This week... From the editor Friends were postulating on the weekend that perhaps the problems arising from hotel quarantine are contained in the word “hotel”; an establishment designed primarily to accommodate travellers, not provide failsafe quarantine during a pandemic. Hence, we probably shouldn’t be surprised or outraged when breaches occur. In previous pandemics, quarantine facilities were set up in more remote areas rather than city centres; think of North Head Quarantine Station in Sydney (away from the CBD) and Bruny Island Quarantine Station off the coast of Tassie. We had the nous to do that over 100 years ago, why not now? So, we felt somewhat vindicated earlier this week when a university expert in infectious disease, Dr Roger Lord, called for a national approach to quarantine, rather than the patchwork of systems that exist now. Dr Lord argues that hotels are not designed to effectively isolate those being quarantined, and that quarantine needs to be undertaken away from denselypopulated cities. Purpose-built facilities might be costly, but breaches are costly and disruptive, too. Reasons to be grateful this past week include a bushwalk at Kambah Pool (the non-nude bathing area), eggplant caponata, fresh produce at the farmers’ markets, yoga, and interesting company, tasty food and the lively atmosphere, dancing and music at the opening of Little Lucifer Mauritian restaurant in Braddon on Friday night. Mauritius! Delicious! - Julie Samaras

news COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine to reach the ACT next week Four thousand Canberrans will be among the first in Australia to receive the Pfizer BioNTech coronavirus vaccine once supplies reach the ACT next week – but most Canberrans will not be eligible for vaccination until mid-year. The ACT will take a phased approach to vaccination in line with the national rollout, ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said on Monday 15 February. Those in the priority group (Phase 1a) include quarantine workers and more than 3,500 frontline health workers, while the Commonwealth Government will simultaneously vaccinate residents of disability and aged care facilities. These people are most likely to be exposed to the risk of COVID-19 transmission, said Rachel StephenSmith, ACT Minister for Health and Community Services. The second phase in March will include elderly people, Indigenous people over 55, people with a medical

condition or disability, healthcare workers, and critical and high-risk workers (defence, police, emergency services). “Healthcare and quarantine workers play a vital role in our response to COVID-19, protecting the health and safety of Canberrans throughout the pandemic,” Ms Stephen-Smith said. “By prioritising the vaccination to these Canberrans first, we can ensure that they can maintain our public health response without putting their own health at risk.” The wider population – including politicians, Mr Barr acknowledged – will not be vaccinated until July. The ACT Government promised to keep the community informed throughout the rollout, working with community organisations and healthcare providers to ensure all Canberrans know when and how they can access the vaccine. “This process will be one of the

biggest logistical challenges the nation has faced in living memory,” Mr Barr said. “There are many operational and communication challenges that every government in Australia faces in safely providing the vaccine to the entire population in the face of global supply issues. It’s a process that is going to take some time.” The ACT Government intends to administer 1,000 vaccinations a week. At first, the vaccinations will be given at the COVID-19 Surge Centre in Garran, which also contains a separate testing facility. As the government obtains more, vaccines will be administered through general practices, GP respiratory clinics, Aboriginal-controlled

community health services, and ACT Government-run vaccination clinics. The vaccines will be free. The ACT Government has budgeted $19 million for the vaccination program (plus $4.5 million in capital funding). Canberra Health Services will also vaccinate Emergency Department staff at Yass and Queanbeyan District Hospitals. Until vaccination is widespread, Mr Barr urged Canberrans to continue their COVID-safe behaviours, including using the Check In CBR app (downloaded by more than 335,000 people). Labor proposal to decriminalise hard drugs The time has come for ACT drug laws to reflect contemporary values, ACT Labor MLA Michael Pettersson argued last week (11 February), introducing his bill to decriminalise possession of small amounts of hard drugs. “This bill aims to give people the support and help that they need, instead of being unnecessarily put through a criminal justice system not designed to provide health care,” Mr Pettersson said. The motion to amend the Drugs of Dependence Act 1989 follows Mr Pettersson’s successful bill last year to decriminalise personal possession of cannabis. “I believe the decriminalisation of small quantities of drugs better allows us to treat drug use as a public health problem. This is a common-sense step forward that will continue the ACT Government’s track record of helping those in our 6

canberraweekly.com.au

community who need help.” At present, possession of drugs of dependence or prohibited substances can incur 50 penalty units, a two-year prison sentence, or both. Mr Pettersson said instead of penalising people who use drugs with a criminal conviction, offenders would have their drugs confiscated, be made to pay a fine, and be referred to a medical professional. “The community has moved on from the war on drugs, and it’s time to move on from criminalisation,” he said. “We know that the traditional ‘just say no’ approach hasn’t worked.” If the reform were successful, users would be able to possess: up to 2 grams of cocaine, ice, heroin, amphetamine, methadone, methylamphetamine, or psilocybin; 0.5 gm of ecstasy; or 0.002 gm of lysergic acid or lysergide (LSD). These possession thresholds fall

beneath traffickable thresholds set by the Federal Government (which did not reflect lived experience, Mr Pettersson thought). More than 43% of Australians over 14 had used an illicit drug, Mr Pettersson said; the threat of jail time and a criminal record did not deter people from taking drugs. Since announcing his bill in December, he said many in the community had supported his proposal: addicts afraid to seek help for fear of criminal justice repercussions, grieving parents who lost children to drugs, experts and researchers who want to see laws changed, and law enforcement representatives. Last year, Mr Pettersson’s bill to decriminalise cannabis received tripartisan support. “People who need to seek treatment for drug use are now able to access that help free of

the spectre of the justice system.” Conservatives feared the bill would increase drug use, but cannabis usage, drug driving offences, and cannabis-related hospital visits had not changed. Moreover, cannabis offences had decreased by 90%, freeing police time and resources, Mr Pettersson said. The amendment would also protect drug users from potentially lethal substances. “More often than not, these illicit drugs are cooked up in terrible circumstances in bikies’ bathtubs with no safety measures or precautions,” he said. “If people choose to consume drugs regardless of the health or legal risks, we as legislators have a responsibility to ensure that where we can, we reduce the harm.” The debate has been adjourned. - Nick Fuller

news ACT Government rejects call for racism investigation in ACT prison A proposed investigation into systemic racism at the Alexander Maconochie Centre will not take place, angering and disappointing Indigenous and social service advocates. Elizabeth Kikkert, Shadow Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, moved last week for an independent external review into institutional and systemic racism at the prison. This motion was put forward on behalf of the Indigenous community. Last month, an Aboriginal woman prisoner – a rape survivor – alleged that she was strip searched in front of male prisoners. In recent years, it has been alleged staff have played ‘Hangman’ with the names of Aboriginal prisoners; Aboriginal inmates have been assaulted, and relatives were not notified; and an

Indigenous man – victim of a bashing that left him in a coma for a week – died of a drug overdose in 2016. Mick Gentleman, Minister for Corrections, amended the proposal to remove all reference to the AMC; instead, the government will continue with its review of Indigenous overrepresentation in the criminal justice system. ACT Labor and Greens MLAs supported this amendment. “The rate at which they and their kin are locked up is not the only issue for First Nations people in Canberra,” Mrs Kikkert said. “The actual experience of incarceration is a major issue as well.” Mr Gentleman, however, argued that the broader issue of overrepresentation could not be solved by focusing on one part of the justice system, but through a whole-

of-government approach and an Indigenous-led review. He said ACT Corrective Services were committed to addressing overrepresentation through maximising culturally representative practices and rehabilitation. But the Canberra Liberals believe that merely proceeding with a review into overrepresentation was not enough. “Abandoning those on the inside, sweeping racism under the rug; this whole debate is a distraction from the issue within the facility of the AMC,” Mrs Kikkert said. Indigenous advocate Julie Tongs OAM, CEO of Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health and Community Service, said she was “furious, to be quite honest”. “It reinforces the belief across the Aboriginal community that their issues and concerns are not a priority with this so-called progressive government.” Indigenous overrepresentation and the inquiry into AMC were separate issues, Ms Tongs argued.

“The review of overrepresentation is about the reasons Aboriginal people are sent to prison at a rate of five times higher than non-Aboriginal people. It has nothing to do with racism in the AMC; the review hasn’t started, and will drag on for years.” ACTCOSS chief executive Dr Emma Campbell was also disappointed the motion was unsuccessful. “We need to understand whether issues of racism are impacting the experience of Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander people when they’re in the AMC, and whether that’s leading to higher levels of recidivism and the high rate of incarceration.” The Government may have stopped the amendment – but Ms Tongs was undaunted. “At the end of the day, I’m not going to stop. Now that woman was brave enough to come out with her allegations, I am sure there will be others that will follow. Hopefully, this will get momentum and, hopefully, things will change.” - Nick Fuller

news UN Women Australia says let #WomenLead Accelerating progress toward gender equality is at the top of UN Women’s agenda, and this year the global champion for women and girls chose the International Women’s Day (IWD) theme ‘Women in leadership’. UN Women Australia executive director Janelle Weissman told Canberra Weekly the theme shone a light on the importance of having a diverse range of women’s perspectives around decision-making tables. “Representation matters. Women and girls have enormous contributions to make, bringing different experiences, perspectives and skills to the table, making decisions, policies and laws that work better for everyone,” she said. The World Economic Forum estimates that at the current rate of change, it will take 99.5 years to achieve gender equality across the world. Only 30% of parliamentarians in Australia are women, making the ACT Legislative Assembly an outlier with a majority female Assembly and Cabinet. Ms Weissman said increasing the number

of women in leadership positions globally would “create more profitable and productive economies, flourishing businesses and a healthier and more peaceful planet for everyone”. IWD is an opportunity to reflect on issues of gender-based inequality at home and overseas. “If we think about the name, International Women’s Day, it is one day out of 365 that we’re calling on all of us in Australia to focus our hearts, our minds and our attention to the status of women across our borders.” UN Women’s IWD lunch in Canberra on Friday 5 March will raise funds for ‘Markets for Change’, an initiative that works with female market vendors in Solomon Islands, Vanuatu and Fiji. Money raised will equip markets with toilets and clean drinking water, and provide secure accommodation for women who travel far from home to sell produce and crafts. Ms Weissman said the initiative created spaces for women in the Pacific to develop skills as entrepreneurs, build strength as leaders and

increase representation in the associations that govern the markets themselves. “So that women can inform and shape policy and practice that has a real impact on their working environment, but also on their livelihoods.” For a list of IWD events in Canberra, visit the What’s On page at canberraweekly.com.au - Rosa Ritchie

news The campaign tackling violence at universities Readers are advised that this article contains discussions of sex and sexual assault. Envisioning a world where Australian universities are free from sexual violence and stigmatisation, The STOP Campaign began in Canberra with the mission of creating positive change through education and empowerment. Founded in 2018 by Camille Schloeffel, an Australian National University (ANU) alumna who noticed the university was lacking support and resources for sexual violence prevention and education, the Campaign aims to create and sustain positive change by igniting conversations and breaking down stigmas surrounding all aspects of sex and sexual violence. survivors to be heard on campus, many of the Campaign’s members are from the ANU; however, the ultimate goal is to spread the message Australia-wide, creating conversation about sexual violence at universities and ultimately changing university policies. Campaign manager Bianca Nicotra said The STOP Campaign has grown significantly since its beginning. “Camille started the campaign from within her Hall to let people know that it was an important issue and something that needed to be focused on,” Ms Nicotra said. “It all started from one student almost three years ago, and now we are an official not-for-profit with more than 20 passionate volunteers.” Lead events coordinator Audrey

Audrey Mims and Bianca Nicotra joined The STOP Campaign after noticing something was missing from ANU’s policy surrounding sexual violence. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.

Mims also noticed that something was missing from ANU’s policy surrounding sexual violence and joined the Campaign to help survivors feel empowered and safe. Ms Mims is leading The STOP Campaign’s Empowerment Program, a six-week program designed to provide a safe space for cisgender and transgender women and nonbinary people in the community. The pilot program commences in February and aims to cultivate growth, foster empowerment, and

build a supportive community. “I think it’s an ambitious program but it’s something that has been created out of a need … we didn’t have a program like this. We see it as really important and vital to the success of young people at university and it’s something we need to overcome; this stigma and this lack of empowerment for survivors.” “Our main goal is for survivors to be believed and for them to feel empowered and respected,” Ms Nicotra said. - Erin Cross

news Over a century since Walter Burley Griffin won the prize to design Canberra, experts agree it is time to learn more about his colleague and wife, Marion Mahony Griffin, whose hand drew the first plans of our capital city. Born on 14 February 1871, this year marks the 150th anniversary of her birth. To celebrate, a collaborative program of ‘Magic of Marion’ events organised by the National Capital Authority and leading cultural institutions is scheduled from February through to August. Known for her talent for architectural drawing and determination, Marion was one of the first registered female architects in the world when she married Walter in 1911. According to Australian Institute of Architects ACT president, Shannon Battisson, it was at Marion’s insistence that they entered the Commonwealth Government competition to plan Canberra. “Walter thought it would be too hard to do from so far away,” Ms Battisson said. “I think it’s safe to say it’s those incredible artworks that really helped win the competition for them.”

Marion and Walter moved to Australia in 1914; however, she drew technical plans of Canberra long before setting foot on Australian soil. “What I think is so incredible is her renderings are so accurate but she’d never seen the country,” Ms Battisson said. “She had surveys and that’s all she had to go off. And yet, they are magically like our city.” In 1894, Marion was the second woman to graduate from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with an architecture degree, going on to become Frank Lloyd Wright’s first employee. Ms Battisson said she saw Marion’s influence everywhere she looked. “A lot of the character and nature of Canberra that we love, the bush, the fact that the mountains are used as part of the access, is really strongly linked, I would think, to her upbringing. “Being part of the nature around her was a huge part of who she was.” On her final visit to the Australian capital

news Katie Noonan named National Folk Festival artistic director Acclaimed Australian musician Katie Noonan has joined the National Folk Festival (NFF) as artistic director. Working toward presenting her inaugural festival in 2022 (the 2020 and 2021 events were cancelled due to Coronavirus), the part-time role will require Noonan spend one week in Canberra each month working with organisers to shape the event’s program. Speaking to Canberra Weekly at the NFF’s Mitchell offices, her first day on the job involved finally meeting key stakeholders, like Festival

managing director Helen Roben face-to-face. The charming and affable Noonan said having finished up her five-year artistic directorship of the Queensland Music Festival in 2019, she was keen to continue with similar work. “I love getting to know a community, getting to work with such a beautiful, long-loved construct like the National Folk Festival,” she said. “It just felt like a beautiful group of people whose intentions are very much aligned with my intentions of music and community.” With a long time between now and Easter 2022, Noonan is confident she can deliver a robust program regardless of the circumstances. “I’m an improvising musician, so I’m used to improvising,” she said. “So, we will just see how we can evolve, whether that involves international artists or not. “I would very, very happily program an entirely Australian festival … There’s a perception that people from overseas are better than us, and they’re just not.” The inaugural folk festival was held in 1967, and Noonan’s first festival as AD next year – she played

it in 2012 - will mark 30 years of the ‘folkie’ being permanently based in Canberra. Through her creative programming, Noonan will look to honour the history of the festival while looking to highlight “all the colours of Australia today”. “It’s important to preserve what we know and love about the folk festival, which is obviously fairly traditional folk, a largely Euro-Celtic tradition,” she said. “I love that music, but the Australia that this festival was dreamt for was in 1967, and the Australia of 2021 is vastly different. “I’m very passionate about First Nations engagement … for me I don’t feel you can have a National Folk Festival and not have a genuine First Nations program.” Having played countless gigs in Canberra throughout her career, Noonan is fond of the city and maintains strong connections here. “I’ve had some of the best gigs of my life in Canberra … but also a lot of my musician friends have lived here,” she said. - Denholm Samaras

news Award-winning TV series ‘Adventure All Stars’ to support Canberra charity Heart Support Australia is working with Australia’s newest travel and adventure TV series, Adventure All Stars, to find Canberran cast members to star in the show. Adventure All Stars is the ultimate six-day road trip where TV viewers get to experience incredible locations through the eyes of the cast. Heart Support Australia is continuing to work with the producers of Adventure All Stars to find more cast members to undertake a potentially lifechanging journey. Heart Support Australia communications and media manager, Deepti Sharma, said it “would be great if people can put in the effort to be a part of the program”. According to Heart Support Australia CEO Judy Ford, being nominated as the first Canberra charity to participate in Adventure All Stars was “fantastic”, with all the proceeds going towards support work for Australians diagnosed with heart disease. “I was thinking we need to do some fundraising. We’re very small; it’s only two of us full-time and

we’ve got two part-time people and that’s it,” she said. Pre-filming, those participating in Adventure All Stars will raise a minimum of $10,000 for Heart Support Australia. “All of that money goes to us,” Ms Ford said. “My dream is to put someone on staff that can be on the telephone line 24/7. At the moment, we have someone that can only answer questions three days a week and not even full days.” Heart Support is a national support organisation for people with a heart condition, their families and carers, offering support, encouragement and information based on their own experience. By offering on-the-ground support across the country, they hope to help those who have been affected by a heart event. Kevin Bhadra, director at digital marketing agency Fiber, is excited to be participating in the show. “Looking at what happened last year … I really felt like whatever I could do to support any sort of

Business calls for more input expanded program. His comments follow the Canberra Liberals calling on the ACT Government to conduct an independent review into the trial, labelling it “a failure”. “The government must stop wasting taxpayers’ money and actually ask small business what they need before spending more on this failed scheme,” Shadow Minister for Business Leanne Castley said. Minister for Business Tara Cheyne defended the program, touting figures that for every dollar of government investment during the trial, $6.30 was injected into the ACT economy, resulting in over $1.9 million of local economic stimulus. “The internal analysis, based on feedback from businesses and consumers, will be completed this week and will inform the full rollout of the scheme,” she said.

The Canberra Business Chamber has called for further engagement with local businesses before an expanded $2 million ChooseCBR discount voucher scheme launches later this year. Canberra Business Chamber CEO Graham Catt said December 2020’s $500,000 ChooseCBR trial “did not achieve the outcomes we would have hoped for”, with “significantly less take-up by both businesses and customers than originally anticipated”. “The feedback we’ve received from small businesses highlighted a general lack of awareness of the voucher scheme by business and customers,” he said. “It clearly needed a much more effective communication and marketing program.” Mr Catt encouraged the ACT Government to engage further with small business before rolling out an

sport Brumbies head coach Dan McKellar has extended with the club until the end of the 2022 and is keen to continue building on the success he’s achieved in the capital since taking the reins in 2018. McKellar made the announcement a week before his side kicks off their title defence against the Western Force for round one of the 2021 Super Rugby AU season on Friday 19 February in Perth.

He described the decision to stay in the capital as a no-brainer. “There was absolutely no reason to consider going anywhere,” he said. “I don’t think coaches are too different to players; you like to have all the off-field business sorted out so we can just focus on what’s important, and that’s February 19.” 2021 will be the 44-year-old’s fourth season in charge at the club with the side winning the inaugural Super Rugby AU title last year.

Guler re-signs with Raiders Canberra Raiders front rower Emre Guler has signed a two-year extension to stay with the club until the end of 2023. The 23-year-old’s best season came in 2019, which saw him feature in the Raiders Grand Final side. He was also named on the bench for the U23 Junior Australian side. He began 2020 in strong form before a serious ankle injury ended his season after just eight matches. Guler said he was looking forward to getting back on the park this season, although acknowledged it will be a challenge to secure a spot

in the starting 17. “I’m really happy to get it done,” said Guler. “I just want to look forward to training hard and getting myself ready for round one.” “It’s good to get it out of the way and focus on footy now. “You look at the [forward pack] on paper, there are such good names there. “It’s going to be a tough year, there’s a lot of competition and you can just tell that here at training. “I’m hoping to have a strong trial and put myself in a position to get back into the team,” he said.

Giants get on the board The GWS Giants have recorded their first win of the AFLW season with a 10-point win in wet conditions at Blacktown Stadium, NSW on Saturday 13 February. Scoring was made difficult with consistent rain around, but two first quarter goals was enough for the Giants to squeak by 2.18 (18) to 1.2 (8).

Alyce Parker was again the standout for the Giants with 24 disposals, six clearances and five tackles, while Giants skipper Alicia Eva and Taylah Davies were the goal scorers. The Giants next match is against the West Coast Eagles at Blacktown on Sunday 21 February 5.10pm.

Kyrgios exits Australian Open After leading two sets to love, Canberra product Nick Kyrgios went on to lose to third seed Dominic Thiem 4-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 in the third round of the Australian Open men’s singles on Friday 12 February. On Saturday,

Kyrgios combined with Thanasi Kokkinakis in the men’s doubles to trump Lloyd Harris and Julian Knowle in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, before losing to fourth seeds Wesley Koolhof and Lukasz Kubot 6-3, 6-4 on Sunday.

An earthy, palpable portrayal of Australian wildlife in response to last summer’s bushfires is one of 79 works shown as part of Craft ACT’s Emerging Contemporaries exhibition. Akka Ballenger Constantin, a CIT Visual Arts graduate, is one of 14 participating artists in the showcase. The opportunity to participate presented itself after her work was displayed in the 2020 CIT Visual Arts graduation exhibition. Craft ACT awarded Constantin for her efforts, with part of the prize being the opportunity to showcase her work in their exhibition. “That was a bit unexpected,” she smiled. “Like everyone else, I just wanted to graduate and feel proud of the body of work I made.” The work displayed is part of a project called The Lost Ark that Constantin started last year, comprising drawings, linocuts and etchings responding to the 2019-20 bushfire season and its impact on Australian flora and fauna. “It was a sobering moment where I felt like we didn’t have any timeframe to actually process, understand or even grieve what happened after last summer’s fires,” she said.

“It was the fires, then the hail, then Covid … and then towards the end of the year when we started to work on our grad show, I thought ‘well, what am I going to do for my final body of work?’. “I am an art educator, I work will children, and I thought this would be a good way to educate the children of tomorrow.” Tying into the themes of Constantin’s project, for her graduation exhibition she made a QR code displayed beside her works that allowed people to donate directly to Wildlife ACT and Wildtalk. “These two places really need people’s help,” she said. With her work in the Emerging Contemporaries exhibition depicting a native bird drawn on a gum leaf, Constantin had an abundance of supplies for the project as she lives beside grasslands. “I usually like to start drawing on the leaves while they are still green,” she said. “Once they start drying out, if you’re using fine liners or pigment liners there is a chance that your tip will go through the leaf. “I build the image in black in the

With a background in photography, film and journalism, Constantin’s artistic practice now comprises drawing, printmaking, painting and poetry. It was in 2018 that Constantin decided to pursue a formal education in art by way of CIT’s Visual Arts Diploma. “I thought maybe now I’m old enough to go for what I want … My family really supported me,” she said. “I wanted to learn how to do things properly and I knew that out of everyone else, at CIT I would have the opportunity to get hands on. “I wanted to get my hands messy,

and they have beautiful workshops … It was really great for me to learn how to do things properly.” Born in Romania, Constantin has lived in Australia since 2007, and moved to Canberra in 2008. Swapping the mountains of her homeland for the grasslands of Canberra, she said she loves the quality of life here. “It’s just a good fit. I grew up on a farm in the middle of the mountains, and I guess here you have the best of that. “There’s a lot of new architecture, but there’s also that connection to nature. “I don’t feel the coercion of the concrete, you know the city can just squish you in, but here that’s not the case, it’s beautiful.” Craft ACT’s Emerging Contemporaries exhibition is on display now until 20 March; craftact.org.au

juncture in his, and his friends’ lives, they are missing a step; all are good men with families and careers who lack the zest and confidence of their youth. It is with a discussion about how history would have developed without the influence of alcohol that propels the group into an experiment to enhance their professional and personal lives. It is once the group agrees to push the limits that things

start (predictably) to go pear-shaped and their respective issues are pushed to the fore where they can no longer be ignored. Verdict: A strong concept that is easily translatable to a myriad of global drinking cultures, that ultimately holds a confusingly mixed message. Mikkelsen, however, is terrific! 4 stars. Oxford 1863. A young man named Samuel Speed sets a barley stack on fire, hoping to spend a night in prison. Instead, he is harshly sentenced and sent to the penal colony of Fremantle, the last convict ever transported to Australia. Forced into hard labour, Samuel is destined to lead a harsh and unforgiving life, one that will resonate through the ages. Bestselling Canberra author Anthony Hill has come up with another intense story that follows a fascinating Australian historical figure. Meticulously researched and set to the vivid backdrop of colonial Australia, this is a fascinating and enjoyable novel. 32

Sometimes people leave, they go away, and you don’t see them anymore. And then sometimes they come back. LAMB is the story of one family on an Australian sheep farm, over generations — the guilt of those who left; the lost desires of those who stayed behind. It is a story of the land, and of lies told and secrets kept to protect those we love — and to stop them from leaving us.

An absolute heart warming joy. A play about family, the land and being the one who stays. BOOKINGS 02 6285 6290 THEQ.NET.AU

Get outdoors

Kids’ health and fitness in 2021 In this week’s column, the focus is on children’s health and fitness. During 2020, I noticed a lot of kids dealing with changes like less outdoor time and the temporary cancellation of team sports. For kids, it’s great to encourage movement – and lots of it! This keeps them healthy and encourages growth – mentally, emotionally and physically. Teaching kids how to do basic movements that are safe and help the body develop and grow is the way they should train until they

are physically ready to move onto a beginner’s weights program, if they choose. Something that would be great to encourage this year are walks, jogs and bike rides, all of which are great for spending time together and having a chat about what’s going on in their world, as well as to focus on their health and fitness. I find that mixing up the activities is a great way to keep them interested.

Use your body For this body weight workout, all you need is a bench. • 3 mins step-ups • 1 min standing squats • 30 secs toe taps, each leg • 3 x 10m hopping, each leg • 1 min push-ups • 1 min seated overhead punches • 1 min dips • 3 min step-ups

Head down to your local park or you can do this from your own backyard. This one is a great cardio exercise. • 10 min bike ride around the park or block • 10 min walk around the park or block • 10 min jog/run around the park or block When you’re done, make sure you finish with the following stretches: • Hamstrings: sitting with one leg out straight, slide your hand down the straight leg and hold for 20 seconds, repeat on the other leg • Back rolls: lying on your back, knees to your chest, roll your legs left to right slowly for 20 seconds • Quads: standing, hold your ankle and pull it up to your buttocks and hold for 20 seconds, repeating on the other leg

Treat the cause of your condition, not just the symptoms.

Home on the road: Canberrans embrace #vanlife WITH HOME EDITOR, CASSANDRA POWER

Southsiders Shelly and Kate, along with their baby girl and two Australian Shepherd dogs, are a family of travellers. After 17 months of “planning, designing and hard work”, the next chapter in their book of adventures will be in a Nissan Civilian bus, converted into their dream mobile home. They describe their bus “Renwick” – named after the street of their first rental property together in Redfern, Sydney 12 years ago – as “absolute luxury”. “We have done a heap of research and chosen each detail specifically for our bus,” Kate said. “Shelly is a bit of a perfectionist and has completed the entire build herself with a lot of trial and error, YouTube, and reading countless posts on the Instagram #vanlife community.” Kate made all the seat covers, curtains and upholstery. “The only part of the build we haven’t done ourselves is the electrical work; we got the professionals for that.” Keen to support the South Coast communities 38

canberraweekly.com.au

affected by bushfires and COVID, and to be near to home in case of any kinks, Shelly and Kate’s first few trips will be close to Canberra. “We love the concept of the @emptyesky movement,” Shelly said. “The idea is to take an empty esky or fridge and fill it up at a local community.” The women were inspired to join the #vanlife movement in 2019 following a “tough and challenging” couple of years. As torrential rain flooded their tent and annoyed their dogs on a “getaway gone wrong” at the NSW Mid North Coast, the cooped-up Kate and Shelly contemplated options for a permanent set-up as they worried about the tent roof caving in on them. “It took some life-changing events for us to realise that work will always be there, but family and friends might not,” Shelly said. “So, we decided to put holidays, family time and self-care first and spend time doing what makes us happy.”

A week later they had a 22-seater bus in their driveway! “As a young family, we want to make the most of travelling opportunities and see as much of Australia as we can,” Kate said. “We want our daughter to grow up valuing the simpler things in life, all that nature and Australian communities have to offer, and visit our friends and family along our way. “Our bus conversion has provided us a new focus and hobby, time spent together working on something, and it’s a great conversation topic. “There have been tears, frustrations and delays along the way but they’ve all been solved with some patience and creative solutions that come with a bit of trial and error. We feel that everything has a solution, it’s just a matter of finding it!” Follow the journey of Kate, Shelly, their baby girl and dogs @renwickontheroad and get in touch with CW if you have any recommendations or are thinking about starting your own bus/van conversion journey.

An exceptional family sanctuary Bungendore NSW 36 Essendon Road This prestigious property in Bungendore sits on 1.14 hectares of country estate, just five minutes from Bungendore Village and 15 minutes from Queanbeyan, and with an 80-acre community-owned recreation area. “This custom-built family entertainer celebrates the natural beauty of its country estate setting with panoramic views, creating a captivating backdrop to its streamlined interiors,” says McGrath North Canberra licensed agent, Michael Fay. “Inspired architectural craftsmanship has resulted in this exceptional family sanctuary that unveils every conceivable luxury.” Fay says the vast interiors, complete with a spectacular entrance foyer, are perfect

for modern family life or for entertaining in style, while the indoor pool, gym and sauna are the “icing on the cake”. “The grand entrance gateway leads to a hot mix asphalt driveway and serene water fountain adjacent to the entry portico.” He says this is the perfect home for families looking for a prestigious home in which to entertain both inside and out, or for families looking for space, which, with 800sqm of indoor and outdoor living space, this home delivers in spades. “Commercial construction techniques were used in the construction of this home,” Fay says, “double brick walls, double glazed windows and the upper floor is a 150mm concrete suspended slab”.

This exceptionally grand home boasts a chef’s kitchen with walk-in pantry, two study areas, enormous main bedroom suite with walk-in robes and ensuite and an enclosed alfresco area with built-in pizza oven, just to name a few of its standout features. “They just don’t build houses like this anymore.”

Weekly market wrap Another week of strong auction results for Canberra

Will Canberra see an increase in migration?

Strong auction results during the week ending 14 February saw CoreLogic report a preliminary auction clearance rate of 91.23% for Canberra. This was the highest result nationally ahead of Adelaide’s 89.47% and Melbourne at 87.79%. A high proportion of results in Canberra were confirmed at the time preliminary figures were released; however, in Melbourne final figures are expected to revise down due to cancellation of scheduled auctions as the city entered another mandatory lockdown. Consecutive weeks of clearance rates exceeding 90% indicate market conditions are amid a strong growth cycle. Without unexpected intervention taking effect prior to the end of the month, I expect to see reporting confirming house values increased throughout the month. Those seeking established properties face a daunting prospect where values are increasing quickly. If a first inspection of a property was several weeks prior to auction, by the time of the auction and those buyers are ready to bid, prevailing conditions would have caused market perceptions of value to increase resulting in a higher sale price being achieved.

Be it good fortune, good management or a combination of both, Canberra has emerged as a global leader in management of COVID-19. Reported cases have been nominal and did not result in widespread community transmission, allowing Canberrans to live a relatively normal existence, albeit with far more QR codes and hand sanitiser than anyone could have imagined just over a year ago. High paying jobs, low unemployment, affordable housing as a proportion of family income, good schools and a fantastic lifestyle enhance the attractiveness of living in Canberra, nationally and globally. With the rollout of Coronavirus vaccines imminent, will Canberra be a net benefactor of a surge in migration? In this scenario, a sudden increase in population would act like dousing a fire with kerosene to our already hot property market.

Lead dust found at OBDM site Lead dust has been found at the former transport depot in Kingston, home of the Old Bus Depot Markets, testing carried out at the site has confirmed. According to the ACT Government, the testing uncovered lead particulates in surface dust, with samples collected and tested as part of the $6.5 million renovations being undertaken on the building. It is believed the lead dust has been present with minimal disturbance for many years but may have been unsettled during recent construction activities. The ACT Government believes it will take at least three months for cleaning and remediation work at the site to occur, and the Old Bus Depot Markets will not reopen until this work is complete. WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST

Prospective tenants also face highly competitive conditions as the rental vacancy rate, according to SQM Research, has fallen from 1.4% in January 2020 to 0.8% in January 2021. Asking rents for houses increased by 6% and units 3.9% during the same period, indicating neither a global pandemic nor delivery of the largest mixed-use precinct in the Southern Hemisphere were able to improve a chronic shortage of rental stock in Canberra. The underlying strength of the Canberra economy and pace of increasing values whether you’re participating in the rental or sale market, indecision and delaying decisions could end up costing you significantly more for the same property in a few months’ time.

Curtin price record smashed The sale of a home in Canberra’s south has smashed the suburb record by $200,000. Sold by Hive’s Josh Morrissey, 11 Boucaut Place in Curtin sold off-market last week for $2.7 million, just days before it was due to be listed. The four-bedroom, built-to-sell home was bought by someone the agents had met at other open homes. The previous record for the suburb was held by 83 Dunstan Street, which sold last year for $2,500,000.

The off-market sale of this home in Curtin smashed the suburb sale record by $200,000. Photos supplied.

if you wanted to. The double garage is very large, too.” In the popular and tightly held suburb of Garran, 95 Fitchett Street backs onto reserve and is home to four bedrooms, the main suite with an ensuite, and a large wraparound deck that makes the most of the home’s lush surrounds. The modern kitchen is the heart of the home, while the downstairs rumpus has a kitchenette and ensuite. The main bathroom has been re-configured and includes a large oval bath. “The home is close to the

Canberra Hospital precinct, Garran Primary School and is within walking distance to Sts Peter and Paul Primary school as well,” says Wilson. “It is ideal for a family looking for a home in a great location close to local schools, Canberra Hospital or someone with extended family or teenagers who would make use of the downstairs area.”

in the stars ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

If you have been feeling rather lonely or isolated, an email or phone call from a friend may be just the thing to perk you up. You’re in the early stages of a seven-year cycle in which your fortunes fluctuate but, overall, hard work will reap rewards.

You may not be feeling the best so take some time to pamper yourself a little. You may have the start of a chronic ailment or backache returning, so don’t push yourself beyond your limits. A better diet will do you wonders.

It feels like family, loved ones or ageing relatives have been making many demands on your time and competing for your attention lately. If you really want to set the cat amongst the pigeons, go out with a friend and leave them all to squabble.

Obstacles may be placed in your way at work and it will be hard to get others to see things with the same urgency. You may be frustrated by someone in a position of authority who seems to have a slow and philosophical attitude to what you see as priorities.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG It feels like nothing will get resolved as quickly as you would like it to be at this time. Work or business matters will take their time and any negotiations you are involved with could become complicated over the next few weeks.

SCORPIO 24 Oct – 22 Nov While Mercury remains retrograde until 22 February, if you say the wrong thing or let slip an indiscretion that is not yours to reveal, important people could turn against you. The only way to impress those who count is by refusing to say too much. Don’t rise to the bait.

You may be called on to keep the peace at home, because no other sign can be as determined as you are under the right circumstances. Whatever you say, make sure it is honest as this will have a far greater effect than flattery or false promises.

Allow time for a chat with a colleague and use some charm as you will learn something to your advantage. The planets support you to reinvent your finances and you will be far less pressured financially than you have been in a long time.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE It could be that your energy levels are quite low now and even though you have plenty of plans, you may not feel inclined to start just yet. Your partner also needs some extra attention so do your best to be there for them while looking after yourself.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT If you have any concerns when it comes to your health and wellbeing, then surely it’s better to check everything out, if only to set your mind at rest. Perhaps the only cure for health worries and work concerns is a complete change of routine.

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC Be a little extra careful while Mercury remains retrograde in Aquarius until 22 Febrary and everything should go well. It is time to expect the unexpected and people you have not heard from for some time may suddenly be back in contact.

If you want to talk to Canberra, talk to us.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR If you haven’t been seeing eye-to-eye with certain friends lately, you can blame it on Mercury’s wayward course which makes all social relations that much more difficult. Fortunately, Mercury retrograde in Aquarius ends on 22 February so look forward to smoother sailing ahead.

WIN! About Endlessness (M) film passes The latest masterpiece from Roy Andersson (A Pigeon Sat On A Branch Reflecting On Existence) is a reflection on human life in all its beauty and cruelty, its splendour and banality. A couple floats over a war-torn Cologne; on the way to a birthday party, a father stops to tie his daughter’s shoelaces in the pouring rain; a defeated army marches to a prisonerof-war camp. Simultaneously an ode and a lament, About Endlessness (M), releasing 4 March, presents a kaleidoscope of all that is eternally human, an infinite story of the vulnerability of existence. Thanks to our friends at Dendy Canberra, Canberra Weekly has 6 x About Endlessness in-season double passes to be won.

My favourite things COOKING My best pastime is to try different kinds of cuisines for my family and friends. I think we all enjoy food, but cooking is a particular love of mine. I have worked as a professional chef in the past, and it’s stuck with me. I do most of the cooking at home, although I am very lucky that my wife and two children share my passion, and we often share the work of making a meal.

WATCHING MOVIES

Photo Deepak-Raj Gupta

I enjoy watching movies and relaxing with my family. Mostly Hollywood and Bollywood, but lately we have been watching television serials like Designated Survivor.

Deepak-Raj Gupta Former MLA for Yerrabi

A community man through and through, Indian-born Deepak-Raj Gupta is a strong voice for Canberra’s multicultural community. The creator of the World Curry Festival, President of the India–Australia Association of Canberra and organiser of the National Multicultural Festival for 10 years, Mr Gupta’s service to the community was recognised in 2012 with an ACT Community Advocate award and in 2015 he received a Community Service Excellence award. From July 2019 until the October 2020 ACT election, the Gungahlin resident became the first Indian-born person to hold the position of MLA in the ACT Legislative Assembly, when he represented the electorate of Yerrabi for the Labor party. Mr Gupta said his favourite part of the job was meeting people. - Cassandra Power 98

SPORTS I like playing and watching all kinds of sports. But I’d be betraying both my countries if I didn’t love cricket, so it’s fortunate that it’s one of my favourite pastimes. In fact, I have a cricket bat signed by the entire 2015 touring India cricket team. I used to be a nationally ranked butterfly swimmer, which is something not a lot of people know about me.

PETS I love pets and my family boasts four of the cutest dogs you’ve ever seen: Jimmy, Sky, Tank, and the latest addition is Timmy. Sky and Tank are cheeky, but we love them for it. Walking them each day is a wonderful way to unwind; it gets me out into nature, and they are so energetic that I almost have to jog to keep up.

WALKS Canberra has so many beautiful walking tracks. I enjoy going with friends and family, four times a week for a healthy lifestyle!
