4th European Jazz Conference 2017

www.europejazz.net The European Jazz Conference 2017 is co-organised by Europe Jazz Network (EJN) and Cankarjev dom, producer of the Ljubljana Jazz Festival, the oldest jazz festival in Europe, and is supported by the Ministry of Culture of Slovenia, the City of Ljubljana, European Green Capital and UNESCO City of Literature and by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union. The theme chosen for 2017 Conference is “What if…” The huge challenges of contemporary societies cannot be ignored by cultural and music operators. Jazz and creative music have always been standard-bearers for freedom, justice and human rights. With the Conference of this year we would like to explore how we, as music professionals, can tackle these issues, and how music and creativity can be the vehicle for “looking into the unknown”.

Columbus’ Daughter Alma M. Karlin Cultural-historical and anthropological exhibition Celje-born Alma M. Karlin (1889–1950), globetrotter, writer, amateur explorer, polyglot and theosophist, travelled all over the world between 1919 and 1927. She journeyed alone, for eight uninterrupted years, and earned her own livelihood en route. According to the exhibition curator, the nature of her travels ranks Alma among the greatest travellers of all time. Commemorating the 90th anniversary of Alma’s return from her globetrotting, the exhibition features the objects that Alma collected on her travels and had dispatched

home, including the mysterious figurine of Li Tieguai, to whom she ascribed supernatural powers, Japanese graphic prints, an outstandingly large collection of postcards, photographs, personal belongings and furniture. Many of the exhibits have not enjoyed public presentation before. The showcase includes film footage of interesting and invaluable interviews with informed observers (some of whom knew Alma personally) and two play corners, one for adults and another for children, Alma’s and Thea’s rooms.

The Glembays Ballet of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb Choreographed and directed by: Leo Mujić Music: Ludwig van Beethoven, Sergei Rachmaninov Miroslav Krleža’s most famous drama, The Glembays, first premiered in 1929 in the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, and was an instant success, becoming one of the most performed Krleža’s dramas, both locally and internationally. The ballet production of The Glembays represents a big challenge for the choreographer and his assistants. The story begins with the celebration of the 30th anniversary of the Glembay Bank, in the palace of old Glembay, the head of the family. The entire family reunites after a long time, including the

estranged son Leone, who cannot resist sarcastically narrating the family’s history. When fears of approaching bankruptcy are confirmed, all the long hidden secrets, adulteries, insanity and deceit come out in frenzied scenes that follow each other in a mad tempo, and everything ends in blood. After attending Belgrade’s Ballet School Lujo Davičo, Leo Mujić graduated from L’Ecole-atelier Rudra Béjart in Lausanne and immediately started performing as a very successful soloist in famous European dance theatres. Dedicating himself to choreography, he worked in big European and Croatian ballet theatres. For the Ballet of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, he choreographed The Silence of My Murmur, as well as the extremely popular ballet Anna Karenina.

Slavoj Žižek didn’t hesitate for a moment – he did it with a paradigmatic character from Greek tragedy, Sophocles’ Antigone. Displeased with Antigone’s gesture of burying her brother’s body being mythologised beforehand, Žižek reversed the course of events twice – thus making two attempts to change the twentieth-century social order: the fascistic rule of the masses and the communist rule of class avant-garde. It is precisely by changing diverse sequences of events and their denouements, through temporal hiatuses and logic teasers, that a spectator actually penetrates the complexity of a thought, which never consents to a given reality, but sees every supposed presupposition, even if it concerns anthological and sacred figures, however untouchable they might be, as an opportunity for re-examination and taking an alternative perspective. When making a decision whether it’s harder to be an Antigone-esque rebellious dissident or Creon-esque autocratic ruler, you will soon be left to your own devices. Tristan and Isolde Choreography: Saburo Teshigawara Dancers: Rihoko Sato, Saburo Teshigawara Music: Richard Wagner: Tristan and Isolde (excepts) The timeless myth about Tristan and Isolde based on a Celtic legend was first recorded in the form of episodic poems of the late 12th century. In adapting the tragic story about a destructive passion between knight Tristan and princess Isolde, who is promised in marriage to King Mark of Cornwall, Richard Wagner expressed his yearning for Mathilde Wesendonck. The operatic version was composed between 1854 and 1859, and premiered in Munich in 1865. Tristan and Isolde by Saburo Teshigawara and Rihoko Sato is constructed around excerpts from Wagner’s monumental work, re-imagined as an original music and dance piece. The musical texture of the piece is repetition, stemming from the belief in the fatality of doomed romance, the infinite spiritual and metaphysical bond between the two lovers and the only possible consummation of their (total) love in death. In keeping with the choreographer’s artistic vision, the piece is a poetical journey employing diverse means of expression. Ostensibly lacking in narrative, it gives precedence to the sensual over rational. One of the most successful female singers/ songwriters in Mali and West Africa today, Rokia Traoré will return to Ljubljana only two months after delivering a keynote speech at the European Jazz Conference (see pages 2, 3). The concert will feature the music part of her multi-genre trilogy, Dream Mandé. “My roots are deeply anchored in the Mandingo culture. Yet I wasn’t immersed in Malian music at the source, having spent most of my childhood outside Mali moving with the work of my father who was a diplomat. As a noble Bambara, not belonging to a griot caste prevented me from learning and interpreting traditional griot songs. (...) The Dream Mandé - Bamanan Djourou project is structured around the griot tradition of oral history storytelling. At the same time it is a modern project born out of inevitable changes to the form that can complement the past using contemporary concepts, a vision of contextualised perception that goes against tradition. Slovenian Book Fair Featured countries The first Slovenian book fair was inaugurated 45 ago, in 1972, at the Gospodarsko razstavišče exhibition venue. In 1917, the Nova založba publishing house published an illustrated version of the tale about Martin Krpan, a Slovenian folk hero, with illustrations by Hinko Smrekar. The cover features Krpan holding a club and a butcher’s axe. We have added another weapon, a book. Thus armed, Krpan has become the symbol of this year’s fair. Reading and books have never been as important as today. Books shape us into creative, enterprising and thinking individuals. Promoting reading culture is firmly on the agenda of the fair. Last year we launched a national campaign aimed towards fostering appreciation of literature, Slovenia Reads, to be resumed and intensified this year. Particular attention will be devoted to children with special needs, who will actively contribute to the fair. New programmes for young people are underway. We are introducing graffiti, skate, rap, etc. One of our

featured guests will be Radovljica, while Eisenkappel and Klagenfurt will act as hosts to a programme section. Focus will be placed on the literary scenes of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and their invited authors. As 2017 marks the centennial of the fist Slovenian picture book, the Publishers’ Ceremony will concentrate its attention on this genre. This year, the fair will be inaugurated by Martin Krpan himself. He’ll doubtlessly share a few incisive thoughts, and also reveal his feelings about the book that has been placed under his arm....

New Year’s Eve

Cankarjev dom is an ideal venue for spending the last evening of the year in a merry and festive atmosphere. Although New Year’s Eve is commonly celebrated at evening social gatherings, our centre is illuminated with Christmas lights well into the night, as if wishing to chase away evil spirits that, according to popular myths, haunt people on this night. CD Club is one of the best lookout spots to admire the festive fireworks lighting up the old town of Ljubljana on midnight, scattering thousands of sparkling flowers and stars from the Ljubljana Castle. The halls are thronged by spectators who first attend a cultural event and then gather to welcome the New Year in the majestic Grand Reception Hall or one of CD’s foyers. On Saint Sylvester’s Day we take our leave of the old year, hoping that future might bring us a profusion of 12

beautiful and memorable experiences, wishing happiness to our dear ones and the people in our community. On Old Year’s Day, Gallus Hall will host Romeo and Juliet, an exquisite ballet show by the French dance company Ballet Preljocaj, featuring Prokofiev’s captivating score. The ‘bizarre’ operetta Shockheaded Peter, a production by the Slovene National Theatre Nova Gorica will amuse the audience in Linhart Hall. A great film will be screened in Kosovel Hall, while music delights will be enjoyed at the CD Club. A tea party will be organised at the CD Gallery, where Columbus’ Daughter, an exhibition about a world renowned traveller from Celje, Alma M. Karlin, is on view (see page 4). After the events, the visitors will be able to savour music and culinary treats at the Grand Reception Hall.

Romeo and Juliet Ballet Preljocaj Choreography: Angelin Preljocaj Music: Sergei Prokofiev, Romeo and Juliet Angelin Preljocaj created the choreography based on Prokofiev’s ballet for the Lyon Opera in 1990. Twenty-five years later the piece was restaged by Ballet Preljocaj, a company based in Aix-en-Provence, and has since then toured a range of venues worldwide. When the piece was created Preljocaj was practically unknown on the international dance scene; the unassertive young choreographer first hesitated to accept Lyon Opera’s commission. It was the essence of Shakespeare’s timeless story that impacted his decision to eventually take up the challenge – the limiting influence of power over one of the most essential individual freedoms, the freedom to love. Being of Albanian descent, Preljocaj is the son of political immigrants to France. The marked shift in spatial and temporal dimensions is echoed in the abridged score, and Preljocaj’s radically envisioned choreography. It allows no room for families, for intimacy, but focuses on the confrontation between clans fighting for their territory. The creation nevertheless retains Shakespeare’s iconic balcony scene, the setting for ultimate love, bloody clan wars and tragic fate. Cankar on Cankar While 2017 was dedicated to Leo Tolstoy, a giant of world literature, 2018 will mark the centenary of the death of Ivan Cankar. What is the modern-day perception of his literary legacy? How do we experience his work as primaryschool students? Do his literary worlds echo in our minds also later on? Cankar’s plays are the cornerstone of the repertoire of Slovenian theatres. His dramatic compositions For the Good of the People, Scandal in St Florian Valley, The King of Betajnova and The Serfs touch on universal concerns, addressing topics that have contemporary resonance, and whose characters remain one of the greatest acting challenges in Slovenian literary history. However, do we still read his short novel The House of Mary Our Helper, his Images from Dreams or Erotica? How does literary history,

especially the branches of Slovenian studies and comparative literature, tackle Cankar nowadays? Are his complex lifetime, his worldview and political engagement still subjects of scientific research? The events falling under the Cankar on Cankar Festival aim to address many compelling issues. We shall start with a large-scale theatre co-production, Scandal in St Florian Valley, and conclude with an extensive overview exhibition, to be launched in June. The City Museum of Ljubljana’s show will chronicle the writer’s life and times, and the exhibition at the CD Gallery will focus on the philosophical and literary influences on his work, which testify to the fact that Ivan Cankar is unquestionably a major Central European author whose output reflects the prevailing trends of his time.

Scandal in St Florian Valley Adapted and directed by: Eduard Miler Co-production: SNG Drama Ljubljana, City Theatre Ljubljana, Cankarjev dom The dramatic works of Ivan Cankar display a pervasive theatrical quality, even when not staged but merely read. Regardless of the motifs they treat, the plays are theatrical visualisations written to be performed on stage, and composed especially with viewers in mind. Therefore, the critical reviews of Scandal in St Florian Valley, a farce written in two weeks and premiered that same year (1907), were most unexpected. The staging was criticised for the very aspects that Cankar aimed to avoid. For being uncommunicative, replete with ‘trivialities’, confusing, bereft of dramatic complexity… Despite the tepid reception at the launch, Scandal remains of continuing relevance, also because of the ongoing tension between individual sensitivities and society in present-day reality. How is this tension generated, how broad is its scope at the time of corporate capitalism and online globalisation, do the concepts of freedom and individuality still exist, what is creativity and what is the point of being creative… are just some of the universal themes that make Scandal as immediately relevant as 110 years ago. Ivan Meštrović Corporeality and Eroticism in Sculpture Exhibition Thirty-five years after the first exhibition of small sculptures by Ivan Meštrović at Cankarjev dom the current exposition, adopting an original and elaborate concept and including discrete lighting modulations, offers a new insight into his masterful art. In point of fact, Meštrović’s output has thus far rarely been approached from the perspective of the significance of the naked body, and its erotic readings/ views. The showcase will follow the development of this complex subject in sculptures as well as drawings, made over a longer period of time (1903–46), from the artist’s student days in Vienna until the post-war era. Three curators have explored the subjects of nudity and eroticism in the works of Ivan Meštrović from three different angles with regard to the theme and temporal frame – interpretations that overlap in their approach to the contextual narrative of the show, and are featured in three cogent theses in the catalogue: Uneasiness in the Body (Dalibor Prančević); Between Two Eroses and Two Aphrodites – Classical Conception of Corporeality (Barbara Vujanović); Conflagration of the Senses (Zorana Jurić Šabić). 4th Holistic Health Festival

The 4th Holistic Health Festival has been devised with great attentiveness to detail and with the awareness that each person is responsible for their health and wellbeing. For millennia, people have treated illnesses with herbal or animal-derived remedies, using knowledge handed down through generations. As modern man can benefit from this ancient knowledge, the Festival will focus on traditional Chinese and Indian (Ayurveda) medicines as well

as European homeopathy, which stems from Ancient Greece and Hippocrates. In cooperation with experts, doctors, pharmacists and biologists, this year’s three-day Festival will again feature lectures, round tables, workshops, open-stage presentations and a trade exhibition. The central theme in 2017 is the importance of food as a nutrient and medicament; how it affects our health and how illnesses can occur through unhealthy diet.

Docomomo (DOcumentation and COnservation of MOdern MOvement) is an international non-profit organisation bringing together more than 70 countries from all over the world in studying, renovating and promoting the Modern Movement architecture of the 20th century. The organisation, which will celebrate its 30th anniversary in Ljubljana, comprises architects, historians, conservationists, civil engineers and other construction specialists, landscape architects, designers, planners, sociologists and many other professionals dealing with the issues and the destiny of the twentieth-century Modern Movement architecture, cities and landscape. The central theme,

Metamorphosis – Continuity of Change, addresses the issues of documentation and safeguarding of twentieth-century architectural heritage. Conservation and re-use of buildings and sites of Modern Movement are of crucial importance. Equally important, especially for small countries like Slovenia, are the issues of regional distinctiveness related to identity and a specific architectural idiom. This distinctive language, whose main protagonists are architects Jože Plečnik and Edvard Ravnikar, finds its expression in the characteristics which evolved throughout the 20th century and are based on Slovenian natural and cultural assets.

Bi Flamenco Flamenco festival

Flamenco is bursting with life – as a genre, or a category of artistic composition, and as a way of life. Far from being satisfied by only performing ossified and rigidly antiquated music and dance forms, flamenco artists are reinventers. Flamenco is a flux saturating and being saturated by contemporary arts and related disciplines. Bi Flamenco, a festival blending tradition and modern-day sensitivity, will share insight into this vibrant culture. Classical instruments enhanced by electronica, classical flamenco steps combined with contemporary dance beats, and Mediterranean temperament meeting African and Arabic rhythms.

The Festival’s central guest is dancer and choreographer Rocío Molina, flamenco’s greatest star and iconic figure. Also featured will be young and budding dancers Sara Cano and Ana Morales. Featured flamenco bands: Diego Carrasco Family Band and a jazz flamenco phenomenon, Alfonso Aroca Quintet. While a project by Slovenian flamenco artist, Ana Pandur, will receive its premiere, the festival will also be complemented by film screenings, dance workshops, talks with artists and get-togethers at the CD Club. The project that has rocketed Rocío Molina into flamenco stardom addresses subjects uncharacteristic of this dance genre. Issues such as examination of sexual roles, the question of femininity and deliberate rejection of stereotypes are not typically explored by flamenco dancers. But when they are, they reverberate all the more provocatively and passionately. Utilising her body as the focal point, Rocío displays similar energy. Radically defying aesthetic conventions, the Spanish dancer is disciplined, effortlessly blending genres and informing them with the legacy of the greatest performing artists. Despite her young age Molina is an iconic figure

on the vibrant flamenco scene. There are several factors that have contributed to her meteoric rise to fame, but freedom and seamless integration of diverse elements are the key dimensions that together with technical prowess, intrepid artistry and engaged stance combine to create a unique artist. Cultural Bazaar Presentation of culture

Organised jointly by the Ministry of Culture, Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, and Institute of Education of RS and several partners, the oneday event whose executive producer is Cankarjev dom is celebrating its tenth anniversary. The main aim of the Cultural Bazaar project is to provide information on cultural and artistic events taking place throughout Slovenia and stimulate interest in the arts education and culture at large in the professional and general public. The key feature of the project is a full-day professional training intended for a broad range of professionals. Cultural Bazaar is open also to the general

public – to students, children and the young people as well as culture and arts education enthusiasts. The jubilee bazaar will include a variegated programme of lectures, presentations and workshops. While the event’s central theme is the European Year of Cultural Heritage, special attention will also be focused on the Year of Ivan Cankar and inter-generational integration. Full Moon/Lux Tenebris/Wildebeest Sydney Dance Company Choreography: Cheng Tsung-Lung, Rafael Bonachela, Gabrielle Nankivell Cheng Tsung-Lung’s Full Moon aims at exploring the issue in the centre of the dancer’s and the viewer’s interest – the intangible point at which man has exited the animal realm but keeps being pulled back involuntarily, driven by overpowering natural instincts. Rafael Bonachela’s Lux Tenebris journeys through the world of light and darkness, exploring visible and invisible phenomena, penetrating the mysteries of the physical and the audible. An etude consciously defying the tenets of classical ballet vocabulary, Lux effortlessly blends elements of

various stylistic periods. Wildebeest by Gabrielle Nankivell opens with a solo. The dancer is given fluid movements with limbs that are half human, half bestial. Primordial and verging on mythical, like the image of a wild animal that slowly emerges from the background. From the opening solo the work proceeds through a series of further solos, duets, trios and quartets, against the pack-like, wild and wilful movement. The backdrop of elusive soundscapes invests the etude with indefinable temporal and spatial dimensions.

We hope that the Appeal of Wood event will strengthen our shared passion for wood and firmly recognise wood as an ecofriendly and renewable biomaterial for a sustainable future. This musical play by the cult London group The Tiger Lillies is an adaptation of the world renowned children’s picture book Shockheaded Peter (Struwwelpeter, 1845) by the German psychiatrist, poet and writer Heinrich Hoffmann. The ‘junk-opera,’ as the authors themselves called it, was first shown in London in 1998, followed by stagings all over the world, from Broadway to the Burgtheater in Vienna. It also won a number of awards, including the most important one, the Olivier Award for Best Entertainment (2002). The bizarre

stories speak about children’s bad behaviour and its potential dangerous consequences. A child who won’t eat keeps losing weight until he dies; another one who doesn’t watch his step falls into the water and nearly drowns... This unusual play, aimed at adults and young people, enthrals with its grotesque-morbid intensification of well-known stories and dark humour, and promises a rewarding theatre experience. Cankar on Cankar Festival

Ivan Cankar Large retrospective exhibition marking the centenary of the writer’s death The year of Ivan Cankar will be commemorated in cooperation with the Museums and Galleries of Ljubljana by organising exhibitions at two venues. Our partners in this ambitious project are the National and University Library and the Slovenian Theatre Institute that will provide their museum collections, archival materials and scientific expertise. While the exhibition held at the City Museum of Ljubljana will focus on the historical context of the writer’s time, the show at Cankarjev dom will centre on his fiction and plays; featuring diverse visual media and concise accompanying texts, the exhibition will aim to demonstrate Cankar’s excellence, his universal, superb aesthetics and remarkable breadth of vision transpiring from his dramas and prose works. Running parallel with the metaphorical level, the theoretical perspective will deal with the influences on his works and accentuate Cankar’s contemporary relevance – his works touching on supratemporal concerns, and being comparable in terms of themes and style with his European contemporaries. Also touched upon will be contemporary and later-day reviews and interpretations of his works.

Ivan Cankar... and His Justice The ostensibly simple novella The Servant Jernej and His Justice is a crystallised manifestation of Cankar’s artistry. With an elaborate narrative structure, the novella reflects on social issues and examines the moral condition of an individual faced with the sobering administration of justice, while the work’s hypersensitive poetical language provides it with an added aesthetical merit. Foregrounding poetic expression, the exhibition renders a visualisation of all the above-mentioned premises. Its concept is one of a labyrinth with seven stations on Jernej’s Way of the Cross, which will additionally serve as the dramaturgical concept for the subsequent theatre staging. The guided tours are a live spoken rendition of the text featuring actors who will portray the characters in the staging. Tracing the Steps of Maya with Advanced Technology Lecture

While conducting archaeological terrain surveys in the heart of the Yucatan Peninsula for a number of years, Dr Šprajc has this year continued his exploration in the Mexican State of Campeche, in the northern part of the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, where between 2013 and 2014 his team discovered three Maya cities, Chactún, Tamchén and Lagunita. The archaeological field survey was conducted with one of the most efficient remote sensing techniques.
