This week... From the editor As Anzac Day 2021 approaches, I’m reminded of this time last year when, in those tenuous early weeks of the pandemic, the annual Anzac Day ceremonies around the country and internationally were cancelled. Instead, Australians were encouraged to ‘Light up the Dawn’ by heading out to their driveways, lighting a candle and tuning into a synchronised rendition of The Last Post. The images and stories shared by those who took part were poignant, finding solidarity and community in isolation. This year, as Australia has a firmer grip on the pandemic, those who commemorate Anzac Day can do so at public ceremonies (restrictions apply) or, once again, in their driveways. Numbers at the Australian War Memorial’s Dawn Service and National Ceremony are restricted and ticket allocations were quickly exhausted. We take this opportunity to acknowledge all those who have served and are serving in Australia’s Defence Forces. “At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.” And while looking across The Ditch, fingers crossed the fledgling Trans-Tasman travel bubble stays on track ... Reasons to be grateful this past week include fabulous fun at Free-Rain’s Mamma Mia! opening night at The Q, a delicious 34-dish Kerala Vishu Sadya vegetarian banquet at Daana, the abundant birdlife in my neighbourhood, morning walks and glorious autumn weather.

news A $4 million facelift for Braddon’s Lonsdale Street will see 25 car parking spaces along the strip removed as safety improvements for pedestrians, new furniture, intersection upgrades and a host of landscaping works are completed. With Lonsdale Street’s significant transformation over the last 15 years from a semiindustrial precinct to a residential/commercial high road, these streetscape works see the ACT Government bring public amenity up to scratch with the area’s contemporary use. The design features intended to improve pedestrian safety include upgrading the intersection with Girrahween Street, renewed verges at the Cooyong Street intersection, and two landscaped, mid-block zebra crossings between these intersections and Elouera Street. A City Renewal Authority spokesperson said the removal of the car spaces on Lonsdale Street will allow for the pedestrian crossings. “These crossings will make verge areas significantly more useable for outdoor dining and
improve exposure for local businesses as people will be able to cross more easily,” they said. Braddon’s United Retailers & Traders spokesperson Kel Watt told Canberra Weekly the broader benefits of the upgrade works will outweigh the impact of losing 25 street parks. “The 25 car park losses are going to be frustrating for some businesses, but probably welcomed by others,” he said. “The loss of parking spaces appears to be a concern … But businesses will do well if there’s more people in the area for more time spending more money, and the thought process behind this plan is designed to deliver that.” Currently there are 155 car spaces along Lonsdale Street and a further 293 car spaces within a three-minute walk of Lonsdale Street. Chief Minister Andrew Barr announced beautification works for both Braddon and Dickson in June last year. At the time, $13.9 million was put aside for the works with $9.6 million designated to Lonsdale Street. Construction was then signalled to

commence in February of this year. “We’re now obviously post-Easter, still emerging out of COVID restrictions, but the $9.6 million has been dropped to $4 million, so there’s a great sense of frustration and annoyance around that,” Mr Watt said. “We’re very happy to get the four (million), but some of the beautification and real rejuvenation work that could have been done with another $5.6 million is a missed opportunity.” Read an extended version of this story at canberraweekly.com.au - Denholm Samaras
New legislation forces ACT energy retailers to offer better deal The ACT Government this week announced new legislation that will require energy retailers to tell customers if a better deal is available. Making the announcement on Tuesday 20 April, Chief Minister and Treasurer, Andrew Barr, said energy prices were “notoriously hard to compare”, especially for those who couldn’t afford to spend time exploring their options. “These new rules will require energy retailers to tell you about a ‘reference price’ – a common benchmark that your deal will be compared against – and to tell you if a better deal is available, without you having to ask.” Mr Barr said the difference between a standing offer price and the best market price could be up to $400 a year, and about 40% of Canberrans were on standing offer contracts. Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction, Shane Rattenbury, recommended further measures ACT residents could implement to “take the power back” and reduce energy bills. “Using less power on the best possible deal is a winning combination,” he said. “Improving energy efficiency is the 6

other major cost saver that’s available to all Canberrans.” Mr Rattenbury said 74,000 households and businesses were saving an average $300 per year for households and $5,200 per year for businesses after participating in the ACT Government’s Energy Efficiency Improvement Scheme. ACT Council of Social Services (ACTCOSS) CEO Dr Emma Campbell said it was important to note the new rules alone were not enough to ensure “energy justice” in the ACT. “While we welcome the steps currently being taken, ACTCOSS is keen to ensure that they do not result in a perverse outcome for consumers,” she said. “We want to ensure that costs of compliance with these measures are not passed from electricity retailers to customers in a way that negates any customer benefit derived.” Dr Campbell urged the ACT Government to consider improvements to the Utilities Concession, the Utilities Hardship Fund, and to “explore options to support the broader cohort of vulnerable energy consumers in the ACT”. Earlier this month, it was revealed the electricity bill of the average ACT household will
rise by nearly $5.50 per week, or $300 per year. On 6 April, Evoenergy announced a 36% price hike for residential customers and 41% for low voltage commercial customers in 2021/22. Evoenergy attributed the increase to a 133% rise in the jurisdictional charge resulting from the ACT Government’s 100% renewable energy target. In response, Leader of the Opposition Elizabeth Lee MLA said the government failed to keep a promise that electricity bills would decrease by $43 annually in 2020/21. “The government needs to be upfront and tell Canberrans what they will do to keep power bills affordable,” she said. Dr Campbell last week said efforts to mitigate climate change must not lead to the entrenchment or exacerbation of disadvantage. She wrote to Mr Barr and Mr Rattenbury, calling for action to protect households, not-for-profits and small businesses from the energy price hikes forecast by Evoenergy. “We must have a just transition to renewable energy – an equitable distribution of risks and costs,” Dr Campbell said. - Rosa Ritchie
political capital Hypocrisy galore in Holgate-gate It’s not hard to feel a measure of sympathy for Christine Holgate, who in the last six months has transitioned from sacked-in-disgrace Australia Post CEO to star recruit for the women’s movement that blossomed after the alleged rape of Brittany Higgins. Holgate was ousted from her position after Victorian Labor Senator Kimberly Kitching asked questions in a Senate estimates hearing about $20,000 spent on Cartier watches for four senior AusPost executives in 2018. Scott Morrison promptly sacked Holgate. Let’s be clear: Holgate did no wrong. Australia Post may be owned by the Australian Government, but these days it operates in the marketplace on commercial principles. The taxpayer is much better off for the corporatisation of AusPost. Taxpayer subsidies have ended, and profits earned by efficient operation come back to the public coffers as dividends. Rewarding good performance by senior employees with bonuses or other non-cash benefits is common practice in corporate Australia. By the standards of large corporations, the four AusPost
executives earned those watches. Corporations that don’t recognise superlative performance by their staff risk losing them to other corporations. From this perspective, the Prime Minister did not cover himself in glory by moving so swiftly against the beleaguered AusPost CEO. But the Federal Opposition has nothing to be proud of either. Let’s do a hypothetical. Let’s imagine that, instead of sacking Holgate, Scott Morrison had defended her and supported her decision to gift the watches to the executives. Do we imagine that ALP politicians in that scenario would have clapped him on the back, congratulating him for upholding the values of the marketplace? Of course they wouldn’t. They would have ridiculed and castigated the government for wasting money on gold watches when householders are struggling to meet mortgage repayments. Morrison’s attack on Holgate, just an hour or so after the revelations in the estimates committee, was a tactical move designed to suck the oxygen out of what would otherwise have been a major ALP attack on government wastefulness. On the day she was sacked, Christine Holgate
had no champions in the Federal Opposition. The postal workers union – an affiliate of the Labor Party – welcomed her sacking. While Senator Kitching later defended her questions about WITH the watches by saying she was GARY HUMPHRIES AO, FORMER ACT CHIEF upholding “accountability MINISTER AND and transparency”, on the ACT SENATOR day itself her questions had been dripping with disapproval. This, for example: “Do you, Ms Holgate, consider it appropriate to use taxpayers’ money to buy Cartier watches for already highly remunerated Australia Post executives?” So the spectacle of Ms Holgate being lionised by Labor and crossbench MPs when she returned to the Senate committee last week was rich in irony. As one commentator put it, Senator Kitching had transformed herself from Holgate’s assassin to her supporter. Would this stunning turnaround have occurred if Holgate had been a man? I doubt it. The temptation to use her in the current narrative about Morrison’s insensitivity towards women was just too great. The hypocrisy of all this was but a minor inconvenience.

news Canberra rents hit record high Cheap Rex Canberra remains the most expensive capital city in the country to rent, with median rent sitting at $600 per week for houses and $500 for units. Data released by Domain last week reveals rent in the ACT is at an all-time high, with median rent for houses 3.4% higher than this time last year. Unit rents are up by just over 4%. “We’re continuing to see rents that are putting a lot of pressure on household budgets,” said Joel Dignam, executive director of renters’ advocacy group, Better Renting. Renters in the ACT are paying around $50 more per week for a house than renters in Sydney and Darwin – the two next most expensive cities to rent in. For units, it’s $30 more and $70 more than Sydney and Darwin respectively. Tenants in the “renter’s market” that is Melbourne can expect to pay $170 less per week for a house and $125 less for a unit than ACT renters. The vacancy rate for ACT rentals has also fallen to 0.7%, forcing fierce competition for available properties. Domain’s senior research analyst Nicola Powell
said tenants in the ACT have been operating in a “landlord’s market” for a while now, with landlords likely becoming accustomed to the competition to secure a tenancy. “Tenants will find the task of securing a lease harder, as the estimated number of vacant rentals continues to decline, 14% lower than last year,” Dr Powell said. Mr Dignam said this means people who are having trouble getting accepted for a rental property and those on lower incomes have far fewer options in the competitive market. “Not everyone in Canberra is on a high income,” he said. “There are plenty of people who can afford to be spending $300 a week for a room … but those people are competing for most of the same properties as people who are earning much less and where those high rents are meaning that people are going without food.” Rents have also risen in outer-city regions, as demand for properties continues to increase. - Libby Kimber
flights begin The first Rex flight from Sydney to Canberra touched down just before 8am on Monday 19 April – one of seven return flights each weekday. Australia’s largest independent regional and domestic airline, Rex announced last month that it would begin flights on the route with $99 fares. Rex deputy chairman, the Hon. John Sharp AM, said the new Saab 340 service heralded the return of competition on the route and the introduction of more affordable fares – less than a third of the average price of a Qantas ticket for the same route. According to the public policy evaluation and consultancy firm, Urbis, the Rex flights will directly boost the ACT economy by nearly $200 million each year, and create 300 new jobs. The flights represent an extra 160,000 seats a year and are expected to grow the total market by stimulating new leisure and tourism traffic and sparking a surge in travellers visiting friends and family.

news BentSpoke head brewer on the craft beer boom Canberra brewery BentSpoke is hard pressed to keep up with demand, having grown over 30% in the past three years, winning awards in national and international arenas and exploding in the wholesale market. When co-founder and head brewer, Richard Watkins, started out in the industry 25 years ago, there were seven small breweries in Australia. Today, there are over 700 craft breweries occupying about 7% of the beer market – maybe 8% since COVID-19 – and Watkins is leading the pack as the nation’s longest serving craft brewer. BentSpoke began as a brewpub in Braddon in 2014, before expanding two years later to open its cannery in Mitchell, now shipping wholesale quantities across the country.
This year, the brewery won first place in Australia’s biggest craft beer poll for its floral Crankshaft IPA, and demand is such that the cannery in Mitchell needs upgrades for the business to continue growing. “We’re actually getting to the point where we can’t really make enough beer here, so we’re looking at putting in a faster packaging line,” he said. “It’s a little bit scary because obviously we’re still not out of COVID.” According to Watkins, if the craft brewing industry Down Under were to grow to 10% of the market share, “there wouldn’t be enough stainless steel tanks in Australia” to brew that extra 2% in growth. For those looking to enter the industry, he’s a “really big believer” that there are only two successful

craft brewing models: start with a small retail brewpub or a large wholesale cannery. “Unfortunately, there’s a lot of breweries in Australia that are sitting in the middle,” Watkins said. In his opinion, breweries that tried to “be a bit of both” retail and wholesale from the get-go were impeded by the cost of labour, which is why many struggled to grow or become a national brand. Currently, a Small Brewers Rebate Scheme allows eligible brewers to claim a refund of 60% of excise duty paid per annum, up to a cap of $100,000. A pre-Budget submission by the Independent Brewers Association called for the cap to be raised to $350,000. Watkins said he was concerned a bigger excise rebate may motivate people to set up new breweries for the wrong reasons. “We’ve got a lot of passionate business owners who really believe

in brewing really good quality craft beer, and we don’t want to see that ethos change in our industry.” He suggested tighter controls around how the extra cash could be spent. “We don’t want to see people setting up breweries to try and make money, because they’re not doing it for the love of it, and craft beer is about the love of it,” Watkins said. “If you don’t love what you do, you shouldn’t be doing it.” - Rosa Ritchie

news When Canberra Bushwalking Club (CBC) was founded in 1961, its first members paid five shillings to join a group of like-minded people who loved being outdoors. CBC family walks coordinator and longterm member, Linda Groom, says she moved to Canberra for work and gained an instant social circle by signing up. “There were all these people, all under 35, not terribly rich – so we went around in battered old cars … doing a lot of bushwalking.” These days, details of upcoming walks are published online, embedded with maps and extensive activity descriptions; leaders use GPS to navigate, and walkers have access to hightech gear.
Celebrating its 60th birthday this year, Linda says the club doesn’t lack long-term members. “There are quite a few, and maybe 10 years ago we said, ‘Well, I mean that’s great for keeping the memory and the experience there, but it’s not great for the future of the club’.” Organisers made a conscious effort to attract younger members, with initiatives like Linda’s family walks, affectionately dubbed ‘Toddler Toddles’ – miniature exploratory courses, with rocks to conquer, interesting gullies and fantastic trees to climb. “And pretty much always, the toddlers outfox me in some way!” she laughs. “Watching them invent their own version of the bush, that’s really fun.”
But when the club first started there were no such things and gear was basic. “We just wore long socks!” Linda laughs. Upcoming walks were advertised with oneliners, like this 1964 description of a weekend of “snow caving/igloo building” in the Snowy Mountains: “Solve your own housing problem, cheap blocks with short leases”.
Best of all, the plan to attract younger members is working. “We’re now getting people in the 25 to 45 age group, and they’re bringing in their friends.” Not all CBC outings are a walk in the park, and Linda says it is a group leader’s responsibility to ensure that everyone who is signed up for a walk will be able to manage it.

Her sense of adventure is obvious as she recounts crawling through a blackberry hedge via a wombat hole to re-fill water bottles on a recent trip to Flea Creek. Although COVID-19 caused the club to cancel walks for a few months last year, it only heightened interest. CBC president Diana Terry says CBC experienced a huge spike in membership enquiries in 2020. As time marches on, so too does CBC, with no sign of stopping. “I think the club will still be here in a few centuries,” Linda says. - Rosa Ritchie Read an extended version at canberraweekly.com.au
Belconnen Osteopathy advertising moment
Belconnen Osteopathy cares for your mind, body and soul Focusing on caring for Canberrans of all ages, Belconnen Osteopathy has officially opened at the Belconnen Fresh Food Markets. Specialising in visceral manipulation, cranial osteopathy (“craniosacral”), soft tissue techniques, spinal and joints manipulation and dry needling, the new clinic offers a range of services to suit the needs of everyone with its holistic approach. Owner and osteopath Dr Patricia Ortiz says “it’s important to look at the whole person” when assisting with recovery – which is why her approach is not one size fits all. “What I do is not purely a biomechanical approach, I incorporate many concepts, therefore I work very holistically. I am also very intuitive, and I combine evidence-based assessments with my intuition to understand what the best approach 14

for each person is,” Dr Ortiz says. Osteopathy, a type of manual medicine that emphasises the relationship between all the tissues and systems of the body and how everything is connected, can address many conditions such as muscle and joint pain, headaches, arthritis and much more. Osteopaths are AHPRA registered health care practitioners. Dr Ortiz works with the musculoskeletal system to help with a wider range of disorders. For instance, the visceral manipulation can help not only with conditions such as constipation, IBS, digestive issues, endometriosis, and overactive bladder, but working on the ligaments and connective tissues in the abdominal cavity may also help with back pain, hip tightness, shoulder pain, and more. “I am also very interested in
childhood trauma because it affects the body … people with childhood trauma will have more probability to have some health problems and several issues. “Osteopaths may not necessarily address mental conditions directly, but we can help indirectly by working with and through the musculoskeletal system to support the recovery of the whole person,” Dr Ortiz says. Patients don’t need a referral to book an appointment; they can book directly on her website [www. belconnenosteopathy.com.au]. They can also get a CDM plan from their GP, which gives a Medicare rebate for five visits. For people with private health insurance, it’s possible to get a rebate claimed on the spot. In addition, Dr Ortiz is fluent in English, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian.
Belconnen Osteopathy owner and osteopath Dr Patricia Ortiz is passionate about caring for the minds, bodies and souls of all Canberrans.

Upali Kariyawasam has created a menagerie of sculptures in his backyard after needing a creative outlet during the COVID-19 pandemic. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
Retired chef’s creative journey from ice carvings to garden art Over one year ago, the COVID-19 pandemic interrupted the world, forcing any people to stay home and exercise their creativity to have some fun. For Weston Creek resident, Upali Kariyawasam, creativity has always been a part of his life, but the pandemic enabled him to explore his artistic side as he created unique garden sculptures to brighten his backyard. Mr Kariyawasam’s creative journey started in the kitchen when, at the age of 24, he moved from Sri Lanka to London, where he trained in cooking European cuisine. With more than 40 years’ experience cooking all over the world, he still loves being in the kitchen, cooking delicious feasts for family and friends. “I had two restaurants in the heart of London,” he said. During his career, Mr Kariyawasam was invited to Buckingham Palace twice, was named the “MasterChef of Sri Lanka” and worked at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, having immigrated to Australia in the late 1980s. He created his first cement sculpture, a dolphin that once decorated the entryway of his home, “a long time ago”. His passion for 16
canberraweekly.com.au
sculpting began when he learnt how to carve ice sculptures in London via his colleague, a breakfast chef from Japan. “I was head chef those days and I thought I must go and sit with him ... he was so talented, so I learnt from watching him. “Then when I came to this country, one guy who was the head chef at the Tuggeranong Vikings Club, he said ‘could you do a butter carving?’ Then I made a Viking into a butter carving and that went well,” Mr Kariyawasam said. When the pandemic hit last year, he began to make more garden sculptures as a creative outlet. A lion, elephant, kangaroo and an octopus on the roof are just some of the art pieces decorating the backyard, while a bust of his father and a statue of Sir Don Bradman sit near his workshop. Mr Kariyawasam makes the sculptures using chicken wire, cement and hessian. While his backyard is already brimming with art, he has no plans to stop. “It’s just a bit of fun,” he smiled. - Erin Cross Find an extended version of this story at canberraweekly.com.au

Why did you decide to apply for the show? H: We watched season one, separately, and we would message during the episodes like ‘that was good, that was bad’. And I think at some point it literally came to ‘we could do this’. M: After a couple of drinks! What was it like when you found out you were on the show? H: I started laughing. M: I was dead silent! How did you prepare? M: Just building different stuff. And you know, everyone’s really friendly on the show … we would share our tips with other people and they would share their tips with us, which sounds counterintuitive for a competition but I think everyone just wanted to see cool stuff built. H: At the end of day, you don’t want anyone to put down something that’s terrible. What’s it’s like shooting a TV show? H: It was a bit weird at first, walking onto a set with cameras everywhere and producers talking to you and all that kind of stuff … and knowing that you’re being filmed at all times while trying to do something that everyone will comment on and people will criticise – because we’ve criticised previous teams. So, it took a while to get over that! How did you learn and develop your Lego skills on the show? M: We realised pretty early on, we weren’t the most creative team and we weren’t the most technical team … we do end up taking a lot more risks than the other teams. H: We just needed to find a way to make everything we put down our own. We needed to put down something that reflected us. M: We have a sense of humour, so we brought that into pretty much every single build.
The duo on set, where they will take on contestants from around the country in a bid to win $100,000. Photo supplied.
You both have a background in science – does that help with Lego? H: Yes and no. There are moments where I’ve thought about it too logically … but then it’s like ‘this is Lego, you can do whatever you want with it!’ M: But then from a process point of view, it does help. Because we can see where we need to get to and the steps that we require. Do you have any Lego building tips for aspiring Lego masters? M: You’ve just got to do it, and you’ll find the first time you do something, it’s going to be crap. Even the second time you do it, you won’t be fantastic. But third time, you’ll notice a big improvement in the stuff you do. What’s it like hanging out with host Hamish Blake on set? M: He’s actually a legend! H: It’s so nice having him there because clearly he knows enough about what’s going on to give you occasional advice, but when he’s talking to you it’s a lot more calming than when Brickman (Lego Masters judge Ryan McNaught) is talking to you! Anzac Day baking It’s that time of year again! Time to whip out the golden syrup and oats and roll yourself some Anzac biscuits. WITH FOOD WRITER, LIBBY KIMBER
Anzac biscuits Makes 15 1 1/4 cups of plain flour, sifted 1 cup Uncle Tobys traditional rolled oats
Preheat oven to 170°C. Place the flour, oats, sugar and coconut in a large bowl and stir to combine. In a small saucepan, place the golden syrup and butter and stir over low heat until the butter has fully melted. Mix the bicarb soda with 1 1/2 tablespoons boiling water and add to the golden syrup mixture. It will bubble whilst you are stirring together so remove from the heat.
2 Tbsp golden syrup
Pour into the dry ingredients and mix together until fully combined. Roll tablespoonfuls of mixture into balls and place on baking trays lined with non-stick baking paper, pressing down on the tops to flatten slightly.
150g unsalted butter, chopped
Bake for 12 minutes or until golden brown.
1/2 cup caster sugar 3/4 cup desiccated coconut
1/2 tsp bicarb soda 1 1/2 Tbsp boiling water
Recipe courtesy of Hayden Quinn for Uncle Tobys.
According to the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), the use of the word ‘Anzac’ in the commercial production and sale of Anzac biscuits is usually approved. However, there are a couple of rules for Anzac biscuits that should be adhered to! The biscuits should not substantially deviate from the generally accepted recipe and shape (no chocolate chips!) and must be referred to as either ‘Anzac biscuits’ or ‘Anzac slice’ – referring to them as ‘Anzac cookies’ is a definite no-go. Using the word ‘Anzac’ for other food products is not on, either. The DVA says each year it declines permit applications for things like ‘Anzac cheesecakes’, muffins or sandwiches. There is some good news for those with dietary requirements, though. The DVA doesn’t consider recipes substituting ingredients for dietary requirements to be a deviation and, in some cases, has given permission for the word Anzac to be used for production of Anzac biscuits where ingredients have been substituted for this purpose. Anzac biscuit recipes that appear on personal social media pages and posts are outside the scope of the regulations.
Tips for baking Anzac biscuits MasterChef alum Hayden Quinn shared some of his top tips for baking Anzac biscuits, which includes buying good quality oats! Photo Kerrie Brewer
• Add a pinch of sea salt flakes before baking to counter the sweetness of the biscuit. • Spray your measuring spoon with some cooking oil before scooping out your golden syrup to prevent sticking. • For a chewy Anzac biscuit, bake between 10 and 12 minutes. For a crunchier version, try 12-15 minutes or until the biscuits are very brown and let them firm up on the tray. • Brown your butter before adding it to the other ingredients – this will add a rich nuttiness and a hint of caramel. • Get them in the oven quick – the dough will dry out so bake them as soon as they’ve been rolled. • The biscuits will keep for a week in an airtight container. You can also freeze them for up to two months – once the biscuits have completely cooled, pop them in a zip lock bag and into the freezer.

Jacko’s Pizza advertising moment
Want to own your very own pizza business? If you’ve ever wanted to own your very own pizza business, now’s your chance! Iconic local pizza catering company, Jacko’s Pizzas, is up for sale with Jacko himself looking for someone to carry on his (delicious) legacy. After nearly 30 years of slinging pizzas to the people of Canberra at events big and small, Jack ‘Jacko’ McGrath is hanging up his apron. Since 1987 he’s been in the pizza game – having been a founding partner in his original ‘Jacko’s DialA-Pizza’ business – and since has come to specialise in mouthwatering pizzas for events from small birthday parties to large-scale festivals like Summernats and Spilt Milk. And now, he wants to pass the pizza paddle to someone new to continue the Jacko’s Pizza legacy. “I’m 69 next year,” says Jacko. “I left school in ‘69, and I’m going to leave work when I’m 69.” “I’ve got seven granddaughters, they’re looking for my time; I’ve got a farm, it’s looking for my time – and everyone wants pizza!” The lucky buyer/s can opt to purchase the business as a whole or separately, with Jacko open to selling

The bus looks after private parties and catering jobs, while the vans take on larger-scale events like festivals, community events like the Canberra Show and footy matches. He says the new owner/s of Jacko’s Pizza will be able to take over an established, local business, with a network of great contacts, regular jobs and contracts to large events like festivals, sporting events like AFL, NRL and rugby games, and private catering jobs. There’s even a few regular winery jobs to take on – the perfect match for a pizza business! “We do a lot of work around Canberra,” Jacko says. “We’re flat out.” “Every time I do an event, I pick up another one.” As well, Jacko will be on hand for a little while to hand over his wisdom, tricks of the trade and his penchant

endeared itself to the community. “To have Canberra Milk be back now in Australian hands and to have such longevity and to have really made such a commitment to the city … I think people respond to that and appreciate it,” Bulkeley said. “The milk might be a little bit more expensive, but you get what you pay for and they put a lot of that back into the community.” Featuring unique dairy objects from the CMAG collection and private lenders, the exhibition is divided with a wall dedicated to Canberra Milk’s tireless and prolific efforts to support local sport and the community. CMAG curator Tiaan Zampaglione said the Canberra Milk exhibition features unique dairy objects from their collection and private lenders, including this curious milk carton cow.
Udderly iconic: celebrating 50 years of Canberra Milk To celebrate their golden birthday, Canberra Museum and Gallery (CMAG) has opened a new exhibition that also honours a beloved local business; Don’t Forget the Milk: Celebrating 50 Years of Canberra Milk. Over the last 50 years, Canberra Milk has become one of the most recognisable and iconic brands in the region. Having returned to Australian ownership through Bega Cheese as of 2021, Canberra Milk has operated throughout the Capital region since the ACT Milk Authority was established in 1971. Today, the now legen-dairy company directly employs 28

approximately 70 people and supports the local community in a variety of ways – from grassroots sport and local charities to the Canberra Raiders NRL team. CMAG curators Sharon Bulkeley and Tiaan Zampaglione told Canberra Weekly the exhibition came about when Canberra Milk approached the Museum to celebrate their 50th anniversary this year. Don’t Forget the Milk explores the history of the capital’s early dairy industry, the creation of Canberra Milk, and the brand’s development. Bulkeley said the exhibition shows people “not only that backstory of how it gets into your fridge”, but also how Canberra Milk has built its brand and
The other wall chronicles the history of dairy farming in the ACT through artefacts and photos, and even includes objects from CMAG’s own collection, such as old milking aprons and some of the material from Duntroon dairy that clearly demonstrates how the technology has changed. “It was literally delivered on the back of a cart in these big cannisters, ladled out quart by quart to today where you just duck down to the servo,” Zampaglione said. “We had cows roaming around in Canberra; that’s how it was, and everything was done by hand. “Then all of a sudden when the lake was filled in, we lost a lot of our land, and the dairy industry decreased in Canberra.” While as of 2021 there are no dairy cows left in Canberra, the milk is still sourced from the local region and processed in town at Canberra Milk’s Fyshwick facility.
‘The Milk’: more than just a tale of two teams
Perhaps best known for their place on the front of one of Australian sport’s
most iconic jerseys, the communitycentric Canberra Milk have done a lot more than that to support local sport. Canberra Milk are a foundation sponsor of the Canberra Raiders, and have returned as front-of-jersey sponsor this year, 26 years after the iconic early-1990s stint. Green Machine fans were pumped when it was announced the 2021 jersey would see ‘The Milk’ return – with the heritage jersey selling out in record time. They’re also foundation sponsors of the Brumbies and were front-of-jersey sponsors for the local Super Rugby team’s first few seasons from 1996. According to Bulkeley, part of the brand’s resonance as a frontof-jersey sponsor even outside of Canberra comes down to the wholesome nature of the business. “People respond to it … they love seeing a brand that’s healthy and local and basically family oriented as opposed to an alcohol company or a betting agency,” she said. “From a family and community point of view, it’s something people recognise and respect and identify with.” However, it’s not just the Raiders and the Brumbies ‘the Milk’ have backed. They have long supported female sport through local W-League team, Canberra United, in addition to bike racing, the GWS Giants (AFL), the Cavalry (baseball) and many grassroot sports. “They’re behind the scenes working to make sure those sports are getting off the ground and people have got the opportunity to play them, which is really important,” Bulkeley said. - Denholm Samaras Don’t Forget the Milk: Celebrating 50 Years of Canberra Milk is on display at CMAG until 31 July.

You returned to Australia from the USA last year with your family, what brought you back? Near the beginning of 2020 we already were planning it, but we got very involved in getting Trump out of office so it was important to us to stay through the election. Once that was done, it really felt like we kind of owed it to the kids for a better sense of safety.

Take 5: Ben Lee One of Australia’s most prolific singersongwriters of the last 30 years, Ben Lee has continually reinvented himself creatively; as a punk rocker, indie-pop star, and half a folk duo with How I Met Your Mother’s Josh Radnor. Lee will perform at The Street, City West, Friday 30 April 7.30pm; ben-lee.com
How was the process of returning? You’d hear people complaining about having to do hotel quarantine. Hotel quarantine was like the first time we felt really safe in a year; it was our best chance of not contracting COVID. The feeling of having the opportunity to provide my family more safety; it’s bittersweet because you know all our family and friends are back there (in the USA).
3
How have you found living and performing in Australia since# being back? It’s just been awesome; I’ve had immense gratitude for just getting back on stages. Also, it’s interesting being here during these early chapters of this massive boom in Australia
in terms of like our industry, entertainment. Everyone in the world wants to be here making stuff. It’s quite an incredible experience.
4
With your extensive back catalogue, how do you decide what to play at your live shows? I have a giant list of songs and I take them up on stage and sort of see what happens. I’ve got a cassette player with me with some backing tracks that I made. So that’s kind of my band, that’s Mr JVC. There’s a lot of rewinding … everyone should bring a pencil because if the tape gets stuck, I need to wind it back.
5
You’ve been making music professionally for close to 30 years; how do you reflect on your career? The actual work that comes out, while hugely important, is like the second level of work. The most important level of work is the way someone lives their life and that’s where the real artistry is evident. I think of the actual works of art like footprints; it’s like I’m looking at a big mountain I’m climbing that I’m halfway up.

Canberra performers team up for Golden Planet Tour Two of Canberra’s foremost singersongwriters, Lucy Sugerman and Reverend Bones, are playing a gig at ANU later this month to mark the release of new singles from both performers. The titles of their new tracks – Sugerman’s golden boy and Reverend Bones’ Captain Planet – combine to form the name of a mini-tour the pair are kicking off at ANU’s Kambri on 30 April: The Golden Planet Tour. The musicians are excited to team up to celebrate their new singles with an evening of catchy pop, anthemic rock and possibly some classic disco. Their first filmed performance, fans are invited to buy tickets before Friday 23 April, with anyone who gets in by then going into the draw to win a free acoustic house show performance by Sugerman and Bones. Sugerman’s new single golden
boy is the third offering from her upcoming debut EP out later this year; she described it as her “mouthiest” song yet. “I hope all my fellow heartbroken and jaded people can relate and have a little chuckle about their decisions in love and things they put up with, too,” she said. Having grown up in an evangelical Christian community, Reverend Bones said his new single Captain Planet is about the tension between living a responsible life and having fun. “The Christian desire to ‘save the world for Jesus’ probably made me a good recruit for environmentalism,” he said. Secret & Special by Will Davies Vintage, $34.99
Will Davies’ Secret & Special provides the first popular history of the operations undertaken by the secretive Special Reconnaissance Department (SRD), and its lethal Z Special Unit, during World War II. Inspired by the success of the British Special Operations Executive in Europe, Prime Minister Curtin established the SRD in 1943 as a way of better directing secret, subversive, behind-the-lines operations against the Japanese. Over the next two years, the unit bravely terrorised the Japanese with daring raids throughout South East Asia, sometimes with tragic results. Drawing on classified reports and first-hand accounts, this is an absorbing read about a very special unit.
Failures of Command by Hugh Poate
The Changing of the Guard by Simon Akam
NewSouth, $32.99
Scribe, $60
On 29 August 2012, Private Robert Poate and two other Australian soldiers were killed by a Taliban sleeper who had infiltrated the Afghan National Army. It was a terrible event that understandably devastated the families of those who had lost their lives. Robert’s father, Canberran Hugh Poate, was shocked by what he found out after the attack and of the paucity of the Army’s internal investigation report. Dismayed by the actions of the ADF, he set out to discover the truth behind his son’s death and, in the process, uncovered a labyrinth of excuses, cover-ups, incompetence and lessons not learnt. A moving and important book about Australia’s war experience in Afghanistan.
The Changing of the Guard is a major book that provides the first serious analysis of the effectiveness of the modern British Army. Drawing on widespread documentary research, field reportage and extensive interviews, journalist and former soldier Simon Akam delivers a fulsome examination of the state of the British Army and how it has not adapted to the changing nature of warfare in the 21st century. With a particular focus on the failure of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, he gives a brunt assessment of the Army as an institution and its role in society. There is lots of interesting material here and some relevant lessons for Australia.

Now showing The Father (M) Anne (Olivia Colman) visits her father Anthony (Anthony Hopkins) at his apartment after he became belligerent with his last caretaker. Anne tells Anthony that she is leaving London for Paris to live with her new boyfriend Paul (Rufus Sewell). This confuses Anthony since he thought she was married to James, however, they divorced years ago … Co-written and directed by Florian Zeller, based on his 2012 play Le Père, The Father has been well received; both leads have received well deserved Oscar nominations. Anthony is a very proud man, battling for his independence while he is conscious of his reality crumbling around him. Suspicious that his daughter and her boyfriend are plotting to put him into a home, Anthony rebels
against them and the caretakers who Anne hires to ease her burden. Anne is pulled between the needs of her father and the want of her own life. Weighed down physically, emotionally and psychologically by caring for her father, Anne must also compete with the ghost of her sister, whom Anthony idolises. True to its stage origins, the movie is set primarily in an apartment. The performances and weaving story ensnare the audience, painting fully dimensional characters who, while flawed, are tragically easy to empathise with. Verdict: Like Still Alice, the movie presents the devastating effects of dementia on the individual and those around them. The Father, however, puts us uncomfortably into centre stage. 5 stars. The Father is screening at Palace and Dendy Cinemas. - Luke McWilliams themovieclub.net

Women are not prioritising their eye health, according to new research commissioned by Specsavers. The research found 48% of women in the ACT, Tasmania and the Northern Territory combined have put off making an eye appointment for a month or longer after receiving a reminder, and 26% have never booked after a reminder. Millennial women nationwide were the most likely to put off making an appointment for a month or longer, while 69% of women who frequently cancelled or postponed an appointment did so due to family commitments. Retail giant David Jones has today, Earth Day (22 April), launched a new initiative called BeautyCycle. In partnership with recycling social enterprise, TerraCycle, David Jones hopes to make the beauty industry more sustainable by providing a recycling option for beauty packaging that can’t go in the regular recycling bin. the country where customers can dispose of their empty packaging. Did COVID-19 change your shopping habits? According to a YouGov global report, around 48% of Australians said the pandemic had changed the way they shopped for goods like food and personal care items. Australians have reported spending more on things like fruit and vegetables, frozen food and alcohol, but cosmetic products didn’t share in the increase, with only 9% reporting an increase in spending on cosmetics and 21% reporting a decrease. More people are now buying in bulk, and half of younger shoppers said they’d be heading online more often to make purchases for delivery. Two-thirds of shoppers said they would make more of an effort to shop locally, and 50% said they would buy more sustainable products in the future.
Shoe retailer Platypus has announced it will be supporting its namesake by way of a collaboration with iconic boot brand Timberland. The two companies have teamed up for an exclusive, limited-edition boot made from 10% plant-based materials and featuring the Platypus teal colourway and a “save the platypus” tag. $10 from every sale of the boot will be donated to the Australian Platypus Conservancy, to further their work in conserving the platypus and its freshwater habitats. The boots will be available in-store and online for $319.99 until Monday 3 May. According to the Cosmetic Physicians College of Australasia (CPCA), the return to ‘normality’ in 2021 has come with an increase in demand for noninvasive aesthetic treatments. CPCA president Michael Molton said the ‘Zoom boom’ – “I saw my face on Zoom” – is contributing to an increase in demand for services like anti-wrinkle injections and skin treatments.

Liv Hewson ‘empowered’ by coming home For Australian actor Liv Hewson, returning from Hollywood to their hometown of Canberra as an adult was an empowering moment. Coming off the back of starring in the Netflix original series Santa Clarita Diet opposite Drew Barrymore, Hewson decided to come back to Canberra in the second half of 2020 to see their family, following the uncertainty of the pandemic and travel restrictions. “I was in Canberra from July to December which was the longest I’ve been back in five years,” they said. “It was a strange silver lining in a lot of ways because I hadn’t spent that much time at home since I was 19. “I’ve grown up a lot and changed a lot and I got to know the city … it was quite moving. It was like a reintroduction.” Born in Canberra, Hewson grew up in the suburb of Hughes and began their career at the Canberra Youth Theatre. As one of the faces of the new gender-
neutral collection from homewares brand Sheridan, Hewson is well versed on making every new location they visit feel like home. Alongside artist Jamie Preisz and singer/ songwriter CXLOE, Hewson was enlisted to be a part of Sheridan’s Gen Z ‘Where Dreams are Made’ campaign, as they use their bedroom, no matter where they are, as a key space to explore, create and rehearse. “I still act in my bedroom,” they said. “I make a stack of boxes and books on my bed and film myself with my phone.” Sheridan’s gender-neutral collection is a first for the brand, designed for Gen Z and Millennial Australians who are discovering the importance of having a space to sleep, dream and create. After spending numerous hours on the road, Hewson said that creating a safe space to express their true self was important. To help keep a sense of ‘home’ and self, Hewson said they often bring small items with

them to put in their room. “For a long time, I didn’t have roots anywhere because I was travelling a lot … I had lots of little pieces … sometimes books, a soft toy, or even a blanket. “I still try to take a couple of things to ground the space I’m staying in as mine. “It is true; a bedroom is a space for being vulnerable and exploring,” Hewson said. “For me personally, I just want to de-gender my spaces because that’s more comfortable for me as a non-binary person … everyone should have the space and freedom to experiment with those things if they want.” - Erin Cross

What are activated nuts? Raw nuts are nutritional powerhouses, packed with protein, healthy fats, fibre and essential minerals like magnesium, zinc, phosphate and calcium. However, they also contain natural chemicals like phytates and enzyme inhibitors that can reduce the body’s ability to absorb nutrients properly. Eating large amounts of raw nuts can, for some, put extra pressure on their digestive system resulting in uncomfortable digestive symptoms like bloating, cramping, heaviness and nausea. The solution? Activate them! Activated nuts are simply nuts that have been soaked in water for 12-24 hours and then slowly dried again so they are crisp. The soaking serves to stimulate the early germination and sprouting process within the nut (or seed, legume or grain) which can make them gentler on the digestive
system. Soaking also reduces the phytates, thereby increasing the bioavailability of the nutrients within the nuts. If you cook legumes, like lentils or kidney beans at home (rather than just opening a tin), you’ll be familiar with the process of first soaking them until they soften before cooking them in order to make them more digestible. Is it necessary to activate your nuts? Opinion is divided. Phytates have some anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects and may help with lowering blood glucose levels, so it’s too simplistic to say that phytates are simply bad for you. Like many aspects of nutrition, it comes down to an individual’s needs. If you find you do get unwanted digestive symptoms after eating nuts, then you may want to try activating them first and see if it makes them easier for you to digest.
How to activate nuts at home Leave the nuts to soak for around 7-12 hours (almonds will need longer, between 12-14 hours). Strain the nuts, place them on a baking tray and place them in a low heat oven between 50oC to 65oC or use a food dehydrator (to make sure you preserve the nuts’ essential fats and nutrients) for around 12-24 hours. Make sure the nuts are totally dry before you remove them from the oven, otherwise they can go mouldy. When they’re done, store them in the fridge in an airtight container. One thing is for sure, activated nuts, with their extra crunch, are a delight to eat. Editor’s note: Our rotating wellbeing and fitness columns provide information that is general in nature. Saffron crocus is as beautiful as it is valuable, to humans and bees alike.
Autumn in the garden
Now is the time to order your bare-rooted exotic and fruiting plants at your local nursery or trusted online supplier. Yalca Fruit Tree Nursery and Daleys Fruit Trees are now taking orders for the 2021 season. It is also worth preparing planting sites well in advance, to give any organic additions plenty of time to settle. Here today, gone tomorrow: It’s Saffron Crocus (Crocus Sativus) harvest time, although you may have missed it as their cropping season is fleeting to say the least. The high-end and deliciously exotic stamens from this herbaceous plant require
immediate harvesting when the flowers appear from within its subtle foliage, otherwise you will miss out. Keep your saffron stash in a conveniently located area so the chances of overlooking them are avoided. Aside from producing a highly soughtafter culinary ingredient, saffron crocus flowers are especially ornamental, and bees adore them. Mother Nature doesn’t like bare earth and responds by covering it with fast-growing, pioneer plants with low nutritional requirements and exemplary reproductive capabilities. Generally, these plants are considered garden pests and once they have produced seed, are difficult to control. The veggie patch is one such place where the soil surface is commonly idle, damp and host to weedy plants outstaying their welcome. However, these unwanted plants also have many benefits including protecting the soil, encouraging beneficial soil life and increasing nutrient levels. Many are also healthy additions to the human diet. When used smartly, weeds are your friends. The key is knowing which varieties to leave and which, including my nemesis couch grass, are best removed straight away. Weedy crops can be dug into the soil, left as a lush organic mulch, or used to make a fertiliser tea. Any seed heads should be removed before they mature to prevent their spread.
WITH HORTICULTURIST TRACEY BOOL traceyboolgardenwriter.com
The Cabbage White Butterfly is a regular gardening pest and can wreak havoc on young seedlings, particularly those from the brassica family. Putting pretend white butterflies about the place helps deter them as they are territorial. Exclusion control using pots covered with old onion or orange bags and their bases removed works a treat for smaller plants. Monitor and collect seed from remnant summer veggies and herbs as they mature. Depending on the variety, some seeds require harvesting early and ripening in paper bags or similar, to prevent them dispersing before collection. If you don’t intend on getting out in the veggie patch this winter, throw in a green manure or nitrogen fixing crop to rejuvenate the soil in readiness for spring. Build up compost reserves with all the prunings and vegetative matter, which inevitably arises at this time of year.

Throughout the home, features like parquetry flooring, natural light and mature gardens make this home extra special, and the upgraded kitchen and bathrooms ooze modern charm. “The changing leaves of the gorgeous canopy of Spanish oak trees make Jansz Crescent one of Canberra’s most beautiful streetscapes, and arguably the best street in Griffith,” says Selleck. “Just a short stroll to Canberra Grammar School, the boutique precincts of Manuka and Kingston, while being close to quality private
and public schools, Parliamentary Triangle, and the Federal Golf Club make Jansz Crescent a very highly sought-after blue-chip location.”

Countryside comfort Bywong NSW 202 Snowgum Road Snowgum Road is one of Bywong’s premier addresses, and number 202 certainly lives up to its surrounds. Licensed agent from McGrath North Canberra, Michael Fay, says this is a “substantial, wellproportioned family home”, with a host of noteworthy features like “cute as a button” dormer windows, wrap-around veranda and a cast iron cooker in the kitchen that’s “a work of art in itself”. “With multiple segregated living areas and two master suites, [it’s] perfect for families with teenagers or extended families, or those that simply like to entertain in style. “Horse lovers will appreciate the horse facilities on offer, with three yarded stables, huge tack room and
horse wash bay, and a full-size arena and round yard.” At the end of a peaceful cul-desac, 202 Snowgum Road enjoys views across the surrounding countryside, and outside is home to a large paved entertaining area with shade sail and curated, low-maintenance gardens, perfect for enjoying the tranquil surrounds. There’s also a large pavilion, currently used as a spa area but could be transformed for entertaining or even a gym space. Inside, the four-bedroom home enjoys a number of separate living areas, modern kitchen, a number of fireplaces and master suite with ensuite and walk-in robe. Upstairs, the large fourth bedroom adjoins

Weekly market wrap Looking for value Finding opportunities to extract value from Canberra’s property market has become an extremely difficult task. Prevailing market conditions have resulted in new suburb record sale prices multiple times per month and the auction clearance rate consistently above 80%. In these conditions, it is easy for buyers to think it is impossible to find value opportunities, however, I strongly disagree. The best value buying opportunities are not only hiding in plain sight, but they also exist in the most affordable part of the market. The most obvious early indicators of where to find value opportunities entered our public domain on 17 April, when Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and Minister for Housing Michael Sukkar issued a joint media release identifying challenges faced within the construction industry. “The Government’s decision to provide existing [HomeBuilder] applicants with an additional 12 months to commence construction responds to unanticipated delays in the construction industry

caused by COVID-19-related supply constraints including delays in global supply chains and recent natural disasters.” On the same day, Denita Wawn, CEO of Master Builders Australia said, “The scale of the HomeBuilder success – more than 120,000 HomeBuilder applications have created huge pressure on the supply chain with Master Builders Australia’s survey of the industry showing that 70% of builders are being hit by delays and cost increases for key trades and building products.” Pressure on costs and delivery timeframes caused the Federal Government to give builders an extra 12 months to commence HomeBuilder eligible jobs. Across the rest of the market, it appears unlikely delivery timeframes will be met for jobs which haven’t started coming out of the ground. Off-plan multi-unit dwellings where construction has not commenced are the single biggest opportunity for buyers to take advantage of in Canberra. For 5% of purchase price, buyers can exchange and lock in a price at today’s
the third and fourth stages of the Braddon development – Dawn and SOL – ‘topping out’ this week, on Tuesday 20 April. Construction on the two final stages of the precinct began in May last year with completion expected for the last quarter of 2021. Between them, Dawn and SOL will be home to 448 one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, taking the entire Founders Lane precinct to 781 apartments alongside commercial tenancies. Residents are expected to begin moving in from early 2022. JWLand’s national head of development, Michael Prendergast, said this is the first project undertaken by the company since it established its own construction arm. “By controlling the process from planning and design, right through construction to the sales and marketing of our projects, we can ensure that a higher quality result is delivered to our occupants,” he said. The project’s milestone was commemorated with a topping out ceremony where a tree was raised to the rooftop as per tradition.

values. This shifts the risk of cost increases and delays onto the developer and allows the buyer to participate in an upward cycle. According to CoreLogic data, multi-unit values increased by 2.3%, or $11,500 on a $500,000 purchase price, during the March quarter (January-March 2021). Often the best opportunities within the property market can only be capitalised on by sophisticated participants with the financial resources to do so. This makes it rare to have a simple opportunity, requiring basic research on the buyer’s part and a 5% deposit to enable the least sophisticated participants in the property market to capitalise on supply chain inefficiencies identified by both government and industry, within a cycle where property values are rapidly increasing. Editor’s note: Sam Dodimead is the listing agent for a number of developments where off-plan purchases can be made.
YWCA secures approval for 10 social housing dwellings YWCA Canberra has been given the green light to build 10 affordable homes for women experiencing housing crisis. YWCA Canberra CEO Frances Crimmins said the project would be built on YWCA-owned land in Ainslie and while it would only make a small dent in the shortfall of social housing in the ACT, it would make a huge difference in the lives of women escaping domestic and family violence. “In December 2020, there were more than 1,000 women in Canberra registered with Specialist Housing Services,” Ms Crimmins said. “The majority were homeless or in housing crisis due to domestic or family violence. “We currently have women in our housing services who are in their 80s and 90s.” The Mental Health Community Coalition of the ACT (MHCC ACT) and ACT Shelter both backed the project. MHCC ACT CEO Bec Cody said the prioritisation of housing vulnerable groups leads to improved wellbeing, while ACT Shelter CEO Travis Gilbert said the project would add muchneeded affordable rental supply to the Inner North.

When it comes to your future goals, listen to your instincts or intuition. Material rewards could be on the horizon. The Full Moon on 27 April puts you in a go-ahead mood career wise, however you need to be careful of acting impulsively and stepping on toes of important people.
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR
Entertainment and social activities with good friends will come your way this week. The Full Moon on 27 April puts you in an edgy mood and other people’s anxieties will have a way of rubbing off on you. So, if you want peace, try to steer clear of moaners.
The Full Moon on 27 April indicates that you long for freedom, romance or the perfect excuse to be yourself but the chores and responsibilities keep piling up and calling your name. Be sure to take time for some recreational or social activities. Travel plans could cross your mind.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY The Full Moon on 27 April is a strange time with relationships and you are likely to lose your patience with your loved ones. Sudden changes connected to your work area could occur. The key to this situation is adaptation, otherwise the changes could be very hard to accept.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE The Full Moon on 27 April indicates that old grievances and resentments are likely to cause havoc unless you address them. You might be extra busy with friends or charitable activities, potentially connected to your work or business. Useful news could reach you about your position in the community.
The Full Moon on 27 April indicates you need to be careful how you handle things on the domestic front, as it appears you may not be prepared to accept anyone else’s point of view but your own! It could be time for a more philosophical outlook on life.
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT The Full Moon on 27 April indicates that a friend may be a bit of a loose cannon as you don’t know what is going to come out of their mouth next. You may be worried that they are going to reveal one of your deepest, darkest secrets.

My favourite things
ARTWORKS
Photo Kerrie Brewer
My artworks I painted many years ago – portraits of Coco Chanel, John Lennon and Leonardo Da Vinci. I can’t part ways with them.
Louise Taffa
Women in Football Australia member and BBC Sport contributor
HEIRLOOM BRACELETS Bracelets my grandmother gave me. I adore these, I wear them every day. I’m the third generation to receive them.
Louise Taffa started playing “the world’s game” as a Cooma Tiger at age five, in an effort to emulate her cool older brother. Football has been part of her life ever since. As a journalist, Louise has co-authored a book on female entrepreneurs, worked as a media assistant in the W-League, and joined Women in Football as a board member. She continues to champion the sport in the region, with a keen interest in the development of - Rosa Ritchie young players.
FIFA MEDAL When I covered the FIFA U20 World Cup in Korea in 2017, FIFA gave me a medal as a gift.
MY NIKON My camera. I love taking photos pitchside at football games (when I have time).
