This week... Lucky me recently enjoyed five days defrosting and visiting family in tropical Cairns. Last Saturday morning, I was the only person swimming in the croc-free, fresh waters at the Babinda Boulders – certainly invigorating but a touch too cold for the locals! Those from outside the Capital Region often think of Canberrans as soft – but in reality we’re a hardy bunch. Take the merry throngs of nude winter solstice swimmers who braved the icy waters of Lake Burley Griffin early Monday morning to raise money for Lifeline, while washing away negativity for a fresh start. Fresh, indeed! And the previous Thursday, around 160 dedicated locals slept outside on a long Canberra winter’s night to raise money for the Vinnies CEO Sleepout. Having raised over $971,000 by next morning, Vinnies is aiming to reach the $1 million mark locally as participants continue to fundraise through to 31 July (donations can be made online via ceosleepout.org.au). Go you good things! Reasons to be grateful this past week include a delightful trip to Cairns to visit my parents and relatives, swimming near Babinda, rainforest walks, a convenient three-hour direct flight from CNS to CBR, and the hundreds of hardy Canberrans who put their bodies on the line to raise funds for local worthy causes and people in need.

It’s hoped this year’s Truffle Festival will draw domestic tourists to the Canberra Region, lured in by the “mystique” of the black truffle and the district’s food and wine scene. Photo: Martin Ollman.

‘Winter delights’ at this year’s truffle festival As Canberra continues its postCOVID recovery, the ACT’s major tourist events are starting to come back in all the ways we know and love. Floriade this year will be back at Commonwealth Park and our beloved celebration of winter, otherwise known as the Canberra

Region Truffle Festival, is set for full steam ahead with events galore across winter. Dick Groot Obbink of the Canberra Region Truffle Festival Association and Durran Durra Truffles in Braidwood, NSW said this season is shaping up to be a good one.

“This is different from last year where all sorts of events affected our truffle production,” he said. “This year, we’re seeing truffles coming out of the ground quite early, and I hope that the season as such is going to be a very bountiful one for us.” The 2021 events program is packed with the usual favourites, from hunts with the revered truffle dogs to brunches, lunches and dinners galore – look out for truffles on the menus of local restaurants! And in more good news for lovers of local food and wine, the Canberra Wine District Fireside Festival will run from 17 July to 15 August in conjunction with the Truffle Festival with events celebrating local drops and produce – truffles included. The Truffle Festival’s economic impact in the region is significant, and at a time where domestic travel is the only holiday option afforded to Australians (aside from New Zealand), the ACT Government is banking on domestic tourists to bolster the economy.

Chief Minister Andrew Barr said while bushfires and the pandemic hit the agriculture production and tourism sectors hard, the ACT region has a strong food and wine reputation with seasonal offerings like the Truffle Festival. “And it’s why, pre-pandemic, we were experiencing all-time record levels of domestic and international tourism.” Mr Groot Obbink said people are drawn to the “mystique” of truffles, which act as a “winter magnet” for tourists. “In the positive for us with the epidemic of COVID is the many people who would otherwise be overseas at this time of the year are now discovering the winter delights of our area.” - Libby Kimber The Truffle Festival will run through to the end of August. Government commissions full audit into ChooseCBR ACT Minister for Business Tara Cheyne has announced the ACT Government will conduct a full independent audit and review of ChooseCBR following calls from the opposition to do so. The evaluation will comprise an independent and comprehensive review of the program design and implementation, the findings of which will be made publicly available. Through the audit process, the spread of activity across businesses and consumers will be analysed. Over $1.6 million worth of vouchers were claimed in just one day when the scheme resumed on Friday 18 June; the full $2 million had been redeemed by 8am Saturday 19 June. More than 77,000 customers registered for the scheme. A total of 797 businesses redeemed just under 59,000 vouchers from more than 8

canberraweekly.com.au

30,000 registered customer accounts; 178 of those businesses redeemed fewer than 10 vouchers, 530 redeemed fewer than 50. Nineteen businesses redeemed more than 500 vouchers, while the individual business that redeemed the most vouchers was in Gungahlin and received 3.3% of all vouchers. Of the $2 million worth of discount vouchers made available, 37% went to supermarkets and other food retailing businesses. Businesses in the food services industry received 26% of the vouchers, and despite reports of queues running out the door at chain chemist retailers while the scheme was still active, the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and toiletry goods retailing sector cashed only 6.2% of all vouchers. Some criticism was levelled at the fact McDonalds and Chemist Warehouse outlets, amongst other

national franchises, were allowed to register for this iteration of the scheme after the eligibility criteria was changed to remove the JobKeeper stipulation. “Franchisees are small businesses, owned by locals who employ locals,” Ms Cheyne said. “It is not up to any person to make an assumption about whether a business was ‘genuinely struggling’. “Importantly, what the data shows is that no one business was dominating the voucher redemptions … many businesses were busy.” Overall, the scheme resulted in more than $5.1 million being spent in ACT businesses during the full roll-out. The ChooseCBR website went offline for one week to fix technical issues that plagued the scheme after it was first launched on 9 June, with many businesses and consumers unable to redeem vouchers.

In calling for the independent ChooseCBR audit, Shadow Minister for Business Leanne Castley said there were “serious questions about the scheme’s integrity”. “On June 3, the Business Minister said the government had made the revamped ChooseCBR ‘as simple as possible’ yet it was riddled with problems,” Ms Castley said. “Just 24 hours after the scheme was resurrected last Friday, the funds dried up, with reports that vouchers were redeemed late into the night.” Ms Cheyne said some businesses were manually redeeming vouchers during the night. “While this is anecdotal evidence, it does point to some of the legitimate business practices that were occurring which did see vouchers claimed at what would otherwise seem to be unusual hours,” she said. - Denholm Samaras

political capital Beware the politics of statue-erection Labor and Greens women MLAs are promoting a petition to erect a statue of a prominent woman in Canberra by 2023. “Too often new statues in this city … have celebrated yet another old white man”, says Greens MLA Jo Clay. They argue that such a statue would be a source of inspiration for women and girls, someone they could model themselves on. If their argument is that women are underrepresented in the category of achievement traditionally represented by statues, they are mistaken. Men predominate in this category because they have achieved more; there have been relatively few women explorers, prime ministers, chief justices and Nobel laureates. That observation reflects no discredit to women, but rather to the social and economic barriers they have historically faced in reaching positions of leadership. If the argument is that an act of positive discrimination is needed to inspire women, the MLAs may have a point. But there is a significant downside to this approach. When you visit the town squares and cathedrals of European cities, you see many

monuments to historical figures. But what the educated visitor soon realises is that most of these figures are ones they have never heard of. They conclude that the monuments are reflections of a personage’s past power or wealth, not their contribution to humanity. In Vienna, for example, there are magnificent monuments over the tombs of Austrian emperors, but no equivalent for Mozart, who was buried in an unmarked grave. In Australia, we like to think that more enlightened principles are at work today in the erection of monuments at public expense. A statue today is earned, surely, not the result of wealth or sycophancy. But a statue erected primarily because of a person’s gender compromises that principle. Like the traveller in Europe, people will grow cynical: this woman is commemorated in bronze because she was best female chief justice, not the best chief justice. Most up-and-coming women I speak to would be horrified if they were perceived to have won a position based on gender preferencing, rather than

WITH GARY HUMPHRIES AO, FORMER ACT CHIEF MINISTER AND ACT SENATOR

their own worth. Is the position really any different when it comes to memorialising their achievements? Positive discrimination can backfire sometimes. For several years, the ABC classical music station has been heavily promoting female composers, claiming that the preference for old white composers undervalues the contribution to music by women. Thus, on any given day, one will hear multiple works by women, whose names are largely unfamiliar, even to classical music buffs. Recently the station sponsored the Classic 100, a poll of its listeners as to the 100 best pieces of classical music. Although over 127,000 listeners voted, one – just one – work by a female composer made it to the list. The listener re-education program has apparently fallen on deaf ears. Australia, unlike old Europe, is a society based largely on merit. For that reason, any departures from that principle – however small, however well-intentioned – should be viewed with the deepest suspicion.

to the editor Green bins totally inadequate Re: “Common sense dumped in West Belconnen” (CW 17 June 2021, p8). As a resident of West Belconnen, I agree wholeheartedly with Gary Humphries regarding the green waste facility closure. The green waste bins are totally inadequate. We fill ours twice with just the grass clippings, never mind the plant cuttings or the leaves from the Plane Trees that are on our nature strip courtesy of the local planning authority. So far this winter, we have taken three large trailer loads of

Is the ABC a “leftie” organisation?

People often ask why anyone with an ABC connection is often described as a “leftie”? Many people believe the ABC (Awfully Biased Organisation) is perceived to be a left-leaning organisation, who believe their primary role is to bring down Coalition Governments. Statistics show that it also appears to indulge in nepotism to shore up its “leftie” base, and resorts to political appointments within the organisation to suit its own agenda. It pays scant regard to its Charter and Broadcasting Act, as it indulges in journalist sensationalism, it also either ignores the facts, or even worse, distorts them when it suits them politically, and that is most certainly not acceptable, particularly as it is fully funded by the taxpayer to the tune of one billion per year. It is risible that programs such as Q & A with Leigh Sales as presenter, and its blatantly biased hand-picked audience and panel, are allowed to continue to be shown. Under these circumstances, it’s about time that we set up a Royal Commission to investigate how it is run, as the ABC, once well respected as our “national broadcaster”, has now become our “national disaster”.

news ACT to open second Pfizer vaccination centre The ACT’s second major Pfizer vaccination hub opens at the Canberra Airport on Tuesday 29 June. Now that people under 60 can no longer receive the Astra-Zeneca vaccine, the Federal Government will supply more doses of Pfizer – but the amount is beyond the capacity of the Garran surge centre alone to deliver, said ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr. Hence the need for a new facility. The Commonwealth Government will supply 3,000 Pfizer doses per week, which will give the ACT an ongoing supply of more than 10,000 Pfizer doses per week during July, and the capacity to book an extra 1,500 appointments, Mr Barr said. The airport vaccination hub operates seven days a week, from 8am to 3.30pm. It is set up and staffed by Canberra Health Services. The Commonwealth Government is paying for the vaccines, and the ACT and Federal governments are sharing the costs of infrastructure. “It’s really pleasing that the Commonwealth has given us that extra supply and we’re able to open this new clinic,” said ACT Health Minister, Rachel Stephen-Smith. “More eligible

Canberrans will have access to COVID-19 vaccines through this new vaccination clinic.” As a jurisdiction, the ACT was doing “incredibly well” at vaccinations, Ms Stephen-Smith said. More than 24,000 people have had both doses of the vaccine as of Monday 21 June, and more than 72,000 vaccine doses have been delivered through clinics. She said she was pleased to see such strong demand and little hesitancy. The ACT Government will expand the program as it gets more supplies, Mr Barr said. He predicted vaccinations would build momentum from July to September, and peak in the last three months of the year, as the supply chain built up and multiple vaccines became available. “The Commonwealth’s stated goal … is that everyone who wants their first dose should have access to one in 2021,” Mr Barr said. Pfizer is the preferred dose for people under 60. Last week, the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) raised the minimum age for the Astra-Zeneca vaccine from 50 to 60 due to the risk of rare but

serious blood clotting. The ACT Government has contacted all 2,700 residents aged in their fifties booked to receive this vaccine. The Mass Vaccination Clinic at Calvary Public Hospital Bruce will administer the Astra-Zeneca vaccine for people over 60. Ms Stephen-Smith said last week’s announcement had freed up appointments and suggested now was the time to book for this vaccine. Mr Barr encouraged Canberrans to book an appointment. “The quicker we can get our population vaccinated, the safer we’ll be as a community, and the closer we will be to removing the range of COVID restrictions that are placed upon us as Canberrans and as Australians,” he said. People can book their appointment online, using the ACT Government booking system MyDHR, or by phoning the ACT Government COVID-19 Vaccination line on 5124 7700, 7am to 7pm daily. People can request a call back and will not lose their place in the queue. - Nick Fuller

news Liberals give ACT Government a failing school report The Canberra Liberals are calling for an independent systemic review of the ACT education system, which they say is failing ACT students. The government disagrees that any such review is needed. The Liberals’ report, Bringing out the best in every child: An Education strategy for the ACT, prepared by educationalist Dr Karen Macpherson, was published last week (17 June). The ACT should be the best performing school system in Australia, said Jeremy Hanson, Shadow Minister for Education, but there were significant problems in terms of academic results (low literacy and numeracy); school facilities (overcrowding and ageing infrastructure); bullying; and governance and equity. According to some studies, ACT students were up to 16 months behind other jurisdictions. The ACT education system was stagnating and due for reform, the

Liberals’ report argues, despite the highest teacher salaries, the smallest class sizes, and the second highest education funding per student in Australia. The Liberals claim that under the Future of Education Strategy, adopted in 2018, ACT schools rely too much on student-directed learning, where children determine how and what they want to learn. The Canberra Liberals believe these trends can be reversed by more focus on the basics of literacy and numeracy. They point to the UK, which recently overhauled its educational system to focus on the three R’s. A decade ago, Britain was 16 places behind Australia; now, it is well ahead. Mr Hanson believed the ACT needed a comprehensive review, similar to that conducted by David Gonski in 2018, to understand why

the ACT was falling behind on literacy and numeracy. Yvette Berry, Minister for Education and Youth Affairs, denied that there was any problem, and disagreed that an independent review would be useful; one had been conducted in 2018. “I would think the last thing our schools want to be going through is yet another review.” Mr Hanson, however, argued that the education system must be looked at as a system, not school by school. “At the moment, there are external reviews of individual schools, but that’s not painting the broad picture that we need to see.” Ms Berry also disagreed that ACT children were between two months and a year behind children in other parts of Australia, or that

there were any problems with the rollout of inquiry-based learning in the ACT. The report also claims that bullying and violence are rife in schools and classrooms; school infrastructure is ageing and under-funded (in “a dangerous state of disrepair”), and other classes are overcrowded. The ACT Government is conducting an investigation into school infrastructure. Ms Berry said the government has committed more than $114 million to upgrade public schools over the next four years, on top of funding for regular repairs and maintenance, and follows a $99 million investment over the last four years. - Nick Fuller Find an extended version of this story and more online at canberraweekly.com.au

Indian Myna declared a pest

The ACT Greens might want to raise the minimum age of criminal responsibility for minors – but mynas are a different kettle of fish. Or bird, rather. The feathered fiend is one of the most invasive species in the world, and its presence endangers native birds and animals. This week, Environment Minister Rebecca Vassarotti declared that the Indian or common myna (pictured) was a prohibited pest animal under the Pest Plants and Animals Act 2005 – an Australian first. “While many people find 18

canberraweekly.com.au

Indian mynas are a nuisance, they have significant environmental impacts and to the community that we are really concerned about,” Ms Vassarotti said. As Indian mynas are an introduced pest species, the public can trap and dispose of them – either by gassing them themselves, or handing them over to the Canberra Indian Myna Action Group (CIMAG). Mynas cannot be bred or kept in captivity, except for eradication. Nor can they be sold or released into the wild. Bill Handke, president of CIMAG, welcomed this “first step in a more concerted and concentrated effort to control this pest”. “This really is a profound decision because it will give a fillip and a boost to the control of this pest species, not just in the ACT region but hopefully up and down the eastern seaboard of Australia.” - Nick Fuller

the project, with Professor Nixon planning to have the arena built in the next “three or four years”. “The timeframe is dependent on funding propositions,” he said. “We’ve got to try to work out how we can co-fund this to deliver it for the ACT.” UC’s Director of Sport, Carrie Graf said providing a suitable highperformance facility for the Capitals is “very exciting” and long overdue. “Right now, we’re standing in the Capitals’ high performance facility; a 40-year-old, barely high school standard gym,” Ms Graf said. “It will provide Canberra and the region with a facility that currently doesn’t exist. “The AIS Arena is no longer open for business, the National Convention Centre isn’t suitable for many sports, so for it to be based here at the University would be monumental.” In the interim, Ms Graf said finding a suitable venue for the Capitals will be a “challenge for the organisation”, with the team having to massage their fixtures around playing matches at the National Convention Centre. - Denholm Samaras

Mobile phone detection cameras on the way Canberra’s roads will be safer for all users now that a bill to roll out mobile phone detection cameras by early next year passed the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday 22 June. ACT Minister for Transport and City Services, Chris Steel said the new cameras would reduce driver distraction, a major cause of accidents. “Research shows that taking your eyes off the road for more than two seconds doubles the risk of a crash; mobile phones are too often the source of that distraction,” Mr Steel said. “A driver who looks at their phone for just two seconds while driving at 60 kilometres an hour travels 33 metres blind.” Last year, ACT Policing issued more than 1,000 infringements

for using a mobile device while driving. Mr Steel thought the actual rate of offending was likely to be much higher. The ACT Government also launched a new communications campaign to raise community awareness of these risks. The campaign will also ensure people understand the rules on using mobile devices while driving. “We are calling on drivers to follow a series of simple steps to build better habits and stay focussed when driving,” Mr Steel said. These include removing your devices from view entirely, setting yourself up before you get on the road, and turning on the ‘do not disturb’ function to remove notifications.

sport Not enough facilities, say ACT sports associations Basketball and badminton are some of the fastest-growing sports in the ACT, but local associations say there is not enough room to expand. There is a “complete lack of available and suitable indoor sports halls”, says Olaf Schuermann, president of the ACT Badminton Association (ACTBA). ACTBA’s 15 affiliated clubs can no longer accept new members or casuals, he said. Since badminton is the number one or two sport in many Asian countries, Mr Schuermann predicts most ACTBA clubs will be full by the first week that sessions resume early next year. Basketball is also feeling the pinch. Basketball ACT (BACT) has 100 new junior teams and 25 senior teams this year – bringing the total to 590-odd juniors and more than 180 seniors – all competing for space. BACT has a four-court indoor

facility in Belconnen, hires the ageing Tuggeranong Southern Cross Basketball Stadium (whose roof leaks in wet weather), and uses local schools. Pressed for space, one club’s four under-10 teams train on a single court. Some clubs pay long-term leases, which makes the sport more expensive for members. “There’s a massive indoor facility shortage around Canberra,” said Nicole Bowles, acting CEO of BACT. “We can’t grow the sport any more because we’ve got nowhere to go.” Both basketball and badminton groups believe the ACT Government can help. BACT is seeking funding from the government to build two indoor courts near the Belconnen stadium, which would meet current demand – but needs another three or four indoor courts to grow. ACTBA want the government

to turn a Fyshwick or Mitchell warehouse into a dedicated badminton facility, but have made no headway. The government, Mr Schuermann believes, has no plans to address this situation. Meanwhile, the government encourages sports clubs to use public schools for training and games, but clubs say facilities are inadequate. Government improvements to public schools have provided another 65 to 70 hours per week of community access for basketball, futsal, and roller derby, a spokesperson said. The Margaret Hendry School, Taylor, has a new indoor sports court, while the new Kenny school will have two full-size indoor courts. The Weston Creek Woden Dodgers (a basketball team) are priority hirers at Stirling’s Headley

At a glance Brumbies win Super W opener The Brumbies got their Super W campaign underway with a big 30-5 victory over the Melbourne Rebels in Queanbeyan on Saturday 19 June. It was a tight first half with the Brumbies scoring the first try in the 30th minute to set up a lead at the break. Two quick Brumbies tries after half time opened the game right up before the Rebels hit back with their only try of the afternoon. Winger Halley Derera put the finishing touches on the win for the Brumbies with a try in the corner right on full time.

Raiders suffer another collapse The Canberra Raiders’ secondhalf struggles continued with a 22-20 loss to the Dragons at a blustery WIN Stadium on Saturday evening, 19 June. Playing with a strong breeze at their backs, the Raiders made a 22

Beare Centre and at Alfred Deakin High School. The government also plans to install adjustable height basketball hoops at Belconnen High and Melrose High. But sports associations say facilities are inadequate (e.g. Margaret Hendy’s ceiling is too low), and that they are competing for space on school courts with other sports and clubs during peak times. In April, Greens MLA Johnathan Davis moved that the government should set up a sport and recreation industry peak body; develop a new long-term strategic plan for sport and recreation in the ACT; and design a comprehensive facilities management plan for indoor and outdoor sporting facilities. The ACT Government will report back to the Legislative Assembly at the end of the year. - Nick Fuller

fast start, scoring the opening two tries to set up a 14-6 lead at half time. A Joe Tapine try early in the second half opened up a 12-point lead for the Raiders but it wasn’t enough as the Dragons made the most of the wind to score the final three tries of the game. The Raiders next match is against the Gold Coast Titans at GIO Stadium on Saturday 3 July.

Brave beat Northstars twice The CBR Brave completed a twogame sweep over the Newcastle Northstars last weekend with a 2-1 overtime win on Saturday 19 June followed by a 4-2 victory on Sunday. Canberra product Kai Miettinen scored the overtime winner on Saturday with a perfect mid-range shot, while two last period goals to Tyler Kubara and Matt Harvey sealed the second win. The Brave now sit atop the ladder with 6 wins in 7 games, with an away trip against the Sydney Ice Dogs on Saturday 26 June their next match up.

Kingsborough Village: a community by design Phillip says the developer of Kingsborough Village was instrumental in both decisions; to move in and to set up shop. “From the moment I met John [Gasson], I just had faith.” Similarly, but in the reverse, Axis Roasters’ Nick Jennings made the move to Kingsborough after having worked in the precinct. “The developer was very engaged and helpful in helping us find our dream for the roaster. And then it just sort of progressed, and it turned into a place where everyone wanted to work together,” he says. “The community that grew out of it, I don’t think anyone was quite expecting. But we’re all really tight, we look after each other. “[People] want to be part of the community as well, rather than just come here and make money.” Now, Nick fosters the Kingsborough Village community spirit by activating the central shared space with food trucks on the weekends and drinks from The Warehouse – home of Axis Roasters and part-coffee shop part-taphouse. “The response has been really, really great.” Nestled in Kingsborough Village are the residents and businesses that are making this thriving community happen. Flip through this special Kingsborough Village feature to hear from: Ascentem, Axis Roasters, Capital Lend, Kingston Foreshore Cycles, The Foreshore Vet, and Waku the Workspace.

Step into Kingston Foreshore’s Kingsborough Village and you’d be forgiven for thinking you’d been transported out of the Capital. The development has been designed for community connection; the aim was to create an inner-city complex with a village feel – and what a success that has been. The vision of local developer John Gasson, Kingsborough Village saw five different architecture firms come together to design one building each in response to Gasson’s brief: a community precinct that explored the site’s industrial heritage. What’s resulted is a thriving community in a complex that looks and feels like something Canberra has never seen before. The precinct was built with shared spaces in mind to encourage community connection and “day-to-day interactions between like-minded neighbours”. Resident and business owner Phillip Hopkins, of Kingston Foreshore Cycles, moved to Kingsborough Village from 50 acres of land for the inner-city lifestyle and foreshore location. He then set up Kingston Foreshore Cycles after moving into the village – how’s that for a short commute? “The shop and the community fit like a glove,” he says. “Because you’ve got an inner-city village community, where people really don’t want to drive their cars, they’re all cycling.”

Torta al cioccolato Serves 6–8

Chocolate heaven

We love chocolate here at CW, so this week our food writer Libby Kimber shares some Italian desserts that are full of the good stuff.

Torta di semolino e cioccolato Serves 8 Sweet shortcrust pastry dough Semolina filling 500ml (2 cups) milk Pinch of salt 85g (2/3 cup) fine semolina 75g (1/3 cup) sugar Finely grated zest of 1 lemon 1 egg, beaten Chocolate ganache 75ml thick (double) cream 150g dark chocolate (70% cocoa), finely chopped Preheat the oven to 180°C. After resting the pastry dough, roll it out to a thickness of about 3–4mm and press into a 23cm pie dish, trimming the edges. Place a sheet of baking paper over the pastry and fill with baking beads (you can also use dried beans or uncooked rice that you can keep and re-use specifically for this purpose). Blind bake for 15 minutes. 34

canberraweekly.com.au

Take the pastry out of the oven and remove the baking paper with the beads. Let the pastry cool. Prepare the semolina by bringing the milk to the boil with the salt. Turn the heat to low–medium, add the semolina and whisk continuously until the mixture thickens to a thick porridge consistency. This should take 8-10 minutes. Taste to check if it’s ready – the semolina should feel soft in your mouth, not grainy. When ready, remove from the heat and stir in the sugar and zest until combined. When the mixture has cooled, stir in the egg. Spread the semolina mixture into the tart crust. Bake at 180°C for 40–45 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and the semolina feels firm and springy to the touch. Let it cool completely. Prepare the ganache by bringing the cream to the boil in a small saucepan. Take off the heat, add the chocolate to the cream and stir or whisk until very smooth. Pour the warm ganache over the cooled semolina tart and let it cool completely to set before slicing and serving. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

100g Dutch (unsweetened) cocoa powder, sifted, plus extra for dusting 200g (1 1/3 cups) plain flour, sifted 200g sugar 2 tsp baking powder Pinch of salt 1 tsp natural vanilla extract, or 1 vanilla bean, split lengthways and seeds scraped 350ml full-cream milk, or as needed Preheat the oven to 180°C. Grease a 20cm round cake tin and dust with sifted cocoa powder. Tap upside down to remove any excess. Place the dry ingredients together in a bowl (do make sure the cocoa powder is sifted well to ensure you don’t have problems with lumps later). Add the vanilla to the milk, then add this, bit by bit, to the dry ingredients, stirring with a wooden spoon until combined and smooth. If the batter is too stiff, you can add more milk (or even water). Pour into the tin and gently smooth the top. Bake for roughly 30 minutes, or until the centre of the cake feels springy to the touch and it smells cooked – it will be distinctly chocolatey. When it has cooled enough to handle, remove from the tin and serve as desired – dusted with icing sugar or, when completely cooled, covered in ganache, perhaps with some berries on top or whipped cream on the side.

add dinosaurs, ninjas, and a giant pair of dirty underpants, just to name a few. “It seemed like a really funny thing to do to take one of the most serious and respected plays in the western theatre tradition and hand it over to two clowns,” Matt said.

cover story Created by, written by, and starring The Listies, Matt Kelly (left) and Richard Higgins, Hamlet: Prince of Skidmark is one of many family comedy shows they’ve made over the past decade. Photo supplied.

Hamlet: Prince of Skidmark a crack up for the whole family The Lion King did it, Star Wars did it, and even the Chris Farley vehicle Tommy Boy did it. Now, one of the most ambitious retellings of a Shakespearean classic, Hamlet: Prince of Skidmark, is coming to The Q in Queanbeyan early next month. Created by, written by, and starring Melbourne children’s comedy duo Richard Higgins and Matt Kelly, aka The Listies, the pair have been making comedy shows for families for over a decade. In creating Prince of Skidmark, the duo enlisted the help of playwright Declan Green, and for the production they’ve brought in actor Monica Kumar, who plays stage manager ‘Fran’. “It’s like two idiots and their stage manager attempt one of the most complicated and highest works of western canon in an hour,” Richard said.

Matt described the work as “comedy first and Shakespeare second”. “It’s a show about people trying to do a show, two clowns trying to take on something enormous, failing at it but having a really good time,” he said. In creating Hamlet: Prince of Skidmark, the team have set out to produce an interactive, bright and colourful production complete with a set, costumes and props that fit the bill. “The show starts as Shakespeare and becomes this neon-coloured show set a billion years in the future with a dinosaur costume,” Richard said. Matt explained that as they started working on the play with playwright Declan Green, they did so with the guiding principle of “what would a kid do if they were writing this show”, which saw them

“What we wanted to do with the show was to show kids that it’s fun to make up your own stories as well.” Richard said their physical, vaudeville style brings a silliness that the entire audience laughs at, rather than relying on double entendre jokes for adults. “Our aim is to make everyone in the audience laugh, everyone pays for a ticket and should enjoy the show,” he said. “One of the values we have is kids should get to consume the same art as adults and it should be treated as seriously and with the same effort as well,” Matt said. “They are cultural citizens.” Over the course of the show, the cast will call on the audience for help, letting the kids in and allowing them to contribute. “By the end, in the finale, we work toward a thing where the whole audience feel they’re in the show,” Richard said. The duo sees it as their mission to engage a younger audience in theatre; they praised The Q for adopting a similar vision with their programming. “I think it’s very rare that you grow up to be an adult and go ‘I like going to theatre’, I think it’s something you go to as a kid and grow up with,” Matt said. “That’s why we’re motivated to do what we do. “Families have had a very tough covid and it feels really nourishing for everyone to come and share a laugh together.” Having previously lived in Canberra for four years working at Questacon, Matt was in a band with The Q’s artistic director, Jordan Best. “We booked it then I ran into Jordan, and she said you are coming to my theatre,” he said. National Opera brings Mozart, music and magic to Canberra The sun’s rays chase night away – and the talent of National Opera’s singers will shine forth once more in their third production, Mozart’s Magic Flute, at the Albert Hall on Saturday 27 June. “The Magic Flute is a perfect opera to see for the first time,” says the company’s artistic director, Peter Coleman-Wright. “It has fantasy, magic, intrigue, goodies and baddies, humour and tragedy, and loveable characters.” And in the abridged Pocket Opera format, it’s only an hour and a quarter long. “People can come and enjoy the show, get the most wonderful tunes and music that they will recognise, have a glass of wine, and then go home and be in bed by 7.30.” The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte in German) is Mozart’s most beloved opera, and (depending on the year) the second or third most performed opera in the world. It is a kind of mystical pantomime: a profound work in which the forces of light (or Freemasonry) banish darkness and superstition, and a fairy tale full of wicked enchantresses, good wizards, simple bird-catchers, serpents, and dancing animals. The Flute was originally performed at one of Vienna’s popular theatres, with a libretto written by the impresario Schikaneder, who was both a noted Hamlet and a clown. Goethe wrote a sequel to the work (a precursor to Faust), while George Bernard Shaw thought two arias in it were the only music he knew that would not sound out of place in the

mouth of God. It has been filmed by Ingmar Bergman (1975) and Kenneth Branagh (2006). The Magic Flute is National Opera’s third Mozart of the year; the company débuted in April with La Clemenza di Tito, and staged a shortened version of The Marriage of Figaro last month. The Pocket Opera approach, Coleman-Wright explains, “keeps the thread, the momentum of the story moving, without stopping it with long arias”. Reducing an almost threehour opera by an hour and a half necessitates some cuts, of course. The Queen of the Night, for instance, only has one of her numbers, the famously demanding rage aria Der Hölle Rache; the heroine Pamina loses her slow aria Ach, ich fühl’s; and the bird-catcher Papageno loses a verse from his chirpy song. Nor does the cast have a booming bass to sing the mage Sarastro; he is an offstage force of good. “We touch on everything, but I don’t want it to dip … so it’s a real bullet of a story.” The Pocket Operas also serve as a training ground for young Canberra singers; Mozart’s operas, ColemanWright explains, have a big cast, where everyone gets a go. “I want people to learn roles; to really understand what it takes to get inside the character, to learn how to act and to sing in another language.” - Nick Fuller The Magic Flute, Albert Hall, Saturday 27 June, 2pm and 6pm. The DESIGN Canberra 2021 photography competition is celebrating 1970s Canberra design and architecture like the ANU’s School of Music. File photo.

That’s arts & entertainment Photography competition celebrates ‘Design in the 70s’ DESIGN Canberra’s annual photography competition has announced its theme for 2021, encouraging photographers to take a closer look at 1970s Canberra design and architecture. The theme of ‘Design in the 70s’ invites individuals to submit digital photographs that celebrate the

visionary and experimental design that emerged from the nation’s capital in the 1970s. Think architecture by Taglietti, Seidler, Boyd, Andrews and Pegrum; co-living medium density experiments; public art by Bert Flugelman and Margel Hinder; or the refinement of the Y plan in Canberra’s town planning. “We are seeing a renewed interest in Canberra’s iconic design from

the 1970s, with site-sensitive form, scale and materials, limited palettes, an embrace of social innovation and celebration of the hand-made,” said Craft ACT CEO Rachael Coghlan. “In architecture, the School of Music and Cameron Offices opened, co-housing experiments like Urambi Village and Wybalena Grove were brought to reality.” The top 100 photos will be printed and exhibited in a signature DESIGN Canberra exhibition at Canberra Contemporary Art Space from 8 to 28 November. Last year’s photo competition attracted a record number of entries, over 800. Entries need to be submitted on Instagram, between 16 June and 30 September. For entries to be considered, participants will need to follow and tag @designcanberrafestival and hashtag their photographs with #designcanberra #dcphotocomp2021 #visitcanberra and #student if you are a college or high school student.

Aarwun Gallery packs 300 works in for Salon ‘21 Gold Creek’s Aarwun Gallery has been inundated with close to 300 works sent in by 140 artists from across Australia for their Salon ‘21 exhibition. Opening Saturday 26 June, Aarwun Gallery owner Robert Pengilley said the “overwhelming response” came after he issued a callout over email a few months ago. “It’s such an amazing response with really good art,” he said. “We’ve had work from Perth to Brisbane, from remote indigenous communities to you name it, we’ve got everything here.” The works will be hung in the French wall-to-ceiling style, truly filling the gallery space. “I like clutter and I’m not into minimalism, one exhibition where we could cram the gallery full,” Pengilley said. “We’re in the middle of a mess trying to hang it all.” Salon ‘21 will be displayed at Aarwun Gallery, Gold Creek, 26 June to 18 July; aarwungallery.com

Now showing Fast & Furious 9 (M)

In 1989, Dominic and Jakob Toretto witness their father crash on a racetrack. Flashing forward, and Dom (Vin Diesel) gets pulled out of retirement to assist his old team with a mission; Mr Nobody’s (Kurt Russel) plane holding the captured Cipher (Charlize Theron), and a device that can hack into any computer weapons system has been downed by rogue agents in Central America. The Fast and the Furious franchise kicked off back in 2001, initially as a Point Break knock-off celebrating the underground street-racing culture of Los Angeles. The series has since evolved into a whacky, hyper-realistic spy action adventure. Physics and biology no longer hold a place with cars doing the impossible and their drivers continually surviving all manner of carnage with nary a scratch. With the stakes continually

rising, it becomes more and more difficult to engage with the on-screen shenanigans. The franchise’s heart centres on the theme of family. With the highly publicised excising of Dwayne Johnson from the franchise, ex-wrestler John Cena tries to fill the void as Dom’s long-lost brother. The brothers’ early days are effective, but one can feel the writers working overtime to shoehorn the antagonist into the movie, and further into Dom’s conflicted heart. Verdict: A plot-heavy, lazy, bythe-numbers entry which sorely lacks the charm of Johnson and Jason Statham. Here’s hoping the planned final two entries jack up the charisma while conversely grounding proceedings. 2.5 stars. Viewed at Palace Electric Cinemas. - Luke McWilliams themoveclub.net

James Phelps is a well-known Sydney journalist and true crime author. After years of writing factual accounts about Australia’s toughest prisons, Phelps has now used that knowledge to pen an exciting action thriller. The Inside Man focuses on Riley Jax, a former army engineer who is in prison for murder. Jax cannot remember the night of the killing and is struggling to survive in Long Bay jail. Meanwhile a series of bombings rock the outside world, and it appears that Jax may be the only person who can unravel the truth behind them. An enjoyable, easy flowing tale that.

The Killing Kind by Jane Casey Harper Collins, $24.99

London barrister Ingrid Lewis thought that she had finally escaped the attentions of former client and serial stalker John Webster, but when a colleague is run down on a busy road, Ingrid suspects that she was the intended victim. The police are not convinced, and when Webster turns up at Ingrid’s door claiming that she is in danger, she does not know which way to turn. Jane Casey does a good job of steadily ramping up the tension in this engaging crime thriller and The Killing Kind builds to taut, surprising conclusion. A smart, compelling novel.

True Crime Story by Joseph Knox Doubleday, $32.99

Fans of crime documentaries will enjoy this clever mashup of true crime and detective fiction. Written in the style of a chilling true crime documentary, in which the author himself features, True Crime Story follows the eight-year investigation into the disappearance of 19-year-old Manchester University student Zoe Nolan, who went missing in 2011 after a party. As a pair of writers try to understand what happened that night, old secrets and new threats are revealed. Drawing on fictional police reports, interviews, letters and other sources, True Crime Story is a highly original murder mystery presented as a true crime account.

The Vein Insitute advertising moment

“Varicose veins are more than just a cosmetic issue,” says Dr Zil Yassine (pictured). Vein conditions can potentially lead to more severe complications if left untreated.

The colder months are an ideal time to have your varicose veins assessed and treated by the dedicated team of experts at The Vein Institute.

Step into spring with the legs of your dreams Are you ready to say goodbye to varicose veins? At The Vein Insitute, Dr Zil Yassine and his expert and dedicated team treat varicose veins without surgery – which means no invasive procedures and no hospital stay! The colder months are the ideal time to explore treatment options for varicose veins so you can step into spring with the legs of your dreams. Dr Yassine says varicose veins affect around 30% of the Australian population. While some view varicose veins as ‘just a cosmetic concern’, Dr Yassine says this is not the case for everyone. “Varicose veins can potentially lead to more severe complications if left untreated,” he says. Varicose veins can occur when your vein

valves are not functioning properly. Faulty or weak one-way valves will allow blood to flow backwards and collect in your vein, which will eventually lead to the swollen, twisted looking veins. Dr Yassine says veins are an integral part of the circulation system, taking de-oxygenated blood back to the heart, which is why vein

conditions should always be taken seriously. “Issues with your veins are likely linked to poor blood circulation and could therefore lead to health concerns related to your heart and lungs.” He says the signs and symptoms of varicose veins can include: pain, itching or heaviness in the legs; burning, throbbing or muscle cramping; pain that intensifies after long periods sitting or standing; and chronic swelling in the lower legs or ankles. “It’s important to treat varicose veins in a timely manner to minimise the risk of developing other health issues,” Dr Yassine says. “Each individual is different; however, there are some cases where, over time, circulation may become worse and cause changes in the colour and texture of the legs. “For some patients, if varicose veins are left untreated for too long, they can cause swelling in the legs and pigmentation of the skin. In rare cases, they can even cause ulcers.”

What are the treatment options? Now, for the good news! While the most commonly known treatment for varicose veins involves the surgical ‘stripping’ of the affected veins, which often requires a hospital stay and a lengthy recovery period, The Vein Institute can do it all with a minimally invasive procedure – no hospital required, and you’ll be in and out in under 45 minutes!

The Vein Institute uses the latest technological treatments for varicose veins and their personalised treatment plans have a 98% success rate.

The Vein Institute’s doctors use the latest technology from the USA and Europe to treat the veins using techniques such as sclerotherapy, endovenous laser ablation and medical superglue. • Sclerotherapy works to close damaged veins by injecting them with sclerosing agent, guided into place using ultrasound imagery. Once the damaged veins are closed, the body re-routes blood flow to other functioning veins and the treated veins disappear within a few weeks. • Medical superglue is another minimally invasive procedure that treats varicose veins by gluing them shut using medical adhesives. Similar to sclerotherapy, it seals the vein shut and the blood is re-routed to other healthy veins.

• The Vein Institute also uses state-of-theart laser technology to treat varicose veins through what’s known as endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) and radiofrequency ablation (RFA). The affected vein is located using ultrasound technology, a catheter is inserted through a tiny incision and laser energy is used to heat the vein and seal it shut. Again, the closed vein will eventually disappear, and the blood will make its way back to the heart through other healthy veins. Dr Yassine says the sensation of the laser treatments can be likened to that of a blood test or an injection, with many patients opting to read a book or magazine during the procedure – you can even request to hear your favourite songs!

To decide which treatment is right for you, your doctor at The Vein Insitute will see you for an initial consultation where they will perform an ultrasound and create a personalised treatment plan. Most treatment plans will include a combination of treatments carried out over a few appointments. All patients are provided with a post-care pack, which includes compression stockings that only need to be worn for a few days, compared with weeks or months post-surgery. Once you’ve completed your sessions, your doctor will perform a fi nal ultrasound to ensure the treatments have been effective. All treatments at The Vein Insitute are performed in a private medical clinic, with COVID-19 protocols in place to ensure patient comfort and safety. Medicare rebates apply and Medipay payment plans are available. Contact the team today to book your initial consultation with one of the The Vein Institute’s vein specialists and get ready to say goodbye to varicose veins!

Trend alert: bathrooms with a natural feel WITH HOME EDITOR, ERIN CROSS

After the ordeals of 2020, our homes have become our refuge. From relaxing baths to rejuvenating showers, the trends for this year see bathrooms going from just a room to in-house resorts that connect us to nature. Head of design and innovation at Methven, Andy Grigor, says bathrooms are private spaces for unwinding and it makes sense that “our interior design ideas shift from décor to destination”. “The mindset needs to move to how a room feels as well as its looks,” he says. Here, Andy gives his top two trends that are showering bathrooms in style, including the colours and materials to create your own oasis.

Biophilia Sheltering inside for much of the last year has left homeowners with a desire to connect with nature. Adding plants to the home are a go-to here, with those that tolerate high humidity being best suited to bathrooms. Use peace lilies and ferns for rich green foliage, or orchids that have bright vibrant flowers. “Treated timbers and tiles that have the appearance of stone or are glazed in natural tones will ground the space in nature,” says Andy. “Introducing metallic elements

through taps, shower systems, handrails and cabinetry hardware will add to this effect, while matte blacks can further embody deep rock hues.”

Kyoto concrete basin $740 slabsbydesign.com.au

Light vs Dark Embrace nature using light, bright coastal looks resplendent with jutes and soft sandy tones or incorporate cocooning forests in deep greens and browns that allow flickering candles to set the mood. “In lighter bathroom aesthetics, matte black fi nishes on taps, shower systems and fittings can add a dramatic contrast, without being garish or unnatural. Alternatively, chromes will blend more seamlessly while adding subtle interest,” says Andy. “In darker designs, metallics will reflect task lighting, which can be used to create the illusion of added space in layouts where the shower or taps are across the room from the entrance as they will draw the eye across the room. Meanwhile dark, matte fi nishes will blend into the background. “Whatever your personal aesthetic, creating a bathroom with a focus on nature and how it feels will create a sanctuary for invigoration when you wake and relaxation at the end of the day.”

Luxury rural living Gunning NSW 10 Dalton Road ‘Eulacre’, halfway between Yass and Goulburn, promises a federation-style farmhouse that’s true to its country homestead roots. “It is the quintessential Australian yarn, a young man backs a horse at the races, wins big and uses his winnings to build the finest house in all the district for his beautiful wife,” says George Southwell, Ray White real estate and stock and station agent. “However, this romantic story is not just folklore, but the true history behind ‘Eulacre’, a federation style house on 2.09 hectares in Gunning and named after the horse who raised the fortune to build it.” Southwell says while ‘Eulacre’ has been brought into the modern era with a luxurious and modern renovation, its original features remain, having been meticulously restored to keep the home’s story alive. “It’s ready for the next chapter in its history.” Inside this historic home is a modern kitchen with farmhouse sink, luxurious bathroom with free-standing bath, and an open fireplace in the living room – not

to mention the updated laundry, three large bedrooms and separate study. Outside, you’ll find an irrigated vegetable patch and orchard and landscaped entertaining area, surrounded by established pine and gum trees. The grounds are also home to a double carport, original shedding, horse stables, workshop and blacksmith quarters, an original milking shed converted to a chicken coop, and two two-acre paddocks and a holding yard. “The ideal buyer would be a growing family looking to enjoy the rural lifestyle, whilst being within easy commuting distance to Canberra and Goulburn,” says Southwell. “‘Eulacre’ is close to town without the hassle of a farm.”

New safety campaign First home buyers saving longer: Domain to target residential construction industry Master Builders ACT, WorkSafe ACT, Capital Airport Group, the Suburban Land Agency and Ginninderry have joined forces for a new safety campaign focusing on the residential construction industry. Master Builders ACT CEO Michael Hopkins said after two deaths on ACT worksites in 2020, the campaign would call on the sector to: identify and report safety hazards; wear personal protective equipment; follow Safe Work Method Statements; seek advice if you are unsure about carrying out any tasks; don’t take

shortcuts and keep safety at the forefront. “Everyone deserves to be safe in their workplace and the construction industry is no different,” Mr Hopkins said. “With the number of high risk elements that our members are exposed to every day, it’s crucial that everyone does their part to make sure we all return home safely to our families at the end of the day.” The consortium has released a safety video for local residential industry members to highlight how to prioritise safety.

First home buyers in Canberra will need to save for six years on average for an entry-level house deposit, according to a new report from Domain. The Domain First Home Buyers report revealed with rising property prices it would now take a couple an additional nine months to save for a 20% deposit on an entry-level priced home, compared with this time last year. Canberra saw the biggest jump in timeframes of any capital city, followed by Sydney, Hobart and Darwin with a six-month increase. Over five years, the savings timeframe for ACT first home buyers has increased by nearly two years. For units, there was no change from last year, with a couple taking on average three years and five

months to save a 20% deposit. In Canberra, first home buyers would need to save for an additional two years and seven months to save for an entry-level house versus a unit. “While we have witnessed firsthome buyers purchasing in close to record numbers, taking advantage of low interest rates, tax cuts, and federal and state government incentives, those attempting to save for an initial deposit are facing challenges of their own,” said Domain senior research analyst, Dr Nicola Powell. “Rising living costs, low wage growth, weak savings rates and rapidly rising property prices are all factors that immediately impact the opportunity for first-home buyers to enter the property market.”
