This week... From the editor A soaking wet Tuesday morning saw a six-vehicle pile-up on the Parkway. On a drizzly Saturday, police caught three males, aged 43, 65 and 46, drink driving at more than double, triple and quadruple the legal limit (respectively). Add to the mix a 22-year-old NSW driver caught speeding at 196km/h in an 80 zone (a staggering 116km/h over the limit!) and it’s a potentially lethal cocktail on the roads. Ahead of the worst of the wet weather, police urged road users to do everything they could to be safe, such as: slowing down and driving to the conditions, being patient, and not driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. “When the road is wet, you need to give yourself the best chance to stay in control of the situation,” ACT Policing said. Of course, it’s not just in the wet that road users need to stay in control of their vehicles; collisions occur at any time. A few top tips: keep adequate distance from the vehicle in front to allow safe stopping (i.e. don’t tailgate); use your indicators according to the road rules to indicate your intentions to other road users who, like me, aren’t mind readers; and drive with awareness. Reasons to be grateful this past week include police, emergency services, aged-care and front-line health workers helping to keep our community safe. Thank you. - Julie Samaras

news The 2021 Canberra Citizens of the Year were announced last Thursday 18 March, with the award going to all those who have enacted the ACT’s public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking at the Albert Hall ceremony, ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr thanked the group that includes thousands of Canberrans for their flexibility and resilience. “Throughout 2020, these Canberrans have undertaken our COVID-19 testing, tracing and quarantine,” he said. “They have cared for patients, established and run multiple testing sites to conduct over 100,000 COVID-19 tests; managed 15,000 exemptions requests, supported COVID-19 compliance, and kept our community well informed throughout the pandemic.” He also thanked those involved in the ACT vaccination program, which entered phase 1b on Monday 22 March. Mr Barr was particularly grateful to those who quickly analysed information and advised on the public health response, “often under extreme

pressure with very tight turnarounds”, including ACT Chief Health Officer Dr Kerryn Coleman and her team. Representatives from ACT Walk in Centres, ACT Pathology, and the Access Canberra COVID Compliance Team joined Dr Coleman and ACT Deputy Chief Health Officer Dr Vanessa Johnston on stage to accept the award on behalf of the individuals and teams whose work has helped protect the Canberra community during the pandemic. ACT Pathology scientist Lynette Chairuka, who works in the molecular lab, said it was phenomenal to have her team’s work recognised by the award. She remembered the first days of the COVID-19 outbreak vividly. “We knew we had to start the testing,” she said. “I think on that day, we did like 50 plus [tests], and from then onwards, numbers just skyrocketed – it was just crazy.” The lab that once operated a typical eight-hour day now works around the clock on a 24-hour roster.

2021 Canberra Citizens of the Year still have a task ahead of them ACT Chief Health Officer Dr Kerryn Coleman (right) says she is incredibly proud of every Canberran who continues to help protect Canberra during the pandemic.

“We had to just rise to the challenge, we knew we had to do what we had to do.” Dr Coleman said she was “incredibly proud” of the vast number of people who were involved and worked with “such passion and care in their hearts” over the past year. “I hope that they’re proud of themselves,” she said. “It has been a year unlike any that we’ve experienced, and a steep learning curve for everyone.” Dr Coleman thanked the community for coming along for the ride and cooperating, and for their friendly smiles when they spot her out for coffee on the weekend. - Rosa Ritchie

news At a ceremony last week, the newly appointed ACT Woman of the Year, Sonam Choden, was honoured for her work as a union delegate representing her coworkers, the Calvary Hospital cleaning staff, who battled for and secured fair wages and working conditions late last year. Mrs Choden says she feels strongly about the issue because the team consists of people like her women on temporary visas working long hours to support their spouses and children while they study. “I am extremely honoured to receive this award, though I don’t deserve it,” she says. “We did it as a team.” Wanting the best education possible, Mrs Choden’s young family moved to Australia five years ago, and Canberra has become their “second home”. Leaving behind a 12-year career as a primary school teacher, she juggles full-time and parttime cleaning jobs to pay for living expenses and school fees. “Whatever we are planning, we are planning for our kids only; we sacrifice everything for our kids.” Growing up in the Kingdom of Bhutan, Mrs

12

canberraweekly.com.au

Choden says her late father taught his children the importance of respecting women, including their mother who made many sacrifices. “He has always dreamed and encouraged us to be educated and independent. During difficult times, I still remember him supporting us throughout.” She feels her father’s dream is fulfilled because she and her siblings are financially independent. But that security was tenuous last year. “At our workplace, they didn’t increase the pay for almost three years.” Mrs Choden and her friends went through “tremendous mental pressure working with increasing health risks” when the pandemic began. “We played our critical role in keeping the workplace safe and hygienic; but still we were given little appreciation.” She represents her team during bargaining processes and planning meetings, a role she says is full of new experiences. When the Calvary cleaners asked for wages equal to what other companies pay for the same job – including at Canberra Hospital – they felt “insulted” by an offer of five cents more an hour.

Sonam encourages women to speak out whenever they are treated unfairly.

“So that’s why we had to stand up all together.” Workers sacrificed hours of income to protest, eventually securing a four-year agreement meeting their demands. Between parenting and work, Mrs Choden hasn’t had much time to plan what’s next. “One thing I can assure you is I’ll keep on working, I’ll keep on doing what I’m doing, and I’ll keep on supporting my colleagues at Calvary,” she says. “I’ll encourage them to speak out whenever they are treated unfairly.” The 2021 ACT Young Woman of the Year is environmentalist, Dhani Gilbert, and the Senior Woman of the Year is community organiser, Liz Stephens. Phase 1B begins Eighteen general practices in the ACT have started vaccinating their patients against coronavirus – the vanguard of 75 GPs that have registered to do so. But with an estimated 100,000 Canberrans eligible to be vaccinated from this week, the ACT Government and the Australian Medical Association counsel patients to be patient. “We’re not going to be making appointments for a quarter of a million doses across the country on Day 1,” Dr Antonio Di Dio, AMA (ACT) president, told ABC Radio on Monday. “If you’re going to manufacture a million doses a week, and we need to give 40 million doses, that’s 40 weeks – so not all are going to get done in the first week.” Phase 1B of the national coronavirus vaccination rollout began on Monday 22 March. Elderly people over 70; Indigenous people over 55; younger adults with underlying medical conditions or disabilities; critical / high risk workers (police, fire, defence, emergency services, meat processing); and other health care

workers can now be vaccinated. All 75 practices could be vaccinating patients within the next six weeks. The first 18 practices will receive on average 50 and 200 doses each week. ACT Minister for Health, Rachel Stephen-Smith, said they had received double the number of Pfizer doses expected for the week of 22 March, so more than 4,000 Pfizer doses are being administered this week. Winnunga Nimmityjah Aboriginal Health and Community Services will vaccinate Indigenous Canberrans. It has received 200 doses this week, which is expected to increase. Ms Stephen-Smith said the ACT government is slowly rolling out AstraZeneca at its Garran COVID-19 Surge Centre, and will soon have information about how people can book into government hubs (at time of going to press, this information was not available). - Nick Fuller Find an extended version of this story online at canberraweekly.com.au

RAAF to stage large fly-past Be sure to look up on Wednesday 31 March when 60 historic and current aircraft take part in the largest fly-past in decades to mark 100 years of service to Australia by the Royal Australian Air Force. The fly-past will begin at 10.30am, and end with a display by the Air Force Roulettes. The RAAF was formed in 1921 from the Australian Aviation Corps, the first aviation force of any British dominion. RAAF personnel have served in major conflicts, including World War II, Vietnam, and the Middle East; in peace-keeping operations in Somalia and East Timor; and in humanitarian missions, including 14

the Indonesian tsunami, the Nepali earthquake, and bushfires and COVID-19. On Monday 29 March 9.30am, a centenary welcome event will be held at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Memorial at the Australian War Memorial (AWM) to acknowledge the RAAF’s connections with Indigenous communities. On Tuesday 3pm, the RAAF will hold its annual commemorative ceremony at the Air Force Memorial on Anzac Parade and four historic aircraft will fly past. news First bricks laid at ACT’s Ahmadiyya Muslim mosque Hundreds assembled on Sunday 21 March for a ceremony to lay the foundation stone of Canberra’s Ahmadiyya Muslim mosque in Narrabundah. In a specially erected white marquee, religious leaders recited passages from the Quran; Ahmadi children in Australian flags sang the anthem; and dignitaries and community members placed the bricks. The event was attended by Ahmadis from around Australia, members of other faiths, and local politicians. It was a miserable, wet day, but that marquee glowed with good feeling. Holding such an event would be impossible in many countries, said Imam I.H. Kauser, national president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Australia. The reform sect is oppressed in some Muslim countries and even the UK, because adherents believe its founder, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad, is a later (but subordinate) prophet than Muhammad. Earlier this month, extremist mullahs, helped by police, tore down an Ahmadi mosque in Pakistan. “We have been persecuted in our countries, but here in this country we have freedom of

speech, freedom of religion, freedom to vote as we want,” Imam Kauser said. “Australia has shown love and harmony for minorities.” The new mosque, ‘Baitul Hadi’ (‘House of the Guide’, an attribute of Allah), will be built in Narupai Street, near the Narrabundah Ball Park. The community bought the site in 2018, and submitted the design in late 2019. The mosque will be only the third purposebuilt Ahmadi mosque in Australia. “The mosque is a simple contemporary structure, but with traditional Islamic elements like the dome and minaret,” co-ordinator Ahmad Munir said. It includes separate prayer areas for men and women, accommodating 300 worshippers; a library; a conference room; and Imam Ahmed Nadeem’s residence. It is expected to be completed within 12 to 15 months. Previous attempts to secure sites for a mosque in Rivett and Hume fell through. The Ahmadis currently use an industrial site in Fyshwick for their prayers and programs. The mosque will cost $4 million, all donated by local members. Traditionally, funds to

construct a mosque must come from the community. Canberra’s Ahmadi community is small, only about 150 people, and few are wealthy, but many have pledged $100 or $150,000, often at tremendous financial sacrifice. One young man sold his car, women have donated their gold wedding jewellery, and some have given their personal savings. “It truly amazes me as to how these members and their families are determined to pledge such substantial amounts in the way of building Allah’s house,” treasurer Mohammad Hasan said. Ahmadiyya, an Islamic revival group, was founded in India in 1899. Mirza Ghulam Ahmad declared he was the Mahdi awaited by the Muslims, and the Messiah expected by Jews and Christians, his mission to peacefully convert the world to Islam; end bloodshed and religious wars; and return the religion to its original, true meaning of peace, forgiveness and tolerance. Imam Kauser and Imam Nadeem welcomed non-Muslims to visit the mosque. “The house of God is for everyone,” Imam Kauser said. - Nick Fuller

Norwood Park advertising moment

Norwood Park: a beautiful place to remember

N

orwood Park is Canberra’s oldest and most experienced crematorium, surrounded by lush gardens that offer a peaceful resting place for those who have left us, and tranquility to all visitors. For over 50 years, Norwood Park has provided Canberrans a place of beauty and solace to honour the lives of loved ones, with thoughtfully arranged memorials and ceremonies, and serene landscaped grounds. Over the past 12-15 years, Norwood Park has undertaken an amazing transformation, with a vastly improved Chapel precinct now able to seat almost 300 guests. The great development that has taken place in the picturesque bush setting – with many new Memorial Garden areas – gives families a variety

of choices when selecting an area to place their loved ones. Possum Corner is just one area which has been transformed into a very private setting, incorporating the Teddy Bear Garden, so families are able to select an area within the precinct to inter their loved ones. Stephen Beer, Managing Director of Norwood Park, says there are many new pathways leading to the various memorial gardens, including rose garden edgings, family estates and memorial bush rock areas. “The various waterways always prove very popular with families,” he says. “As the newly planted trees and rose garden develop, the areas become very private.” Mr Beer says many families visit

the park on weekends to celebrate birthday parties and remember their loved ones, taking advantage of the ample table and chair settings. A stroll through the Norwood Park grounds reveals spectacular views and secluded gardens featuring carefully curated natives, rose beds, cherry trees, maples, creeks and waterfalls. Prestigious family estates are set in individual garden beds, with space to memorialise multiple family members together. Plaques on the Ex-Service Remembrance Wall honour the lives of those who have served. Norwood Park’s experienced staff provide support throughout the

process of making final arrangements, with the belief that designing a memorial helps complete the natural process of grieving for many people. Mourners are welcome to farewell loved ones according to their faith or secular requirements, and Norwood Park can offer flowers from a local florist and a distinguished range of urns to personalise the details. Norwood Park is listed on the ACT Heritage Register, an acknowledgment of the important role it has played in the ACT community over the past 50 years. Norwood Park’s inviting modern design, open to all, makes this a special place for the community to reminisce and pay tribute.

news Tomorrow marks the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh Independence Day, 26 March 1971, which one Bengali freedom fighter and Canberran, Kamrul Ahsan Khan, recalls as the beginning of his involvement in a nine-month battle to gain independence from Pakistan. Mr Khan has lived in Canberra for over 20 years and is one of 11 freedom fighters in Australia, according to the Bangladesh High Commission. “There were a few things that happened to us [Bengali people]: we were economically exploited, we were culturally exploited, all the way. All the way,” he says. “We tried to negotiate. We tried to do it officially.” The war between East Pakistan and West Pakistan, now Bangladesh and Pakistan, saw large-scale atrocities, the exodus of 10 million Bengali refugees to India and the displacement of 30 million people. Mr Khan grew up as one of 13 siblings in the

17th-century old city of Dhaka, now the capital of Bangladesh. Two of his younger brothers joined him in the liberation movement and he recalls his family’s sense of justice with pride. Bangladesh High Commissioner to Australia, Mohammad Sufiur Rahman, said the rapidly developing nation was guided by the policies of social justice written by the late Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, known as the father of the nation. Australia was the first developed country to recognise Bangladesh on 31 January 1972, and Mr Rahman said it was a “bold statement” that generated sustained goodwill towards Australia. He praised the contribution of DutchAustralian commando officer William Ouderland, who actively participated in the Liberation War and received a gallantry award, the Bir Protik, from the Government of Bangladesh. Mr Ouderland is the only foreigner to have received this honour.

sport Raiders survive secondhalf shark attack It was a tale of two halves at Kogarah Oval in southern Sydney on Sunday night, 21 March, as the Raiders held on after a dominant first half to edge out the Cronulla Sharks 12-10. Played in very wet conditions in front of just over 3,000 fans who braved the elements, the Raiders started strong and got on the board first through young centre Seb Kris. Canberra controlled the first half and a late try to Hudson Young sent them into the break with a welldeserved 12-0 lead. But after half time, the script was almost flipped, as the Sharks came out determined and the Raiders

76 Hardwick Crescent, Kippax

made several errors. The Sharks capitalised with a try to Will Kennedy before Josh Dugan scored in the 72nd minute to make it 12-10 with the kick to come. Chad Townsend missed the rather simple conversion that would have tied the scores but had another chance in the dying stages. Raiders fans would have been on the edge of their seats when Sharks half Chad Townsend lined up for a penalty attempt to square the ledger with 20 seconds on the clock. In NRL round 3, the Raiders will host the Warriors at GIO Stadium, Saturday 27 March 3pm. - Denholm Samaras

Giants fall to Saints in slippery round one thriller An undermanned St Kilda Saints produced a late rally to stun the GWS Giants by eight points at a wet Giants Stadium on Sunday afternoon, 21 March. After a disappointing 2020 season, the Giants looked like making a winning start to 2021 after building a two-goal lead midway through the last quarter. However, the Saints kicked four of the last five goals to seal the 13.8 (86) to 11.12 (78) victory. Despite the disappointing

loss, there were several positives for the Giants with skipper Stephen Coniglio, Tim Taranto, Jacob Hopper and Harrison Himmelberg all starting the season in good form. Canberra local Thomas Highmore impressed in his AFL debut for the Saints, racking up 19 disposals playing in the backline. He was presented his jersey before the game by fellow Canberran and Saints captain, Jack Steele. - Vincent Samaras

Canberra United records crucial 1-0 win on the road A match-winning goal from Michelle Heyman in her 100th game in green has kept Canberra United in the running for finals football and delivered them their first away win for the season, a tough 1-0 victory over Newcastle Jets on Saturday 20 March. Nicki Flannery and Paige Satchell looked threatening early on, with both making great pace up the wing to keep Newcastle’s goalkeeper Claire Coelho on her toes. 20

canberraweekly.com.au

However, it was in the 22nd minute that Canberra’s attempts came to fruition. Grace Maher sent a ball beautifully to striker Michelle Heyman who was able to get Canberra on the scoreboard, and in the end, was the only goal recorded for the night. Canberra United is fourth on the ladder and will face ladder leaders Sydney FC at Viking Park, Canberra this Friday 26 March 5.35pm.

GIVIT donation of the week: Educational toys With restrictions continuing to lift, one of GIVIT’s registered charities is looking for ways to re-engage with families and children struggling within our communities. The organisation is building a mobile playgroup that will travel to areas across the region, offering sessions in local parks and shared spaces for families who are isolated, fi nancially disadvantaged and where transport is limited. The organisation requires toys that can educate and entertain the young children participating in the mobile play sessions. The donations they require are preloved, good quality toys for children aged 0-5 years, including plastic animals, sea creatures, native animals and dinosaurs to encourage imaginative play and language development, wooden puzzles and building toys such as Duplo, train tracks with building boards and construction vehicles. For health and safety reasons, all items must be in great condition, washed, without damage or missing pieces, and safe for children under the age of three. To donate, visit givit.org.au/donate-items, search by category “Toys and Games” in your local area. After you pledge the item, you will be contacted by the relevant organisation to arrange pick-up, post or drop-off.

Fish and Seafood Tips

• A firm bladder area is the best indicator of a fresh whole fish. Please note that contact with ice can dull the eyes of whole fish, even when very fresh. Fresh fish should have a pleasant fresh ocean smell. Never store fillets in direct contact with ice. Always remove packaging, cover and refrigerate. Cook and eat within two days. The firmness of uncooked prawns can be an indicator of freshness. However, some species are naturally softer than others. Uncooked prawns should be stored in a bowl of ice and water, in the fridge. The ice and water should be changed daily. Cook and eat within two days. Cooked prawns should be kept, covered, in the fridge. Eat within 2 days. Always defrost fish and seafood in a covered bowl, in the fridge. Cover Oysters and Smoked Trout with wet paper, then seal in a container or with wrap and refrigerate. Caution: Even ‘boneless’ fish may contain bones. Take care before eating and check carefully before feeding to children.

Meat-free eats This week, food writer Libby Kimber brings you a meat-free meal that will work for Good Friday or anytime!

Eggs, greens and cheese pie Prep: 30-45 mins

200g ricotta

Cook: 45 mins

1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

Serves 8-10

Zest of 1/2 lemon 1/4 cup mint leaves, chopped

Olive oil

1/4 cup parsley, chopped

375g filo pastry, thawed

1/4 cup dill, chopped

500g mixed greens (spinach, kale, silverbeet leaves), chopped

11 eggs (or a dozen depending on the size of eggs)

1 brown onion, finely diced

2 Tbsp breadcrumbs

2-3 garlic cloves, crushed

2 Tbsp sesame seeds

200g feta

Lemon wedges, to serve

Preheat the oven to 180 oC and grease a 28cm round baking dish or cast iron pan with olive oil. Put the filo sheets on a work surface and cover with a damp tea towel to prevent them from drying out. Place all the greens in a large pot on medium heat with the lid on and “sweat” them until they wilt. Remove from heat and set aside in a colander to drain and cool. Once cool, squeeze any excess water and chop into smaller pieces. This step prevents the crust from getting soggy. Place them into a large bowl. Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a pan and cook the onion on medium heat until soft and lightly golden, then set aside to cool. Now add the cooled onion, garlic, fetta, ricotta, nutmeg, lemon zest and herbs to the greens and mix well with a wooden spoon. Crumble the feta, and then the ricotta ensuring that the pieces aren’t too small as they’ll break up as you combine all the ingredients. Mixing the ingredients with your hands creates a nice even texture without over-mixing. Add two beaten eggs, combine, and then the breadcrumbs with a final few stirs so it’s all evenly combined. Use two sheets of baking paper and overlap them to make a large square. Drizzle with olive oil then place one filo sheet at a time on top, in a

28

canberraweekly.com.au

clockwise direction starting in the top left-hand corner to cover the surface area of the baking paper. Each layer will have four overlapping filo sheets. Drizzle with olive oil and continue arranging filo sheets in a clockwise direction until all have been used up. Don’t worry if there are some tears as this won’t matter once it’s cooked. Holding the baking paper and filo sheets from the top, drag it over your round dish or cast iron pan so it’s directly in the middle and gently press the baking paper/filo into the pan. Spoon the spinach and cheese filling over the filo and spread it out evenly. Carefully crack one egg at a time into a cup and gently pour over the filling one at a time, so the yolk stays intact. Depending on the size of your eggs, you should fit 9-10 eggs. Try to arrange them evenly, ideally with a yolk right in the centre. Using a sharp knife or kitchen scissors, trim the edges of the overhanging filo so it makes a rough circle. Gently fold the filo into the pie over the eggs, once again being careful not to break them. Drizzle olive oil over the top, scatter with sesame seeds and bake for around 45 minutes or until crunchy and golden brown. Serve with lemon wedges. Vapiano Canberra has announced it will permanently close its restaurant on Bunda Street in the City next week. The Italian restaurant chain put the closure down to “a tough 12-18 months, with bushfires followed by COVID”, and said the decision would allow them to focus resources on expanding the brand into other regions. Vapiano will be open until 9pm on Thursday 1 April, so get in quick for a final carbs and cocktails sesh before they close! Book a table for the final time via vapiano.com.au What would you classify as Australia’s ‘national dish’? Well, according to Royal Doulton, it’s the humble chicken parmi (or parma). A survey from the chinaware company found 27% of people chose the parmi as their favourite dish, followed by Anzac biscuits, pavlova, lamingtons, snags, a Chiko roll and the spinach cob.

Incoming CSO artistic advisor Jessica Cottis grew up in Canberra and said her appointment is a “moving” and “poignant” moment amid her globetrotting career.

Jessica Cottis ‘honoured’ to take CSO reins ahead of Llewellyn One It was a long trip for incoming Canberra Symphony Orchestra (CSO) artistic advisor Jessica Cottis to arrive here from her base in London to conduct the Orchestra for the first time in her new role. Arriving in town mid-March prior to Llewellyn One: Seven Deadly Sins at the end of the month, Cottis completed her two-week quarantine in Adelaide before making her way to the capital. As a result of international travel currently being so difficult, Cottis said the plan is to remain in Canberra for “a number of months”; much longer than normal circumstances would have dictated. “In many ways it’s a pleasant, happy outcome in that I wouldn’t 30

canberraweekly.com.au

normally be here for so long,” she told Canberra Weekly. The added time in Canberra comes at a fortuitous moment given Cottis’ recent appointment, allowing her to strategise and formulate a plan for the next few years with the Orchestra’s executive branch. “It’s great to have this time in person,” Cottis said. “Zoom is a wonderful thing, but there’s nothing better than being in an actual space in real time; it’s much more creative and in the moment.” Speaking ahead of Llewellyn One, Cottis said she’s excited to take the podium with the Orchestra after many opportunities in Europe were cancelled last year. “I was really fortunate in that

during summer in Europe last year, a number of performances were able to go ahead,” she said. “That was four months ago now and normally I conduct three to four programs per month, so it is a really long time.” The program for Llewellyn One is headlined by title work, Kurt Weill’s The Seven Deadly Sins, written by the German-born composer in Paris in the 1930s as a witty satire decrying capitalism. Described as a “dynamic, mesmerising work”, the performance will feature CSO 2021 Artist in Focus, soprano Lorina Gore, a banjo, and, curiously, a barbershop quartet. “It’s extraordinary music that uses full sense of orchestra to amazing effect,” Cottis said. The Llewellyn One program also includes Stravinsky’s Circus Polka, contemporary Australian composer Holly Harrison’s Fizzin’ Fury, and the Korngold Violin Concerto that will feature guest violinist, Courtenay Cleary. All the music programmed for the performance was carefully considered by Cottis. “They’re all really special works for me,” she said. The Seven Deadly Sins was one of the first pieces Cottis conducted professionally for the Scottish Opera after completing her studies. She’s also just a big fan of Weill’s work. “He’s one of a handful of composers who can real use music to express political and social ideas, and I find that very interesting,” she said. “I love Korngold. It’s like jumping into a scented bath; it’s just immersive and beautifully perfumed. “Stravinsky is a great composer of the last century, one of the titans of classical music.” As for Harrison’s Fizzin’ Fury, Cottis premiered that work in 2019. “It’s really nice to come back to her work with a different orchestra and different audience,” she said. “It links in with the rest of program nicely as it’s also influenced a bit by other styles of music.” Cottis sought to create a varied repertoire for the performance to create a “real adventure” for both the

orchestra and audience. “Much of the repertoire Canberra Symphony hasn’t played before, it will be a real adventure for us and a great way to start this relationship,” she said. The internationally acclaimed conductor grew up in Canberra and said taking on this appointment with the CSO is a “moving” and “poignant” moment for her. “As conductors, we spend our times quite literally flying around the world,” she said. “It’s so important to give back actually, and Canberra has given me so much in my early musical development. “With this opportunity, I feel I can come back and share my experiences abroad … That’s a very personal thing, but also a very important thing for me.” Cottis first conducted the Orchestra in March 2017 and left impressed. “It was really wonderful, a real connection there … I saw an orchestra so musical and really hungry to make music together in the best possible way.” Four years later, now as artistic advisor, Cottis is keen to start a new chapter for the Orchestra with a new and extended vision, while also building on the “wonderful” work of previous CSO artistic director, Nicholas Milton. “Now my role is very multifaceted, conduct the orchestra a number of times a year, but I’m programming the whole season and very involved in the vision of the orchestra moving forward,” she said. “I’m really fascinated with how a concert can be put together and take audiences on a real journey of sorts, to be really transported somewhere else. “It’s an orchestra we can shape how we move forward with a real focus on developing Australian music and Australian artists; it’s super meaningful for me.” The CSO’s Llewellyn One: Seven Deadly Sins will be performed 31 March and 1 April 7.30pm at Llewellyn Hall, ANU; cso.org.au - Denholm Samaras

Dane Lam to conduct Mozart opera Conductor Dane Lam arrived in Canberra on Sunday 21 March to rehearse National Opera’s inaugural production next month of a Mozart masterwork. La Clemenza di Tito, a Classical opera seria of emperors and court intrigues in Rome, was one of the first operas Lam conducted, in Manchester in 2009. Since then, Lam has made a name for himself as “one of Australia’s most talented young conductors” (Limelight Magazine): leading orchestras on four continents, and performing the first Western operas and symphonies heard in China’s former imperial capital, Xi’an. Now he returns to the Mozart opera with greater depth and experience. “It was great to crack open the old score again and compare my old markings; to see what had changed, and the way I thought about the music,” Lam said. Tito is generally considered second-tier Mozart: still one of the 100 most frequently performed operas, but by no means as popular as Don Giovanni or The Magic Flute.

Tito may not be well-known, Lam argues, but it has stunning music and stylistic innovations. “There is such a wealth of amazing tunes that are also really deeply felt moments.” The standout moments include a simple but touching duet, ‘Ah, perdona al primo affetto’; Sesto’s aria ‘Parto, parto!’, as he leaves to assassinate his best friend Emperor Titus, contains vocal fireworks and great passages for the basset horn (a historical instrument like a big clarinet); and the complex villainess Vitellia’s aria ‘Non più di fiori’ is a piece of simple, unadorned, heartfelt emotion. “Mozart was a crucial turning point in the entire history of opera and musical drama,” Lam believes. Mozart imbued moving passages of music with action, drama and real emotion in a way that he says Handel or Gluck did not; the story is carried forward not in speech-like recitative, but in music, highlighted through the orchestra. Lam said he was looking forward to working with the Canberra Symphony Orchestra, which he conducted in 2018.

“They were a very open orchestra, willing to try new things,” he said. “Not all orchestras have that inquisitive and open quality to experiment and try new ways of playing things.” Lam views conducting as a relationship between conductor, performer and audience; but opera can be more complex than a symphony. Singers’ instruments are inside them: the voice. “It’s a very sensitive and beautiful thing, but it requires diplomacy, tact, and encouragement,” he said. The conductor must work hand-in-hand with the director to bring the drama alive in a way that is true to what Mozart wrote, and that singers feel able to deliver their very best – and then convey that to the audience. Tito is the first production of baritone Peter Coleman-Wright’s fledgling company, which he hopes will put Canberra on the international music map and nurture Australian artists. - Nick Fuller La Clemenza di Tito: 10, 13, 15, 17 April, Llewellyn Hall, ANU School of Music; nationalopera.org.au Find an extended version of this story online at canberraweekly.com.au

Music for Canberra enters ‘A New World’ of music Music for Canberra’s first concert of 2021, A New World, will showcase a new repertoire from both the Canberra Youth Orchestra (CYO) and the James McCusker Orchestra (JMO). Taking place on Sunday 28 March, the performance will feature the outstanding young musicians from CYO and JMO conducted by Rowan HarveyMartin, Louis Sharpe, Tim Wickham, Jenny Higgs, Lucy Macourt and Mandy Philipse in an exciting explosion of daring sounds. With a program comprising music from Gershwin to Dvorak, A New World’s repertoire will include something for all ages and musical tastes. Music for Canberra is a community focused, not-for-profit organisation offering Canberra’s

largest program of musical tuition, experiences and performance opportunities. CYO is the premier youth symphony orchestra in the ACT and wider region, bringing together the region’s finest young musicians to deliver high-quality concerts. Named after one of the original founding members of Canberra Youth Music, passionate musician James ‘Jim’ McCusker, the JMO is Music for Canberra’s second orchestra. The JMO provides an ideal environment for young players to gain exposure to the fundamentals of orchestral ensemble playing. Music for Canberra’s A New World will be held Sunday 28 March 12-2pm, Canberra Girls Grammar School, Senior Hall; tickets via Eventbrite.

Now showing Crisis (MA15+) In the thick of an opioid epidemic, a young opioid runner is caught by police on the Canadian/US border. In Detroit, a local drug trafficking gang headed by Jake Kelly (Armie Hammer) finds out, and soon Kelly heads to his DEA office to update his team on their latest undercover mission to bring down multiple cartels. At a university, Dr Tyrone Brower (Gary Oldman) learns that the non-addictive painkiller a big pharma company has contracted him to test is anything but, and Claire Reimann (Evangeline Lilly) gets visited by police about her missing son. Steven Soderbergh’s excellent Traffic covers the US war on crime from the perspective of Mexican cartels, homeless addicts, DEA investigations and prosecutions, all the way to policy development in the

White House. Comparatively, Crisis is more local and commercial. Director Nicholas Jarecki steps away from the classy world of white-collar crime in Arbitrage to juggling three stories focusing on the opioid crisis covering addiction, drug trafficking and the commercialisation of medication designed to end drug addiction. Kelly is a determined powerhouse, fuelled by his young sister’s (Lily-Rose Depp) hopeless heroin addiction. Brower battles an ethical quandary with his tenured career and reputation at stake, and Reimann forges ahead in exacting revenge against those responsible for the death of her young son. Verdict: An engrossing and tense crime thriller that explores the parallel tragedy of America’s drug industry on both sides of the fence. 3.5 stars. Crisis is screening at Dendy and Palace cinemas.

Book talk This week, Michael Popple examines three impressive recent novels that are worth checking out. You can find more of Michael’s book reviews on his blog: unseenlibrary.com Dangerous Women by Hope Adams Michael Joseph, $32.99

In 1841, the prison ship Rajah is transporting female convicts to Tasmania. Determined to keep her charges productive, matron Kezia Hayter organises a sewing project to create a beautiful quilt. However, the tentative peace aboard the ship is broken when a woman is brutally stabbed. Trapped aboard a ship of potential suspects, Kezia must find who has crossed the line into murder. Dangerous Women is a fantastic debut from Hope Adams, partially based on a true story. Adams has created a clever historical murder mystery, laced with drama and great characters. An interesting and enjoyable read.

Relentless by Mark Greaney Sphere, $32.99

La Baguette proudly presents

Around the world, intelligence agents are going missing and the CIA wants to know why. When a formerly dead analyst resurfaces, the CIA sends Court Gentry, the Gray Man, to extract him. However, when his target is brutally killed in front of him, Gentry finds himself caught up in a dangerous conspiracy, one that threatens to start a war. Relentless is an exceptional spy thriller that serves as the 10th entry in the outstanding Gray Man series. Containing a captivating and deeply exciting narrative and a fantastic writing style, Relentless is a truly excellent thriller that comes highly recommended.

The Codebreakers by Alli Sinclair Harlequin, $29.99

WEDNESDAY 31 MARCH, 6PM PALACE ELECTRIC CINEMA

1943, Brisbane. As the war rages in the Pacific, Ellie O’Sullivan is given a rare opportunity to help her country when she is recruited into the Central Bureau. Working closely with England’s Bletchley Park codebreakers, Ellie and her new colleagues work to decipher enemy communications to end the war. However, joining means signing a lifetime secrecy contract, and the pressure of keeping quiet will challenge them all. Inspired by the real-life codebreakers of Australia’s Central Bureau, this is a unique and powerful historical war drama that highlights a fascinating group of women. Sinclair has produced a remarkable story that readers will find gripping and compelling.

wellbeing

How are you breathing at night? Are you a ‘mouth breather’? If you wake up tired and feel like you haven’t rested all night, you might be! It’s normal to breathe through your mouth sometimes, for example, when you’re exercising or working strenuously or if your nose is blocked due to a cold or sinus infection. However, if you breathe through your mouth as a more habitual pattern, it can cause problems. The most common time for habitual mouth breathing is at night. You may begin the night

with open nasal passages, however, as the night progresses nasal tissues can swell, and at the same time, your throat muscles relax. The combined effect is your airway becomes constricted. When your airway is constricted, your blood oxygen and carbon dioxide levels change which triggers your brain into a ‘fight or flight’ response with associated adrenaline and cortisol release. This release wakes you up just enough to alert you to an issue with your airway and, to solve the problem, you subconsciously switch to mouth breathing. Interestingly, teeth clenching and grinding at night can also be triggered by the same response. As you can imagine, if you’re breathing though your mouth, the quality of your sleep is often very poor. Being in fight or flight at night is the opposite of what your body is craving – deep, restorative sleep. So, how do you become a ‘nose breather’ again? One solution is to tape your mouth at night. Leave the gaffer tape in the garage, though – you need to use a special medicalgrade tape that is soft on the skin. The tape

WITH WESLEY SMITH DIRECTOR, LIVE WELL SPA & WELLNESS CENTRE MANUKA livewellnaturally.com.au meditatewithwes.com

redirects your breath through your nose and, by repetition, you re-educate your body to habitually breathe this way. If you want to try this method, do your research and talk with a trusted health professional first to make sure it’s a suitable technique for you. If you mouth breathe at night, it’s usually a reflection of a dysfunctional over-breathing pattern during the day. As we understand more about the impact of the way we breathe on everything from our energy levels, mental health and immune function, there are more health professionals who take an active interest in teaching better breathing, such as physiotherapists, dentists, GPs and yoga teachers. One thing is for sure, if you breathe well at night, you’ll sleep better and that might be enough to convince you that this aspect of your wellbeing is worth exploring.

property of the week R E A L E S TAT E

Sophisticated and serene Sutton NSW 303 Cartwright Avenue This property in Sutton sits just 15 minutes from the Canberra CBD, yet presents a serene and sophisticated rural offering. “With 13.6 acres underfoot, this is an opportunity to live sustainably, grow your own fruit, vegetables and eggs and reap the benefits [with] all the hard work already done,” says McGrath North Canberra partner, Christopher Dixon. “Nothing to do but simply enjoy life.” The grand residence boasts five bedrooms, myriad living areas and space in spades to explore the outdoor surroundings. It’s been designed with family life in mind and includes a segregated main bedroom suite with walk-in robe and renovated ensuite and a rumpus room adjacent to bedrooms two and three.

“The ideal buyer would be a family seeking to upsize to a residence which caters for all ages with large, segregated secondary bedrooms opening to a kids’ living room, a gracious formal entertaining and a family room for everyone to come together,” Dixon says. The home boasts a north-facing, solar-passive design, and allows for views across the lush gardens, lawns and the paddocks beyond. It also includes double glazing, a 2kw solar system, ducted gas heating and a slow-combustion fireplace. The brand-new kitchen includes a walk-in pantry. Outside, find the 120,000L water tank, established gardens with irrigation, established orchard with fruiting trees and a sealed driveway that leads to the turning circle and double garage.

Horse owners will also be smitten with what’s on offer at 303 Cartwright Avenue, which includes four paddocks and direct access to the estate greenway. “A full-size horse arena, two bay stables, tack room, tennis court and extra shedding also makes this property a truly special offering keeping the kids active and entertained.”

property news

ACT construction industry going strong: MBA Master Builders ACT says the ACT construction industry has seen the second strongest growth nationally with an increase of 2,016 jobs in the Territory since the start of the year, according to ABS data. “The ACT construction industry lost 5.8% of its workforce since February 2020 and has now added 2,016 jobs since the start of 2021,” said Master Builders ACT CEO Michael Hopkins.

“Seeing industry employment grow across the country and in particular the ACT, is a huge relief to the nearly 20,000 people employed in the local construction sector.” He said the ACT’s growth, and the “significant rebound” in employment in the construction industry shows the impact of the industry on the greater economy. “This new data shows the Federal and ACT

Government that investment in the building and construction industry is a valuable investment in the overall performance of the economy. “With every $1 spent generating $3 in economic return, it makes sense for the ACT and Federal Government to invest more into the building and construction industry.”

Stockland yesterday celebrated the commencement of construction at its $260 million development in Red Hill, The Parks. As well as the turning of the sod, the community’s Central Park was also officially opened. Stockland has partnered with local company DOMA for the development, which will include 25 land lots, 83 terraces and 136 apartments across six buildings. “The vision for Red Hill is an urban, vibrant community, which will incorporate tree-lined streets,

open spaces and expansive views,” says Stockland regional development manager, Calum Ross. “It is also ideally located and walking distance to local shops and services. “We’re also delighted to open the Park, which will be a focal point for the community,” says Mr Ross. “It will be the central activity space for the precinct, supported by and connected to intimate, passive heritage parks and green pedestrian links.” For more on this story, head to canberraweekly.com.au

The open plan design has generous touches such as 2.7m ceilings and staircase framed by full height voids. celebrity birthday LADY GAGA 28 March 1986 Inspiration will run amok for Lady Gaga during the year ahead and much travel is likely. This is a time in her life to let go of habits, people and negative circumstances that are not for her higher purpose. These situations, people or circumstances may have been holding her back and it is time to free herself of them. This is also a time that any good deeds she does will be well rewarded not necessarily financially but in terms of inner satisfaction and spiritually.

in the stars ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

The Full Moon on 28 March indicates that a loved one may be pressuring you and you won’t enjoy it. Perhaps they are using a form of emotional blackmail. It won’t last long, but it won’t be much fun in the meantime. It is time to establish boundaries.

The Full Moon on 28 March indicates that keeping the peace at home is almost impossible right now as someone is being huffy and easily offended. You obviously need to discuss certain things with them, but this is not the time. Pick your battles, as the saying goes.

The Full Moon on 28 March in Libra indicates that some of the people in your life are moody. While you might be in no mood to compromise or to consider anyone else’s needs, a little more cooperation by all parties can create a more peaceful environment.

The Full Moon on 28 March indicates that you need to be careful of ego clashes with others as someone is doing their best to undermine you and make you doubt yourself. If you’re feeling tired and insecure, take time out to rest and bolster your resilience.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY As Mars squares the Sun and Mercury, accidents are more likely so take extra care. The Full Moon on 28 March highlights your ambitions. However, any progress you make will be ruined if you behave ruthlessly or arrogantly, so don’t be tempted to throw your weight around.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG The Full Moon on 28 March indicates that a tense atmosphere is likely with a sibling, neighbour or colleague. Someone is feeling defensive and, as a result, they are looking for an excuse for an argument. There could also be issues involving your car or technology.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

The Full Moon on 28 March is a time when secrets could come out of the woodwork so be careful who you trust with confidential information. You also need extra rest this week so make sure you get it as it will help you stay strong and healthy.

The Full Moon on 28 March warns you to be careful of what you say as it is likely to be misunderstood. If you are dealing with anything legal, be certain to read the small print and double check the paperwork. Be sure to make time for rest and relaxation.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR

With Mars in quick-minded Gemini until 24 April, time itself may seem to speed up. The Full Moon on 28 March is a time when you could lose your temper over matters connected to your children or family. Take a deep breath to avoid upsetting everyone around you.

The Full Moon on 28 March indicates that you may part with more money than you intended. Also, be careful of judging others on what they do or don’t own. Make sure you don’t become too materialistic as you’ll discover there are more important things in life.

The Full Moon on 28 March indicates that a friend or loved one is being difficult. They’re determined to have things their own way, no matter what it costs in terms of ruffling other people’s feathers. You will be directly involved, and they may try to boss you around!

The Full Moon on 28 March indicates a need to discuss financial matters with those you live with. Rather than getting het up about things, do your best to remain cool, calm and collected. Talk through the issues rationally and they’re likely to be resolved to everyone’s satisfaction.

WIN! ZURU Puppycorns

WIN! Collective film passes Collective (MA15+) follows a crack team of investigators at the Romanian newspaper Gazeta Sporturilor as they try to uncover a vast health-care fraud that enriched moguls and politicians — and led to the deaths of innocent citizens. The story starts in 2015 with a fire at the Bucharest nightclub Colectiv. The tragedy killed 27 people on site and injured over 100 more. Romania’s Health Minister promised the burn victims would get the highest-quality treatment, but, in subsequent months, dozens more perished. Collective’s pursuit of truth will be felt by audiences around the world. Releasing 8 April; screening in Canberra at Dendy. Canberra Weekly has 6 x Collective in-season double passes to be won.

My favourite things FAMILY

What I do day-in and day-out is driven by my desire to make sure we leave the world better than how we found it. I only have to walk through my front door to be inspired and driven to make a difference Brad, Ruby, Jack, Max and Cinda our dog.

GINGER NINJA FROM TUMUT RIVER BREWING CO This brewery along with countless other independent brewers in the mighty EdenMonaro are one of my favourite things. The people behind these distinctive local brews add such depth and interest to local communities and economies. Bottoms up!

CHOCOLATE I don’t drink coffee so if I need a quick pick-me-up, I go for chocolate! Cadbury’s Top Deck, Black Forest, Twirl or a Fry’s Turkish Delight do the job every time. Everything in moderation, of course, but it gets me through some days in Parliament House.

Kristy McBain Federal Member for Eden-Monaro

The former Mayor of the Bega Valley Shire, now Federal Member for Eden-Monaro, is proud to be the twelfth person and the first woman to represent the diverse electorate which spans Narooma to Queanbeyan, Braidwood to Yass, Tumut, Batlow, Cooma, Jindabyne, Eden, Bega and many stops in between. Eden-Monaro is part of Australia’s rich democratic tradition; the seat was proclaimed in 1900 and was one of the original 65 electorates contested at the first federal election. While a student at the University of Canberra, Kristy studied journalism and law, and has since worked in various industries including retail, law and as a small business owner. While raising a young family, she remains focused on strengthening the local economy and environment in the community she loves. Kristy said it is the ideas and concerns raised with her by her constituents that form the basis of her advocacy, as the recovery from drought, bushfire and Coronavirus continues. - Cassandra Power

JETTIES AND BRIDGES OF THE BEGA BALLEY My teenage years were spent jumping off various jetties and bridges in and around Merimbula and I loved it. My kids do the same thing now and I love watching them. I invite anyone and everyone to come and holiday with us - you’ll experience the best beaches, lakes, and inlets on the East Coast of Australia.

LIVE MUSIC I love seeing live music, whether it’s at a local bar, restaurant, community hall or outdoor venue. While at uni in Canberra, I saw the John Butler Trio at the ANU Refectory for just $10 and have since seen them at least half a dozen times. My last gig was local talent Kim Churchill at Tilba Winery.
