This week... From the editor After a summer getaway with friends to Pittwater was foiled by the Northern Beaches lockdown over the festive season, I was fortunate to be able to join the rescheduled sailing adventure for a few days last week. We were doubly fortunate the heavy rains that brought flooding along much of the east coast had eased, allowing us to explore this beautiful part of the world, surrounded by Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, in glorious autumn weather. (Triply fortunate the weather was even better than in January.) What was heartbreaking, though, was to see the quantity of household items, vegetation and sediment that had been swept down the Hawkesbury River and either washed onto shore or bobbing on the currents, potentially headed for the ocean. There were lounge suites and tub chairs, mattresses, tyres, sheds, water tanks, garden furniture and pots, that had been washed away from people’s properties, plus all kinds of plastic and styrofoam remnants. Our hearts go out to all those affected by the floods, and our gratitude to all those helping with rescue and clean-up efforts. Reasons to be grateful this past week include a relaxing yet invigorating holiday exploring Pittwater and Ku-ringgai Chase, splashing in fresh streams and waterfalls, spending time with friends, our great team keeping things ticking in my absence, restorative yoga, and the many flood rescue and clean-up heroes. Thank you. - Julie Samaras

news New Batemans Bay Bridge open for Easter traffic The new $274 million Batemans Bay bridge is open and, in keeping with tradition, on Saturday 27 March, the coastal community were the first to walk across the result of 722,000 hours of construction. Innes’ Boatshed co-owner, Tracey Innes, has had a front row seat to the action from her waterfront fish and chip shop a few hundred metres away. She said the community was excited for the opening of the new bridge, while preparing to say goodbye to its 65-year-old predecessor. “It’s a little bit sad, it’s a catch 22 – we’re excited to see the new one, it’s a beautiful design,” she said. “But by the same token, the old one’s been there forever.” Given the way fires, floods and COVID-19 have troubled the coastal community since late 2019, the construction phase hasn’t felt too long to Ms Innes. “In all of that [construction teams] have kept going, so I think for the locals it feels like it happened overnight.” The Innes family also runs Merinda Cruises, otherwise known as ‘the ferry’, which stops traffic

when the old bridge opens to allow the vessel to pass through. Ms Innes said they had borne the “brunt of people’s angst” who found the interruption a nuisance in recent years. “People used to come and watch the bridge going up and down; now eight minutes out of your day seems like the end of the world!” The new bridge spanning Clyde River will have at least two lanes open to road traffic in time for the Easter break this weekend, 2-5 April. Before the soon-to-be disassembled original bridge was built, the most common way to travel from shore to shore was by canoe, boat or punt ferry. Its opening was marked by a walking parade on 21 November 1956 – the day before the Melbourne Olympic Games. Newspapers reported a local baker, Edsel “Grubber” Ladmore, fashioned an Olympic torch from a piece of wood and a jam jar, not to be outdone by the following day’s fanfare.

The new Batemans Bay Bridge is open, making its 65-year-old predecessor obsolete. Image: Neil Greentree via Facebook.

Ms Innes recalled her family’s stories of the 1956 opening. “My Uncle Ian and his best friend stood there at the opening of the bridge, they were only 13 or something at the time. “He said as soon as they cut the ribbon, they sprinted across the bridge to be the first to cross it!” At peak construction, the contemporary project employed a workforce made up of 45% local and 1015% Indigenous people; 180 were working full-time. It was built using 2,700 tonnes of Australianmade reinforcing steel. Work to complete final touches will continue until late June 2021. - Rosa Ritchie Find an extended version of this story with historic photos at canberraweekly.com.au

Three months of suspicious door knocking in Weston Creek Since January, members of the Weston Creek community have posted publicly on social media to say they were shocked by loud knocking on the door before the sun rose, to find a visibly upset middle-aged man asking for money to help him travel to Sydney, where his daughter had been killed in a car accident. Community members who do not believe his oft-repeated story have shared updates in Facebook groups such as Weston Creek Neighbourhood Watch, detailing his behaviour, location and sharing photos identifying the alleged scammer. The individual is also known to approach shoppers in the Cooleman Court car park. When he knocked on the door of the Member for Murrumbidgee, Marisa Paterson MLA, she was fortunate to have been forewarned and reported it to police. “I was aware he was doing this – but it didn’t mean it didn’t give me a big fright,” Dr Paterson told Canberra Weekly. “I definitely think there’s a legitimate concern that older people who aren’t aware are being taken advantage of.” 8

canberraweekly.com.au

Weston Creek Community Council committee member Bill Gemmell shared a post on 26 March that alleged the doorknocker visited the home of a woman with dementia and “coerced her to hand over a large amount of cash”. “The issue is he’s preying on vulnerable people,” Mr Gemmell said. Dr Paterson said she had known of the individual for several years, and his behaviour should be considered a social welfare issue. “I’ve tried to talk to him, but I don’t get much; he goes straight into his story about why he needs money and we know these are just stories. “He needs support, so ‘How can we support him to stop this behaviour?’ is the ideal response.” Dr Paterson said she was engaging with the community and doing everything she could to resolve the issue. “I’m making representations to [Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman] on this issue, and I’m listening. I get it.” She said creating awareness was key, but the fact the alleged scammer could “hardly move

without it being reported on Facebook” was “a bit problematic as well”. ACT Policing Detective Inspector Mark Rowswell said it was important to discuss the issue with family and friends to ensure they were vigilant and knew what to look for. “If a person attends your house unexpectedly requesting money or offering services, be clear you are not interested and ask them to leave your property, or contact police on 131 444,” he said. “Don’t let the person inside your house.” On Tuesday 30 March, an ACT Policing spokesperson confirmed Police were aware of the individual. “Depending on the nature of the incident, asking for money based on a fake illness could be considered fraudulent behaviour or an act of public nuisance,” they said. Begging is not an offence in the ACT, according to Canberra Community Law. Information on how to identify scams and protect yourself is available at scamwatch.gov.au - Rosa Ritchie

AEIOU advertising moment AEIOU will open Canberra’s first early-learning autism hub in July to provide specialist early intervention programs for children with autism.

The AEIOU Canberra Region Centre will focus on providing evidence-based therapy and support services for children aged two to six.

AEIOU: Canberra’s first early-learning autism hub Specialising in autism-specific early intervention programs for children aged two to six, AEIOU Foundation is set to open its first centre in the Canberra Region this July. AEIOU’s Canberra Region Centre is made possible due a partnership with the John James Foundation, which is funding the construction of the purpose-built centre that forms part of the broader John James Village precinct. As a registered NDIS provider, AEIOU provides specialised childcare and therapy support to more than 300 children in Queensland and South Australia, with the Canberra Region Centre marking 11 centres for the not-for-profit organisation. AEIOU Canberra Region Manager, Enia Alberto, says as World Autism Awareness Day on 2 April approaches, it’s important to celebrate children diagnosed with autism. “They should be celebrated and

enjoyed like every other child for their diversity and strengths,” she says. “The important thing about autism is to embrace it and learn with it. It’s not something to be changed.” World Autism Awareness Day recognises those living with autism as well as those who love and support them. According to AEIOU, autism affects one in 100 people in Australia. While there is no known cause and no cure, research shows early intervention makes a difference to a child’s development, leading to improved outcomes for children with autism. Ms Alberto says while there are common characteristics of autism, it affects every child differently, so early

intervention and individual support for the child’s needs are core values of AEIOU. “The idea of the centre is to help children to lead their best life and to reach their potential. The program is tailored to the children,” she says. For those interested in learning the evidence behind AEIOU strategies and learning strategies to support children they care for at home or in a clinical setting, two free, tailored workshops will be hosted on two Tuesdays in April. Topics covered will include looking at functions of behaviour and the evidence behind AEIOU strategies, and identifying how play relates to communication, social,

gross motor skills and more. Ms Alberto says she is excited for the opening and the organisation is looking for potential employees to make a difference in a child’s life. “The centre will be opening in the beginning of July for the children, however, we are reaching out for potential employees and for those who have passion in the special needs field,” she says. Located in Garran, the new AEIOU centre will deliver early intervention for up to 40 children per year with capacity for research and training. news Anzac Hall shuts its doors, early works include demolition Anzac Hall, the Australian War Memorial’s exhibition space, closed on Sunday 28 March – possibly forever. Over the next three months, the collection items – including the popular “G for George” Avro Lancaster bomber and the Japanese midget submarine that raided Sydney in WWII – will be moved to the Memorial’s Treloar Conservation Centre in Mitchell. Memorial heads believe the 20-year-old, multimillion-dollar exhibition space has had its time – too small to cope with 900,000 more visitors each year, to tell stories of modern conflicts, to display planes and tanks. But there has also been heated opposition to the project. Now the Heritage Guardians, a group opposed to the redevelopment, are concerned that an application for early works includes knocking down the Hall. “We think it’s a three-card trick to get the thing underway as quickly as possible,” said spokesperson, Dr David Stephens. Knight Frank Town Planning lodged an application with the National Capital Authority (NCA) on 12 March to approve early works to

“adequately prepare” work sites. But the application also lists the demolition of Anzac Hall, the excavation of Anzac Parade, and cutting down eucalyptus trees. The Heritage Guardians argue these are not minor works at all. “They’re fundamental to the whole project, and yet they’re trying to sneak them through,” Dr Stephens said. “Once you’ve dug a hole out the front, and demolished Anzac Hall, there’s not much point having any further approvals for the project as a whole because you’ve got it underway already.” The NCA is the last hurdle the redevelopment must pass now that the Commonwealth Environment Minister the Hon. Sussan Ley and the Public Works Committee (two members, including ACT’s David Smith MP, opposing) have approved the Memorial’s plan. The Heritage Guardians are concerned that the early works could be approved before the NCA has given its approval to the redevelopment. The Memorial said no construction or destruction of Anzac Hall would begin before they received full approval from the NCA. “The early works application is for NCA approval,

and that work would not begin without approval in place,” a Memorial spokesperson said. An NCA spokesperson stated that the agency would assess the proposal in detail against the National Capital Plan (NCP) . “The current application under consideration by the NCA does not prejudice the NCA’s consideration of any future works approval applications.” The NCA has already approved new car parking, asbestos removal, and temporary structures for display, office use, or site compounds as part of the redevelopment. Dr Stephens believes the Memorial is trying to hurry through the works because it is well behind schedule, having, he said, spent months persuading the Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment and the Public Works Committee to agree to the project. The Memorial said there was no substance to Dr Stephens’s allegations; the early works had been planned since the beginning. The public can comment on the early works application by 30 April via the NCA website. - Nick Fuller

news MLAs unite A Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Working Group to co-ordinate the community, the service sector, unions and stakeholders on responses to sexual assault in the ACT was launched by Minister for Women, Yvette Berry, on Tuesday 30 March. “The treatment of women in workplaces and across the country is unacceptable,” Ms Berry said. “We demand a future in which women are treated with dignity and respect. It is a momentous time, and it is time to put survivors at the centre of how we respond to sexual assault.” She said the working group will be “inclusive and intersectional”, involving people with a disability, the LGBTIQ+ community, children and young people, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and migrants. In addition, Ms Berry said the working group must have a “gendered lens”, as 86.6% of (reported) victims of sexual assault in the ACT are women, according to ACT Policing figures. The working group will hold its first meeting in coming weeks. “Sexual assault and sexual violence requires a whole-of-

government response,” Ms Berry said. “All political parties are invited to be part of this work to ensure progress is made with a united front, and not caught up in party politics.” Canberra Liberals leader Elizabeth Lee welcomed more coordination among stakeholders. “The poison of endemic sexual harassment and assault is not an evil to be responded to in silos by separate government and community functions,” Ms Lee said. She thanked Ms Berry for her leadership and the swift government response to an issue that transcended politics, workplaces and communities. Many marginalised women – in multicultural or Indigenous communities, queer or disabled – could not challenge the status quo, the patriarchy, or systemic inequalities. Ms Berry invited ACT women to answer a Women’s Centre for Health Matters survey about seeking help for sexual assault. Data will identify gaps and recommend actions to government. - Nick Fuller Find an extended version of this story online at canberraweekly.com.au

To celebrate turning 50 this year, Belconnen High School is rounding up all their yearbooks as they approach the golden milestone. A call went out to the school community late last year to help complete the set, the effort led by passionate former principal, Dennis Flannery. “I went up to the school and started going through the boxes and boxes of archives, trying to make some sense of those,” he told Canberra Weekly. “Then I said really, we should

get a set of yearbooks, 1971 to 2020; they will tell a story. “The school had some, I had some, my kids had some … but we found we were about 20 short.” As of 30 March, there were still seven missing yearbooks. Mr Flannery even managed to acquire the school’s first yearbook from 1971, which he described as being “like gold”. - Jamila Toderas & Denholm Samaras Read the full story online at canberraweekly.com.au

news Australia’s first hydrogen cars and refuelling station Cars that make the air cleaner – that create less pollution the more they travel? They might sound like a science fiction paradox, but hydrogen cars have arrived in the ACT. The first 20 hydrogen vehicles registered in Australia became part of the ACT Government’s fleet this week, while Australia’s first publicly available hydrogen vehicle refuelling station officially opened last Friday in Fyshwick. The Hyundai NEXO is 100% clean, said Shane Rattenbury, ACT Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction. It produces nothing more than water out of the tailpipe, and the fuel is produced by 100% renewable energy. “This helps us not only tackle our transport emissions here in the ACT but puts the ACT at the forefront of new technologies,” Mr

Rattenbury said. An air filtering system cleans the air to 99.99%; it sucks all particulates and toxins out of the air, and replaces it with ‘pure freshness’, said Hyundai chief operating officer, John Kett. The average driver drives 13,000km each year; if the NEXO travels that distance, it will purify 21.6 tonnes of fresh air, while the ACT’s 20 vehicles will purify 432 tonnes, Mr Kett said. The fuelling station was built by renewable energy power producer, Neoen Australia, in partnership with ActewAGL. The NEXOs take five minutes to refuel and use 0.95kg of hydrogen per 100km. The hydrogen is produced on site. Electricity splits demineralised water into hydrogen and oxygen. The oxygen is released into the atmosphere, and the

hydrogen is stored, compressed, and pumped into the vehicle. While this is the only hydrogen fuelling station in Australia for now, other states have plans to build ones – some will produce up to 4.5 tonnes of hydrogen per day. As more fuelling stations are built, Mr Rattenbury and Mr Kett expected more vehicles on the road. 10,000 Hyundai NEXOs were sold in South Korea last year – and within a few years, they could be as popular in Australia. Mr Rattenbury envisages a

future where larger vehicles, ships, trains, trams and some smaller cars run on hydrogen, while the public drive electric cars. The price of hydrogen was falling, Mr Kett said; its parity to diesel and petrol was closing quickly. Now it was a question of infrastructure. He hoped the ACT hydrogen car fuelling station could stimulate discussion about commercial investment in hydrogen. - Nick Fuller

Milligan inherits Coe’s seat James Milligan, former Liberal member for Yerrabi, has returned to the ACT Legislative Assembly, filling the vacancy left by Alistair Coe’s departure. Mr Milligan was sworn in when the Assembly sat on Tuesday 30 March. Mr Milligan was elected in 2016, and was given the Shadow portfolios of Indigenous Affairs, and Sport and Recreation. He lost his seat in the last election, with 7.2% of first preferences (3,834 votes) in the Yerrabi electorate.

“I’m glad to be back here at the Assembly, and looking forward to what that may bring,” Mr Milligan said. “I am ready to hit the road running, and ready to get back out there, representing the people of Yerrabi and the ACT.” Mr Milligan’s re-election was announced on Thursday 25 March by ACT Electoral Commissioner Damian Cantwell AM. - Nick Fuller Find an extended version of this story online at canberraweekly.com.au

Bookfair back with a bang Lifeline Canberra’s first big bookfair since the COVID-19 pandemic took off with a bang, as thousands visited the COVIDsafe event held at Thoroughbred Park from 25 to 28 March. Lifeline Canberra CEO Carrie Leeson said the fourday fundraising event was “absolutely amazing” with the money raised going directly to the local Crisis Support Service, supporting approximately 20,000 phone calls. “The Northside bookfair is always our biggest bookfair, and we were so pleased to see the socially distanced queue at

the start of every day before the doors opened,” Ms Leeson said. She said that the funds raised through bookfairs make a significant difference to the Lifeline Canberra team. Since 2020, the telephone crisis supporters have seen a 40% increase in demand. “We anticipate we will receive over one million calls in this year alone,” Ms Leeson said. “This bookfair and the community is what keeps the service alive.” Lifeline Canberra continues to sell books via their Book Lovers Lane store at Fyshwick Markets, open Thursday to Sunday.

news Floating wetlands in Lake Tuggeranong Floating wetlands have been launched (literally) in Lake Tuggeranong in a two-year trial to clean up blue-green algae. The lake was closed in March after an extreme alert was issued for the algae, which can cause diarrhœa in humans and kill animals. The three floating wetlands are in the Village Creek embayment, Kambah, a key source of nutrients that feed algal blooms. “These floating wetlands will compete for both nutrients and light with the algae, and hopefully suppress the algae,”

said ACT Healthy Waterways program manager, Dr Ralph Ogden. Native plants grow through the wetlands into the water, feeding on the nutrients. This is the first large-scale deployment of floating wetlands in the ACT, but similar wetlands have been used worldwide. If successful, the wetlands will become a permanent fixture in Lake Tuggeranong. - Nick Fuller Find an extended version of this story with photos at canberraweekly.com.au

School to grow micro-forest The micro-forest movement is taking root in the ACT, planting seeds of ecological awareness in fertile young minds. Children at Majura Primary School are learning about the environment as they design their new classroom – outdoors. Come spring, 1,500 native plants will be planted in Wade Street Park, near the school. The area will contain a forest classroom for outdoor learning, Indigenous bushfood and an integrated nature playscape. The micro-forest is described as an urban sanctuary to combat climate change, strengthen community and reconnect people to nature. All the trees are native

plants that can cope with hot, dry temperatures. More than 80 children created dioramas and pictures to show what they imagined the micro-forest could look like. There were forests of feathers, tepees, firepits, ponds, koalas on roundabouts, and plesiosaurs frolicking in plasticine ponds. Landscape architect Edwina Robinson and Rebecca Vassarotti, ACT Minister for Environment, awarded prizes to the best designs on Wednesday 24 March. Ms Vassarotti said the ACT Government will look at ways to support micro-forest projects in Canberra.

Time to check smoke alarms The ACT Emergency Services Agency (ACTAS) is urging Canberrans to stay safe this winter and ensure their home has a working smoke alarm. Working smoke alarms are compulsory in the ACT and, according to ACTAS Commissioner Georgeina Whelan, they can mean the difference between life and death, especially as winter approaches.

According to ACT Fire and Rescue, electrical fires and faults cause 40% of house fires and a survey in 2020 revealed that nearly half (47%) of ACT residents do not test their devices as recommended. As daylight saving ends, changing the clock is a good reminder to check and replace smoke alarms. For more information, visit esa.act.gov.au

United seals finals spot Canberra United have secured a spot in the W-League finals for the first time in four years after a thrilling goalless draw with league leaders Sydney FC in Canberra on Friday 26 March. With chances at either end throughout the first half, it was the goalkeepers that stood out as both Keeley Richards (United) and Jada Whyman (Sydney) stood strong to keep the scores level at the break.

United came out firing in the second half and would throw everything at the visitors but have no luck getting past Whyman. The 0-0 draw was enough to keep United’s season alive, finishing fourth on the ladder. The W-League finals series will be played over the first two weekends in April, headlined by the grand final on Sunday 11 April. Visit w-league.com.au for details.

Easter treats

Gather the family in the kitchen, it’s Easter baking time! Food writer Libby Kimber has sourced some sweet Easter recipes to fill the long weekend as well as your tummy.

Fluffy bunny cake Cakes

Icing

375g butter, diced and softened

300g butter, diced and softened

1 1/2 cups caster sugar

5 cups icing sugar, sieved

6 extra large eggs

2 Tbsp lemon juice

3 tsp lemon rind, finely grated 2 tsp vanilla extract 3 cups plain flour 3 tsp McKenzie’s baking powder 1/4 tsp McKenzie’s bi-carb soda 3/4 cup buttermilk Decoration 1/4 cup McKenzie’s fine desiccated coconut 5 drops red food dye 100g white chocolate buttons Pink marshmallow, for decoration 2 cups McKenzie’s shredded coconut

Pre-heat oven to 180°C (160°C fan-forced). Line the base and sides of 2 20cm cake pans. place butter and sugar into the bowl of an electric mixer and beat until pale and creamy. Add eggs one at a time, mixing until well incorporated. Add lemon rind and vanilla. Add flour, baking powder and soda alternately with the milk, until well combined and the batter is smooth. Divide batter between prepared pans and bake for 50 minutes, or until an inserted skewer comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes in pans before removing to a cooling rack. Once cooled completely,

refrigerate covered until ready to decorate. For the ears, draw two rabbit ears on a piece of baking paper and set aside on a flat tray or surface. Combine desiccated coconut with food dye in a small bag and shake well until coconut is pink. Place chocolate buttons in a heat proof bowl over a saucepan of gently simmering water. Stir regularly until just melted. Spoon chocolate over the ears template, ensuring it’s thick enough to be able to handle once set. Sprinkle the inner ears with the pink coconut, then the outer ears with some of the shredded coconut. Dip one end of the marshmallow in melted chocolate, then into pink coconut. Refrigerate ears and nose until set. For icing, place the butter in a large mixing bowl. Beat with electric beaters until soft and creamy. Gradually add icing sugar and juice, mixing until smooth. For assembly, cut each cake into two. Place one layer onto a serving plate, spoon a little icing on top and spread out evenly. Top with the second layer and repeat the process until all layers are assembled. Cover cake with the remaining icing and sprinkle with the remaining shredded coconut. Make a small incision in the top of the cake with a knife where the ears will go. Gently press the bunny ears into the top of the cake and decorate with the bunny nose. Easter s’mores 1 packet (250g) milk arrowroot biscuits

500g milk chocolate, melted

2 Tbsp strawberry jam

2 Tbsp copha, melted

1 packet marshmallows (you’ll need 23 in total)

Sugar decorations and edible sprinkles

Preheat oven to 170°C (150° fan-forced). Line a baking tray with baking paper. Place 15 biscuits with flat side up onto the prepared baking tray. Spread each biscuit with 1/2 teaspoon jam and top with 1 1/2 marshmallows. Bake for 3 minutes or until marshmallows just begin to soften; remove from oven and cool slightly; sandwich with remaining biscuits (there will be one biscuit left over, which you can give to your little helper), press gently, ensuring filling doesn’t ooze out the side. Cool in the fridge for 15 minutes. Line another baking tray with baking paper. In a small bowl, mix together the chocolate and copha. Using two forks, dip biscuits into the mixture, allowing excess chocolate to drip away. Place onto the prepared tray. Allow to set. Pour remaining melted chocolate into a zip lock bag; snip the corner and pipe thin decorative shapes onto biscuits; sprinkle with decorations. Fish and Seafood Tips

• • • • • • •

24

• A firm bladder area is the best indicator of a fresh whole fish. Please note that contact with ice can dull the eyes of whole fish, even when very fresh. Fresh fish should have a pleasant fresh ocean smell. Never store fillets in direct contact with ice. Always remove packaging, cover and refrigerate. Cook and eat within two days. The firmness of uncooked prawns can be an indicator of freshness. However, some species are naturally softer than others. Uncooked prawns should be stored in a bowl of ice and water, in the fridge. The ice and water should be changed daily. Cook and eat within two days. Cooked prawns should be kept, covered, in the fridge. Eat within 2 days. Always defrost fish and seafood in a covered bowl, in the fridge. Cover Oysters and Smoked Trout with wet paper, then seal in a container or with wrap and refrigerate. Caution: Even ‘boneless’ fish may contain bones. Take care before eating and check carefully before feeding to children.

Strong Canberra contingent represented in Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize

An established artist with a scientific background, for local ceramics artist Cathy Franzi, the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize is the culmination of both her passions.

The highly commended artworks of three Canberra artists are now on display at the National Archives of Australia as part of the prestigious Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize exhibition. The biennial exhibition is developed by the South Australian Museum and showcases 68 of the Prize’s winning and highly commended entries. Canberra is the only city outside Adelaide where it is displayed. Local textile artist Rosie Armstrong, ceramics artist Cathy Franzi, and visual artist Lan Nguyenhoan’s works are exhibited amid a high-calibre field. Nguyen-hoan’s, Attempting to grasp water, comprises wide black and white cotton ribbons decorated with hammered titanium, speckled with brass and copper. Franzi’s Coast Banksia features ornate illustrations of the iconic plant, hand carved onto a porcelain vase. Armstrong’s A Requiem for Insects features laser cut and etched bamboo plywood depictions of 11 different species of insects at various stages of decay, pinned

across a black felt background. “It’s my interpretation of what disintegration and extinction looks like,” Armstrong told Canberra Weekly. The Archives’ director of public programs, Caroline Webber, said the variety between the works from the Canberra artists is indicative of the variety between all the finalists’ pieces. “As always, there are a range of works, and some are very detailed and some are very big,” she said. “The reactions of people, it’s been interesting who likes what.” The exhibition last showed in Canberra in 2018; the 2020 iteration was postponed due to complications surrounding COVID-19. It was displayed at the South Australian Museum, Adelaide, from 11 December 2020 until earlier this month, before travelling to Canberra. Armstrong, whose entry was highly commended in the emerging finalists category, told Canberra Weekly each of the 11 species depicted in her work is on Australia’s threatened species list. The piece was completed two years ago as her ANU Bachelor of Visual Arts third-year work. “These things are disappearing,”

Textile artist Rosie Armstrong’s work, A Requiem for Insects, features plywood depictions of 11 different species of insects at various stages of decay, pinned across a black felt background.

she said. “If insects disappear, our ecosystem faces such problems, because although we don’t see them they play such an integral part.” While acquiring a list of endangered species initially proved challenging for Armstrong, her mother, who runs environmental peak body, ACT for Bees, was able to send her down the right path. “It was really hard to find what insects are endangered, but once you get onto the right lists, it was useful and helpful,” she said. An ornate work comprised of nearly 200 pieces, transporting Armstrong’s piece between Canberra and Adelaide was practical to pack down and tedious to set up. The felt backdrop rolls up around a tube containing all the plywood pieces. That’s then packed into another long tube. White dots across the felt backdrop mark where each insect piece belongs for reassembly. “It’s not the easiest thing to install, it’s very time consuming,” she said.

Prize a ‘bridge between science and art’ An established artist with a scientific background, for Franzi, the Waterhouse is the culmination of both her passions. “That science/art relationship is really important to me in my work, so to get into the Waterhouse, which is all about art and science, is a great honour,” she said. Having practised her art for 25 years, Franzi commenced her Master of Visual Art in 2010 and followed that with her PhD of Visual Art Ceramics. She said it was while studying that she developed the ability to further channel her scientific knowledge through her art. “It was during those times of study that I developed to this work,” she said. “It’s really combining those two things that feels really right for me.” Franzi also volunteers with the National Seedbank at the Australian National Botanic Gardens, which sees her being directly involved in fieldwork. “I do work with scientists, I am often involved in projects where I am out in the field with scientists to understand what’s really going on with the environment to inform what’s going on in my work,” she said. Franzi said Canberra has a “fantastic ecosystem” of artists, cultural institutions and local support. “It’s a little bit quiet I think; Canberra’s still only just being known for the arts, but it’s a really incredible environment to be in,” she said. All three Canberra artists will be giving floor talks at the Archives throughout May. Now showing Godzilla vs. Kong (M) Five years after Godzilla become King of the Monsters, the Monarch agency watches over Kong, keeping him hidden from Godzilla under a giant dome on Kong Island. Apex executive Walter Simmons (Demián Bichir) recruits Nathan Lind (Alexander Skarsgård), a former Monarch geologist turned theorist on the Hollow Earth theory, as a guide in search of a new power source. Nathan visits Kong’s watcher, Monarch anthropological linguist Dr Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall), to get Kong to guide them through the Hollow Earth. Soon, however, Godzilla emerges from the ocean to randomly attack an Apex facility! The first onscreen monster crossover was 1943’s Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man, which set off Universal’s monsters battling

throughout the decades. Major comic book labels DC and Marvel would cross their precious intellectual properties, making sure that their status remained unsullied to the point of a predictable story template: a misunderstanding leads to a tussle, and an eventual team-up against a late-comer third party. This template was even used for the title of 2016’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. While the battles between our titans are great comic-booky fun, too much time and effort is given to an unnecessarily convoluted plot with a large cast of thin characters working overtime to spout exposition just to set up our beasties. Verdict: Great fun for fans of kaiju bash-ups; however, a cleaner, leaner plot would have given our stars even more opportunity to shine. 2.5 stars. Godzilla vs. Kong is screening at Palace and Dendy Cinemas. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

Book talk

Jeff Popple reviews three books to keep you entertained over the Easter eggstra-long weekend. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com

Today I F****d Up by Thomas Mitchell

Win by Harlan Coben

Simon & Schuster, $24.99

Century, $32.99

This amusing collection of anecdotes is a fun book to dip into over the Easter weekend, in between eating chocolate, religious observances and catching up with family and friends. Inspired by his own personal disasters – including one involving his girlfriend’s grandparents, a crashed ute, an angry wasp and a farmer with a shotgun – Mitchell has collected a bunch of tales from his friends about their ‘worst day’ experiences. The stories range from the hilarious to the truly horrifying, with Steph’s story about an ill-timed moment of passion probably being the most cringe-worthy of them. A fantastic collection that will keep you smiling all weekend long.

Harlan Coben is a master entertainer, and his novels are deservedly worldwide bestsellers. His latest has a typically twisted plot that sees the titular character, Windsor Horne Lockwood III (Win), caught up in two intersecting storylines. The first concerns the ramifications of a brutal act of vigilante justice and the second a decades old mystery involving a stolen piece of artwork, the kidnapping of Win’s cousin and an act of domestic terrorism from the early 1970s. Coben is an adept proponent of the unexpected revelation, and Win delivers plenty of surprises and a few shocks as it races to an exciting conclusion. A great long weekend read.

How to Train Your Dog by Jen and Ryan Tate Ebury, $34.99

For dog owners who want to make good use of the extra time over Easter, Jen and Ryan Tate’s How to Train Your Dog is an excellent starting point for those who want to develop a more enjoyable bond with their pets. fitness If you haven’t skipped in years, that’s okay! Start simple and you can increase the intensity as you go. Here are some top skip tips to prepare your body to get jumping: • Warm up! Go for a five-minute walk to get your legs moving. • Stretch your calves: stand on a step with your heels off the edge and drop one heel, hold for 30 seconds and switch legs. • Balance on one leg for 30 seconds, then swap. Repeat this four times. • Stretch your Achilles: start in a calf stretch position then bend your knee – you should feel this below your calf. Hold for 30 seconds on each leg. • Balance practice: placing your hand on a wall, close your eyes and do 10 hops on one leg. Repeat on the other. • 5 x 20 calf raises: stand flat on the floor, rise onto your toes and then lower back down.

Hopping into Easter As we get into the Easter spirit, we will be hopping and bouncing around with all that extra energy from lots of chocolate! Speaking of hopping and bouncing, did you know that skipping is a great addition to your workouts? It can help you with cardio, endurance, balance, coordination and power! It’s also a great option for anyone who is

short on time. It can be a quick session, and you can ratchet up the intensity or extend the duration. My kids love this style of exercise as they can go as hard as they like and burn off lots of energy! It’s also great if you’re just starting out with working out, as you can go at your own pace and work on your overall fitness, body balance and position.

Treat the cause of your condition, not just the symptoms.

Easter egg-citement Easter is just a hop away so why not entertain the kids with some Easter themed projects? Pull out your bunny ears and try these two activities for some egg-cellent fun. WITH HOME EDITOR, ERIN CROSS

DIY Easter basket

Bunny faces

Project by Zoe Gilpin @thediydecorator

Project by Bunnings; bunnings.com.au

What you need • Assorted baskets • Gorilla Glue spray adhesive • Decorative shredded paper

• • • •

Gorilla Glue clear grip Decorative coloured rope Various Easter themed decorations Assorted faux florals and foliage

Instructions 1. Give the inside of your basket a generous coat of Gorilla Glue spray adhesive. Allow it to get tacky and then add in your shredded paper. This will help keep it in place. 2. Using Gorilla Glue clear grip, add on the chosen decorations to the basket. 3. Add rope to the handle, Easter themed decorations and foliage around the rim or outside of the basket. 4. Build up layers by adding larger decorations followed by smaller ones, finishing with foliage. Faux is a great option for this project but you could also use dried florals as well. Tip: Picking up some super cheap baskets for just a few dollars each from a secondhand store works great for this project and keeps it inexpensive! Use any size, shape, style of basket you can get your hands on.

What you need • Scissors • Foam craft sheets • PVA glue

• • •

White paper cups Fine black permanent marker pen Pipe cleaners

Instructions 1. Cut out bunny ear shapes from the foam and stick onto the inside of the paper cups with glue. Using a fine marker pen, draw bunny faces onto the cups under the ears. 2. Using scissors, cut pipe cleaners to desired length of whiskers (we got three whiskers from one pipe cleaner). Using the sharp tip of the scissors, poke two small holes into each cheek of the bunny faces. 3. Push pipe cleaner whiskers into each hole, bending the ends on the inside of the cups to hold them in place.

Safety tip! Always supervise littlies when projects require the use of scissors, sharp items or hot water.

Weekly market wrap Will Canberra’s median house price hit $1 million?

A median house price exceeding $1,000,000 in Canberra appears to be a forgone conclusion, with the only debatable point being the timing of when. CoreLogic has reported Canberra’s auction clearance rate was 86.3%, which was the second highest nationally, achieving a median sale price of $938,650 for houses. During growth cycles, the median sale price at auction is persistently higher than the reported median dwelling prices as auction results are a live indicator of how buyers and vendors perceive market conditions. With clearance rates consistently above 80%, often above 90%, and suburb record sale prices tumbling across Canberra, it’s only a matter of time before Canberra’s median house price exceeds $1,000,000.

Stamp duty concessions to buoy off-plan market The Federal Government’s recently concluded HomeBuilder scheme has undoubtedly increased off-plan sales volume across Canberra. During the last couple of weeks approaching the conclusion of the scheme, clients and colleagues have asked if I expect sales volume to fall significantly. From today (1 April), I anticipate the $0 stamp duty payable on purchases up to $500,000 or stamp duty discounted by $11,400 on purchases up to $750,000 for owner occupiers in the ACT until 30 June will continue to drive transaction volume. Across the portfolio of off-plan projects I work on, investor enquiry has increased significantly during the past six months. Interstate investors perceive property prices and rental yields in Canberra as value compared to other capital cities. The ability to exchange contracts on a 5% cash deposit and lock in exposure to an upward market cycle of increasing apartment and townhouse values and rents is quite attractive; especially when hedged on the basis that if neither increases, investors can access historically low interest rates to settle and Canberra’s rental market is described by the media as in a state of crisis due to lack of available stock. In the off-plan market, those who invest in quality stock early in the release program and can be patient to

WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST

wait for delivery, are generating robust returns. During the first quarter of 2021, there were many instances where those who bought in late December had comparable or inferior properties to what they exchanged on sell for over 5% more than their contract price. Developers, however, face the dilemma of accelerating their pipeline to market now and take advantage of current conditions or hold out for potentially higher prices and risk Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) introducing macroprudential controls, which may temper buyer demand and soften market conditions. At this stage, APRA have made it clear they do not see any indication of deteriorating lending standards that would warrant their intervention. With this in mind, conditions between April and September appear favourable to launch new projects. Editor’s note: Sam Dodimead is the listing agent for a number of developments where off-plan purchases can be made.

celebrity birthday DAVID OYELOWO 1 April 1976 The next 12 months for David is a time for being more self-sufficient and ready to take a chance. All opportunities should be snapped up after careful consideration. There will be a lot of fresh faces in David’s life, and he will be given the chance to start again in many areas of his life. It is crucial that he be prepared to go it alone and to stand aside from likeminded others. This is the time to push back horizons and open his mind to new experiences.

in the stars ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR

CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY

LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT

CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN

Happy birthday Aries! You have a renewed self-confidence and energy. Rather than sit around waiting for things to happen, you will want to speed up your life. However, your ability to put your foot in your mouth is not going to help you win friends and influence people.

Although it will help to discuss

Whether you’re warming up a new relationship or reheating an old one, the planets are going to help you to get things going in the right direction. So, grab the chance to turn over a new leaf with someone you know very well and possibly woo them all over again.

You may come up with a sensible way of increasing the value of your home and this may set you off on a course of building or renovating, be it major or minor. Any ideas of this kind could come from an acquaintance or from an unusual source.

SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV

Your curiosity is massively stimulated as Mercury activates the area of your chart devoted to communication. Other people’s business suddenly becomes your own. That’s not to say that you become a busy body, it’s just that many will turn to you for guidance or advice.

TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY You’re going to have to be careful of what you say, in case you reveal something you’ve been trying to keep secret. Anything that has been previously swept under the carpet to keep it hidden from others will soon come to light, so expect some embarrassing revelations any time soon.

GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE Your social life is about to gain momentum and friends will keep you busy. You’ll take a great deal of comfort and pleasure from being with people who are kindred spirits. You are intrigued by how other people’s minds work; they’re being very inventive, and it’s got you intrigued.

your plans with others, learn to use discretion in all your dealings. This is the perfect time for pushing ahead with a brand-new venture as you will get all the support you need and a new business contact will be very helpful.

LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG The focus is on higher education, foreign affairs, and long-distance travel. Possibly some of you are off on an early holiday and others may be booking a holiday for later in the year. If you are studying, you should not have any difficulty passing exams.

VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT Be wary of power struggles coming from within your family. It appears someone is desperate to assert their independence and they won’t care how they go about it. If you put your foot down, this situation could erupt into a full-blown row.

The planets are focusing on your working life and indicate a time to call a halt to any activity that isn’t bringing you sufficient satisfaction. If your health is troubling you, it’s time to get the problem resolved once and for all. Ignoring the situation won’t make it go away.

SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC You are in the mood for fun and shopping and the thought of going to the sales and picking up a few bargains is almost impossible to resist. The trouble is that you could wind up spending more than you intended, but at least you will have a good time.

AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB

PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR Financial prospects take an upturn as Mercury enters your house of fi nances. The next month should see an improvement in your economic security. You may need to lay plans to ensure maximum profit, so don’t expect any swift returns for investments but lay down a pattern for future growth.
