Message from the Consul General On behalf of the Government of Canada, I am so pleased to wish all of the members of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai a prosperous, healthy and eventful Year of the Snake! I only arrived in Shanghai a few months ago but I am already impressed by the commitment and achievements of the Canadian community in Eastern China. Your ingenuity, focus and dedication to the Canada/China partnership continue to stretch our horizon of opportunity. Never before have the expectations about our bilateral relationship been higher and never before has the need for us to succeed, economically and socially, been more pronounced. During 2012, China became Canada’s second largest export market – bringing the value of our bilateral merchandise trade relationship to $70 billion. Two-way investment flows continued to grow, underpinning the confidence that we have in each other’s economy, including the signature CNOOC/ Nexen investment that eclipsed all previous deals. These numbers and indicators reflect how well our economies complement one another. The benefits in Canada and China are clear – more jobs, greater competitiveness and increased prosperity. The growth in our bilateral economic relationship is reflected in significant increase in flows of people as well. Since 2010, we have seen a steady increase in the number of Chinese visitors to Canada. Last year alone, 298,000 Chinese visited and experienced Canada. China is also the biggest source of international students for Canada, with an increase of 128% in study permits over the last four years. The good news for 2013 is that there is still plenty of room for growth in this relationship. That’s where Canadian Chamber members are so actively making a difference. Canadian companies are showing the world that they have what it takes to bring leading technologies and applications to the globe’s most challenging problems. China’s 12th Five Year Plan focuses on increasing domestic demand, raising productivity, saving energy and protecting the environment. Canadians have the potential to play a significant role in each of those areas. China needs more Canada and Canada needs more China!
Canadian companies are showing the world that they have what it takes to bring leading technologies and applications to the globe’s most challenging problems. Prime Minister Harper visited China in February 2012 and agreed with Premier Wen to take our bilateral relations to a new level. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai is a unique forum for members to contribute directly toward this outcome. To get there, we need to focus the Chamber’s activities, harness each member’s power and broaden our perspective about what’s achievable when two countries work together. My team at the Consulate General of Canada looks forward to working with you.

Message from the Vice Chair Since 1996, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai (CanCham Shanghai) has supported the Canadian and local business communities in China. Looking back at our progress since then and at our achievements in the past year, I am filled with pride.
More than ever, we are committed to supporting Canadian businesses develop and expand in China.
2012 saw a shift in the dynamic of China’s economy. Though the days of double-digit growth may have ended, opportunities remain abundant for those who are able to adapt. As the world’s second largest economy, China should especially be a focus of Canadian small- and mediumsized enterprises (SMEs). With the support of CanCham Shanghai, I am confident they can grow their operations and sales while boosting the Canadian economy and creating new jobs. As we march ahead, 2013 promises to be an active and fruitful year. While our responsibilities as a Chamber have grown, our priorities have not changed. More than ever, we are committed to supporting Canadian businesses develop and expand in China. CanCham Shanghai’s success would not be possible without the support of our members, the dedicated service of our staff and the commitment of the Board. I’d like to offer my sincere thanks to everyone.
