This week... From the editor Greetings, dear readers. How are you travelling? I hope this message finds you doing as well as possible. Remember, it’s important to look after your health and wellbeing, so I trust you find time to indulge in something you enjoy that’s good for your body, mind and spirit. For me, there’s nothing quite like a dose of Vitamin Sea to shake off the cobwebs and refresh the soul. Whether it was diving into the ocean at Casey’s Beach last March BC (before Covid), dipping my toes in the invigorating waters at Pambula in June or Kioloa in August, or plunging into the sparkling turquoise waters off Noosa Beach last Sunday, time spent by the ocean both rejuvenates and relaxes me. And when I can’t get to the sea for months at a stretch, I find immersing myself in the abundant natural beauty of our region will do the trick. Sometimes it’s a bushwalk, a stroll through my local nature reserve, or simply sitting on the back deck gazing at the clouds or stars, listening to birdsong or weeding the garden that will boost my spirits. What’s your tonic of choice? Reasons to be grateful this past week include an indulgent getaway to Queensland’s beautiful Sunshine Coast (read about it in a coming edition), hilarity at The Wharf Revue at Canberra Theatre, yoga, and Lifeline Canberra’s festive morning tea. Take care,

news In the days leading up to its Wednesday 9 December launch, over 250 Canberra small businesses have registered for the ACT Government’s ChooseCBR discount voucher program. The sentiment among many of the local businesses signed up is positive; they see the program as an effective way to promote shopping locally in the lead up to Christmas. Registrations for the two-week trial period have been open to small businesses with an ACT shopfront operating in the retail, tourism and accommodation, arts and recreation, personal services and hospitality sectors, that received JobKeeper this year. Owner of The Bank Skatepark in Fyshwick, Aaron Gardner, told Canberra Weekly he thinks the scheme is a “smart idea” to encourage Canberrans to shop locally. “Previously people have just bought online because it’s easier; with this people can say we’re going to save money, we’re going to get the item straight away, and we’re supporting local,” he said. “Once I get the money, I take my kids out to

restaurants, I’ll shop local too and it’s going to circulate. It doesn’t just get spent once; it’s spent multiple times within the local economy.” Mr Gardner said the timing of the trial scheme in the lead up to Christmas complements the shop component of his business. “We set ourselves up being an indoor skatepark for Christmas with our scooter sales … Having a big Christmas is pretty important,” he said. The initial trial of the scheme will run with $500,000 worth of discounts in the form of five daily vouchers, each of which must be used at a different business. For every $1 of government spending through ChooseCBR, businesses are expected to benefit by between $4 and $6. As at 8 December, almost 17,000 Canberrans had registered for the program, which was music to the ears of Impact Comics owner, Mal Briggs. “I think that’s terrific,” he said. “It’s a good sign people are preparing to or actively spending money in the community.” Mr Briggs said he’s able to promote the scheme “with confidence” knowing he’s encouraging

people to “not just shop with us, but with other Canberra businesses” too. Following the trial, the ACT Government will evaluate the program before a second rollout next year worth $2 million. Visit canberraweekly.com.au for an extended version of this story. - Denholm Samaras

South Coast tourism-led economic recovery leads to worker shortage With the rise of the ‘staycation’ and holidaying locally, the NSW South Coast’s tourism sector has seen abnormally high demand throughout winter and spring as COVID-19 restrictions have continued to ease. Eurobodalla Shire Council economic development manager Teresa Leve told Canberra Weekly 2020 has bucked the trend with tourists surging outside of their traditional summer high season. “We have a captured market because people have been holidaying within their own backyard and states, that has what’s been very positive for our industry in what would be the off months,” she said. Ms Leve said during months like August and September, which would usually be “very quiet”, many businesses have instead seen their “best results in that period” for some time. “It’s certainly been an extraordinary year for everyone,” she said. “We’ve had three distinct challenges here being the bushfires, floods and COVID restrictions.” “But even through this very challenging tourism year, people have continued to visit Eurobodalla.” Year-over-year, the local tourism sector was up 19% overall in October 2020 compared to 8

canberraweekly.com.au

October 2019. Coming into summer, Ms Leve said she’s expecting the year-over-year growth to continue in December before levelling out in January. Owner of Bay Breeze Motel in Batemans Bay, Alison Miers, told Canberra Weekly there’s a “positive” sentiment in town amongst business owners. “Everyone’s extremely busy and extremely positive leading into the Christmas season,” she said. “Fingers crossed everyone’s respectful of the restrictions still in place … When the population swells from 16,000 up to 100,000 it’s difficult to accommodate those people in the restaurants.” This sustained economic growth and the fact that summer is here has meant numerous NSW South Coast businesses in tourism and tourism-related sectors have begun advertising more positions, with something of a shortage of workers available in the region. “What’s happened with changes in restrictions and I suppose businesses getting back to normal operations, or a new normal, is where they’ve had to retract in their staffing, many of those jobs are coming back on board,”

Ms Leve said. Ms Miers said a lot of businesses are “crying out for staff”. “Most businesses that you go into are either advertising online or advertising in their windows for staff in the hospitality industry. “I can’t get a receptionist, I normally have a full-time receptionist, I’ve been working seven days a week since early September.” Compounding that issue is the fact there is currently an accommodation shortage due to the 2019-20 bushfires reducing housing stock in the region. “Accommodation’s very difficult, there’s just nothing around,” Ms Miers said. “I could have sold out the motel 10 times over with the amount of calls I get. “I hope tourists are mindful of the situation everyone’s been through at the Coast, it’s still very raw for everyone. “With everything else the businesses have had to endure since COVID, everyone’s still finding their feet.” Outside the “very key” tourism economy, Ms Leve said the resident population has been engaging more with local businesses in a way that has “really impressed” her. - Denholm Samaras

news Architects want public to tell War Memorial ‘Hands Off Anzac Hall’

Anzac Hall could be knocked down as part of a $500 million proposal to expand the Australian War Memorial’s exhibition space and create new Afghanistan and Iraq galleries.

The Australian Institute of Architects (AIA) has launched a social media campaign in a bid to save the Australian War Memorial’s awardwinning exhibition space, Anzac Hall, from demolition. The Hall could be knocked down as part of a $500 million proposal to expand the exhibition space by 80% and create new Afghanistan and Iraq galleries.

Federal Environment Minister Sussan Ley is expected to make a decision by tomorrow, Friday 11 December. Anzac Hall was opened in 2001, and received the Sir Zelman Cowen Award for best major public building of its year. But Memorial director Matt Anderson told ABC Radio National in October that the Hall was no longer fit for purpose. “It didn’t have the ability to be expanded,” he said. “Since the Hall opened, we’ve had men and women in harm’s way in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, and we need more space to tell their stories.” The AIA, however, believe that the “wasteful and unnecessary” demolition would undermine the integrity of Australia’s heritage protections. Their ‘Hands Off Anzac Hall’ campaign invites all Australians to share stories of their experiences visiting the Hall as

a way of showing their support for saving it. “We hope this campaign will provide decisionmakers with yet more evidence that the community does not support destroying Anzac Hall, which is unquestionably one of Australia’s most iconic exhibition spaces,” Clare Cousins, past AIA National President and #handsoffAnzacHall campaign spokesperson, said. Former AWM directors, war veterans, the Hall’s architect, John Denton, and the Australian Heritage Council have opposed the demolition since former director Dr Brendan Nelson proposed it in 2018. Ms Cousins accused the AWM management of undertaking “one of the most misleading and inadequate community consultations for any major public project on record”. “Nowhere in any of their limited

public consultation materials do they mention demolishing Anzac Hall. Yet overwhelmingly the demolition is raised as a concern every time public submissions are invited,” she said. Mr Anderson told the ABC that as consequence of more than 160 submissions received during the initial phase, the Memorial made more than 50 changes, updates and clarifications in the document. He also said he was confident that the demolition would not violate any heritage protections, while an independent heritage architect had concluded the proposal would give the Memorial more space to tell stories. - Nick Fuller Find an extended version of this story online at canberraweekly.com.au.

The ACT is the first jurisdiction outside Europe with a population of more than 100,000 to achieve 100% renewable energy, ACT Minister for Energy, Water, and Emissions Reduction, Shane Rattenbury, announced in the Legislative Assembly on Thursday 3 December. The Greens leader tabled the 2019–20 Minister’s Report under the Climate Change and Greenhouse Gas Reduction Act 2010. “Through our fifth Renewables Auction in 2019–20, we secured renewable electricity systems to support our growing population and help us replace fossil fuel gas and transport fuel with zero emissions electricity from wind and solar farms,” Mr Rattenbury said. Switching to renewable energy has allowed the Territory to exceed its target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 40% on 1990 levels, Mr Rattenbury said. In fact, 2019–20 emissions

(1,684 kilotons of carbon dioxide equivalent) were 45.3% below 1990 levels. The ACT Government has claimed this is “a nation-leading milestone”. Mr Rattenbury acknowledged this sharp reduction was partly due to COVID-19 restrictions on travel, and expected some rebound of transport emissions as the economy recovered. “While we should all be proud of these achievements, we are still faced with confronting reminders that climate change is here and its impacts are growing,” Mr Rattenbury said on Friday 4 December. He said the Government now intends to reduce emissions from transport and fossil fuel gas, which produce more than 80% of the ACT’s emissions. news Police hunt forest for missing link Dark web murder contract Nearly 50 years since her murder, ACT Policing is conducting a search of the Fairbairn pine plantation where 20-year-old Keren Rowland’s body was found in 1971. ACT Policing Detective Senior Constable Beere said police were hunting for a silver or gold friendship bracelet engraved with the name Lynette, a gift Ms Rowland purchased at the Royal Canberra Show on the night of her death. “For us, it’s a very important piece of evidence that we would like to recover,” she said. During the initial investigation, detectives suspected the victim’s killer took the bracelet. ACT Policing now hope to determine whether there is meaning attached to its absence. Detective Senior Constable

Beere said ACT Policing contacted NSW Police to obtain information about Ivan Milat, one of many persons of interest nominated for this case. “We don’t rule out any avenue of enquiry until it’s been exhausted.” Ms Rowland was reported missing by family members after she failed to arrive at a party at The Statesman Hotel, Curtin on the night of 26 February 1971. Her car was found abandoned with an empty tank in Campbell, and her remains were discovered three months later near the Air Disaster Memorial. She was five months pregnant when she disappeared. A 26-year-old Canberra woman faced the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday 8 December, charged with two counts of attempted murder. ACT Policing allege the woman agreed to pay $20,000 over the dark web for the murder of two people who were known to her. It is alleged the woman paid $6,000 in initial payments to a website believed to be fraudulent. ACT Policing believe the motive was financial but could not confirm the nature of the relationship between the intended targets and the woman. The incident was brought to the attention of ACT Policing by a UK journalist investigating the dark web. The journalist contacted ACT Policing via email with details of the payment and targets. It is believed the payment occurred in September; ACT Policing became aware of the alleged crime in October

and a search warrant was executed by detectives in a residence in Fadden on Monday 7 December. Detective Acting Sergeant Beth McMullen said it was the first crime of this nature in the ACT, but police had cybercrime specialists and experience in online crime. Police worked with international law enforcement and several partner agencies to track the woman’s online activity and forensically examine her bank records. Detective Acting Sergeant McMullen said the targets were unaware of the situation until it was raised with them by ACT Policing. “The victims were very shocked and understandably concerned.” ACT Policing are continuing to investigate the internet hosts. ACT drivers urged to choose road safety this Christmas Road users are urged to take particular care this summer. Christmas is one of the most dangerous times on Australian roads, authorities say – and more people than ever will be driving these holidays. The Australian Road Safety Foundation launched its annual Christmas awareness campaign at

the Gorman Arts Centre on Friday 4 December, to reduce the number of accidents on the roads. “We’re trying to raise awareness for every single road user to think about the responsibility that comes with being on the road,” ARSF founder and CEO Russell White said. A four-metre-high Christmas tree was unveiled in the courtyard.

Six presents commemorate each of the ACT’s road victims for 2020, and baubles symbolise the most common causes of crashes: driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol; speeding; not wearing a seatbelt; intersections; and driving while distracted. “There are six families who will be feeling pretty bad this Christmas,” Minister for Transport Chris Steel said. “Don’t let this happen to you, or your family, or any other family.” End-of-year exhaustion, increased drivers on unfamiliar roads, and a spike in drink and drug driving particularly contribute to car crashes at Christmas. But this year, the traffic flow will be even heavier, Mr White said. Some people will take long road trips to visit family members they may not have seen for months; others who would have gone overseas will holiday locally instead. “Road trauma at any time of the year is terribly tragic,” Mr White

said. “It’s even worse during a festive season; it would be a very painful annual reminder.” There will be a greater police presence on the roads this summer, Detective Acting Inspector Ivan Naspe said – focused on targeting speeders, driver distractions, and people who drive under the influence. ACT police will work with their NSW colleagues to monitor roads from Canberra to the coast. Mr White encouraged road users to take a pledge to drive safely: always be fit to drive; scan the road ahead; know my limits and plan my trip; stay sharp and take regular breaks; not drive through flooded waters; be alert for wildlife and livestock; and drive to suit the conditions. “We’re asking every single Australian to choose road safety every single day – not just the Christmas period, but 365 days a year,” Mr White said. - Nick Fuller Visit canberraweekly.com.au for more.

news Local travel agents struggling to stay afloat After intensive lobbying from travel agents across the country, the Federal Government last week announced $128 million in cash grants for Australia’s 4,000 travel agents, tour operators and wholesalers and the 40,000 people they employ. Jamison Travel director Michelle Everson said the Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA) and “basically every travel agency in Canberra” lobbied local and federal MPs to secure additional support. Hit incredibly hard by the COVID recession, Mrs Everson said her business went from looking at a good year to operating at a loss. “We’re not down 30% or down 50%, we’re down 130%. Because not only are we not able to sell travel this year, all the travel that we sold last year for this year, we’ve had to refund,” she said. Mrs Everson said JobKeeper was a huge help and she was certain travel agencies would fold without it. Looking to the future, she said the travel industry was lobbying to make sure JobKeeper

or some form of industry specific wage subsidy continued beyond 31 March 2021. She said she was “very, very grateful” for the $128 million worth of one-off payments announced by the Morrison Government on 1 December; however, it wouldn’t be enough long-term. Payments will be scaled, with a minimum payment of $1,500 for a business with a turnover of $50,000 up to a maximum payment of $100,000 for a business with a turnover of $20 million. “It’s not enough to sustain a business; it’s enough to offset some of the costs of running a business,” Mrs Everson said. “So, I think you’re going to see a lot of people leave the market, which is very sad.” With international travel off the table, Mrs Everson said a lot of Canberrans were planning a big motorhome holiday, or to explore part of the country they’d never seen before. Many travellers were heading further afield to WA and the NT. When it came to international destinations,

A safer place to live and a great

she said her team was receiving enquiries, however, they were cautious about lock-in plans. “We can’t really even risk with internal travel in some cases, you know; there’s talk of WA shutting the border, or not opening the border, because of one COVID case in Sydney.” Despite the uncertainty, Mrs Everson said her industry was trying to stay positive. Jazzercise Joan sets the bar at 90 Proving it’s never too late to try something new, Joan Platts decided to pick up exercise classes at the Canberra Seniors Centre when she was 70 years old – and she hasn’t stopped since. First it was a decade of tai chi, followed by a decade of jazzercise. Celebrating her 90th birthday

in early December, Mrs Platts attends three classes at the Centre every week, plus fit ball and aerobics at a gym in Dickson. “Apart from the exercise being wonderful, it’s the social aspect,” she said. She looked around the table of seniors enjoying afternoon tea to

celebrate her birthday on the lawn at the Centre. “See, look at these people – they’re all my friends,” Mrs Platts said. “If you live by yourself, then it’s important to get out and be with people. And people who exercise are wonderful!” Jazzercise instructor Frances Weir said Mrs Platts set the bar for the rest of the class. “I’ll demonstrate some routines and things, just for a bit of fun, and then Joan holds us to task! Don’t come here if you’re tired!” Asked about the secret to a long life, Mrs Platts said to keep moving. “I think you just keep going. Exercise and diet, too. “Eat the right things, a Mediterranean sort of diet. That’s about all you can do.” Classes were cancelled during lockdown in Canberra, and after spending a lot of time alone at home, Mrs Platts said the first class back felt like a reunion.

“Wednesday’s class is a strength class, which is wonderful – we use weights, and not so much dancing in that one.” Mrs Platts said she had two left feet, and that prior to starting jazzercise she’d never taken dance classes. “But the dancing part is good for your brain, because we do quick moves, and just when you’re getting used to one routine, Fran goes and changes it all!” When it came to the playlist, she said modern music wasn’t her favourite. “But it doesn’t matter as long as you have a nice beat to keep to then that’s all you need.” For more information about the Canberra Seniors Centre, visit canberraseniors.org.au, telephone Pat on 6248 9509, or call in at 10 Watson Street, Turner. in the ODI thanks largely to some late hitting from Hardik Pandya, but the Aussies looked in control with Glenn Maxwell at the crease before a late fightback saw India claim a 13-run victory. Despite the loss, Australia claimed the ODI series 2-1. The T20I followed a similar path with the Indians setting a modest total of 161, but the Aussies struggled against some quality bowling and fell 11 runs short. India won the second T20I at the SCG in the final over to claim the three-match series. The attention for Manuka Oval will now turn to the BBL with three matches to be played there on the 11, 12 and 14 December. The crowd will remain capped to 65% capacity or around 6,000 for the fixtures.

Stuart supports Starling Canberra Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has come out in support for hooker Tom Starling, who is accused of assaulting a police officer on the Central Coast over the weekend. “Speaking to Tom, defending his mother and his brother is something that I was obviously okay with,” said Stuart. “If he didn’t jump in to defend his mother and brother, I’d probably be more disappointed in the guy.” Starling has not been stood down by the NRL or Canberra at this stage and will appear at Gosford Local Court on 21 January 2021. In other Raiders news, many of the younger players returned to pre-season this week and were joined by new recruit Ryan James. The 29-year-old put his hand up to train with the youngsters and he has already impressed Stuart. “He’s a good person, Ryan, and he’ll be a great fit to the club.”

Read all about it! Hawker Primary School is holding an end-of-year book sale on Sunday 13 December 10am-2pm at Erldunda Circuit, Hawker. Thousands of books, all genres; Eftpos facilities available; a COVID-safe event.

GIVIT donation of the week: musical instruments After losing their home in the Black Mountain bushfires, a couple relocated to the South Coast a few years ago hoping for a calmer lifestyle, where they could focus on their shared passion – playing music. Both being volunteer firefighters, they worked hard to protect their communities from the devastating fires of last summer. Unfortunately, while out protecting their neighbours’ homes, their own home and contents were completely destroyed. While optimistically focused on rebuilding their lives, for a second time, they deeply miss their passion for music. A local charitable organisation working to support this couple is looking for anyone able to donate musical instruments to these deserving heroes. An alto sax and a steel string acoustic guitar would be their dream instruments, however, they would be incredibly grateful for others such as a clarinet, tenor sax, trumpet, bugle, and other guitars. Donations can be delivered to or posted to the organisation. To donate, visit: givit.org.au/donate-items, search by category “Music and Entertainment” in the area of Bega, NSW to view these requests. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off.

With an immensely challenging year almost behind us, children’s education charity The Smith Family is calling on Australians to band together to ensure that thousands of students living in disadvantage can return to their learning in 2021, with the vital support they need to successfully continue their education journey. With generous support from the public, The Smith Family aims to raise $4.3 million nationally through its annual Christmas Appeal. This will provide 9,086 children with essential learning and mentoring programs to help them stay engaged at school. You can help by: making a donation to help more Australian students access the learning and mentoring programs they need to catch up and keep up at school; purchasing a toy or book through The Smith Family’s online charity gift shop and/or donating a new toy or book; purchasing a Primary School Pack, High School Pack and/ or a Closing the Gap pack to ensure children are equipped to excel in 2021; sponsoring a child through The Smith Family’s Learning for Life program, which provides students with long-term, wrap-around support for their education; or giving back and volunteering your time, skills and energy to support The Smith Family’s life-changing work. Red Hill Primary’s 60th anniversary book The memories of former Red Hill Primary School students and staff have been captured in a special publication to celebrate the Inner South school’s 60th anniversary. Open Hearts, Inquiring Minds records the history of RHPS since it opened in 1960, alongside the memories of pupils, teachers and the parent community of the past six decades. With the school’s plan to celebrate its anniversary with numerous events cancelled due to Covid-19, the Red HIll Primary School P&C decided a special commemorative magazine would be the best way to acknowledge the occasion and preserve the experiences of current and former students and staff. Open Hearts, Inquiring Minds - Celebrating 60 years of Red Hill Primary School is available at the RedHill SupaExpress or by contacting the Red Hill P&C at rhps.pandc@gmail.com; cost is $19, with all proceeds going toward fundraising for the school.

CHRISTMAS IS A TIME FOR GIVING AT COOLEMAN COURT After a difficult year, Cooleman Court is committed to making Christmas even brighter for our wonderful community. Shoppers won’t miss the magnificent Christmas tree in Centre Court, surrounded by a picket fence so you can grab a COVIDsafe photo during your shop. And if the rest of our festive decorations appear pared back, that’s because we’ve diverted a portion of our Christmas fund to two of our favourite charities instead. We chose Communities@Work and OzHarvest because we know they directly support the local people we’re proud to live alongside. As part of our Community Matching Program, we’ll match donations up a total of $2,500 per charity. To help us bring Christmas to people who may otherwise miss out, head down to the tree in Centre Court to donate an unwrapped gift in the red collection box, dedicated to the Communities@Work Christmas Appeal. At our Recycling Hub, all proceeds from 10c bottle and cans are donated to OzHarvest, Australia’s leading food rescue charity, distributing quality surplus food to Canberran families. Together, we will make Christmas brighter for people in our community doing it tough. Head to coolemancourt.com.au for more information.

• A fi rm bladder area is the best indicator of a fresh whole fish. Please note that contact with ice can dull the eyes of whole fish, even when very fresh. • Fresh fish should have a pleasant fresh ocean smell. • Never store fillets in direct contact with ice. Always remove packaging, cover and refrigerate. Cook and eat within two days. The fi rmness of uncooked prawns can be an indicator of freshness. However, some species are naturally softer than others. Uncooked prawns should be stored in a bowl of ice and water, in the fridge. The ice and water should be changed daily. Gingerbread layer cake Recipe courtesy of McKenzie’s Foods. Serves 10-12

Cinnamon cream 300ml thickened cream 200g mascarpone

‘Tis the season Festive fare for the whole family, brought to you by our food writer, Libby Kimber.

Recipe extracted from Vegan Christmas by Audrey Fitzjohn, published by Smith Street Books, RRP $29.99. Photography © Audrey Fitzjohn

Festive fir Serves 6

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Place the olives, capers, artichoke hearts, garlic cloves, lemon juice and basil in a food processor and blend to a fine paste.

2 sheets vegan puff pastry

Spread the olive paste in the shape of a fir tree on one sheet of puff pastry, then place the second sheet on top. Cut out the same tree outline from the pastry. To do this, starting on one side, make horizontal cuts, about 1.5cm from the centre to the outer edges of the pastry, each cut about 1cm apart. Repeat on the other side. Twist each strip 180 degrees, then brush the pastry with soy milk.

2 Tbsp soy milk

Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown.

225g pitted green olives 30g capers, drained and rinsed 60g artichoke hearts, drained 2 garlic cloves Juice of 1/2 lemon Handful of basil leaves

46

canberraweekly.com.au

250g butter, diced and softened

1/4 cup icing sugar mixture, sifted

1 1/4 cups caster sugar

1 tsp McKenzie’s ground cinnamon

2/3 cup golden syrup

Coconut balls

4 extra large eggs

250g plain sweet biscuits

2 3/4 cups plain flour

3/4 cup McKenzie’s desiccated coconut

2 tsp McKenzie’s baking powder

395g can condensed milk

1 tsp McKenzie’s bi-carb soda

1 tsp McKenzie’s ground cinnamon

2 tsp McKenzie’s ground ginger 1 tsp McKenzie’s mixed spice

Extra McKenzie’s desiccated coconut, for rolling

1 1/3 cups warm milk

Rosemary sprigs, for decoration

Pre-heat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Grease and line the base and sides of 2 x 20cm cake pans. Place butter, sugar and golden syrup in the bowl of an electric mixer. Beat until pale and creamy. Add eggs one at a time until well incorporated. Fold in the flour, baking powder, bi-carb and spices, alternately with the milk, until the batter is smooth and well combined. Pour between the prepared pans and bake for 45-50 minutes until golden and an inserted skewer comes out clean. Allow to cool, before removing to a wire rack to cool completely. Once cooled, cut each cake in half, to form four layers. For the cream, beat cream with electric beaters until soft peaks form, add mascarpone, icing sugar and cinnamon, mixing until well combined and mixture has thickened. Refrigerate until required. For the balls, place biscuits in a food processor, pulsing until fine crumbs. Remove to a mixing bowl and stir in the coconut, condensed milk and cinnamon. Mix until well combined. Roll tablespoons of mixture into balls and toss in extra coconut. For assembly, place one layer of cake onto a serving plate, spread with 1/4 of the cinnamon cream, top with another layer of cake, continuing until all layers are stacked, finishing the top with a more decorative swirl of cinnamon cream. Arrange rosemary sprigs upside down into cake and decorate with cinnamon balls. Sprinkle rosemary with extra icing sugar. Serve.

That’s arts and entertainment Radio drama has returned to ArtSound FM, Canberra’s arts and music community radio station, with the addition of ArtSound Radio Theatre. Each 30-minute episode of the 11-part series is being broadcast Sundays at 4pm, featuring one or two short plays, most of them newly written by contemporary playwrights of the Canberra region or sourced from the ArtSound archives. The series runs until 7 February and is hosted by Bill Stephens and local playwright Bart Meehan. Stephens said the aim of the series is to “provide exposure for local playwrights and actors as well as stimulating listening on ArtSound”. “With the disruptions caused by COVID-19, writers and actors have been forced to explore alternative outlets for their talents, so the time is ripe for a renewal of radio theatre, and we are already receiving inquiries from actors and writers interested in participating in the project,” he said. The majority of the plays in the inaugural series are performed by experienced local actors and recorded at the ArtSound studios at the Manuka Arts Centre. Others are from ArtSound archives; and a few feature performances by significant international performers or outof-copyright plays by significant international playwrights, performed by local actors. ArtSound FM broadcasts at 92.7FM, 90.3FM in the Tuggeranong Valley and online at artsound.fm, and via digital radio.

Retrospective exhibition celebrates Australia’s first PM A century after the death of Australia’s first Prime Minister, Sir Edmund Barton, a new exhibition at Australian Parliament House celebrates his life and work. Born in Sydney in 1849, Barton practised as a barrister before entering the New South Wales Legislative Assembly, where he soon became Speaker, and later AttorneyGeneral. His dedication to reinvigorating the Federation cause in the late 1800s earned him the moniker ‘Australia’s noblest son’. In 1903, Barton resigned as Prime Minister to take up the position of Senior Puisne Judge in the inaugural High Court of Australia. For almost 17 years, he interpreted the Constitution he’d helped to write. Sir Edmund remained on the bench until his death at the age of 70. Of particular interest to history buffs, the exhibition includes a photographic portrait of each individual Member of the first Commonwealth Parliament. This large work is rarely on display and provides a fascinating glimpse of the individual MPs who created Australia’s first pieces of legislation. This work accompanies other key items associated with Sir Edmund that have been loaned to Australian Parliament House from a range of institutions, helping to weave together his extraordinary story. Sir Edmund Barton: Australia’s first Prime Minister is open at Australian Parliament House until 14 February 2021. Bookings for the exhibition are essential and can be made via aph.gov.au

time out Now showing The Prom (PG) On Broadway, stage stars Dee Dee Allen (Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (James Corden) receive a scathing review of their new show, stating that the stars are selfobsessed, unlikeable narcissists. In Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan (Jo Ellen Pellman) is banned from attending the prom with her closeted girlfriend Alyssa (Ariana DeBose). The news hits the fallen stars who see Emma’s plight as the perfect PR stunt to get back into the spotlight! Whereas Ellie & Abbie (& Ellie’s Dead Aunt) was a quaint, awkward and sweet examination of asking a girl to a formal, The Prom is unabashedly big and in-your-face with over-the-top performances and extravagant song and dance numbers which celebrate its stage show origins.

The established stars put in gleaned, professional performances, but it is newcomer Pellman who completely steals the show: a young girl who just wants to go to prom with her girlfriend who is terrified of coming out lest she experiences the wrath of the school and her mother (Kerry Washington) – the head of the PTA! The young cast bring a zest and effervescence reminiscent of TV’s Glee, and serve as the heart of the story, giving the older characters something to learn about life, love and the strength needed to be true to oneself. It is a pity then that the songs are uninspired, and the established characters come across as laden. Verdict: A powerhouse effort that wanes when the spotlight drifts from its young stars. 2.5 stars. The Prom is screening at Dendy Cinemas. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

Book talk

Jeff Popple reviews three stunning coffee table books for Christmas. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com To My Country by Ben Lawson Allen & Unwin, $29.99

This gorgeous book will make for a great Christmas present. In the midst of the bushfires earlier this year, Australian actor Ben Lawson, who was stuck overseas, was distressed by the devastation he was witnessing on the news. In response, he wrote To My Country, and when he uploaded a video of himself reading the poem, it went viral. The poem has now been captured in this book and is a moving ode to Australia and a reflection on climate change. The sentiments of the poem are enhanced by some lovely illustrations by Bruce Whatley and proceeds from the book will be generously donated to the Koala Hospital. Recommended.

Extraordinary Old Dogs by Laura Greaves Michael Joseph, $32.99

Also very moving is Laura Greaves’ tribute to old dogs. Too often, old dogs are left at shelters or disposed of when they are seen as being a burden or no longer cute. But no matter how old they are, dogs improve human wellbeing and boost our mental health. They often also contribute to society. In Extraordinary Old Dogs, Laura tells the story of 15 elderly dogs who are doing useful things all around the world, from Brook, who ‘saved the day’, to Haole, who helped change the lives of young children with disability, to Maya the koala detection dog. An uplifting book with great photos.

Confidence in the Kitchen by Emmylou MacCarthy Plum, $39.99

Just in time for the Christmas festivities is TV producer and self-confidence advocate Emmylou MacCarthy’s guide to fun cooking, fashion tips and clever “life hacks”. From ‘kids friendly’ meals, to feeding a crowd with flair, to how to tie a turban head scarf, Emmylou covers all the basics. The recipes are well set out and easy to follow and cover a rich array of styles. Most are also accompanied by useful tips and interesting stories about how Emmylou discovered them. All the recipes look very tempting, especially a great one for apple and berry crumble, and Confidence in the Kitchen is the perfect guide to summer entertaining.

fitness Some tips for managing device time

Time to recharge School is winding up, holidays are knocking on the door and soon many families will have some quality time together to rest and recharge the batteries. Over this holiday period, let’s focus on keeping the exercise up and have some fun with it! And, for our children, let’s try and keep the ‘device time’ to a minimum – good luck! Christmas, New Year and the school holidays are a great time to spend with family and friends and recharge after the year we’ve all had. Make sure you take some time out to

WITH LEE CAMPBELL, CELEBRITY TRAINER, HEALTH & FITNESS PROFESSIONAL BFIRM.COM.AU

rest and relax and take care of your mental health. Now is the time for giving and for caring, so be sure to check up on others, too. Let’s have a look at some fun fitness activities to do with the kids:

• Try to plan device time around meals, that way you can make sure the kids are eating healthy meals and snacks. • Get the kids to teach you new exercises they’ve researched – this way you they stay engaged with you and are learning at the same time. • Keep screen time to 30 minutes, then it’s outdoor time for 10 minutes. • Give the kids a countdown on their time, this gives them a feeling of control and that they won’t be leaving something unfinished. • Swap device time for fresh fruit break time! Make sure everyone stays hydrated, too, with water instead of soft drinks.

Fun family activities

• For every minute of exercise give the kids the same time on the devices, one for one. • Learn new exercises together – get them to teach you! • Put 20 different exercises in a hat and draw them out one at a time - see if you can do one of each. • Enjoy the sunset with the family or get everyone up early to watch the sunrise. • Stretch for 20 minutes, twice a day. • Make time for yourself – take 20 minutes to just sit, relax and recharge. • Encourage the family to take a walk together every day before any device time. If anything, the kids will walk faster than they normally do! • Body weight training: set aside 15 minutes each day to do four movements: push-ups, dips, squats and sit-ups.

Early Settler super stylist Heather King says Christmas tables are all about abundance and treating your loved ones to a visual feast as well as one for the tastebuds.

Your festive table setting, sorted

WITH HOME EDITOR, CASSANDRA POWER

At the end of a tough year, it’s time to embrace the festive season and give our family, friends and ourselves an abundance of love, good cheer and the happy feels. Early Settler super stylist Heather King shares her go-to guide for planning Christmas 2020, with ideas for your festive colour palette, setting the scene, and some simple but superstylish crafty hacks that everyone will love and remember forever. What will Christmas look like? Heather believes this Christmas will bring a strong sense of nostalgia for simpler times with a focus on family, beautiful fresh food, and relaxed outdoor dining. “We’ll see less bling and overthe-top metallic décor, and a greater appreciation for natural fibres and earthy organic shapes,” she says. “This year, Christmas will undoubtedly be a very Australian 52

canberraweekly.com.au

affair and I think this will be reflected in our décor choices which will celebrate the unique colours of our landscape. “Think lots of pale timbers, eucalyptus and sage greens, the warm pinks of proteas, the sunny yellow of wattle and bottlebrushes.” What about the Christmas table? Christmas tables are all about abundance and treating your loved ones to a visual feast as well as one for the tastebuds. Big timber grazing platters loaded with delicious food will set the scene. Tiered food stands take up little table space and can be used for everything from starters to sweets. “A big floral centrepiece is always stunning, but if space is tight, then use small single stem vases dotted along the table – this is a more economical way to dress a large table, too,” Heather says.

Making the most of the great Australian outdoors According to Heather, our cumulative cooped up inside time this year will drive us towards al fresco dining for Christmas eve, lunch, dinner and Boxing Day. “Outdoor dining can be a little more casual and relaxed, so tablecloths are optional as you can use a table runner or placemats instead. “When you need to entertain a big group, bench seats are a great option – and remember comfortable seating is a must for those long lunches, so make sure your seats have pads or add some cushions. “If your outdoor setting is under a pergola, or near some trees, festive garlands can be strung above the table. “I’ll be making a long garland from faux florals to match those on the table as it’s a really beautiful way to

elevate the Christmas scene, as well as being economical if you reuse it next year.” Crafty hack To create a photo-worthy holiday moment, don’t just decorate the tree! Add masses of faux flowers and Christmas decorations to the chairs for the perfect festive photo. It’s simple – all you need are plastic cable ties, scissors and a spare hour or so. The joy is in the details Hang some extra decorations off door handles or hooks in the hallway. Place a little note at everyone’s table place to say what you love or admire about them. Set the scene with a playlist that caters to everyone’s tastes. Exhale, relax, and worry about the dishes tomorrow. This year, we all deserve a fairy tale ending.

Flexible family living Hughes 62 Groom Place 62 Groom Place is a grand, family home offering flexibility and space to suit every buyer’s needs. Comprising two residences, the main three-bedroom home and an adjoining two bedrooms complete with bathroom, kitchenette and living space, the home has potential to earn rental income or be opened up to form a large, five-bedroom family home. Cream Residential principal, Chris Wilson, says the home is just four years old, built to a “very high standard”. “Double-glazed windows, spotted gum floors... the attention to details is superb,” he says. “The ideal buyer would be those looking for somewhere for teenagers or extended family to live in independently. “Or just a larger family needing extra bedroom space.” A knock-down rebuild project, the home boasts high, square set ceilings and a striking, modern kitchen with Quantum Quartz stone bench tops, two Miele wall ovens and a butler’s pantry.

Upstairs, the main bedroom suite boasts a walk-in robe and ensuite and adjoins a family breakout space or sitting area and front and rear balconies. Downstairs is home to a number of living areas including an open-plan kitchen, family and dining space, a separate lounge room and the rumpus room or two-bedroom unit. The alfresco entertaining area looks out over the landscaped, lowmaintenance gardens, with access to the kitchen and dining areas. Wilson says the home sits in a quiet, cul de sac location, “mid-way between Curtin and Hughes shops, closing to playing fields and access roads that lead to Woden and the City”.

Residential property on track to deliver exceptional returns

Vendors remain confident with market conditions

Monthly Home Value Index figures reported by CoreLogic showed increases to values of both units and houses. Collective growth in September, October and November reflected values of units increased by 2.5% and houses 3.5%. These rates annualised show residential property in Canberra is on track to deliver exceptional returns to owners. Property owners are enjoying an environment where interest paid on mortgages is calculated at the lowest rates in history, significantly reducing barriers of entry for investment. Those choosing to invest in residential property have found vacancy rates have remained low throughout 2020. SQM Research figures show vacancy rates peaked at 1.3% in May and are currently sitting at 0.9%. For perspective, this means occupancy rates are 99.1%. This dynamic has been steadily applying upward pressure on asking rents for units, which have increased by 2.4% year-on-year to October 2020. The value of purchasing off-plan is amplified in a market where both property values and rents are rising. Purchasers can lock in a price immediately upon exchange of contracts and secure exposure to the market without the burden of holding costs like having to pay interest, strata levies, rates or land tax until settlement occurs. Across the portfolio of off-plan projects I am working on, interstate investors have been active, however, account for marginal transaction volumes in comparison to local owner occupiers.

In the established market, it is clear vendors remain confident with market conditions. Domain reported on Saturday 5 December the preliminary auction clearance rate was 72% from 72 scheduled auctions. Greater numbers of scheduled auctions have correlated with clearance rates moderating from their peak on 14 November. Individual sales results for properties sold either under the hammer or prior to auction show buyers are comfortable paying what appear to be ambitious figures, including many new suburb records.

WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST

I anticipate demand from buyers seeking to receive the $25,000 HomeBuilder Grant will continue right up until the end of 2020, inevitably resulting in some purchasers costing themselves $10,000 because they were unable to act decisively. Every day of decision delay makes it increasingly challenging to exchange contracts by the deadline to qualify, placing an enormous amount of pressure on professionals working in this space to deliver required outcomes in very compressed timeframes.

Older renters struggling during COVID-19 Older renters across the country are struggling with financial pressures and social isolation, according to new data analysis from the Australian Housing and Urban Research Institute (AHURI). Western Sydney University’s Emma Power said the pandemic has exacerbated affordability issues in the housing system for older renters on very low incomes. “People unable to afford basic essential expenses like food are likely to experience health and wellbeing costs and be more dependent on charities like local foodbanks to make ends meet,” Dr Power said. “Inability to afford the costs of social activities can lead to a loss of social connections and negatively impact wellbeing.” Executive director of renting advocacy group Better Renting, Joel Dignam, says older renters on the Age Pension – which was not eligible for the

coronavirus supplement, only the economic support payments – are under a lot of pressure in the ACT’s expensive rental market. Mr Dignam said people who are struggling with the cost of rent, bills and food would be less likely to be socially active. As well, older renters might cut back on energy usage, which could have health implications. The ACT Council of Social Service (ACTCOSS) CEO, Emma Campbell, said there needs to be more investment in affordable public and community housing from both the ACT and Federal Government, as well as design standards that would see houses adaptable for people with disability and good quality public transport so people can remain connected to their communities. A home amongst the gardens Yarralumla 87 Schlich Street Nestled among fairy-tale gardens, this home is a picture perfect 1950s cottage that’s bursting with character and charm. LJ Hooker sales and marketing consultant, Naish Stormon, says the home has been beautifully maintained since it was built in 1957, with upgrades to the kitchen and the bathrooms.

“The gardens are amazing and are the result of 30 years of meticulous and thoughtful work,” he says. “They feature a paved walk which winds through the gardens and tempts the walker with gazebos and shady nooks to stop and meditate on the superb surrounds.” Mr Stormon says 87 Schlich Street would be the perfect new home for a

number of different buyers, including families, couples and downsizers. “A small family; downsizers who are looking for a superb location and quality of life to enjoy in retirement; a professional couple looking for a safe, serene, spiritually uplifting home to rest in and let the stresses of the day melt away; or someone looking to knock it down and build their dream home in a wonderful location.” The home boasts 130sqm of living space, with a separate 52sqm studio with hardwood flooring. Features of this unique home include a spa bath, induction cooker and dishwasher, as well as character-filled living spaces. “It is Yarralumla!” says Mr Stormon

Loved ones who are hoping to extract some cash from you are in for a hard time this month; you are into saving and are certainly not keen to part with your hardearned finances. The New Moon on 14 December is the ideal time for sorting out money matters.

Freelancers should do extremely well as contacts will be in touch with opportunities they think are ideal for you. The New Moon on 14 December seems to indicate that wherever you go, people are only too happy to see you and to help you however they can.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

When it comes to socializing, you are going to opt for simple pleasures. The New Moon on 14 December indicates that sage advice will be forthcoming from female members of the family. Providing you listen to them, you will find that their words are full of wisdom.

Those of you who are self-employed, freelancers or managers will find life a good deal less complicated and others far more cooperative than usual. The New Moon on 14 December is the ideal time for making changes, whether it’s a new health regime, new look or new friends.

Many Pisceans will be signing contracts or be provided with the chance to travel for professional matters. The New Moon on 14 December is the ideal time to look for advantageous moves at work. A good sense of timing and an enterprising spirit will help you make progress.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY The New Moon on 14 December indicates that other people are going to be lucky for you, opening horizons that you had not even considered. Financially you can afford to spoil yourself and someone close. This is the ideal time for sorting out official matters.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE With the Sun in Sagittarius, there will be many changes, developments and adjustments to adapt to with loved ones and at work. Rivals and competitors may be busy, but you’ll be one step ahead of them! The New Moon on 14 December is the ideal time for mixing business with pleasure.
