicate skin, much thinner than the rest of the face, and so regular use of an eye cream or a serum to keep the area plump and supple is a must! Similarly, Ella Baché’s Gina Cook says we should be treating the eye area individually from the rest of the face: “We don’t have any oil glands under our eyes and the skin is much more sensitive than anywhere else on our face, that’s why we suggest using lighter products around the eyes to avoid causing skin issues like milia.”
Makeup tips Rose quartz face roller $29.95 Sportsgirl
Biossance eye cream $89 sephora.com.au
Of course, the number one product for the under-eye area is concealer. Our top tip is to choose a creamy formula that allows you to build coverage where you need it – thicker formulas can ‘cake’ and settle into the lines of your face. Biologi’s dermal specialist Lucy Macdougald says to avoid pink and red eye shadows, as they can actually make you look more tired. “Apply some nude eye liner on the inner rims of your eyes, this is similar to the white eyeliner trick but just looks less harsh,” she says. “Lining eyes with white or nude can make eyes appear larger and give the illusion of whiter eyes.”
Dark circles and puffiness
The age-old indicators of a bad night’s sleep can be hard to keep at bay. Macdougald suggests an easy trick for the mornings: “Grab two teaspoons out of the kitchen drawer, place them in the fridge for a few minutes and then place them curved side in on your eyes,” she says. “Gently massage the spoons on this area, allowing the cold temperature to tighten swollen skin and stimulating lymphatic drainage which works to eliminate fluid build-up around your eyes.” This can also be done with a face roller: “Place the jade roller in the fridge and then apply a small amount of serum to the face, slowly rolling the jade roller in an upward motion.” She recommends investing in a Vitamin C serum, which can help reduce the appearance of dark circles, and suggests taking stock of your lifestyle to see if there are any contributing factors there such as lack of or interrupted sleep, diet, and alcohol and caffeine consumption. “Alcohol and caffeine can also affect the eye area because they both cause dehydration and make dark circles more obvious,” she says. “And the humble salt can cause your body to retain fluid which can cause puffi ness and under eye bags.”

wellbeing
Winter wisdom: the power of sleep and nourishment In traditional healing modalities like traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, living in harmony with the seasons is considered one of the keys to sustained wellbeing. Much of the wisdom from these traditional approaches is derived from a close observation of the natural environment. The shorter days of winter, whilst not exactly a time to hibernate, are nevertheless an invitation to work less and rest more. If you ever go camping, you’ll have noticed when it gets dark that your mind automatically turns to dinner and bed, whereas in an urban environment, where we’re constantly stimulated, it’s easy to miss these basic natural cues.
In TCM, each season has an organ system that is associated with it. Winter is the season where the kidneys are paramount. I like to describe the kidneys as the batteries of the body. What recharges our batteries is quality sleep. How do you know if you’re getting quality sleep? Simple, you wake up feeling rested. Interestingly, people with chronic fatigue often have prolonged sleep but because it’s of poor quality, they are still exhausted. If you are rested, then you’re not reliant on stimulants like caffeine to pep you up in the mornings or sugar to give you a boost throughout the day. It’s pretty apparent that most people are chronically tired and under slept and would not function without the crutch of stimulants. It doesn’t have to be that way. Unless you’re a shift worker or a parent of young children, you probably could get to bed an hour earlier and give your body a chance to ‘recharge’. As well as shorter days, the other defining characteristic of winter is, of course, the cold weather, which calls for the balancing effect of warming foods like soups and stews, as well as methods where food is cooked for long periods of time. Cold shuts

down function so use warming foods to help keep the digestion in balance and the ‘internal fire’ or metabolism buoyant. Dust off the slow cooker, try slow roasting joints of meat or making your own stocks or bone broth for extra nourishment. You can also try adding warming herbs and spices like ginger, garlic and cinnamon as well as fragrant culinary herbs like thyme and rosemary to enhance the effect. Foods like pumpkin, potatoes, root vegetables, winter greens, carrots, cabbage, mushrooms, apples and pears are all considered beneficial in winter. If you heed the humble call of winter to slow down and be nourished, then come spring you’ll emerge deeply refreshed and with an abundance of energy for life. in the garden WITH HORTICULTURIST TRACEY BOOL traceyboolgardenwriter.com
A large raised bed in Tinus and Levi’s recently renovated backyard in Evatt, where COR-TEN steel edging has been used to excellent effect.
The perfect mix of exotics and natives Tinus, a professional horticulturist and garden designer, and his partner Levi, renovated their property in Evatt two years ago. Only a few original plants remain on the 738sqm block, including a variegated Pittosporum,
two sasanqua Camellias and a striking forest pansy. In the back yard, the curved garden beds are raised to reduce the slope and create depth and interest. They have been filled with soil from
Zycon Building
excavations carried out elsewhere in the yard, as well as with quality imported topsoil. A mulch of forest litter, used to increase fertility, has been topped with a coarse bark layer to prevent compaction and reduce maintenance. The beds have been edged with COR-TEN steel, a durable and modern product which oxidises as it ages, turning a deep rusty red. The sweeping paths in both the back and front yards have a compacted base layer of pea-sized pebbles and a top layer of larger pebbles, for aesthetics. There is a harmonious collection of both native and exotic plants. In the back yard, Tinus has created a foliage palette of purples, reds, limes, and blues (to connect the garden to the grey of the house). Flowers appear year-round and cover a range of shapes and sizes. Tinus has a beautiful collection of five Magnolia species, 18 varieties of Camellia, and eight varieties of Maple. Levi collects succulents, cacti and bonsais, the latter of which are seamlessly displayed in a Zen garden at the side of the house. A boundary planting of Magnolia grandiflora ‘Exmouth’ has been used for privacy and to create depth in the garden. Once suitably established, Tinus will maintain the hedge using pleaching technique. Two raised tank planters are located at the back of the house for
growing seasonal vegetables – one is rejuvenated with compost and manure from the chook house while the other is in use. Tinus has created a relaxed modern style in the front yard; a semiformal look which is considerably lower maintenance than more structured formal gardens. The main bed has been raised and is edged with durable aluminium strips. A gabion wall effectively separates the garden from the driveway. A colour combination of reds, silvers and limes (to connect both the front and back yards) has been used. Tinus will hedge the Camellia and Grevillea ‘Lady O’ plantings once they are more established to give structure. Irrigation is largely carried out using drippers and with some hand watering. Tinus says he finds drippers especially useful for cool climate native plants as it prevents the creation of humidity. All prunings, lawn clippings and any other organic garden and kitchen waste are composted and re-used in the garden – or devoured by the chickens. Any pest outbreaks are controlled using natural and cultural methods. For instance, scale and aphids are readily eaten by resident birdlife and beneficial insects such as lady beetles. Tinus also carries out regular snail patrol in the evenings when they are active.

Before and after: Bedroom bliss
Bedrooms are the ideal space to reset and relax. If you’re looking to create a serene retreat, why not take some inspiration from interior stylist Jono Fleming who recently updated the bedroom at his farm in rural NSW.
BEFORE: The unfinished bedroom featured the challenge of working around teal walls and fitted wall lights that couldn’t be moved.
AFTER: With a few simple design techniques, such as the clever use of colour and layering, Jono created a serene bedroom retreat.
The key to pulling this look together was to let certain colours shine and the rest to sit quietly and complement them. The teal on the walls and the ochre of the bedhead and pillows pair perfectly together; the neutrals and navy tones then act as support to these colours. Here Jono explains how he created his bedroom bliss: • To enhance the views of the pine forest outside, I chose a darker colour for the walls,
the deep moody teal. It makes the room feel cosy, an escape no matter what time of the year. • The wall colour dictated a lot of choices from the ground up, such as the navy striped rug to not only complement the teal but also give the room a nice textural feeling underfoot. • I splurged on a custom bedhead by Heatherly Design to anchor the room.

It was curved at the corners to accommodate the fixed handblown glass wall lights (by Articolo) that couldn’t be moved. I chose an upholstered fabric in a painterly mustard weave to contrast the teal walls and enhance the stripes that featured on other soft furnishings. I layered the soft linen bedding with velvet pillowcases so the bed looks plush. Each night it feels like a holiday at home! All the cushions in the farmhouse were handmade by my mum! She sewed over 100 cushions in total by scouring fabric remnant stores for textural fabrics with faint lines in neutral colours. She then made them up into amazing cushions. Bedside tables selected are classic, not too fussy and timeless whilst the black helps them disappear. I chose a Kara Rosenlund print to help tie all the moody colours together whilst the pops of yellow connect to the bedhead. Kara’s work is pure storytelling and she has such a way of transporting you to a moment and a mood. For small décor ideas, I love using sculptural vases, the Roman head from H&M home is paired with the stumpy vase from Clay Canoe. These pieces sit in contrast with each other but don’t clash. Choosing the right rug A well-chosen rug has the power to fully resolve a room and pull together many of the other decorating elements – the palette, furniture styles, mood, even the composition of space. For those looking for their dream rug, Carpet Court has just launched a customisable rug range service featuring six pile styles and 18 colours. Prices start from $2,820 (2m x 3m size). So how do you find the right rug for your space? Heather Nette King, interior stylist and Carpet Court style ambassador, shares her five top tips: 1. Size: To help you determine the right sized rug for your space, first measure the area. It’s best to have furniture approximately 15cm in from the edge of the rug. 2. Colour: Consider your existing colour scheme. For highly textured interiors, turn to creams and pale neutrals. For contemporary interiors, look to deep charcoals to add ambience. 3. Shape: Use the shape of a rug to elevate the space. Use a rectangular rug under long dining tables or hallways, and a circular rug under round tables. 4. Style: Choose a comforting pile style for the bedroom and tighter, more robust styles for high traffic areas such as a living room. 5. Edges: Fabric edges on rugs work best in spaces where it is serving a defined purpose, such as a hallway, or underneath a bed. A concealed edge on a rug works in a large, open-plan area.

Modern magnificence Yarralumla 16 Schlich Street Set in Canberra’s blue-ribbon suburb of Yarralumla, this chic and contemporary home is just one of 33 in the suburb with direct frontage to Lake Burley Griffin, enjoying views across the reserve to the shore. Independent Gungahlin senior sales agent Michael Wang says this home won the HIA ‘custom house of the year’ award in 1993 and has been recently updated with myriad modern design features and luxury inclusions.
“It had a full renovation 18 months ago, with an extension,” he says. Designed for entertainers, the meals and family space can accommodate 20 people, with the adjoining balcony perfect for warmer nights. The sleek and stylish kitchen will make preparation a breeze: it boasts a 900mm induction cooktop, integrated fridge/freezer and dishwasher, stone waterfall benchtops and an enviable butler’s
pantry with copious amounts of storage, a sink, oven and second cooktop. The large island bench is the perfect place for your morning coffee or drinks with friends – don’t forget about the under-house wine cellar. With multiple living areas both inside and out, Wang says this home is ideal for those with a “busy lifestyle or multi-generational living”. The master suite includes a walk-in robe and ensuite, while the remaining four bedrooms, three on the lower level, include robes and are serviced by the stunning main bathroom. Wang says the home, which includes family, living and rumpus rooms, as well as a formal dining room, “is fitted with every inclusion
imaginable”, including American oak herringbone floors, 6.2m-high ceilings, electric fireplace, and an auto-irrigation system. Take in the breathtaking suburb and lake views from the balconies and expansive, architectural windows.

property news
Weekly market wrap Positive buyer sentiment bolsters market Canberra’s property market has put COVID-19 in its rear-view mirror, as positive sentiment roars back into the market. Both established and new markets are showing signs that good buying opportunities in April are now just a distant memory. Auction results from last weekend (Saturday 13 June) show strong buyer demand for established dwellings. Domain’s preliminary auction clearance rate in Canberra was 70%, up 26% compared to the same time last year. There were six more auctions scheduled than the week prior and the clearance rate was up 13%. All properties proceeding to auction (none were withdrawn prior) clearly shows both buyers and sellers are confidently making decisions in current market conditions. Last week recorded an increase in the number of established properties advertised for the first time on Allhomes, up 24% week on week. Astute sellers have noticed the low stock environment creates opportunities to capitalise on strong buyer demand. Time will tell if increased listing activity is sustained.
Incentives drive demand for new homes, despite less activity Interestingly, even with the Federal and ACT Governments providing significant incentives
for people to buy new properties, there was less developer and project marketing activity on Allhomes. The number of project listings appearing as new reduced by one, week on week, while demand for new dwellings has increased significantly since 4 June. Those who already had intentions to buy, face competition from a wave of people who are now able to buy with the new incentives or are looking to buy as the financial benefit is too good to pass up. To illustrate how strong buyer demand has become, in 72 hours commencing at 7.30am on Saturday 13 June, I received deposits on six properties I was selling; half were investors seeking medium-density apartments and townhouses to expand their portfolios. I expect demand to remain for some time, potentially increasing significantly once ACT Revenue provides clarity on the definitions how the HomeBuilder Scheme is to be applied. Some ambitious developers with non-qualifying stock have started offering equivalent or larger cash rebates than the HomeBuilder Grant. This is a case of buyer beware as the incentive is built into the price unlike other projects where lack of changes to pricing show the grant and stamp duty discounts can be received as genuine benefits to buyers. Australian Bureau of Statistics new dwelling approvals data showed there were 907 approvals
WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST
during April. Monthly new dwelling approvals data is very lumpy, however, recording a 6.8% quarterly increase to April. On an annual basis, new dwelling approvals are down 27.7%, a significant reduction in supply. The last 11 weeks have shown how resilient property values are in Canberra. Reduced stock levels combined with huge increases in buyer demand make it important for those seeking to own property to be decisive. Add exceptionally low costs of borrowing into the mix and we start to see positive signs of residential property heading into a growth cycle.
Weekly Facebook Live series Each Saturday at 9am I host a Facebook Live for Canberra Weekly to answer your property questions. This week’s topic is ‘things to consider when selling your home’. You can send through questions in advance via email to hello@canberrapropertypodcast.com.au with ‘Facebook Live’ in the subject line, and tune in via the Canberra Weekly Facebook page.
Geocon launches ‘Nightfall’ Developer Geocon has launched Nightfall, the third and final stage of the Republic Precinct development in Belconnen. It will include 334 apartments, as well as 12 retail spaces on the ground floor. Geocon managing director, Nick Georgalis, said Nightfall, located on the southern edge of Lake Ginninderra, will appeal to “investors, young professionals and students”. “Nightfall is Geocon’s first release in more
than a year and we have already had huge interest from buyers, many who have been waiting patiently for quality stock in the Belconnen Town Centre,” he said. Each Nightfall apartment will include features such as stone benchtops and Smeg appliances, with varied floor plans available, while the building will be home to a private entertaining space with a barbecue area, kitchen and dining room. Geocon says prices will start at $295,900.
ACT has ‘happiest’ sellers A survey conducted by real estate agent review site, RateMyAgent, has found Canberrans are the happiest sellers in the country, with 45% of respondents saying they were satisfied with the sale price of their homes. The ACT was sitting in equal-second place for seller satisfaction, alongside NSW and behind 34

Tasmania, before COVID-19. The 20,000 survey responses show the ACT has risen to number one in the country, after Tasmania’s sellers experienced a sharp decline in satisfaction after the virus hit. The ACT’s seller satisfaction dropped 1% from January to April this year.
Geocon has announced the third and final stage of the Republic Precinct development in Belconnen. Nightfall, the company’s first release in over a year, will include 334 apartments and 12 retail spaces. Artist’s impression.

Privacy and proximity Griffith 14/8 Giles Street
This private, ground level apartment in Griffith is the perfect Inner South sanctuary, nestled behind a courtyard wall and shaded by the trees lining the street outside. “One-bedroom apartments with such wonderfully established ground floor courtyards are a rare find in today’s market,” says LJ Hooker Dickson sales agent, Ryan Hedley.
He says the property “perfectly encapsulates” indoor-outdoor living and flow. “The main bedroom also opens out to the picturesque courtyard, giving you a wonderful view to wake up to each and every morning.” Perfect for a number of buyers, including first-home buyers looking to break into the area, the apartment features open plan living, a large bedroom with built-in robe and the large outdoor courtyard. The kitchen overlooks the living and dining area, with a view out to the garden. Hedley says the property includes a “brand new reverse cycle system, an expansive laundry room and has been freshly painted for sale”. The apartment also boasts its own undercover park, located directly at the door.
Hedley says the location of this private gem is unbeatable, within walking distance to a number of food and shopping precincts and closer still to Manuka Oval and Telopea Park. “The property is ideally located on the edge of Griffith and Kingston and has you in walking distance of Manuka shopping precinct and Kingston foreshore,” he says. “This is a perfect property for both the downsizer who appreciates looking after a beautiful garden, as
well as the first-time home buyer who would like to enter the market with something a little different.”

My favourite things FITNESS TRACKER A combination of high stress and unlucky genetics led to my having a heart attack at age 40. I bought my first fitness tracker the day I got out of the hospital. I’m obsessed with getting 10,000 steps per day. I have been known to pace my house if I’m just a few steps under.
INDIGENOUS-INSPIRED FASHION
Photo Kerrie Brewer
I love supporting Indigenous artists and designers. I feel so proud to be Australian when I wear traditional colours and patterns. These earrings are by Garigarra Mundine. They make me feel powerful.
BROOMS
Cindy Reese Mitchell
Brooms have an important place in my culture. I find sweeping the floor the most relaxing thing ever. I even jumped the broom when I got married! When I saw this painting by Vee Malnar on exhibition at the Belconnen Arts Centre, I had to own it.
2020 ACT Woman of the Year
Named the 2020 ACT Woman of the Year earlier this year, Cindy Reese Mitchell is the founding Chief Executive Officer of the Mill House Ventures. Having migrated to Australia in 2003, Cindy immediately made Canberra her home town. She has the “awesome privilege” of working with social and Indigenous entrepreneurs. “These are people who use the tools of business to create measurable social, economic, cultural or environmental change. The Mill House provides business advisory services to help people take their social venture ideas to market.” Cindy said the great thing about the growth of social enterprise is “that we can all practise conscious capitalism or consumer philanthropy just by making better everyday purchases”. She said she also felt “very smug” during the early days of the pandemic because she subscribes to Who Gives A Crap toilet paper delivery service. “By supporting a social enterprise that funds health and hygiene products, I didn’t need to battle it out in the grocery store. I was already well-supplied.”
LA VIE EN ROSE Altina is a Canberra social enterprise that produces alcohol-free craft cocktails. I love the taste and colour of this one. It’s great when you can enjoy a product and also know you are also supporting an important cause.
TRUE CRIME PODCASTS I’m always listening to some kind of true crime story on my walks. The only problem is that in winter, when it gets dark early, I regularly spook myself out. But, it also keeps the step count high!
