Bursary Pupil Selection
Finding the right pupils for our bursary programme is vital. Once a place has been offered at Canford any pupil may apply for a Bursary, some may be Scholars, others may not be. The level that we award varies according to individual circumstances and families have to demonstrate a genuine need. Money raised via our fundraising wholly supports pupils coming to Canford on a 100%+ bursary place.
Largely, although not exclusively these are awarded via our partnership with Royal SpringBoard, the UK’s largest boarding school bursary charity, providing life-transforming opportunites for disadvantaged and vulnerable young people in 120 independent and state boarding schools.
All of the children and young people that Royal SpringBoard supports are from families where the household income has been assessed as being well below that needed to fund a boarding school education. They either are currently, or have been, looked after in the care system; vulnerable and on the ‘edge of care’ due to difficult home lives; or are from areas with high levels of social deprivation.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
• Working in partnerships at community level and with Local Authorities, SpringBoard identify young people for whom a bursary placement at boarding/independent school offers a life-transforming opportunity
• They then match those young people to available 110%-funded bursary places at schools best-suited to their needs and interests. These bursaries ensure that, in addition to covering school fees, SpringBoarders have the means to fully embrace the opportunities they encounter, including access to uniform and sports equipment, learning materials and participation in extracurricular activities.

• Support is provided to ensure SpringBoarders thrive throughout their placements.
• Beyond the bursary, SpringBoarder alumni are supported to continue to aim high and realise their ambitions, navigate fulfilling careers and make positive contributions in their communities.
Canford works closely with Royal SpringBoard and associated partnership organisations and has developed excellent relationships in order to identify and select pupils who will benefit most from a bursary and in turn give back in so many ways to both Canford and their home community. We currently have eight pupils at Canford who have been referred to us via SpringBoard.
By securing fully-funded bursaries at boarding schools, Royal Springboard, together with Canford and the network of boarding schools across the UK, provides these children and young people with the opportunity to move to a safe and structured environment, away from often troubled and challenging circumstances. Whilst ensuring that such children will be academically able to thrive, we do not see just the most able or talented, but those who stand to gain most from, and contribute to, a boarding education. Once at Canford, there is subtle but additional pastoral care in place for bursary pupils to ensure that their transition to Canford is smooth and enables them to thrive. In addition, Royal SpringBoard provide support to pupils in their home environment during holiday periods.
“Perhaps the most validating statistic is that which Pro-Bono Economics’ recent report on our work found, that “on average, ‘SpringBoarders’ gain the equivalent of 12 months of educational progress.” This analysis was based on just our Sixth Form entry programme cohort – proving how transformative a fully-funded bursary can be for so many”.
