thursday 25 february 2021

This week... Regardless of who uttered it first (JFK, Edmund Burke, John Stuart Mill), many of us are familiar with the quote: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men [people] do nothing.” It’s come to mind again this past week as news has emerged of the 2019 sexual assault of Brittany Higgins in a ministerial office in Parliament House, right here in Canberra. With the alleged attacker let off the hook at the time, it appears he went on to commit more offences and that Ms Higgins was not his first victim. It’s a sobering repeat of the institutional child sexual abuse royal commission which uncovered numerous cases of perpetrators being moved from one town to the next each time their activities raised suspicion. Worse than doing nothing, the crimes were covered up, and the perpetrators were free to claim new victims. Sexual predators have their own modus operandi that must be disrupted by calling them out and holding them to account. Looking the other way does not solve the problem; it only allows it to fester. Reasons to be grateful this past week include a sunny weekend perfectly punctuated with a Sunday evening rainstorm, a family birthday gathering, vegan lemon cheesecake, refreshing green tea, and paid sick leave (to cover my first sick day in 12 years).

news First Canberrans receive COVID-19 vaccinations Maddy Williams was all smiles as the needle was stuck in her arm. Few people would be so cheerful about an injection, but Ms Williams had just cause to rejoice. On Monday morning, 22 February, she became the first person to be vaccinated against coronavirus at the ACT Government’s COVID-19 Surge Centre in Garran. “It’s awesome to know that I was at the start of helping to create a COVID-free Australia,” Ms Williams said. The ACT received its first doses of the Pfizer/ BioNTech vaccine this week– “liquid gold,” said vaccination nurse Nikoletta Karagiannidis – and 2,000 ACT residents will have been vaccinated by Friday evening, 26 February. Under Phase 1a of the rollout, more than 3,500 frontline health workers will be vaccinated at the surge centre (built in 36 days on the Garran Oval last year as an overflow emergency department). The ACT Government vaccinated 50 people on Monday; that number increased to 250 each day over the rest of the week. “A year ago, everyone had no hope; here today, we have some hope in the vaccine,” Ms Karagiannidis said. Ms Williams said the vaccine did not hurt; if

anything, she said, it felt better than the normal ’flu vaccine. She would “100%” encourage other people to get vaccinated. Both nurses are testing staff at the surge centre. Present for the occasion, Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt called the two nurses Australian heroes, protecting the nation during the pandemic. “Today is a day of hope and protection,” he said. “There’s a lot more to go, but the next phase begins in earnest today.” Meanwhile, the Commonwealth Government is vaccinating residents of disability and aged care facilities across Australia. Among the first to be vaccinated in the ACT was 86-year-old Judy Baker, a resident at Uniting Miranjani, an aged care service in Weston. Miranjani service manager Sharon Kickett said residents were lining up to be vaccinated; one told her they wanted their life back to normal. ACT Minister for Health Rachel Stephen-Smith said she expected vaccination numbers to increase once the British AstraZeneca vaccine becomes available in March. The TGA approved AstraZeneca last week; this will be the only available vaccine that is locally

manufactured in Australia. Pfizer is more effective (two doses give 95% immunity), but must be stored and transported at -70 oC.AstraZeneca may be only 70% effective at preventing symptomatic COVID-19, but is cheaper to manufacture, and does not need to be deepfrozen, making it easier to distribute. Nevertheless, public health actions must continue for the next six months, until the vaccination’s effect on the population is understood, Bernadette McDonald, Canberra Health Services CEO, said. Repatriation flights for Australians overseas will continue, vaccinated or not, Mr Hunt said. - Nick Fuller

Australians warned of COVID-19 vaccine scams as rollout starts With the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination rollout now underway, Australians are being warned about online scams set up to capitalise on the program. Scams include: vaccine-related URLs purchased by scammers; emails, texts and calls coming from ostensibly official sources asking for payment to be put on a list; and sales ads on social media for COVID-19 vaccines. The government recommends Australians seek COVID-19 vaccine advice through official channels – be that the Australian Government’s Department of Health website, the ACT Government’s COVID-19 website, or the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) website. The Commonwealth Government has repeatedly stated that COVID-19 vaccines will be free for all Australian citizens, permanent residents and temporary visa-holders. An Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) spokesperson told Canberra Weekly they have received 16 Scamwatch reports 8

canberraweekly.com.au

concerning COVID-19 vaccines so far this year. “The public should be aware that scammers may try to contact people via telephone or other communication means to offer access to overseas vaccines or early access to Australian vaccines for COVID-19,” they said. “The offers may include requests for upfront payments for access to vaccines. These offers are not legitimate. “Don’t send money to people who contact you out of the blue offering services that would normally be offered by your health professionals.” An ACT Health spokesperson told Canberra Weekly they were disappointed to see COVID-19 vaccine scam materials being distributed. “We understand that people have many questions about the vaccine rollout,” they said. “We strongly urge all Canberrans to equip themselves with accurate and up-to-date information from credible and trustworthy sources, so that they can make the best decision for themselves and their families.

“Canberrans have been very responsive to the public health advice on COVID-19 … we are confident that this will be followed through with the vaccine rollout.” The TGA warn against importing or purchasing COVID-19 vaccines online. “Vaccines bought online are likely to be unsafe and ineffective,” they said. “These vaccines could also be counterfeit (fake). People or websites claiming to sell a COVID-19 vaccine may not deliver any product, and they may instead steal your money or your personal information.” Scammers often create websites, advertise through social media or use SMS messages that look genuine. “Always verify the information by checking an independent or trusted source,” the TGA said. The TGA is working closely with the Australian Border Force (ABF) to stop unlawful imports of COVID-19 vaccines. - Denholm Samaras

the security it offered. There are currently 138 dwellings under construction as part of the five-year program, and 160 properties have been built or purchased since its inception. “We want to make sure that homes are in places where people need them and where people want them most, which is in every suburb across the city,” Ms Berry said. More public housing is urgently needed across Canberra, with the most recent Productivity Report on Government Services finding that although the ACT saw an 18% increase in population from 2011-2020, the number of public housing dwellings slightly decreased in the same period. There is currently an 81-day wait for a vacant property, and earlier this month ACTCOSS CEO Dr Emma Campbell said the ACT housing crisis was worsening. - Rosa Ritchie

Roll up, roll up to The Big Canberra Bike Ride! Riders of all ages and abilities will wake up on Sunday 21 March, buckle their helmets and roll up to the The Big Canberra Bike Ride, now in its 22nd year. Pedal Power CEO Ian Ross said

12

canberraweekly.com.au

the unique bike riding event was designed to suit all riders of all abilities. “Some people ride for pleasure, some race, others commute by bike and some people only ride on dirt

tracks, but for one event each year, we unite and ride as one.” Nine-year-old Millie Birks will ride the 6km Family Ride. She learned how to get around on two wheels about five years ago and says she loves exploring unsealed tracks and “all that stuff”. Dirt bike rider Lynne Prentice lives by the motto ‘I ride to ride another day’. She started commuting by bicycle 11 years ago, before she began exploring her now favourite local fire trails. She’ll ride in the 32km Big Community Ride this year, as will fellow Pedal Power member Brett Wheeler, whose love for cycling in Canberra also started with a daily commute. Brett says he began with a cheap mountain bike and enjoyed the solitude, then discovered a sense of camaraderie on a Sunday morning group ride with Pedal Power. “It settled me down and made it

where I was a bit more relaxed on the bike,” he said. Now Brett’s custom set-up has taken him all over, carrying plenty of water and an extensive toolkit - “So if need be, I’ve got myself covered as well as anyone else that needs help.” His bike is decked out with wireless speakers to play music on the road, mostly “nice, relaxing” tunes from the 1960s, ‘70s and ‘80s. “At the same time, you sometimes get the upbeat songs that get the cadence going a bit faster!” For Brett, riding one-handed isn’t difficult, and he says it’s only on long rides that he sometimes gets a bit sore. “Yeah, I’ve got a choice of ride the way I do or not ride, and that’s not a choice!” There will be four routes available at this year’s event, with distances ranging from 6km to 120km. news Students and experts warn changes to Fair Work will increase insecurity Experts from the Australian National University are vocal in their criticism of the Commonwealth Fair Work Amendment Bill 2020, warning it could spark more public health emergencies, with people in insecure work the worst affected. In a submission to the Senate Committee, nine ANU researchers argued the proposed changes to industrial relations will increase casual employment and insecure working conditions which, combined with a lack of access to paid sick leave, increases the risk of virus transmission. Essential workers and young Australians are identified as the two key groups to bear the brunt of the “profoundly negative” repercussions if the Bill passes without amendments. This rings true for ANU Student Association (ANUSA) education officer Madeleine Chia, who also made a submission, to advocate for her generation. Ms Chia is a 19-year-old casual worker who lost her job and income for the duration of 2020. She argued the Bill would lead to casual work being the

“default of the future”. “These proposed changes state that if the status ‘casual’ is marked in your contract, you will not be entitled to leave and other benefits such as a notice of termination or redundancy.” She said the “loophole” will provide an incentive for businesses to make more jobs casual, and the Government’s proposed changes gave employers the power to force through Workplace Agreements that may contain lower rates of pay, cut penalty rates and cut conditions like guaranteed minimum shift hours. Ms Chia said her past experiences of casual work involved forced unpaid overtime and feeling pressured to work when she was sick. Two years ago, Ms Chia was hospitalised and felt she had no choice but to show up for her shift after being discharged. “I actually still went to work later that day because I didn’t want to annoy my boss.” Ms Chia said employees who called in sick were often met with suspicion by employers or asked to

come in anyway. “If the amendment was to pass, then it just gives more power to the bosses to make sure that casual workers have no rights whatsoever.” According to the Young Workers Centre at UnionsACT, which conducted detailed, ACTwide surveys of young workers over the past three years, wage theft is “widespread and systemic” in Canberra. The surveys indicated half of all young workers in the ACT had wages stolen each year and one third of young workers were working in unsafe conditions. - Rosa Ritchie

news

Canberra Raiders players Curtis Scott, Ryan James and Sia Soliola were on hand as Vinnies launched their inaugural Knock On Effect fundraising campaign. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.

Raiders back Vinnies’ Knock On Effect appeal From 1974 until 2019, Vinnies Doorknock Appeal was a ubiquitous fundraiser for the high-profile charity with a strong local presence. Usually held in February each year, the Doorknock raised money to assist people who had fallen on tough times to cover the bare necessities. The 2020 appeal was called off due to the smoke haze, and this year

16

canberraweekly.com.au

the ongoing impact of COVID has meant it’s seen the same fate. “That was one of the appeals that served the community really well,” said St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn CEO, Barnie van Wyk. “But it was also an opportune time for us to reconsider where we are at in terms of the appeal because we had over 1,000

volunteers going out doorknocking.” When Vinnies decided it was time to reinvent the campaign, they approached a group of University of Canberra students, who, along with consultancy firm Synergy Group, conceived the new fundraiser, the Knock On Effect. “Most of our volunteers are more senior citizens, so we had to look at that in terms of how we get more awareness, more families involved, and just spread the whole fundraising awareness while trying to recruit more volunteers for our other programs,” Mr van Wyk said. “Every $5 you donate, every hour that you provide of your time, every piece of clothing you donate and even every smile you give somebody has a knock-on effect.” Launched on Friday 19 February at Raiders HQ in Braddon with support from Canberra Toyota, Canberra Region Rugby League, and the Raiders, Vinnies’ Knock On Effect

will run throughout March, raising funds to help those in need through an online platform. With Vinnies planning to run the appeal every March from now on, Mr van Wyk is hopeful it could one day outlast the Doorknock Appeal. Raiders forward Sia Solioa has a longstanding relationship with Vinnies, having completed the CEO Sleepout multiple times over the years. Recognised for his extensive charity work with the NRL’s 2019 Ken Stephens Medal, Mr Soliola said getting involved with local charities is especially important given the impact COVID continued to have on the sector. “For me, doing a couple of sleepouts and with that experience, it’s really getting everyone to know and understand it [homelessness] is not what you think it is,” he said. - Denholm Samaras More information: donate.vinnies.org. au/event/knock-on-effect/

Dedicated police team to investigate Page stabbings A dedicated investigative team has been established by ACT Policing in response to the stabbing death of a 34-year-old man on Braine Street, Page on the morning of Saturday 20 February. Comprising investigators specialising in homicide, ACT Policing Detective Superintendent, Criminal Investigations, Scott Moller said on Monday 22 February that police had already taken 20 witness statements. “If there is anybody in the community who saw anything or witnessed anything on Saturday morning, I’d appreciate them contacting us or contacting Crime Stoppers,” he said. The name of the dead man has not yet been released. The three surviving people – two men aged 28 and 36, and a 20-yearold woman – were in hospital under heavy sedation on Monday, having all undergone surgery; all were expected to survive their injuries. The 36-year-old is the man police arrested on Saturday; however, no charges have been laid at this stage. “We have arrested the man we believe was responsible for this incident, but due to the nature of his injuries, and the injuries incurred by the two surviving victims, it will be some time before we are able to speak further to them,” Detective Superintendent Moller said. Police believe the offender used

at least two knives in the initial attack. Detective Superintendent Moller described the incident as “tragic” for those involved and the community. “It was a terrible scene, there was a lot of blood and for the responding police and paramedics that went there, it was terrible. “Everybody in the community is traumatised by it, it’s a tragic situation. We’ve got a man that’s dead and we’ve got some people with really horrific injuries. “It’s an unusual set of circumstances.” Detective Superintendent Moller said police who responded to the call arrived to an “unpredictable and very dangerous” scene. “They were confronted by an armed offender who they were able to disarm and arrest and transport to hospital,” he said. “The community again in the ACT … were the ones who contacted police. This is the type of cooperation police need to be able to do their jobs properly.” Anyone who may have any information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. WorkSafe shuts down site

76 Hardwick Crescent, Kippax 18

canberraweekly.com.au

WorkSafe ACT inspectors last week shut down one construction site in Denman Prospect for multiple safety concerns and issued more than 70 notices across the suburb. As part of Operation Safe Prospect, the regulator’s crackdown on safety in the ACT’s residential construction industry, inspectors visited the suburb on

Wednesday 17 February and issued notices for risk of falls from heights, unsafe scaffolding, electrical hazards, poor housekeeping and insecure site fencing. Work Health and Safety Commissioner, Jacqueline Agius said the operation showed there is “no sign of improvements to work health and safety in the residential construction industry”.

Hands Across Canberra has announced the region’s largest charitable fundraising appeal, the Hands Up 4 CBR Giving Day, joining with 55 local charities to raise $500,000. The Canberra Day Appeal will be held on Tuesday 9 and Wednesday 10 March across a 48-hour period to raise funds for local charities. Peter Gordon, CEO of Hands Across Canberra, hopes the Canberra Day Appeal will help the ACT community realise there is a need “to give where you live”. “Each person in Canberra donates about $400 to charity every year, something we should be very proud of. However, the majority of our donations leave our city. The perception is that Canberra is a prosperous place which often means our generosity goes to national or international causes,” Mr Gordon said. “Canberra Day will be a day that we also think about what we have done locally and generously … It will be the biggest fundraising event in the Canberra calendar.” Hands Up 4 CBR Giving Day will be introducing 55 charities to the broader Canberra community by letting them tell their story and inviting Canberrans to

donate more money locally. “Essentially all we have to do is shift the way that the donation dollar is spent to get a large proportion spent here,” he said. “We’re not asking people to necessarily donate more to charity; just donate more to Canberra, in Canberra. Give where you live.” According to Mr Gordon, the charities involved range from perinatal to palliative care and everything in between. “We have Oz Harvest, we have Canberra City Care who do amazing work out of Charnwood, we’ve got Raw Potential who provide youth workers who work on the streets every night … Canberra is a diverse community and the charities that we’re supporting reflect that diversity.” 2020 saw a huge increase in demand for not-for-profit services due to the impact of bushfires and COVID, but the sector has not recovered financially. Local charities faced a dramatic reduction in usual donation and revenue streams and less access to volunteers due to restrictions. - Erin Cross Find an extended version of this story online at canberraweekly.com.au; to donate, visit canberraday.org.au

sport Brumbies begin title defence with victory Giants make it two in a row The Brumbies have begun their Super Rugby AU title defence with a clinical victory over the Western Force 27-11 at HBF Park in Perth on Friday night 19 February. Despite being put under pressure by the home team at times, strong defence and some cracking tries saw the Brumbies start the season as winners. It was the Force who got the scoring going, with skipper Ian Prior kicking the first of his

two penalty goals on the night. Brumbies flyhalf Noah Lolesio levelled the scoring from the tee but wasn’t done there as he added a try shortly after. Lolesio would add a second penalty to his ledger, giving the Brumbies a 13-6 lead heading into the break. The Brumbies had their second try right after half-time with Len Ikitau turning the Force inside out and offloading to his centre partner, Irae Simone, to score. Some slick hands down the right wing saw replacement Issak Fines-Leleiwasa put the finishing touches on the Brumbies win with a brilliant try. The Force would add a try at the death, denying the Brumbies a bonus point. However, the night belonged to the defending champions as they spoiled the Force’s homecoming. Next up, in their first home game of the season, the Brumbies play the NSW Waratahs on Saturday night 27 February at GIO Stadium. More details and tickets: brumbies.rugby

A bag of goals from Irish forward Cora Staunton helped the GWS Giants to their second straight AFLW victory as they downed the West Coast Eagles by 20 points in Blacktown on Sunday 21 February. The 39-year-old booted four of the Giants seven goals to help the team record their biggest score of the season in the 7.6 (48) to 4.4 (28) win. The Giants established an eight-point lead at half-time and went into the final quarter leading by just seven points. However, they managed two goals to none in the final quarter to seal the Giants second victory of the season. Along with the stellar performance from Staunton, Alyce Parker had 25 disposals and six tackles to continue her strong season. The Giants sit in tenth spot on the ladder after four rounds. Their next match is against the Western Bulldogs at Whitten Oval in Melbourne on Saturday 27 February 3.10pm. More info: gwsgiants.com.au

taste Steamed snapper fillets with ginger and spring onion by Kylie Kwong Serves 4

1/2 tsp white sugar

4 100g snapper fillets

2 Tbsp light soy sauce (gluten-free, if necessary)

80ml (1/3 cup) water

1/4 tsp sesame oil

2 Tbsp shao hsing

1/2 cup spring onion, julienned

2 Tbsp julienned ginger

1 1/2 Tbsp peanut oil

1 Chinese cabbage

1/4 cup coriander leaves

Place fish in a shallow, heatproof bowl that will fit inside a steamer basket. Pour water and shao hsing over fish, then sprinkle with half the ginger. Place the bowl inside the steamer and position over a deep saucepan or wok of boiling water. Steam, covered, for 5–6 minutes.

Remove cabbage from steamer and arrange on a serving plate. Using a spatula, carefully remove fish fillets from steamer, and place on top of the cabbage.

Cut Chinese cabbage into squares and slip inside steamer. Cover and steam for a further 2–3 minutes or until cabbage has warmed through and fish is just cooked. The flesh should be white; if it is still translucent, cook for another minute or so.

Pour any liquid left in the bowl over fish, sprinkle with sugar and drizzle with combined soy sauce and sesame oil, then sprinkle with remaining ginger and half the spring onion. Heat the peanut oil in a small frypan until moderately hot, then carefully pour over fish. Sprinkle fish with remaining spring onion and coriander and serve immediately.

Miso lamb cutlets with rocket and pear salad Serves 4 1 medium sweet potato, scrubbed, cut into wedges 1 1/2 Tbsp olive oil 1 1/2 Tbsp miso paste 1 1/2 Tbsp mirin (or lime juice) 8 lamb cutlets, frenched, fat trimmed 80g baby rocket leaves 2 small pears of your choice, cored, thinly sliced 2 celery stalks, thinly sliced 3/4 Tbsp balsamic vinegar 1/4 cup walnuts, toasted, chopped 20g parmesan cheese, shaved Chopped chives, to serve

Lightly spray sweet potato with oil, season and cook in a large char-grill pan or barbecue over medium-high heat for 10-12 minutes or until tender. Set aside to cool slightly. Meanwhile, in a small bowl combine half the oil with miso paste and mirin (or lime juice). Season and brush

cutlets with the dressing. Reheat the same large char-grill pan or barbecue over medium-high heat and cook cutlets, in batches, for 2-3 minutes each side or until cooked to your liking. Set aside on a plate loosely covered with foil to rest for 5 minutes.

In a large bowl, combine baby rocket, pears, celery and sweet potato. Drizzle with remaining oil and balsamic vinegar, season and toss to coat. Sprinkle with walnuts, parmesan and chives. Serve with lamb cutlets. Recipe and image courtesy of Australian Lamb; australianlamb.com.au

Grace Lillian Lee’s A weave of reflection, part of the Piinpi: Contemporary Indigenous Fashion exhibition at the National Museum of Australia. Images supplied.

Exhibition celebrates leading Indigenous creatives Australia’s first major survey of contemporary Indigenous textiles and fashion officially opened at the National Museum of Australia (NMA) on 19 February, marking a significant moment in Australia’s history. On display in Canberra until 8 August as part of a national tour, Bendigo Art Galley’s Piinpi: Contemporary Indigenous Fashion brings together around 60 works of Indigenous artists and designers from the inner city to remote desert art centres, celebrating Australia’s leading First Nations creatives. NMA director Dr Mathew Trinca said the exhibition “will provide a joyful start to 2021 as one of the key celebrations during the Museum’s 20th anniversary year and an exquisite showcase of exciting new work from rising stars in Indigenous fashion design”. “We live on a land with an enormously long human history and in these wonderful works what we are touching is a distillation, contemporary expression of stories that reach back many thousands of years,” Dr Trinca said. Curated by Bendigo Art Galley’s First Nations curator, Kaantju woman, Shonae Hobson, the exhibition comes as part of a long-standing

collaboration between the Alastair Swayn Foundation and the NMA, through the Museum’s Swayn Fellowship in Australian Design. Ms Hobson said the exhibition aims to “give audiences an opportunity to feel as if they’re being immersed onto Country”. “For me, there was never any First Nations representation in fashion … I thought this is a really incredible opportunity to bring Indigenous fashion into the gallery and museum context,” she said. Ms Hobson said ‘Piinpi’ is an expression that First Nations people from the East Cape York Peninsula use to describe seasonal changes in the landscape across time and space. “One of the things I found when I was reaching and talking to the designers and artists is that the practice and the fashion is really based on Country and the connection to their culture,” she said. “For many of the artists and designers in this exhibition, topographical features of the land, including river systems, waterways and native flora and fauna are primary sources of inspiration for their designs … Each work is handcrafted using ancient techniques and knowledge systems that convey a rich and vibrant culture that is both resilient and innovative.”

Exhibition highlights include four new pieces by Gunnai, Wiradjuri, Gunditjmara and Yorta Yorta woman, Lyn-Al Young, that capture the subtle transformations of Young’s Country over time, and several highly sculpted pieces by Grace Lillian Lee, a descendant of the Meriam Mir people of the Eastern islands of the Torres Strait. Other creators and brands featured in the exhibition include Lisa Waup x Verner, Hopevale Arts and Culture Centre, MAARA Collective, the Yarrenyty Arltere Artists, AARLI Fashion and LORE. Leila Naja Hibri, CEO of the Australian Fashion Council (AFC) said that seeing Piinpi for the first time gave her goosebumps. “This is absolutely beautiful, not just from a fashion perspective, just a creative, artistic perspective and of course the Indigenous heritage perspective,” she said. “We need to encourage and support the Indigenous fashion industry. I say that as CEO of the AFC, knowing that our industry hasn’t yet done enough.” As the first major exhibition of contemporary Indigenous Australian fashion in Australia, Piinpi sheds light on a growing industry which promises to become Australia’s major fashion movement. According to the Federal Minister for Industry, Science and Technology, Karen Andrews, Piinpi “showcases Indigenous fashion as clearly an emerging sector in the fashion industry but it also (continued page 30)

The power of patronage Inspired by the Know My Name movement and in a cultural partnership with the National Gallery of Australia, HERE I AM: Art by Great Women celebrates the importance and power of patronage. Presented by Kambri at ANU, curated by aMBUSH Gallery and with over 100 featured artists, HERE I AM aims to re-energise Canberra’s cultural landscape by showcasing some of Australia’s best contemporary Indigenous and nonIndigenous female creative talent. As a part of the festival, the Hon Ashley Dawson-Damer spoke with Maryanne Voyazis, head of development and executive director of the National Gallery of Australia Foundation, about the power of patronage and importance of women supporting

women in the arts. “I very much enjoy being in this world of men … I have enjoyed promoting women in the arts and exhibitions,” said Ms DawsonDamer. “Maryanne and I are women in the arts world, and we have chummed up and we have had extraordinary adventures … we’ve even done a dance in the Hall of Mirrors in Versailles.” As a director of the Yullis group of companies since 2000, an NGA Foundation Board member and a trustee of the Art Gallery of NSW, Ms Dawson-Damer has a deep appreciation for the performing and visual arts. Her latest book, A Particular Woman, discusses her life and work as one of Australia’s greatest art philanthropists. “Patronage is not a linear thing.

You think patronage would be a woman in power and it affects women in the arts world,” said Ms Dawson-Damer. “It’s more of an ephemeral thing. A woman who is in the centre of power, where power resides, will always raise the profile of other women and this is the key to it. “Women have been supporting women, there haven’t been a lot of us but we’re growing in our strength, our power and our patronage.” According to Ms Voyazis, the current exhibition and the broader Know My Name initiative has been made entirely possible through philanthropic giving at all levels. “We have a principal patron, we have major donors and then we have a collective of donors. To make it possible, $2.185 million was donated,” she said. “It was over 500 donors. Some people gave $100 and other people gave tens of thousands of dollars. “Where we know the gender of the donor, 70% of our donors for that campaign are women.” Ms Voyazis said the power of philanthropy at all levels can help art institutions and that talking about patronage inspires others to donate. “It doesn’t matter how much you give or what you can give but it’s important to do it because the

Nigerian-born Femi Kayode provides a dark picture of his homeland in his debut thriller, Lightseekers. Investigative psychologist Philip Taiwo is hired by the father of a boy who was brutally murdered, along with two other students, by a wild mob in a Nigerian university town, to find out what really happened. Thanks to social media, everyone knows who killed them, but the reason for it remains unclear. When Taiwo visits the town, he is met by resistance, corruption and a sense of concealment. His resultant dogged pursuit of the truth is not for the faint hearted and this searing tale of a place gone wrong will long stay in your mind.

Now showing The Little Things (M) In 1990, a woman is stalked by a fellow motorist. Flashing over to Bakersfield Kern County, deputy sheriff Joe ‘Deke’ Deacon (Denzel Washington) is called to his former place of employment at the LA County Sheriff’s Department to collect evidence pertaining to a recent murder. Once there, Deacon receives a frosty reception from his former chief, but is soon invited by new lead detective Jimmy Baxter (Rami Malek) to a murder scene eerily similar to the case that ended Deacon’s promising detective career. Written in 1993, the script was attached to name directors who passed due to the dark content. Since then, noir thrillers like Se7en, Zodiac, Prisoners, Secret in their Eyes and Netflix’s Mindhunter have explored serial killers and the moral ambiguity of those tasked in capturing them

with a gritty, muted palette. The Oscar-winning leads do their jobs well. Deacon is a burntout former detective assisting the fresh-faced Baxter, not yet sullied by the world of cops and robbers. Lacking in concrete evidence but knowing in their gut that Albert Sparma (Jared Leto) is their man, Baxter and Deacon find themselves restrained by the very legal procedures they have sworn to uphold. Should the two cops overstep their obligations to do what they see as right, lest another body is found? Verdict: Derivative of classic neo-noir thrillers with several odd editing choices, the movie, unfortunately, fizzles out despite the talent on screen. Very disappointing. 1.5 stars. The Little Things is screening at Palace Electric and Dendy cinemas. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

Music by the River sold out Residents of the ACT and Queanbeyan regions are set to enjoy a delightful evening of music on Saturday 27 February at this year’s sold-out Music by the River concert, weather permitting. To be held riverside at Queen Elizabeth II Park in Queanbeyan for the fifth year in a row, the Canberra Symphony Orchestra (CSO) will perform an evening of orchestral classics at Music by the River. A concert for the whole family, it promises to be a wonderful night for music lovers, those being introduced to the joy of live music for the first time, and those wanting to soak up the atmosphere. CSO concertmaster Kirsten Williams said Music by the River is a CSO favourite. “After such a difficult year in 2020, our musicians are more

excited than ever to bring beloved classics to the community, by the banks of the Queanbeyan River,” she said. Presented by QPRC, Icon Water has supported the event for several years. Managing director Ray Hezkial said the event is “a great opportunity for the whole community to come together”. The event will go ahead this year in a slightly different format due to COVID restrictions, with attendees having to pre-register to ensure they can enter the event space. Tickets to the free event have sold out. Attendees will be able to enjoy local wines, tasty food van favourites or can bring along their own picnic. Music by the River will take place Saturday 27 February from 5pm at Queen Elizabeth II Park, Queanbeyan.

Chronic pain and the mind You may know someone or indeed be one of the 3.24 million Australians living with chronic pain, a figure which is set to rise to 5.23 million by 2050, according to Pain Australia. One in five (20%) of all GP presentations in Australian involve chronic pain, and it costs the Australian economy in the order of $140 billion a year in medical costs and lost productivity. As chronic pain is invisible, people suffering with pain can be misread and stigmatised by those around them. There’s an associated reduction in enjoyment of daily activities, loss of function, reduced capacity to work and maintain relationships. Not surprisingly, many dealing with chronic pain also suffer from anxiety and depression. Historically, we have treated many people with treatments that lack evidence, some with significant harm risks. For example, opioids drugs are problematic due to their addictive nature, their significant side effects and the need for increasing higher doses due to patients developing tolerance and dependence. Pain medication does of course have a role to play, but is best used to

help in the initial phase of treatment then tapered off as other therapies kick in. Similarly, some surgical interventions lack evidence and can create outcomes that are worse than no treatment at all. One of the more exciting approaches to emerge in tackling chronic pain is based on the science of neuroplasticity. Neuroplasticity tells us that the brain can be rewired – something previously not thought possible for adult brains. Pain is created in the brain, usually in response to tissue damage; however, chronic pain extends beyond the time the body needs to naturally repair tissue damage. Pain that lingers beyond the threeto-six-month timeframe is less about structural changes in the body and more about the sensitivity of the nervous system. So, in order to tackle chronic pain, you need to retrain the brain and restore a better functioning nervous system. How do you do this? Here are four things that could help: Mind: Reducing stress winds down the nervous system and helps it re-calibrate pain signalling. It can also be crucial to address mental health by

working with changing unhelpful thoughts and healing toxic emotions. Emotions: It can be very helpful to examine your deeper story around pain by reviewing your own personal narrative of how you got to be where you are. Many people find there is a link between a worrying period of life and a worsening pain picture. Recognising deeper emotions can be part of the healing process. Nutrition: Diet and lifestyle, are also crucial, whether you are sedentary and whether you consume a diet that fuels systemic inflammatory response. For example, alcohol, smoking and poor nutrition all contribute to a sensitised nervous system. Activity: Physical activity is vital in chronic pain management; however, it is crucial to move at comfortable levels that do not elicit fear and where the brain does not protect by pain.

Flavour and more with spaghetti squash Spaghetti squash, Cucurbita pepo, is a delicious novelty in the summer vegetable patch. Once boiled or baked, the flesh scoops out into delightful spaghetti-like strands. Spaghetti squash is easy to grow, with each plant producing around five plump fruit, weighing up to 1.8kg each. Simply sow direct several seeds approximately 20mm deep, once the frosty weather has passed, in a well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Thin back to the two strongest seedlings and allow 70cm between plantings. Plants can be grown vertically on a support, which is perfect for blocking out hot afternoon sunlight from west-facing windows; they are also just as at home creeping along the ground as a weed-suppressing groundcover. Water and fertilise your spaghetti squash reliably to ensure a sizeable harvest, preferably using organic fertilisers which are beneficial to soil health. Fruit is ready to pick at around 15 weeks when it takes on a yellow hue and can then be stored in a cool dry place for four to six weeks. If you would like to save seed from this sometimes hard-to-find plant, there needs to be no related species within a 400m radius (such as zucchini). Otherwise, hand pollination and caging is

required – a fun task which is easier to carry out than you might expect. Check out The Seed Savers’ Handbook (1993) by Michel and Jude Fanton. Spaghetti squash is simple to prepare for baking. Simply cut in half lengthways with a sharp and sturdy knife, scoop out the seeds and season with salt pepper and olive oil. Bake in a moderate fan-forced oven for 40 to 50 minutes. To work its low-carb spaghetti magic, scrape the flesh out with a fork. Spaghetti squash can be used as a healthconscious pasta substitute, as a base for quiche, or a side dish.

using quality and appropriate pruning tools, that is, the right tool for the diameter of material being cut. It is also important to keep tools sharp and clean to prevent damaging plant branches and spreading disease.

Summer pruning of fruit trees

Many deciduous fruit trees with an established framework can be pruned during summer after harvest. Although not essential, pruning fruit trees has many advantages, such as: creating a stronger framework resistant to branch damage; increased air circulation, meaning reduced incidents of pest and disease problems; increased sunlight received to all parts of the tree, which improves fruit production and size; and maintained height for ease of harvest. Summer pruning restricts plant height and promotes fast healing of pruning cuts (especially important with species susceptible to ‘bleeding’ and fungal disease). Summer pruning of fruit trees includes the maintenance of framework branches and removal of any new vigorous growth from the centre of the tree. Avoid carrying out extensive pruning during exceptionally hot weather to prevent burning newly exposed foliage or causing undue stress to the tree. Once a summer pruning routine has been established, minimal, if any, winter pruning will be required. All pruning work should be carried out

Weekly market wrap The changing face of real estate Since the invention smart phones, social media and the internet have become entrenched in our lives. Convenience and access to information changed perceptions of mobile phones from a device to communicate to a powerful computer in your pocket. This column isn’t written to focus on technology; however, technology is accelerating an interesting trend in real estate businesses. In 2007 when I started my career, the biggest real estate businesses in Canberra were the most successful. Delivering solutions across multiple business disciplines to the market at scale required large teams, making it important to retain senior resources to maintain their knowledge and capabilities inhouse. In theory, this strategy was no different to businesses in other industries; however, technology, in particular smart phones and

social media, has accelerated a trend away from this model. Ironically, the reason is the same as what made these legacy businesses successful in the first place – brand. Digging deeper, successful agents are proficient marketers and negotiators. In my experience, agents can be quite eccentric, making them interesting, and, combined with their marketing capabilities, enabled some to build audiences on social media far larger than the organisations they work within. The risk to businesses is an inability to compete with the agents individually as their corporate nature and structure for broad appeal is inherently flawed when trying to resonate with specific demographics of consumers. This has shifted the power dynamic between organisations and their agents, accelerating an exodus of top talent from organisations in their twilight phase into start-ups.

WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST

I’ve written repeatedly in this column about the benefits of being ‘on the tools’ and maintaining an active role in the field when it comes to identifying trends as they are emerging within Canberra’s real estate market. Increasing the number of experienced real estate professionals in consumer-facing roles will increase competition and lift performance expectations. Hypothesising on how this trend plays out, I anticipate agency fragmentation will inevitably lead to success for many recent real estate start-ups; additionally, an enormous opportunity for agile mid-tier agencies to capitalise on changing business conditions by securing some very sophisticated developer clients.

Sierra Find your space Gungahlin Corner of Kate Crace Street and Efkarpidis Street Glav Corp’s Sierra development sits on the highest point in the Gungahlin Town Centre, with 360-degree views of Canberra and the Brindabellas. Glav Corp general manager Neil Barancewicz says the developer has taken careful consideration of the surroundings and incorporated generous terraces and balconies to take full advantage of the views. “We wanted to create a different type of building for Gungahlin, one that subverted the tradition of apartments on top of shops, one that listened to the needs of the greater community, and also created different types of 46

commercial opportunities,” he says. Mr Barancewicz says Sierra residents should feel they are a part of a community and a neighbourhood, with the building designed by JUDD Studio Architects to reflect this. Interiors have been designed by architects Turco and Associates. The development consists of 152 one-, two- and three-bedroom residential units and three commercial tenancies. There is also a large ‘end-of-trip’ facility as the development sits so close to the Gungahlin light rail terminus and the amenities of the Town Centre. “This facility has evolved to become a place to grab a coffee,

have your bike stored or repaired, have a shower on your way to work, or use the light rail to get to the city,” Mr Barancewicz says. The apartments have also been designed with working from home in mind, he says, with 12 live-work units. “We integrated a whole level of flexible live-work apartments, anticipating a need for people who want to live and work at a more local level,” he says. This is also reflected in the podium, landscaped gardens and open spaces. “We have also ‘future proofed’ the building for both residential and commercial tenancies with a

dedicated drone delivery area on the rooftop of the building.” There are more than 40 plan types to choose from, and the building’s unique shape and topology has allowed a design that has something to suit every buyer.
