This week... From the editor As pandemic restrictions continue to put the kybosh on so many people’s summer plans (including my much-awaiting sailing trip around Pittwater), I’ve decided to have a bit of nonsensical fun with this week’s column and to seek your input. We’ve heard Tuggers is short for Tuggeranong and Gunners for Gungahlin. Residents of Canberra are known as Canberrans, those from Quangers as Queanbeyanites, while Googonians famously inhabit Googong. Do you have a nickname for your suburb or its residents? Perhaps you’re the pride of Lyons, a Downer Upper from Upper Downer, a Swinger Hillclimber or a Fisher man’s friend? A Mawson or Mawdaughter from Mawson (similarly Harrison and Richardson), a Fyshwiccan from Fyshwick or a Garran Baron/ess. Do O’Connartists come from O’Connor and Gungahlingerers from Gunners? I invite you to have a bit of fun and play with possible monikers for the residents of your suburb or a spot nearby. Email your ideas to news@canberraweekly.com.au with ‘ACT suburbanites’ in the subject heading. We’ll share our favourites online at canberraweekly.com.au and our top pick will win a book bundle. Reasons to be grateful this week include a taste of summer weather, a lakeside picnic with friends and delightful rowboat trip on a balmy Sunday evening, dinner with friends, a NSW South Coast getaway, yoga and redeeming my Xmas gift voucher for a remedial Thai massage. Bliss! - Julie Samaras

news Fifteen volunteers from the ACT State Emergency Service (ACTSES) and the Rural Fire Service (RFS) were seconded to the police this week to help manage the thousands of Canberrans in quarantine. They will be on the phone from 9.30am to 4pm each day. Cheerfully yet methodically, they work their way through lists of names, contacting people who have travelled to NSW hotspots – making sure they are complying with COVID-19 regulations, and checking on their wellbeing. Over the last month, police have conducted approximately 1,500 compliance checks each week. But on Monday morning (11 January), approximately 7,500 people were in home quarantine in the ACT – many of them returned from Queensland. That number dropped to around 2,600 by Tuesday once Greater Brisbane was no longer declared a COVID-19 affected area. But even the previous week’s figure of 3,500 (Friday 8 January) was still “beyond the capacity of ACT Policing”, said Detective Superintendent Rohan Smith, from the ACT Policing COVID-19 Taskforce. The SES and RFS are easing the pressure.

“With assistance from SES, we’re contacting over a hundred people in quarantine every hour that we wouldn’t have been able to check on,” Supt Smith said. ACT Health, leading the local COVID-19 response, provides a list of people in quarantine, sorted by risk category. The police will pay house calls on ‘high-risk’ persons who have visited significant hotspots like Sydney’s Northern Beaches – an average of 90 in-person visits a day. (On ‘days of action’, the police may do up to 1,000 in-person checks.) Visitors to lower risk hotspots like Greater Sydney, or family groups with young children, may receive a phone call. People in quarantine will receive a text message asking them to contact ACT Policing’s Police Assistance Line (131 444). An ACTSES volunteer will ask people to verify their details and quarantine requirements. According to Supt Smith, the compliance rate had been extraordinarily high. “People understand why we’re doing it, and we have found a high level of support from persons in those confinements. They want to get the phone call done quickly because they realise that it’s a COVID compliance check, and

get on with their business.” ACT SES Chief Officer Anthony Draheim said he was extremely proud of the volunteers. Whether through the bushfires, the hailstorms, or, since March, COVID, these “amazing guys and girls” want to protect their community. Canberra filmmaker creates virtual reality healing program As a teenager, Canberra filmmaker Christian Doran kept his cinematography ambitions quiet from some adults in his life, instead telling them he wanted to be a chiropractor. “I knew they were worried about job security (in filmmaking),” he said. “And I was always fascinated by the human body and brain.” Despite its challenges, Mr Doran pursued his dream and spent 15 successful years in the industry before he felt the “need for change”. There was “some tinkering” with 360-degree video and fitness apps before he realised that fitness apps alone “weren’t going to get him out of bed in the morning”, but perhaps his interest in the human body would. Mr Doran found a dataset about strokes; learnt of a three-month waitlist for post-stroke therapy in remote and rural communities and became inspired to help, tapping into his filmmaking skillset to create virtual reality (VR) programs to aid post-stroke recovery. “That three-month waiting period is when your body most needs to keep moving,” he said. 8

canberraweekly.com.au

“And VR can help anyone keep moving,” Mr Doran spent 18 months travelling Australia consulting with physiotherapists and filming iconic landscapes before creating an immersive, relaxed and fun VR program using medical techniques. “You have to make it fun to keep people coming back,” he said. “People in recovery from strokes have to do monotonous behaviours for hours. It means a lot of people give up.” With a wireless headset and controller and a game from his library of more than 50, a patient can improve their physical and mental outcomes. “It’s entertainment and it helps people in a much more fundamental way,” he said. “It’s a simulation of a safe environment which can allow people to garden, cook or paint. “They practise reaching, grabbing, gripping and report more bending and standing than they thought possible. “It helps people forget their own

news Fitbits and private health data give pause for thought Australians who unwrapped a wristband from wearable tech giant Fitbit this summer likely plan to use the data it collects to improve their health; however, researchers warn there are data privacy concerns to consider. As described on the Fitbit website, the inconspicuous wristband “tracks every part of your day”, including vital signs like heart and breathing rates. One year since Google announced its plans to purchase wearable tech giant Fitbit for $2.1 billion USD, Australian academics voiced concerns that Google will monetise the health data of about 30 million active users. In November 2020, research from the Monash Business School was presented to the European Commission and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), attempting to block Google’s acquisition of Fitbit. Monash Centre for Global Business director

Professor Chongwoo Choe called for decisive action from regulators. “All too often, academics and policymakers look back and lament a failure to intervene more decisively and bemoan their hopeful reliance on remedies that just don’t work,” Professor Choe said. “Blocking the merger doesn’t solve all problems related to health data, but it avoids amplifying already existing problems.” Monash Associate Professor Zhijun Chen said Google’s bid for Fitbit was consistent with its strategy to expand into health care, life sciences and insurance. On 22 December the ACCC rejected a longterm behavioural court enforceable proposal offered by Google that sought to address competition concerns, including that it would not use health data for advertising. ANU Associate Professor Hanna Suominen said there were many privacy and security

concerns to consider when rolling out any technology that collects health data. “Some of the risks with these technologies are: who owns the data? What will be done with it when it’s connected with other purposes? What if my insurance company or future employer gets hold of this data?” “I’m really proud of the digital literacy of Australians, that they do know the risks. “They emphasise that they need to be able to trust the technology,” Professor Suominen said. - Rosa Ritchie

If you’re missing exercise outdoors, experts recommend searching for an online version of your favourite activity.

New study reveals how to stay sane during isolation One year into the pandemic, mandatory quarantine remains a common occurrence in the ACT, and a new RMIT University study reveals keeping busy may not be the best way to cope with the

psychological impact of social isolation. Increasing activity levels with mindless chores leaves people in isolation feeling unsettled and unsatisfied, according to RMIT

co-lead researcher Dr Lauren Saling. “Busyness might be distracting but it won’t necessarily be fulfilling,” she said. “Rather, think about what activities you miss most and try and find a way of doing them.” For example, someone who loves dining out with friends might organise a group dinner date via Zoom. Participants in the Australian study rated their level of wellbeing during social distancing and retrospectively one month beforehand. They also recorded how much time they spent doing different activities and whether those activities were meaningful to them. The results indicated that novelty “meaningless” activities like binge watching TV resulted in more extreme fluctuations between negative and positive

emotions. Dr Saling said the study challenged assumptions that humans were either happy or sad and that sadness could be staved off by keeping busy. Study participants who were occupied with mindless tasks reported feeling more frustrated in isolation, and even when they were happy felt less fulfilled. The wisdom imparted by the study will continue to be useful in 2021; ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr warned COVID-19 outbreaks and clusters will continue even after vaccines were rolled out. “So we are in this for the long haul,” he said. Over the past week there was a three-day surge in the number of people quarantining in Canberra, peaking at approximately 7,500 on Monday 11 January due to border restrictions with Greater Brisbane and Greater Sydney. - Rosa Ritchie

Advertorial

Thank you Canberra On December 31, 2019, a firestorm the likes of which has never been seen swept through our beloved coastal town. Our peaceful bushland home above Surf Beach was completely destroyed along with hundreds of other homes, outbuildings and services in what was the darkest day in our town’s history. From the moment the smoke began to clear, the true devastation became apparent and an overwhelming torrent of support began flooding in. None greater than that of our longest and dearest friends from Australia’s Capital Territory. The South Coast has long held a very special relationship with the people of Canberra and in our time of great need this was more evident than ever. Just hours into the New Year, on what was a day of desolation instead of celebration, we had complete strangers ringing us to offer keys to vacant holiday homes - offering emergency accommodation to those who, like us, had lost everything. We had people from all over Canberra and surrounding areas pledging support in the form of money, food, clothing – whatever they could to help ease the burden of the devastating losses. The days and weeks directly after those events are, and will no doubt remain, the greatest display of humanity we will ever personally witness. Sadly, just as our beautiful town struggled to get back on its feet, we were dealt another cruel blow. This time our friends from Canberra had to help in a completely different and unthinkable way – they had to stay at home. With the fires almost a memory, crews began the biggest coordinated disaster recovery effort in Australia’s history and our perennially open front door was forced shut. Those who had travelled with empty eskies to support our local economy returned home. Now more than ever we have come to appreciate the love and support of our nearest and dearest

friends. Those who visit year in and year out, eat at our restaurants, shop in our stores, swim at our beaches and bring this region to life. On a deeply personal level we would like to say thank you. To all those from over the mountain who supported us through weeks and months of hardship, who not only pledged money, time and effort but above all pledged to come back, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We know we will see you all again soon, to thank you in person and welcome you with open arms.

news Lee-ding the Liberals: Elizabeth Lee determined to win in 2024 Behind her desk, new Canberra Liberals leader Elizabeth Lee keeps a sign: “Defeat? I do not recognise the meaning of the word!” The quote is from Margaret Thatcher; like the Iron Lady, Ms Lee is not for turning. The Korean-born lawyer and academic is determined the Canberra Liberals will win the next election, and end what will have been a quarter-century in opposition by 2024. She intends to be the Liberals’ first chief minister since her mentor, Kate Carnell. “I’m under no delusion about having to work hard to ensure that Canberrans see us a genuine alternate government,” Ms Lee said. “And in the next four years, I’ll work very hard with my team to put forward a vision for the future of Canberra that they will hopefully elect.”

Ms Lee comes across as intelligent, friendly, and ready for a challenge – qualities she will need to change her party’s ailing fortunes. Last October’s results were not what the Liberals hoped, or expected: their sixth consecutive defeat, the loss of two seats, and a swing of 2.9% against them. The party has been licking its wounds; Ms Lee’s immediate priority was to build up her team’s morale. The first step, she said, was to learn from the mistakes the party may have made. A formal review was happening at the party level. Ms Lee would not be drawn on any changes the Canberra Liberals need to make. But she spent the subsequent two months talking to Canberrans to hear where they believe the party can improve, and why they feel they were not electable.

“Politics is about dealing with people; you need to reach their hearts and minds,” Ms Lee said. “It’s not a rational thing, it’s not black and white, so it is going to be difficult.” The Canberra Liberals are presenting themselves as the party of multiculturalism, women’s empowerment, and the working class – platforms often associated with the left. Ms Lee is Australia’s first Asian-Australian party leader, and the Legislative Assembly’s first female leader since Carnell resigned two decades ago. She and Giulia Jones are the ACT’s first all-women leadership team. The branch includes Italian, Tongan and Malaysian Australians, while MLAs come from the traditional spheres of law, business, the military, social advocacy and the public service, as

well as radio and country music. “When you’re in a privileged position to be a voice for your community, the broader the experience, the better it is,” she said. As opposition leader, Ms Lee said she was happy and open to working with the Labor-Greens Government if she believed their initiatives or propositions were in the best interests of the ACT. But she also promised to hold them to account – including on vulnerable, ‘forgotten’ Canberrans, increased rates, and hospitals. “What got me into politics was being able to advocate for and represent people who may not be in a position to do it for themselves,” Ms Lee said. “That’s what drives me.” - Nick Fuller Read an extended version of this story at canberraweekly.com.au

news Peak season evacuation knocks wind out of Sapphire Coast sails When Victorian health officials announced an impending NSW border closure on New Year’s Eve, thousands of interstate visitors to the Sapphire Coast packed their bags in a “mad panic” that reminded Big 4 Tathra holiday park owner Greg McKay of last season’s bushfire evacuations. “The next day had an eerily similar feel to last year when bushfires ended our season before it even started,” he said. The popular holiday destination was in full swing when it dawned on Victorian guests - who held the majority of sites at the park - that they needed to pack up their campsites immediately. “It was just terrible,” Mr McKay said. When the news broke in the late afternoon on 31 December it took about 20 minutes for Victorians to

“fully digest the context of it”. Apart from the emotional toll of another dramatic end to an annual holiday, packing up hundreds of campsites was a logistical nightmare. “It’s not a five-minute job, it takes a couple of hours.” In the midst of the chaos, Mr McKay said guests from NSW and ACT rallied to help overwhelmed families pack up and prepare to leave. “People were making sandwiches to give to people evacuating.” Victorians make up around 80% of visitors to the Sapphire Coast, meaning the local economy has had the wind taken out of its sails abruptly for the second year in a row. Local tourism expert and founder of The Destination Agency, Anthony Osborne, said the bushfire period last year resulted in a loss of $100 million in spending, one-third of the region’s yearly income.

Mr Osborne said “$30 million plus disappeared overnight” due to the 1 January Victorian border closure, which also took an emotional toll on the community. Being so connected to Victoria and Melbourne, Mr Osborne said most of the visitors across the Sapphire Coast region were friends and relatives reuniting after a long year of COVID-19 lockdowns. Backyards were full, the streets were stacked with cars and there were crowds for the first time in a long time. “Everyone was saying, ‘It’s enormous, I’m so busy’, everyone had great optimism,” he said. “It’s a bit of a desert in some spots now.” Mr McKay’s Big 4 in Tathra normally does a quarter of its turnover for the year in January. “This month is when you like to be fully booked. Looking around now,

Tourism operators along the NSW Sapphire Coast hope visitors from the ACT will take advantage of newly available holiday bookings and empty beaches. Getty.

I just can’t believe this place is not buzzing as usual.” Mr McKay and tourism operators across the region hope new visitors from ACT and regional NSW will take advantage of the unexpected number of available bookings. “Next week is looking better than it did a few days ago, we managed to fill a few holes,” he said. “There’s always a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel.” - Rosa Ritchie

Spend 2021 in the kitchen What’s trending in the kitchen for the year ahead? After a year that saw many of us confined to our houses (and kitchens) for a lot of the time, the way we think about eating and preparing food has changed. The Pinterest Predicts report shows people globally are searching for new ideas to please their taste buds,

like next-level charcuterie boards, chef-worthy dishes prepared at home and lots of spice.

Restaurant at home

If you can’t go out, stay in! Pinterest is predicting people will continue to prepare restaurant quality meals

Celebrate

at home with the presentation to match – searches for ‘gourmet food plating’ are on the up, as are searches for garnishes and ‘bread art’.

Some like it hot

Mover over umami, spice is here to reign supreme this year with Pinterest predicting people will be reaching for the chilli more than ever in 2021. Popular recipe searches include tomatillo enchiladas, Cajun chicken pasta and Jalapeño pepper jam.

Fancy boards

Millennials and Gen Z will be looking to up their charcuterie board game, expanding beyond cheese and crackers to serve up everything from nibbles to breakfast. Pinterest says we will be seeing boards that present sweets, like lollies and chocolates, desserts and fruit, as visual works of art. Searches have been coming in thick and fast from people wanting to create taco boards, as well as for ‘breakfast charcuterie boards’.

But first, let me take a ‘shelfie’

Looking beyond the taste buds for just a minute, kitchen shelves are fast becoming the most popular corners of the home and are a great way to showcase your aesthetic. Searches are up for collectable and eye-catching servingware, like copper cookware, coloured glassware and clay plates, as well as ways to showcase them, such as floating shelves and plate racks. Also coming in hot as a trend to watch out for is for modern, minimalist kitchens in the ‘Japandi’ aesthetic – where Japanese design meets Scandinavian minimalism.

Celebrate the small things

After a year that felt like the punches just kept coming, people are starting to take time out to celebrate the small things like month-iversarys and date nights, with at-home setups to make someone else smile. Searches for ‘movie date night at home’ and ‘cheers and beers’ parties are both up.

Flashing forward to 1984, and Diana (now played by Gal Gadot) discovers a ‘Dreamstone’ at her work as an anthropologist that seemingly grants whatever the heart desires! Less a sequel to the 2016 instalment, WW1984 instead works as a stand-alone a la the Indiana Jones and James Bond series. Where the original was set in World War I, discussing the evil that mankind performs on itself, WW1984 looks at the globally destabilising effect of greed and selfishness. very successful Marvel template. The 1980s theme is strong with popping colours and noticeable cultural hallmarks like malls, fashion and hairdos. The movie borrows from 1980s family movie lore, referencing Christopher Reeve’s Superman in tone and emotional payoff with big comicbook performances (Pedro Pascal evokes Nicolas Cage, Kristen Wiig is the blooming wallflower), simple moral lessons and a goofy McGuffin: an object that grants wishes at a price! Dramatic themes of love and loss are rehashed from the first movie with the unnecessary return of Steve Trevor (Chris Pine) which stalls Diana’s character growth. Step inside: Official Residence of Switzerland

Ambassador of Switzerland to Australia, His Excellency Pedro Zwahlen and his wife, Her Excellency Yasmine Chatila Zwahlen, share duties in Oceania, two teenagers and a gorgeous Swiss-designed residence in Forrest.

WITH HOME EDITOR, CASSANDRA POWER

Riding an e-bike, keeping bees, job sharing with his wife and solar-charging their expansive 1970s Swiss designed chancery, Switzerland’s Ambassador to Australia is the very model of the modern diplomat. The diplomatic duo – His Excellency Pedro Zwahlen and Her Excellency Yasmine Chatila Zwahlen – share duties in Oceania (minus New Zealand), two teenagers and a gorgeous Swiss-designed residence in Forrest. The work of Swiss architects Hermann Baur and Hans Peter Baur, the chancery and residence are combined in a two-storey, mixed-material ensemble of exposed concrete and brick, sitting atop the highest point of the

considerable-sized property. It’s a mix of open yet quiet and discrete spaces, prioritising both visibility and privacy and grouping the two parts in a central courtyard with architectural themes dating back to medieval monasteries. The sacred buildings of the famous Swiss architect known as Le Corbusier inspired the building design which incorporates brise soleil and singing columns to balance the dignity of diplomatic representations with the modesty and restraint of a small country such as Switzerland. The property’s 1975 inauguration followed the establishment of official diplomatic relations in 1961; however, the two countries connected much earlier.

Swiss consulates opened in both Sydney and Melbourne in the mid-1800s to service a strong Swiss contingency in the Australian colonies. Significant numbers of Swiss immigrants came to Australia from the wine-growing Neuchâtel region, gold diggers from the Italianspeaking Ticino region, craftsmen, and merchants at around the turn-ofthe-century, and the Swiss wives of Polish POWs during the 1950s. By 1972, around 9,000 Swiss were registered at consulates in Melbourne and Sydney. Mr Zwahlen describes the embassy’s concept as “Swiss architecture set amongst the Australian bush” and since his 2017 arrival, he’s gone to substantial

lengths to fulfill that brief. Through research and consultation with Indigenous Australians with knowledge of plants, Mr Zwahlen has introduced masses of indigenous flora into the bush setting including his prized kangaroo paw, native grass, and edible shrubs. But it’s the replanted Grass trees – so old they pre-date European settlement – that make the statement “this is Australia”. Mr Zwahlen said this garden gave him a reprieve from his work duties and was an outlet for his love of nature. Along with restoring the garden to its full conceptual potential, (continued next page)

(from previous page) Mr Zwahlen’s work has a similar motif, as the science enthusiast restores a historic scientific relationship between Switzerland and Australia, the beginning of which is captured in a framed photograph and hangs in the chancery. It’s a photograph of the only non-Commonwealth member of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition of 1911-1914, Xavier Mertz, as he stands in front of a Swiss flag. Being the first Swiss citizen to venture to the Antarctic, he planted it into the Antarctic floor. From Bale, Switzerland, Mertz had joined young Australian geologist Douglas Mawson on his expedition to Antarctica to establish bases at Commonwealth Bay and the Shackleton Ice Shelf in pursuit of Australia’s dominant claim of Antarctic territory. Mertz was a Doctor of Laws from the University of Bern but was

chosen for the expedition due to his experience as a mountaineer and an accomplished skier, having won the ski-jumping championship of Switzerland in 1908, and champion of the world in 1909. Rated as the best mountain climber in Switzerland, he had several first ascensions of the highest peaks in the Alps among his records. Later he devoted himself to scientific pursuits, made a specialty of glacier and mountain formations and received a doctorate in science from the University of Lausanne. Mr Zwahlen said this cooperation mixed the adventurous Australian spirit with the accumulated Swiss knowledge and experience of icy temperatures and timing and scientific measurements. Mertz did not survive the expedition. After a crevasse fall took out a dog team and most of the crew’s supplies, he began a desperate return march on starvation rations. Two-thirds of the way into the journey, on 7 January

The Embassy of Switzerland in Canberra is a two-storey building of exposed concrete and brick, designed by Swiss architects Hermann Baur and Hans Peter Baur.

1913, Mertz died in a makeshift tent. From that grim tale to the grandeur of diplomatic life, thanks to Mr Zwahlen’s work, Switzerland and Australia are back together in the Antarctic as the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD) and the Swiss Polar Institute commit to advancing scientific research of the icy continent.

Mr Zwahlen said the commitment would enable and promote a greater cooperation on a broad range of high-altitude and extreme environments research, including Antarctic ecology, climate change, global sea level change, and ice core science. Find more photos online at canberraweekly.com.au

A larger-scale wicking bed made from an IBC container and with timber edging for aesthetics.

A wicking pot made from an upcycled drum and slotted ag pipe.

Gardening with wicking beds and pots Wicking beds are an increasingly popular growing system which hydrate plants using a wicking (capillary) action. Essentially, they are a self-watering pot. Wicking beds can be closed or open systems: closed systems can be above the ground or partly set into it; open systems are in-ground and open at one end for drainage. They are often sloped for improved drainage. Wicking beds can be made from converted pots, tubs, raised beds or other containers – the options are practically endless. They contain an overflow outlet to prevent

waterlogging and usually have a water reservoir and inlet pipe for efficient fi lling. Wicking beds have many benefits, such as: • Raised wicking beds are suitable for those who fi nd conventional gardening methods difficult. • They are versatile – can be situated on hard surfaces such as concrete, and are also useful for planting near established trees and when dealing with contaminated soils. • They supply consistent

moisture levels meaning bumper harvests and stressfree plants. • They use half the water of conventional gardening styles. Having wicking beds means you can take short breaks without needing someone to water your garden. Potting mediums for wicking beds need to be well-drained and resistant to compaction, therefore, avoid using clay soils. Small-scale wicking beds and pots should be fi lled with premium standard potting mix and larger scale wicking beds

WITH HORTICULTURIST TRACEY BOOL traceyboolgardenwriter.com

can have up to 25% organic matter such as compost added. Top up potting mediums and replace potting mixes as for other gardening methods. Wicking beds are watered through the inlet pipe (if they have one), to prevent surface evaporation and contamination/ blocking of the reservoir. Shallow-rooted plants will require hand watering until established. Australians love grass – kicking a footy, running under a sprinkler, having a barbecue in the backyard and spending time in the garden. Cultivating a perfect lawn – a status symbol to which all could aspire – requires a commitment of time, money and focus. But millions of Australians rose to the challenge in CMAG’s new travelling exhibition, The Blade: Australia’s love affair with lawn, which charts the history, tools and stories behind this passion. Curated by garden historian Richard Heathcote, in conjunction with the Australian Garden History Society, the exhibition explores the history of lawn, from Indigenous land management practices through to modern gardening and lawn innovations. Richard said the exhibition

was a great opportunity to explore this Australian icon and how all its many forms have endured over time. The exhibition runs until 20 February and include paintings, images, videos, associated programs and an interesting selection of tools and lawnmowers. For more: cmag.com.au

Buyers considering lifestyle requirements

2021 looks to be ‘incredible’ for property owners The population of Canberra has done a tremendous job maintaining low infection rates of COVID-19. This has allowed most residents to enjoy living in a relatively normal state with residential property owners, flexible working conditions and innovation the big winners from 2020. This year is shaping up to be an incredible year for those who own property, however, poses critical risks for those unable to understand the speed at which decisions are required. In 2020, restricted operating conditions placed enormous pressure on businesses in hospitality, retail, travel and accommodation to critically review their business models and adapt. Hospitality businesses almost overnight transformed from restaurants and bars into supermarkets serving cook-at-home or takeaway meals, bricks and mortar retailers started trading online, and those with dogs may have noticed some five star hotels began promoting options to holiday with their furry

friend. Locally, innovation from operators of these businesses created new experiences for residents to support and enjoy, however, interstate and overseas travel has become exceptionally difficult due to risk of having to unexpectedly quarantine upon arrival at either the destination or back in Canberra. Overseas travel is not expected to resume until effective vaccination programs are rolled out globally. Domestically, risk of conditions changing in other jurisdictions and inability to travel have saved Canberra households who have remained local what would have been a big-ticket expense. Surplus resources combined with unbelievably low borrowing costs can unlock an enormous amount of potential for property owners to upgrade, renovate and build new homes in 2021, assisted by improved equity positions resulting from property values increasing during 2020, which CoreLogic expects to continue throughout 2021.

Flexible working arrangements are causing people to consider the suitability of their homes. Spaces like studies, breakout rooms and access to quiet segregated spaces have become increasingly popular for those who have enjoyed working from outside of their office. I anticipate changing lifestyle requirements will put pressure on property investors who own older assets to either upgrade their existing investment property or sell and buy more suitable dwellings to attract quality tenants. Those considering a property decision find lack of choice and exceptionally high demand from a broad range of purchaser types is causing values to move quickly. Some buyers taking their time to research the market are finding values are increasing at sufficient speed to cause review of budgets and/or requirements to consider possible compromises after only a short time in the market. For buyers, the solution is to consider your requirements, be prepared with your finances by speaking with your bank or broker, and be ready to act immediately upon finding the right property. Delay only increases competition which, in my experience, results in a higher price.

Canberra’s best investment suburbs The three suburbs around Canberra promising to be the best investment in 2021 are Franklin to the north, Jerrabomberra on the border and Coombs in the developing Molonglo Valley, according to a new report from national real estate agency Upside. Canberran Upside real estate agent Catherine Halloran said each of the desirable suburbs had different qualities making them standouts in a strong market, and the common denominator between them was that they were all designed around convenience and lifestyle. “Jerrabomberra has a lot of space, Coombs is central as far as Canberra is concerned and the Molonglo Valley is still a developing area,” she said.

“Franklin has had an outstanding 12 months, particularly since COVID – but it was already starting to peak before that, largely due to the light rail.” Given a lot of people were spending more time at home and unable to travel, Ms Halloran said buyers were looking for investments in suburbs that were conducive to an enjoyable stay-at-home life. “With a lot of people working from home it matters more.” Although Franklin, Jerrabomberra and Coombs were noted as being suburbs particularly appealing to investors, it was difficult to pick winners in Canberra’s

outstanding property market. “I think at the moment from a selling perspective, there’s really no area that isn’t a good market. “Now that restrictions are starting to ease we’re seeing the retirement market start to pick up again.” Ms Halloran said units and townhouses were “on ice” last year, and experts have seen a small increase recently. When it came to normal residential houses, she said sellers “can’t go wrong”. - Rosa Ritchie For more on this story, visit canberraweekly.com.au

The supreme planet of communication Mercury and its signs of Gemini and Virgo will be ruling Lucy’s affairs in the coming year. This will bring her success through her intellectual abilities, especially any form of writing or speaking. Her imagination will be stimulated, and many incredible ideas will flood her mind. To find true harmony in her life, she will need to be careful of being overly critical with her friends and family; there will be a tendency to expect more from them than they can give.

ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

With Saturn in Aquarius, the focus is on friendships and teamwork. If you are a freelance worker, it is time to step up your efforts. There is a possibility of finding a new objective, one that fills you with enthusiasm and vitality.

Use other people as sounding boards, present them with your ideas and listen objectively to any constructive criticism. With Saturn in your 8th house, the focus is placed on joint property and joint possessions which will need to be sorted out.

The planets provide you with an opportunity to reach a better understanding of those you live with, be it relatives, a partner or flatmate. Those of you involved with property affairs have picked an ideal time and if you’re involved in such matters professionally, you will be doing exceptionally well.

With Saturn in Aquarius, you are best advised to be as self-sufficient as possible, especially when it comes to financial matters. Avoid building up more credit than you can realistically afford. You need to look ahead and think long and hard about career moves.

With Saturn in Aquarius, the focus shifts onto your ambitions and career. It is the steady, plodding, hardworking Taurus who is working towards long-term goals that have been well thought out and carefully planned who will be doing the best. An older person will offer wise advice.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

Saturn in Aquarius puts your focus on learning new approaches to life, to adjusting to new circumstances and to involving yourself with new people. If you resist these changes, you will be left behind. You will be missing out on a great deal unless you become more adventurous.

Saturn in Aquarius places the focus on your health. It’s time to put a stop to excess with food and drink and the disruptive effects it can have on your sleep. At work, it’s time to focus on ways of increasing your prospects for long-range financial security and success.

This is the ideal time for pushing ahead with everything that is important to you. As a Leo, you are always filled with intense desires and can go from one extreme to the other, but try to introduce balance into your life to avoid upsetting loved ones.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV With Saturn in Aquarius, you’ll be spending time and energy on property matters, the home and family. Your responsibilities here will increase; many of you will be working from home, there may be property repairs to attend to, family issues to resolve and older family members could need your support.

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC With Saturn in Aquarius, come to realise some of your ideas are outdated and you need to create a whole new set of rules to live by. This would be the ideal time to update your skills or return to study to add another degree to your resume.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB With Saturn in Aquarius, it is important that you surround yourself with those who deeply appreciate you and who understand your values. Remember, life is too short to be involved with those who are constantly trying to compete with you. Refuse to rise to the bait.

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR With Saturn in Aquarius, it is imperative that you take good care of your health. If you have any niggling concerns now is the time to address them. At work, some of you will be looking at retiring whilst others will be considering retraining. Listen to your instincts and intuition.

My favourite things CHEESE BOARDS AND BOARD GAMES

Photo Kerrie Brewer

Christina and Alan love to get together with friends to play board games and enjoy a cheese board together. She says between work and babies it can be hard to schedule in time to spend with friends, “but it’s always good to catch up with everyone”.

FAMILY Christina and her husband Alan have a one-year-old son, Oliver. “It’s a really nice thing to get down to the level of a one-yearold and see the wonder of the world and watch him discover and explore all these new things,” she says. “He’s always learning, learning, learning and it’s really fun to do that all together as a family.”

Christina DeLay

2020 ACT Young Business Woman of the Year

Christina DeLay was named the 2020 ACT Young Business Woman of the Year at Canberra Women in Business awards night in November. The co-founder and CEO of zero-proof cocktail company Altina Drinks said the award was a “really good surprise after a really tough year”. Christina and her husband Alan founded Altina Drinks in 2018 to offer consumers an alternative to alcoholic drinks that looks and tastes great. Christina said both she and Alan experienced the full brunt of the “Aussie drinking culture” when working in corporate roles, and when she cut back on drinking found it hard to find alternatives to alcohol beyond water and soft drinks. “We thought how hard could it possibly be to make something alcohol-free that actually tastes good?” After a successful crowdfunding campaign, Altina Drinks was born and has continued to grow, moving to a new facility, hiring two full-time staff members during a global pandemic and - Libby Kimber launching a new product.

MOUNTAIN BIKING Christina says her favourite things revolve around family, food and fitness. A keen mountain biker, Oliver has a seat on the back of her bike and the family rides together around the lake. “I think I’ve been [mountain biking] twice since he was born,” she says, and hopes 2021 will see more opportunities.

LA VIE EN ROSE Altina Drinks’ La Vie En Rose is Christina’s favourite of her company’s zero-proof cocktails, with organic hibiscus and rose petals laced with sweet orange. “It’s just so nice to enjoy on a really hot day – now’s the perfect time for it – and have that moment of relaxation.”

YOGA “Yoga falls under the self-care part of things, and just really helps to keep me fit and strong and that’s something that’s really important to me.” Christina says yoga helps to clear her mind and get her into the right headspace.
