This week... Back in the 1960s, our entire primary school was volunteered to enter a competition to create a slogan and image for a new anti-litter campaign. From memory, imaginative drawings of litter bugs and pleas to not be one were on trend; this was long before the “putitinabin” and “tosser” campaigns of later decades. I raise this is as a soft intro into a rare rant about litter. Driving around our beautiful city lately, I’ve been struck by the appalling amount of rubbish strewn across the burbs – including what appeared to be takeaway meal packaging for an entire carload of people dumped outside the local school. Before any tossers litter, please be aware the world is not your garbage bin, so treat it with respect. Not only is litter unsightly, but it can cause all kinds of problems for wildlife and our waterways if it enters the stormwater system. Hanging onto rubbish until it can be disposed of properly is way better than polluting. What’s frustrating is why we’re still having this conversation six decades on. Reasons to be grateful this past week include a restorative long weekend, therapeutic gardening and yoga sessions, regular wheelie bin collections, nourishing green smoothies and curried pumpkin soup, the marvel of flight and visiting my parents and relatives in Cairns for Dad’s 84th birthday. Many happy returns! - Julie Samaras

Jetstar announces Canberra-Brisbane fights Jetstar will fly into Canberra for the first time in the budget airline’s history, with a Canberra to Brisbane service launching on 2 September – just ahead of Floriade’s return to
Commonwealth Park in spring. The low-cost carrier announced last week it will operate five return services a week between Canberra and the Queensland Capital on an Airbus A320 aircraft.
“I think the domestic aviation network is as strong as it’s ever been out of Canberra,” said ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr. “Jetstar’s entry to the Canberra market will not only make travel from South East Queensland to Canberra cheaper and easier, but it will provide an opportunity to work with the popular carrier to promote our city across their extensive network,” he said. Jetstar CEO Gareth Evans said he expects the route would be immediately popular and didn’t rule out exploring other routes to and from Canberra. “Canberrans are probably no different to other people, they like to go on holiday. So we expect to see a lot of demand outbound from Canberra [to Brisbane], but Canberra’s a great place to visit as well,” he said.
Just in time for Floriade Jetstar’s September arrivals mean the airline is set to bring passengers from Brisbane just in time for the ACT’s annual flower
festival. Floriade 2021 will run from 11 September to 10 October, and Mr Barr said it’s expected to bring a welcome boost to the ACT’s tourism sector. The ACT Government is hoping for more than half a million visitors to this year’s event to inject more than $50 million to the local economy. The theme for this year’s festival is ‘the future of flowers’, set to focus on sustainability. Floriade will this year see one million bulbs planted in Commonwealth Park, as well as another 300,000 in Canberra’s suburbs after last year’s successful pandemic-induced community pivot. NightFest will be back, too, with four nights of live entertainment from 30 September to 3 October. “It’s going to be a great celebration of spring,” Mr Barr said. “And it’s a great time to showcase the city to tourists.” - Libby Kimber
‘Routine audit’ being conducted into ChooseCBR The ACT Government is conducting a “routine audit” of their ChooseCBR voucher scheme after nearly $400,000 worth of discounts was claimed in the first 48 hours of the program. On Friday 11 June, the scheme was suspended for seven days after customers and businesses were plagued with technical difficulties implementing the vouchers at the point of sale and even just accessing the website. An ACT Government spokesperson told Canberra Weekly an audit into the use of funds, an “inherent part of the scheme design”, was initiated last week. “The audit process has not indicated any misuse at this point,” they said. 6
canberraweekly.com.au
“ACT Government is also working with more than 80 businesses to reimburse vouchers that they honoured but were not able to redeem.” Shortly after the scheme was suspended, ACT opposition business spokesperson Leanne Castley MLA expressed scepticism around the legitimacy of the $400,000 claimed in two days. “My question is how on earth has there been that much spent on a scheme that so far the website has been down for most of the time,” she said. “I would love to know where the vouchers have been claimed because from all accounts there’s been only a handful of shops that have actually been able to make those vouchers work.”
Ms Castley said the suspension of the scheme was frustrating for both businesses and consumers. “It is simply not fair and unacceptable for business owners, staff and customers to be put in this position.” Around $389,950 worth of vouchers were claimed in the first two days of ChooseCBR after it went live on Wednesday 9 June, which far exceeded the $30,000 a day claimed in the December 2020 trial. After being taken down last week, work has been conducted on the ChooseCBR system to improve its capacity to deal with “the very high volume of customer and business activity simultaneously”. “A solution continues to be implemented and is being

political capital Common sense dumped in West Belconnen Whenever the Federal Parliament sits, Canberra’s hotel rooms and coffee shops fill with Fly In Fly Out lobbyists. Their pleas for preferential treatment for one client or another resonate around Parliament House, particularly the Ministerial Wing. But the most effective lobbyists in Canberra, by far, are the homegrown ones – determined local residents with a bee in their bonnet and a burning issue to prosecute. A federal minister might have the luxury of showing the door to an interstate carpetbagger, but an ACT minister who ignores a residents’ action committee backed by a 500-name petition can find themselves in a world of hurt. That Canberrans make excellent lobbyists should come as no surprise. So many of them have worked in the public service, they know a government’s weaknesses and pressure points with the same precision that an acupuncturist inserts needles in a patient. It has to be said that some of the issues pursued by grassroots Canberra lobbyists in the past have been nothing less than self interest dressed up as public interest. Many higher density housing developments have been opposed by
well-organised residents’ groups, some of which advanced arguments which, with the benefit of hindsight, now appear utterly spurious. But not every campaign to preserve local amenity is mere selfishness writ large. Take, for example, the proposed closure of the West Belconnen green waste facility at the end of this month. Local residents have made a good case that closing a facility that permits recycling of garden waste is sheer stupidity. There is a free garden waste recycling facility at Mugga Lane, serving Canberra’s southside. The closure of its northern equivalent at West Belconnen will mean, for some, a 50km round trip to dispose of their green waste. The fact that both facilities have been free to use is important. Canberra residents are, characteristically, avid gardeners, and the recycling – rather than the dumping – of garden waste is in everybody’s interests. But charging people to recycle (which is what will happen if Belconnen residents are forced to use fee-charging facilities at Mitchell) will discourage the urge to be environmentally and socially responsible.
WITH GARY HUMPHRIES AO, FORMER ACT CHIEF MINISTER AND ACT SENATOR
I expect many northerners will grumble but still undertake the 50km recycling expedition. That, of course, comes at a cost to the environment; Liberal MLAs have calculated that the change will cause an additional 100,000km of vehicle emissions every month. The ACT Government claims that green waste bins, now available (at a cost) to Belconnen residents will remove the need for recycling pilgrimages to Mugga Lane. Really? Any resident of Canberra will tell you that a 240-litre bin, emptied fortnightly, is woefully inadequate when heavy pruning and mowing is necessary in our warmer months. The government is also conducting a review of recycling arrangements. The catch? It won’t be released until after the Belconnen facility closes. The operators of the West Belconnen facility want to keep it going. Surely an alternative arrangement, or an alternative site, can be found.

news Labor has lost its way and its heart, says Lee On a bleak winter morning, the picture of Canberra that Liberals leader Elizabeth Lee painted was bleaker still. Some of the worst hospital waiting times in Australia. Overcrowded, crumbling schools and declining academic standards. Deplorable, unliveable public housing. The highest rental costs in the country. Thousands waiting for public housing while hundreds of properties sat empty. Skyrocketing electricity prices and rates. A failing prison with the highest Indigenous incarceration rates in the country. The lowest police numbers per capita in Australia. Broken and neglected footpaths, roads, and streetlights. And nearly 40,000 Canberrans living in poverty. These, Ms Lee argued last Thursday, 10 June, were the result of a complacent ACT Labor that had been in power for too long, and had forgotten about the people it was there to serve. The government promotes Canberra as a progressive town. The nation’s renewable energy capital. The country’s second strongest economy, with the lowest unemployment rate. Australia’s most inclusive city, the world’s fifth healthiest city, the world’s most sustainable city. A clean, green, modern
city of light rail and electric vehicles, of national parks and rainbow roundabouts, home to an educated, urbane, prosperous citizenry. “So look, really, Opposition [are] scratching for something to say at the moment,” ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr said. Ms Lee’s remarks may be political grandstanding, as Mr Barr implied. The Canberra Liberals are determined to win the election in 2024, and believe that under Ms Lee they can take power for the first time since 2001. Having been defeated at the polls six times in a row, their election campaign must begin early to convince Canberrans they are a viable alternative. But the Liberals may well have a point. While the ACT under Mr Barr is perhaps the most forward-thinking jurisdiction in the country, many Canberrans feel left behind. Poor families struggling to pay rent in Australia’s most expensive city. Indigenous people appalled by the racist ‘bloodbath’ of the Alexander Maconochie Centre. Patients waiting up to seven hours in hospital corridors, or a year and a half for a bowel cancer check. Public housing tenants in mouldy flats that leak whenever it rains, that lack electricity or locks,
fearing police (overworked and under resourced) will arrive an hour too late. Small businesses feeling the government won’t listen, doesn’t care. Stories this magazine and other Canberra publications have reported on this year. While the government is making the biggest investment in public housing in the ACT’s history, and expanding the Canberra Hospital, they have also rejected motions put forward by the Liberals on behalf of those Canberrans most concerned. Ms Lee claimed that while the Canberra Liberals advocated for hospitals and education, liveable public housing, funding certainty for free legal services, and law reform on domestic and family violence and on sexual assault (“stealthing”), Labor wasted time talking about “divorcing Parliament House” (a motion to make Canberra a park city), or “backflipping” on a debate about Gungahlin land sales. “The Government needs to get back to basics and ensure they are addressing significant problems affecting the community,” Ms Lee said. - Nick Fuller Read two more detailed stories on this topic at canberraweekly.com.au

news Meet the ‘reading dawgz’ helping students with literacy
Photo Kerrie Brewer
Each week, students at The Galilee School eagerly await the arrival of some extra special visitors. The Rainbow Paws ‘Reading Dawgz’ – poodles Tilly and Seeker, and Robbie the westie – visit the Communities@Work school in Kambah weekly, ready to listen to a story or two so the students can improve their reading skills. Galilee School teacher Mel Smith said she was knocked back by another organisation about implementing a reading-with-dogs

program, so Rainbow Paws president Natarsha Lawrence sprang into action, despite it being outside the realm of the organisation’s usual work. Ms Lawrence rounded up some volunteers with trained therapy dogs, and the Reading Dawgz program was born, with Tilly, Seeker and Robbie heading to the school on a one-term trial. “The most positive thing from the students was they actually wanted to read,” Ms Smith said. “We have a ‘stage not age’ approach in the school, so we may have students who are 12 to 17 years old, but their reading level is not yet at the age that they are and getting them to actually want to read is very challenging. “We had some really disengaged students who would come to school just for the day for Reading Dawgz.” The Galilee School caters for children in years seven to 12 who are considered vulnerable, disengaged or for whom mainstream schooling hasn’t resulted in positive outcomes.
The Reading Dawgz are now into their third term with the school, and Rainbow Paws recently received a grant from the Federal Government’s Stronger Communities Programme which will allow the program to continue – buying beds and uniforms for the dogs and volunteers and books for the students. “So not only the students in the program benefit because at the end of the grant, we’ll actually donate all the books to the school,” said Ms Lawrence. “It’s amazing how a small grant can help connect some pretty amazing services we already have in Canberra,” said David Smith MP, Federal Member for Bean, who presented Rainbow Paws with their grant last week. As well, Communities@Work received grant funding for flags to fly outside both their school campuses in Holder and Kambah. Rainbow Paws typically works with vulnerable Canberrans and their pets, providing services such as subsidised vet care, emergency boarding and distributing food and supplies. - Libby Kimber

CEO Sleepout champion braves cold for sixth year Sitting outside on a cold night, Dr Stephen Lising began crying as he realised the desperation, frustration and embarrassment homeless people feel every day in Canberra. It was 2018 and he was doing an interactive exercise as part of the Vinnies CEO Sleepout, reading a script of a woman forced to flee domestic violence with her children, leaving everything, including her wallet, behind. As a father of three, having to pretend to beg for food, money, and shelter to protect children provided him with a glimpse of what over 1,000 Canberrans face every day. “That really hit hard for me, because that brought home that homeless people are actually kids … they are kids who, a few months ago, may have had a perfectly happy life,” he said. Five years later, Dr Lising is one of the Vinnies CEO Sleepout Champions, personally raising more than $50,000 for the charity. Tonight, Thursday 17 June, business, government and community leaders across the Canberra/Goulburn region will be gathering on one of the longest nights of the year to help change the lives of Australians experiencing homelessness. Dr Lising will be sleeping rough at the National Arboretum, but he admits the very first time he did the sleepout in 2013, he swore he would never do it again. “It was freezing cold, I didn’t expect it to be like that … it was just not fun,” he said. “It wasn’t until I was driving to work in 2018 and it was all frosty outside and I heard on the radio that the Sleepout was on again that I thought ‘No, the reason I should be doing it is it’s actually helping others’.” According to the latest ABS
Census data, 1,596 ACT residents were homeless on census night in 2016, with 351 young adults between the ages of 12-24 years experiencing homelessness in the Territory. Passionate about helping vulnerable people, in 2020 when the Vinnies CEO Sleepout moved to participants’ homes in response to COVID-19, Dr Lising asked his wife, Dr Ann Duong, and their 12-yearold son, Oliver, to join him to learn what it’s like to sleep rough. This year, the couple’s young daughters, eight-year-old Hanna and six-year-old Sofie, will be joining in the Sleepout as well. “Ann is going to be sleeping in the car with the three kids … hopefully this year, my girls will also gain an understanding of homelessness and how to be charitable,” he said. Also joining Dr Lising is his extended family, 11 staff members from Preventive Dentistry who will be sleeping outside, in cars and in the dental practice itself. “I joined the practice when I was 23 years old and that was in 1997, so I’ve actually worked in this practice for half of my life … Our staff are like a big family,” he said. In total, the Preventive Dentistry team has raised over $80,000 for Vinnies over five years. While Barnie van Wyk, CEO of St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn, said that following the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 he was dreading the release of homeless and poverty figures, Dr Lising is still optimistic about helping those in need. “It makes me feel like I’ve really made a difference to a lot of people and that’s what you hope for in life, to be remembered for something,” he said. Perfect for students, small business or those who need a little bit of help, Aero Accounting aims to provide stress-free peace of mind experience to the Canberra community. Founded in 2020 by Justin Wong, Aero Group is targeting a niche and in demand market. “We were testing the market and we figured out there was a gap in providing really, really good quality tax services to individual clients at an affordable price in Canberra,” he said. “What we’ve realised what clients want from their accountant is someone to be able to walk them through step-by-step and explain it to them in a clear language that they understand.”
The experienced team of accountants at Aero Group have all the qualifications necessary to handle any accounting task quickly and easily, from a 15-minute lodgement of a tax return to ensuring clients get the maximum refund possible. Mr Wong said it was his own experiences as a student that inspired the motto ‘tax made easy’. “When I was a student, I would pay someone to do my taxes and I felt the experience wasn’t that great ... there was a lack of personalisation,” he said. “You would go into the accountant’s office; you would meet whoever was available to you and you would just get your thing done.” “It was just a go and get it done approach, whereas what we prefer to do is that if you saw a certain accountant last year, we will try our best to ensure that you get the same accountant this year.”
Mr Wong is originally from Malaysia and can converse in multiple languages which include English, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Malay. With over seven years’ experience working in accounting and book-keeping, he knows what it takes to help individuals and small businesses make informed decisions and ensure they maximise their financial and taxation outcomes. With teams based in Canberra, Sydney, and Malaysia, Aero Accounting offers both online and phone tax returns, under 21 tax returns, multi-year tax returns and more. Aero Accounting Group is Mr Wong’s second business. As the founder of PAQ Group, a locally
based bookkeeping and payroll services firm that aims to provide small business owners with a stressfree bookkeeping experience, he is passionate about helping locals. “I did my Honours in Finance at the University of Canberra...I used to work in cafes and restaurants, and I would help them with their bookkeeping.” “Once we conquer the individual tax return market in Canberra, we can start thinking about other services that we can potentially offer our clients.” With no up-front payments and guaranteed satisfaction, Aero Accounting Group are the team guaranteed to make tax as simple as one, two, three.

to the editor ‘Climate catastrophe’ not true
Females don’t need statues as role models
Columnist Gary Humphries (CW, 3 June 2021) thinks that it is okay to
Re the article on ‘Petition calls for more statues of women’ (CW, 10 June 2021, p16), Ms Orr noted “of 30 gendered sculptures listed, 16 were of men”. That is just above half. We keep getting told to erase history as it is irrelevant so why bother having statues at all. Ms Orr states that girls and women need role models on which to model themselves. They can do this by learning about history and this might be recent history, or even just trying to be the best they can at whatever they want to achieve in life. Females have been doing this for decades and did not need statues as role models. What is it with the “Old White Men”? These are part of our history and if the statue was a woman, say Caroline Chisholm who was a 19th-century English humanitarian, she would be an old white woman. Without these “Old White Men” we may not have the life we have now. What role models does Ms Orr have in mind and what did they do for Australia?
chant the “F...” word at the Prime Minister of Australia. Quite sad really when he also states that global warming is the greatest threat to humanity that requires urgent action. … With records being broken around the country for low temperatures and record rainfalls, it would be good of Gary to explain to the thousands of Canberra school children that were taught through the documentary The Inconvenient Truth (sic) from climate “expert” Al Gore how it was never going to snow again and places like the Maldives would be under water by now. Considering this was part of the ACT School Curriculum 15 years ago, it seems neither of these predictions have come true. Like another “Climate alarmist”, Australia’s own Tim Flannery, who predicted years ago that our dams were never going to fill again and places like Perth would be ghost cities, our dams are now full and Perth looks like a pretty good place to be, who is holding these “prophets” to account and why are we indoctrinating our vulnerable children with such lies? Like Gary says, “no matter how strongly we feel about climate change,
- V. Evans, MacGregor
that outcome is deeply worrying”, so why are we forcing this “climate catastrophe” on our kids when the facts show that a lot of it is simply not true. Could it be that it is the main political point of a certain political party and one that they hope would score votes from younger voters who are
Consider your local public school
mercilessly taught this at schools and universities? - Pilsner, Weston
In his article ‘Parents voting with their feet on school failings’ (CW, 10 June 2021, p12) Gary Humphries refers to parents of students attending public schools as “insiders”. As one of those “insiders”, I find his article simplistic and misleading. His article implies that students are leaving ACT public schools in droves. This is not borne out by the statistics. The latest ACT Schools Census of February 2020 found that enrolments at ACT public schools have grown by 12.1% since 2016, compared with a 5.1% increase at ACT private schools. Mr Humphries partly uses NAPLAN results to comment on the performance of ACT public schools. NAPLAN is administered in all schools and NAPLAN results reflect all school sectors. Mr Humphries bluntly states that “Resourcing of schools is not to blame”. Noting that Save Our Schools recently found that the income per student at independent schools in 2019 was over 50% higher than for public school students, I do not understand how he reaches this conclusion. My children are being educated in ACT public schools, with my oldest now in Year 12. Despite the significant funding disadvantage of public schools, my children receive quality education, supportive pastoral care and excellent extra-curricular opportunities such as the outstanding ACT Instrumental Music Program. I hope that no parent is swayed by this simplistic article and recommend all parents consider their local public school among their education options. - A. Jones, Duffy

sport Raiders record rare home win The Canberra Raiders managed their first home win since round one with a comprehensive 38-16 victory over the Brisbane Broncos at GIO Stadium on Saturday night, 12 June. The Raiders made a fast start with Sebastian Kris scoring the opening try before Corey Harawira-Naera sliced through the defence to give Canberra a 10-0 lead after 16 minutes. Sam Williams and Emre Guler added another two tries to give the Raiders a 22-10 lead at the break. Given Canberra’s second half woes this season, first points after the break were always going to be crucial and it was Josh Papalii who delivered from close-range to help settle the Raiders’ nerves. Winger Semi Valemei was the next to cross after some nice
lead-up work from fullback Bailey Simonsson to extend the Raiders’ lead to 32-10. Fresh off a huge State of Origin Game I victory for NSW, Jack Wighton put the finishing touches on the win with a brilliant individual try to secure the Raiders’ fifth win of the season. Simonsson was one of the standouts for the Green Machine, running for 243 metres and adding two try assists in his first game at fullback. Young centre Matt Timoko showed plenty of promise in his first game of the season and Papalii was outstanding in his return from suspension. The tenth placed Raiders will look to jump into the top eight when they travel to Wollongong to take on the Dragons on Saturday 19 June at 5.30pm.
Brumbies’ season over The Brumbies’ 2021 season finished with a heavy 33-12 defeat to New Zealand rivals, the Highlanders at GIO Stadium on Friday night, 11 June. The Highlanders were playing for a spot in the Super Rugby Trans Tasman Grand Final and Aaron Smith proved the difference with a two try display.
The Brumbies managed to score first through Len Ikitau before the Highlanders hit back with two quick tries of their own. Lachlan Lonergan scored before half time to bring the Brumbies back to with 14-12 at the break. It was all the Highlanders after half time as they ran in three tries to none to secure the 21-point win.

Roti jala Serves 4 150g (1 cup) plain flour 1/4 tsp salt
To make the sambal, place the red onion, garlic, drained dried chillies, dried anchovies, belacan and 100ml of the oil in a food processor or blender and process to form a paste. Pour the remaining oil into a frying pan and heat over medium heat. Add the chilli paste and cook, stirring regularly, for 4–5 minutes until it turns a darker shade of red and the oil has separated. Add the sugar and cook for another minute to let it caramelise with the sambal. Add the tamarind paste and 125ml (1/2 cup) water and cook, stirring, for 3 minutes or until the sambal has thickened slightly. Season to taste with salt and extra sugar if needed. Keep in mind that the sambal should be a good balance of sweet, spicy and sour flavours. Wash the rice until the water runs clear, then tip it into a rice cooker. Add the coconut cream and 500ml (2 cups) water and stir in the ginger, salt and pandan leaves. Leave to soak for 5–10 minutes, then switch the rice cooker on and cook the rice according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Lightly fluff up the cooked rice with a fork or a wooden spoon. Serve immediately with the sambal, egg, cucumber, peanuts and dried anchovies.
1/4 tsp ground turmeric 1 egg 180ml (3/4 cup) coconut milk mixed with 180 ml (3/4 cup) water Vegetable oil, for pan-frying Place all the ingredients except the oil in a clean bowl and stir until well combined. Strain the batter into another bowl. Use a stick blender if needed to get a really smooth texture. Heat a medium frying pan over medium heat and lightly brush with oil. Pour a ladleful of batter into a roti jala cup and move over the frying pan in an overlapping circular motion to create the lacy effect. Leave the batter to cook until set, roughly 2 minutes, then slide the pancake onto a plate and allow to cool slightly. Fold in both sides of the pancake, then roll it up to form a neat roll. Repeat with the remaining batter. You should have enough to make about 10 pancakes. Serve the roti jala with your choice of curry. Recipes extracted from Penang Local by Aim Aris and Ahmad Salim, out now from Smith Street Books, RRP $39.99.

Tasmania getaway: five days during the Off Season At the end of May, Canberra Weekly spent five days in Tasmania, experiencing some of what is on offer during the Off Season - exquisite food, wine, coffee, culture, and nature of the Hobart region, visiting Port Arthur, Bruny Island and the Tasmanian capital itself. While the winter may bring the island some wet and wind, it also instils it with beautiful soft light, glorious afternoon sun, and that snug sense of cosiness Canberrans are so familiar with. The flights Long revered as one of Australia’s finest domestic travel destinations, getting to Tasmania from Canberra has become a whole lot easier thanks to direct flights with Link Airways. Hopping across the Bass Strait on the Saab 340 Turboprop was a dream. Arriving 15 minutes early in both directions, it felt much faster than the two hours we spent in the air thanks to favourable conditions and exceptional service from the crew.
TASMAN PENINSULA Arriving at Hobart, we promptly collected our hire car, an upgraded Kia Cerato, from Budget. From there it was an easy 90-minute cruise along the Arthur Highway to historic Port Arthur, with gorgeous natural scenery hugging the road through the Forestier and Tasman peninsulas.
What we saw Arriving mid-afternoon, we headed straight to the Port Arthur Historic Site to soak up not 30

just the history, but the sheer spectacle of the sprawling former convict settlement. That night we visited the McHenry Distillery for an evening tour and an exclusive look at their observation deck as they put the finishing touches on a very cool silo conversion that will be a fully functional observatory when completed. Nestled on the side of Mt Arthur, Bill and Allison have run McHenry’s for the past decade.
Where we stayed In luxury accommodation at Stewarts Bay Lodge. On the edge of an amazing untouched coastal reserve and overlooking the water, our lodging felt like a well-appointed family home surrounded by nature, which imbued a sense of privacy.
Where we ate At the On The Bay restaurant. On the site of our accommodation, the fancy, cosy digs has an extensive menu featuring fresh seafood and local produce, and a specially selected Tasmanian wine list.
Heading off from Port Arthur, we stopped in Hobart for lunch before taking the easy 40-minute drive down the Channel Highway to the ferry at Kettering. The highly convenient 20-minute ferry is a breeze. The $38 return ticket for a standard car is reasonable, and the efficient, convenient service runs regularly throughout the day.
What we saw We were notified well in advance that our Bruny Island Cruise had been cancelled due to poor weather. Their award-winning three-hour Wilderness Cruise explores the rugged coastline alongside some of Australia's highest sea cliffs and into deep sea caves. When the weather cleared that afternoon, we got our nature fix walking the Cape Queen Elizabeth Track. Starting out just off the main road you’ll walk through the bush for approximately 45 minutes. Upon reaching the coastline, you’re greeted by breathtaking sea cliff faces with archways leading you from one cove to the next.
Where we stayed At Free Spirit Pods on North Bruny. We had the extremely cute ‘Flying Duck’ pod, that was well-appointed with a fully equipped kitchen, an ensuite bathroom with in-floor heating, a wood pellet heater, floor to ceiling bi-fold doors offering gorgeous views across the water, and wallabies that regularly pop by for a feed and to say hello! Nestled alongside the Quarantine Station National Park, the surrounds are spectacular.
Where we ate Famed for its local produce, the amazing fresh oysters on offer at Get Shucked, farmed directly off Bruny Island, are a must. I polished off two dozen natural freshies and am still dreaming about them. The team at Bruny Island Honey have been collecting honey on Bruny for more than 20 years, with over 400 hives on the island! A must for any sweet tooths and a great shop for gift buying (make sure to grab some for yourself too). (continued page 32)

HOBART and surrounds What we saw Set in Tasmania’s Huon Valley, the Tahune Adventures park offers a host of activities depending on how brave you are! The famous Tahune AirWalk is an elevated walkway 30 metres above the forest floor, with the final cantilever section sitting at a height of 50 metres above the Huon River. And if heights aren’t your thing, other walks offer a great peek at the river and surrounds. Visiting five local vineyards, the
Coal Valley Wine Tour gave us a great sampling of the local cool climate wines and a sense of the region’s unique agricultural history. Specialising in Pinot Noir and sparklings, the Coal Valley is the same distance from the equator as Burgundy and Champagne in France. With the region just half an hour out of Hobart and so many of the vineyards close to one another, the day flowed beautifully with good company and even better vino!
Where we stayed At the Crowne Plaza Hobart. Right in the heart of town, the recently built hotel is extraordinarily well appointed. The stylish, functional rooms come with all the bells and whistles plus views either side of the building; and the extremely professional and welcoming staff go out of their way to accommodate guests.

Where we ate Delightful inner-city café Straight Up Coffee and Food does excellent coffee and has a delicious vegetarian/vegan all-day breakfast menu. With an eclectic layout of mix-and-match furniture, it’s often chock-full of locals popping in for a quick coffee or a tasty brekky.
Specialty roasters Zimmah Coffee operate out of a cool semi-industrial setup just a short walk from the town centre. Evocative of Canberra’s own coffee roasters, Zimmah is a local institution sure to impress Canberra’s fussiest coffee connoisseurs. Highly recommended.

Now showing In the Heights (PG) Outside a small beachside store, Usnavi de la Vega (Anthony Ramos) tells a small group of children the story of Washington Heights. Flashing back, and we watch Usnavi as he opens a small corner shop in the Heights and goes about his day, meeting his friends and family on the block who all have their own sueñito (little dream). Based on the stage musical by Lin-Manuel Miranda, best known for global phenomenon Hamilton, this movie is a celebration of colour, community and hope for a better life. The cast and characters all harbour dreams of a better future for themselves and their loved ones, while acknowledging the legacy of hard work and sacrifice that brought them to New York. Each character struggles
with the want for moving on with their lives against the want of staying with their family and home in the Heights. The movie is at its strongest during the Latino dance sequences, showing off the fantastic talents of our leads of relative unknowns. Like Hamilton however, the singing is wispy with simple lyrics, worlds away from gutsy, standout musicals like Jesus Christ Superstar, Little Shop of Horrors and contemporary classic, The Greatest Showman. The story also lacks a strong core obstacle and high stakes, instead being more of an exploration of the characters. Verdict: Fans of Miranda’s work may get more out of this outing. 3 stars. In the Heights is showing at Dendy and Palace cinemas. Luke McWilliams | themovieclub.net

New children’s book is the dog’s bark! Drawing inspiration from music and noise, local children’s book author Catherine Meatheringham is back with a bang – and a bark! After publishing her first book My Possum Plays the Drums in 2020, Meatheringham is eagerly awaiting the launch of her newest book All Dogs Bark, illustrated by Deb Hudson.
Author of My Possum Plays the Drums, Catherine Meatheringham is looking forward to the launch of her newest children’s book, All Dogs Bark. Photo: Grace Carr.
Débuting at The Book Cow in Kingston, All Dogs Bark takes the reader on a journey around the world as they learn about the different sounds attributed to dogs. “I was researching dog onomatopoeia for a different story, and I came across this lovely list of different sounds dogs make. In Russia it’s gavgav and in France it’s jappe-jappe for small dogs and I just thought it was so beautiful,” she said. Designed to be loud without any need for batteries, Meatheringham wants children to join in with the noisy fun of her books. My Possum Plays the Drums is a shortlisted Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year 2020, something she is proud of. “I love noisy stories and sounds and words,” she said. “When I was on maternity leave with my son, I ran a little playgroup for toddlers where I would come in and read a story and they interact with the story with musical instruments … I wanted to write books where I could see them being read in preschool and the kids actually get to join in with the story by making noise.”
While Matheringham said All Dogs Bark took only a month to write, compared to her usual average of two years, the story had been simmering in her head for years. As a dog owner, she is often inspired by the things around her. The idea for her first book My Possum Plays the Drums popped into her head after a long, sleepless night. “I couldn’t sleep because a possum was running up and down the roof all night and every noise, thumps, the hissing, kind of sounded like musical instruments,” she said. “I thought there’s a story there … it’s something kids can relate to because every kid in Australia has a possum on the roof type story!” In her everyday work, Meatheringham writes fact sheets and resources for the government, but said writing children’s books is a fun way for her to express her creativity. All Dogs Bark will officially launch at The Book Cow on Saturday 24 July, with two inside sessions at 10am and 2pm and a 12pm outside one for dogs! RVSP to The Book Cow on (02) 5100 2730.

This week, Jeff Popple reviews three fascinating new history books. More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com King Richard by Michael Dobbs Scribe, $35
The chaos of the Trump presidency and the various impeachment attempts often invoked ill-informed reference to the final days of President Nixon. Now with King Richard, American journalist Michael Dobbs shows what really happened during the downfall of the Nixon presidency. Drawing on thousands of hours of newly released tape recordings, many made secretly by Nixon, Dobbs provides an intimate and absorbing narrative of the last hundred days of the presidency. A fascinating and informative read.
Convict-Era Port Arthur by David W. Cameron Viking, $34.99
Convict-Era Port Arthur by prolific Canberran historian David Cameron takes us back to Australia’s own dark days. With his usual readable style, Cameron provides a comprehensive, well-researched history of the Port Arthur penal settlement from the first arrival of the convicts till its closure in 1877. Using a variety of sources, including detailed archive records, Cameron tells the story of Port Arthur through the words of the soldiers, convicts and administrators who spent time there. Recommended.
The Platoon Commander by John O’Halloran with Ric Teague Hachette, $34.99
Informed accounts and histories of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War are now steadily coming out and this personal recollection by John O’Halloran is a very welcomed addition. O’Halloran was a Tamworth boy called up for national service early in the war. As a tough and determined 21-year-old, he guided his platoon through some of the biggest conflicts of the war, including the Battle of Long Tan and Operation Bribie. Long respected for his role in the War, O’Halloran’s personal story makes for compelling reading and deserves a wide audience.

wellbeing
Feel better in five minutes Posture has such a profound impact on our wellbeing. It impacts the way we breathe, how well our digestion functions and has a significant bearing on our circulation, our mood and mental health. Are you sitting up straighter already?
Many of us spend hours a day sitting at a desk, sitting in our cars on our commute to and from work, and then when we get home, we sit in chairs and lounges all of which encourage us to slouch, with shoulders rolling forwards and hips rolling backwards, core muscles switched off and lower back compressed. In this position, the movement of our diaphragm is constrained, resulting in shorter, shallower breaths and our digestive organs are squeezed. If you can’t breathe properly, your nervous system has a hard time moving into states of relaxation which impacts your mood. Once this posture becomes habitual, our bodies adapt: crucial core postural muscles like the abdominal muscles and glutes weaken whilst other areas like the chest and shoulders and lower back adopt chronic patterns of tension. Whilst all this may sound pretty dire,
the good news is that our bodies, if given just a little help, are willing and able to change. Which bring me to today’s topic: my favourite stretch. The beauty of this stretch is that its super easy and it feels lovely, so there’s really no excuse! To begin: • Roll up a beach towel or a firm blanket into a sausage shape (if you have a swimming noodle or a foam roller at home you can use that instead) • Lie on the ground with the towel underneath you, supporting your whole spine from the back of your head to your tailbone • Let your arms come out to your sides around shoulder height • Keep your knees bent and have the soles of your feet on the floor • Stay in this position for one to five minutes, letting your shoulders and arms drop away to the floor This stretch should feel deliciously enjoyable. If it’s painful or even
WITH WESLEY SMITH DIRECTOR, LIVE WELL HOLISTIC WELLNESS CENTRE MANUKA livewellnaturally.com.au
uncomfortable then you’ll need to make adjustments: • Try lowering the height of the towel/blanket by rolling it less tightly • Bring your arms closer to the sides of your body • Put small cushions under your elbows or hands • If getting down to the floor (and back up again!) is a challenge, you can do this in bed; just add more height to the towel/blanket to compensate for the extra ‘give’ of the mattress I love doing this stretch in the evenings before I go to bed. It’s a lovely way to unravel the tensions of the day and set myself up for a good nights’ sleep.

in the garden WITH HORTICULTURIST TRACEY BOOL traceyboolgardenwriter.com Parliament House is home to multiple beehives, including open source, top bar, polystyrene and stingless (seasonal).
Parliament House has 23 hectares of gardens, including formal and informal, native and exotic.
Bees aplenty at Parliament House I was recently lucky enough to join a tour of Parliament House gardens as part of World Bee Day (20 May). Our guides were experienced head gardener Paul Jansen and volunteer head beekeeper Cormac Farrell. Paul said the grounds of Parliament House cover 33 hectares, including 23 hectares of gardens. The peripheral native gardens, where we spent much of our tour, cover a leisurely 9 hectares. To conserve precious water, the native gardens are no longer irrigated, excepting during the establishment phase. Cormac pointed out a beautiful red box (Eucalyptus polyanthemos) on our walk, saying it’s an excellent protein source for honeybees, and that it helps the hive build their colony in readiness for spring. An equally lovely red ironbark (Eucalyptus sideroxylon) was
described as being a useful winter foraging tree for pollinators, including the honeybee. There are multiple beehives in the peripheral native gardens at Parliament House, including open source (Flow Hive), top bar (Kenyan) and well-insulated polystyrene (BeeBox) styles, the former two of which are easy to inspect and with minimal disturbance to bees when harvesting honey. There is also a seasonal native stingless beehive, which holidays at Government House in Sydney over winter, for the warmth and comfort of its inhabitants. The hives are located in a sunny protected position with unobstructed access for efficient foraging and the safety of us human folk. Cormac has attached a BuzzBox Beekeeping App to the hives for external monitoring of conditions such as hive temperature, activity of the colony and
whether the queen bee is in residence or not. Cormac said the honey produced from the hives has an especially low residue due to IPM (Integrated Pest Management) practices at Parliament House, including the use of cultural control methods only in the peripheral native gardens. In fact, it’s some of the purest honey to have been tested in Australia. Cormac shared some fascinating bee facts with us on the walk, including: • It takes European honeybees 2 million flower visits to produce 1kg of honey. • One of a bee’s final tasks towards the end of its life is to scout for a food source. • Bees perform what is known as a waggle dance to direct the hive to a food source. Each waggle ‘circuit’ signals approximately 200m of travel required to reach the food source. The angle of the waggle indicates the direction for the bees to fly. • Canberra is home to approximately 200 species of native bees.

And to top it off, 11 Numiari Street enjoys views of its surrounds and a prime location on the street, opposite to reserve and walking distance to shops, schools and ovals in the suburb. “It offers sweeping views to the Gungahlin skyline and beyond and to the Brindabellas,” says Luton Gungahlin sales consultant, Stuart James. “There is nothing like it in the suburb, a complete one off – the location and the home.”

Feels like home Rivett 6 Morrell Place The increasingly popular Weston Creek suburb of Rivett is the ideal suburb for families to settle down, evidenced by the fact this fourbedroom family home is on the market for the first time in 43 years. “This home exudes a warm, welcoming, homely feel,” says Michael Potter Real Estate senior sales agent, Alisa Lawrence, of 6 Morell Place. “Loads of natural light streams into the formal lounge room and kitchen through beautiful feature skylights. “The family friendly cul-de-sac will appeal to those with young 46

kids, as will the generous front and rear gardens.” She says this home is perfectly suited for families who will appreciate the home’s separate living areas, as well as those who love to entertain. “The home is ideal for entertaining with a fabulous kitchen with so much storage you will struggle to fill it all up,” Lawrence says. “This area flows out to a large north-facing covered entertaining area overlooking beautiful private gardens.” On a nearly 850sqm block on a quiet cul-de-sac, the home boasts
a sleek and modern kitchen, a sunken lounge room with feature skylights, a family room off the kitchen with built-in cabinetry, and a separate dining area. There’s also evaporative cooling, ducted gas heating and internal access from the garage. “Those needing lots of parking space will be thrilled with the double remote garage, a drivethrough tandem carport and space for several cars on the wide driveway,” says Lawrence. “Ideal to securely accommodate work vehicles and trailers. “Positioned perfectly within this
family-minded suburb, the home is just a moment’s walk to the local shops, where a supermarket, café and bakery feature, and convenient to main roads to access all of Canberra.”

The Gungahlin suburb of Taylor is home to Margaret Hendry Primary School.
162 blocks sold at Taylor A recent four-day ballot saw 162 blocks sold at the Gungahlin suburb of Taylor, the Suburban Land Agency says. The blocks ranged from $355,000 to $525,000 in price, with an average size of 591sqm. The ballot was a sell-out, and Suburban Land Agency CEO John Dietz said the market continues to show confidence despite the difficult year that was 2020. “It’s pleasing to see the continued confidence and strong support Canberrans have for new land releases in Taylor,” he said.
“The new Gungahlin suburb offers a wide range of blocks, excellent community amenities and a natural setting. “It has been designed to be reminiscent of a traditional Canberra suburb.” Taylor is home to a primary school, two sporting fields, and there are plans for a local shopping precinct. Located 4km from the Gungahlin Town Centre, Taylor will be home to around 2,500 dwellings, both low and medium density. Additional land in the suburb is expected to be released in 2021-22.
Housing ACT had received more than 1,100 complaints related to maintenance and property condition, Mark Parton, Shadow Minister for Housing, said in April. But public housing tenants felt ignored and helpless when they sought help. As well, Canberra’s high density public housing complex, Kanangra Court, Reid, is unliveable, Liberals leader Elizabeth Lee said; the flats are full of mould, there are dead birds in the roof cavities, and maggots are falling from the ceiling. “It is extremely disappointing and concerning to see houses in the ACT in this condition,” Ms Lee said. “It is even more concerning that both Housing Ministers seem completely uninterested in fixing them.” A spokesperson for Housing Minister Yvette Berry said,
“Housing ACT works hard to ensure that public housing tenants live in safe, secure and well maintained homes”. “Currently there are no requests for maintenance that have been raised against these issues. However, Housing ACT is aware of the ongoing presence of pigeons at the complex and as a result, ongoing maintenance including pest control measures such as pigeon eradication, is conducted on an annual basis,” the spokesperson said. “Tenants are encouraged to raise any maintenance issues with Programmed. Housing ACT seeks to work directly with tenants to resolve any maintenance issues.” For more on this story, head to canberraweekly.com.au - Nick Fuller
ACT scores at REIA awards
Three ACT winners were announced at the Real Estate Institute of Australia’s national awards for excellence, held last week in Darwin. Belle Property Kingston was named as the Large Residential Agency of the Year, Claire Corby from Capital Buyers Agency took home the award for Buyers’ Agent of the Year; and Burgess Rawson’s Guy Randell was named Commercial Salesperson of the Year. The ACT was represented with finalists in 14 of the 20 categories.
Of the 20 awards, the ACT took out three along with Western Australia and Tasmania. New South Wales swept the categories with seven wins, and Victoria took out four. South Australia’s 2020 state awards for excellence were cancelled last year due to COVID-19, which meant there were no South Australian finalists at this year’s awards. The Real Estate Institute of the ACT (REIACT) recently opened nominations for this year’s Territory awards for excellence, to be held in October.
ACT public housing properties need repair: Canberra Liberals Most Canberrans would be horrified to see the state of many ACT public housing properties,
and the ACT Government hasn’t done anything to fix them, the Canberra Liberals claim.

celebrity birthday RICHARD MADDEN 18 June 1986 The coming 12 months will be a mixed year for Richard, during which he may experience many ups and downs. His career prospects look like improving over the next few months and he will want to be surrounded by good people to help him optimise any opportunities that come his way. Richard will need to curb any tendency towards arrogance if he wishes to maintain harmony at home.

in the stars ARIES 21 MAR – 20 APR
CANCER 22 JUNE – 22 JULY
LIBRA 24 SEPT – 23 OCT
CAPRICORN 22 DEC – 20 JAN
You may be unhappy in a relationship, but not know why and it is your intuition that will hold the keys to your problems. Perhaps you are dreaming of a past lover or fantasising about someone unobtainable. Be patient as the clarity you need will come to you.
Mercury retrograde in Gemini ends on 22 June, so expect any recent problems with communications, travel or technology to be resolved or disappear. Emotionally, you need to accept who you are and where you have come from and set about making the best of life.
You might have been feeling overly sensitive lately and could find yourself rising to the bait in any conversation that could easily turn into an argument. It may be best to keep your head down for a while. Problems should ease once Mercury retrograde in Gemini ends on 22 June.
Jupiter in your third house over the next few months means you’re bound to come up with some great new ideas and your mind will be working overtime. You’ll be so busy fielding phone calls and emails, that you’ll find yourself acting as a temporary secretary for a while.
TAURUS 21 APR – 21 MAY
LEO 23 JULY – 23 AUG
SCORPIO 24 OCT – 22 NOV
AQUARIUS 21 JAN – 19 FEB
Be cautious on the financial front as there may be some hidden charges, or someone is not being totally upfront with you. Be certain to read all documents and paperwork before signing them. Rushing ahead in this area of life could cause regrets for some time to come.
If you have something important to say, make sure your meaning is crystal clear. You will find that most problems are because no one has all the facts. There will also be some good news about your partner or a loved one which you will be happy to hear about.
This is not the week to agree to anything important without taking the chance to think it through or to seek advice from others. Any business matters you are involved in could become complicated. Teamwork is the key to success at home or work over the next few months.
Try to let your guard down a bit this week, Aquarius. If you want attention, you’re going to have to allow yourself to be a little bit vulnerable and ask for support. You may notice shifts in your social circle in coming weeks, mainly due to establishing healthy boundaries.
GEMINI 22 MAY – 21 JUNE
VIRGO 24 AUG – 23 SEPT
SAGITTARIUS 23 NOV – 21 DEC
PISCES 20 FEB – 20 MAR
With Jupiter restoring balance, you’re aware you don’t have all the answers, but life is unfolding just as it should. At work you may find yourself a part of a new group of friends or colleagues. If you have been exhausted, your vitality will be restored.
At work, circumstances out of your control may prevent you from progressing as fast as you’d like. If you use your charm, you’re likely to learn something to your advantage. Virgos in a relationship may take up a sporting hobby or some kind of shared interest with your partner.
If there have been issues in your work or family life lately, it’s time to take some positive steps in sorting the situation out. A family member may be moving home, and you will be keen to help them get things organised. Things are looking up from 22 June.
With Jupiter in Pisces, there should be some fun social events to look forward to. But if you are too straightforward, it may adversely affect those around you, including your nearest and dearest. You would be wise to control your way of speaking if you wish to avoid unnecessary arguments.
