This week... “I am woman, hear me roar In numbers too big to ignore And I know too much to go back and pretend” As a tweenager in 1972, I remember hearing Helen Reddy’s feminist anthem, I am Woman, on repeat. The song was stirring, prompting me to ponder what was this pain from which wisdom is born and vowing “no one’s every gonna keep me down again” (especially not my “bossy” big brothers, which was my main concern as a tween). Fast forward to 2021, and the song and the issues – equal pay, choice, respect, safety – remain as pertinent as ever. Thousands attended the March 4 Justice in Canberra on Monday demanding not only to be heard, but for real change to power structures that limit women’s equal participation in life. If not now, when … Reasons to be grateful this past week include those pioneering women on whose shoulders female-identifying people stand today, an impromptu sunrise boat trip on Lake Burley Griffin to view the Canberra Balloon Spectacular from a different angle, scintillating live music at Musica Viva’s concert featuring the brilliant Diana Doherty (oboe) and Streeton Trio, thoughtprovoking art at aMBUSH Gallery’s new E.L.K. exhibition, and Black Fire Restaurant accommodating us so warmly as lastminute replacements at their delicious gin and tapas dining event on Sunday night. news What women want: March 4 Justice key messages When speakers took the stage at the Canberra March 4 Justice on Monday 15 March, a roughly 6,000-strong crowd of people of different ages, genders and cultural backgrounds listened to ideas about how to build a safer and more equitable society. Janine Hendry demanded systemic change from government, lawmakers and employers, and “measurable cultural and attitudinal change towards women and those without power”. “My equity does not diminish your equity,” she said. Wakka Wakka woman, academic and ACT Greens Senate candidate, Dr Tjanara Goreng Goreng, spoke up for First Nations women and called for “love, compassion, empathy and harmony”. “We ask you to do the work of changing systems without shaming or blaming, but with understanding, deep listening and respect.” Author, former refugee and notfor-profit CEO, Animata ContehBiger, emphasised the intersection of sexism and racism, which disproportionately marginalises women of colour. “If they don’t believe a white woman, what hope is there for black women?” she asked. “We need people to listen - we are not your property.” Former parliamentary staffer Brittany Higgins, whose allegation

of sexual assault against a colleague sparked protests around the country, said leaders on both sides of politics needed to stop avoiding the subject. “Together, we can bring about meaningful reform to the workplace culture inside Parliament House, and hopefully every workplace, to ensure the next generation of women can benefit from a safer and more equitable Australia.” ANU Students’ Association (ANUSA) president Madhumitha Janagaraja said she stood before the crowd “as a young disabled woman, as a woman of colour, as a survivor, and as a human being who’s angry”. “It is not just perpetrators that must be held to account, but the institutions that were meant to protect us that repeatedly and deliberately fail because they’re not designed to protect us, and nor have they intended to.” She said generations of Indigenous women, women of colour, trans women and disabled women were worst affected. “[The institutions] were never built for us, but it’s high time that

they change so that they are.” ACTU secretary Sally McManus called for reform in Parliament House, and in every Australian workplace. “We need changes to health and safety laws, that make sure employers have obligations to make sure workplaces are safe and treat the underlying cause of violence and harassment,” she said. Ms McManus called to legislate 10 days paid domestic and family violence leave. Canberra Women’s Liberation Group founding member, author Biff Ward, said the current uprising was something she never thought she would live to see. “Every wave does something profound that builds on what has come before,” she said. “It’s the law that needs to change now, and I think it’ll take 20 years – change doesn’t happen quickly.” The full line-up of speakers included survivors’ advocate Saxon Mullins, ANUSA women’s officer Avan Daruwalla, ANUSA education officer Maddie Chia, and more. - Rosa Ritchie

ACT switches on Australia’s largest community solar farm Australia’s largest community solar farm, SolarShare, switched on last week, Thursday 11 March, in the ACT. A total of 550 locals – students and seniors alike – raised more than $2.4 million for the threehectare farm, 5,000 solar modules built on a disused block owned by the Mount Majura vineyard. According to ACT Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction, Shane Rattenbury, the onemegawatt facility approaches the commercial scale, not seen in community projects before. The solar farm will produce enough power for 250 houses: 8

canberraweekly.com.au

1.8-gigawatt hour (GWh) of electricity each year; and abate 1,600 tonnes of carbon dioxide. Mr Rattenbury said the ACT Government will guarantee feedin tariffs for the next 20 years, which provides the solar farm with the economic foundation to invest and build the farm. Members invested between $500 and $100,000 each, and can expect a 5% return within 12 months, possibly by the end of the financial year. Nick Feyer, SolarShare chair, said investing in renewable energy was valuable, realistic, and socially creditable.

“The shift in transmission systems and generation systems is going to be the largest change in wealth since railroads came in,” he said. The financial risk is the weather; La Niña brings cooler weather and more rain, and fewer sunny days. But the economic modelling has been conservative, Mr Feyer reassured investors. “Even with cloudier days or La Niña events, we are still going to be able to beat our projected returns,” he said. SolarShare was formed by members of the grassroots sustainability organisation

SEE-Change. The solar farm was built by Epho Commercial Solar, using an $8,000 loan from CWP Renewables. The ACT Government sees SolarShare as a model for community ownership and community management of solar farms. Mr Rattenbury hoped community groups across the country would build similar farms. “We’ve now got a model that works, and there’s no reason why it can’t be replicated,” he said. “I’d like to think this is really just the first of this scale.” - Nick Fuller

news New charity house to deliver significant community benefit A new charity house project in Strathnairn is set to deliver significant community benefit while providing a platform to promote women in the construction sector. Designed, built and sold entirely by women, the proceeds from the sale of the house will be donated to Hands Across Canberra for distribution to three local charities: Pegasus Riding for the Disabled, Karinya House and Canberra City Care Charnwood. Ginninderry Joint Venture and Master Builders ACT (MBA) will collaborate on the design and construction of the premium home. Led by KANE Constructions, the materials and labour will be donated or provided at low cost by MBA members. Ginninderry training and employment manager, Emma Sckrabei, said that the project is “more than bricks and mortar”. “It’s about community; it’s about government and the private sector coming together to do things differently,” she said.

“You can’t be what you can’t see and we’re going to shine a light on the role of women in the construction industry … It will be a project that introduces a new generation of women to the construction industry and the traditional trades. It will be the project that creates opportunities and launches new careers.” MBA President, Graciete Ferreira, said charity house projects are a powerful way to bring the construction sector together to create significant community impact and show “the construction industry is a real option”. “This one was particularly special because it’s about women and it’s hopefully getting more women into the construction industry. This will give a bit more exposure to what sort of jobs women can do and they can show that you can build a whole house with women on every single facet of it,” she said. The sale of the house will be led by a “dream team” of female real estate agents and a female auctioneer will finalise the sale. According

Diane Bray, Graciete Ferreira and Emma Sckrabei have launched a new charity house project that will be designed, built and sold entirely by women. Image supplied.

to Ms Ferreira, the contribution of low-cost labour and material means more money will go to charity. Hands Across Canberra chief executive, Peter Gordon, said the impact on these charities, and the communities they serve, will be significant. “The selected charities provide an invaluable contribution to Canberra and the proceeds from the charity house auction will allow them to continue to grow their impact,” he said. “These are organisations that are making a genuine difference in our community.” Construction of the Ginninderry Charity House will commence soon with completion scheduled for late 2021. - Erin Cross

news Calls for federal government to get moving on Heart Foundation funding With Federal funding for Heart Foundation Walking groups set to expire in June, the national charity is calling for an investment of $9.5 million over three years to keep Australia’s largest free walking network striding forward. Cardiovascular disease affects 4 million Australians and accounts for nearly 30% of all deaths, which is one death every 12 minutes, according to Heart Foundation reports. Heart conditions are some of the most expensive health concerns to treat, consuming $10.4 billion of Australia’s annual healthcare budget. A whopping 85% of Australian adults are not meeting recommended physical activity levels of 150 minutes a week, missing an opportunity to reduce their risk of heart disease by up to 35%. Meanwhile, a Heart Foundation survey showed nine out of 10 walking group participants were getting the recommended amount of exercise. Provided funding is renewed, the Foundation aims to more than double program participation

from 80,000 to over 200,000 people. There are about 1,300 walking groups across the country, at least 30 of which are in Canberra and Queanbeyan. Fisher walk organiser, Judy McGurk, runs three walks a week for her retirement village, and has clocked up close to 800 strolls and marches since she became involved in the program over 12 years ago. “I think walking is important, because it gets people out, and we get the exercise. I think that’s very important,” she says. In 2020, Judy won the Heart Foundation Golden Shoe Award for the second time, one of four awards granted by the charity annually. The award recognises a “wellness warrior” for whom walking is key to their healthy lifestyle; Judy says she walks everywhere and only catches buses for long distances. A new member of Judy’s group, Stella, says joining the weekly walks has helped her recover

from knee surgery. “Being in a group is more incentive,” she says. “This is wonderful because it’s helping to get me going again.” Judy’s group sings her praises: she points out bumps in the path, introduces them to lovely walks around the area, carries water and first aid, and “even pushes sticks off the path!”. Heart Foundation CEO Adjunct Professor John Kelly says the Heart Foundation walking initiative is “low-cost, high-value”, it helps prevent heart disease and provides many other benefits along the way. The Federal Budget is due to be handed down in May. - Rosa Ritchie Find an extended version of this story and more photos online at canberraweekly.com.au

news ‘Hands Up 4 CBR’ Giving Day raises $640,000 Coe’s successor to be known soon Alistair Coe’s replacement in the ACT Legislative Assembly should be known by Thursday 25 March, the ACT Electoral Commissioner, Damian Cantwell AM, said on 15 March. Mr Coe’s resignation on Friday 12 March creates a ‘casual vacancy’, an empty seat in the Assembly outside the election period. The Assembly will fill the position by counting back through the ballot papers that elected Mr Coe in October. The seat could be filled by one of three unelected Yerrabi Liberal candidates: former MLA James Milligan (7.2% of the vote), Jacob Vadakkedathu (5.0%), or Dr Krishna Nadimpalli (3.6%). Those candidates have until noon on 25 March to contest the vacancy. At 12.30pm that day, the names of the candidates contesting the vacancy will be officially declared. A computer counting program will determine which candidate will be elected to replace Mr Coe. The result is expected to be officially declared on Friday 26 March 3pm.

The Canberra Day Appeal ‘Hands Up 4 CBR’ Giving Day has raised $640,000 for local charities and community organisations, surpassing its $500,000 goal on day one of the two-day appeal. Launched by Hands Across Canberra (HAC), the Giving Day is the region’s largest charitable fundraising appeal. The second year of Hands Up 4 CBR well surpassed the $130,000 raised in 2020, helping over 60 local charities and community organisations. HAC solely works with Canberra charities and community organisations, ensuring that the money they receive goes directly towards local people in need. Over the 48-hour period, more than 4,000 donations were received. One large donation was directly made to Raw Potential, on behalf of the Chappell Foundation for $75,000 and Canberra Data Centre for $25,000 at the kick-off event on Tuesday 9 March. Zango also made a $10,000 donation to the Leukemia

Foundation’s ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ which saw Peter Gordon shave his head at the event. Peter Gordon, CEO of Hands Across Canberra, says that he has been humbled by the community’s response since announcing the Canberra Day Appeal. - Erin Cross

news 14-year-old St Edmund’s dux begins a bachelor’s degree A gap year backpacking Europe was never on the cards for the 2020 dux of St Edmund’s College, 14-year-old Benjamin Francis, who began a bachelor’s degree earlier this month. “This trimester I’m doing applied physics, calculus, biology and chemistry,” he says. The ability to study online helped Benjamin work around requirements for tertiary students under the age of 17 to be accompanied by a parent on campus, and he wasn’t keen to wait two years to get cracking. “I’m very competitive, not just with other people but also with myself; I really want to do well at things. “So that’s sort of what keeps me driven, to keep studying and doing stuff.” Benjamin began extension activities halfway through primary school, although he remained in his assigned year group until grade six. After primary school he skipped to year nine, and then bypassed another grade to begin year 11 at 12 years of age.

Benjamin is the eldest of three siblings, all accelerated students, and his mother, Susan, was initially hesitant about him studying alongside teenagers up to five years his senior at a school best known for its excellence on the rugby field. But accelerated students are not uncommon at St Edmund’s, where school principal Joe Zavone began expanding the gifted and talented program four years ago. Mr Zavone tells his teachers not to expect accelerated students to get straight As, and they were supportive when some of Benjamin’s grades dipped at the beginning of year 11. Mrs Francis says it was a good experience for her son, who had previously “flown through everything”, to learn that lower grades were not a disaster. As a seven-year-old, Benjamin dreamed of becoming a real estate agent or a brain surgeon, but he settled on a new path after completing work experience in medical physics and

radiation engineering at Canberra Hospital. “Medical physics is sort of like this perfect match of all the stuff that I love – the very technical physics and maths related stuff as well as the helping people in medicine.” Benjamin found friends at St Edmund’s among people studying his favourite subjects, and his age was only an inconvenience when he was the only one without a driver’s licence. “Other than that, there wasn’t too much in terms of age that stopped us from being friends, really at all.” - Rosa Ritchie Find an extended version of this story online at canberraweekly.com.au

The Heritage Festival, cancelled last year, is set to go ahead on 6-26 April and promises to bring together a range of events that celebrate Canberra’s heritage and rich history. “What I’m really excited about after last year’s cancellation is that we have an event with over 160 events as part of the festival,” says festival coordinator Linda Roberts. “There’s just such a wonderful, varied program of activities.” The program includes tours, exhibitions, walks and workshops, with a few quirky events thrown in, too, like the Heritage Polaris – a seven-hour biking and navigating event.

Reimagining ‘reimagine’ While this year’s theme was intended to be for the 2020 festival, it works perfectly for an event that’s had to do a little ‘reimagining’ of its own. “We’ve had to reimagine ‘reimagine’,” Ms Roberts says. “This year we don’t have some of the really massive open days of the past.” While it’s hoped those events will return for future years, this year has presented an opportunity for more intimate and boutique events where people can participate in smaller groups and experience things more closely. “We’ve got a lot of what I would class as ‘around the corner’ [events]; things in the suburbs. “People found respite during lockdown and rediscovered what

[their suburbs] had to offer. “One of the loveliest things I hear is ‘I’ve lived here all my life and I never knew that’ or ‘I’ve never been here’.” As is the nature of ‘COVID times’, there will also be a number of online ‘heritage at home’ events including talks and virtual tours. Reimagined, too, is the merch from last year’s canned event – “we did have bags printed [last year], but it was too difficult to print over the date so on the reverse side we’ve actually put another artwork there”.

Canberra’s rich heritage “Heritage is what we have from the past and I think we need to know where we’ve been in order to move forward and I think that’s really important,” Ms Roberts says.

“It’s a dialogue really between the present and the past, what we currently have.” It doesn’t just relate to what we consider to be ‘really old’, either. This year, the Canberra suburb of Swinger Hill will be on show as an example of 1970s architecture and mediumdensity living. Ms Roberts says heritage also includes natural heritage and Canberra’s Aboriginal heritage, as well as intangible heritage like skills and crafts that will be on show during the festival. “If we understand our past and there’s community spirit and there’s a pride in where we come from … heritage is very much at the cornerstone of that.”

Local talent on show One particular set of skills that

will be on show are those of local artist Hannah Minter, who created the artwork for the festival inspired by the ‘reimagine’ theme. “Coming in with that ‘pop art’ artwork, that resonates really well with when Canberra just really grew during the ‘60s and ‘70s; there was a real braveness in the planning and the architecture,” Ms Roberts says. “Her artwork, it’s quite striking … we’re just really excited to have her on board and to support a local artist.” Read more about Hannah and her artwork on page 46. New demountables at Majura New Hivve sustainable transportable classrooms (demountables) have been installed at Majura Primary School as part of the ACT Government’s plan to transition public schools to a net zero emissions future. ACT Minister for Education and Youth Affairs, Yvette Berry, inspected the demountables on Monday morning. Ms Berry said the demountables are fully insulated and meet current energy targets. They are prefabricated and modular to reduce construction waste. They integrate sustainable building materials, including recycled glass insulation, Australian manufactured insulated wall and floor panels,

Australian manufactured composite decking made from recycled plastic and waste timber product, and double-glazed windows. According to Ms Berry, the classrooms offer all the same comforts and technical/ IT infrastructure as a permanent learning space. They can be powered entirely by rooftop solar and a battery energy storage system; excess energy offsets the school’s energy use. An energy dashboard provides real-time data on the building’s energy and indoor air quality data, allowing students and staff to learn how building use connects with building performance.

ACT’s first public crematorium opens in Gungahlin The ACT’s first publicly owned crematorium officially opened at Gungahlin Cemetery on Monday 15 March, attended by members of Canberra’s Indian community. Canberra’s Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists have long wanted a crematorium; these faiths require or prefer the body to be consumed by fire, believing cremation releases the soul swiftly and keeps the Earth clean. However, a 2018 review of the Cemeteries and Crematoria Act 2003 found that ACT funeral services did not meet the needs of 11% of Canberrans with a religious or cultural

need for cremation, according to ACT Minister for City Services, Chris Steel. The ACT, expected to reach 500,000 people by 2030, needs three or four crematoria; but to date Canberra’s only crematorium has been privatelyowned Norwood Park. The Gungahlin crematorium was completed in December. Since it opened in February, 10 people have been cremated. Another publicly-owned crematorium will be built as part of Southern Memorial Park proposed to be constructed on Canberra’s southside.

Public charity bins at RMCs A year after the ACT Government withdrew charity bins from public places, Canberrans will soon be able to drop off clothing and textiles at Mugga Lane and Mitchell Resource Management Centres (RMC). A sixmonth trial of collection points will begin in May. “Canberrans love recycling, and we want to provide opportunities for people to reuse and recycle textile items like clothing and shoes,” said ACT Minister for Transport and City Services, Chris Steel. Illegal dumping significantly increased in the height of the

pandemic; in response, the government removed charity bins from shopping centres and car parks last April. The public will be able to drop off clothing, textiles and shoes for free. The sites will be locked at night and monitored by CCTV cameras. People caught illegally dumping waste at a recycling drop-off centre can be fined up to $1,500 for individuals, or $7,500 for businesses. Raiders win season opener

The Brumbies 2021 unbeaten run has come to an end in an absolute thriller, going down 40-38 to the Queensland Reds at GIO Stadium Canberra on Saturday night, 13 March. The home side led for much of the night, until a Reds try in the dying minutes secured victory and top spot on the Super Rugby AU ladder for the visitors. The Brumbies got off to a fast start, scoring two tries and a penalty goal to lead 17-0 after 14 minutes. The Reds hit back, though, and managed to claw their way back into the game to trail just 24-16 at half time. The second half started positively for the Brumbies as they scored the first try before disaster struck. Already without front rowers Allan Alaalatoa and James Slipper, the Brumbies prop stocks were mighty thin after injuries to Tom Ross and Scott Sio and the Reds took full advantage.

Brumbies fall to Reds

Folau Faingaa of the Brumbies scores a try against the Reds at GIO Stadium on 13 March.

They dominated the scrum and scored two quick tries to make it 3130 with 10 minutes to play. A converted try to Issak FineLeleiwasa gave the Brumbies an 8-point lead, but a quick penalty goal brought the Reds back within striking distance. Then a brilliant try from Jordan Petaia right next to the goal posts secured the Reds’ comeback win. The Brumbies have a timely bye round this week, giving them extra time to lick their wounds. Their next match is against the Western Force in Canberra on Friday 26 March.

A Jordan Rapana double and a strong second half performance by the Canberra Raiders helped them to a 30-12 victory over the Wests Tigers at GIO Stadium Canberra on Sunday afternoon, 14 March. Locked at 6-6 at half time, the Raiders scored four second half tries to get their season off to the perfect start. Rapana scored his first try just before half time to level the scores before Ryan James produced the moment of the match right after the break.

Playing his first NRL game in 693 days, James barged his way over from close range to give the Raiders a 12-6 lead. Hudson Young and Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad added a try each before the Tigers hit back to make it 24-12. Rapana put the finishing touches on the victory after getting on the end of some Joe Tapine brilliance to score his second and seal the win. The Raiders next play the Cronulla Sharks at Nestrata Jubilee Stadium on Sunday 21 March 6.15pm.

Heyman breaks record A W-League record-breaking performance from Michelle Heyman was the highlight of a thrilling clash between Canberra United and Perth Glory, which saw the home side win 3-2 at Viking Park in Canberra on Friday 12 March. An injury time winner capped

off a chaotic final few minutes as the legendary Heyman went two goals clear at the top of the Westfield W-League all-time goalscoring charts. Canberra United will face Newcastle Jets in Newcastle on Saturday 20 March 6.35pm.

Marvellous mushrooms Autumn is officially underway and this week food writer Libby Kimber is celebrating with an ode to the marvellous mushroom.

Baked polenta tart with sautéed mushrooms Serves 4 Polenta tart base 1 Tbsp unsalted butter for cooking 1 garlic clove, minced 1 cup coarse polenta 500ml vegetable or chicken stock 1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese 2 tsp fresh thyme leaves 1 1/2 tsp rosemary leaves Cracked pepper to taste Sea salt to taste Tart toppings 1 red onion thinly sliced into half moons 1 Tbsp brown sugar 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar 150g (1 bunch) English spinach, rinsed, ripped into smaller pieces 150g Swiss brown mushrooms, thinly sliced 100g button mushrooms, thinly sliced 1 tsp fresh thyme leaves 100g marinated goats cheese Unsalted butter for cooking Sea salt to taste To serve Parsley, roughly chopped

Preheat the oven to 180oC. Lightly grease a 35cm pie tin and set aside. Warm up a heavy base medium saucepan to medium heat, add a knob of butter. Once the butter has melted, add the minced garlic and sauté until it turns a light golden colour. Add the polenta and stir thoroughly to coat in butter. 34

canberraweekly.com.au

Gradually pour in the stock while continually stirring to prevent lumps forming. Once the polenta thickens and the grains soften, add the grated parmesan cheese, fresh herbs, pinch of salt and a good amount of cracked pepper.

Streaky bacon and mushroom carbonara

Remove from the heat and turn the polenta out into the pie tin. Using a spatula, level out the polenta and allow for a nice thick side crust (the pie crust is meant to be thicker than a traditional pastry crust). Trim off any excess.

Serves 4

Place the tart casing in the oven to cook for 25-30 minutes or until it becomes crispy and a darker golden colour.

300g Swiss brown mushrooms, sliced or quartered

To cook the caramelised onion, add a knob of butter to a heavy base frying pan. Add the thinly sliced red onion and allow to sweat down, stirring until the onions become translucent and soft.

300ml Bulla cooking cream

Add the brown sugar and balsamic vinegar and stir through. Cook for a further 5 minutes while the sugar dissolves and the balsamic vinegar caramelises. Remove from the heat and set aside.

1/2 cup parsley leaves, chopped

In the same fry pan on medium heat add a small knob of butter and the English spinach. Sauté until it becomes soft and wilted, remove from the heat and set aside. Using the same fry pan, add a knob of butter followed by the sliced mushrooms and the thyme. Sauté until the mushrooms become tender and juicy. Remove from the heat and set aside. To fill the tart, spread out the caramelised onion across the base. Follow with the wilted spinach and top with the sautéed mushrooms. Finish off with spoonfuls of marinated goat’s cheese, a drizzle of the oil from the cheese and a sprinkle of fresh parsley over the top. Serve warm straight away.

1 Tbsp olive oil 4 rashers streaky bacon, chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 700g fettucine pasta 1/2 cup chicken stock or water 1/2 cup parmesan, grated To serve Grated parmesan Bring a large saucepan of water to the boil. Meanwhile, heat half the oil in a frying pan, add bacon and cook until golden and crisp. Set aside and wipe out pan. Add remaining oil to pan with the mushrooms, cooking until golden. Return bacon to the pan with the garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add pasta to boiling water and return to the boil, cooking until al dente. Drain. Pour the Bulla Cooking Cream and stock into the mushrooms with the parmesan cheese, mixing well and bring to a simmer. Season to taste and toss in the cooked pasta and parsley. Serve sprinkled with additional parmesan if desired.

Margaret Fulton musical to sing for its supper at The Q A musical theatre production chronicling the fascinating life and times of one of modern Australia’s most influential cooks, Margaret Fulton, will take the cake when it comes to The Q later this month. Having debuted their production earlier this month, Margaret Fulton the Musical producer Alli Pope told Canberra Weekly the work had been on her radar since first seeing the script in 2018. “I wasn’t entirely convinced at the beginning because I wondered how exciting a musical could be about a cook,” she said. “Then I read the script and I was blown away. She was so interesting and had such a full life.” The delightful musical follows Fulton’s journey from humble beginnings in her Scottish immigrant family to celebrity cook superstardom. 36

The production features a cast of six and comes to Queanbeyan on 23-27 March near the beginning of an 83-performance regional tour covering most of Australia. Twentieth century Australian home cooking can be defined by a pre-Fulton and post-Fulton era, both either side of the 1969 release of the seminal Margaret Fulton Cookbook. The book featured Fulton’s burnt orange crockpots and chunky stoneware serving dishes and encouraged housewives to try their hand at nasi goreng and apricot chicken. “She’s the woman who taught Australians how to cook,” Pope said. In 2021, Australia is a culinary melting pot where many of us happily sample and enjoy exotic foods from right across the world. But 52 years ago, that wasn’t so, and, in that respect, Fulton blazed the trail; prior to her

book Australian home cooking revolved almost entirely around the classic meat and three veg. “She brought something different and encouraged people to try new ingredients,” Pope said. “Before that people didn’t even think outside that box.” The production’s set and costumes lend itself to Fulton’s cooking and home lives and leans into a late 1960s/early 1970s Australian aesthetic. Fulton’s kitchen and living area occupies each side of the stage, and the set is adorned with pink paisley wallpapers, pale blue panelling and kitschy cookware. “It’s a really bright, colourful show with lots going on,” Pope said. “You could imagine she’s in the kitchen doing a demo and then breaks into full song about a pressure cooker.” The creative pedigree of the musical’s creators is nearly as impressive as Fulton’s own work. Writer Doug MacLeod has worked on Fast Forward, Full Frontal, Kath and Kim and The Micallef Program, and brings the quirky, clever sensibility of those works to Margaret Fulton. Similarly, composer Yuri Worontschak has worked across theatre, screen and studio music; with some credits including Eric Bana feature film Love the Beast, Mad as Hell, and Kath and Kim too. “All the songs are quite different, so it makes for a really interesting 80 minutes,” Pope said. Both Macleod and Worontschak started whipping up Margaret Fulton the Musical in 2005. Although she passed in 2019 aged 94, Ms Fulton saw an early version of the musical in 2012 when it was in workshop stage. “At least she got to see her life on stage, which thrilled her; I heard she was absolutely thrilled by that,” Pope said. ‘Wishlist’ musical Fangirls to grace The Playhouse Having been on the Canberra Theatre’s wishlist since it debuted in 2019, dreams will come true later this month when hit Australian musical Fangirls graces The Playhouse boards. Part concert part musical, Fangirls follows 14-year-old Edna (Karis Oka), who is head over heels infatuated with boyband superstar Harry. Created and written by Yve Blake with direction by Paige Rattray, Fangirls premiered in 2019 with a sell-out season. Both new members of the cast for the 2021 tour, Oka and onstage swing, Tomáš Kantor, spoke to Canberra Weekly directly after a matinee show for school kids during their Adelaide Festival run. Kantor said he loves performing for audiences aged similarly to the characters depicted in Fangirls. “I think Fangirls beautifully captures the age of these characters, between 12 and 16,” he said. “When we have a school audience coming, they respond to seeing themselves authentically

depicted on stage.” This marks Kantor’s professional on-stage debut. He joined the cast as an onstage swing, which sees him understudy a few lead roles and perform on the ensemble track. “It’s such an amazing space to enter the industry because I really care about young Australian storytelling,” he said. “It’s so inclusive and sets the bar so high for me.” In Fangirls’ initial 2019 run, creator Yve Blake played the lead role of Edna. Oka took over for the 2021 season at Sydney’s Seymour Centre and the subsequent national tour. She said stepping into the shoes previously filled by the work’s creator was at once both daunting and exciting. “It is a scary thing,” she said. “I was totally scared coming into it. “From the get-go, Yve was reaching out to me and supporting me and very much giving me

permission to not follow in her footsteps and make the role my own.” Having spent some time in the role, Oka said she’s still learning more about Edna, a role semibased on Blake, with each performance. “The character is easy for anyone to identify with because it’s just a teenager who loves something,” she said. “So, anyone could be Edna if you loved something hard enough, and I think that has been the anchor into the character.” Fangirls comes to Canberra Theatre Centre, 24-28 March; canberratheatrecentre.com.au - Denholm Samaras

A ‘settler-colonial view’ of 19th century Australia An exhibition giving insight into what the artists of the day thought important to capture in presenting Australia to the world 135 years ago is now showing at the National Library of Australia. A Nation Imagined: The Artists of the Picturesque Atlas, which opened 12 March, showcases original drawings and paintings from The Picturesque Atlas of Australasia, a landmark journal published in 40 supplements between 1886 and 1889. The project saw artists travel across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands, producing

over 800 sketches on the spot. From there, many of the sketches were transposed onto wooden blocks via a timeconsuming engraving process so they could be reproduced en masse for the Atlas. Over 180 drawings, prints and paintings, as well as original engraving tools, are on display. Co-curators Natalie Wilson and Dr Gary Werskey told Canberra Weekly the Atlas documented a settler-colonial view of Australian and served as a catalyst for Australian Impressionism. “It told a story of how settler-colonial Australians saw the history of Australia, its achievements, and where it was going,” Werskey said. The version of Australia depicted was one determined by white male settlers, with women mostly absent and no portrayals of Indigenous Australians. “The blinkers were on,” Werskey said. However, two female artists, Constance Roth and Ellis Rowan, were employed to create art for the Atlas. Both Wilson and Werskey worked tirelessly over

eight years to produce A Nation Imagined. Wilson, an Art Gallery of New South Wales curator, said the exhibition was presented and produced in partnership between the Gallery and the Library. “The Library has three of the most pristine copies of The Picturesque Atlas that we’ve seen in Australia, with all the original supplements,” she said. “And don’t forget, The Picturesque Atlas is a book, so where else would you hold an exhibition on it but the National Library.” The exhibition showcases the art of three of the Atlas’s artists – Julian Ashton, A. Henry Fullwood and Frank Mahony – and features works of other contributors. Much of the art displayed hasn’t been seen in public in over 100 years, with many pieces privately owned. Judas and the Black Messiah (MA15+) In Chicago during the late 1960s, 17-year-old petty criminal William ‘Bill’ O’Neal (Lakeith Stanfield) impersonates an FBI agent to steal a car. Once he is arrested, he is approached by real FBI Special Agent Roy Mitchell (Jesse Plemons), who offers O’Neal a choice: he can be imprisoned for his crimes or go undercover for the Bureau by infiltrating the Illinois chapter of the Black Panther Party and work to dethrone its leader, Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya). In his second feature, Shaka King focuses on a story of racism and manipulation from the government to destabilise a political organisation under the pretence of protecting its country. While Netflix’s The Trial of the Chicago 7 shares similar subject matter and the Hampton character, Black Messiah is more of a thriller. Like The Departed, O’Neal suffers psychologically under the weight of his role in directly destabilising the Black Panther Party not

only for his freedom, but financial gain. Hampton is a charismatic new leader with flourishes of extremism in his poetry-like speeches that is enough for the FBI led by John Edgar Hoover (Martin Sheen) to plan the upcoming Messiah’s downfall. Mitchell is initially adamant that he is putting a stop to a group with the destructive potential of the Klu Klux Klan, until Hoover’s ulterior motive is revealed. Verdict: A disturbing real-life story that is unfortunately still relevant today. 3 stars. Judas and the Black Messiah is screening at Dendy cinemas. - Luke McWilliams | themovieclub.net

Alliance Française advertising moment

French Film Festival invites you on ‘a journey’ Offering a glorious respite from the challenges facing the world, the Alliance Française French Film Festival 2021 is an invitation to take “a journey to France” as it celebrates love and strong women. Having begun in early March and running to Sunday 4 April for its luminous 32nd season, the Festival’s 37-film program offers cinephiles a breath of fresh air through a joyous celebration of French culture. Since the festival commenced on 4 March, the program has been well received by Canberrans, with a number of screenings selling out. With the 2021 festival being the first for Karine Mauris as artistic director, she said it was a “big challenge” for her to select the 37-film program. “The way I was thinking was that for the moment I would like to propose ‘a journey to France’, because I know it’s impossible to travel right now,” she said.

Featuring a rich array of genres and even countries of origin – with films also produced in Tunisia, Syria, Canada and Belgium – the program sets out “to show France as she is now, in all her diversity”. Another multicultural film in the program depicting modern France’s diversity is Canadian/French biopic, Aline. Inspired by the extraordinary life of globally renowned Quebecker singing sensation Céline Dion, Aline tells the story of a 1980s teenager who, coming from humble beginnings, sees her powerful voice propel her onto the world stage to become an international pop sensation. The movie covers Dion’s music, her life to date, and her love for her recently deceased husband; and is a celebration of French language, French music and strong women. “When we present a French movie, it’s not always about romance

One of 37 films to screen during the Alliance Française French Film Festival, Eiffel is an enchanting tale about one of France’s most iconic structures.

and love,” Ms Mauris said. “I love to take people and bring them to places they’ve never gone before. It’s to give your emotions a journey and to surprise you, too. I want people to see something different also.” Opening night of the festival featured a world premiere of the highly anticipated Eiffel, an inspiring, captivating tale about one of France’s most iconic structures, centred on the love story between engineer Gustav Eiffel and a woman from his past, Adrienne Bourgès. Scheduled to premiere in France in May, Eiffel was made over four years and is set amidst the backdrop of the famous tower’s conception and construction during Paris’s Belle Époque ahead of the 1900 World Fair. Alongside the opening night world premiere of Eiffel, the festival has premiered eight other films. “It’s not often we have a world premiere, but because of Covid they have been postponed in France,” Ms Mauris said. “Also, because of the Australian public, filmmakers know that if their movie works in Australia, it will work in the rest of the world.”

French cinema has long been revered, having influenced generations of filmmakers across the world. Known for their distinct form of storytelling, uniquely-drawn characters and use of obscure filmmaking techniques, Ms Mauris said French cinema stands out from the rest. “They give us positivity and discover something new. Compared to blockbuster American movies, our characters are not superheroes, they are more magnificent losers,” she said. “They are so different than what we see in the blockbusters; they lie, they are sometimes not beautiful, but the French people love them, and they present them with so much tenderness and no judgement, and I love that.” With the 2021 festival being the 32nd in Australia, Ms Mauris said French cinema has long resonated with Australian audiences. “I know that Australians love France, they love romance and are also very interested in the lifestyle in France, the joie de vivre,” she said. The Alliance Française French Film Festival 2021 is on now at Palace Electric Cinema, New Acton, until 4 April; affrenchfilmfestival.org

Hannah Minter is the self-taught Canberra artist behind Mint Illustrations. A lifelong Canberran, Hannah created the retro-inspired artwork for the ACT Heritage Festival with the theme ‘reimagine’. The 2020 Heritage Festival was postponed due to COVID-19 and will take place this year on 6-26 April. This interview originally appeared in our 26 March 202 edition.

1

What was the inspiration for your Heritage Festival pieces? I’ve always been attracted to all things retro. One of the main inspirations behind my work is capturing all the gorgeous retro themes of the past and transforming them through a female gaze. My pieces for the ACT Heritage Festival also took on the theme ‘reimagine’ – taking iconic symbols of Canberra’s past and reimagining them into the future. Local illustrator Hannah Minter created the artwork for the Heritage Festival, celebrating the theme ‘reimagine’. Photo supplied.

2

What subject matter have you highlighted in your works, and why? Growing up in Canberra, there are certain places and sites that I feel especially fond of. Some of the places featured in these artworks include the very retro and iconic Starlight drive-in sign and our picturesque Lake Burley Griffin. I’ve also included things that Canberrans know

very well, such as hot air balloons, magpies, Bogong months, the Canberra Carousel and the recent addition of our light rail.

3

What does it mean to you to have your work as part of the Heritage Festival? Very rarely does a project come along that seems almost too good to be true! That was the case when I was invited to create art for the ACT Heritage Festival. It was an absolute delight, pairing my retro feminine art with all the things I love about Canberra.

4

How do your illustrations come together, from concept to the finished product? Most of my work is created digitally. I spent years creating art with paint and pencil, but I have recently fallen in love with the convenience and accessibility of

digital art. You can often find me drawing at a café in Braddon.

5

How did you discover the world of illustration and develop your skills? For as long as I can remember I’ve always drawn and painted in my personal time, but up until recently, I never thought to turn it into a business ... A dear friend took me along to an illustration workshop with the very talented Canberra illustrator Juliette Dudley [juliettedudley.com]. Hearing Juliette talk about her Canberra Illustration business filled me with inspiration, so I decided to give it a go. I threw my hat in the ring, and Mint Illustrations was born. Need to restart or reset? 2021 is very much underway and, hopefully, so are you with smashing your goals! If you decided that this was going to be the year to focus on your health and fitness, but haven’t started off the way you wanted to, don’t sweat it! Things happen; family matters, injuries, work demands, travel, so this week we’ll look at some tips and tools to reset and restart. This week, I had to restart my 2021 goals, too, due to some back surgery for injuries that were causing me too much pain and restricting my everyday life. The great thing about resetting and restarting is it gives you a little bit of extra time to plan the ‘how, what, when, where and why’ and really focus on the desired outcome of your exercise journey. Setting your goals • Review your goals list: if you

need to update or modify any goals, now is the perfect time to do it – make them obtainable! Start with small goals. Stick to your plan and review weekly – this will help you keep sight of your goals. Respect yourself and don’t be too hard on yourself. Time is your friend, use it well. If you’re coming back from injury, let your body recover and repair. Stage your training: don’t rush to try to fit in all the training you’ve missed, this could do more harm than good! Overtraining does not work.

stretching for three days. Stay hydrated. Only increase your workout effort and duration if there is no pain. Start training with your body weight only to get your whole body switched on. Implement some training in water to help support your body. After a week, reassess your fitness goals to see if they will still work for you.

Workouts Workout 1 Look at doing two 30-minute sessions to break this one up. • Take a walk at a brisk, comfortable speed for around 30 minutes. • Continuing your brisk pace, introduce some hills.

Hitting restart Make sure your body and mind are both ready for you to hit the reset button on your exercise goals! • Start off with walking and

Workout 2 This one is all about stretching out and working your legs and lower back. • 1 min controlled lower back rolls • 3 x 1 min hip raises • 15 x squats • 30 secs – 1 min plank • 15 x elbow sit-ups • 15 x standing calf raises, each leg If you can, finish this workout with a 15-20 min walk or jog.

Bring autumn into your home As the weather cools down, it’s time to bring some warmth into your home. Use sun-baked neutrals to warm the soul or style an earthy palette with natural finishes to bring the outside in. WITH HOME EDITOR, ERIN CROSS

Top 5 tips for bringing autumn in Not sure where to start? Dulux shares their top five tips to help you style your space and bring autumn inspiration into reality. • •

• • •

Texture time: Style an earthy palette with raw textures and natural finishes. Choose the right white: Cool whites, such as Dulux White Exchange Half, work best in open-plan rooms with plenty of natural light. Warm whites suit smaller and more traditional rooms. Consider the view: When you’re layering tonal colours like this, step back and view the room as a whole before deciding what to apply where. Add one or two statement pieces in richer hues: This grounds your palette and creates a sense of balance. Avoid clutter: To keep the look calm and open, leave plenty of breathing space around furniture and décor items (this also helps show off their beautiful shapes).

The Honeysmith Kurt, a self-confessed bee enthusiast, has been beekeeping for the past five years and running local business The Honeysmith for 3.5 years, which he established through crowdfunding. Currently Kurt keeps hives at several locations in the Canberra area including the ANU grounds at Stromlo, a large residential property in Fraser, and farmland in Jerrabomberra. He also provides a number of other services including, but not limited to, building and supplying hives, hive hosting, swarm collection, and running beekeeping courses at Strathnairn Arts precinct. Kurt is an advocate for sustainable beekeeping, a practice which includes not overworking the hives, not harvesting everything, regularly checking the hives and maintaining hive health, and ensuring minimal impact on native flora and fauna. According to Kurt, last spring was a winner for bees and honey production, largely because of the proliferation of Capeweed and Paterson’s curse. Interestingly, the past few months have been lean as many plants appear to have favoured leaf growth rather than flowering due to the high rainfall and mild temperatures. Kurt lives on a large suburban block in Fisher with his family. He grows a wide range of plants, both native and exotic, and with varied flowering times to cover all seasons. They have been specially selected to suit Canberra’s challenging hot (and usually) dry summers, cold winters, and for their attractiveness to honeybees, native beneficial insects and other wildlife. Kurt only waters any new plantings until they are established. He finds planting

groups of plants together makes it easier for bees and other pollinators to forage. Some of Kurt’s favourite plants for pollinators include Grevilleas with their extended flowering season and excellent drought tolerance, tea trees (Leptospermum), Eucalypts, Correas, Abelias, rosemary, lavender, thyme, borage, Agastache and cornflowers. Interesting bee titbits: • Bees need a good supply of pollen for proteins and fats, and nectar for carbohydrates and sugar. • They also require adequate food storage to get them through the cold winter months when they have to work a lot harder to maintain their hives at the nominal 34 oC. • Generally, bees don’t forage unless the air temperature is

13 oC or more. Similarly, bees struggle to forage in hot, wet or windy weather. • Bees appreciate a variety of pollen and nectar from a diversity of flowers. Pollen and nectar sources aren’t created equal either, with some being richer sources than others. • Planting blocks of the same flower colour and type makes it easier for pollinators to find and more efficient for them to forage from.

• Bees need a reliable and clean water source filled with pebbles for their safety. • If you find a swarm of bees in your garden – keep your distance, secure your pets and contact a beekeeper. The Honeysmith honey can be purchased online or at the National Arboretum Curatorium, Chifley Grocer, The Markets Wanniassa, and Boss Rural at Tharwa. For more: the-honeysmith.com.au

A unique sanctuary Watson 41 Piddington Street This private, mid-century modern home is surrounded by lush gardens making it a true sanctuary in the Inner North suburb of Watson. Known as the ‘Kangaroo House’ due to the patterned stone decal at the entrance, current owners Joan and Hal say 41 Piddington Street is a well-known local landmark with appealing design elements like the slate feature walls, timber floors, pressed metal surfaces and the use of colour. “The spacious home has been host to many parties and community events in recent years and never fails to delight visitors with its special character and warmth.” The home’s versatile floor plan 58

canberraweekly.com.au

has been designed with different zones for relaxation, work and play. It includes a private bedroom, study and ensuite with private entrance from the deck – making it suitable for a range of uses. “The open plan living area with inviting open fireplace flows onto a massive north-facing deck with large covered entertaining area.” The lush surrounds are home to extensive vegetable gardens, a chicken run and plenty of space for entertaining. The gardens yield produce like olives, apples, pears and plums and have been landscaped to keep the home cool in summer and let in the sun during winter, based on sustainable permaculture design principles. Tucked away amongst the trees is a self-contained one-

bedroom studio. “To complete the package there’s 4 kilowatts of solar panels eliminating electricity bills.” Joan and Hal say the home is the perfect fit for those who value nature, space and privacy, and are looking for a tranquil escape on the doorstep of the City. The home is also close to Dickson, EPIC for the farmer’s markets and the light rail. “This beautiful property is on one of Watson’s prettiest streets, lined with Chinese elms and backing reserve, with many native birds regularly frequenting the extensive gardens. “It is a short walk to the

popular Knox Cafe and Watson Shops for all your daily needs.” They say Watson has a “fabulous community feel”, having been actively engaged with the local community association.

property news

canberraweeklyrealestate.com.au R E A L E S TAT E

Weekly market wrap Buyer fatigue and adjusting expectations Fatigue has become evident across the market as competitive conditions ratchet up pressure on those who wish to purchase properties. A typically exciting event has turned into a rapid conditioning process in adjusting expectations to meet market conditions. This results in selecting the most palatable compromise, which could include a refocus on a property search in different areas, adjusting expectations about features that are ‘needs’ rather than ‘wants’, increasing budgets or a combination of all. A challenge for wouldbe purchasers is the value of their dollar rapidly depreciating in line with rising prices. Low stock levels across the established market are driving incredibly strong preliminary auction clearance rates. CoreLogic reported on Saturday 13 March, Canberra achieved a preliminary auction clearance rate of 95% from 80 reported results. Robust competition among bidders at auctions has caused suburb records to tumble across Canberra.

WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST

Some of these records are being broken by new builds of an exceptionally high standard, however, there are many instances where the suburb records are broken by well-maintained older homes. First home buyers are finding market conditions challenging, especially when competing against investors and upgraders with equity in other assets, who can pay aggressive prices. I believe one solution for buyers finding the established market too challenging is to adjust their criteria and consider off-plan properties.

Purchasing off the plan Off-plan properties need to be sold at ‘wholesale’ prices to deliver sales volume within short timeframes for developers to commence construction. Finance is not required until settlement, which can take 12-24-plus months, providing time for purchasers to keep saving to increase their deposits. The overall benefit in a rising market is the ability to ‘lock in’ a purchase price at today’s value and participate in a robust growth cycle of increasing property values,

without the burden of having to pay any holding costs. A common misconception among off-plan buyers is by continuing to rent during the construction phase, they are paying someone else’s mortgage. Whilst this perspective is understandable, it fails to take into account the no holding costs in relation to their off-plan purchase. Being able to participate in the market by paying as little as 5% deposit with no ongoing holding costs until the property is built and ready for settlement is, I believe, very undervalued as a strategy to get into the property market. Taking advantage of government incentives, including stamp duty concessions, can help buyers own properties more suitable to their long-term requirements, should they be open to waiting a little longer. Editor’s note: Sam Dodimead is the listing agent for a number of developments where off-plan purchases can be made.

in the stars ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

There will be an extra intensity to all your communications this week, so it’s ideal for saying what you mean. You will have some great ideas, so don’t keep them all to yourself, as everyone will be interested in hearing what you have to say.

You are in a secretive mood at the moment, so do your best to reassure others that this is just a phase you need to go through to sort yourself out. It’s not that you are being antisocial, but you will do your best work away from distractions.

This is a good time to proceed with projects that challenge you and allow you to experiment with your creative skills. Long distance travel could also be on the agenda, which you’ll find exciting. You could make some new social contacts, especially with foreigners or people who are slightly unusual.

Undoubtedly a lot of energy is going to be needed to tackle the tasks ahead of you. However, be careful of taking on more than you can handle, otherwise you will only wear yourself out. Mars highlights action and as it squares the Sun and Mercury, tempers can flare.

Your thoughts are very structured and sensible this week, which is great if you are going to be doing some forward planning about your property or retirement plans. Workflow will be fast, snappy and detailed orientated with many different tasks and errands to keep track of.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

You need to avoid overindulging in drink or food this week, otherwise you will feel awful afterwards. If you are trying to find a solution to a tricky or puzzling problem, a little lateral thinking and ingenuity will soon see you coming up with the answers.

This is the ideal time for discussing important matters with members of the family or those you live with. Your financial fortunes are about to improve thanks to your business connections, partner or family. Singles, you never know where a light-hearted flirtation could lead you.

As Mars exits slow and deliberate Taurus and travels through quickminded Gemini between 3 March and 24 April, time itself may seem to speed up. Take extra care during this period when Mars squares the Sun and Mercury as accidents are more likely at home, at work or on the roads.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

On the love front, it will be important to slow down your mind and to be more conscious of speech and actions if you want peace and harmony. Take care health-wise, as your nerves might get a workout and inflammation could impact the fingers, hands, arms and lungs.

This is your chance to put your hidden skills on display. You will more than live up to your reputation of being very clever. In fact, you are being brilliant, and it will be amazingly easy for you to come up with just the right answer to any perplexing situation.

While you don’t always relish socialising, this week you are going to really enjoy hitting it off with others. Established relationships will flourish and you could make one or two new friends. Saturn helps you to stabilise, establish rules and boundaries and to build trust through to 24 April.

This is a good time for discussing domestic improvements. You will benefit from someone’s experience or expertise when they’re generous enough to share it with you. As Jupiter forms a harmonious aspect with Mars, it’s time to take advantage of an upbeat, optimistic and outgoing vibe.

WIN! Skin Virtue Pure Exfoliating Mask

WIN! The Father (M) film passes

Skin Virtue is a performance based anti-ageing, anti-allergen skincare range that is able to counteract the impact our harsh Australian weather and lifestyle can have on skin. Using cuttingedge technology and natural active ingredients, Skin Virtue delivers dramatic results for all skin types including sensitive, allergic and irritated skin. The Pure Exfoliating Mask is a gentle exfoliating face and décolletage mask treatment that features environmentally friendly ecological granules that do not harm the marine ecosystem. This anti-ageing mask will gently polish away dead surface skin cells to help retexturise and restore a more radiant looking complexion. Visit skinvirtue.com to find out more. Four lucky CW readers will each win a Skin Virtue Pure Exfoliating Mask (RRP $68).

In The Father (M), Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins (The Remains of the Day) plays the eponymous role of a mischievous and highly independent man who, as he ages, refuses all assistance from his daughter Anne (Academy Award winner Olivia Colman). Yet such help has become essential following Anne’s decision to move to Paris with her partner. As Anne’s father tries to make sense of his changing circumstances, he begins to doubt his loved ones, his own mind and even the fabric of his reality. Don’t miss The Father in cinemas 1 April! Canberra Weekly has 10 x The Father inseason double passes to be won.
