This week... From the editor I was vexed (yet relieved) on Good Friday morning to hear police had nabbed a male driver in his 60s speeding at over 190km/h in an 80km zone on Yarra Glen. Who do these drivers think they are to flout the law so shamelessly, potentially putting innocent lives at risk? It must be exceptionally frustrating for police and emergency services, who are left to clean up the mess when dangerous driving results in death or injury. Please drive and ride safely. In this edition, Canberra Weekly is pleased to reintroduce a weekly political column and welcome former ACT Chief Minister and ACT Senator, Gary Humphries AO, to the team. With his extensive knowledge of and first-hand experience in local and federal politics, Mr Humphries will be sharing his insights and analysis with us regularly. Reasons to be grateful this past week include glorious autumn weather across the four-day Easter break, being part of a sell-out 100% capacity crowd at Canberra Theatre for A Taste of Ireland on Saturday night, partaking of Sage Dining Room’s delicious ‘Taste & Test’ degustation experience last Thursday night under new chef James Viles, bushwalking with friends at Tidbinbilla on Monday, a lakeside walk on Saturday, an office visit of shelter puppies from RSPCA ACT, and a scintillating night of live music by the Canberra Symphony Orchestra shared with friends. - Julie Samaras

news Parties find common ground on forensic sexual assault services The ACT Legislative Assembly has once more united on sexual assault. Following last week’s tripartisan support for a working group, there was unanimous support the next day for Liberal deputy leader Giulia Jones’s motion to ensure the public knew what to do and who to call after sexual assault, and that a forensic sampling service and support workers were available all the time. Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith (Labor) and Greens Health spokesman Johnathan Davis amended the motion, following “good-natured”, “constructive” discussions. “We are a good Chamber, and though we have different recipes, there is a lot of desire here to see improvements for the people of the ACT,” Mrs Jones said. “Sometimes we can, and we should, and we will, work together.” Women comprise 86.6% of sexual assault victims in the ACT, Mrs Jones noted, but nine in 10 victims do not inform the police. Fewer than a third of complaints lead to legal action. Although the number of complaints made has increased, the number of trials has more than halved in the last five years. Gathering DNA evidence is necessary to
make prosecution and trials more likely, she said. “Justice for victims of sexual assault may not occur instantly, but without this evidence … convictions are very difficult. Victims, survivors go on suffering while their perpetrators walk away and go on often to assault further people and inflict additional harm.” Canberra’s forensic sample collection service, Forensic and Medical Sexual Assault Care (FAMSAC), operates out of the Canberra Hospital, and also services Calvary Hospital. Mrs Jones was concerned that because sexual assault victims had to give consent, people with alcohol in their system may have to wait hours, unable to eat, wash, or change their clothes – which can worsen trauma. She believed a mobile FAMSAC service, attending victims in homes, workplaces, or other public places, would make the process smoother. Ms Stephen-Smith said that hospital was the best place, as DNA samples could be contaminated outside hospital. However, she would revisit the matter. The Canberra Rape Crisis Centre – “the best
option for immediate aftermath counselling” (Mrs Jones) – has a support person available from 7am to 11pm each day. Mrs Jones said she understood the service was once funded to be 24 hours a day; she would like two counsellors available all the time. “The Canberra Rape Crisis service cannot completely be available for those in this city if they cannot get to those who need them 24/7.” Mrs Jones also called for a single point of contact phone number for sexual assault. Ms Stephen-Smith noted that ACT Government websites listed different telephone numbers, and that FAMSAC had different business and after-hours numbers. The ACT Health Directorate is reviewing this matter. Also concerned about low prosecution rates, Mr Davis proposed that resourcing for and developing specialist expertise within the police’s sexual assault and child abuse team should be adequate. The Government will report back to the Assembly on these matters in August. - Nick Fuller
Release of feral horses ‘makes a mockery’ of NSW commitment News that one third of all feral horses trapped in Kosciuszko National Park since July 2020 have been released by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has outraged members of the ACT Government. ACT Minister for Land Management Mick Gentleman said the NSW Government needed to “come to the table” with a stronger management plan, consistent with those in ACT and Victoria. “Releasing feral horses back into Kosciuszko National Park makes a mockery of the NSW Government’s recent commitment to reducing numbers, and underscores how unrealistic and ineffective trapping and rehoming methods are,” he said. There are over 14,000 feral horses across Kosciuszko National Park, according to a spring 2020 population survey by NPWS. A NPWS spokesperson said 767 horses were trapped in Kosciuszko National Park from 1 July 2020 to 26 March 2021. Of those, 484 were removed from the Park 96% of which have been rehomed. But 279 feral horses were not removed from the Park. Instead, they were set free. “They were released from trap yards in the 4

Park for welfare reasons, including heavily pregnant mares and young foals which are not fit for transport,” the NPWS spokesperson said. “The approach to trapping reflects a commitment to reducing horse numbers while maintaining the highest possible welfare standards.” In 2018, the NSW Government passed an Act to recognise and protect “wild horse heritage values”, while enabling active management of their population to reduce their impact on “the Park’s fragile environment”. In 2020, the ACT Government released a feral horse management plan that proposed population control methods including ground and aerial shooting, “humane destruction on site” and “fertility treatments” on feral horses, were the NSW population to pass ACT borders. Invasive Species Council CEO Andrew Cox said the NSW Government was “failing dismally to stop the spread of feral horses on their side of the border”. Mr Cox praised the Victorian Government’s new feral horse action plan, which he said followed in the footsteps of the ACT Government’s zero-tolerance position on feral horses and left NSW “in the dark ages”.
There is “significant opportunity” for feral horses to enter Namadgi National Park from neighbouring Kosciuszko National Park, according to the ACT Government.
There is “significant opportunity” for feral horses to enter Namadgi National Park, according to the ACT Government’s management plan. It found local drinking water, threatened species, heritage sites with significance to Ngunnawal people, and endangered wetlands would be at risk if feral horses expanded their territory to include Namadgi. ACT Minister for the Environment Rebecca Vassarotti said it was time for the NSW Government to “stop protecting destructive feral horses at the expense of our environment and unique biodiversity”. A new draft feral horse management plan is set to be released by NSW Government before July 2021. - Rosa Ritchie

Canberra Liberals clawing out of the grave It’s six months since the October 2020 ACT election and the humiliating defeat handed to the Canberra Liberals. The electorate delivered them their sixth successive election loss, rubbing salt into the wound by throwing in a 3% swing against them after nearly 20 years in opposition. Right now, the Liberals are taking stock. As they must; with so much ground to make up, the foundations for a win in 2024 must be laid now, not in the weeks leading up to the next election. The size of the challenge can be measured with a few statistics. The Canberra Liberals are by far the most unsuccessful branch of a major party in the nation. In the last 20 years, there have been changes of government in every state and territory and federally – in some cases two – but not in
6

Canberra. Not one government MLA in our Legislative Assembly has spent even a day in opposition, and not one opposition MLA has spent a day in government. This is desperately sad for the Liberal Party. But it is also sad for everyone interested in an efficiently run territory. Benjamin Disraeli once said that “No government can long be secure without a formidable opposition”. It’s in all our interests that oppositions be able to threaten governments when elections come around, to keep them on their toes. New opposition leader Elizabeth Lee has allowed the Liberal Party to hit the reset button. Canberrans who associate “Liberal” with middle-aged men in suits are having a double take when they see this young, articulate, Asian-born lawyer. Boosting her chances at the
2024 election will be the “It’s Time” factor (in fact, the 23 years the Liberals will have been opposition by then will match, almost to the day, the 23 years of Labor’s opposition that Whitlam ended in 1972). But an appealing new salesperson taking on a government with cobwebs will not be enough, by itself, to ensure a conservative victory. This is because citizens of Canberra live in the shadow of the House on the Hill; they talk politics in the washroom and the supermarket queue the way other Australians talk about football and the weather. They have highly-attuned political antennae and look for substance and detail when listening to politicians. And so, Lee will need policies in 2024 that speak convincingly to
WITH GARY HUMPHRIES AO, FORMER ACT CHIEF MINISTER AND ACT SENATOR
the values of Canberra citizens, values that are conspicuously more progressive than those found in residents of other states. The Liberal message of 2020 was about the cost of living, but Canberra people also care about other things: government intervention to ensure “fairness”, infrastructure spending, respect for minorities, and action on climate change. She will also need to contend with an ACT Labor government with survival skills not matched by its sister branches elsewhere. One device which I predict it will deploy to survive in this term: hitting its own reset button by moving on Andrew Barr and promoting a woman in his place.

news MLAs unite to support Territory rights In a rare show of cross-party cooperation, ACT Labor, Green, and Liberal politicians unanimously moved last week that the Federal Government restore Territory rights so the ACT can vote on voluntary assisted dying (euthanasia). Tara Cheyne, Minister for Human Rights (Labor), Attorney-General Shane Rattenbury (Greens), and Canberra Liberals leader Elizabeth Lee called on the Federal Government to introduce and bring on for debate a bill to remove passages in the ACT (Self-Government) Act 1988 that prevent the ACT from passing laws permitting euthanasia. These passages were introduced 24 years ago, through the Euthanasia Laws Act 1997 (the ‘Andrews Bill’), which also prevents the NT from legislating on euthanasia. Ms Cheyne called the Andrews Bill “cruel, needless, senseless legislation
… which restricted our democratic freedoms; our democratic rights”. Ten million Australians can access euthanasia, Ms Cheyne said. Voluntary assisted dying is now legal in Victoria, WA and Tasmania. Other states are debating or will debate euthanasia legislation this year. “Through their parliaments, the vast majority of Australians will be able to participate in this important democratic process, simply by virtue of living in a state,” Ms Cheyne said. “But not citizens of the ACT. And not citizens of the Northern Territory.” Mr Rattenbury called the situation “farcical”. The Federal Government had taken back legislature powers it granted the ACT at self-government, allowing it to legislate on everything except euthanasia: “One of the most important issues in their lives: the manner of their own death, their health and dignity, and that of their
families and loved ones.” He argued that the imposed restriction on the Territories’ independence was “simply the exercise of political power by people in Federal Parliament who either oppose voluntary euthanasia, or who are too scared of any political risk associated with supporting euthanasia. … They make a mockery of self-government, and they tell ACT citizens that they are second-class citizens, and less worthy than people living in the Australian states.” Ms Lee agreed that the ACT Legislative Assembly should have the right to legislate on this matter on behalf of Canberrans, just as it had the right to legislate on other matters dealt with by State and Local Governments across Australia. Comparing euthanasia to gay marriage, Chief Minister Andrew Barr said that change was inevitable; social

reform was difficult in Australia, but took the work of many good people. Ms Lee said euthanasia would be a conscience vote for her party. “The issue … is not an easy one. The Canberra Liberals acknowledge and respect the very diverse views on voluntary assisted dying in the ACT community.” Ms Cheyne noted that the Federal Government has only once allowed the Bill to come on for debate by the Senate, in 2018. Although many Liberals voted against the motion – including ACT Senator Zed Seselja – so, the Canberra Liberals pointed out, did seven Federal Labor senators. Senator Seselja has said he was open to discussing Territory rights, but not if put in the context of euthanasia. Ms Lee said she had raised the matter with the Prime Minister and would continue to do so. - Nick Fuller

news Six individuals and one group were celebrated for their efforts to make Canberra a better place at the Young Canberra Citizen of the Year Awards on Thursday 1 April. ACT Minister for Education and Youth Affairs, Yvette Berry, announced Women with Disabilities ACT (WWDACT) CEO Kat Reed the overall winner for their work across community services and the arts, and their distinguished service to the LGBTIQ+ community. Ms Berry said Mx Reed’s success at WWDACT demonstrated that young people can shine in high-level executive roles in the community sector. “Mx Reed’s openness regarding their disability, being part of the LGBTIQ+ community and their background as a biracial person has created positive
representation and shown that other young people like them can excel in leadership roles,” she said. Mx Reed was appointed leader of the local advocacy and peer support organisation for women, girls, feminine-identifying and non-binary people with disability in November 2020. In January, Mx Reed told Canberra Weekly their lived experience with mental health led to their involvement in disability advocacy. “At the moment, people who are disabled aren’t seen as people who can lead,” Mx Reed said. “It’s one of those weird dichotomies where we’re seen as inspirational but also not qualified to be in positions of leadership in conventional ways.” At WWDACT, Mx Reed works to create a supportive community
and develop policy to end systemic disadvantage caused by discrimination based on gender and disability. The Young Canberra Citizen of the Year Awards acknowledge people aged between 12 and 25 who make a significant contribution to their communities. The full list of 2021 winners is as follows: Young Canberra Citizen of the Year: Mx Kat Reed; Young Achiever Award: Miss Skyler Pope; Personal Achievement Award: Mr Jacob Norris; Individual Community Service Award: Mr Jahin Tanvir; Environment and Sustainability Award: Mr Ngalan Gilbert; Arts and Multimedia Award: Mr Alexander Ding Wang; and Group Achievement Award: Kingsford Smith School Imaging Team. ACT road use ‘good and bad’ over Easter break Unfortunately, the detection of 41 unregistered vehicles, 167 speeders, four drink drivers, and eight drug drivers represented a pretty “standard” Easter long weekend for ACT Policing. With the “good news” being that no one was fatally harmed, police were concerned by the number of instances of illegal driving detected over the Easter break, from Thursday 1 to Monday 5 April. “The best news was that no one died on our roads, again,” ACT Policing Detective Sergeant Bill Evans said. Of the 167 motorists caught speeding, 14 were exceeding the limit by more than 30km/h. “A driver was detected travelling 194km/h in an 80 zone on Yarra Glen … that’s just ridiculous,” Detective Sergeant Evans said. “Another driver detected travelling at 172km/h in an 80 zone on the Monaro Highway … 107km/h in a 60 zone on Caswell Drive. “If you want to be selfish and do your own thing, go to a racetrack.” Detective Sergeant Evans said the bulk of the speeding took place along Canberra’s major roads. “Main arterials are always a problem,” he said. “With lighter
traffic, people tend to boost it a bit more, go a bit faster because they think there’s no one around.” Additionally, 41 unregistered vehicles were detected, of which 29 had no compulsory third party insurance, a “concerning” result for Detective Sergeant Evans. A total of 68 drug screening tests were administered with eight returning a positive result for a prescribed drug. “Since we introduced random drug testing, that’s skyrocketed a bit … mainly meth, that’s the main drug of choice for people who choose to drive,” Detective Sergeant Evans said. Of 1,862 random breath tests conducted, four tested positive; one returning a blood alcohol content reading of 0.159, more than three times the legal limit. “That’s a good result given the number of tests conducted, but it’s still four too many.” According to ACT Policing, such results are “quite similar” to Easter long weekends of previous years. “Most drivers are doing the right thing, but we are sharing our roads with some people who really just don’t get it.” - Denholm Samaras
Plans to grow urban canopy The ACT Government will plant almost half a million trees over the next quarter-century to ensure Canberra remains the bush capital, the Urban Forest Strategy 2021–2045, released on 30 March, revealed. In 2015, forest canopy covered 19% of the ACT’s urban area, but the ACT Government wants to increase canopy to 30% by 2045. In the fifth large-scale tree planting in Canberra’s history, more than 450,000 trees will be planted on public land over the next 25 years, 25,000 by 2023, and 9,000 this year alone, Minister for City Services 12
canberraweekly.com.au
Chris Steel said. However, according to a Conservation Council/Monash University report, Canberra had the worst decline in green infrastructure of any Australian capital city: from 60% in 2013 to 35% last year. Leanne Castley, Shadow Minister for the Environment, accused the Labor-Greens Government of being “all talk and no action”, saying “the significant reduction in urban vegetation across the ACT since 2013” has occurred under their watch. Grove celebrates Golden Wattle The largest planting of Australia’s floral emblem, the Golden Wattle, has taken place to belatedly celebrate the 50th birthday of the Australian National Botanic Gardens. Hand grown by members of the Wattle Day Association, 40 Golden Wattles were planted in a grove in the Acacia Garden, joining 10 that were originally planted at the end of 2020. Scientifically known as Acacia pycnantha, the Golden Wattle was officially proclaimed the floral emblem of Australia in 1988. President of the Wattle Day Association, Dr Suzette Searle, said that all wattles are the perfect symbol for Australia and Australians. “When the 50th anniversary came up for the Botanic Gardens, we thought what a wonderful gift it
would be, the Golden Wattle for the golden anniversary,” she said. “We were going to give them 50 Golden Wattles … In fact, they want 100 here.” Dr Searle said the wattle has been a significant cultural symbol of Australia for more than a century. “Golden Wattle has been symbol of Australia for more than a century from when it first appeared in a stylised form on our Commonwealth Coat of Arms in 1912 … Wattles are on our banknotes, wattles are appearing more frequently on our coins, wattles were the inspiration for the Order of Australia. “It’s bit like it is in the bush; you don’t really realise it’s there until it springs forth in blossom.” - Erin Cross Find an extended version of this story and photos at canberraweekly.com.au

sport Injured Giants fall to Demons at Manuka The GWS Giants’ tough start to the AFL season continued with injuries compounding their 34-point loss to the Melbourne Demons at Manuka Oval on Sunday night, 4 April. Stephen Coniglio, Phil Davis and Matt de Boer finished the game in tracksuits as their teammates struggled late in the 15.12 (102) to 11.2 (68) loss.
Injury struck in the second quarter with Davis and Coniglio going down as the Demons took control. Greene was the standout for the Giants, kicking five goals in a tough night for the club. The winless Giants will return to Manuka Oval in round 6 to play the Western Bulldogs on Friday 23 April.

An outstanding defensive performance from the Canberra Raiders led them to a gritty 20-4 victory over the Gold Coast Titans at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Saturday night, 3 April. The Raiders produced three try-saving tackles in the first half and shut down the Titans’ attacking threats all night to seal their third win of the season. Jordan Rapana scored first for
the Raiders after a beautiful flick pass from Jarrod Croker to help build an 8-4 lead at half time. Josh Papalii crashed over early in the second half to extend Canberra’s lead before Ryan Sutton put the finishing touches on the victory. The Raiders now head to Penrith to take on the Panthers on Friday night, 9 April. - Vincent Samaras
United’s season over Canberra United’s season is over after a gallant 3-0 loss to Sydney FC in their Semi Final at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium on Monday 5 April. United dominated possession and had more shots than the premiers, but Sydney finished their chances to book their fourth straight Grand Final appearance. Canberra started fast and put
Sydney under pressure in the opening exchanges with a shot on goal inside 30 seconds. Sydney scored their first goal in the 15th minute thanks to a right foot volley from Mackenzie Hawkesby. Clare Wheeler and Ally Green scored second half goals to seal the Sky Blues spot in the decider.

The Brumbies have come away with a hard fought 24-22 win after a tense clash against the NSW Waratahs at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Friday night, 2 April. Waratahs flyhalf Will Harrison had a kick to level things after the final hooter but couldn’t find the mark, a gutsy effort from the home side falling just short.
The Brumbies scored all their points in a terrific first half to lead it 24-10 at the break. The winless Waratahs dug deep in the second half and almost pulled off the upset of the season in a nail-biting clash. The Brumbies will take the victory into their top-of-the-table clash against the Queensland Reds in Brisbane in round eight.

Potatoes boulangère Serves 4 50 g butter, plus extra for greasing 1 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil 3 onions, finely sliced Salt flakes and freshly ground black pepper 3 garlic cloves, finely sliced 1L chicken or vegetable stock 6 desiree potatoes (about 1.2 kg) 1 small handful of thyme, leaves picked 2 Tbsp finely grated parmesan Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease a 2-litre baking dish with butter. Heat the butter and olive oil in a sauté pan over high heat. Add the onion and a pinch of salt, cover and cook for 5 minutes. Stir through the garlic. Turn the heat down to low, cover and cook, stirring every 5 minutes, for 25 minutes. Remove the lid and cook, stirring regularly, for a further 10 minutes, or until the onion is softened. Transfer to a bowl. Add the stock to the pan, bring to the boil and cook for 8–10 minutes until reduced by one-third. Meanwhile, cut the potatoes into 1mm thick slices, or as finely as you can. Alternatively, slice on a mandoline. Arrange two layers of the potato slices in the base of the prepared dish, allowing them to overlap slightly. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper. Now add half of the onion, spreading it out evenly, then scatter over half of the thyme. Repeat the process with the remaining potato, onion and thyme, ensuring the last layer is potato. Press down lightly to compress. Little by little add the hot stock so it has time to trickle into the gaps. Sprinkle over the parmesan, cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for a further 20–30 minutes until the potato is golden brown and meltingly tender. Test this by piercing the centre of the gratin with a sharp knife. If it goes in without resistance, it’s ready. Cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.
Slow cooker method Grease the slow cooker with butter. Follow steps 2 and 3. Follow step 4, layering the potato slices, onion and thyme in the prepared slow cooker. Top with the stock, then cover loosely with foil, pressing down on the potato mixture. Cover with the lid and cook on high for 3 hours, or until the potato is meltingly tender and most of the liquid has been absorbed. Preheat the grill element in the oven. Transfer the potato to a baking dish or use the slow cooker dish. Sprinkle over the parmesan and grill for 4–5 minutes until the top is golden and bubbling. Cool for 10 minutes before serving. Mamma Mia! How a local production came to go again
cover story
To be performed at The Q from 13 April, director Jarrad West described the preceding 18 months spent on Mamma Mia! as “possibly one of the strangest theatrical experiences” of his life. “It’s not often you rehearse a show to nearly ready then shut down for 12 months,” he told Canberra Weekly. “It’s going to be very, very sad when it’s all over because the 18 months has forced us to be a lot closer than we would doing a show.” Part of what kept the group together throughout the challenges of 2020 was the decision to host monthly rehearsals as soon as restrictions allowed it, which served to both keep everyone fresh, but also get everyone together at a time when opportunities for social contact were scarce. “We really did try and go ‘okay, we want this to keep going; if you guys want to stay with us then we’d love to have you’,” West said. For West, his role as director on this production has focused primarily on people management. “It’s been just checking in really with everyone; it’s been a lot of, particularly when we were all locked down, trying to keep in touch with

Had you told the cast and crew of Free-Rain’s upcoming production of Mamma Mia! the Musical back in November 2019 that opening night wouldn’t be for another 18 months, you might have raised a few eyebrows. Having rehearsed the show to the point where it was nearly stage ready before COVID pushed everything back, there is a sense of relief, excitement and incredulity amongst the cast and crew that the day they finally take the stage is nearly here. During lockdown, Louiza Blomfield (centre), who plays Sophie’s mother, Donna, created update videos with director Jarrad West to bolster the cast and crew’s morale. Image supplied.
Having given birth just three months ago, actor Charlotte Gearside (left), who plays Sophie, said it will be “very special” for her to return to the stage come opening night.
everyone and communicate,” he said. “It became a people management situation for a lot of the time; there were times where it was a bit uncertain and frightening.” While peak restrictions were in effect, West and actress Louiza Blomfield, who plays Donna, started making update videos to share with the team to bolster morale. “They were a lot of fun and it’s spawned its own little joke that we should start doing our own podcast series, but we won’t,” West smiled. During their prolonged preproduction, within the cast and crew there have been the arrival of a new baby, two graduations, 35 birthdays, one funeral, and one engagement. Having given birth just three months ago, actor Charlotte Gearside, who plays Sophie, told Canberra Weekly it will be “very special” for her to return on stage come opening night. “2020 was such a horrible year for so many people, but I sit back and think it was a really wonderful year for me,” she said.
Having found out she was pregnant right before the show was postponed, had it been staged in November last year as planned, Gearside wouldn’t have been able to participate. “It’s such a big part of my life that brings so much joy; I’m glad I was able to commit to it,” she said. “Everyone’s been unbelievably supportive; it’s not very easy coming back doing such physical work after having a baby, but it’s a lovely thing to do.” Gearside described the process of playing Sophie as an “interesting” one given she’s “a 33-year-old playing a 20-year-old”. “My take on Sophie is she’s this young, fun, almost a little bit romantic-type girl who I think is a bit lost and is trying to find her way by locking down her fiancé,” she said. “The only reason she does that is because she didn’t see her mum do that; her missing piece is her father and her mum refuses to talk about it. “That’s her journey, she learns that at the end; she finds what she’s
looking for.” Mamma Mia! has enjoyed sustained success across the globe since debuting in London’s West End in 1999. West put that down to the enduring, widespread appeal of ABBA’s hits, even as we approach 50 years since their first record was released. “This is a two-and-a-half-hour ABBA concert basically, and I think that it certainly is a part of its enduring charm,” he said. Gearside also attributed the jukebox musical’s success to the relationships between characters. “It’s one of those really lovely shows that sits well with people in terms of family values and love and all the nice relationships … mother and daughter, mother and father, old lovers, new lovers, and friendships,” she said. In light of recent headlines emanating from Parliament House, Kim Scott’s Just Work seems very timely. Scott is a well-recognised CEO coach and has led high performing teams at Apple and Google. Sub-titled ‘Get Sh*t Done, Fast and Fair’, her latest book provides a practical guide to recognising and eliminating workplace injustice and making the best use of all the people in an organisation. As she points out, too often huge numbers of people, often women, are undervalued and under-utilised at work, while others are overestimated and promoted beyond their capability. Her book shows how to respect everyone’s individuality and collaborate effectively to achieve better business results. A must for senior managers.

According to research psychologist Sarah Woodhouse, we all carry trauma of one kind or another. This can manifest as anxiety, low self-esteem, over-eating and a host of other symptoms. Too often, people can become trapped in trauma cycles of dysfunctional behaviours, negative thoughts and difficult feelings. In You’re Not Broken, Woodhouse explains what trauma is and how to recognise and overcome it. She gently explains how to confront personal issues and look back at your past with honesty. She also uses the latest research to guide people towards breaking the ‘Trauma Loop’ and reclaiming their confidence. A helpful and insightful book.

In many ways, COVID-19 has overshadowed the devastation caused by the 2019-20 bushfire season and slowed environmental recovery efforts. Which is a shame, because as John Pickrell points out in Flames of Extinction, the fires killed more than three billion native animals and inched many species, such as koalas and the platypus, closer to extinction. Pickrell has travelled widely across the firegrounds and, in his book, he articulates in a very readable style the effects of the fires and shares moving stories of the efforts to save our wildlife. He also suggests radical new conversation methods. A fascinating and vital book that is a timely reminder of the importance of conservation.

The MI6 and CIA agents could have been written and played superficially, but here they are easy to identify with; pulled between their cold professionalism and humanity whilst balancing the needs of the many with those of the few who are in their care. Canberra’s new National Opera has ‘ridden the storm’ In the face of coronavirus, Canberra’s new-fledged National Opera has “ridden the storm” to bring world-class Australian singers to the ACT. The inaugural production of Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito opens this Saturday, 10 April. “It is a magnificent score,” said artistic director Peter Coleman-Wright. “It has a
relatively small cast. It is a poignant and very human story which unlocks all the qualities that we address in our own lives: love, passion, loyalty, revenge, ambition, clemency, and forgiveness; understanding, trust, strength, guilt, and remorse – and it is all by Mozart, probably, possibly the greatest of them all.” Tito (1791), one of Mozart’s last operas, is set in the reign of the Roman emperor Titus (Tito). Although his friend and a woman he loves try to kill him, Tito understands, pardons all. Tito is sung by the heldentenor Bradley Daley, who has sung some of the most challenging German and twentieth century roles both in Australia and in Germany: Siegmund and Siegfried in Wagner’s Ring,
Heldentenor Bradley Daley has sung some of the most challenging German and twentieth century roles both in Australia and in Germany.
Florestan in Beethoven’s Fidelio, the Kaiser in Strauss’s Frau ohne Schatten, Mao Tse-tung in Adams’s Nixon in China. “The role needs the weight and the gravitas of a Roman emperor,” Daley said. “He has three quite big arias, and tessitura (where the voice sits) is very high. You need that heroic sound in the voice.”
But Tito is also a compassionate role, Daley finds. “Tito built the Colosseum, but he refuses to throw anybody to the lions. He continually forgives and listens to what everybody has to say” – a wonderful message for the political turmoil of our age. Daley encouraged Canberrans to see National Opera’s production, and “get the bug” for opera. “It’s world-class music; it’s music being made at an international standard.” It features seasoned performers and talented newcomers, conducted by the sought-after Dane Lam. For mezzo-soprano Catherine Carby, her forte is ‘trouser roles’ – male characters, often teenagers, sung by women. Carby sings Sesto, a troubled young man whose girlfriend manipulates him into trying to kill his best friend, Tito. “I don’t mind wearing a pair of trousers to work, I have to confess!” she said. “I’d rather be in a pair of trousers than in a big corset and frock.” Carby has returned from the UK for this production. For the last few years, she has been based in London, singing with the Royal Opera,

Covent Garden, English National Opera, and English Touring Opera. But she is well known to Australian operalovers. Her roles with Opera Australia include Bizet’s Carmen, Donna Elvira in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, and an award-winning Cornelia in Handel’s Giulio Cesare in Egitto. Her ‘trouser roles’ include Mozart’s Cherubino (The Marriage of Figaro) and Idamante (Idomeneo), Octavian (Strauss’s Rosenkavalier), and Romeo (Bellini’s Capuleti e Montecchi). Reviewing one such part, Opera Magazine said: “Carby is superb in trouser roles, taking on masculine qualities in subtle, interesting ways without a trace of strain.” Far from feeling strained, Carby finds Sesto rather relaxing. She is the seconda donna. “The huge responsibility of the show doesn’t sit on my shoulders. I get to do a nice chunky, meaty role that’s heavily featured without the stress of being the soprano.” The part also sits happily for her voice. “This is my kind of bread-and-butter role, really.” Bel canto soprano Helena Dix sings Vitellia, the scheming daughter of a deposed emperor. Dix covered the role at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, shortly after making her debut there
in Verdi’s Falstaff. Described by one Australian critic as “the most exciting voice since Joan Sutherland”, Dix has sung Norma and Semiramide, roles associated with Sutherland, and is one of only a dozen sopranos in the world who can sing the demanding role of Elizabeth I in Donizetti’s Roberto Devereux. “Vitellia is incredibly complex; she is driven by anger, ambition, and love. I’m very fortunate because I get to play all these evil wenches and queens. I’m so glad I was never a soubrette, because I wouldn’t be very good at the lovey, gentle roles!” The role marks Dix’s return to the stage after suffering from coronavirus last year. Two days after the final performance, she travels to Melbourne to rehearse Verdi’s Macbeth. One of National Opera’s aims is to give young artists experience performing. Soprano Mikayla Tate sings Sesto’s sister Servilia. “I can’t quite believe that I get to debut professionally in a cast of this calibre! It’s like a masterclass every day.” A 2019–2020 Sponsored Young Artist with Pacific Opera, Tate was awarded Runner Up and Most Promising Vocalist by the Australian Concerto and Vocal Competition. Jess Green getting her band Pheno back together Fresh off her monumental work writing and performing We Are the Skywhales in collaboration with artist Patricia Piccinini, Canberra musician Jess Green is getting her band, Pheno, back together. A performance on Saturday 10 April at The Street will mark Green’s first full-set band show in nearly two years. The intervening time has marked a phase of rich professional growth and development for Green. Alongside spending 18 months working on the

Skywhale project, she has used the time to delve further into her production, songwriting and composing skills, and solo performing. “I ended up really enjoying that type of performing, but I’ve definitely started to miss the energy you get from other people on stage,” Green said. Previously, Pheno has been an all-girl threepiece band, but due to the lack of availability of some members, the line-up has changed to include members with a Y chromosome, and a fourth on bass guitar. Singer and guitarist Green will be accompanied by longstanding member Alyx Dennison on synths, Lachlan Coventry on bass, and James Hauptmann on drums. “The opportunity for the unexpected is quadrupled … there’ll be nuance that will be changing.” Pheno’s upcoming performance will include rearrangements of material for the four-piece band, as well as brand new music. Born in Canberra, Green returned to make the ACT her home in 2016 after many years working in Sydney, nationally and internationally, as a
freelance guitarist and singer. She’s keen to bring a show filled with “diversity and dynamism” to her home crowd. After their final Canberra flight was held on Saturday 3 April, Green considers having been approached to create We Are the Skywhales, the companion song for the maiden flight of Patricia Piccinini’s Skywhale and Skywhalepapa, a career-defining moment. “It was really a big adventure, and really interesting to be part of what is now an iconic work,” she said. The balloons have left Canberra for a twoyear Australia-wide tour. Green is hopeful the balloon sculptures can return to Canberra and enjoy a fittingly “massive” event when restrictions have eased. “We’d love to have thousands of people singing along, that would be the dream.” And yes, We Are the Skywhales will be performed at the Pheno live show. Pheno will play live at The Street Theatre on Saturday 10 April 8pm; thestreet.org.au

The 80/20 approach to wellbeing One of the myths about wellbeing is that you almost have to get everything just right for your body and mind to be healthy and well. Let’s face it – when we’re feeling good, we often take our wellbeing for granted. It’s often only when we are unwell or in pain that we start to pay attention. In response to our experience of suffering we review the ingredients that underpin our wellbeing like diet, activity levels, stress, emotional health and so on. If you are already healthy then you have
quite a lot of margin for error. Take nutrition for example. If you’re symptom free and you eat a diet based on nutrient-rich foods 80% of the time, you can indulge in foods that delight the senses but are not so good for you nutritionally 20% of the time. This is referred to as the 80/20 rule and can be applied to many aspects of health, not just nutrition. Wellbeing is a dynamic thing; it’s not somewhere you arrive at and take up residence. One of my favourite quotes comes from
O-Sensei, the founder of the Japanese martial art of Aikido. One of his students asked him how he managed to never lose his balance. He replied: “I lose my balance all the time. I just regain it so fast that nobody notices.” Whilst O-Sensei was talking about balance in the physical sense, the same applies in the broader notion of maintaining your equilibrium. You will work too hard some days, you will eat too much pizza and drink too much wine, you’ll experience emotional as well as life upheavals. The key is what you do next in order to tilt your path back towards balance. If a long hard week at work is followed by a weekend of replenishing and relaxing, then you will feel okay when Monday rolls around. If you over-indulge one evening, then be kind to your body the next day with lighter food. Be thoughtful to your body and mind and you can expect to enjoy robust and resilient wellbeing.

The epitome of luxury and quality Deakin 9 Macartney Crescent This builder’s own home is the pinnacle of luxury living. Set on a 992sqm block, it boasts over 490sqm of resort style living in the prestigious Inner South suburb of Deakin. Blackshaw Manuka agent Mario Sanfrancesco says 9 Macartney Crescent is truly an outstanding luxury family residence. “Centrally located in one of Canberra’s peaceful tree-lined streets, this residence stands superbly appointed and impeccably crafted to the highest standards,” he says. “It’s the ideal residence for a family who is looking for a new high-end home in the Inner South and not keen on going through the lengthy and costly process of building one.” This five-bedroom-plus-study home is filled to the brim with luxury features, including spotted gum timber floors, custom joinery, soaring ceilings,
two gas fireplaces, cinema room and a private cellar. Light streams into the home from the abundance of windows, illuminating the grand, modern kitchen with high-end Miele appliances, stone benchtops, butler’s pantry and separate scullery. With myriad living areas inside and out, the home is perfectly placed to cater for entertainers and families alike, with a beautiful main bedroom suite making a perfect parents’ retreat – it boasts a large walk-in robe, ensuite and overlooks the beautiful rear gardens and pool. Each of the remaining four king-sized bedrooms has access to one of the home’s four bathrooms, with bedroom two home to its own ensuite. The stunning alfresco entertaining area overlooks the sparkling in-ground, resort-style pool,
complemented by the established gardens boasting lush lawns, hedging and grand front entrance gates. All this and more sits in the heart of one of Canberra’s most desirable suburbs, close to all the amenities of the Inner South, Woden and the City. “The property is centrally positioned close to many local conveniences including the popular Deakin Shops, restaurants, and cafés,” says Sanfrancesco. “It’s nearby numerous top schools, Manuka, Kingston Foreshore, the Parliamentary Triangle, hospitals, Deakin business districts, sporting
fields and popular walking trails including Red Hill Nature Reserve. “It is also only minutes away from the CBD and Lake Burley Griffin.”

Weekly market wrap Is it still possible to find ‘value’? For those looking to purchase a property, it has become incredibly difficult to find great value options due to rapidly increasing prices. The astonishing pace of growth is evidenced in CoreLogic data for March, which identified house values increased by 3.3% and units 0.7% for the month. Limited stock, combined with historically low borrowing costs, has armed would-be buyers with an enormous amount of extra firepower by way of increased borrowing capacity, which is being comfortably utilised across the market. In a competitive market, are there still options for buyers that represent value – and where are they? If you’re looking for a house, it is unlikely you’ll find anything which will represent great value buying. This part of the market is red hot, super competitive and to be the successful
bidder at auction you’ll need to determine your own value for the property rather than relying on any datapoints for decision making. Having done this once myself, the benefits long-term are fantastic; however, a short-term risk of valuation shortfall can be challenging to manage. Valuation reports completed by third party valuers on behalf of lenders are reliant on historical data, which, when values are increasing rapidly, can come up short of purchase price due to lack of comparable sales, or a similar property recently selling for a lower price when the market has increased significantly since. During the first quarter of 2021, house values increased by 6.9%, illustrating how data only a month or two old can be completely irrelevant to current prices. If you know where to look, real value buying can be found within the multi-unit market. Unit values increased by 2.3% during the first quarter of 2021, setting them on track towards an annualised growth rate of 9.2%. The tricky part for buyers is that to find value, you need to be able to identify which projects have unique selling features and are backed by project teams with a track record of delivering on their vision.

property news WITH SAM DODIMEAD, LOCAL PROPERTY PROFESSIONAL AND HOST OF CANBERRA PROPERTY PODCAST
Units refers to multi-unit dwellings including both apartments and townhouses. To identify value, buyers need to be comfortable evaluating the site location, calibre of project team, floor plan and price. This involves detailed research to understand the types of people who live in the area and if there is new infrastructure proposed which could add value to the area. Live sales data for projects I work across has shown during the last 12 months, both apartments and townhouses can perform strongly. Their more moderated rate of growth comparted to houses leaves plenty of room for values to either maintain their current rate of growth sustainably or start to increase at a faster rate, with both providing plenty of potential upside. Editor’s note: Sam Dodimead is the listing agent for a number of developments which include multi-unit dwellings.

The Augusta Victoria College, a finishing school for daughters and goddaughters of the Nazi elite on the southcoast of England, is under close scrutiny after the mysterious disappearance of their teacher Mr Wheatley. The school governess, Miss Rocholl (Judi Dench), hires journeyman teacher Thomas Miller (Eddie Izzard) to replace Wheatley. Miller slowly raises the suspicions of Ilse Keller (Carla Juri), the girls’ German tutor. Miller is framed for murder and goes on the run to clear his name and uncover Ilse’s true plan for the girls. Can he stop her before it’s too late? Six Minutes to Midnight (M) in cinemas 22 April. Canberra Weekly has 10 x Six Minutes to Midnight (M) in-season double passes to be won.

To help fashionistas experiment with hair colour without any consequences, Revlon Professional is giving CW readers the chance to win a whole “wardrobe” of NCF, including three large bombs and four small tubes (colours may differ from those shown). Revlon’s NCF comes in 23 shades, sustainable packaging and leaves the hair nourished and shiny, making it completely safe for both hair and the planet. My favourite things RETIREMENT CHALLENGE “Now that I’m retired, I’ve challenged myself to learn to play the saxophone.”
EXERCISE BUDDIES
Photo Ian McLean
“Our dogs, Reilly and Kyla, have become our exercise buddies, insisting that we take them on long walks around Casey.”

Laurie Blackall
“I look forward to the challenges of building capability in NHW to remain relevant in an increasingly connected and informed Canberra community.”
Neighbourhood Watch ACT President
Long-time Canberra resident, Laurence “Laurie” Blackall, has finished his first full year as president of Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) ACT. Laurie was first involved in NHW in 1989 when he established NHW in the Belconnen suburb of Florey. After taking a break to focus on his career in 1991, he re-established his connection after retiring, joining NHW in Casey and taking on the area coordinator responsibilities and becoming NHW ACT board treasurer. His parents moved the family to the ACT in 1968, so Laurie has witnessed Canberra develop to the cosmpolitan city it is today. He grew up in Ainslie and Rivett before joining the Navy in 1977. After serving on HMA Ships, he returned to Canberra on posting in 1985. Laurie later left the RAN and joined the public service in 1998, where he remained until retirement in 2013. Laurie sees a great future for NHW in the ACT.
LIVING NEAR FAMILY “Family is very important to me and I am especially glad at festive times that our two adult children, their partners and our four grandchildren also live locally.”
TIME SPENT IN THE NAVY “While in the Royal Australian Navy, I developed a keen interest in project and program management and enhanced my leadership and management skills in several challenging roles.”
