This week... From the editor The first in the series of ‘word of the year’ winners has been announced, which indicates we’re nearing the butt end of 2020, a year dominated by coronavirus (once the bushfires, smokewaves and hailstorm had passed). Little surprise then, that ‘iso’ – short for isolation – has been chosen by the Australian National Dictionary Centre as its very Aussie word of the year. Of course, it’s a typically laconic Australian (Aussie) trait to abbreviate words, saving milliseconds, reducing syllables and minimising energy required to enunciate polysyllabic words. Strewth. In this case, language experts suggest iso also helps to soften the harshness of isolation, which sounds colder and scarier. Conveniently, the abbreviation also enabled iso to become a prefix, as in iso-baking (banana bread, sourdough), isokilos (weight gained thanks to iso-baking), iso-cut (amateur haircut when salons shut) and iso-fashion (trackie daks). By 6 May, the hashtag #iso had already been used 2.4 million times on Instagram, spreading quicker than you know what. Reasons to be grateful this past week include returning to the cinema to see an Aussie film, Rams, and for opening night of the British Film Festival, evening drinks in Irene’s glorious garden, face-to-face yoga classes and meditation, and volunteers helping to Clean Up Lake Burley Griffin last Sunday. May you stay well, dear readers, and keep on looking out for one another.

A health screening and COVID-19 testing station was set up at Canberra Airport on Monday night, for travellers entering the ACT from South Australia. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
SA travellers being tested at Canberra Airport ACT Health is closely monitoring the COVID-19 cluster in South Australia, setting up a screening and testing station for flights arriving from the state into Canberra Airport. The station commenced operations on Monday night (16 November), with about 250 passengers arriving at Canberra Airport from Adelaide across two flights. On Tuesday (17 November), ACT Health Minister Rachel StephenSmith said five people were isolating
while awaiting their test results after arriving in the national capital overnight. Test results are currently taking up to 24 hours on average. “Around 250 people arrived yesterday evening and another 75 this morning. All of those people were met by Health Protections staff, to identify if they had any symptoms or if they had been in any places that were potentially a risk in terms of transmission of the coronavirus,” she said.
“Of the 250 who arrived last night, five were identified as having symptoms and had their swab tests taken at the airport … and were asked to self-isolate until those results came back. “This morning I am advised that of the 75 odd people who went through the screening at the airport, none of them were required to undergo a test for COVID-19.” As at Tuesday 17 November, there were 19 positive COVID-19 cases in South Australia. Another flight of about 40 passengers from Adelaide arrived in the Territory at 1.20pm on Tuesday, as part of the 19 flights operating from Adelaide to Canberra weekly. The ACT, NSW and Victoria were the only jurisdictions to keep their borders open with SA, with Ms Stephen-Smith stating the Territory would work closely with NSW on the decision. “It is really difficult for the ACT to impose a hard border if NSW does not do that. What we really don’t want is have people flying into Sydney … and driving into Canberra when we don’t know they are here,” she said.
“We would actually rather, if people are coming back into the ACT, that they are flying in and we know and can do that health screening for them.” Canberra residents are being urged to reconsider non-essential travel or monitor symptoms for 14 days following a visit to South Australia. Ms Stephen-Smith also confirmed the ACT would not be receiving a repatriation flight from overseas this week, following news last Friday that the ACT would receive 360 Australians on two international flights before Christmas. “We won’t have a flight coming in this week, we are working very closely with the Commonwealth on our arrangements for hotel quarantine,” she said. “What we are seeing out of SA is there is risks associated with hotel quarantine and absolutely minimising that is what we are endeavouring to do and we are not going to take a flight until we have crossed our t’s and dotted our i’s.” - Danielle Meddemmen
Equity and discrimination main concerns for ACT’s youth Young people in the ACT have identified equity and discrimination, COVID-19 and the environment as their top concerns in a survey this year. Mission Australia’s Youth Survey Report 2020 attracted 25,800 respondents nationally, with 1,230 ACT-based participants. Mission Australia’s ACT regional leader, Daniel Strickland, said one of the most interesting things to come out of the Territory’s results was the increased concern about equity and discrimination. “I think one of the surprising things was equity and discrimination moving from the third most concerning to the first,” he said. “During the time they were surveyed, there was a worldwide movement around racism and the Black Lives Matter movement so it’s 8

interesting to see the correlation in the community and worldwide that puts those issues at front of mind for young people.” In the ACT, 42.2% of respondents reported being concerned about equity and discrimination compared to 20.6% in 2019. A new category of concern, COVID-19, came in second with ACT participants, with almost four in 10 (37.7%) indicating it was Australia’s most important issue currently. Mr Strickland said 2020 had been exceptionally difficult for the younger demographic, with survey results also finding three in 10 of the ACT’s young people feeling stressed all or most of the time. “What a year it has been for young people, who have adapted to a great deal of change. Many are coping with new stresses in addition to existing
challenges,” he said. “Even with increased government investment this year, there are significant gaps in the mental health support system that have been accentuated by COVID-19.” The Youth Survey Report results are shared with governments, nongovernment organisations, schools and social commentators, which Mr Strickland said helps with advocacy work and policy change for young people. “It helps us with our research and advocacy and having the opportunity to have these conversations with the government,” he said. “We hope the work we have done, which is being sent out to policy makers and government, plays a big part in having a voice of the young people.” Mission Australia has put forward
its own recommendations as part of the report, including the development of a national anti-racism strategy and early intervention services for youth homelessness. “Additional funding and strategies are needed to improve the mental health and wellbeing of young people from the ACT,” Mr Strickland said. “This should include more ageappropriate prevention and early intervention mental health services that are designed in conjunction with young people, who have important input on the issues that affect them and the best solutions.” Reassuringly, the Youth Survey Report 2020 showed that the majority (60.9%) of young people from the ACT felt very happy/happy with their lives and more than half (57.2%) are very positive/positive about the future. - Danielle Meddemmen

Surge funding will provide jobs for 24 new staff to Transport Canberra and City Services’ (TCCS) lawn mowing teams through the Jobs for Canberrans fund. Photo: Denholm Samaras.
Rain induces ‘surge capacity’ mowing, pothole repairs Recent high rainfall across the Canberra region has forced the ACT Government to spend $6 million on ‘surge capacity’ staffing to handle a growing need for lawn mowing and road maintenance. The appearance of so much long grass around town belies the fact that

Canberra’s dedicated lawn mowers are most certainly on the job, some working 12-hour shifts seven days a week to get on top of the growth. Area supervisor for Inner South, Peter Sullivan, said his team has been “putting in a lot of effort” to quell the rapid grass growth across the ACT.
“Just as quick as we mow it the grass is growing up behind us,” he said. To date, the above average rainfall has left crews approximately one and a half weeks behind on their suburban mowing schedule. “Across Canberra there’s a lot of mowers operating every day …. In the past we’d just go over and cut the grass once and it’d look great. “Now, at times, we might have to go over it three times before the grass gets cut down. “It’s not as easy as you may think it is … this is the worst I’ve seen it this year.” Surge funding will provide jobs for 24 new staff to Transport Canberra and City Services’ (TCCS) lawn mowing teams through the Jobs for Canberrans fund. The funding will also go toward leasing additional mowing equipment and extend some of TCCS’s existing mowing contracts. “We’ve been working with the
ESA and ACT Parks to undertake an additional mow in some of the fire risk areas to make sure we’re dealing with the grass before it dries out and becomes a risk,” Minister for City Services Chris Steel said. Mr Steel said potholes have been opening on Canberra’s roads at triple the rate they usually do, which has necessitated the funding to get more contractors out on the roads. “We’ve fixed over 2,830 potholes over the last four months alone, that’s usually more than we deal with in one financial year,” he said. “The community has been reporting to the ACT Government potholes that have been opening up … We have been fixing around 120 potholes a day.” Heavy patching of potholes will be undertaken on the arterial and major feeder roads which will see preventative and water proofing maintenance done. - Denholm Samaras

news Man charged over fatal collision
Volunteers celebrate less rubbish
ACT Policing have charged a 33-year-old Ngunnawal man with culpable driving causing death and drug driving for the fatal collision that claimed the life of ACT Senior Australian of the Year, Sue Salthouse, on Commonwealth Avenue Bridge in July. At 2.40pm on Monday 20 July, Ms Salthouse was involved in a collision between a car and her wheelchair-accessible motorcycle and died later in hospital. ACT Policing said the driver assisted them with their inquiries from the beginning and was able to remain in the community while a “complex investigation” took place. “MVC (Motor vehicle crash) investigations take a while, it’s quite technical and needs a considerable amount of expertise
Volunteers found less rubbish than last year when they paddled and walked around the lake on Sunday 15 November for Clean-up Lake Burley Griffin Day 2020. Event coordinator, Tammy Ven Dange, said although there were fewer volunteers this year, they also saw less pollution. “We don’t know if this was because the event was held one month earlier than previous years, or if COVID had anything to do with it,” she said. “Regardless, it was great to hear from our site supervisors that there was noticeably less rubbish this year. Well done, Canberra!” In three hours, volunteers collected 61 bags of rubbish and many items that were too large for a bag. There were plenty of balls and frisbees at popular dog walking locations, the Burley Griffin Canoe Club, Black Mountain and Weston Park.
for physics,” a spokesperson said. “It’s really important we get that right.” ACT Policing said they had maintained contact with Ms Salthouse’s family throughout the investigation. Police said while the matter was before the courts and yet to be proven, their tests indicated meth amphetamine in the driver’s system. The investigation received assistance from people in the community and have gathered CTV footage from the area. ACT Policing said there had been six fatalities on the road this year and “every one of them is one too many”. “It causes pain.” The man will appear in court on 18 December.

Volunteers participated in the clean-up event on foot, dragon boat, kayak and rowing club tinnies.
Cigarette butts were a common sight all around the lake and food and drink packaging was once again the most common type of rubbish, with plastic sachets being particularly common around Lotus Bay. The East Basin had a lot of construction material and containers. Only one disposable face mask was picked up by volunteers and there were no e-scooters or bicycles visible underwater, however, a particularly high water level this year may have obscured heavy objects on the lakebed.

The ARIA-nominated educational song by local teacher CJ Shaw, has helped students understand what it means to be part of history and how they can have their voices heard.
ARIA-nominated music teacher brings stories to life for students To commemorate his ARIA Awards nomination, music teacher CJ Shaw and a small group of his primary school students visited the Australian War Memorial last week to sing a song with simple lyrics, full of meaning. Palmerston District Primary School’s Mr Shaw was nominated
for Telstra Music Teacher of the Year ahead of the ARIA Awards on 25 November in Sydney and, if he wins, it will be a first for the ACT. His song, ANZAC Biscuits, tells the story of a child living through World War II who bakes enough biscuits for everyone: to make sure Dad comes home, to make sure the
war ends, so Mum won’t be so quiet. The song resonated deeply with the children at Palmerston, and many have parents in the military. Mr Shaw said it started great conversations about the history of World War II and created a link for the children at school in Canberra to understand their place in the story of Australia’s military history. “What it means to be a part of it, and how they can have their voices heard.” He has been teaching for nine years and said watching his love of music rub off on the students was one of the joys of the job. “If they learn early that they can use [music] as an artform to express themselves or to understand an emotion, then I think that does excellent things for students of all ages, and people of all ages.” Both of Year 5 student Isobel Marlow’s parents were serving in the army and her mum was currently overseas.
“She got COVID-19 so I’ve been kind of worried about her. But she will be coming home early because of that which is nice. But I’m still worried about her.” Mr Shaw’s song encouraged her to bake some Anzac biscuits and send them over to her mum. “She’ll probably laugh a bit because she’s that kind of mum. Then she’ll eat them.” Palmerston District principal Kate Smith said Mr Shaw was “a real gem” and it was an easy decision to nominate him for the ARIA award. “You’ll now see children in our playground at lunchtime taking out ukuleles. He’s a living legend in our school,” she said. Mr Shaw received the Gold Coin of the Director of the Australian War Memorial “to honour the song, the man and the story behind it”. ACTRFS welcomes new recruits
True blue sounds of Australia What do a 1990s tune from Aussie rock band Silverchair, the first record to highlight the didgeridoo and Gough Whitlam’s election campaign jingle all have in common? They’ve just been announced among 10 new additions to the Sounds of Australia registry, a list of recorded sounds that have played a part in shaping Australian culture and history, maintained by the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA). A panel of industry experts selected the sounds from submissions from the public, and nominations are now open for 2021. NFSA curator Thorsten Kaeding said the project received hundreds of nominations each year. “Many of the sounds receive multiple nominations over many years before they are included on the Sounds of Australia registry,” he said.
The full list, in chronological order: • Starlight by Hamilton Hill - 1907 • Etude de concert in F minor and Etude de concert in A flat major by Eileen Joyce - 1933 • Olympic Games, Melbourne 1956: Official souvenir recording of Opening Ceremony and Closing Ceremony - 1956 • Nausicaa: Opera in Three Acts by Peggy Glanville-Hicks - 1961 • Arnhem Land Popular Classics: Aboriginal Dance Songs with Didjeridu Accompaniment by David Blanasi, Djoli Laiwanga and others - 1963 • Because I Love You by The Master’s Apprentices - 1971 • Whitlam’s jingle, It’s Time by Alison MacCallum - 1972 • True Blue by John Williamson - 1986 • Tomorrow by Silverchair - 1994 • Martin/Molloy by Tony Martin and Mick Molloy - 1995-1998

The ACT Rural Fire Service (ACTRFS) has welcomed 48 new recruits ahead of summer and in preparation for the current 2020-21 bushfire season. The newest recruits have joined the ACTRFS after there was record community interest in joining the service in 2020 after a summer of horror bushfires. ACT Emergency Services Agency (ESA) Commissioner Georgeina Whelan said last fire season was one of the busiest on record for the ACT and NSW. “In total, we have increased our rural firefighters by 58 in 2020,” she said. Commissioner Whelan said recruitment for the ACTRFS would re-open for interested parties in 2021.
PKUP is back Canberra’s own personal driver service, PKUP, has used its COVID-related pause in operations to scale up its driver recruitment, develop a new app and deliver a COVID-safe plan. And now it’s back and ready to help you re-discover your social life. Established in December 2016 by brothers Joshua and Oscar Gonzalez, who went on to be named the 2019 Young Canberra Citizens of the Year, PKUP is all about getting you home safely. Rather than traditional rideshare services, PKUP drivers work in teams of two to pick up you and/or your car and
drop you both home again when you’re ready. PKUP CEO Joshua Gonzalez said after months of waiting, they’re back. “With the further easing of restrictions across the ACT and the weather warming up, this comes at the perfect time to see us start enjoying our social lives again,” he said. “We’re pleased to be able to get Canberrans moving again and help rebuild the Canberra economy.” PKUP is providing customers with a $15 discount off their first pick-up when using the new PKUP app.

Liquid Instruments’ Moku:Lab product replaces 12 instruments in a lab with one single multifunctional device. The spin-out from the Australian National University (ANU) has a unique approach that combines precision hardware with the versatility of software. It delivers solutions for professional scientists, engineers and students working in research and industrial labs across industries such as telecommunications, aerospace, defence and electronics manufacturing. Moku:Lab provides the same functionality as tens of thousands

The company was established in 2014 following decades of investment by the ANU and other funding agencies into developing the technology necessary to detect and measure minute gravitational waves. CEO Professor Daniel Shaddock and a team of 11 ANU students and postdoctoral experimental physicists and engineers founded Liquid Instruments after developing technology for a new form of astronomy and for the Grace FollowOn project. Finding his feet: Canberra’s newest giraffe calf Big sister Nzuri was caught off guard by the arrival of her clumsy baby brother, the first male giraffe calf born at Canberra’s National Zoo and Aquarium. Nzuri was born last year and hoofstock supervisor Sophie Dentrinos said she took a few days to get used to the idea of having a younger sibling. “She was quite petrified of him when he arrived, she was spooked by this thing that suddenly appeared!” she said. “Now they’re really good playmates.” Within an hour of birth, the yet-to-be-named addition to the family of giraffes was up on his feet, which have distinctive dark markings, while Ms Dentrinos happily watched the whole thing on CCTV. “They have to get up really quickly to keep moving with mum, and to reach her milk as well. important they get that first suckle really quickly,” she said. “We pretty much leave them to their own devices as much as we can.” Staff observed the healthy young male was growing an incredible 2.5cm per day. “One day he was walking under a fence, the next day he was hitting the fence, so I was like ‘Wow! You’ve grown quite a lot overnight’,” Ms Dentrinos said. Zookeepers cleared the enclosure of as many obstacles as possible while the new calf learned to walk and run, however, he still managed to get up to mischief. “He was really cheeky and inquisitive right from the beginning. “He was giving us a few grey hairs straight away, he was walking into things and tripping

over things because he wanted to explore his environment. “It’s quite a skill to work out those legs!” His experienced parents have resided together at the zoo for six years since being genetically matched as part of a regional breeding program and Ms Dentrinos said they were very successful right from the beginning. She said it was more important than ever that giraffes in captivity boosted an “insurance population,” given their numbers in the wild have declined by more than 30% in the past three decades. The calf’s name will be announced on Monday 23 November and staff have proposed six options: Shavu, Huru, Amanzi, Kahmisi, Usiko or Soksi. - Rosa Ritchie

Share the Dignity: It’s in the Bag Share the Dignity, a charity helping women and girls in need, are asking for help to make this Christmas special for women in our communities experiencing homelessness, fleeing domestic violence or living in poverty. The charity is hosting their annual It’s in the Bag campaign and would love the community to donate a bag and drop off at collection boxes at Bunnings stores between Friday 20 November and Sunday 29 November. In 2019, Share the Dignity collected over 127,000 bags at Bunnings stores nationally. Share the Dignity works with over 2,600 charities and this year the requests for help are sitting at over 100,000 to date. The It’s in the Bag campaign has a simple premise and is easy to take part in: Donate a handbag in good, used condition that you no longer use or a new one; Fill it with items that will make a difference to the daily life of a woman or girl in need; Include

the essentials such as period products, roll-on deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo and conditioner and soap; Add little luxuries such as a new lipstick, a hairbrush, hair ties, a gift card or a notebook and pen; Add a finishing touch to the bag such as a thoughtful note or Christmas card that shows someone cares. Once bags are complete, they can be dropped off to the collection box at your local Bunnings between 20-29 November. Share the Dignity volunteers will then collect the bags and distribute these to registered charities ensuring that these wonderful gifts are received in time for Christmas. 2020 has been a difficult year for many Australians due to the impacts of COVID-19. The issues of poverty and homelessness are significant here in Australia. Interested in donating a bag and taking part? Visit Share the Dignity’s website for more information: sharethedignity.org.au

Recipe from Confidence in the Kitchen by Emmylou MacCarthy, Published by Plum, RRP $39.99, Photography by Mark Roper.
Preheat the oven to 160°C. (If you have an older oven and you know it doesn’t have much oomph, then go to 170°C.) To make the spice rub, mix all the ingredients in a small bowl. Place the lamb in a colander to drain. If there is any moisture on the top, pat it dry with paper towel. Make a bed for the lamb in a roasting tin by covering it with a layer of carrot and celery, then sprinkle over some rosemary. Sit the tin on a tea towel to prevent it from slipping around while you’re working on the lamb.
Summer entertaining
This week, food writer Libby Kimber shares a divine recipe for slow cooked lamb that will make entertaining friends and family this summer a breeze.
Slow roasted lamb shoulder Serves 4–6 1 lamb shoulder (about 2 kg), bone in
1 Tbsp ground coriander
2 carrots, quartered
1 Tbsp freshly ground black pepper
4 celery stalks, halved crossways
2 tsp sweet paprika
Big bunch of rosemary (stalks and all), plus extra to serve
Pickled red onion
6 small garlic cloves, peeled
1 tsp caster sugar
1 heaped Tbsp honey
1 tsp salt
2 Tbsp olive oil Sea salt
370ml light-tasting vinegar (rice, white wine and apple cider vinegar all work well)
Spice rub
A handful of dill sprigs
1 Tbsp ground cumin
2 tsp black peppercorns
2 red onions, halved and thinly sliced
Use a small sharp knife to make six evenly spaced 1–2cm incisions in the lamb. Push a garlic clove and some sprigs of fresh rosemary into each incision. Drizzle the honey and olive oil over the top, then use your hands to smear it all over the lamb (it’s a bit of a cross between dabbing and smearing as the honey kind of comes away from the lamb). Give your hands a wash, then sprinkle the spice rub over the top. Pour 2 tablespoons of water into the bottom of the tin and triple foil that sucker! By that, I mean place one layer of foil over the tin and seal tightly around the edges, then repeat two more times. Whack it in the oven for 4 hours. Meanwhile, make the pickled red onion. Fill your kettle and put it on to boil, then place the onion in a colander in the sink. Pour the boiling water over the onion to soften it. Combine the sugar, salt and vinegar in a small saucepan and stir over very low heat for a few minutes until the sugar and salt have dissolved. Set aside to cool. Tear a couple of dill sprigs and add them to the cooled liquid. Transfer the onion to a jar and pour the liquid over the top. Top with the peppercorns and a little more dill, put the lid on and leave to pickle for at least 30 minutes or up to 2 hours. After 4 hours, take the lamb out of the oven, peel away one edge of the foil and look to see if the meat has shrunk away from the bone. Then check that the meat is nice and tender by pulling at it with a fork – it should fall apart without any effort. Replace the foil and let the lamb rest for 20 minutes. Just before you’re ready to serve, turn your oven up to 220°C, take off the foil and sprinkle some salt over the lamb. Put it back in the oven for 10–15 minutes to brown it all up. Serve with the pickled red onion. Yum!

Artistic Advisor Jessica Cottis is taking the reins from outgoing Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Nicholas Milton, who wraps up a highly successful 15-year tenure.
cover story An internationally accomplished Soprana with local roots, having lived and studied in Canberra for almost 10 years, Lorina Gore will be the CSO’s 2021 Artist in Focus. Photo: Sam Tildsley.
CSO looks to new beginnings while seeing out 2020 in style Late last month, the Canberra Symphony Orchestra (CSO) announced a dynamic 2021 program thematically focused on taking “audiences on a journey to the heart of the human condition”. The theme comes as they enter a transitional phase with incoming Artistic Advisor Jessica Cottis taking the reins from outgoing Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Nicholas Milton, who wraps up a highly successful 15-year tenure. The Orchestra will also make their mainstage return later this month to close out their heavily disrupted 2020 season on a positive note. An internationally accomplished Soprana with local roots, having lived and studied in Canberra for almost 10 years, Lorina Gore will be the CSO’s 2021 Artist in Focus. “I’m so thrilled to have this wonderful opportunity to work again with an orchestra I sang with many times when I was studying and living in Canberra,” she said. Having performed “quite a lot” with the CSO previously while living here, Gore said she’s long appreciated the “continued support of many Canberrans” throughout her career. “Canberra was an incredibly supportive place to study and learn,” she said.
“People in Canberra really do seem to have such an appreciation and love of music, so I always had somewhere interesting to perform. “To be able to sing in Canberra again for all of these wonderful people is a really special privilege.” Her role as 2021 CSO Artist in Focus will see Gore perform at four concerts with the Orchestra, all of which she is “incredibly excited” for. Her first performance will be in March for Llewellyn One when she will perform Weil’s Seven Deadly Sins with Cottis conducting. “Kurt Weill’s Seven Deadly Sins is such a fantastic work, and it’s so rarely performed in Australia,” she said. Then an intimate recital in Gandel Hall at the National Gallery of Australia in June will see her team up with renowned pianist Alan Hicks. “The recital will be wonderful as it’s a more personal way to connect with an audience, to share my love of art songs, and to sing some of the pieces that you can really relish in when you have a more intimate performing space,” Gore said. In July, Gore will play an Australian Series concert curated by Professor Deborah Cheetham AO at the National Museum of Australia. “It’s also really special to be involved in
creating brand new music with the Australian Series – a world premiere of a new work is always an exciting occasion!” Rounding out her CSO involvement for 2021, Gore will perform one of her “all-time favourite works to sing”, Mahler’s 4th Symphony at Llewellyn Three in September. “Mahler’s 4th Symphony is just one of the most charming and touching orchestral works to listen to; I absolutely adore singing it,” she said. Prior to their eagerly awaited 2021 season, the CSO are now back before audiences and shaping up to close their heavily disrupted 2020 season in style. Following their Spring Sojourn at Wesley Music Centre over the weekend, the Orchestra will make their mainstage return later this month following a COVID-imposed hiatus since March. Live at Llewellyn on 25 and 26 November will see a reduced-size CSO return to the Llewellyn Hall mainstage, conducted by Simon Hewett and featuring guest cellist Julian Smiles. Based in Sydney but Canberra raised, Smiles told Canberra Weekly he’s eager to return to Lllewellyn Hall. “It’s a terrific venue, I actually sang at the opening of it when I was about six in the Canberra Children’s Choir for a performance that opened the hall. I’ve been performing there since it opened,” he said. Alongside the Orchestra, it will be the biggest crowd for which Smiles has performed since March, too. “It’ll be very special for everyone, I get the impression many, many audience members have been missing the opportunity,” he said. “I think there will be a great sense of occasion to it and relief and joy to be able to perform live music the way it should be.” - Denholm Samaras

Book talk Jeff Popple reviews three books about families, adventurers and that ‘Reacher Guy’. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Before the Storm by Di Morrissey Macmillan, $34.99
Di Morrissey is one of Australia’s most successful authors and her popular novels have sold over three million copies. Her locational based dramas have found a very appreciative audience that continues to grow with each book. Her latest, Before the Storm, is set on the beautifully described Victorian coastline and is an engaging novel about families, old secrets and a destructive development proposal. It starts a little slowly, but once underway the tension mounts as the storm of the title approaches. The characters of the seaside town of Storm Harbour are lovingly sketched and Morrissey smoothly draws the reader into her story. A good family drama.

OUT OF THIS WORLD
Australia in the space age
Jim Haynes is an engaging storyteller, and his latest book is an entertaining romp through the quirky backwaters of Australian history. Just in time for Christmas, Haynes has gathered an enjoyable collection of true-life tales about some of our oddest characters. From swimmer Annette Kellerman, who progressed from exhibitions in a large fish tank in Melbourne to performing on the American vaudeville circuit and starring in the purportedly first million dollar silent movie; to the ground-breaking female politician Edith Cowan whose father was hanged for murder; to Aussie Rules pioneer Tom Willis who stabbed himself to death with a pair of scissors. Fascinating reading.

An enlightening glimpse into the world of bestselling fiction writing. Highly recommended.

Now showing Freaky (MA15+) A group of teenagers partying in a manor are quickly disposed of by a serial killer known as the Blissfield Butcher (Vince Vaughn). Making off with a mystical dagger, the killer soon hunts down the quiet and oftenbullied high school student Millie Kessler (Kathryn Newton). Using the dagger to stab Millie, the two shockingly swap bodies! Inspired by Mary Rodgers’ Freaky Friday, the movie uses the body-swap trope to allow a serial killer and ‘last girl’ to empathise with each other: Millie feels more confident and stronger in the Butcher’s body, while the Butcher feels Millie’s vulnerability and anxiety, simultaneously using her demure, unassuming persona to go about his business unnoticed and unencumbered. Set around Friday the 13th, Freaky has fun referencing the slasher genre

in both Easter eggs and use of tropes: 1980s slasher fans will be pleased with the inventive kills and gore! Like Heathers, there is a sick wish-fulfilment element in the way the Butcher, in the body of the mild Millie, gets even with her high school tormentors! Freaky stands out in its use of the slasher genre to explore issues of gender and sexuality. Whilst in the gruesome form of the Butcher, Millie still finds the opportunity to connect with her crush purely on personality alone. Via the body swap experience, Millie is unavoidably set on the path of getting some hard-earned self-confidence. Verdict: A surprisingly strong and enjoyable horror comedy which celebrates its horror/ slasher tropes while still delivering laughs. 3.5 stars. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net
Beings explores connection to animals and nature Open as of today, a new collaborative exhibition at Fyshwick’s Humble House Gallery, titled Beings, explores human-animal relation in Australia through ceramics, oil paintings and mixed media. Artist Deborah Van Heerkeren told Canberra Weekly the exhibition came about when she and long-time friend and work colleague AnnaKarina Hermkens talked about translating between their respective artistic mediums. Van Heerkeren works in visual arts, primarily oil paintings, while Hermkens is a ceramicist. “When you’re working in ceramics and limited to a single image, that interplay really comes across … You get something very focused, pared down and fundamental,” Van Heerkeren said. The works that comprise the exhibition depict beings born of the interconnection between humans,
animals and the earth – which was informed by both Van Heerkeren and Hermkens’ academic backgrounds in the field of anthropology. They approached their works with an awareness of how other cultures relate to their world differently, where the interconnections between beings are “very strongly articulated”. “Having that experience, you start to reflect on your own life world; for me it gave me a better understanding of the drought we were experiencing a couple of years ago,” she said. “You understand that, sure, the land is degraded, that farmers are suffering, animals are suffering, but this is all part of a totality … All of these things are in relationship.” Beings by Deborah Van Heerkeren and Anna Karina Hermkens is on display at Humble House Gallery, Fyshwick until 6 December; humblehouse.com.au

wellbeing
Start now for a better 2021 From a COVID-19 perspective, Canberrans must consider ourselves very blessed compared to other communities around the world in 2020. Nevertheless, between the bushfires and associated smoke haze that started the year, the damaging hailstorm and then the massive disruption of coronavirus, it feels like collectively we’ll all be mightily relieved when this year is finally over. If you’re looking forward to a break over Christmas and the silly season, it’s worth taking a moment to consider your current state of wellbeing and how you can avoid simply limping over the finishing line and collapsing in a heap come the holidays.
WITH WESLEY SMITH DIRECTOR, LIVE WELL SPA & WELLNESS CENTRE MANUKA livewellnaturally.com.au meditatewithwes.com
Similarly, rather than waiting until January to make a last-ditch attempt at course correction via a New Year’s resolution, why not pick one thing you can do now that means you’ll end the year with a bit of wind in your sails.
i.e. no TV, no gaming, no devices, or it could be to spend some part of the weekend in nature.
Keep it simple
Measure and monitor
When it comes to wellbeing, I’m a big believer that most of us are aware of some simple changes we could implement that would make a difference to the way we feel. These are the low hanging fruit that you might have been ignoring. Unfortunately, the more out-of-sorts we feel, the more inertia we face and the less inclined we are to practise good self-care. With that in mind, I suggest focusing on making just one simple and achievable change between now and the end of the year. The way to boost your wellbeing will be as unique as you are. It may be to drink more water, to walk for 30 minutes every day, to reduce your coffee intake by one cup a day, to have one more alcohol-free night a week, to get to sleep 30 minutes earlier or to wake up 30 minutes earlier and stretch. It might be to have one night a week of digital detox,
The other key to success is to make it easy and measurable. If keeping better hydrated is the goal, then place your water bottle on your desk so that you can see at a glance whether you are completing the task. If you’re going for a walk in the mornings, get your runners out the night before. If you’re planning a digital detox night, make sure you’ve got a good book. If you’re reducing coffee, get some lovely herbal tea you can have instead. Whatever you do, make sure you schedule it. Put reminders in your phone and laptop, create a spreadsheet or a little chart with coloured paper and stickers like you used to have when you were a kid. It may also help to share your goal with a friend, colleague or partner so you can both support each other to stay on track. The time to start feeling better is now; you’ll thank me come the holidays!

The Discovery Kitchen Garden at National Arboretum Canberra contains a diversity of plants including vegetables, herbs, flowers and companion plants.
More than you imagine at National Arboretum Canberra The Discovery Kitchen Garden at the Australian National Arboretum consists of a large, raised bed approximately 6m long and 1.5m wide. It has a canopy of decorative steel umbrellas, which are as functional as they are aesthetic. Ange, a Friend of the National Arboretum Canberra, has been managing and maintaining the garden with a small team of volunteers since October 2016. The garden is funded by Friends of NAC and also the NAC. Produce, seeds and other goodies from the garden are available at their seasonal market stalls, with proceeds going to Friends. The bed has a diversity of plants including vegetables, herbs, flowers and companion plants, many of which are left to produce seed. Two must-haves currently growing are scarlet runner beans and Poppy ‘Ladybird’ (Papaver commutatum ‘Ladybird’). Poppy ‘Ladybird’ is an autumn and spring flowering annual with deep red petals with distinct black dots. It is in its element when planted en masse. Scarlet runner beans are a perennial legume to 2m with showy, scarlet-coloured flowers followed by tasty beans. They are herbaceous in cooler climates. This cottage-style garden creates interest yearround, as well as all but eliminates pests – Ange said the main pests they have to watch for are snails and slugs, which are removed by hand. There are also handmade female moth cut-outs throughout the bed to deter Cabbage White Butterfly. Ange says the garden is the perfect place to come and see what’s in season and what to plant. Volunteers, who maintain the garden every other day, are happy to answer any of those niggling gardening questions. Children also love to explore the garden, looking for bugs and pollinators amongst the flowers. The garden is watered by hand, which is the perfect opportunity to see what needs doing and
enjoy some Zen time amongst the flowers. Soil is topped up twice yearly with imported organic matter and compost made on site. Plants are fertilised with Seasol PowerFeed when they are actively growing. The Discovery Kitchen Garden is holding its next market stall on Saturday 21 November 10am-2pm. Card only, no cash. The Arboretum also runs free guided tours of The Discovery Garden. For more: nationalarboretum.act.gov.au
In the garden this week: tips and tricks for spring planting • Spring planting season is well under way and before long, the heat of summer will significantly slow growth and our gardens will enter survival mode. Get in and plant the last of your summer veggie seedlings soon while the weather is favourable. • Wherever practical, leave old veggie crops to flower and seed as a food source for beneficial insects, bees, and other wildlife. Leaving last season’s crops in the ground for longer also provides protection for new seedlings and the soil as well as preventing opportunistic weeds. • Plant productive crops in more than one location and stagger planting times, to extend the growing season and prevent losing entire crops to seasonal mishaps and bug infestations. • Keep an eye out for snails, slugs, and slaters, especially after rain or watering. Use certified organic snail pellets, if any, as wildlife such as lizards and birds love eating these pests. • Protect strawberry crops from bugs, slugs, birds, and pets. Using purpose-made strawberry pots is a great option on a smaller scale as they keep the fruit well ventilated and off the ground. Put exclusion bags around bunches of fruit as

they begin to ripen. In garden beds, try draping fruit over old soft drink bottles to get them off the ground and make it difficult for bugs and slugs to reach them. • Pinch out lateral shoots on tomato plants as they form, which are located just below flower sets. Check soil pH is between 6.5 and 7.5 and remedy if needed using products such as dolomite and gypsum. Maintain constant soil moisture to promote healthy fruit development and prevent blossom end rot. • Watch for fungal diseases, bugs and other plant anomalies. Symptoms such as wilting, curled, or discoloured foliage; sawdust at branch junctions; sap exuding from branches/trunks and pruning cuts; or armies of ants on foliage and stems can indicate that all is not well in plant land. Observation and cultural control methods are the most effective and sustainable. • Apply a combination of slow and fast acting organic fertilisers to most plants, including those in pots. Fertiliser teas and compost brews using ingredients such as comfrey, borage, worm castings, seaweed and fish extracts, supply the nutrient plants need in their more natural forms, meaning more resilient and productive crops.
Leaving spent crops to go to flower is an excellent food source for bees, beneficials and other wildlife.

A grand family home Amaroo 6 Styx Close On one of Amaroo’s largest blocks, 6 Styx Close is home to just over 1,400sqm of land, a grand fourbedroom residence and a pristine tennis court. In a quiet cul-de-sac , the home is just minutes to the reserve, walking trails and the tranquil Yerrabi Pond. “The house itself is generous in its proportions, with multiple living areas, and four or five bedrooms given the flexible layout,” says
Upside Realty ACT registered agent, Catherine Halloran. “It has beautifully landscaped grounds. “Premium properties are sold along this belt, with the Amaroo foundation stone a few metres down the walking trail behind the house,” she says. “The tennis court area is ideal for a future pool, or granny flat, or leave as is for tennis, soccer,
basketball – a great play area for the kids which is completely enclosed.” Halloran says the house is the ideal space for large or extended families, with a number of living areas and spacious bedrooms. “Amaroo is a sought after suburb as a feeder for premium schools in the area, including Amaroo School which has several specialised programs including a Gifted and Talented program, as well as Burgmann and John Paul II College.” The home is perfect for entertaining both inside out, with large family and rumpus rooms, separate dining and a modern kitchen. The open-plan family living area leads out to a covered alfresco entertaining space with built in barbecue and surrounded by landscaped gardens.
“The current owners have bought interstate and have been truly active in the Canberra community,” Halloran says, “one being a co-coach of the Canberra Giants netball team – I understand the team has trained on the tennis court from time to time! – and the other having created Mathletics, a specialist education program used by most Canberra public schools”.

Weekly market wrap As demand increases, buyers pay the price for delayed decisions
Photo Kerrie Brewer
During October, Canberra experienced an 8.4% increase in the number of new listings. This is consistent with the spring selling season which typically sees listing activity increase. Interestingly, whilst there was an increase in the number of listings advertised for under 60 days, there was a drop in the number of listings advertised for more than 60 days. This indicates robust buyer demand is making an impact, reducing days on market. Even though there was a spike in listing activity during October, yearly listing activity remains down 8%. Preliminary auction clearance rates illustrate how quickly market conditions are accelerating. On Saturday 14 November, Domain reported Canberra achieved 91% preliminary auction clearance rate, up 22% on the same time last year. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, ACT residents have the highest ordinary weekly earnings nationally. Each time the Reserve Bank of Australia acted
40
canberraweekly.com.au
to drive down borrowing costs, it enabled borrowers to access higher levels of credit without increasing their repayments, therefore maintaining affordability. The benefits of lower interest rates are exponentially greater when residents have higher incomes. This is all prior to accounting for confidence of maintaining employment indicated by the unemployment rate snapping back to 3.9% and potentially higher levels of household savings due to restrictions around travel. These conditions are fantastic for those who own property but can be frustrating for people wanting to buy. Those who put off buying earlier this year are noticing property values are increasing at a pace difficult to keep up with, resulting in compromise to enter the market. Acting decisively in April would have secured a three-bedroom townhouse, however, they are now finding for the same money only two bedrooms. It is an unfortunate illustration of why the best time to make a buying decision is as soon you can afford to.
WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST
Canberra market defies expectations, values forecast to increase 2020 has seen property forecasters have a horrible year, especially in their assessments of Canberra. Our property market defied their expectations and has seen across the board adjustments of 2021 forecasts in anticipation of values increasing. ANZ have forecast 8% growth which would see nominal improvement in market conditions which delivered 1.9% growth during the three months to October reported by CoreLogic. To put this in perspective, CoreLogic reported the median property value in Canberra for October as $656,739. Should the market forecast by ANZ be realised, Canberra’s median property value would increase by over $50,000 during 2021 or by far more than most people could save over the same period. Off-plan property provides those who aren’t ready to settle straight away the ability to secure the purchase price now and wait for construction to complete prior to settling. Stamp duty concessions, discounts and the $25,000 HomeBuilder Grant provide plenty of incentive to consider this part of the market. Regardless of your purchasing criteria, it is evident delaying decisions will likely result in paying more for the same type of property later.

High atop the hill in Hughes Hughes 14 Downes Place Set high on the hill in Hughes, this six-bedroom home on Downes Place has space in spades. The two-storey home boasts four bedrooms on the upper level, along with the kitchen and living spaces, while downstairs is home to two more bedrooms and a large rumpus. Cream Residential principal Chris Wilson says the home’s elevated location makes for “stunning views across Woden Valley and towards the Brindabella Ranges”. He says it’s the ideal abode for a “family looking for a larger home
with good bedroom separation and a rumpus room where kids can entertain themselves”. “The home has ducted gas heating, ducted evaporative cooling, beautiful gardens, plenty of car accommodation,” he says. “It really is a signature location.” The home boasts polished timber floors on the upper level, with views to the hills from the formal lounge and dining room and a modern kitchen with a lush garden outlook. As well as the perfectly manicured gardens, there is an

Wilson says the “stunning views” and “high elevation” make this house so unique, as well as its location close to Red Hill Reserve, the Federal Golf Club and the other beautiful, high quality homes in the area.

celebrity birthday DACRE MONTGOMERY 22 November 1994 The Moon is emotional and receptive and controls Dacre’s destiny during the year ahead. If he can use the positive energies of the Moon, it will be a great time in which to realign and improve his relationships, particularly with family members. Making a commitment to becoming a better person will dominate his thinking. If he fails to keep control of his emotional life, he will later regret some of his actions. Dacre must be certain not to let his heart rule his head.

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN
With both Mercury and Mars now going direct, your interests in all things esoteric including astrology and the Tarot is increasing. Trust your intuition as it is leading you in the right direction. Artistic and creative talents are highlighted, and this is a good time to start such projects.
As well as promoting your interest in groups, the Sun trine Neptune transit is good for socialising in general and for partnerships. Existing relationships will enjoy more spiritual closeness and bonding. If you are single, the next few weeks should bring a stunning new attraction into your life.
The Sun trine Neptune transit (until 21 November) increases your sensitivity to your environment and your empathy for others. This is also an ideal time to create a plan for your long-term economic needs and future security. Sensible monetary decisions made now will pay off in a big way.
Your social life will increase in
With both Mercury and Mars moving direct from the 15th, if things have been difficult with a loved one, colleague or business partner, you will have the opportunity of putting everything back into its proper place. This is a good time to learn more about religion or other spiritual beliefs.
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG Your path to success can be helped by a strong sense of self-belief and psychic impressions. This is a good time to chat to your partner or household about budgeting and spending. You will find that their views are roughly the same as yours.
Your relationships with loved ones will need extra tolerance this month, so be prepared to talk over any differences that have developed recently or over time. This is the ideal time to sort out any misunderstandings or to take on responsibility for older family members.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC
If you’ve been feeling off colour, the planets will help restore you to full health once again. You gain a deeper and wider understanding of your place in the world. Importantly, you may realise that achieving your goals and dreams is imperative before you can be of help to others.
As restrictions continue to ease, short journeys are well starred this month. If roadblocks or challenges arise at work or in your career, you might struggle to find an immediate way out of your problems. Rest assured, one is bound to appear sooner or later.
At work at the moment you are best to focus on doing things behind the scenes. This could also be an ideal time to contemplate voluntary early retirement or retraining. Be cautious of gossiping or backbiting as these actions could rebound on you later when you least expect it.

importance over the next month and you will be a popular and much sought-after person. You may have an urge to help others in need or join community or welfare groups and organisations such as the Red Cross or Greenpeace.
AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB When it comes to long-term career plans or financial goals, parental and authority figures seem keen to help you all they can. If you need to take on staff to help you with any kind of job, someone will know just the right person for you to employ.
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR The Sun trine Neptune transit helps you set goals to manifest your hopes for the future. You’re able to stay true to your spiritual ideals without sacrificing your own needs or level of comfort. Your ego benefits from a more spiritual outlook, enabling you to work hard on achieving success.

My great grandfather was the manager at the time and features frequently in the writing (and is pictured in this photo) as well as my husband’s relatives in a nearby valley.
BUILDING
Photo Sarah Lebner
These stables were made by my father, from completely salvaged building materials (each from a project with a story of their own).
