An old maxim holds that the pessimist sees the glass as half-empty while the optimist sees it as half-full. While I’ve generally thought of myself as a glass halffull kind of human, in recent years I’ve become aware of a third option (there are always at least three options, according to a professional development course convenor from the 1980s): meliorism. Defined as that comfortable place between pessimism and optimism, a meliorist believes their actions can bring about a better future. Meliorists want to make the world a better place.

news Support protects ACT residents from food insecurity Rapid relief from the ACT Government and the community sector may have spared Canberra residents from some food insecurities being faced by Australians nationally. The annual Foodbank Hunger Report released on Monday 12 October showed the number of Australians seeking food relief at least once per week had increased from 15% to 31% this year. However, St Vincent de Paul Canberra/Goulburn director of special works, Erin Macarthur, said the organisation hadn’t seen a large increase in demand for its food services. “I suppose with Canberra we have been fortunate with COVID in the sense of food provision because the whole of the community and government helped the most vulnerable,” she said. “What was wonderful is there was a lot of rapid response from the community sector and government.
“We were grateful for our team and working with government in providing emergency relief and keeping the most vulnerable safe.” The report also showed three in 10 Australians who had previously not faced food insecurity, had experienced it since the beginning of the pandemic in March. Foodbank NSW & ACT CEO, Gerry Andersen, said the research taken between April and August showed the effects of COVID-19 on the wider community. “The report highlights that, while need for food relief has become somewhat erratic and unpredictable, charities are reporting that overall demand is up by 47% and many of those now experiencing food insecurity (28%) have never before needed support,” he said. “Those who were struggling before Coronavirus hit have been impacted more quickly and seriously than others.”

Foodbank NSW & ACT had also reported seeing new demographics facing food insecurity, including those aged between 18 and 25, casual employees and international students. In the report, 35% of food secure Australians reported not expecting to cope when additional
government support for the pandemic ceases. Ms Macarthur said St Vincent de Paul has seen the increased JobSeeker payments as welcome relief for many Australians and would support a higher rate in the future. - Danielle Meddemmen
Concern history will ‘slip through our fingers’ Canberra-based volunteers of the Kosciuszko Huts Association (KHA) are concerned history will “slip through our fingers” with the inability to rebuild historic huts destroyed in the 2020 Orroral Valley bushfires. Namadgi National Park’s Demandering and Max & Berts huts were severely burnt in the fires, but KHA Vice President Anthony Hunter said an ACT Parks and Conservation regime doesn’t allow volunteers to replace them. “Under the regime ACT Parks work under, Notre Dame wouldn’t be rebuilt because it would be too 10

badly damaged,” he said. “That has led to the huts getting down to such low levels, and we are increasingly concerned that it will slip through our fingers. “When the huts aren’t replaced, people don’t go to those areas and the stories that go with the lives of the people who built and lived there fade from the public memory.” Upwards of 20 huts are scattered across Namadgi National Park built as early as the 1800s, many of which are along the Bicentennial Trail and tell the story of non-Indigenous people in
the region. Many are used by bushwalkers and riders as temporary shelter and rest stops, rangers in the national parks or just visited by locals and tourists. The volunteer organisation has written to both ACT major parties and has been rallying for the policy to change. “We are lobbying the ACT Government to reflect upon the policy and have a change at heart,” Mr Hunter said. “We had seen a number of huts not replaced or being replaced with interpretative shelters
which we don’t think is a suitable response. “Neither of [the major parties] would commit to a rebuild of the huts and the current government talk about and used heritage works around restorations but they never mention the word rebuild.” The organisation is now hoping a petition through its members and the community will help in its fight to rebuild the historic huts. news ACT insulated from Budget blows Touted as a big-spending, job-focused Federal Budget, the Morrison Government’s big-ticket items included a wage subsidy for young workers, a gas industry cash injection and personal income tax cuts aimed at stimulating spending. Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese’s Budget Reply countered with structural change in childcare subsidies, the expansion of Commonwealth social housing stock and establishment of a federal anticorruption commission and centre for disease control. Associate Professor Ben Phillips from the Australian National University Social Research Centre said Canberra households were likely to do “better than most” from the Budget, because ACT incomes were higher than most other cities and regions. “The tax cuts tend to mostly benefit middle- and high-income households
and Canberra has a relatively high share of higher income households,” he said. As expected, the already reduced $250 JobSeeker supplement will end in December. One million Australians became unemployed during the Coronavirus recession, but ABS Labour force statistics show a bounce-back, with the return of 111,000 jobs reducing the unemployment rate to 6.8%. These job figures reflect a “twospeed economy” between Victoria and the rest of the country and do not account for the steady rate of underemployment (worked at least one hour a fortnight) of 11.2%. Associate Professor Phillips said “ideally” the Budget would have committed to a permanent increase in the JobSeeker payment. “This would be beneficial to the millions of unemployed persons
around the country during COVID. To some extent, Canberra is insulated from this, though, with our relatively low unemployment rate,” he said. ANU Professor in Higher Education Policy, Andrew Norton, was surprised by the Government’s onceoff billion-dollar university research funding but said he expect universities in the ACT to get around $70 million. However, Professor Norton noted that budget week also saw the Government’s Job-ready Graduates legislation pass through the Senate. It redistributes the cost of degrees away from delivery cost towards national employment priorities. “It will reduce the average per-student funding rate by 6%,” Professor Norton said. “This will cause long-term problems for all public universities.” - Cassandra Power
Voters flock to polls early For the political junkies among us, the ritual of spending a Saturday in line with your fellow citizens participating in democracy and eating a sausage, may have changed forever. Around half of all the ACT’s registered voters have already made up their mind and cast their vote this election. As at Tuesday 13 October, 129,040 people had voted at an early voting centre and another 21,580 postal votes had arrived at Elections ACT – bringing the total progressive vote count to 150,620 or 49.8% of the enrolment. That represents a significant increase on the 2016 figures of 83,743 early votes and 16,925 postal votes. The increase comes after a push from Elections ACT to vote early to stay COVID-Safe.

Australian National Botanic Gardens celebrates 50 golden years
W
ith the Australian National Botanic Gardens turning 50 this month, the significant milestone serves as a reminder to reflect on the Gardens’ rich history and look forward to the bright future awaiting it. Established as Australia’s first solely native botanic gardens, it remains the only one of its kind in the country to this day. “It’s not common in the world for botanic gardens to represent national flora only,” said the Gardens’ Executive Director, Dr Judy West. Dr West explained the Gardens were designed primarily as a scientific institution, with the location on Black Mountain alongside the CSIRO and ANU a “very deliberate decision”. “We’ve maintained that scientific basis of the Gardens along the lines
of knowing that we know where the plants in the gardens are from,” she said. “They’re also linked to seeds in our long-term seedbank, which allows for conservation research on threatened species.” In 2015, a masterplan for the Gardens was established, which primarily looked at infrastructure and gave thought to its evolution over the next 20 years. The two biggest major infrastructure items for development under the masterplan include a new National Seedbank and the new Ian Potter National Conservatory, with construction set to start on both projects in 2021. Dr West said the seedbank will be important for the Gardens from a scientific point of view, given a number of new technologies, such

as cryostorage, will be built into the design. “It’s very timely to be developing the new seedbank … it’s a major excitement for us and it will change the way we do that work and be a more efficient way for us to run. “We’re currently in two demountables and a caretaker’s cottage … the seeds are very safe, but space is cramped and reaching capacity.” The conservatory will be set in an architecturally stunning glass box and will allow the Gardens to display a host of native tropical plants right here in Canberra, including flora all the way from Far North Queensland, Kakadu and Christmas Island. “It will feature a lot of plants, things people won’t ever get to see in their lifetime in the wild,” Dr West said. “It’s going to be pretty spectacular; it’s already won architectural awards without being built. “It’s a development phase for us that’s going to be very intense but a great way to go,” Dr West said. “We’re hoping it will be a major
attraction for Canberra.” To celebrate the 50-year milestone, Gardens staff had planned a host of events to run over the course of 2020, however most had been cancelled. Since reopening in May following a hail and smoke interrupted start to the year and then a COVID mandated closure, Dr West said they’ve noticed a significant uptick in visitation, with a lot of Canberrans “rediscovering the Gardens”. “It offers people a safe way to be healthy and look after their wellbeing,” she said. “Currently the Gardens are looking fantastic and the amount of flowering is pretty amazing. “I think the rain we’ve had has helped with the plants looking happy – even ones stripped during the hail storm are looking healthy.” Dr West said visitation has steadily built up to the point that for the month of September they were only down 5% year-on-year for visitation. “We usually get a lot of interstate and international visitors so it’s great that Canberrans are supporting us and coming to see us,” she said.

news Young climate activist leading the way Dhani Gilbert could be described as many things, but the first that comes to mind is passionate. She’s a passionate Wiradjuri woman, a passionate climate activist, and passionate about the volunteer work she does through Landcare ACT. “I come from Wiradjuri country in Central NSW and caring for country had always been a big part of things growing up,” Dhani said. “I have been able to care for country through different initiatives like cultural mosaic burning and weeding. I have always been surrounded by it and I want to be able to share that with other people.” Dhani was recognised in the 2019 Austcover Young Landcare Leadership Award for her passion, including her work experience with Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve wildlife team. She is now working with other
ambassadors to organise an inaugural Landcare Youth Summit at Parliament House, hoping to connect young people with her passion for climate and land. “Part of it came about from wanting to be able to engage people in Landcare and give them resources to lead their own group,” she said. “Young people are actually really interested in looking after our natural environment, they just need the resources to be able to do that. “But also, this is a great opportunity for students to get involved and ask the panellists and participants questions.” Due to COVID-19, the event was postponed from earlier in the year and will now take place virtually on 1 December. However, you might wonder when the 18-year-old has time between her double degree in Science and
Environment and Sustainability at the Australian National University and a Graduate Certificate in Wiradjuri Language, Culture and Heritage through Charles Sturt University. She said finding the time for something you’re passionate about is easy and hopes her interest in science communication helps to break down the barrier between the subject and young people. “People are seeking opportunities to engage but sometimes the opportunities seem like they are a bit outside of our reach,” she said. “Sometimes in spaces young people don’t feel comfortable because they’re dominated by older people or people we can’t relate to and I think that’s one of the best parts about Landcare. It makes it appealing to young people and shows them they can get involved too.”

Dhani said caring for our natural land was the only way forward. “I think Landcare is really important because it plays a role in helping to protect our natural environment,” she said. “Caring for land is going to be a big part in ensuring future generations can deal with challenges faced due to the climate crisis.” - Danielle Meddemmen

cover story The Gardens turn 50 this month Originally opened on 20 October 1970, the Australian National Botanic Gardens turns 50 this month, and is celebrating in a subdued fashion due to the pandemic. Having initially been considered in the early 1930s, it was picked up post World War II by South Australian research forester Lindsay Pryor, who then championed the project until the late 1950s. By 1967, the Gardens opened to the public with interpretive signs placed along the paths to complement the extensive labelling of plants, but even after decades of planning it wasn’t until 1970 that the Gardens were officially opened by then Prime Minister, John Gorton. It was nearly 40 years in the making, and now 50 years after opening, the Gardens is celebrating the golden milestone - staff had planned a host of events to run over the course of 2020, however most have been cancelled. director Dr Judy West told Canberra Weekly she has noticed a significant uptake in visitors as we’ve moved into spring and encouraged people to get along and take it all in at this magnificent time of the year. “One of the things we don’t quite know why, but since opening up after COVID in May we’ve seen high visitation,” she said. “People rediscovered us.” There’s a lot more to the Gardens than meets the eye on a wander through. It has been designed and established as a scientific institution; its location on the slopes of Black Mountain near the ANU and CSIRO is no accident. “It’s still the only botanic garden that’s totally native in Australia and it’s not common in the world for gardens to represent national flora only,” Dr West said. To this day, the Gardens continue to serve an important role with respect to conservation and research. “With the recovery response from bushfires, we’ve been able to assist greatly with information on seeds and how you grow them looking at species

that have been heavily burnt,” Dr West said. “In analysis done after the fires, we’ve used information not just from living plants in the Gardens but also our databases indicating where species come from.” Looking ahead, Dr West said the Gardens will continue to flourish in the safe hands of their highly qualified staff across horticulture, science, visitor experience and communications, and of course, with the generosity of the Friends of the Botanic Gardens. - Denholm Samaras

news Lifeline calls increase by 17% Lifeline Canberra has welcomed 50 additional volunteer crisis support workers to their newly created COVID-safe phone room, to address a 17% increase in calls from September 2019 to September 2020. Lifeline CEO Carrie Leeson said a $75,000 ACT Government grant enabled the additional volunteers to be brought on board and was an acknowledgment of their efforts and outcomes as demand continued to grow. “Every call answered has the potential to save a life or change the lives of Australians in
need,” she said. “To our amazing Telephone Crisis Supporters, thank you for all you do. We welcome the new Crisis Supporters to the Lifeline Canberra Team as they join the existing team of hundreds.” It takes volunteers a minimum of 170 hours to be accredited and the training requires e-learning, observational shifts, logged hours and coaching sessions. Lifeline is non-judgemental, confidential and accessible at all times. Lifeline’s highly skilled Telephone Crisis Supporter Volunteers are here to listen; call 13 11 14.
Canberra Nara Foodie Weekend The Canberra Nara Candle Festival will look a little different this year (thanks, COVID), but Canberrans are still encouraged to get involved with the new-look proceedings which culminate in Itadakimasu: the Canberra Nara Foodie Weekend. Itadakimasu – meaning “let’s eat!” in Japanese – will see Japanese restaurants from casual to fine dining throw open their doors to celebrate Canberra’s sister city relationship with the Japanese city of Nara from Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 October. Venues from the likes of fine
dining restaurants Raku, Iori and Lazy Su will be participating in the weekend, along with more casual venues such as Mookie, Soi Noodle Bar, Gyoza Guy and more. The candle ceremony this year will be held at the Embassy of Japan as a private ceremony, and while the outdoor candle display won’t light up Lennox Gardens, Canberrans are encouraged to enjoy the outdoors in Canberra Nara Peace Park and strike the Rotary Peace Bell on Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October. Floriade blooms go to good homes Floriade is over for another year, having been ‘Reimagined’ in 2020 with bulbs planted across Canberra as the usual event was unable to go ahead in Commonwealth Park due to COVID-19. More than 90 community groups helped plant and care for the flowers that made up the tulip trail through the suburbs, brightening up local shopping centres and precincts and bringing a little piece of the world-famous flower festival to every corner of Canberra. The Canberra community really engaged with and got behind the Floriade: Reimagined format this year, however next year’s festival still has a question mark hanging over it. A spokesperson for Events ACT said while the Canberra community

was on board with the ‘Reimagined’ format, the decision for the 2021 event “will be a matter for the incoming Government”. As for this year’s flowers, worry not – the one million bubs and annuals planted across the city won’t go to waste. The bulbs planted in community gardens will be donated to the community groups involved in their planting, with many of the bulbs to stay in the ground or be replanted next winter. Plantings in Woden Town Park, Casey roundabout, Kippax Library and Kingston will remain in place, while the City Hill blooms will remain until the next planned planting. The spokesperson for Events ACT said flowers from planter boxes and potted displays were being turned into bouquets and gifted to hospitals and nursing homes across the city. “Events ACT ask that the Canberra community respects this process and leaves the flowers to be removed only by the Floriade team to brighten the day of those in hospitals, nursing homes and hospices,” they said. try on the board for the Raiders, grounding the ball under the posts after a pass from Jordan Rapana. Joe Tapine celebrated his hundredth game for the Canberra side with a try to boot, taking the score to 16-0. James Tedesco scored a try late in the first half to bring the Roosters back into the contest and Joey Manu scored first after the break to bring them back to within 16-12 with plenty of time still on the clock. The Raiders managed to hit back after Tedesco was wrongfooted by the bounce of the ball and slipped over, which allowed Jack Wighton to ground the ball and extend the Raiders’ lead to 10 (22-12). Tedesco managed to redeem himself with his second try of the night soon after, but it wasn’t enough as the Raiders recorded a famous win to keep their premiership hopes alive. The knockout final ended the Roosters’ campaign, in what could be seen as revenge for the Canberra side’s controversial grand final loss last year. Now, the only thing standing
between the Raiders and another grand final appearance is the Melbourne Storm, as the two sides face off this Friday night, 16 October. Recent recruit Corey Harawira-Naera, who made his debut with the Canberra side during Round 12, said the team needed another quick start if they were going to get up against the Storm. “We’re going to have to start the same as we did and if not, as close as we can because we know they’re going to be fresh and ready to go,” he said. “We’ve just got to stay hungry. I think that’s what showed on the weekend, that we wanted it more and it showed on the scoreboard and the theme will be the same this week, to want it more … I’m pretty keen, I’m buzzing.” The Melbourne Storm will come in with the advantage of a week off, after defeating the Parramatta Eels in a qualifying final to put them straight through. The Raiders have their work cut out for them at Suncorp Stadium, as the Storm have won their last 19 matches in the Sunshine State. Kick-off is at 7.50pm.

Canberra United sign two more Canberra United have added two more names to their growing Westfield W-League side, signing Nicki Flannery and Bianca Galic. Flannery will return to the Canberra side where she debuted in 2015 and played 36 appearances, after spending her 2019-20 season with the Newcastle Jets. Galic will make her first ever W-League appearance after an impressive 2020 National Premier Leagues NSW Women’s season representing Sydney University. The competition is still awaiting details of its start date, which usually kicks off in November.
Two Canberra students will head off to the big smoke after being secured as draft picks for the AFLW Giants side last week. Eighteen-year-olds Emily Pease and Tarni Evans will join the Western Sydney team to begin training next month. Evans moved to Canberra from Tathra at 17, playing locally for the Queanbeyan Tigers, and was the Giants’ first draft pick on 6 October. Pease has played out her junior career with the Belconnen Magpies after playing Aussie rules since Year 7. The pair came head to head on the weekend in the local women’s first grade grand final, with a shock win by the Magpies ending an undefeated season from the Tigers.
A message to the residents of Belconnen Dear Belconnen Residents During the term of this Labor Government, my colleagues and I have watched it become out of touch with the priorities of its base with growing despondency and frustration. This election presents an opportunity for the electorate to take control and set the priorities of our local government. In the event that members of The Belco Party team (myself, Alan Tutt, Angela Lount, Chic Henry and Vijay Dubey) are elected to represent the people of Belconnen, our conditions to support a new Government are: • Suspension of the multi-billion dollar light rail extension scheme with a redirection of Government expenditure to programs that benefit all households in Canberra.
• Agreement to allow elected members a conscious and/or free vote on matters of importance.
• A requirement to introduce new integrity measures within 100 days of the swearing in of the Assembly to ensure and improve good governance in the ACT.
• Government guarantees an ‘open door’ policy enabling access to the Chief Minister and the executive for all elected representatives and community groups.
• A requirement to initiate policies and programs to reduce homelessness in the ACT. Thank you to those that have already supported and voted for us.

cwm advertising feature YOUR HAPPY FEET: HAPPY BY NAME AND BY NATURE You might not expect podiatrists to be cheerful about their work, given all the feet, but Charlie Reynolds and Ben Haggett certainly are. “It’s enjoyable,” says Ben. “You can have a patient limp in with a lot of pain and after 20 minutes, they walk out with that pain substantially reduced.” “It can be a simple fix, or it can take six months to learn what’s going on and create an orthotic that’s brilliant so they can walk properly,” Charlie adds. The duo met while studying in Newcastle, becoming firm friends as well as colleagues. Over the years they have handled some complicated cases: “A regular patient came in for general nail care,” says Charlie. “I could see one leg was slightly swollen ... so I did some vascular testing. We established that she had poor circulation, so I walked down the corridor to the Ochre Medical Centre, got her an immediate appointment and it turned out she had a DVT leg clot that needed acute care from the doctor and then in hospital. That’s the benefit of us being in an integrated health hub.” Your Happy Feet, Ochre Health’s Kippax Health Hub, 76-80 Hardwick Crescent, Holt. T: 6133 9654

A trip to Mexico We’re continuing our trip around the world this week, and food writer Libby Kimber brings you this recipe from Rosa Cienfuegos’ Comida Mexicana.
Empanadas de atun (tuna empanadas) Makes 20
Heat the oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Throw in the onion and garlic and cook for 3 minutes.
2 Tbsp vegetable oil
Add the tuna and stir for 1 minute. Add the salsa de chipotle and continue to cook, stirring frequently, for 5 minutes or until heated through. Stir through the oregano, then remove the pan from the heat, cover and set aside for 1 hour.
1 white onion, diced 1 tsp minced garlic 500g tinned tuna, drained
Store the salsa in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Guacamole Makes 500g 5 ripe avocados (the bigger the better) 15g table salt 3 green chillies, such as jalapeno, serrano or cayenne, finely chopped 100g coriander leaves, finely chopped 3 limes, juiced 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil
Pinch dried oregano
Preheat the oven to 200°C. Line a large baking tray with baking paper.
5 sheets frozen puff pastry, just thawed
Drain the tuna mixture to remove the excess liquid (we need it to be as dry as possible).
2 free-range eggs, lightly beaten
Cut each pastry sheet into four 12cm circles, then divide the tuna mixture evenly among the pastry circles.
Gently mash the avocado in a bowl and stir through the remaining ingredients. Your guacamole is ready!
Guacamole, to serve
Fold the pastry in half over the filling, brushing the edges with the beaten egg to help them stick. Use a fork to crimp and secure the pastry edges, then brush the tops with beaten egg.
350ml salsa de chipotle
Recipe extracted from Comida Mexicana by Rosa Cienfuegos, published by Smith Street Books, RRP $45.
Heat the oil in a frying pan over medium heat, add the salsa and cook, stirring, for 5 minutes. Transfer the salsa to a bowl and set aside to cool.
Transfer the empanadas to the prepared baking tray and bake in the oven for 15–20 minutes, until golden and crisp.
Guacamole is best eaten on the day it is made, as the avocado will start to discolour once peeled, but if you do have leftovers it will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for 1–2 days.

That’s arts and entertainment 2021 ‘Folky’ called off On Monday 12 October, it was announced that the National Folk Festival Board had made the “very challenging and important decision” to cancel the 2021 National Folk Festival after “significant research and planning”. “We understand the devastating effect this will have on our participants and performers, but our community and their safety is our highest priority,” a statement read. “Continuing restrictions around large gatherings in a multiple day festival environment and the unpredictable nature of events mean we have reached a point at which a decision must be made.” Despite cancelling the main event, organisers said they will
“continue to explore alternate events and activities for 2021”. “We sincerely thank our generous community for their ongoing support, particularly our patrons, volunteers, partners and friends who have given so much to the Festival throughout our history,” they said. “We also thank the Festival team for their commitment and resilience since our cancellation in March (2020) and in working hard to ensure the future viability of the Festival. “The spirit of folk lives on and we look forward with hope to bringing the music to you in new ways over the next year, and to the Festival’s return in 2022.”

Now showing The Last Black Man in San Francisco (M) In San Francisco, Jimmie Fails and his best friend Montgomery Allen (Jonathan Majors) watch a local protester rallying against yet another construction in their city. The two share a skateboard as they ride to a beautiful old Victorian house in the gentrified Fillmore district, where Fails starts to take care of the garden, which (once again) infuriates the current owners. Writer, producer and director, Joe Talbot, grew up with lead, Fails, in San Francisco, where, as teenagers, the duo first came up with the idea of making the movie. Talbot ‘cold-emailed’ director Barry Jenkins for advice for his feature film debut, with the result being an artful work akin to Jenkins’ Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk: beautifully
composed and lit shots that linger against a sumptuous score. Disenfranchised and displaced, Fails is called to his old family home and is dedicated to its upkeep, regardless of who’s inhabiting it. Believing that his grandfather built the house in the 1940s, Fails does not hesitate to move in once the opportunity presents itself. African American comedian Tiffany Haddish explains in documentary Hello, Privilege. It’s Me, Chelsea, that it is a privilege white Americans know where their roots lie. Like Jack Black and Mos Def in Be Kind, Rewind, Fails fights tooth and nail to lay claim to his family’s legacy to lay roots of his own, and therefore guarantee his future in the city he loves. Verdict: A beautiful, well-intentioned movie, whose earnestness sometimes borders on comedy. A very strong debut, however. 3 stars. - Luke McWilliams

Frocktober: dressing up for a good cause For Victoria-Rose Paris, women’s health is an issue worth talking about, and she’s harnessing her inner (and outer) style queen for a good cause this month. Victoria-Rose waited six years for a diagnosis of endometriosis after years of debilitating symptoms and is passionate about women’s health and advocating for the health system to take women’s concerns seriously. “I’d have one doctor and they’d be like, ‘oh, yeah, something’s really wrong’. And then they change shifts, and the next one would just send me home [from hospital],” she said. Victoria-Rose is participating in Frocktober to shine a light on ovarian cancer and women’s health, after her battle for a diagnosis. “It just made me really dissatisfied and angry with the
health system, that something can actually be really wrong, and I had so many people telling me I was a hypochondriac and that I was overreacting. And that made me really mentally unwell, because it makes you doubt yourself.” Frocktober is an annual fundraiser for the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF) that aims to shine a light on ovarian cancer and raise awareness for the Foundation’s research work. Frocktober sees participants ‘frock up’ for days, weeks, or the whole month during October. Around 1,800 Australian women are diagnosed with the disease every year, while only 29% of women diagnosed at a late stage will survive for more than five years. Symptoms can often be mistaken for other women’s health issues and there is no early detection test
– a pap smear does not detect the disease – which means the majority of cases of ovarian cancer are detected at an advanced stage. Victoria-Rose said there’s certainly a lack of awareness about ovarian cancer out there, coupled with the dismissal of women’s symptoms. I’d hate for people to think there’s something wrong … and just not be taken seriously,” she said. “I was extremely pushy, and it still took me six years to be diagnosed [with endometriosis].” Victoria-Rose is planning a fundraiser for Saturday 17 October 2pm in Weston Park, where Canberrans are invited to frock up together and raise some money and awareness for the cause. Visit frocktober.org.au to donate. - Libby Kimber

“It’s important that when old medication is discontinued and new medication is started that the carers and the patients know why that’s happened.” The ROMS program’s success has hinged on the multidisciplinary approach from the team, which Mr Bell says is “far more effective” than working separately. “It’s a great system,” he says. “The patients understand a team approach is far more effective, and whether it’s the ROMS team or the patient or it’s the carers, we’re all aiming for the same thing. “It’s a great thing for practices.”

Hill workout This session will test you but will give you awesome results!
Head for the hills Team, this week I am going to give you a great workout to do: hill sprints. I actually love hill sprints, but never do them as often as I would like. A hill sprint session will work on your power and strength; the steeper the gradient of the hill, the more power you’ll need to push up it.
Hill sprints: the need to know Stand tall: do not lean forward over your knees as you run up the hill – this can cause you to lose your power. Standing tall gives you much
better power to make it up the hill, stand up through your running action and lift your chest. Arm swing is important when
• 15 mins warm up Jogging/running and leg stretches • 10 x hill starts Walk for 10 secs from the bottom of the hill, sprint for 10 secs, then walk back to the start point. • 10 x cadence runs Mark out 50 metres on a flat area and walk into a running action; that is your natural cadence. Focus on good form and speed. • 10 x hill hops (each leg) Find a small hill/incline and hop
up on your right leg for 10 hops. Walk back down and do 10 on your left leg. • 10m frog leaps With your feet shoulder-width apart, squat down and leap forward going uphill over 10 metres. • 10 x tempo hill runs Choose your hill and mark out 25-50 metres. Start from a flat run into the hill and keep your same speed and tempo over the distance. Jog down the hill to help with your stride length. • Warm down jog

home Dedicate an area for your quiet moment of tea drinking. Just a corner or nook will do, preferably somewhere with natural light. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
Roam the high teas WITH HOME EDITOR, CASSANDRA POWER
How do you like your cuppa? The answer is different across world cultures. In Chinese tradition, formal tea ceremonies are used to show respect to older generations, apologise for wrongdoing, show gratitude or to celebrate weddings and rituals. In British culture and society, it’s common to sip tea while eating sandwiches, crumpets, scones, cake and biscuits. Some believe the tradition was started by a friend of Queen Victoria. But British tea traditions are not entirely historical with trendy tea houses continuing to pop up around modern London. Known as the “way of tea”, Japanese tea ceremonies embody the principles of Zen Buddhism. Traditionally tranquil, one of the main purposes of the Japanese tea ceremony is for guests to enjoy
the hospitality of the host in an atmosphere distinct from the fast pace of everyday life. Whichever way you take your tea, try these tips to find your perfect cup.
Create a comfortable tea nook Dedicate an area for your quiet moment of tea drinking. Just a corner or nook will do, preferably somewhere with natural light. Deck it out with a bean bag or accent chair, wall art, music (to drown everything else out) and depending on your desired level of Zen, candles, water features and lava lamps are good options. The décor of your new cosy nook should match your house and personal style, but some suitable styles include minimal Scandi with calming timber, fresh, understated, modern chic or the classic floral. Having the perfect place to sit
and drink a cup of tea is in line with the Danish concept of hygge – cosy contentment comes from comfort and quality time spent with loved ones.
Build your own tea bar Because kitchens can get cluttered, a woven basket or bowl to hold your tea varieties creates a healthconscious haven and a visual reminder to drink up. Depending on the type, the health benefits of tea can include improved digestion, stress-relieving properties, and energy boosts. You will need a beautiful tea set. If teatime is just for you, T2 has sets for one. If you’re tea timing with your kids, Kmart has a ceramic set with a DIY painting kit full of cuteness. But if you get a full set you can …
Host your own tea party How long has it been since you’ve
had a tea party? Because the game has changed. Many adults are looking for more social outlets without an alcoholic focus which makes tea parties perfect. As restrictions lift, we can get together with friends for tea and plates of sandwiches and cakes – whilst social distancing. But for distant relatives or those with vulnerable health classifications, virtual tea parties are definitely a thing.
Host a charity fundraiser There are some great charities out there to raise funds for. Project Didi Australia, Something for Slavery and the Cancer Council’s World’s Biggest Morning Tea are just a few worthy causes that run tea party fundraisers to help you put some meaning in your fun.

Sheer elegance in Gleneagles Kambah 83 Ivo Whitton Circuit One Agency Sandy Morris principal, Sandy Morris, says this is one of the “finest properties Gleneagles Estate has ever had on offer” – and it’s not hard to see why. Sitting on over 1,000sqm, the stylish 83 Ivo Whitton Circuit backs on to the golf course and exudes elegance both inside and out. Morris says the unique, Georgian-style home is “perfectly positioned backing the 7th fairway in picturesque Gleneagles Estate, with the Murrumbidgee Golf Course
and endless walking trails at your doorstep”. “The position on the block maximises the northerly sun through the living areas,” she says. The luxury home boasts five bedrooms upstairs, including an oversized main bedroom with walk-in robe and ensuite, and a range of living spaces including a rumpus room, separate dining room and formal lounge room with fireplace, all on the lower level. The four remaining bedrooms
boast built-in robes and are serviced by a large main bathroom with spa bath and separate toilet. The kitchen – which includes a butler’s pantry – and open plan family and meals area leads out to the sparkling in-ground pool and the landscaped gardens, with an alfresco entertaining area, fishpond, fountains and, of course, access to the golf course. The pool is solar-heated and sits adjacent to a pool house and change-room. The home also boasts ducted reverse-cycle heating and air conditioning, triple garage with workshop space and a “commercialsize” laundry. “The wonderfully versatile
floorplan will afford itself to a variety of living situations and will suit multigenerational families, those looking to work from home and families that just need space,” Morris says.

Weekly market wrap Window closing to sell in 2020
WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST
Auction results are showing the increased listing volume during the last several weeks has failed to impact on buyer demand. According to Domain, on 10 October there were 58 confirmed auction results of which 47 had sold, achieving a gross sales value of $38,971,100. Even more impressive, the preliminary auction clearance rate was 81%. This is up from what is widely regarded as a very acceptable clearance rate of 70% this time last year. Of these sales, two auction campaigns were run by a colleague in my office which exceeded the vendors’ reserves collectively by over $150,000. Initially, these reserves appeared on the ambitious side, however, insatiable buyer demand for well-located properties achieved far greater than expected sales results. Buyers bidding must seriously fear the alternative of not securing their new home at the fall of the hammer. Vendors seeking to have their property sold prior to
Christmas are facing a rapidly closing window of opportunity. For a vendor starting the process to have their property ready for the market, assuming they began on 15 October, a contract realistically would not be ready to allow their property to be advertised for sale prior to November. To have the opportunity to sell in 2020, vendors need to act now. Individually, agents all have their own perspective on if there is any value having properties for sale during the DecemberJanuary holiday season. This generally has more to do with the vendor and their agent’s plans, rather than the state of the market. I anticipate likely reduced interstate or overseas travel opportunities won’t cause the typical seasonal exodus from Canberra
The Parks gets green light
Record home loan commitments: ABS
Doma’s ‘The Parks Residences’ in Red Hill has received DA approval, with construction work expected to begin on the development early next year. The Parks Residences sit on 5.2 hectares behind Red Hill Shops and will see 136 apartments built across six buildings in a village-like precinct. Inspired by townhouses in Paris and London, Doma’s senior development manager David Jameson said The Parks is appealing to buyers who may have originally been priced out of the Red Hill market. “There is research suggesting the 20-minute neighbourhood, where we have all the conveniences we need close to home, is the way people want to live and is the new gold standard for urban planning,” he said. Construction is expected to be completed in mid-2022.
ABS figures show home loan commitments nationally rose sharply to record levels in August, up 12.6% seasonally adjusted. “The value of owner occupier home loan commitments was $16.3 billion in August, the highest value in the history of the series,” said ABS head of finance and wealth, Amanda Seneviratne. She said borrower behaviour and lender processing times have been strongly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. “Lenders are reporting to us that current processing times mean that August commitments reflect customer demand in

this year. Should this eventuate, those selling properties may find themselves in a position where market conditions are effectively ‘business as usual’. Having worked many holiday seasons, it never ceases to amaze me how many people are actively looking to buy properties during that time of year. On reflection, I suspect this was due to being responsive to enquiry combined with prospective purchasers expecting to demonstrate their capacity to perform as a qualified buyer – almost identical to vendor and agent expectations during restrictions imposed by the ACT Government from late March in response to COVID-19.
June and early July, prior to Victoria imposing stage 3 and stage 4 restrictions.” The number of owner occupier first home buyer loan commitments rose 17.7% to reach the highest level since October 2009, while new loan commitments to owner occupiers for construction of new dwellings rose 19.2% in August. “New loan commitments for owner occupier housing rose in all states and territories, except the Northern Territory. The largest increases in the value of new loan commitments were in Victoria, Queensland and NSW.”

On rare occasions we strike a property such as Mundarrangong that has one of the most convenient locations on the Southern Monaro, but rarely do they come with the added bonus of approximately 2 kilometres of river frontage! Situated on the town limits of Bombala, Mundarrangong neighbours the local golf
club and has ample frontage to council maintained roads which would allow for future subdivision. Bombala is an ideal location situated halfway between Melbourne and Sydney, 2 ½ hours from Canberra, 1 hour to the Sapphire Coast (Pambula, Merimbula, Eden) and 1 ½ hours to the Snowy Mountains
and the NSW ski fields. Mundarrangong is 246.86ha/610ac of undulating granite country that is bisected by the beautiful Bombala River, it is currently under a substantial pasture improvement program and contains substantial stands of gumtrees, perfect for stock shelter and shade.

My favourite things
FIELDWORK I’ve spent the last two summers in Antarctica studying an area known as the Vestfold Hills, near Australia’s Davis Station. It’s a beautiful place but conditions can change quickly so you learn to be adaptable and decisive.
STAYING ACTIVE
Photo Kerrie Brewer
Antarctic fieldwork is physically intensive but most of the year I’m office based. I love the walking trails around Canberra and what an active city we are. You can often find me walking up Mt Ainslie, wandering along Molonglo Gorge, or bouldering at Bloc Haus.
COOKING I find cooking a great way to unwind and right now it’s about the closest I can get to international travel. Some of my favourite cookbook authors include the Monday Morning Cooking Club, Hetty McKinnon, Kylie Kwong, and Benjamin Cooper.
Dr Steph McLennan Antarctic geoscientist
Dr Steph McLennan is an Antarctic geoscientist at Geoscience Australia. Her research focuses on the impacts of people on fragile ice-free landscapes in Antarctica. By using field observations, rock samples, drones, and satellite imagery, she pieces together the geological history of previously icecovered landscapes to understand how they formed and predict how the environment will react to impacts like walking tracks, infrastructure development, and climate change. She was awarded a PhD in environmental geoscience from the University of Adelaide and moved to Canberra in 2015. In 2019, she was named as one of 60 Superstars of STEM, a national program aimed at challenging gender stereotypes in science, technology, engineering, and maths by giving women in STEM greater visibility. - Danielle Meddemmen
READING My mum is a teacher-librarian so I grew up in libraries and around books. Some of my favourite reads this year include Terra Nullius by Claire G. Coleman, The Spy and the Traitor by Ben Macintyre, and Origins by Lewis Dartnell.
ROTARACT I’ve been involved with the Rotaract Club of Canberra now for a few years and it’s been a fantastic way to meet new people and give back. We fundraise and run events to support the local Canberra community and international initiatives and have a great time along the way.
