Fabulous recipes to share in lockdown

contents 14 From the editor Greetings dear readers, Just checking in to see how you’re faring in lockdown. I hope you’re taking care of yourself in ways that nourish and nurture you. For me, this is done in a various small ways. Regular exercise – whether that’s an uplifting one-hour walk amid nature at our local reserve, yoga, or a spot of cardio and stretching. Taking time to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us – our vibrant bird life, bare trees ready to bud or blossom, a full moon on the horizon or sunset over the Brindabellas. Eating nourishing food prepared from quality ingredients. Phoning a friend or loved one for a chat. Reading a good book and watching TV programs or films I enjoy. A spot of gardening. And sometimes, it means turning off the news for a while. Find what floats your boat in lockdown and do it! Our wellbeing writer, Wesley Smith, offers some sage advice in his fortnightly column on page 20. Please check it out. Reasons to be grateful this past week include glorious weekend weather for one-hour walks in the local nature reserve, steely-grey clouds daubed across a melon horizon as the sun sets behind blue hills, a full moon peeking through the clouds, a flock of King parrots gnawing on seed pods in a tree, and Jamila’s beetroot brownies. Take care,

AIS Arena to be stood up as mass vaccination hub Having sat empty since June last year, the ACT Government is investigating commandeering the AIS Arena at Bruce for a mass vaccination site as they look to expand the local COVID vaccine rollout. On Tuesday 24 August, ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said a mass vaccination hub at the AIS Arena could open as early as next month. “As soon as we’re able to open bookings for that with the additional supply, we will do that — we expect it to be early next month,” she said on ABC Radio Canberra. The move to stand up AIS Arena will be tied to access to the Pfizer vaccination for 16- to 29-year-olds once supply makes it to the ACT. More than 12,000 Canberrans aged 16-29 registered on MyDHR website for a Pfizer vaccine at an ACT Government-led clinic on the first day registrations opened to them.

Bookings for this age cohort will open in September with jabs slated to commence in October. There are 85,000 Canberrans aged 16-29 of whom 21,000 are already vaccinated as part of earlier priority rounds. “We are leading the nation in the rollout, and I expect that the ACT will continue to be above the national average in the months ahead as supply increases,” Chief Minister Andrew Barr said. Mr Barr said he anticipated it would take some time to vaccinate that age group based on the available supply of Pfizer. Given the supply constraints, he said it was “seriously worth considering” an AstraZeneca jab following a discussion with a health professional. Mr Barr said the vaccine registration process worked “extremely well” for Canberra residents

aged 30 to 39 years, with more than 20,000 people in this age group in the ACT booking an appointment on the first day of eligibility. Meanwhile, children aged 12 to 15 living with a disability were added to Australia’s coronavirus vaccine rollout on Wednesday 25 August. The decision is expected to affect 40,000 National Disability Insurance Scheme participants across the country who did not qualify under other eligibility criteria. MyDHR online registration requires a Medicare card and an existing patient record at an ACT public health facility. For assistance registering or if you do not have a Medicare card, you can call the booking helpline on 5124 7700. Support Sarah’s hope of a cancer-free future this Daffodil Day

For the past 25 years, 43-year-old Sarah McGoram’s life has been an uphill battle, but she is desperate to remain eternally optimistic despite her mountain of challenges. Diagnosed with a rare stage four cancer

called Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumours (GIST) just after her 18th birthday and told she only had 12 months to live was heartbreaking and traumatic for Sarah and her family. She says the most important thing in life is to make the most of every day because you never know when it will be your last. Sarah owes her life to the vital medical research funded by organisations such as the Cancer Council through its annual Daffodil Day Appeal, which this year falls on Friday 27 August. “When I was diagnosed with GIST, I was told there were no treatments and no cure so the doctors sent me home from the hospital and wished me luck,” she said. “Without Daffodil Day funding medical research, I wouldn’t be alive today so it’s essential for improving the lives of people living with cancer – it’s our ticket out.” With COVID-19 restrictions impacting all of Canberra, the Daffodil Day Appeal has had to get creative with their fundraising campaign this year. Cancer Council ACT marketing manager Amanda Fintan says there’s still a number of ways people can get behind the campaign. “If you are one of the wonderful people who would usually purchase fresh daffodils, we’re counting on you to show your flower power in

a different way and help save Daffodil Day,” she said. Here’s how you can support people like Sarah on Daffodil Day this Friday 27 August: • Make an online donation at daffodilday.com. au/donate • Have fresh bunches of daffodils delivered to your home or workplace for a minimum donation of $100 thanks to the help of Canberra FM. • Become a Yellow Fundraiser by getting active in yellow, giving up something you love for the month of August and registering at daffodilday.com.au/donatedaffodilday. com.au/fundraise-your-way/ • Join the Game for Good Campaign at tiltify. com/cancer-council-australia/game-forgood • Get the kids involved and enter the Daffodil Day colouring/scavenger hunt competition with the chance to win their very own daffodil bicycle at actcancer.org/ fundraising-and-events/daffodil-day-2021/ colour-or-find-the-daffodils-for-yourchance-to-win/ - Abbey Halter If you or your loved one is affected by cancer and you are concerned about the impact of COVID-19, please call Cancer Council’s free and confidential 13 11 20 Information and Support line.

Traffic noise driving Amaroo residents to despair Constant traffic noise from a Gungahlin arterial road is tormenting residents of an Amaroo street. Houses on Buckingham Street back onto busy Horse Park Drive – and the people who live in the street say they can’t use their backyards, can’t open their windows, and can’t sleep at night. “The noise just batters you down,” said resident Zeljko Pekic. “You can’t sit outside for extended periods, simply because the noise just gets to you. Your stress levels, your health levels, your ability to enjoy your own home, are decreased. It’s almost like mental torture.” Mr Pekic and other Buckingham Street residents want the ACT Government to erect a noise reduction barrier along Horse Park Drive, but government surveys have found that the noise is acceptable, so state no noise wall is needed. Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS) surveyed noise levels from Horse Park Drive in Buckingham Street from two separate residences – Mr Pekic’s house and another – and determined that the noise level was below the target level of 60 decibels by day and 55 dB by night.

6

canberraweekly.com.au

Mr Pekic said he was frustrated with the findings. “The government says the levels are acceptable; have they sat outside and tried to listen to 53 dB car sounds constantly during the day for 15 hours?” Mr Pekic has measured noise readings in his street himself; the average level seems to be in the mid-50s to low 60s, and reaches 78 dB when a truck went past and 82 dB from a Harley Davidson. He claims the TCCS report is incomplete; although the TCCS surveyors were in his street for 14 days, the table used only seven days of data. He has asked the government for a more detailed report and for previous reports on Horse Park Drive noise levels. He has also asked Chris Steel, Minister for Transport and City Services, to come listen to the noise himself. The road surface level of Horse Park Drive is just above Mr Pekic’s fence line. He said his family cannot open windows or sliding doors as “the noise blasts straight in”. Trucks deliver to nearby building sites and

supermarkets every day, Mr Pekic said. Eighteenwheeler semis take off like a bat out of hell from the intersection of Mulligan’s Flat and Horse Park Drive, and police sirens of 100 dB come screaming by his house three or four nights a week, en route to Bonner. Mr Pekic expects the noise to get only worse. The nearby suburb of Taylor is half-finished, while another 1,000 blocks of Jacka are being built, he said. When they are, traffic volumes will increase. Mr Pekic and his neighbours believe their street desperately needs a noise mitigation screen, as the government has erected in other suburbs, such as along Gundaroo Park Drive or Pro Hart Avenue. There is one small screen, constructed before Horse Park Drive was duplicated, at the intersection of Mulligans Flat Road and Horse Park Drive that shields three houses. “So it was considered essential to put it there – but literally 20m up the road, it’s not essential,” Mr Pekic said. - Nick Fuller

With the Paralympic Games underway in Tokyo from 24 August to 5 September, 23 ACT athletes are taking part as part of the Australian Paralympic Team. Australia has sent its largest team ever, with a contingent of 179 athletes competing across 18 sports. The ACT athletes will be representing Australia across a range of sports including athletics, rowing, triathlon, and swimming events.

Giants win sets up all-Sydney final GWS locked in an AFL elimination final derby clash with Sydney after securing their top-eight spot with a 14-point win over Carlton on Saturday 21 August. The Blues came out determined to send club great Eddie Betts out on a high, but the Giants pegged them back to complete a 12.17 (89) to 11.9 (75) win. The victory sealed 7th spot on the ladder and a finals meeting with the Swans on Saturday 28 August in Launceston. It will be the third finals

clash between the Sydney rivals since 2016 with the Giants holding a 2-0 record.

Raiders fade again as finals hopes slip The Raiders’ top-eight hopes have taken a massive hit after blowing a 12-point halftime lead to fall 19-18 to Manly on Friday 20 August. The Raiders looked to have the measure of the Sea Eagles in a gritty first half that played into their hands as they ran up a 12-0 lead. However, Manly came out running after the break as the tired Raiders conceded 19 straight points. The loss leaves the 10th-placed Raiders needing to win their last two matches against the Warriors and Roosters to have any chance of playing finals. Meanwhile, centre Curtis Scott was sacked by the Raiders earlier this week after the board decided to terminate his contract. The troubled 23-yearold’s career was in the balance after two major off-field incidents since joining Canberra from Melbourne 18 months ago.

opinion Keep up the good work Ken Behrens We’re now entering our third week of lockdown in the ACT following the confirmation of the first COVID case in more than a year in the territory. Like many Canberrans, I have been thankful for the leadership of Andrew Barr and the ACT Government for taking the necessary and swift action to keep our community safe, and everything that Canberrans have been doing in response. Thank you to all the Canberrans who have got tested, quarantined and stayed home, and to all the essential workers supporting us all. This lockdown comes in the context of a dire COVID situation nationally, with more than 13 million Australians subject to stay-at-home orders as the Delta strain wreaks havoc across our communities in the face of struggling vaccination rates. Last year as we went into a national lockdown, the Federal Government provided the JobKeeper wage subsidy to support businesses to stay afloat and to keep their employees on. We are now facing an equally

bad, if not worse situation, and the Morrison Government should be providing similar supports again. The current assistance available from the Morrison Government is only provided to designated hotspots. Canberra businesses are telling me that they need certainty beyond our lockdown. The situation nationally affects us all and requires a national response. Last year the Federal Government also doubled the JobSeeker unemployment payment, acknowledging that people couldn’t live on $40 a day and also that this was an important stimulus to the economy. They lifted half a million people out of poverty, but then delivered a permanent increase of only $3.50 a day. A social safety net that that allows all Australians to live with dignity is essential at all times, and particularly in a pandemic. In the thick of this bad news and rising case numbers, it can be easy to lose hope. Canberrans have faced the hardships of the COVID-19 pandemic with resilience and by

doing the right thing by each other and that is why this time around with the latest outbreak, I know our response will be no different. We know our best line of defence against the virus is vaccination. It’s inspiring to see so many Canberrans coming out in force to be vaccinated as they get their opportunity. We now have the highest rate of vaccination in the country, with 36.24 per cent of people over 16 being fully vaccinated. It was welcome news this week that 16-29-year-olds will now be able to register to get vaccinated, particularly as younger Canberrans have been most impacted by the current outbreak. The outbreak has shown the Delta strain is highly infectious in children. Our kids aren’t vaccinated and won’t be for a while yet. Going out and getting vaccinated is the best thing we can do by our children in this outbreak. Thank you Ken Behrens for everything you are doing to keep our community safe. It’s not easy, but we will get through this.

Secure your Speckles at the Speckles in the Capital Sale The inaugural Lennock Ram Speckles in the Capital sale presents a rare opportunity for local farmers to purchase worldclass Speckle Park cattle. Scheduled to run on 18 September, the sale will forge ahead on location at SELX Yass in a predominantly online, Covidsafe manner with viewings by appointment available. Speckles in the Capital is the brainchild of Gerard Walsh and Alex Pateman, the principals of Kikiamah and Rose Hill Speckle Park studs, who recognised a lack of Speckle cattle in the Canberra region and wanted to distribute the breed throughout the area. Traditionally, Speckle Parks are a moderate framed, early maturing animal that produces a high yielding, high quality finished carcass at 14-18 months. First bred in Canada, the breed suits southern Australian conditions to a tee, thriving through the relatively mild winters (compared to -40oC in Canada) and comfortably managing the dry, hot summers. Gerard said Speckles in the Capital will promote the Monaro and Southern NSW region to the rest of the country as an exceptional cattle region. Looking to establish the sale as an annual event for years to come, he hopes it will draw people to the region in due time when travel restrictions allow. “We’re hoping this is not a one-off sale,” Gerard said. The high-yield, fertile Speckle cattle are ideally suited to a variety of farmers. For larger cattle operations traditionally turning off bigger framed, later finishing cattle,

Speckles present a second revenue stream; joining older cows and heifers to a Speckle bull will produce a high-quality calf at a younger age. Speckles also present advantages to NSW South Coast dairy farmers; using a Speckle bull over dairy heifers can add considerable value to their calves too. With somewhere in excess of 2,500 small farms within a 200km radius of Canberra, Gerard said Speckles are also ideal for the discerning small holding farmer looking to maximise their profits with high performance front paddock cattle. “They’re an easy doing, good foraging cattle well suited to the region,” he said. Alex said the Speckles in the Capital sale boasts the most diverse offering of leading Speckle Park genetics ever consigned in Australia. On offer at the sale are premium quality Speckle Park bulls and Speckle Park females from the widest Speckle Park genetics base of any sale. Over 100 lots are up for auction from 12 southern NSW studs, meaning a wide variety of genetics will be available throughout the sale. The sale will consist of 80-plus live stud lots along with genetics packages including semen and embryos. The Speckles in the Capital sale will be held at Southern Eastern Livestock Exchange (SELX) in Yass, prominently located just off the Hume Highway. Interested online buyers must register via the Auctions Plus website prior to the sale.

The Inaugural

On offer at the Speckles in the Capital sale are premium quality Speckle Park bulls and Speckle Park females from the widest Speckle Park genetics base of any sale.

The cattle will be on location at SELX, with arranged inspections available from the afternoon of Friday 17 September. For those unable to attend, videos of the individual cattle will be uploaded to Auctions Plus two weeks prior to the sale.

Local and interstate transport post-sale can also be arranged. The Speckles in the Capital sale will run Saturday 18 September at SELX, Yass. The Speckle Park infused cattle sale starting at 10am and the Speckle Park Stud cattle and genetics sale 12pm; visit agstock.com.au for more.

Heat oil in a large, deep oven proof frying pan over medium-high heat. Add garlic and onion and cook for 4-5 minutes or until softened. Add vinegar, maple syrup, chilli, coriander, paprika, salt and pepper, and cook for another minute.

1 cup lukewarm water Olive oil, for greasing 4 garlic cloves, crushed 4 sprigs fresh rosemary 3/4 tsp McKenzie’s natural sea salt In a large bowl mix flour, yeast and salt until well combined. Make a well in the centre and add lukewarm water and a drizzle of olive oil. Using a spatula, bring mixture together into a dough. Place onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place dough into a greased bowl, cover with cling wrap or a clean tea towel and set aside to rise in a warm place for approx. 60 minutes or until doubled in size. Punch down dough with fists, then turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead again for 2 minutes. Roll dough with rolling pin into an approx. 8mm thick rectangle.

Stir in the tomatoes, beans and stock. Allow to cook for 8-10 minutes or until sauce has thickened and tomatoes have broken down.

Brush a 23 x 33cm baking tray with oil then transfer dough to greased tray, gently pressing dough into sides to fit the tray. Let dough sit in a warm place for approx. 30 minutes or until it is doubled in height.

Crack the eggs into the pan and sprinkle with parmesan. Bake for 15 minutes or until eggs are set. Cover and set aside to keep warm.

While dough is sitting, preheat the oven to 220°C (200°C fan forced). Mix crushed garlic cloves with olive oil and rosemary.

Place the Delcado avocados in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Mash to a rough consistency using a fork.

With the end of a wooden spoon or fingertips, dimple the dough surface at evenly spaced intervals and brush the surface with the garlic, oil and rosemary mixture. Sprinkle with salt.

Spread the avocado mixture generously over the toast slices and cut into soldiers. Serve the Delcado soldiers with the baked eggs and extra parmesan. Recipe and image courtesy of Delcado Avocados; delcado.com.au

Whisk together the butter, sugar, vanilla, and cocoa powder until light and creamy. Whisk in the eggs, one at a time. Gently fold in the flour, hazelnut meal and chocolate until just combined. Put the rhubarb in the base of a greased ovenproof frying pan (the one I used is 25cm) or baking dish and spread evenly. Dot with the marshmallows and spoon the chocolate batter over the top. Bake for 30 minutes or until puffed and slightly crispy on the edge. This can be served a bit underdone, like a selfsaucing pudding. While you can’t explore Canberra’s national institutions in person right now, you’ll find loads of information and activities on their websites. File images.

Explore the national institutions in lockdown, virtually Canberra’s national institutions are closed to the public during lockdown, but their websites offer plenty of ideas to keep youngsters occupied. Pay them a visit – online! Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD) Federal Parliament is sitting in Canberra this week, and children can learn about our political system at Old Parliament House’s living museum of social and political history – the Museum of Australian Democracy (MoAD). The award-winning OnAir PlayUp series is aimed at preschool children. Each episode includes facilitated activities, and is accompanied by a downloadable guide (that includes helpful craft instructions!). The episodes are themed, so you’ll find something to suit your family’s interests and they’re all packed with games to play, books to read, and songs to sing, a MoAD spokesperson said. Recent topics include National Threatened Species Day, World Humanitarian Day, National Science Week, National Tree Day, and the International Day of Friendship. MoAD also has learning

resources aimed at primary and secondary students learning about Australian democracy; topics cover women in politics, civics and citizenship, sustainable change makers, how young people can make a difference, and more. There are digital workshops, activity sheet downloads, online image galleries, podcasts, and plenty of practical resources. W: moadoph.gov.au

National Museum of Australia The National Museum of Australia has fun at home DIY activities for children and families – ideal for hands-on kids. Make a box car, paintings, puppets, toy theatres, woven animals, sculptures, and toys using materials found at home and in nature. The Museum from Home has much to engage both adults and children. You can explore the collection and exhibitions through broadcasts and recorded Q&A sessions with curators and staff;

find out about the Museum’s car collection; or learn about key people and defining events in Australian history. If you’re looking for engaging activities linked to the Australian curriculum, the Digital Classroom features learning modules, games, quizzes, and primary sources that can be filtered according to a child’s year level and area of study. Students can learn about prehistoric Australia, the struggle for Indigenous rights, Ned Kelly, the gold rush, and more, or journey through Australian history. “At the National Museum of Australia, we care about all the people at home, and hopefully these will give them some ideas of activities to do during lockdown,” said Senior Families programmer, Amanda Coleman. W: nma.gov.au

National Gallery of Australia The National Gallery of Australia offers art activities and learning resources, virtual tours and a gallery walkthrough, and documentaries. Artist activities, developed

by artists in collaboration with the NGA’s learning team, are guaranteed to bring out the artist in everyone. From making koalas to crafting Ned Kelly masks, these activities often use materials you can find around the home, so will keep the whole family entertained. Students of all ages can learn about art and artists with the NGA’s extensive range of online and classroom resources. They can take a Virtual Interactive Lesson of Sidney Nolan and Ned Kelly or meet Patricia Piccinini’s Skywhale family and investigate concepts of love, care and responsibility in relation to ourselves, families and the wider world. You can take a virtual tour of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander galleries and see the world’s largest collection of Australia’s First Nations art from your own device, or reconsider Australia’s history of colonisation through a presentation of 19thcentury Australian art informed by Indigenous and non-Indigenous artists. section for schoolchildren on their website. It includes classroom resources, a section for arts and crafts, a virtual tour of the Memorial, and a variety of Online Exhibitions directed at school aged students. The Virtual Tour is a great way to view the Commemorative Area and view the Pool of Reflection and the Roll of Honour, said a Memorial spokesperson. Teachers, students, and parents can find:

• Tiny Tours – short films for early learners which encompass a tour and craft activity • Virtually There – 30-minute films that encourage primary and secondary students to explore the Australian War Memorial and its collection • On Closer Inspection – take a look inside some of the Memorial’s large technology objects • Virtual visit – use Google Street View to explore the Memorial at your own pace • Art of Nation – explore photographs and works of art in the way that Memorial founder Charles Bean had intended, in the space that he designed in 1919 A high school teacher got in touch with the AWM last lockdown to discuss how he could use the Memorial’s Education resources, the spokesperson said. He organised a “digital scavenger hunt” for his students. They used

Google Street View to find some objects on display, and Art of Nation to find some specific art works and photographs that related to their unit of work. There is also a fascinating section of Stories of people who have served for Australia. It includes stories from World War I and World War II, stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander wartime service, and post1945 conflicts. For older children, there are podcasts through the ‘Museum at Home’. They can also research veterans in their families and view their photographs and stories. Another page to highlight is the 3D Treasures page which allows the viewer to see items of the collection up close and in 3D. “It’s really amazing to see the detail,” the spokesperson said. Now showing Disclosure (MA15+) Free-living journalist Danny Bowman (Mark Leonard Winter) and his documentary filmmaker wife Emily (Matilda Ridgway) are skinny dipping in their backyard pool when they are unexpectedly visited by their friends, local politician Joel Chalmers (Tom Wren) and wife Bek (Geraldine Hakewill) with a bodyguard in tow. The Chalmers wish to talk about the Bowmans’ young daughter’s accusations of abuse by their son! Shot on a micro-budget, the movie’s strength is its script and its actors. Shot conservatively in limited locations, the movie is like a play, making the most of its actors in each frame. The subject matter is heavy and deals with an incredibly difficult conversation

among friends. Each character comes to the conversation from their own angle; Emily has the care of her child at the forefront, while Danny balances the couple’s friendship, and his precarious book deal, as a factor. Joel has his political aspirations to worry about, and Bek brings along her own trauma from similar experiences. Unlike 2017’s The Dinner, there are no interruptions to getting down to the nittygritty of the difficult issues explored. As the conversation continues, relationships strain, desperate tactics are used, and tempers flare! The look is quite harsh under the bright Australian sun; a larger budget may have improved the filming and grading of the picture.

In Plain Sight by Ross Coulthart Harper Collins, $34.99

Book talk: 3 great books for Father’s Day Jeff Popple reviews three great books for Dad this Father’s Day! More of Jeff’s reviews can be found on his blog: murdermayhemandlongdogs.com by Jake Avila Echo, $29.99

Those dads who like exciting adventure novels will enjoy Jake Avila’s Cave Diver. Set in the jungles of Papua, it is an enjoyable tale about an expedition to uncover a sunken World War II Japanese submarine buried deep in a large underwater cavern. The submarine contains gold smuggled out of Japan at the end of the war, and a motley collection of treasure hunters and crooks are hellbent on retrieving it. Caught in the middle is Australian diver Rob Nash, who sees the expedition as a chance for redemption for a past mistake. A gripping, action-filled thriller.

WISDOM WITHIN

This is a marvellous book for dads who are into conspiracies and UFOs. Following the admission by the United States Department of Defense in 2020 that there have been confirmed sightings of unexplainable aerial objects over the years, award-winning Australian journalist Ross Coulthart set out to investigate. Drawing on interviews with witnesses, scientists and highranking officials, Coulthart gives a clear-eyed and convincing account of the various sightings, including some Australian examples, and the efforts to cover them up. A fascinating book that raises many questions and elevates the discussion about UFOs above the realm of crackpots and conspiracy theorists.

Sweet Jimmy by Bryan Brown Allen & Unwin, $29.99

Popular actor Bryan Brown makes an impressive entry into Australian literary ranks with his first collection of short stories, Sweet Jimmy. Written in a stripped-down, unadorned style, these crisp stories skirt the fringes of Australian noir as Brown takes the reader down some very familiar mean streets. Featuring cops, thieves, drug dealers and suburban girls of the night, these stories are full of wit, humour and heartbreak and have a strong Australian feel to them. A terrific collection of gritty tales. Even dads who do not read a lot will enjoy these knockabout stories by an Australian icon. Recommended.

Enjoy the little things I don’t know about you but adjusting to ‘lockdown life’ has been more of a rollercoaster this time around. I’ve found myself doom scrolling the newsfeed, nervously checking exposure sites, worrying over the number mystery cases, not to mention the situation unfolding in NSW. Sure, some of it is necessary in order to stay informed, but a lot of it is probably more an unconscious and futile attempt to feel a bit more in control. When we feel vulnerable, when our lives are disrupted, when we’re placed in uncomfortable situations, our instincts are to brace against the current circumstances and wait for it to pass. It can work okay if the discomfort is fleeting, but living through a pandemic is more akin to dealing with chronic pain. Years ago, I learned something interesting about chronic pain. Those afflicted are almost never in pain 100 per cent of the time; their pain generally ebbs and flows or even stops for hours but eventually it returns.

WITH WESLEY SMITH DIRECTOR, LIVE WELL HOLISTIC WELLNESS CENTRE MANUKA LIVEWELLNATURALLY.COM.AU

What we know happens in the mind of someone dealing with chronic pain is that they are either in pain or anticipating being in pain and, either way, they spend every waking moment bracing against their pain whether it is actually there or not. Worse still, the nervous system of someone in chronic pain acts like an echo chamber – amplifying and reinforcing the discomfort. What does this have to do with lockdown? One very effective technique taught to those suffering with chronic pain is to become more adept at noticing the spaces between episodes of pain and learning how, when not in pain, to relax the unconscious bracing. Those times of neutral sensation act like a balm to the nervous system and they find they can breathe, move, and hold themselves differently and, in time, their chronic pain improves. If we focus on the pain of lockdown – the things that we can’t do or the things we are worried about – then we are certain to amplify

the uneasiness. If, on the other hand, you can notice the neutral times – the rituals and habits that remain the same, perhaps you still sit down for family meal together, or you snuggle up in your favourite chair or spot in the garden with a good book, a cup of tea or a glass of wine – it can really help create some ballast for your mind that can bring much needed respite. If you like this idea, try making a list of all the little things that you can and still do despite lockdown. Kind of like a gratitude diary but more of a ‘steadiness’ diary. It’s also possible that lockdown can bring some benefits, for example, some people love working from home. For me, I’ve rediscovered a love of running which I’m really appreciating. So, you can also add these lockdown bonuses to your list too. Keep in mind, it’s still going to hurt sometimes, but hopefully you can find some much needed respite as well as moments of joy along the way.

ACT real estate market under increasing pressure The ACT real estate market has been under increasing pressure due to the current COVID-19 lockdown restrictions. Chief Executive Officer of the Real Estate Institute of ACT Michelle Tynan says the biggest issue her industry is facing is the lack of supply of new stock while the current market is dwindling. “We can’t get building inspections, reports, video footage and photos of properties which means we can’t bring many new homes to the market,” Ms Tynan said. “We respect and understand the health advice and are trying our hardest to keep people safe but we will have to figure out how to move forward under the current restrictions.” The pressure has been mounting on real estate agents to keep the market moving during

these uncertain times. Auctions have been moved to Zoom as the main bidding portal and agents say it lacks the atmosphere of a big crowd. Has someone been critical of you – or has your behaviour been called critical? If so, it’s time to take the pressure off and reconnect by establishing common ground. If you find events challenging, a ‘wait and see’ policy may appeal until the dust settles. Meanwhile, be handson and proactive.

You’ll enjoy a sociable weekend, but must remember the adage ‘all things in moderation’ for best measure. Key developments are on the cards, for some financially, for others at work and in your personal life. avoid retreating from a tough circumstance; see it through to a positive outcome, which is possible.

conversations will set a ball rolling in a new direction and romance could blossom. be practical with arrangements, as someone may be forgetful – perhaps even you! Manage relationships carefully and be tactful to avoid a battle of wills that will spiral into conflict. financially, avoid impulse buys you’ll regret.

an organised approach to talks, finances and socialising will be productive. take challenges in your stride and focus on the positives daily. You’re known for being practical, and yet your plans can be based on high expectations that are hard to live up to. You’re about to discover if your ideas are realistic or idealistic.

fresh ideas will encourage you to seek new pastures and at the very least a more balanced life. avoid misunderstandings at work, especially towards friday. current times may feel a little antagonistic, so take things gradually and avoid stubbornness. for some lucky virgos, there will be romance galore, so take the initiative!

You’ll manage to adapt your timetable to suit an unexpected change of circumstance, but you must avoid rash decisions. You’re able to see the big picture in your plans but if you currently see only the obstacles, details or even mistakes, be prepared to progress more creatively and with more insight.

Your relationships will be a focus as you strive to maintain balance in your love life. this is potentially a romantic weekend, but you must avoid impulsiveness. You may feel sensitive or fatigued or must look after someone who is tired. It’s a good time to boost health. consider a fresh take on finances.

You’re a go-ahead personality, and so when obstacles arise, you feel restless. Key events will encourage you to move forward, which you’ll do by being adaptable, but a rash word spoken out of context could undo much of your good work. spend time with those you love and enjoy favourite activities together.

a new circumstance will revitalise your work or home life. Key conversations or a trip will take you into fresh terrain and events will be motivating. It’s an excellent time to boost your health and looks. a trip somewhere beautiful will be reenergising. avoid forgetfulness, as you may be prone to daydreaming.

relationships could blossom over coming weeks, especially if interactions have been strained lately. look for more mutual understanding. It’s a good time to kindle romance, but you must avoid impulsiveness. Key health and work developments will catch your eye. It’s a good time to find more work-life balance and to boost health.

You like a treat and there’s no better week to unwind. COLLECTION OF VINTAGE VASES

Photo Kerrie Brewer

I love my collection of vintage vases on my windowsill at work as they embrace the joy of colour, light and mid-century design. I’m fascinated with how vintage objects can be so emotionally potent, can trigger memories and open up conversation.

Jodie Cunningham

MY PINK FINK JUG

Walking in the bush in on Ngunnawal land in Canberra is so enriching. I love being on Mt Ainslie, discovering the little wildflower treasures and breathing in Canberra’s fresh air.

The epitome of beautiful contemporary design, designed by the late Robert Foster of FINK, a gift from a dear friend in my favourite colour and an exemplar of the amazing innovation and skill of Canberra makers.

CEO + Artistic Director, Craft ACT and Design Centre Jodie Cunningham is a highly creative arts leader, visual artist and educator with extensive experience in developing and delivering innovative exhibitions, art installations and public programs in museums, galleries and art contexts. She also has an extensive background in visual art and design education and a commitment to mentoring developing artists and fostering collaboration. Cunningham advocates for the power of creativity, the arts and cultural activity to provide hope to our communities, strengthen our local and national cultural identities, and facilitate social change. She lives in a hot pink house and, when not attempting to transform society though the arts, she makes art works exploring the themes of colour, pattern, symbolism and the emotional resonance of objects in her studio at m16artspace. She delights in making the world more colourful, parenting her gorgeous children and managing her menagerie of pets.

MY ART STUDIO My art studio at m16artspace, a place full of delicious art supplies and creative possibilities, where I can escape into ideas, make my own art and mentor local emerging artists.

THE GOODRADIGBEE RIVER A special place for my family where we enjoy long treks into the wilderness, campfires, stars, and I occasionally catch a trout whilst attempting to flyfish. canberraweekly.com.au
