thursday 26 november 2020

This week... November 2020 has been a month of ‘firsts’ for me since COVID conspired to shut things down back in March. I’ve attended my first socially-distanced COVID-compliant: night of live theatre at Canberra Theatre; art exhibition opening at Kambri; film festival launch at Palace; and general film screenings at local cinemas. And it’s been good. Really good. It's all possible because Canberra has been fortunate to avoid the severe outbreaks and lockdowns experienced elsewhere largely due to following health directions and looking out for one another (and ourselves). Government supports, such as JobKeeper, have helped local businesses adversely impacted by government restrictions to stay afloat, and now the new ChooseCBR initiative is offering people discounts to shop in the ACT. Check out the story on page 14 and our Black Friday feature (pages 33-51) for more local deals. Reasons to be grateful this past week include peals of laughter while Reliving the Dream with HG Nelson (aka Greig Pickhaver) at Tallagandra Hill Winery on Sunday afternoon, an intimate (yet COVID compliant) launch of Here I Am: Art by Great Women festival and exhibition at Ambush Gallery at Kambri, ANU, meeting new people at a delightful dinner party in Curtin, sharing a delicious grazing box by The Merchants Feast with the CW team, morning walks, evening yoga and celebrating a new teenager’s birthday with the family. - Julie Samaras

news Repatriated Aussies to quarantine in ACT hotels Their ordeal is almost over; 360 Australians will be repatriated in Canberra before Christmas, and the first 150 passengers return this week on a governmentfacilitated flight from Singapore today, Thursday 26 November. However, two weeks of hotel quarantine await them before they can be reunited with loved ones they have not seen for months. As soon as they disembark, ACT Health officials will screen the arrivals for COVID-19 and other health risks. ACT Policing and Australian Defence Force personnel will also be on hand to ensure all goes smoothly. The passengers will then be quarantined in hotels for a fortnight, and tested again on day 10 to 12 of their confinement. ACT Policing COVID-19 Taskforce’s Detective

Superintendent Matthew Heather said Canberra had a strong record of compliance for hotel and home quarantine. “The priority over the next few weeks will be the safety of Canberra’s residents, and the care of Australians returning home via Canberra,” Detective Superintendent Heather said. Although Victoria’s second wave of coronavirus has been blamed on failures in hotel quarantine, authorities reassured the public that there was little risk. “The ACT and Commonwealth governments have worked collaboratively to put in place processes and arrangements for the safe quarantine of international arrivals to the ACT,” an ACT Health spokesperson said. “Following the National Review into Hotel Quarantine

and learning from other state and territories, ACT Health has put in place further measures to protect the ACT community.” These measures include ongoing surveillance of symptoms, while hotel staff and government employees in contact with returned travellers will be regularly tested for COVID-19. The ACT Health wellbeing team – including social workers and psychologists – will support those in quarantine. As at Tuesday 24 November, there was only one active COVID-19 case in the ACT, and no new cases had been recorded. ACT Policing has conducted 949 COVID-19 quarantine checks in the past week, bringing the total number to more than 19,200 during Canberra’s COVID-19 response, a spokesperson said.

As of Monday, the Singaporean Ministry of Health confirmed that there were no new cases of locally transmitted COVID-19 infection in the island city-state. Five people had entered the country with the virus; they were isolated upon arrival. The ACT Government has a dedicated COVID-19 website for all information about the health and economic response to the pandemic in the ACT. For further information, visit www.covid19.act.gov.au. The ACT Government also has a helpline to assist Canberrans through the challenges of COVID-19. The COVID-19 Helpline is 6207 7244, available between 8am and 8pm daily. Is the ACT Greens’ vision of a network of pokie-free clubs feasible?

Belconnen Bowling Club has shed nearly 50% of its poker machines in the past three years. Image: Kerrie Brewer.

Having secured gaming within his new portfolio, Minister Shane Rattenbury said he wanted to ensure clubs in the ACT continued to support the community, while simultaneously introducing and strictly enforcing measures 12

canberraweekly.com.au

to further reduce harm from gambling. Under the new parliamentary agreement between Greens and Labor, the number of poker machine licences will be cut further and a staged roll-out

of harm reduction measures, involving $5 bet limits and $100 load-up limits, will commence by the end of 2022 “at the latest”. Mr Rattenbury assured stakeholders that gambling reform measures would be supported by incentives for clubs, and extra incentives for venues that move to zero machines. But Canberra Community Clubs president Athol Chalmers said most clubs were unlikely to remove poker machines entirely, raising doubts about the possible size of the “network of pokie-free clubs” the ACT Greens described as part of their 2020 election platform. “Most clubs want to retain poker machines; the issue is how many to keep,” Mr Chalmers said. ClubsACT CEO Gwyn Rees said it was important the government continued to consult with the club sector to minimise “injurious financial impacts”.

Of the 49 ACT clubs, hotels and taverns offering gambling poker machines on-site in October 2017, just three venues have since gone pokie-free, according to data from the ACT Gambling and Racing Commission. And those venues - The National Press Club of Canberra, Mercure Canberra and the Statesman Hotel Motel - all previously held 10 or fewer machines. Nine venues retain the same number of machines they held in October 2017, 18 venues reduced the number of poker machines in action by between 2% and 25%, and 10 venues shed between 30% to 50% of their machines. Two venues increased pokies capacity and three closed permanently. - Rosa Ritchie Read a longer version of this article at canberraweekly.com.au

news Canberra to Melbourne route takes off as borders reopen Canberra Airport is a big winner in the ACT border reopening to Victoria without the need to quarantine, as return flights between Canberra and Melbourne increase by over 300%. The first flight of passengers arrived from Melbourne just after 9am on Monday 23 November, with no need for a quarantine period for the first time since 8 July. Canberra Airport head of aviation Michael Thomson said he was pleased to see the borders reopen to Melbourne, which was one of the most popular destinations from Canberra Airport. “From today our flight numbers to and from Melbourne increase from eight flights per week to 37 per week,” he said. “Melbourne has historically been our biggest domestic market and we are looking forward to seeing loved ones reunite and business travel

recommence between our two cities.” In total, Canberra Airport has increased its weekly flight schedule from 106 flights per week last week, to 151 flights per week. Popular coach company Greyhound Australia also restarted its Canberra to Melbourne route on Monday, after pre-selling tickets once the border announcement was confirmed on 20 November. Greyhound Australia marketing and communication manager Michael Leard said the daily services were back in operation with COVID-safe plans in place, and the company would keep an eye on demand. “At this time of year we would usually be trying to increase those services but we are running one daily and watching how the market goes,” he said. - Danielle Meddemmen

ChooseCBR vouchers promote local shopping The ACT Government is offering daily discount vouchers for a number of industries, as Canberrans are being encouraged to shop locally in the lead up to Christmas. The ChooseCBR initiative offers anyone over 18 up to $40 worth of digital discount vouchers per day, which will be available to redeem from Wednesday 9 December. Eligible ACT businesses in the retail, tourism, accommodation, arts and recreation, personal service and hospitality sectors can sign up to participate in the scheme, in a bid to keep money in the local community in the wake of the

coronavirus pandemic. The ACT Government has allocated $500,000 for the scheme, which will finish up on 21 December or until the funds have been exhausted. ChooseCBR discounts can be used for any transactions at eligible businesses, but can’t be redeemed for alcohol, tobacco, or gaming products. To be eligible, businesses must have a physical shopfront in the ACT, have received JobKeeper payments and have less than $10 million yearly turnover. Business and individuals can register via choosecbr.act.gov.au

Canberran named Apprentice of the Year To top off a huge year, Dickson College and Canberra Institute of Technology student Sebastian Connor was named Australian School-based Apprentice of the Year via a digital awards ceremony last week. During Years 11 and 12, Mr Connor worked as an apprentice at Pilot. Restaurant + Bar, a small

dining room in Ainslie serving a distinguished eight-course degustation menu. Mr Connor studied a Certificate III in Commercial Cookery and completed coursework for a tertiary Year 12 Certificate simultaneously, resulting in an early offer from the Australian National University.

Canberra small business owner Claire Harris has produced a series of public forums at Dickson Village linking those dreaming of change with those who have survived and thrived because of it. Claire said her Changemaker program, which is backed by the ACT Government, is about bringing people together to learn, share and implement ideas. “We need more changemakers in society to achieve equality, sustainability, health and overall fulfillment,” Claire said. Changemaker guest speaker and social entrepreneur Megan Gilmour said before change was thrust upon her, she liked her life as a mum with a career in international development.

But she faced a two-year ordeal of caring for her critically ill son and, when it was over, realised she could not go back to her old life. Instead, Megan started Missing School, a not-for-profit which seeks to keep ill children connected to their school. Missing School has now created Australia’s first national telepresence robot initiative to get sick kids back to school – it is “very different” than Zoom. The next Changemaker sessions are on Saturday 28 November and Friday 4 December 10am-12.30pm. For more information about Changemaker, visit innovatecommunicate.com/ changemaker-hub-dickson/

news Mental health challenges remain for bushfire-affected communities For NSW South Coast resident Grace Hornby, last summer’s bushfires are never far from her mind. Evacuating over the New Year period from her Long Beach home with her partner and two young children, she says she felt every emotion possible. “It was crazy, all of our senses were heightened, helicopters were flying over, sirens were going nonstop, we were constantly on the Fires Near Me app, I tuned into the RFS scanner, social media was just going off its head with people posting left right and centre … it was just crazy.” Now, Grace, who lives with anxiety, says she “feels sick” at the thought of her and her family’s experience last summer. “I actually feel my stomach turning, the heart is racing. I suffer from anxiety and I sort of go through … an uncontrollable, can’t calm down sort of feeling.

me back to the days where you couldn’t breathe [for the smoke].” She says this is a shared feeling in her community. Nearly one year on, many people are still dealing with the devastation of last summer, while some are looking to the upcoming bushfire season with fear and uncertainty. CEO of national mental health charity Sane Australia, Jack Heath, says while the mental health impacts of traumatic events can be “huge and long lasting”, they are often overlooked as things like housing and physical health take immediate priority in the aftermath. “Recovery is a process, a long process that is not linear. “Among the recommendations recently released from the Bushfire Royal Commission is the need to prioritise mental health support during and after natural disasters.” Sane has launched Life After Bushfires, a resource for those who have experienced bushfires

news Seselja re-endorsed as Liberal candidate ACT Senator Zed Seselja could be heading for a fourth term. Mr Seselja was re-endorsed as the Canberra Liberals Senate candidate in the next election at the local branch’s pre-selection meeting on Sunday 22 November. He defeated his challenger, moderate candidate Sam Fairall-Lee, by 178 to 47 votes. “The Canberra Liberals are the most democratic branch of any major party in the country,” Mr Seselja said. “To get broad endorsement from the party is a great honour. “What I want to do with that is to continue to fly the Liberal flag in Canberra, to deliver for Canberra, and to support Scott Morrison’s great leadership in delivering for the nation. These will be my priorities going forward until the next election – and should I be re-elected, it would

be my priority beyond that.” Mr Seselja’s running mate is Luke Hadfield, sales consultant with Luton Properties, and member of the Gungahlin Community Council. A former opposition leader in the ACT Legislative Assembly, Mr Seselja was first elected to the Senate in 2013, following a leadership stoush in which he ousted incumbent Liberals Senator Gary Humphries. At the time, some party members complained that pre-selection was held at too short notice for members to attend enough meetings to be eligible to vote. Mr Seselja was unopposed as the Liberal candidate for the 2016 and 2019 elections, and returned, both times. - Nick Fuller Find an extended version of this story at canberraweekly.com.au

La Niña in the ACT landscape It has been a year of damage control for ACT Parks and Conservation area manager, Peter Cotsell, who was at the forefront of the bushfire recovery effort. “This year was a reactive year, reactive in a way it had to be – we got out there, restored and remediated as much of the environment as we could,” he said. Mr Cotsell said early rains and floods were a mixed blessing after last summer’s bushfires were extinguished because, while they rehydrated the landscape, they also created new hazards. “Creeks are overflowing and looking spectacular, but it’s also mobilising a lot more sediment into the waterways, and trees are falling over.” In the alpine bogs, recovery teams worked hard to prevent erosion by wedging logs of coconut fibre in tributaries.

Overall, Mr Cotsell said the wet weather was a fantastic thing for the environment. Amidst a scourge of weeds that have sprouted since the fires, a stunning variety of rare native orchids reared their delicate heads. The Orchid Society of Canberra’s Conservation Group has helped the ACT Government identify rare orchids, and found some blooms that had never been recorded locally. Now that the recovery effort has addressed the most extreme risks post-bushfire, Mr Cotsell said the department was approaching a new way of managing the park. “Now is the time to look at the environment through a climate change lens, and work with scientists and fire practitioners.” - Rosa Ritchie Find an extended version of this story, with photos, online at canberraweekly.com.au

news Belco makes it onto Monopoly board Exhibition goes Behind the Lines The Monopoly board is a key feature of many Australian summer holidays – and this year, the 85-year-old game gets personal. A new limited-edition Australian Community Relief board will honour regional Australian towns that were heavily impacted by bushfires, floods or COVID-19 in 2020. The manufacturer, Winning Moves, promises to donate $5 per game purchased to the Australian Red Cross to assist those in need.

Custom pieces on the Australian Community Relief Monopoly board, which features Belconnen, Queanbeyan and Batemans Bay. Image supplied.

Notoriously hot property like Mayfair and Park Lane will be replaced by squares highlighting local communities across the country, including Belconnen, Queanbeyan and Batemans Bay. For players looking to invest, Batemans Bay is worth $120, double the price of Belconnen and Queanbeyan at $60 each. Other Australian spots on the custom board include Gippsland, Broken Hill, Noosa and Port Arthur. Unique ‘Community Chest’ and ‘Chance’ playing cards will make the game experience something more contemporary and distinctly Australian. For example, one card accuses the player who picks it up of hoarding 240 rolls of toilet paper and demands payment of $50 to the Community Chest as a fine. Visit canberraweekly.com.au for an extended version of this story.

A collection of works by Australia’s finest political cartoonists has captured the “dog’s breakfast” that has been 2020 in the Museum of Australian Democracy’s (MoAD) Behind the Lines 2020. Depictions of the storylines and political ramifications that have come out of 2020’s major events are on display now in what is, year on year, consistently MoAD’s most popular exhibition. “The thing I love about the art is it cuts straight to the truth,” said Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, who was on hand to launch Behind the Lines 2020. “You try to make sense of what’s going on and you turn over to the political cartoon and suddenly you see a scalpel going straight to the very bone, the very essence of it.” Showcasing 104 cartoons

A safer place to live and a great

created by 36 cartoonists, Behind the Lines 2020 both walks viewers through the year that was and helps its audience make sense of the wild ride it has been. Cathy Wilcox, cartoonist for the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, received the 2020 Political Cartoonist of the Year award at the exhibition launch. Ms Wilcox said at the core of her craft was the requirement to “bring a kind of everyperson’s view of what is happening in the news”. “We try to read between the lines of what’s said by people in power, examine the threads of vested interest, and un-spin the message. In short, we just call out the BS.” Behind the Lines: the year in political cartoons 2020 is open at MoAD for the next 12 months.

news ACT Chief Minister’s Export Awards 2020

Terra Preta Tuffles of Braidwood export around 85% of their Black truflles to markets in the Northern Hemisphere. Photo Lean Timms.

Terra Preta Truffles bringing life back to the forest To Peter Marshall, the founder of Terra Preta Truffles, Tuber melanosporum, or Black truffles, are a passion that has led to a globally recognised business exporting not just high-grade truffles, but

also expertise in forestry and soil management. Terra Preta Truffles is located in Braidwood NSW. It has been the family home and business base for over 30 years.

76 Hardwick Crescent, Kippax 26

canberraweekly.com.au

Where did it all start? Peter comes from a farming background and was keen to learn how to integrate trees into a farm and make a three-dimensional agriculture that was deep on and above the ground. “This means good soil six feet below the ground and good air 40 feet above the ground, rather than the standard 2 inches of grass most people think of as healthy farming. “I wanted to see if we could make a long term living out of forestry by creating high quality timber with an understorey of some sort of agriculture that would pay for it, and that’s what we did,” says Peter. Even though he knew about mycorrhizae in pine forests, Peter was surprised to find that you could actually grow mycorrhizal truffles and generate a living from them. “When the truffles went in 15 years ago it was very early stages of the industry [in Australia] and there was a lot of poor-quality advice going around. We found out that in those days most truffle plantings in the country had failed.” It has taken a number of trials, but Peter says he now knows what works. As soon as Terra Preta started producing good quality truffles, they started exporting them. “We now have about 24 hectares of truffle trees, which means that in the next few years we will be a very substantial exporter of truffles. Last year we exported a bit under half a tonne. The aim is to be exporting about 10 tonnes or so in the next four or five years.” This volume will make Terra Preta a big player on the world market and they are aiming to be noticed. Peter says that in some years, all of France produces about a total of 40 tonnes. “We have put a huge amount of effort into understanding the biochemistry of the truffle and

figuring out how to maximise their flavour, resilience and strength. They are a living thing and if their immune system is compromised and weak, they won’t handle being transported,” he says. “Our truffles can handle an air freight trip to Europe and still be good for weeks after landing. Terra Preta is focused on quality and will only deliver a premium product to the market.” What about the truffle? Most of us think that truffles are grown on certain types of trees, but it isn’t quite that straightforward. In France, the truffles grow around three species of oaks. Peter says that using science has enabled Terra Preta to grow them under a range of different oaks including Japanese and Mexican varieties. “So, we are now growing French truffles under Japanese oak trees and exporting them to Tokyo. This is really special to our Japanese customers. The truffles have not only a distinctive flavour but a personal connection for the chefs.” Peter sells about 15% of his truffles in Australia and the rest are exported. He says that the majority of future growth will be in export. “We have people queued up and waiting. Our clients in Tokyo will take 10 times what we send now.” Innovative packaging Scrubbing and sterilising the truffles after they are collected is complex and time consuming, but they have put a lot of effort into export packaging. “I hate using Styrofoam so we developed completely insulated, compositing boxes using shredded newspaper fibre as insulation. We worked with a packaging firm in Melbourne to develop this. We have a nice presentation and when it arrives at the other end, they don’t have to worry about a Styrofoam box.” Find an extended version of this story online at canberraweekly. com.au and canberrabusiness.com

Heading to the one-year anniversary of the Black Summer bushfires, communities are optimistically looking to the future and finding ways to bring tourism and life back to their small towns. One community in the greater Capital Region has the opportunity to re-create their local creek scape which was destroyed in the fires and is now overgrown with weeds and blueberry bushes. A support organisation is looking to partner with a youth group to clear and revitalise the natural space. They are in need of any secondhand, good condition gardening tools including shovels, wheelbarrows, gardening gloves, pickaxes, pruning shears and trowels. With the aid of these tools, this community can create something that will bring hope and joy after an extremely devastating year. Donations can be picked up by or posted to the organisation. To donate, visit givit.org.au/donate-items, search by category “Gardening Tools” to view requests located in your area (select 100km range from your postcode if based in Canberra). After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off. GIVIT supports more than 350 charities and community groups across the Capital Region by matching your items with people who need them most.

Fire up the barbie

There’s nothing that says Australian summer more than a barbecue on a warm evening. This week, food writer Libby Kimber brings you two recipes that will take your barbie to the next level. Recipes from Barbecue This! by Luke Hines, Published by Plum, RRP $39.99, Photography by Mark Roper.

Baharat backstraps Serves 4

Crispy skin salmon with buttery pea smash Serves 4 2 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, plus extra for drizzling 4 x 170g salmon fillets, deboned and skin on Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 garlic clove, finely grated 500g frozen baby peas 80ml (1/3 cup) chicken broth or water

2 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, plus extra for brushing

Finely grated zest and juice of 1 lemon

Finely grated zest and juice of 1 lemon

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 tsp sea salt

Baharat spice mix

1 tsp garlic powder

3 tsp smoked paprika

1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper

2 tsp ground coriander

1/2 tsp dried chilli flakes

2 tsp ground cumin

2 cucumbers, finely sliced

1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

2 Tbsp finely chopped dill fronds

1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper

2 Tbsp finely chopped flat-leaf parsley leaves

1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

1 Tbsp finely chopped mint leaves

Cook the lamb with the lid closed for 3–4 minutes on each side for medium–rare or until cooked to your liking. It should be golden brown and charred on the outside and soft pink in the middle. Transfer to a wooden board, cover loosely with foil and leave to rest for 5 minutes. For the cucumber salsa, place the oil, lemon zest and juice, mustard, salt, garlic powder, pepper and chilli flakes in a large bowl and whisk well to combine. Add the cucumber and fresh herbs and toss to coat. Season with extra salt and pepper to taste. Cut the lamb into thick slices, divide among plates and serve with the cucumber salsa.

Buttery pea smash

2 shallots, finely sliced

3 Tbsp extra-virgin olive or avocado oil

Preheat the barbecue grill to hot and brush it with a little olive oil.

1 cup loosely packed flat-leaf parsley leaves

Herb salad 1 tsp coconut sugar

Place the lamb, spice mix and oil in a large bowl. Season well with salt and pepper and toss to coat. Set aside at room temperature for 10 minutes for the flavours to develop.

1 cup loosely packed mint leaves

40g unsalted butter

Cucumber salsa

1 tsp Dijon mustard

Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 lemon, cut into wedges

4 x 200g lamb backstraps, trimmed and pounded to flatten slightly

For the baharat spice mix, mix all the ingredients in a small bowl.

our cover star

3 Tbsp coconut cream

For the herb salad, place the shallot, coconut sugar and lemon zest and juice in a small bowl and mix well. Season to taste and leave to soften for 10–15 minutes. Meanwhile, for the buttery pea smash, warm the butter in a saucepan over medium heat (use your side burner if your barbecue has one), add the garlic and fry gently until softened, about 1–2 minutes. Add the peas and broth or water, bring to the boil and cook until the peas are just tender, about 2–3 minutes. Remove from the heat, add the coconut cream and puree with a hand-held blender until lovely and smooth. Cover with foil to keep warm and set aside. Preheat the barbecue flat plate to medium–hot and grease with the olive oil. Place the salmon on the flat plate, skin-side down, and cook for 3–4 minutes or until the skin is crispy and the flesh has begun to cook through. Using tongs, carefully turn the salmon over and continue to cook for about 1 minute for medium salmon or longer until it is cooked to your liking. Transfer to a plate and rest for a few minutes. Add the herbs to the softened shallot mixture, toss well and season to taste again. To serve, spoon the buttery pea smash onto plates. Arrange the salmon on top and the herb salad on the side. Drizzle with a little more olive oil, season with salt and pepper and serve with the lemon wedges on the side.

and cheese, or the ‘Americano’ with sausage, cheese, tomato and mustard. Owner Michael Seedhom says crepes are a family speciality – he and his family own creperies in Egypt where Michael honed his craft – and he wants to share this with the people of Canberra. “When we opened six months ago it was all about takeaway,” he says, due to the COVID-19 restrictions at the time. “Now, we’re moving towards more of a café setup and café menu.” While Crepe Stop’s many loyal customers have referred to the creperie as a “hidden gem”, a new outdoor seating area has just been completed to make the venue more visible from the street and allow customers to enjoy their speciality crepes and quality coffee outdoors in the warmer months.

Crepe Stop’s latest menu features sweet and savoury classics and new flavours to suit all tastes.

Any crepe can be made ‘rainbow’ for just $1 extra, a Crepe Stop signature speciality, while the coffees are made with a state-of-the art machine which can be programmed by the baristas to remember your exact coffee specifications. “The machine uses coffee beans that are environment-friendly, and the machine is also 75% recycled steel,” Michael says. The sustainability approach continues in the fit-out of the store, too, with recycled wood features and bio-packaging for all takeaway orders.

After photographing all 483 Clem Cummings bus shelters across Canberra and illustrating over 80 of his favourites, Newcastle-based artist Trevor Dickinson has now written the book on them. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.

New book shows how Trevor Dickinson put Canberra’s concrete bus shelters on the map With an immense body of work documenting and beautifully depicting Canberra’s Clem Cummings bus shelters over the last eight years, Newcastle-based artist Trevor Dickinson has now literally written the book on them. As is so often the case, it took the fresh set of eyes of an out-of-towner to recognise, appreciate and capture the true eccentricity and distinction of Canberra’s iconic Clem Cummings bus shelters. So many locals had grown up with or grown accustomed them and in turn didn’t think much of the funky 1970s era concrete cylindrical shelters. “It just felt very Canberran, but people of Canberra took it for granted,” Dickinson told Canberra Weekly. 54

canberraweekly.com.au

“I like trying to find things that people don’t really notice. “Anywhere you go, you’re lucky to find an urban structure that’s just all over and just taken for granted because of that. “It’s not often you get something that touches the whole city and almost defines it.” It wasn’t until Dickinson first spotted the bus shelters across town during a residency at Megalo Print Studio in 2012 and set about drawing an initial series of them, that they started to get the recognition they deserved some 38 years after they were first designed. “I did the bus shelter early on and it was quite popular … Right from the first one I realised people appreciated it. “That always makes me think I’m onto

something because I like the work to connect to locals. “I dipped my toes into it and realised more and more that this was a project worth following.” Since then his works have been plastered across coffee cups, playing cards, stubby holders, tea towels, jigsaw puzzles and now a new book. Titled Trevor Dickinson’s Beautiful Bus Shelters of Canberra, the 166-page hardback book covers Dickinson’s vast eight-year project. After his run of initial illustrations, Dickinson wouldn’t have known just how far down the Clem Cummings bus shelter rabbit hole he’d end up going. “I realised it would be a really good project to just record and do a drawing of loads of them for an exhibition, and in doing that I wanted to record all of them in Canberra,” he said. Between 2012 and 2018, Dickinson photographed all 483 of the iconic concrete bus shelters in Canberra over two to three years and illustrated more than 80. “Every time I’d come to Canberra for a market I would actually go off and collect bus shelters and tick them off like a nerdy train spotter,” he said. “I was trying to get different times of year, different times of day, different weather and I realised it was actually a portrait of Canberra I was getting as well. “More and more, it felt like I was actually doing something that hadn’t been done.” Part one of Beautiful Bus Shelters of Canberra contains all of Dickinson’s final artworks, plus original drawings and other associated imagery. It opens with a succinct history of the thencontroversial shelters, including snippets from local news coverage, copies of original design documents, and a bio of Clem Cummings himself. Part two is a photographic record of all 483 bus shelters in Canberra listed alphabetically in suburb and street order for easy reference. It also goes to some length to show the groundswell of community engagement Dickinson has enjoyed since embarking on the project. “Someone took my cards and went out to every bus shelter and took a picture of it with the card,” he said. “I love it. It feels like I’m really doing my job, I’m saying look at these and people are responding.” Trevor Dickinson’s Beautiful Bus Shelters of Canberra is available now via newcastleproductions.bigcartel.com or in store at selected outlets. - Denholm Samaras

Now showing Ellie & Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt) (M) The bubbly, high achieving 17-yearold Ellie (Sophie Hawkshaw), despite her daily affirmations, is struggling to find the courage to ask her classmate and crush, Abbie (Zoe Terakes), to the formal. After matter-of-factly coming out to her mother Erica (Marta Dusseldorp), Ellie is approached by the ghost of her Aunt Tara (Julia Billington), a self-proclaimed “Fairy Godmother”, to guide young Ellie through this challenging time. Writer/director Monica Zanetti tackles the angst of the Australian formal in her feature directorial debut, complicated with Ellie’s burgeoning feelings for her female classmate. Insisting she is normal, and that such an occurrence is nothing special, Ellie’s coming-out nevertheless sends shockwaves through her family, including her

dead aunt, and unlocks a trauma from her past. Hawkshaw is likeable as the upbeat, type-A Ellie who starts her days reciting positive mantras to help her focus on her goals. Identifying a new goal in asking Abbie to the formal, Ellie is forced to dig deep within herself instead of relying on impersonal platitudes. It is the appearance of Ellie’s looser, freespirited (dead) aunt that seemingly complicates matters while also revealing a deeper reason for Ellie’s mother’s growing concerns. Terakes steals the show as Abbie; effortlessly laid-back, sarcastic and wise beyond her years, Abbie finds Ellie amusing but is quick to establish herself as one not to be played with. Verdict: A heartfelt, sweetly awkward coming-of-age comedy that also explores intergenerational trauma. Asking a girl to the formal is never easy! 3 stars. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

Book talk

Jeff Popple recommends five books to put under the tree this Christmas. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com The Sentinel by Lee Child and Andrew Child Bantam, $32.99

Jack Reacher is the classic action figure. A former military policeman who roams America like a modern-day Western hero, Reacher appeals to a wide range of readers and the novels by Lee Child are regularly found on the top of bestseller lists. The Sentinel is the fi rst co-written effort by Child and his brother, Andrew, who will be taking over sole responsibility for the series from next year. The story involves a cyber-attack on a small American town and is a briskly paced, action-fi lled tale that hurtles to an exciting climax. A good, light holiday read that is a must for the Reacher aficionado in your family.

Stories about male aviators, such as KingsfordSmith and Bert Hinkler, have dominated Australia’s history, but as Kathy Mexted shows in this excellent book, there have also been some extraordinary female pilots who have been largely overlooked. Mexted shares the stories of 10 trailblazing women pilots who delivered Spitfi res during World War II, tackled the temperamental New Guinea weather in a small plane, flew solo around the world and saved lives with the Royal Flying Doctor Service. She also recounts the story of Deborah Wardley, who took on Ansett in the courts for the right to become a commercial pilot. A fascinating and inspiring book.

Best Australian Political Cartoons edited by Russ Radcliffe Scribe, $32.99

Those after some light humour to fi nish off a dreadful 2020 will appreciate this annual collection by Russ Radcliffe of the best Australian political cartoons of the year. From climate change and the devastating bushfi res to the impact of COVID-19 to the tantrums of Trump and the assault on the ABC by the Government, the cartoons cover all the highs, and lows, of the political year. They range from the very funny to the bitingly satirical to the nicely poignant, as in Andrew Weldon’s COVID-inspired The Kiss 2020. A great gift and an amusing reminder of a bad year.

Together by Christmas by Karen Swan Macmillan, $32.99

Also containing some amusing moments is the latest seasonal romance by Karen Swan, Together by Christmas. Set in a vividly described Amsterdam with snow falling and the ice thickening on the canals, it tells the story of British celebrity photographer Lee who is trying to establish a new life with her young son. When someone leaves a book and a message in the basket of her bicycle, she fi nds old secrets resurfacing as she tries to track down the book’s author. Is it the chance for new love or will her world come tumbling down? A nice present for romantics and those after a pleasant, engaging read.

Christmas Is Murder by Val McDermid Sphere, $24.99

Finally, Britain’s Queen of Crime, Val McDermid, provides a darker view of Christmas with this enjoyable collection of short stories. Selected from across the breadth of her career, the stories deal with murder, revenge, poisoning and a kidnapped Santa Claus. Her popular pairing of Tony Hill and Carol Jordan features in the opening story about a seasonal serial killer and there is also a very good tribute to Holmes and Watson with the clever Holmes For Christmas, that builds to a dark and unexpected conclusion. All the stories are well written and very enjoyable, making it an ideal book to dip into over the Christmas holidays.

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, allegedly, and they’re also ‘forever’. But what about made in a lab in record time? A team of international scientists, including from the ANU, have defied nature to make diamonds at room temperature in a lab in minutes. Usually, diamonds are created over billions of years, 150 kilometres deep in temperatures above 1,000 degrees Celsius. The team made two types of diamonds, the kind found in jewellery and another kind called ‘Lonsdaleite’, found in nature at the site of meteorite impacts. The discovery won’t replace mined diamonds, though, as lead researcher Professor Jodie Bradby says the team are after a different market: “regular mined diamonds are the cubic diamond, and we

BEFORE: My bare balcony was a blank canvas.

AFTER: My new upcycled starter garden.

My weekend upcycling starter garden WITH HOME EDITOR CASSANDRA POWER

I’m on a mission to beautify my balcony. I want it to be comfortable enough to do yoga, lie down and read a book, have a wine with a friend and contain a colourful, useful garden. All in a cost-effective, sustainable way and within the limitations of a rental. I suspect my ideal balcony is a couple of weekends of work away, but I’ve made a start. My first stop was Canberra’s recycled furniture warehouse, The Green Shed in Hume. It’s full of second-hand bargain items hoping for a makeover and while any given day will provide the luck of the draw, there is an endless supply of coffee tables and chest of drawers. Almost overwhelmed by choice, I 60

canberraweekly.com.au

left with a coffee small enough to fit in my three-door hatch and honestly, I was just kind of making it up as I went. Browsing Pinterest for upcycling project inspo, I found a huge range of options for turning these unloved items into homeware art and chose the easiest one. When I moved to Canberra from Victoria last June, my tools did not make the first carload cut and, despite best intentions, they remained behind the closed border for months. Replacing them was neither cost-effective nor sustainable so I was thrilled to sign up to the new Women’s Shed in Canberra. The group meet at the back of recycled furniture store, Thor’s

Hammer in Griffith on Saturday mornings, where COVID-safe workshops are available for members to bring in and work on their projects. I struck it lucky the Saturday I attended the Women’s Shed, being able to take part in a hand and power tools workshop with SALT (Supporting and Linking Tradeswomen), an organisation that supports and mentors tradeswomen in Australia. This was the 303rd workshop SALT has run since 2009. Run by a boss army of women with a seemingly endless list of qualifications across most trades and many industries, they were somewhat over-qualified to teach us how to make a box out of ply – but they did it graciously anyway. My group leader, Lani, was originally from the Gold Coast. After multiple jobs in retail Lani moved to Canberra, took up an electrical apprenticeship and has nearly completed her studies at CIT. I had so much fun with the excellent and hilarious ladies in my group (who I hope to see again at the upcoming furniture upholstery workshop). We had a lovely lunch and I was given a certificate and a chest of drawers to be upcycled. And finally, I was able to get home, set up and get into it. To begin, I cleaned and lightly sanded my furniture pieces, then painted them. I used chalk paint because I’m obsessed with the texture. The coastal blue and lavender hues were chosen to match the pastel tones of my interior decor and to make the colours in my garden pop. For any project, it can be tempting to purchase a lot of products, such as

paint openers, paint stirrers and drop mats, and if you do a lot of upcycling this can be a good investment. But as cost-effectiveness and sustainability was my key, I made do with what I had. I sacrificed an old sheet and opened and stirred my paint with the knife I had long dedicated to odd jobs around the house. When my furniture and a selection of garden pots (picked up for free on a buy/swap/sell site) were painted, I lined the drawers with the plastic bags I had accumulated for emergencies and swore would be repurposed rather than make their way into landfill, then poured in the soil. Despite being born into generations of “green-thumbed women” all who managed their own epic country gardens, at 35, I am yet to keep a plant alive. But I figure everything else about 2020 has gone to plan so why not try again now? I chose my plants for a variety of reasons including: lavender because it reminds me of my amazing great grandmother, succulents because they’re awesome and slightly addictive, petunias because my mum told me to, and a variety of herbs that support my new domestic goddess outlook on life. For gardening expertise, Canberra’s Environment Centre run workshops to help you plant Canberra climate appropriate plants if you’re after that. I have so many plans for this balcony; it will have water features, solar lights, and recycled palette furniture. But for now, I’m proud of my little starter garden and the fact I’ve remembered to water it for seven days in a row!

An ‘awesome’ entertainer Forde 33 Justice Kelly Street This family home in Forde enjoys space, light and sleek, modern design in an enviable position close to Mulligan’s Flat Reserve. “This home is extremely versatile and would appeal to a wide range of buyers, growing families, or families with older teenage children,” says McGrath North

Canberra sales agent, Dimi Romero. The home has been custom designed with four separate living areas, including a large open plan kitchen family and dining space on the lower floor and a 62sqm rumpus space upstairs with built-in bar and pool table. Each bedroom is segregated

canberraweeklyrealestate.com.au

from one another, while the main bedroom suite boasts an enormous walk-in robe/dressing room and large, modern ensuite. McGrath North Canberra sales agent and director Justin Taylor says the “peaceful location” near to the Reserve, the balcony with impressive views and the spotted gum hardwood flooring are just some of this home’s standout features. “There’s a spacious and private rear yard with ample room for inground pool, well-established gardens with Japanese maples; [this is a] super impressive home set in popular locale, inspection a must,” he says. Taylor says the home is “awesome” for entertaining, with 33 Justice Kelly Street boasting a built-

in barbecue, ceiling fan and large decked area outside. Further luxury features of the home include a walk-in pantry, multiple skylights, ducted vacuum, rainwater tank, split system heating and cooling and gas fireplace.

property news

Weekly market wrap Auction clearance rate down, agents, vendors comfortable In a sign our property market is not invincible, on Saturday 21 November Domain reported Canberra recorded a 73% preliminary auction clearance rate. Just under three-quarters of properties selling under auction conditions in most markets would be a fantastic result, however, after months of strong results in Canberra it looks a little disappointing. Could this be an early sign of growth in values slowing? Keeping an eye on the median result is an early indicator of where the market sees values are heading. On Saturday 21 November, the median auction sale price was $960,000 and has remained above $900,000 throughout November. This shows the market is comfortably pricing in significant increases to property values. Moderation of the preliminary auction clearance rate from its dizzying height of 92% the week prior is likely due to vendors and agents being sufficiently comfortable with the strength of the market to aggressively set reserve expectations on the basis of if the property fails to

sell on auction day, market demand will generate a sale shortly thereafter. Last weekend, the first signs buyer urgency was emerging from people who have been casually researching the market suddenly realising they have less time than they anticipated to secure a property and receive their $25,000 HomeBuilder Grant. From Thursday 26 November, buyers have seven days to make their decision and have time to exchange contracts in 2020 to secure the grant. Waiting to issue paperwork past this point leaves too much margin for error should anything unforeseen delay the exchange process. Buyers who were looking in July, August and September are facing vastly different market conditions now compared to when they started researching the market. Lack of quality apartments and townhouses to choose from combined with heavily pre-sold existing projects plus increasing values illustrates the importance of acting decisively and entering the market as soon as you can afford to.

ACT industry celebrates REIACT Awards The annual Real Estate Institute of the ACT (REIACT) Awards for Excellence held on Saturday 21 November, celebrated the ACT’s real estate sector after a year that has changed the way the industry has had to operate. Blackshaw Gungahlin took out the Community Service award, while Maria Selleck of Maria Selleck Properties was named as Residential Salesperson of the Year. Other winners included: Commercial Property Manager of the Year – Phillip Parker,

As well, Colliers International ACT was inducted into the REIACT Hall of Fame.

WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST

I anticipate high sales volumes will occur in the off-plan market for the duration of 2020 and carry momentum into 2021. A large cohort of buyers who do not fit the strict criteria for the HomeBuilder Scheme and intend to reside in their new property are actively taking advantage of stamp duty discounts and concessions they may not have otherwise been eligible for. Incredibly low borrowing costs, low rate of unemployment, lack of stock and high personal incomes look to collectively play an important role lifting residential property values.

Zango appoints new CEO

Local property platform Zango has appointed former REA executive Darryn McRae as the company’s new CEO. McRae will leave REA as its third longest serving employee and said joining Zango was too interesting a proposition to turn down. “I was particularly drawn to the fact that the ACT is a smaller market and Zango’s structure and systems mean it can be nimble which is incredibly important in today’s digital world,” McRae said. “The agent-owned model of Zango is also unique and I am excited to immerse myself into that dynamic.” Zango’s current CEO Ben Faulks will move into the role of director.

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

The Full Moon on the 30th makes us all feel a little strange about the events of 2020 and yet hopeful for the year ahead. It warns of misunderstandings with others so be patient when dealing with confusing matters. Problems are likely with modes of transport and technology.

The Full Moon on the 30th puts

The Full Moon on the 30th indicates a desire to escape from the drudgery of life. Whilst there is a good chance of this happening in the future, in the meantime you are going to have to concentrate on learning something new with your job.

The Full Moon on the 30th

The Full Moon on the 30th warns you to watch what you say as it could come out the wrong way and cause misunderstandings all around. Also, this is not the ideal time to buy anything large or expensive. If you’re feeling especially tired, be sure to rest.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE The Full Moon on the 30th indicates that you have some serious decisions to make concerning your family, children, or those you love. One side of you wants to dive in and make things happen as quickly as possible, whereas you would be wiser to take things more slowly and carefully.

have all sorts of misunderstandings with others. Other people’s anxieties have a way of rubbing off on you, so if you want peace steer clear of moaners and controversial subjects.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG The Full Moon on the 30th is going to be a time when nothing seems to be going right and you feel isolated and misunderstood. Of course, the truth is somewhat different and more positive; try to talk this situation out with someone you trust.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT The Full Moon on the 30th warns of issues on the career and job front and it will be extremely hard to get anywhere. The only thing you can do is to see this as a lesson in patience and to have faith in the future.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV The Full Moon on the 30th warns you to be careful of not breaking any laws because if you do you are bound to be caught. Also be wise and keep out of any rumblings of discontent amongst your friends. Romantic relationships might be more tender and loving this week.

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC The Full Moon on the 30th indicates you may need to have a heart to heart with a family member to ease any issues which are dividing you. New relationships formed now could be with a sensitive or more spiritual person and may come from involvement in groups or clubs.

indicates that you are impatient and fast-moving and that a little forethought will save you no end of trouble. You can hardly wait to get stuck into some project or another and yet a little bit of caution would be your wisest move.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB The Full Moon on the 30th indicates that an unpleasant situation may come to a head, there may be a child or younger person whose behaviour has got just that little bit out of hand and it is time to make it clear to them they need to change.

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR The Full Moon on the 30th heightens your sensitivity and you might be more inclined to rise to the bait in any conversation that could easily turn into an argument. If you want a quiet life at home, then keep your head down for a while.
