A Word of Introduction
Living with Cankar It pleases me immensely when strangers approach me in the street, to confess that they simply cannot imagine living without Cankarjev dom. Such encounters are not rare. A nice lady has recently confided in me that she and her husband had attended at least a thousand events in our centre and plan on remaining our loyal visitors also in future. She also revealed that Cankarjev dom played an important part in their lives. Visitors love to frequent our centre, attending artistic performances, congresses and social evenings, and most recently coming to sit beneath the shady trees of the Council of Europe Park and, reclining on the grass, clear their minds of stress for a brief spell. Cankarjev dom is a truly amazing hub of discoveries, emotions, experiences. Over two thousand events are programmed each season, catering for the needs of all generations, lovers of the unknown and adherents of the classical. We welcome everyone with open hands, especially appreciating feedback from the patrons who entrust us with their thoughts: how our shows – being etched on their memories forever – touched, changed or astonished them. Our centre not only welcomes visitors from Ljubljana, Slovenia and, ultimately, from all over the world; it serves as a platform for encounters between the past and the present, a platform for myriad discoveries and opinions, findings and endeavours of artists, experts and scientists sharing a similar goal: to penetrate deeper into the mystery of their pursuit. Programming the forthcoming season has been a true challenge and inspiration, as well as a pleasure. Proudly announcing CD’s 2018/19 programme, we sincerely hope that it will also become an indispensable part of your lives.

Cankar on Cankar Festival Until 28 February 2019
Ivan Cankar and Europe From Shakespeare to Kafka An exhibition dedicated to Cankar’s literary legacy, Ivan Cankar and Europe not only commemorates his anniversary but also examines the writer’s art by means of an analysis of influences and interpretations, and juxtaposition with contemporary European writers. It offers an insight into his oeuvre against the European background – how Cankar was integrated into European spiritual tradition, how his work was affected by European thinkers Plato, Karl Marx and Nietzsche, and artists ranging from Shakespeare and Cervantes to Ibsen and Zola. And, especially, how his output relates to those by his European contemporaries, from Thomas Mann to Franz Kafka. It is particularly this context that serves to reveal the great originality of Cankar’s literature, based in Slovenian moral and social traditions. The visually elaborate architectural and graphic layout, supported by audio-visual media, installation art and diverse visual highlights, offers a vivid account of Cankar’s excellence, his overall exquisite aesthetic and artistic vision. In cooperation with the Museums and Galleries of Ljubljana, the National and University Library and the Slovenian Theatre Institute. Additional exhibits have been loaned by Antikvariat Glavan, the National Gallery of Slovenia, the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts and the Slovenian Film Centre.

34th Slovenian Book Fair
Chrysanthemum on Every Stand In the Year of Ivan Cankar, commemorating the centenary of the writer’s death, Slovenian Book Fair will lend a new insight, from various viewpoints, into the grandeur of Cankar’s literary output. Apart from displaying over 20,000 books, the fair’s stands and stages will be adorned with chrysanthemums – in memory of the intrepid revolutionary and as a reverent acknowledgement of his creativity. The Writers’ Stage will mark the 70th anniversary of Drago Jančar, an award-winning contemporary Slovenian author whose works have been translated into several languages. This year’s focus country is Hungary. In the year of Miroslav Vilhar, Ljubljana will host the city of Postojna, while some of the fair’s programme will be featured off-site, in Radovljica. A new addition to the fair is the Cicifest scholarly programme, organised in cooperation with the Faculty of Education Ljubljana. A great deal of attention has thus far been dedicated to children with special needs; this year we are devoting even more time and space especially to them. Furthermore, prominence will be given to young people’s programme at the very heart of the fair, the Debate Café. Publishing Academy will focus on evaluating young-adult literature in international arena, also as a response to the current Slovenian situation. Every day at 5pm, the Forum will feature illustrators, spotlighting their books and images. Over five days and a half (the fair has been prolonged for 12 hours!) almost three hundred events will take place on CD’s six venues. Cankarjev dom premises admission free

Znanost in tehnologija antične Grčije Europeans virtually grow up with ancient Greek mythology, epic poetry, lyric poetry, drama, and tega philosophy. In this regard we are the children of ancient Greeks. K uresničitvi ambicioznega projekta, ki obravnava razNevertheless, ........ an exhibition offering a penetrating insight into the lesser known ancient Greek science and technology will not fail to amaze us. A thematically rich exhibition, Idea: Ancient Greek Science and Technology will form the core of the Mt Olympus Festival and constitute a link connecting diverse festival events, including artistic performances. One of the featured exhibits will be a prototype of the Antikythera mechanism, an exceptionally rare and highly complex ancient Greek mechanism, discovered in 1902 among the wreckage retrieved from a Roman-era shipwreck off the coast of the Greek island of Antikythera, 42 metres below sea level. This ancient bronze analogue computer, housed in a surprisingly thin 33-centimetre high, 17-centimetre wide and 9-centimetre long wooden box has been dated to c. 150– 100 BC. The device was used to predict astronomical positions and eclipses for astrological purposes, serving as a 365-day calendar that included leap years, and as a solar and lunar calendar that indicated solar and lunar eclipses. It was also a precursor of the modern-day almanac, containing zodiac dial characters that marked the locations of longitudes on the ecliptic for specific stars. If believing that we have a fairly sound knowledge of Aristotle, Plato, Homer and Sophocles, we are doubtlessly less familiar with Ctesibius, ‘the father of pneumatics’, purportedly a miserably poor inventor and author of the first scientific treatise on the science of compressed air. A prototype of his clepsydra, a water clock invented in 270 BC, will also be on show. It is interesting to note that it measured time more accurately than any of the timepieces invented before the 17th century. Works by present-day artists featured at the festival will seek to reflect ancient Greek resourcefulness and harmony.

Idea
Ancient Greek Science and Technology In realising this ambitious project, showcasing important fields of science and arts, as well as technological achievements in the ancient Greek world, the Science Centre and Technology Museum Noesis in Thessaloniki has joined hands with some of the most prominent contemporary Greek scientists who conduct research into the relevance and far-reaching role of ancient Greek science and technology in the development of Western civilisation. The exhibition also provides a platform for documenting, studying and presenting the vast reservoir of technical knowledge acquired during the centuries of continuous Greek prosperity and development. This knowledge radically changed human life in several areas: from food production and consumption, clothing and life circumstances to science and culture. Some of the most compelling showcased technical areas include architecture and construction technology, mathematics or geometry, mechanics and the Archimedes’ screw, telecommunications and hydraulic telegraph, astronomy and the famous mechanism from the island of Antikythera, automata and mobile automatic theatre, as well as music with a hydraulis or water organ. In addition to explanatory texts and pictorial materials, the exhibition includes 3D-animations, interactive didactic applications, as well as scale models and replicas of ancient instruments. In order to be able to articulate such a profound rethinking of opera and yet connect it to the roots of the opera as an art-form, the Mecatronica team has chosen to focus on the artist that embodied such an approach to operatic performance – the mythical Greek soprano Maria Callas. Midori, violin Özgür Aydin, piano
Programme: W. A. Mozart, C. Franck, F. Schubert, O. Respighi All music connoisseurs know the story about an eleven-year-old child prodigy who debuted under the baton of the illustrious Zubin Mehta and developed into a leading violinist of our time. If musical perfection can be said to exist, it is found in Midori’s playing. Unwaveringly dedicated to the idea of pure musical expression, Midori pursues the path of a sought-after concert artist and visionary teacher. She encourages underprivileged children in New York and Japan to obtain a musical education and is actively engaged in charity appeals. Midori’s recurrent chamber partner is Turkish-American pianist Özgür Aydin, who has enchanted the critics and audiences alike with his supple playing, splendid touch and refined taste. The two astounding artists share their love of diversified repertoire and the desire for conveying deeply felt expressivity. Their music-making is utterly compelling, and the finely balanced interplay of instruments virtually unparalleled.

The Stone Series @ Cankarjevi torki Curated by John Zorn In 2005, John Zorn launched The Stone, a club that does not charge commission or aims at generating profit. The Stone has a single goal: to present various types and styles of avant-garde and experimental music. The entire income from the sale of tickets goes to the musicians. After 13 years, the Stone changed its address. Moreover, The Stone is coming to Europe for the first time! To start the European Stone Odyssey, John Zorn will mark his 65th birthday by choosing some of his most compelling works from his ample catalogue. The Stone in Europe will continue in 2019. Some of the most exciting musicians of our times will play their original repertoire. The Stone in Europe Series is organised within the Independent Touring Network, an unstable network of European promoters.

Love Chapter 2
L-E-V Dance Company Creator: Sharon Eyal; Co-creator: Gai Behar; Music: Ori Lichtik No ballet slippers, just black socks. Six dancers, three men and three women, slide across the stage in different formations. Invariably, it is the woman that sets the pace, establishing relationships, the male bodies adapt and follow. The relationships never end in a duet, a point everyone continues to veer towards but never actually reaches. It soon transpires that Love Chapter 2 is a take on loneliness, absence of love, lack of happiness and longing for intimacy. The more the dancers seek love, the more obsessively, aggressively and passionately they try to get hold of it, the less likelihood – and less hope – there is of ever finding it. The dancers, possessing technical brilliance and signature artistic style, make light work of the hour-long tour de force. Flaring up like the pain of the unattainable, the dancers’ choreographic lexicon escalates, governed by a metronomically precise musical matrix. Only to be cut short at the culminating point, the point of no return, by – a stage curtain. Gallus Hall €16, 18, 22, 26, 13*

Dança Sinfônica, Gira
Grupo Corpo Choreography: Rodrigo Pederneiras; Music: Marco Antônio Guimarães, Metá Metá 2015 marked the 40th anniversary of Grupo Corpo, a legendary Brazilian dance company. Created to celebrate this special occasion by Grupo Corpo’s current artistic director, Paulo Pederneiras, Dança Sinfônica combines musical passages from ballets recently produced by Grupo Corpo with a variety of choreographic elements that have over the past four decades become the group’s trademark. Revisiting the best works from Grupo Corpo’s entire repertoire, Pederneiras’ Dança Sinfônica is a synthesis of the group’s rich, compelling and distinctive choreographic scripture. Blending ‘historical elements’, Paulo Pederneiras, whose residence with the company spans a period of over thirty years, thus created a fresh, innovative and gripping show, a visual and musical treat, which fully satisfies our craving for South American cultural delicacies. Gira, the group’s latest production, is sheer delight. Echoing Brazil’s cultural heterogeneity – being a melting pot of hundreds, if not thousands, of races, peoples and cultures that have socially assimilated throughout the centuries of coexisting, Gira reflects the vibrant diversity of Brazil’s dance and music scenes. Gira is an overview of Brazil’s popular music, a recapitulation of Latin America’s basic dance steps, of dances whose popularity has spread throughout the world. Its invigorating dance and music, and varicoloured set and costume design, provide a veritable instruction book on the joy of living. Gallus Hall €17, 21, 25, 28, 14*

Humans
Circa Contemporary Circus Creation: Yaron Lifschitz, Circa Ensemble; Directed by: Yaron Lifschitz; Technical Director: Jason Organ On the cutting edge of contemporary circus, Circa, based in Brisbane, Australia, assigns the main role to humans. Dispensing with props, dazzling set design and renouncing animals, Circa’s cast includes exclusively people. Blending dance, acrobatics and circus elements, a team of highly skilled acrobats test their powers of endurance and perform remarkable feats of strength. Fusing extreme physicality, consummate acrobatic skills and dance choreography, Humans delves into the mysteries of human body, its limitations, its beauty and transience. A gripping piece of physical poetry, Humans reminds us that human body is one of the most beautiful, most powerful, but most vulnerable organisms in the world. It is a spectacle driven by inventiveness, the human body and ways of transcending physical barriers. A spectacle of raw corporeality in the service of imagination and art. Death in Venice
Ballet of the Slovenian National Theatre Maribor, Ballet of the Croatian National Theatre Zagreb Choreography, concept: Valentina Turcu based on T. Mann’s eponymous novella; Music: Gustav Mahler Thomas Mann termed his novella Death in Venice as a “tragedy of degradation”, a degradation shared by numerous aesthetes and modernist artist during the fin de siècle (Oscar Wilde), and rendered even more poignant today, in a debased world of reality shows and narcissistic hyperproduction of tweets and selfies, which – paradoxically – distance us from each other even more palpably. In radically investigating the contrasts in movement, the differences between the etheric elegance of Tadzio and the inner pessimistic turmoil of Gustav Aschenbach – an artist on a quest for beauty, internationally acknowledged choreographer Valentina Turcu aims to create “a perpetual movement of the soul”, that is, she seeks to illuminate the multifaceted aspects of an aged artist’s emotional odyssey – an artist worn out by the search for spiritual fulfilment in beauty, who has ended up on the dark side of life, dying a living death in a sinking city plagued by an unnamed epidemic. Appearance / Disappearance
The creative duo leading the Marseille ballet ensemble and ICK Amsterdam, Emio Greco and Pieter C. Sholten, is returning to Cankarjev dom with a duo of thematically linked and coherent projects that will be presented as a double-bill exclusively in Ljubljana! Kindertotenlieder (Songs on the Death of Children), poems written by Friedrich Rückert (in an outpouring of grief following the death of two of his children), were set to music as a song cycle by Gustav Mahler. Appearance addresses the issues of youth, youthful naivety, the brevity and transience of childhood, conducting its exploration with great originality – combining a professional dance ensemble, video images and live music accompaniment with a children’s choir. Disappearance deals with impermanence, with mortality. The voices that radiated life in Appearance, are now emerging merely as remembrances, as pictures – images of things past, and reminiscences. Although bodies are still here, adult, mature, strong, they are already marked by signs of aging and decay. And it is this process that focuses on reviving memories, which can be perpetually preserved by means of advanced technology – projection –, and on spotlighting the real-life bodies of twenty consummately skilled dancers struggling to keep the images alive and searching for the irrevocably lost time. A Love Supreme
Rosas Choreography: Salva Sanchis, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker; Music: John Coltrane, A Love Supreme; Co-production: De Munt/La Monnaie A Love Supreme, a dance quartet created by Salva Sanchis and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, is based on John Coltrane’s eponymous album. On A Love Supreme, Coltrane and his musicians, pianist McCoy Tyner, double bassist Jimmy Garrison and drummer Elvin Jones, deployed a compelling and deceptively simple musical structure to allow for complete freedom of improvisation, continuously pushing the boundaries of every musical register. This freedom of creation, i.e. improvisation, allows an entrancing and literal translation into dance: for this performance, the choreographers took on the challenge of blending improvisation and composition into a seamless choreographic whole. The energetic dance interpretation embodies and mirrors the continued vitality of Coltrane’s music, whilst heralding the freedom and choreographic challenge provided by music. Gypsy, yet so Beautiful
Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb Directed by: Ivica Buljan; Text by: Kristian Novak; Stage adaptation: Ivor Martinić Young Roma Sandokan falls in love with Milena, a ‘white’ woman from Medimurje. In her late forties and wrongfully dismissed from her job, Milena returns to her native village of Sabolščak to care for her headstrong grandfather. Nuzat, a Kurd from Mosul, leaves his family and flees a war-ravaged country to lead a quiet existence in Calais. Plančić, a PR officer working for the Zagreb police directorate, is assigned field work to cover up a murder that could incite violence and cause a major political scandal. All these anti-heroes are not typical representatives of ethnic or social groups; they are noble people on the margins of society who do not fit the common stereotypes and empathically dispel the preconceived notions people have of them. The characters’ paths branch off and ultimately unite around a savage murder. Novak’s novel and its stage adaptation directed by Ivica Buljan offer a complex social and emotional representation of diverse identities. The adaptation follows the writer’s elaborate style, incorporating elements of crime story, melodrama, documentary materials, social drama and pop (sub)culture, which includes songs of the Roma. Einstein’s Dreams
Yugoslav Drama Theatre Directed by: Slobodan Unkovski; Stage adaptation: Rusomir Bogdanovski The novel by American physicist and writer Alan Lightman is a collage of poetic vignettes, featuring exquisite verbal texture and rich imaginary world. The novel fictionalises Einstein as a young scientist troubled by dreams as he works on his theory of relativity. A sheer theatrical delight, the performance gives an impression of being visualised poetry and a 120-minute fantastical journey in time. Accidental Death of an Anarchist
Yugoslav Drama Theatre Directed by: Maja Maletković In a little more than an hour, which simply flies by, the Yugoslav Drama Theatre’s young, accomplished acting ensemble – led by brilliant Nikola Đuričko – reveals all the inconsistencies surrounding the death of an anarchist. Under a guise of comedy lurks the world of organised crime, official corruption, political liquidations, religious hatred… It sounds awfully familiar, even though the text by Nobel laureate Dario Fo was written as early as in 1971. A continuation and a comprehensive enhancement of the principles and postulates applied by Slovak dancer and choreographer Milan Tomášik and his team to Hunting Season (2014) and Silver Blue (2015); Fight Bright thus completes the choregraphic trilogy. A project by: Petra Govc, Matija Vastl; With the participation of: Petra Hazabent, Suzana Koncut, Mojca Medvedšek, Tatjana Stanič, Iztok Vadnjal, Sara Smrajc Žnidarčič; Production: Malabar, Cankarjev dom The plays of Marguerite Duras, whose literary and cinematic output profoundly shaped the French cultural landscape after WWII, exhibit masterfully conveyed intimacies and moods. The play La musica II (1985) is an adaptation of Musica (1965), a composition Duras reworked two decades later in order “to revisit and put an edge on the despair over the separation of two people who once loved each other.” CD Club 52

Bent
Directed by: Alen Jelen; Production: Ĺ KUC Association, Cankarjev dom
Less than 25 years ago, Sherman’s play (1979), revolving around the issue of homosexuality in Third Reich, was shunned by all institutional theatres. The time for an examination of such issues was simply not ripe in Slovenia. Today, the story about the persecution of gays in Nazi Germany has better chances of being staged institutionally. Nevertheless, current theatre repertoires reveal that works addressing such specific, marginal issues are still sparsely programmed. The play remains of relevance today, at a time of rising right-wing extremism and Nazism. The production fuses elements of drama, sound and video. Kosovel Hall 53

Oleanna
The two-character play by David Mamet addresses the touchy subject of sexual abuse. Premiered in the US in 1992 and a year later at London’s Royal Court Theatre, the play immediately became a runaway success. Intricately woven dialogues, unexpected turns, lucid analysis of social realities and in-depth psychological portraits are the defining characteristics and qualities of Mamet’s text. Štih Hall

An orchestra without musicians, a dance ensemble without dancers. We’re facing a void. Global capitalism, administrative procedures, a war without end and without battles. Logistics predominates. What tears us away from what we love to engage in what we don’t love? Let’s pull the rug out from under totalitarian regime, let’s set radar clutters to interfere with definitions of the general, so that we might reinvent the singular and the collective. 13th Slovenian Biennial of Illustration A central overview of Slovenian illustration, the Biennial unites older and younger generations of illustrators employing diverse artistic methods and rewards their finest achievements with the Hinko Smrekar Award, as well as the Smrekar distinctions and accolades. Maintaining high standards of creativity and testifying to the excellence of Slovenian illustration, the event showcases the latest artistic methods and techniques employed in illustration: re-imagined painting techniques, illustration incorporating elements of film, comic strip, animated film, electronic media and other advanced technologies. The show thus provides an invaluable platform for recognising the importance of illustration, an artform decisively co-shaping – in its major children’s book segment – the visual perception and understanding of young readers, and having a responsible role in education – as a pictorial language co-creating human consciousness and crucially influencing mental development. Architect Andrej Hrausky thus commented on the photos selected for the CD exhibition: “Žalar travels to experience other cultures, people and environments. Being an architect, he primarily takes photos of architecture, which provides a backdrop for living rather than being life itself – furnishing a stage on which life takes place. Like cinema and theatre, where scenery represents the location of a scene, architecture creates life’s settings and atmospheres that enable human activity.” 2Z8A3230.CR2

Ljubljanica Acclaimed Ljubljana-based photojournalist lives on the outskirts of the Ljubljana Marshes, and devotes his free time to meditative trips along the banks of the Ljubljanica River, taking photos of pristine and unspoilt nature, spots only accessible by boat. A story about a river thus began to emerge, a narrative abounding in myths and legends. Velikonja gradually accumulated an extraordinary body of work, black-and-white photographs documenting different parts of the day, capturing reflections, shadows, flickering light and descending mists. He followed the waterway to populated places, all the way to the city centre, Plečnik’s bridges and marketplace. 2Z8A3231.CR2 1

Limits of Freedom – Surmountable Walls An artist who has held several national and international exhibitions and whose series of photos is kept at the celebrated National Library of France in Paris, Bogataj has a wealth of experience in photography. On a commission from PEN International, Bogataj covered the 50th International Jennifer Clement, President of PEN International, and Writers’ Meeting in Bled, attended by eighty Malick Diarra, Vice-President of PEN France international guests. As an accomplished portrait artist, he surpassed mere documentariness and captured the true spirit of the conference: friendship, longing, hope, as well as the importance of addressing major challenges that our world is facing today. Subterranean Worlds A keen explorer of the underground world, Gedei has pursued cave photography since the early 1990s, achieving world-renown as a major cave photographer. Involving absence of light, cave photography is a challenging pursuit. Photographers must thus think creatively about ways to illuminate the dark caverns. Artworks of great power, Gedei’s photographs reveal the artist’s extensive experience and a heightened sense of space, light and aesthetic. A blank canvas on which one paints with light, cave photography requires a full application of one’s abilities and resources but is well worth the effort. Small Gallery admission free
