thursday 04 march 2021

This week... It was a brisk 5oC when I headed out for a walk on Tuesday morning, a reminder that the calendar turned over to autumn on Monday 1 March. As we bid farewell to what was a refreshingly cooler and wetter summer than its predecessor, autumn is in the air. The first signs in my garden are the initial blush of red leaves on the Japanese maples. On my walks, fields of long golden grasses are threaded with cobwebs embellished with dewdrops that glisten like diamonds in the early morning sunlight. Bliss. That said, long-time readers of this column might recall my suggestion to adopt the northern hemisphere style of marking the change of seasons on the equinoxes and solstices (around 20-23 March, June, September and December) rather than the first of those months. It seems to me that early March (autumn) is usually warmer than early December (summer) and that winter in Canberra lingers well beyond 1 September, the start of spring. The solstice/ equinox solution helps to minimise disappointment, methinks. Reasons to be grateful this past week include meeting new people at an Alliance Française French Film Festival reception at the beautiful Residence of France, conviviality at the Sentia Real Estate launch party, alfresco lunch in Hall before catching up with friends at Tallagandra Hill Winery, and seeing Minari at the cinema. - Julie Samaras

news Open by summer? Gungahlin Pool no longer snookered The Gungahlin 50m swimming pool, closed for almost a year, could reopen by summer, Sports Minister Yvette Berry said in a committee meeting on Monday 1 March. The ACT Government has reached a commercial settlement with the pool builder, ADCO, which has agreed to pay the government $400,000. The government will pay the rest of the rectification costs itself. “We want to ensure that we’ve got it right, and that the pool is opened as quickly as possible,” said Duncan Edghill, chief projects officer of Major Projects Canberra, the ACT Government’s infrastructure agency. The government expects to engage a contractor in the next fortnight to repair the pool; rectification costs will be revealed once the contract is signed. Mr Edghill said the

construction company the government has in mind has built other projects for the ACT government without concern. The 50m swimming pool at the Gungahlin Leisure Centre was shut in March 2020 when the pandemic began. In June, while still closed, tiles began to fall out of the pool’s north face and floor. Ms Berry acknowledged that the length of time and repairs needed had been “incredibly frustrating”. At first, she said, the government expected a simple case of delamination: tiles falling off and needing to be regrouted or glued. “That wasn’t the case; it was much more complicated than that.” Three technical expert organisations have investigated the pool, but it is still not apparent what caused the problems. “The experts aren’t able to pinpoint a single cause,” Mr

Edghill said. “It may have been multiple factors working in conjunction.” With the reason why tiles have fallen off the pool a mystery, the government could not say this was ADCO’s fault. The procurement panel, he noted, had found ADCO suitably qualified to undertake the works, based on previous works it had undertaken elsewhere. Swimming pools were “a reasonably unique sort of beast”, so issues with pools did not necessarily mean there were issues with other works ADCO had built. “Unfortunately, we don’t know exactly what the issue is, so I’m a little reluctant to cast broader aspersions on the original constructor, but also because [the pool] is different to other assets.” Moreover, taking ADCO to court could have resulted in protracted litigation and the pool

being shut indefinitely, the ACT Government Solicitor had advised. Mr Edghill said using a different contractor and tiling system would give the government “a degree of comfort that we’re doing the best that we can to manage the risk and not find ourselves in this position again”. He said the new contractor will strip back the tiling across the entire pool, sandblast the concrete, lay the tiles, and incrementally refill and reheat the pool. If the pool is refilled too quickly, tiles and concrete can move at different rates, causing problems. The government is considering compensation for pool members, such as free periods once the pool reopens. - Nick Fuller Find an extended version of this story and more news online at canberraweekly.com.au

Writer and money coach Serina Bird – aka ‘The Joyful Frugalista’ – has been a landlord for over 15 years and, until this year, always found tenants for her investment properties via mainstream real estate agencies. In January, Ms Bird and her husband, Neil, took the opportunity to make a change by leasing one of their houses for 75% of its rental market value. The local couple switched to YWCA’s Rentwell property management service, which provides affordable housing for people and families priced out of Canberra’s mainstream rental market. Although Rentwell prioritises allocating homes to older women at risk of homelessness and women with children, men and families in 6

need are also eligible. There are 40 Rentwell houses across Canberra, all leased, and YWCA CEO Frances Crimmins hopes to double that number by July. “Our goal for the end of the 2020-21 financial year is to have 80 properties,” she said. On average, newly listed properties are tenanted within 48 hours of having an open home. Ms Bird learned that an older woman escaping domestic violence moved into her property, which she said was particularly meaningful to her as a domestic violence survivor. “It’s beautiful,” she said. Financial resilience is a key focus of Ms Bird’s work in the media; she’s passionate about helping women achieve a level of security that would allow them to quickly escape a dangerous situation at

home, if required. “I talk about this problem a lot, and it feels good to do something about it as well.” Property management fees are less expensive with Rentwell, the rent is guaranteed by YWCA, and landlords signed up for the program are eligible for a land tax exemption through the ACT Revenue Office. Ms Bird calculated she would earn about 10% more leasing in the private market. But she is confident Rentwell will be better value in the long run, because the difference between what she would be earning with a private lease and what she earns via Rentwell can be claimed as a taxdeductible gift to YWCA. Although Ms Bird’s income isn’t eligible for a sizeable tax deduction

yet, she expects it will be in the future. And working with Rentwell offers an unquantifiable value. “I feel like I have committed to doing the right thing,” Ms Bird said. - Rosa Ritchie

news Petition aims to smash ‘the bronze ceiling’ Jasiri Australia, a youth-led organisation, has launched a public petition to “smash the bronze ceiling” and celebrate the distinct accomplishments of women through statues and place names. Home of the internationally recognised Girls Takeover Parliament incubator, Jasiri launched the petition to spark conversations about equal representation after last year’s unveiling of the Andrew Inglis Clarke statue at Constitution Avenue. The Monumental Women petition is calling for more diversity and recognition of female leaders, especially those of diverse backgrounds, depicted in public art. According to Jasiri national program manager, Olivia Kourmadias, “you cannot be what you cannot see”. “In the ACT, one in every 10 statues is [of] a woman. It is absolutely disproportionate and in no way honours the political heritage of women,” Ms Kourmadias said. “It tells young women that their political heritage isn’t important and that

their contribution to politics isn’t worthy of commemoration or honour like the contributions of men. “The bronze ceiling is women don’t see themselves in architecture, they don’t see themselves in place names and they don’t see themselves in statues.” Ms Kourmadias said that only once monumental women are commemorated “can our democracy be inclusive of, accountable to, and accessible for all women”. Jasiri Australia aims to have one statue of a woman erected in the ACT by 2023 along with five new streets named after female leaders. The first woman to be commemorated as a part of the petition will be decided on by the public. “We want to open it up to the public and get them to vote on who they think the first statue should be and who they want the young girls to look up to, the values they want to see represented in our architectural landscape. “We want to make that change and from that we can start working with young women and show them this is what you can be, this is your

legacy, this is your political heritage, and this is what you can aspire to.” The final petition will be presented to the ACT Legislative Assembly in May. For more information visit jasiri.org.au - Erin Cross

A new record for Canberra businesses Did you know that there were 30,858 businesses actively trading in the ACT at the end of June 2020? That is the highest number ever registered in Canberra, and the local business population grew by 800 firms compared to the previous year. While almost 4,900 new firms started up, unfortunately around 4,100 closed in the same year. One of our challenges as a Territory is to get better at ensuring the long-term survival of businesses. Almost all that growth occurred in the micro- and small business sector (those with fewer than 20 staff). The number of larger companies declined, and today there are only 36 private businesses with more than 200 employees that we would class as large employers in the ACT. This is an exciting time for the Canberra private sector and the Canberra Business Chamber supports a diverse mix of companies from across industry sectors.

Networking for business success Building networks is critical to business success, and the diversity of Chamber members means our networking events are unique and highly valuable. Connecting our community is one important way we help businesses grow, build supply chains, and find new markets. We connect businesses with each other, government officials, embassies and not-for-profit organisations. Events range from friendly and casual networking at our monthly Business after Business evenings, to key events in the ACT calendar like the State of the Territory Address, delivered annually by the Chief Minister. If you would like to learn more, our full 2021-2022 calendar of events is online at www.canberrabusiness.com For those who employ staff, Chamber membership is often the cheapest option for the best support and assistance with all aspects of employing and managing people. For small business, we can help with recruitment, human resource management, employment resources and understanding IR and legal issues. Last year, our Employment

Relations advice line helped resolve 1,450 enquires, and hundreds of employers look after their people and navigate a changing landscape.

A voice for business and the private sector Following the October 2020 election, the ACT Government created the Minister for Business portfolio, an idea put forward by the Chamber last year. We meet regularly with the Minister, the ACT Chief Minister, ACT opposition MLA’s and Federal parliamentarians. Facilitating our members’ access to elected representatives directly is also importaant, through our regular political roundtable discussions and other meetings. The private sector includes many for-purpose organisations, including industry and professional associations, charities and community groups. Over 50 of these groups are Chamber members, coming together regularly to exchange ideas and help develop policy. We aim to lead discussion on issues that impact business in the ACT, ensuring that media and our community understand the needs and concerns of ACT business. The Chamber was featured in the ACT’s key print, radio and TV media more than 250 times last year alone. The Canberra Business Chamber is the ONLY business chamber in the ACT. We focus every day on giving Canberra businesses all they need to succeed; our members are at the centre of our every action. If you’re a Canberra business, we would love to support you too.

news Nixon to chair corrections oversight committee Christine Nixon has a difficult task: cleaning up the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC), the ACT prison notorious for assaults on staff and allegations of racism. Ms Nixon was appointed last week to lead an oversight committee charged with improving the AMC and the ACT Corrective Services Court Transport Unit (CTU), which transports people between detention and court. Estimates Hearings revealed she will be paid $2,000 a day plus GST. Australia’s first woman police commissioner, Ms Nixon has been credited with ridding the NSW and Victorian state police of corruption, and improving policing for women officers, juveniles and victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Her experience in reform may well be needed. A 2019 survey for the Healthy Prison Review revealed that 83.7% of staff surveyed disagreed the AMC was run well, while 77.3% complained management did not make changes when needed. The view from the other side of the bars was also grim – particularly for Aboriginal people. The prison has gained a reputation for racism, after bashings, deaths in custody, staff allegedly playing ‘Hangman’

with the names of prisoners, and an alleged strip search of a rape survivor in front of male prisoners. The CTU is in better shape; a 2020 review found it was highly regarded. Nevertheless, some CTU staff were unsure what to do in emergency situations at court premises and many officers were uneasy about working with children and young people. The Committee will comprise representatives from the Official Visitors, Human Rights Commission, the Indigenous community, Community and Public Sector Union, AMC, ACT Corrective Services, and the Justice and Community Safety Directorate. Liberals MLA Elizabeth Kikkert said Ms Nixon was being paid to do a job the ACT Government should already be doing. She suggested the appointment was a means for Corrections Minister Mick Gentleman to avoid personal responsibility for the government’s “failures”. Indigenous health advocate Julie Tongs, CEO of Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health and Community Services, expected Ms Nixon would do a good job, but believed the inquiry would not address the entrenched racism in the prison. - Nick Fuller

Designing a new coat of arms “For the Queen, the Law, and the People…” Does the British monarchy really symbolise the ACT? Do crowns, portcullises, swords, and the White Rose of York? The City of Canberra coat of arms, granted in 1928, strikes many locals as “outdated and irrelevant”, according to a 2019 survey. This year, the ACT (the only jurisdiction without one) could have a new coat of arms – a supplement to the existing City of Canberra emblem, not a replacement. It will be “diverse,

modern, and inclusive”, the ACT Government states. A Community Reference Group of experts in heraldry, Ngunnawal culture, and design will guide the design process for the new coat of arms. University of Canberra graphic design students will submit their proposed coats of arms this semester, working with Master of Arts students. The public can follow the design process on the YourSay page, and take part in a Community Panel.

sport National Sheepdog Trials flock to Hall Sheepdog triallists will travel to Hall from across Australia for the 78th National Sheepdog Trial Championships (NSDTC) this month, 9-14 March, camping at the showground with teams of fourlegged workmates. NSDTC president Sarah Sydrych, who will compete as well, described the scene to Canberra Weekly. Most competitors arrive with a caravan and at least half a dozen highly trained sheepdogs, and there will be up to 300 dogs onsite for the six-day heritage sport event. “At night-time you may hear an occasional bark, but there’ll be hardly any noise,” she said. Ms Sydrych is still learning the complex art of competing in a trial, and she has a brilliant coach in former NSDTC president and eminent triallist, Charlie Cover.

Mr Cover’s father taught him how to work with sheepdogs in the late 1940s, and he’s been involved in the sport most of his life. He explained the basics of sheepdog trials, things spectators might want to look out for during the upcoming event. “I often say that the art of sheepdog trialling is to balance the sheep between fight and flight.” Whoever is controlling the dog in the yard must do so in a way that creates a “comfortable feeling” within the sheep, and this is what allows dog and master to manoeuvre sheep through obstacles and into a pen. “Sheepdog trials are judged, in the roughest form, on where sheep are as opposed to where they ought to be,” Mr Cover said. “And if they’re in flight you can

bet your life that they’re not going to be where they ought to for very long! And then points are going.” Each dog starts with a perfect score of 100 and 15 minutes to herd three sheep into an enclosure, with points deducted for straying from the path, refusing obstacles, or failing to enter the pen in time. Every handler has a different style; instructions to the dog can be many or few and can be communicated with gestures, whistles, shouts or gentle words. Ms Sydrych said the Championships provided an occasion for farmers to get off their properties, head to the Bush Capital, socialise and share stories. The event is also

Brumbies break records in 61-10 rout over Waratahs

Giants in Manuka Oval swap

The Brumbies sent a strong message to the rest of the Super Rugby AU competition with a dominant 61-10 victory over the NSW Waratahs at GIO Stadium on Saturday 27 February. In their opening home game of the season, the Brumbies ran in nine tries to record their highest total ever against their traditional rivals, the Tahs. The 51-point victory is also the highest winning margin between the two sides. A hat-trick from local product Mack Hansen, mixed with some brute force from the fierce Brumbies maul, delighted the crowd. The Brumbies are now two wins from two matches to start the season and sit on top of the Super Rugby AU ladder. Their next game is against the Melbourne Rebels at GIO Stadium Canberra on Saturday 6 March.

Canberra will no longer host the GWS Giants pre-season match after the AFL made the decision for all clubs to remain in their home states for the AAMI Community Series. The Giants were set to face the Brisbane Lions at Manuka Oval but will instead play the Sydney Swans at Giants Stadium on Sunday 7 March. The Giants are still scheduled to play two AFL games at Manuka Oval in the early part of the season, in round three against the Melbourne Demons and round six against the Western Bulldogs. With the men’s side not playing their pre-season game here, the Giants AFLW will instead feature at Manuka Oval for the first time since 2019, taking on the Lions this Saturday 6 March. Tickets available via Ticketek.

Long weekend baking Bake your way into the long weekend! This week, food writer Libby Kimber shares this recipe for a sweet treat that is not only delicious, but gluten-free as well. 190ml (generous 3/4 cup) milk

80ml (1/3 cup) melted butter (or oil), cooled

1 Tbsp lemon juice

1 Tbsp vanilla extract

Butter, for greasing

200g (1 1/2 cups) gluten-free plain flour 50g (1/2 cup) cocoa powder 160g (3/4 cup plus 1 Tbsp) caster sugar 150g (3/4 cup) light brown sugar 1 tsp gluten-free baking powder

1 Tbsp instant coffee 190ml (3/4 cup plus 1 Tbsp) boiling water For the icing

1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

200g dark chocolate, broken into pieces

1/2 tsp xanthan gum

155g (2/3 cup) butter

2 medium eggs

90ml (6 Tbsp) double cream

Preheat your oven to 160°C fan/180°C. Lightly grease two 20cm round cake tins and line with non-stick baking parchment. Start by making your icing. In a large heatproof bowl, add your chocolate, butter and cream. Place over a saucepan of gently boiling water, making sure the water isn’t touching the base of the bowl, and keep stirring until everything has melted and mixed together. Set aside to cool completely and thicken to a spreadable consistency. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, mix your milk and lemon juice and allow to stand for 10 minutes until it curdles a little. In a large mixing bowl, add all the dry ingredients, sifting in the flour and cocoa powder. Mix well. Crack your eggs into the slightly curdled milk, then add the melted butter or oil, and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Add the wet mixture to your dry ingredients and mix together until well combined. Next, dissolve the coffee in the boiling water and add to the cake mixture. Mix until it has a nice shine to it, then split your mixture evenly between the two tins. Bake for 30–35 minutes, checking that the cakes are cooked by sticking a skewer into the centre – if it comes out clean, then they’re done. Leave to cool for 10 minutes in the tins before turning out onto a wire rack to cool completely. Spoon the icing onto one of the cooled cakes and spread evenly to the edges. Place your other cake on top, spoon more icing on top and evenly spread it to the edges, adding enough for the icing to just start going over the edges – you can then spread the icing around the sides too so that the cake is completely covered. Slice and enjoy!

Making it dairy-free? Replace the butter with a (hard) dairy-free alternative to butter. Ensure the chocolate and cocoa powder are both dairy-free. Use dairy-free milk. Use a dairy-free alternative to double cream.

Making it vegan? Follow the advice above to make it dairy-free and replace the eggs with 6 Tbsp aquafaba (whisked until frothy). For more delicious recipes, including Becky Excell's gluten-free banoffee pie, head to canberraweekly.com.au

That’s arts and entertainment Raider Nick launches new podcast on eve of 2021 NRL season

The Raider Nick Podcast, a new show celebrating the past, present and future of the Canberra Raiders, is being launched this week ahead of the 2021 NRL season. Nick Risteski, known by his on-air handle Raider Nick, will be joined on the podcast by a couple of his childhood heroes, his cocommentator for Raiders on Mix, Phil Small, and Raiders 1994 premiership player, Paul Osborne. With the first episode releasing Friday 5 March, Raider Nick told Canberra Weekly he’s excited to share the podcast with the Green Machine fan base. “We’re just going to have a bit of fun, some light-hearted stuff, but won’t be afraid to go indepth if we have to,” Raider Nick said. “We definitely plan to dial up some old teammates of Ozzy, some old Raiders boys and also talk to some of the new boys as well.” For Small and Osborne, the weekly Raider Nick Podcast will be a reunion of sorts, the duo having hosted a local TV show in the 1990s called League Round Up. “It had a bit of a cult following; it was one of 30

those shows that was on late at night on WIN after Frasier, and as a young kid I would sit up watching that,” Raider Nick said. “They had great banter, great chemistry and we’re bringing that to the show. “The moment they both walked into the studio, it was like nothing had changed … To be able to sit here in 2021 and have a show with them is just awesome.” The Raider Nick Podcast is available from Friday 5 March through most podcasting apps.

Canberra fitness expert to star in ‘Ultimate Tag’ Local fitness expert and athlete Jenna Douros will star in Channel Seven’s newest sportsentertainment offering Ultimate Tag as Ricochet. Inspired by one of Douros’ all-time favourite shows, Gladiators, she said the opportunity to be a pro tagger in the Australian iteration of Ultimate Tag is a childhood dream come true. “When I was approached to go on the show I asked about joining as a pro tagger,” she said. “I wanted to chase the people and have that element of flair on the show and they said I was a great fit.”

Local fitness expert and athlete Jenna Douros will star as Ricochet in Channel Seven’s newest sports-entertainment offering, Ultimate Tag. Image supplied.

Douros had little time to adjust her training having received just two weeks’ notice she was cast before being thrust into a month of shooting every day for 14 hours a day. The schedule was about as gruelling as a mere mortal would find doing one of Douros’ workouts. “It was a full month of filming every single day chasing after people,” she said. “The great thing I had up my sleeve was a broad balance of skills,” she said. “I train all sorts of different training methodologies because otherwise I get bored really quickly.” Ultimate Tag has both a male and female competition, an aspect of the show Douros praised. “I feel that having the ability to have a level playing field for a male and female category was really unique and really needed for our day and age,” she said. “It will inspire younger girls and women to aspire to what they see.” A born and raised Canberran whose work in the fitness industry has seen her travel across the world, Douros said she loves living in “the adventure capital”. “We’re two hours from snow, two hours from beach – what’s not to love,” she said. “The fitness community in Canberra is unlike anything else … it’s a close-knit community, and I think whatever industry you’re in, you’re going to find that here. Ultimate Tag will premiere on Channel Seven this Sunday 7 March 7pm.

NGA’s ‘Botticelli to Van Gogh’ opens 5 March One of the first major international exhibitions in the Southern Hemisphere since COVID, Botticelli to Van Gogh: Masterpieces from the National Gallery, London opens at the National Gallery of Australia (NGA) this Friday 5 March. Exclusive to Canberra, the exhibition includes 60 paintings by 57 of Europe’s most revered artists and spans 500 years of art making, from the 15th century to the turn of the 20th century. The largest group of works to ever travel outside of the United Kingdom in the National Gallery’s 192-year history, Botticelli to Van Gogh includes highlights such as Rembrandt’s Self-portrait at the age of 34 1640, Vermeer’s A young woman seated at a virginal circa 1670 and Van Gogh’s much-loved Sunflowers 1888. “Van Gogh’s Sunflowers 1888 is one of the world’s most popular and widely recognised works of

modern art,” NGA director Nick Mitzevich said. “Sunflowers has only been lent outside the British capital on two occasions since its acquisition by the National Gallery, London, in 1924 and now audiences will be able to see it in Canberra.” The National Gallery, London, director Gabriele Finaldi said sharing these exceptional paintings with the National Gallery of Australia was a remarkable event for his institution. “This is an unprecedented opportunity to share the breadth of our collection and expertise with Australian visitors. We hope we will inspire in everyone who comes to the exhibition a passion for these great paintings,” Finaldi said. In the 1970s, the stretch of Sydney’s Northern Beaches linked by Barrenjoey Road seemed like a slice of paradise. Golden beaches on one side and the rugged bushland of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park on the other. In reality, however, the Northern Beaches had a dark side that only came clear following the disappearance of local teenager Trudie Adams in 1978, while hitchhiking home after a dance at a local surf club. In the aftermath of the unsolved disappearance, the police eventually turned their attention to the area and found a disturbing culture of drug importation, predatory men and countless cases of abduction and rape that were rarely reported or acted upon. In Barrenjoey Road, reporters Neil Mercer and Ruby Jones do a marvellous job of detailing Trudie’s tragic disappearance and the events that followed. With a clear journalistic eye for detail and the telling anecdote, they paint a disturbing picture of what it was like for young women in the Northern Beaches at the time and of the incompetence of the police investigation. Along the way to explaining why the disappearance was never solved, they provide chilling details of the possible involvement of a deviant criminal and of highlevel police corruption. It is a fascinating true crime account, and a compelling portrait of what life was like in the 1970s. The cultural attitudes towards women, the reluctance of police to investigate claims of sexual assault and the risks of hitch-hiking, which most of us did, unfortunately ring true. The attack on Trudie is horrific, but so too are the many unreported, or not investigated, cases that the authors have uncovered, including one where a young woman in a car was chased by three groups of men who tried to run her off the road. Probably the best and most disturbing non-fiction book I have read for quite a while. Highly recommended.

The Canberra Short Film Festival will return for part two of their COVID-delayed, 25th anniversary season from Wednesday 17 March. Running over 12 nights across four venues, the festival showcases the best of short films from all over the world with a special spotlight on the best of Canberra’s local filmmaking. Last year marked 25 years of the festival, and, despite the pandemic, they held a reduced season in November.

In 2020, the festival received a record number of submissions with over 700 films from Canberra, Australia and the world submitted across nine categories. “We were amazed by the volume of films that came in … we had almost double the number from the previous year,” said festival director John Frohlich. “I think this reflects the strong reputation the festival has developed both in Australia and internationally.” Visit csff.com.au for more.

Now showing Minari (PG) In the 1980s, the Korean-American Yi family arrive at their new 50-acre plot in rural Arkansas. Away from their mundane chicken-sexing job in California, patriarch Jacob (Steven Yeun) passionately plans to grow Korean fruit and vegetables to sell to vendors in Dallas. Jacob’s wife Monica (Han Ye-ri) however does not share her husband’s joy and worries about their young son David’s (Alan Kim) heart condition. Soon the duo arranges for Monica’s mother Soon-Ja (Youn Yuh-jung) to move in for the benefit of the family. Based on the writer-director’s real-life experiences, Minari is multifaceted; it is as simple or as complex as one wants it to be. Following the Yi family as they journey even further into the heart of America, Jacob searches for the American dream, determined

to provide for his family whilst also paying homage to his roots to pass his legacy to David. Monica, however, feels the pull back to the relative safety, albeit restrictiveness, of California. Through David’s eyes, the gambling and potty-mouthed SoonJa is representative of Korea. Having never met her before or seen Korea, the cherub-faced David is a product of two worlds, finding difficulty reconciling the fact Soon-Ja does not measure up to the preconceived notions of a stereotypical Western grandmother. Verdict: A beautiful story about strong characters told simply illustrating the immigrant experience. Like the minari plant, the family is humble, useful, resilient, and thrives on very little. 4.5 stars. Minari is showing at Dendy and Palace Electric cinemas. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

The Vein Institute advertising moment

The Vein Institute team, led by Dr Zil Yassine (pictured), specialise in surgery-free treatment for varicose veins.

How to treat your varicose veins without surgery The Vein Institute are specialists in the safe and effective treatment of varicose veins, with no surgery and minimal downtime. Led by director Dr Zil Yassine, alongside his dedicated and expert team, the Vein Institute uses the latest technology from Europe and the USA to treat the veins in their Canberra clinic – walk in and walk out with the legs of your dreams!

Varicose veins can cause symptoms such as pain and heaviness in the legs and chronic swelling in the lower legs and ankles.

What are varicose veins? Did you know that one in three Australians suffer from a vein disorder such as varicose veins? Varicose veins can occur when your vein valves are not functioning properly. Faulty or weak one-way valves will allow blood to flow backwards and collect in your vein, which will eventually lead to the swollen, twisted looking veins.

Dr Yassine says veins are an integral part of the circulation system, taking de-oxygenated blood back to the heart. This is why vein conditions should always be taken seriously. “Issues with your veins are likely linked to poor blood circulation and could therefore lead to health concerns related to your heart and lungs.”

What are the signs and symptoms? While some people experience little or no symptoms at all, others can experience some or all of the following, says Dr Yassine. “In general, vein pain is considered vague and dull rather than sharp or immediate. If you raise your legs and the pain goes away, this is an indication your pain is vein related.” Signs and symptoms can include: • Pain, itching or heaviness in the legs • Burning, throbbing or muscle cramping

• Pain that intensifies after long periods sitting or standing • Chronic swelling in the lower legs or ankles “Each individual is different; however, there are some cases where, over time, circulation may become worse and cause changes in the colour and texture of the legs. “For some patients, if varicose veins are left untreated for too long, they can cause swelling in the legs and pigmentation of the skin. In rare cases, they can even cause ulcers.”

What are the treatment options? It’s important to treat varicose veins in a timely manner to minimise the risk of developing other health issues, says Dr Yassine. Surgical “stripping” of the veins often requires a hospital stay and a lengthy recovery period. Fortunately, varicose veins can be treated without surgery using laser technology, a treatment option which is growing in popularity. The Vein Institute’s dedicated team of vein specialists use laser treatments as well as injections and the newest medical superglue treatments to treat varicose veins, with all treatment plans tailored to the individual patient’s circumstances and needs. All treatments at the Vein

Institute begin with an initial consultation, where one of the doctors will perform an ultrasound to determine the cause of the varicose veins. Once this has been done, they will discuss your treatment options and determine the best course of action. After the treatment, the doctors will assess your case and may recommend further treatment or simply a followup appointment to monitor progress and recovery. Dr Yassine says the sensation of the laser treatments can be likened to that of a blood test or an injection, with many patients opting to read a book or magazine during the procedure – you can even request to hear your favourite songs!

The Vein Institute uses the latest technological treatments for varicose veins, which have minimal pain and discomfort associated with them.

Why choose non-surgical treatment? Dr Yassine says non-surgical treatments have minimal pain and discomfort associated with them and require very little recovery and downtime post-procedure. “The new laser procedures are as effective as surgical intervention and generally considered to be safer.” Appointments are walk-in, walk-out, and take less than 45 minutes per treatment. ‘‘Our patients describe visits to the Vein Institute as being like quick visits to their local doctor and are quite thankful that they don’t need any time off work,” says Dr Yassine. Compression stockings are

only required for a few days after non-surgical treatment, compared with weeks and even months post-surgery. Now that we’re heading into the cooler months, it is a good time to start thinking about treatment for your varicose veins at the Vein Institute, so you can step out with your new legs in time for the warmer weather later in the year! All treatments at the Vein Institute are performed in a private medical clinic, with COVID-19 protocols and procedures in place. Medicare rebates apply and Medipay payment plans are available.

Busy? Try this super-quick workout As we ease into the third month of the year, it seems we’re already busy. With kids going in and out to school and sports on top of work and other activities, it can be hard to find the time (or the motivation!) to get moving. Here is a great workout that only takes 15 minutes. If you happen

to find yourself with a bit of extra time, try doing it twice for a halfhour session. It’s all body weightbased, too, so there’s no equipment required. Do each of the following exercises for a full 60 seconds, if you can: • Walking/jogging on the spot • Squats

• Skipping • Toe taps • Walking/jogging on the spot • Lunges • Agility jumps – place a marker 1m to your left and another 1m to your right; jump left to touch the marker and the repeat on the opposite side

Stretch to de-stress It’s important to focus on mental health as well as physical health, and take time out to rest, relax and re-focus. This is what I call an ‘out and back’, and it’s great for shaking off stress and taking some time out for you. • 10 mins walk/jog – head to an area where you’ll be able to sit down and spend a few minutes doing some stretches • Lower back rolls – lying on your back with your knees to your chest, roll left and right • Seated hamstring stretch – with your left leg out straight and your right leg bent, slowly run your hands down your left leg; repeat on the other side • Quad stretch – lying on your left side, grab your right ankle and move it back to your buttocks; repeat for the other leg • Back and shoulder stretch – on your knees, lean forward to place both hands flat on the ground and then, keeping your hands flat, sit your bottom down on your heels • Walk or jog home!

Bridgerton binge home inspo WITH HOME EDITOR CASSANDRA POWER

In its first five days of release, 63 million households around the world binged on Bridgerton, the racy Jane Austin-meets-Scandal drama from American TV producer Shonda Rhimes - confirming it as a cultural phenomenon. In the months since, the hit show has been linked with a 123% increase in web searches for corsets, its characters’ names have been tipped to top 2021 baby names, and Vogue Australia has reported “Regency” to be one of seven key trends to dominate the year. If you are a fan who can’t get enough of the Regency-era England trend, these expert tips will help turn your TV set inspo into a sophisticated luxe home reality. Victory Blinds interiors expert Stuart Clark weighs in:

Layering An easy way to replicate some of your favourite looks from the show is through layering, which creates an atmosphere of grandeur. To achieve a Bridgertonworthy look, try layering different textures and fabrics on the couch or on the bed using multiple cushions and throws. Blue is a signature colour of the Bridgerton family so include this with other pastels and a standout pattern. Layering doesn’t have to stop there; try hanging curtains over a blind or shutter. One combo that is not going away is layering curtains over a roman blind, as these are both soft window treatments that work well together. Try a patterned roman blind and

then a solid-coloured curtain to build a luxurious feel in any room.

Regency style décor Due to the benefits of sustainability, vintage furniture continues to trend in 2021. This style of interiors includes rich deep colours that are then contrasted with light, creamy colours and powder blues and soft greens.

Wisteria Searches for wisteria have grown since the show was released as many of us want to try and replicate the Bridgertons’ dreamy façade.

Panelling The popularity of panelling has been increasing in the last few years. The look uses period authenticity to add texture and detail to a room. Panel a whole wall to make a statement or just the lower half to

immediately add texture and make the room feel bigger and airier. If you want to inject some of the Bridgerton style into your home, try panelling one wall and then painting it a champagne colour for a modern take on what was once a dated interior trend. Early Settler is also jumping aboard the Bridgerton train, using the show’s glittering sets and costumes as inspo for their furniture and homewares. They suggest lush jewel and pastel tones like tangerine, saffron, amber, apricot, turquoise, blush pink, forest green and royal blue for our own salons, parlours and boudoirs. Velvet products add some escapist fun to the everyday, such as sumptuous sofas, clubby tub chairs, ottomans – fringy, dimply or shell shaped – and, of course, dog beds fit for a Duke.

A touch of Tuscany Giralang 42 Baracchi Crescent This Tuscan-style home in Giralang has been owned by the same family since the 1970s, and McGrath North Canberra sales agent Sam McGregor says it’s “as unique as they come”. “This home is suited to any family that wants space, privacy and room to grow,” he says. “This is a forever home that no family could ever grow out of – the backyard is perfect for young children; the downstairs space is perfect for Grandma, or those same young children when they grow into teenagers.” Set on a “huge” block, high on “the street to live on in Giralang”, 42 Baracchi Crescent enjoys views across North Canberra to the Brindabellas.

“The house itself sits on the rear of a battle-axe block – which for this property, is a major benefit,” McGregor says. “It sits above most of, it not all of the street, backs well-kept parkland and reserves, and is both amazingly private and easily accessible.” The home boasts five bedrooms, myriad living spaces both upstairs and down, and a back garden filled with lawns, fruit trees and flowers. “Photos do not do this home justice – it presents as it did the day it was built,” says McGregor. “Lovingly preserved, this is a turnkey ready to be lived in as is or updated at its new owner’s leisure. Weekly market wrap Canberrans in an ‘enviable’ position After weeks of persistently high auction clearance rates, the CoreLogic Hedonic Home Value Index results reported property values in Canberra increased by 1.9% during February. This was comprised of house values increasing by 2.2% and units 0.7%. Robust growth across both market segments demonstrates the most expensive place in the real estate market is sitting on the sidelines. Housing values are rising across each of the capital city and rest of state regions, demonstrating the diverse nature of this housing upswing. According to CoreLogic’s research director, Tim Lawless, a synchronised growth phase like this hasn’t been seen in Australia for more than a decade. “The last time we saw a sustained period where every 42

capital city and rest of state region was rising in value was mid-2009 through to early 2010, as post-GFC stimulus fuelled buyer demand.” Sydney and Melbourne were among the strongest performing markets, recording a 2.5% and 2.1% lift in home values over the month respectively, as Australia’s two largest cities caught up from weaker performance through 2020. The quarterly trend, however, is still favouring the smaller cities; Darwin housing values rose 5.5% over the past three months, Hobart values rose 4.8% and Perth is up 4.2%. “Whether this newfound growth in Sydney and Melbourne can be sustained is unclear. Both cities are still recording values below their earlier peaks, however, at this current rate of appreciation it will not be long before Australia’s two

– but everything can be.” He notes the increasing popularity of Giralang; “on the cusp of a boom because of its proximity to the City centre”. “Its neighbouring suburb Kaleen has a seen a dramatic upswing in price in the last 12 months, and buyers are looking toward Giralang because of the comparative value it presents.”

most expensive capital city markets are moving through new record highs. With household incomes expected to remain subdued and stimulus winding down, it is likely affordability will once again become a challenge in these cities,” Mr Lawless said. Canberrans have the enviable position of residing in the second most affordable jurisdiction for housing and rental costs, calculated by the percentage of median weekly household income devoted to paying average mortgage or rental commitments. Affordability has been key to insulating Canberra’s property market against adverse conditions, and in this cycle could see values continue rising after other cities begin to plateau. Extremely competitive market conditions have been sustained by local demand and net interstate migration. Upon completion of the global COVID-19 vaccine rollout and the re-opening of borders to

overseas travel, I believe the tap will turn back on for Canberra’s biggest driver of population growth, net overseas migration. Nominal cases of virus infection resulted in many Canberrans enjoying similar lifestyles to the ones they had pre-pandemic, albeit with social distancing and a sea of QR codes. in the stars ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

You’re in a buoyant mood and everyone will be bowled over by your good humour. Even if things aren’t all going to your liking, somehow you will find a way to rise above your problems and find something to smile about.

You’re in a health-conscious mood and will enjoy shopping for products that make you look good and feel good. You might splash out on a therapy or treatment that connects with your soul. Should you still need some relaxation, you’ll find it by spending time near water.

It is time to expand your world and to give your brain a good workout. You may find yourself becoming interested in philosophical or religious questions. You seem to be filled with confidence and sparkle, and your sense of humour will be obvious to everyone who meets you.

You are in sparkling form and eager to prove yourself at work. This is the ideal time to deal with financial or legal matters that need your attention, especially if they involve filling in complicated forms or applications. Mars is reminding you to concentrate on your health.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

Friends and other contacts are about to play an important role in your life. This is a good time for mixing pleasure with business, as you are at your most charming and will be able to impress some important people.

Don’t be tempted to cut corners in important jobs or neglect to read small print on official papers. You have a detective-like mind and if you are your usual diligent self, you will be able to unravel any problems that have sprung up with official documents or close relationships.

You’re in the mood to enjoy yourself and the planets are putting you in a gregarious mindset. Get out your party clothes, let your hair down and start making up for lost time. If you don’t have any events lined up, invite a few people around to your place.

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

It is time to put your thoughts across to others and to get involved in discussions and negotiations. You’ll want to listen to what others think as well as put your own views forward. It is time to focus on creating a greater sense of harmony in your closest relationships.

Happy birthday Pisces! It’s all go, especially on the home front. You could have lots of visitors and enough interruptions to keep you on your toes. Spend time chatting with siblings, neighbours and other family members as you’ll enjoy catching up with all the news.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY Jupiter and Mars in your financial sector is good news for your finances as it suggests a windfall, or your earning power will go up. It is also a good time to make some clever investments, provided that you can afford them, of course.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE Mars in Gemini puts you in an outgoing and exuberant mood. You’re now ready to take the initiative and to put plans into action; you’ll also have renewed confidence and energy. Rather than sit around and wait for things to happen, you’ll want to take the bull by the horns and speed up many areas of your life.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT Mars activates your career zone making you eager to push ahead with your ambitions and long-term goals. It will certainly be easy to make a good impression on your boss and those who count. You will want to take centre stage, even if this isn’t your usual position. This is your chance to put your hidden skills on display.

Together, the pair traverse new ground with one another. Thanks to Dendy Canberra Centre, Canberra Weekly has 6 x Unsound (MA 15+) in-season double passes to be won.
