Canberra boy competes in “Formula One” of go karting
Canberra region’s young go kart champion will race for an Italian team this year.
Lazarus Añonuevo will compete on the international stage with Gold Kart International and Righetti Ridolfi, as well as the TreDkart Racing Team.
He will compete in Italy in June and July, then again in October and November, all while completing the school year in between.
Lazarus said he was excited to return to Italy to race, “learn from the best”, visit Museum Ferrari Maranello (again), and make new friends.
He trains every day on and off the track.
“I do endurance and agility training and step workouts, I go for walks, I ride my bicycle and use a simulator,” Lazarus said.
Each day the 10-year-old is on the track he drives 150 to 200 laps.
In 2024, Lazarus became a two-time State
Champion in the KNSW League (ACT and NSW) and the recipient of the prestigious Australian Karting Championship Most Improved Cadet of the Year Award.
He has amassed more than 50 trophies, accolades and awards since taking up the motorsport.
His father Al said the upcoming season in Italy was the world series of go karting.
“it’s like the Formula One (F1) of the karting world,” he said.
“The best of the best competes there. Italy is where the heart of racing in Europe is.
“What’s cool is that F1 driver’s children are actually competing in the same class.
“And the people that are current F1 drivers have raced on the tracks that Lazarus is racing on.”
Al said while the family had discussed Lazarus’ future in go karting, they did not expect to be in this position so early.
“We didn’t think we would have this discussion until he was 12 or 13,” he said.
“A lot of people probably don’t take this up until they are maybe 14 or 15.
“But when someone goes, ‘hey look’, we see potential in your son’, we’ll try and work with him and do something.”
Al said it was hard to say no.
“We spent many nights talking about it. I spoke to my friends that I trust or who I would call my brothers and mentors and all of them are saying ‘it’s not a question, you have to give it a go, it would be crazy not to’.”

World’s best descend on Belco Skate Park
Belco on the map.
Belco’s Bottle-O does three months of trade in one day, takeaways along Emu Bank put on extra staff and local hotels book out when Belco Bowl Jam is on, as hundreds of international/ interstate pro skateboarders roll up.
If you haven’t heard of Belco Bowl Jam (“jam” is a freestyle skating event where skateboarders perform tricks), that’s because organisers don’t seek media attention due to it already being at capacity.
This entirely volunteer-run event flies under the radar here, but internationally, it gets millions of views on YouTube and TikTok and attracts pro skaters from the US and Europeeven Australian Olympic gold medallist Arisa Trew.
Not only is Belco Bowl Jam internationally famous, it’s also Australia’s oldest skateboarding event (est. 2001) and it’s put
Brenden Wood (Woody), vice president of the Canberra Skateboarding Association, said that when he’s overseas, people know “Belco”.
“I’ll go overseas sometimes to skateboard in other parts of the world and I tell people that I’m from Canberra but they don’t know where it is,” Woody said. “But if I say I’m from Belco, where the Belco Bowl Jam happens, straight away skateboarders will know that spot.”
A handful of five volunteers organise this non-profit event in their spare time and what started out as a barbecue at Belco Skate Park 25 years ago, with about 30 local skaters, has morphed into a global skateboarding stage.
“There was a while there where the event was getting so big in skateboarding circles, so many people would come but there’s so little space,” Woody said. “We were worried about the capacity of the space to hold any more people if we went on the radio and told half of
Canberra about it.”
When crowd numbers reached around 500, organisers had to build scaffolding grandstands thanks to an ACT Government grant.
Despite the growing scale and worldwide reputation of Belco Bowl Jam, Woody said it would never become commercial.
“It’s never really been in the spirit of Belco Bowl Jam for anyone to make money off it,” Woody said. “We put all of the money that the sponsors provide into running the event itself and prize money for the skaters.”
Belco Bowl Jam runs from 14-16 February and is on Facebook and Instagram. A documentary on 20 years of Belco Bowl Jam is on YouTube.

Government needs to properly consult on Hawker car park development
Last week, a petition signed by over 500 local residents to save the Hawker Shops car park from being destroyed by a large new Woolworths development, through a direct sale from the ACT government to the company, was presented to newly elected Ginninderra Member Chaika Barry. Also present was the other Liberal member for Ginninderra, Peter Cain, who is also chair of the Planning
Committee, where the petition should now go for further examination. The petition was organised by the Belco Party and the Friends of the Hawker Shops. Local resident and car park supporter Vicki Hill, Belco Party convenor Angela Lount, and committee member Alan Tutt were also present.
Later that day, Ms Barry and Mr Cain released an excellent video highlighting the need for a proper inquiry before the government proceeded with the direct sale. Local radio also picked up the story.
The problem was, as is often the case with this government, a lack of consultation and an attempt to present the local community with a fait accompli.
For the life of me, I don’t know why this government always tries to
ram planning proposals through the Assembly without proper consultation.
“There was what some residents, like Vicki Hill, described as a sham consultation, which most residents didn’t even know about. It asked simplistic and leading questions such as, ‘Do you want a better supermarket?’
The Hawker Shopping Centre currently has a village feel about it. It’s divided up into four or more di erent buildings that all complement each other in an open, roomy, natural environment. There is also a large car park on the Springvale Drive (Weetangera) side, allowing people to park with their trailers and enabling elderly residents to park within 20 to 30 metres of the current supermarket.
The proposed redevelopment would take over that large car park
between the shops and Springvale Drive, with two of the hubs set to be bulldozed and replaced by a two-storey Woolworths spanning over 9,000 square metres. The development would extend from near Belconnen Way to the current southern boundary of the shopping centre near the Shell service station.
At the very least, the Planning Committee, to which this petition must now be sent, should conduct a full consultation before any proposed sale by the government takes place.
I would imagine that with a full and proper consultation and examination, any flaws in the proposal could be addressed. This could still allow for the redevelopment of the shops without destroying the amenity of the area.
I also see the new Treasurer informing us that we are now over a million dollars further in debt this year than last year. Helpful advice to Chris Steele, defer stage 2B of the tram to Woden for 15 years and that might help alleviate your problem.

A Canberra musician is taking on the world’s biggest song contest - Eurovision (the very same one that launched ABBA) – but he’s not representing Australia, Chris Endrey is playing for the tiny Republic of San Marino.
The reason being, the cost of living forced Chris to migrate to Hungary and whilst in Europe, he attended a Eurovision songwriting camp in Norway and discovered that San Marino (a microstate in Italy with just 33,419 people) welcomes any nation to represent them at Eurovision.
Chris is Canberra bornand-bred (the old Woden Valley Hospital no-less) and coincidentally, used to host “Canbeurovision”, a fun suburb-
based song competition that was so successful it went from a small gig at Smith’s Alternative to a soldout show at the Canberra Theatre.
Fast forward to 2025, Chris is about to catch a six-hour bus from Hungary to Slovenia and then a five-and-a-half-hour drive to San Marino for the Eurovision audition this Friday, 14 February, using money from a GoFundMe page supported largely by Canberrans.
He’s not taking on the behemoth song contest alone though. At the Eurovision songwriting camp, Chris met Slovenian Neli and a Norwegian Tina and together they are “Farmacy”.
Let me preface the next sentence by saying that Eurovision is known for its

eccentricity (grandma bands to stage-crashing gorillas). Eurovision songs can be bizarre (Norway’s Give That Wolf a Banana in 2022) and Eurovision costumes are outrageous (Montenegro’s cyborg costumes in 2013).
Bearing that in mind, Chris is entering the song Baed, a rap song featuring a cow bell, performed as a ram (yes you read that right).
“Our song is really ridiculous, so it’s a lot of fun,” Chris said from Budapest. “I do a rap as a ram. It’s a dance banger and we’re all sheep and we’re sort of lamenting the loss of community.
“It’s funny, when we wrote it, I wasn’t anticipating ever having to perform it. It’s actually the only rap I’ve ever written.”
Raising sheep awareness is not unusual by Eurovision standards. Neither are sheep costumes.
“I’m going for a lot of skin and fur,” Chris said. “But I still haven’t nailed it down, which is cutting it a
bit fi ne.”
Chris is in with a real chance because last year’s Eurovision winner (Switzerland’s Nemo) also completed the same Eurovision song-writing camp as Chris.
“I’m in the semi-finals for San Marino and if we win that, we are guaranteed to represent San Marino at Eurovision,” Chris said. “There were some 1,500 entrants and now it’s down to about 100. Even a 1% chance of being at Eurovision in Switzerland is really good.”
This weekend, Chris and his band will audition at a theatre in San Marino where it will be televised locally.
“Just to be able to go to San Marino already is an absurdly fun thing to do,” Chris said. “To go to this tiny micro-state and compete in a theatre on their TV with a bunch of other artists from around the world is already a ridiculous story to tell. I’m just happy to follow the thread and see how far it goes.”
Migrating from Canberra to
Budapest to beat the cost of living crisis may seem like an extreme move but Chris said it was necessary.
“I can’t really a ord to live in Australia and to have a family, so we moved somewhere cheaper. Budapest is beautiful,” Chris said. “Being a performer is not a high wage thing unless you’re extremely successful, which I didn’t mind. I never really minded being poor but it got to the point that I couldn’t even a ord to have a baseline existence anymore
because it’s so expensive. I wanted to build a family. It’s been really great to be able to do that.”
Chris has been living in Budapest with his partner for two years and now has two toddlers.
“I really miss pre-season training at ANU for Aussie rules oddly enough,” Chris said. “That’s on now.”

Netflix movie being filmed near Canberra
LILLIAN ALTMAN
A touch of Hollywood is in town with the filming of a new Netflix movie.
Featuring Australia’s own Eric Bana, South African actress Charlize Theron and Welsh actor Taron Egerton, Apex, is being filmed in NSW, including at Ginninderra Falls in Wallaroo and Bowning near Yass.
Further afield in the state, shooting is also taking place in the Blue Mountains and Sydney.
More than 460 local jobs were created, with the filming set to contribute an estimated $56.5 million in expenditure to NSW’s economy, a Netflix statement said.
The major international production stars Theron (who featured in Mad Max: Fury Road, Monster ), Egerton (Carry-On, Kingsman: The Secret Service, Rocketman) and iconic Australian
actor Bana (The Castle, The Dry ).
The film, which is directed by Baltasar Kormákur, centres on a grieving woman who seeks solace in the wilderness, only to find herself ensnared in a deadly game of cat and mouse with a serial killer.
Kormákur said: “For a film like Apex — where the elements and the terrain are characters that loom just as large as the movie stars battling in it — no other country in the world could have taken the place of Australia as our primary location”.
“The unrivaled landscape, studio facilities, and talented crews in New South Wales have been a boon to this production. I want to thank the people of NSW, the NSW Government, and The Australian Government’s Location Offset for all the support we’ve received in making this journey possible,” he said.
The film is set to impact the NSW

‘Huge success’: multicultural showcase of colour, culture
LILLIAN ALTMAN
Canberrans and visitors packed out Civic for the ACT’s biggest showcase of cultures from around the world.
The National Multicultural Festival ran in Civic and at Glebe Park from 7-9 February.
An ACT spokesperson said the festival included more than 280 stalls, including about 140 community food, beverage and information stalls, 67 diplomatic information stalls and 76 commercial food, beverage, cultural items stalls.
The spokesperson said there were more than 200 performances, including community, volunteer and professional artist groups, across the three days
“The 27th National Multicultural Festival was another huge success, bringing together more than 170 cultures for a joyous weekend of celebrations,” the spokesperson said.
“We’re extremely grateful to all the community groups, stallholders, performers and volunteers who
brought the festival to life.”
The spokesperson said while the official visitation figures were not yet available, Canberrans “once again turned out in force to enjoy the feast of the senses that is the Multicultural Festival”.
“Because we expanded further into Glebe Park, it also didn’t feel as crowded, and people had more space and shade to enjoy the festivities,” they said.
“The intense storm on Friday evening did result in the cancellation of some scheduled performances to ensure the safety of attendees, performers and stakeholders, but the weather over the rest of the weekend allowed the festival to continue full swing.”
The spokesperson said a highlight of the festival was the parade, which ran on the Saturday afternoon.
“Crowds lined the entire parade route to see the fantastic representation of cultures and music,” they said.
“The headline act, Thelma Plum, performed on Sunday afternoon and was exceptional, with
thousands of people enjoying her musical talents and captivating performance.”
I made my way to the festival on the Saturday afternoon, with the highlights being the different foods I tried across lunch and dinner - Egyptian shawarma, Italian cannoli, vegetarian Bhutanese Momo dumplings, and fried plantain (banana), and the parade.
For the parade, I made sure to find a prime spot on the route early – near Glebe Park - to ensure I got the best view.
The line up of the cultures on show was impressive and full of colour – from twirling skirts to Chinese dragons, traditional wear, dances and music, and even some Italian flag throwing!

ARIES (MARCH 21-APRIL 19)
This week you’re picking up on a distinction between what feels like kindness and what doesn’t. You know what it’s like to be met with warmth and care, and when that’s missing. It doesn’t make you overly sensitive; it means you have a radar for emotional safety, and it’s working just fine.
TAURUS (APRIL 20-MAY 20)
Sometimes you get caught up in trying to define or understand someone else’s behavior. But at the end of the day, what matters most is how it feels to you. If it’s disruptive or doesn’t nourish you, that’s all you need to know to decide about the role that person should have in your life.
GEMINI (MAY 21-JUNE 21)
BRAIN BUSTERS
1 The 1957 painting, Bride Running Away, is a well-known work by which Australian artist?
2 Guyana is bordered by which three countries?
3 Who directed the 2023 biographical movie, Air?
4 Which word represents the letter, M, in the NATO phonetic alphabet?
5 In relation to nautical units of measure, how many cables are in one nautical mile?
Conflict isn’t a comfortable space for you – a reflection of your values and the kinds of relationships you cultivate, where harmony, mutual respect and kindness take precedence. You deserve relationships that feel uplifting, where your joy can shine without interference.
CANCER (JUNE 22-JULY 22)
A relationship will teach you something valuable about boundaries, patterns and your own strength. Those are lessons that will serve you well. Your selfawareness, your humor and your kindness come through strongly, even in the moments when you doubt yourself.
LEO (JULY 23-AUG. 22)
Keep reminding yourself that you’re more than one connection with one person. You’re someone with so much to offer – depth, warmth, wit, creativity – and there will be people who match that energy and give back in ways that are nourishing. You deserve that kind of love and friendship.
VIRGO (AUG. 23-SEPT. 22)
It takes strength to choose what’s right for your heart over what it’s yearning for in the moment. It’s OK to miss people, to feel the pull of wanting to reach out. But it’s also OK – and probably really good – to step away. You’ll see that this dynamic wasn’t good for you, which is brave.
LIBRA (SEPT. 23-OCT. 23)
Relationships are complex and sometimes imbalanced, but it doesn’t stop you from showing up as your authentic self, even when your needs and vulnerabilities aren’t met in return. Your feelings aren’t wrong. They show how open you are to people who intrigue and inspire you.
SCORPIO (OCT. 24-NOV. 21)
You’re a force that can sweep people off their feet with your brilliance and drive. You’re still trying to untangle some feelings. You admire someone deeply for the energy they bring. That connection means something profound to you, and you’ll find the perfect way to show it.
SAGITTARIUS (NOV. 22-DEC. 21)
There’s so much beauty and strength in what you share with the world. Someone will be proud of you, and this makes you more proud of yourself. You’ll express something incredibly beautiful and wise. You’ll embrace your ability to love in this unconditional, expansive way.
CAPRICORN (DEC. 22-JAN. 19)
Your love isn’t contingent on another person’s response. Being OK with the fact that things won’t always go the way you want but still showing up for yourself and others is a strength that will always serve you. You’re not defined by things that don’t align perfectly. Keep going, love deeply.
AQUARIUS (JAN. 20-FEB. 18)
The future is full of possibilities for you, and your efforts will pay off without a doubt. You’ll be around people, you’ll see them, and you’ll help them see themselves in a new light. You’re already doing it by being present and honest with yourself, and by allowing your heart to keep leading you.
PISCES (FEB. 19-MARCH 20)
You sometimes doubt if you have enough of what it takes to create something remarkable. The fact is, you’re already doing it. You’re gathering talented collaborators, pouring yourself into your work and taking risks. You have a creative touchstone you can come back to.

Town population doubles for award-winning festival
LILLIAN ALTMAN
The population of Googong is set to double when its annual awardwinning music festival rolls into town.
The next Googfest, a free live music event of “Googonian proportions”, will run at Rockley Oval on 15 February from 5-9pm.
The headline act is pop sensation Samantha Jade, with Matthew Charles Band and Last Call as the support acts.
Googong is located on the NSW and ACT border, 16 kilometres southeast of Canberra.
Mirvac Group, in partnership with Peet Limited, first developed Googong Township in 2012, with the
set will see him DJ, sing and rap, while he will be accompanied by a full band on stage for the second set.
Last Call will play filthy blues and soul.
Googong Township community development manager Sam Remmers said it was exciting to have Samantha Jade - whose music has amassed more than 81 million streams - as the headliner.
“We haven’t done pop in a little while so I’m excited to see how the audience responds to a pop icon,” she said.
“She’s a pocket rocket and good live so I think it’s a nice change.”
Ms Remmers said the 2024 festival brings between six to eight thousand
was 8,000 in November 2024, so it doubles,” she said.
“The main purpose of this event really is for Googonians to have the opportunity to invite their family and friends from the region.
“We’ve seen interstate people come too.
“The purpose is to see the community of Googong and showcase Googong, because it really is a special place.”
Ms Remmers said while there would be food trucks on site, attendees were welcome to bring their own food.
Googfest was named Queanbeyan-Palerang Region Community Event of the Year at the recent Australia Day Awards for its 2024 festival
“It’s absolutely awesome,” Ms Remmers said.
“I think that is recognition for the wonderful community we’ve created at Googong, and recognition for Googonians.
“This is a very proud moment for the community.
“It was created for the township to bring people in.”

Wings Above the Mallee by Léonie Kelsall

Fans of rural romance will enjoy Wings Above the Mallee, the latest tale by bestselling author Léonie Kelsall. Set once more in the small rural town of Settlers Bridge, it is an emotionally charged story about loss and second chances. Bush pilot Amelia Fraser finds herself in outback South Australia running from her past and locking away her emotions. A chance encounter with reclusive widower Heath Brennan, and his difficult teenage daughter, opens up opportunities for both, but any possible relationship seems to be too fraught with drama and guilt. A moving and poignant tale of loss, love and redemption.
That Island Feeling by Karina May
Macmillan, $36.99
Sparkling with sun, sand and romance is Karina May’s That Island Feeling. This marvellous mismatched couple romance throws perpetual planner and worrier, Andie Alcott, together with barefoot oyster farmer Jack Cooper on the idyllic Pearl Island where he lives. Worried about her recently divorced girlfriend, and her ailing father back on the mainland, Andie is in no mood for romance, especially when the girl’s holiday she has booked is thrown into chaos. Fortunately, Jack, beset by his own problems, is reluctantly on hand to help. An enjoyable, warm-hearted story, That Island Feeling makes for a wonderful late summer weekend read.
The Jam Maker by Mary-Lou Stephens HQ, $32.99
Mary-Lou Stephens once more mixes history, family drama and romance in her latest novel, The Jam Maker. Set initially in Tasmania in the 1870s, it follows the life of Harriet Brown who started work in the local jam factory at the age of twelve, disguised as a boy, before striking out on her own. Along the way Harriet is forced to resort to deception and dangerous decisions in order to succeed in life and love. The Jam Maker is a fascinating story that is propelled by richly developed characters, and filled with interesting, and now forgotten, details about the growth of Tasmania’s fledging jam industry. Recommended.

Canberra institution’s history comes to life in digital form
LILLIAN ALTMAN
Half a century ago, concerts were recorded on tape at a tertiary institution in Canberra.
Now, one of the former students at the Canberra College of Advanced Education (now the University of Canberra) has painstakingly digitised the recordings.
Pete McMahon was part of the Poetry, Song and Lies Club, which later evolved into the Culture and the Anarchy Green Society, which performed locally and toured interstate.
Some of these recordings will be played live at the Western Room Canberra Irish Club at 5pm on Saturday 22 February.
“I am going to play the recording like a DJ and I’m going to give a presentation and a talk of what each meant/an introduction to each track,” McMahon told CW
“It’s a historical document for anyone that’s got any interest in those years.
“We knew (former leader of the Australian Labor Party) Tom Uren and quite a few lefty politicians at the time.
“All sorts of things happened. My girlfriend blew cannabis into the face of (Member of Parliament) John Gorton as he unveiled a stone at the college.”
McMahon said most of the recordings were original songs or poems that were performed in front of a live audience.
“To me, it’s a snapshot, like an audible documentary,” he said.
McMahon said the folk club was political, into demonstrating and protesting, anti-Vietnam War, and against nuclear power and weapons.
“We were very committed to pedal power (push bikes) – we were going to change the world.
He said the club was around in the mid-1970s.
“Right through the protest concerts against (former governor-general) John Kerr,” McMahon said.
“It was very much a city culture in that we
were very interested in the American beatnik poets like Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and Jack Kerouac.
“Someone would get up and recite a poem while someone else would play the bongos.”
McMahon said they thought the recordings were “nothing at the time”.
“I’ve spent eight years digitising them at my home studio,” he said.
“I was involved in at least 80 of these concerts.” McMahon said in total there were 18 hours of tape, with the digitisation of them not yet completed. If anyone has any photographs from the club days, or would be willing to take over the project, contact Pete McMahon on 0414 319 588.

Take 3 with iconic Australian actor John Waters
LILLIAN ALTMAN
Just six months after appearing in The Woman in Black in Canberra, John Waters is making a return with a venture of a different kind.
The British-born Australian actor will appear in Radio Luxembourg at The Street Theatre from 28 February to 1 March. Purchase tickets at thestreet.org.au/shows/ john-waters-radio-luxembourg
The show celebrates the songs of the British Pop Invasion that changed the world of modern music forever.
Waters listened to Radio Luxembourg growing up because at the time, radio licenses were not available in the United Kingdom.
1
What is your favourite song from the era covered in the show and why?
Waters laughed and said who’s your favourite child? It’s difficult. Some particularly illicit a great reaction – there’s a song that was popular in Australia and the United Kingdom - which I’m glad to hear was popular in Australia, which is Chris Farlowe’s Out of Time. I look out and I see everyone singing the words, and I think ‘I hope I don’t get any words wrong’.
I lost my brother in June last year so He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother, resonates for me. I get to that and it’s my Candle in the Wind moment, I have to try and get through it, but it’s good therapy.
2
What memories of being brought up in London until you were 20 does taking part in this show bring up?
It’s doing what I wished I could have done in my mid to late teens. I saw Farlowe singing Out of Time and I thought ‘Wouldn’t it be great to be him?’ I get to be him at a much later stage in my life. The thing about performing music live is that it’s really a transporting thing for me and the audience. When I start playing a song, that song, the rest of the band and the audience are the only things that exist in that time. It takes you another place and that’s what I always think it should do.
3
You are involved in many things from theatre to plays, film and television and playing music. What’s your favourite thing to do?
I do wear several hats in my career
in the entertainment industry – I started in music, then moved into film and television acting. It’s a terrific experience to do that. I did some work early and continued on. If I can get a bit of this and that through the year I’m happy. But it doesn’t always happen, I have to take whatever I can.

Milking Demo Milking Barn
Aussie Mango Pancake Skewers with Nutella
12 serves | 30 mins
Ingredients
For the Pancakes:
2/3 cup Plain Flour
Pinch of Salt
1 Large Egg
1 1/4 cups of Milk
Olive Oil Spray
To serve:
15g (1 tablespoon) Nutella per skewer
1 Australian Mango, chopped into 2cm cubes
Method
In a bowl, sift the flour and a pinch of salt. Create a well in the centre with the back of a spoon, and then break in the egg and pour in half the milk. Whisk together, gradually adding the flour to make a smooth thick batter. Mix thoroughly to remove any lumps, and then stir in the rest of the milk.
Spray a little oil over a medium frying pan. Pour about 2 tablespoons of batter into the pan, moving and tilting the pan as you pour until the batter thinly coats the base. Cook over moderate heat until golden brown on the underside, for approximately 30 seconds to 1 minute. Flip the pancake over with a spatula and cook the other side until it is golden brown. Slide the pancake out of the pan onto a plate. Heat little more oil and cook the remaining pancakes one at a time in the same way. Keep in a warm oven until ready to serve.
Spread a thin layer of Nutella® over the pancake and roll tightly. Cut the pancake into 3cm pieces and place onto a bamboo skewer followed by a square of the mango. Repeat this process until the skewer is full, and then serve immediately to your crowd!
Tasty tip!
If Aussie mangoes aren’t in season, these skewers are just as delicious with bananas, cut into rounds, or any of your favourite fruits.

How to recognise and deal with a manipulator
CO N T R IBU
VIVIENNE LEWIS ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AND CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST AT UNIVERSITY OF CANBERRA
Manipulation is when someone uses sneaky or unfair tactics to influence or control you, often for their own benefit. It’s a way of twisting situations, emotions, or facts to make you feel guilty, confused, or obligated to do what they want. It can occur in relationships, by family members and in the workplace. It has a detrimental
e ect on your confidence, your self-esteem and mental health. We often don’t realise we are being manipulated so recognising manipulative behaviour is key to protecting your mental health and having healthy relationships.
Here are some common signs that someone might be trying to manipulate you.
They say one thing but do another. A manipulative person might promise to respect your boundaries but then repeatedly ignore them. They make you doubt yourself (Gaslighting). They might deny things they said or make you feel like you’re “imagining things” to mess with your confidence.
Weekly Half Page - 213mm W x 125mm H.pdf 1 31/01/2025 8:38:22 am
They always play the victim. They’ll twist situations to make themselves
look helpless, saying things like, ‘No one ever helps me,’ so you feel guilty and step in.
They use your emotions against you. They might say things like, ‘If you really cared, you’d do this for me,’ to guilt or pressure you into doing what they want. They give you the silent treatment. They stop talking to you or withhold a ection to punish or control you. They’re overly charming. They might pile on compliments and flattery to win you over but use it later to get you to do something for them.
They involve others to try and control you (Triangulation). They might say things like, ‘Everyone agrees you’re overreacting,’ to make you feel isolated or insecure. What you can do
Firstly, trust your gut. If something feels o or you’re always second-guessing yourself after interacting with someone, trust those feelings. Also, pay attention to patterns and notice if their behaviour
& wellbeing
happens repeatedly or if they often make you feel bad or unsure.
Set boundaries with the person and be clear about what you’re okay with, like saying, ‘I can’t help you with this right now’ and stick to your limits. Getting a second opinion by talking to a friend or family member about their experience of the person or talk to a psychologist to get an objective perspective.
Try to stay calm and focus on facts when you are dealing with the person Instead of reacting emotionally. Point out the truth calmly, like, ‘You said you’d do this, but it didn’t happen. Can we talk about why?’
Sometimes you must distance yourself from the person. If they don’t stop manipulating you, consider limiting your time with them or cutting ties to protect yourself.
If you or someone you know is experiencing manipulation in a domestic violence context, help is available. 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732).
Benefits of publishing pill testing data outweigh risks
RACHAEL WARD, AAP
The results of pill testing trials and data behind drug warnings must be made public so more people can avoid highly dangerous substances.
That’s the verdict from a study into how the benefits of drug checking overseas can be rolled out in Australia as more states as territories adopt or trial the service.
“There are people who use drugs in the community that would never attend a drug checking service and (participants) wanted to make sure that everyone who could possibly be helped by this information could access it,” study author Monica Barratt said.
The Victorian-focused research data could also be used by the state’s emergency departments and health workers looking for real-time information on local drug markets or even used for policy and advocacy, the drug policy expert said.
Some 41 drug users and experts in the field took part in the RMIT research, which determined the benefits of making results available outweighed the risks.
Pill testing is legal in Queensland and the ACT, while Victoria launched a trial this summer and NSW is about to embark on a $1 million 12-month trial.
Australian governments and drug checking services share high-risk findings through drug alerts, however most study participants wanted full public disclosure.
They thought Australia should follow the lead of the United States, Canada, Italy, Switzerland, New Zealand and Germany, where results are de-identified and made public through interactive dashboards or searchable websites.
But how law enforcement could use the data emerged as an issue, with fears it could lead to greater policing or stigmatise areas of heavy drug use.

“There was some concern that having complete public access might be problematic, but there was also recognition that police can potentially be engaged in harm reduction,” Ms Barratt said.
About 600 drug samples were tested by The Loop Australia at Beyond the Valley Festival, where Victoria’s trial started.
The organisation said almost 40 per cent of those who used the service intended to take a smaller amount of drugs afterwards.
“That’s what harm reduction looks like in action,” chief executive Cameron Francis said.
Summary results from the trial were released to the public days later, with further information to be released later.

Gender bias in healthcare guidelines is failing women
MAEVE BANNISTER, AAP
Australian women are being let down by a lack of consideration for gender and sex in healthcare guidelines, leading to entrenched gender inequities at the highest levels of the health system.
From medical emergencies such as heart attacks and stroke to mental health care, gender and sex bias is leading to poorer health outcomes for women and gender-diverse people, including delayed diagnosis and treatment.
A report by Monash University took a deep dive into Australia’s clinical practice guidelines and assessed the standard of sex and gender awareness being reflected in advice given to healthcare practitioners.
Of the 80 clinical practice guidelines reviewed across 27 different areas of practice, 15 per cent made no reference to ‘sex’ or ‘gender’.
More than 40 per cent used the terms sex and
gender incorrectly and more than half did not include consideration of gender in clinical practice.
Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care Ged Kearney said gender discrimination needed to be tackled at every level of the health system.
“As a former nurse I know just how important clinical guidelines are,” she said.
“This report shows us current guidelines are letting Australian women down (and) it’s not good enough.”
The report made several recommendations, including introducing a minimum requirement to report where there is a lack of sex or gender-specific evidence.
It also recommended increasing the participation of women and gender diverse people in guideline development panels.
“Compounding the sex and gender-based discrimination we see at the point of care is a deeper bias in health and medical research, where historically the male body has been the focus of

investigation,” lead author Maggie Kirkman said. Dr Kirkman said she was optimistic that gender equity in clinical guidelines would be achieved in the future.
“Setting standards for clinical guidelines to address gender inequity has the potential to spark a transformative shift in practice, and mandatorily reporting gaps in sex and gender-related evidence will serve to target and prioritise future research,” she said.
“This is an easy game-changer for women and gender-diverse people.”
The National Health and Medical Research Council said it was working to ensure clinical guidelines reflected best practice for all Australians.
Women often have poorer health outcomes due to gender bias in clinical guidelines, a report shows.
