Holistic Physical Therapy Ian L. Rubinstein, M.P.T., M.R., owner of Eclectic Physical Therapy™, has over 22 years experience helping thousands of patients with their physical discomforts. He has developed a unique combination of therapies, combining manual soft tissue release techniques with traditional physical therapy. This not-so-typical intervention has proven key to addressing his patients’ many states of “dis— ease”. Ian’s specialties include, but are not limited to: Neck/ Back Pain, Headaches/Migraines, Bulging/Herniated Discs, Pinched Nerves, Tendonitis/ Bursitis, TMJ Dysfunctions, Fibromyalgia. returns to its relaxed, balanced, healthy state. He has developed a unique therapy that focuses on listening to the body, identifying the trouble areas, and intuitively responding to its needs. Unlike traditional chiropractic and physical therapy methods which emphasize routine manipulation of the symptomatic body part, Ian utilizes a distinctive approach by incorporating techniques like Reiki, Craniosacral Therapy, Visceral Manipulation and other forms of soft tissue release. This is what he refers to as “Light Touch” therapy. This diverse blend provides a patient with a therapy flexible enough to address many causes of the symptoms.

Serving South of Boston to the Cape in Print and Online A Lighter Journey With my cancer diagnosis behind me, I refuse to have cancer define me. It is just a small tiny piece of the larger me. That sounds like one of those empowering statements you often hear that is really easier said than done. Regardless, it’s still true. It’s what I believe made me stronger and has brought me a world of personal growth. Does that sound too positive for someone whose was diagnosed with the “Big C”? It’s meant to. Having been treated for cancer has forced me to learn a lot, not only about my disease, but about myself. During the first part of this healing journey I felt so vulnerable and small. Eventually, I've learned that it's ok to be vulnerable and to ask for help. This is a difficult role for me as I have always been strong. I've always been able to help others and it hasn’t been within my comfort zone to reach out for support for myself. "I’m the strong one. I’m the one who takes care of everyone else. I’m the rock." But now I know it doesn’t make me feel less independent or incapable to reach out to others for help, assistant or answers. I don’t think of myself as “less” for doing so. In fact, it was a nice feeling to be able to receive love and care. I have learned that I decided not to shy away from the challenge, but to meet it head on. While people expressed their opinion and concerns, I knew that ultimately I was the person who had to take control, do the research and then make a plan of action that I could live with. Sure, I had some low moments. I dealt with fear of the unknown, doubt and frustration. At times, I even felt paralyzed in my decision-making. Throughout this experience, I’ve found that, ultimately, I had to delve inside myself and search for my own answers. It was an enlightening and powerful journey of self-discovery. What matters most of all is that this experience has magnified my quest in helping others to heal and to offer support by assisting them in discovering the true advocate and voice within themselves. In my journey I was given support that made my load lighter. It is my hope that through sharing my personal experience and bringing you Healthy Living Magazine, it helps make your journey a little lighter. The printing of this issue of Health Living Magazine marks 155 days of being cancerfree for me. Your support has been immeasurable to me, and makes my heart beat even stronger and my life’s work more definable. Now, I want to shout out a special thanks to all my peeps you took part in my healing process. They know who they are. Thank you for braiding my hair, feeding my children, folding my laundry, sending me light, holding me up, rubbing me down, hearing me out and hearing me out again, being patient and most of all, honoring and respected my decisions! I am most grateful,

or depression. And although they made not appear medically beneficial, the emotional and psychological rewards can be astonishing. Here are just a few examples.

It’s a widely known fact that the power of the human touch connects us and uplifts us all. Marianne Williamson, in her book “Everyday Grace,” writes, “Spiritually, we do not exist in isolation…we’re like sunbeams of the same sun and waves of the same ocean.” A hug, a simple touch of the hand, a brief conversation – although these seem like small acts of ANIMAL-ASSISTED service, to someone in a medical THERAPY crisis or a life-threatening illness they offer a truly extraordinary experience. Through a variety of mind/body practices, one can help reduce stress, promote comfort, decrease pain, and enhance one's wellbeing during a difficult time.

MASSAGE THERAPY

There are many types of therapy that can be utilized to promote healing or, at the very least, provide a feeling of comfort to those who suffer from illness, pain

HEALING TOUCH Healing touch is an energy-based approach to health and healing. In this HEALING TOUCH form of therapy, healthcare providers consciously use their hands in a heartcentered and intentional way to support and facilitate physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health. Healing touch uses the physical touch to influence the YOGA THERAPY human energy system – specifically the energy field that surrounds the body – and the energy centers that control the flow from the energy field to the physical body. The goal of healing touch is to restore balance and strengthen the body to heal. MASSAGE THERAPY Massage therapy, often referred to as bodywork or somatic therapy, refers to the application of various techniques to the muscular structure and soft tissues of the body that include applying fixed or movable pressure, holding, vibration, rocking, friction, kneading and compression using primarily the hands, although massage therapists do use other areas of the body, such as the forearms, elbows or feet. All of the techniques are used for the benefit of the musculoskeletal, circulatory-lymphatic, nervous, and other systems of the body. In fact, massage therapy positively influences the overall health and well-being of the client, loosens tight muscles, calms the nervous system, reduces mental stress and assists in recovery from injuries and illnesses.

ACUPUNCTURE

A Reiki session can help ease tension and stress and can help support the body to facilitate an environment for healing on all levels – physical, mental, and emotional. A session is pleasant and relaxing and is often utilized for one’s personal wellness.

POLARITY THERAPY Energy fields and currents exist everywhere in nature. Polarity Therapy asserts that the flow and balance of energy in the human body is the foundation of good health. When energy is POLARITY unbalanced, blocked or fixed due to stress or THERAPY other factors, pain and disease arise. Blockages generally manifest in sequence from the subtle to the dense levels of the field. Polarity Therapy seeks to find the blockages and release energy to normal flow patterns, and to maintain the Energy Field in an open, flexible condition. REIKI THERAPY Reiki is a spiritual healing art with its roots in Japanese origin. The word Reiki comes from the Japanese word (Rei) which means “Universal Life” and (Ki) which means “Energy”. Reiki is not affiliated with any particular religion or religious practice. It is not massage nor is it based on belief or suggestion. It is a subtle and effective form of energywork using spiritually guided life force energy.

their own healing energy and use it to strengthen energy in themselves and help others. It is believed that a person’s “ki” or energy should be strong and free flowing. When this is true a person’s body and mind is in a positive state of health. When the energy becomes weak or blocked it could lead to symptoms of physical or emotional imbalance.

INNER HEALING

The art of acupuncture involves insertion of thin sterilized needles into specific acupoints along the meridians of the body. Acupuncture is one form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which originated over 2000 years ago, in China. The general theory of acupuncture is based on the premise that there are patterns of energy flow (Qi) through the body that are essential for health. Disruptions of this flow are believed to be responsible for disease.

NURTITION

Breathing . . . Your Body’s Most Essential Function.

by Stacey Richmond

Did you know that, on average, a person at rest takes about 16 breaths per minute? This means we breathe about 960 breaths an hour, 23,040 breaths a day and 8,409,600 a year. The person who lives to be 80 will take about 672,768,000 breaths in a lifetime. (Every Breath You Take | HeraldTribune.com)

Take a moment to notice your breathing. Is it fast, slow, deep, shallow? It can feel strange to actually think about breathing. Fortunately, this life-sustaining function is managed by our autonomic nervous system and subconscious mind. Even though we do not have to constantly remind ourselves to breath, often we may experience the side effects of not breathing properly. Signs that you might be missing out on the nourishing effect of proper breathing include low energy, fatigue, anxiety, and hunger (your body looking to increase energy). As we breathe we

are constantly nourishing our cells with oxygen which is the essential fuel for many metabolic functions

"Take a moment to notice your breathing. Is it fast, slow, deep, shallow?" in the body, including digesting and assimilating the food you eat, alkalizing the blood, calming the nervous system and nourishing the heart. Learning to breathe properly by consciously regulating your breathing pattern can increase the metabolic power of your body. Understanding the anatomy of breathing may help you get into the flow. Relaxing the abdomen allows air to move to the lower lobes of the lungs, which leads to an expansion of the ribs and activation of the diaphragm – a large muscle located between the chest and the abdomen. When the diaphragm contracts it is forced downward, causing the abdomen to expand. This causes negative pressure within the chest, forcing air into the lungs. Stimulating the diaphragm as you breathe elicits the relaxing effect we feel from inhaling and exhaling deeply. Placing your hand on your lower belly as

you inhale can help your body and mind coordinate this gentle flow of inhalation and exhalation. Breathe in slowly and evenly through your nose, exhale gently out through your mouth. It’s like taking a nourishing breath on the inhale, and a detoxifying release on the exhale. Yoga science offers many breathing techniques for increasing vitality, recognizing that breathing is the carrier of our life force, or prana. Pranayama is a yoga practice that literally means the control of life force or energy. It uses breathing techniques to change subtle energies within the body for health and wellbeing. Breathing exercises can act as a bridge to those functions of the body of which we generally do not have conscious control. Our amazing bodies knows exactly how to use the daily rhythm of our inhale and exhale to nourish itself, increasing our ability to metabolize not only our food, but our life experiences and our emotions. Our breathing truly is the most important source of nourishment for our body, mind and spirit. Stacey Richmond, founder of Kind Eating a heart centered clinical approach to caring for your whole self through compassionate eating and awareness. Stacey's practice is based on a philosophy of bodymind-spirit nutrition which takes into consideration who you are as an eater and how that shapes what why and how you eat. www.kindeating.com

Wheatgrass is grown from the wheat seed (wheat berries), which is the whole kernel of the wheat grain. To an inexperienced eye, the blades of wheatgrass look very similar to those of any common lawn grass. There are, however, considerable differences between them beneath their uniform outer appearance. Wheatgrass is considered by many people to be the most healing of all grasses. it contains more than 90 elements from the soil, and it is one of nature’s richest sources of vitamins A and C. When it is grown in fertile organic soil, it contains all of the known mineral elements and is rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, potassium, sulfur, sodium, cobalt

and zinc. Wheatgrass is also abundant in vitamin B-17, a substance that can destroy cancer cells selectively. Scientists at the University of Texas concluded that wheatgrass juice is exceptional in its chlorophyll content. Known as “nature’s greatest healer,” chlorophyll produces an environment that suppresses bacterial growth in the body and counteracts ingested toxins. It also helps to purify the liver, build the blood’s oxygen-carrying potential and regulate digestion. As the most nutritious food wheatgrass is a powerful purifier of the stomach, liver, pancreas and circulatory system. David O’Brien, the Director of The Green Light, who spent eight years

traveling the country and learning from the best in field of Human Nutrition, highly recommends wheatgrass at his local juice bars. "I believe and have witness first hand through seeing 1000's of people heal themselves from every disease and disorder they found themselves in." He goes on to say "that the immune system, given the right “raw” materials, could recover and become super strong and oxygenated. In addition to consuming wheat grass juice, David goes on to say that "people could also try to avoid all meats, dairy products and processed foods, and focuses on 'live' foods to obtain optimal health. Have you ever struggled with a foggy concept of who you really are and the true nature of your life’s calling? You may have found yourself working in a job or business that leaves you sapped of strength, void of passion and being tossed to a fro like a small boat on a stormy ocean. If you are feeling adrift in your life, there is a good chance you may have lost touch with your authentic self for the moment. It never ceases to amaze me how life’s daily grind and our culture can wear away our clarity about who we were created to be. Between friends, family, co-workers or business partners – we are often pressured to behave in certain ways that appeal to all of them but not to us. We may have even chosen certain friendships or relationships that don’t suit us, but because we are expected to be “nice” – we soldier on in relationships that don’t accept us as we are. How do you find your authentic self again – and allow it to unfold in your life, your relationships and your work? Start by asking yourself this question:

“When I look back over my life (even back into childhood), what was I doing and how was I expressing myself at those times when I felt the best physically, emotionally and spiritually?” Write out some memories in answer to this question. Take a really good personality assessment. I recommend the MBTI® (Myers Briggs Type Indicator). Once taken, study the results to the point that you really understand what motivates you, what energizes you, how you prefer to make decisions, how you handle time and what type of information you prefer to pay attention to first. Activate your right brain and let your creativity spill out to give you clues about finding your way back to your authentic self. One example might be to doodle with a pen, colored pencils, or markers – see what shapes appeal to you the most. Do you prefer soft, curving lines, or the sharp edges of a square or rectangle? Are you drawn to the triangle or do you like elliptical shapes? Pray and/or meditate. Ask your higher being to show you who were created to be. Be open to words or images while

praying or meditating that will clue you in on your life purpose. Write out any thoughts that come to you no matter how random they may seem. Talk to family or friends who have known you a long time (whom you trust to be non-judging) and ask them what traits they see consistently in you and what they think you are good at. Sometimes, we have strayed so far from who we really are that we may need help from an objective person to help us mine for the treasure of our authentic self. Living your life, interacting in relationships and doing the work that flows from your authentic self will bring the success of feeling fulfilled. You will be the most effective version of you if you stop living up to everyone else’s concept of who you should be and just allow your sense of self to flow from the core of your being. Re-Discover Your Authentic Self: Five Tips

REFLECTION

Since ancient times, wise cultures have appreciated the value of a retreat. Time in retreat allows us to step out of the complexity of our lives and, instead, listen deeply to our bodies, hearts and minds. It’s an important time of discovering inner understanding and freedom from our busy lives and cluttered minds.

A retreat can provide an opportunity and a caring container for undertaking the struggles that hold us back from living a balanced life. The central practice on retreats is THE CRAIGVILLE RETREAT CENTER mindfulness, which enables us to see the ways we create difficulties in our lives and to discover a freedom of heart in the midst of all things.

SKY MEADOW RETREAT

While experiencing a silent and mindful environment, awareness sharpens, the body quiets, the mind clears and space opens for insight and understanding to develop. So, without cell phones, television and e-mails to distract you, I challenge you to retreat inward and find your solitude and balance. There are several quiet, beautiful places of retreat that are conducive to contemplation and reflection. YOGA

Ongoing What makesOpen usUnique? Enrollment

We specialize in individualized coaching and mentoring. It allows students to fit the program into their busy schedules, but also provides a unique connection with the teacher –

the way yoga was originally taught.

The SACRED SPACE YOGA SCHOOL is a Yoga Alliance Registered Yoga School direced by Paulette Gloria Harwood, ERYT-500, a yoga teacher with over 20 years of teaching experience. Taping to Relieve Pain by Cindy (Rambaldo) Doody

Did you know Kinesio Taping or (Neuro-Proprioceptive taping) is a relatively new technique? It takes advantage of the physiological effects of taping. This technique and its basic principals of application are known by many names including Kinesio-taping, K-taping, ROCKTAPE, Cure-tape, Fysiotape, Medi-taping, and Kinesio-Italia, and many more. Cindy Doody of South Shore Neuromuscular Massage and Sport Therapy explains that Taping is a technique which is based on the body’s own natural healing process. Here's more. Taping is thought to have more of a neuro-physiological effect versus an actual mechanical effect on tissues. Tape can benefit patients due to increased proprioception and increased

postural stability. Taping can also affect blood circulation to the area by providing continuous stimulation to the skin and subcutaneous tissues. So, when we have a sore area what do we do? Generally we rub it, as any good massage therapist would say. The tactile pressure and stimulation of the receptors in our skin make us feel better. The tape provides gentle tissuesheering all day therefore providing a beneficial analgesic effect on the area. In addition, the tape gives us feedback to prevent painful and/or improper posturing. Tape can also be used to

facilitate a muscle, inhibit a muscle or provide structural support to the joint, without inhibiting range of motion (ROM). I personally have been using ROCKTAPE in my practice for 6 years. I have used it for taping movement patterns on elite athletes to edema in cancer patients. Cindy is a Muscular Therapist and Owner of South Shore Neuromuscular Massage and Sport Therapy. Over the years, She has learned to use many modalities, to increase her "toolbelt." She uses corrective exercises, postural analysis and Rocktape as part of her "reinforcement tool-belt". Architecting a session individual to each client, so hopefully her client can feel better, longer! www.cindydoodymassage.com

5 Natural Treatments For Common Skin Conditions.

by Antonia Balfour

Have you ever seen a dermatologist for the treatment of eczema? Or psoriasis? Or a "mystery" rash? Sometimes it seems like no matter what skin condition you have, the doctor will simply send you home with a steroid. So, you may ask — why look for an alternative? My answer is twofold. First, topical steroids don't get to the root of the problem. They can often tame a red and angry flare-up, but relief is temporary. They don't address the underlying cause, prevention, or even a real cure. The most effective way to heal the skin is to create changes from within. Second, topical steroids have serious side effects, especially when used long term or in too strong of a dose. Steroid atrophy is a condition I see often in my practice. Someone who has suffered with long-term eczema, for example, will have areas on their body where the skin has become paper thin. Blood vessels can be seen in detail, as the skin has become almost transparent. Other side effects include easy bruising, changes in pigmentation, and striae (stretch marks) that are permanent and irreversible. Alternatives commonly used in holistic medicine include: 1. BORAGE SEED OIL Borage seed oil can be taken internally (in capsules) or used

2. CAMOMILE A superstar remedy for the skin, camomile is effective for soothing bug

bites, healing wounds and relieving skin infections and rashes. It helps alleviate pain from hemorrhoids and has powerful anti-itching properties. It is commonly used in the treatment of eczema, although needs to be introduced slowly as it can trigger allergies. Avoid camomile if you're allergic to ragweed — the two plants are in the same family. Camomile creams and ointments are widely available, or just brew a very strong mug of camomile tea, pour onto a washcloth and use as a compress on affected areas of the skin. 3. SEA BUCKTHORN OIL Sea buckthorn oil is a deep-orange oil that comes from the berry of the

topically. It has been shown to benefit seborrheic dermatitis, eczema and

4. TAMANU NUT OIL This rich oil is extracted from the seeds of a South Pacific evergreen

tree. It reduces inflammation, alleviates pain, has antibacterial properties and encourages the

growth of new skin cells. It is used in acne, eczema, psoriasis, shingles, scrapes and cuts, but should be avoided by anyone with a nut allergy. Although this oil can be used at full strength, I find it to be a very "active" oil and can be irritating to some when used in its pure form. I always recommend diluting it at 50% with a carrier oil such as almond oil, olive oil or sunflower oil. 5. BLACK STRIPED SNAKE When I have a patient with severe, chronic itching that's really driving

her crazy, I ask them if they'd be OK including black striped snake (Zaocys dhumnades). Although it sounds like an ingredient reserved just for the hard-core holistic warriors out there,

there are a lot of people who jump on board, willing to do anything to stop the itch. This nontoxic, dried snake has been used in Chinese medicine for centuries, and is truly an outstanding ingredient to stop itching. It's always used as part of a blend (never on its own), and comes in powdered form, so it's really not as gross as it sounds. Although all these remedies are natural, that doesn't mean they are safe and effective for everyone. For those with sensitive skin, especially atopic eczema sufferers, make sure you test any new topical product. Use a small amount of the oil or herb wash on a test area before applying to skin lesions, rashes or sensitive areas. Antonia Balfour, L.Ac. is an acupuncturist and herbalist. sea buckthorn plant. The benefits to the skin are wide-ranging. It helps in the healing of chronic conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. It also benefits burns — including sunburns and radiation burns for those undergoing cancer treatment. To use topically, dilute the pure oil with a carrier oil such as jojoba, avocado or almond. A small amount of sea buckthorn oil goes a long way. I recommend using it at a strength of 10% or less.

Developing Your Psychic Abilities

by Jill Magso

How often have you told a caller or someone you ran into, “I was just thinking about you!” Do you ever know who is on the phone before you answer it without looking at Caller ID? Do you often guess what someone is going to say next? Do you invariably wake up two minutes before the alarm goes off? Do your hunches ever come true? Everyone has some psychic tendencies. We are all born with psychic abilities, but society conditions us to hide them. Our rational, logical left brain is encouraged at the expense of the intuitive right brain. Still, be assured there is nothing weird or strange about psychic abilities, and they can be yours again if you are willing to work for them. Being psychic is about personal and spiritual growth. As you travel to new spiritual realms, you will learn about your life’s purpose, be in contact with your higher self, and be guided by your soul, not your lower self or ego.

Put your faith and trust in your Higher Power’s hands, the Collective Mind or the Universe, and trust that they will lead you to use your gifts wisely and well. Here are 8 ways to improve your psychic abilities: 1. Meditate. The form of meditation is not as important as the discipline of doing it on a regular basis. People who establish a regular meditation time in their lives say they gain a sense of wanting to improve their attitudes towards life. The joining of the subconscious spiritual mind with the conscious mind will definitely change your life in a short period of time. Start with 15-minute sessions and work your way to longer sessions. 2. Relax/slow down. It is crucial that you learn to slow down your mind if you are to develop psychic skills. The normal state of consciousness goes too quickly for any type of psychic connection. The awake-state brain

wave frequency is about 14 to 20 cycles per minute. Psychic activity can occur when brain waves are 7 to 14 cycles per minute or in the alpha frequency. Learn to stop throughout the day and slow down. 3. Notice or be aware. Once we begin to fully realize how much more we are than just our physical bodies, we start noticing things in our world and expanding our awareness. Attention must be paid to the information received by your mind, body, and emotions. Everything in the universe is connected. Think of Carl Jung’s theory of synchronicity and begin paying closer attention to the “coincidences” in your life. 4. Imagine. The faculty of imagination enables you to rehearse before you make a move. Unsolvable problems are solved using the gifts of the imagination. Learn to fully fantasize, to daydream. Regain a childlike joy in creativity. Teach yourself to visualize carefully down

we knew in a previous life. Others say they are deceased souls we knew in this life. They will answer questions, give you information, and show you the way. Begin by attempting to get in touch with them during meditation. Try letting them respond to your questions in your journal through automatic writing. There are many books you can read on this subject that will enlighten you on your way. Just remember to stay positive and keep an open mind.

to the smallest detail. Place an object in front of you and observe it carefully—its features, blemishes, light and shadows. Then close your eyes. Can you still see it? Does it look the same or are there differences? Keep practicing until the two images are exactly alike. The more developed your imagination, the more psychic you will be. Remember to stay as playful as a child. Try picking up energy patterns you would otherwise miss by using only your peripheral vision for a while. 5. Listen. Stop at certain periods during the day and join in the stillness. Slow yourself down and just listen. Information can’t come to you when you are speeding around, jumping from one activity to another in a noisy environment. Learn to listen to your breathing, to nature’s soft, gentle sounds, and to what is happening in that very moment. 6. Keep a journal. Your dreams may become more vivid once you are paying attention. Keep a notebook by your bed and capture the dreams before they drift off. Symbols may repeat themselves and become important. Every dreamer has their own code of symbols, according to Jung, and you gradually learn the language. Use the journal to write down other impressions that come to you in other ways. Write down the things you are noticing and learning. Pay special attention to new insights. 7. Practice. Psychic powers are a skill, like learning to play the piano is a skill. Learning them requires discipline and practice. See if you can determine who is on the phone before you answer it. Let your intuition tell you who is knocking at the door before you ask. Try predicting what will come in the day’s mail. When you are empathizing with a friend, repeat back to her what it is you think she is feeling and see if you are right. In the morning clear your mind, and use your intuition to tell you what people you will have interactions with that day. Try to let faces come to you naturally. 8. Discover your spirit guides and make psychic contact with them. Everyone has guides just waiting to help them. Some say they are souls

How Safe is Your Laundry Detergent?

by Cisco Holland

The concept of using alkalis in cleaning products is almost as old as civilization itself. Soaps containing lye have existed for well over 100 years. It is true grocery store brands are now more advanced, but the basic technology is still the same. Alkalis break down soil and stains so that they can be washed away. The main problem with alkalis is that they utilize a harsh chemical reaction which has no boundaries. That chemical reaction eats the soil . . . your fabrics . . . and even your new washing machine! The good news is, there are better options. When choosing a laundry detergent, or really any stain-fighting or soap-type product, look for natural ingredients or enzyme-based products. You want your manufacturer’s priority to be the health of its consumers rather than its profits. The enzymes can be targeted to dissolve stains through advanced science, which is a safer alternative to the alkalis practices of the past. Enzyme-based formulas will dissolve the dirt and stains similarly as to how water dissolves salt or sugar. The biggest benefit of enzymes is that they can be developed to only dissolve targeted matter. Alkalis attack everything. In fact, it was recently brought to my attention by professionals in the appliance field that they are seeing many of the new frontend loader washing machines in need of repair or replacement within two years because of the harsh alkalis in common laundry detergents. So do yourself, your clothes and your washing machines a favor and look for a better, gentler laundry detergent.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetes affects the body’s ability to produce or use insulin effectively to control blood sugar (glucose) levels. Although glucose is an important source of energy for the body’s cells, too much glucose in the blood for a long time can cause damage in many parts of the body, including the heart, kidneys, blood vessels and small blood vessels in the eyes.

Miriam Englander, M.D., is Fellowship trained in diabetes and retinal disorders and cares for patients at Ophthalmic Consultants. “What we are concerned about with diabetes and your eyes”, Dr. Englander explains, “are the blood vessels in the eye’s retina (the light sensitive tissue lining the back of the

eye) swelling, leaking or closing off completely or growth of abnormal new blood vessels in the retina. This is

called diabetic retinopathy.” People who are at greater risk of developing diabetic retinopathy are those who have poor blood sugar control, pregnant women, high blood pressure and/or high cholesterol.

Do It For a Cause

African-Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans, are more likely to develop diabetic retinopathy. “Even if no diabetic retinopathy is detected”, adds Dr. Englander, “diabetes can cause vision fluctuations within a matter of hours. If your blood sugar levels change quickly, it can affect the shape of your eye’s lens, causing blurry vision, which goes back to normal after your blood sugar stabilizes.” Early detection and early intervention is important in preserving good vision. A dilated eye exam will be able to detect if there is any diabetic retinopathy or other eye disorders resulting from excess blood sugar. Diabetic patients are at a higher risk for glaucoma and early cataracts. What steps can you take to avoid any eye problems? Dr. Englander shares with patients: •Keep your blood sugar levels under control. •Keep your blood pressure under control. •If you smoke, quit. •See your eye doctor for a yearly dilated eye exam. You are an important member of your healthcare team if you notice any change in vision, call your doctor. Miriam Englander, M.D. Medical degree received from Stanford University School of Medicine and internship at Weill-Cornell Medical School. She completed her ophthalmology residency training from Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary & Harvard Medical School. Dr. Englander continued on to achieve a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the Cole Eye Institute, Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Dr. Englander joins Ophthalmic Consultants team of prestigious doctors and is now welcoming new patients at OCB’s Sandwich, Yarmouth and Plymouth offices.

If you're training for an endurance event, or maintain a moderate to high level of activity, eating for recovery after workouts should become part of your normal routine (if it isn't already). Foods that possess inflammationlowering properties can help the body recover by initiating the healing process more quickly after a hard workout. "The Highs and Lows of Carbohydrate Diets" by Edward Coyle, Ph.D., FACSM, the recommended post-workout period to restore muscle

glycogen stores between very hard training sessions is 24 hours. Coyle advises athletes to consume about 1 gram of carbohydrate per kilogram of body weight each hour after intense exercise until they eat their next meal. Coyle notes that consuming protein with carbohydrates speeds recovery when it's ingested within the first 40 minutes after the session, and a surge in glycogen resynthesis can occur when protein is eaten with carbohydrates two hours after the workout is complete.

The key takeaways here are to eat a snack that combines carbs and protein within the first 40 minutes after finishing your intense effort, then to consume a similar meal-size combination of these macronutrients two hours later.

Here are some snack tips that restock your muscle glycogen, ease inflammation, and speed recovery so you can ramp up for your next training session. Tip: Combine a lean source of protein with a complex carbohydrate, providing 150-200 calories per serving (approximate).

STRUCTURAL THERAPY

Eating for Recovery After Workout

Free Your Mind, Follow Your Journey & Discover Your Soul!

The Dance of Mother Earth Base Chakra The dance of the base chakra draws inspiration from tribal dancing. These dances are linked to one’s roots, survival and grounding. This dance emphasized movements of the legs and feet connect us to solid earth. We envisage dancing around an ancient campfire, bringing our own tribal dance to life. We also draw inspiration from the natural movements found in the animal kingdom. Shamans believe that animals can teach humans the power of instinctual energy and animal dances are deeply entrenched in shamanic ritual. A tiger, a snake, a dragon may join you – all animals whose energy corresponds to the base chakra energies.

The Dance of Sensuality Sacral Chakra

The dance of the sacral chakra often relates to the feminine dances which celebrate many of the qualities associated with the sacral, including emotions and sexuality. This sacral dance can be slow and sensual, or flirtatious and erotic, with fluid movements of the hips and belly. This Dance transforms you into a gypsy, a belly dancer, an ancient goddess, as you surrender to the serpentine movements of the feminine. In this sensual dance the connecting force of Eros is evoked, and it’s energy infuses throughout our bodies.

The Dance of Power Solar Plexus Chakra

To dance the solar plexus chakra is to call on the warrior dances of the Maori. These warrior dances were masculine, powerful, athletic and virile, as they rhythmically mimicked the art of the fight. This dance has fast dynamic movements to ignite the fire in our belly, fueling our dance with energy and strength. Reining all this fiery energy in, movements then become strong, purposeful and clearly defined as our inner warrior emerges triumphant, brave and strong.

The Dance of Love Heart Chakra To dance the heart chakra is to move with lightness, joy and compassion. Many of these dances used exaggerated arm movements to gently whirl into deep states of joyful harmony. In this Dance, we draw inspiration, moving the arms to feel uplifted, light and free. Inspired by the whirling of the ancient ones, we dance a soaring journey of love, compassion and joy.

The Dance of Expression Throat Chakra

The movements of the throat chakra have been inspired by many ancient dances. So many cultures all over the planet interweave the voice and dance to increase the awareness of spirit. The Greek word horus refers to both dance and song, and is the origin of the word chorus. In Ancient Egypt, performers often danced while reciting poetry, while in Hawaii, chant and dance are blended to communicate the story. In Tibetan culture, mystical rituals performed by monks interweave chanting and sound (gyaling horns, cymbals and bells), with delicate movements of the body. In this Dance we weave sound and movement in a ‘mantra-dance’ which intensifies our self- expression and creativity.

At the third eye chakra, we can lift up into ecstatic and altered states of consciousness through trance-dance. Often dancers are inspired by imagining they are a North American Indian, who has danced for days, in order to go deeply into trance. The movements tend to be simple, repetitive, even monotonous. The dance of the third eye is the dance of the intuitive mind. In this Dance each dancer drifts into his or her own visual universe of images, colors, and insights, achieving a deeply meditative state.

The Dance of the Soul Crown Chakra

The dance of the crown chakra is a devotional dance, one in a long line of dances that embrace the religious and the spiritual. In ancient Shamanic practice, from the Celts to the indigenous peoples of the Americas and Asia, dance was used to commune with the spirits. In Ancient Egypt certain ritual dances were crucial to the successful outcome of religious rites. In this Dance, we open the gateway to the soul through this meditative sacred dance. The dance of the crown chakra is the most paradoxical of all the dances: it is the dance of stillness. Often there will be little physical movement visible to any observer. The dance is internal – for now it is the soul’s turn to dance.

mixed breed who has extra toes hanging off his legs. Why do some dogs have these and some don’t? A: To answer the question of these extra digits, I spoke with Dr. Jennifer Johnson of South Hingham Veterinary Services. Here is what she has to say about them: “Dewclaws are the first digit of dogs and cats and can be thought of like a person’s thumbs. Normally, the first digits on the hind limbs of dogs and cats do not develop at all. However, sometimes these digits do develop. There are certain dog breeds, specifically the Great Pyrenees and Pyrenees crosses that typically have dewclaws on the hind legs and sometimes these dewclaws have multiple nails growing out of them. There are two types of dewclaws: the first type is tightly attached to the limb by bone, muscle and skin, and the second type is only attached to the limb by loose connective tissue and skin. The loosely attached type of dewclaw tends to dangle. In both types, the dewclaws generally do not make contact with the ground when

the pet is walking and therefore are considered non-weight bearing digits. Certain breeders – in particular those who breed hunting dogs – choose to have the dewclaws of their puppies removed shortly after they are born. If a newly adopted dog has the tightly attached type of dewclaws, they are unlikely develop any problems and therefore do not require removal. Additionally, there are some who believe the dewclaws may be advantageous to dogs involved in agility sports and recommend leaving the dewclaws if present. The problem with loose and floppy type of dewclaws are two-fold: first, they can get caught on things like carpeting, fallen branches or tall grass/brush and second, the nails will sometimes curl around and grow into the pads of the digit if the owners are not diligent about regularly trimming the nails. In my opinion, owners have two choices. If the nails are going to be difficult for them to cut or they anticipate using the dog for hunting or working, they can be removed. However, if the dog is going to spend most of its life walking and playing primarily on paved surfaces then removal is probably not necessary. If problems do crop up with dewclaws over time, they can be surgically removed. The procedure does require general anesthesia and involves a small incision, sutures, a small bandage and few days of rest and exercise restriction.

pets a vegan diet too? A: If your pet is a guinea pig or rabbit, it shouldn’t be a problem. If you are considering feeding your cat a vegetarian diet, forget it. Your cat is a true carnivore and will probably pick up and run away from home! Dogs are omnivores, so convincing them to become vegans is possible but most dogs will not cooperate. If you insist on turning your dog into a vegetarian, I defer to Dr. Ernie Ward. He is not only a veterinarian, but a vegetarian as well. “The simple answer is that dogs can do just fine on a carefully balanced vegetarian or vegan diet, while cats cannot. Sure, you can try to work around the whole catsare-obligate-carnivores thing by supplementing certain synthetic amino acids, but it gets tricky, not to mention dangerous to the cat’s health. So the answer is yes for dogs, but no for cats. The comment that I most often hear after I state that dogs can be fed a vegetarian or vegan diet is that canines do better on a meat-based diet. Again, I’m not going to argue. There aren’t any studies that I’m aware of that have compared longevity and disease occurrence in dogs who've been fed meat versus canines on vegetarian diets. Interestingly, one of the world’s oldest dogs, Bramble, who lived to a reported 27 years old in the U.K., was

never fed an ounce of meat by her strictly vegan owner. I became a vegetarian for two main reasons: my health and my beliefs. As a member of a long line of Southern males who were overweight and died at early ages from coronary heart disease, I started to look for ways to avoid that fate. My beliefs coincided with my health revelation, when I became increasingly uncomfortable with the thought of eating my friends. (I’m not a wacko extremist; I’m simply concerned with how animals are treated.) But do these reasons apply to my dog? Point One: Is it healthier for my dogs to be fed a vegetarian diet? Maybe. Maybe not. There’s simply not enough scientific data on canine vegetarian diets. Point Two: Does my dog care how food animals are treated? Probably not, so I apply the same logic to them that I apply to young children, I must make that decision for them. And here’s where the real dilemma begins: At this time, we really don’t have great choices when it comes to vegetarian or vegan diets for dogs. Sure, you can cook excellent vegetarian meals for your dogs, but it takes more than just time — you also need to commit to learn what will truly give your dog all the nutrients that he needs, and then properly follow through to ensure that he gets them. Without the guidance of a veterinarian, creating a fully balanced diet for your pet can be difficult.” Q: Sometimes my dog pulls on his leash or goes in 2 or 3 different directions on our walks. What can I do to change this behavior? A: Well, it sounds like you need to coach your dog a little bit about
