thursday 01 october 2020

Greetings, dear reader. I trust my musings this week find you as well as possible in these uncertain times. There was a spark of excitement in the office on Tuesday over news that another air travel bubble is set to take flight. Described as “a local Canberra business”, Link Airways will be operating direct flights between Canberra and Hobart from December, possibly earlier if the Tassie border reopens to the ACT before then (full story, page 8). Add to this last month’s re-opening of air travel between Canberra and Queensland and South Australia, without quarantine requirements, and continuing open borders between ACT and NSW, and there is a glimmer of light at the end of the COVID restrictions tunnel (as long as it’s not an oncoming train!). My philosophy is to celebrate each of these steps as a win on our strange journey through 2020 … Reasons to be grateful this past week include catching up with dear friends and meeting their adorable rambunctious new puppy (is there anything cuter?), a tasty chickpea curry shared with a friend, pink-lipped clouds suspended above a melon horizon at dusk, my siblings caring for our ageing parents in Far North Queensland and the reopening of air travel to the Sunshine State without the need for quarantine so I can see them soon. Take care one and all,

Canberra Airport’s head of aviation Michael Thomson (left) and Link Airways airline manager Jeff Boyd were pleased to announce direct flights between Canberra and Hobart will start in December.

New direct flights link Canberra and Hobart Canberra Airport has added yet another route out of the national capital as borders continue to reopen, with a carrier locked in to fly direct to Hobart from December. Link Airways will provide four flights each week between Canberra and Hobart from 3 December, with the possibility of an earlier departure if the Tasmanian

Government opens its border to ACT residents before its set date of 1 December. Canberra Airport’s head of aviation Michael Thomson welcomed the news on Tuesday (29 September), so soon after direct routes to the Queensland Sunshine Coast began last Friday (25 September).

“Our research has shown 55,000 people in 2018 travelled between Canberra and Hobart, and that route has increased in numbers by about 7% year on year,” Mr Thomson said. “We’re excited to partner with a local Canberra business to connect travellers with Tasmania. “It is the second airline in less than a week to announce new services from the capital, adding further confidence that we are restarting aviation in Canberra.” The 34-passenger Saab 340B Plus Aircraft will initially fly four times per week, with plans for the service to grow to 11 return flights weekly by 2021. The direct flight time between the two capital cities will be two hours, shedding up to three hours from previous trips that included a stopover. Link Airways airline manager Jeff Boyd said the service would be a perfect fill to the void in travel in recent months. “We believe we have the right-sized aircraft to provide the frequency of services that people

need,” he said. “We believe our service is the perfect one for people who have that pent-up demand to travel – in both directions, from Canberra and Tasmania.” ACT Labor leader Andrew Barr previously said the Tasmanian Premier had indicated opening their borders to certain states and territories before 1 December. Link Airways will look to bring the commencement of flights forward if that decision is made. Mr Thomson said Canberra Airport was still in discussions with multiple carriers about flights from Canberra. “I think COVID times have really required airlines and airports to do things differently and we are continuing to do that,” he said. “We would love to see more destinations come on as borders start opening. There are lots of opportunity and lots of discussions going on there.” Tickets from 3 December are available online now and prices start from $219 one way. - Danielle Meddemmen

‘Up the milk’: iconic Raiders sponsor back for 2021 One of Canberra’s worst kept secrets was announced earlier this week (Monday 28 September), with foundation sponsor Canberra Milk set to be the Canberra Raiders’ front of jersey sponsor for the 2021 season. Capitol Chilled Foods have stepped in for what looks likely to be a single season, placing Canberra Milk on the front of the Raiders jersey after Chinese technology company Huawei ended their near decade-long sponsorship a month ago. That decision left the Raiders in a tough spot given their onfield and training clothing needs to be manufactured and imported by November. “We hit a bad patch there a month ago and they stepped straight up,” Raiders CEO Don Furner said of Capitol Chilled Foods. “To have two iconic brands 8

back together, back on the front, is fantastic for Canberra and fantastic for us.” Managing director of Capitol Chilled Foods Australia, Steve Ness, said they were in negotiations to update their sleeve logo when front of jersey came up. “They approached us and we jumped in straight away,” he said. “Next year is our 50th anniversary. What better way to celebrate this than by returning our flagship brand Canberra Milk to the front of jersey of Canberra’s premier sporting team.” With the Raiders “highly likely” to secure a new principal sponsor for season 2022 onward and negotiations with “interested parties already taking place”, the Green Machine’s 2021 ‘milk’ merchandise will be coveted. The Green Machine’s home and away jumpers both feature solid navy

blue across the chest and shoulders with a current Canberra Milk logo the colouring a move away from the solid lime green donned by the club since 2002. The enduring image of Mal Meninga celebrating his 1994 grand final swansong win in his jersey emblazoned with the iconic Canberra Milk logo will be brought back to life 27 years on in a ‘heritage jersey’. The solid green heritage strip features a nostalgic mid-1990s era solid Canberra Milk logo and is sure to sell out fast when pre-sales open in November. “I remember this great jumper here,” Raiders coach Ricky Stuart said posturing toward the heritage strip. “I played in it myself. “When I heard about the discussions taking place and saw the garment artwork featuring the

Raiders coach Ricky Stuart said the club’s 2021 kit with Canberra Milk returning as front of jersey sponsor evokes memories of Canberra’s golden era, of which he played a big part. Getty.

news If you’re yet to see the bright orange e-scooters available for hire around town, I could argue that you live under a rock. The Neuron’s next-generation N3 e-scooters recently made their debut in Canberra ready for you (and me) to zoom around the Inner North, Inner South and Belconnen. Heading out to experience them happened in two parts: the first was beside Lake Burley Griffin. I saw a lone e-scooter with my name on it, approached it and followed the instructions on the handlebars to download the Neuron app to my phone. After waiting patiently for the download and filling in some details, I handed over my card details in anticipation of scooting around while our photographer took snaps. Instead, when I was all set up and ready to scan the QR code to

get motoring, a robotic voice told me the scooter was out of battery and to choose another. According to Neuron, the e-scooter batteries last for around 50–60km before needing to be recharged, which can be done conveniently on the street. Queue part two when I found another e-scooter in Manuka and, with the app already downloaded, scanned the QR code to get started. Once you scan in, the appcontrolled ‘helmet lock’ is released and, when unclipped from the scooter, your journey can begin. After that it’s simple: give yourself a little kick-off, then press the accelerator on the handlebars to get going. The scooters can reach a maximum of 25km per hour (I went the non-experienced speed of 15km per hour), and the system’s

geofencing controls designated slow, no-ride and no-parking zones. You can end your ride by parking the scooter in a designated parking zone and clipping the helmet back into its lock. Priced at $1 to unlock the e-scooter and 38 cents per minute after, it’s not a bad deal. There is even a subscription service for regular users. The first 750 scooters were rolled out on 19 September and are set to create 75 local jobs for maintenance and sanitising during COVID-19. Neuron has also confirmed low levels of vandalism of their e-scooters across Australia, and no cases of them ending up in Lake Burley Griffin yet. In the Terms of Service, any broken riding rules may incur a ‘convenience fee’, labelled as representing “some or all of the

Police seek witnesses to fatal stabbing An 18-year-old man died and a 16-year-old boy was “recovering well” in hospital after suffering stab wounds in a fight, which involved as many as 12 people, at a skate park in Weston in the early hours of Sunday morning, 27 September. ACT policing said while no charges had yet been laid (as at Tuesday afternoon 29 September), they had spoken to numerous people and amassed a “significant” amount of information on the evening’s events prior to the attack. “This death is extremely distressing,” an ACT Policing spokesperson said. “A number of people have come forward already, but we would like everyone involved to come forward. “We’ll work with them; we’d like to talk about how the incident played out. “If you think someone you know may be involved, please encourage them to come forward.” ACT Policing said the white Toyota owned by the 18-yearold deceased male was being forensically examined for DNA and they were canvassing the area for CCTV footage. They said the incident was

“absolutely not gang related” as there was no information or evidence for that and at this stage there was no evidence of drugs being involved. However, they confirmed the two victims were known to each other. ACT Policing also downplayed questions about a lack of police presence in the area and said the distressing element of the incident was that it “happened in our community at all”. “This is a very serious incident; we’ll take it very seriously and follow every lead, find out who is responsible and take them before the court,” the spokesperson said. “It’s a tragic situation, the families are affected, police dealing with the families are affected.” ACT Policing said the exact reasons the group of youths – aged 16 to adult – were at the park is still “part of the investigation” but urged parents to be diligent in supervising their kids. Anyone who has information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website (quote reference P2001072). Information can be provided anonymously.

news Turning 50, Botanic Gardens create Banksia Garden In a year marked by smokewaves, a hailstorm and pandemic restrictions, the Australian National Botanical Gardens is celebrating its 50th anniversary by creating a new garden dedicated to one of Australia’s most beloved and iconic plants – the banksia. “They’re so tactical and textural and you can see throughout the garden we’re not just planting plants here, we’re using the leaf shapes and motifs all throughout the walls and the structures because they’re so engaging,” the Gardens’ curator of living collections, Dave Taylor told Canberra Weekly. Scattered amongst the garden’s various decorations include a rusted corten steel wall feature that resembles an iconic Australia Post stamp, and a nod to May Gibbs’ iconic Banksia Men. The Banksia Garden celebrates its namesake by showcasing a wide selection of the over-170 species spread across most of Australia’s coasts and hinterlands. “The garden really reflects banksia from all across the country, including species from Kakadu

in the Northern Territory,” Mr Taylor said. Canberra Weekly visited while Mr Taylor and some of the Gardens’ staff were out planting several of the “really unusual” species from WA that were described as “plants with special needs”. “They’re typically very hard to grow on this side of the country,” he said. Some of the measures taken include creating large mounds for some WA banksias growing on their own roots, with drainage in some places up to 4m deep in very free-draining soil. “We have some that are growing from seedlings but have others that have been grafted onto root stocks from the eastern species, which are much more durable and adaptable to the soils here,” Mr Taylor said. They’ve also created their own pasteurised soils where the steaming process has removed any root rotting pathogens. “Some people say this is extreme horticulture, but these are plants with special needs,” he said. It is anticipated that some of the banksias,

particularly those from warmer climates like WA and the NT, will also struggle with Canberra’s chilly winters. Mr Taylor and his team have employed a few measures to ensure they can mitigate the cold by potting some and moving them under shelter in winter, and utilising north-facing walls. The idea for the garden was conceived about two years ago. Since then, the team have been at work developing, planning and then creating the garden with the help of experts from across the country. - Denholm Samaras

The icing on the cake: get baking for RSPCA Cupcake Day It’s that time of year again, where we take to the kitchen and whip up our best baking creations in the name of a good cause. The RSPCA’s annual Cupcake Day is just around the corner, and the organisation is in desperate need of support after a tough year of running shelter operations in the face of COVID-19, with supplementary income and fundraising way down. “It’s been really, really tough in our world,” said RSPCA ACT CEO Michelle Robertson. “We’re always reliant on fundraising, but this year … the stakes are even higher. “We’ve not been able to do any of our face-toface fundraising, the way we have done [previously]. We couldn’t have the Million Paws Walk, we can’t have Cupcake Day [in the usual format]; those are our two major events that we have.” While the official Cupcake Day this year falls on Monday 26 October, people are encouraged to hold a COVID-safe fundraiser on any day this month to support the RSPCA’s shelter

operations. The RSPCA is encouraging events such as a virtual Cupcake Day or a sociallydistanced event in the office. Ms Robertson said “every single dollar that we make goes straight into running the shelter”, to support the around 131 animals currently in the care of RSPCA ACT. She said while the number of incoming animals is down slightly from last year, complaints to the inspectorate are “creeping up” after a steady number during the pandemic shutdowns. “That is worrying; we don’t want people to not do the right thing by their animal. But we absolutely want people to tell us if they see somebody doing the wrong thing.” RSPCA ACT has also seen an increase in people looking to be pet parents while spending more time at home. “It was during the beginning period of COVID, we saw adoptions nearly triple, it was crazy,” Ms Robertson said. “It’s settled a bit, but every week we get

people asking and we don’t know when animals are going to come in or what’s going to come in. “Across the board, in the ACT, nationally and internationally too, there certainly has been a huge increase in people wanting to adopt pets, which we think is a good thing.” She called on Canberrans to donate and fundraise to support the animals and the shelter’s

work. She said seeing some ACT teams and individuals on the Cupcake Day leaderboard would just be the icing on the cake. “It’s been such a tough year, but hey we’ve got cupcakes!” For more information or to register your event, visit rspcacupcakeday.com.au - Libby Kimber

Local junior Matt Frawley scored his first try for the Raiders in their 38-28 victory over the Sharks.

A young Canberra Raiders side had no trouble coming up with a win against the Cronulla Sharks last weekend, as coach Ricky Stuart rested the club’s big names in preparation for finals. The third straight win for the Green Machine came at Netsrata Jubilee Stadium, Kogarah, with a final score of 3828. Tom Starling was a standout

GIVIT donation of the week: Seeds Almost a year on from the Black Summer bushfires, communities are working together to rebuild and create a new future for those who lost everything from homes, livelihoods and loved ones. A key part of this rebuilding process is to re-plant vegetable gardens on properties which were destroyed by the fires. This is especially needed this year as it is expected that COVID-19 will impact distribution of fruit and vegetables to regional areas. Not only does the practice of growing produce create self-sustainability, it is also important for the mental health of those who have been affected. A support organisation managing the rebuilding process will be distributing the seeds through community centres who work with bushfire victims directly. The organisation is looking for roughly 300 seeds for a large variety of standard herbs, fruits and vegetables which are suitable for growing in the south coast NSW region. Donations can be delivered or posted to the organisation. To donate, visit givit.org.au/donate-items, search by category “Seeds” to view requests located in your area. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off.

In a clean mixing bowl, whisk the egg whites until they begin to peak, then add the sugar a spoonful at a time, whisking all the while. When all the sugar has been added and the mixture is glossy, gently fold in the cornflour and the vinegar. Spoon the meringue on to the baking trays, spreading it out to make 3 discs. Bake for 1 hour, then switch the oven off and leave the meringues in there to harden for another hour. You want the meringue to be crisp so that it can support the weight of the cream.

You can make the meringue up to 3 days in advance and store it in an airtight container. To make the filling, whip the cream with an electric whisk until peaks form, but take care not to over-whip it, or it will lose that silky quality. Take the first meringue disc and spoon roughly one-third of the cream on top, then sprinkle with one-third of the berries, half the flaked almonds and 1 tablespoon caster sugar. Top with the second layer of meringue and repeat. Top with the third meringue, spoon on the last one-third of the cream and decorate with berries, thyme sprigs and flowers (just make sure they’re not noxious), if you like.

Exploring the Mess of isolation Belco Arts’ latest production, Mess, taps into one of the recurring themes of 2020 – social isolation and withdrawal – through the lens of the phenomenon of the Japanese culturebound syndrome, hikikomori. Director Natsuko Yonezawa told Canberra Weekly her interest in the syndrome was sparked upon learning that a cousin of hers in Japan had socially isolated themselves for 12 years. “In Japan, people withdraw inside their rooms from six months up to decades, and one of my family members has been like this for quite a long time,” she said. “I was really interested to know more about it. I had no idea what it was about and why people became socially withdrawn. “It’s derived from the Japanese language, but it exists everywhere in the world.” After initially exploring hikikomori in a 15-minute piece debuted at Art, Not Apart in 2019, 21-year-old Yonezawa’s debut full-length production allows her

to delve deeper, drawing heavily from the book, The Courage to be Disliked. “Last year’s production was more of a summary, so the audience understood what the phenomemon is,” she said. “Because this one is longer, I can explore more deeply into what it is, so it’s different but the concept is still the social withdrawal but exploring it deeper.” Mess explores its themes through physical theatre, dance and live sound, also utilising light and the use of physical props with stacks of white boxes styled by set designer, byrd, scattered across the stage. Yonezawa developed the work after receiving an invitation from assistant director and Belco Arts live programs officer, Chenoeh Miller, earlier this year to create a work. “We wanted to bring together a group of artists to explore ‘mess’ in our new theatre, as well as testing the capabilities of our lighting rig,” Miller said. Mess will be brought to life by

Performers Christopher Samuel Carroll (second from left) and Miriam Slater, will be accompanied by composer/live musician Marlené Claudine Radice (left) and director Natsuko Yonezawa (right) on the violin.

performers Christopher Samuel Carroll and Miriam Slater, while composer/live musician Marlané Claudine Radice will be accompanied by the multi-talented Yonezawa, who will also play the violin. “I had not originally thought about performing in the production myself, but we were having fun experimenting with sound and what textures we want for each section,” Yonezawa said. “I brought in my violin and thought this was a nice different texture that complemented really well.” Despite Yonezawa’s interest in hikikomori predating the pandemic, Mess has become timely and accessible given the circumstances surrounding 2020. “We’ve all been in a state of isolation. Myself as well, doing uni online and not being able to meet people face to face, it really deteriorated my mental health,” she said. “I got a better understanding of

what the socially withdrawn people like the hikikomori go through, and that extending for prolonged decades … I got a bit of a reality check this year.” Yonezawa’s family came to Australia and settled in Canberra when she was four years old. During her childhood, they moved to Darwin where she got her start in the arts learning ballet before returning to Canberra in 2014 and becoming involved with QL2 Dance. “I didn’t have any idea what contemporary dance was. I was trying to find a ballet school, but I found QL2,” she said. “I was like ‘hey, contemporary dance is so great’, so I’ve done quite a lot of performances with them and then that’s how I got the confidence to start creating my own work.” Mess will be performed at the Belconnen Arts Centre Theatre, 1-2 October; belcoarts.com.au/mess - Denholm Samaras

Philibert Commerson, as his valet and assistant, on Louis Antoine de Bougainville’s famous colonial expedition to the Pacific in 1766–1769. The expedition took her from France to Rio de Janeiro to Tahiti and New Guinea and on to Mauritius where she and Commerson lived for five years before he died in 1773. When she returned to France in 1776, she became the first woman to have circumnavigated the globe and was also recognised by the French Government for her work in collecting exotic plant samples. Clode, who spent her childhood on her parent’s boat, was frustrated by the way that Barrett’s contribution to botany and exploration has been overlooked and set out to find more about her than “the fragmentary traces” that exist in archives. To do so

she interrogated the available evidence and set off on a journey that mirrored Barrett’s. The result is an immensely readable and highly interesting account of Barrett’s life, the author’s journey, and an interesting reflection by Clode on her own nautical childhood. Drawing on a rich array of sources, she brings to life the rigours Barrett must have faced accompanying Commerson on the boat, and vividly describes the experiences of the expedition and the botanical discoveries they made. She brings a sharp historian’s eye to the material and provides a wealth of observations, details and interesting asides, all of which is rendered in Clode’s crisp and entertaining prose. Probably the best and most interesting non-fiction book I have read this year.

Now showing The Goddess of Fortune (18+) In a beautiful but imposing mansion, the screams of young children emanate from behind a large, ornate wooden door. Decades later, on a sunny terrace in Rome, couple Arturo (Stefano Accorsi) and Alessandro (Edoardo Leo) play host at a party celebrating a gay marriage. Suddenly, the couple’s long-time, very close friend Annamaria (Jasmine Trinca) arrives, seeking her friends’ help in caring for her two young children while she is admitted to hospital. Arturo and Alessandro’s carefully constructed life is served a challenge with the entrance of the free-spirited Annamaria. Having to suddenly take care of her children while acknowledging her mortality and their own strained relationship, the duo is forced to take time to give thought to their own wants and reflect on their relationship.

After 15 years together, Arturo and Alessandro lack the passion of their early years, but conversely can share a loving glance that brings on a flood of such memories. Mutual sacrifices made in the past resurface as resentment as the two face their troubles before their friends who live on their own: an elderly single who, while alone, loves herself and her own life, and a couple who fall in love again every day due to the husband’s Alzheimer’s. Travelling to Annamaria’s childhood home, the couple may gain perspective on their issues and learn the cause of Annamaria’s free spirit. Verdict: Shot beautifully throughout Rome, the movie explores the precipice a relationship balances on, and the responsibility of what to do with it. 4 stars. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

Island dreams It’s no secret Australians have fallen in love with kitchen island benches. The long-standing here-to-stay trend lends itself to a casual dining and central entertaining hub suited to our relaxed Aussie lifestyle. Caesarstone shares their top tips for finding the ideal island. WITH HOME EDITOR, CASSANDRA POWER

Consider the profile The options are endless! Choose from slim, sleek shark nose, refined pencil edge, bold graphic apron, or a sophisticated shadow line edge. Then there’s the bullnose, half bullnose, splayed, arris and the lamb’s tongue! Enjoy the exploration.

Make it seamless The secret is in the laminated or mitred join – a means of joining two pieces of Caesarstone permanently and virtually seamlessly. The laminated edge, where two pieces are stacked on top of each other, is the strongest join and creates a bold, robust look.

Storage While aesthetically beautiful, islands also offer great functionality. Modern kitchen island designs create opportunities to increase storage capacity with innovative built-in storage solutions that ensure everything is neatly tucked away.

With so many options, it’s easy to be overwhelmed. Get out of your head and take Caesarstone’s style quiz to help you define your style: caesarstoneus. com/about-us/informationinspiration/design-to-inspire/quizwhat-s-your-caesarstone-style/

Light your way You’ve got your style now it’s time for the right light. Beacon Lighting designer Caetlin Cresswell steps you through the selection process. Whether it is cooking a meal with family or casually sitting at your island with friends, lighting and functionality is a priority as it enhances the aesthetic and decorative elements of kitchens.

Measurements are king Note the total size of the area, ceiling height and countertop dimensions. Consider balance and scale, particularly when it comes to feature lighting.

Find your style

How will you use the space?

Do you lean toward a mid-century modern vibe but are intrigued by the unpolished, urban feel of the industrial aesthetic?

The central hub of the home, the kitchen island bench is utilised for many tasks, from cooking or entertaining to office activities.

Categorise these activities into general lighting, task lighting or accent lighting. These different types of lighting are layered within the space. A design tip is to consider the location of your task areas, such as the sink and cooktop, and lay out your downlights accordingly.

What do you need to consider when selecting lights for a kitchen island? Ideally, match the lighting with the home’s décor style, be it modern, coastal, traditional or industrial. Consider what style or colour the cabinetry and appliances are. If you have white cabinetry and want your pendants to stand out, perhaps choose a solid black fitting that will contrast. You may be limited to a smaller style pendant light if your ceilings are low. A general rule to follow is to consider a suspension length of at least double the pendant’s shade height.

Are there design tips or specific products that you would recommend for a kitchen island? To think outside the box, consider the

layout of the island. There may be a sink, or seating area with bar stools to one end, where a single oversized pendant or a cluster of smaller pendants can be placed to one side of the bench. This allows you to mix shapes, sizes, colour and style of pendants to create your own feature.

Top three tips

1

Lighting design is all about two things: practicality and aesthetic. Consider the functionality of your lighting choice as much as the style and look. When unsure about the scale of pendants in your kitchen, make a paper/cardboard cut-out to true size and play around with different heights and configurations. Some lighting stores will also allow you to take the pendant home to ensure it is a good match. Consider all light sources in your kitchen and how they work holistically to provide sufficient light for the space. For example, you may already have sufficient general lighting in the area which can then allow you to select a pendant style with a covered shade for your island. It is about creating balance between the general, task and ambient layers of lighting in the space.

In the popular, family-friendly suburb of Hackett is this rare gem, a five-bedroom family home on offer for the first time in four decades. “It is rare to find a five-bedroom home in Hackett that has hasn’t been fully renovated, so the size on offer for families wanting to make Hackett their home is brilliant,” says Christine Shaw, licensed agent and principal at Christine Shaw Properties. “We simply couldn’t find any comparable sales, even going all the way back to 2017.” Shaw says the ideal buyer is a family currently living in a smaller home and looking to upgrade to somewhere with more bedrooms and the potential to put their stamp on the property with their own renovations. “The home is perfect to live in now,” she says, “but there are so many options for the new owner to add their own capital growth to the value of the home”. The home was constructed in 1964 and extended in the 1980s. It boasts two living areas, a kitchen and dining hub and five bedrooms, three with built-in robes. The main bathroom includes a bath and toilet, with a separate

powder room on the opposite side of the house. Many of the home’s distinctive features have been preserved, such as the retro kitchen and cornices. “The 1964 retro orange laminate in the kitchen is still in great condition!” Shaw says. Large windows allow light to stream in and take in the views to the front and back gardens with established trees and space for the kids to play. “Stanley Street is a quiet loop street with a beautiful park just 100m away in one direction and the Hackett Shops just 200m away in the other direction,” Shaw says. “No traffic, and a street with new build homes as well as beautifully renovated homes.”

Weekly market wrap Can the ACT’s property market continue momentum? The Federal Government has announced scrapping responsible lending laws allowing lenders to simplify approval processes. This decision places the onus back on borrowers to provide accurate information rather than on banks to forensically investigate an applicant’s living expenses. Improving access to credit could play a large role in freeing up the market in Canberra, which is currently constrained by lack of stock. For the last few months, Canberra’s auction market has been extremely robust generating the highest capital city clearance rate for many weeks. Domain reported an 85% preliminary clearance rate on Saturday 26 September indicating an overwhelming majority of properties taken to auction are sold under the hammer or prior to auction. Many properties not selling at auction are sold within days post auction, demonstrated by the stream of smiling vendors, buyers and agents putting sold stickers on signboards. Over the next few months, as access to credit improves, I anticipate a high proportion of people will start to consider upgrading. Those who have not reviewed their mortgage for 12 or more months may be surprised to see they could potentially increase their loan by a couple of hundred thousand dollars without significantly increasing their repayment. Over the last decade, relentlessly consistent market conditions have broadly increased property values across Canberra, meaning some people will find they are in a significantly superior equity position to

where they may have initially thought. Market conditions have aligned to provide significant advantage to those considering moving into a larger home. People upgrading their homes often sell the one they currently live in, potentially increasing the number of listings on the market and opportunities for first home buyers. In an already competitive environment delivering exceptionally strong results across all price points, can the property market in Canberra continue momentum after months of strong auction clearance rates? Yes, and easily. Canberra’s market has behaved as expected for all but a few weeks. Lenders arming borrowers with increased debt via a simplified application process without necessarily increasing their repayments to service the debt could provide a gentle stoking of the market to wean off some of the stimulus finishing late this year. Canberra has higher housing affordability than nearly all other capital cities providing lower risks of the market heating up too much. This creates potential in the off-plan market too. Astute buyers of off-plan properties may be able to secure a $25,000 HomeBuilder Grant and ACT Government stamp duty concession or discount plus end up settling in an environment where lenders are improving access to credit. Across the market broadly, current conditions are creating plenty of positive sentiment.

Canberra developer Geocon was the only ACT entry in the annual list of the nation’s 100 largest residential builders. The construction giant was named in the HIA-Colorbond Steel Housing 100 report, which covers the 2019/20 financial year. “ACT apartment builder Geocon was again the only home-grown entry from the nation’s capital in the list of Australia’s biggest builders, this year rounding out the top 20, down from 11th in the previous report,” said HIA executive director ACT, Greg Weller. “Geocon was fifth nationally in the list of Australia’s biggest apartment builders. This was down from fourth place last year, with the company starting 1,081 homes during the 12 months to 30 June 2020.”

Ohana breaks ground Construction has officially begun on Core Developments’ luxury apartments at Batemans Bay NSW. Dubbed Ohana, the development will comprise one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments on the corner of Beach Road and Herarde Street in Batemans Bay and is expected to create a number of jobs in a region that’s felt the effects of both bushfires and COVID-19 in 2020. “It is important for us to show the local community that Core is invested in Batemans Bay beyond the project,” says Core Developments’ construction director, Jon Anastasov. With interiors designed by the renowned Mon Palmer, the development will include a choice of three interior schemes, rooftop garden and a pool. For more information, visit ohanaapartments.com.au

celebrity birthday BRIE LARSON 1 October 1989 The year ahead is a time for inner growth for Brie, for finding what makes her tick and what she needs to make her happy. Selfawareness and discovery are all emphasised during the coming year. This is not the best year for romantic interests, rather a time for strong contemplation and one where she will be spending time on her own. To achieve happiness with her loved ones she must avoid jumping to conclusions. Then she will be able to enjoy herself without getting hurt.

attitude.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

Tread carefully this week, Libra. While you might feel an urge to confront and control an ugly situation with friends and family, your involvement may only make things worse. Slow down, step back, and approach conversations in the right frame of mind.

If you’re always on the move, this might be a good time for you to take a beat and reassess how your current routine is serving you. Ensure you are setting yourself up for success in all areas of your life. Tread carefully with any new relationships – you don’t want to offend anyone straight off the bat.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY

Practicality rules this week, Leo! Be sure to use your head not your heart when making big decisions or purchases and consider consulting a trusted confidante if you feel your emotions could get the better of you. This is a good time for reunions with family and friends.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

Sunshine is on the horizon, and you’ll be ready to burst forth into the new week with a renewed energy and zest for life. It’s time to go for what you want and be successful – you deserve it. Take advantage of any opportunities for self-reflection to help you on your path.

Work could throw you a few curveballs this week, Aquarius, but your downtime will more than make up for a lack of fun in the professional space. This is great time to enjoy a good book; try something you wouldn’t normally read and you might surprise yourself.

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

Sometimes you can only devote time to yourself, and that’s okay! You are number one this week, with time to spend on whatever makes you happy. This could rub some people the wrong way, so take care to explain yourself carefully to avoid ruffling any feathers.

This might be a good time to get your debts in order, put your head down and work towards those goals, whether they be professional, personal or romantic. Opening up to new people could bode well for you, with the possibility of love on the horizon.

Everything will be coming up trumps, Taurus, including work, love and creative pursuits. Your energy this week will see others respond positively to your requests and you’ll find your groove with consistency and a new routine. Others may try to take care of you – let them.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE Fasten your seatbelt and prepare for some turbulence in your life this week. Rather than trying to push back against the universe, try to relax and let the chips fall where they may. A good laugh could be just the thing you need.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT Plans could change on you unexpectedly, and you’ll take it all in your stride as you adopt a more relaxed approach this week. You might find that it’s you who slips up on details like dates, times and names, so when others make the same mistake in future you should go gently on them.
