This week... From the editor Don’t judge me but … despite my best intentions to “Vote safe. Vote early” – as the vast majority of the ACT electorate did – I waited until official election day, Saturday 17 October. It’s less due to procrastination and more to do with tradition. Since my younger child turned 18, almost eight years ago, the two of us have developed a custom of going to our local polling place together to vote on election day, local or federal. Usually, we’d meet at home, head to the local school, join the queue of voters, collect every ‘how to vote’ card thrust at us, separately cast our votes, then complete the ritual with a democracy sausage purchase and possibly buy some vegie seedlings from the P&C’s plant stall. This year, #BecauseCovid, there were no queues, no how to vote card sharps in sight, no democracy sausages or seedlings. It made for a remarkably quick exercise of our democratic right and responsibility. Instead, to tick the final box, we headed to the food vans in Phillip for a couple of breakfast burgers and a coffee. While it wasn’t a P&C fundraiser, with the year our local hospitality industry has experienced, we were happy to give them our support on this very strange election day in this very strange year. I’m grateful for food vans and living in Canberra, in a healthy democracy.

news

While it’s been confirmed ACT Labor have won the 2020 ACT election, assuming they again form government with the ACT Greens, the tenth ACT Legislative Assembly will look significantly different to the ninth. At least 10 seats will go to ACT Labor, eight to the Canberra Liberals and five to the ACT Greens, with single seats in Ginninderra and Brindabella yet to be called as at 20 October. This result would dramatically reshuffle the Legislative Assembly, as the previous parliament housed 12 Labor MLAs, 11 Liberals and two Greens. However, with two seats in the balance, it’s important to remember the ACT’s Hare-Clark voting system means preference flows can alter the result. The deadline for postal votes to be received by Elections ACT is 5pm Friday 23 October. A formal declaration of results is therefore not expected until at least 28 October.

How Canberra voted ACT Labor will emerge from the 2020 election largely unscathed, appearing to only lose Deepak-Raj Gupta’s Yerrabi seat to the ACT Greens. Labor recorded a 0.4% swing away from their 2016 result. Things didn’t pan out the way the Canberra Liberals would have hoped on Saturday. At this stage they look like dropping three seats, having received a negative 3.1% swing. “The results are very disappointing … We’ve got to make sure we do everything we can to learn from this,” Canberra Liberals leader Alistair Coe said. Looking like the big winners of this election, the ACT Greens will claim at least three seats on the back 12

canberraweekly.com.au

of a 3.3% swing towards them. There was an 8.3% swing away from independents compared to 2016, with a number who polled strongly last time either forming their own party, joining an existing one, or opting against having another tilt. The only electorate where an independent polled strongly was Murrumbidgee, where former Woden Valley Community Council president Fiona Carrick was the fourth most popular on first preference votes, but appears unlikely to pick up a seat due to flow of preferences.

ACT Election 2020 by electorate Yerrabi The Canberra Liberals received a strong 4.7% swing their way in the Gungahlin-based electorate on the back of Coe being local and the fact 2016’s election was fought on the regionally popular Light Rail. Despite that, they were unable to wrangle any additional seats; the only change to their line-up sees MLA James Milligan ousted by fellow Liberal Leanne Castley. With light rail now up and running, Labor copped a 9.5% swing against them which will cost Mr Gupta his seat, most likely to the ACT Greens’ Andrew Braddock. Ginninderra In Ginninderra, retiring Canberra Liberals MLA Vicki Dunne’s seat appears set to be snapped up by the Greens’ Jo Clay, however Labor

The tenth ACT Legislative Assembly will take on a tinge of green, with two seats still in the balance; at least 10 will go to ACT Labor, eight to the Canberra Liberals and five to the ACT Greens.

Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay is in a fight for his spot against Liberal Peter Cain. The Canberra Liberals have been hurt in Ginninderra by a 5.6% swing against them, with a significant portion of their votes going to the right-leaning Belco Party. The former Canberra Liberals leader Bill Stefaniak polled 9.4% of Ginninderra’s total vote, but his Belco Party won’t pick up a seat due to Stefaniak and running mate Chic Henry splitting the party’s vote, and a lack of preferences flowing their way. Kurrajong The ACT’s most left-leaning electorate – affectionately known as Canberra’s ‘lentil belt’ – will have two Greens representatives, two Labor including Chief Minister Andrew Barr and just one Liberal, with former Canberra Liberals MLA Candice Burch likely to drop her seat to ACT Greens candidate Rebecca Vassarotti. This comes on the back of a 4.7% swing to the ACT Greens in the electorate described by their leader Shane Rattenbury as “Green heartland”. Murrumbidgee The Canberra Liberals recorded a 7.6% swing against them in this Woden-based electorate. This change in vote can be attributed to Murrumbidgee’s Jeremy Hanson no longer leading the Liberals, Fiona Carrick’s strong turnout, and that voters might have felt a bit more loved by the LaborGreens government given their

pledge to run light rail into Woden and build a new CIT campus there. The balance of seats will remain the same between the parties, but ACT Labor’s Bec Cody will be usurped by party running mate Marisa Paterson, while retiring Greens MLA Caroline Le Couteur will be replaced by Emma Davidson. Brindabella The home of Liberals Senator for the ACT Zed Seselja, Brindabella has long been considered a conservative stronghold, especially on the back of it delivering the Canberra Liberals three seats in 2016. This time however, Labor has enjoyed a 7.3% swing toward them, with the Canberra Liberals dropping off 3.5% which will probably cost them the third seat. The Liberals Mark Parton and Nicole Lawder retain their seats as do Labor’s Mick Gentlemen and Joy Burch. “I think we’ve busted the mythology that Tuggeranong and southern Canberra is somehow a Liberal party stronghold,” said ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr on Sunday. It appears the fifth seat, previously held by Canberra Liberals’ Andrew Wall, will go to either ACT Labor’s Taimus WernerGibbings or ACT Greens’ Johnathan Davis, although Mr Coe insisted it’s still “very much a three-horse race”. news Leo Sayer ‘feels like giving’ for Can Give Day The Canberra Hospital Foundation (CHF) have brought Grammyaward winning disco sensation Leo Sayer on board as an ambassador to launch their new fundraising venture Can Give Day on 26 November. Mr Sayer, who has resided in the nearby NSW Southern Highlands for some time now, will perform at an online fundraising gig from the National Museum of Australia, and said he’s thrilled to be involved. “It will be a great show, and one that I hope will inspire Canberrans to give,” he said. Mr Sayer said getting involved with CHF was personally significant to him due to a strong family connection - his mother was a nurse during World War II, his dad was a hospital engineer and his sister was a deputy matron.

“I’d known about hospitals and what they do for years … this feels like a bit of payback for the time that hospitals were good to me and my family,” he said. “If we can make people more aware of what healthcare workers do and how they serve the community, we can make it also a place of less fear.” CHF chair Deborah Rolfe AM told Canberra Weekly she believes Canberrans will be “very keen” to get involved supporting their health services, “particularly given the nurses and doctors have been frontline during these last very difficult months”. “I can’t help but be proud of the tireless work healthcare workers do … but frequently it’s a thankless task so it’s important they’re well supported.”

The goal of Can Give Day is to raise $400,000 to help purchase state-of-the-art treatment technology and equipment, help fund clinical trials, research therapeutic treatments, art projects and transformations of visiting areas and lounges within the hospital, along with a host of other services. CHF raises funds for the health and support services delivered in all public hospitals and health centres in Canberra. Mr Sayer said the event itself will be a 24-hour ‘festival of giving’, in the style of telethons of days gone by, featuring himself and a number of other performers. “There will be a lot of little events going on, a lot of groups involved, it’s going to be exciting,

news Knowing the signs of gambling harm A 2019 study reported 44,000 Canberrans had experienced harm from their own or someone else’s gambling, while recent reports suggest gambling in different forms may have increased during COVID-19. That is why Gambling Harm Awareness Week 2020, 19-25 October, is encouraging Canberrans to know the signs of the harm on themselves, their mates or loved ones. ACT Gambling and Racing Commission Chair, Paul Baxter, said gambling needed to be treated as a public health issue. “It’s not just the person with the addiction; it’s an impact that extends way beyond that person to family, friends, work colleagues,” he said. “We are recognising we aren’t saying people just shouldn’t gamble. Realistically, 60% of the people in Canberra have a flutter somewhere in

gambling, whether it be in Melbourne Cup or on gaming machines. “We are focusing on recognising what is happening amongst your friends, and the signs of gambling harm.” Canberrans are urged to watch for signs of playing after the funds stop, making excuses or hiding how much you play, chasing losses and having less money than you otherwise would. Mr Baxter said while a COVID-19 lockdown saw the inability to play electronic gaming machines in the ACT, there was an increase in other types of gambling. “There is evidence to suggest there has been an increase in online gaming, some legal and some illegal, although some people may not recognise those which aren’t legal,” he said. “Since then, the government has

reopened access and there is no doubt people have moved back into using those devices very quickly. “It will be interesting to see those statistics in months to come.” Mr Baxter said he also expected some new discussion around gambling and restrictions following the 2020 ACT Election. “Is there likely to be changes around gambling and policy? There is a new government and probably a new discussion on this issue,” he said. “There may be an impact upon gambling arrangements in the ACT, and our task will then be to implement that policy.” If you or someone you know needs support, visit act.gov.au/ gamblingharm or call the Gambling Helpline on 1800 858 858. news The Fathering Project to launch in Canberra National charity The Fathering Project is in the process of recruiting volunteers as they prepare to roll out their services in the ACT early next year. The Fathering Project works by establishing dads’ groups in school communities and delivering resources, programs and events specific to the engagement style and needs of dads and father-figures. Their Canberra roll-out will begin via South Tuggeranong’s Charles Conder Primary School, with Taylor’s Margaret Hendry School in Gungahlin also looking to join. “We’ll have the most northerly and southerly schools in the ACT – all we want to do is fill in between now,” said Fathering Project training and partnerships manager, David Forrest. Prior to their February 2021 ACT start date, Mr Forrest has begun training local volunteers through online courses, who will go on to facilitate the dads’ groups. To date, they have several volunteers and hope to have 10 trained up by the time they launch next year so they’re prepared to bring additional schools online.

Mr Forrest said he’s commonly asked why the charity focuses solely on fathers. “We clearly see families as important, but men traditionally don’t get involved in the school community or caring role of the children because it’s often not socially acceptable or not the done thing,” he said. “Mums are critical, fathers are important, but the research says there’s often an invisible role of the caring father, it’s invisible … The role of the father is often underrated.” The Fathering Project was founded in 2013 by WA academic, Dr Bruce Robinson. As a lung specialist, Dr Robinson would sit with men dying and ask if they had any regrets and found that nine times out of 10, they would say they wish they had spent more time with their kids. Inspired by that, Dr Robinson started the Fathering Project in WA, initially establishing dads’ groups in school communities. From that point, the project has expanded nationally to now involve more than 300 schools in all states, with Charles Conder Primary to be their first school in an Australian territory.

Charles Conder Primary principal Jason Walmsley said the school decided to take part to foster and promote fathers and father-figures engaging with their children’s learning. “It’s terrific to do something like this and have that research-driven project, it’s great and I’m hoping this sort of an advertisement can engage other schools … that broadens the network for us as well.” If you’re interested in volunteering with The Fathering Project in the ACT, head to thefatheringproject.org - Denholm Samaras

news Lawson’s best kept coffee secret Most people dream of a short commute to work, but Lawson man Sovithyea ‘SV’ Sar has the shortest commute of all – from his house to the café he runs from his front yard. SV started his eponymous business, SV Coffee & Bakery, six months ago during the height of COVID-19 restrictions, originally from inside his house. He’s since seen a groundswell of support for the venture, which has now moved to the front yard to accommodate the locals and regulars. It’s almost invisible from the road if not for the sign advertising his newest drink: an ice coconut latte. At first, SV says people didn’t know the café was there, “because it’s a house”. “I had a scooter, it was two degrees, and I letterbox dropped all the houses in Lawson,” he says.

“And then people started coming … two guys came to my place and knocked on the door and said ‘is there a coffee shop here?’ … and those were my first two customers.” SV says after that first day, he would make between two and 10 coffees a day. “Sometimes I’d make 20 … I’d say ‘ah, so busy today, I made 20 coffees!’” SV now dishes up 150 to 200 coffees a day – made from Lonsdale Roasters beans – and house-made treats (literally made in his house), all available for takeaway. An experienced barista, SV took his blend of beans to the National Barista Championships last year and finished third in his category. It’s because of his passion for coffee and community that SV Coffee & Bakery was born. “This place, I’m tyring to bring

Batocara mitchelli with 30% of the votes, an extinct group of marine arthropods similar to scorpions and crabs, that became extinct about 250 million years ago. Chair of the ACT Fossil Emblem organising committee, Dr Rachel Przeslawski, said the fossil was one of the most iconic in the region. “The fossil voted by the public is usually only found in small fragments and not the whole specimen, but when they were drilling into the foundations of the new Treasury Building, they found a full specimen,” she said. The ACT is the fourth Australian jurisdiction to boast its very own fossil anthem, joining NSW, SA and WA. The poll ran from 7 September to 13 October. Coming in a close second with

There is not legislation that prohibits the use so anyone can use it for their event,” she said. “It’s a public emblem, it’s not something we want locked up. After leaving the Monaro Highway and approaching Canberra I am appalled and embarrassed for the nation’s capital; the sides of the main road is littered with garbage, weeds, even household items such as cushions, bottles, etc. If I was a visitor to Canberra, I would have a negative impression of the capital; the grass is long with trees that need cutting back and weeds everywhere. Surely with unemployment high, there are people out there who want to work and could do the job that obviously the council is not doing. It’s a disgrace. - P. Ingram, Jindabyne NSW

news Calls for one-stop recycling centre for Canberra The founder of grassroots organisation Lids4Kids is calling for a permanent home for the facility in the ACT – a one-stop recycling drop-off centre for Canberrans. Lids4Kids currently operates out of founder Tim Miller’s garage. He says the organisations needs a home, and the community needs a facility where plastics and other items like batteries or printer cartridges can be dropped off, sorted by volunteers, and then sent on to be recycled or reused by relevant charities or organisations. Tim has started a petition calling on the next ACT Government to help the organisation find a facility, either through the donation of a space or grants that could cover rent of a facility, after unsuccessfully trying to secure a space for Lids4Kids in empty commercial shopfronts: “we just haven’t been able to get a benevolent

building owner [to donate the space]”. “Because we host weekly workshops with different community groups with Scouts and retirement villages and special needs families, we want to have a location where people can come and help us sort the lids, but also, more importantly, learn about recycling and what is recyclable, what isn’t,” he said. Lids4Kids runs workshops and works with groups such as schools and community groups as well as stroke survivors and people with dementia, autism and ADHD to sort the donated lids. Many participants have reported the benefits of participating in a “simple but meaningful” process to keep plastic from landfill. Tim started Lids4Kids in May 2019 to collect plastic tops which were sent to Envision Hands to recycle them into mobility aids for children. Since

then, Lids4Kids has spread across the country and Envision has been provided with millions of lids. The lids are now sent to PlasLink ACT, an initiative from the ANU where engineering students work to turn plastic waste into new products, and Tim has plans to use recycled lids as part of science programs in schools and as public art projects. - Libby Kimber

sport Storm ends Raiders’ premiership dream The Canberra Raiders’ premiership dream ended with an emphatic 30-10 loss to the Melbourne Storm at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium on Friday night, 16 October. The Raiders were never in the contest as the Storm scored three tries in the opening 10 minutes on their way to booking a spot in their fourth Grand Final in five years. Perhaps they were still feeling the effects from last week’s tough game against the Roosters, or perhaps they were lethargic from have just jumped off the plane without a pre-match hotel stay due to Queensland’s border restrictions. Whatever it was, the Raiders simply had no answer for the ruthless Storm side. Nick Cotric managed to get the Raiders on the board in the 29th

minute to give them a glimmer of hope but it was a long way back from 24-6 down at half time. The Raiders started the second half by driving Dale Finucane 15 metres back into the in-goal area and it looked like there may be some life in the Green Machine. However, they came up with a simple error which seemed to take the wind out of their sails. The Storm are such a professional outfit and despite the Raiders having a few opportunities to close the gap, they kept coming up with big defensive plays and had the game well and truly wrapped up with 20 minutes to go. It was John Bateman’s last game in the NRL as he heads back to England to play for Wigan. Corey Harawira-Naera will slot straight in for Bateman in the second row in

The disappointment was clear on the face of Ricky Stuart as he spoke briefly to the media, saying he was proud of where the team got to, but that the opening 25 minutes wasn’t the start the team needed. Cavalry pitches naming rights to Lifeline

Canberra United filling out squad Canberra United have added young defenders Jessika Nash and Clare Hunt to their Westfield W-League squad, as the team continues to fill out ahead of the start of season. Hunt is returning to the Canberra side after two seasons in 2016/17 and 2017/18. Nash will be making her debut in the W-League with the Canberra side, after captaining the Junior Matildas during 2019. Head coach Vicki Linton is set to ramp up the naming of her side, after Football Federation Australia announced the season would kick off from 27 December.

The Lifeline Canberra logo will be seen on the Canberra Cavalry jersey this season, as the local Australian Baseball League (ABL) franchise hands over its naming rights for a good cause. The logo will not only be seen on the team’s jersey, but also around MIT Ballpark in Narrabundah. Both Lifeline Canberra and the Canberra Cavalry hope the collaboration will continue to raise awareness around mental health in what has been a tough year. The ABL season is scheduled to start in December, with the Cavalry set to join Perth, Sydney and Melbourne in Western Australia for the Australian conference. The Cavs will go head to head against the Perth Heat on 18 December.

GIVIT donation of the week: FJ Holden ute parts

Wallington Market Day

A year ago, a mature couple nearing retirement lived a completely different life than the reality they face today. Residing on a rural property in one of the worst hit regions in the Black Summer fires, this couple bravely fought to save their home, but in the end lost much more than just their life’s belongings. They were left with only a single item intact, a double canoe, which was stolen by looters only days after the blaze. As avid collectors, the items lost were dear to their hearts, from family heirlooms to rare collectables. The gentleman is a car and motorbike enthusiast, who would spend his free time enjoying swap meets, searching for genuine accessories for his beloved projects. He is currently working to restore his FJ Holden ute. Anyone who has spare parts, even a bench seat, which can contribute to this project will help a fellow collector gain a sense of pride and heal his heart after such a devastating loss. Donations can be delivered or posted to the organisation. To donate, visit givit.org.au/donate-items, search by category “FJ Holden Ute parts” to view requests located in area (please select 100km search range as this request is located in the greater Canberra region). After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off. Woolworths supports Variety In the lead up to Halloween, Woolworths and Variety the Children’s Charity are inviting Canberra customers to support sick and disadvantaged children across the ACT. With the financial impact of COVID-19 continuing to affect charities across Australia, Woolworths customers can purchase a $2 wall token with 100% of funds raised supporting children in need. All funds raised for the Halloween fundraising appeal will assist Variety in their ongoing efforts to support children across ACT and NSW, who are facing challenging times as a result of illness, disadvantage or living with a disability. This year, while shopping for their pumpkins, costumes and decorations for Halloween celebrations at home, Woolies is encouraging customers who are able to support other children and their families in ACT, to make a charity donation or add a Halloween token to their shop. The campaign will run through to 31 October in Woolworths stores across Australia.

Footy finals fever

Makes 8 Olive oil 1 onion, roughly chopped

This week, CW is celebrating all things footy finals. Food writer Libby Kimber brings you the ultimate pitchside snack you can enjoy at home – win or lose – with a vegan twist.

4 garlic cloves, finely chopped

Sausage rolls

5 drops liquid smoke (optional)

Recipe extracted from Vegan Junk Food by Zacchary Bird, published by Smith Street Books, RRP $39.99

2 tsp Dijon mustard

200g chestnut or button mushrooms, roughly chopped 2 beef- or chicken-style stock cubes 1 Tbsp soy sauce 2 tsp vegan Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp thyme or rosemary leaves 250g vegan mince or vegan burger patties, broken up into chunks Pinch of freshly ground black pepper 2 Tbsp finely chopped flat-leaf parsley leaves 2 sheets dairy-free frozen puff pastry, just thawed 2 tsp soy milk 1 tsp sesame seeds (optional) 1 tsp poppy seeds (optional) Tomato ketchup, to serve Preheat the oven to 200°C. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, for 5 minutes. Add the garlic and mushroom and continue to cook until the mushroom has broken down and any liquid has evaporated. Transfer the mushroom mixture to a food processor, along with the stock cubes, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, thyme or rosemary leaves and the liquid smoke (if using) and blitz to combine.

Photography: © Pete Dillon, food styling: © Bridget Wald.

Place the mince in a large bowl and use a fork to mash the mustard, pepper and parsley into the mince. Stir in the mushroom mixture until well combined. Divide the mixture into quarters. Cut the pastry sheets in half and place them in front of you. Evenly spoon the mince mixture along the long edge of each pastry sheet, then fold the pastry sheets over to enclose the filling and use a fork to crimp and seal the edges. Press the sausage rolls down on this crease to seal shut, then cut in half and stuff any filling that’s fallen out back into the open ends. Whisk 4 teaspoons olive oil and the soy milk in a small bowl. Using a pastry brush, brush the mixture over the top of each sausage roll and sprinkle with the sesame seeds and/or poppy seeds (if using). Bake for 25–35 minutes, until golden. Serve with tomato ketchup or your favourite tomato sauce. The sausage rolls will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for 3–4 days or in the freezer for up to 3 months. 34

taste Double cheeseburger with sweet potato wedges Serves 2 400g sweet potatoes

125g cherry tomatoes

50ml olive oil

2 Tbsp red wine vinegar

Salt and pepper

1 Tbsp sugar

1 red capsicum

2 burger buns

2 oregano sprigs

125g haloumi

1 French shallot

60g rocket

Prepare sweet potato: Preheat the oven to 220°C. Line one or two oven trays with baking paper. Scrub and cut the sweet potato into 2.5cm wedges and put on the lined tray/s. Drizzle with 2 teaspoons/1 tablespoon of the olive oil, season with salt and pepper and toss to coat. Roast for 20 minutes or until golden and tender. Prepare relish ingredients: Meanwhile, cut four ‘cheeks’ off each capsicum and set aside. Finely chop the remaining flesh to be used in the relish, discarding the seeds and membrane. Pick the oregano leaves, discarding the stems, and coarsely chop. Finely chop the shallot. Cook relish: Heat 1-2 tablespoons oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook the tomatoes, shallot and chopped capsicum for 3 minutes or until slightly softened. Using the back of a fork, lightly squash the tomatoes. Stir in the oregano, vinegar and sugar and season with salt. Cook for 10–12 minutes until thickened. Remove from the heat and allow to cool and thicken. Cook capsicum: Meanwhile, while the relish is cooking, heat 2 teaspoons/1 tablespoon of the oil in a frying pan over medium–high heat. Cook the capsicum cheeks for 3–4 minutes each side until lightly charred and cooked through. Remove from the pan and keep warm. Warm bread rolls: Meanwhile, cut the burger buns in half. Heat in the oven for 5 minutes or until warmed through and crusty. Cut the haloumi into four or eight slices. (Slice through the block of haloumi across the largest surface area, so the slice can fill the bun as much as possible.) Get ready to serve: Heat the remaining olive oil in the same frying pan over medium–high heat. Cook the haloumi, in batches if necessary, for 1 minute each side or until golden. Divide the rocket among the bun bases, layer with the capsicum and haloumi, then spoon over the relish and top with the bun lids. Serve with the wedges.

Acclaimed comedian and UC alumnus Wil Anderson told Canberra Weekly he has been delighted to see Canberra continue to flourish culturally as he’s returned over the past 25 years. Photo: James Demitri.

Wil Anderson links up with alma mater to celebrate UC’s 30th Acclaimed comedian, TV personality, podcaster and UC alumnus, Wil Anderson, will return to Canberra next month to celebrate UC’s 30th birthday by hosting a live panel event. UC’s Future Bright Facebook Live event will explore what makes Canberra’s future promising with a panel of UC experts and music from Alice Ivy. It will be held early next month online and in front of a sold-out, limited, socially-distanced, live audience at The Street Theatre. Having graduated from UC top of his newspaper journalism class in 1995, Anderson told

Canberra Weekly that since being invited back for the event, he has reflected fondly on his time here. “I certainly enjoyed living there, you reflect on these things very much when you get asked to come back and do something like this,” he said. Upon graduating, Anderson worked briefly for the Australian Financial Review prior to pursuing his career in comedy. Despite the change in career, he said as the years have passed, he’s realised just how formative his time in Canberra was. “When you’re at university you think that what

you’re learning is it,” he said. “When I decided not to be a newspaper journalist, I thought ‘that time that I spent there, those three years, is that a waste?’ … As I’ve got older, I’ve had the capacity to reflect on that. “In the first week of university O-week I went to see Helen and Mikey go and do the Triple J Breakfast show in the UC Bar. “It was the first time I’d ever listened to Triple J and I got to see this live show, we were all drinking at 6am and I just thought ‘this is amazing’ and wouldn’t have known two days into university that I was seeing a job I’d do myself for five years. “I did more years doing Triple J Breakfast than I did working as a newspaper journalist.” Returning to Canberra semi-regularly over the past 25 years to perform his stand-up comedy, Anderson said he’s been delighted to see the city’s culture flourish. “I really always enjoy getting back there,” he said. “As I’ve travelled around the world a bit, particularly in the US, I really started to make a compilation of the best and most interesting cities I ever went to that tended to have a combination of two things – they would have a university class and a political class. “You need the university class to bring in the cool stuff, the great places for the bands to play and the great cafes … The bands and all those things were there when I was there, but I don’t think the café and restaurant scene was. “Each time I’ve visited over the last five to seven years, I’m constantly amazed by the amount of great places there are to eat or get a cup of coffee and how much it’s come alive in that sense.” Given Anderson hasn’t performed for a live audience since March, and even recently begun filming a new season of Gruen in an empty studio, he said he looks forward to the limited live audience he’ll have for Future Bright. “There’s not too many more people in the room for this event then there is for your average ABC Gruen meeting, so it’s not going to be necessarily ‘come on guys you’re back at Carnegie Hall’ but as somebody who, comedy in particular, needs an audience … I’ll take it where I can get it,” he smiled. “I’ll be looking forward to the fact that there are a few people in the room that I can hopefully make laugh every now and then.” The University of Canberra’s Future Bright Facebook Live will take place at The Street Theatre, City West 6 November from 7.30pm; register for the live stream at eventbrite.com.au - Denholm Samaras

There’s nothing quite like drifting above the bucolic landscape of Canowindra in a hot air balloon at sunrise, thanks to Balloon Joy Flights.

Getaway: Central NSW road trip With the countryside verdant and travel to regional NSW considered safe, road tripping through Central NSW ticks plenty of boxes. CW editor Julie Samaras hit the road to Oberon, Cowra and Canowindra on 9-11 October to take in the sights.

Detour Adventures We headed off the beaten track with local tour operator Ian Redpath in his pristine 4WD for a bespoke fossicking tour to a sparkling waterway near Oberon. Armed with a sturdy shovel, sieves and gold panning dishes, Ian led us through the process of gemstone hunting – swirling silt and stones from the riverbed in the hope of separating gems such as sapphires, zircons, industrial diamonds or flecks of gold from the clay. While we didn’t strike it rich, we pocketed some pretty stones and treasured memories. For 363 days of the year, around 15 hectares of these spectacular gardens are open to the public, but during the spring, summer, autumn and winter festivals, the public is also given access to the additional 50 hectares of the expansive Hawkins’ Family Garden. Our visit was perfectly timed to take advantage of this extraordinary bonus (the 2020 spring festival ends 25 October). 530 Mayfield Road, Oberon; mayfieldgarden.com.au Captain Barnacles Ventures Russell (aka Captain Barnacle or the Captain) met us in Cowra on his gleaming red Harley Davidson to take us on a bespoke Motorcycle ‘n Sidecar Tour for two passengers, politely taking turns to ride pillion or sidecar style. After donning the supplied (hygienic) safety gear, we set off to see some of the most popular sights in town – the Cowra Japanese Garden, POW campsite and war cemeteries – before cruising the country roads out to Rosnay Organic Farm. Touring on a head-turning Harley is a fun way to poke around town or take in some wine tasting at nearby vineyards.

This week Jeff Popple reviews an exciting new novel by local author Chris Hammer. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog murdermayhemandlongdogs.com

Trust by Chris Hammer Allen & Unwin, $32.99

Canberra author Chris Hammer drew worldwide praise for his debut novel Scrublands, about murder in a drought ravaged town in the Riverina, and his follow-up mystery, Silver, set on the north coast of New South Wales. Now in Trust he turns his attention to corruption and murder in Sydney. Former journalist and successful true crime writer, Martin Scarsden is enjoying a peaceful time on the beach when a desperate phone call sends him rushing home to find an unconscious man sprawled on the floor and his partner, Mandy Blonde, missing. It soon becomes clear that Mandy has been kidnapped and that the reason for it lies in Sydney and her murky past with an

apparent swindler, who years before stole millions from a bank before disappearing. The discovery of a body causes a rethink of what happened five years ago, and Scarsden and Mandy suddenly find themselves entangled in the search for the missing millions and an explosive newspaper investigation into large scale judicial and political corruption. Trust is a tightly constructed and well-paced crime thriller that smoothly moves to a suitably surprising and bloody finale. The story twists its way through several unexpected developments, and Hammer keeps the suspense at a high level for most of its length. All the characterisations are

astute, well developed and subtly drawn and Scarsden and Mandy come across as credible characters with flaws and secrets. The tormented Scarsden is particularly well sketched, with Hammer drawing on his own journalistic background to flesh him out. The descriptions of Sydney are vivid and evocative and there are also sharp eyed comments on politics, corruption and the “frippery” of modern media. In all, Trust is a terrific read. I enjoyed the plotting and the rich, evocative descriptions of Scrublands, but I think that Trust is a stronger, more compelling and ultimately more thrilling crime novel. Highly recommended.

Now showing The Trial of the Chicago 7 (MA15+)

In Chicago, 1968, eight disparate, antiVietnam War protesters are charged by the US Government with conspiracy and crossing state lines with the intention of inciting riots at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. In production since 2007, writer and director Aaron Sorkin finally brings the Chicago 7 to our screens despite budget concerns and the Covid-19 pandemic. Based on a true story, Sorkin brings his talents for political and courtroom drama to the fore, weaving a story that more than nods to contemporary political issues regarding US citizens’ freedom of speech and the US Government’s resistance to it. Unlike Molly’s Game and Jobs, Sorkin dials back the selfcongratulatory witty banter to instead flesh out his characters with their own distinct voices based on their personalities and political philosophies. Leaders of distinctive counterculture groups, the main seven, accompanied

by the co-founder of the Black Panther Party, Bobby Seale, were pursued under Richard Nixon’s government. What was to follow was an examination of the right to peaceful protest, police violence, political conspiracies and stances on the Vietnam War. Cinematographer Phedon Papamichael (Ford v Ferrari) endues the movie with a classic, chocolatey hue and vignette, evoking classic courtroom dramas such as 12 Angry Men and Sorkin’s own A Few Good Men. Papamichael lays the landscape for Sorkin to meticulously unfold his story, shamelessly but effectively utilising well-worn tropes of the genre, which, bolstered by excellent performances from an ensemble cast, leads to an excellent payoff. Verdict: An excellent historical drama which serves as a parallel of contemporary times. 4.5 stars. Now screening at cinemas and on Netflix. - Luke McWilliams | themovieclub.net

wellbeing

Getting grounded What does being grounded mean? If we refer to someone as ‘grounded’ we’re saying they’re relaxed, steady and somewhat centered. If you think those qualities sound pretty appealing, then the good news is being grounded is something you can cultivate. The best definition I’ve heard of for being grounded comes from yoga and it starts with simply noticing the connection

between your body and the ground. If you’re in a chair, then you can feel the sensation of the soles of your feet on the floor, or your thighs and buttocks on the chair. It’s a kind of mindfulness practice where you bring your attention into the moment via the doorway of your senses and for a few seconds your mind is steady.

Moving beyond tension and collapse Under stress, most of us move into a state of tension. We wind up to try and meet the intensity of the stressful situation which takes a lot of effort and energy. If the stress passes quickly, we soon recover. However, if it’s a prolonged state of tension, you may find yourself in a state of elevated stress response for hours, days, weeks or even years. Prolonged stress is exhausting, which is why it is typically followed by a state of collapse. It’s the reason why we often get sick at the end of a stressful period; it’s the body’s way of enforcing rest.

Yielding Learning how to be grounded is one way of breaking this series of cycling between tension and collapse. In yoga, being grounded is also referred to as yielding, whereby you yield the weight of your body into the support of the ground beneath

you. Try it now, start by feeling the support of the ground (or chair or bed) beneath you, then try letting the weight of your body sink down into that support. Consciously relax your legs and feet, then let your hips sink down, now let your shoulders drop away from your ears and finally let any tension in your face soften. With the next three exhalations consciously allow your body to yield down further into the support beneath you by inviting your body to let go of any effort it does not need. The beauty of grounding is regardless of whether you have one second or a whole hour, you can use this practice as a way to reset your nervous system. Canberra’s Nara Candle Festival is usually held in the Canberra Nara Peace Park in Lennox Gardens every October, but, as with everything, 2020 will be different. The Japanese-themed gardens have iconic cherry blossom trees and two large stone lanterns - a gift to Canberra from the people of Nara to celebrate our sister city relationship. Official since 1993, Canberra’s proud connection to Nara began with the post-Second World War work of Marist priest, Father Tony Glynn. Father Glynn was so highly regarded by the people of Nara that his 1994 death led a group of citizens to honour his life and work with a documentary film and a named memorial. His work laid the foundations for future connections between the cities, including a variety of exchanges between schools, cultural and sporting groups, Rotary clubs, and professional associations, before an official proclamation in 1993 declared us family forever. Throughout the year, the people of Nara celebrate the spectacular grass-burning ceremony at Mt Wakakusa, water-drawing ceremony at Nigatsudo Hall, lantern-lighting festival at Kasuga Grand Shrine and Nara’s own candle ceremony – which, like good younger sisters, we have emulated. It’s in the spirit of this relationship that we push

through the challenges of 2020 to embrace this cultural exchange. For a fun, Nara-inspired weekend, tap into the cool older sister vibe at home by adding cherry blossoms or lilies, and settle down with the family or some alone time with creative candle making. Finish your evening with food delivery or take out from one of the 20 Japanese restaurants participating in this years’ foodie alternative to the candle festival: Itadakimasu – meaning let’s eat!

Make your own candles Canberra candle maker Natasha Guy has owned Soy Chic Candles for three years. Her store was based at the Kingston Old Bus Depot Markets until its COVID-related closure in March pushed her online. Now, she even delivers! Natasha says candle making is simple in theory – it’s just wax plus fragrance. But unless you’re getting a pre-assembled kit, there’s a lot of testing involved to make sure you have the correct wick for the size of the jar and add a safe amount of fragrance to the wax, to make it bind correctly. “In the end, candles are dangerous if made incorrectly, so if someone who hasn’t had a lot of experience making them wants to give it a go, I would advise go with a ready-made kit first to keep it as safe as possible,” she says.

in the garden

Without lawn areas, Dominique and Leigh’s garden has ample room for a variety of deciduous and evergreen trees.

The garden has many gorgeous flowering plants such as Grevillea ‘Amethyst’, attractive to wildlife and beneficials.

Diversity, spontaneity and heart WITH HORTICULTURIST TRACEY BOOL traceyboolgardenwriter.com

This beautiful garden on a 468sqm block in Dickson is thoughtfully tended by Dominique and her son Leigh, a professional horticulturist. What was a typical 1960s garden when Dominique purchased the property in 1999, i.e. with privet, ivy, conifers and a seemingly neverending compliment of black plastic, has been transformed into a serene oasis with a whole lot of sandy loam, organic matter, mulch and TLC. There is a diversity of plant life from Azaleas to Kangaroo Paws and everything in between – all forming a surprisingly complimentary palette – a clever mix of structure and plant groupings has been utilised alongside spontaneity and a pleasant disregard for typical conventions. Dominique explained they wanted flowers throughout the seasons and to create a welcoming space for wildlife and beneficials. If the resident gang-gang cockatoos grabbing a morning snack before my arrival and the frequently swooping magpies are anything to go by, they have absolutely achieved this design brief. Being free of lawn has enabled the inclusion of numerous ornamental trees including a pink flowering form of Crepe Myrtle, Lipstick Maples, Gingko, Ash, Acacia, Olive and more. Over the years, possums utilising these beauties as their local highway has proven a challenge, but Leigh said it’s a love-hate relationship he’s learnt to live with (if they aren’t screeching like Tasmanian Devils or mowing tree foliage, they are rather adorable). 46

canberraweekly.com.au

Many of the plants are attractive to beneficial insects such as Philotheca myoporoides ‘Profusion’, Grevillea ‘Amethyst’, and Leptospermum ‘Mesmer Eyes’. P. myoporoides ‘Profusion’, commonly known as Wax Flower, is a lovely native shrub with pale pink flowers appearing in late winter and spring and useful in partly-shaded positions. Grevillea ‘Amethyst’ is a hybrid between G. confertifolia and G. sericea, growing as a small, rounded shrub with delightful mauve flowers appearing during spring and popular with native bees and nectar-feeding birds. G. ‘Amethyst’ grows well in full sun to lightly shaded positions, with at least moderate drainage and is ideal in rockeries and cottage style gardens. One of Leigh’s favourites Leptospermum ‘Mesmer Eyes’, is a hardy species of Tea Tree with show-stopping flowers appearing during late spring and tolerates hot, dry conditions and a range of soils. Dominique has several raised planters utilising wasted space behind the garage, which are full of veg, herbs and berries. Nearby, Leigh has a small but productive hothouse for propagation endeavours. A small pond with several crossing branches on top is home to fi sh and frogs as well as being a water source for birds – the branches protect the fi sh from opportunistic fly-bys. The garden is irrigated using Shrubblers, handy emitters with adjustable, water-saving nozzles for a range of applications.

The pond area provides habitat and water for fish, frogs, birds and reptiles – the branches provide protection for the fish and purchase for birds.

A diversity of plants provides year-round interest.

Beds are topped up with mulch twice annually, including from deciduous trees in the garden, creating a more natural look. Organic products such as Dynamic Lifter, Seasol, and Blood and Bone are applied each growing season and new plantings also have gypsum and imported sandy-loam topsoil added.

The happy renovator According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) the value of residential alterations and additions has risen to the highest level in more than four years. ABS Building August approvals found the value of alterations and additions to residential buildings was up 7% to $784 million - the highest level since April 2016. The Happy Renovator author, Werine Erasmus, says many Australians are choosing to use their new-found downtime to start

or finish renovation projects. “The problem with many renovators who attempt to complete projects in their ‘spare time’ is that they often don’t have any time to spare! However, the lockdown created the ideal conditions for many people to restart or finish their renovation projects.” Ms Erasmus believes renovations will keep growing in popularity as more people continue to work from home or perhaps move to part-time employment. “However, renovating property is something that can be a steep, and expensive, learning curve if people don’t understand all of the necessary ins and outs.” More info: thehappyrenovator.com.au

property news

Weekly market wrap Some buyers struggle with current conditions some compromise. But the third? They are an interesting group who self-identify very quickly. For some, it has been decades since they had to contemplate buying and are shocked by a lack of perceived suitable housing options for their next stage in life. Ironically, this shock only exists on the buy side, as they are confident in the value of their own home on the sell side. Others have simply lost their grip on reality and have hope agents can pull the ideal property out of thin air, priced perfectly (generally a steep discount to market value) and sold exclusively to them without competition. I believe multiple market forces will imminently deliver savage blows to these buyers, led by ACT’s rapidly declining rate of unemployment, likely reduction in borrowing costs, scrapping of responsible lending legislation improving access to credit and exceptionally low listing volumes. Since June 2020, ACT and Federal Government stimulus has been flowing into the economy. Property specific stimulus focussed on reducing transaction costs and offered a $25,000 cash grant,

paid post-settlement for specific new property purchases. Some entrepreneurial property developers took the opportunity to match the grant either post-settlement or upfront towards a purchaser’s deposit. In practical terms this meant a purchaser’s contribution towards their deposit of a $700,000 property reduced from $35,000 to just $10,000 with the developer paying the balance. Developers making these offers have generally done so with far broader application than required to receive the Government’s HomeBuilder Grant; a fantastic example of how private sector businesses have used their balance sheets to plug holes in public policy. Positive buyer sentiment is increasingly progressing towards complete urgency which has pushed up property values. It appears increasingly likely market forces will generate higher rates of price inflation, conversely, harshly penalising decision delay.

The Parade tops out

JWLand’s National Head of Development, Michael Prendergast. “The Parade will signify the completion of our journey of realising a thriving new urban precinct that is designed and delivered to stand the test of time”. Once completed, The Parade will be home to 242 one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments, as well as two rooftop gardens and shared kitchen and dining facilities. Construction is expected to be completed next year, with the first residents to move in in mid-2021.

JWLand’s The Parade topped out last week with a ceremony held on the roof to commemorate the milestone.

People who have ever looked for a property to lease or buy may remember the honeymoon phase filled with hope of initially finding the perfect one. It would be located within an ideal suburb, have every feature on the check list and be within budget. Once found, negotiating terms would be nothing more than a formality. Open homes become an eclectic melting pot of discovery for those embarking on their journey to find a property. Market dynamics have created significant buying demand meaning there are plenty of different types of buyers looking. I’ve found they fall into three main categories: the cashed up buyers who have just sold and are on a deadline to move; people who’ve spent varying amounts of time researching the market in anticipation of making their decision soon; and a contingent of people who, for various reasons, are unable or unwilling to comprehend market conditions. Those in the first two groups have a genuine chance of transacting even though it may involve

Canberra developer JWLand has celebrated the topping out of the fifth and final instalment of the Campbell5 precinct, The Parade. The topping out ceremony held on Thursday 15 October marked the completion of the building structure for the $210 million development bordering Constitution Avenue and Anzac Parade. “We are immensely proud of what we have created here in the Campbell5 precinct,” said

A golden opportunity Torrens 13 Kavel Street This family-friendly home in Torrens is the perfect opportunity to enter the highly sought-after Woden Valley area in a home that’s filled with creature comforts. Christine Shaw Properties sales consultant Gillian Thorn says it would be the ideal home for first home buyers, or “families with young children looking to own a home in a popular Woden Valley suburb”. “This home is a great opportunity to take the first step to owning your own home with scope for extension

later on as the family grows,” she says. Features of note in this threebedroom home include a gas fire in the lounge room, updated kitchen with gas cooktop and the partially covered entertaining deck. Two of the three bedrooms include built-in robes and there is ducted gas heating and evaporative cooling throughout. The spacious garden both out the front and in the backyard provides plenty of room for the kids to play, and the bathroom with separate toilet

has been updated. Thorn says the location of 13 Kavel Street is particularly special, close to local schools, shops and the walking trails of Mount Taylor. “The home is situated on a level block set back from the street with lawn and garden beds to the front and rear. Great for families,” she says. “It’s only a short stroll to the Sacred Heart Primary School, with Torrens Primary close by too as well as Marist College and Melrose High School.”

With Mercury retrograde in Scorpio, money could be a contentious issue so don’t be surprised if the temperature between yourself and someone else reaches boiling point. Self-control may be one of your strong suits, but don’t pretend that you have things under control if you don’t.

The focus is on the home and family this month so be prepared to make some changes, especially if you have reached the end of your tether with one family member. A rollercoaster ride may sound exciting, but you could do with something gentler right now.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

Watch your P’s and Q’s when expressing yourself this week, especially with colleagues and superiors. On the health front, try taking some gentle exercise and cutting out anything unhealthy from your diet, as this should make a big difference to your energy levels.

With Mercury retrograde, the focus is on relationships with family members and there may be a need to resolve something you have been doing your best to avoid. Happily, you might find it won’t loom anywhere near as large once you have it out into the open.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

Mercury retrograde indicates you need to be careful of how you deal with friends and colleagues, as someone may not want to cooperate or perhaps they feel left out in some way. While you can’t please everyone all the time, don’t let one person’s negativity deter you from making progress.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

Crossed wires and delays are two of the most likely manifestations of the transit of Mercury retrograde in Scorpio from 14 October to 4 November. So, do everything you can to communicate clearly with others and try to be philosophical if things take longer than you anticipated.

Mercury Retrograde slams the brakes on financial matters, which could make life rather frustrating to say the least. Brick walls may appear where you thought you had a clear run at something. But there are always ways around these obstacles and, Virgo, no doubt you will find them.

You must be careful of being misled or undermined in some way, or of unconsciously sabotaging your own best efforts this week. Trust your instincts and intuitions as you may not get all the answers straight away, but the truth will eventually come to light.

In remote WA, two estranged brothers, Colin (Sam Neil) and Les (Michael Caton), are at war. Raising separate flocks of sheep descended from their family’s prized bloodline, the two men work side by side yet are worlds apart. When Les’s prize ram is diagnosed with a rare and lethal illness, authorities order a purge of every sheep in the valley. While Colin attempts to stealthily outwit the powers that be, Les opts for angry defiance. But can the warring brothers set aside their differences and have a chance to reunite their family, save their herd, and bring their community back together? Catch Rams (PG) in cinemas 29 October.

Enter to WIN Canberra Weekly has 10 x Rams in-season double passes (digital) to be won. SUPPORTING LOCAL BUSINESSES It’s a tough time for small business, so I consciously buy local. Some of my favourite Canberra region gems are Rowdy Digital, Four Winds Vineyard and Mallaluka wines, Three Mills Bakery, Morks Thai and Alison Jackson jewellery.

FAMILY I proudly share my life with my gorgeous crew (husband Rey and son Alex) and am close to my family spread across NSW and Queensland. I’m excited to start passing on family traditions to Alex that I treasure from my own childhood (being Greek, many of them food related!).

Photo Kerrie Brewer

My favourite things Helen Machalias Writer and public affairs executive

Helen Machalias moved to Canberra in early 2018 to join YWCA Canberra as Executive Director, Communication, Advocacy and Engagement. This role allows her to pursue her passion for women’s leadership and violence prevention, and she is an ACT Ministerial Advisory Council for Women member, advisory group member of the Australian Women Against Violence Alliance, and Country to Canberra mentor. As a politics junkie, country girl and new mother, she loves the lifestyle, landscape and opportunities available in the ACT. Helen recently completed a First Seen creative development with The Street Theatre for her new play Barren Ground, set on Christmas Island detention centre, which features elements of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. She has previously worked with The Street to adapt Robin Klein’s People Might Hear You and produce In Loco Parentis, a play about sexual assault on university campuses, which received a Canberra Critics’ Circle Award.

WALKING Walking is how I relax and process ideas, and I often unravel knotty writing problems on foot rather than in front of my computer. Some of my favourite routes nearby are the bridge to bridge walk, Weston Park and Jerrabomberra Wetlands.

TYPEWRITERS Typewriters are a meaningful symbol to me, as I wrote early plays on my Grandma’s typewriter as a kid. Guests wrote us notes on a vintage typewriter for our wedding guestbook, and one of my favourite pieces of jewellery is a bracelet made of typewriter keys that Rey gave me.

KINGSTON I feel very lucky to live in Kingston. We live in an apartment block with community-minded neighbours, and I love Kingston’s convenience, variety of cafes and restaurants, and the proximity to the lake and national cultural institutions.
