This week... From the editor For anyone who watched the ABC Four Corners: Inside the Canberra Bubble episode on Monday night, the culture at Parliament House (aka Canberra) might have come as something of an eye opener. The program revealed an entrenched culture of affairs between (some) senior ministers and staffers. While I don’t judge two adults participating in consensual sexual liaisons, there are issues of power imbalance (staffers are employed by ministers and don’t have the same protections or accountability as public servants), hypocrisy (those same politicians who stand on platforms of traditional/ family values) and compromising national security (opening themselves to potential blackmail). It also unsettles me that people outside of the ACT seem to lump everyone who lives and works here as being part of the “Canberra bubble”. The ACT – those of us who actually live here in the ‘burbs – boasts the most highly educated and most generous population in Australia, as well as the highest volunteering rates in the land. That’s the Canberra I appreciate – not the one symbolised by the big house on the hill. Reasons to be grateful this past week include my first night back seeing live theatre since March with a spellbinding performance of Circa’s Peepshow at Canberra Theatre, fun catching up with friends and family, Jamila’s pumpkin pie, gardening, weekend walks, French spring stew and wheelie bin collections.

news Many local businesses feeling the crunch Research shows COVID-19 damaged the Australian workforce in different ways – many businesses shrank or collapsed, some people lost work hours and others lost their job altogether. On average, Australian employees lost 167 hours of work from March to October, according to research published by The Australian National University this week. That indicated a loss of more than $5,000 for each worker, and a loss of $47 billion for the economy. Canberra Business Chamber CEO, Graham Catt, said Canberra was fortunate to some extent because it was buffered by the number of public sector jobs in the nation’s capital, however, many of the 30,000-plus local businesses were feeling the crunch. “It’s a very mixed story out
there and I think it’s important we understand that although the public sector plays a significant role, Canberra has a large private sector.” ANU researchers said some missing income would have been paid to individuals through JobKeeper, however, the loss of production was still lost to the economy. The ANU report also showed the economic cost of the COVID recession was not evenly distributed across the population. Workers who completed Year 12 and did not have a university degree lost the most working hours, whereas those who did not complete Year 12 lost the least. People born overseas in a non-English speaking country lost a substantially larger number of work hours (104) than an otherwise equivalent Australian-
born worker. The ANU report came in the same week as new analysis from free market think tank, the Institute of Public Affairs (IPA), which indicated small business workers suffered heavier job losses than other sectors. In the first three weeks of October, 325,000 small business workers lost their job, whereas 44,500 big business workers were hired, according to IPA analysis of Australian Bureau of Statistics data. Small businesses were classified as those with fewer than 20 employees, and big businesses had more than 200 employees. Mr Catt said the vast majority of businesses in the ACT were micro and small businesses and approximately 65% of jobs in the Territory existed in the private sector.
Canberra Business Chamber CEO, Graham Catt said many of the ACT’s 30,000-plus local businesses were feeling the crunch due to COVID-19.
“Those statistics and that payroll data figure are interesting, and I think to some extent they apply in the ACT but probably to a lesser extent.” - Rosa Ritchie
Police urge caution on dating apps following blackmail, robbery
The meeting that resulted in blackmail and robbery was arranged via an online dating app.
A meeting arranged via an online dating application, resulting in blackmail and robbery, led to the arrests of an 18-year-old man and a 16-year-old-boy in Canberra on Saturday 7 November. Last Thursday 5 November, the 8

male victim and offenders arranged to meet up on Friday night (6 November). Upon arriving at the chosen destination in Hawker, the victim was approached by two male offenders who threatened him with
a knife and forced him to withdraw $100 from an ATM. They went on to steal things from the victim’s car and demanded he meet them again to provide more money. ACT Policing Detective Matt Reynolds said local police had previously investigated incidents where people found themselves in trouble after arranging to meet a stranger, however, blackmail was uncommon. He suggested the offenders may have used a fake profile to lure the victim. “Sadly, with more people using online dating sites and online applications, some people have decided to use those services to manipulate, threaten or rob others,” he said. “Intimidating someone for property and cash is disgraceful and unacceptable, and when this matter was reported to police, it received a swift response.”
Detective Reynolds reminded the public to act with caution when arranging to meet someone through an online dating site and to choose a safe place to meet. “As with any online service, people need to remember they may be dealing with someone using the internet to take advantage of others.” ACT Policing used online resources and investigative tools to identify the two young people, who were not known to police. Detective Reynolds said the relationship between the alleged offenders was not clear. The 18-year-old was arrested in a hotel in Narrabundah and the 16-year-old was arrested in his home in Hawker. Both alleged offenders faced court on Monday 9 November. The man appeared before the ACT Magistrates Court and the boy appeared before the ACT Children’s Court. - Rosa Ritchie

Qantas has increased its presence in the Canberra market, releasing three new routes to the Sunshine Coast, Cairns and Hobart, following smaller airlines Link Airways and Alliance Airlines starting the same routes in recent weeks.
Qantas boosts competition with three new services Qantas will step into competition with small carriers Link Airways and Alliance Airlines in the Canberra market, last week (6 November) announcing three new routes from the national capital to the Sunshine Coast, Hobart and Cairns. The announcement comes after Link Airways’ first flight to Hobart took off on 5 November, while Alliance Airlines’ double
destination service to the Sunshine Coast and Cairns has been operating since 23 October. Canberra Airport head of aviation Michael Thomson said increasing the number of carriers across routes would ultimately benefit travellers. “I think the opportunity is to have competition which should ultimately be to the benefit of travellers out of Canberra,” he said.
“The prices Link and Alliance have established and the prices Qantas have come out with today (6 November) are really competitive and that’s good for everyone. We believe there is room for everyone, and we want everyone to succeed.” The Qantas flights are set to take off from 19 November to the Sunshine Coast, 21 November to Cairns, and 4 December to Hobart. Qantas Domestic & International CEO Andrew David said the new routes would give Australians the opportunity to explore the country while international borders remain closed. “We’ve taken a fresh look at our network, creating new direct services which were previously only available by connecting via another city, saving customers up to two hours’ travel time,” Mr David said. “These flights are great news for travellers who will now have more direct flights between Canberra and Cairns, Noosa and Hobart. It
will also mean we can get more of our people back to work.” The Hobart and Sunshine Coast routes will operate three times per week, while the Canberra to Cairns route will operate twice weekly. Mr Thomson said the increase in direct flights to Australian locations would hopefully also increase demand. “Certainly, our review of numbers suggests all three of those routes were underserved by virtue of having to stop over somewhere,” he said. “So the direct flights will serve the demand that was already there pre-COVID but should stimulate demand.” The Qantas flights will use the carrier’s Boeing 717 110-seater planes, while Link Airways’ flight to Hobart is on a 34-seater. Alliance Airlines runs its double-destination service to the Sunshine Coast and Cairns on its 100-seat Fokker jet. - Danielle Meddemmen

news This weekend, Diwali celebrations in Canberra will be smaller and more intimate than a typical year, due to COVID-19 restrictions. Diwali is known as the festival of light and is traditionally celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Newar Buddhists. There are many ways to celebrate Diwali, with different deities, traditions and symbolism, and the staff at family-run Kitchen King Grocer’s in Phillip have done their best to make sure this diversity is reflected in the decorations for sale in their glittering Diwali display. Amardeep Shergill, a member of the grocer’s family and staff, said even though Diwali will be different this year, people felt more connected. “In the conversations I’ve been having with customers, they’re obviously feeling it’s been a tough time, and everybody’s gone through a very fearful and uncertain time,” she said. “I feel like they’re celebrating this festival in a different way and it’s much more intimate, a lot more meaningful – not that it wasn’t before
– but this sense of connection I’m feeling is a lot stronger.” Ms Shergill, whose family is Sikh, said the atmosphere in the shop was that Diwali was something that connects all people, from different cultures and religions. “And even now we have people who are not from our culture giving us Diwali wishes and gifts, because they know it’s important to us. “And that really makes me feel there’s something that’s happening here that’s really good, because it’s connecting - we unite people on the basis of difference, not divide them.” The festival arose from a story in the Ramayana - one of the largest ancient epics in world literature. Diwali marks the day Prince Ram returned from 14 years of exile. The citizens, in expectation of his return, lit thousands of glowing lights to guide and welcome him. Today the lamps symbolise the victory of good over evil, the message at the heart of the celebrations. With international and some state borders

closed, Ms Shergill pointed out not everyone will be able to celebrate with family, which made the festive atmosphere in the shop all the more special. “Everybody’s been coming in and loving this, and complimenting it, because it gives them a feeling of Diwali, and home,” she said. “I had one guy who walked in here and then came back again just for the atmosphere.” - Rosa Ritchie

The Aerie advertising moment
The opening of a stunning new $5 million clubhouse at The Aerie at Narrabundah offers residents more opportunities to socialise and connect.
New clubhouse connects and fosters community spirit This year has shown us that connection and belonging are more important than ever. Many in the community, particularly seniors, are experiencing isolation and loneliness resulting from the pandemic. Attention has turned to the design of retirement villages and how it can protect residents from experiencing some of these negative effects. Australian retirement living operator Lendlease is committed to creating an environment that fosters a sense of belonging and support, something they

have more than 30 years’ experience in. Residents at The Aerie at Narrabundah, a brand-new over-55s community, have welcomed the opening of a stunning new $5 million clubhouse providing more opportunities to socialise and connect. The expansive clubhouse boasts an array of purposefully-designed spaces for activities, dining and socialising. This includes an indoor heated swimming pool, gym, lounge, outdoor terrace, hairdressing salon, library and more. Managing Director of Lendlease Retirement Living, Nathan Cockerill, believes The Aerie Clubhouse will become the social hub of the village: “It is a place where residents can meet new people, build friendships, pursue their hobbies or relax with a good book.” Since opening, regular resident-led activity groups are already starting to form, enhancing the emerging vibrant retirement community and increasing opportunities for social interaction. “The clubhouse is so impressive and tastefully decorated. It has everything you need,” said Geoff and Dot Charlton, residents of The Aerie. “It is becoming a great meeting place and the views are magnificent.” The clubhouse and village design, by Demaine Partnership, was inspired by Canberra’s ‘Garden
City’ ideal, which is reflected in the use of generous indoor-outdoor areas, including spacious sheltered balconies, verandahs and alfresco areas. This has allowed residents to enjoy expansive views over the Kowen ranges and the Capital Public Golf Course. There are ample spaces for residents to enjoy, whether they’re unwinding, socialising or entertaining friends and family. Positioned on tree-lined Goyder Street in Narrabundah, The Aerie has introduced a new era of over-55s living to Canberra. Along with incredible facilities, a dedicated and friendly team is on hand to assist new residents with their move, including Sales Manager, Rob Rowe, and Village Manager, Liam Hambridge. A variety of two and three bedroom, singlelevel homes are now selling from $695,000*. With spacious living, dining and modern finishes, lovely aspects and pet-friendly access, these homes are ready to move into now. For a limited time only, new residents can also live fee-free for a year when reserving before 18 December 2020. Terms & Conditions apply. Interested in visiting? 2020 speeding offences overtake 2019 total In the past 10 months, ACT Policing have issued 4,093 speeding fines, overtaking the total of 4,056 infringements issued for the entirety of 2019. Officer in Charge of Road Policing, Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman, said it’s an alarming statistic. “The jump we’ve seen in speeding offences this year is extremely concerning for police … The consequences can be extremely catastrophic,” he said. “We will continue to be out, and we will continue to target this sort of behaviour … we need to remove these idiots from our roads.” Comparing the month-by-month distribution of the ACT’s speeding fines in 2019 and 2020, the months of February, March, April and May saw the largest discrepancy. In February 2019, 372 speeding fines were issued in the ACT
compared to 525 in February 2020; in March 2019, 289 fines were issued compared to 419 in March 2020; in April 2019, 277 fines were issued compared to 545 fines in 2020, a 97% increase; and in May 2019, 279 speeding fines were issued compared to 461 in May 2020. Since June, that year-to-year divergence has mostly tapered off except during October when 313 fines were issued this year, compared to 177 fines in October 2019. Detective Inspector Boorman said he’s seen numerous instances of significant speeding this year, including drivers travelling in excess of 200km/h, and even street racing in broad daylight. “We will continue to actively target speeding, particularly high range speeding, in the community, and we will hold these idiotic drivers to account,” he said.

The Fields advertising moment
Seeking greener pastures Dreaming of swapping the hustle and bustle for a more peaceful way of life? Canberra couple Chris Kafer and Claire Lubransky are turning their dreams into a reality with the purchase of a large rural block only 45 minutes from Canberra. Whether it’s rising house prices, the stress of city living or the yearning for more space, many Australians are dreaming about the benefits of a tree change. And with the Covid-19 pandemic proving that you can work from anywhere, turning that dream into a reality is now within most people’s reach. So, when Chris and Claire heard about The Fields, an exclusive development in Murrumbateman that offers picturesque rural blocks up to 14,000sqm, the decision to make the move was a complete no-brainer. “We’d always talked about living rurally in the future and how it would be the ideal location to raise a family,” says Claire. “And we’d been particularly interested in Murrumbateman because it’s still so close to Canberra. The Fields is just perfect for us because you can get really decent sized blocks at a good price, leaving you with enough money to build a great home.” Working in the public service in the city centre, Claire has the option to work from home and commute into the office a few days a week. Chris on the other hand, will actually be shortening his commute between home and where he works at the ANU Research School of Physics. “Claire currently owns a property in Canberra, and I have one in Yass that we bought individually as investments,” he explains. “So, I’ll actually be cutting my commute down by half an hour. Most people have a fear of driving anywhere longer than 20
minutes. But Murrumbateman is a really happy medium in terms of maintaining that rural lifestyle versus not having very far to commute.” When talking about their expectations for the future, both Chris and Claire are very excited about having the space do what they want. “With all that room to move, I can build a big shed for my boat and my tools. We can grow our own fruit and veggies and have a mini paddock for animals such as sheep and goats. And eventually we can have a big play area for our kids with a cubby house and a trampoline.” “We’re both pretty ecoconscious,” adds Claire. “Our new home will have solar panels and one of the requirements for building there is to have a big water tank, which will automatically irrigate our plants. So, we’ll be quite self-sufficient.” But as much as they’re looking forward to the privacy and freedom that all that space will afford them, they’re equally keen to become part of a connected community. “We’re both really looking forward to meeting our neighbours and having people over for BBQ’s,” says Chris. “That feeling of being part of a tight knit community is really important to us and it seems like Murrumbateman has likeminded people out there who want the same rural lifestyle that we do.” “I didn’t realise how bustling Murrumbateman is,” adds Claire. “It has medical facilities, cafes and
restaurants, a preschool and the Murrumbateman markets every weekend. And we love the fact it has so many wineries. In fact, we had a celebratory lunch at Shaw Vineyard when we bought the block. We are very excited to visit the other wineries and we will definitely be going back to Shaw given our block
will only be about 800 metres away from the cellar door and restaurant!” Colliers International Residential Land Director, Josh Reid was thrilled to walk Claire and Chris on-site, helping them through the sales process of securing their new home. For more information contact him on 0432 423 699.
5 reasons to consider a tree change Better quality of life Whether it’s connecting with nature on a daily basis, giving kids the freedom and space to spend more time outdoors, or enjoying a slower pace of life, living rurally affords you unique lifestyle opportunities that you simply can’t find in the city. Room to pursue your dreams Always dreamed of having your own tennis court? Or an artist’s studio? Or running a little B&B? These opportunities are limited by space in metropolitan areas. Whereas with a large rural block of land, the potential for exploring your hobbies or interests are endless. Healthier living Aside from the fresh country air, living rurally gives you the space to own animals and grow your own produce, free from preservatives and additives. All that room is more conducive to an active lifestyle. And a slower pace of life can also reduce stress levels. Greater sense of community With so many tree changers moving to smaller towns, there are opportunities to create tight knit communities of like-minded people who share the same lifestyle values as you. Best of both worlds Canberra is unique in that it gives you the ability to easily commute in and out of the city to take advantage of career and study opportunities, whilst enjoying all of the benefits of a country lifestyle with regional attractions right on your doorstep.

A Planet Ark report has found recycling creates more jobs than sending waste to landfill. Getty.
Did you know recycling is worth $15.5 billion? New research shows most Australians recycle to reduce landfill or because they believe it’s the right thing to do, yet very few realise recycling contributes $15.5 billion to the Australian economy. In a national survey of 1,000 Australians aged 14-64, only 8% of
participants correctly estimated the economic value of recycling, while 80% underestimated or said they didn’t know its value. The report from not-for-profit environmental organisation Planet Ark argued that transitioning to a circular economy would be
beneficial during the COVID-19 economic recovery phase, providing an estimated $23 billion boost to Australian Gross Domestic Profit by 2025. Planet Ark deputy CEO, Rebecca Gilling, said the majority of councils surveyed for the study reported more general waste in kerbside bins as a result of COVID-19. “Recycling is valuable both environmentally and economically, and is more important than ever in light of the coronavirus pandemic,” she said. Every 10,000 tonnes of materials recycled created 9.2 jobs, whereas when the same materials went to landfill it created just 2.8 jobs, Planet Ark reported. Three-quarters of Australians were concerned about waste, however, motivations to recycle differed. Reducing landfill was most important for older people, whereas for younger generations it was the potential to combat climate change and save wildlife that was the most inspiring. The study found women were
more likely to recycle than men, and Australians in regional areas were more likely to take action than city dwellers. Planet Ark’s head of circular economy programs, Ryan Collins, said every Australian could help make resource recovery part of the national and local economic recovery. “What we call waste is a sign of inefficiency,” he said. Waste in the ACT halved around the turn of the century, when waste sent to landfill reduced from nearly 60% of total waste in 1996 to 30% in 2004, according to the ACT Waste Management Strategy 2011-2025. The goal of the current strategy is to achieve full resource recovery and a carbon neutral waste sector. During National Recycling Week, 9-15 November, the ACT Government is sponsoring a variety of free online and faceto-face workshops and events; visit cityservices.act.gov.au/ recyclopaedia/national-recyclingweek for details. - Rosa Ritchie
School excursions resume

The iconic Canberra school excursions are slowly returning, after COVID-19 and travel restrictions halted Australian kids from checking out the national capital’s best sites. The first school group to fly into Canberra since pandemic restrictions began in March, Adelaide’s Playford College visited Australian Parliament House earlier this week (Tuesday 10 November). After touring Parliament House, the children were met by Tourism Investment Minister Senator Simon Birmingham and Member for Spence Nick Champion. During 2019, over 170,000 students visited Canberra on
school excursions, which ceased in early March this year due to the pandemic. While the Adelaide school was the first to fly into the ACT, for their visit from 10 to 13 November, some regional NSW schools started making the trip last week. However, Playford College was the first school to be in the same building with federal politicians since March, after the venue had been closed to visitors during Parliamentary sittings. The rest of the trip will see the school group head to more classic Canberra locations. To find out more about the resumption of school excursions to Canberra, see a longer version of

news How NAIDOC Week came to be Delayed because of COVID and absent its annual national awards, NAIDOC Week (8-15 November) is finally here and it’s time to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Australia hasn’t always celebrated Indigenous culture and people didn’t just wake up one day and decide to do it. Australia celebrates NAIDOC Week after generations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders fought for it. NAIDOC now stands as the name of the celebratory week, but it is an acronym of National Aborigines Islanders Day Observance Committee, which contains language now considered outdated and offensive. NAIDOC points to Aboriginal activists’ groups of the 1920s for its
origins and two groups specifically who ran Aboriginal-led boycotts of Australia Day celebrations. In 1924, Indigenous Australians’ first politically organised activist group, the Australian Aborigines Progressive Association (AAPA), was founded. According to the National Museum of Australia, AAPA had a membership of around 500 people. It called for the abolition of the NSW Aborigines Protection Board, which was involved in the lives of Aboriginal people, and demanded Indigenous affairs be managed by Indigenous people. AAPA held street rallies, conferences, wrote letters to newspapers and petitioned political leaders. Organisers wanted to stop the removal of Aboriginal children from their families, gain equal citizenship, protect Aboriginal

cultural identity and ensure Indigenous communities and families could provide for themselves and their future through land ownership. AAPA leader Fred Maynard was banned from entering NSW missions and reserves by the Aboriginal Protection Board. National Museum of Australia said the Inspector General of the NSW Police, who was also the Chair of the Protection Board, increased police intimidation of AAPA members, including threats to imprison members or remove their children. Under strong pressure from government and law enforcement agencies, the organisation ceased widespread public activity at the end of 1927. In 1932, the Aborigines Advancement League (AAL) took up where they left off, with its founder William Cooper petitioning the King for Aboriginal electorates in Federal Parliament. On Australia Day 1938, the AAL joined with the NSW Aborigines Progressive Association to call for a national day of mourning. Protestors marched through the streets of Sydney, in what is considered one of the first major civil rights gatherings in Australia. The Day of Mourning was held annually on the Sunday
before Australia Day from 1940 until 1955 and was known as Aborigines Day. In 1955, Aborigines Day was shifted to the first Sunday in July after it was decided the day should become not simply a protest day but also a celebration of Aboriginal culture. As a major outcome of the 1967 referendum, the Department of Aboriginal Affairs was formed in 1972. In 1974, the NADOC committee was composed entirely of Aboriginal members for the first time. The following year, it was decided that the event should cover a week, from the first to second Sunday in July. In 1984, NADOC asked that National Aborigines Day be made a national public holiday, to help celebrate and recognise the rich cultural history that makes Australia unique. This has not happened. However, the ACT marks Reconciliation Day with a public holiday on the first Monday on or after 27 May, the date of the 1967 referendum. In 1991, the distinct cultural and historical differences between the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander people was recognised and NADOC became NAIDOC. - Cassandra Power

WorkSafe ACT has issued more than 50 notices in the Gungahlin suburb of Throsby. On Wednesday 4 November, WorkSafe ACT inspected 18 residential construction sites in the suburb where inspectors issued 12 prohibition notices, largely relating to unsafe scaffolding; 42 improvement notices; and four infringement notices to the value of over $11,000, largely relating to unsafe electrical and risk of falls.
The ACT’s Work Health and Safety Commissioner, Jacqueline Agius, said WorkSafe ACT’s inspectors have been “alarmed” by a lack of compliance on residential construction sites in greenfield suburbs. “It’s time to get real about safety in the ACT. The safety culture needs to improve so workers in this industry can go home safely at the end of their shift,” she said.

The three new pups, Josie, Chester and Basil, enjoy fish for lunch during feeding time.
Otterly adorable: Canberra’s zoo welcomes its first otter pups Parenting came naturally to Pai and Bal, the proud first-time parents of three Asian Small-clawed Otter pups at the National Zoo and Aquarium, according to Wildlife and Grounds Manager, Bec Scott. Ms Scott said it was particularly exciting because,
although the zoo had housed otters for nearly 20 years, this was its first litter of otter pups. “In zoos, first-time parents can be a little bit tricky; like a first-time parent for a human baby, you’ve got to learn the skills needed to be able to raise your offspring,” Ms Scott said.
“Keepers always stand by cautiously watching new parents because you never know whether they’re going to be good at it or not. “Every step of the way our otter parents have been amazing. They’ve really tended to the babies, made sure they’ve grown up to the amazing little creatures they are today.” The litter of three includes one female pup, Josie, and two boys named Chester and Basil. When it comes to sharing domestic duties, zookeeper Em Davies said, “Dad usually takes over, unless there’s food involved”. “They always keep me on my toes! They’re frantic, they’re energetic, they push boundaries they’re so much fun. “And they’re so intelligent! You can teach otters to do a lot of different things.” The four-month-old pups still have a lot to learn, including water safety. Swimming lessons occurred
in a baby pool at first, and until they’re strong swimmers, the jet stream in the otter enclosure will stay turned off. Ms Scott said otters were surprisingly underdeveloped when they’re born, and they spend the first six weeks of life in a nest. “They don’t even have their eyes open, and slowly but surely they start to develop. From six weeks they learn to swim.” The pups were born as part of a regional breeding program and in the wild, otters are considered a vulnerable species. Asian Small-clawed Otters are typically found in waterways, rivers and rice fields and the species is threatened by habitat destruction, pollution and agricultural development. Ms Scott said there can be anywhere between one to six pups in an otter litter. “So for us, three is perfect.” - Rosa Ritchie

cwm advertising feature PIPELINE TALENT: A THRIVING INDIGENOUS BUSINESS Rachelle Towart of Pipeline Talent was named Indigenous Business Woman of the Year at last week’s 2020 Canberra Women in Business Awards. An Indigenous recruitment company that brings together departments and organisations with highly qualified Indigenous candidates for management and executive roles, Ms Towart was inspired to start her business four years ago after she became aware of how low Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander hiring rates were across Australia’s corporate and government sectors. “I woke up the next day and said ‘I’m going to be a recruiter’ and that’s been a difficult challenge because no one tells you how to be a recruiter,” she said. “Good project management, good communication and good relationships have been the key, and it’s also hard work.” Starting out on her own in a home office, Pipeline Talent grew to move into a shared office and then a bigger
shared space before 12 months ago moving into their own office in Kingston. The flourishing business now employs six staff. “We haven’t been affected by COVID, which is good, we’ve been building on business,” Ms Towart said. “To make things work, we’ve been looking at how to not pivot the business but push the business to make it bigger and better so when corporations and government are looking for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander talent, they come to us.” Another point of different for Pipeline Talent is that they provide their candidates with their first 100 days’ coaching as part of the placement. “We’ve not had to use a recruitment replacement guarantee because of the 100-day coaching we provide,” Ms Towart said. Every year brings challenges, new ideas and new opportunities, however 2020 certainly delivered a challenge that none of us could have predicted or planned for. In the face of the unknown, and while watching the distressing news from abroad, Canberran’s did what they do best, banding together, listening to their leaders and working with a common goal of getting through this as a team rather than an individual. Capital Psychology Clinic certainly felt the pressure of a global pandemic impact and the need to increase support for our community while also ensuring the health and safety of our staff. We were thankful for the introduction of telehealth options to focus our attention on providing our community high level care during such a confronting time, however we have also had to re-think how we can continue to service an even broader range of those in our community while waitlists for psychological care increased in Canberra. To meet these demands, CPC has been working hard, not only to expand our team for one to one therapy options, but to also think outside the box as to what other services will help as many Canberran’s as possible.

Since starting her Indigenous recruitment agency four years ago, Rachelle Towart has grown Pipeline Talent from a microbusiness in her own home to employing six staff in their Kingston office.
Rachelle Towart of Pipeline Talent was named the Indigenous Business Woman of the Year at the 2020 Canberra Women in Business Awards on Thursday 5 November.
In 2021 we are rolling out a full group program that allows us to provide small group therapy every day of the week, for children from 5 years to 17 years and young adults 18+ years. We are excited to also provide online resources such as e-books and seminars for individuals, parents, teachers and children. As we expand our way of servicing Canberra, we welcome you to follow us on social media where we also provide frequent blogs, information and research based posts to help many different concerns and problems, and to also encourage everyone to use each day as an advantage and take time out for themselves. While 2020 will be remembered as one of the biggest challenges some of us will ever face, it will also be remembered for when Canberra stayed strong and worked together to ensure we come out the other side as one. We are proud to be Canberran’s and we will continue to provide the ongoing, innovative and new support options to our community. We thank our community for their support and for the nomination and achievement of being 2020 finalists in the Canberra Women’s Business awards. Thank you Canberra!
Are you looking for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander talent to fill your next executive role? Pipeline Talent has a talent pool of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders who are ready to be appointed on merit to executive positions in private enterprise, government, and not-for-profit organisations as well as to non-executive roles or temporary ‘blue collar’ vacancies. Pipeline Talent uses its vast network to grow this unique capability. This is how we are creating a pipeline of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander talent. Australian organisations are committed to considering Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates but often don’t know where to look. Pipeline Talent is Australia’s first Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander recruitment company – we are 100% Indigenous owned and are certified by Supply Nation.

Founded 15 years ago by 2019 CWB Business Woman of the Year, Christine Marr, Bookssorted works with contractors to support their needs; they do not believe in one size fits all. For one flat fee of 1.75%, Bookssorted supports contractors (especially those working in IT) to maximise their pay through salary sacrifice, rainy day accounts and a wealth of other payroll services. As a people-first organisation, Bookssorted has a social impact initiative that provides $1 per pay to Lifeline Canberra to help Lifeline answer more calls, train more crisis supporters and continue to support people in crisis in our community. And they donate each dollar from their pockets/profit, not from their contractors’ pays. Bookssorted contractors take pride in the fact that by simply using Bookssorted’s payroll services, they are contributing to community support and resilience. They are making an impact with their payroll provider choice. Since the initiative’s inception in March this year, Bookssorted has donated $9,894 to Lifeline Canberra – funding 380 life-changing calls. SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR CAPITAL PSYCHOLOGY CLINIC INNOVATES THE WAY FORWARD Like any innovative business, Dr Eryn Davies and Jenna Keen – joint recipients of the 2020 Canberra Women in Business Small Business Woman of the Year award – saw a gap and filled it. Both Eryn and Jenna are clinical psychologists educated at the University of Canberra, experienced in Canberra’s public health system and now they are the brains trust behind Capital Psychology Clinic. Their diverse team of psychologists and administration staff is guided by their strong female leadership, their commitment to delivering high-level care, and a strong team culture and work life balance for their staff. Eryn said the year that was 2020 had pushed mental health and psychological services to the forefront, reduced the stigma surrounding mental health and drove the industry to modernise service delivery. “Our team has worked hard and thought outside of the box to help as many people as possible,” she said. “COVID has lowered the stigma and more people are willing to consult. “I want to acknowledge the pressures of
our frontline services, and people dealing with financial effects of the pandemic.” Eryn and Jenna have worked hard to meet their increased demand by producing online support including e-books, social media support and telehealth, which they say has been a game changer. They service the wider community for the full suite of adult psychological services including parenting support and counselling. They specialise in young adult and children’s therapy, with social skills, ADHD and Autism assessments and a range of innovative approaches to therapy. Their group therapy options include a focus on Lego, Secret Agent Society, the Peers program and getting out in the real world for activities such as rock climbing, games and bowling. Capital Psychology Clinic has built strong networks with the Canberra community including the education sector, providing opportunities for masters level students. Summer seafood
Enjoy a summer seafood lunch with these recipes brought to you by our food writer, Libby Kimber. Recipes from Easy Gluten Free by Helen Tzouganatos, Published by Plum, RRP $39.99, Photography by Jeremy Simons.
Crispy salt and pepper squid with mint and parsley Serves 4-6 120g (1 cup) tapioca flour or 160g (1 cup) potato starch 1 Tbsp sea salt flakes 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper 2 egg whites 5 whole squid (roughly 1 kg), cleaned, tentacles removed, hoods sliced into 1 cm rings and flat pieces scored Extra-virgin olive oil, for deep-frying Handful of mint leaves, finely chopped Handful of flat-leaf parsley leaves, finely chopped Lemon wedges, to serve
Combine the flour, salt and pepper in a shallow bowl. Whisk the egg whites in a second bowl. Dip the squid in the egg white, allowing the excess to drip off, then coat well in the flour, dusting off the excess. Heat enough olive oil for deep-frying in a large, deep frying pan until it reaches 180°C on a kitchen thermometer (or until a cube of gluten free bread dropped in the oil browns in 15 seconds). Add the squid in batches (so you don’t overcrowd the pan) and cook for 1–2 minutes or until crisp and lightly golden. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a wire rack with paper towel underneath to stop the squid going soggy. Finish with the fresh herbs, sprinkle with salt and serve hot with lemon wedges.
Garlic prawns, lime and chilli summer spaghetti Serves 4 350 g gluten-free spaghetti 3 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, plus extra for drizzling 3 garlic cloves, finely grated 1/4 tsp dried chilli flakes Finely grated zest and juice of 1 lime, plus extra lime wedges to serve 20 large raw prawns, peeled and deveined, tails intact Sea salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper Handful of flat-leaf parsley leaves, finely chopped Cook the spaghetti according to the packet instructions until al dente. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over medium–low heat, add the garlic, chilli flakes and lime zest and cook for 30 seconds. Add the prawns and a good pinch of salt and pepper and cook for 2 minutes until they just turn opaque. Using tongs, transfer the spaghetti directly into the pan, dragging along some of the pasta water to create a silky sauce. Toss to combine and cook for 1 minute, then add the lime juice and parsley and toss again. Divide the pasta among four plates, drizzle with extra olive oil, finish with a grinding of pepper and serve with a wedge of lime.

Now showing Radioactive (M) In 1934, an elderly Marie Curie (Rosamund Pike) collapses in her Parisian laboratory. In hospital, Marie flashes back to 1893 where she is continuously rejected for funding. Soon, Marie meets handsome fellow scientist Pierre Curie (Sam Riley). Adapted from the 2010 graphic novel, the movie uses more dramatic licence as opposed to a straight biography. Radioactive is a rich production; beautiful framing, rich colours (predominately green) against an eerie score utilising a theremin that invokes the odd, unknown supernatural sci-fi ambience of 1950s movies. Scenes of imaginative surrealism add to the feeling of being on the precipice of the unknown, having discovered a phenomenon with questionable applications, and unimaginable effects on the world. While Marie is shown to be hampered in her career due to her
gender, she is played as being needlessly objectionable, almost purposefully self-sabotaging her professional and private life. Marie behaves like the radiated particles she has discovered: they don’t act like they are expected to. As Pierre explains, Marie threw a stone in the water, but she cannot control the toxic ripples. Along with her discovery of radioactivity, we see how her personal choices negatively affect her, the people around her, and generations throughout history. While Radioactive does touch on the benefits of radioactivity, it comes too late in the day and fails to balance out the toxic terrors that the movie alludes to throughout. Verdict: A beautiful looking and well-acted movie with confused messaging regarding Marie Curie’s life and its fallout. 3 stars. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net
Shore Leave by David Whish-Wilson Fremantle Press, $32.99
David Whish-Wilson is one of the best purveyors of gritty, hardboiled Australian crime fiction and his series about Perth detective Frank Swann in the 1980s is outstanding. Shore Leave revolves around the arrival of a US aircraft carrier at Fremantle and the resultant chaos caused by the murder of two women, apparently by a US sailor, and a plan to steal a cache of guns. Caught up in it all is Swann, who also has to deal with an escaped prisoner seeking revenge and a crooked bunch of cops from the Gold Squad. Tense and very exciting, it is a thrilling ride through the dark underbelly of 1980s Perth.

Active kids: learning and practising movements As this year draws to a close, it’s time to start thinking of what we can do for healthy movement and exercise for our kids over the summer break. Now is a great time to think about teaching some simple movements and good motor skills. This will help children learn body awareness and develop their natural athletic ability.
I believe that if you let children learn to be free with movement, then their natural athleticism will shine through. When kids are growing up, they will naturally find a walking/running gait, as well as spatial awareness, awareness of their movements and hand-eye coordination. This understanding is their inherent athletic skill. Through play and

Murals of wonder WITH HOME EDITOR, CASSANDRA POWER
Born and raised in Isaacs, Canberra designer Kate Succar says that even as a child she felt like “a natural artist”. Influenced by fantasy and surrealist art, Kate’s childhood was filled with Salvador Dali and Maurits Cornelis Escher art, Graeme Base books and Harry Potter and The Hobbit novels. Kate says a childhood of wonder was the foundation for her Will o’ The Wisp mural wallpaper design business. At 19, Kate left Canberra to study a Bachelor of Design at the University of New South Wales, where she refined her talents and adapted them for the digital world. Kate is now a mother of three and uses that life experience to inspire her love of interior design. Combining surrealism and highly detailed fantastical worlds onto wallpaper, she describes herself and her art as quirky and creative. “It started as a quirky idea intended for my personal home, but soon I realised the magic of these wallpapers in transforming a space and the wonder it could bring to others,” Kate says. “All my wallpaper designs take the viewer on a visual journey. “There is more than meets the eye in my works of art and I always add funny sayings, jokes and quirky elements to encourage deeper exploration.” Kate says her creative process involves inspiration from fairy tales and a strong indulgence of her imagination.
“Usually it takes an initial character or theme to get the ball rolling and ideas just flow after that,” Kate says. “For custom wallpaper designs, I research the client, space, overall message and adapt my artistic talents to create a balance of these things in an innovative and unconventional way.” Kate was inspired by the classic tale of Alice In Wonderland for her design titled, Wonderland – a mature and sophisticated adaptation of the classic story, laced with references to the trials Alice went through. Although Wonderland was designed for a mature audience, Kate says it’s her wallpaper creations for children that are most dear to her heart. “These wallpapers have fantastical characters that encourage children to make up stories about what they see in the design. “I also add a fun list of things buyers can find with their families.” For example, Kate’s Whimsical Woodland design invites her audience on an adventure to find a thief of the dragon’s treasure. Kate has now branched out into more conventional designs and has a growing arm of her business creating custom designs for businesses, including a recently completed custom wallpaper design for a new age café in Belmore, Sydney. “It has a brand-new home feel.” Standout features include high, vaulted ceilings, herringbone flooring and natural light due to the home’s northerly aspect and heavenly skylights. With more than 200sqm of living space, 45 Legge Street boasts an open-plan living area that overlooks the entertaining deck, as well as a separate lounge room for the kids or a parents’ retreat. The main bedroom enjoys separation from the other bedrooms and boasts an opulent ensuite with luxury fixtures and fittings such as underfloor heating, which is also present in the main bathroom. Outside, the luxury features continue with automated irrigation,
a sunken patio area with firepit and an electric vehicle charging station, alongside the two-car garage with internal access. “The home could easily suit young families or even downsizers as it’s all on one level, fully landscaped and has very manageable gardens,” Bunday says. “It’s located not far from the light rail and a short walk to the buzzing Dickson precinct as well as the local Downer shops.”

property news
Weekly market wrap New developments: changing the conversation New development tends to evoke strong responses from the community. Looking at media articles posted on the internet promoting upcoming community consultations, it becomes evident some people either do not want to, or are unwilling to, participate in change. This causes a potentially adversarial dilemma where property developers seek to achieve highest and best use for their sites and the community seeks to moderate their approval outcomes. Canberra’s population requires a diverse range of housing options which accommodate our rapidly evolving lifestyle preferences. Twenty to 30 years ago it was realistic to think people would mostly want to reside in free-standing homes on large blocks. Now, large apartments loaded with highlevel inclusions located close to lifestyle amenities are in significant demand, evidenced by a recently released report by CommSec which found the average size of a multi-unit dwelling in Canberra had increased by 40.2% in the last 12 months. In my experience, public objections towards new developments incorrectly focus their attention on height and number of dwellings. It begs the question: are 4.5m wide, three-storey townhouses designed to have living areas above tandem garaging really a better design outcome than a similarly sized, single-level apartment which will likely have higher level inclusions? Assuming the apartment is not on the ground floor with a big courtyard, both would have a balcony, however, the apartment would be far easier to furnish. Are developers of townhouses like the narrow, three-storey one described above who pitch their product to the affordable end of the market

creating better community outcomes than a beautiful, architecturally designed apartment building with three times the number of dwellings? I believe this is the conversation we are not having, and we need to. Molonglo Falls in Coombs makes a great case study for this thinking. The developer, Zapari, proposed increasing the number of dwellings in return for delivering the highest quality building in Molonglo Valley. Once approved, additional dwellings made investing in a Cox Architecture design with multiple resident amenities commercially viable. Purchasers from the area drove initial sales. Their feedback perceived the offering as comparable to, if not better than, projects in Kingston or Canberra City, at a fraction of the price. Molonglo Falls’ positive impact spans

multiple generations. Parents and grandparents have been able to secure large low-maintenance homes in the area they are familiar with, new families are upgrading to larger homes with more outdoor space, and first home buyers can stay close to their family support. Seeing how these buildings can enable people to realise their dreams of more certainty, more space or more time is very rewarding. This is why I believe our communities need to adopt a meritbased approach to considering new development proposals or risk being trapped in a doom loop, stifling innovation. Editor’s note: Sam Dodimead is a selling agent for Zapari’s Molonglo Falls development in Coombs.
Colliers’ Paul Powderly celebrates 32 years Colliers International’s Paul Powderly says his 32 years with the company – making him the organisation’s current longest serving employee in the country – have flown by. “You don’t really notice the time go by when you’re having fun and you’ve got great people around you,” he says. Powderly is Colliers’ ACT State Chief Executive, having started with the company in his early twenties. He says he’s grown alongside the organisation, which helped change the scene of commercial property in Canberra – from
limited development to a “dynamic market”. “Canberra’s growing up and so Colliers has grown with it, and that’s why I’ve enjoyed staying here.” After a tumultuous year for many an industry, Powderly says his focus for now is guiding the office and his team through the COVID-19 crisis, before eventually handing over the reins to the next generation. “My goal is to transition the business, like it was transitioned to me,” he says. An unrivalled position Wamboin NSW 64 Finn Place Tucked in a “quiet corner” of Wamboin, this home sits in secluded serenity, whilst being a stone’s throw to Sutton Road with easy access to Canberra and Queanbeyan. McGrath North Canberra sales agent Michael Fay says this solarpassive home is ideal for families with young or teenage children, with an abundance of space on offer for a wide range of activities. “Or, buyers who simply want to enjoy the peace and serenity of this unrivalled position in Wamboin, yet be close to the city amenities,” he says. Set over 20 acres, 64 Finn Place boasts the main four-bedroom residence as well as a twobedroom cottage. Fay says the main house is orientated for maximum solar efficiency, with floor-to-ceiling double-glazed windows to maximise natural light and the sweeping views of the valley. “Soaring ceilings accentuate the sense of space, and there is gloss hardwood flooring throughout,” he says. “A sublime ModWood decking outdoor entertaining area, accessed from the kitchen
through wide sliding back doors, and shaded by sails, is perfect for entertaining large groups or family. “The separate two-bedroom cottage, currently with Airbnb as a short-term rental, offers income potential, or the flexibility of space for guests or extended family,” Fay says. The main house boasts two living areas, a main bedroom with walk-in robe and ensuite with bath, and a large open kitchen with views to the outdoor deck and beyond. “Work from home in the superb office/library setup, and still be close to the office for face-to-face meetings,” says Fay.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB
The New Moon on the 15th will bring success on many different fronts for you. This is the ideal time to get on the phone to sort something out! When it comes to family or distant relatives, there will be a great sense of responsibility here for you.
Luck is with you in connection with money and if something has been delayed, it may come through this month. The New Moon on the 15th indicates that a letter or email to a friend may be just the thing to perk you up, especially if you’ve been feeling lonely.
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR
Logic takes a backseat as you are learning to rely on your instincts. The New Moon on the 15th indicates you’re going to want solitude but may not be able to get it, so turn the TV on to a travel program and simply dream that you’re on that tropical beach!
The New Moon on the 15th heightens your interest in international affairs and your desire to travel will be strengthened. It is a good time to rely on your instincts as they won’t let you down and you are likely to be at your intuitive best.
The New Moon on the 15th is a good time to have a talk with your loved ones about your future strategy. You may decide on a move of property, a sensible budget or that you can spend a little more on luxuries, such as travel or visiting friends.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE This is a good time to complete any jobs that need doing. The 15 November New Moon indicates you will have the drive and initiative to make the most out of your prospects. You are going to be forced to stand out from the crowd and make your mark.
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT Developments in the lives of your siblings, neighbours, colleagues and relatives will have an extra importance. The New Moon on the 15th is the ideal time to leap into action and get things done, so you won’t be able to resist picking up the phone, sending emails and getting things moving.

PEST CONTROL
Misbehaviour (M) is a comedy-drama based on the real events of the 1970 Miss World Beauty competition that made global headlines, after the newly formed Woman’s Liberation Movement disrupted the live broadcast to protest the objectification of women, and the coveted crown was awarded to a black woman for the first time. With an all-star cast including Keira Knightley, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Rhys Ifans and Greg Kinnear. In cinemas 26 November.

WIN! $120 Biome Eco Stores voucher
Be part of the slow fashion movement by shopping at Biome Eco Stores. The slow fashion movement is the antithesis of fast fashion. It champions transparency, sustainable fabrics, fair treatment of those who make clothes, environmentally responsible production, and innovation. Slow fashion is about respecting a slower process, loving a garment for longer, knowing the maker, appreciating fabric, building a wardrobe of beautiful staples and banishing the idea that outfit repeating is a sin. All featured labels have been carefully researched to ensure they are ethical and sustainable, and are made using natural fibres and materials. Shop sustainable fashion for women, men, and kids at biome.com.au

My favourite things MY DOGS, WINTSON AND CHARLOTTE Animals are one of the best mental health support networks and my dogs are no different. When I am at my worst they are by my side, when I feel alone they snuggle up to me, when I need to be heard they put those big ears to use.
MY FAMILY
Photo Kerrie Brewer
My parents literally saved my life. They stuck by me when I pushed them away and gave me the strength to keep on fighting for myself and others who need. My husband to be loves me despite my difficulties and makes me a better person just by knowing him.
Rose Clifford
Young Canberra Citizen of the Year 2020
Rose Clifford wasn’t Canberra born and raised but is proud to call the national capital home after relocating here at the start of her high school years. Following her own struggle with an eating disorder throughout university, the 25-year-old is now an advocate for young people’s mental health. She was recently named Young Canberra Citizen of the Year 2020 for the work through MIEACT, designing and delivering mental health programs to high-school children. Amid this, Rose splits her time between volunteer work in the Lifeline Canberra call centre, researching for her PhD and tutoring at the Australian National University. When she’s not striving to make the world a better place, she lives with her soon-to-be husband Alister and their two King Charles Spaniel’s Winston and Charlotte, spending her downtime baking and dreaming about travel. - Danielle Meddemmen
MENTAL HEALTH ADVOCACY Ever since I was little I had always stood up for others when they couldn’t for themselves. Through my advocacy work in mental health, I am able to do just that in an area I am passionate about. Helping others find their own voice and strength is incredibly fulfilling.
TRAVEL
Exploring and experiencing other cultures is an amazing thing. The world is filled with such diversity in people, cultures and landscapes. I’ve only just started seeing it and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of seeing this beautiful world. I just might have to wait a little longer.
BAKING Baking for me is a stress release. As an anxious person I can get very overwhelmed by uncertainty and disorganisation. Baking is simple, has step by step instructions, is scientific and has a predictable outcome. This gives me the chance to let go of all my anxieties and relax.
