From the editor On Sunday, I spent a delightful afternoon at a Thanksgiving party hosted by a dear friend who was born in the USA and has since made her home in Australia. We gathered on the party boat for a pleasant two-hour cruise on the lake, as we shared friendship, stories, and delicious traditional Thanksgiving fare supplemented by tasty contributions from guests. Of all the holidays, Thanksgiving is my friend’s favourite for several reasons – it hasn’t been commercialised, there’s no gift giving involved, and it’s fundamentally about being grateful. It’s a day to focus on the things you’re thankful for in your life: “Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have” in the words of Rabbi Hyman Schachtel. My top memories of the Thanksgiving Day I spent in California as a 17-year-old exchange student is of my host Mum’s delicious cranberry stuffing and silky pumpkin pie. (Little wonder I stacked on the pounds that year!) I feel fortunate to live in a relatively safe, multicultural city like Canberra. Most citizens are generous, empathetic, and welcoming and accepting of diversity (at least, that’s been my experience over the past four decades here). Reasons to be grateful this past week include treasured friendships, delicious food, a scintillating night at Canberra Symphony’s Living Green concert, fun and laughter at Metaverse of Magic, a family birthday celebration, and living in Canberra, Australia. Take care,

Canberra man’s emotional reunion with fragments from his past

R

eunions can be emotional and heartwarming but here’s one reunion – after being separated for 54 years – that recently happened in Canberra. It’s out of this world. When Higgins resident Chris Carson was eight years old and sitting on a bus in the Victorian town of Benalla, he witnessed a meteorite plummet to Earth. He never imagined one day he’d hold that seven-billion-year-old space rock as a project geologist at Geoscience Australia. It was an emotional moment when they met again. The small boy who was on his way home from Sunday school when he saw a brilliant white flash, now grasped the Murchison meteorite with child-like awe. “Wow, look at that, that is remarkable,” Chris said, as the meteorite fragment was taken out of a safe with protective, white gloves. “That was fantastic just to pick it up, actually, it was quite special to reconnect after having seen it fall in 1969. “I just happened to be looking out the window, right place at the right time. It was a clear, bright blue, sunny sky and I saw this brilliant white flash low on the western horizon. I knew enough about space and astronomy and all of those things to realise that it was a meteorite and I didn’t think anything of it at the time.” It’s been a long and winding road to reunite Chris and the Murchison meteorite. The young Chris had ambitions to be an 6

astronaut (it was the year of the moon landing) but, with job opportunities scarce, Chris dropped out of astrophysics at uni and settled for something closer to home, Earth. His academic journey took him to universities in Tasmania, Melbourne, Sydney, Yale in the US, Canada’s arctic, and finally, a job in Canberra. Here, he locked eyes with the meteorite in a glass display cabinet in the foyer of Geoscience Australia in Symonston. “I didn’t know there was a fragment here until I got here. It was completely coincidental,” he said. “It was that nice closure of seeing it fall when I was an eight-year-old boy ... and here I am 50 something years later, being able to pick it up and hold it.” As he holds the meteorite, he’s visibly moved and transported back to 28 September 1969. “As soon as I hold it I can picture in my mind’s eye the flash of bright white light in a bright blue sky,” he said. “If I had’ve been looking anywhere else I would have missed it. “When I look at this, I see that flash in my eye from over 50 years ago. I still go back to Benalla to visit my elderly mum ... and I walk past the spot where I saw the flash in the sky, it looks exactly the same as what it did in 1969. It’s exciting. Here I am holding it, it’s quite remarkable.” Chris still goes star-gazing regularly with a telescope set up at home. “I do go out when the major meteorite showers are expected because there’s always the possibility

it could be a fantastic show. “ As an adult, Chris is still filled with child-like wonder about the Murchison meteorite and so is the world. It is the most studied meteorite known. “The thing I find absolutely astonishing about this is there’s material in here that predates the solar system,” he said. “I think that’s astonishing – half the age of the universe. There are fragments in the Murchison meteorite that are over seven billion years old, much older than the solar system and it was very special to hold something that old that represents something primordial in the formation of the universe.” Pieces of the Murchison meteorite (fragments weighing up to 7kg were found scattered over more than 13 square kilometres) are held at Geoscience Australia and other universities. Curator of Geoscience Australia’s National Mineral and Fossil Collection, Steven Petkovski, said the Murchison meteorite was one of the most studied meteorites known. “Research studies into its makeup have continued over the decades with exciting new discoveries made regularly,” Steven said. “For example, it has a water content of around eight per cent, which may hold clues as to why we have water here on Earth. Perhaps, most significantly, a recent study revealed it contains the oldest material ever found on Earth in the form of seven-billion-year-old stardust grains. This is two-and-a-half billion years older than our Earth and solar system.” The Murchison meteorite fragment and other significant space rocks are on display and available for research at the National Mineral and Fossil collection at Geoscience Australia; www.ga.gov.au canberradaily.com.au

news Laura Nuttall first Gen Z elected to ACT Legislative Assembly Johnathan Davis, former Member for Brindabella, resigned from the Legislative Assembly earlier this month. But his successor, announced in a callback of votes on Monday, is once again both an ACT Green and the youngest member of the Assembly – indeed the youngest Greens politician in the country: 24– year-old Laura Nuttall. “I’m elated and honoured to represent the people of Brindabella,” Ms Nuttall said. “I’m very excited as the first Gen Z representative here in this Parliament. I don’t think we should stop there for young people. We’re going to be the ones living with the policies of this government for the longest time to come, so I think we need a voice as soon as possible, and as early as possible. “I joined the Greens and started getting active because I really fundamentally care about people and about the environment.” Ms Nuttall said she will listen to her electorate, and take her cues from what they want. “As a representative, it’s my job to get as much love as possible down south, a little bit of TLC, so that’s what I’ll be working towards.”

On a larger scale, Ms Nuttall wants to fix the inequality crisis; advocate for policies that help young people, like better rent controls; and look after Namadgi National Park (two-thirds of the area of her electorate). “I plan on bringing my 110 per cent; I think the people of Brindabella are 100 per cent worth it, and I just want to be a conduit for the ideas of the really smart people around me and all the people in the community.” Ms Nuttall graduated in July from the Australian National University with a degree in Asia Pacific studies, politics, philosophy, and economics, then worked with Libraries ACT. She joined the Greens in 2018, and worked for more than two years as a parttime Greens policy adviser. “I’m so lucky to have had experience in the Assembly, and a basic understanding of how it works,” Ms Nuttall said. “I got my passion working on sports policy, looking at things like blue-green algae, and hearing from all the constituents coming to us with issues that they needed solving. I’m hoping to continue to

channel that passion and that understanding of the way the Assembly works to bring as many voices forward as possible.” While Ms Nuttall’s youth has concerned some commentators, both she and ACT Greens leader Shane Rattenbury believe that is an advantage. “A Legislative Assembly is made up of 25 representatives,” Ms Nuttall said. “Until now, we haven’t had a single Gen Z voice in parliament. Gen Z people are voting age, we’re the ones dealing with the brunt of the housing crisis and the cost of living. I think that adding that voice to the table is a really important element.” “It’s very important that we hear from Laura’s generation,” Mr Rattenbury said. “They’ve got big stakes in the future.” Ms Nuttall was elected through a callback of votes at lunchtime on Monday, supervised by the ACT Electoral Commissioner, Damien Cantwell AM. - Nick Fuller

Bakery

L’épi Group sharing French artisan fare with Canberra

Ignace Diompy ensures every tasty baked good created at L’épi Artisan Bakery Group is made from scratch.

Owner of L’épi Artisan Bakery Group, Ignace Diompy, took over Crust Artisan Bakery at Fyshwick Markets two years ago. Since then, he launched the L’épi French Artisan Bakery brand, firstly at Chisholm Village Shopping Centre 12 months ago, and recently at Kambah Village Shopping Centre last month. Born in France, Ignace came to Australia in 2018 working as a baker locally, before making the brave jump into business ownership in 2021.

H

ow did you get started in the bakery business, and what inspired you to open your own bakery?

I started when I was 16 years old. I was fascinated about being a pastry chef first, but I wasn’t the best student and a few challenges emerged, so I ended up being a baker. I began to discover how I enjoyed the bakery side more, and so I started my apprenticeship at a place in France. What inspired me to open my own bakery is my

passion for my job, as well as my interest in business. I am someone not really interested in fitting into the normal systems so it was pretty evident to me early on that I would be starting my own bakery someday. However, the main reason why I wanted to start my own bakery is because I want to create something on my own that is for the greater good. I dream one day – I dream a lot! – to make a difference in the bakery world. For me, it’s not about having the brand name everywhere; it’s about bringing a fully sustainable

product to the community. I have a dream to have a farm that grows all the ingredients in our products sustainably, to produce our milk, our meats and other ingredients ourselves in a way that is both ethical and sustainable. So, this dream of having a positive impact on the environment, to bring quality products to the community, is what has inspired me to open these bakeries.

Tell us about how you have grown since your journey began.

Oh, a lot! I have had more growth in the last two years compared to the previous six years. Although it has been really challenging, I think overall it is really positive growth. I have had many, many challenges; for example, during the first month of taking over the Hume bakery (now our manufacturing HQ), we went through many machines breaking down, all at the same time. I do think we went a bit too quick … the experience itself as a business owner was not too great, but what we managed to do in the business has had a greater positive impact on the overall business, because it has rapidly increased our learnings and knowledge. Right now, we are feeling more confident than ever, basically because of all the challenging stages that we went through.

Customers can choose from delicious sweet treats, authentic French-style baguettes, and 13 varieties of sourdough bread, the bakery’s most popular product.

Since taking over Crust Artisan Bakery at Fyshwick Markets in 2021, Ignace Diompy has expanded L’épi Artisan Bakery Group to bakery cafés in Chisholm and Kambah.

What do you find most rewarding about running a bakery?

The most rewarding aspect of running a bakery is customer happiness. This is what it’s all about – customer happiness. Because we make a certain kind of bread that not everyone makes. And because the preparation steps and techniques we use are quite extensive, we don’t take any shortcuts. For us, it’s all about the passion going into our products, and because we’re passionate about the product, when you hear someone talking about your bakery and your products in a good way and sharing those views to others, I don’t see anything that can beat that, with regards to feeling rewarded.

What are some of the most popular items your customers always come back for?

Oh, I would say our bread, particularly our wide sourdough range. We have 13 sourdough flavours to choose from, some customers just stick to one flavour they always come back for, other customers love coming back and going through our long menu of breads and trying the variety. Our baguettes as

L’épi Artisan Bakery Group brings authentic French artisan style to the bakery scene in Canberra.

well we are really well known for, as they really represent us and the authentic French artisan style we bring to the bakery scene in Canberra.

What is your favourite thing about working in a bakery? It’s the process of having raw ingredients and mixing and creating those ingredients into a finished product for others to enjoy.

How often are you looking to innovate and create new goodies for customers? We innovate and create new goodies monthly. You will see in each of our bakeries a monthly special. For Christmas we have two specials coming up – a beautiful range of Christmas biscuits and a Christmas log. We find our customers love having new goodies to try in our cafés each month.

What makes the L’épi Bakery Group different? The focus on the product. We are using the best quality flour that you can find locally and we are not trying to save and to cut costs on the quality of the

ingredients. Also, our baking processes are really long, they are actually the longest processes you can use in the bakery, so even though this costs us more, the quality is evident in our products. We are constantly learning from our customers, listening to what they love, and improving and getting better every time in our journey and so that will always help to shape our quality products. In what ways do you engage with the local

community?

We have a vision for our bakeries to be spaces that impact the local communities they are in. We value family and so local families are at the focus of our bakeries. How can we create convenience and quality products that our communities love. We also have a plan to be giving back to our local communities over the next 12 months, as we settle into our new locations in Chisholm and Kambah, so we look forward to seeing those relationships grow in the new year. New OzHarvest Canberra van needed to ease food insecurity Demand for food assistance in Canberra has never been higher, OzHarvest Canberra city manager Bin Barnier says. But the recent acquisition of their third van improves the charity’s capacity to rescue and deliver more food, more reliably. OzHarvest Canberra rescues more than 10,000 kg of food and delivers nearly 22,000 meals every week, supporting 70 not-for-profit agencies. Every kilogram of food equates to two meals, and all the food is supplied, collected, and handed onto individuals at no charge, Ms Barnier said. In the 12 months to the end of October, the charity collected 518,000 kg of food, or more than a million meals – which Ms Barnier said was unheard of, but not sustainable for her team of five. “So we’ve pushed it till we could, financially and with results, justify another van,” she said. “With only two vans on the road, it was always a very stressful situation. Because if we had a truck off the road … I was always worried that if we couldn’t deliver, someone was going to go hungry.”

By changing rosters and working hard, OzHarvest reduced missed shifts from six a month to only three. Over the last two-and-a-half years, they have increased donations and deliveries from 27 to 43 times a month – or 43 tonnes a month. “But that puts a lot of strain on the drivers because of the weight and the volume,” Ms Barnier said. “For us, it’s not just about volume… We want to deliver the best quality food and the best mix.” OzHarvest already works with 104 donors, including major supermarkets. The third van will allow them to take on more donors, such as national institutions. That excess food will be needed: 46 per cent of the charities OzHarvest supports can’t meet demand; 31 per cent of people seeking assistance are doing so for the very first time; and demand increased by 73 per cent in May. “We’ve got people with two incomes, with young families, trying to get to work and pay childcare at the same time, and they are coming for the very first

time for food assistance to all the charities that we support,” Ms Barnier said. Ms Barnier recommends that people in need visit Ask Izzy, a website that connects people in crisis with services they require. Many ACT agencies also run food co-ops and pantries; VolunteeringACT has a list online. Ms Barnier also urges the public to help if they can. Some locals have made heartening contributions to food rescue efforts, she said. “Financial donations are absolutely necessary, and as little as $1 will help pay for two meals,” she said. “Maybe don’t buy that extra present for under the Christmas tree, but go straight to our website: www.ozharvest.org.” All donations remain local. But financial donations aren’t the only way to support OzHarvest. Recycling pickup service ReCollect will take cans, bottles, cartons, juice boxes and poppers to the ACT Container Deposit Scheme; the 10-cent refund collected from recycling these containers will be donated to OzHarvest. You can also donate 10c bottles and cans at the purple recycle bins at Waves Car Wash sites across the ACT. Full story online. - Nick Fuller

HelpingACT brightens Christmas for families in need Five years ago, HelpingACT only needed to donate 80 Christmas hampers – but as Canberra families struggle with the cost of living, the food relief charity hopes to pack 225 hampers for people in need this year. Already, demand for food assistance has doubled this year, and without help, many will have a gloomy festive season, unable to put food on the table or afford Christmas dinner. HelpingACT’s founder and chair, Mohammed Ali, the 2022 Canberra Citizen of the Year, implores the public to be generous and aid them. Ginninderry has donated $3,000, but HelpingACT needs to raise another $4,000 by Wednesday 6 December. “This is the time for all Canberra to come together,” Mr Ali said. “This is not only to save the dignity and respect for all living in Canberra under stress. We are an affluent city, and we have to maintain that beauty of the city as much as possible. I’m sure that we can do it.”

16

30 November 2023

HelpingACT will donate the hampers to homeless people via the Early Morning Centre; to refugees and asylum seeker families through Companion House; to culturally diverse families in need through Uniting Church at Kippax; through vulnerable families on HelpingACT’s own list; and to other struggling families. The charity will pack the hampers at the Link – Ginninderry Community & Information Centre on Saturday 9 December. COVID-19 was a turning point in the lives of many families who were doing okay, Mr Ali said. Before the pandemic, they were not affluent, but could make ends meet. However, the cost of goods and bank interest rates increased. Now, many organisations and street organisations find that they are helping more families than they had expected or planned for earlier in the year. Mr Ali believes the federal government must reassess welfare payments, to raise them above

the poverty line. He also urges the government to help struggling families at this time. “Because after spending whatever they have on this Christmas season, they might find themselves in a completely dark corner in terms of how to run the show day by day,” he said. The public can help by donating through HelpingACT’s website: www.helpingact.org/ donate. Organisations can also bring longlife food to HelpingACT’s Food Bank at the Theo Notaras Multicultural Centre, 180 London Circuit, Civic, on Saturday morning. Celebration of at Orana Spring Fair ith the deep blue sky and the warm spring sun reminding everyone that summer is just around the corner, Orana Steiner School celebrated its annual Spring Fair on Sunday 19 November. The Spring Fair is a major event on Orana’s calendar each year and it is a special time where both the school and local communities come together to celebrate the hope that Spring brings, the connection with the natural world around us, experience the joy of creativity, and find value in connection with each other. Held on the beautiful Orana campus in Weston, the Spring Fair gave everyone who attended the opportunity to enjoy a multitude of stalls run by class groups that ranged from handmade natural items such as toys, clothes, soaps, pottery and candles, to the book shop, silent auction, plant stall, and many delicious foods and treats.

Children explored their creativity with various thoughtful and natural craft activities and tested their grip strength on the rock-climbing wall. There were performances by students and community members as well as local performers and musicians, including string ensembles and jazz solos, drum workshops, folk dancing sessions and puppet shows. Accompanied by the school band, the maypole dance was performed by Class 4 which demonstrated their ability to remember complex physical routines and movements to create intricate patterns, all to the beat of the music. The highlight of the Spring Fair was seeing the school and local community members coming together to celebrate and enjoy the occasion. While Orana’s primary purpose is to educate and inspire students to achieve their best work, work creatively, and become aware of themselves as individuals who will contribute positively to global social change, the sense of

community and involvement from parents and carers is invaluable in helping them reach their full potential in their journey through life and as a positive functioning member of society. Festivals are a vital part of any Steiner school community, where people of all walks of life come together to celebrate the changing of the seasons and connect to the world around us. In our modern and often busy daily lives, these festivals help us to press pause on the hustle and bustle of our usual days and weeks. They allow us to take time to create a deliberate anchor point in the cycle of the year to strengthen each child’s connection to the world, their community, and their own place in it. It also provides an avenue of anticipation as they look forward to these festivals and get excited about the part they play within them. Orana would like to thank their wonderful P&F, and all those who put in a huge effort to help organise and run the fair leading up to and on the day. They would also like to thank all the businesses, individuals and families who donated items toward the stalls and silent auction for their contribution to the Spring Fair. Julian Leeser suggests path for ALP to reclaim inner-city seats First, congratulations to Dave Sharma on winning the NSW Liberal Senate preselection. He is a quality person, and should make an excellent addition to our national parliament. Scary Christmas present from Federal energy minister Chris Bowen MP for committing squillions of taxpayers’ money (actual amount to be determined) for almost certainly destructive (to the environment), useless renewable infrastructure that will do more damage than good, and flies in the face of most other countries’ increasing commitment to a nuclear power future. [Ed.: The Federal Government last week announced it would expand the Capacity Investment Scheme to generate 32 gigawatts of clean and renewable electricity nationally; fossil fuels would not be eligible.] Interesting article by prominent Liberal ‘Yes’ campaigner Julian Leeser MP last Friday (24 November) in The Australian. Julian has been my mate since 2008. It wasn’t until his swearing into the federal parliament in 2016 that I learnt he was Jewish. Julian gave a recent

speech urging the major parties to put the Greens last in future elections due to their racist anti-Semitic stance. In The Australian, he wrote: “The Greens’ behaviour online and in parliament since 7 October 2023 [the Hamas incursion into Israel] on these matters has been nothing less than disgraceful.” He went on to say: “But anti-Semitism is now a full blown feature of the extremist-Greens political ideology. It represents a danger to Jewish Australians and all Australians who value freedom. It’s why I believe the major parties of Australia must preference the Greens last.” I agree wholeheartedly with him. Racism must be squashed, and anti-Semitism is the oldest form of racism. Since 2010, I have always put the Greens last, as I believe their policies are usually incredibly dangerous to the harmony and prosperity of this country. It has never ceased to amaze me how stupid the Coalition has been in preferencing the Greens above Labor. Labor also has no reason to pander to the

Greens, as the Greens hate the Coalition and will always put Labor in front of them, come what may. Labor is in a win-win situation. Julian is right in pointing out that now voters have a moral imperative to put the Greens last due to their anti-Semitism. I would suggest Dutton and Albanese in 2025 preference each other in front of the Greens. Liberals/Nats should put the Greens last, and the ALP should always preference the Libs/Nats in front of the Greens. There is no way the Greens will put the Coalition in front of Labor, so the ALP loses nothing. Indeed, it stands to gain back a few innercity seats. The Libs/Nats need to run candidates in all federal House of Reps seats – especially the inner-city seats, which probably only vote 15 per cent Liberal. That 15 per cent may well, due to preferences, see a good old ALP candidate elected and beat the Greens. It is a way of squeezing the Greens out of the House of Reps – a good thing for Australia in my view, as it strikes a blow, not only against anti-Semitism, but against policies ruinous to Australia. Bill Stefaniak is founder of the Belco Party, and former Leader of the Canberra Liberals.

opinion Response from leader of the ACT Greens, Shane Rattenbury The ACT and Australian Greens completely reject, and have always completely rejected, antisemitism. It is one of the most dangerous forms of hate in our community. As with all forms of racism, we recognise that it is not enough to simply not be antisemitic, but rather we must be anti-racist and active allies of the Jewish community. In doing so, we must acknowledge that antisemitism can take numerous forms, involving numerous tropes around the Jewish community. One such trope is associating the Jewish people with the State of Israel, its actions and its government. This is of course, is wrong and antisemitic. In reality, many members of the Jewish community, including in our own party, are strong activists against the State of Israel’s subjugation of the

Palestinian people. We in the Greens are proud to stand with such activists in calling for a ceasefire in Gaza and PalestineIsrael more broadly, to save the lives of Palestinians and Jews alike. We are equally proud to stand with activists in calling for an end to the State of Israel’s perpetuation of the crime of Apartheid against Palestinians, and its occupation of Palestinian territories. I completely reject any suggestion that the Greens support Hamas and its war crimes. We unequivocally condemn the atrocities committed on October 7. We will continue to work hard to make the Canberra community welcoming for those in the Jewish community who chose to call this city home. canberradaily.com.au

Social Bean ‘missing puzzle piece’ for Daydream Machine The Social Bean Café & Emporium, a new social venture opening at the Belconnen Community Centre this week, is the “missing puzzle piece” for the Daydream Machine, an award-winning creative studio for neurodivergent youth, founder (and 2022 ACT Local Hero of the Year) Luke Ferguson says. The Daydream Machine is one of 20 local businesses and artisans that will sell their wares at the Social Bean, described by Heidi Prowse OAM, executive manager of Capital Region Community Services, which runs the Centre, as “more than a café: it’s a community-centric hub committed to building connections,

20

supporting local artisans, and promoting sustainability.” Mr Ferguson’s students make designer jewellery (Greens MLA Emma Davidson can often be seen wearing their PacMan or mushroom earrings), T-shirts, greeting cards, digital art, calendars, sculptures, mugs and more. Some of the artists are only eight, but are already being paid commissions. So far, the students’ artworks have been sold at expos at their studio, or art shows at the Belconnen Community Centre earlier this year. Mr Ferguson has spent this year trying to work out how to showcase some of the kids’

work outside those shows. He had toyed with the idea of setting up a shopfront at the studio in Fyshwick – but someone would have to staff it over the weekend. “Setting up [the shopfront] at the Social Bean Café and Emporium is great,” Mr Ferguson said. “It’s perfect for us. In this way, we can direct people all year round to the Emporium, which is really exciting.” Other organisations featured include SiTara’s Story, a charity supporting Bangladeshi women, and Darkies Design, an independent clothing label, founded by Dion Devow, 2018 ACT Australian of the Year. The Daydream Machine put dibs on the front window space. It has a massive blank wall that will display a lot of the students’ art, while each youngster will have a cubbyhole where they can set up their own merchandise. “We’re encouraging them to explore [their passion] and run with it and see how far we can take it,” Mr Ferguson said. “We’re providing an opportunity for them to make some money out of doing what they love. The money is just a bonus in some way. It’s giving the students a way to express their talents and showcase it to the wider community. You can just see the self-belief and confidence growing in all of the

students. It’s great!” Capital Region Community Services will take sales from the Daydream Machine and other stalls, and charge what Ms Prowse called an “incredibly low” 15 per cent commission on all the artworks sold. All proceeds will be used to run events, workshops and activities. “It’s a really fair arrangement,” Mr Ferguson said. “Our kids keep the profits from the sale … It’s a good incentive. And it means we don’t have to man the stores ourselves.” Although some students are keen to pop in on weekends, restock their items, and spruik their wares. Many of the Daydream Machine kids will reinvest their money into home studios, so they can continue to pursue their art. The Social Bean will also host repair and recycle activities, such as turning old clothes into new items. The Social Bean will open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. Ms Prowse hopes volunteers will help to keep it open on weekends. She has put out a call for volunteers “who would like to help us with this incredible social venture that’s supporting the community.” Social Bean Café & Emporium, 23 Swanson Court, Belconnen. - Nick Fuller canberradaily.com.au

to the editor Organise the peace Our media in all its forms has been consumed with distressing and confronting coverage and commentary of conflicts and war, civil or international, which seem to have no end, particularly in Gaza at present. We are distressed and moved but feel helpless to make any meaningful contribution to the plight of those suffering unimaginable atrocity and suffering, and, as a result, can easily become complacent. Mindful of all the current conflicts around the world, not only in Gaza, we must remember all those affected by war, particularly the innocent civilians. At times like these, I am reminded of the timeless wisdom of Aristotle: ‘It is not enough to win a war; it is more important to organise the peace’. - Angela Kueter-Luks, Bruce

Double standards Interestingly, a lot of the letter writers in the local lefty newspaper that were hanging LNP staffer Bruce Lehrmann without a guilty verdict and an innocent man were non-existent in expressing

their guilty-until-proven innocent verdict on the local Greens accused Jonathan Davis. Seems like double standards always apply to the left. - Ian Pilsner, Weston

Rewritten history Mike Alves’ claim that Israel is a cancer echoes terrorist groups like Hamas and their Iranian sponsor (CW 16 November). No wonder he felt the need to rewrite Israel’s early history. The Palestinian Mandate was established by the League of Nations after World War I specifically to establish a Jewish national home. It was previously part of the Turkish Ottoman Empire, not the “Palestinian nation”. Following World War II, the UN partitioned what was left of the Mandate after Britain carved off Jordan between Jews and Arabs, giving areas where Jews were in the majority in Israel. The Jews were not happy with the plan, but agreed, but the Arabs in the Mandate and every surrounding country launched a war of genocidal intent, aiming to kill or

expel all Jews. Roughly 700,000 Arabs left Israel as a result of this war they started, some forced out by fighting, but most left in fear or to get out of the way. Those who stayed became Israeli citizens. To resolve the conflict, Hamas, which will never accept a Jewish state, must be uprooted, and the Palestinian Authority must negotiate in good faith about the next Israeli offer of statehood. It has refused three previous offers though they met international expectations. - Alan Shroot, Forrest

Multi-faceted approach needed Re: Bill Stefaniak’s comment on the hospitals in the ACT (CW 23 November), he and the rest of the community have a right to be appalled. Addressing concerns about declining standards in healthcare institutions such as Canberra and [North Canberra] Hospitals involves a multi-faceted approach that often requires collaboration between the government, healthcare professionals, and the community. Encourage open and transparent communication between the government, healthcare providers, and the public, thus helping in understanding the specific issues. Independent review of the hospitals to assess the quality of care, identify areas of improvement, and ensure compliance with healthcare standards, including sufficient funding and staffing to improve equipment and overall quality of services, which includes investment in training and professional development of healthcare staff to ensure they are up to date with the latest medical practices and standards. Collaborate with healthcare professionals and their associations to address concerns, implement evidence-based practices, and

improve overall patient care. Engage with the local community to gather feedback on their experiences with healthcare services. Hold the government accountable for the standards of healthcare delivery, and ensure that there is political will to address the issues and implement necessary changes. Public advocacy, community involvement, and ongoing monitoring are crucial components of achieving lasting positive change. - Errol Good, Macgregor

Plenty to worry about

In the Down to Business article ‘Plea to to be polite to frontline workers’ (CW 23 November), Greg Hartford appeals to clients and customers of Canberra businesses to be calm, patent and polite to business staff: a perfectly reasonable request. He also notes “The (rudeness) situation seems to have got a lot worse after the COVID-19 lockdowns”. I am inclined to agree. In my view, there may well be another factor at work here: people worrying, albeit many of them subconsciously, about climate change. This would most likely be the case with younger people and parents with young children. These folk understand that if climate change is as bad as climate scientists insist it is, young adults and children will feel the full force of increasingly frequent and severe extreme weather events and climate catastrophes. From the business point of view, many business premises will become very expensive to insure or be uninsurable, especially close to a low-lying coast, because of sea-level rise and costal erosion; or on or near a floodplain, due to more frequent and severe floods. The possible (some would say likely) consequences of climate change provide plenty to worry about. – Douglas Mackenzie, Deakin

SAGITTARIUS NOV 23 – DEC 21

GEMINI MAY 22 – JUN 21

You’ll find an improvement at home uplifting, such as better interpersonal dynamics or even a more stable sense of belonging. You’ll also enjoy a get-together or a trip that brings you in touch with favourite people. Just avoid overspending.

You’ll enjoy spending time with like-minded people. It’s a lovely week to make changes at home, and you may also receive visitors or good news from afar. If a battle of wills arises, diplomacy and tact will defuse the situation.

CAPRICORN DEC 22 – JAN 20

CANCER JUN 22 – JUL 22

You’ll appreciate and enjoy a sociable week and paperwork and logistics will gain your attention too. You have the chance to improve your career, your finances or status, so be sure to take the initiative. Avoid taking others’ issues personally.

A change in your usual routine, either due to work or due to a change of environment will be uplifting. Be sure to consider travel and collaborations in this light. However, some relationships will require a gentle touch to avoid arguments.

AQUARIUS JAN 21 – FEB 19

LEO JUL 23 – AUG 23

A favourite activity such as travel or sports will be replenishing, as long as you avoid allowing a health or work issue to gain your focus and disturb your peace of mind. You’ll find a financial or social development enriching.

This is a great week to advance both personal and financial matters, as your efforts are likely to succeed. You’ll gain the help or co-operation of someone you rely on financially. Stay on top of a changing scenario to avoid disappointment.

PISCES FEB 20 – MAR 20

VIRGO AUG 24 – SEPT 23

You’ll appreciate the sense that issues that have been stuck begin to move forward in your personal or work life, with developments this week providing insight into the best way forward to create more stability for yourself, especially in relationships.

A strong work ethic will produce positive results. This is also a good week to see progress both financially and in your personal life. Make time for the activities and people you love. But you must avoid a battle of wills.

ARIES MAR 21 – APR 20

LIBRA SEPT 24 – OCT 23

Developments will remind you that life rarely hands you a gold platter, but that hard work and application are nevertheless rewarded. If you encounter a stand-off, friends, organisations and your communication skills will help you to break through.

Venus in your sign makes a harmonious aspect with stabilising Saturn, bringing the chance to attain a happy situation or a secure phase in your personal life. However, you must approach a difference of opinion carefully to avoid an impasse.

TAURUS APR 21 – MAY 21

SCORPIO OCT 24 – NOV 22

This is a good week to make changes in your daily schedule to create more contentment in your life. However, you may need to consider logistics more than usual. So be sure to plan ahead, especially regarding travel, study and/or legal matters.

You’ll enjoy the sense that the festive season has begun with socialising, music and get-togethers a real drawcard. A reunion or a return to an old haunt will be enticing, but you must plan ahead and avoid needless arguments.

Classic pavlova with lemon curd Cooking 80 mins | Serves 8 Pavlova 6 egg whites (210g), at room temperature 330g (1 1/2 cups) caster sugar 1 1/2 tsp white vinegar Lemon curd 2 egg yolks 75g (1/3 cup) caster sugar 2 tsp finely grated lemon rind 80ml (1/3 cup) lemon juice 80g unsalted butter, chopped 4 kiwi fruit sliced 35g (¼ cup) slivered pistachios

pavlova

Pavlova Preheat oven to 150°C fan forced. Mark a 23cm circle onto a sheet of baking paper. Turn baking paper over and place onto an upturned large greased baking tray (this makes it easier for sliding pavlova off tray once cooked). Place egg whites in the bowl of an electric mixture. Whisk on high speed until stiff peaks.

Gradually add sugar a tablespoon at a time, making sure sugar is dissolved between each addition. Once sugar is added, scrape down sides of bowl if needed. Whisk for a further 6 minutes, or until mixture is thick and glossy. Add vinegar and whisk for further 2 minutes. Spoon meringue onto paper. Use a pallet knife to shape the meringue into peaks. Place in oven, reduce oven temperature to 120°C fan forced and bake for 1 hour or until dry. Turn off oven and allow pavlova to cool completely. Meanwhile, make the lemon curd. Lemon Curd Place yolks, sugar, lemon rind and juice in a small bowl and whisk to combine. Place in a small saucepan with butter. Place over medium heat, bring to a simmer, stirring constantly. When it comes to the boil, take off heat and strain through a fine sieve. Refrigerate until cold. Place pavlova on serving plate, top with lemon curd, kiwifruit and sprinkle with pistachio. Tip: When passionfruit is in season, drizzle with the pulp of 3 passionfruit.

Nothing says summer in Australia like a homemade pavlova topped with fresh fruits of the season. Recipes and images courtesy of Australian Eggs.

Pavlova layer cake with berries Cooking 40 mins | Serves 10 4 large egg whites 1 cup caster sugar 1 Tbsp cornflour 2 tsp white vinegar 1 kiwi fruit, peeled and sliced thinly and halved 1 x 250g punnet strawberries, hulled and quartered 2 x 120g punnet raspberries 350ml cream

Gradually add sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, until sugar dissolves and the mixture is thick and glossy. Add the cornflour and vinegar and whisk for another 2 minutes. Divide mixture evenly between trays and spread with the back of a spoon until an even thickness. Bake 40 minutes, swapping trays half way, until crisp and dry. Turn heat off and leave meringue in oven with door ajar for 1 hour or until completely cooled. Combine berries and mix well.

Small mint leaves to garnish

Beat cream with electric beaters to firm peaks.

Preheat oven 150˚C and line 2 baking trays with baking tray. Draw two 25cm – diameter circle on each piece of baking paper.

Place one of the meringue discs onto serving plate and spread with a third of the cream. Scatter over a third of the berries and place remaining meringue on top. Spoon remaining cream and pile on berries and kiwi fruit.

time out Canberra composer releases album for mental health Just over a year after successfully reaching his Kickstarter goal, Canberra composer Matthew J Webster is set to release his crowdfunded album, This Too Shall Pass, today, Thursday 30 November. More than 180 people supported Mr Webster’s Kickstarter to raise funds for a live orchestra to record the album. Through his music, the self-taught composer shares his journey with severe medication-resistant bipolar disorder, and his first treatment and recovery through electroconvulsive therapy in 2019. While he originally released the album in 2019 with the use of

48

digital composing software, Mr Webster always dreamed of recording with an orchestra. Throughout the pandemic lockdowns, he took to social media, increasing his presence and gaining traction. His open and honest dialogue through his music around mental health and various treatments hit a chord with people around the world. The encouraging support from followers gave him the confidence to proceed with the Kickstarter, which raised over $20,000. “I feel so blessed and honoured that people trusted me and wanted to help me with my dream. It has

definitely helped me keep going with life, especially on really bad depression days,” says Mr Webster. “Knowing I matter to people and help them, it’s almost like a sense of responsibility to these people, and I absolutely do not want to let

them down.” Each track was rewritten with changes to the orchestration and new tracks composed, and was then recorded by an orchestra in Europe. The process of mixing and mastering each individual track was

canberradaily.com.au

bigger than anyone involved had expected. “Each track had around 46 individual microphones covering the whole orchestra and individual instrument spot mics. Then we have however many takes it took to record an individual piece and splicing all the mics and tracks together to form one continuous take.” Ensuring balance across the instruments was kept and highlighted as required were two mixing engineers based in the USA. Mr Webster says the engineers have worked on and with orchestras and in film studios in LA and Hollywood. The process took longer than he initially anticipated. Working with multiple files and time zones while still undergoing electroconvulsive therapy presented challenges at times. However, he says the finished work was worth the wait. Feeling a mixture of excited and terrified, Mr Webster says the work is a musical expression of his soul, his intense struggles with bipolar, and his overall existence. “It is a terrifying thought that people won’t connect with that, or they won’t like it and that is a normal part of any art – not everyone will like

everything.” In the lead-up to the album’s release, Mr Webster has been drawing on therapy techniques to calm his brain and to remind himself his worth is more than what he creates and people’s responses to that art. “It’s kind of funny that I am struggling with that currently when such a large part of my mental health awareness platform is trying to remind people they are not their illness, they have value to bring the world just by existing.” Helping to balance the terrified moments is the excitement of achieving something a younger version of himself would have never thought he could, which gives him a wonderful and warm feeling. “I have had a dream since I started composing at 15/16 years old to one day record a whole album with a live orchestra and here we are now!” he smiles. The composer has committed to donating 20 per cent of proceeds from album sales to charity, with hopes to increase the amount over time. The first charity he has decided to support is Bravehearts Foundation, an Australian

not-for-profit dedicated to the prevention of child sexual abuse and to support for survivors. “As a survivor myself, I know the damage it can cause and it is something I want to fight to eradicate in the world and support anyone who has gone through it themselves,” Mr Webster says. Hoping that music lovers who have experienced mental health concerns and those who haven’t will be drawn to the tracks, the main thing he wants people to feel when listening to his music is how valued they truly are. “I want people to listen to the album, whether they have mental illness or not, and really realise and feel how important they are as humans, and that even if life can be brutally hard, they are not alone or unloved.” This Too Shall Pass is available on all streaming services and for purchase on iTunes from 30 November. As the weekend continues, a desperate killer will strike again and everyone in the house is a suspect. This is an intense and enjoyable novel from Heath, who takes his striking plot and turns it into something special with clever and disturbing twists. Soon running out of money, the pair take up an employment agency’s offer to work as bartenders at the very remote outback mining town pub, The Royal Hotel. Based on the 2016 documentary Hotel Coolgardie, this modern-day Wake in Fright similarly has a sense of dread throughout. Hanna and Liv unwittingly place themselves into real harm’s way, having put their naïve trust into an employment agency, the pub’s owner Billy (Hugo Weaving), and an expected level of common decency amongst the pub’s ‘colourful’ clientele. The outgoing free-spirited English publicans set an example of what may happen to our two working backpackers after a few weeks in the remote location, run by, and for, ‘blow-ins’, whose time canberradaily.com.au

Copeland Theatre,ANU there can be easily written off as a consequence-free lost month or so. Whereas Liv takes it all in as a cultural experience with the suggestion that she is escaping similar horrors from her home of origin, Hanna has a harder time accepting the casual sexism, misogyny and consistent microaggressions from the range of males who frequent the club, and the acceptance by the females. Beautifully filmed in an abandoned pub in remote South Australia, the hotel is a perverse bastion for the town’s populace who seek companionship. Hanna and Liv serve as a match to a powder keg long left brewing. Sunny Daze Hydrating SPF 50+ Face Fluid Drops, $24.95, Chemist Warehouse, bondisands.com.au

When they say hydrating, they mean it! The liquid drops leave your skin smooth and nourished. This is one I’ll be looking to restock asap.

It’s About Time We Met this naturally brilliant oil Combining science and nature, Aussie skincare brand About Time We Met was inspired by the healing power of sandalwood when launching their range. One of their star products, the Naturally Brilliant Oil, promises to lock in moisture and boost elasticity. With antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties, the hero ingredient, sandalwood oil, is combined with hibiscus oil in hopes of smoothing fine lines and wrinkles. Packaged with a glass dropper that allows you to control the placement of the recommended 2-4 drops, the oil slides across the skin smoothly. The smell of sandalwood is strong but not unpleasant, especially before bed as it helps put you at ease and ready for a good night’s sleep while the product is busy working to restore your skin.

It’s About Time We Met’s Naturally Brilliant Oil 30ml, $115.

The oil injects moisture into your skin’, leaving you with a healthy glow. After using the product for two weeks, while I didn’t notice an improvement in fine lines and wrinkles, I did notice an improvement in skin texture and elasticity, and my skin looked fresh and with an added bounce. WITH NADINE FROM JOURNEY HOME INTERIORS

Tips to get your guest room ready It may be too late to completely redecorate your guest room with curtains and furniture in time for Christmas, but there are several must-do things you can do to make your guest rooms ready for holiday visitors. Firstly, If you have used your guest room to store things, then clear it out, ensuring that you have emptied cupboards and drawers for your guests to fit. If you’ve ever stayed at relatives, we both know it’s not a holiday but it’s pretty miserable to squeeze into a room filled with junk, boxes and bikes, etc. From experience, I can tell you that even if you do make an effort, guests who may not be as house proud as you will unfortunately still live out of their suitcase and spread out onto the floor. I suggest a luggage rack or trunk for your

guest’s cases, particularly if you have older guests, to save them bending. In fact, I have a girlfriend who tells her guests staying more than one night to unpack and make themselves at home. It’s so much tidier and more pleasant .

Guest room checklist

Here is my essentials checklist for your guest room to make guests feel at home and save you time when you want to be concentrating on Christmas entertaining: • Fresh sheets and towels • Blankets, doonas – sometimes guests from interstate will feel cold in cool Canberra summers • Tissue box – Canberra is notorious for hay fever! • Waste paper bin • Wi-Fi password

• Power point or board for

charging phones • Coasters, trays, placements to protect your furniture. For a more luxurious experience, treat your guests with: • Scented candle • Hand cream • Tourist guide • Choice of pillows • Water glasses and jug • A tray of those cosmetic samples you never seem to use • Dressing gowns, robes and slippers – especially if you have a ‘no shoes in the house’ policy.

In the bathroom

To support your bathroom’s functionality during times of extra guests, add a free-standing towel rack in or near the bathroom or in your guest’s room. Design tip: When designing bathrooms, don’t skimp on towel rails, whilst knobs are a subtle way to include guest hanging,. Also be sure to tell your guests which towels to use and where their hanging spot is, it will make them feel comfortable knowing you have thought of their needs and save them from second guessing where to put things. It will help keep your bathroom neat and avoid wet towels being left on beds or furniture. Empty a bathroom vanity drawer or two to make space your guests’ toiletry bags. bathrooms. Have you ever been in a bathroom and wondered where to put your rubbish? Women, I am sure you get what I am talking about here! Ensure toilet paper, cotton wool balls, ear buds, tissues are ready and easy to access. Show guests where to help themselves to spare loo paper and other bathroom supplies. Decorating essentials when designing your guest room: • A bed with a half decent mattress will last for 15 years in a guest room • Easy to use window treatments for both block-out and privacy • Bedside tables (clear of clutter) • Chair or stool • Mirror • Chest or console, space permitting • Hangers and space for clothes • Luggage rack or stool • Lamps and lighting canberradaily.com.au

Enduring charm & modern comfort Ainslie 12 Officer Crescent Embodying the perfect blend of historic elegance and modern comfort, all the beautiful features of the original Tocumwal cottage at 12 Officer Crescent have been retained in the Gina Carmody designed extension. According to agents, Stephen Bunday and Brenden Mowat, this charming home “is character filled yet offers an abundance of modern amenity. There’s absolutely nothing more to do.” Offering two separate living areas, a segregated main suite, expansive rear deck for entertaining and spacious kitchen, this beautifully renovated and extended residence is the perfect family home. “Your family will grow with this home and enjoy many years to come,” the agents say. “This family home boasts all the typical character and charm that Ainslie buyers love. It started its life as a Tocumwal cottage and has retained many of its unique features, including high battened ceilings, canberradaily.com.au

picture rails and timber windows. “Beyond that, it has been meticulously extended and renovated to now include four bedrooms, two living areas and an array of modern amenities. Our absolute favourite feature is the huge main suite fitted with walk-in-robe, expansive ensuite and a separate study space.” When it comes to location, Stephen and Brenden agree that Ainslie is a vibrant and desirable Inner North suburb. “With close proximity to Mt Ainslie Nature Reserve, offering bush walking and mountain bike riding, yet so close to the Canberra CBD, you have the best of both worlds here. 12 Officer Crescent is only a three-minute drive to the local shops where you will find a family friendly IGA (with unbelievable cheese section), Edgar’s Inn, bakery, café and so much more.”
