thursday 25 june 2020

Last Friday, after spending 23 minutes and 25 seconds on hold to try and (option one) book a table for four at a local restaurant or (option two) order takeaway, my patience ran out and I hung up. (Yes, dear reader, it is ironic that in the time spent waiting on the phone I could’ve cooked dinner. But hindsight is 20/20, as opposed to 2020 which has a lot to answer for.) Option three (there’s always at least three options, as a 1980s career development course convenor once told me) turned out to be ordering takeaway from another restaurant that answered within three rings. But while driving along the restaurant strip to collect our order, I was struck by the sheer numbers of people crowding into every eatery in sight, social distancing tossed out the window. Okay. I understand it’s exciting to be let out after being cooped up for weeks – I feel the thrill too. But let’s keep calm and don’t panic! We want to try to keep this virus crisis under control, as we’ve done so far, and not let a touch of cabin fever undo the months of good work. Capiche? Reasons to be grateful this week include dinner with friends, thoughtful cards and messages from kind souls, sunny mornings, rainy nights, afternoon tea with Angela, vegan berry cheesecake and second chances.

news Mobile speed cameras ‘most beneficial element’ of road safety camera program According to ACT Policing, the instances of speeding on ACT roads has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since March this year, they have issued 1,650 infringements for speeding, 44 of those for driving in excess of 45km/h above the speed limit. Earlier this month, two men were stopped by police on Majura Parkway for driving at dangerous speeds well higher than 45km/h above the limit within two hours of one another. While instances of speeding are up lately across Canberra, it’s nothing new for Majura Parkway. Since opening in April 2016, ACT Policing have issued 829 speeding infringement notices along the arterial road; ranking it the fourth highest in that time behind Gungahlin Drive, William Hovell Drive, and Belconnen Way. ACT Policing has attended 43 collisions on the Majura Parkway between 2016 and 31 May 2020. The Hindmarsh Drive point-to-point speed camera has proved effective at reducing speed and crash numbers along that stretch of road. The 2019 Evaluation of the ACT Road Safety Camera Program estimated it saves 13 reported crashes annually. So why haven’t similar systems

been rolled out across the ACT? An ACT Government spokesperson told Canberra Weekly that The 2019 Evaluation found mobile speed cameras were “the most beneficial element” of the ACT road safety camera program, having reduced crashes by 22% in a 12-month period. In the last 12 months to 22 June 2020, a mobile camera van was positioned on Majura Parkway 212 times and monitored traffic for over 280 hours. In that time, over 241,660 vehicles were checked with 1,526 vehicles detected speeding. “Mobile speed vans have been used extensively on the Majura Parkway in order to reduce speeds and crashes across the network,” they said. The deployment of mobile speed camera vans across the ACT is based on crash history, police information, and the “anywhere, anytime” approach. The 2017 Feasibility Study into the Relocation of a Point-to-point Camera System by ARRB Group ranked Majura Parkway the most suitable new site for a point-to-point camera system in the ACT. However, The 2019 Evaluation found one additional point-to-point camera system could

potentially save 0.8 casualty crashes and 9.6 property damage only crashes per year. It posited that resources would be better targeted towards a 25% increase in operational hours of the mobile speed camera program, which was found to save 9.0 casualty crashes and 140.5 property damage only crashes per year. “This strategic analysis supports the Government’s focus on expanding the mobile camera program ahead of additional fixed cameras,” the spokesperson said. - Denholm Samaras

National Gallery of Australia to cut 10% of staff The National Gallery of Australia (NGA) is expected to lose about 10% of their workforce, or about 30 staff, to deal with a funding shortfall. NGA Director Nick Mitzevich said the process will begin with an initial voluntary redundancy process, “before skills and roles are mapped against the new plan, organisational capabilities, core services and resources”. Announced on Tuesday 23 June, the job cuts come as the NGA plans to reshape and restructure its operations with the objective of both modernising the Gallery and securing its long-term organisational sustainability. The new structure is designed to focus the Gallery’s programs and create greater opportunities for the Australian and international community to engage with the national collection beyond its physical presence in Canberra. “We, like every arts and cultural institution, have to look to create a future where we can sustainably deliver on our mandate,” Mr Mitzevich said. “We have needed a plan that will both improve and protect the Gallery’s long-term offering and our financial stability. Inevitably, that means change.” 6

canberraweekly.com.au

The union representing NGA employees, the Community & Public Sector Union (CPSU), said the Gallery is struggling with rising utility costs, building maintenance, falling interest rates and the ongoing efficiency dividend implemented by the Federal Government. The pre-existing budget woes have been exacerbated by COVID-19 with 80% of the NGA’s audience traditionally coming from outside Canberra. CPSU Deputy National Secretary, Beth Vincent-Pietsch, said national institutions are struggling to cope under the pressure of years of budget cuts. The CPSU is calling on the Federal Government to exempt Australia’s cultural institutions from the efficiency dividend and restore funding to the Gallery. “The NGA is a much-loved part of our national identity. It is one of the keys to our cultural memory and understanding. More than that, it has a legislated mandate to collect, exhibit, and restore the very best of Australian and international art. This government’s underfunding is crippling the NGA’s capacity to meet its mandate.”

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr also expressed disappointment about the job losses and said further support is needed for national institutions. “Rebuilding our tourism industry is an important component of Canberra’s Recovery Plan. Our tourism industry contributes over $2.5 billion a year to our local economy and employs tens of thousands of Canberrans,” Mr Barr said. “Supporting our national institutions is fundamental to this recovery. These institutions collectively bring hundreds of thousands of visitors to Canberra each year, and the ACT Government has proven a track record of significantly supporting them through our Major Events Fund.” Mr Barr was especially critical that “when the Commonwealth can fund $500 million for the redevelopment of the War Memorial, there should not be job losses in other institutions”. He said the ACT Government has provided advice to the Commonwealth on ways that the institutions could raise more income and avoid situations where people have to lose their jobs. Allowing them to retain the parking revenue they receive is one practical example.

Canberra Weekly spent time with Canberra community leaders Francis Owusu (left), Dion Devow and Cindy Mitchell to discuss their recent achievements and their responses to the Black Lives Matter movement. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.

Celebrating Canberra’s culturally diverse leaders Accomplished Canberra community leaders Cindy Mitchell, Dion Devow and Francis Owusu were all moved by the recent Black Lives Matter protests. “We’ve still got a long way to go, but I think there’s a different way people are looking at the things black people experience and what we have gone through,” Mr Devow said.

In light of those recent events, Canberra Weekly took time to celebrate the recent achievements of these outstanding local people of colour. Originally from the USA, Ms Mitchell migrated to Australia in 2003. After settling in Canberra, she founded the Mill House in 2016, a

provider of business advisory services to help people take their social venture ideas to market. In March, Ms Mitchell was named 2020 ACT Woman of the Year in recognition of her work in empowering women and girls across Canberra by educating them to embrace entrepreneurship. “I had these young women of colour coming up to me being like ‘we won’ … For them, to just be able to have someone on the other side able to say, ‘you can do this’, and to be there is a big deal,” she said. Owner of Indigenous clothing label, Darkies Design, Mr Devow has worked in Indigenous affairs for over 25 years across health, education and justice. Recently he developed a program to help Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander children get into IT, working with the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. Called the Indigi-Cyber Camp, the first event was held at Questacon in

December last year. Mr Devow hopes to be able to roll out the program further across the country. Mr Owusu is the founder and CEO of not-for-profit dance-based social enterprise, Kulture Break. Since its establishment in 2002, Mr Owusu has championed the wellbeing, transformation and empowerment of young people and the community through Kulture Break. He said the pandemic shutdown has had a devastating effect on young people, something he has observed in his work at Kulture Break after taking their classes online. “Mental health is a massive thing. We advocate against social isolation and the message we’re telling people currently is to isolate, so it’s a very difficult thing for young people to understand,” he said. War Memorial tickets in demand

A pilot stadium project will allow fans to return to GIO Stadium Canberra as both the Brumbies and Raiders prepare to host matches at the venue in early July. On Friday 19 June, ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the ACT Chief Health Officer has approved the pilot project that is expected to allow “between about 1,000 and 2,000 fans to attend the Raiders and Brumbies games”. Mr Barr said the clubs will manage their ticketing. He expected “the initial tickets will be a bit scarce and highly sought after, but if the pilot goes well then of course there will be more spectators able to attend”. The Raiders will get their first opportunity to play at home in Canberra on Friday 3 July when they take on the St George Illawarra Dragons. It follows the Australian

Tickets are now available to visit the Australian War Memorial as it reopens from next Wednesday 1 July, after COVID-19 restrictions forced its closure on 24 March. The popular national institution is inviting visitors to book free, timed sessions to Anzac Hall or the museum galleries, or to attend the Last Post Ceremony. A spokesperson for the Memorial said there had already been a high demand for tickets since becoming available on Monday this week, 22 June.

The venue is using its timed ticket sessions and one-way direction flows for foot traffic through the venue to adhere to social distancing restrictions. The spokesperson said the Memorial would not offer guided tours until further notice. “We are not offering guided tours or public talks but hope to reintroduce these once it is safe to do so,” the spokesperson said. “There is an increased hygiene regime in place as well, including regular cleaning and hand sanitiser available throughout the galleries.”

“Since the free tickets have been made available to the public, early indications show significant engagement from the public with some sessions already at capacity,” they said. Tickets can be booked on the Australian War Memorial website, or could be available at the Memorial entry, subject to capacity.

Following its closure in March, the Memorial and other cultural institutions in Canberra were given the okay to reopen from 30 May. The Memorial decided it would not reopen until 1 July to finalise its COVID-safe business plan and prioritise the safety of staff and the public. - Danielle Meddemmen

Tiny’s 2.5 advertising moment

Goran Srejic, better known in Canberra as Tiny, is known for his big ideas. While he has recently launched Tiny’s 2.5 which aims to raise $2.5 million for local charities, he has also built an amusement park, Bora Lavirint, in Serbia.

Tiny’s 2.5: Putting the ‘fun’ back into fundraising From car challenges to pumpkin trebuchets, Tiny’s 2.5 is a series of fundraising events set to boost the coffers of local charities while also providing reward for those raising funds. Tiny’s 2.5 is a new endeavour for Goran Srejic, better known in Canberra as Tiny, one of the co-founders of The Green Shed which has raised more than $1 million for charity since it opened its doors in 2010. Now, as Tiny prepares to finish up at The Green Shed, he has launched more ambitious plans to raise $2.5 million for local charities in five years. The first event off the mark is Tiny’s Car Challenge. “We want to show the rest of Australia that Canberra can raise $1 million through this car challenge,” Tiny said. “All charities get the proceeds; participants are fundraising for their charity not us.” The top 20 fundraisers overall

will have the chance to win a new VW car which will be located at Canberra Outlet Centre. The twist? The top fundraisers, or their nominated person, must be the last one standing with their hand still on the car to win the prize. Applications for charities open from 22 June to 23 July with fundraising to run for three weeks from 1 August. The car challenge itself is due to be held on 3 September. While only the last person standing will win the car, second prize is $5,000 from Kellie Chalker-Hall at McIntyre Property, with Tiny saying the prizes are a way to “thank the fundraisers”. “It’s going to be an annual event,” he said. “Hands Across Canberra have jumped on board because they have 250 charities, but any charity can apply.” Tiny is encouraging local charities to apply as it’s a great opportunity to generate donations, especially given the tough conditions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Then it is their job to get their supporters on board and help fundraise,” he said. In addition to Tiny’s Car Challenge, Tiny’s 2.5 is planning a Pumpkin Chunkin’ Trebuchet event in coming months, which will see participants aim to catapult a pumpkin into a 44-gallon drum in a paddock. With the trebuchets (catapults) under construction, this event will raise funds for Vietnam Veterans ACT, who are previous beneficiaries of The Green Shed’s Charity Days, “to continue the great work they do” over the next five years. The Pumpkin Chunkin’ Trebuchet will offer $10,000 in prize money – $5,000 for the winner and $5,000 for their nominated charity. A third event on the cards is a talent quest at the AIS; however, due to current restrictions, this may be “postponed for a little longer”. Tiny is hopeful that all three Tiny’s 2.5 fundraisers – the car

challenge, pumpkin chunkin’ and talent quest – will become annual events. But that’s not all! He’s also keen to revive the legendary Birdman Rally, which was a popular event at Lake Burley Griffin circa 1985-1992, so watch this space. For Tiny, his community spirit is led by the ethos “If you can, you should”. “What we do is come up with a whacky idea, write it down and do it,” he smiled. “Canberra has been good to me over the years … I just think if you are capable to help others you should. We are all in this together.” For more information about Tiny’s 2.5 and the upcoming Tiny’s Car Challenge, visit tinys.com.au

School striker brushes up on climate issues

Young artist and school striker, Alice Harcourt, has donated three artworks to the Conservation Council ACT Region to shine a light on climate issues.

Impressive local teenage activist and artist Alice Harcourt is making waves on the climate change front, merging her passion for the environment and art to make a difference. The 13-year-old school striker comes from a family passionate about climate change and has been attending rallies since she was a toddler. Alice has donated three of her artworks to the Conservation Council ACT Region’s online auction in the hope money raised will go towards the worthy cause. “Climate change is a big thing and we need to start noticing it a bit more,” she said, “… but with the [COVID-19] crisis going on, we are not really taking action. “It’s a problem that is going to expand faster and faster and every single second matters.” The talented teenager attended

an art school four years ago and said her passion has been growing ever since. She has donated a sketch of civil rights activist Mahatma Gandhi, a watercolour piece representing the earth and effects of climate change, and a third artwork using only nail polish. “I was just using what we had at home instead of buying more stuff and more packaging, so I didn’t create a lot of waste.” However, donating her artworks to the auction is just one way Alice is trying to do her bit. “I ride my bike everywhere I can, and we use beeswax wraps in my lunch box,” she said. “I do take long showers though, I need to stop that.” The online auction, launched on 5 June to celebrate World Environment Day, features over 90 donated items. Conservation Council ACT

Region executive director Helen Oakey said now was the perfect time to be shining a light on climate issues. “In a year where we’ve been challenged on many fronts, including environmental issues, this is a great time to reflect on the importance of standing up for a safe climate, for nature, and for sustainable living,” Helen said. Alice said she was honoured to donate her artworks to raise awareness on the issue but was concerned the pandemic had overshadowed the important conversation. “People might take more notice when this is over, but I feel like we should show more interest now and all the time.” Online bids for all auction items close on 26 July, via conservationcouncil.org.au - Danielle Meddemmen

news Take time to ‘Know Your Neighbour’ A new campaign is supporting Canberrans to connect with their neighbours to help build and maintain community connections. Part of the ACT Government’s Community Recovery Plan, Minister for Community Services and Facilities Suzanne Orr said the “Know Your Neighbour program encourages the community to build stronger relationships with the people who live around us, which we know makes our community healthier and our neighbourhoods safer”. Yet, while many in the community are increasing social contact with the easing of restrictions, there are also many people who will continue to isolate to protect their health. In particular, C Moore, CEO Women with Disabilities ACT, said “people with disabilities and people with chronic health conditions or illness may continue to self-isolate”. “It’s important we look out for each other. By looking out for your neighbours, we can create a more inclusive, connected and friendlier Canberra.” According to the ACT Government, getting

to know your neighbours is important for many reasons including: social connection; increased quality of life, healthier and happier neighbourhoods; feeling safe, engaged and an overall sense of belonging; a readiness to co-operate, mutual respect and common aspirations; increased security with neighbours looking out for each other; and localised assistance during a natural disaster and/or health crisis like COVID-19. The Know Your Neighbour card is a great way to take the first step in reaching out and breaking the ice. You can print and fill in the card (attached to the front cover of this edition) or you can write your own message and drop it in your neighbour’s letterbox. A few things to consider before you get started: Consider how you approach people: You may not have met these people before, or you maybe just know them from across the street. Consider the best way to make contact and respect your neighbour’s privacy. Protect your health and the safety of others:

news Homebirth a permanent option Eligible families in the ACT will now be able to access homebirth as an ongoing birthing option through Canberra Health Services following the completion of a successful three-year trial program. The homebirth trial started in October 2016 with interest in the program steadily growing from eight women in 2017 through to 37 in 2019, and the first successful

birth in January 2017. The Evaluation of the Publicly Funded Homebirth Trial in the ACT released on 18 June included 12 recommendations to improve the performance of the program. The ACT Government has agreed or agreed in principle to all recommendations of the report, including that the program be incorporated as an additional birthing option for eligible women.

Changes to ACT election Expanded early voting is on the cards for the planned October 2020 ACT Legislative Assembly election to ensure it can go ahead in a COVID-safe manner. The COVID-19 Emergency Response Legislation Amendment Bill 2020 (No. 2) introduced in the Legislative Assembly on 18 June also introduces the legislative framework for telephone voting as an option for people who are blind or vision-impaired and those with physical disabilities. Amendments were also introduced to support the Electoral

Commission implementing a limited overseas electronic voting solution aimed at ensuring more votes can be added to the count in the context of international postal delays due to COVID-19. Electoral amendments introduced through this Bill will only impact the October 2020 election. The Bill will also repeal an existing COVID-19 emergency response measure which allows the Supreme Court to order a judge alone criminal trial. Summernats set to return A record number of earlybird entries have been received for the 34th Street Machine Summernats due to be held in the ACT on 7-10 January 2021. More than 1,550 entrants have now been processed and approved, a 15% increase over the next fastest selling event in the festival’s history, Summernats 30, which

drew over 2,500 entrants. Summernats managing director Andy Lopez said the event represents a massive economic benefit to the ACT’s tourism and hospitality sector, with this year’s event delivering a direct economic impact of $29.7 million. Tickets and more information at www.summernats.com.au

Helping Floriade bloom To ensure this year’s ‘Floriade: Reimagined’ festival flourishes come spring, Icon Water has partnered with Events ACT to help community groups water their blooms. In late May, volunteers from the Kingston Barton Residents Association contacted Icon Water for assistance with watering their bulbs. With limited options nearby, they had been relying on local businesses to assist with watering.

Upon receiving the request, Icon Water wanted to provide wider support for the initiative and has agreed to help all the Floriade Community participants across the ACT with water for their garden beds. Icon Water will cover the watering costs for groups who can access watering systems and has also arranged for tankers to water gardens for groups who don’t have access to watering options.

sport At a glance Canberra Raiders Cup confirmed The Canberra Raiders Cup first grade competition will go ahead this 2020 season with four teams contesting the division: Queanbeyan Blues, Gungahlin Bulls, Woden Valley Rams, and the Canberra Raiders Under 20s side. Canberra Region Rugby League chairman, Gary Green, said while it is great for the competition to go ahead, “it’s disappointing that more teams couldn’t participate”. “But it is great to see the support of the Canberra Raiders Under 20s. The CRRL is appreciative of the efforts of the committees from the Rams, Bulls and Blues for getting teams on the field.” The George Tooke Shield competition will also be going ahead this year, with four, possibly five teams. Reserve grade, Under 19s, Ladies League Tag and the Women’s Tackle competitions are still under development. The Canberra Raiders Cup competition will start on the weekend of 25 July. Other competition start dates are to be confirmed.

Rugby ready to return ACT & Southern NSW Rugby have confirmed a return to rugby competitions from 18 July, following further easing of COVID-19 restrictions from the ACT Government. Contact training resumed in the ACT on 19 June, and will return in NSW from 1 July, giving teams time to prepare for the start of games. Over 60 clubs across the region returned to formal training 1 June, with participation levels tracking positively towards rugby resuming next month. All teams have been adhering to the guidelines around training and hygiene standards set out in the, ‘Return to Play Framework’, a critical measure in Rugby’s return

moving forward. Specific details on each competition’s draw will be confirmed at a later date.

Bushfire recovery grants The Broulee Moruya Football Netball Club, Eurobodalla Netball Association and Sapphire Coast Netball Association have all been successful in round one of the Confident Girls Foundation Bushfire Recovery Grants initiative. Netball Australia’s official charity, the Confident Girls Foundation, established the Bushfire Relief Appeal in March to support associations and clubs within the netball community that were affected by devastating bushfires that swept the country last summer. This first round of grants will support clubs and associations to recover, providing funds to help rebuild infrastructure, purchase equipment, cover the cost of registrations and fees, hold clinics and special community events, and supply uniforms, among many other initiatives. Submissions for round two of the grants are now open at confidentgirlsfoundation. smartygrants.com.au

GIVIT donation of the week: Mobile phone A local organisation that supports families in need is looking for a mobile phone to help an extremely deserving family. The single mother has a serious health issue which has stopped her permanently from driving. The family has overcome this hurdle by the children taking three different buses to school, never missing a day and staying deeply committed to their studies and development as a family. Unfortunately, the mother’s mobile phone has recently stopped working and this is her only way of staying in contact with her children while travelling to and from school, connecting to doctors and receiving school communications. Any pre-loved mobile phones that can be donated to support this family’s day-to-day life will be greatly appreciated. Items can be dropped off, posted or picked up by the charity. To donate, visit givit.org.au/items-needed, search ‘mobile phone’ and select requests located in ACT. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant charity to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off.

Share your community event. Email news@canberraweekly.com.au with ‘HYH’ in the subject field. Deadline is 10 days prior to Thursday edition date.

World Small Business Day: Canberra business numbers reach a new milestone

O

n World Small Business Day 2020, Canberra reaches an important milestone. More than 30,000 private sector businesses now operate across the city – an increase of 5% over the past year. The majority of these enterprises are small, but together they employ nearly two-thirds of Canberra’s workforce. To recognise the importance of small businesses, the United Nations has designated 27 June each year as Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises Day. The day recognises and celebrates the important contributions small and microbusinesses around the world make to job opportunities and prosperity in local communities. According to the International Council of Small Business, these companies account for 60% to 70% of total employment and 50% of global GDP. The Australian Bureau of Statistics’ latest Counts of Australian Business publication shows that the ACT had 30,050 businesses formally operating within its borders during the last financial year. This is the largest number of private companies we’ve ever had in the city’s history. In fact, during the 2018-19 financial year, the ACT had the highest rate of new business creation in the country! That’s a great achievement to celebrate on World Small Business Day.

Retail turnover in the ACT increased at almost twice the national rate, growing by 4.7% last year; and residential construction growth helped to support our building industry at a critical time when the sector struggled nationwide. However, this year’s World Small Business Day will be bittersweet as we take the opportunity to recognise that small businesses around the world have been hit hardest by the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic. The unprecedented health measures enacted to contain the spread of the virus have resulted in supply chain disruptions and a massive drop in demand. While we should celebrate the growth of the private sector and ACT economy, our small businesses are facing tough times ahead. The last seven months have been especially difficult as so many were severely affected by bushfires, smoke, hail damage and now COVID-19. However, we know that small business owners are resilient, and over the past few months we’ve seen them innovate and improvise, against all the odds, to support their people, customers, and communities. This year our businesses need Canberrans to buy local. We are all connected, and every local purchase helps to support a business, their suppliers and the people they employ.

Graham Catt, CEO, Canberra Business Chamber: “This year our businesses need Canberrans to buy local. We are all connected, and every local purchase helps to support a business, their suppliers and the people they employ.”

Barbecue mushroom and haloumi flatbreads Recipe by Miguel Maestre for Australian Mushrooms | australianmushrooms.com.au

Image and text from The Mindful Kitchen by Heather Thomas, photography by Xavier D. Buendia, Quarto Books, RRP $39.99.

Serves 8

4 stems fresh rosemary (leaves only), plus extra for marinade

Makes 4

Olive oil

300g plain flour, plus extra for dusting

2-3 flat mushrooms

1/2 tsp salt

Salt and pepper

Small packet haloumi, sliced

50ml olive oil

6 stems fresh thyme (leaves only), plus extra for marinade

4 garlic cloves, minced

185ml oat milk

100g grated mozzarella, to sprinkle

1/2-1 Tbsp vegetable oil, for cooking

500g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting and kneading 500g Greek yoghurt

Put the flour in a big mixing bowl and make a well in the centre. In the same bowl, add all the yoghurt into the well. Mix together with your hands until the ingredients are combined to form a dough. (If the dough appears too dry, add more yoghurt. If it is too wet, add more flour.) Add a generous pinch of salt, some pepper, fresh thyme, rosemary and a splash of olive oil to the dough and mix again lightly with your hands. Sprinkle your workbench with flour and place the dough on top and start to knead the ball of dough with your hands until it becomes a nice, smooth ball, being careful not to overwork it. Divide the dough into 8 equal portions and, using a rolling pin, roll the dough into flat, long elliptical circles – you want it thin, but not so thin that you can’t pick up the rolled out dough! Leave the dough to rest for a couple of minutes on your floured workbench whilst you make the mushroom mix. Cut the flat mushrooms and the haloumi into thick slices. They should be roughly the same thickness (just under 1cm). Using a sharp knife, score the mushrooms slices on both sides, with shallow, diagonal lines that form a crisscross pattern, taking care not to cut through the mushroom. Add the mushroom and haloumi slices to a bowl, with 2-3 tablespoons of olive oil, extra rosemary and thyme leaves and garlic. Mix well and let it marinate for a few minutes. To cook your flatbreads, fire up your barbecue to a medium heat. Once hot and ready, brush one side of your flatbread with olive oil and grill this oil side down for 4 minutes (until you get grill marks on the underside of the flatbread). At the same time, cook your mushroom and haloumi mix on the other side of the barbecue for 4 minutes, turning halfway through. When one side of the flatbread is cooked, turn it over and sprinkle with grated mozzarella - the residual heat will start to melt it. Add the grilled mushroom and haloumi mix on top, alternating between mushroom and haloumi slices. Dress with fresh thyme leaves, and an extra drizzle of olive oil. Remove carefully from the barbecue, slice, and serve on a board with hummus, pesto or baba ganoush. 22

Flatbread

canberraweekly.com.au

Combine the flour, salt, oil and oat milk in a bowl to make a soft dough. Sprinkle the work surface with flour, turn out the dough and knead for a few minutes until it is smooth. Add another teaspoon or two of flour if it is too sticky. Wrap the dough in a tea towel and let it rest in the fridge for about 30 minutes. Dust the work surface with flour again. Cut your dough into four even pieces, roll into balls, then roll out into thin rounds (about 0.5cm thick). Spread the oil evenly across a non-stick frying pan and place over a medium heat. Place one flatbread in the pan. It will puff up on one side and when it does, flip it and cook the other side. If it puffs up too much, pat it gently to break the air bubble. You are looking for golden brown spots on both sides. Keep flipping until you are happy. Use your fingers as well as a spatula for the process. It should take around 2 minutes to cook each flatbread. Stack the cooked bread on a plate as you make the rest and keep a tea towel to hand to cover the bread and trap in the heat.

Strawberry, basil and goat’s cheese focaccia Recipe courtesy of Queensland Strawberries | qldstrawberries.com.au Serves 6-8

1 1/2 cups lukewarm water 2 tsp dry yeast 1 tsp sugar 4 Tbsp olive oil 2 cups wholemeal flour 1 2/3 cups bread flour (high protein), plus a little extra for kneading 1 1/2 tsp salt 10 strawberries, hulled and halved Handful basil leaves, shredded 100g goat’s cheese Coarse salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste

Pour the water into a large bowl, add the yeast and sugar, stirring to dissolve. Add the olive oil followed by the flours and salt, mix with your hands to form a dough. Turn dough onto floured work surface. Knead, until the dough is elastic and smooth (adding a little flour as necessary to prevent sticking), about 10 minutes. Shape into a ball. Alternatively, you can use a stand mixer with a dough hook for this – mix on medium-low for 8 minutes until the dough forms around the hook, turn out onto a lightly floured surface, shape into a ball. Clean the bowl and lightly oil. Cover with plastic and let rise in a warm spot for 1.5 to 2 hours, until doubled in size. Punch down the dough. Cover again and rest for a further 20 minutes. Preheat the oven to 220°C. Grease a baking tray with olive oil and line with baking paper. Shape the dough into a rectangle or oval, pressing out until about 2 cm thick. Cover with a lightly damp towel and let rest for 30 minutes. Just before baking, dimple the dough all over with your fingertips. Gently press the strawberries into the dough and dot over grape sized pieces of goat’s cheese. Sprinkle with coarse salt and the basil. Drizzle all over with olive oil (1-2 tablespoons). Bake for 20-25 minutes, until the bread is golden brown. Rest for 10 minutes before eating or cool completely.

This year’s Truffle Festival is forging ahead, with a number of virtual and in-person events around the region for you to get your truffle fix. Photo: Martin Ollman.

Truffe Festival kicks off amidst bumper season Canberra’s beloved winter festival celebrating all things truffles will go on this year, albeit slightly differently to previous iterations.

24

canberraweekly.com.au

Due to COVID-19, this year’s Truffle Festival will see a number of events head online; a virtual French masterclass with Les Tres

Bon’s Christophe Gregoire kicked off the festivities over the weekend (Sunday 21 June). While more virtual events are planned, including one with Aubergine’s Ben Willis, president of the Truffle Festival Association, Damian Robinson, says some old festival favourites will be back this year, too, like the beloved truffle hunts alongside Canberra’s cleverest canines. “Everyone loves the truffle dogs; they steal the show every time!” he says. Damian, who also owns Turalla Truffles in Bungendore, says this year is proving to be a bumper season for truffles in the region, with an abundance of great produce. He says events at Turalla are already 80% booked out. “What a great truffle season we’re having,” he says, “the truffles coming up for June are exceptional”. And while COVID-19 has meant the region has had less time to

prepare, Damian is confident the festival will still pull a crowd. “My gut feeling is it’s going to be heavily booked,” he says. “On the tourist side of things, truffles tend to defy the odds. They are so popular and it’s such a small window so people are fascinated by them. We’re lucky in that sense.” He puts the success of Canberra’s truffle industry down to the mature taste of the region’s produce, as well as a host of local chefs who “know what they’re doing”. “We have that idyllic situation … We’re half an hour away from a major city. “Even in France you don’t get that. The truffles are miles away from Paris – it’s kind of a unique thing.” The festival will run through to the end of August. Book talk

This week, Michael Popple reviews the pick of recent science fiction and horror novels. You can find more of Michael’s book reviews on his blog: unseenlibrary.com Aurora Burning by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff Allen & Unwin, $19.99

An ancient race of alien parasites is attempting to assimilate all life in the galaxy, and our only hope is the rogue Squad 312 of the Aurora Legion. Made up of a comically mismatched team of young soldiers and assisted by the mysterious Aurora, Squad 312 must contend with bounty hunters, treason, drama and some extreme family history if they are to survive. This is an outstanding and wildly addictive young adult science fiction novel from two amazing Australian authors. The second book in their Aurora Cycle series, Aurora Burning is a fast paced and very entertaining read. Highly recommended.

Rising Canberra filmmaker honoured Earlier this month at the 67th Sydney Film Festival, Canberra-born and raised director Alex Wu received the prestigious Dendy Live Action Short Award for best Australian short film for Idol. The 18-minute film is focused on the inner workings of the idol entertainment industry in China, a restrictive industry where celebrities are allowed very little freedom after signing contracts at a young age. The film’s main character is an idol who goes against company policy and is found out to have a secret relationship. That’s leaked to the media which prompts a tragedy. “It’s a very complex industry and a very complex situation without a lot of answers. I was just hoping to unpack some of it and make a film because I thought it was so important,” he told Canberra Weekly. Wu’s pursuit of a film career led to him study at the Victorian College of the Arts, where Idol was made as his honours major project. manipulation involving situational comedy. The subject of our protagonists’ affections is on a pedestal, and it is usually through their change of heart that they ‘select’ the protagonist after a heart-wrenching speech in the third act. The Graduate and Say Anything both worked to establish this formula, so much so that the ending of Pretty in Pink had to be altered to accommodate it. It was When Harry Met Sally that broke the mould by asking the question: can men and women ever truly just be friends? Noah refuses to accept ‘just’ a friendship with the woman he loves, so he continually revisits the day they first met ala Groundhog Day to crack the code in getting Avery to reciprocate his feelings. Avery’s best friend and roommate Carrie (Shelley Hennig) is dubious of Noah in all timelines, serving as his sounding board and voice of reason when Noah repeatedly finds Avery naturally gravitating towards Ethan.

Handbag woes, sorted Canberra stylist and lifestyle blogger, Janette Wojtaszak, of The Statement Life, was sick of rummaging through her handbag looking for things, only to find she’d left it in another purse. She decided to come up with a solution for her handbag organisation woes, launching Sorted earlier this year.

“I am a highly organised person and felt like my bag situation wasn’t,” she says. “I always needed something – lip gloss, antihistamines – and I never had them in the bag I carried. I just knew that other women would be experiencing the same thing. I had to solve it for us!” She’s designed the Sorted bag, a clear pouch with pockets to store all your essentials in the one place and move from bag to bag: “it’s available in black or pink and has one clear panel allowing you to see your belongings, and the other side is covered for any hidden essentials you don’t want to be seen”. You can even use it as a clutch! Janette says it has pockets large enough for “everyday essentials such as cards, pens, lip gloss and sunglasses”.

Make the most of your home office While many people have returned to the office, for some, working from home has become the new norm. To make the most of your home office environment, interior design expert and Luxaflex Window Fashions brand ambassador, Neale Whitaker, shares his top tips. What needs to be considered when choosing an appropriate study or office area? When it comes to setting up your own home office, ideally, you’ll want to choose a spacious room with plenty of natural light (and a good view, in my personal opinion). This is shown to increase concentration, decrease distractions and keep you focused for longer, however, do consider how you will manage this light. Window coverings are important for not only style purposes, but also in effectively blocking those glares to computer screens, managing temperatures and keeping you comfortable. You may need to factor in multiple desks or workspaces, so for those without the luxury of a spare room to completely re-do, pick an area that is flexible and away from the hub of the home.

32

canberraweekly.com.au

What are some key styling tips to factor in? The style of your property is very personal and, for most of us, we want to maintain some flow throughout the home. Whilst I love the eclectic look, simple and chic is the rule when it comes to creating a sophisticated office space. I find that less clutter also makes for less distraction. A bright room with lots of light creates a pleasant working environment, and a neutral white backdrop makes for a good starting point. It’s easy to then bring a bit of fun into the office with some colourful accessories and key pieces. Are there any mistakes people make when designing their home office? I don’t know whether there are mistakes as such in designing a home office space, however, I know people often don’t consider how the space will make them feel. It’s easy to open a catalogue and simply pick out a theme to replicate. But if your space doesn’t suit that theme, it can have an unproductive and unappealing effect. An area that isn’t inviting, is too cold or simply

When it comes to your home office, keep things simple and clean. Less clutter makes for less distraction.

uncomfortable will leave you seeking elsewhere to sit, defeating the purpose of the space altogether. You want to open up the space, not close it off. Don’t forget comfortable seating. Placing a sofa or creating a window seat is a great idea as it allows you an alternative place to sit when taking calls or needing a change to your desk chair. What would you consider as non-negotiables? Adequate desk space and flexibility. There’s nothing worse than feeling confined or restricted in the home, so choose a desk that allows you the freedom to move comfortably. Don’t crowd the room – keep things simple and clean.

Pretty in Pearce Pearce 14B Julius Street This modern home in the Canberra suburb of Pearce is light filled, family friendly and private, according to Michael Potter Real Estate principal, Michael Potter. “This is a special townhouse residence,” he says, one that has been “fastidiously crafted to a high standard and showcases a lightfilled, family-friendly design with plenty of indoor and outdoor areas allowing for one’s own privacy, relaxation and entertaining.” He says it would be the perfect new home for a family with children attending the local schools in the area, due to the great location and flexible floorplan. The home is 10 minutes' walk from Marist College and Melrose High School, and 15 minutes to Sacred Heart Primary School. “The property would also attract a professional couple working in the Woden Town Centre precinct,” he says. The home includes open-plan living on the ground level, with a gourmet kitchen, study and the separate master suite with walk-in robe and luxurious ensuite. “The upper level features two spacious bedrooms with a rumpus/ retreat serviced by a stunning custom

designed bathroom,” Potter says. “There are also plenty of alfresco outdoor areas with a front patio area on arrival, a solar courtyard in the heart of the home and an appealing, well-proportioned entertaining terrace to the rear of the residence with panoramic mountain vistas.” Potter says this residence’s location is second to none: “a very special feature of the property is its central and convenient location”. “Poised in a very quiet loop street, and across the road to reserve, the home is a 10-minute walk to the local shops and a very short drive to Southlands Shopping Centre, Weston Creek and the City.”

Period perfection Queanbeyan NSW 123 Stornaway Road This charming home, nestled in Stornaway Road in Queanbeyan, is packed with period features and an abundance of character. The circa-1912 home sits on an 683sqm block and would be perfect for a number of different buyers, according to LJ Hooker Queanbeyan owner and principal, Jason Maxwell. “The house suits a wide range of

The master bedroom includes a fireplace with Carrara marble surrounds and tiled marble hearth. The delightful pastel kitchen is well-equipped for storage and cooking up a storm, with plenty of space on the timber bench, softclose drawers, dishwasher and a traditional-style gas cooktop and electric oven.

Maxwell says the home’s period features make it a standout offering on the market, while recent work has seen it updated to include all the modern creature comforts. “The house really encapsulates all that is great of the bygone era through high ceilings, the timber floors, windows, picture and dado rail and then this has been enhanced through a thoughtful and tasteful restoration and renovation,” he says. “It will represent real value and with its extras like heating and cooling, and is a rare opportunity to

property news

canberraweeklyrealestate.com.au

Weekly market wrap Canberra continues to punch well above its weight During the last few months, perception of adverse market forces has played havoc with the psyche of buyers and sellers. Once the initial shock of restrictions introduced to stop the transmission of COVID-19 had passed, the underlying strength of our property market became evident. This is largely due to the proportion of Canberrans employed either directly in the public service or adjacent industries. Reflecting on some of the ‘wild’ forecasts garnering the most media attention, their modelling focuses on unemployment, market sentiment and foreign investment. They argued rapidly rising rates of unemployment, buyer and seller perceptions, and prices adjusting lower would be detrimental to

property values. Removing foreign investment would be the crushing blow for residential property owners in Australia’s capital cities. Canberra has outperformed forecasts by a significant margin. On 17 April, the Commonwealth Bank forecast property values would fall by 10% during the following six months. By 1 June, CoreLogic’s Monthly Home Value Index had shown property values in Canberra remained flat during April and increased by 0.55% during May. Now there is a mountain of evidence indicating there is plenty for property owners to be optimistic about. The unemployment rate in Canberra fell from 4.3% to 4.1% during May 2020 and was the only jurisdiction nationally to do so. As trade restrictions on businesses are relaxed and a greater number of businesses resume operating at full capacity, it would

appear likely the unemployment rate will continue to fall.

Low stock volumes see favourable conditions for sellers Stock volumes are low; the number of established properties advertised for the first time on Allhomes has been hovering in the low 100s since the end of the first week in May, cracking 110 new established listings in a week twice, only to fall below again the following week. Lack of choice has created favourable market conditions for sellers, evidenced by Canberra recording the highest preliminary auction clearance rate nationally of 80% on Saturday 20 June. Another indicator of market strength is the rental vacancy rate which, according to SQM Research, in May 2020 was 1.3%. For comparison, in May 2019 their data shows the rental vacancy rate was 1.2%, indicating there has been negligible impact on the rental market. Asking rent had fallen month on month to 12 June by 1% for houses and were flat for units. Yields remain solid and attractive for investors. Migration was the last risk to the market, however, our local construction industry had already been trending towards moderating volumes. Australian

WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST

Bureau of Statistics year on year new dwelling approvals data to April 2020 shows new dwelling approvals are down 27.7%. This is a significant reduction in supply which will go a long way to offsetting any potential reduction in demand from overseas migrants. Historical market resilience of property values in Canberra remains proven. For property owners, there is plenty to be optimistic about, however data provides a compelling case that those waiting on the sidelines to time their entry into the market are at risk of being left behind.

Weekly Facebook Live series Each Saturday at 9am I host a Facebook Live for Canberra Weekly to answer your property questions. You can send through questions in advance via email to hello@canberrapropertypodcast. com.au with ‘Facebook Live’ in the subject line, and tune in via the Canberra Weekly Facebook page.

Yass auction success The NSW town of Yass got in on the auction action last Saturday as Ray White Rural Canberra Yass sales, stock and station agent, George Southwell, sold 16 Walgrove Road for $1.8 million. “We had fantastic interest in this property, which just shows how active the market really is at the moment. The under-bidder was actually bidding from Tokyo and never visited the property, wanting

to get into the market in Australia,” Mr Southwell said. “We’re noticing a big drive to people moving out to the country after COVID-19. We were expecting a downturn in this local market due to Coronavirus, but it’s simply not happening.” Mr Southwell said this sale makes it “well and truly evident that we’re dealing with a market that will operate at all levels”.

celebrity birthday ARIANA GRANDE 26 June 1993 Some of Ariana’s relationships and friendships will have reached their use-by date, bringing separations and her personal affairs may need to be sorted out. She must try to avoid disagreements getting in the way of amicable resolutions. She will need to be careful not to push friends and loved ones right out of her life. Getting involved in intense, vigorous sports will be a big help to her mental and emotional wellbeing.

Getty

in the stars ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

Family issues that have been swept under the carpet are going to resurface. There will need to be detailed examination, so you arrive at the core elements and determine how best to handle them. Neptune went retrograde on 23 June, bringing into question our sense of place in the world.

Timely communications with a colleague will offer invaluable advice and could recall a lesson from the past. Watch out for relationships that are operating with unclear expectations, as this Mercury retrograde period will highlight confusion in personal dealings, especially those that feel unbalanced or unreciprocated.

While it’s never a bad thing to be practical and weigh your options, overanalysing every last detail prevents you from moving forward. Remember that spontaneity and inspiration are important factors in decision-making, too. It’s not a case of ‘look before you leap’ but rather ‘he who hesitates is lost’.

From 19 June until 13 July, Mercury, the planet of communication turns retrograde in critical Cancer and opposes powerful Pluto in Capricorn. Aspects of your loved ones that you have not seen before suddenly come to light and, if not dealt with positively, then separations are likely.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY This is a good time for research and investigation or to uncover secrets. Go ahead and speak your truth, this is not a time to hold back. A conversation that turns back time will be enlightening, and your domestic quarters will buzz with activity.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE Be certain to check financial statements carefully so you know exactly what is coming in and going out of your bank accounts. Mercury opposite Pluto creates a battle of ideas, either within your own mind or between competitors, possibly sparking fierce debates or even arguments.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG Mercury retrograde began in your privacy sector on 17 June and lasts for several weeks. You could notice some secrets emerge that you didn’t know about or be seeking closure on things that have come before. Avoid making agreements during Mercury retrograde, as they will falter later.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT Some big cosmic shifts this month are helping you to grow emotionally, mentally and spiritually. The prize is that instead of people pleasing, you will be building a better relationship with yourself. Exploring a new work, personal or social environment will bring intriguing discoveries.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV You’ve been pushing yourself so hard the past few years that you’ve forgotten how to recognise your own needs and rhythms sometimes. Make an extra effort to connect with your closest friends and most trusted confidantes - those you trust most to take care of your gentle heart.

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC The great thing about you, Sagittarius, is that you are naturally wired to see the bigger picture. You have so many options available to you, so trust that whatever changes take place are just one part of a great journey. So be willing to surrender this week!

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB Venus retrograde ends on 25 June and a few days later (30 June), Jupiter and Pluto connect in Capricorn. These two celestial bodies only align every 13 years, so their bond is an important astrological happening. For Aquarius, this will inspire you to deepen your spirituality and emotional intelligence.

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto all went retrograde earlier this year and Neptune followed suit on 23 June. These outer planets are slower-moving celestial bodies with longer retrograde periods that will last throughout the next few months. Their energies have a subtle effect, causing you to question your sense of being.

My favourite things GETTING OUT IN THE BUSH

Photo Kerrie Brewer

Whether on the Ridge near our house or in Tidbinbilla or Namadgi on weekends, bushwalking was our favourite thing to do together before we had Paul. Now we love sharing it with him – he takes us exploring bush tracks and, like his parents, loves a sausage cooked on the camp stove.

THE SOUTH COAST Like many Canberrans, we have a South Coast spot we like to think of as ‘ours’ and ours is Gerringong. Holidays there are among my most special memories of childhood and it remains a favourite place to visit. I will not concede to my Queensland-born husband that the water is cold or that Noosa has anything more to offer.

CANBERRA’S CAFES

Alicia Payne MP Federal Member for Canberra

Alicia Payne was elected to the redistributed Federal seat of Canberra at the 2019 Federal election. She grew up in Canberra and now lives in O’Connor with her husband Ben and son Paul. They are looking forward to welcoming a new baby to the family in September. Before entering politics, Alicia worked as an economist at NATSEM, publishing on issues of poverty and the impact of policy on households, at the Commonwealth Treasury, and as a social policy adviser to the Federal Labor Opposition. She also volunteered for many years in the community sector. “I have always been driven by wanting to find policy answers to address poverty and inequality – and this is key to why I became a Labor politician. To represent the caring and progressive community where I grew up is a great honour and responsibility, and nothing has demonstrated this responsibility more than what our community has gone through so far this year.”

Coffee is essential in my view. Canberra has so many brilliant cafés to visit, including those with fascinating histories like Tilley’s (Lyneham) which required groups to include at least one woman when it opened in 1984 or Gus’s (Civic) that pioneered alfresco dining in 1967.

PLAYUP Becoming a parent has shown me how exclusionary most ‘grown-up’ activities can actually be for children and therefore families – it’s something I think we can do better at in Australia. MoAD have done an amazing job of incorporating a child’s perspective and enjoyment into the museum, making it a fun experience for everyone.

A GOOD CONVERSATION I am a people person and getting the chance to catch up with family and friends is one of the things I love to do most. It’s also one of the things I love most about my job – meeting so many Canberrans and hearing about the great work they do or things that matter to them.
