ANME (or Adult Novelty Manufacturers Expo) was a great event to be thrown headfirst into the world of pleasure products and adult novelties. Held in Burbank California at the Burbank Marriott Hotel in sunny Los Angeles and the first big show of the year (this one was held on January 8th), proved to be an exceptional venue for someone just starting out in this space. It was a great in-person event after having spent literally months sending emails, having phone meetings or, at best, Zoom calls across countries. Further to that it gave me a chance to personally meet a lot of prospects, advertisers, writers and companies I’ve been conversing with over the last year or so. It’s one thing to see a list of companies on a spreadsheet or the vast number of products on a brand’s website, it’s another thing to see absolute sprawling booths of fantastic products with buyers eager to see what’s new for their stores’ inventory.

One aspect of this industry that’s suprised me is the sheer amount of innovation taking place, from technological advancements like virtual reality and remote-controlled apps, to the rise of discrete toys, to the de-stigmitization of fetish toys and assortments available, not already taking into account the sheer number of designs and functionality of vibrators and dildos, among other devices. While sex toys represent the largest number of SKUs when it comes to product type as a whole (compared with other product categories like lubes, lingerie, fetish, etc.), this issue is dedicated to looking at the issues and challenges facing toys in particular and how those issues affect everything in the sales process from marketing to customer relations.

To that end, we have articles dedicated to accessible brands in a shaky economy; the role that desensitization plays for retailers and customers alike; a look at pleasure products past, present and future as well as exploring various popular fetishes and the role adult pleasure products play in them. There’s also a recap of the ANME show itself that took place in early January.

If the impressive showing of ANME was any indication of what we can expect the first quarter of 2024, no doubt this year will be just as fruitful.

FSC Announces Formation of the Sexual Wellness Professional Alliance

Burbank, CA – The Free Speech Coalition (FSC) has teamed with a group of sexual wellness professionals to form the industry’s first formal trade organization, the Sexual Wellness Professionals Alliance (SWPA). Operating as division of the FSC, the SWPA will primarily focus on serving the complex needs of individuals within sexual wellness manufacturing, distribution, sales, and education. Membership signups will begin in January following the group’s kick off presentation at ANME in Burbank.

The SWPA’s formation has been developing over the last 18 months and builds upon significant past efforts by the FSC and other professionals to build this type of collective. Taking to heart all that was previously learned, the new group chose to focus on professional growth and industry suc-

cess. Led by a core team from the FSC, development meetings have included more than a dozen industry vets representing every constituent sector from manufacturing to distribution. From there, committees for operations, membership, and marketing were formed. Finally, the group selected a three-person steering committee consisting of Scott Watkins of Doc Johnson, Alicia Sinclair of COTR, and Ken Herskovitz of Vibratex.

“This alliance is necessary for the growth of our industry and the individual professionals who make a difference for businesses and consumers”, says Scott Watkins. “We will work together to make this collective strong by providing the expertise of our board members, programs that assist with growth and continuous support from the industry in a whole. We look forward to having

everyone join us in January 2024.” The SWPA has established a four-part mission: create a unified voice for sexual wellness industry professionals; improve collaborative, professional communication; offer education, mentorship opportunities, and shared resources; and financially support the FSC’s legal advocacy on behalf of businesses.

Designing toys is an art. Many important aspects need to be evaluated at the drawing table: textures, curves, shapes, dimensions, vibrations, movements, thrusts, etc. Welcome to an exclusive behind-thescenes look at the intersection of sensuality and design. From concept to creation, we will explore the meticulous craftsmanship and thoughtful considerations that go into crafting these personal pleasure devices, a deep dive into the toy designing process behind the Shunga Intimate Massagers’ success.

THE IDEA

After more than 20 successful years of innovation in the intimate cosmetics field, Shunga president and co-founder Sylvain Seguin received a lot of demand for products to complement the company’s intense creams and gel range. Over the years, this idea gradually made its way into its business planning, but Shunga didn’t want to improvise as a manufacturer of sex toys without having first deepened its knowledge of the field. As a Canadian business that prides itself on the quality of its products, Seguin took the appropriate time to develop a range of intimate massagers that truly reflect the brand. Spoiler alert: it took more than five years to develop from start to finish.

THE RESEARCH

The first step was to ask women what they liked about the sex toys they used, but also what they disliked in a sex toy. As a result of this early market research, SHUNGA was surprised by the answers it received and by the complexity of their requests: ergonomics, size, length, vibrations, comfort, sensation, materials, and design just to name a few. tals of a couple in action was their first source of inspiration. To make a good design, Shunga had to see and understand the position of a penis in a vagina. It might seem obvious...but it’s quite the contrary!

The third step was to find an industrial designer capable of combining all the requests that it received from the women it interviewed, with the sophistication and elegance the SHUNGA brand is known for. “This step was terribly complicated. We started with Asian designers, but the quality of the designs really did not meet our expectations. We then hired Canadian designers. The quality was there but they couldn’t bring the designs I had in mind to life,” said Sylvain in discussing the development process. As a result, the final step was to let go of the designers and acquire 3D industrial design software, learn how to use it in a few weeks and make the designs themselves, a long, tedious road full of pitfalls in and of itself.

Three years of design, thousands of hours of work, hundreds of prototypes produced using

3D printers as well as a multitude of trial and error have given it the results you see today. Not to mention all the tests made by its open-minded “professional testers” who were willing to test each of the prototypes and give comments and necessary modifications to be made. The designs were redone hundreds of times over with some models having more than 400 iterations.

Sylvain was aiming for nothing less than perfection. All the little details have been thought out and redesigned to satisfy ergonomics, comfort, grip, textures, power, vibration modes, dimensions and clean design. When Shunga’s President got goosebumps finalizing a design, it was its signal that its mission was accomplished and that it could at last proudly affix the SHUNGA Erotic Art logo on this new range of massagers.

THE FINAL TOUCHES

The reputation of the SHUNGA cosmetic range is established worldwide thanks to the highest-quality products and ingredients. “For us, in order to put our SHUNGA logo on a range of intimate massagers, there was no compromise to be made on the quality of the components. We have therefore chosen the best electronic components, silicone, motors and batteries with the best lifespan, which we then tested and re-tested to ensure optimal quality,” said Sylvain in discussing the line’s success.

As SHUNGA intimate moments products are manufactured at its head office in Montreal, it is used to having full control over the quality of its products. It was therefore difficult for them to find a manufacturer that they could trust to reflect the quality associated with the SHUNGA brand. To do this, they traveled to Asia several times, visited dozens of manufacturers, but as SHUNGA’s quality standards were very high, none satisfied its needs. had almost lost hope, the company finally found the right partner who controls the production from A to Z as the company does at home. Still, this partnership was not without its challenges. The designs of its stimulators are very complex, and manufacturing proved to be a real headache at times. It had to be very creative and invent new ways of producing and assembling to achieve the desired results.

THE FINAL PRODUCT

June 2023: I’d just moved to a new country after university and I stumbled across an office job that would take a risk on hiring a fresh graduate from the UK with no experience in its industry… sex toys. Not only is this a job that’s borderline impossible to explain to my grandparents, but it’s also an area in which I had very little knowledge of, excluding all the jokes and google searches my friends and I would make in school. My managers took the time to teach me the ropes, but a lot of what they told me shocked me: internal and external toys? You can’t use a siliconebased lube with this toy, but this one is fine? What is ‘sounding’?

A lot of terms were thrown around that I had no idea about. My managers quickly discovered that maybe they’d become desensitized to this kind of thing. Discussing which kind of vibrator that you need was new and scary to me, but to them it was a regular topic over morning coffee. This is definitely something that can affect how stores interact with customers and thus also affect sales.

WHAT DOES DESENSITIZATION LOOK LIKE?

However, there’s a point to be made about how being too comfortable and overexposed to the industry can have its adverse effects. Sometimes you can forget that other people just aren’t used to talking about how good this glass butt plug feels when you angle it just right. In the wrong case, this can leave customers feeling overwhelmed and might even push them in the wrong direction.

WHAT EFFECT CAN THIS HAVE ON YOUR BUSINESS?

As a timid and prudish British person whose only real exposure to sex toys starts and ends with giggling at the word ‘dildo’, going into a store and seeing walls lined with 15inch silicone dongs can go from hilarious to intimidating real quick. To top that off you’ve got a sales assistant asking you intense, intimate questions right from the get-go: so, do you like vibes that hit your g-spot? How about clitoral stimulation? immediately that’s it. It’s too much. Sale is gone, and potentially this customer has been put off the thought of buying a toy from any business, let alone yours.

The first buy is so crucial for customers–how they’re treated in store can be the difference between falling in love with toys and wanting to experiment some more, or feeling stupid for even considering the idea in the first place. Of course, many industry professionals know this already; it’s common sense, right? All I’m saying is that it’s easy to forget that everyone starts somewhere, everyone starts as the newcomer, the newbie, the new kid on the block who knows absolutely nothing; that can be frightening for a lot of customers. Without that compassion and understanding, you can practically kiss any newcomers goodbye.

HOW CAN WE AVOID THIS?

Here might be the simplest yet hardest thing to balance. It’s beneficial to listen to not only new customers that you get in-store and online, but also onboarding opinions from newcomers . A fresh pair of eyes can really show you aspects of your business that you’ve become blind to. Seasoned professionals are the backbone of any company, but it’s so easy to become desensitized to issues that the industry faces. Newcomers mean new perspectives

and opinions and that can spark new ideas.

Education is clearly the way forward.

Teach newcomers how the industry works, and be open to questions and potential critiques. Newcomers to the industry are essential to see how new customers view your products and business as a whole – what do you think of this line of products? Is there anything that would suit your needs that we might not sell? You have a crucial ‘in’ here to see how potential consumers react to sex toys, why aren’t more companies taking advantage of this?

Also, we as an industry need to stress the importance of bringing new ideas to the table internally. Newcomers should also feel confident to voice their opinions and new ideas – if you feel that something could be changed or improved, say something! Your thoughts are just as valid as those

professionals who’ve been in the industry for decades. In order to be heard, you need to get involved.

Ultimately, there’s a lot to say about accommodating newcomers – whether they’re a new employee to the industry or a customer who’s new to buying toys. No one likes feeling intimidated when you’re new and don’t know anything – it’s important to educate and gently introduce them to this new world, instead of throwing them in the deep end and hoping they’ll float Taking the time to evaluate how you interact with newcomers to the industry can have a lasting impact on your sales and business as a whole: you might learn something new that you hadn’t considered before.
