Canada and California will remain as cannabis leaders running on parallel but distinct regulatory and supply-chain paths for the foreseeable future. It will be important for operators looking to expand to keep tabs on each market’s threats and opportunities and use those learnings to cross borders.

Labour shortages have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 global pandemic, making it even more difficult for employers to fill open positions. At the same time, the cannabis industry is booming and consumers are expecting quality products, quickly.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Back to (the New) Normal By David Halpert

I

t has been a long 18 months, and I promise that this will be the last time I mention the COVID-19 pandemic in an editor’s letter. At the time of this writing vaccination rates are at an all-time high and are poised to go higher in the weeks to come. Roughly 80% of the Canadian population has at least one dose of a vaccine, with just over 70% of the eligible population fully vaccinated. While there’s no certainty that we’ll head into future lockdowns, Canadians remain vigilant in their efforts to limit the spread the virus as local businesses open up once again and Canadians go back to some semblance of normal. Unlike our neighbours to the south, who’ve largely politicized vaccinations, there’s a real opportunity here for Canada to achieve some type of herd immunity, barring any new variants that might come into play (knock on wood!). While for some, the return to normal will be more gradual, for others it’s a welcome change of pace. One of the biggest changes will be the return of cannabis events this fall, which for a lot of manufacturers and serviceoriented companies, remain the lifeblood of the industry, a chance to reconnect with likeminded colleagues as well as make connections with new potential prospects. If you live within southern Ontario you have to constantly remind yourself that cannabis businesses come from coast to coast to attend these events, and vice versa. For me it’s a double-edged sword, while events act as competition between my publication and other companies’ marketing dollars, just as vital is that these events are a chance for me to reconnect with my many writers, vendors, advertisers, etc. as well as an opportunity to get a better sense of

what’s happening at the ground-level when it comes to cannabis, putting a finger on the pulse so thus speak. Of course with businesses allowed for greater capacities, cannabis retailers can allow for greater walk-in traffic, and with that more sales. Similarly, licensed producers, which in most Canadian jurisdictions have largely been exempted as an essential service, are going back to business as usual in terms of in-house and off-site operations (cannabis retailers were also considered essential services). Now nearly three years since the Cannabis Act has been passed into law, it’ll still be a while before we see the lasting effects on the cannabis industry as restrictions loosen month to month. Paradoxically, there are more cannabis retail stores now than there have every been, roughly 2,500 across Canada, and while it’ll still be some time before we see if sales have been affected, not just in the amount of units purchased but also whether more or less are purchased through brick-and-mortar retailers over online vendors, I can’t help but wonder whether the reasons for purchasing cannabis might change as well, with cases of social anxiety and general anxiety in the months likely on the rise. Either way, it’s a breath of fresh air to see things getting back to normal, even if it’s a new normal.

Houseplant and Canopy Growth to Conclude Their Strategic Relationship in Canada After three years of a successful joint venture, Houseplant and Canopy Growth Corporation have mutually agreed to end their relationship. The Canadian cannabis market has evolved substantially during this period and the parties believe the time is right for the Houseplant brand to develop independently while Canopy advances its focus on wholly-owned brands for the Canadian market. The relationship between Houseplant and Canopy started in 2018, well ahead of Canadian legalization. Since that time, Houseplant and Canopy worked together to pave the way in defining a premium cannabis experience in a new market. During the course of their relationship, Houseplant has become a popular consumer brand in Canada and is a top 10 brand in the premium cannabis market in Ontario. Beverages are a highlight of the brand’s success, with Houseplant Grapefruit notably attaining the top-selling cannabis beverage spot in Canada (measured by units sold) in its launch year. More than one million cans of Houseplant beverages were sold in Canada within the last year.

The Confluence of Cannabis-Infused Products in California and Canada

C

alifornia and Canada have much to learn from one another as both legal cannabis markets grow and mature. While California has had a nearly two-decade head start to develop, manufacture and experiment with cannabis-infused products, the support of federal legalization in Canada has allowed manufacturers there to bring these products up to the scale and sophistication of other CPG industries. Canada and California will remain cannabis leaders running on parallel but distinct regulatory and supply-chain paths for the foreseeable future. It will be important for operators looking to expand to keep tabs on each market’s threats and opportunities and use those learnings to cross borders. As a California cannabis infusion company, Vertosa was born in the world’s largest legal cannabis market. We have also spent the last year integrating into the Canadian cannabis marketplace, helping brands accelerate infused products to market and offering our insights into the ever-evolving confluence of Canada and California cannabis. California Innovation California has a robust legacy market. With grow-friendly climates and multi-generational cannabis farms and cultivators, the Compassionate Use Act of 1996 and all the regulations since, as well as the diverse culture to accompany it all, California cannabis has a world-renowned and layered history. These elements have helped California lead the way in cannabis innovation, especially with respect to infused products. Going back for many years, one could walk

12

By Michael Torrey, VP of Expansion into a California dispensary and consider a wide selection of gummies, cookies, brownies and other common ingestibles, however the earliest days of legalization and medical-only allowances had minimal research and testing capabilities, and the regulations surrounding cannabis products were limited at best. While the new frontier provided the opportunity for a market to be born from almost nothing, it also bred significant uncertainty in the quality, consistency and reliability of products. With few capabilities and measures to ensure that a product was dosed with any specific accuracy or remained stable over time, consumers were left to try products without much certainty in its effect. One beneficial side effect of the trial-and-error approach of the infused product marketplace in California has been the opportunity for innovation. As the market has matured, California manufacturers have developed many unique form factors, extraction methods and ways to ingest. The list of ingestible products that have hit the market is exhaustive, including mints, mouth sprays, hot sauce, popsicles, peanut butter, honey and so much more. Throughout the ever-changing regulatory landscape, regulations and regulators have evolved alongside the rest of the market. California operators have had to remain nimble, all the while focusing on innovative packaging design, eye-catching branding and distinct messaging to capture the interest of consumers. As California continues to lead in cannabis product evolution, operators will need to push the boundaries and find ways to differentiate through innovation. At Vertosa, we hear every day from

Cannabis Prospect Magazine | September 2021

both legacy and newcomer cannabis operators about the importance of product differentiation, specifically through fast-acting technologies that cater to designed experiences. Consumers want products with targeted effects, whether it be sleep, energy, anxiety relief or pain management. And they don’t want to wait an hour to feel it. Furthermore, operators are focusing on the inclusion of targeted minor cannabinoids, full-spectrum strain profiles and unique flavour and functional ingredient combinations. Canadian brands and manufacturers can certainly look to these evolutions in California to guide them in decision-making in the Canadian market. That said, still operating without federal legalization, the California market has struggled to push cannabis into a mainstream, fully legitimized industry. Until federal legalization, the state will continue to operate with a few handicaps, and that’s where the opportunity for Canada to fill in the gaps is greatest. Canadian Quality, Sophistication and Scale While California has led the way in product innovation, Canada has leapfrogged the world in industry and manufacturer sophistication. Federal support has paved the way for necessary research in Canada. With the growing number of Canadian contract research organizations specializing in cannabis and many universities offering cannabis-related programs, Canada has provided significant contributions and studies to push the industry forward. In California, if not all US states,

CALIFORNIA & CANADA

it can still be prohibitively difficult to engage in licensed, sophisticated product and experience research to the detriment of both brands and consumers. This presents an attractive opportunity for Canada to recognize and acknowledge the grassroots developments made in California and apply them into a sophisticated analytical environment, validating or invalidating product claims, and providing value to the consumer. It’s also worth mentioning that Canadian cannabis companies are able to transact much easier due to the relative lack of banking restrictions for the cannabis sector. In California, fully compliant operators are still using ambiguous entity names for their bank accounts, dealing with large amounts of cash, and generally dedicating significant efforts to keep their bank accounts from being shut down. In Canada, cannabis companies have fewer problems relying on the same banking system that supports their mainstream peers. Additionally, federal legalization has allowed Health Canada to develop, implement and enforce robust safety and quality standards and apply them to the cannabis industry with significant effect. In many instances, Health Canada directly borrows many of its cannabis safety and quality policies from the food-and-beverage manufacturing sector. Health Canada has clear and robust regulations to manage all aspects of the supply chain and manufacturing process, from ingredients and equipment to processing methods and distribution. These inherently prevent low-quality operators from entering the market and attract sophisticated manufacturers from other industries to the cannabis fray. A great example of this is Vertosa’s Canadian manufacturing partner, Taima Extracts. It was apparent from their initial meetings that the compa-

nies share similar ideologies, focusing specifically on quality and consistency. The ownership team at Taima brings a 40-year legacy in food manufacturing to the cannabis industry, highlighted by CEO Phil Carnovale’s experience revolutionizing the egg industry as he oversaw the cracking, packaging, distributing and wholesaling of 10 million eggs per week for major grocers and restaurants throughout Canada. While someone like Phil might shy away from operating in the California market due to unresolved regulations and federal risk, the Canadian market has offered an opportunity for him and his team to bring his previous business operational excellence to the cannabis industry with few legal or reputational concerns. Lastly, Canada excels in scaled manufacturing facilities. As Vertosa infuses a wide array of

“Operators are focusing on the inclusion of targeted minor cannabinoids, fullspectrum strain profiles and unique flavour and functional ingredient combinations. Canadian brands and manufacturers can certainly look to these evolutions in California to guide them in decisionmaking in the Canadian market.”

products, we’ve prided ourselves on pushing beverage infusion technology to a new level. But we also understand the downstream costs and requirements of installing, warehousing, distributing and even retailing beverages and other infused products are a massive undertaking for any brand to do alone. The only long-term path forward for a scalable ingestible industry is for brands to be able to rely on co-manufacturing as they would in development of any other manufactured, ready-to-consume food or beverage product. The large amount of licensed real estate, multi-million dollar canning lines, and staffing requirements have all caused a significant bottleneck in California to date. On the flip side, access to banking, participation of sophisticated operators and clear regulations have supported the rise of over half a dozen dedicated beverage co-manufacturers in Canada, contributing to the ease of entry for brands and products into the rapidly growing ingestibles category. While both of these markets continue to mature on the parallel paths, there remains a unique opportunity for operators to cross-pollinate the California and Canadian cannabis markets, bringing across the best aspects of each market to the other side. While many forward-thinking, innovative operators in California can look to Canadian manufacturers for operational excellence, those same scaled operators in Canada can look to California operators for exciting product trends for leveraging in the increasingly competitive product landscape. A NORTH AMERICAN CANNABIS POWERHOUSE...WITHOUT THE US? How Mexico’s Fight for Cannabis Legalization Could Be A Good Opportunity for Canada

A

By Jillian Reddish

s global markets in cannabis expand, there is a question as to whether North America can retain its leadership position in the space. While the U.S. has continued to lag in its ability to further federalized legalization policies, Mexico, globally recognized as an agricultural powerhouse, seems primed to aid Canada in firmly establishing the continent’s dominance. This is likely to help strengthen long-term relationships with lucrative markets in Europe and emerging markets throughout Latin America. How did we get here? Back in 2015, the Mexican Supreme Court of Justice ruled that prohibiting people from using cannabis for personal use was unconstitutional, the first in a chain of four resolutions issued by the Court leading to binding case law. One effect of these legal shifts was the legislature setting up regulations for medical marijuana usage that went into effect in 2017. Then in 2018, the Supreme Court ruled that total prohibition of cannabis for personal recreational use was unconstitutional and ordered the Legislature to take action within a fixed timeline. That timeline has since moved several times with numerous extensions. It appears however, the courts have run out of patience and have hopefully made the necessary push the legislative branch needs to take the final steps in establishing its legal framework. Despite promising progress throughout the winter of 2020-21, the bill stalled at the end of April 2021 and time ran out, prompting the Supreme Court to declare an Action of Unconstitutionality. Luis Armendariz of CAAM Legal says, “the main effect of the [action] is to eliminate the absolute prohibition of the consumption of cannabis for adult use” – so having or using cannabis is no longer illegal but a permit must be obtained (Armendariz notes that permits for the use, cultivation, transportation or other related activities “shall not be denied without any justified cause”). In essence, there is still no regulated framework for the legal commerce of non-medicinal cannabis but the court itself has forced the legislative hand. Since the ruling, there is now significant pressure on Mexico’s Congress and Executive Branch to create and pass the long-awaited comprehensive regulations needed for efficient, protected trade. The risk of strengthening the illicit market gets higher each day as the legal gray area drags out, and with Mexico’s historical struggles with governmental corruption and cartels, entrepreneurs may be understandably hesitant. Meanwhile Mexico’s medicinal cannabis industry continues to develop, which will significantly aid

14

the adult-use market in ramping up quickly once the stalemate breaks. These movements are ensuring that the Mexican legislative branch is not alone in feeling the pressure to update regulations. The U.S. is now in the uncomfortable position in which both neighbours to the north and south are effectively legal markets in a world in which even the United Nations recently rescheduled marijuana. The vote by the Commission for Narcotic Drugs, which is based in Vienna, includes 53 nations and was based on several recommendations of the World Health Organization. The adjustment focused specifically on removal from Schedule IV of the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs where it was placed next to enormously addictive opioids like heroin. When Mexico fully legalizes, it will become the largest country in the world with a federal program thanks to its population of almost 130 million. In contrast, Canada, which was widely hailed for being the first G8 country to federally legalize cannabis, has a population of less than 40 million. While Canada hasn’t quite stepped into the role of global dominator that the media spin portrayed back in 2018, the nation has successfully spurred global investment and expansion of international markets. Canada’s federal cannabis market continues to experience downward price pressure, over-regulation of marketing, and overly exuberant spending in international expansion based on an overestimated rate of anticipated consumer growth. Many Canadian companies chose to invest heavily in Colombia in 2018 and 2019. That capital flow has largely stalled as of mid-2021. A number of multinationals were forced to scale back, and domestic investment has yet to pick back up to the same levels that were seen prior to the global virus crisis of 2020. Based on past trends, it seems likely that Canadian multinational companies will come courting in Mexico to complement new sources out of Mexico itself and Europe. All of them are seeking low-cost supply and looking to extend well-established trade patterns for cannabis over the mid- to long-term. There’s a window for Canadian multinationals who understand the EU-GMP standards, and are already partnered with South America and LATAM to establish or strengthen their grip on a relatively early entrance to Europe -- well ahead of any US companies still stymied by the confusing lack of federal legalization and general lack of understanding about international standardizations. If the US fails to act, global markets will see a North American cannabis trade powerhouse without the biggest trading partner in that hemisphere.

Consider that: »» Canada’s experience with indoor cultivation is likely better aligned with EU GMP standards than Mexico, but Mexico’s experience with agriculture could help it quickly ramp up new EU GMP-quality facilities, especially if done in collaboration with international partners. »» Mexico is naturally well-connected to LATAM, and a critical part of the economic triangle of Mexico, Colombia and Brazil. For cannabis in particular, the competitive advantage of these countries rests on their long history of agricultural experience, beneficial climate and established trade routes. »» North American businesses that already have well-established cultivation facilities in Latin America (like many Canadians do) will get to market faster in Mexico. As with any emerging and developing market, there is always risk, including a general lack of knowledge about the potential of the cannabis plant itself. Nathan Mison, founding partner and CEO of Diplomat Consulting in Canada, notes, “When Canada legalized cannabis three years ago, what it failed to do is support and steward the growth of the industry - from the agricultural innovation to the retail angle, to the advocates and activists, the cannabis sector feels under supported. As Mexico enters the world of cannabis legalization, I hope that policymakers can really focus on the economics of legalization and treat it like an economic sector to create jobs all along the value chain.” Mexico’s biggest stumbling block has always been large-scale corruption. That impact could heavily dampen foreign investment and hamper a company’s ability to build businesses in a legal and predictable way. That being said, with strong local partners and input from knowledgeable, collaborative consultants or service providers, successful navigation is likely possible and provides enormous opportunity for early entrants. This economic case study is a rare -- if never-before-seen -- example of a trade scenario in which the potential power vacuum created by the U.S.’s absence leaves room for well-placed Canada and Mexico to duke it out or collaborate for the biggest piece of the pie in the lucrative though heavily regulated markets of Europe and LATAM. 2020 WAS A BANNER YEAR FOR THE CANNABIS VAPE INDUSTRY By Dave Kaplan, Greentank Technologies

I

n June, we examined why market share metrics determined by total sales are often misleading, however using total units sold to determine market shares tells a much more accurate story—one that speaks to the actual item quantities moving through a given market at a given time. This metric gives us a better gauge on a product category’s growth and maturity, independent of other factors. We also pointed out that the market share decline of vape as a category in the US wasn’t nearly as extreme as it appeared to be on the surface, and that vape market shares actually rose in certain major US markets last year. The truth is that the cannabis vape industry is indeed thriving and developing at a very steady and healthy rate. Let’s take a closer look at the factors contributing to the sector’s impressive growth using comprehensive, real-time cannabis vape sales data. Cannabis Vape Sales Keep Climbing Despite a slight downtick in overall market share, 2020 was the cannabis vape industry’s best sales year on record. A banner year to be sure! Cannabis vape sales surged by 29.5% in California last year, despite the COVID-19 pandemic, breaking the $1 billion mark for the first time in the sunshine state. Oregon’s cannabis vape sales rose 14.8% in 2020, improving from $137.6M to $158.0M overall. Colorado and Washington also experienced double-digit cannabis vape sale percentage increases, with climbs of 11.0% and 10.5%, respectively, from their 2019 totals. In fact, of the five states Greentank diligently tracks, only Nevada experienced a drop in sales last year. That’s totally understandable given the sharp decline in tourism the state experienced due to COVID-19 and how heavily Nevada’s cannabis market depends on tourism for revenue. Fortunately, vape sales have rebounded in Nevada in a big way in 2021, with its Q1 vape sales outperforming that of 2020’s first quarter by more than 15%. landscape in 2020, and one of them essentially transformed into a cannabis vape powerhouse overnight. Illinois was projected to generate substantial revenue as a legal cannabis epicenter in the Midwest, but no one expected it to surpass Colorado as the second-biggest cannabis vape market in the world in just 10 months! Illinois sold more than $300M in cannabis vape products in its first year, accounting for roughly 30% of all cannabis products sold—the highest of any rec-legal market in North America. Even more promising is the state seems to only be getting started, with 2021 cannabis sales expected to shatter the $1.03B mark reached last year. Michigan also debuted its cannabis market in 2020 and even though vape products there got off to a relatively slow start over the first half of the year, they gained considerable steam in the second half. The result was $198.6M in can-

More States Coming Online in 2021 and Beyond Over the course of 2020, Illinois and Michigan combined pumped nearly half a billion dollars of new revenue into the cannabis vape sector. Canada also debuted its cannabis vape market in 2020 with an estimated $375Min sales. Thanks to these additional revenue streams, the North American recreational cannabis vape market vaulted over the $2 billion annual mark for the first time. Needless to say, over $800M in new revenue for a single year is an outlier; markets as substantial as Canada and Illinois don’t come online every year. But new markets will continue to steadily emerge as legalization sweeps across North America, and each will infuse more capital into the cannabis vape sector in the process. Recreational cannabis sales are already underway and booming in Arizona, months earlier than expected. Experts predict that sales there are likely to surpass $1 billion by year two. That’s an additional $150-$200M in annual cannabis vape revenue when factoring in the category’s average market share in the US. Virginia recently announced it aims to launch its recreational cannabis market by July 1. Montana could open as soon as this fall, and New Jersey and New York are both on pace to launch their markets next year. Also, don’t sleep on Mexico, currently on the cusp of federal legalization and situated to instantly become the world’s largest rec-legal cannabis market when legislation ultimately passes. Experts will surely debate which markets are most likely to emerge over the next decade, and in which order. But the main takeaway here is that the cannabis vape industry is well positioned to maintain its current rate of growth going forward. PACKAGING & LABELLING

White Labelling: A New Landscape By Rachel Neves

T

he launch of Cannabis 2.0 products in October 2019 caused a significant disruption in Canada’s legal recreational cannabis market. Consumers were suddenly given access to a breadth of new product categories, such as vapes, edibles and topicals, and as consumer preferences became increasingly discerning, so too did the importance of product differentiation. For many Licensed Producers (LPs) and brands, entering this emerging market with the right products at the right time has presented a variety of challenges, including licensing requirements, access to capital, facility infrastructure and product development expertise. Cue the rise of white labelling. What is White Labelling and Why Is It Becoming So Popular? The term white labelling is used to describe when a company manufactures a product, and then that product is sold and marketed under a different brand name. White labellers can partner with multiple brands to create a variety of products while retaining their anonymity as the producer. Product marketing and promotion for each of the products developed by the white labellers will be the responsibility of the brands. White labelling offers brands who are looking to expand their product offerings the opportunity to innovate without the risk of large operational or financial setbacks. It can also act as a safety net to meet increasing consumer demand if an LP has run out of internal production capacity. An additional benefit is that it often provides brands with access to product development and formulation expertise that might otherwise be a challenge to obtain. Choosing the Right Partner Choosing the right partner is critical to the success of a brand’s white labelling program. Working with a white labeller that you can trust can determine the overall quality of the final product, and even the success or failure of a product in the market. Many LPs and brands are finding success partnering with white labellers that possess

18 18

the ability to develop diversified products, with consistent volumes and stringent quality assurance measures. As the market continues to become increasingly saturated, the right partner will offer a range of customizations, based on a data-driven understanding of market needs. They will also have an in-depth, working understanding of the complex wholesale distribution network across the country. The process for launching a new product into retail isn’t a simple one, and it can vary dramatically from province to province. There are various factors that need to be accounted for at every level, from Health Canada submissions, to excise taxes and retail pricing, and even maintaining crucial relationships with provincial buyers. Quality of Inputs We’re now seeing white labellers, including Motif Labs, sourcing cannabis directly from Canadian growers, and processing cannabis into a variety of unique extracts. Sourcing premium biomass from experienced cultivators is incredibly important when it comes to white labelling. The cultivation practices and qualities of the cannabis biomass, such as total cannabinoid content, terpene profile and moisture content, will affect the extraction process dramatically. The higher the quality of the input material, the more efficient the extraction process will be. Furthermore, the benefits of these improved process efficiencies can be passed along to clients in various ways, such as cost reductions or improved production times. Another consideration when selecting a white labelling partner for Cannabis 2.0 products is the quality of their cannabis extracts, such as distillate, winterized oil and crude oil. Perhaps one of the most important qualities of a cannabis extract is its purity, or potency. Some processors now have the capability to produce distillate with over 95% cannabinoid purity, so it’s important for brands to do their research to find the right partner for their specific needs. As the number of cannabis products on the market continues to rise, and consumer tastes become increasingly discerning, finding new ways to differentiate your products through their

flavour profiles can be the difference between the success and failure of your brand’s product. Terpene profiles that have been sourced directly from cannabis offer a great alternative to some of the underwhelming flavour profiles common to many Cannabis 2.0 products. Some white labellers are even now offering solventless cannabis terpene extraction technology. The Risk of Vertical Integration In an industry that’s still finding its footing, the benefit of vertical integration is the complete control, convenience, and production oversight that it offers LPs. However, as we’ve seen in the Canadian market, many vertically integrated companies have not been able to adequately meet the needs of our country’s fast-growing industry. LPs have tried to excel in multiple areas of cannabis production but have spread themselves too thin, and the consequences have been significant. There are many moving parts within cannabis production, and coordinating all of these activities is no simple feat. A lag in one area of production could be the reason that a production deadline is missed. A lack of resources and, therefore, attention at each stage of production also has serious implications for the end product. This might mean a compromised, lower-quality product that fails to meet Health Canada guidelines, and a less diverse product range that doesn’t satisfy consumers’ evolving demands. As the cannabis industry in Canada continues to grow and expand into new product categories, the shift to white labelling from the early vertical integration model is on the rise. White labelling has proven to be a valuable alternative, allowing companies to focus their attention on developing brand loyalty through product innovation, without the operational burden. With an increasing number of barriers for LPs and brands looking to introduce new product offerings, white labelling has cemented itself as a solution to quickly innovate and meet consumer demand. Five Ways to Make Cannabis Labelling Less Manual When Faced with Labour Shortages By Jenna Wagner

L

abour shortages have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 global pandemic, making it even more difficult for employers to fill open positions. At the same time, the cannabis industry is booming and consumers are expecting quality products, quickly. As a result of these tensions, companies are forced to refocus and maximize their resources in the most critical areas of their business. Today, we will focus on one of the most critical aspects of any business – the barcode label. For companies facing labour shortages and looking for more efficiencies, here are five ways to make cannabis labelling less manual so staff can focus on other value-added activities. 1. Design Labels Using Wizards or Label Samples When you need to design new labels or generate new barcodes, use helpful built-in wizards to make the process quicker and easier. Built-in wizards walk you through each step of adding text, barcodes or images, helping you to get it right the first time. Often your barcode label design software will also have pre-made label samples or templates to help you get started quickly. Cannabis Label Sample Packs can help provide quick access to required elements on cannabis labels, saving your staff time in having to build from scratch. 2. Connect Your Database to Your Label Template Once you’ve created your label, you must create a way to get the proper data onto it. The most basic (and common) method of data input is a ‘When Printed’ field, which is simply a form that is presented at print time. The print user keys in the correct data and prints the label. Unfortunately, relying on ‘When Printed’ fields burdens your print users with extra work and leaves your labels vulnerable to manual errors. Extra work is precisely what you want to avoid when you’re understaffed. Instead, connect your label template to your business database. Whether your database is a spreadsheet, Metrc, BioTrack, Leaf Data Systems or it’s part of your Cannabis Resource

Planning (CRP) business system, your labelling software can create a connection to that database. Creating a database connection is easy, and often there’s a wizard for it. Simply select your database, select your table and choose the fields you want to use on your label. Then, click and drag those fields onto the label as text, barcodes or images. You can then toggle through the records and watch the data change. With database connections, your user can simply select the relevant database record at print time. This saves time for your print user, allowing them to get back to other value-added work. Even better, it reduces the risk for labelling errors that can cause expensive delays or rejected shipments. 3. Create a Custom Label Print Form When manual data entry at print time is truly unavoidable, you can leverage custom label print forms to make data entry easy and accurate. Custom label print forms offer a wide variety of field options: text, incrementing numbers, sliders, date pickers and more. You can also place data validation on the field, such as forcing a phone number to be in a specific format or only allowing a maximum of 10 characters. Customized label print forms turn manual data entry from a difficult, time-consuming task to a quick and low-effort way to get accurate print-time data onto your label. 4. Automatically Gather Data from a Scale or Scanner If your cannabis labels need to contain print-time data such as a weight or value scanned from a barcode, built-in advanced features can help your print users gather that data automatically. This advanced feature, PortWatch, listens to a port for communication from a connected device, such as a scale, scanner, keyboard or PLC (Programmable Logic Controller). When data is received, PortWatch automatically prints the label with the correct data. As soon as one label is printed, PortWatch goes back to listening for the next value. In most cases, your users don’t even have to click the Print button. Automating data entry eliminates the need for print time users to manually key in data, saving time and reducing the risk for mistakes. 5. Automate Printing out of your Business System So far, these tips to make cannabis labelling less manual have reduced the number of manual touch-

points for your employees. But what if you could completely eliminate manual touchpoints from your label printing process? Often, all the data needed for your labels exist within your business system. Leverage a label print automation solution to monitor the business system for a printing trigger. Here are some examples of common printing triggers: »» »» »»

Releasing a work order Receiving a new sales order Clicking “print” in your business system

Any of these actions can generate a flat text file or a new/updated database record behind the scenes and can trigger a label print job based on the database record. When you integrate your business system into your label printing process, you can fully eliminate manual touchpoints for your workers. This allows staff to focus fully on tasks necessary for your operations, other than label printing. Don’t Call It A Comeback For decades the tumbler trimmer has widely been regarded as the standard in automated trimming. Now, one of the main pioneers of this technology, CenturionPro, is poised to regain its top position in the trimming category this year. Their rallying cry of witness the rise, represents an acronym that describes their machines – Reliable, Industrial, Simple and Efficient. Operating out of their new expanded facility, they have ramped up their product offering four-fold and are setting themselves up to corner and dominate certain segments of trimming. With 2021 being a breakout year for CenturionPro, this article provides a breakdown of everything going on at CenturionPro.

Rail Systems, Speed Control and Converyors To enhance the already industry leading performance of their hybrid wet & dry trimmers, CenturionPro has developed rail systems, speed control and conveyors. With the addition of these innovations to the CenturionPro line-up, growers can now enhance the performance, consistency, and versatility of their trimming systems. Strain versatility is vital to a successful harvesting process and Speed Control empowers growers to better trim a wider variety of strains, regardless of flower size, shape, or density. Increase velocity for a higher feed rate with wet or heavy resin coated flower or slow it down to be extra gentle on delicate dried flower. Speed Control will come standard on the new CenturionPro Dry Batch Trimmers with the exception of the DBT Model 1, which is designed to be a cost-effective solution for home growers. Additionally, Variable Speed Control will now be available as an upgrade option on all CenturionPro hybrid wet & dry trimmers.

Rail Systems enable growers to connect CenturionPro trimmers end-to-end, for a souped-up cannabis and hemp harvesting solution. Connecting machines delivers exponentially greater power and precision, with growers empowered to better match throughput to grow size and increase capacity as they expand. With the continued trend towards larger harvests, CenturionPro is allowing customers to expand without having to replace existing machines. Additionally, customers will now have the option to purchase single, double, or triple machine hybrid wet & dry trimming systems. Enhance your elite harvesting solution with both infeed and quality control (outfeed) conveyors. Infeed conveyors ensure steady product delivery, for consistent movement through the system resulting in consistently superior results. Quality control conveyors afford growers greater opportunity to inspect results, to ensure every single flower, regardless of shape, size or density, is trimmed perfectly.

Fall 2021, will see a new machine added to their line of industrial scale trimming solutions. The XL 5.0 SS is set to debut in September and is sure to impress with the same industry compliant features as the SS Trimmers and some additional enhancements you will have to see to believe.

A Bucket for Every Size Harvest A core value at CenturionPro is to enhance their product offering to provide a solution for every size of harvest. In 2021, CenturionPro has added 3 new bucker models to their already expansive line of destemming solutions. Late in the Spring, we saw the introduction of the Mini Buckers. Inspired by the best selling GC1 and HP1 Bucking Machines, the GCM and HPM benefait from the same brand-name parts and exceptional construction as the highly sought-after de-stemmers, but scaled down for enhanced portability and affordability.

Also, new this year, is the TableTop Bucker, which falls under the HP line of CenturionPro bucking solutions. Designed with portability in mind, this machine weighs in at under 50 lbs and features sturdy stainless-steel carrying handles, so it is easy to move around. The industry’s first elite de-stemming solution designed specifically for home-growers, the HPTT pairs beautifully with any home-grower trimming system such as the CenturionPro TableTop or Twister T6.

RETAILER PROFILE

Canvas Cannabis: A Cut Above the Rest BY DAVID HALPERT

In this our September issue Retailer Profile, we speak with Helene Vassos, owner and founder of CANVAS Cannabis, with retail locations in the Danforth, Mount Dennis, Liberty Village and Harbord Village areas of Toronto. After a rewarding 30-year career in the non-profit healthcare sector, Vassos is on a mission to help shape Ontario’s corporate-dominated cannabis industry as the first independent retail cannabis store with a solo female owner. What inspired you to enter this industry? I was considering retirement when the idea to enter the lottery for an opportunity to open a retail cannabis store sprouted. I had gone into cannabis stores in the past and felt that they weren’t very warm or inviting. As a woman I felt I could capture a casual elegance in a very zen retail space that other stores were lacking. So when the opportunity to enter the lottery opened up, I realized I couldn’t pass up the chance. There was this amazing new industry unfolding in front of me and I very much wanted to be part of it. I decided that this was a chance for me to help lead the way as both a woman and a business owner. Can you speak to your experience prior to entering the cannabis industry? Upon graduating from the University of Toronto in 1985, I began my career in the not-for-profit sector holding positions including as National Director of Programs and Services, Director of Development, Chief Operating Officer, Executive Director and CEO with organizations such as the Lung Association, Children’s Aid Society, ALS Canada and Prostate Cancer Canada I retired from the sector in 2015 and have since dedicated my time to my family and caring for my aging parents, volunteering with local

community organizations and causes, travelling somewhere distant and warm and investing in real estate. Tell me about the company culture, what it is like to work with your team and the kind of team you have corralled? We cater to a varied clientele with wide-ranging life experiences and perspectives, so it was always important for us that the demographics of our team follow suit. As it stands, there are approximately 36 employees positioned across our four CANVAS locations, varying in age from their early 20s to their late 50s. Truth be told, it still amazes me just how quickly we shifted from a company to a family. In some cases, I mean that literally. We have staff members who are siblings and some who are cousins. There are staff members who are long-time friends and others who went to high school with my sons. On any given day, you might come across my husband in the front of the store, chatting with our neighbours. We don’t exaggerate when we say that we’re a family business. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. In a lot of ways, this has allowed me to take on the role of a mentor, which is something that I relish. I’m a mother of two, so it’s very important to me that we take care of our young employees and create an environment where they feel their voice matters. So often, young em-

ployees go unheard or underappreciated. But the truth of the matter is that this industry is being built up for them. The cannabis retail market is still in its infancy. One day, it will be inherited by my young employees so it’s important to me that I give them the tools they need in order to be industry leaders. And I can’t wait to watch them grow with it. What’s it like being the first female independent owner in an industry dominated by large corporations? I feel privileged to help lead the way in this ever-evolving industry, as both a woman and as a small-business owner. Like in all industries, women certainly bring a different kind of perspective or creativity into their work and I would like to think that this has been reflected in the look and feel of our store. But really, I think it’s the perspective that I offer as a small business owner that’s most important to the success of Canvas. There is a prevailing concern in the industry that cannabis store ownership in Ontario is being overtaken by a few big corporate players whose focus is on the bottom line. I am not part of a big business conglomerate where decisions are made by people who sit behind their desk. At Canvas, I have my boots on the ground and the decisions are made by me at the store level. I don’t have to go to a board of directors to get approval before I make a decision and this allows me to bring fresh ideas and a new image to the retail cannabis world that is grounded in a spirit of inclusivity and collaboration. You realize quickly that the only

bottom line that matters at all is the responsibility you owe to your staff and your customers and your neighbours. Why did you choose the Danforth area for your first store? I grew up in the Danforth area, so I have a deep connection to the neighbourhood. Because of that, I took great care and attention to build a store that fits with the existing culture. Respecting each community we represent is very important to our vision and our philosophy. Danforth is a cozy urban neighbourhood shop

that is calm, sophisticated, and relatable. In a lot of ways, the store is a love letter to the neighbourhood that I called home for decades. And our other locations in Liberty Village and Harbord Village are cut from the same cloth. The Mount Dennis location for example has been built in the center of a beautiful, bourgeoning neighbourhood with a growing community and a strong cultural heritage. It’s a community that we’re proud to have planted our roots in. How would you define success, in terms of what you are doing with your stores? A question that we ask ourselves very often in this burgeoning industry. The cannabis retail market is ever changing and growing, so our definition of what “success” means is always shifting with it. For me, success will have meant that we are fully embraced by our neighbours as members of these communities, that we have been able to live up to our mandate of providing unparalleled customer care and service, high-quality cannabis products at an affordable price, and that we have done what we can in order to help pave the way for the continued growth of Canada’s legal cannabis industry. I think that the corporate ethos we’re creating at CANVAS is something special, and I hope we get the chance to share our vision with as many people as we can. Provincial Updates/

Ontario

In late June, the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) published A Year in Review (April 1, 2020 – March 31, 2021) as a resource for the entire legal cannabis industry in Ontario. As a result of continued growth in retail store openings, Ontario’s legal share of the recreational market nearly doubled from 20% during the 2019 – 2020 fiscal year to 37.6% in this past fiscal year. This last quarter, Ontario’s legal share of the recreational market increased by 1% point compared with Q3, reaching 44%. Total sales were $840,100,000 (Retail Stores - $707,600,000, OCS.ca $132,400,000). 59% of sales represents dried flower, 16% - vapes, 12% pre-rolls, 4% edibles, 4% oils, 2% beverages. More detailed information can be found at OSC.ca.

Manitoba

In mid-July, Manitoba Justice advised the attorney general has brought a lawsuit seeking an interim and permanent injunction against Indigenous Bloom Long Plain GP Ltd. and its owners, Long Plain First Nation, and Indigenous Bloom CGT Corp., to stop the unlicensed sale of unregulated cannabis products and apply one set of rules to everyone. The attorney general takes this step in the public interest, given his unique role and function. To protect public health and safety, to protect the integrity of the established legal framework for cannabis sales in Manitoba. Statistics Canada’s latest sales data shows that legal sales of cannabis in Manitoba reached $11.9 million in April, up 3% from March. Manitoba posted substantial sales increases, with Manitoba’s online and in-store marijuana sales rising to $11.5 million, a 2.7% increase from a month earlier.

Alberta

Statistics Canada’s latest sales data shows that Alberta sales flatlined at a west-leading $58 million in cannabis sales, unchanged from March, Statistics Canada reports. Subsequent to the quarter end, closed the acquisition of Inner Spirit Holdings Ltd. and its Spiritleaf retail cannabis store network, establishing Sundial as one of Canada’s largest vertically integrated cannabis companies, whereby Sundial has acquired all of the issued and outstanding common shares of Inner Spirit Holdings Ltd. for consideration per Inner Spirit Share consisting of (i) $0.30 in cash and (ii) 0.0835 of a common share of Sundial.

Quebec

In fiscal 2020-2021, the SQDC’s overall sales totalled $537.2 million or 91,529 kg of cannabis, compared with $311.6 million or 46,863 kg in the preceding fiscal year. Store network sales rose to $486.7 million or 82,873 kg of cannabis, while the SQDC’s transactional website generated sales of $50.5 million or 8,692 kg of cannabis. By the end of its 2020-2021 fiscal year, the Société québécoise du cannabis (SQDC) had not only converted nearly 53% of the illegal cannabis market but done so only two and a half years after opening for business, beating the target set in its Strategic Plan 2020-2023. The company is thus fulfilling its mission of drawing users away from the underground cannabis market. The 53% figure is based on the annual demand for cannabis in Quebec, recently estimated at 173 metric tons by the Quebec Finance Department.

Saskatchewan

High Tide Inc. announced it has recently completed the acquisition of cannabis firm 102105699 Saskatchewan Ltd. The transaction is reported to be for consideration of $2.7 million, a slight dip from its previously announced $2.9 million deal. Statistics Canada’s latest sales data shows that legal sales of cannabis in Saskatchewan reached $13.4 million in April, up 5.4% from March and the second-highest month-over-month sales increase among western provinces.

British Columbia

New rules in British Columbia now allow privately owned cannabis retailers to offer home delivery as of mid-July. Industry sources say the move could help level the playing field between legal retailers and B.C.’s entrenched illicit market, which previously enjoyed limited competition for home delivery. Previously, only the government-run BC Cannabis Stores was allowed to offer home delivery. Statistics Canada’s latest sales data shows that national marijuana product sales hit British Columbia led all western provinces with a 13% increase, month over month, to $47 million in April.

Prince Edward Island

A P.E.I. group has an agreement in place to purchase Charlottetown cannabis producers Canada’s Island Garden and FIGR East. In late June, the court approved the sale purchase agreement between the FIGR Group and Smith (and the P.E.I. group of local investors) to acquire the FIGR brand, Canada’s Island Garden Inc. and FIGR East. FIGR Norfolk in Ontario, is being acquired in a separate purchase agreement by another company and will not retain the FIGR name.

Nova Scotia

The NSLC released its year-end financial results (April 1, 2020 – March 31, 2021), reporting a 11.0% increase in earnings for a total of $274.5 million. Total sales for the year were $793.1 million with cannabis sales of $86.0 million, an increase of 21.1%. Retail customer transactions for cannabis were down 3.1% and the average dollar value of each transaction grew by 25.0% to $43.41 as customers purchased more larger package sizes that carry a lower price per gram.

For the month of April Statistics Canada did not provide sales data for the smallest provincial market, Prince Edward Island.

Newfoundland & Labrador

In late July, Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Corporation (NLC) released the names and locations of qualified applicants from the recent Licensed Cannabis Retailer (LCR) Request for Proposals (RFP). They are as follows: R&R Distributors Ltd., Atlantic Cultivation, CEPG Consulting, Atlantic Cultivation and Oceanic Releaf. Statistics Canada’s latest sales data shows that legal sales of cannabis in Saskatchewan reached $4.7 million in April, up 3% from March.

New Brunswick

Cannabis NB is launching its first ever “Cannabis NB Cup” competition. This unique competition will pit premium dry flower products from eight Atlantic Canadian licensed producers against each other – with the winners decided by 600 judges. The judging will be done online via a detailed survey and participants will have the opportunity to score the products amongst five award categories: Best in Grow, Runner-up, Honourable Mention, Best Looking, and Best Experience. Entrants in the competition were carefully selected and had to meet specific THC and terpene requirements in order to be included. Statistics Canada’s latest sales data shows that legal sales of cannabis in New Brunswick reached $4.6 million in April, down 1.8% from March.

Yukon / Northwest Territories / Nunavut Statistics Canada’s latest sales data shows that Northwest Territories sales remained steady at $623,000 in cannabis sales, unchanged from March, Statistics Canada reports. Statistics Canada did not provide sales data for the territories of Yukon and Nunavut.
