thursday 11 march 2021
This week... Greetings, dear readers. This glorious autumnal weather reminds me of my first 12 months in Canberra. Having migrated from Queensland in late May 1985, I’d never felt so cold in my life! Spring and summer rolled on, cooler and damper than I’d been used to up north and I was beginning to wonder if things would ever heat up. In January and February, the mercury hit 30 a few times and then March arrived, bringing four halcyon weeks of sunshine and maximums in the mid-20s, experiencing great walks and balmy evenings listening to live jazz in the Sculpture Gardens. Bliss. That was when I finally fell in love with my newly adopted hometown and autumn entrenched itself as my favourite of Canberra’s four distinct seasons. Which leads me to share one of my all-time favourite poems by Chinese monk, Wu Men Hui-k’ai (1183-1260): Ten thousand flowers in spring, the moon in autumn, a cool breeze in summer, snow in winter. If your mind isn’t clouded by unnecessary things, this is the best season of your life. Reasons to be grateful this past week include Goldilocks weather, a glorious Canberra Day long weekend, a fun night at the Enlighten illuminations, opening night of the Alliance Française French Film Festival, and a very special preview of the National Gallery of Australia’s exquisite Botticelli to Van Gogh exhibition. Sensational! - Julie Samaras

news ACT should have right to vote on euthanasia, politicians argue The Tasmanian Parliament is on the verge of legalising euthanasia, joining Victoria and WA. NSW and SA voted not to legalise euthanasia, and Queensland is debating the topic. But the ACT and the NT have been barred from voting on voluntary assisted dying for 25 years. Labor MP Dr Andrew Leigh will move at the next sitting for the Territories to be able to legislate on euthanasia, while Tara Cheyne, ACT Minister for Human Rights, and NT AttorneyGeneral Selena Uibo have written to Federal politicians, presenting it as an issue of selfdetermination and justice. The Euthanasia Laws Act 1997 (the so-called Andrews Bill, named after Victorian Liberal backbencher Kevin Andrews MP) prevents the ACT, the NT and Norfolk Island from passing laws permitting euthanasia. The NT had legalised euthanasia in 1995, by the Rights of the Terminally Ill Act 1995. The 1997 Act amends the ACT (Self-Government) Act 1988 and the NT (Self-Government) Act 1978, repealing the NT euthanasia act. Dr Leigh will move to amend these laws, restoring the right of Territories to determine
their own laws on euthanasia. “The anachronistic Andrews Bill means that a quarter of a century since it was passed, 700,000 Australians who live in the NT or the ACT are still unable to participate in a democratic process to resolve community approaches to euthanasia,” Dr Leigh said in his Notice of Motion. Appealing the Bill, he argued, would return to the Territories legal powers held by other Australian jurisdictions. It would not direct that either Territory should legislate on euthanasia, but merely allow them to do so if appropriate. Ms Cheyne and Ms Uibo believed there was “stark inequity” between States and Territories regarding voluntary assisted dying, and that the persistence of this situation was inconsistent with Australia’s international human rights obligations. “It is untenable and indefensible,” Ms Cheyne said. They argue that prohibiting Territory citizens from deciding for themselves – through their elected representatives – whether to legislate on voluntary assisted dying violates the International
Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. “It is hard to fathom – and embarrassing – that the Federal Government allows a situation to persist which limits some residents’ human rights in our own country,” Ms Cheyne said. “This is a simple legislative change for the Federal Government to propose and enact which would cost nothing. But it would mean so much to ACT and NT residents – and right a wrong that has persisted for decades.” Elizabeth Lee, leader of the Canberra Liberals, said her party supported the ACT Legislative Assembly being given the power to legislate on this issue, but would continue to treat euthanasia as a conscience issue. Ms Lee said she had raised this matter with the Prime Minister. ACT Liberal Senator Zed Seselja voted against a recent attempt to repeal the Andrews Bill, the Restoring Territory Rights (Assisted Suicide Legislation) Bill 2015. However, although Mr Seselja opposes euthanasia on human rights grounds, he has said he is open to the ACT having broader legislative rights. - Nick Fuller
Civic street art celebrates local Olympian Last Friday 5 March, the final brushstrokes dried on a mural that aims to ensure Canberran pedestrians will be inspired by Olympic BMX rider Caroline Buchanan’s homegrown talent and tenacity well into the future. One of Canberra’s most successful BMX riders, Caroline Buchanan has spent the past year training hard to qualify for her third Olympics, in Tokyo, which would be her last. The 30-year-old’s home track is at the Tuggeranong Vikings BMX Club, and it was there she found her love for the sport, before going on to win eight BMX and mountain bike world championships. The colourful mural at the mouth of Tocumwal Lane, Civic, says ‘Choose to Challenge’, which was one of the themes of International Women’s Day 2021, celebrated on 8 March. Buchanan said the phrase held a lot of meaning for her. “I was a five-year-old girl who grew up in the sport of BMX, which used to be a boy’s sport,” she said. “I’ve really chosen that path, to be 10

something that I couldn’t see, so for me this really resonates for that little girl who followed that dream all the way to the top to the Olympics.” Buchanan is preparing for her “biggest challenge yet”, having regained her form and returned to the sport after more than two years recovering from injury. The mural was painted by students from Buchanan’s old school, Erindale College, with the guidance of local artist Bohie Palecek, who came up with the bright, bold plan. “I was definitely trying to capture Caroline’s unbelievable energy with this design,” Palecek said. Seven college students aged 16-18 worked with Palecek through a series of workshops last week and spent time with Buchanan to hear more about her journey. Like the students, Palecek found the project equally rewarding. “Working with the students, talking about gender equality and talking about breaking gender stereotypes is really important to me,” she said. Palecek, who is also a BMX rider, said she

grew up in a similar world as Buchanan. “It’s the same as [with] street art, we didn’t have female role models to look up to.” Her work can be found on the PCYC building in Turner, the Kambri district at ANU, Narrabundah 2 Sports Pavilion and at UC. The wall featuring the mural was provided by the Canberra Centre and the project was funded by the ACT Government’s street art program, with support from YWCA Canberra. - Rosa Ritchie

news Parents galled by French leave from Belconnen High School “J’en perds mon latin,” primary school students in the Belconnen district might exclaim in consternation; they are certainly at risk of losing their French. Children at Hawker and Weetangera primary schools learn French since kindergarten, and expect to continue when they reach Belconnen High School. But Belconnen High discontinued French (and Indonesian) in 2017, due to a shortage of language teachers. Instead, the school’s Year 7 and 8 students learn about local Aboriginal cultural heritage and languages (Connecting to Country). The ACT Government requires these grades to learn one of eight priority languages for at least 150 minutes a week, and schools may offer Indigenous languages. From Year 9, Belconnen High students can learn Spanish, Mandarin and Japanese. But no French. Kristen Baker, a Hawker Primary mother, does not think this is good enough. She has launched a petition to the ACT Legislative Assembly, sponsored by Elizabeth Kikkert MLA, calling for French to recommence at Belconnen, and for the government to attract or train a specialist teacher.
“You’ve got kids learning from four years old,” Ms Baker said. “To stop them in their formative years from cementing that learning is a crying shame.” Her daughters (now in fifth and sixth grade) have learnt French for seven years – and they were surprised and disappointed when they discovered French was not offered at Belconnen High. Her eldest, in particular, has a deep thirst for French culture, and wants to travel or even live there one day. “You see it feeding their soul in terms of an appreciation of the world outside Canberra. That’s a beautiful thing to watch in your kids.” Seven years of language learning is almost double what government policy requires and offers learners a strong foundation, Mrs Kikkert said. “A two-year gap in learning is doing them a disservice,” Ms Baker said. “That break will really set them back.” The Bakers believe Connecting to Country should continue, but not at the expense of immersion in language. There are many French tutors in Canberra, Ms Baker said, such as at the
Alliance Française; perhaps Belconnen High could offer French outside core hours, after school or in lunchtimes – but that would be another cocurricular activity in a busy life. Ms Baker is even considering moving outside the Belconnen region for schools if she must. The ACT Education Directorate recruited 13 language teachers for Canberra schools in a national recruitment round last August and intend to hold another targeted recruitment drive towards the end of this year. The ACT Government explained Australia was experiencing a nationwide “drought” of language teachers, made worse by COVID-19 restrictions on overseas employment. Ms Baker considers this a catch-22 situation: “If the lack of teaching staff is truly the issue, shouldn’t we be teaching more children?” She was also concerned other schools might have discontinued languages. She hoped her petition would prompt parents to look closely at whether high schools were offering the languages they should. - Nick Fuller

news ACT sees ‘significant’ increased demand for LGBTIQA+ support services There has been a significant increase in demand for LGBTIQA+ support services in the ACT, according to local support organisation, Meridian. Meridian CEO Philippa Moss said the organisation has been managing an increase in demand for around two to 2.5 years. This includes a 272% increase in clients who identify or are exploring identity options as trans, gender diverse and/or non-binary, which, according to Ms Moss, is a “really super significant” statistic. As well, the organisation has seen an increase in counselling need from clients who “tentatively identify as men who have sex with men with the intersection of a culturally and linguistically diverse identity”. Demand has also increased for people who identify with a pattern of risky substance abuse behaviour. “I think it’s a range of things that have been impacting the LGBTIQA+ community,
[the increase in demand] would probably have started around the marriage equality debate,” Ms Moss said. “We’ve had lots of public debates; that really impacts people … and then the sort of natural disasters stuff and COVID.” Similarly, data from LGBTIQA+ peer support organisation QLife, prepared for ANZ’s Mardi Gras campaign, shows a 65% increase in demand for support from the ACT, the second highest in the country behind Tasmania. Nationally, the organisation reported a 58% increase in the volume of calls and enquiries in the second half of 2020, with a more than 70% increase from people under 18. Ms Moss said while the spike from the ACT could be attributed to increased visibility for QLife and its services, there is certainly a need for more support for people in the ACT. “There is absolutely no doubt that we need increased funding to service the demand that
we’re seeing and the increased demand that we’re seeing, and that’s something that we’re advocating and lobbying for with government and trying to fundraise,” she said. “Canberra’s a really progressive place in many ways, and the government do really good things … but the people who are marginalised and on the edge kind of sometimes get hidden in all that ‘glossy stuff’.” If you or someone you know needs support, you can contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 or QLife on 1800 184 527. news ACT learner driver syllabus to be rewritten Chosen by the ACT Government to overhaul the pre-learner driver’s licence course, Stay Road Right has now launched a dedicated road safety centre in the Canberra region. Stay Road Right was selected by the ACT Government to overhaul the syllabus of the two-day pre-learner licence training course, previously called Road Ready. The driver equivalent of Stay Upright, a school for motorcycle riders, Stay Road Right is accredited to support Canberra’s learner drivers from the first phase of the new licensing scheme, providing the mandatory two-day Pre-Learner Licence Training Course, two new voluntary safety courses, as well as on-the-road driver training with skilled driving instructors. Glen McGrath, Stay Upright regional manager NSW, ACT and QLD, said Stay Road Right won the tender issued by the ACT Government in 2019 to “rewrite the 20-year-old pre-learner licence course curriculum”. “The new curriculum, which is due to be rolled out soon, follows the ACT Government’s desire to modernise the course content by adding adult

educational learning concepts and changing the focus of learning from a fear-based platform to self-assessment and risk management,” Mr McGrath said. Founded in 1981, Stay Upright is Australia’s first and largest motorcycle training provider and has helped train Canberra’s motorcycle riders for over two decades. Simon McAdie, ACT regional manager at Stay Road Right, said the organisation was dedicated to ensuring the safety of all road users on Canberra’s road. “It’s very exciting to bring the syllabus into the 21st century,” he said. “Road safety is road safety. We were very excited to cross over to cars. In the years we have had teaching motorcycle riders to keep themselves safe, we’re trying to pass that on with a car context.” Between 2006 and 2017, 15 drivers under the age of 25 lost their lives in the ACT, driving Stay Road Right to focus on reducing distractions for inexperienced drivers. “Back when the original syllabus was written, mobile phones weren’t an issue and research has

told us the course needed a bit more about the mental aspect of how the driver acts on the road,” Mr McAdie said. “When the new syllabus was written it was advised to stay away from the fear-based education and be more interactive with the students. It’s getting them to think more about what they’re doing.” While the new learner drivers’ course is still pending ACT Government approval, the dedicated road safety centre in Queanbeyan will provide all elements of the ACT’s new graduated licensing scheme.

Taking one step at a time, the Marching Ants are keeping the spirit of Relay for Life ignited as they celebrate survivors and remember loved ones lost to cancer. Relay for Life is a global movement to bring communities together to create a cancer-free future, raising vital funds for the Cancer Council’s research, prevention and support services. This year, in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Canberra community has been invited to “Relay Your Way” in a challenge of their own choosing. The Marching Ants have been participating in the ACT’s Relay for Life for 13 years and plan to walk bridge to bridge around Lake Burley Griffin to show their support. Sisters Maria and Helen Rodriguez have been involved in the Marching Ants since the team started in 2009. They will be relaying on Saturday 20 March to honour their mother before having a celebratory remembrance afterwards for those lost. “It would have been my mum’s 56th wedding anniversary,” Maria said. “We decided to do it on that day to celebrate her life … It’s an emotional day, so why not be together with your closest friends and family,” said Marching Ants team member, Jacqui Hewitt. Maria and Helen lost their mother to cancer in 2014, while other members of the Marching Ants have had family members fight cancer or have been diagnosed themselves. Jacqui lost her mother in 2013 to nonsmoker’s lung cancer and, five weeks later, her grandmother succumbed to a brain tumour. Denise Connolly was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 39. This year will be her 15th year cancer free. While disappointed this
year’s relay can’t be held as the traditional overnight event at the AIS, the Marching Ants plan to make the day just as special and fun filled. “One of the highlights is doing the survivors’ lap at the beginning of the relay,” Denise said. “I have always gotten to do that with Eddie, Maria and Helen’s dad, because he’s always marched for and with Maria Senior before she passed … that was always very special.” While uncertain of the logistics, Maria said they are hoping to continue the tradition of relaying for 24 hours. The team agrees that fundraising for the Cancer Council has never been as important following the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s a case of recognising that while the world changes around us, we need to adapt,” said Helen. “While COVID is the thing everyone talks about at the moment, it’s not the only thing we as humans need to fight against … millions of people die, have died and will die from cancer as well, so we need to recognise we can make a difference.” Another local Relay for Life team that will be walking the bridge-to-bridge walk on 20 March is the Bold Bandannas, who have been participating in the event since the Relay’s inception in 2000. Since then, they have raised a total of $460,000, including $50,000 in the past 12 months. The Bold Bandannas will cut the starting ribbon on the day and plan to accept donations from people they meet along the way to help the Cancer Council create a cancer-free future. - Erin Cross For more information or to donate, visit actcancer.org https://actcancer.org/fundraisingand-events/canberra-relay-for-life2021-relay-your-way/

Former Wing Commander Robyn Clay-Williams in the C-130 Hercules, one of the aircraft featured in a new commemorative coin set. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
RAAF centenary celebrations take flight on the face of a coin The Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) first female pilot, former Wing Commander Robyn ClayWilliams, flew to Canberra in a C-130 Hercules last Thursday, 4 March, to celebrate a newly minted commemorative coin set
featuring iconic aircraft. The Royal Australian Mint joined forces with the RAAF to design the collection of coins, ‘A Century of Air Power’, depicting the evolution of Air Force aviation in Australia. As a test pilot, Ms Clay-Williams
gained experience flying over 20 aircraft types and is particularly well acquainted with one depicted in the coin set – the C-130 Hercules, which she helped acquire in the late 1990s. The 11-piece collection of 50 cent coins includes 10 classic aircraft and one coin dedicated to the people who keep them in the air. Royal Australian Mint CEO Leigh Gordon, who served in the RAAF for 37 years, was present at the launch. He said the Australian Mint played a strong role helping Australia tell the story of its history – celebrating anniversaries, significant organisations and events. “And that certainly drives the Mint, and the people in the Mint.” The Hercules has a 63-year long story within the RAAF; Ms ClayWilliams said it was a “real work horse” and lovely to fly. stations and troops in the Middle East. Ms Clay-Williams said the Mint’s new commemorative collection was special because coins were enduring. “It’s the sort of thing you might bury in a time capsule and dig up in 500 years and it would still be intact.” Present at the launch, Deputy Chief of Air Force, Air ViceMarshal Stephen Meredith, said the collection was an outstanding way to honour the service and sacrifice of the 350,000 people who served and the 11,100 who lost their lives in service to the RAAF over the last 100 years. The coin set is available in a limited mintage of 15,000, retailing for $175. Visitors to the Mint can also press their own RAAF coin from the Gallery Press. - Rosa Ritchie Find an extended version of this story and more photos online at canberraweekly.com.au

WorkSafe notices in Ginninderry WorkSafe ACT issued a number of notices to residential construction sites in Ginninderry on 3 March as part of their ongoing crackdown on worksite safety. Inspectors visited 25 sites in Ginninderry, issuing 19 improvement notices, three prohibition notices and one infringement notice. The notices were issued in relation to the risk of falls from heights,
unsafe scaffolding, electrical hazards, lack of amenities and signage, as well as safe work method statements not being in place or followed. Work Health and Safety Commissioner Jacqueline Agius said; “It’s time for industry to take action and start improving their work health and safety practices, because protecting your workers is not negotiable.”
The ACT has recorded its fourth road fatality for 2021 following the death of a 19-year-old man in a two-car collision in Hume in the early hours of Monday 8 March. About 1.20am, emergency services were called to a collision between a Toyota Corolla and
a Honda sedan on the Monaro Highway. ACT Ambulance Service paramedics attended to a 19-yearold driver; however, he was declared deceased at the scene. The other driver was transported to hospital for assessment.
Hands Up 4 CBR Giving Day The Hands Up 4 CBR Giving Day got underway on Tuesday 9 March, as 60 charities joined with Hands Across Canberra (HAC) to raise $500,000 over a 48-hour period in what is the region’s largest charitable fundraising appeal. By introducing the charities to the broader Canberra community, the event allows Canberrans to donate money to more local causes. Peter Gordon, CEO of HAC, said he has been humbled by the community’s response.
“The message for Canberrans is the majority of Canberrans are fine, we’re healthy, wealthy and living in a very connected city but there are some people who aren’t connected,” he said. “There are 300 charities in Canberra, all of whom do great work and all of whom need a lot of help. The more that we connect the 400,000 people in Canberra with those 300 charities, suddenly, we’re better off.” As at 3pm on 9 March, over $350,000 had aready been raised.

news Emergency services ‘need to reflect the communities we serve’ The ACT Emergency Services Agency (ACT ESA) celebrated International Women’s Day (8 March) by recognising the everyday women who provide emergency management services to the Canberra community. This year’s IWD theme was ‘Choose to challenge’, encouraging people to call out gender bias, inequality, stereotypes and to help forge an inclusive world. In 2015, the ACT Minister for Police and Emergency Services launched the ESA’s Women in Emergency Services Strategy to increase and develop women in the ACT’s four emergency services – ACT Ambulance, ACT Fire & Rescue (ACTF&R), ACT Rural Fire Service (RFS) and ACT State Emergency Service. Firefighter Merrin Starr joined ACTF&R five years ago after craving a job that was physical and allowed her to work with the community. She said young women need to see women on
firetrucks “so they can actually visualise that it’s an option for them when they do grow up”. For Brooke Turner, a Deputy Captain with the ACTRFS at Molonglo Station, when she walked into her first training session as a bushfire fighter 2015, she saw a sea of men. “I was little daunted,” she admitted. Six years later, she still loves volunteering and said the number of women in ACT RFS has increased. Mapping volunteer Giovanna Lorenzin has been working with the Mapping and Planning Support Group (MAPS) for 12 years, collecting intelligence from the fire grounds and the aerial survey to help plan how to fight fires. Her message to young women is “don’t be afraid to take on opportunities as they come up”. “Volunteering is a good way of starting out in a career because volunteering gives you the skills and connections that can be used to get a

career in that field,” she said. Alyssia Tennant has been volunteering with the SES at Gungahlin for about a year and believes one of the barriers to female participation in every industry “is being able to visibly see women doing the same thing”. “I think part of it is showing that there’s women in the service and making it seem accessible and seem like something that’s worth while doing,” Ms Tennant said. “Particularly in the SES, we really need to reflect the communities that we serve.” - Erin Cross

sport Lonergan seals Brumbies win with 55-metre bomb top of the Super Rugby AU ladder. Despite the win, there were a couple of sour notes for the Brumbies. Skipper Allan Alaalatoa faces a three-match suspension for a high shot, while hooker Connal McInerney will undergo surgery
for a broken fibula and will miss an extended period. The Brumbies now take on the other undefeated Super Rugby AU side, the Queensland Reds, at GIO Stadium on Saturday 13 March in a Grand Final rematch.

Ryan Lonergan drilled a 55-metre penalty goal after the final siren to hand the Brumbies a thrilling 27-24 victory over the Melbourne Rebels at GIO Stadium Canberra on Saturday night, 6 March. With the Brumbies faithful holding their breath, the replacement halfback
stepped up to take the pressure kick. He made sweet contact with the ball and it just fell over the the crossbar, sending the home crowd wild. The victory means the Brumbies remain undefeated through their first three matches of the season and on
The Canberra Racing Carnival produced two tremendous days of racing with Kalashnikov winning the Black Opal on Sunday 7 March before Mr Marathon Man took out the Canberra Cup on the Monday. Kalashnikov won the two-yearold 1200m race thanks to a gun ride from James McDonald and will now head towards the $3.5 million Golden Slipper at Rosehill on 20 March. It is the third Black Opal Stakes won by Peter and Paul Snowden after taking out the 2016 and 2020 editions. Monday’s racing endured some
hiccups with separate delays caused by the rails needing to be moved and then lightning. The Canberra Cup was delayed even further due to a fractious horse in the gates, but it was worth the wait as Mr Marathon Man crossed the line first from Dadoozdart in a thrilling finish. The win was the first Canberra Cup victory for both trainer Richard Litt and jockey Robbie Dolan. The Thoroughbred Park stables enjoyed a fruitful couple of days, with nine local winners from the 16 races.
Raiders ready to roll as 2021 season kicks off With the Canberra Raiders’ round one match only a few sleeps away, Canberra Weekly spoke to a couple of their star players about the upcoming season. First was young gun Bailey Simonsson, who said he was focused on securing a position on the wing after injury cut short his 2020 season. “My first season I floated around a bit, and last year I was floating around a bit too … but my goal has always been to lock down a spot,” said Simonsson. “I don’t mind playing either side. I think I’ll be playing on the right to start.” Since joining the club in 2013, veteran wing Jordan Rapana said this is the strongest he has seen the club depth wise. “When I get to the end of my 22

career, I want to be able to say I won a comp, especially with these boys.” Back-rower Elliott Whitehead said Hudson Young is the man to fill the void left by the departure of John Bateman. “I’ve been doing a lot of work with Hudson and I think he’ll fit into that role really well,” he said. “He’s played a lot in the middle and isn’t really used to being on the edge, defending your edge and check releasing, so we’ve been doing a lot of work on that and the positional plays as well.” The Raiders first game is against the Wests Tigers at GIO Stadium Canberra on Sunday 14 March 4.05pm. Whole pineapple cake Serves 8 1 pineapple 1 1/2 cups (150g) almond meal 2 3/4 cups (2505) desiccated coconut 1 tsp baking powder 6 eggs 250g caster sugar Toasted coconut flakes, to serve Natural or Greek yoghurt, to serve
Use it all
Preheat the oven to 160°C and line a 30cm loaf tin with baking paper. Cut the skin off the pineapple and set aside, then cut the flesh and core into small cubes and blitz them in a food processor until smooth. You’ll need 400g of pineapple purée for the batter.
Our food writer Libby Kimber this week encourages you to ‘use it all’, with two recipes for sweet treats that can be made with things you likely already have in the pantry.
Rhubarb and ricotta tea cake Serves 6-8 1 cup (150g) plain flour
Preheat the oven to 170°C. Line a 21cm round cake tin with baking paper. Whisk together the flour, baking powder and coconut in a large bowl and set aside.
1/2 cup (125ml) full-cream milk
In a stand mixer, cream the butter, sugar and lemon zest until light and fluffy, then add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Turn the mixer to low speed and mix in the ricotta, then add the flour mixture in three goes until just combined. With the mixer still running drizzle in the milk and lemon juice. Turn off the mixer and fold in the rhubarb, then pour into the prepared cake tin. Bake for 50 minutes or until lightly golden on top and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean.
125–150g rhubarb, trimmed and sliced into small pieces
The cake will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.
1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 cup (45g) desiccated coconut 1/2 cup (125g) unsalted butter 3/4 cup (150g) caster sugar Zest of 1 lemon, plus 2 tsp lemon juice 2 eggs 185g ricotta
You can replace the rhubarb with the same quantity of any fresh chopped fruit, and you can use any type of citrus zest and juice. We love the following flavours:
Whisk together the almond meal, desiccated coconut and baking powder in a large bowl and set aside. In a stand mixer with the whisk attachment, whisk the eggs and sugar on medium speed until pale and fluffy (or you can do this in a large bowl with a hand whisk). Add the pineapple purée to the egg mixture and whisk for another minute. Slowly add the dry ingredients in batches, whisking well after each addition. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin and bake for 50–60 minutes, until golden brown and a skewer inserted into the centre of the cake comes out clean. Meanwhile use the pineapple skin to make a pineapple skin syrup. Leave the cake to cool in the tin on a wire rack for 10 minutes before turning out. Serve straight away or keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week. Serve warm or toasted with the pineapple skin syrup, toasted coconut and yoghurt. Canberra wines make a comeback for 2021 Canberra’s wine industry endured a tough 2020, after drought, smoke taint, hail and then COVID-19 restrictions wreaked havoc for winemakers across the district. Picking is now underway for the 2021 vintage, and we are happy to report the news is much better for this year’s crops. CEO of Murrumbateman’s Four Winds Vineyard, Sarah Collingwood – who turned her spoiled 2020 grapes into gin – says the 2021 vintage is shaping up to be a good one. “We haven’t had a day over 40 degrees; the ripening’s taking a bit longer than we thought but the fruit’s looking really good,” she says. “We’re actually picking chardonnay today which is so exciting because that’s the first thing that’s come off our vineyards this season. “We’re just looking forward to getting them all in; once the grapes are in the winery it’s like they’re safe.” Similarly, Lake George Winery had to do away with some of their 2020 grapes, but this year’s harvest is looking good after rainfall and, thankfully, the absence of smoke and hail. “We’re seeing the shiraz is just flourishing,”
This year’s pinot grapes at Lake George Winery. Photos: Canberra Wines.
says owner-operator Sarah McDougall. “Everything’s looking perfect. “We’ve already picked chardonnay for sparkling and it was really exciting to get fruit into the winery and kick off vintage.” With hope on the horizon, Canberra’s famous cool climate wines will be on show for Canberra Wine Week, on this year from 21 to 29 March. This year’s event will celebrate 50 years of Canberra District wine, with a calendar of events including dinners, grape stomping, glamping, music and entertainment and a tasting featuring local winemakers at the launch event on 20 March. NGA director Nick Mitzevich said the 61 masterpieces that comprise the Botticelli to Van Gogh exhibition take visitors on a journey through the history of Western European art. Photos: Kerrie Brewer.
Coordinating curator Sally Foster said Botticelli to Van Gogh features some of the most important Western European artists of all time.
With international travel off the cards, the National Gallery of Australia is hoping Australians will make a cultural pilgrimage to Canberra this autumn to see the new blockbuster Botticelli to Van Gogh: Masterpieces from the National Gallery, London. An occasion four years in the making, it’s the first time the National Gallery, London has put an exhibition on the road containing their collection, as usually they would lend only an item or two at a time. Open from Friday 5 March until Monday 14 June, Botticelli to Van Gogh is a display of 61 masterpieces from 56 artists covering over 500 years of Western European art. The body of work coming to Canberra coincides with a once-in-50-years occurrence that these paintings aren’t hanging at the National Gallery, London. “We took the opportunity to be able to borrow the works during their own renovation period, so it’s a once in 50-years time that these would come off the permanent walls,” NGA director Nick Mitzevich told Canberra Weekly. “One of our guiding principles is to bring the best art to Australia … These artists are on the walls because they changed art history.” Coming together amidst the disruption COVID has had on international travel, Mitzevich said the Gallery has “worked very closely to define and orchestrate every step of the movement to the work going onto the wall” with their colleagues in London. “At the heart of it was making sure that we could move the works safely,” he said. “Every step of the way from the work coming off the walls at the National Gallery [London] to being
put into a commissioned crate that transports the work, to making sure that every element of that work doesn’t vibrate or move.” The exquisite paintings are expertly illuminated by new lighting installed into the Gallery’s temporary exhibition space as part of a $5 million renovation. “We thought if it was appropriate to bring an exhibition of this magnitude to Australia, we ourselves needed to be able to present them in the best way possible,” Mitzevich said.

Botticelli to Van Gogh a story, narrative and masterclass
Botticelli to Van Gogh takes visitors on a journey through the history of Western European art through seven themed rooms. “Each work leads to the next, it’s a story and a narrative but also a masterclass defining time and place,” Mitzevich said. “When you visit this exhibition, you don’t need to have an art history knowledge, we hopefully step you through the major points in history and time.” The first room is a showcase of early Italian Renaissance painting, where the innovation and metamorphosis of that era is visible. Following that is the Dutch paintings room. Featuring portraiture, still life and landscape paintings, it includes one of the most recognisable works of Western European art, Rembrandt’s Self Portrait at the Age of 34. “I feel like I'm looking into the eyes of the artist,” coordinating curator Sally Foster said of the work. “You see the power of the subject, how paint and canvas can come to life in three dimensions. This
portrait is unsurpassed in art history.” Following that is a room of British portraiture. It is through these commissioned works, Foster says, that the British aristocracy built an image of prestige and status they still hold in the eyes of many to this day. In that time, circa the 17th and 18th centuries, the British aristocracy would take a “grand tour” of Italy, often bringing back an exquisite painting of themselves on location. “People wanted to come back with beautiful souvenirs; they're not postcards, that’s for sure,” Foster smiled. The next room features their collection of Spanish art. Described as “an acquired taste”, both Foster and Mitzevich emphasised the influence of Spanish art on the neighbouring French artists of the impressionist and post-impressionist era. Landscapes follows, featuring grand, gorgeous paintings masterfully depicting vistas spanning in subject from Roman harbours to the northern European countryside. “This room is a revelation,” said Foster. “I love these big beautiful European landscapes.” Botticelli to Van Gogh’s final room, France and Modern Art, includes one of the exhibition’s most well-known and revered works, Van Gogh’s Sunflowers from 1888. “Sunflowers defines this moment where art has moved on from religious iconography and defining status,” Mitzevich said. Hung and presented in a way where the painting appears backlit, the actual experience of seeing Sunflowers up close was a profound one for the Gallery staff involved in executing the exhibition. “When we opened the crate, everyone in the room felt moved,” said Foster. Botticelli to Van Gogh: Masterpieces from the National Gallery, London is on display at the NGA 5 March until 14 June. Sessions are timed and bookings are required; nga.gov.au/masterpieces - Denholm Samaras
Mitzevich said the priceless artworks in Botticelli to Van Gogh coming to Canberra coincides with a once-in-50-years occurrence that they aren’t hanging at the National Gallery, London.

Kirrah Amosa elated ahead of Hamilton debut
Canberra performer Kirrah Amosa had “almost given up on thinking an opportunity like this was in my reach” before being cast in Hamilton last year. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
Canberra performer Kirrah Amosa is right now amid rehearsals as part of the cast of Hamilton, one of Australia’s most eagerly anticipated musicals. “It’s overwhelming in the best way, we’re all very excited and very ready,” she told Canberra Weekly. Amosa booked the part of standby for Eliza Hamilton, Angelica Schuyler, and Peggy/Maria midway through 2020 and commenced rehearsals in Sydney seven weeks ago. Her audition process started under less-than-ideal circumstances back in November 2019. “I went in to the in-person auditions in Sydney quite sick,” Amosa said. “I couldn’t really sing a lot of the Eliza material, which was quite disheartening … I went out of the audition knowing I couldn’t have given it my best.”
Despite these doubts, Amosa clearly did something right as the producers asked her back. A few emails and video auditions later, it was in the middle of last year’s brutal Canberra winter when Amosa found herself on Centrelink living in her parent’s basement that she received the call to say she’d been cast. “I’d almost given up on thinking an opportunity like this was in my reach … but here we are and I’m very proud to be representing my family, Canberrans and Samoan culture.” Speaking to Canberra Weekly just over two weeks before previews start at Sydney Lyric Theatre on 17 March, Amosa said there’s an “electric energy” in the rehearsal room. “Moving into the theatre will be such an added element that brings the whole story to life. Doing it in the rehearsal room is different without the props lighting and two levels in the set.” Tasked with being a standby for the three roles, Amosa said she’s been diligently soaking in everything she can. “I have OCD for learning this kind of material; I’m writing on notepads, on my phone taking notes trying to make sure I have all the information,” she said. It would be an understatement to say that since

debuting off-Broadway in 2015, Hamilton has been a smash hit in the USA. Despite the work chronicling the life of an historic American figure, Amosa said the musical will resonate with Australian audiences due to its relatability and exquisite soundtrack. “The story is about someone trying to work hard with the opportunities they’ve got,” she said. “I think Australia is filled with people like that; a lot of immigrants or people who don’t have much and are working their way to where they want to be. “When you look around you see faces of different shapes and colours and that’s what you’re going to find on stage, which is a really great breath of fresh air.” Amosa said emerging as an artist in her hometown of Canberra was made easier by the fact her father, Steve Amosa, is a well-established, successful musician here. “I was able to come from a place of immense strength and support through my family, which has definitely propelled me in the direction I am today,” she said. Hamilton opens at Sydney Lyric Theatre on Wednesday 17 March. Find an extended version of this story online at canberraweekly.com.au

Jeff Popple reviews three books about spies, surveillance and speaking to the dead. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com With My Little Eye by Sandra Hogan Allen & Unwin, $29.99
The Canadian High Commission proudly presents
Sandra Hogan’s With My Little Eye, is one of the strangest accounts of spying in Australia that you will ever read. Drawing on Sue-Ellen Doherty’s recollection of growing up in an ASIO family, it paints an intriguing picture of spying in the suburbs. SueEllen, and her brother and sister, actively participated in the work of their ASIO parents, as they staked-out meetings of communist sympathisers, had dinners with informants and even went on holidays with the Petrovs, who were in hiding from Russian assassins. A very interesting and readable account that throws a revealing light on the activities of ASIO in the 1950s and ‘60s.

The growth in surveillance has been one of the most spectacular changes of this century. From drones to license-plate readers to CCTV and facial recognition technology, people across the world are under surveillance to a level not deemed possible a mere 20 or 30 years ago. In addition, there is the monitoring that most of us voluntarily submit to through our phones and social media activities. Jon Fasman, the digital editor for the Economist, provides a fascinating and calm insight into the global rise of surveillance, both good and bad, and questions what it means for personal liberty and privacy. A scary but fascinating read.
Later by Stephen King Hardcase Crime, $19.99
Later is half the price and size of the usual bulky Stephen King new release. Written especially for niche American publishers Hard Case Crime, which specialise in new and reprinted hardboiled crime paperback fiction, it is a slimmed down version of a classic King thriller. It tells the story of Jamie Conklin, the son of a struggling, New York single mother, who has the unnatural ability of being able to talk to the dead. Jamie and his mother keep quiet about his ability, until he becomes involved in the schemes of an unreliable NYPD detective. A powerful and exciting coming of age story. Highly recommended.

time out Pollock’s ‘People Inside Me’ the opening First Seen work of 2021 Playwright Katie Pollock’s awardwinning work People Inside Me is first cab off the rank in 2021 for The Street’s annual program for theatremakers, First Seen. The program returns for its tenth year in 2021 with Pollock’s work to be streamed live from The Street on Friday 12 March at 5pm. Open to Canberrans and the wider Canberra diaspora, the now Sydney-based playwright described the program as a “pretty intense” process. “I’m waking up at 3am going ‘oh, I’d better make a note of that’ … It feels nice to be back working, wrestling with the words,” she said. Pollock started the creative development process at the City West theatre on 1 March. Without giving too much away about the work itself, Pollock said People Inside Me is about “sex and
death, as all good art should be”. “Of course, it also kind of a bit of a black comedy,” she said. “I’m exploring how we carry on after terrible losses and how we connect with other people.” People Inside Me has been in development for at least three years, having been awarded the 2018 Rodney Seaborn Playwrights Award. A prolific playwright, Pollock said she has worked on a number of projects over that time, her attention going back and forth between them. “Since that award I’ve done a few other drafts and had actors sit around the table and read it, and other people,” she said. “The difference with this is having bodies in the space, because that is the point of theatre; it’s not a novel. “I hope it means the work will be

more rigorous for it, so when you get to rehearsal, you’re just about making a play work on its feet.” Pollock praised The Street’s First Seen program, saying such creative development courses are “pretty rare”. “Usually, you have to deliver the script at rehearsal ready stage then you get in the room and don’t have enough time to rehearse it anyway. “It’s really important, it’s fantastic. I hope I can give The Street back something that shows how important it’s been.” The Street presents First Seen – People Inside Me by Katie Pollock, Friday 12 March 5pm via Vimeo and Zoom; tickets via donation @ thestreet.org.au

Now showing Chaos Walking (M) In the future, on a distant alien planet, young Todd Hewitt (Tom Holland) goes about his day in the agricultural commune of Prentisstown, which is populated by men who emit their thoughts; referred to as ‘the noise’. One day, Todd meets downed female astronaut Viola (Daisy Ridley). Based on the award-winning first novel of a young-adult sci-fi series, Chaos Walking is about a world where it is impossible to escape information overload. Whereas the novel has a solid concept with interesting twists and turns, the movie disappointingly forgoes such developments, perhaps to play safer to a wider, general audience, resulting in a bland experience. Director Doug Liman returns to the young-adult sci-fi adventure genre after Jumper, bringing along his frenetic and visceral style. The world is lived-in, with odd splashes
of colour (orange is plastered on weapons as well as clothing and architecture) and hints of a sinister past. Like Passengers, the movie would have been stronger, more effective, and better aligned with the main theme had the story been told from Viola’s perspective. All lead actors are serviceable, with Todd struggling in his attempts to break away from the toxic Mayor Prentiss (Mads Mikkelsen) while helping Viola. As it is, after a considerable set up of the world and the conflict, the movie chooses to soften its blow, which may prove fatal to future franchise potential. Verdict: A strong set-up with no follow through, leading to a muted story. 2 stars. Chaos Walking is showing at Dendy cinemas. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

What are prebiotics and do you need them? Gut health and the state of our microbiome – the collective of micro-organisms that our body hosts – are now firmly entrenched in the wellness lexicon. It’s for good reason, as we continue to discover more about how vital good gut flora is to our health. Some microorganisms are beneficial, whilst others are detrimental. We know we can support our beneficial microorganisms by eating certain foods which contain probiotics. It’s why we’ve consumed copious amounts of yoghurt over the years and now we’ve added kefir, sauerkraut and kimchi to the mix. Not to mention reclaiming kombucha from its hippy roots and appointing it as the official hipster
gut health beverage. Probiotics are created by the fermentation of foods. Chop up some cabbage, add salt and let it sit for 4-6 weeks and you’ve created your own live beneficial bacteria in the form of sauerkraut. As well as food sources, there are myriad forms of probiotic capsules and powders if you don’t fancy the food sources. Playing Robin to probiotics Batman, prebiotics have long been the quiet achiever on the gut health scene. Prebiotics are actually a type of non-digestible carbohydrate found in many foods that are able to pass through the stomach and small intestines undigested and arrive relatively unchanged in the large intestine where they become

food for the good bacteria living there. The good news is, it is relatively simple to incorporate prebiotic foods into your diet. Prebiotic compounds are found in chicory root, bananas, onion, garlic, watermelon, nectarines, white peaches, leek, asparagus, Jerusalem artichokes, snow peas and green peas as well as in many whole grains, legumes and seeds. The not so good news is that getting the balance right requires expert help as each of us has our own profile of helpful and harmful microorganisms, so it’s definitely not a one size fits all approach. If you’re healthy in body and mind, it’s highly likely that you have a favourable balance of
beneficial micro-organisms and you can just continue to eat well and have food sources high in probiotics and prebiotics. If, on the other hand, you have food intolerances, unwanted digestive symptoms like bloating, gas or pain, if you suffer from fatigue, skin irritations, autoimmune conditions, sleep disturbances, weight gain or mood disturbances, then it’s likely your gut health really needs some attention. Furniture in timber and metals Seek out furniture such as coffee tables and shelving with slender legs and simple lines in mixed materials such as weathered timber, brick, concrete, steel and copper.
Vintage dressing Scour your local second-hand shop for interesting salvaged items, such as metal dining chairs or lighting – and don’t worry about the odd nick and scratch as they’ll only add character.
Earth tones If you’re worried the industrial
look may appear a little cold, simply add layers of soft furnishings in natural textures and warm, earthy hues – think a beautifully aged tan leather sofa, cosy woollen cushions and throws, and a plush-pile rug underfoot – all in tones of chocolate, rust, olive and stony grey.
in the garden
A botanical extravaganza Meet Scott; with a professional background in ecology and geology, and currently completing a diploma in horticulture, his garden is anything but ordinary. Scott has lived in leafy green Fisher on a large block of approximately 800sqm since 2000. Gardening influences include his diverse and exceptional Australiancentric career and his mother’s passion for plants and gardening. The garden has been established over a number of years and without a formal design. Scott builds one garden bed at a time, a physical process of deep cultivation and gypsum to break up the compacted clay, and the addition of compost and forest litter from Canberra Sand and Gravel. The front yard has a protective tree layer including original plantings of exotic and native trees and large shrubs. This has enabled Scott to
create a sub-tropical rainforest theme with plant species not usually able to survive here. The front veranda is an extension of this unique microclimate with an enviable collection of potted Australian natives, such as a Kakadu bush plum and thriving specimens of rock orchids (Dendrobium kingianum). The understorey has a range of sub-tropical plants as well as cooltemperate performers such as net bush (Calothamnus), wattles (Acacia), tussock grass (Poa sieberiana), flax lily (Dianella) and kangaroo grass (Themeda triandra). There is also a thriving 10-year-old grass tree (Xanthorrhoea quadrangulata). The backyard is an intricate and themed collection of specialty plants, including but not limited to, an alpine herb garden; WA Eucalypts, Banksias, and king proteas; Tasmanian shade plants and sub-

tropical forest trees. There are also some ‘regular’ berry plants, herbs and veg. Most of the plants are potted so Scott can create the ideal growing environment for their specialised needs. It also gives him the ability to re-locate them as required. Scott makes his own Australian native mix with commercial mix, coarse river sand, powdered blue metal (inorganic release of micro-nutrients) and Osmocote controlled-release fertiliser for native plants. Scott waters mostly by hand, to keep an eye on plant health. The front garden is watered as needed using

a trickler irrigation system. He also plans on installing a dripper system for his potted plants. Possums are at times problematic visitors to the garden. Scott has overcome this by building several enclosures for vulnerable plants using recycled concrete blocks, metal piping and covering them with bird netting. Unsurprisingly, a diversity of desirable wildlife also frequents the garden, including birds, reptiles, native bees and other beneficial insects. Watering stations are located throughout the garden, including larger ones which have fish and yabbies in them to keep mosquito larvae at bay.

“The ideal buyer is more likely to be someone with a young family, an executive couple or someone downsizing from a very large home without compromising location, luxury and the gardening space,” she says. With plenty of room for family life, the home boasts four spacious bedrooms, the master with an ensuite and walk-in robe, a formal living room and open-plan kitchen,

living and dining. “This is a quality-built home with a huge open-plan family and dining overlooking the north-facing covered indoor outdoor entertaining area,” Selleck says. “The home is only six years old and offers superior family lifestyle with tremendous facilities for yearround entertaining and recreation.” Luxury features include stone benchtops, European appliances and double glazing, as well as ducted reverse-cycle heating and cooling, high ceilings and double garage with internal access. “Needless to say, the beautiful large kitchen with the walk-in-pantry would inspire any serious chef.

Award winning entertainer Garran 41 Couvreur Street This unique home in beautiful Garran presents the best of both worlds: a family home and a dream entertaining space. Built in 1976 and extended and renovated in 2008, the two-storey home boasts five bedrooms, myriad living options and views across to the Brindabellas and Red Hill. “This award-winning architectural designed home is the complete contemporary package,” says Ray White Canberra licensed agent, Nicky Symon. “The home is the perfect blend of an entertainer’s delight and spacious family home with great separation of space, and multiple outdoor and indoor living areas. “There’s an energy efficiency 48

and sustainable focus with 5.0 EER, double glazed windows throughout, and it’s well insulated.” The stylish main bedroom suite sits on the first floor, with its own ensuite, walk-in robe and balcony, while the remaining four bedrooms make up the ground floor alongside two bathrooms and a rumpus room which leads out onto the deck. The open-plan living space upstairs takes advantage of the home’s surrounds, with high ceilings and an abundance of natural light. “The living space is light filled with large picture windows, with a large verandah with views and retractable awning,” says Symon.
“There’s a contemporary kitchen with plenty of storage, stone bench space and six-burner gas stove.” Outside, enjoy the shaded deck, built-in pool and the established native gardens. “The house is positioned on a quiet and elevated loop street, close to excellent schools, local shops, parkland and public transport.”

property news
Weekly market wrap No respite for those looking to enter the property market 2021 has failed to provide any respite for those seeking to buy property. Persistently high preliminary auction clearance rates reported as 91.53% by CoreLogic and strong demand for off-plan properties have pushed up property values across Canberra. My observation is market participants are being repeatedly caught off guard by relying on historical sales data to determine expected sale prices for established properties. You too may have observed this if you have a family member or friend who has been bidding at auctions describe how the successful bidder paid too much. Which begs the question, did they? In some instances, it is difficult to find justification for sales results, however the successful buyers at auction may disagree with underbidders’ comments on the basis there was an underbidder and they could not have paid
less and secured the property. Canberra property values are in a robust growth cycle resulting in CoreLogic reporting unit values increased by 0.7% and house values by 2.2% in February, on top of increasing by 1% and 1.3% respectively in January. To put the market in perspective, consider a four-week auction campaign. A house with a value of $1 million advertised in early January would have increased in value 3.5% between initial advertising and settlement, assuming a sale under the hammer with a 30-day settlement. Buyers frustrated by lack of choice are comfortable paying higher prices as they perceive values will continue increasing in the short term, potentially pricing them out of the market. Conditions in the rental market are exceptional for investors as Canberra’s

SQM Research reported a vacancy rate of 0.8% in January with asking rents increasing by 6% for houses and 5.2% for units year-on-year for weeks ending 12 February. In the short term, this cohort of investor activity will plug any gaps left from expiry of the Federal Government Home Builder Scheme. For questions about steep purchases prices, the answer is: time. Property ownership is a long-term investment regardless of whether you buy for your own residence or as a dedicated investment. In my experience, far more people reflect with regret on properties they should have bought than the ones they did.

My favourite things MUM This is my dear Mum, who turns 90 this year. Like most other families, we hadn’t had the opportunity to catch up much, due to Covid, so when we all came together as a family at Christmas it was a really special day.
ABORIGINAL ARTWORK
Photo supplied
My favourite piece of Aboriginal artwork was painted by my neighbour during my two and a half years living and working Maningrida – Arnhem Land. A remarkable remote community that has left an indelible impression on me.

Damian Tuck
Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP) Head Coach
After a lifetime in the public service and a life-changing two-year stint in the remote community of Maningrida as a Remote Development Manager with AFLNT, Damian Tuck has returned to Canberra and taken on the role as the Indigenous Marathon Foundation’s Indigenous Marathon Project (IMP) Head Coach. Each year, the IMP recruit and train 12 young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women to run in the world’s biggest marathon – the New York City Marathon. This year, things will be done a bit differently, with the end goal being a marathon in the heart of Alice Springs. For Damian, he witnessed the effects of the program first-hand in Maningrida, with IMP Graduate #3 Juan Darwin, and he’s looking forward to working with a new squad of inspirational young leaders from across the country. (He’s also secretly hoping for another successful applicant from Maningrida!) - Cassandra Power
I’ve been passionately involved with football since I was five years old, due the strong positive influence of my father who was captain of the Collingwood Football Club way back in 1958-59. So many friends and experiences from our great game over many years. Go Pies!
WORK BAG This was a gift when I first started working in Canberra. It has been with me through my many different public service roles, some good and some bad, and it reflects the ups and downs of working life, but it has made it through!
FISHING Mountain biking and fishing take me to a quiet place, where I can enjoy the many amazing bike trails throughout Canberra and barra fishing trips up North!
