thursday 24 december 2020
This week... From the editor Greetings dear readers, How are you travelling? As we approach the butt end of 2020, I’m pausing to reflect on the lessons and positives I can take from this “unprecedented year”. Firstly, 2020 reminded me not to take anything for granted. Nothing. From having enough chickpeas in the pantry to the preciousness of life itself, nothing is guaranteed. Not even taxes this year! Secondly, have at least one spare roll of loo paper on hand. People can behave in strange ways when a global pandemic is declared. People can also be exceptionally kind and generous, offering to help neighbours or vulnerable people they’ve never met before. Thirdly, I’m grateful for having been able to do #iso with loved ones. We’ve been fortunate here (touch wood) to have avoided the harsh lockdowns experienced in other places, so I’m aware our “iso” was very mild. As this is our last edition of 2020, may I thank you, our readers and advertisers, for your continued support. And if you’re new to Canberra Weekly, welcome aboard! If you’re after more content over the break, including limitless puzzles, check out canberraweekly.com.au May your New Year be filled with kindness, joy, love and generosity. Will it be better than 2020? In the immortal words of my adored late brother, Tony, who died in June: “too soon to tell”.

news Teenage hackers use their skills for good, combat cyber-crime
Lake Tuggeranong College students Dylan Soesman (left) and Kyle Price (right) did a deep dive on cyber-crime in 2020, first learning how to hack. Image: Kerrie Brewer.
With one in three Australian adults impacted by cyber-crime in 2019, Services Australia Cyber Services general manager Tim Spackman says the demand for skilled cyber security professionals in Australia is growing exponentially. “The threat landscape is constantly evolving so we need tomorrow’s brightest and best minds to join the fight so we can all have safe and positive experiences online,” he says. That’s why Lake Tuggeranong College students Kyle Price and Dylan Soesman were two of five aspiring information security gurus taken under the wing of experts within the Services Australia Cyber Security Division for work experience in 2020. Mr Spackman’s division is responsible for defending critical IT systems for services such as Centrelink and Medicare, containing the private information of 26 million Australians. This includes protecting $190 billion in welfare payments and 280,000 authentications each day. In order to defend, first learn how to attack To learn how to defend systems against hackers, students must first learn how to hack, something Lake Tuggeranong teacher Graham Cassells starts in the classroom. 6
canberraweekly.com.au
Two of his best students, Mr Soesman has been interested in IT since he was three, and Mr Price is newer to the subject and a fast learner. “I think we would hope that none of the things we can do in here would be possible in the real world,” Mr Cassells says. He offers an analogy for anybody unfamiliar with what a cyber-attack involves. “This is your house, then you’ve got a little letterbox in the front door,” he says. “These guys can reach in, and they can find whatever they want inside your house and pull it out.” According to Mr Soesman, all the hacking techniques they learn work on the same fundamental premise. “Essentially, just making the server run code that it shouldn’t be running.” Both young men learnt a lot about the inner workings of national cyber security operations during their work experience, and Mr Soesman says “it only just scratched the surface”. In a class project on cyber warfare, Mr Cassels asks his students to put those concepts into practice. A Lego replica of Canberra including Parliament House, Telstra
Tower and ActewAGL provides the setting to explore what the catastrophic consequences would be if the security of local infrastructure were compromised during a cyberattack. “It’s like an adventure game but it’s got some hard technical skill to break into things – break into wireless, radio, websites, traffic lights – things that you can actuate a change,” Mr Cassels says. “And if you take down Telstra Tower, if you take down all the comms systems, how does society work without communications? It just disintegrates on itself; it goes into anarchy really quickly.” Leaving a legacy Using their skills for good in their own time, the pair built a cyber security training package to help students in regional or remote areas – with little to no knowledge on the topic – teach themselves how to hack. Mr Soesman says a lot of schools in those areas have very little technology and it is often outdated. “So we wanted it to be able to run on that [older laptops] so that those kids who would normally have no experience will be able to do this thing, which actually not many people know about and not many people can do,” he says. Even if their teacher is unfamiliar with the techniques taught in the training package, Mr Price says it was designed in such a way that students will be able to self-direct their learning. “It’s kind of like a choose your own adventure,” he says. “There are end goals, kind of, but they can go about doing it any way they want – we just show them the basics of how to do it.” Mr Soesman says there are “millions of attacks daily” on government sites as well as private institutions like banks, and individual home computers. “As we become more reliant on technology, it becomes a much more enticing target for people to attack,
which makes it more important to know about security,” he says. “Not everyone has to be an expert in security things but everyone needs to know the basics at least, know what the threats are, so they can protect themselves against it.” More experts needed According to the Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC), one in three Australian adults were impacted by cyber-crime in 2019. On average, the ACSC’s ReportCyber tool received a report every 10 minutes. Services Australia’s Mr Spackman says it is hard to see those statistics improving in the shortterm. “This is why it’s so important that people understand some of the basic ways they can improve their personal cyber security,” he says. “Sharing personal information on social media, for example, is a big problem and I strongly encourage people to consider what they post online.” Mr Spackman says information security is an exciting and dynamic type of work that needs an influx of enthusiastic graduates. “Strong technical controls are important but without skilled and motivated people it’s impossible to have an effective cyber operation.” “A holistic approach is crucial – we have forensics and intelligence capabilities, we constantly test our systems, we stay on top of the latest technology and engage with our workforce to increase cyber awareness.” Mr Soesman, who is set to continue exploring this passion at university in 2021, says the most exciting thing about cyber-security is the challenge it faces. “There’s a lot of problem solving involved, which I find really fun.” - Rosa Ritchie Find an extended version of this story and more like this about the Class of 2020 online at canberraweekly.com.au

news New drug from ANU combats sepsis, set to save millions of lives Medical scientists are excited about a promising new treatment for sepsis – one of the biggest killers globally – announced today after more than a decade of research by ANU Professor Christopher Parish and his team. Professor Parish said there is a huge medical need for a treatment for sepsis. “It is surprising how many people die from sepsis and the

medical profession hasn’t yet found a treatment,” he said. “If this drug works as predicted, it should be a game changer in treating sepsis – one of the biggest challenges in 21st century medicine. “We hope that we can now treat the untreatable.” Eleven million people around the world die due to sepsis each year – that’s almost 20% of all global deaths, according to The World Health Organization (WHO). And in Australia, at least 5,000 people die of sepsis annually, meaning the burden of death from sepsis is greater than the annual national road toll and sepsis causes more deaths than breast or prostate cancer, according to the Australian Sepsis Network. Sepsis is a dangerous response
to many infections, including COVID-19, and it is often fatal. “Sepsis occurs when pathogens – usually bacteria but sometimes viruses – get out of control and the immune system tries to control them but overdoes the job and causes massive collateral damage,” Professor Parish said. The drug was developed from compounds originally designed to fight cancer, and Professor Parish said the new medicine was “very safe”. “Our drug stops patients from feeling very sick due to this uncontrolled collateral damage, a process that can result in multiorgan failure and death.” Arriving with considerably good timing, researchers said their new drug may help some people with COVID-19 – particularly patients whose
lungs are affected by sepsis-like symptoms. “We have spent 10 years developing this drug to treat sepsis and although not planned, we predict it may have some activity against COVID-19,” Professor Parish said. “But sepsis will be here long after we control COVID-19 – because it can come in all shapes and forms and a lot of pathogens can induce it.” Having passed phase one clinical trials in healthy volunteers, the drug has moved on to the next test, another phase one trial in sepsis patients. It was initially developed onsite at ANU, with further input coming from Griffith University Professor Mark von Itzstein AO and researcher Dr Chih-Wei Chang.

news Canberra Symphony Orchestra (CSO) artistic director and chief conductor Nicholas Milton announced at the 2020 season launch that this would be his last year in the role after a fruitful 15 years. The disrupted nature of 2020 has meant Milton hasn’t been able to say goodbye in the way he would have liked due to other commitments keeping him in Europe. CW spoke with Milton as his tenure reaches its conclusion. How has the CSO changed over the past 15 years? When I first worked with the CSO as a guest conductor in 1999, the orchestra already possessed a unique performance and aesthetic culture. The CSO had benefited immeasurably from the unparalleled dedication of my distinguished predecessors … most notably, Leonard Dommett, the legendary Ernest Lllewellyn, and, most recently, the inimitable Richard Gill. A conductor is constantly inspired, challenged, motivated and driven (only occasionally to madness) by the musicians with whom we are privileged enough to share a stage. I could never deeply enough express my sincerest thanks to the

musicians of the CSO – past and present – who trusted me and inspired me with their artistry, passion, dedication and musical integrity. What is your proudest achievement during your tenure? I am particularly proud that the CSO has, especially over these last 15 years, provided a wealth of performance opportunities to many outstanding Australian artists, both emerging and established. Equally central has been our commitment to the creation and celebration of Australian music. Curated during my tenure by my dear friend Professor Matthew Hindson AM, our Australian Series is a truly remarkable, successful initiative in the national orchestral landscape. What prompted your decision to move on? I just sensed a couple of years back that it would be the right time to conclude this chapter at the end of 2020. As things have developed with my career in Europe, as well as with the availability of my wonderful colleagues Jessica Cottis and Simon Hewett to work in Canberra from next season – it turned out to be a good decision.

Take 5 with Nicholas Milton
Will you continue to be involved with the CSO? No, not at all – a new artistic direction team should be given the courtesy of a clean slate to reinvent, redirect, and refocus the orchestra to explore its limitless potential. How will you reflect on your time at the CSO? I have had so many memorable performance experiences with the orchestra … But the most special memories are the closed concerts we presented for school-aged children, including performances designed for children with special needs. The joy in the eyes of those young people and the moving conversations I had with teachers will stay with me. Some questions and Nicholas Milton’s answers have been condensed for publication.

DFAT celebrates exporters
NYE across the city The usual New Year fireworks and concert in the city have been cancelled – but the ACT will still do its best to end the year with a bang, rather than the whimper that 2020 has been for many. Three nights of music, lights and food across Canberra from Tuesday 29 to Thursday 31 December will bid farewell to a difficult year. “This is the perfect year to make plans at your favourite local restaurant, support local business, catch some great live performances, and say ‘see ya later’ to 2020 in style,” Tara Cheyne MLA, Minister for the Arts and for Business, said. New Year’s Eve across the City will create a celebratory atmosphere at Lathlain Street in Belconnen; Anketell Street in Tuggeranong; Bradley Street in Woden; Hibberson Street in Gungahlin; Lonsdale Street in Braddon; Northbourne Avenue in
the City. Each night, local performers and musicians will provide buskerstyle street performances from 5.30pm to 9.30pm. Colourful lights will shine brightly on iconic Canberran attractions, including the Telstra Tower, Questacon, Royal Australian Mint, Belconnen Arts Centre, the Canberra Times Fountain, and the National Carillion from 9pm to midnight. “New Year’s Eve across the City will be focused on keeping our community safe, while we support our local hospitality, arts and entertainment sectors,” Ms Cheyne said. “By supporting one local business, you are supporting many more, including local producers, their suppliers and regional growers.” Plan your New Year’s Eve feasting celebrations at events.act.gov.au/nye.
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) showed its support for Canberra region businesses as a gold sponsor of the 2020 ACT Chief Minister’s Export Awards. Delivered by the Canberra Business Chamber, this year’s awards celebrated Canberra exporters’ innovation and resilience. DFAT welcomes the great stories ACT businesses have to tell about their successes such as QuintessenceLabs, Mineral Carbonation International, the Mullion Group and Geospatical Intelligence, to name a few. Supporting business and Australia’s economic recovery from COVID-19 is a priority for DFAT. The Department is: advocating internationally for open, rules-based trade and investment; increasing and expanding global market access opportunities through their network of trade agreements and strategic
relationships; and engaging with Australian business to help them navigate international market disruptions, including by providing market intelligence from the diplomatic network. DFAT manages Australia’s diplomatic network of 120 posts in 84 countries and supporting business is a key priority. DFAT, alongside Austrade, is committed to helping Australian businesses succeed in their overseas commercial endeavours. DFAT works with colleagues from Austrade and other agencies, has published new Market Insights, as a resource for Australian business, with market intelligence showcased through a webinar series from 17 December. HomeGround looks to expand After a year when supporting the community has never been more important, HomeGround Real Estate Canberra is looking to the future with plans to expand their service.

ooking toward 2021, HomeGround Real Estate Canberra is looking to grow their ethical agency, which has been positively impacting the lives of tenants and rewarding landlords with both a sound investment and knowledge that simply by having their rental property managed by HomeGround they are helping out someone in the community. HomeGround offers property management services for both affordable and market rental options, and Business Development Manager Maria Edwards says the success of the agency comes down to shared values between Homeground landlords and their tenants, especially in a year like 2020 that has presented lots of challenges for everyone. “It’s very much about mutual respect and appreciation – our landlords in the Land Tax Exemption program particularly acknowledge the shortage of affordable rental properties available in the ACT for single income families, older people and students and want to help. Our tenants are

so grateful for the opportunity and repay the landlords’ generosity in the way they look after their properties and always pay their rent on time,” Ms Edwards says. Landlords can elect to rent out their property at a reduced rate to someone in need and receive a 100% exemption from their land tax, a tax donation receipt for foregone rent and a discount on Capital Gains Tax. If they prefer to rent it out for market value, the management fees are directed back into Community Housing Canberra (CHC), under which HomeGround operates. “We want to get more landlords on board so that we can build on what we’ve already
“I wanted to get involved in an affordable housing scheme; affordable living options are really important, particularly at the moment and many out there are struggling … What drew me to HomeGround in the end was the wonderful service, the breadth of information and knowledge that Maria shared and how responsive the agency is. I purchased the house as both an investment but also to help someone out. I couldn’t be happier with my choice! HomeGround’s unique offering as the only licensed real estate agency in the ACT to offer the Land Tax Exemption option combines CHC’s 20 years of managing affordable rental properties with the proven local real estate expertise of Ms Edwards, who has remained at the agency since launch. “Landlords and tenants alike have enjoyed the consistency. Because we are small and boutique, we offer a really personalised service,” she says. “It is hard for me to find the words to describe how much our lives have changed since being tenants of HomeGround Real Estate Canberra … With study and having a young family, money can be tight. With HomeGround, we feel that both our property manager and landlord genuinely have our best interests at heart and all parties have just been wonderful. Previous homes we have lived in we have had issues getting repairs made, but HomeGround is very easy, responsive and things are turned around quickly. We have been tenants with HomeGround now over a year and it is just so good!” - Lucy Buckmaster, tenant

news Canberrans describe their 2020: the good, the bad and the brutal It’s been called ‘a year like no other’. So, we asked Canberrans to tell us about their 2020; their plans and how they adapted to change. What skills they may have picked up or what personal challenges they’ve had to overcome. As we as a community move beyond this year of isolation and allow ourselves to look forward to 2021, we reflect that everyone has a story of their 2020. Jessica Kremp After being stuck indoors at the beginning of 2020 due to bushfire smoke, Jessica decided to make a big effort to take the kids to the park and have more picnics. But then the pandemic hit and as a public transport user, Jessica and her family did not get to those outings or any family outings. Rather than holding her back,
Jessica Kremp’s two children didn’t get their family outing this year.
Jessica found a new way of being at home, beginning to feel more comfortable in her own space. “Hands downs, I was so disappointed we were unable to have family gatherings as often,” she said. “But the kindness shown from stranger to stranger was the best thing, from offers to check-in on neighbours to the willingness of others to share toilet paper.”
“These last two years my family and myself have gone through more than most people do in a lifetime and I’m looking forward to a new start.” - JD
Jacquelene Diamond Jacquelene didn’t have a huge amount planned for 2020 but ended up coming out of it with a lot. Her year changed drastically when her mum got sick during her Year 12. “I’m disappointed I couldn’t do more,” she said. “I spent most of the year studying and looking after my mum, up until the day she passed away.” Jacquelene said she was surprised about how quickly we recovered from COVID and she feels like she picks up new skills every day. “I feel like I use my new skills to grow without even knowing it,” she said. “I don’t think I picked up any bad habits. I’m looking forward to starting my life after high school in 2021. “These last two years, my family and myself have gone through more than most people do in a lifetime and I’m looking forward to a new start.” Kavina Ettingah Kavina had planned to travel for a long period to various places in Europe to escape the pain of miscarriage. “We thought our dream of having a child was simply that, a dream,” Kavina said. “Our plans changed in January 2020 when

we found out I was pregnant.” Kavina was a bit disappointed with the way the pandemic impacted her pregnancy. No congratulatory hugs, no sharing the ultrasound experience with her husband, and her overseas parents and siblings unable to attend the birth and unlikely to meet baby before his first birthday. The acts of kindness surprised her the most during the pandemic; including being waved to the front of the line at the shops. “I saw people pay for other people’s groceries and heard new ways people were connecting online and was intrigued by the hobbies people started doing.” Kavina picked up new cooking skills and began “super organising” the house into a rainbow-colour-coded happy place thanks to binge watching The Home Edit. “In 2021, I am looking forward most to watching my son have his first year of life. sport Giants to return to Manuka Oval early in 2021 After missing out on any AFL games for premiership points in 2020, Manuka Oval will again play host to three GWS Giants matches in 2021, including a Friday night blockbuster. The action is set to return early in the season with the Giants to play the Melbourne Demons in round 3 on Sunday 4 April 7.10pm. The bright lights of Friday night footy will again shine on Manuka Oval as the Western Bulldogs come to town to reignite their rivalry with the Giants in round 6 on Friday 23 April 8.20pm. The Giants’ final game in Canberra for 2021 will be against the Port Adelaide in round 20 with the date to be determined later as the AFL adopt a floating fixture for this season. The Giants will face reigning premiers Richmond twice, along with the Melbourne Demons, Carlton
Blues, Essendon Bombers and crosstown rivals the Sydney Swans, as they look to return to the finals. The Giants are coming off a disappointing 2020 campaign that saw them miss the finals for the first time since 2015. They also endured a tough offseason in which they lost the club’s leading goal kicker Jeremy Cameron to the Geelong Cats and star halfback/ midfielder Zac Williams to the Carlton Blues. The Giants did, however, pick up some young talent at the 2020 AFL Draft with Tanner Bruhn, Conor Stone and Ryan Angwin all joining the club as first-round picks. Manuka Oval will also host a preseason match between the Giants and Essendon Bombers on Friday 5 March 7.40pm. - Vincent Samaras
At a glance 2,000 allowed for Canberra Carnival In some good news for racing enthusiasts, the Canberra Racing Club has announced that crowds of up to 2,000 will be permitted for both days of the 2021 Canberra Carnival in March. The Carnival will be held on the Canberra Day long weekend and will feature the John McGrath Auto Group Black Opal Stakes Day on Sunday 7 March and TAB Canberra Cup Day on Monday 8 March. These will be the biggest crowds at Thoroughbred Park since this year’s Canberra Carnival which saw 10,000 through the gates across the two days. Tickets are expected to be in high demand with a members only booking period from 21 December before bookings open to the general public on 14 January 2021. The Club will continue to work diligently with the ACT Government as restrictions change.

Caps bow out in semi-final The UC Capitals’ quest for a third straight WNBL title has fallen short after losing their knockout semi-final to the Melbourne Boomers 68-78 in Townsville on Wednesday 16 December. The Caps fell behind by 16 points in the second quarter before rallying to get the margin back to within three in the third. However, the Boomers regrouped and proved too strong for a courageous Caps side. Brittany Smart led the scoring for the Caps with 15 points while Maddison Rocci continued her strong season with 14 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists.
Cavs season opener on ice The Canberra Cavalry did not travel to Perth for its Opening Weekend series against the Perth Heat as a result of the recent COVID outbreak in Sydney’s Northern Beaches. Over 90% of the Cavalry squad would have been forced to quarantine for two weeks in WA as many of the travelling group reside in NSW, have recently been in NSW and/ or have been in contact with individuals from NSW. This means the series between the sides has been suspended until further notice, with the ABL to provide an update on scheduling and competition points soon. The Cavs next scheduled match is against the Melbourne Aces at MIT Narrabundah Ballpark on Saturday night 26 December. More info: canberracavalry.com.au

GIVIT donation of the week: air conditioning units A local crisis accommodation supporting women and children escaping domestic and family violence is in urgent need of relief from the summer heat. The facility houses up to 30 women, plus six additional families of women with children. This is a place of refuge, safety and a fresh start for these women who have overcome immense challenges in escaping life-threatening situations. Many of them arrive at the crisis accommodation with only the clothing on their backs and a great deal of courage in their hearts. The organisation supports the women with three meals a day, a comfortable place to sleep and access to support services so they may begin to create a new life. With a very limited budget, the organisation is looking for a local donation of air conditioning units to outfit the common spaces, lounge, dining and meeting room. Creating a more comfortable space for the women to connect, rest and recharge is vital for their safety and development. Any donation of room cooling units will make a world of difference to these women’s lives. Donations can be collected by the organisation. To donate, visit givit.org.au/donate-items, search by category “Air Conditioning” in your local area to view the organisation’s requests. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off.

Summer salads Cool down this summer with a delicious, fruity salad, brought to you by our food writer Libby Kimber.
Blackberry kale salad with fried halloumi Recipe and image by Megann Evans for Fresh Aussie Berries. Serves 6 Blackberry kale salad
Meg’s chilli chive mayonnaise
1 small bunch kale, stems removed and leaves cut into ribbons or torn finely
3 egg yolks
1/2 small head red cabbage, thinly sliced 1/4 red onion, very finely sliced 1/3 cup Meg’s chilli chive mayonnaise 1 Tbsp toasted pumpkin and/or sunflower seeds for sprinkling 1 packet of firm halloumi 1 Tbsp olive oil 1 punnet of fresh blackberries
1 1/2 tsp Dijon mustard 250-300ml grapeseed or canola oil (must be light flavoured) 3 tsp white vinegar 2 tsp honey 2 tsp fresh lemon juice, or to taste 1 tsp finely chopped red chilli 1/4 tsp dried cayenne pepper 1 Tbsp chopped chives Salt and freshly ground white pepper
For the mayonnaise, place the yolks and mustard in a food processor and blend until the ingredients are light and creamy. While blending, gradually add about half the oil in a slow steady stream until thick and pale in consistency. Once half of the oil is combined, add the vinegar – this will loosen the mixture slightly and give it a paler colour. Continue to gradually add the remaining oil. Towards the end add the flavouring highlights – honey, fresh lemon juice (or to taste), finely chopped red chilli, cayenne pepper and chopped chives. Season with a generous pinch of salt, a small dash of white pepper and if needed, a little more vinegar. Blend until well mixed. For the salad, place all salad ingredients in a big bowl – kale, cabbage, onion and chilli chive mayonnaise. Toss well. Gently toast your seeds in a pan over medium heat, continuously tossing until golden. Slice the halloumi to 1cm thick pieces, add some olive oil to the pan and gently cook for 3 minutes on both sides or until golden brown. Top salad with fried halloumi, fresh blackberries and a good sprinkle of seeds.

Avocado salad with macadamia pesto Recipe by Luke Hines for Australian Avocados. Serves 4 2 Shepard avocados, halved 1 Lebanese cucumber, halved lengthways and thinly sliced diagonally 2 radishes, thinly sliced 120g (2 cups) alfalfa sprouts 3 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 3 Tbsp macadamia nuts, toasted Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper

To serve, place a spoonful or two of the pesto in the centre of each serving plate and spread it out a little with the back of the spoon. (Any leftover pesto will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week and makes a great dip for roasted veg or a topping for pizzas.)
stalks roughly chopped 1 bunch coriander or mint leaves 125ml (1/2 cup) extra-virgin olive oil 3 Tbsp macadamia nuts Zest and juice of 1 lemon 1 Tbsp apple cider vinegar 1 tsp chilli flakes Generous pinch of sea salt
Thinly slice the avocado halves and arrange them evenly over the pesto.
Green bean salad with tahini
Serves 4 400g fine green beans 2 preserved lemons 1 fat garlic clove, minced Generous squeeze of lemon juice 1 Tbsp tahini 3 Tbsp warm water Handful of pine nuts Freshly ground black pepper
Cook the green beans in a saucepan of boiling water for about 10–12 minutes, or according to the packet instructions – the timing will vary depending on their variety and thickness. Drain and rinse under cold running water until cool, then drain well and dry on kitchen paper.
Season well with salt and pepper and enjoy.
Cut the preserved lemons in half and thinly slice them into half moons. Set aside.
Extended Trading Hours!
Put the garlic into a small bowl with the lemon juice. Add the tahini and then mix in the warm water to loosen the mixture – don’t use cold water, or the mixture will seize. Place the green beans in a mixing bowl and pour the dressing over. Add the preserved lemon slices and season with a generous amount of pepper, then transfer to a plate and scatter with the pine nuts before serving.

A Bookshop in Wartime by Jenny Horsfield Arcadia, $34.95
Also with a Canberra connection is A Bookshop in Wartime by Jenny Horsfield. This charming and interesting book chronicles the establishment of one of Canberra’s first bookshops, by the colourful Verity Hewitt. When Verity Hewitt’s Bookshop opened in the Sydney Building in April 1938, Canberra was little more than a country town. That was to quickly change with the coming of the Second World War, which brought more public servants and soldiers, and saw the city expand. The bookshop also grew and became a meeting place for booklovers and influential governmental and diplomatic figures. A fascinating glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman and the changing face of Canberra.

Barker’s latest novel is another exceptional read, with a captivating, maritime plot set against a highly creative dark fantasy setting. Readers will be enthralled by this terrific novel, which is one of the best fantasy books of 2020.

Now showing Dreamland (MA15+) Via narration, we flashback to the Great Depression in a small Texas town, where Phoebe Evans (voiced by Lola Kirke) recounts the story of her family and the desperate town they live in; a barren land vulnerable to dust storms with banks chasing the local farmers. Phoebe recalls her naïve, daydreaming brother Eugene (Finn Cole), who loves reading detective comics. One day, Eugene goes to the family’s disused tractor barn to find a gorgeous, but wounded criminal on the run, Allison Wells (Margot Robbie). The movie employs a gritty, retrospective photographic quality to evoke Eugene’s impression of Mexico, a place his father has escaped to years before. It is this ‘dreamland’ that Eugene escapes to away from this unforgiving land in a town with no future. The
seductress Allison is straight out of one of Eugene’s comic books; a wounded and vulnerable femme fatale who needs Eugene’s help to survive and who also serves as his impetus to finally make the trek to Mexico. The cinematography is fantastic, capturing apocalyptic visions of sandstorms enveloping a town on its last legs. Australian Travis Fimmel plays a tough cop, but extremely sympathetic stepfather who must raise the rebellious Eugene while also hunting-down the dangerous criminal hiding out in his town. Verdict: A great performance from Robbie using her Harley Quinn ‘dame’ accent, the movie is little more than a coming-of-age retread of the Bonnie and Clyde story. 3 stars. Dreamland is now showing at Dendy cinemas. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

New Zealand High Commissioner in Canberra Dame Annette King: “It has been said that no two countries on earth are closer or as well connected.”
Step inside: official Residence of New Zealand
WITH HOME EDITOR, CASSANDRA POWER
Originally from Wellington, New Zealand High Commissioner Dame Annette King is used to grand political buildings, none the less she is loving life in Canberra with her husband Ray.
Just before lockdown, the couple even added their own “Australian baby” to the family, a Goulburnborn sheepadoodle pup named Freddy. Dame Annette said Freddy is an “absolute character”.
The official residence of New Zealand in Canberra was built in 1939, purchased in 1943 and substantially rebuilt in 1985-86.
“He’s been an absolute godsend during the lockdown … for exercise and for entertainment,” she said. Dame Annette expressed gratitude for “lockdown life” in the beautiful official residence of the New Zealand High Commission. “We’ve had a hard year – all of us – but my husband and I have been really fortunate,” she said. “We’ve had these wonderful grounds in this house to spread out. He can be in one part of the house and I can be in another and we don’t have to see each other for the day.” Built in 1939, purchased in 1943 and substantially rebuilt in 1985-86, the residence lies within Canberra’s diplomatic-laden suburb of Red Hill, retaining its original charm and in harmony
with the area’s early architecture. During renovations, care was taken to foster a New Zealand identity, adding NZ carpet and lighting, and paintings, ceramics and Maori weavings from the New Zealand Government’s collection. With such credentials as Deputy Leader of New Zealand (20142017) and Deputy Leader of the Opposition (2008-2011), Dame Annette is a safe pair of hands for New Zealand’s diplomatic interests with their only formal ally and historic trading partner. Dame Annette said the New Zealand colony considered joining with Australia in federation in 1901. “We were in the discussions about becoming a state of Australia,” she said. (continued p34)

The residence features NZ carpet and lighting, and artworks from the New Zealand Government’s collection.
“While we decided we wouldn’t, we went on a path of working closer together.” In the two years so far of Dame Annette’s posting, the two countries have repeatedly been each other’s first point of call, in an unfortunate number of crises. “The Christchurch terrorist attack had an immediate response of help from Australia,” she said. “Australian police officers already in Christchurch for training responded to the scene.” New Zealand’s White Island
volcano explosion in December 2019 received a swift Australian response, whose aid was returned by New Zealand’s firefighters and defence personnel during the Black Summer bushfires. “We know how to immediately respond to each other’s needs,” Dame Annette said. “That’s the strength of relationship. We don’t always agree with each other, but we know how to disagree respectfully.” A point of difference may be New Zealand’s cultural acceptance of female political leadership.
Dame Annette has appreciated spending “lockdown life” in the spacious grounds and residence.
Dame Annette said Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern being their third female leader was “not unusual or unexpected”, although “it certainly was” before their first. She said the 1996 change of voting system was a factor in their diversification of political representation. “It had always been a mainly older white man’s parliament. Women and ethnic diversity were underrepresented. We still have a way to go on inclusion and diversity, but our parliament is now made up
of 47% women, with a diverse range of Maori and Pacific Islanders.” While Dame Annette misses her friends at home, she is content in Canberra and focused on work. “It has been said that no two countries on earth are closer or as well connected,” she said. “By working together, we have strength. Neither of us are world powers, but do we have soft power. And we know we need each other.” For more from New Zealand and other embassies, visit canberraweekly.com.au.

“It’s perfect for water skiing, fishing, paddle boarding, kayaking and boating.” The house takes in the views from every window, and boasts luxury features including open plan living, high, vaulted ceilings, hardwood floors, a Cheminees Philippe fireplace and a stylish, luxury kitchen with butler’s pantry. The large main bedroom suite includes a walk-in robe and ensuite with a bath to soak in the views, while the remaining two bedrooms have built-in robes, serviced by the main bathroom with separate toilet. All three bedrooms include a built-in desk. Outside, the paved terrace takes in the lush surroundings and stunning water views and provides the perfect outdoor entertaining space. Another entertaining space
down by the water’s edge includes a fireplace, and means there’s myriad options for the perfect summer evening spent with family and friends. Pryde says Sandy Point is around seven minutes’ drive from the historic town of Milton, and just 10 minutes via car to Mollymook Beach, making it the perfect coastal escape.

Weekly market wrap 2020 finishes strong On Saturday 19 December, Domain reported that Canberra had recorded a preliminary auction clearance rate of 85%. This was the second week for Canberra back above 80% as well as recording the highest capital city result nationally. Whilst sale volume was down, the preliminary clearance rate demonstrates robust buyer demand across the market. Individual sales results show buyers are comfortable paying what some may perceive as bullish prices. Similar to this time last year, travelling domestically has become difficult. Unlike the bushfires of 2019, this year the threat is from something which cannot be seen. The speed of which coronavirus infections cause Governments to shut borders, restrict travel and force those coming from hotspots to quarantine was unimaginable even 10 months ago. For this reason, I anticipate a high proportion of Canberrans will not travel and instead contemplate if their current home best suits their lifestyle requirements, or if using funds saved by not travelling could be a jump start towards a deposit to enter the market. This will result in knock-down rebuilds, renovations, extensions and increased demand for new properties. Flow-on effects from the inability to travel freely has resulted in an insatiable demand for quality off-plan properties, especially for those which are HomeBuilder eligible. Even though almost all solicitors will shut down on 24 December for holidays, buyers are expecting to be able to transact right up

until 31 December. For this reason, some vendors are updating their contracts to offer extended cooling-off periods allowing the exchange to happen this year by an agent, however, provide time for the buyer to seek advice in 2021. This will maintain a strong deal flow for the remainder of 2020.
Canberra property ‘exceptional asset’ Positive sentiment has seen residential property in Canberra proven to be an exceptional asset to have exposure to. CoreLogic reported year on year to 30 November that property values increased by 7.03%. This is astonishing when reviewing the forecasts of up to 30% decline from earlier this year. Looking into 2021 and without Government intervention, it appears most likely the market will continue along its current growth cycle. According to a recent report by REIA, owning property in Canberra is the second most affordable capital city nationally, even though it also has the second-highest median property value. High levels of affordability mean property values could be significantly higher which is a trend seen unfolding in the market.

Rental support extended The ACT Government has extended supports put in place for tenants impacted by COVID-19 for three months to 30 April 2021. In October, the Government announced the transitional measures would protect tenants from being evicted for debt accrued during the six-month moratorium on evictions, provided they pay their rent as it falls due during the transitional period. “This has been a challenging year for Canberra renters who are struggling to make ends meet,” said Attorney-General Shane Rattenbury. “This announcement will give tenants and landlords greater certainty this Christmas and ensure tenants will be given more time and support to stay in their homes.” The transitional measures also allow impacted tenants to end fixed-term leases early, without penalty, if they need to move due to a change in circumstances. Landlords who have reduced rent for impacted tenants by at least 25% have been supported through land tax and rates rebates for the period to June 2021.
Construction begins on final stage of DKSN Construction has officially commenced on the second and final stage of the DKSN project. Stage two of development will be home to 205 apartments and commercial space, which will include a childcare facility, medical centre, gym and a Woolworths Metro supermarket. “Stage two will see the culmination of the vision for a vibrant new precinct,” says director of development company Englobo Group, John Susa. The Residences Maximising space and light Turner Macarthur Avenue The final instalment of the Midtown precinct, The Residences marries style, luxury and quality across one-, two- and threebedroom apartments in soughtafter Turner. Blackshaw Projects’ Sam Dodimead says the 90 apartments that form The Residences have been “carefully designed by Cox Architecture to maximise space and sunlight”. With every floor of the development carefully planned, each home will be fitted with quality appliances and “striking natural finishes”, while residents have the choice between two
distinctive colour schemes. “The roof top residents’ garden has commanding views of the surrounding area,” says Dodimead, where residents will be able to soak in the outlook, all while having the city on their doorstop with a wealth of shopping, dining and entertainment options. “Residents have immediate access to light rail giving them unrivalled convenience,” Dodimead says. “The Residences are located in the middle of the Inner North, enjoying convenient access to Canberra City, Braddon, O’Connor shops, Lyneham shops, Dickson shopping precinct and Ainslie shops.” With all that surrounds this boutique development, Dodimead says The Residences’ ideal buyers would be live-in owners, those who are “seeking great value apartments”, as well as investors on the lookout for “high rental yield and to own within a low maintenance building”. “There is ground floor retail with cafés and boutique shops,” he says.
“HTI Group and Cox Architecture won an ACT Architecture award in 2019 for Edgeworth, a previously completed part of the precinct.”

celebrity birthday TIMOTHÉE CHALAMET 27 December 1995 The earthy and practical sign of Capricorn and its ruler Saturn will be governing Timothée’s affairs in the months to come. His discipline and instincts will help him achieve great things. With cautious discernment, slowly but surely, he will reach his goals. Saturn bears a solitary influence, and his best work and achievement may be behind closed doors away from the limelight. He mustn’t fear this as he will discover many new things about himself and learn just how strong he really is.

in the stars CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN
The Full Moon on 30 December indicates issues with a family member are likely and you might feel envious. You could develop an interest in selfimprovement; it’s time to learn that language you’ve been thinking about or develop a new skill to boost your chances of promotion at work.
This is not the best time to travel as delays and confusions are likely. The Full Moon on 30 December indicates that drama is likely at home and you are wise not to overdo the drink intake or to eat too much rich food.
The Full Moon on 30 December indicates at work you will be expected to be efficient and down to earth. Take care not to trifle with other people’s emotions. All in all, watch your step as it will be difficult to avoid displeasing at least one person this week.
The Full Moon on 30 December indicates that you will need to be prepared for loved ones to be impulsive, rash and even a little stressed out or bad tempered. Unless you are in the mood to deal with this kind of behaviour, you’re best to find company elsewhere.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY
The Full Moon on 30 December indicates that if you become bossy or arrogant, someone will be quick to put you in your place. Let the more compassionate you shine! If financial issues arise with a partner or housemate, it might be best to talk to them sensibly and quietly.
SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV
AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB
The Full Moon on 30 December indicates that emotions are going to be heightened. While you may not care for a colleague’s or relative’s attitude, do your best to avoid misunderstandings. If you need some financial advice, shelf that Scorpio pride and go to the experts.
The Full Moon on 30 December indicates that people at work may be uncooperative and even evasive, so the best thing to do is to keep to yourself until this mood passes. You need to fight for a sense of proportion and perhaps not take life so seriously.
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR
The Full Moon on 30 December indicates if you’ve had to put up with an unsatisfactory situation or undesirable behaviour by someone else for far too long, it’s time for a showdown. You can quite easily get your way with people this week, especially if you use charm and diplomacy.
The Full Moon on 30 December indicates issues on the romantic front. You need to know when to switch off from your ambitions and to focus on your loved ones who have been waiting for you to come home. If you have faith in yourself, this will rub off on others.
The Full Moon on 30 December indicates you may overhear something that could hurt your feelings; some people unfortunately can be rather tactless. You could find other people will be open minded to your point of view, which is especially helpful when dealing with any official matters.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE The Full Moon on 30 December unfortunately occurs in the cash area of your life which could either mean a loss of source of income or a treasured possession. This is no time to gamble. The best way to deal with strange situations is to trust your instincts.
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT The Full Moon on 30 December indicates some troubles may develop with your social plans and not to be too trusting with new acquaintances. You might need to stop yourself from developing romantic feelings for someone who is unavailable as it’s far more trouble than it’s worth.

Sunita Kumar
2020 ACT Business Woman of the Year
Sunita Kumar was named the 2020 ACT Business Woman of the Year at the awards night on Thursday 5 November. Sunita owns and operates the award-winning Daana Indian Restaurant in Curtin, alongside her husband Sanjay, and says the award win is “still sinking in”. “We arrived in Australia in 2012. If somebody had told me on that day that eight years later you’re going to be winning the Business of the Woman of the Year Award, I would have laughed,” she says. “The [application] process forces you to think about you and your journey and why you do what you do. And for that reason alone I’ve been putting in the applications. The fact that I’m the first Indian-origin woman [to win the award]; that sense of pride from the Indian community is absolutely beautiful.” Daana has been open since 2015, but Sunita says it had been in the works well before that: “we always knew that one day we would do something like Daana”. - Libby Kimber
FOOD HISTORY AND CULTURE “I am big time into food history at the moment,” Sunita says. Her two favourite cookbooks, one gifted to her in her childhood and the other serving as a wealth of knowledge and inspiration for Indian cooking, symbolise Sunita’s passion for sharing food history and culture. On the weekends, Sunita and Sanjay run Daana’s Bhoj, a gastronomic adventure that allows guests to explore the tastes and cuisines of different parts of regional India. “If you come in for that experience then you will get to read a little about what that food is, where it’s from, if there is a theme behind it,” Sunita says. Guests can “get a glimpse of the cultural, historic or some aspect of India which is connected to the food”. Sunita says it’s her and Sanjay’s way of sharing a little bit of their heritage with their loyal customers.
BRACELETS “These are all different bracelets,” Sunita says. “It started off as a fad but then I actually got to understanding what these bracelets do, how the crystals work – it’s a fascinating world out there … I wear them for different reasons, but mostly because it makes me feel good.” She says she has always been inclined to explore aspects of spirituality: “I’m a practising Buddhist, also now interested in finding more about alternative healing, so energy healing, crystal healing.”
