thursday 07 january 2021
This week... Greetings dear readers! Welcome to our first edition of 2021, which, thanks to the magic of technology, planning and a great team, actually went to press before Christmas. Who knew? As a result, I won’t sign off this column with my usual list of things to feel grateful for this past week – a practice regular readers will be all too familiar with. But I will take the opportunity to share why this ritual began – plus it’s a nice way to kick off the New Year. Scientific research shows that being more grateful can improve your overall sense of wellbeing and life satisfaction. The Harvard Medical School defines gratitude as “a thankful appreciation for what an individual receives, whether tangible or intangible. With gratitude, people acknowledge the goodness in their lives … As a result, gratitude also helps people connect to something larger than themselves as individuals – whether to other people, nature, or a higher power”. There are no limits to how big or small that for which you feel gratitude must be - whether it’s a fleeting smile, a pleasant aroma or the gift of life itself. And gratitude can be contagious, in a good (non-viral) way. Recognising all you have to be thankful for, even during testing times, fosters resilience. So today, take note of one thing you’re grateful for - and thank me later (winky face).

A 2019 survey found only one-third of adults aged 25-44 prioritise finding shade when outdoors on summer weekends. Photos: Kerrie Brewer.
Canberra-based Australasian College of Dermatologists president Dr Andrew Miller said the best sunscreen option was broad spectrum SPF 50+.
Parents must save their skin this summer for kids’ sake Research shows kids of the 1980s and 1990s – many of whom now have children of their own – are failing to protect their skin from the sun’s harmful rays, with 25% reporting they get sunburnt on summer weekends. Cancer Council ACT CEO Sandra Turner said this alarming statistic made her concerned the sun safety messages promoted to children in primary school weren’t reinforced by parents at home. “Come the weekends, their parents are saying they have to put their hat on – but Mum and Dad walk around in baseball caps or singlets and don’t cover up,” she said. “It’s about being role models.” The fact melanoma is the most common cancer in Australians aged 15-39 added to the urgency of this message. “I’m not saying any parent is a bad parent, we all need to role model. It’s like stopping at the pedestrian lights.” Bad habits form in secondary school Nearly 50% of Australians aged 25-44 say they like to get a tan, otherwise known as harmful UV damage, according to the 2019 Summer Sun Protection Survey (Life in Australia™). Research shows sun protection becomes unpopular amongst ACT residents as early as secondary 4

school. Only 43% of ACT secondary students wear a hat at school, according to the 2017 Australian Secondary Students’ Alcohol & Drug survey. Australia has the highest melanoma rates in the world, with one person diagnosed every 30 minutes and one person dying from the disease every five hours. Melanoma Institute Australia CEO Matthew Browne said it was time to start life-saving conversations about skin health. “This is a conversation that Australia has to have, to reduce the devastating impact of this disease on young Aussies particularly who have their whole lives ahead of them.” If caught early, 90% of melanomas can be cured with surgery. When to get a skin check In terms of when to get a skin check, Canberra-based Australasian College of Dermatologists president Dr Andrew Miller said it depended entirely on the context. “If you have a family with a history of melanoma and moles, then it’s probably good practice that people should start having their skin checks done in their late teens,” he said. “In someone who is well, who has no family history of skin cancers, they need to self-check on a regular basis.” For those uncertain how to
survey their own skin, Dr Miller recommended getting a baseline check from a professional, to learn what to watch for. Dr Miller said melanoma in a teenager was a rare event, however, people with a family history may have double the risk. In his experience, a frank, sensible and honest conversation about the importance of sun safety worked best with younger people, “rather than being overly prescriptive and accusatory, because that just doesn’t work with kids”. Chronic exposure just as risky as intense exposure in early life There are two broad populations of melanoma, the first being the type that “make the headlines” – melanomas that became invasive, metastasise and kill. These are due to intermittent, intense sunlight exposure in early life. “But there’s a different sub population that are more slowgrowing and thinner, but ultimately if neglected can do the same thing.” Dr Miller said this type was attributable to chronic sun exposure, and “we see a lot in Australia”. “You can never relax, you always need to be careful.” It wasn’t all bad news, though. “The other message is, it’s never too late.”
With people spending less time outdoors last summer because of bushfire smoke and the COVID-19 lockdown, Dr Miller said he saw fewer people presenting with acute sun damage (solar keratosis) in recent months. Sunscreen myths dispelled Dr Miller said sunscreen should only ever be used as part of a sun protection strategy, and he had some pointers when it came to picking the best bottle. “The ones that say SPF 20 or 10 – there’s no guarantee it’s providing protection,” he said. The best and most trustworthy option was broad spectrum SPF 50+. “If they say that it means they’re meeting the Australian standard, and it’s not just UVB, it’s UVA cover.” Most importantly, it should be applied thickly, often and in tandem with other sun protection strategies – not as an excuse to prolong time in the sun. “People often say, ‘I don’t use a sunscreen’, because they use moisturiser or foundation with a sunscreen.” While that may be fine for office workers who only spend 15 minutes outside during the day, Dr Miller said those products were inadequate for people who spend half an hour or more outside. - Rosa Ritchie

news ‘Shrek the Musical’ to come to Canberra Theatre in February Queue up some Smashmouth and bust out the green face paint because Canberra Theatre will ‘get the show on’ in February when Shrek the Musical takes the stage. Produced by one of Australia’s most prolific and successful theatre companies, The Gordon Frost Organisation, their interrupted Australian tour of Shrek the Musical will recommence in Queensland early this month before starting its
Canberra run from 14 February. Canberra’s love for major commercial musical theatre productions has been demonstrated twice in the past three years; initially with Mamma Mia in 2017 and then in 2019 with Westside Story. Having been at Opera Australia when they brought Westside Story to Canberra in 2019, Theatre director Alex Budd told Canberra Weekly that Shrek will cater to Canberra’s “great, broad love” for large-scale musicals. “We’re slowly but surely building what in other capital cities is a really large sector of the audience,” he said. Mr Budd said running major commercial productions in Canberra hasn’t been feasible in the past given the economic limitations of Canberra Theatre’s 1,200-seat capacity. “We’ll do what we can prior to the new theatre eventuating down the track, which is a high priority infrastructure project of the ACT Government,” he said.

Mr Budd said when complete, the proposed 2,000-seat venue would become “a real game changer”.

Presenting late-1990s, early-2000s pop alongside older classics that drive the story forward, Shrek’s rich soundtrack is part of what helped the movie resonate so well upon release and has continued to propel its sustained global success as a musical since debuting on Broadway in 2008. Since Canberra Theatre reopened to audiences in August, Mr Budd said the local voracious appetite for live theatre has been noticed and greatly appreciated. “We have barely had an empty seat in our reduced capacity offerings since we reopened,” he said. For example, The Wharf Revue sold more tickets in 2020 than in 2019. Under local health directions (as at 23 December 2020), Canberra Theatre is able to host audiences at 65% capacity, a number Mr Budd is optimistic could increase by February, depending on the situation. “We also have some flexibility around the length of time that we run. If for some reason the capacity can’t move past 65%, there is an opportunity to run a little bit longer to satisfy audience demand and get tens of thousands of people through the door.” - Denholm Samaras

news ACT’s container deposit scheme midway through 2020. “The opportunities to do fundraising, even within the club, became quite difficult and we had to think about other ways,” she said.
Funds raised by the ACT Companion Dog Club through the container deposit scheme go towards enhancing the club’s facilities and grounds at Symonston. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
ACT Companion Dog Club rounds up containers for funds Canberra’s oldest dog training club, the ACT Companion Dog Club, was forced to adapt their fundraising methods during 2020 as COVID restrictions made their regular Bunnings sausage sizzles unfeasible. Club senior vice president Heather McPherson’s champion
Labrador Pepsi, a model for welltrained dogs, would sit beside the barbecue as club ambassador getting pats all day long; it was a tried and tested method for garnering support. Ms McPherson told Canberra Weekly the club started collecting cans and bottles to fundraise via the
“ WE INSTIL EACH BOTTLE WITH A SIGNATURE FLAVOUR THAT REFLECTS ITS UNIQUE AND INTRICATE NATURE.”
“We sell a lot of the containers within the club that are returnable, so we thought we’d set something up.” What started off as a small box located outside their Symonston clubhouse has since grown substantially. “People started bringing their bags in … we set up an account for the club under the club’s phone number and now members can actually take their own containers down to a deposit centre, drop them in, and those funds are then credited onto the club,” she said. “I’m hoping to set up a bin outside where people can come by and drop their bottles. “10 cents a bottle isn’t a lot, but if everyone does their little bit those

funds can add up.” As is so often the case, the urge to round up as many bottles and cans as possible has permeated through the club. Having started at their former Fyshwick premises on the aptlynamed Collie Street in 1958, the club moved over to its nine-hectare Symonston site in 1983. Money raised through container returns is going toward enhancing the club’s facilities and grounds, for example, purchasing outdoor tables and chairs, fixing fences and lawn maintenance. “The biggest cost is the maintenance of our grounds … particularly when it rains and there’s a lot of mowing,” Ms McPherson said. “And weed control, the last thing people want when they bring their dogs here is bindiis in the grass.” Read an extended version of this story at canberraweekly.com.au - Denholm Samaras

news The power of imagination and a mechanical mind When Canberra College 2020 Year 12 graduate Catriona Cochrane first saw a movie from the Transformers franchise, she set her sights on building a similarly awe-inspiring robot in the future. “I’m still working towards that one,” Ms Cochrane said. The desire to do it herself fuelled her interest in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) throughout high school, and in 2020 she was the recipient of an ACT Government Girls in STEM grant. The $2,000 reward went towards materials for her robotics project, which is a prosthetic hand designed to receive signals from nerves rather than muscles to prompt movement. “I had two ideas, and I couldn’t pick between which one I wanted to do.” The first was to build a Transformer, the second was to create a device that takes thoughts from
nerves in the brain and puts them into words, advancing the technology used by late theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking, who lost control of his speech and used a device that read his facial muscles to communicate. Ms Cochrane said her goal was to bypass reading the muscles. “There are a lot of people with conditions similar to his who don’t have access to those face muscles, or any muscles really, and it ends up being a real struggle trying to communicate with them,” she said. “Those are still ideas that I really want to work on maybe a bit later in life, when I’ve got more knowledge and expertise. “And my mum was like, ‘Well, why don’t you try and do something that’ll take factors of both of those that you can then improve on, that will help you with them later?” Ms Cochrane loves science fiction
and literature; she’s currently writing a novel, and her project clearly benefits from both imagination and a mechanical mind. She said her biggest piece of advice for young women with a dream like hers was to ask teachers for support. “Especially if you’re doing something that nobody thinks you want to do.” “With engineering, I had a bunch of people being like, ‘Oh, but you’re really good at your languages’ and they wouldn’t look at the maths and science and stuff like that.” When Ms Cochrane let her teachers know her plan was to pursue engineering, they said, “Actually, we can help you get there”. This year, Ms Cochrane will study a UNSW Bachelor of Electrical Engineering at ADFA in Canberra and continue work on

ACT plans electric bus fleet By 2024, the ACT Government hopes that every bus on Canberra’s roads will be electric. In December 2020, the Government began a market sounding to purchase 90 electric buses and their associated operating requirements (charging infrastructure, maintenance, and energy supply) next year. Minister for Transport and City Services, Chris Steel, said the Government intends to replace every diesel and compressed natural gas bus in Transport Canberra’s fleet with modern, zero-emission buses – “clean, quiet, and reliable”. This first tranche of 90 buses will fulfil an ACT Labor election commitment. Transport is the ACT’s largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, accounting for 57% of total emissions in 2019-20. 10
canberraweekly.com.au
The Zero-Emission Transition Plan for Transport Canberra, released in September 2020, sets out the government’s plans for a zero-emission public transport system by 2040. Under the Plan, the Government will also upgrade the Woden Bus Depot by 2022, build a new zeroemissions bus terminal by 2026, and convert the remaining bus depots to zero-emissions. The first electric bus is expected to begin operation in the 2021-22 financial year, and the last by 2024. The Government has allocated $44.51 million over the forward budget ending 2022–23 to purchase 84 new buses. - Nick Fuller Find an extended version of this story online at canberraweekly.com.au

Katie May, who works in pathology, was keen to spend 2020 enjoying life as a new mum.
Adelaide Omina’s daughter celebrated her seventh birthday in isolation with immediate family only.
2020: Canberrans describe their isolation, challenges and learnings 2020 has been described in many ways, not all of which can be printed in polite company. So, CW journalist Cassandra Power asked Canberrans to tell us about their year. While the year that was affected everyone differently and not necessarily equally, we all have a story. As we move through 2021, let’s keep the kindness we found in our moments of challenge. Katie May Katie was keen to spend 2020 enjoying life as a new mother to a six-month-old boy. When COVID hit, she was planning to ease back into work in pathology. “It was scary for everyone, including my colleagues, my family, my friends, patients,” Katie said. “Before it was under a level of control in Canberra, everything was unknown. We were all scared to go to work, I was scared to go home not knowing if I was bringing more than myself home to my baby and partner. “Motherhood can be a lonely place when you are starting out; this made it a thousand times worse.” Katie was disappointed her son’s first year of life was spent trapped inside with his parents stressed and worried. She disliked watching the world suffer and seeing how people treated frontline staff, 12

walking the streets and in supermarkets trying to get themselves food. Katie was surprised with how great Canberra survived and how toilet paper became like “jailhouse currency”. Her new skill of 2020 was disinfecting a supermarket trolley with one hand whilst holding a child like a professional. But she developed a bad habit of making funny faces at people at work, in public or the car – and then realising she wasn’t wearing a mask anymore! “What I’m most looking forward to in 2021 is spending more time with friends and family, meeting our new daughter arriving in January and hopefully continuing to be able to go outside if everyone does the right thing.” Adelaide Omina Adelaide had a big party planned for her daughter, Nandi’s seventh birthday in April, but lockdown changed her plans. Instead of all her friends and family it was just her, her brother, sister, Mum and Dad. “We made the most of it and she loved it.” Felicity Banks Felicity Banks was planning on spending 2020 supporting her son at Kindy and selling her steampunk novels at fairs and festivals.
Lockdown and her own immunocompromised caution meant her son and his big sister spent a lot more than one term at home and no bookselling festivals for her. “We bought a second cat so I could cope with it all,” Felicity said. “And my son thrived on the educational computer games supplied by his school.” Felicity was disappointed lockdown affected her daughter’s schooling. “But she and her teacher are both content,” she said. “I’m also disappointed ‘belief in science’ is considered a political position.” Qualifying for JobKeeper has been “extremely helpful” for Felicity but she’s barely written anything this year. “Amidst all the pain of 2020”, Felicity said it’s the mentoring program from the Community Refugee Sponsorship Initiative that has made her excited. “I am now the very happy leader of the Castle of Kindness Refugee Sponsorship Group and we just met a refugee family that we will be spending a lot of time with for the next six months,” she said. “This year reminded people that humanity only works when we are kind and I am so thrilled to have something I can do as an ordinary person to make the world a little kinder to those who need it most.” David Brown David had planned to spend 2020 in Europe but instead went to Longreach, Cooktown, Darwin, and Uluru. “This has been a great year,” David said. “I have done a major house refurbishment, seen new parts of Australia and am having the year of my life.” But he is surprised about the selfish people demanding their rights rather than contributing to community health. Jane Penders Jane is staying positive. She’s happy to have kept her job and been able to work from home, spend more time building up her flower farm and connecting differently with family, friends and colleagues. It wasn’t all good news for Jane and her family. She cancelled a trip to Vietnam to see her eldest son, her young, fit partner had a sudden heart attack and open heart surgery, and her grandson wasn’t able to have a party. “This is a year nobody will forget,” Jane said. - Cassandra Power Find more stories like this online at canberraweekly.com.au
GIVIT donation of the week: landscaping supplies A local live-in facility that supports youth aged 13-17, who are faced with severe mental health issues often caused by trauma and family dynamics, has seen its busiest year to date. The facility offers a short-term live-in program where teens can undergo treatment while feeling safe and secure before reintegrating into their world and family environment. The facility is looking for the support of the greater community to renovate the outdoor garden space. Currently, the outdoor area is not being used by the teens due to it being in desperate need of improvement to create an environment that is safe, peaceful and inviting. Having a comfortable outdoor garden for the teens to use for therapeutic programs such as art therapy, gardening, meditation and relaxation techniques will have a huge impact on their overall recovery. The organisation is looking for materials which can be used by a volunteer landscape architect to renovate the space. Materials include sand, stepping stones, mulch, clean fill, top soil, potting mix, turf, fencing and decking. The outdoor space is equivalent to a large backyard, so a decent quantity of each item is required. Any donation, big or small will help make this garden transformation a reality. Donations can be delivered to or collected by the organisation. To donate, visit givit.org.au/donate-items, search by category “Garden and Outdoor” in your local area to view the organisations requests. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off.

Peel the thick skin off the pomelo, then remove enough of the outer white pith to be able to separate the pomelo into individual segments. Run a small paring knife along the flat side of a segment to release the inner fruit from the membrane. Repeat with the remaining segments. Slice the top and bottom off the grapefruit to expose the fruit. Use a paring knife to remove the skin and pith following the curve of the fruit. Slice crossways to make rounds. Reserve the accumulated juices in a bowl and set aside. Repeat with the oranges. Shave the celery with a peeler or mandolin. Cut the ribbons down into bite-sized pieces. Place the celery and leaves in the bowl with the reserved juices. Drizzle with a little olive oil and lightly toss. To serve, arrange all the mixed citrus on a platter or individual plates. Top with the dressed celery, pistachios and a light sprinkling of salt.

Shane Dundas lends his vocal talents to ‘Maya the Bee’ films With their penchant for pantomime, voices, sound effects and improvisation, it’s surprising the Umbilical Brothers haven’t done more voice acting. “Prior to this, the only kids’ animation I remember us doing was Maisy, in which we did all the character voices and sound effects,” one half of the legendary comedy duo, Canberran Shane Dundas told Canberra Weekly. Dundas and his partner in crime, David Collins, have appeared as Barney and Arnie – an ant duo providing comic relief – since the first film in the Australian-produced series was released in 2014. Ahead of their work on the new animated family movie Maya The Bee: The Golden Orb hitting screens on 7 January, Dundas said he’s had a ball in the recording booth with Collins over the course of the trilogy. “We could have a two-line exchange that turns into a two-minute conversation,” Dundas said. “The only frustration is when we come up with some awesome gag, because riffing is what creates a lot of our stuff, and it doesn’t find a place
in the film because, understandably, this is for young viewers. “There’s often a situation where we see the film and go ‘oh, but we did some gold on that scene! There’s gold there! You cut the gold!’.” Riffing off-script and letting their comedic chemistry shine even sees their signature Umbilical Brothers physicality find its way into their vocal performances. “If you see us in the booth, we’re still physical, like I’ll screw my body up when I’m saying ‘oh, let’s get out of here’ or whatever it is. It’s strange that it happens but it does help the voice,” Dundas said. “You are almost physically assuming the mask of whatever the character has.”
From Canberra to New York and back A Canberran through and through, despite his extraordinary success in comedy, Dundas has had his share of typical Canberra life experiences – such as moving away and returning. “I had come from Canberra, grown up here, had friends here, and eventually I moved back here
EDDIE DANIELS
after we did a year in New York in ’99,” he said. Prior to leaving to attend acting school in Sydney, he even had a brief stint in the public service, Defence to be precise. “I never intended on continuing working there for better or for worse, because, you know, I would have had a more solid super account … but you make these choices,” he smiled. Before leaving town, Dundas had dalliances in acting and performing. He recalled doing a summer theatre show for kids in the 1980s with community theatre company, TAU, called The Bunyip and the Alien. “I played the Prime Minister,” he said. “I can’t remember if I was a koala or a wombat, but I had this furry suit on and I played him as Bob Hawke; it was quite bizarre, that happened in Canberra before I went to do serious acting training. “There was definitely something comedic and theatrical going on there.” Having been back for 20 years now, Dundas finds Canberra affords him the private lifestyle he enjoys. “You can be yourself and no one’s going to hassle you,” he said. Book talk Jeff Popple reviews three exciting novels to start off the year’s reading. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com The Nothing Man by Catherine Ryan Howard Corvus, $29.99
This sophisticated and intelligent novel provides a fresh slant on the shop-worn serial killer genre. Nearly 20 years ago, Eve Black survived the brutal attack on her family by the killer known as the Nothing Man. Now she has written a true crime memoir that she hopes will catch him. Security guard Jim Doyle is keenly reading Eve’s memoir and growing angrier. He is the Nothing Man and, as he reads, he realises that Eve is close to revealing his secrets. Alternating between extracts from Eve’s book and Doyle’s reaction to it, Howard’s novel steadily ratchets up the suspense as the two storylines come together. Recommended.
Tell Me Lies by J. P. Pomare Hachette, $24.99
Also very clever and well written is J. P. Pomare’s third novel, Tell Me Lies. Set in Melbourne, it opens with a horrific incident at a train station, before backtracking to explore the events that led up to it. The story focusses on psychologist Margot Scott’s interactions with her clients, including the enigmatic Cormac. Someone seems to be stalking Margot and she suspects that it is one of her clients, but as events escalate out of control, she begins to question aspects of her own past. Some startling surprises towards the end and a dark, thoughtful conclusion with keep you frantically turning the pages.
Kill A Stranger by Simon Kernick Headline, $32.99
You always know what you are going to get with a Simon Kernick novel; fast frenetic action and plenty of it, and this is certainly the case with Kill A Stranger. Matt arrives home to find his fiancée, Kate, missing and the body of a woman he has never seen in their bed. To clear his name and save Kate, he has 24 hours to do the unthinkable. Kernick excels at this type of twisty, ingenious plotting and Kill A Stranger rockets along at a great rate from one surprise to the next. Highly entertaining, it is the perfect read for the beach or the pool this summer. 18

Pantone has announced its Colour of the Year for 2021, and this year they’ve graced us with two hues to serve as inspiration for our looks for the coming year. Pantone describes their choices for this year, ‘ultimate grey’ and the lemon-yellow ‘illuminating’, as a union that’s “practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic”, “a message of happiness supported by fortitude” and “aspirational and gives us hope”. Pinterest’s users are looking to cosy up in the winter months, with searches up for slouchy socks.
On trend for 2021
The inspo overlords at Pinterest have announced the more than 150 trends they think will be everywhere in 2021, and among them are a number of fashion and beauty trends set to take the world by storm. Comfy clothes, natural skin and low-key weddings are just some of their predictions for this year – no doubt some of these are inspired by the tumultuous year that was 2020.
Fashion layering up, with searches for ‘quilted clothes’, ‘cocoon sweater’ and ‘slouch socks’ all on the up. Gen Z will be taking the DIY trend to a whole new level, with users searching for things like ‘jean painting ideas’, ‘custom hoodies’ and ‘reworked clothes’.
Beauty In the beauty world, it’s all about minimalism, or ‘skinimalism’, when it comes to your beauty look. Users are ditching the makeup and searching for tips on naturally glowing skin, facemasks and natural makeup. In the makeup sphere, it’s all about maximalism, with trends like colourful brows – ‘rainbrows’ – leading the charge, alongside cute, emoji-inspired makeup and nails. Searches for ‘smiley face nails’ and ‘butterfly eye makeup’ are both up!
When it comes to hair, low maintenance is in, with searches for different styles of braids on the up. People have also been looking to beads and colourful highlights to up their hair game.
Travel One of the most-affected activities last year, travel will be largely a domestic affair for some time to come. Pinterest-ers are taking to the car for their escapes, with searches for things
CW0548
In the fashion stakes, things are about to get a whole lot more comfortable, with the Pinterest Predicts report pegging ‘Athflow’ – that’s where athleisurewear meets elegance, in case you were wondering – as the next trend, with searches for ‘soft outfits’ up 185%. Come winter, we’ll no doubt be
Get ya glow on: it’s all about natural, luminous skin.

Step inside: official residence of Sweden in Canberra WITH HOME EDITOR, CASSANDRA POWER
Is there a country more synonymous with interior design than Sweden? The official Swedish residence in Yarralumla speaks to the famous stylish simplicity, minimalism and functionality that defines Scandinavian design, while a conversation with Ambassador His Excellency Henrik Cederin gives the design philosophy context, showing how it permeates Swedish life. In 1947, then Consul-General Constans Lundquist kickstarted the Swedes’ official Canberra residence by hiring his architect
brother Edvard. Edvard created a long, white, twostorey building with copper roof and trademark Swedish blue accents for an authentic Scandinavian look. The scarcity of materials and industrial strikes of postWorld-War-II Australia delayed construction on the 30,000 sqm site, and Edvard died before the building’s 1951 completion. Today, the residence holds significant items of Swedish culture and art. A grand entrance with glass
tetraptych depicts the long journey from Sweden to Australia, with Illustrations of Stockholm scenes and characters, the voyage across oceans, and Australian icons etched into the glass panels. The formal sitting room with she-oak parquetry flooring and Swedish marble-topped fireplace has an antique chest of drawers inspired by late 18th century monarch, King Gustav III. While the detail of the house is beautiful, it remains restrained, and reflects the Swedish concept
of Largom. A word without direct translation, Mr Cederin said Largom reflects the Swedish personality. “We use it often and it means ‘just right’,” he said. “It’s a good tradeoff between extremes with a middleground solution.” Partially enclosed by glass, the large terrace looks onto a vast garden, making it the perfect place for the Swedish social phenomenon, Fika. (continued page 26)

(from page 25) Meaning more than just having a coffee, Fika can happen anytime and is a legitimate reason to set aside a moment and savour quality time with colleagues, family or friends. Perhaps this prioritisation of people contributes to Sweden’s consistent top-ten rankings in the happiest countries in the world. Their high-taxing, high-service government could also contribute. Mr Cederin said free health care and education can help ease stress, and only happens because Swedish citizens trust their government. “We are a strong welfare and egalitarian state, with a strong labor movement going back 100 years,” he said. Mr Cederin said Sweden’s tradition of free schooling contributed to an educated population. “The best brains are not always in the families with the biggest budgets. In our social contract, Swedes are
willing to pay higher taxes; we know we get a lot out of it.” Australia and Sweden tackle the major issues of the 21st century very differently – the Swedes set targets. Mr Cederin said 20 years ago, only 20% of Sweden’s ambassadors were women. After having “formulated” a 50% target, they’re nearly there with 48%. In 2014, Sweden became the first country to introduce a “feminist foreign policy”, reinforcing the feminist credentials of a country considered one of the best in the world for gender equality. “It was visionary,” he said. “But for the rest of us, we had to learn, what does it mean?” According to Mr Cederin, six years later, the inclusion of women at the table for peace and security has led to better outcomes. “With that mindset, a society will see the value in promoting women and then it can happen, but you have to work on it with good method.”
The small dining room looks out onto a grand property and is the perfect place for a Fika (a Swedish word for taking the time to have a coffee with your family or friends).

VIETNAM VETERANS HONOURED
55th Anniversary of Australia’s First Troop Deployment Remembered
$29.99 + $9.99
Historic 24-carat Gold-layered Coin Honours One who was Only 19
Gunship, troop carrier, med-evac – the Iroquois “Huey” chopper became an iconic symbol for our Vietnam veterans He was only 19, yet served his country with honour like his father before him
Our Vietnam veterans remain unique heroes in the Anzac legend. No service personnel before or after the conflict have endured as much on and off the battlefield. Like the diggers of previous generations, they are deserving of our respect. From 1962, when the first military advisors entered the region, the Vietnam theatre has polarised popular opinion. As our troops were committed to action against the Communist People’s Army of Vietnam in 1965, it became apparent that the Vietnam conflict would be a war unlike any other. Waged on the nightly television news as much as on the battlefield, civilians saw war in all its ugly brutality. By the time of the Tet Offensive in 1968, serious questions were raised as to why our troops were fighting there in the first place. Were the Communists really a threat to our freedom? As the casualties mounted, so did the political rhetoric. Caught in the middle were our diggers. Whether they joined up freely or were conscripted ‘nashos’, they became unwitting

casualties of a war nobody understood or wanted. The worst was to face them upon their return home. Spat at, abused, denied return servicemen status that their fathers had enjoyed, they retreated from society. By 1987, our Vietnam veterans were duly given the recognition they so justly deserved. Their call to duty has reverberated through the Anzac legend, a lone voice seeking solace amongst the heroes of Gallipoli, Kokoda, Korea and other conflicts which have become part of our collective history. That voice is now given substance and form in the “Call of Duty – Vietnam 55th Anniversary Commemorative” golden proof coin.

DELUXE PRESENTATION CASE VIETNAM 55TH ANNIVERSARY COMMEMORATIVE
Certificate of Authenticity
Our Vietnam veterans remain unique heroes in the Anzac legend. Perhaps no service personnel before or after the conflict have endured as much on and off the battlefield. And like the diggers before them, are just as deserving of our respect. The story of our Vietnam diggers can now be told proudly, clearly and with a voice that acknowledges our debt of gratitude to them. 1962: Honouring those who were only 19. They were the forgotten diggers. A generation of young men who fought for Australia like their fathers before them. But they returned as outcasts. 55 years after our first troop deployment, a new crown coin has been struck to honour the men whose bravery will never be forgotten. This limited edition commemorative depicts a digger ‘in-country.’ Ever vigilant, he surveys a terrain in which snipers may lay in wait. A flight of Iroquois “Huey” choppers loom overhead. Gunship, troop carrier, medivac, the Huey was an ever-present symbol of war and of home to the Vietnam digger as he answered the call of duty. The obverse features a commemorative seal depicting the “Huey” chopper, the years of military involvement and the heartfelt message “A Nation’s Gratitude”. Struck to a high specification and layered in pure 24-carat gold, with a limitation of only 9,999 issues worldwide.
