This week... From the editor It was back to school in Canberra this week, with lots of parents, carers and children feeling a mix of excitement and emotions – mostly positive, we hope. A former colleague recalled how, the morning after his first day of school, his mother woke him on day two, telling him to eat breakfast and put on his uniform. “But I went to school yesterday,” he protested. One day down, 13 years to go … We’re especially fortunate in Canberra to have access to great educational opportunities – public and private – that must not be taken for granted. In the words of the world’s youngest Nobel Laureate, Malala Yousafzai: “When someone takes away your pens you realise quite how important education is.” We wish students, teachers, all those involved in education, and their families, the very best in the year ahead. And based on the increased volumes of peak-hour traffic this week, it seems not only are the kids back to school but that most employed people in Canberra have also returned to the workplace. So please drive safely, dear readers. Reasons to be grateful this past week include a Sunday brunch catchup, spontaneous dinner with friends, a lakeside walk on a sunny afternoon, succulent nectarines, soaking rain, and the SES volunteers helping to keep our community safe in storm season. Thank you. - Julie Samaras

ACT’s newest public school welcomes first students The first day of school jitters were in full effect across Canberra on 1 February for students and parents alike, as ACT public schools began reopening their doors for the 2021 academic year. It also marked the first day of school ever for Denman Prospect’s Evelyn Scott School, the ACT’s

89th and newest public school. The Molonglo primary school’s original 187 students enjoyed the rare experience of inaugurating the contemporary learning spaces while meeting their teachers and classmates. With a coffee van in the carpark for parents to meet one

another too, the morning ran very smoothly, according to inaugural principal Jackie Vaughan. “We’ve had some parents spying through the window … Our teachers have done a great job of making sure they are feeling settled and calm,” Ms Vaughan said. With her five-year-old son Hemalok starting kindergarten at Evelyn Scott School today, mother Veena Goluguri said it’s an exciting occasion they have waited 18 months for. As local residents, Ms Golguri decided Evelyn Scott School was right for Hemalok after meeting Ms Vaughan. “We could see the passion, the compassion for kids and for education as well, so that’s when we felt this was going to be the start of this beautiful school.” Ms Vaughan was appointed to the role in August last year and said the opportunity to take on the challenge of establishing a newfound school is the fruition of a long-held professional aspiration. “To be able to build and co-

create a greenfield school with our community so that it’s a connected P-to-T school is absolutely a dream,” she said. As the Molonglo region grows, the $47 million zero-emissions facility, named after Indigenous rights activist Dr Evelyn Scott AO, will eventually be called school by 600 K-6 students. The sustainable school comes complete with solar panels, double-glazed windows, and an insulative membrane to aid indoor climate control and keep any smoke haze, like that seen during last year’s bushfires, out of the classrooms. The playgrounds and play spaces have been built sustainably too, with a focus on nature-based play areas and reuse of building materials. An onsite gymnasium with two basketball courts will be online by mid-2021, and in 2023 construction will be complete on the adjoining high school. The end of WA’s COVID-19 dream run and the issue of hotel quarantine Western Australia Premier Mark McGowan this week confirmed a hotel quarantine security guard infected with COVID-19 unknowingly risked community transmission in Perth and surrounding regions for six days from 25 January. The worker visited at least 16 venues while infected with what was confirmed to be the virulent UK strain, posing the first major risk to WA’s impressively clean slate in terms of community transmission. Within 24 hours, 66 close contacts were identified, 11 of whom were deemed high-risk close contacts and moved into hotel quarantine. The general population in WA had been COVID-19 free since the second quarter of 2020, which Mr McGowan attributed to his hard 6

canberraweekly.com.au

domestic border restrictions that began in April 2020. NSW Deputy Premier John Barilaro said the hotel quarantine leak proved WA’s hard domestic border was “pointless”, which Mr McGowan firmly refuted. “Clearly, borders help. I think that is staring us in the face, it’s just common sense,” he said. “Unfortunately, NSW I don’t think has learned that lesson.” On Monday, ACT Chief Health Officer Dr Kerryn Coleman assured Canberrans the scope of the ACT hotel quarantine intake was unlikely to pose a risk to the public. “The ACT only ever have one flight at a time, and we have a break in between,” Dr Coleman said. She noted the ACT and WA quarantine systems were different.

“For example, we will be making sure that daily saliva testing will be conducted on all quarantine workers in hotels.” At 2pm on Monday 1 February, the ACT border closed to nonresidents who had visited a COVID-19 affected area in WA since 25 January. ACT Health granted exemptions for Federal MPs who travelled from WA to attend the first week of Parliament and were considered essential workers. But parliamentarians and members of the public who arrived in Canberra from WA on Sunday evening were not legally bound by a public health order, and Dr Coleman said the people who were in selfquarantine between Sunday evening and Monday afternoon were doing so

out of “the goodness of their heart”. On Monday morning, Federal Attorney-General and leader of the House, Christian Porter, attended a swearing-in ceremony at the High Court and was photographed without a mask. Dr Coleman declined to comment on Mr Porter’s movements, which were legal. Looking to the future, she said a “three-to-five-day stocktake period” when an interstate outbreak occurred would enable good information to be collected, community testing to be focused, and risk management. “The realities of COVID-19 are that we need to continue responding to the challenges as they present,” Dr Coleman said. - Rosa Ritchie

news New schools for Gungahlin, and straight A’s for ACT education New schools will be built in the Gungahlin region, and others expanded, to meet the demands of a rapidly growing population, the ACT Government announced on Tuesday 2 February. A high school in Taylor, 4km from the Gungahlin Town Centre, will open its doors to 800 students at the start of the 2024 school year. The government will allocate $2 million for scoping and design work this year. Six hundred more students will attend the Margaret Hendry Primary School in north Gungahlin from the start of the 2023 school year. Work will begin this year, at a cost of $1 million. Another 800 students from years 7 to 10 will attend a high school in the new suburb of Kenny. The government will spend $24.4 million for supporting road infrastructure and enabling works. The community

will be able to use the school’s multipurpose double gymnasium. The school projects will cost $27.4 million under the 2020–21 budget, Chief Minister Andrew Barr said. Gungahlin is one of the fastest growing regions in Australia, and student numbers in ACT public schools are increasing by 3% each year, Mr Barr and Yvette Berry, Minister for Education and Youth Affairs, said. Ms Berry said the public schools will also be emissions-free, contributing to the ACT Government’s net zero emissions target by 2045. According to the 2021 Report on Government Services (ROGS), published on Tuesday, the ACT has the highest participation in early childhood education and vocational education and training in Australia. More than half (56.6%) of children aged zero to five years attended an

Australian Government-approved early childhood service in 2020 – the highest percentage in the country, compared with the national average of 44%. The ACT Government is making early childhood free for all threeyear-olds under Set up for Success, the government’s plan for early childhood education in the ACT for the next decade, beginning with vulnerable and disadvantaged children. Five hundred places are available in early childhood and education care services, and 100 additional places are available to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander three-year-old children at a Koori Preschool. “This takes the cost of early childhood education away from parents,” Ms Berry said. “It is so important to start the learning journey for a child once they start

primary school.” The ACT Government will also provide scholarships and funding for early childhood educators to obtain deployments and certificates. Early childhood educators are some of the lowest paid workers in the country for the qualifications they have, Ms Berry said; this will make sure their work is valued, and give the ACT the best qualified workforce in the country. ACT students performed better on average than students across Australia in mathematics, scientific literacy, and reading literacy, according to the most recent OECD’s Programme for International School Assessment (PISA) test. The ACT ranked third in reading (Australia ranked 17th), fourth in Science (Australia ranked 18th), and 11th in maths (Australia ranked 30th). news Hazardous lead paint found in Richardson school While the ACT’s education system might be leading the way [see page 8], too many of its schools have residues of lead. On Monday 1 February, parents at Richardson Primary School were notified that toxic lead dust had been found in the school’s heating system over the summer holidays. Built in 1984, the school is one of almost 70 ACT schools built before 1992 that contain hazardous materials such as lead paint, asbestos and aluminium composite panels, Yvette Berry, Minister for Education and Youth Affairs, stated at a press conference on Tuesday. Licensed assessors have cleaned all the affected spaces and declared them safe to use, Ms Berry said. “That means there is no disruption to students or staff in this important first week of school.” During routine maintenance,

lead dust was found in Richardson’s boiler room and in the heating ducts. The heating system has since been sealed and will not be used until safe to do so. Licensed assessors have tested to see if the dust flowed into the adjoining hall, library and learning spaces, and have deemed those areas safe to occupy. “Many buildings, including schools, were built with materials that we didn’t know were hazardous at the time,” Ms Berry said. “We know more now, and as buildings age, we need to manage those materials actively.” Lead paint was widely used in Australia in the late 20th century as a colour pigment, and because it was durable, fast-drying, and waterand crack-resistant. However, lead can cause intellectual impairment; damage to the kidneys, nervous,

reproductive and cardiovascular systems; and even death. Before 1965, lead paint contained up to 50% of the soft metal; between 1970 and 1992, up to 1%; falling to 0.25% in 1992 then 0.1% in 1997, before it was banned in 2010. During last year’s elections, both ACT Labor and the Canberra Liberals promised to remove hazardous materials from affected public schools, after lead paint contamination was found at Yarralumla Primary School, North Ainslie Primary School, and Alfred Deakin High School. The government has committed $15 million to remediate schools that contain hazardous materials. In December, the ACT Education Directorate formed an expert panel of health officials, academics, and safety experts to advise on removal of hazardous

material in public schools. “The safety of students and staff is our priority,” Ms Berry said. In the past two months, the Directorate has reviewed hazardous material registers in every school, assessed the condition of lead paint in every public school where the substance was known to have been used, and developed a plan to deal with hazardous materials. Jeremy Hanson, Shadow Minister for Education, said the number of public schools in Canberra found to contain toxic contamination was alarming, and the result of 20 years of neglect from the Labor-Greens government. “Many Canberra parents, staff and children are deeply concerned; however, there does not appear to be any real action from the LaborGreens government to rectify the situation,” he said. - Nick Fuller

news Online dating is on the rise and so too are ‘ebabies’ How did your parents meet? In the past, familiar answers included: at work, the pub, university or through a friend or family member. But in fewer than 20 years, the most common answer will be ‘online’, according to the first Future of Dating report from Monash University and eharmony released last week (27 January). Using a nationally representative survey of over 2,000 Australians and projections from current trends, researchers pinpoint 2038 as the year more babies – dubbed ‘ebabies’ - will be born to parents who met online than face-to-face. By 2030, at least one in three Australian newborns will be ebabies, and already an estimated 20% of babies born in this millennium are the offspring of couples who met through the web. Researchers say this is remarkable considering just a decade ago, stigma surrounding online dating meant few couples confessed to meeting on the internet – a way of socialising that only took off in earnest at the

12

canberraweekly.com.au

turn of the millennium. The new report says the local pub was a popular place to search for romance in the early 1980s, when one in five couples (around 20%) met at the watering hole - these days just 6% do so. Today, online dating is the most popular way for solo Australians to meet a significant other, with three in 10 (29.4%) of research participants reporting they met their partner online in the past five years. During the same period, 17% met via a mutual friend and 16% met at work. Online dating profiles allow users to reveal their values, interests and personality before striking up a conversation or setting up a date. In a testament to its practicality, almost 50% of Australians agree the digital world makes it easier to find someone compatible. Two-thirds agree online dating has become more normalised, and one in two say the internet makes it easier for introverts to find love.

A new study reveals that by 2038, most singles will meet the parent of their future child online. Image: Getty.

The Monash research suggests online dating allows singles to seek out family inclined partners, given couples who met online between 2014-2020 had 2.3% more babies than those who met in person. The report reveals 21% of online couples who had a baby did so within a year of meeting. - Rosa Ritchie

ACT records second road fatality of 2021 The ACT has recorded its second road fatality, with the death of a 47-year-old man following a single vehicle collision involving a motorbike, in Hennessy Street, Belconnen on Monday 1 February. Members of the public and ACT Ambulance Service paramedics assisted the man before he was transported to hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. ACT Policing’s Major Collision Team is investigating the circumstances of the incident and will prepare a report for the coroner. It is the second death on ACT roads in 2021, with just over a fortnight between the two accidents. The first road fatality for 2021 came on 18 January when ACT Policing located the body of 21-yearold motorcyclist Alex Coppinger, near Paddys River Road in Tidbinbilla, following an extensive overnight and early morning search of the area. In a separate incident, a 38-year-old Watson man will face court on multiple driving charges including speeding, driving while disqualified, driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle, and driving with an improperly

restrained child. It is alleged about 5.55pm on Saturday 30 January, police on mobile patrol on Flemington Road, Harrison observed a Mercedes sedan accelerate aggressively from a set of traffic lights. Police estimate the vehicle’s speed to be in excess of the 70km/h sign posted speed limit. A short time later, police performed a traffic stop on the vehicle on Wimmera Street, Harrison. Checks of police records revealed the driver to be driving while disqualified, and that the vehicle was unregistered, uninsured, and displaying incorrect registration plates. During the traffic stop, police also observed the driver’s twoyear-old child in the rear passenger seat of the vehicle not restrained in an appropriate car seat, wearing only a lap-sash seatbelt. The driver allegedly could not give a lawful reason as to why the child was not secured in an appropriate child restraint. With school returning from holidays this week, police remind drivers to ensure that all passengers are wearing seatbelts, and that any young children are travelling in an appropriate car seat.

Police targeting school zones ACT Policing are targeting speeding throughout the month of February, especially within Canberra’s 40km/h school zones. With Canberra students returning to school this week, both ACT Policing and the ACT Government have reminded road users of the 40km/h speed limit in place for school zones between 8am and 4pm on weekdays. Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman said the number of fines issued in school zones in 2020 fell by almost half, and ACT Policing 14

canberraweekly.com.au

want to see this continue into 2021. “Police will be out enforcing the full penalties for those who choose to speed in school zones, an act which could have lifealtering consequences.” Transport Canberra has asked drivers to be alert and watch for pedestrians in and around school zones, and to remember to park safely and legally. Access Canberra inspectors will also be patrolling school zones to enforce safe driving and parking.

news Spotlight on Sean: ‘The Big Issue’ vendor When Sean became a vendor for The Big Issue, he was experiencing homelessness for the third time and sleeping in a swag behind the hospital in Woden. Soon after, he found a new home and walked in the rain with all his possessions to get there. “I had four bags of dripping clothes. I walked in and it was completely empty,” he said. “I didn’t have a dry blanket and I didn’t even care. “I just laughed and got on the floor and slept like a baby.” From that first night in an empty apartment to the now proud operator of a home veggie garden, Sean says The Big Issue has given him freedom. “Freedom in here”, he says, pointing to his head, “and out there … if you know what I mean”, pointing outside. After a lifetime of tough physical work, Sean says he can’t work “in a warehouse with 60 people”. He says his past belongs in his past, he no longer enjoys socialising or answering personal questions.

“That’s why The Big Issue is good for me,” Sean says. “It lets me be my own boss. “Old blokes like me, and there are plenty of us, just want to be left alone. “The Big Issue is the only thing I can do and be relaxed and be myself. “You can only repair yourself so much later in life.” Sean took a hiatus selling the magazines during coronavirus restrictions, but when it was safe to return, so too did his regulars, and his sales were as high as ever. He said the two disability pension coronavirus supplements – each of $750 – helped him through it and this time around, he even enjoyed his best Christmas since he was 16. He’s worried about JobSeeker payments dropping again in March, saying the low amount was a factor in his own homelessness. “That’s disgusting,” he says. “It should not go one cent lower than it is now. “I was in … one of the cheapest places in Canberra to rent and I was giving them $440 out of my $610 a fortnight.

97 Things You May Not Know About Paying Your Staff Correctly “The most valuable assets of a 20thcentury company were its production equipment,” said management guru Peter Drucker way back in 1999. “The most valuable asset of any 21stcentury institution, whether business or non-business, will be its knowledge workers and their productivity.” As a member-based organisation, we support a broad range of private businesses, the ACT’s key industry associations and many not for profit and community organisations. An important part of the Chamber’s work is helping these smaller employers, who don’t have their own HR or WR specialist, to manage their people and navigate what can be a challenging legal landscape. For example, what the recent changes to casual and overtime clauses in awards mean for ACT businesses has been a common question. The Fair Work Commission recently made updates to the rules about casuals and overtime in 97 awards. The updates are different for each award and the Chamber has talked business owners through how these new provisions work, including whether casuals are entitled to overtime and whether overtime hours will apply for each employee. Small and medium businesses want to make sure their employees receive the correct pay rate. In July 2020, the Fair Work Commission decided to stagger the introduction of the national minimum wage rise to balance the wide-ranging impacts of COVID-19 on the viability of businesses. This means that annual wage increases take effect at different times of the year depending on the industry and the award that applies. Starting to sound confusing? That’s where the support of a business association like the Chamber can help. We assist many local businesses to ensure they are paying their employees at the correct rate, and help them prepare for any wage increases due to come into effect. Another topic we have helped with recently is parental leave. The law was recently changed to provide

employees with access to 12 months of unpaid parental leave for parents impacted by stillbirth or infant death. We appreciate the sensitivity and care that is required to assist a business supporting an employee through such a difficult time in their lives, and have guided employers in making sure leave options are clearly understood and properly implemented so they can support and retain employees. COVID-19 continues to impact businesses in the ACT and around Australia. Border closures, together with ACT Government 14-day quarantine and self-isolation requirements, have caused great uncertainty for businesses when an employee is not permitted to attend work. The Chamber has been giving a great deal of advice about the availability of appropriate leave options in cases where flexible work from home arrangements aren’t in place or are not appropriate. Private businesses and not for profit organisations provide over 60% of the ACT’s jobs. In today’s business world employees are an organisation’s most valuable asset. Helping our members to manage, support and retain skilled people is just one way, as the private sector’s peak body, that Canberra Business Chamber strives to drive the economic prosperity and growth of the ACT through business. Rattenbury confident about ‘bold and progressive’ agenda ACT Greens leader Shane Rattenbury believes the Greens could become the ACT’s major political party in a few years. The October 2020 elections saw the number of Green MLAs triple from two to six. Two of those new members have been given ministerial portfolios; the Greens have formed a coalition government with ACT Labor; and the party now holds the balance of power for the fourth time – a world first. At the same time, the ACT became the first jurisdiction outside Europe with a population larger than 100,000 to achieve 100% renewable energy. Their website boasts the Greens are Canberra’s fastest-growing political party. Last summer’s bushfires were an “eye-opener” for many Canberrans on the issue of climate change, Mr Rattenbury believes. As temperatures soared, so did the number of Greens party members in the ACT. And membership has continued to increase after the election. “I think people see us as an option they can really get behind; we can have a real effect on Canberra politics,” Mr Rattenbury said. Making their inaugural speeches last year, the five new Green MLAs spoke passionately about their desire to save the world, to create a better future, to act on the climate emergency. It has been a steep learning curve, Mr Rattenbury said, but his new team are “going great guns”, and couldn’t wait to get started. Rebecca Vassarotti and Emma Davidson have taken well to the responsibility of a ministerial portfolio in their first term, Mr Rattenbury believes. Both have significant experience in the community sector, in running organisations, and in dealing with

community stakeholders. Although the Greens did not necessarily aspire to a majority government, Mr Rattenbury would like to see a Greens Chief Minister one day – someone like Johnathan Davis, “an eager young Member with lots of energy”. “A few years down the track, with some real experience, there’s no reason why the Greens couldn’t be the major party in a government in this town.” Mr Rattenbury described the Greens’ election platform as “bold and progressive”, focusing on climate change and social inequality. There are big challenges ahead, such as transitioning from natural gas to renewables, while it will take a decade to reduce the 60% greenhouse gas emissions from transport. “But we have a clear target, and I’m confident we can do it.” The Greens also promised to “build a better normal” for Canberra, “redressing the inequalities and injustices of our current systems”, rather than returning to business as usual. “There is a yearning in the community to try to fix some of the problems that have been there for a while, but which perhaps the last 12 months have really shone a spotlight on.” Although many Canberrans have adequate incomes and great lives, others struggle. The Greens are committed to investing in more public and community housing, job security, and income support. Mr Rattenbury encouraged the public to be optimistic. “We can make a difference. Canberra is showing that a better future is possible.” - Nick Fuller Find an extended version of this story online at canberraweekly.com.au

sport Brumbies to host trial against the Force The ACT Brumbies will take on the Western Force in their only Super Rugby preseason trial on Saturday 6 February 5.30pm at Canberra’s Viking Park. The announcement comes after the Brumbies trial match against the NSW Waratahs scheduled for 30 January in Bowral was cancelled earlier this month. Just over 2,000 Brumbies fans will get their first chance to see their side at the Wanniassa venue, before their first home game against the NSW Waratahs at GIO

Stadium on Saturday 27 February. The contest will give the Brumbies a fair idea of what to expect when they take on the Force again in round one of the Super Rugby AU competition on Friday 19 February at HBF Park in Perth (depending on border restrictions). The trial match will consist of three 30-minute periods and it is expected Brumbies coach Dan McKellar will select a strong Brumbies outfit, with the Wallabies representatives to be available.

Canberra Raiders return to NSW Cup in 2021 The Canberra Raiders will return to the NSW Cup under their own logo for the first time in 14 years for the upcoming 2021 season. It is the first time since 2007 that the Raiders will feature in the competition in their own colours after being aligned with the Mounties, who are now affiliated with the CanterburyBankstown Bulldogs. The Raiders NSW Cup squad

will be made up of a mixture of NRL squad members and players who have been training for the Raiders Jersey Flegg (Under 21s) Cup team so far this pre-season. The move also means the Raiders Jersey Flegg team will drop out of the competition in 2021, with a view to possibly re-entering in 2022. Jersey Flegg coach, Peter Marrapodi, will step up to the role of Raiders NSW Cup coach.

Giants fall to Dockers as COVID strikes The GWS Giants have had a tough opening round of the AFLW season, falling to the Fremantle Dockers by 30 points in front of 3,195 fans at Fremantle Oval. The Giants were in the contest at half-time, trailing by just five points before the Dockers proved too strong in the second half to run out 8.10 (58) to 4.4 (28) winners. The match was played just hours before the Perth metropolitan region was forced

into a five-day lockdown after a positive COVID test. The Giants managed to get a flight back to Adelaide before returning to Sydney for the first time since 1 January, where they are in self-isolation until Friday 5 February 9pm AEDT. They were scheduled to play the West Coast Eagles in round two, but the AFL will announce the schedule for their next match in due course.

Vegan vanilla sponge cake by Katrina Meynink Serves 12

Preheat oven to 170°C. Grease and line 2 x 20cm cake tins.

330g flour

Combine the flour, sugar and baking powder in a bowl. Set aside.

320g caster sugar 1 1/2 Tbsp baking powder 1 cup (250ml) vegetable oil 1 Tbsp vanilla bean paste 190ml almond milk 120ml aquafaba (the liquid from a tin of chickpeas) Arils of 1 pomegranate Dried lavender and petals (optional), to scatter 1 Tbsp maple syrup Icing 230g vegan cream cheese, softened (available from most supermarkets and specialty grocers) 80g (1/2 cup) icing sugar, sifted

24

canberraweekly.com.au

In a small bowl, briefly whisk together the vegetable oil, vanilla bean paste and almond milk then slowly pour into the flour mixture and whisk until just combined.

1 Tbsp brown sugar 80g dark chocolate, chopped Fresh cherries, for serving Line the base and sides of a 20cm cake pan with removable base with baking paper. Place biscuits in the bowl of a food processor and pulse until fine crumbs have formed. Add coconut and butter, mixing until just combined. Press into the base of prepared pan and refrigerate until required. Pour boiling water over gelatine and stir. Microwave for 25 seconds until mixture is just boiling. Set aside to cool. Place cream cheese and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer, beat until smooth. Add cooled gelatine mixture and mix in well. Add the melted chocolate, mixing until well combined. Remove from mixer and fold in whipped cream and cherries. Pour over the biscuit base and refrigerate for 2 hours until set and firm. For chocolate sauce, heat cream and sugar in a small saucepan until sugar has dissolved and cream is hot. Pour over chocolate and slowly stir until chocolate is melted and smooth. Allow to sit for 5 minutes before drizzling over cheesecake. Top with cherries.

Place the aquafaba in the bowl of an electric mixer with the whisk attachment and beat for 10 minutes or until firm peaks form. Add the batter and whizz ever so briefly (about 3 seconds) to just combine – enough to incorporate the ingredients, but not so much that the aeration of the aquafaba mixture is lost. Divide the cake batter between the prepared tins and bake for 35 minutes or until the sponges are lightgolden and springy to the touch. For the icing, place the cream cheese and icing sugar in a bowl and whisk to combine. Spread 1 cake with half the icing, then gently sandwich with the remaining cake. Spread the remaining icing over the cake. Top with the pomegranate and dried lavender and petals and drizzle over the maple syrup to serve.

Jaffle apple pies with salted caramel sauce Recipe extracted from Confidence in the Kitchen by Emmylou MacCarthy, Published by Plum, RRP $39.99, Photography by Mark Roper To make the salted caramel sauce, melt the sugar in a saucepan over medium heat. If you haven’t done this before, simply stir with a wooden spoon and don’t panic if the sugar gets a little clumpy. Just keep going until the sugar melts and turns a dark amber. The colour is super important when you’re first starting out, as sugar can burn pretty easily, so keep an eye on it and watch for that gorgeous amber colour.

Serves 4 2 sheets frozen puff pastry Butter, for spreading 385g can pie fruit apples

As soon as it gets to that point, add the butter and stir for 2–3 minutes or until melted. You can use a whisk if you find the butter is separating from the sugar.

Raspberry jam, for spreading

While continuing to stir, add the cream in a thin, steady stream. Cook for a further minute and watch the mixture bubble up in the pan. Remove from the heat and stir through the salt and cinnamon. Don’t skip this step – the salt is what makes it so amazing! Allow the sauce to cool while you make the pies.

Ground cinnamon, for dusting Ice cream, to serve Icing sugar, to serve

Preheat your jaffle maker.

Salted caramel sauce

Get the puff pastry out of the freezer when you’re ready to use it (you don’t want it to go all floppy as it just doesn’t cook as well). Cut each pastry sheet into four squares about the same size as a slice of bread.

220g (1 cup) sugar 70g butter 185ml (3/4 cup) pouring cream

Butter one side of each pastry square and place four of them, butterside down, in the jaffle maker (if your jaffle maker only cooks two at once you’ll need to do this in batches). Spread a couple of spoonfuls of apple over the pastry and add some jam if you want extra sweetness or even just a sprinkle of cinnamon. Place the remaining pastry squares on top, butter-side up. Close your Jaffle maker and give it a good 10 minutes or so, until the pastry is golden. That’s it!

1 tsp sea salt 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Serve the pies with your favourite ice cream and a dusting of icing sugar. Pour over the caramel sauce and get back to the couch!

A proud Queanbeyanite, performer Omar Musa described his hometown as a “land of story and song” and said he’s chuffed to be a part of an event like Good Folk in his backyard.

Singer-songwriter Kim Yang said Good Folk will present a golden opportunity for her to reconnect with her audience following a drought of performing opportunities due to COVID-19. Photos Kerrie Brewer.

Good news folks: ‘Good Folk’ is coming to Queanbeyan What is perhaps the capital region’s best known Easter weekend mainstay will be back this year, albeit in a wildly different form. As tents housing stages and audiences alike would normally pop up across EPIC as part of the National Folk Festival (NFF), this year’s event will instead shift across the border to bring Queanbeyan alive with a vibrant program of indoor concerts and outdoor entertainment as part of Good Folk - a folk experience in Queanbeyan. With the NFF’s 2021 iteration cancelled in October 2020, Good Folk has been planned as a two-day concert series that will look and feel very different to the usual offering. The event will run over a small footprint in the Queanbeyan CBD, featuring 22 concerts across three local venues all within easy walking distance: the Q, Bicentennial Hall, and the Royal Hotel. A dedicated session venue, yet to be announced, will also feature. Activities along Crawford Street will be revealed too, but plans are to have folk dancing, busking and local businesses trading out on the street. A proud Queanbeyanite, performer Omar Musa described his hometown as a “land of story

and song” and said he’s chuffed to be a part of a folk event of this ilk in his backyard. “Growing up, there weren’t really opportunities to perform here in Queanbeyan,” Musa said. “This place, and just the idea of place and where I’m from, plays such a big role in my poetry and my music, but I’d always be doing it in Canberra or interstate or overseas. “Although I try to build in universal themes into my poetry … there is that touch of Queanbeyan in it, so it feels really special to be performing poetry about this place in this place.” Another mainstay of the local music scene, singer-songwriter Kim Yang said Good Folk will present a golden opportunity for her to reconnect with her audience, having been starved of performance opportunities since March last year, like so many other musicians. “I haven’t been able to interact with my audience for quite a while, and I’m a really talkative person on stage. “For me being able to process their reactions, I love being able to observe people when I perform as well.” A Taiwanese-Australian, Queanbeyan was the first Australian city Yang lived in after moving here eight years ago.

Coming directly from the bustling metropolis of Taipei, Yang described the shift as a dramatic change of pace. “When I first came here it took me some time to adjust … I guess I was finding my ground over here in Quenabeyan,” she said. “But the people are lovely, very nice, and very helpful. “They were all very sweet to me, and I just love the history of the town.” Having attended the NFF twice, once as a performer, Yang said she felt she belonged immediately upon entering “because the community sense of the festival is so distinct”. “I had such a great performer’s experience at the festival two years ago, and I’ll love to perform again now for the general public.” Alongside the impressive list of local performers, national acts including 2021 Golden Guitar Awards Female Artist of the Year, Fanny Lumsden, Central Coast trio Little Quirks, and one of Australia’s most enduring musical ensembles, Mikelangelo and the Black Sea Gentlemen, will all be on the bill. NFF managing director Helen Roben described Queanbeyan as an “ideal location” for a “vibrant, innovative folk event”. Roben expressed satisfaction in being able to offer opportunities not just to performers, but to all the support crew across lighting, sound and the other broader industries who help get an event like this together. With the Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council (QPRC) having partnered with the event and helped the NFF’s three-person team get Good Folk to where it is now, Roben thanked the council for their efforts and support. QPRC mayor Tim Overall said councillors unanimously supported the initiative to bring Good Folk to Queanbeyan over Easter. “The last two years have been so difficult for the wider region,” he said. “Queanbeyan has a long history of traditions and cultural heritage.” To find out more, visit folkfestival.org.au - Denholm Samaras

Book talk

Jeff Popple reviews three new crime novels by Australian authors. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com Dead Letters by Michael Brissenden Hachette, $32.99

Canberra journalist Michael Brissenden made an impressive entry into the crime fiction field back in 2018 with The List, and he has now followed it up with the even better Dead Letters. The novel sees the return of world-weary cop and security expert Sid Allen, who becomes caught up in the murder of a prominent federal politician in Sydney. The authorities claim that it was a terrorist attack, but Sid is not convinced, and he sets out with troubled journalist Zephyr Wilde to determine the truth. A first-rate crime thriller with credible and interesting characters, a convincing plot and plenty of excitement.

Shiver by Allie Reynolds Hachette, $32.99

Shiver, by former professional snowboarder Allie Reynolds, sets a high opening standard for debut crime novels in 2021. Set in an isolated ski lodge in the French Alps, Shiver is ideal for those who enjoy clever murder mysteries with a group of stranded characters, lots of old secrets and a mounting sense of unease. The reunion of five friends from a snowboard competition 10 years ago goes terribly wrong when they are trapped at the lodge and the truth about what happened to the sixth member of the group gradually comes out. A chilling thriller that will keep you guessing all the way to the final surprise.

The Spiral by Iain Ryan Echo, $29.99

Finally, Iain Ryan’s The Spiral is probably the most unusual crime novel you will read this year. Erma Bridges is a Queensland academic who is researching choose-your-own-adventure fiction. Her career, however, is under pressure because of a workplace complaint and when she is shot twice by a colleague, her life goes into freefall. With her assailant dead, Erma has no idea what brought on the attack. Desperately she tries to piece together what happened, only to find that a dark undercurrent runs through the university. Combining psychological suspense with elements of choose-your-own-adventure fiction and noir crime, The Spiral goes places you do not expect. Clever, provocative and gripping.

Celebrating love in all its guises

Kath and Kim by John Tsiavis. Courtesy of the artist.

The National Portrait Gallery (NPG) is celebrating love in all its guises, from the romantic to the platonic, with its upcoming exhibition Australian Love Stories. Opening 20 March, the major exhibition is accompanied by Australian Love Stories Online, an interactive exhibition that launched in August 2020. Presenting a selection of significant Australian works from the last two centuries, both the online and physical exhibitions offer a rich insight into what it is to be human. Sandra Bruce, NPG director of collection and exhibitions, said the online exhibition was a way for the Gallery to continue to engage with audiences during its COVID-19 closure. “We had to think about what we could do for our audiences when

people were feeling so isolated,” Ms Bruce said. Australian Love Stories Online allows visitors to navigate their way through a series of portraits and stories – from the enduring to the forbidden, familial, platonic, unrequited, obsessive, scandalous, and creative, the famous, the infamous and the little-known. “When we were talking about it from the perspective of last year, what we wanted to remind ourselves and our audience is love comes in many guises, it’s not just romance. Love is allencompassing and diverse and it can be found in all aspects of our lives,” she said. At the end of the exhibition, visitors receive a ‘love profile’ based on where their love interests led them. “We think it’s a lot of fun. It’s a choose your own adventure,” Ms Bruce said. “Depending on what a person was interested in, they got a score saying what they lined up with.” Drawing on treasures from the NPG Collection and other public and private collections around Australia, the exhibition features more than 200 artworks including photography, painting, works on paper and small objects. than 60 stories are featured for the audience to explore, with a hope to add more in the future. The online exhibition is unique because it will feature some stories and artwork that the Gallery cannot physically borrow. “They will complement each other but they won’t be the same. Some of the online artwork can’t be borrowed for the physical exhibition. In other cases, it will be the same story, but different artworks might be used,” she said. One of Ms Bruce’s favourite stories is that of Australian musicians Archie Roach and Ruby Hunter. Ruby Hunter was a Ngarrindjeri/ Kukatha/ Pitjantjatjara singer songwriter from South Australia. At 16 she met Archie Roach, a Gunditjmara and Bundjalung man who is a prominent Australian musician, author and human rights campaigner. They were inseparable partners for life until Ruby passed away in 2010. “It’s a story of high romance. They were in love with each other from the beginning to end. There was wonderful synergy, like Archie wouldn’t have become the musician he is without Ruby,” she said. Other exhibition highlights include four new portraits of

Sally Ingleton (Acid Ocean) takes us to Australia’s rainforests where logging activities continue. Ingleton spends a year with a group of environmental activists who work tirelessly to monitor, block, and raise awareness of such activities. Seeing the devastation to ancient and beautiful country, it is easy to feel discouraged with accelerated humancaused climate change. Wild Things fortunately shines a light on the ecowarriors hellbent on saving the planet, the successful efforts of activists who came before, and the next generation of school children taking the fight to Australia’s politicians. The young activists are educated and passionate for their cause, risking their safety and liberty by chaining themselves to machinery and keeping a constant vigil high in the branches of the trees they wish to protect. Unlike the previous generation, mobile

technology allows real-time awareness of logging activities and any necessary callouts to join the cause. Unlike the previous generation however, activist numbers are fluid, and the possibility of arrest is cause for concern. Young Swedish activist Greta Thunberg serves as a role model for a whole generation of school children who take to the streets to protest logging and mining operations that hold their futures at risk. By showcasing a lineage of activities that can bring about political change, Wild Things provides real hope in the fight against global warming. Verdict: An inspiring documentary that shows that passion and dedication to a cause can lead to significant change. 3 stars. Wild Things is screening at Dendy cinemas. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

Valentine’s Day WITH HOME EDITOR CASSANDRA POWER

If you’re unhappy with the growth of Valentine’s Day in Australia, your beef is with the Romans – they started it! But rather than the $18-billion worldwide industry that is today’s Valentine’s Day with its chocolate eating, flower gifting, and staring deeply into the eyes of your lover over a romantic dinner, the ancient celebration was more about public nudity and ritual animal sacrifices. Perhaps you could call it romantic that men were then paired with women for a three-day festival from 13 to 15 February after randomly drawing their names out of a jar. History aside, if 14 February doesn’t feel inclusive to you, the following day is the lesser-known Single’s Awareness Day (SAD). Regardless of your choices and fate in love, Canberra Weekly has some things to help you celebrate your day, your way.

Where the old meets the new Griffith 47 Frome Street This cottage in the exclusive Inner South suburb of Griffith perfectly brings together the old and the new, melding the charm of old Canberra with a sleek, modern extension and interior. LJ Hooker Canberra City sales manager and auctioneer Kaylene King says the home has an architecturally designed extension by Environmental Buildings Solutions, which evokes a “such a beautiful sense of two very different styles brought together in a stunning way”. “One of my favourite things is

driving down the tree-lined street and feeling that sense of a longestablished suburb filled with homes of character.” The four-bedroom home exudes luxury throughout, from the character-filled façade and features like the fireplace, to the grand, modern extension. The gourmet kitchen is the heart of the home, with Ceasarstone benchtops, timber accents and soaring, vaulted ceilings. Three of the four bedrooms include walk-in robes and the main bedroom suite also includes a luxurious ensuite.

Through glass bi-fold doors, the open-plan living flows through to the private deck area with spa and electric awning, while the level block boasts lush, low-maintenance gardens. “This is a home for a busy executive couple, who want quality and style but not the drag of a big garden,” says King. “The other possibility is for a more mature couple who don’t want to compromise on living space and quality but need single level and easy-care gardens. “Walk easily to Griffith shops,

bike ride to Manuka, Kingston or the Foreshore. The area offers wellestablished school options.”

property news

Weekly market wrap A strong start to the year for the ACT market

On Saturday 30 January, according to CoreLogic, Canberra recorded the highest capital city preliminary auction clearance rate nationally at 84.4%, ahead of Adelaide’s 83.7% and Melbourne at 83%. This was the first weekend of reported auction results for 2021. Lack of quality stock has resulted in sales prices in many instances far exceeding reserves. Robust market conditions are providing vendors with opportunities to consider selling; however, some suitably ambitious vendors are choosing to continue their time in the market. Rising values are no doubt encouraging for those wishing to hold out for the price of their dreams. Those who have recently started their buying journey face a steep education process, often resulting in considering what suitable compromises might look like. Lack of stock combined with enormous demand has supply and demand dynamics weighted heavily in favour of vendors. In only a matter of weeks, price expectations

change significantly regardless of the property type. Evidence of this can be found in CoreLogic’s Monthly Home Value Index reporting values for both houses and units in Canberra increased in January by 1.3% and 1% respectively. Houses now have a median value of $770,232 and units $477,196. Canberra units generated an annual total return of 11.1%, which was the highest capital city result finishing ahead of Adelaide, 10.2%, and Darwin, 9.8%.

Investor activity could continue to increase in 2021

An undersupply of apartments and townhouses has created a rental crisis. Domain’s December Rental Report confirms Canberra is the most expensive capital city to rent a house or a unit. Rising values and low borrowing costs are increasing the number of people with the capacity to invest. Interstate investors seeking to increase their exposure to Canberra’s economy have become noticeably active in the last eight weeks. I anticipate buying activity from interstate

WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST

and local investors will continue increasing throughout 2021, especially if the ACT Government continues maintaining negligible community transmission rates of COVID-19. I believe 18-to-36-month timeframes to deliver off-plan projects are attractive for investors who exchange contracts to fix their purchase price and have the ability to participate in the market without the burden of holding costs. Those perceiving a decline in unit values upon expiry of the Federal Government’s HomeBuilder Scheme and holding off making their decision until then face the prospect of market conditions disappointing them. Interstate investors used to lower rental yields and higher vacancy rates than Canberra offers have the capacity to be a catalyst for increased competition throughout the duration of 2021.

Canberra house prices hit record high ACT tops HIA Canberra house prices hit a new record high at the end of last year with an increase of 9.1% year-on-year, new figures from Domain’s House Price Report revealed last week. House prices increased more than 6% over the December quarter of 2020 which is the steepest annual gain since early 2017, according to Domain’s senior research analyst, Dr Nicola Powell. Unit prices jumped 3% over the quarter, 1.3% shy of the record high seen at the end of 2019. Dr Powell said Canberra was something of a “quiet achiever” in 2020, emerging from the turbulent year “relatively unscathed”. “While market activity did pull back during the peak of restrictions early in the year, successful containment of the virus and avoiding outbreaks meant an element of normality returned towards the latter part of the year. “The nation’s capital has weathered past volatility well and the local property market

scorecard

again performed to its historic standard.” Nationally, Domain’s data shows house prices across all Australian capital cities except Darwin and Perth hit record highs at the end of last year. Canberra’s growth was second only to Hobart, which saw house prices in the Tasmanian capital increase by 12.4% year-onyear, according to Domain’s data.

The ACT has taken out the top spot on Housing Industry Australia’s (HIA) housing scorecard for the first time since 2014. The scorecard compares the states and territories’ housing markets with respect to a number of indicators such as building activity, renovations, housing finance and migration. HIA ACT and Southern NSW director, Greg Weller, said the ACT saw strong leading indicators such as housing finance and approvals, and was first in the country for both interstate and overseas migration. “A worrying aspect remains in the underperformance of detached housing, with approvals in last place, while commencements is fourth last. “This is no doubt related to the stellar performance of HomeBuilder in other states, but 2020 will also likely reflect the second year running that the monthly average approvals in the Territory have fallen below 100, which is something that needs to be addressed.”

Gorgeous gardens in Gowrie Gowrie 30 Sadlier Street Nestled amongst gorgeous gardens with views over the Brindabellas, this Southside family home is sure to appeal to a wide range of buyers. With open-plan living, myriad outdoor spaces and a segregated main bedroom suite with walk-in robe and ensuite, entertaining and a laid-back family lifestyle can come together under the one roof. The remaining bedrooms have built-in robes and are serviced by a main bathroom with bathtub and separate toilet. Blackshaw Manuka licensed agent Gillian Thorn says the

landscaped gardens and “unique Tuscan-inspired colour palette” sets 30 Sadlier Street apart from other homes, with a paved front terrace that makes the most of the stunning views. “Positioned on the high side of the street with outstanding views, [it has] an ideal floor plan with formal and informal living spaces, abundant natural light and three separate outdoor entertaining areas,” she says. The stunning, manicured gardens boast a variety of fruit trees and herbs, three rainwater tanks

and garden shed. The home’s other features include ducted gas heating, evaporative cooling, double garage with automatic door and instant gas hot water. Sitting close to a number of schools, including Gowrie Primary and Holy Family, and the Gowrie shops, the home has easy access to Erindale Group Centre and the Tuggeranong Town Centre and is close to arterial roads to Woden and the City. Gillian says 30 Sadlier Street is ideal for families looking to buy

into the well-established and highly coveted suburb of Gowrie, which “traditionally does not have a high turnover of properties”.

My favourite things MY KNEEL-SIT CHAIR Like a cat that follows the sun, I tend to write in many different places around the house. Even so, I spend a lot of time at my desk which is why I like to mix up my posture in my kneel-sit chair.

MY YOGA MAT

Main photo Kerrie Brewer Other photos Amelia McInerney

Yoga fixes my body after all the writing and sitting around and unfortunately, is required despite the buttery pencils and the ergonomic chair. In truth, I’d have a photo of a masseuse’s hands here instead of the mat, but alas, I did not have access to one at the time I was taking these photos, which is often the case, especially after forking out for the chair, and the real reason I do yoga.

THE SLIDING DOORS ON MY MINIVAN

Amelia McInerney Children’s author

Children’s author Amelia McInerney recently returned to Canberra after years away, ready to plant roots with her young family and immerse herself in the local writing community. A humorous wordsmith, the mother-of-three has two publications under her belt and another five titles on the way – four this year and one in 2022. Her most recent is My Bird, Bertie, illustrated by Shane McG, which had its Canberra launch at The Book Cow in Kingston last weekend. Amelia’s first career was in the medical field performing ultrasounds, but these days she finds it hard to believe there was ever a time when she wasn’t a writer. - Rosa Ritchie 78

MY FAMILY Unlike everything else on this list*, this ‘favourite thing’ does not enhance my level of physical comfort whatsoever. Still, they made the list and I’m lucky to have them – look how gorgeous my children are! *List in no particular order.

While part of me will probably always be horrified that I drive a people-mover, not a day goes by that the rest of me doesn’t rejoice over having three spacious rows of seating, a socially-distancing aisle down the middle (to help stop the spread of annoyance) and with three young children and an apparent focus on making myself comfortable, perhaps my most favourite thing of all: automatic sliding doors. They are life-changing. There’s two of them on the car and I very nearly listed them twice.

4B PENCILS When I start writing a picture book, I write by hand, in pencil. It has something to do with getting the ideas flowing. Anyway, I prefer soft lead pencils because they’re dark and bold and they glide easily across the page. Way fewer hand cramps with 4Bs.
