Brenda Colbourne, founder of ACT Cat Rescue and Rehoming, with kittens rescued from the streets. Photo: Kerrie Brewer.
Should you feed Canberra’s street cats? If a hungry-looking stray cat is hanging around, you might feel like you are being kind by offering it a meal – but are you doing the best thing for that cat? Canberra cat welfare enthusiasts believe that perhaps the kind thing isn’t always best when it comes to hungry cats. Back in March, Brenda Colbourne, founder of ACT Cat Rescue and Rehoming, offered to help someone who had been feeding a pregnant homeless cat. Shortly after the pair started the process of setting up a routine, the original person wanted to be less involved, only occasionally feeding. “You can’t keep feeding when you’re not taking responsibility for the outcome that cat’s kittens will get. They’re not easy to domesticate after the age of 12-13 weeks,” says Ms Colbourne. Over the next six months, she managed to catch all but one kitten (which is being cared for by a local family) and the mother. “Once I make a commitment, I will follow through on that commitment, I don’t just abandon it, sometimes working on your own is a lot easier… I kept going, when I had traps set, I might go two or three times [a night],” says 6

Ms Colbourne. Unfortunately, the mother was already pregnant again, as was one of the kittens. Both needed rehabilitation to be handled, something Ms Colbourne was able to achieve before either gave birth. Mother cat went into labour one morning delivering one kitten normally before it was apparent something was wrong; a kitten was stuck. Ms Colbourne, a retired nurse with midwifery experience, could tell all was not right and rushed her in for an emergency caesarean. Luckily mum and four kittens all made it. When the kitten went into labour, she was unable to proceed with a natural delivery and had to be rushed for a caesarean as well, where four kittens were delivered. Due to complications, the mother didn’t survive, and in her absence, two kittens died in the first few days. Ms Colbourne says it is rare for a mother and kitten to both require emergency intervention, let alone weeks apart. She says if she hadn’t been there to fulfil her duty of care to the animals, 10 cats would have died without any care afforded to them. Doing what she can with the resources she
has, Ms Colbourne is a self-funded one-woman show. She catches cats on private land and either drops them off to RSPCA ACT or takes them back to her house to be cared for ahead of finding a forever home. Wanting to see all cats in homes, she says getting them off the streets is the best outcome for everyone. “It prevents a lot of diseases being spread that can cause cats to die; it prevents dog attacks on cats in which they then get killed; it also prevents car accidents where they get killed; it’s cleaner for the environment because the excrement is contained, and you have a cat that lives longer.” Ms Colbourne fears that this year’s kitten season will be one of the worst and without dedicated people like her, the future for many of these colony cats looks bleak. If a cat without a home has a regular food source, i.e., you, they will likely stay in the area. If that cat and others around have not been neutered or spayed, they are likely to multiply and form what is known as a colony. “The father of the kittens might mate with the kittens or the brothers might mate with the sister or the mother and you then get inbreeding which results in the most horrific health issues,” says Ms Colbourne. “It is possible for a single cat to produce three to four litters during one kitten season. With a litter usually being four to six kittens, a single cat may have up to 24 kittens per year,” says Michelle Robertson, CEO of RSPCA ACT. According to Ms Robertson, there are significant causes for concern when it comes to the welfare of cats living in colonies. These include health issues, injuries, infections and diseases due to fights amongst cats, lack of preventive measures for fleas, zoonotic diseases like ringworm and other infections like cat flu. Colony cats in some instances can also predate on wildlife and pets like birds. “Another big concern is cats being struck by motor vehicles and sustaining injuries that leave them suffering, and if untreated, leads to a painful death,” she says. Both Ms Colbourne and Ms Robertson say that RSPCA ACT is the best place to bring a stray. If that isn’t possible or you suspect the cat might have an owner, they suggest taking it to a local vet where they can check for a microchip. EXPERIENCE DRONE SKYSHOW & NIGHT MARKETS 200m wide eagle, brought to life by 600 drones, will soar above Lake Burley Griffin in a first-of-its-kind spectacle during FLIGHT: Drone SkyShow & Night Markets on 25-27 January. The choreographed visual experience showcases the latest in technology as the drones create mesmerising displays across the iconic backdrop of Lake Burley Griffin, blending art, technology and nature to tell stories capturing the soul of Australia. Presented by the National Capital Authority (NCA), assisted by the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council, and crafted by AGB Creative, this free event invites locals and interstate visitors to a family-friendly celebration of community. To help attendees make the most out of their experience, the NCA is encouraging people to plan ahead, particularly when it comes to getting to and from the event. Here are our top tips for navigating this extraordinary nighttime event.
trilogy of shows light up the skies above Lake Burley Griffin telling stories of Australia’s unique, natural beauty and history. Visitors are advised to arrive early and stay for all three shows to ensure they experience the whole spectacle.

Soundtrack broadcast
Accompanying the drones is a unique soundtrack created especially for the event with narration and composed music. The soundtrack will be broadcast from Commonwealth Place for all those close. Anyone who plans to join from an alternate location is encouraged to bring their own small portable speaker or headphones. The soundtrack can be accessed by scanning QR codes posted around the lake.
Pick your location

Griffin, you can choose the experience that is right for you. If right in the middle of the action is where you want to be, set your course for the main hub at Commonwealth Place where you will have access to the Night Markets, live entertainment and delicious food vendor offerings. A secondary event hub will operate from Regatta Point, complete with a smaller number of food vendors. If a relaxing evening is more your speed, you can pack a picnic and join from an alternate location like Kings Park and tune into the soundtrack.
Plan your trip there and back!
There’s nothing worse than missing the fun because you’re stuck in traffic or driving around trying to find a park. Fortunately, the NCA has thought ahead to take the pressure off. Public transport is king when it comes to this event with some great options available to get you to the action and back home again. Organisers strongly suggest catching a Transport Canberra bus to Langton Crescent and Regatta Point which are just a short stroll away from the event space. If you don’t want to travel the whole way on public transport, take advantage of one of the many park-and-ride facilities across Canberra. You can
park your car for free and then hop on public transport the rest of the way. More details are available at the Transport Canberra website. For those who choose to drive, parking in the area is limited, so consider parking further away and leaving ample time to make it to and from the event on foot. Questacon car park will be closed to the general public and reserved for cars displaying a valid Disabled Parking Permit. You can also make your way to the event on an e-scooter. While Commonwealth Place is a no-ride zone, there will be designated parking throughout the area thanks to Beam and Neuron. Download the Beam and Neuron apps now from the App Store or Google Play Store.
Night Markets
As if a first-of-its-kind immersive SkyShow experience wasn’t enough entertainment for one night, there will be live performances, giftware, and food and drinks galore thanks to the Night Markets. Hosted by the people who bring us The Little Burley and Haig Park Markets each week, the evening event presents more than 80 stores each night. Whether you’re after dinner or a tasty treat, the Night Markets are
offering a smorgasbord of options from street food to delectable desserts – there’s something for every taste bud. The multicultural stalls share the flavours of Italy, Malaysia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Jordan, Japan and more. The desserts range from indulgent chocolate-coated strawberries and cannoli to fun glow-in-the-dark fairy floss, toffee apples and everything in between. Unwind with a sip in the Drinks Garden with local distilleries, wineries and breweries offering their concoctions. Local Canberra musicians will be serenading the crowd with a mixture of original and cover tracks, while the roving Samba dancers are sure to be a showstopper. Capturing the magic of the beloved Little Burley Markets craft corner, the set-up will be open on the evenings, along with
face painters and a magician stopping in. An event celebrating community isn’t complete without the chance to support our local makers. Available for purchase across the evenings will be gourmet foods including locally sourced honey, artisan salami, hot sauces and pickles. Then for the home and body, choose from candles, jewellery, ceramics, beauty products and homewares. Catch the action in FLIGHT: Drone SkyShow & Night Markets from various locations around Central Basin on 25-27 January from 5pm nightly; bit.ly/Flight-DroneSkyShow-Event

Will 2024 mark a turning point? The ACT projects itself as a pioneer in the global movement towards “Net Zero” emissions of carbon dioxide and other “greenhouse gases”. The Territory has contracted for 100 per cent wind/solar electricity (though as an integral part of the NSW region its actual supply is 70 per cent coal derived). It has been a pioneer in subsidising electric vehicles and is a “first mover” in banning direct use of natural gas; those measures that are claimed to bring lower emissions by replacing coal, oil and gas with wind and solar. The Territory’s position appears to be consistent with the communiqué issued in Dubai at the 28th annual Conference of the Parties (COP 28) of the UN Climate Change Convention. The COP 28 communiqué included what was designated a breakthrough agreement to phase out coal as a source of electricity, though only ‘in a just, orderly, and equitable manner’ But will 2024 mark a turning point? Many media outlets see recent elections as foreshadowing a wind-back of national climate commitments. The most colourful is that of new Argentinian President Javier Milei who has vowed
to cancel all emission reduction measures (as well as massively cutting the public service!). But less spectacular changes have taken place with new governments in Europe that are sceptical of a need to reduce emission – at least by switching to wind/ solar. Sweden, Finland, Greece and the Netherlands are set to join Hungary and Italy in a shift away from climate-driven policies. France and Germany have no national elections scheduled for this year. However, in Germany, the ‘far right’ AfD is likely to become more prominent in state elections and the ruling Left-Green-Free Democrats federal coalition is looking fragile - in a recent popular vote, a bare majority of the conservative Free Democrats favoured continuing with its bizarre alliance. Right of centre parties are polling at 60 per cent and the German economy is in an energy-price induced recession accompanied by extensive farmer demonstrations against the government’s policies. France has also cooled on renewables and its new energy bill avoids setting a target for them, while restoring the nation’s former emphasis on nuclear. Of course, the crucial contest is the US. If the
BY DR ALAN MORAN
November Presidential elections are a victory for Trump (or DeSantis or Ramaswamy) this will bring about a collapse of President Biden’s extensive energy subsidy policies and renewed government support for gas, which is the predominant source of electricity generation in the US. These developments would leave Canberra’s climate policies as empty vanity gestures that not only have no effect on global emissions but do not even offer a model for others to follow. So, rather than boasting about being at the tip of the spear of global energy and greenhouse emissions policy, Canberra could find itself marooned by an ebbing tide. This may lead to increased scrutiny of the price effects of the Territory’s energy policies. Canstar electricity pricing data indicates that Canberrans already pay a premium (about 18 per cent) above their Sydney counterparts. This is in spite of Sydney consumers also facing a supply loaded with the costs stemming from subsidised renewables. And existing costs will mushroom with the increased requirements to reduce coal-generated electricity supplies and the associated escalation in network charges this entails.

WITH BILL STEFANIAK AM RFD FORMER ACT OPPOSITION LEADER
Welcome to 2024 – and thanks for therapy dogs I hope you all had a great Christmas / New Year. Well done to local minister Chris Steel for backing the Canberra Racing Club on its redevelopment plans (which include housing) for a thoroughbred park in North Canberra, and thereby torpedoing the local Greens’ obsession with destroying all forms of racing in the ACT. The only additional thing you need to do now, Chris, is back the Racing Club’s desire to increase the $7.5 million p.a. ACT government subsidy given to the ACT race club from gaming revenue turnover to a figure about twice that, to match what your interstate Labor colleagues give to their racing industry. It’s at no cost to taxpayers, as it’s all from gaming taxes, and ACT racing is a big local industry employing and supporting about 500 local jobs. On the big stage, well done to Joe Biden and Rishi Sunak for striking back against the Houthi terrorists attacking shipping in the Red Sea. The Poms particularly should be congratulated, because even though they only have about six ships capable of doing the job
(shame on you, David Cameron!), they at least have deployed two to help the US – unlike Albo, who refused to deploy even one RAN ship. Well done to Tanya Plibersek for knocking back an ecologically disastrous Victorian plan to build a huge wind farm off the Victorian coast that would have caused havoc with the local environment. And — Congratulations to our very own Princess Mary of Denmark on becoming Queen of that delightful country with her Prince Charming as the new King Frederik. A wonderful true fairytale… Recently, I have been going to court a lot (no, I haven’t been a bad boy), helping my old friend, local solicitor Tony Tu’ulakitau with his court cases. For about six years or so, the ACT has been blessed with a new innovative program whereby therapy dogs are taken to places where people may be stressed and need the wonderful calming influence a dog can give. Courts are certainly places where people get stressed – defendants, witnesses, and police alike.
Unlike guide dogs and sniffer dogs, which people are not encouraged to pat, therapy dogs are there to be patted. I have two dogs: Honey, a female desexed staffy cross, and Bailey, a cavoodle. On some occasions, Bailey especially will lie on the bed with me, and on the occasions I pat him or just put my arm on him, I feel any stress leave me. It’s a wonderful, comforting feeling. I recently had an interaction in the Magistrates Court with Sundae, a lovely labrador therapy dog who delighted courtgoers. Her calming effect was great to watch. She made lots of people awaiting their hearings in court happy. Her handler told me that the therapy work is a drain on the dog, and after about 150 minutes, it was time for Sundae to go home, as the transfer of all that human stress makes her tired. I don’t know whose idea it was to introduce therapy dogs, but it’s a great initiative. A big thank you to the therapy dogs and their human handlers for doing such a wonderful job…

Call for COVID Royal Commission - with teeth A national COVID inquiry is underway, but it will not deliver the accountability that Australians deserve. This is the position of a group of leading Australian academics, medical professionals and leaders who have thrown their support behind a proposed Royal Commission to make a proper review of the national COVID response. A public declaration circulated by the Australian Medical Professionals Society (AMPS), and with over 40 signatories, lays out complete and thorough Terms of Reference (TORs) for a Royal Commission, leaving no stone unturned. The far-reaching TORs include examination of human rights issues related to vaccine mandates and lockdowns, conduct of media and nudge messaging units, informed consent, restrictions on repurposed drugs, drug safety monitoring, and a review of the epidemiological evidence and pandemic modelling referenced in government decision making. “Answers from a Royal Commission created by the Australian people – and not the public servants it is meant to investigate – is what is needed,” says lead author and former barrister Julian Gillespie, who is of the view that the COVID Inquiry, led by
an independent panel appointed by the Albanese Government, will “only serve to place a gold star on the government’s actions”. “The current Inquiry has only eight TORs that are too broad and ill-defined,” says Gillespie. “Not only that, but they get to select their own witnesses – they get to choose who they call in, and they get to choose how much detail to go into. The heads of departments will be called in and they’ll say that they did a good job.” In contrast, the 52 proposed TORs assembled by a team of lawyers, with input from decorated academics including Professor Wendy Hoy AO, Professor Philip Morris AM and Emeritus Professor Robert Clancy AM, are “very precise,” says Gillespie, leaving no wiggle room for omitting unpalatable aspects of the COVID response. Additionally, “if properly empowered, a Royal Commission will have the same powers as a court of law,” Gillespie explains. These powers include ordering discovery of internal records and compelling witnesses to attend and answer questions. AMPS Secretary, Kara Thomas, emphasises that conducting a full and thorough Royal Commission
of Australia’s COVID response is crucial to prevent “a recurrence of what Professor Jay Bhattacharya has termed ‘the greatest public health mistake in human history’”. Senator Malcolm Roberts of One Nation, who initiated calls for the Royal Commission, has slammed the Albanese Government’s COVID inquiry as “toothless,” stating, “Anything less than a COVID Royal Commission is a betrayal of everyday Australians and small business who were badly affected by our COVID response over the last three and a half years.” The proposed TORs put forward by AMPS attracted 46,609 co-signatories from the Australian public before being submitted last Friday, 12 January, to the Senate Committee inquiring into appropriate TORs for a COVID Royal Commission. The Committee will now consider all submissions before making their recommendations. The proposed Royal Commission TORs discussed in this article can be read at: https://amps.redunion. com.au/proposed-terms-of-reference-for-the-covid19-royal-commission - Rebekah Barnett

to the editor Celebrate a united Australia It would seem that the rhetoric from Mr Dutton and his supporters about Australia Day has not only caused division amongst Australians but has now resulted in the arrest of two children in custody on arson charges for their alleged attack against an Australianowned business for making a business decision. This kind of divisive, toxic, ignorant politics needs to stop and we need to have responsible leaders who can debate and discuss ideas, not spread fear, hate and division. First and foremost, Australia Day is for celebrating a united Australia not a divided one. We have gone way too far down the track of American far right politics. Let’s be proud to be Australians instead. - Doug Steley, Heyfield VIC
Unwarranted bonus for defence personnel Unsurprisingly, defence personnel have snapped up the offer of a one-off $50K government bonus payment to serve another three years. It was manna from heaven to recipients, it also begs the questions: on what basis was the bonus allocated, was it targeted to areas where it was needed the most, or was it open to all? Will the bonus be paid ‘up-front’, or will it have to be returned in case of unforeseen circumstances resulting in recipients not being able to fulfil their obligations? It would appear as though all this very expensive bonus offer will achieve is retarding the loss of some personnel, it does not improve our defence capabilities and does not warrant the expenditure of around $400 million. -Mario Stivala, Belconnen
Life on Planet Barr As 2024 dawns, a picture of Planet Barr and its clapped-out ministerial asteroids, orbiting ‘yes minister’ bureaucracies, and neoliberal gas rings. Poverty amid plenty, environmental destruction, mistrust of institutions, rampant urban spread, employment uncertainty, disaffected youth, and financial chaos. Swarming Planet Barr, 6,000 settlers a year seeking sustenance, shekels and shelter, only to crash-land on government and bureaucratic planning wastelands, packed with superseded billiondollar transport rattlers and a rainbow roundabout. Housing scarcity is pushing prices to an average of $1.1 million, units to $700,000-plus, with renters squeezed, 1,800 homeless, and up to a five-year wait for public housing. Hospitals are beset by staffing shortages and overcrowded emergency departments, with doctors and nurses suffering from burnout. Schools struggle to find and retain teachers and support staff to deal with larger class sizes and reduced individual attention. Green space is being pillaged. Public housing is proof the Labrals and Greenrals on London Circuit think social justice is a nag running in the fifth at Kembla Grange. An example. A southside Housing ACT complex, home to the elderly and disabled, resembles a garbage dump, a tree branch and bark littered fire hazard, a rodent’s playground, replete with leaking roofs, collapsed brick walls, cracked footpaths, and a sinking roadway swimming pool. Solution? Either elect independents, abolish the Legislative Assembly and return it to Federal Government advisory bodies, or create local councils, say four, two northside, two southside. Anything is better than nothing. - Bill O’Connell, Chapman
Keep the Australia Day date As Australia Day approaches, the tired old arguments about changing the date surface once again for the annual whinge fest, trying to create division rather than unity. From what I have seen, organisers of Australia Day festivities have been very good and proactive at including all cultures on this day, from Aboriginal smoking ceremonies in the morning, locals and immigrants sharing a barbie at the local park dressed in their Aussie colours playing some cricket, to the tall ships sailing on Sydney Harbour. As for changing the date, no one can agree on an alternate date; this constant bickering would be best put in to making the date we have now even better. 26 January 1788 was when all eleven ships of the First Fleet landed in what is now called Sydney Cove, changing the course of the Great Southern Land and its Indigenous people and those early settlers forever, for better or worse. What is a fact, is that the land would not have continued as it was without some form of non-Indigenous settlement or colonisation. They were very different times 230-odd years ago; no electricity or hot water, no motor cars, no big buildings or bridges, etc. Whilst the Aboriginals had been on the land for thousands of years, they had done very little as far as technology was concerned, and to think they would have continued today without any kind of intervention is absurd. If the British had not colonised the country, it would have been the French, Chinese, Portuguese, Arabs, or Indonesians; I wonder how that would have worked out? Not as good as what we have today I would say. That is why so many immigrants want to come to this great country and why we are so happy to live here, because it was built on the
basis of the Commonwealth, where we have democracy and things like free speech, unlike some countries, where you can be killed for saying the wrong thing or for being gay or for being female and not being a slave to your husband. As for labelling 26 January ‘Invasion Day’, that is just plain wrong. The original aim of Captain James Cook in 1770 was to map the Transit of Venus in the southern hemisphere and find the mysterious Great Southern Land. Any meeting with local Indigenous people was to make peace not war, these were specific orders from the British government at the time, the same given to Captain Arthur Phillip 18 years later, as well as finding suitable land for their increasing number of convicts and for further free settlers. If it was an ‘invasion’, they would have sailed into Sydney Harbour with all guns blazing, intending to kill every native they encountered. Compare this to what the Japanese did in World War II when they bombed the hell out of as much of Australia as they could, with the intent to kill as many innocent civilians as they could and then you have an invasion. Now, no one is saying that it was all perfect back in 1788 and that the British did nothing wrong to the Aboriginals … but as I said before, the world was a very different place back then and quite barbaric. We cannot change the past; we can only make now better. That is why we should keep Australia Day on 26 January and put even more effort into creating a day of unity, acceptance and mourning. The date is very significant because it signified the arrival of Australia’s first immigrants and no Aboriginals were killed on that day. In fact, many years later it was the day of Australia’s first interracial union between an Aboriginal and European person. - Ian Pilsner, Weston

Look back at Belconnen Mall as the everyday becomes art Photographic artist Spiros Coutroubas takes the viewer back to the times of the early 1990s in his exhibition Scenes from the Mall at Belconnen Arts Centre until 11 February. Throughout the 1980s and ‘90s, Mr Coutroubas could often be found snapping portraits around Canberra, capturing moments in time at places like Raiders games and in the Greek community. Although he amassed a significant portfolio, soon other priories took the wheel and the images went unexhibited. Over the past five years, the photographer has been looking through his collection and felt a pang of disappointment they hadn’t been seen. Although some have questioned why he would want to exhibit the photos three decades after they were taken, Mr Coutroubas knew it was the right time. “I just think it deserves to be seen and it would have been a shame just to sort of pass on it and have it not be seen… A lot of this stuff I have photographed for the record and for history, it’s intended to be a

record of the time.” The exhibition, featuring a collection of images taken in 1989-1990, showcases some of the faces who visited and worked at Belconnen Mall during that time. It can be broken down into three sections Portrait of a Stairwell, Shoppingtown and Lido Café. When he was capturing the images, Mr Coutroubas saw his role as that of a kind of social historian. Sometimes people would be suspicious of what the shots might be used for and he had to explain in a way that assured them he wasn’t taking advantage of them. Taking portraits at the Canberra Show in 1990, he thought of the perfect way to describe it. “I’d say to people ‘If you were at the Canberra Show and next door there was an exhibition of a whole lot of people in the Canberra Show in 1960, would you be interested in seeing that show?’ It really resonated and they would say ‘Yeah, I’d be in for that’ and I’d say “Good, you’re it today, come back in 30 years’,” he smiles.

Locals invited to take a small blessing from exhibition The smell of fresh flowers, a hug from a loved one, or a rainbow after a storm, tiny moments of joy are sprinkled throughout every day. Inviting us to take the time to appreciate those moments is the collaborative exhibition, Small Blessings, at Tuggeranong Arts Centre until 27 January. Born from frustration with her own art practice, artist and art educator Lynn Petersen knew that even though she was engaged with her pieces, she wanted to connect with the broader community. Wanting to share other voices and find meaning in the practice itself, Ms Peterson was inspired by a movement she saw ten years ago. “An artist asked people to contribute stories of where acts of kindness happened in a certain area in Sydney and then he mapped them using symbols. Also, the whole idea of how do we give to other people in a way that’s meaningful?” The exhibition space in Tuggeranong Arts Centre has been filled with love and happiness

through the works of artists and community members. The idea is simple, people share the story of a small blessing they have encountered and someone else creates a small work in response. “The only criteria is it needs to reflect an idea or an aspect of a small blessing. We’ve got glass works that have been made by students of Lake Tuggeranong College, animations that are online that a photographer friend of mine has made… We’ve got a lot of stitching on various textiles, textiles do feature quite heavily,” says Ms Petersen. Rather than return the items to the creators, Ms Petersen thought of another way to further engage the community, by gifting the exhibition. She explains any item that has been gifted for display will then be gifted to someone else, only payment required is a smile. “Even better if you take something from the gallery with someone else in mind that you

would then pass it on to, that would be lovely,” Ms Petersen says. “It is a way of getting people to reflect on small blessings and keep that thinking going past the time and space of the exhibition.” Extended version at canberradaily.com.au Small Blessings at Tuggeranong Arts Centre until 27 January; tuggeranongarts.com - Jessica Cordwell

Now showing Mean Girls (PG)
In Kenya, sixteen-year-old Cady Heron (Angourie Rice) is told that, after being homeschooled in Kenya all her life, she is moving back to the US. On her first day of attending a public high school, outsiders Janis ‘Imi’ike (Auliʻi Cravalho) and Damian Hubbard (Jaquel Spivey) quickly explain the hierarchy of the school’s various cliques. After being warned to avoid the ‘Plastics’, Cady is soon brought into the fold by the queen bee Regina George (Reneé Rapp). Like Sandy Olsson in Grease, Cady navigates the pitfalls of the school, at first infiltrating the ‘Plastics’ out of revenge for the previous wrongs made to her new outsider friends, and due to Cady’s falling for Regina’s ex-boyfriend. It’s hard to believe the extremely quotable Mean Girls (2004), which launched its talented cast, is now 20 years old and is therefore fresh for a remake. Based on the canberradaily.com.au
Broadway musical, which is based on the 2004 comedy film, which was based on the 2002 book Queen Bees and Wannabes, the movie is as fresh as the faces that burst into song at the drop of a hat. While the story, characters, and writing are the same as the original movie, this outing has an infectious energy from our young cast, the songs, and the swooping camera that flies through the halls of the school and various house parties. Verdict: Representing the use of modern technology and a more diverse cast in terms of ethnicity and body positivity, this musical is a ‘fetch’ night out. - Luke McWilliams, themovieclub.net Viewed at Dendy cinemas. 18 January 2024

the look Creating a wardrobe you love with
Amy Abrahams
Letting go of the idea of bouncing back from having kids to embrace the wardrobe of her dreams, Amy Abrahams got rid of the clothes that didn’t serve her. Embracing style at the size she was and documenting the process on Instagram under ‘Wear the Damn Dress’, the Canberra-based stylist and influencer shares tips for creating a wardrobe you will want to wear. “There are lots of studies into the impacts that clothing can have on the way we feel… Clothes have such a meaningful impact on our mental health, on the way we see ourselves and the way we present ourselves to the world. So, having a wardrobe that makes you feel amazing is critical, I think to a whole lot of parts of our lives, not just sort of
the physical appearance, but the way we feel,” says Ms Abrahams. The first step of creating a wardrobe that makes you happy is auditing the clothes you already own. Ms Abrahams says to be ruthless at this stage, particularly when it comes to how the items fit. “They all fit you properly, that means you put them on and you feel comfortable physically, they don’t dig or feel restrictive or, those kinds of pants you have the ‘Oh, they look good but as soon as I sit down, I can’t breathe anymore’. That is not a wardrobe that is going to make you happy.” More important than keeping up with current trends, your wardrobe needs to align with your style and be full of

garments you feel confident wearing. The divide and conquer strategy is what Ms Abrahams suggests; sort clothes into three piles - I love and they fit, I love but they don’t fit comfortably, and I don’t love and they don’t fit. “Get all those clothes in that third pile out of your wardrobe because they’re not serving you, they’re just adding clutter and it makes it really confusing to work out what you love to wear,” she says. Keep the clothes you love and that fit you well. The other is a bit trickier; Ms Abrahams says we often have an emotional connection to clothes. “You think ‘Oh well, I’ll keep that because I was really happy when I wore that or I felt really great when I could wear that particular dress’. I absolutely get the emotional connection to wanting to keep it, but there is a fine line between keeping it to keep that emotional connection and keeping it and making yourself feel like s**t,” explains Ms Abrahams. As we change and grow so does
our personal style, if you’re unsure of what yours is, Ms Abrahams says platforms like Instagram and Pinterest are great for inspiration. She uses a Venn Diagram when teaching clients how to build a wardrobe that works for them. The first circle is what you want to wear and what you like seeing on other people, while the second is what you need to wear with your lifestyle, then where the two overlap, you will find your personal style. “I love to wear sequins, I love to wear tulle, I love to wear fancy dresses but realistically I’m a mum of two boys. I spend most of my time going to work or swimming lessons and the supermarket. So, I need to find sort of a blend in there,” she smiles. health+wellbeing Love scrambles the brain and scientists can now tell us why Love is blind, the saying goes, and thanks to a world-first Australian study, we are now a step closer to understanding why. It is well known that romantic love changes the brain, releasing the so-called love hormone oxytocin, responsible for the euphoria we feel when falling in love. Now, researchers from the ANU, University of Canberra and University of South Australia have measured how a part of the brain is responsible for putting our loved one on a pedestal in that first flush of romance. In the world’s first study investigating the link between the human brain’s behavioural activation system (BAS) and romantic love, researchers surveyed 1,556 young adults who identified as being “in love”. The survey questions focused on the emotional reaction to their partner, their behaviour around them, and the focus they placed on their loved one above all else.
It turns out that when we are in love, our brain reacts differently. It makes the object of our affections the centre of our lives. ANU lead researcher and PhD student Adam Bode says the study – recently published in the journal Behavioural Sciences – sheds light on the mechanisms that cause romantic love. “We actually know very little about the evolution of romantic love,” Mr Bode says. “As a result, every finding that tells us about romantic love’s evolution is an important piece of the puzzle that’s just been started. “It is thought that romantic love first emerged some five million years ago after we split from our ancestors, the great apes. “We know the ancient Greeks philosophised about it a lot, recognising it both as an amazing as well as traumatic experience. The oldest poem ever to be recovered was in fact a love poem dated to around 2000 BC.” University of Canberra academic and UniSA
THE HAIR INSTITUTE by the r clinic
Adjunct Associate Professor, Dr Phil Kavanagh, says the study shows that romantic love is linked to changes in behaviour as well as emotion. “We know the role that oxytocin plays in romantic love, because we get waves of it circulating throughout our nervous system and blood stream when we interact with loved ones,” Dr Kavanagh says. “The way that loved ones take on special importance, however, is due to oxytocin combining with dopamine, a chemical that our brain releases during romantic love. Essentially, love activates pathways in the brain associated with positive feelings.” The next stage of the research involves investigating the differences between men and women in their approach to love, and a worldwide survey identifying four different types of romantic lovers.

home Tips to create the ideal home office
WITH NADINE FROM JOURNEY HOME INTERIORS
January is the perfect time to elevate and revitalise your home office space for increased productivity and comfort. With these tips, you can create a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, setting you up for success in 2024. •
Start by decluttering your workspace clear off any unnecessary paperwork, old files, and any items that don’t serve a functional purpose.
•
Invest in stylish storage solutions like floating shelves, decorative boxes, and cabinetry to keep essential items organised and within easy reach.
1
2
•
Opt for ergonomic furniture to enhance comfort and functionality, such as an adjustable chair and a welldesigned desk to accommodate your work needs.
•
Don’t underestimate the power of good lighting; use ambient lighting to create a warm and inviting atmosphere, and task lighting to ensure your workspace is properly illuminated.
•
Finally, you can introduce indoor plants to bring a touch of nature indoors, promoting a healthier and more vibrant environment.

Tree-top coastal vistas Long Beach NSW 8 Karana Close “Spacious, modern, coastal and ahead of its time” is how agents Pat Jameson and Sandra Masters describe this stunning three-bedroom, three-bathroom home at beautiful Long Beach on the NSW South Coast. For the agents, their favourite parts of this property are the panoramic views, the architectural design, and the proximity to the beach. “The view is not your standard view,” they say. “You have a feeling of being surrounded by natural bush, as though you are sitting directly in the tree canopy, yet it doesn’t obscure your view at all. You see a complete panorama of the beach and beyond – the sand, the sparkling water, Tollgate Islands and the coastline vista of 32

the Batemans Bay town centre that lights up at night.” When it comes to design, the agents say the three levels of space are divided up perfectly for family life. There are two living spaces on separate levels, with views from both floors. It makes it perfect for entertaining – or on those rainy days inside when you’re not at the beach, everyone still has enough space to play. And the location can’t be beat, nestled on a 661sqm block in a private and peaceful cul-de-sac. “We love the fact that you feel like you’re in a bushland setting, yet you’re less than 200m to the sands of the much-coveted Long Beach,” the agents say.
Contact them to inspect 8 Karana Close for a rare opportunity to own a piece of coastal paradise.

So-Young is a Korean single mother raising her adolescent son Dong-Hyun in the suburbs of Canada during the ‘90s. Determined to provide a better life for him than the one she left behind in her native country, she does her best to overcome the constant racial and cultural challenges that confront them. As Dong-Hyun gets older, he becomes increasingly curious about his Korean heritage and in particular, about his deceased father – a topic that SoYoung refuses to address. Instead, she is set on continuing to build on her new life which now includes a relationship with a kind Korean-Canadian man who is eager to take on the role of Dong-Hyun’s surrogate father. This only exacerbates the tense relationship between her and DongHyun. Then, sudden devastating news prompts the mother and son to return to South Korea for the first time since their initial departure with hopes of reconnecting to their roots and reconciling their tragic past. CW has 5/10 x Riceboy Sleeps (M) in-season double passes to be won.
